RESPECT
ECE
During February at ECE we worked on the Child Protection Unit in the Second Step Program promoting self-care and safety. Regarding values, we made emphasis on the value of respect which we reinforced by teaching the importance of practicing it in our daily life. A GUIDE FOR PARENTS ON HOW TO PRACTICE THE VALUE OF RESPECT
Respect is one of the most important values that we must teach children; not only to respect adults and authority ďŹ gures, but also, other children and themselves. The basis of good coexistence lies in mutual respect and it is also the terrain where solid self-esteem ourishes. WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
How to teach children the value of respect? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Respect Workshop During January, we had the opportunity to with our Elementary students during their Second Step class. We taught a workshop of values, in which we talked about the value of respect. Respect is a value that manifests itself in the good treatment towards the different people with whom life is shared: parents, brothers, grandparents, uncels, cousins, teachers and classmates, who as people deserve to be treated with respectful words and attitudes. Ways in which the value of respect can manifest itself in everyday life: 1. Respect for people. 2. Respect for yourself . 3. Respect for the assets of others . 4. Respect for laws. How to be respectful: Treat others as you want to be treated. . Use kind words to express yourself. Listen to what others have to say. Act with respect towards people, do not make fun of them, or give them nicknames. Avoid disturbing others. Avoid making judgments about people knowing them. In class, after sharing with the students about Respect, we use “Austus the lion” who represents the value of respect in the school. The students, individually, colored it and wrote down “I promise to be respectful to…” and then share their new commitment with their classmates and teachers.

Celebrating Respect in Middle School! One of our community expectations is to be a respectful student. This encompasses: ★ Respecting others personal space and belongings. ★ Understanding that others may think and feel different than you. ★ Ask for help managing strong emotions. ★ Practice self-control ★ Listen ★ Acknowledge and greet people. This time we are celebrating our Middle School students that were awarded merits by their teachers during the month of January for representing and setting a good example for what it means to be respectful in our community.

THE POWER OF WORDS In High School, the value of Respect was addressed from a personal and intrinsic perspective, through an individual reflection on how the words we use to talk to ourselves is a way of showing self- respect. Although identifying our areas of weakness is normal and healthy, it’s important to try to improve and motivate ourselves. For example, thinking “I am so bad at drawing can be completed as “drawing has been difficult for me in the past, but I can improve”. During the SEL period, we guided the students into identifying five words to describe themselves, indicating if each one had a positive or negative connotation, and to support them while finding positive alternatives as necessary. ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION In the same way, looking for words or expressions with more positive connotations allows us to demonstrate respect to others. We have the right to express ourselves, but in order for our message to reach the other person in a more constructive way, we should take into consideration the factors for a communication to be assertive (to say what we want to say in an effective way): A. B. C.
Choosing the right moment to communicate. Maintaining an adequate tone of voice. Using “I statements”: “I think/ feel/ am” Example: Instead of saying “you always decide how you want to do the work when we have a group assignment” you can say “I feel frustrated when we have group assignments because I feel you don't take my opinion into consideration”.
