Vettore (array in Italian) is a chic modular lounge by Toan Nguyen for Studio TK that introduces resi elements into the office—particularly ideal for mixed-use spaces. “As the desire for flexibility increases with employees returning to the office, we wanted to introduce a collection that addresses that need while offering the comforting elements workers enjoy in their own home,” Studio TK president Charlie Bell says. The low-profile metal bases of the one- to four-seat benches (with and without backs and arms) are available in 16 powder-coats and with two configurable components: the upholstery and the integrated veneer- or laminate-topped corner, center, or end tables and tablets. space 1042

can’t quiet this buzz! As we head back to the office, the world moves from face shields to desk shields. BuzziShield Hook is one such option, in a jaunty geometric wedge shape measuring 59 or 71 inches high. The new BuzziSpace launch, with 2.8-inch-thick upholstered acoustic-foam body, offers a modicum of privacy and also supports noise reduction. welcome to neocon! We are thrilled to bring the commercial design industry back together, in-person, for the 52nd edition of NeoCon. Since 1969, the show has served as the commercial design industry’s leading platform and annual gathering place—and NeoCon 2021 will be a particularly important and productive event. This is an ideal moment to re-connect (directly) with each other, see and experience new products, discuss the power of design and the future of our shared spaces, and of course, celebrate. We thank our showrooms and exhibitors for their participation, our industry partners for their invaluable feedback and support, and Interior Design for publishing the Show Daily and the official NeoCon Show Directory, essential tools for navigating the show. We hope you have an inspirational, productive, and enjoyable experience at NeoCon 2021! See you next year: June 13-14, 2022. —The Mart

keynote presentations This year’s daily keynotes will be presented both on-site, to a limited audience (currently sold out, so hope you got tickets!), and online, livestreamed via NeoCon Hub (no registration required for show attendees). That’s great news, making it even easier for you to catch all three stellar, thoughtprovoking talks. Kicking things off on Monday is Studio Gang founding partner—and architectural trailblazer—Jeanne Gang, who will present “Furniture for the City: Recasting Urban Design through Micro-Activation.” Acknowledging how the pandemic has underscored the vital importance of urban public space for sustaining individual wellness, Gang will discuss how we can rethink design strategies to make cities more inclusive and equitable. Don’t miss Tuesday’s “The Medici Effect: Innovation at the Intersection,” by author, entrepreneur, and The Medici Group CEO Frans Johansson, who has advised executive leadership at Fortune 500 companies including Disney and Nike. He will demonstrate how diversity and inclusion are imperative to the success of organizations’ growth—and, indeed, the ultimate drivers of innovation. And capping off the keynote series is Jackie Koo, founding principal of KOO (and 2020’s Chicagoan of the Year in Architecture), who presents “Taming Push Me Pull You: KOO’s Integrated Architectural and Interior Design Practice,” during which she’ll discuss how the best spaces are created by those twin disciplines working in the same direction. IIDA AWARDS S H O W D A I LY 2 0 2 1

The diagnosis was clear: UVA Health’s emergency department was seeing 60,000 patients a year, a figure 50 percent higher than its intended capacity. Tasked with devising a solution was longtime collaborator Perkins&Will, and its 440,000-square-foot expansion— the largest in the modern history of the University of Virginia’s medical system and the winner of the IIDA competition’s healthcare category—would add 180 much-needed beds to the Charlottesville campus. Construction on the project, which was led by P&W principal and global design director Ralph Johnson, lasted six years. Included are 82 new emergency treatment rooms, 19 procedure rooms (including for radiology and operating), 33 pre- and post-op rooms, and a patient tower with 84 private, acuity-adaptable rooms. The structure’s aesthetic attributes are keenly attuned to the emotional well-being of patients and caregivers. Notably, an expansive south-facing facade draws daylight into patient rooms and frames sweeping Shenandoah Valley views. The color palette is similarly compassionate. Painted walls fill otherwise sterile surgical corridors with soothing earth tones, and a jumbo bench in a pediatric waiting area is a cheery yellow. Capping the building is a planted green roof incorporating a water-capture system that sends gray water to a chiller plant across the street. This last component makes the project essentially net-zero in water usage and a candidate for LEED Silver certification. Now that’s a clean bill of health.

The small municipality of Kirkkonummi, in southern Finland, can trace its history back millennia, from a medieval stone church to World War II–era bunkers. Next to that church, JKMM Architects revitalized a concrete library from the 1980s, the result not only the IIDA’s institutional category winner but also taking home the best of competition award. “Contemporary libraries are where people get together to share knowledge and experiences,” JKMM founding partner Teemu Kurkela says. “This is why Finns today refer to them as public living rooms.” JKMM more than doubled the square footage of the original library, making room for children’s, exhibition, and performance areas, plus a 2,150-square-foot café and reading lounge. Materials range from brass, stainless steel, and graphite to quartz and wood, and inspiration stems from such disparate entities as the Rotring 600 mechanical pencil, UFOs, and industrial cooling towers. Phat’s own existing Gang bench morphed into Everly, a bevel-legged tripod, while elliptical elements inform the base of Marlowe. On the court and off, Venus Williams is acing it. Her design firm, V Starr, launches its first-ever product collaboration: Muse, an upholstery line that celebrates the power of women. Rounds of drawings went back and forth between Williams and V Starr principal Sonya Haffey and Wolf-Gordon CCO Marybeth Shaw and senior textile designer Kathrin Hagge, culminating in the three uplifting patterns, which come in a range of colorways that cleverly incorporate various pronouns (think Alabasther). There’s Elena, a matelassé of dancing figures rendered in post-consumer polyester and nylon; Ora, a bleach-cleanable polyesternylon on which twisting, gradated helices vibrate with energy; and Frida, a poly-acrylic blend of twisted yarns that resembles kinetic brushstrokes on a chromatic ground. “I’m so proud of the patterns and colors,” Williams says. Contemporary Greek in stylish surrounds is the name of the game for this airy Logan Square taverna that offers indoor and outdoor dining plus takeout. Be transported to the Mediterranean—or more specifically, the southern Greek island of chef Doug Psaltis’s ancestors—via traditional fare lightened for a contemporary palette. Think spanakopita, octopus, lemony potatoes, prawn saganaki, hand-stretched wood-fired pita, and whole-grilled sea bass. 2542 N. Milwaukee Avenue; 773-365-1900.

Beatnik on the River [$] This waterfront bar a seven-minute walk from the Mart has laid-back appeal, with a name that calls to mind the carefree bohemian sixties. Its decor (with loads of outdoor space right on the river) and menu (the latter by Marcos Campos, also of Porto) are a blend of Mediterranean influences that stretch from North Africa to the Middle East, and the funky music program mashes up reggae, Afrobeat, and French pop. On weekends, brunch includes mimosa bottle service. 180 N. Upper Wacker Drive; 312-526-3345.

BLVD Steakhouse [$$$] Named after Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard, this steakhouse by executive chef Johnny Besch trades in classics such as lobster bisque, steak tartare, and seafood towers. Award-winning interiors by Studio K Creative blend Art Deco and Hollywood Regency styles, channeling the golden age of dining on the Strip, when you might have bumped into members of the Rat Pack. Try the Butcher’s Block, an array of prime cuts, or the caviar service for the ultimate indulgence. Reservations required. 817 W. Lake Street; 312-526-3116.

Diver at the Park [$] Near Wrigley Field is a new “Tulum-style” beer garden that hosts drag brunches and DJ sets. Tacos are the star of the menu, naturally, while the design centers on a breezy mélange of tropical plants, rattan, and macramé. Settle in for a NeoCon debrief on the hanging egg chairs or dine on margaritas and guac at the outdoor picnic tables. 3475 N. Clark Street; 773-687-8972.

Andros Taverna [$$]

fresh pick! Esmé [$$$] The husband-wife team of Jenner Tomaska and Katrina Bravo recently opened their fine-dining concept, its name French for “beloved.” The seasonally evolving tasting menu draws inspiration from Chicago’s own culture, with dishes like pierogi and salt-bake sturgeon. Beverages include twists on classic cocktails such as a poblano, artichoke, and raspberry Old Fashioned, and the wine list highlights producers of color and women winemakers. The restaurant’s mantra is an Alexander Calder quote—“above all, art should be fun”— and the couple plans to collaborate with local artists to support emerging talent. 2200 N. Clark Street; reservations through Resy.

George’s Deep Dish [$]

Porto [$$$]

When in Chicago, it’s only right to eat the local delicacy. This artisanal deep-dish pizza joint may be situated far north, but it’s worth the trip for offerings like Weasley’s Spicy Red Top with Italian sausage, fire-roasted red peppers, pickled cherry peppers, and ricotta. The dough is fermented for several days and baked at a low temperature, resulting in rich flavor. Be warned, though; these small-batch pies often sell out. Reserve yours on Tock.

At age 25, Valencian wunderkind Marcos Campos is the youngest chef to earn a Michelin star in the U.S., for this upscale seafood restaurant inspired by the flavors of the Galician coast. You may be surprised to find tinned fish on the menu, but that region is renowned for its conservas preservation technique. There’s also imported fresh seafood cooked over an open flame, which fills the two dining rooms with a smoky, nostalgic aroma.

6221 N. Clark Street; 773-801-1551.

1600 W. Chicago Avenue; 312-600-6336.

Fancy Plants Kitchen [$]

Rose Mary [$$]

A new farm-to-table vegan restaurant in Lincoln Park features healthy takes on deli standards with dishes like bagels with carrot lox and cashew cream cheese and chickpea “tuna” salad. As for beverages, try one of the unusual lattes with ingredients like fennel coriander or black pepper. Chef Kevin Schuder uses locally sourced produce, so it’s not unusual to see a change in menu when, say, fresh heirloom tomatoes still warm from the sun are delivered unexpectedly. Open for breakfast and lunch.

Chef Joe Flamm, a Top Chef alum, calls the cuisine at his debut restaurant, named for both of his grandmothers, “Adriatic drinking food.” It’s a blend of his Italian heritage and the bold flavors of Croatian cuisine. The menu offers hearty fare like roasted vegetables, pasta, and grilled seafood, and the rustic interior by L.A.’s Studio UNLTD is inspired by Croatian konobas, or family-owned taverns. Weather permitting, there’s a seasonal patio.

1443 W. Fullerton Avenue; 773-857-1588.

Gioia Ristorante e Pastificio [$$] Don a custom cloth bib before digging into tableside Paccheri with fresh tomato sauce and 24-month Parmigiano at this classic Italian joint, where at least seven types of pasta are made in-house daily. The refined decor is by New York’s D’Apostrophe Design, who chose natural materials like oak and marble to complement the authentic ingredients on the menu. 1133 W. Randolph Street; 773-672-8955.

Oooh Wee! It Is! [$] “Soul food with a twist” is the promise of this casual eatery from Mark and Shae Walker—the second outpost of their budding chainlet. Shrimp ‘n’grits, jerk chicken tips, and Creole fried corn make an appearance on the menu, as do short ribs, lobster tails, and a delicious banana pudding. The decor is fun and deliberately kitsch, with Marvel Comics props and cereal boxes dotting the space. 33 E. 83rd Street; 872-244-7505.

932 W. Fulton Market; 872-260-3921.

The Hot Dog Box [$] This adorable hot dog stand in a shipping container opened early in the pandemic, the brainchild of father-daughter duo Bobby Morelli and Brooklyn, age 9. Their delicious filet mignon steak dog comes with smokey crumbled bacon, sport peppers, carrotcabbage slaw, and a secret bourbon BBQ sauce, while other fun fixings include spicy truffle peanut butter sauce. While you wait, play the giant Connect Four game on hand for customers and afterwards, take home a piece of lemon pound cake to finish. 330 E. 51st Street; 708-730-4379.

The Hoxton, Chicago [$$] A trio of dining options are on offer at this recently opened hotel, all masterminded by AvroKO with Ennismore Design Studio. There’s Cabra Cevicheria, a plant-filled rooftop Peruvian restaurant helmed by Stephanie Izard; ground-level Cira, which serves Mediterranean fare, from pasta and lamb shawarma to lentil soup, all day long; and the appropriately dark and laid-back basement Lazy Bird cocktail bar,

which hosts live jazz, rock, and soul. Head to the pool terrace or lobby bar if a quick pop-in is more your style. 200 N. Green Street; 312-761-1700.

The Listening Room at the Exchange [$$] Now for something a little different: a 50-seat Japanese-style listening bar for vinyl obsessives. Located in Daniel Burnham’s historic 1904 Railway Exchange, just around the corner from the Art Institute of Chicago, the audiophile’s dream lounge plays myriad genres, so there’s something for all tastes. As for food, New American classics from James Beard–nominated chef Brian Huston cater to the peckish. 224 S. Michigan Avenue; 212-281-6165.

Venteux [$$] Chicago’s newest brasserie (named after the French word for windy, as in the Windy City) is located in the iconic Carbide & Carbon building, designed in 1929 by the city’s Burnham Brothers in lavish Art Deco style. It’s now a luxury hotel, the Pendry Chicago, and Venteux is its tentpole dining option. In the sunny café designed by Studio Munge, guests can settle into plush velvet booths with an espresso and a pastry for a moment’s reprieve. Further within, behind a screen of textured glass and brass, two swanky dining rooms offer a raw bar and French fine-dining staples such as caviar and escargot. 224 N. Michigan Avenue; 312-777-9003.

Wake ’n Bacon [$] This Filipino brunch spot in Lakeview offers up fun dishes like an adobe chicken Philly sandwich au jus, ube pancakes made of the nutty purple yams and coconut milk, and a bacon flight (apropos of the eatery name). The twist? You can add CBD to anything on the menu, including the Lavender Chamomile cold brew and the aforementioned dipping jus. Instagrammable flowers dripping from the ceiling set the casual boho vibe. 420 W. Belmont Avenue; 773-880-5100.

It’s always a treat to see an iconic Warhol in person, and now there’s even more opportunity to do so in the Windy City. In December, The Art Institute of Chicago reopened its galleries of contemporary art, unveiling the largest gift in its 136-year history: a donation from Chicago collectors Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson comprising 44 paintings, sculptures, and photographs by major artists. These new additions chart the course of the most adventurous art movements since the 1950s, beginning with the work of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly, who forged a path from Abstract Expressionism toward Pop Art. Pop itself is represented by Roy Lichtenstein canvases and landmark pieces from Andy Warhol, including two self-portraits. Advance ticket purchase required; reserve at sales.artic.edu/admissions. 111 S. Michigan Avenue; 312-443-3600.

In response to a tumultuous 19 months, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art—the museum for marginalized outsider artists—opens a timely exhibition on trauma, hardship, and resilience. On show are sandstone sculptures by Mr. Imagination, who changed his name from Gregory Warmack following spiritual visions experienced after a coma caused by a neighborhood shooting; fiber sculptures by Judith Scott, who was institutionalized and isolated for most of her life; and artist-musician Lonnie Holley’s kinetically charged, wire-framed found-object sculptures. Also accompanying the exhibition are banners and quilts from the Social Justice Sewing Academy. Many were made during the organization’s Remembrance Project workshops, which honor lives lost by police brutality, gang violence, hate crimes, and other forms of community violence. The banners are then given to activist groups for public display: solidarity in the form of memorial. Advance, timed-entry tickets required; reserve on Tock. 756 N. Milwaukee Avenue; 312-624-9487.

“Surface is Only a Material Vehicle for Spirit” Curated by sculptor Kennedy Yanko, “Surface” at Kavi Gupta brings together works by eight voices in the field of contemporary abstraction, including a new site-specific installation by Brooklyn-based Katie Bell, whose whimsical architectural arrangements make use of cast-off building product remnants. Other highlights: vibrant pieces by multimedia artist Monica Rezman, who describes her work as a dance between painting and sculpture, and ceramics from Jessica Stoller, who uses clay and the grotesque as vehicles to explore idealized femininity. “Alfredo Jaar: The Structure of Images” In our media-saturated world, what stories remain untold? Using images, lights, and mirrors, Chilean-born conceptual artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago ask viewers to acknowledge under-recognized subjects: Ethiopian refugees amid the Eastern Sudan crisis and remarkable but overlooked women including human rights lawyer Shada Nasser and author/activist Nawal El Saadawi. Renowned for his six-year-long Rwanda Project (about the 1994 Rwandan genocide) and The Cloud, a 2015 performance project on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border, Jaar consistently addresses injustices with nuance and compassion. This exhibit features a selection of key works that span 30 years. Open 10AM–5PM daily, except Monday (closed) and Tuesday (10AM– 9PM), in the fourth-floor Cohen and Stone Family Galleries. 220 E. Chicago Avenue; 312-280-2660.
