EDITOR’S COMMENT

Snakes and ladders Shareholders in Victoria would have been forgiven for thinking they were playing the board game recently If you look at a graph of Victoria’s share price since Geoff Wilding took over, nothing really happens for the first two and a bit years until Whitestone Weavers becomes the third acquisition. The market begins to notice when Interfloor is bought in September 2015, and it begins to climb and climb. Fast-forward to 2017 and the growth shows no sign of stopping, leaping when it moves into ceramic tiles. With some bumps in the road it continues its upward path into 2018, peaking at 890p in May. It drops a little over the next months and then gets to September, when suddenly the price is 838p, then 672p. Worse is to come: after a brief rally to 730p it is time for the previously mentioned snakes to really appear and its all the way down to 604p. Then comes the attempt to refinance its £432m debt, which is pulled, and a host of short-selling. Share price? 350p. Since then there has been more ladders and it has recovered to 480p. What a journey for shareholders. Now the group says, that although its has scope for more borrowing and importantly stresses it is continuing to look for acquisitions, debt has reached a level which is beyond where management are really comfortable with and its time to reduce it. This will be achieved by continuing with its strategy, shareholders are told. At more than £430m you would think it was time to reduce it. After all to use a measure preferred by bank managers, Victoria made a pre-tax profit of £4.6m in the past half-year. Carpetright’s latest update told shareholders precious little: like-for-like sales were down, but weren’t as bad as they had been. Given many consumers were under the impression it was going about to go bust during the CVA process, that is hardly a surprise. Not until 11 December will the full horror of the ‘transitional’ year be now revealed. On behalf of everyone at Interiors Monthly may I wish you a Happy Christmas and a prosperous winter sale.

Victoria: now we’ll cut £340m debt after plan to refinance backfires Flooring group Victoria is to focus on reducing its huge debts while Geoff Wilding has insisted that its recent stock market turmoil, which saw it abandon plans to refinance the debt and a plunge in its share price in the face of strong short-selling, has not distracted management. The group’s executive chairman said following the acquisition of Ceramica Saloni in August, net debt was £342.7m at the end of the half-year on 29 September. This is 3.09 times its adjusted EBITDA. ‘The group has significant headroom in its covenants at this level, but the board sees it as an internal ceiling and is therefore emphasising paying down debt at this time. ‘Victoria has consistently demonstrated over the last five years that, while there is seasonality in its net debt (working capital levels generally peak in September due to building stock levels for the pre-Christmas rush), overall cash generation is aligned to annual earnings. Manufacturers structured like Victoria can generate large amounts of cash, with the group generating pre-tax operating cash flow of between 95% and 100% of underlying EBITDA over the last three years. ‘I, the board and management are confident in the outlook for the group, and believe that Victoria is on track to meet its objectives for the current financial year. Material market share gains in the UK will secure long-term earnings growth. The group's Australian businesses are expected to return to The group says it will not be cutting prices

growth next year as a result of actions being taken today. In Europe, we are achieving greater than expected operational synergies in our Spanish businesses, which will add to earnings in FY 2020, together with strong performance from our Italian business, which is producing record profits. ‘We will continue to seek and review high-quality companies to ensure there are suitable acquisition opportunities when the time is right to execute them. ‘I am acutely aware that Victoria's share price is not where I believe it should be given our current trading and prospects. As one of the largest shareholders, you can be assured that I, and the other directors and management, are focused on building the confidence of investors and delivering the financial results expected of Victoria. The events of the last couple of months have not distracted management from delivering and for that reason I am highly confident of Victoria's continued long-term success.’ The group had to abandon plans for a €450m bond after the interest rate rose from 4.25% to 5.75%. In five days the share price fell by a third; it has since recovered about half of the fall. Sales in the six months to 29 September rose by 44% to £273.4m. Underlying EBITDA margin rose from 13% to 16.6% while operating profit rose 5% to £13.6m. It said it had gained UK carpet market share by introducing lower cost products and it had no plans to cut prices.

Ikea sees sales edge closer to £2bn but jobs will go A surge in online sales and two more branches saw Ikea approach £2bn of sales in the UK. But it is to cut 350 jobs. Ikea saw sales rise 5.9% to £1.96bn in the year to 31 August. The group said 59.8million visitors visited its stores, helped by the opening of Exeter and Sheffield. Visits to its website rose 13.4% to 199.3million. Online sales rose 14.4% and made up £303m of sales. ‘FY18 has been a positive year for IKEA in the UK,’ said Javier Quinones, Ikea UK country retail manager. ‘In a tough economic environment, our homes provide a sanctuary and we know that consumers continue to update them with soft furnishings, textiles and decorations, resulting in an increase of 9% in home decoration. Two years ago, we refurbished the living room department in all stores and we are still seeing strong growth off the back of this, with living room seating up 8% on last year. ‘We know that the role of the store is changing. People want to shop in a number of different ways and count on brands to offer them services that reflect the way they live.’ The jobs will go in the UK and Republic of Ireland over the following two years as part of a global transformation

plan that will see 7,500 positions lost in total. The group said the plan consists of simplifying its operations and stepping up investments in new and current stores and fulfilment centres, developing city centre formats such as its Tottenham Court Road, London planning studio, and focusing on online.

Sales up, growth down Upholstery and flooring chain ScS has seen sales growth at its core stores slip back in the past month, while its House of Fraser concessions continue to suffer. ‘The core ScS business has continued to perform well, with like-for-like order intake growth of 3.5% for the 16 weeks to 17 November 2018. Two year like-for-like order intake has grown 7.1%,’ says Alan Smith, ScS chairman. However, this compares with a rise of 4.5% in the 12 weeks to 20 October.

During the 16 week period, the concessions accounted for just 2.9% of the group’s order intake and have seen a decline in like-for-like orders of 53.4%. The concessions are due to close by the end of January. ‘Strong core ScS performance has offset declining orders in the House of Fraser concessions, resulting in the group, as a whole, trading in line with the prior year. Two year like-for-like order intake has grown 2.6%,’ adds Smith.

Walsh insists plan is working Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo has insisted that the restructuring of the group is producing benefits. ‘This is a transitional year for Carpetright as we work through our restructuring plan. ‘I am pleased to report that this activity is firmly on track and has started to yield benefits as we create a right-sized and well-located portfolio of stores on

sustainable rents. We also continue to modernise our existing estate as well as investing in our digital capability,’ Walsh says. In the six months to 27 October, 65 UK stores and two European branches were closed, with six more closures planned by the end of this year. Carpetright is due to report its half-year results on 11 December.

Lincolnshire furniture and flooring independent Swannacks is to close after 143 years, with the great-grandson of the store’s founder retiring. Richard Swannack has sold the Retford building and is holding a closing down sale. ‘I’m a pensioner now and I have just entered into my 50th year in the furniture trade, so I see this as the time for me to retire,’ he says. ‘I have no idea what I will be doing with my retirement, but I am just happy that I will no longer have to work six days a week. I only have a one week-long holiday at Easter because if I'm not here then the shop does not open. ‘Regulars have said that they are very sorry to see us closing, but that it is maybe time I put my feet up for once. ‘I have had lovely cards and calls come in from people. Some of our customers we have had for a very long time, some are even second or third generation. ‘Up until 1950, my family lived here – I am the only member of the family not to live here. My father was born here and my grandfather too.’

Eve Sleep abandons Europe expansion plans Mattress in a box retailer Eve Sleep is to roll back its ambitions while tapping investors for £15m. Since joining in September, Eve’s ceo James Sturrock has been reviewing performance. He says the company will abandon its plans to expand across Europe and concentrate on the UK, Republic of Ireland and France. It plans to cut its marketing spend, with a new marketing boss concentrating

on ‘building a strategy that optimises marketing effectiveness’. It said it wants to widen its product offer, with non-mattress sales making up 17% of sales, and sell more to existing customers. The company wants to raise £15m from shareholders to fund the new strategy ‘though to profitability’. Eve raised £35m when it floated on the stockmarket in May 2017, but has just £7m left.

‘This investment will allow increased focus on website customer experience, enhancing the delivery proposition and significantly developing the company's product range. ‘The company has already received material levels of support for the planned fundraise from certain existing shareholders at a price that is significantly higher than the prevailing share price,’ it said.

Sealy beds are handmade in the heart of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. When you create something in such beautiful surroundings, it’s a constant reminder that you want things to stay that way. In the UK, we currently produce over 200 million tonnes of rubbish each year. This includes everything from commercial and industrial to household waste but only a percentage of this is recovered – the rest is sent to landfill. The impact in dumping everything into landfill areas is evident; air pollution, ground water pollution, soil and land pollution, landfill fires, financial costs and of course, health implications. So what does ‘Zero to Landfill’ actually mean? The ultimate aim of this philosophy is to prevent any waste material produced within an organisation going to landfill, which in turn offers a more sustainable route to resourcing for future generations. At Sealy, we have been making positive steps to change that over the past decade. Ten years ago only 15% of the waste produced in the production of our beds was either recycled or sent to energy recovery. Today, we are Zero to Landfill from site. Our goal is to make our nation ‘Deeper Sleepers.’ We believe that, along with our beds containing state of the art technology and unsurpassed comfort, the knowledge that your bed has been manufactured under a Zero to Landfill policy will help you rest a little easier.

The day before Christmas A message from a familiar figure ‘Twas the day before Christmas and all round the trade The workers were frantic and tempers were frayed. In her shop on the High Street the manager looked pale: Would everything be ready for the Boxing Day sale? The Christmassy goods had all been packed away So that bargains and discounts could be on display. But time was against them, the deadline was near. There’s no time to stop in a retailer’s year. She looked round her shopfloor, still so much to do. Now one of her staff had gone down with the flu. Another with back pain, her PA was ill, The rest wanted her to show them some goodwill. But she made them continue until all was done, And then sent them home to join in the fun, Leaving her all alone to lock up for the night. But she’d have one last look before dowsing the light.

22

Interiors Monthly December 2018

She walked round the roomsets and plumped every seat, She moved every ticket to make things look neat. She tweaked and adjusted, she couldn’t have done more, Then out went the lights and she opened the door. But just at that moment she heard a faint sound A shower of soot falling onto the ground. ‘That’s not a real fireplace, this must be a trick!’ But it wasn’t, she clearly heard boots scraping brick. First came his boots, then his bum, then his back. Then his head. He was holding a limp, empty sack. He fell out on the hearth by a white leather suite. ‘Don’t you get that dirty!’ she said, ‘Wipe your feet!’ Father Christmas stood up and brushed himself down. ‘What are you doing here?’ she asked with a frown. ‘Shouldn’t you be engaged in your once-a-year flight? ‘Taking presents to children before it gets light?’ ‘There’s still time for that,’ Santa said with a smile ‘But I’m here to see you and to talk for a while.

‘That question’s for you, what are you doing here? Is this what’s important at this time of year?’ She looked all around, it was not Christmas Day But all hints of Christmas had been taken away On her instructions: was there really a need? It was all about money, and profits and greed! She’d driven her team and they’d given their best, But with just one day off, would they really find rest? The message of Christmas is peace on the earth, The angels announcing our Saviour’s birth. And as for dear Santa, he shows us the way, But he wasn’t there on the first Christmas Day. Let’s not be mistaken, let’s take time to ponder, The meaning of Christmas, eternal wonder. Then a jingle of bells could be heard far away, And Santa climbed back through the dummy display. But she heard him exclaim, that rotund old male, Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good sale!

Since 1979, the key aim for Metro Group has been the ability to pool buying power to compete against the national chains that can dominate the marketplace. What has been developed is a group of independent retailers, from the smallest one-man operation to multiple-outlet businesses, sharing both buying and comprehensive marketing resources. Retaining independence is important to members: they are always given the opportunity to participate in group activity and it is always optional. This allows them to use all of the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control. Pictured is signwork carried out by the group for Meadow Vale Carpets, Duffield. Louis de Poortere’s Antiquarian collection of rugs is inspired by the company’s heritage and draws on original designs from its archive. FG1 from Lionvest Trading is the market leader in flooring grade plywood, far exceeding BS 8203:2017. FG1 is a highly stable Indonesian mixed hardwood (Meranti/Mersawa) having 1.3mm top/reverse veneers (before sanding): the thickest available in the UK. The market is flooded with plywood imported from the Far East, some with as little as 0.15mm-0.3mm maximum top/ reverse veneers, causing serious issues with delaminating when cut and face veneers failing – which is why thicker face veneers are vital when bonding to plywood. Green minded Sealy has a trio of environmental initiatives A new generation of environmentally conscious consumers are demanding more than ever before from the companies they purchase products from. Sealy UK has developed three initiatives that make purchasing a mattress more environmentally friendly. One of the first steps for Sealy in its aim towards becoming a more environmentally conscious supplier is being awarded Carbon Neutral status. The accreditation is a result of Sealy balancing out its carbon emissions by funding an equivalent amount of carbon savings elsewhere. The move has seen

the company become a Carbon Neutral organisation in both production and distribution, and will form a key part of its commitment to sustainability. Sealy has also pledged to minimise any adverse environmental effects as a result of its production and distribution with a new zero to landfill policy. When it comes to Sealy’s environmental footprint, the brand continually assesses the environmental impact of its operations. Through minimising the use of materials, resources and energy, Sealy seeks to reduce wastage to the lowest practical level,

whilst also pursuing a policy of zero to landfill. Products are now being designed in such a way as to minimise their environmental effects in production, usage and disposal. Consideration is also being given to the environmental effects of raw material sourcing, with Sealy aiming to use materials and components that are renewable and recyclable wherever possible. The company’s ‘ingredients’ list is designed to make it more transparent with its products. In a scheme that takes its inspiration from food labelling, the ingredients list aims to cater to individuals who demand quality and ethically produced products. With details available to access online, consumers and suppliers alike can educate themselves on the components that go into the production of Sealy’s beds and mattresses. ‘At a time when consumers are demanding more than ever before from the products they are purchasing, it’s never been more important for suppliers to step up and review their own practices, to see if there is more they can be doing to help the environment and to play their part in being more sustainable and eco-friendly,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy sales and marketing director. Our in-house team have designed and developed the new products to ensure they bring something new and exciting to our catalogue,’ says James Hudson, Gallery sales and business development director. The SS19 furniture features a variety of looks, including two collections with a mid-century feel: Barcelona features white marble teamed with acacia wood, and Madrid is crafted from European oak. ‘Following the successful launch of our British-made sofa beds in the autumn, we are introducing sofa versions, along with chairs, corner units and footstools,’ says Hudson. ‘The new products can be used with the sofa beds for a coordinated look, or they can be used as stand-alone living room upholstery. New pieces include a

Richmond armchair and lovebed, and Norwood corner unit, armchair and footstool, along with our new Howard range and some personality chairs. We are also introducing a British-made occasional sleeper sofa bed to add a budget model to our catalogue, in response to our customers’ needs. All will be made at our manufacturing unit in Wiltshire.’ New mirrors and wall art are also being added to the catalogue, along with Gallery’s latest textile brand Lagom. This features bright contrasting colours in a

variety of geometric patterns, with added embellishments including embroidery and end tassels. A selection of the new products will be exhibited at Top Drawer and Spring Fair, and the full collection launch will be at the January Furniture Show, where Gallery has its largest stand yet. At 912sqm, the double-decker stand offers space to showcase the SS19 collection as well as a selection of products from its current catalogue. Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Left to right: Michael Pourvakil; Hadi Maktabi; Maktabi bought this masterpiece at Domotex 2018

The place to be Three retailers and an exhibitor explain why they will be at Domotex Michael Pourvakil is the president and owner of Weavers Art, a Toronto company that sells hand-knotted rugs made from natural materials and crafted in a range of modern and traditional designs. Weavers Art provided rugs for the green room at the last two Toronto International Film Festivals. ‘We are a high-end showroom for rugs in Toronto, and have been serving the architecture and interior design community for 25 years,’ says Pourvakil. ‘For my company, Domotex is the most important trade show for rugs and floorcoverings – an event I simply cannot afford to miss.’ Pourvakil says he is noticing a trend towards new designs, textures and colours. For a number of years, his buyers have been carefully seeking out rugs in a diverse range of silver and grey tones. ‘They are still looking for these sorts of colour tones, but with added accents in gold and purple.’ Pressed to name a personal favourite design, he notes that he has many but if he had to narrow it down, it would be Marble By Rachel, one of 10 designs created by a group of graduates of Toronto’s OCAD University in partnership with Weavers Art. Marble By Rachel is made from premium Chinese silk and hand-spun Tibetan wool. ‘It is organic to the touch and has a flowing and natural palette that is very elegant.’ James Ffrench is a director at New York’s Beauvais Carpets, where he is in charge

of antique rugs. Beauvais is a gallery that specialises in antique Oriental and European carpets and tapestries as well as modern hand-tufted and custom rugs. ‘I attend Domotex because it gives me a complete overview of current trends and developments in contemporary rug design,’ Ffrench says. He uses the show to research his own purchasing decisions, and every year he heads to Hannover fully expecting to make one or two exciting new discoveries. He also values Domotex as a place to meet up with old friends and make new contacts in the flooring business. In terms of general trends, Ffrench points to a sustained move towards simple and minimalistic designs. ‘The biggest change in the market at the moment, I think, is a growing level of interest in special textures,’ he says. As regards projects, Ffrench currently has a hand in fitting out several high-end residential buildings around the world. These include a large country house in the UK, a beachfront property on an island in Massachusetts, and a residence in Kuwait. He doesn’t have a favourite design. ‘If you’re passionate about flooring, you don’t have favourites,’ he says. Instead, he sees ‘beauty and artistic value in a wide range of pieces,’ be they high value antiques or innovative new creations. Hadi Maktabi is the ceo and owner of the eponymous high-end firm that started out as a traditional family business in

Beirut in 1911 and is now an exquisitely curated art gallery for Oriental carpets, both antique and contemporary. Maktabi attends Domotex regularly, seeing it as the leading trade show for carpets and floor coverings and an absolute must for suppliers and producers from all corners of the globe. It is also an opportunity ‘to see the latest developments in rug design’ and ‘meet producers from countries that we typically don’t travel to.’ In addition, the show is a chance to ‘view and compare various new product lines and carpet types, all under the one roof.’ Maktabi says he is noticing new upcycling strategies in hand-made rugs, such as over-dyeing old rugs – a design trend which, in his view, works only if the producers have a keen intuitive sense for innovative interiors and interior styling. He has also noticed a ‘strong upsurge in interest in modern designer carpets from Nepal and India.’  James Ffrench

Maktabi is currently providing rugs – mostly in contemporary designs – for homes, hotels and corporate head office buildings around the world. He also provides advice to aficionados seeking to expand their collections. His current favourite creation is a ‘fabulous antique Persian Kerman’ acquired at Domotex 2018. The design features a royal coat of arms, complete with dragon, lions, sword and sun. ‘It is a rare masterpiece that has survived in perfect condition,’ he says. Ali Ipektchi is the owner of Ipek, a Hamburg wholesaler of Persian rugs, and the chairman of the European CarpetImporters Association. Ipek will again be exhibiting at Domotex. ‘Domotex is the world’s leading trade show for floorcoverings. If you want to be a player in the markets of Germany, Europe and the world, you need a presence at Domotex.’ He values the event for its international scope and reach and hence its ability to position flooring firms as world-class providers. ‘At Domotex, I can catch up with all my key customers in person and showcase my products and innovations, within the space of four days.’ For Ipektchi, it is a key marketplace for disseminating and gathering information Ali Ipektchi

because it attracts a cross-section of the global market. ‘I can find answers to questions like: What are the latest trends? What’s on offer internationally, and what are people buying? What are others doing? What is the retail side of the market looking like? That is a big help when it comes to preparing for the year ahead.’ Louis de Poortere will bring its entire 2019 rug collection to Domotex. Mad Men and Antiquarian will see new designs alongside the launch of Uyuni, which uses thicker yarns in cotton chenille and wool to give a multi-layer texture. The style will be available in two qualities. The Belgian manufacturer will also be previewing the Haute Couture XL collection, in a new width and with an integrated felt backing. ‘This will be the first time we’ve shown our complete collection for 2019, so Domotex is going to provide an excellent chance for visitors to see just how we offer an exceptional choice of quality products. With new designs in two of our mainstay collections, and the Uyuni quality, we’ve bolstered our core rug offer, and it will be the official launch of our Original Wilton Rugs programme,’ says Alan Russell, Louis de Poortere sales director UK. The programme combines two fields of expertise for Louis de Poortere: woven wool wall-to-wall products and flatweave rugs. The concept makes the 100% wool cut-pile of Richelieu Velours and President, as well as the 14 different patterns of jacquard woven wool-rich Haute Couture, available in 10 stock rug sizes with a choice of three hand-finished edgings. Granorte’s stand will carry visitors through corridors of discovery as if entering inside a cork tree. Visitors will be able to explore Granorte’s ranges of cork flooring and surfaces, including the TRENDcollection, a new launch aimed at delivering cork to a new audience through budget-driven alternatives to the

manufacturer’s high-end products. Including a new website, brand identity and packaging concept, TRENDcollection delivers cork’s quiet and comfortable, water-resistant, wear-resistant and ecological benefits in a range of economical and easy to install floors. The range includes SOLIDtrend, 10 wood and stone designs in a floating, rigid core construction that features a cork back and 0.5mm wear layer. VINYLtrend features Granorte’s proprietary vinyl top layer on an HDF floating core in 34 designs. DESIGNtrend offers direct digital print onto a cork top layer in 16 designs, while NATURtrend is cork floating floors and glue-down tiles in 12 designs across natural and colour finishes. ‘We’re hugely excited about the launch of TRENDcollection as it puts cork’s firm and clear benefits to a new audience of homeowners and designers. It’s a notable development for cork flooring and one that is sure to capitalise on the growing demand for natural, sustainable interior finishes,’ says Paulo Rocha, Granorte product and R&D manager. Granorte is also using Domotex as the platform for the Granorte Colour Palette. Representing fire, earth, wind and water through 28 colours, Granorte Colour Palette forms the base of all colours in the Delivering Nature brand offer. It will see Naturals reorganised into 28 decors, new tones introduced in Decodalle, Recolour significantly updated in all 28 colours – and the introduction of a glue-down version – and additions to Vita Classic and Vita Décor. Lano will be refreshing colour banks across Startwist and Heathertwist, introducing 10 new colours to each collection. Startwist will be offered in 14 colours and Heathertwist in 15. The company will also update its SmartStrand collection. Visit: www.domotex.de

Escape Reality: Second nature hidden layer by Field

Towards Utopia Five key trends have been identified for 2019/2020

modern utopia: those who seek a temporary time-out from the Internet to reconnect with nature and defy the elements (Go Off-grid), while others escape from the real world into a virtual world (Escape Reality). Some withdraw and find security in pure, minimalist rooms (Seek Sanctuary). Embrace Indulgence offers a nostalgic answer to

uncertain times and surrounds us with beauty and luxury. And the unconditional hedonistic desire for play (Pursue Play) is probably hidden in everyone. More information on the trends, including key colours, is available in the Trends Book and will be on display in Hall 3 of the January show. Heimtextil’s annual trends forecast describes a world in which we live according to new standards. We try to escape complex lifestyles and have a desire for deeper relationships, spiritual confirmation and greater meaning. ‘We live in an era of uncertainty and mistrust in the established order. As a reaction, we try to live a meaningful, conscious life based on positive relationships. We take responsibility for our lives and look for ways of life that fulfil our value system in search of a new utopia – a society that aims at promoting the well-being of all its citizens,’ says Caroline Till, FranklinTill Studio co-founder, who developed the findings with Anne Marie Commandeur, Stijlinstituut Amsterdam director and Anja Bisgaard Gaede, Spott Trends & Business ceo. ‘The search for new lifestyles in which mindfulness and sustainability play an important role will be the challenge of the coming decades.’ The trends for 2019/2020 have been combined under the title of Toward Utopia which shows the individual routes we can take on the way to finding a

Seek Sanctuary: Perfettamente-imperfetto by Dimore Studio

PREVIEW Seek Sanctuary In the midst of our intense, hyperconnected everyday life, more and more people are looking for ways to cut off all connections – for utopian havens of peace amidst all the noise. They retreat to urban oases where they can switch off to find relaxation, a new perspective and clarity. However, this essentialism does not mean that we have to categorically reject products. Rather, is it about the targeted search for and appreciation of design pieces and concepts that are simple, beautiful, functional and high quality. The combination of a minimalist colour palette with carefully selected structural details, curvy shapes and upholstery gives rise to comfort and warmth.

A Place by Thisispaper

Escape Reality A new utopia can be rooted in both the digital and the real. The potential of virtual and extended reality blurs the boundaries between fantasy and reality. We are working on a technology that enables deeper and more lasting experiences in daily life. Shimmering, iridescent surfaces have a transformative and optimistic quality, are transformed by movement and create a fleeting, intangible form of motion. Mother-of-pearl effects and high gloss create a unique dynamic in designs that seem to achieve the impossible by appearing fluid and in suspension as a solid form that could dissolve at any time. Ethereal combinations of pastel shades create a surrealistic, hyper-real mood.

High-quality materials and rich colours, a modernist style and solid craftsmanship combine to form a utopian vision of the future of luxury. In a modern age marked by uncertainty, we look back through rose-tinted glasses to earlier epochs, remember the comfort of the old days, long for security and surround ourselves with a calm, inviting aesthetic. Cleverly combined, honest materials, creatively implemented ideas and simple opulence form a new kind of comfort and give rise to intimacy and a sense of tangibleness.

Pursue Play In an era of uncertainty, political instability and environmental problems, we satisfy our need for optimism and creativity with play. Playing helps us to find meaning in the midst of chaos and turbulent times. Designers thus playfully focus on uninhibited, tactile interactions and experiments. Daring, cheeky product, room and fashion designs are loosened up with a touch of humour. Shapes and colour palettes take on a surrealistic note and the concept of L’art pour l’art once again commands attention. The use of rich primary colours is playful and naive, while the combination of high-gloss and matt textures creates a palatable visual appeal. Abstract forms, bold play with patterns and exuberant textures challenge us to be imaginative and invent our own stories.

with nature – and not against it. It is about cross-border experiences in remote locations, supported by high-tech survival equipment. The combination of hard-wearing technical aspects of outdoor textiles and

BEing there

Clockwise from top left: Baker Furniture, DTP, Hartman, Tetrad, Passe Partout and MiaZia were among the 268 exhibitors (an increase of 10) from 24 countries – including 76 new exhibitors

Brussels saw a better than expected performance ‘Exhibitors and visitors alike were unanimous in their praise of this year’s Brussels Furniture Fair: this was a brilliant edition that once again saw the fair upgraded. There were stunning stands and appealing collections, and a pleasing level of buying from both the international trade and the Belgian trade,’ says Lieven Van den Heede, Brussels Furniture Fair director. ‘It was also important that visitors did actually turn up, as prior to the fair there was some unease about this. Total visitor numbers did fall slightly. It is no surprise that this was chiefly apparent among Belgian visitors, as these comprise the largest number of visitors. There is probably no need for us to outline the reasons for this: following truly dreadful sales figures in the shops since early spring, it should come as no surprise that a number of shops have chosen not to

80

Interiors Monthly December 2018

attend. Over the past year a number of businesses have also closed. ‘However, with the two most important foreign visitor groups – the Netherlands and France – we actually saw an increase. We welcomed 0.7% more visitors from France. Visitor numbers from our northern neighbour rose by no less than 6% and we went over the threshold of 5,000 visitors. The Netherlands is coming ever closer to representing 30% of all visitors. Is it merely a matter of time before they overtake the number of Belgians? ‘We also received 113 fewer visitors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, a drop of 8.3%. The German market in particular is in a state of flux and is extremely volatile. The combination of buyers who are changing group and fewer buyers in the shops probably meant that a visit to Brussels Furniture

Fair was not top of their to-do list. Visitors from the United Kingdom and Ireland remained stable. Moreover, the trade fair has again become more international, this year attracting visitors from 40 different countries. ‘We were told by a number of exhibitors with whom we were able to speak during the fair that buying from both Belgian and foreign visitors was better than had been expected or feared prior to the start of the fair. In general, the closing balance of this year’s fair was positive. It would seem that the furniture trade believes that the way to get out of this impasse is to renew its offering.’ Judging the annual Balthazar awards at the Brussels Furniture Fair proved tougher than normal this year, with the jury deliberating for a long time: the prize for best international product was a particularly close call. 

THE WINNERS WERE: Best of Belgium: Reset by Magnitude by LS Bedding, designed by Alain Berteau. ‘This hybrid 24/7 design concept anticipates the trend towards open interior design and the new living culture. The bed becomes a micro world in the space that is designed both to sleep in and to live in,' said the judges. Highly commended were Mintjens Furniture with Caress and the Wire Lounger by Joli, designed by Mathias de Ferm. Innovation: Resleep by Velda. ‘A revolutionary and marketable cradle-to-cradle box spring concept which revolves around recycling. Neither PU foam nor glue is used, including for the pocket springs. Thus the individual parts can be quickly and simply recycled.’ Recor Originals with Soul and Otium Care with Daan were highly commended.

LS Bedding won the Best of Belgium award

Best International: Glide by Kluskens, designed by Tiel Design Studio. ‘The V-shaped profile on the underside of this tabletop led to an inventive redesign of its support. The table’s length feels highly contemporary whilst its width is a nod to old-fashioned cosiness.’ Highly commended were Design Studio Zürich with Edge and Egoitaliano with Honey. Love At First Sight: Lucie by Moome, designed by Tessa Lauwaert. ‘An attractive, feminine design sofa with unusual details such as idiosyncratic feet and the uniquely upholstered curve above them. Sleek and slim on the outside, but soft and nonchalant on the inside.’ Passe Partout with Thor and Mathy by Bols with Discovery were highly commended. Visit: www.furniturefairbrussels.be
