EDITOR’S COMMENT
Sales defy expectations Consumers are continuing to invest in their homes despite the state of the economy and political uncertainty Forgive me if I return to a familiar topic, but furniture and flooring sales continue to defy expectations, the state of the economy, the replacement cycle and political uncertainty. After the drop in May’s sales, the expectation was that this was the conformation that the post-lockdown boom had run its course. But then performance bounces back in June. Yes, inflation accounts for a chunk of the increase, but even allowing for that, shoppers are still buying furniture and flooring when disposable incomes are meant to have been significantly hit, and it’s unlikely that the sofa ordered when non-essential retailers re-opened is already being replaced. Perhaps shoppers saved a heck of a lot more during lockdown than anyone realised. As ever with statistics, there are quibbles and you believe what you believe. Research commissioned by Headlam gives it the opinion that it has gained market share in the first half of this year despite its UK residential sales falling. The record temperatures of the past few weeks have brought many comments (wrongly) comparing it to 1976, which as a four-and-a-half year old in North-East Scotland I remember thinking was unusual weather. It has also brought complaints about something we didn’t have then: artificial grass. Pets and children have burned their feet, with homeowners complaining that no-one told them that their ‘grass’ would get so hot and it needed watered to keep it cool. Firstly, it says quite a lot about a lack of common sense – it’s plastic, of course it’ll get hot in the sun – and secondly, were shoppers not told that this could happen? In this issue we can finally reveal who you voted for in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2022. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to you for voting: they are your awards and wouldn’t happen without your input. The winner of the hamper was of Paul Ivory of Avonvale Carpets, Bath.

NEWS
June sees record furniture sales as flooring jumps June was a record month for furniture and lighting sales in Great Britain after sales leapt by almost a quarter, while flooring sales came close to setting a new record. Furniture and lighting sales in England, Scotland and Wales jumped by 22.5% compared with May 2022, reaching £1.529bn. Sales were 4.17% ahead of June 2021. According to Office for National Statistics data, as well as the best June since comparable records began in January 1986, it was the third best month of 438, with only March 2022 (£1.607bn) and December 2020 (£1.53bn) performing better. Sales were 33.9% higher than June 2020 and 11.78% higher than June 2019. Flooring sales achieved the third best June performance in history. Retail sales jumped by 21.96% compared with June 2021, reaching £253.44m. June was the tenth best month of 438 months since comparable records began in January 1986. Only in 13 of those months have sales topped £250m. It was the best June since 2007 (£256.88m) and 1997 (£261.44m). Compared with May 2022, sales were 15.9% higher; 140.1% higher than June 2020, and 80.6% higher than June 2019. March 2008 remains the best performing month, with sales of £290.4m, ahead of March 2022 (£289.79m).
Inflation on the up again Furniture and flooring inflation climbed again in June. The annual rate of inflation of household furniture increased from 16.4% to 16.6% (although still below March’s 17.2%), according to ONS. In June 2021 the rate was 6.6%. The furniture and furnishings index also rose, from 16.2% to 16.3%, while garden furniture was static with a 25.5% increase. Lighting saw prices rise by 11.3%, up from May’s 10.5% rise. For flooring, the rate rose from 8.1% to 8.3%, according to ONS, as higher carpet and rug prices offset a slowdown in increases of smooth flooring. Carpets and rugs saw an annual rise of 7%, up from May’s 6.1%, while other flooring saw the annual rise slow from 21% to 15.2%. In June 2021 carpet inflation was 5.9% and 10.7% for smooth flooring.
Directors’ investment Four of Likewise’s directors have used the proceeds of the group’s maiden dividend to buy more shares in the flooring wholesaler. Just days after the payout in July, Tony Brewer, Likewise ceo; Andrew Simpson, Likewise non-executive director; Adrian Laffey, Likewise residential director and James Kellett, Likewise contract director invested a combined £50,093 in 179,800 shares. This increased their respective holdings to 12.2%; 8.09%; 2.79% and 2.24%.

‘Prudent’ Made warns losses could double Made has warned shareholders that losses could be double that what it had forecast just two months ago. The etailer says that it expects adjusted EBITDA losses to be between £50m-£70m for 2022, up from May’s forecast of £15m-£35m. Sales in the first half have dropped by 19%. In May it forecast that sales would be flat at best and be down 15% at worst. In March it was predicting growth of 25%-35%. It said it had overstocked and selling off the excess had hit profits. It also warned that jobs could go as it looked to save £10m-£15m a year. ‘Areas of focus include looking at forward stock buying, warehousing and sourcing markets, and reviewing our operational structure and headcount,’ it says. It had
previously told shareholders that reducing lead times by holding stock increased sales. ‘It’s clear that things are tough for consumers at the moment. Understandably, we’ve seen a worsening in consumer confidence since May and this has had an impact on this period’s performance. As such it’s prudent for us to take a conservative view of what we can expect in the second half of this year,’ says Nicola Thompson, Made ceo. ‘To enable us to continue executing on our strategy we're taking steps to address non-strategic costs, as well as considering options to allow us to strengthen the balance sheet sufficiently to navigate what will undoubtedly continue to be challenging conditions. We're confident that this will put us in a strong position for the coming years.’

Headlam sees profitability increase despite residential weakness Flooring distributor Headlam has seen underlying profits increase in the first half of the year, despite a drop in UK residential sales. The group says residential sales dropped by 5% while commercial sales rose by 4.9%, resulting in a UK sales drop of 2.9%. Sales in France and The Netherlands rose by 5.1%. Total sales were £6.1m lower at £328.8m. Despite this the group says it has increased its UK market share. Price increases helped offset higher
operating costs, with underlying pre-tax profits up £600,000 at £17.3m. ‘We are pleased with our performance thus far in 2022, particularly given the economic backdrop. Profitability has been improved, market share gains made, and our strategy is proving to provide a countermeasure and protection against a weaker underlying market. We believe we are set fair especially for when headwinds ease,’ says Chris Payne, Headlam chief executive in the group’s pre-close trading update.

Beds and bedroom wholesaler FWG Sales has bought Millbrook Beds from its founding family. The Croll family has sold the bed operations to the Chester-based company, which is owned by Andrew McClements and Jane Waugh. Its other operations include cleaning, repairing and painting military vehicles and fitting flooring. Bed operations saw average growth of 25.4% in the year to 30 June 2021, while Millbrook (UK) paid dividends of £4.7m, up from £1.7m. At the time it said it was on track to outperform the previous year.

Facts matter
Despite claims of an invisible defect, say what you see Another letter! I’d lost count of the letters, emails and calls about this particular client. I’d been instructed by a firm of solicitors to take a look at a property he owned and rented out. There had been some issues during the installation of a new kitchen and bathroom, and his dining suite and dresser had apparently sustained damage when a fractured pipe ‘sprayed everywhere’. I met him at the property. He was waiting in his wide-wheeled American pickup and designer robe (yes, he’d come straight from a workout at the gym). The tenant let us in and led us through to the kitchen, where the landlord emptied lots of cupboards and then pointed underneath the unit at the end furthest from the dining room. ‘It was that pipe under there!’ he said, so I got to my knees and peered at the pipe near to the wall. He then pointed out the rusty fluorescent lamp – a relic of the 1990s – the roughness of the door linings, and various other items, ending with the dining table, chairs and a dresser against the kitchen wall. ‘Saturated,’ he said. ‘Water was dripping everywhere. Just make sure you include that in your report.’ I took a good look. The dining table had no moisture ingress. The chairs had no water stains. The particleboard shelves in his cabinet had no swelling. I didn’t say it, but I doubted whether any water had reached anything above plinth height and then only within a metre or so of the burst. I listed the items that needed attention, but it was a far shorter list than the client was expecting. The solicitor arranged a conference call. The client had a list of questions, but they were all thinly disguised attacks on my opinion. It didn’t seem to matter to the client whether there was damage or not, the fact that the furniture had been wet meant it was damaged. Even if you couldn’t see the damage. Apparently
14
Interiors Monthly August 2022
I inspected the furniture and cabinets thoroughly
the wood was now weaker, it was likely to have internal mould and maybe even rot. No one would buy water-damaged furniture, so it had lost its value. He wanted this included in the report. It was a long phone call. It took time to go through the facts and establish that I could not find any signs of water damage, that an expert can only report on what he or she knows from direct observation, and that an expert’s duty is to the court and this overrides any duty to a client. In the course of the conversation the hard-done-by landlord remained convinced that the furniture now had an invisible defect, for which he wanted to be compensated. The conversation only ended because I took
a firm stance. ‘I cannot and will not say what you want me to say. I know you’re not happy about that, but I am not going to change my mind unless you can show me evidence of damage that I as an expert cannot find.’ So the sight of the solicitor’s heading on the envelope filled me with dismay. Until I read the letter: One final question regarding your report. Please confirm the cost estimate for the remedial works outlined in paragraph 37. I think the message had finally got through. EXPERIENCES
Summertime blues Too hot? Too wet? Customers (and products) will come when they want, says our correspondent THE RETAILER Fludes Carpets When it’s wet, we blame the rain for a sales slowdown; when it is dry and sunny, we cry: ‘It is too hot!’ Realistically, we can always flag up the weather or an event such as the Cup Final to explain why the public have stopped visiting our shops and buying flooring. It is easy to forget that customers will still need new carpet and flooring, so when the weather changes they’ll come and make the purchase they were going to make anyway. It’s concerning when there is a two or

three week fall in sales and it’s tempting to hurriedly put a sale on to encourage people in. If you think about it, all you are doing is damaging your gross profit, because that customer will come in when they are ready. If people are short of money (as we all are at present) a promotion will still not necessarily work. And those with disposable income will shop when they wish and will probably buy good quality product. It seems that the great ‘price hike’ from our suppliers is beginning to ease, and the
overall increases seem to be about 15% to 20%. Theoretically that means we can sell the same amount of carpet and flooring as last year but take more money than last year. That is providing everyone passes the new prices on to the customer, rather than effectively giving the customer a 15%-20% discount. Price changes may have eased, but the problem of stock shortages is still with us. As I write this, we are in early July and I have just been quoted delivery due by early November on an order. It is lucky that we have an understanding customer – for now, at least. With the great European shutdown upon us, things can only get worse. Perhaps it is time to ‘Buy British’. Looking through the social media groups for fitters and flooring, there still seems to be a shortage of fitters, particularly for hard flooring. Housebuilders and hotels are very busy, if the requests for fitters to complete jobs is anything to go by. We are noticing a rise in requests to fit carpets for customers who have purchased their own products online. The Flooring Show at Harrogate is nearly upon us and it will be interesting to see if there are many new ranges from our suppliers. Colour, texture and more soft-feel carpets are being shown to us right now, and judging from the trial samples, several of the older ranges will be making way for bright, fresh colours and soft textured flooring. It is time for colour and texture: it will give us something to talk to customers about. And that is generally the first step on the path to a sale. Talking to colleague retailers in our area, it does seem that the past four weeks have been tough for business. When the current heatwave has passed, we will have to blame the rain again. SUSTAINABILITY
The time is now
Carpet backing with Niaga tag
Endless recyclability and full product disclosure
What does the carpet of the future look like? Recyclable? Infinitely reusable? Made of one material? Resource-friendly? Come September this will be the now, not the future. Materials company Niaga and German carpet producer Object Carpet have combined to develop a range of polyester carpets that is just that: polyester. No other material is used. This allows it to be recycled almost infinitely. Polyester is the most frequently recycled synthetic material in the world, as it retains its original characteristics and can therefore be used throughout many lifecycles with the same highquality application. ‘Together we wanted to develop the highest quality, healthiest, most sustainable and first completely recyclable carpet in the world,’ says Lars Engelke, Object Carpet product development md. The two companies developed a vision: designed for endless life – forever young during the development process. This fits with Niaga’s principle of only using ‘clean and infinite materials’ such as glass, metal and wood that can be reused in the same or similar products. Product design forms the basis for sustainable, healthy and circular products in terms of technical structure and
20

material composition. Likewise, honesty and transparency with regard to materials, production processes and relevant product-specific data are imperative for a circular economy. ‘Kill waste. Design for reuse,’ is the concept encapsulated by Chris Reutelingsperger, Niaga founder. But there is another factor: a recyclable product that isn’t returned won’t be recycled. To aid recycling, the carpets will feature (in common with all other products Niaga is involved with) a label that indicates that the product should not be discarded and also provides additional information, such
as the material composition and return procedure. ‘The return of the products is central to the circular economy. Developing a recyclable, resource-friendly and clean carpet has been and still remains one of the greatest challenges in this company’s history. It is therefore all the more exciting that in Niaga we were able to find a partner that can contribute its technical and material expertise to this development,’ says Engelke. The carpet is suitable for contract environments as well as homes. ‘It is a carpet with lifelong value because the material is seen as a

resource with value, where age and condition become irrelevant. For comparison: a traditional textile floorcovering is a mix of many different materials with various functions, such as yarn, supporting materials and bonding elements for the backing that ensures stability and weight. These materials are bonded together in an irreversible way. In addition, many of these fabrics and materials are used in carpet not because of their functions but rather due to their availability or low price. Here, the sustainability and recyclability of these materials play a secondary role, if any,’ says Engelke. Object Carpet has invested in a production line for the range at its Krefeld production site. ‘This state-of-the-art and innovative

production facility for manufacturing polyester-based carpets forms the central building block in a comprehensive carpet production – completely in line with Made in Germany principles. The transparent manufacturing offers customers and partners the opportunity to experience the creation and production process. Visitors can use all their senses – seeing, smelling, touching – to learn how a production runs without waste, how and what is recycled, how few resources this takes and what the finished product resembles. What is particularly interesting here is the innovative coating facility, which uses a process that requires no gas or water and is 90% more efficient than conventional production methods. ‘Developing a holistic concept from
many approaches, ideas and solutions all the way to implementing a circular economy requires resolve, interest and enthusiasm. For this reason, our motto “Join the future” calls on customers, partners, associations, networks and recycling experts to participate and get involved in the circular carpet project. Recycling can only happen if everyone has recognised the principle of valuable raw materials and helps integrate products back into the manufacturing process. This is the only way to establish and implement a comprehensive recycling process, from the product, return and recirculation all the way to recycling, raw materials and resources. There’s no time to waste.’ Visit: www.object-carpet.com www.niaga.world

We’re so impressed that something so personal can have such a wider reaching application,’ say the judges. The Habitat Future Design Award (Week One) prize was won by Madison Craig, a graduate of Heriot-Watt University for It Takes A Village. ‘Madison is a fantastic creative who draws inspiration from her childhood. The technique allows for universal development.’ The Made.com Collaboration Award was won by Aamana Bibi Nawaz, Birmingham City University product and furniture design graduate for Vlamp, a combined vase and lamp. ‘An iconic design with beautiful simple form. Sport star La-Z-Boy’s latest offer is designed for TV watching and more La-Z-Boy UK has unveiled a new Spectator seat, designed for customers wanting to sit back and relax in front of major televised sporting fixtures, such as the forthcoming NFL London Games. The brand has entered into a threeyear sponsorship deal with NFL that sees it become the official furniture partner of the NFL London Games. Three major matches in the 2022 season will be held in the UK in October. To celebrate, the brand has released a new rocker recliner, which is perfect for sports fans. The Spectator is available for UK furniture retailers to order now and will be on sale to customers in September, just in time for the NFL matches. The recline and rocking motions mean Spectator can be used in a variety of ways, allowing users to find their own favourite method of relaxing in the chair. As it is manually operated, it also offers flexibility in where it can be placed as it doesn’t need to be near a socket. ‘The Spectator has been carefully designed to tick all the right boxes when it comes to comfort, luxury and convenience. Ideal for relaxing in to watch the big match, the recliner is extremely versatile and is definitely not just for sports fans,’ says Trevor Hailes, La-Z-Boy international merchandising director. La-Z-Boy UK’s sponsorship deal with the NFL is a celebration of two world-famous American brands coming to Britain. The recliner brand is manufacturing an increasing number of ranges at its factory in Colne, Lancashire and the NFL is recognising the growing interest in American football in the UK with its games in London in October.
Minnesota Vikings will play New Orleans Saints at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 2 October, while New York Giants will take on Green Bay Packers at the same venue on 9 October. The final UK match will take place on 30 October at Wembley Stadium when Jacksonville Jaguars play Denver Broncos. Aubade
Be yourself Let your bedroom furniture make a statement Of all the rooms in a home, the bedroom is undoubtedly the one place where you can forget convention and express your design tastes. After all friends and neighbours aren’t (usually) going to see behind the door. For Visionnaire this has allowed it to throw caution to the wind and be bold (no mention of bling here) with its latest collection. The Aubade bed, is a geometric composition of full and empty volumes and a combination of luxury with the backlit Patagonia marble placed in the headboard. The padded headboard, divided into geometric elements, is set within this precious marble frame, with two small lights inserted inside the padded side profiles. The bedside unit echoes the bed’s metal base trim. Ultrasound continues the metal trim theme but in a champagne finish, while the base and headboard sport fluid and reverberating lines. While most manufacturers look to increase storage space in wardrobes, Leonardo does the opposite. A single leather-covered door and ribbed base have been removed so you can fit in a marble statue, transforming the wardrobe from a functional item to the centre of attention with a hidden gem. The curved ends contrast with the steel and marble handles. Visit: www.visionnaire-home.com

To paraphrase Jane Austen, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a designer in search of something a little different must get out the Au. Gold does something to a look – and for some the temptation is hard to resist. Roberto Cavalli’s Elgon combines Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese art of giving new life to fragments, with a

bit of trademark bling to help it make a statement. Jumbo Collection’s offer just wouldn’t be the same without a touch (or more) of gold and its Chaine bed is no different, combining its trademark classic French look with a patinated antique gold finish. For Elie Saab Maison, regal grandeur is at the heart of its 2022 collection and
the Kate bed demonstrates designer Carlo Colombo’s direction of travel with the fashion brand. But what to put on the floor? Bethan Gray’s Inky Dhow rug for cc tapis is the obvious choice. Visit: www.robertocavalli.com www.jumbocollection.it www.eliesaab.com www.cc-tapis.com

Kristoffersen Carpets & Flooring Best Flooring Retailer (4+ stores) For Norrie Kristoffersen, quality and service have been key since he opened in Portobello, east of Edinburgh in 1993. Today the company has six stores across the city and surrounding area, extending into the Borders. Last September local retailer Cochrane’s joined its portfolio, extending its reach to East Lothian. ‘Great service is so hard to find, but it’s worse when you’re badgered by assistants desperate to flog the latest “special offer”. Most of us just want a wee bit of help when we ask for it, from a salesperson who’s knowledgeable, professional and friendly. And we want to be able to get that kind of service locally, without driving for hours,’ he says.
Woolton Carpets Best Flooring Retailer (1-3 stores) In common with many flooring retailers, Woolton Carpets enjoyed a bumper 2021/22, with sales up a quarter: the end of year fitting diary closed in midNovember, such was demand. Run by the Griffin family, headed by owner Tony, long-serving staff are key for the Liverpool retailer, with 12 of its 15 staff having been there for at least 17 years. ‘We’re all in it together, if a job needs doing, go and do it. We’re a team, we have no bosses. We all know what we’re talking about – if we don’t know now, we never will!’ says Griffin. In the past two years the store has seen huge growth in LVT sales and has reduced its overseas buying of carpet as it looks to strengthen its supply chain, with a focus on UK manufacturers. 2022 marks the company’s 60th anniversary, and three decades since Griffin bought the company, 17 years after he joined from school.
Housing Units Best Furniture Retailer (1-3 stores)
Holloways of Ludlow Best Furniture Retailer (4+ stores) Offering contemporary designs that will last a lifetime is the aim of Holloways of Ludlow. The company has been run by Mark Holloway since 2002, but was founded in 1985 by his stepfather Bob. This year saw the opening of branches in Bath and Winchester as it expanded outside of London and Kent. ‘We believe hugely in showrooms and know our customers still want to touch products and interact with our team of experts in person. We’ve also noticed the desire to shop locally. Most of the UK has been underserved with high-end design furniture: our approach is about bringing it closer to home,’ says Holloway.
45_[AW_RetailersAug22]SP2.indd 45
From its origins in 1947 as a builders’ merchant, Housing Units has long been regarded as one of the country’s prime destinations for the home. The Failsworth, Manchester company is constantly evolving – physically and online – with recent investments including a furniture and accessories department, a fireplace department and an area devoted to furniture and furnishings for smaller spaces, reflecting today’s new homes: Modern Living. ‘Much has changed since 1947 but Housing Units still remains a family business that cares and is committed to providing great service, quality, choice and value. Home is very strongly at the heart of what we do, and we are constantly searching to bring our customers The Perfect Everything for the Home,’ says Nick Fox, Housing Units ceo.
Mattress Online Best Online Retailer If any sector had a ‘good lockdown’ it was bed etailers. With stores closed, shoppers turned online to buy a bed or mattress they were probably spending more time in. Mattress Online proved it wasn’t just a one-season wonder, with higher average orders, sales growth and top online reviews continuing once high street competition returned. It joined the high street this year with a store in Skipton, North Yorkshire, with plans for nine more across the country over the next five years as sales approach £40m. As it approaches its 20th anniversary it has been busy strengthening its senior management team.

Victoria Carpets is as passionate today about its products as it was when the company began back in 1895. It is its innovative designs, on-trend colours, extensive product portfolio and outstanding quality that make it the retailers’ favourite. ‘Winning Best UK Flooring Manufacturer is a huge accolade for the business. We pride ourselves on the support system we provide our customers with, because at the end of the day, there would be no business if it wasn’t for them. We have achieved this not only by having an amazing internal team, but also by making sure that with every range launch, we are bringing something new and fresh to the market,’ says James Caldwell, Victoria Carpets sales director. ‘The products we have launched all have contemporary, on-trend colour, well thought-out specifications and, above all, deliver the quality that everyone expects from Victoria Carpets. Every product in our portfolio earns its place through its value proposition, luxury offering or colour and design, and each range is available on dedicated POS.’ The company will be returning to The Flooring Show in Harrogate again
this year, where its full product portfolio will be showcased. One display will be the new Habberley range. Along with a palette refresh introducing seven new colours, it has also welcomed two new designs: Habberley Ridge, a straight loop and Habberley Herringbone, a diagonal loop. These both give the completed range a new depth and texture element. One of the unique selling points of Habberley is its construction of 70% wool and 30% Tencel. It demonstrates perfectly how recycled materials can be used in flooring as this becomes increasingly more important to end-users. Tencel is a fibre made from wood pulp, and is not only extremely durable but also extremely soft to the touch, and gives the pile a crisp, bright colour. The refreshed Strathmore will also be on display, which is a collection of 12 new Berbers. Taking inspiration from the Scottish Highlands, the colours for this new collection incorporate sophisticated flecks of colour you would expect to see in fauna and flora of hedgerows and mountain passes. Being an 1/8th gauge gives the carpet a beautiful open appearance, better to appreciate the colour palette, whilst the addition of 10% acrylic and 10% polypropylene to 80% wool keeps the finish soft yet durable. The EasiCare polypropylene ranges have also seen updates, with Aura receiving a colour refresh, and upcoming is the launch of Super Twist, a sumptuous six-ply, 100oz carpet that will make your fingers and toes tingle in anticipation. Cormar Carpet Company Best Carpet Manufacturer

Interiors Monthly August 2022
For the tenth year in succession Cormar Carpet Company is delighted to be voted the Best Carpet Manufacturer by readers of Interiors Monthly. Receiving the award again is a great privilege and the company would like to say a huge thank you to all its customers, suppliers and colleagues for their ongoing support over the past year. A truly British success story, Cormar has been manufacturing carpet in the UK for more than 65 years from its mills in Lancashire. The key to its success has been its amazing team of people that work behind the scenes to ensure a first-class delivery service to retail, wholesale and contract customers. In addition to the team spirit, the family-owned business has continued to invest over the past 12 months. In the past year, three new ranges have been successfully launched into the trade. Cormar has expanded its family of easyclean carpets with the addition of Primo Tweeds and Linwood, followed by the introduction of Riva, a luxurious deeppile carpet offering a balance between the practical living qualities of easy-clean polypropylene carpet and the sumptuous feeling of a soft deep carpet. This year has also seen the relaunch of Cormar’s popular Apollo Plus range, now available in an extensive palette of 22 heather and plain shades. Another service enhancement is Cormar’s award-winning trade portal. Since its launch in 2011, it has gone from strength to strength with 59% of
customers now placing orders online. With a host of new features introduced this year, the portal is now better than ever, making it the place to go for online trading amongst carpet retailers. In the past year, Cormar has invested over £75,000 towards improvements such as a full system re-build, a new after-sales area, and a number of other features requested by portal users, enabling customers to carry out most of their interactions with Cormar online, should they choose to do so. This year also marks the completion of one of Cormar’s largest investments in its backing plant. More than £600,000 has been invested this year as part of an overall upgrade strategy. Recent work involved the replacement of the front-end entry equipment responsible for preparing unbacked rolls prior to latex application. Cormar has been at the forefront of carpet manufacturing for the last seven decades. Key to its success is its family business philosophy. ‘To be awarded the Best Carpet Manufacturer for the tenth year in a row is a huge honour for all at Cormar Carpet Company. This year we’ve made huge investments in the business that take us forward as a dynamic and leading-edge player in the market, so it’s great for the team to be recognised once again for the hard work and determination that they have put in,’ says David Cormack, Cormar Carpet Company marketing director. Hypnos Best Bed Manufacturer (Upmarket)
54
Interiors Monthly August 2022
As a business that prides itself on working in partnership with its customers, family-owned British bed manufacturer Hypnos is delighted to have been recognised by readers as Best Bed Manufacturer (Upmarket) in the Interiors Monthly Awards. ‘To be recognised in this way means a great deal to the whole team at Hypnos. We’ve worked hard to deliver on our promises and thank all the readers for their support. In the past year we have continued to create forward-thinking products and initiatives that meet the ever-evolving needs of interior designers and their consumers, particularly the eco-conscious,’ says James Keen, Hypnos ceo. Indeed, as innovators within sustainable bed manufacturing, and winners of the NBF’s first Sustainability Award in 2021, retailers, consumers
and interior designers are responding well to Hypnos’ collaborative partnerships with farmers and producers. Hypnos recently teamed up with John Lewis to launch a mattress range using wool from sheep farmers that supplied its sister brand Waitrose. The initiative highlighted the plight of the British wool industry and ensured farmers were paid a fair price for their wool. Waitrose’s Sheep to Sleep campaign went on to win the Sustainability Initiative of the Year in The Grocer Gold Awards 2022. Hypnos also collaborated closely with John Lewis to develop its own brand Classic Eco Collection 1200 Pocket Spring mattress, which was awarded the Best Wool-Free Mattress Award in PETA’s 2022 Vegan Homeware Awards. ‘We pride ourselves on working in close partnership with our customers to provide them with solutions to meet the demands of their consumers. We create comfortable beds made from responsibly sourced, sustainable materials, offering true comfort with integrity, and by collaborating with certified suppliers such as The Woolkeepers, Better Cotton Initiative, CottonConnect and many others, Hypnos goes beyond carbon neutrality to ensure that the wellbeing of both consumers and the planet remains at the centre of the business.’ The recently launched GOTS and Soil Association Certification certified luxury collection, Origins Organic, is endorsed by the Eden Project, which is Hypnos’ sustainability and charity partner, helping it to engage colleagues, support local communities, encourage sustainable living, education, conservation and responsible eco-friendly product design. As part of the partnership, a charitable donation from the sale of each mattress from the Origins Organic Collection will be made to the Eden Project. ‘It’s an exciting time for Hypnos and we look forward to demonstrating our commitment to sustainable, comfortable sleep further at the Autumn shows,’ says Keen. The bespoke high spring count luxury mattresses offer a sumptuous feel to satisfy the comfort demanded by the mid and high-end market. The Shire Signature Collection has been developed to achieve high shop-floor margins comfortably on the cost price, while still being considered good value. Each of the the Signature Collection, 6000, 8000 and 10,000 mattresses is now also available in a Pillow Top option. Emma – The Sleep Company Best Bed Manufacturer (Bed In A Box)
58
Interiors Monthly August 2022
The world’s number one direct-toconsumer sleep brand, Emma – The Sleep Company, has had plenty of reasons to celebrate so far in 2022. Now with more than 30 active markets, Emma is also the most international direct-to-consumer sleep brand, having expanded to a further 18 countries since 2019. Its growing team of more than 850 ‘Emmies’ now base themselves in one of five worldwide offices – Frankfurt, Lisbon, Manila, Shanghai and Mexico City – or work remotely within the market, with many key hires being made in the retail team as Emma’s omnichannel strategy continues to be one of its key growth levers. In February, the company reported a worldwide turnover of €645m for 2021 – a growth rate of 59%. That made it the fourth full financial year growing profitably from cash flow. The UK continues to be a key contributor to that success, with Emma’s UK teams investing heavily into the brand, outspending the more traditional brands in the market. Building on its success of securing 75 product awards in 2021, 2022 has also seen significant wins in the consumer awards sphere. In addition to picking up two further Which? Best Buy awards for its Emma Helix Hybrid and Emma Diamond Hybrid, adding to the Best Buy
picked up for the Emma Smart Hybrid last summer, the company has also been awarded Best Bed Manufacturer (Bed In A Box) by Interiors Monthly readers. ‘We couldn’t have asked for a better first half of the year, particularly given the current economic climate. We’re continuing to grow, continuing to pick up fantastic awards like Interior Monthly’s Best Bed Manufacturer (Bed In A Box), and continuing to deliver products that combine smart technology with worldclass engineering and expertise from our in-house sleep lab, to ensure we’re adapting to the needs to the modern sleeper,’ says Neil Robinson, Emma – The Sleep Company, country sales director – retail UK & Ireland. ‘Our breakout Emma Motion range, which includes Emma’s first smart mattress, will be a gamechanger for us. We’re on a mission to revolutionise the sleep market and defy the rolled foam stereotype, and I’m looking forward to the launch of the Motion range later this year. I’m confident our customers will love it just as much as we do.’ As well as attending AIS and Minerva trade shows this year, Emma will now be exhibiting at The Bed Show for the first time this September. ‘We’d like to thank everyone who voted for Forte as Best Bedroom Manufacturer. We are delighted that our ranges are appreciated by customers in the UK,’ says Victoria Ross, Forte UK sales manager. Forte is a leading self-assembly furniture producer exporting its products to more than 45 countries. It has four modern furniture factories as well as a chipboard factory in Poland, which fully covers its demand for this basic raw material for production. It constantly follows the changing technology by investing heavily in digitisation and automation of processes and has been offering customers functional design, high quality products and reliable service for 30 years. ‘Our team of designers and product development experts never stop researching the changing needs of consumers, searching for new solutions, unique decors and functionalities. Their ideas are put into projects from which complete collections are created – always with care and respect for the natural environment, taking into account the highest quality and ethical standards,’ says Ross. Forte offers a variety of furniture for nearly every room: dining and living room, bedroom, children’s and young people’s rooms, as well as for the office, hall and bathroom. There are almost 3,000 different products in the offer and every year the company introduces approximately 600 new designs. It has its own sales organisations in its most important markets, including
the UK. They are made up of teams of employees who, locally, offer stores extensive support in the preparation of an appropriate offer, sale and promotion of Forte’s furniture. The collections are tailored to individual markets as requirements in different parts of the world vary in terms of styles, colours and dimensions, designed using information from latest trend reports and furniture retailers with whom Forte works in close partnership. Forte cares for the product at every stage of its development, by controlling production materials, designs in accordance with European safety standards, daily quality monitoring and reliable delivery to customers. ‘It is important to take an individual approach and create a space in which you can feel comfortable and safe. The bedroom is the most private part of the house, where the day begins and ends, and it should be both beautiful and functional. That is why Forte’s collections respond to both trends and individual needs of users. Forte designers carefully select individual furniture collections to appeal to UK customer tastes and the beds accommodate standard mattress sizes offered on the British market. ‘If you want to learn more about our offer and see the latest Forte collections, we invite you to visit our showroom during the September MOW fair in Bad Salzuflen, Germany, where in the 43,000sqft Forte exhibition centre we will present our latest designs,’ says Ross. La-Z-Boy Best Leather Upholstery Manufacturer
Shoppers can get a better idea of how the upholstery will look in their home
68
Interiors Monthly August 2022
A new online feature on La-Z-Boy UK’s website will make it easier for consumers to decide whether a sofa or chair is right for their home. The brand, which has won Interior Monthly’s award for Best Leather Upholstery Manufacturer, is constantly looking at innovative ways to make things easier for both furniture retailers and end-customers. The website now includes an online configurator that allows users to see how products look in different colours, materials and finishes. Those using the website can switch views between leather and fabric covers, where both options are available. And customers can see how sofas and chairs made in La-Z-Boy’s UK factory in Colne, Lancashire will look both with and without accent cushions. The configurator is an ongoing project but most of the collections now come with this feature, with more to be added over the coming weeks and months. The eventual aim is for customers to be able to personalise every product featured on the La-Z-Boy website. The feature can be used by retailers to download high-resolution images of products to match what they currently have on the shopfloor. This means they will no longer have to rely solely on stock images of collections to show customers what they have available to buy. There is also additional technology that
allows customers to see how a sofa or chair will actually look in their own living space. The View In Your Room feature uses augmented reality to bring the personalised product to life in the customer’s home. Using a smartphone camera, customers can look at an area of their home and see how the chair or sofa would look in the space. This will give people a more accurate idea of the finished product, rather than simply relying on looking at display models and leather and fabric swatches. ‘We are always looking at ways we can make life easier for both retailers and customers. At La-Z-Boy, we are proud of the wide range of options available for each of our ranges but we appreciate this can make it challenging for people to get a clear picture of exactly how each piece will look in the colour, upholstery and finish of their choice. Our configurator takes the guesswork out of the process as it allows people to experiment with different choices until they find one that is perfect for them. They can then use the augmented reality feature to see how it would look in their home,’ says Adam Morley, La-Z-Boy UK head of marketing. The technology can also be incorporated into retailers’ websites so their customers can benefit. Visit: www.la-z-boy.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2022
BerryAlloc’s Les Essentiels, Les Exclusifs and new Les Iconics engineered wood collections have seen it crowned Best Solid/ Engineered Wood Supplier. There’s no denying that wood flooring is one of the most desirable floors for today’s homes, but it is not without its complications. Often complex to fit, difficult to take care of and with a lofty price tag, it’s the preserve of a select purchaser. However, this is something BerryAlloc is changing, with its collections of engineered wood flooring that make the desirable more attainable: something that’s been recognised by Interiors Monthly readers. At BerryAlloc, its engineered wood flooring collections all have the same goal: to make sure that more homes can enjoy the natural beauty of real wood in floors made for living. So, whether picking from the Les Essentiels collection of 10 classic styles, the trend looks and XXL formats of Les Exclusifs or the parquet laying patterns of Les Iconics, homes can enjoy a floor made for modern life. ‘We’ve worked hard to make sure our engineered wood floors can be enjoyed by as many people as possible, so we’re delighted that our collections have been recognised by retailers across the country. Through innovations such as Ultimtec, we’re making wood flooring an easier living proposition and connecting the beauty of real wood with a floor that’s ready for real life,’ says Scott Arundell, BerryAlloc sales director UK. Featuring on the Les Essentiels and Les Exclusifs collections, Ultimtec is a varnish with the appearance of an oil, giving the natural look of wood in a floor that’s scratch resistant and easy to look after. The technology ensures that an engineered wood floor from BerryAlloc is easy to live with. Also with the stability
of a high-quality engineered floor and simplicity of click fitting, these floors are easier to install and come with a 15-year residential wear warranty. For Les Iconics, a collection of aged looks with chevron and herringbone laying patterns, the company has created a new production technique that gives the character of aged wood but doesn’t compromise accessibility. Translating traditional techniques such as handscraping and sawing in machine production, Les Iconics brings the charm of aged oak without the expense of bespoke finishing. ‘Our engineered wood floors are made in France from wood grown in the country and that’s something unique. Locally sourced from fully regulated PEFC certified forests, it means a natural floor with a lower carbon footprint. So, when it comes to choosing a wood floor, our collections are not only wonderfully accessible, easy to live with and delightfully natural, but better for the environment too,’ says Arundell. Furniture To Go is very pleased to receive the award of Best Children’s Furniture Supplier. Awards such as this are made possible by its long-standing partnerships with two of Europe’s biggest and best furniture production factories, Meble Wojcik and Tvilum. Tvilum’s acquisition of Steens Furniture brought with it the established Steens For Kids range, amongst others, to the FTG portfolio. FTG’s partner factories are constantly working on fresh new commercial ranges throughout the furniture categories, the emphasis being on stylish designs and fantastic materials with a good, solid build quality: all at a great price point. The children’s ranges that FTG stocks, are proven winners in the category. There really is something for everybody, ranging from a classic white bunk bed with accessories to more industrial-style designs. Each range offers something unique and interesting to a child’s world, a room that they get to call their own. FTG does not only have amazing commercial furniture, it also has a vital model too. Its Portsmouth warehouse is home to more than 1,200 SKUs, on an availability level of 97% for next-day delivery. It keeps the products in stock so that its customers do not need to invest in stock. Since 1990, Quick-Step has been pushing the boundaries of innovation in laminate flooring. From the patented Uniclic system to water-resistant floors and authentic textures that feel just like the real thing, its laminate floors have been leading the way in quality and technical excellence for more than 30 years. Quick-Step is proud to have received the Best Laminate Manufacturer award from Interiors Monthly readers. The recognition is testament to the brand’s successes in evolving laminate from an affordable alternative to wood to a category in its own right, with design floors that are swift to install and maintain in every situation. Improving the sustainability of its laminate floors has always been a goal for Quick-Step, and in 2021 it became the first company that can fully recycle the HDF core of its laminate floors into new material. The patented recycling technology joins with 100% recovered wood, fully closing the loop of the HDF
used in the heart of every Quick-Step laminate floor. In 2022, Quick-Step launched its most realistic laminate flooring collection to date: Capture. A floor that looks and feels just like wood, Capture brings together over 30 years of design innovation in a ground-breaking range with lifelike design and structures never seen before in laminate flooring. With colour and structure that run all the way into joints and wood grain, Capture is indistinguishable from real wood. Thanks to HydroSeal technology, it’s 100% watertight and, of course, easy to maintain with exceptional scratch resistance. In every one of Capture’s 18 wood looks, Quick-Step has succeeded in capturing the asymmetry, roughness and subtle imperfections of nature. Quick-Step would like to thank the readers of Interiors Monthly for voting the flooring brand Best Laminate Manufacturer. Visit: www.quick-step.co.uk

Core Products Best Flatpack Furniture Supplier

Interiors Monthly August 2022
Winning the Interiors Monthly Best Flatpack Furniture Supplier award four years running is a great achievement for Core Products and one it is justifiably proud of. To achieve it has required much hard work in developing its own distinctive product offering, designed especially for easy assembly in the customer’s home. Core’s journey began in 1986 and it now has three generations involved in the day-to-day running of the business. It is this long-term commitment to the furniture industry that has contributed in large part to winning this award. Its portfolio is synonymous with pine furniture and this still accounts for a big part of its sales: Corona retains a formidable following and Core is the only supplier to incorporate real dovetail drawers. Demand for pine furniture is also rising as more price-conscious consumers see pine as affordable natural wood. The Augusta collection is ideal for today’s casual room styling, available in a choice of real wood and attractive, hardwearing and easy-to-clean manufactured board finishes. Painted furniture remains a popular consumer choice as it offers a fresh, bright option for any room. Como is a
really practical bedroom range, with soft, rounded corners and Shaker-style legs, in three colour options. Contemporary furniture is also well catered for: its Lido collection is finished in an easy-to-clean high-gloss white finish and features a collection of products ideal for modern starter homes where space is at such a premium. Modern open-plan downstairs living is now such a popular lifestyle choice, with pieces that transcend the living space to encompass dining, storage and home office. Desks and drinks cabinets are in especially high demand: a wide selection can be found in these ranges. More traditional furniture designs are covered too in Core Products’ Highland Home collections. Featuring a variety of wood and painted finishes, all the pieces are designed to be easy to build as well. Boston incorporates real wood with ash veneers in a dark lacquer finish with real metal drop handles. The design is also available in a striking midnight blue paint finish. COREtec Floors Best Rigid Floor Manufacturer

Interiors Monthly August 2022
COREtec Floors’ latest collection is The Essentials. It joins The Naturals and Megastone, adding 62 unique designs to the existing UK stocked range and bringing the number of products to 94. The collection is supported with a full suite of waterproof, exact matching trims and accessories. A new wall display unit beautifully presents The Essentials collection and complements the existing Naturals and Megastone toastrack stands. The Essentials collection consists of carefully selected designs and natural textures centred around the appeal and warmth of wood. The broad palette of styles and colour tones allows you to easily create an interior that makes you, you. Going back to the original parquet look, the collection is made up of a wide range of planks and tiles in a variety of lengths and widths. With the unique Multi Series you can create your own style from four different sizes. The layout you choose for the planks is up to you. There are designs in this new collection available with two and four bevelled sides, giving an authentic look that is almost impossible to distinguish from real parquet flooring. The collection’s natural aspect is enhanced by the texture obtained with Embossed In Register technology. Together, the design and raised texture create an authentic
whole: this not only makes the floor look like real wood, it also feels that way. Following the success of COREtec Naturals Herringbone flooring in a smaller format, The Essentials Herringbone is based on larger planks. You can follow different laying patterns to install them, depending on your own style and space. These extra-large herringbone planks also feature EIR and are perfect for larger spaces as they enhance the room’s natural energy. Tiles with classic or contemporary stone finishes or beautiful mosaic effects are another innovative aspect of this collection: the same appearance as stone flooring yet a lot warmer for bare feet. This flooring is a perfect solution for halls, bathrooms or kitchens. The new collection doesn’t just look incredible, it is technically perfect too. Thanks to Soundcore technology and an integrated cork underlay, the floors have excellent sound insulation. In addition, they are extremely stable and hardwearing, so the energetic lifestyles of children and pets won’t be an issue. The flooring is easy and quick to install. Its integrated click system does not require any glue, nails or cement. Can you install COREtec flooring on existing floors? Of course. It is suitable for any project or renovation. The brands within Interfloor’s accessories range are used so extensively by fitters across the UK that they have become trusted household names. Gripperrods, its range of carpet grippers and floor edgings, remains highly regarded amongst flooring professionals and is known for quality, consistency and delivering superior results. Stikatak, a range offering a wide selection of tools, flooring tape and adhesives, provides everything needed for a quality finish. Julian Bowen Best Customer Service (Furniture)

Interiors Monthly August 2022
For an eighth consecutive year, Julian Bowen has won the Interiors Monthly award for the industry’s Best Customer Service (Furniture). Voted for by readers, this is a significant achievement and recognises Julian Bowen as the industry’s leading customer service provider across all functions: from the obvious customerfacing front line in sales and customer support to the dedicated logistics and distribution staff, finance team, buying and quality control teams in the UK and overseas. ‘We are particularly proud of winning the award this year against a hugely challenging period in the industry, with supply-chain dislocation and the disruption following Covid lockdowns. We could not have won this award without the huge support of the whole workforce at Julian Bowen who worked closely with our customers and consumers to ensure we did everything we could to meet their expectations under unprecedented circumstances,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. Julian Bowen aims to continually improve in every aspect of its customer offering and to make the customer journey as easy and enjoyable as possible. This is evident in continued expansion and innovation across its wide product ranges; also the drive to deliver flexible delivery solutions to meet the changing needs of its diverse customers and the demands of the end customers. Alongside the growth in product there has been significant investment in the firm’s market-leading supply-chain team in the UK, Asia and Latin America to support that growth and ensure that the high level of quality for which it is renowned is not just maintained but enhanced. The firm remains totally committed to offering the best quality
and value at all of the many price points at which it supplies the marketplace. Given the fast-changing nature of the industry, the team at Julian Bowen recognises the meaningful and varied challenges that its customers face and has continued to invest significantly in staff training, IT and additional warehousing in order to provide the most efficient support. Stock control, order management and distribution are all areas of focus that have been upgraded over the past 12 months to benefit the firm’s extensive customer base and tailor individual solutions where required. Julian Bowen’s emphasis upon bespoke solutions and customer support has been a key factor in the development of its successful direct container business, which offers a onestop solution from product development through quality control, shipping and in-bound distribution and ongoing stock management support, while leveraging the firm’s significant buying power to its customers’ advantage. As across the whole business, the emphasis is on making the buying process as easy, efficient and problem-free for its customers as possible. ‘Everything we do is designed to get the best possible outcome for our customers. Everybody in our business knows that the customer comes first and we work together to continually enhance our proposition, be it a wider and better product offering, flexible distribution solutions, stock availability, bespoke development or project management. We are proud to win the Interiors Monthly award for customer service again, but our customers can rest assured that we will keep on working hard to serve them better,’ says Lenaghan. Furlong Flooring Best Customer Service (Flooring)
‘We are absolutely delighted to have been voted Best Customer Service (Flooring). Our sincere thanks go to the readers of Interiors Monthly,’ says Mike Symonds, Furlong Flooring director. ‘Our customers are at the forefront of every business decision. We have made a number of key commitments to ensure that our customers consistently get industry-leading service levels.’ A commitment to having the best products is where it starts. Furlong Flooring’s carpets are manufactured in Northern Ireland in the group’s Regency Carpets manufacturing plant. ‘We have massive confidence in the performance of our carpet products but we continue to invest, develop and monitor their performance so that we are always supplying products of the highest quality regardless of their modest pricing,’ says Symonds. Beyond carpets, Furlong Flooring is committed to offer diversity of products and this means vinyl, laminate, LVT and wood products. Smooth flooring has become an increasingly large part of the
Furlong Flooring business. All products are selected from manufacturers that can offer Furlong Flooring an exacting attention to product quality. ‘Our customers require products that will build and maintain their reputation and this what we give them,’ says Symonds. Passion for its customers is evident among everyone who works for Furlong Flooring across the UK. Every department: transport, warehouse, accounts and sales strives for excellence. With three distribution centres, Furlong Flooring has a stock capacity of 500,000sqft, more than 50 vehicles and a team of over 200 people, all focused on ensuring that its customers receive quality products at a great price, on time, every time. ‘There is so much more to add,’ says Symonds. ‘As the flooring industry becomes dominated by large conglomerates offering the same products with different names, there has never been a better time to buy from a family-owned UK business such as Furlong Flooring.’ Visit: www.furlongflooring.com

Interiors Monthly August 2022
In the 40-plus years since Metro Group conceived the concept of pooling buying power to compete against national retailers, a lot has changed in the marketplace. The group has been expanded dramatically to also assist its members to sell the best performing products in the marketplace at a profit. What has been developed is a group of independent retailers, from the smallest one-man operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is important to Metro members, who are always given the opportunity to participate in group activity that is always optional and very rarely compulsory. This allows them to use all of the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own businesses. Metro’s marketing service has a distinct advantage: it is completely bespoke. Metro understands that retailers work in differing marketplaces and locations. Having access to a whole host of marketing resources means that members have a wealth of experience and facilities custom-made to suit the independent flooring retailer’s needs. When a member moves premises or expands it is a perfect opportunity to seek support from the bespoke service offered by Metro. One such project was undertaken this summer by Midlands chain The Carpet Stop, which has
extended its premises in Derby to include a dedicated remnant department. The extension has been built to fit in with the existing building: a former pub on a large site on a busy crossroads. Signage is essential with such a high volume of passing traffic, and The Carpet Stop is using this to its best advantage. The project has been running in parallel to the building work, and existing exterior signage has been updated to match the new look. Every aspect of the project has been completed in-house by Metro’s marketing team, including the installation of the signage using access equipment for the very high upper signs. Once customers are attracted into the showroom the service doesn’t end there: another benefit of group membership is the Carpet 1st own-label display. Most retailers understand the benefit of rebranding but so often this creates a mismatch of displays and stands. Metro’s Carpet 1st display stands are completely modular, with a wall, lectern, corner and staircase unit, allowing retailers to display whatever products they choose with standard or bespoke graphic panels. The POS is designed and created in-house at the studio in the North-East of England so it’s easy to change should members wish to do so. The team travels the UK, working on-site with members on whatever project they need assistance with. Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2022
Julian Bowen has been voted Best Furniture Wholesaler by Interiors Monthly readers for the 11th consecutive year, alongside securing another award for the industry’s leading customer service. This is testament to the team’s determination to deliver the highest quality furniture at great value for money, supported by industry-leading customer service. ‘We are immensely proud of achieving these awards. We know how difficult it can be to navigate such an environment and feel that it is our job to be totally supportive, making it as easy as possible for customers to maximise their business while working with the team at Julian Bowen in an enjoyable and efficient way. We are both grateful and proud that our customers continue to show such confidence in us and we are working hard constantly to improve all aspects of the proposition that we offer,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. It is the company’s ethos to provide the highest quality at each price point. This is supported by a heavily invested supply chain incorporating an experienced in-house buying and design team, and domestic and international quality control teams who work in
close partnership with a select group of leading manufacturers. Together they have forged an impressive new product development capability, creating a platform for significant business growth. Product development is backed up by an ongoing investment programme, which has seen a significant investment in its marketing support, customer service, supply-chain management and IT infrastructure to maximise efficiency through automation, from stock feed management to ordering, distribution and customer service support. This is enhanced with a progressive staff training programme. ‘We continue to forge ahead with new product innovation, working more closely with our customers, which has resulted in much stronger business relationships, building solid growth plans for the future. Customers can see that we are continually pushing ourselves to give them an ever-wider range to choose from, with the quality and prices they value us for. I am really excited by our new product pipeline, which we look forward to showing to our customer base in the coming months,’ says Lenaghan. Visit: www.julian-bowen.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2022
‘A huge thank you to the readers of Interiors Monthly who voted Castelan as Best Warranty Provider for 2022,’ says Martin Napper, Castelan Group ceo. ‘This award is special because the votes are cast not only by our own clients but also by those we are talking to and looking to form partnerships with. It’s also very satisfying that this is the sixth year in a row that we have won this category. It shows that our consistency in delivering great products and services shines through, year after year. ‘Now, perhaps more than ever, customers are looking for value in everything they spend their money on, and protection plans are no different. Just as a customer expects an item of furniture to be of great quality and to deliver what they require, the same is true of protection plans. We have developed plans that include the highest level of cover currently available in the market – but that is only half the story. We also back this up with technology that makes it easy and convenient for the customer to claim, a head office team that understand customers’ needs and
are focused on accepting claims and not declining them, and a network of technicians that deliver quality repairs in the home time and time again. ‘Customers love what we do, as this recent Trustpilot review shows: From start to finish the service was fantastic from the first contact by phone and then by email to conclusion of repair. Your representative was friendly and extremely professional and completed his job to my entire satisfaction. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend [Doreen, 18 July 2022]. ‘As a team, we are very aware that all the customers we talk to and visit are your customers too, and so we approach them all with care and respect and treat them as our own. This is why so many trust Castelan to deliver on their behalf. I’m extremely proud of the team and the service we provide. ‘We would be delighted to talk to any retailer looking to partner with us for protection plans, care products and service provision, and are committed to rewarding your confidence in us in the months ahead.’ Visit: www.castelangroup.com

Guardsman Best Product Protection Provider (Furniture)

Interiors Monthly August 2022
‘To retain the award of Best Product Protection Provider (Furniture) for our plans and products is a huge testament to our incredible team,’ says Rob Dyer, Guardsman UK md. ‘We are so thrilled to have won it again. Thank you to each and every person who voted for us.’ Over the past 12 months, the Guardsman UK team’s top priority has continued to be the provision of industryleading protection plans and products. ‘We have worked closely with our retailers, including enhancing our plans to cover additional elements of accidental damage. We’ve improved and expanded our furniture care product range, and our premium quality care kit is proving extremely popular with retailers. And, of course, we continue to support
our retailers and their staff with our field-based team,’ says Dyer. ‘We have heavily invested in our range of professional products and training over the past 12 months and drawn on the research and development and expertise of our global partners across the USA, Europe and Australia to support customers,’ says William Taylor, Guardsman technical manager. ‘We know it’s our job to support retailers on the shopfloor, providing expertise on protection, care, cleaning, repair and restoration products and services, but we recognise there are more and more specialist finishes being used now including luxurious fibres, natural unfinished cabinet and aniline leather. Because of these specialist finishes and with fashions, trends and buyer choices ever-changing, we constantly adapt and evolve our services to deliver for customers, whilst continuing to maintain our first-visit fix rates at market-leading levels. We want our technicians to be the best, so we give them the best, which allows them to tackle the types of staining and damage that we know others simply can’t or will not do,’ says Dyer. ‘With these fix rates and overall approach, we have seen our businessto-business service attract higher demand and interest, as retailers and manufacturers alike see the value. Our technicians manage their own diaries, which allows them to utilise their training, and give themselves plenty of time to repair rather than focusing on reports and ticking boxes. Consumer buying habits are always changing, as are the type of materials used to make furniture, and we have to be able to keep up with this and do it really well. ‘Now, as we all navigate this time of uncertainty, one thing is assured: Guardsman will continue to provide the best product and protection plans for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023 by supporting its retail partners. We are a partnership, so we make it together.’ Tel: 01235 444 700

Interiors Monthly August 2022
Stroolmount has won Interior Monthly’s coveted award as the Best Product Protection Provider (Flooring) for the fourth year in a row. ‘This is a tremendous achievement for a family-run specialist protection firm that prides itself on the quality of its products and the quality of its service. I’m delighted and I want to thank all our customers who have voted for us and everyone who’s continued to choose us during this incredibly challenging time for the flooring and furniture trade,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘Since we started in 2007 we’ve stuck to a very simple formula: we’re 100% committed to supplying the very best products and accessories and giving you the same level of service as if you were our own family.’ Stroolmount has flooring protection
needs covered for retailers, manufacturers, architects and interior designers. Its Self-adhesive Felts are superior quality furniture tips, with stronger glue and thicker felt than many others. For longer term protection, the award-winning, interchangeable Quickclick Glides protect floors, reduce noise and reduce stress on furniture joints: ideal for dining chairs scraped back and forth. ‘We also have Furniglides, so you can move the heaviest furniture – even recliner sofas – without scarring your flooring. And our Move-it Pads are fitters’ best kept secret. They slide furniture around like it’s on ice. ‘With solutions like these from just 1p, it’s best to act before you scratch,’ says Finch. It’s wonderful that our customers recognise the value in our software that our continual development brings. ‘The past year has been very exciting for us: despite the challenging market conditions we have expanded our team in the UK and will continue to grow the team, with particular emphasis on customer success and onboarding. We believe in continuous development and everything we do is focused on this. In this industry if you stand still you die, so our rolling development road map is planned two years out. MasterPiece Best Software Supplier (Flooring)
MasterPiece is proud to receive the Best Software Supplier (Flooring) award. MasterPiece Cloud runs on Android, iPad, Windows and Mac, to suit both the on-site estimator and in-store operations. As well as providing measuring and planning, it supports the selling process via costing, emailed estimates, reduced wastage and application of discounts. MasterPiece is easy to pick up, via 60 minutes’ hands-on familiarisation over the phone. Extra functions can then be added, according to the retailer’s need. The Advanced Costing module provides further automation of the costing and selling process, for consistency across the team. Minimum charges are applied automatically, rules for HSL charges configured and labour charges associated with items such as stuck gripper kick in. T&Cs are automatically emailed, with
estimates and signatures taken onscreen. For manual planning, the autoplan result can be manually adjusted and the plan split into a number of cuts. The LVT estimating module covers borders and stripping; it comes with the Amtico, Karndean and Moduleo product sets. For insurance work or those wishing to give best guidance to fitters, photos can be taken on site and attached to rooms, with notes. A diary module is available, to enhance communication with fitters. There is a module for handling in-store sales where no measuring or fitting is involved; as all sales are captured, the retailer gains incremental numbering of invoices. For new-build and commercial/ contracts specialists, Windows MasterPiece allows the import of pdf floorplans, autoplanning to multiple rolls/permutations. Visit: www.masterpiece-system.com

SMG Best Business Support (Flooring)
SMG at the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show

Interiors Monthly August 2022
SMG is all about supporting the independent retailer, and being awarded Best Business Support (Flooring) by Interiors Monthly readers is a fabulous validation of that ethos. SMG has something for every retailer, large or small, long established or just starting out. Members run their business as they see fit but gain maximum advantage from the most comprehensive package of benefits available. With the group now representing more than 440 retail outlets in the UK, SMG is adding to its flooring proposition regularly and offers members the opportunity to link-sell furniture and bedding, as well as providing a comprehensive business support package that is second to none. Independent retailers are attracted to joining SMG as the group guarantees that members can retain their complete independence yet at the same time benefit from preferential discounts, rebate schemes and promotions from a comprehensive range of approved suppliers. Members can also access products from any approved supplier via SMG’s Central Purchasing Scheme,
even without a direct account. SMG supports retailers in selling branded supplier products with excellent discounts, promotions and rebates, but as well as this, retailers are offered the opportunity to de-brand as much or as little as they wish in-store. Retailers can develop their own bespoke branding featuring their store name, with artwork designed and POS supplied by the group to the retailer’s specification. One further step is that retailers can purchase contemporary unitary under the Pure Carpets and Pure Flooring brands – for which they can choose products to feature from a comprehensive portfolio of top sellers, even without a direct account with the supplier. In line with SMG’s core principles, member retailers decide how they want to run their own business with as much or as little retail support as they require. The key driver for SMG has always been to create profitable partnerships between members and approved suppliers. Both have the same goals and SMG continues to deliver more sales and greater profitability for each. Visit: www.smg-group.co.uk

Harrison Spinks Sustainability (Furniture) Editor’s Choice
118
Interiors Monthly August 2022
‘It is wonderful to be recognised for our hard work and the progress made in the field of sustainability. If there was one award we wanted to win, it was this one. Special thanks go to our sustainability team – however, being a sustainable business means that every member of the Harrison Spinks family, and all our stakeholders, play a huge part in current and future plans. Only with their input and their engagement can we truly make a difference,’ says Richard Essery, Harrison Spinks chief director of sustainability and innovation. ‘Over the past year we have commissioned and worked with sustainability consultants Project Rome to take a 360deg view of our commitments to become a more responsible manufacturer. This has led to a renewed way of thinking and a new direction in our circular manufacture strategy and stakeholder plans, internal, external and community-based. We have employed non-executive director Dr Louise Ellis-Jones to support our plans and challenge our thinking. ‘We are constantly looking at ways we can improve comfort and resilience while ensuring low impact to the environment. This includes more homegrown, natural and locally sourced fillings. Recycling and repurposing remain a strong focus for us as we look to increase output at our own recycling
facility, to help reduce the impact of the 100,000 mattresses that currently go to landfill each week in the UK. Being the most vertically integrated bed manufacturer in the world means we are always looking at ways to improve manufacturing touchpoints. We have a unique insight into the supply chain, which gives us the ability to innovate and improve in each area of production. ‘Sustainability has been at the forefront of our agenda since we first bought our own farm in 2009. Since then, we have developed spring technology that has allowed us to remove foam and glue from all our products, making them easily recyclable. We started weaving our own FR chemical-treatment free ticking, which has removed the use of 500kg of chemicals annually. We’ve opened a recycling centre and started to design all our products with their end of life in mind. We know there is always more to do, so we will continue to look for more sustainable and ethical ways of working. ‘We are proud that our luxury proposition, coupled with our fantastic heritage, strength in innovation and our farm-to-bedroom story make us unique in the furniture industry. This goes hand in hand with a culture of creativity and innovation which means we can take a leading position, not only in our category but in manufacturing as a whole.’ Visit: www.harrisonspinks.co.uk
The True Bedmakers We have been creating the ultimate in luxurious comfort since 1840, making mattresses that have been lovingly homegrown and handmade in the heart of Yorkshire. We are also the world’s most vertically integrated bedmakers. From growing our own natural fillings, to designing glue free spring systems and weaving our own fabrics, we are passionate about leading the way in luxury sustainable sleep. Associated Weavers Sustainability (Flooring) Editor’s Choice Associated Weaver’s Sedna was the first residential carpet to use Econyl regenerated nylon, a yarn made from recycled waste material such as old carpets and abandoned fishing nets collected from the bottom of the sea. The collection thus helps to save thousands of beautiful sea creatures like sea turtles, dolphins and seals that will no longer get stuck in this lifethreatening waste. It is estimated that 640,000 tons of fishing nets are lost or abandoned in our oceans each year, accounting for one-tenth of all marine litter. Each year, more than 100.000 sea animals are trapped and killed in those nets. Sedna carpet is soft, luxurious and durable. Associated Weavers is aware of the important role it can play in the journey towards a more sustainable use of

plastics. By collaborating with the fishing industry and farms and with the help of volunteer divers from Healthy Seas, ghost fishing nets are being collected worldwide. Then, along with other waste, including old carpets that otherwise end up in landfill, they are regenerated into nylon yarn through the Econyl process. This yarn can be reused time and time again while maintaining its quality. Sedna and Gaia carpets use the Associated Weavers ECO FusionBac backing, which is made from 100% recycled PET bottles and can also be recycled at the end of its life. The Indus and Dorado ranges have recently been relaunched as part of the polyester Gaia collection: using polyester provides high-quality colour fastness and a rich lustre and the carpet is bleach cleanable. Platinum return
Preparing for the gala dinner: John Richardson (left), ACG group development manager and Andy Polhill, ACG director and co-owner of St Ives, Cambridgeshire retailer Superior Finish
ACG’s summer event saw members catch up with each other and suppliers
Earlier this summer the ACG Platinum Supplier Event returned after an enforced two-year absence due to the pandemic. It was once again held at the University of Warwick’s Slate Conference Centre, a lakeside venue that offers visitors and exhibitors a relaxed and informal venue perfect for combining business with leisure. The 21 June show was supported by the group’s preferred suppliers, who along with showcasing new products, offered members cut length, full roll and on the day deals. Incentivised marketing and unitary options were on display, many tailored specifically towards ACG’s Smartchoice brand. Later in the afternoon. once the trade show had concluded, the group’s AGM was held where members were able to review the annual financial report and were encouraged to contribute regarding

the future direction of the group. In the evening the conference centre was transformed for the gala dinner. This year there was a traditional street party theme in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Dinner was followed by music and dancing. A photo booth furnished with comedy props was a particular hit with suppliers and members. ‘After the restrictions of the past few years, the show was a fantastic opportunity for members to socialise with friends and associates within the trade that they haven’t seen for a while. There is a lot of positivity surrounding the group’s activities, which has created a good vibe across the membership,’ says Jon Richardson, ACG group development manager. ‘It was also clear from the feedback at the show that the Smartchoice brand
is second to none and has been a great success in protecting its members and their margins from high street, online and man-in-a-van price comparisons. ACG membership offers independent retailers preferential buying prices, complemented with more than 20 rebate schemes that are all paid directly from suppliers to members. ‘The group respects retailers’ independence completely. As a member, there is no change in the way you currently place orders with suppliers and your trading relationships remain the same. ACG’s philosophy is simple: if you place your business with the main industry suppliers, you should recover your subscription cost, earn additional rebates and generate more margin for your business on an annual basis,’ says Richardson. When offered something that sounds too good to be true, you would be right to ask –
WHERE’S THE
CATCH? 1
Question
Answer
We don’t want to lose our independence as we pride ourselves on being a family run business?
ACG is non-intrusive and does not dictate in any way how you run your business. We purposely shy away from corporate policies in order to retain an approachable and friendly demeanor. The majority of our members are in fact, independently run family stores.
2
Question
Answer
Do I have to order my products through the group?
No. You continue to place orders directly with suppliers and your relationship with them remains unchanged. You do not have to alter any of your current inhouse routines.
3
Question
Answer
Does ACG pay the annual turnover rebates?
The group is very transparent regarding rebates earned by its members. Therefore, rather than accumulate these in house and then redistribute them to member stores, ACG insists that rebates are paid by the supplier direct to the member.
4
Question
Answer
Do I have to change my showroom to group branded products?
ACG has its own very successful Smart Choice brand and unitary, but it is not a condition that members have to embrace it. However, it is becoming more and more relevant, as it allows members to maximise margin whilst protecting their sale against the annoyance of high street, online and man in a van price comparison.
5
Question
Answer
What’s in it for you?
ACG is run solely for the benefit of its members and not for profit, unlike other groups. By continuing to strengthen the membership we reaffirm our partnership commitment with the industries major suppliers, cementing our trading relationships.
“Where’s the catch you ask?” I can honestly say there isn’t one! To summarise, a retailer should never be worse off by becoming a member of the Associated Carpet Group. The group provides many initiatives and benefits from which the member selects the ones that suit their business best. ACG is confident that you will receive the best returns for your business against your subscription investment. Jon Richardson Group Development Manager Mobile: 07873 223144 Email: jon@acgcarpets.com
