EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Busy, busy, busy January is a month very much associated with new products, but this time major corporate moves were just as active

Interiors monthly

February 2015

With January being packed with exhibitions, the month sees more products being introduced to the market than any other. But this January was different as it also saw more major corporate deals than the final day of the football transfer window (as I type). By far the largest, at £790m, was Mohawk’s agreed purchase of IVC. The group was already the world’s largest flooring company thanks to its US operations, and the deal combines IVC’s LVT, laminate and vinyl brands with Quick-Step to become Europe’s largest flooring producer. Remarkably the sale is the second bigmoney deal by IVC’s founder Filip Balcaen, who sold Balta, the family company, in a €600m deal in 2004. While no one can deny that £790m is a

very large sum of money, to put it into context it represents 14 months of profits for Mohawk – and just six days for Apple. Victoria Carpets completed its third acquisition since Geoff Wilding took control, with a deal to buy Whitestone Weavers. This time payment is much more spread out than the previous Westex and Abingdon takeovers. Does this indicate a change of mood from Barclays (which is providing the money and could soon be the country’s largest carpet producer)? And, of course, the furniture sector couldn’t be left out, with G Plan, Parker Knoll and Duresta owner SBI changing hands and Moooi’s founders buying out B&B Italia. The SBI deal sees the group’s management take partial ownership (although figures, percentages and involvement aren’t being discussed) so expect those running the group to be there for the longer term. We’ve got lots of the previously mentioned product launches in this issue and more to come next month. The change in mood from exhibitors at the January Furniture Show (no ‘It’s smaller than before’ complaints) was a breath of fresh air and I congratulate the JFS team for such a good debut show.

Balcaen agrees to sell IVC to Mohawk for £790m Quick-Step parent company Mohawk is to become the largest flooring manufacturer in Europe after agreeing to buy IVC Group, the parent of Balterio, Leoline, Avenue, ITEC and Moduleo. Filip Balcaen, IVC’s founder and primary shareholder, has agreed to sell the group for about £790m. Mohawk expects to make profits from the deal within a year. It says the sale should be completed by the end of this quarter, depending on EU and US regulatory approval – something that is likely to be approved, given the global production of flooring. The deal is a mixture of cash and shares. For Balcaen it is the second major flooring sale after selling Balta – excluding IVC, which he founded in 1997 – to investment firm Doughty Hanson in 2004 in a deal that valued the company at €600m (£452m). He will become a Mohawk director while Jan Vergote will stay as IVC ceo. ‘There are many potential synergies between IVC and Mohawk in both Europe and the US. Our greatest opportunities are in LVT, which has increased globally around 18% in the past year. IVC is the fastest growing manufacturer of LVT in Europe, and its manufacturing expertise will help start up our new Belgian LVT factory faster. [Production at the €45m Wielsbeke plant began in December.] This new plant will allow IVC to further expand its European sales,’ says Jeff Lorberbaum, Mohawk executive chairman. In the US, LVT represents about 5% of the total flooring

Another buy for Victoria Victoria Carpets’ acquisition spree has continued with it agreeing to pay £5.7m upfront for Whitestone Weavers. A further £2.27m will be paid on 31 March, followed by £1.748m in April 2016 and £2.536m in January 2018. An additional £1.5m could be paid over the three years if profit targets are met. The deal covers Whitestone Weavers, Carpet Line Direct, Gaskell Mackay Carpets, View Logistics and Thomas Witter Carpets. Funding for the deal is being provided by Barclays. Whitestone made a pre-tax profit of £1.7m from sales of £33.9m in the year to 30 June 2014. Victoria previously bought Westex and Abingdon.

market, and sales are projected to increase more than 15% annually until 2020. ‘Our new LVT plant in Dalton will be one of the world’s largest, most efficient production lines with leading technology and will position us to meet the rapidly growing US market,’ says Lorberbaum. ‘IVC Group and Mohawk Group are confident that they, as reliable partners, can look forward to an exciting future. The acquisition is an opportunity to further develop IVC within the Mohawk Group in the segments of vinyl, LVT and laminate flooring. There will also be opportunities for synergies between the production units for MDF/HDF in Vielsalm and Baseilles, Belgium,’ says Balcaen. The deal adds about £465m of sales to Mohawk’s £5.2bn turnover. The purchase price represents almost 14 months of profits for Mohawk.

New ownership for G Plan and Parker Knoll parent SBI SBI, the owner of Parker Knoll, G Plan and Duresta, has been sold to Promethean Investments and the group’s management. Promethean Investments led an investor group in providing the equity and debt funding for the transaction, transferring ownership from its previous institutional shareholders. These included Board of the Pension Protection Fund, Barclays, Blue Bay, Brookwood and Merrill Lynch. Banking facilities were provided by Santander Corporate Banking. A spokeswoman said terms of the deal, including ownership structure, would not be disclosed at this time.

In the year to 30 June 2013, SBI generated a pre-tax profit of £3.64m from sales of £71.23m. ‘This creates an exciting new chapter in the development of the business and gives SBI a great platform to continue to craft the high quality products that our celebrated brands are known for,’ says Scott Malvenan, SBI ceo. Sir Peter Burt, Promethean Investments founding partner and executive chairman, adds: ‘Promethean is very pleased to be backing a first class management team in a business with industry leading brands. We see many exciting opportunities for further growth and the development of the business.’

Legal action stops copies Fabric company Clarke & Clarke has successfully halted copies of two of its designs from being sold. The firm took legal action against Oddie’s Textiles after its Rosetta and Chloe designs were closely reproduced on products imported and sold by Oddie’s. Oddie’s agreed to compensate Clarke & Clarke in respect of sales, together with 100% of its legal costs. Oddie’s was also required to give undertakings to not in future manufacture, import, offer for sale or sell copies of the Clarke & Clarke designs. ‘The success on behalf of Clarke & Clarke in obtaining an early settlement for damages and costs illustrates that copyright claims can be dealt with quickly and efficiently; in this case,

Hillarys to roll out flooring Direct-sell blinds firm Hillarys is to start a home visit flooring service. It is the first time the company has widened its product offer in its 40-year history. The carpet and vinyl range is to be rolled out across the UK after a small trial. Communications agency Refinery is to develop a campaign alongside a campaign for Hillarys’ core window furnishings ranges, including literature, direct mail and door drop activity. After the consumer has booked the home visit, they will be shown the flooring by a Hillarys’ representative, who will measure up and provide a quote. Flooring fitters will move furniture, lift and dispose of existing flooring and complete any necessary preparatory work, says the company. ‘Your fitter will then install the underlay before rolling out, stretching and securing your fabulous new carpet, or laying your vinyl flooring,’ it says. ‘Once the new floorcovering is in place, your fitter can even trim any doors that require adjusting before vacuuming the room to ensure a flawless finish,’ adds Hillarys.

settlement was achieved within three weeks,’ says Tony Catterall, Taylors Solicitors head of intellectual property who acted for Clarke & Clarke. ‘This should send a message to plagiarists that design owners will not be deterred from enforcing their rights because of the perception that the legal process will be slow and costly. This claim shows that an early resolution can be achieved, and at a modest cost,’ he adds. ‘We felt that we had no alternative but to pursue this claim to protect our design process and the investment in creating a range of original designs. The speedy and successful outcome justified that decision and will hopefully deter others from copying our designs,’ says Lee Clarke, Clarke & Clarke md.

Clarke & Clarke’s Rosetta

Farewell to Roy Annable Roy Annable, Brockway Carpets president, has died, aged 85. He died peacefully on 25 December 2014. Born in Stockport in 1929, he was the son of a fireman on the railways. From Stockport Grammar School, he went on to read philosophy, politics and economics at St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford. In the days when textiles were a major industry in the north, Roy started his career working with Seamless Axminster and Bernard Wardle.

In 1964 he took over Brockway Carpets with his business partner Skene Walley, and later took full ownership in 2000. His vision saw the firm evolve from a traditional weaver of Wilton and Axminster carpets to high quality contemporary floorcoverings for domestic and commercial markets at home and abroad. Under his leadership, Brockway became a pioneer of tufted carpet within the UK.

Half of Tesco Homeplus stores axed Tesco is to close half of its Homeplus branches. The chain has announced that the Bristol Cribbs, Chelmsford, Chester, Edinburgh, Southampton and Staines Homeplus branches will be closed on 15 March. They are among 43 unprofitable stores being closed. The Homeplus branches sell Tesco’s full

product offer, including furniture and homewares, except food. The closures will see just six Homeplus branches remain: Bracknell, Bristol, Denton, Nottingham, Preston and Wirral Bromborough. The chain began experimenting with the warehouse format stores in 2005 as the major supermarkets rushed to enter the non-food market.

Sales boost for Dunelm and Oak Furniture Land Cabinet retailer Oak Furniture Land increased like for like sales by more than a quarter in the early part of its winter sale as it launched its SofaStore upholstery chain. Like for like sales increased by 26% between Boxing Day and 6 January. Total sales rose by 41% after the launch of SofaStore with 57 branches – thought to be the first time a readymade chain has been introduced, rather than gradual expansion. Some £12m was invested in advertising the two chains, with a third being spent on SofaStore. Meanwhile, homewares chain Dunelm saw furniture sales leap by almost 60% to more than £20m in the six months to 27 December 2014. Made to measure curtains and blinds was the second best performing sector, driven in part by the increased geographic reach of the Dunelm At Home service. First half sales jumped by 14% to

£406.4m, including a 3.5% like for like rise in store sales (excluding online), a 70% increase in home delivery sales and six store openings. But, it says its greater move into the furniture market caused ‘a significant uplift’ in logistics costs. This includes costs related to storage locations away from its Stoke distribution centre to support increased furniture volumes. It also invested in online home delivery fulfilment costs; Dunelm At Home staffing; marketing; and developing support functions such as IT and merchandising. First half margins are forecast to be the same as the previous year. Following margin growth in the first quarter, this reversed in the second quarter as foreign exchange benefits dropped away. As a result, the chain expects operating expenses for the half year will be around £137m and pre-tax profits will be in the region of £68m.

Moooi and B&B collaborated for eight years

Moooi buys back B&B Italia stake The founders of furniture and lighting company Moooi have regained 100% ownership of the company after buying back a major stake from B&B Italia, and confirmed plans for a London showroom. Marcel Wanders, art director, and Casper Vissers, ceo, sold 50% of the company to B&B in 2006, five years after they founded it. Under the management of Vissers and Wanders, during the eight-year collaboration Moooi grew from €6m revenue in 2006 to €23m revenue in 2014. The Dutch company now exports to 69 countries and sees ‘huge potential for further expansion and acceleration’. In May it will open its first showroom in New York and plans to follow suit in London in 2017.

Profitability plateaus for optimistic Ikea Profitability at Ikea was flat last year, as profits rose at the same rate as sales. Group income increased by 3.1% to €3.3bn as sales lifted by the same amount to €27.9bn in the year to the end of August 2014. ‘Consumer spending is improving in many countries. While the challenging

12

Interiors Monthly February 2015

economic situation may not be over, there are positive signs. Important consumer markets such as the US are coming back and Europe in general is starting to recover. Even some of the challenging markets in Southern Europe are showing good signs of activity,’ says Peter Agnefjäll, Ikea ceo.

The group had already revealed that UK sales were up by 3.1% to £1.268bn. During the year Ikea invested in large price cuts and staff bonuses. The largest markets were Germany, the US, France, Russia and Sweden. Ikea wants sales to reach €50bn by 2020.

Your questions answered Helen Kershaw, Guardsman head of marketing, answers your questions on product protection

Q

We stopped selling protection products a few years ago as we didn’t sell many. Now the market is better, we’d like to start offering them again but we don’t know how to price the products. We want to generate a profit from them but not at the expense of deterring customers from buying. Obviously a customer spending £2,000 is more likely to want one than someone spending £250, but is there any information on what shoppers will pay?

A

Generally when the features and benefits of a protection plan are explained fully to consumers, they appreciate their value. Peace of mind is key for them when making what is considered to be a major investment for the home. Guardsman believes it is important to understand not only retailers but also consumers and has conducted significant research into the purchasing of protection plans. Consumers say they are prepared to spend on average 10%-12% of the value of the furniture on a protection plan. As you correctly identify, the value of the furniture does play a part, however there is also a correlation to the level of risk of accidental damage the consumer perceives there to be for their particular item of furniture. The greater the risk, the more likely they are to buy. Don’t forget, consumers buying in the lower price bracket can probably ill-afford to replace the item quickly, so value a protection plan even more.

TRENDS

Warm and natural Amanda Watson, Betta Living head of design, outlines her top interiors trends for 2015 Stimuli for 2015’s top interior design trends come from all areas of daily life, from catwalks to a walk in the park, and classic watercolours of the 19th century to iridescent finishes from the 1980s. There will be some strong colour trends with big hitters including Dulux, Pantone and fashion pundits hinting at indulgent greens, marsala, copper blush and custard yellow as key colours to invest in if you want to be on trend in 2015. Also look out for tangerine orange, toasted almond and glacier grey. Verdant palettes in home decors are coming from the catwalk, expressed in luxury heritage tailoring, green feathers, green sheepskin and grassy lace statement pieces. Another influence on this trend is Google earth. Aerial views of the countryside show how the hues of

green fields connect in naturally beautiful ways, which is being cleverly replicated in home interior schemes from rugs to wall tiles. Pantone’s colour of the year is Marsala, while Dulux’s is a softer pink/red hue named Copper Blush. This versatile pinky orange will complement grey tones,

woods and metallics, especially copper. This warmer palette reflects a more positive outlook for the year. Aquamarine is a fabulous colour for homes, evoking thoughts of soothing tropical waters and its ability to coordinate with other popular 2015 colours. Visit: www.bettaliving.co.uk

A huge trend forecast is the influence of classic watercolours and beautiful brushstrokes for new takes on florals and painting, but this artwork won’t be hung as masterpieces on walls; hand-painted floral motifs and abstract designs will be applied to cushions, entire walls and window blinds. This look was present on the fashion catwalks and as digital printing techniques now allow beautiful brushstrokes and impressionistic fashion to be enjoyed on such a wide choice of surfaces, it will be translated in a variety of ways in 2015 room schemes. Colours merge in almost childlike ways and vary from fresh and bright to bold and dramatic.

The Wansford Oak collection The brand new Wasnford Oak collection is our best ever value oak range. With 39 items for occasional, dining and bedroom, it is also one of our largest, bringing great variety and huge sales the beauty, warmth and character of oak to be shown to its true potential.

TRENDS TERRAINESQUE (PRIMEVAL FOREST) The great outdoors will again have an impact on our home interior colours and textures this year, as well as inspiring fun features such as the creation of unexpected, almost secret, oases in urban surrounds; forming quiet zones to disconnect with technology and a calm nature-inspired area to escape the hustle and bustle of modern day living. In 2015 the nature theme will embrace deep forest greens and earth tones with the warmth of jungle climes and humid atmosphere of the rainforest that allow rooms to live and breathe. Farrow & Ball cites Tanner’s Brown as a key colour for 2015.

As well as influencing the colour palette, which will see us with almost poisonous looking colours associated with exotic frogs, lizards and spiders adorning our walls and accessories, the trend will juxtapose rich hand-crafted and unfinished items with modern pieces. Salvaged wood is another key look within this trend. Sir John Everett Millais’ oil painting Ophelia (or the lady in the lake), known for its detailed flora of the river and the riverbank, stressing the patterns of growth and decay in a natural ecosystem, is a useful reference for this trend.

HYDROPHOBIA (AURORA) Also taking a cue from nature is the Hydrophobia trend, mimicking the effect of oil hitting water and the amazing patterns and colours that occur. These waterborne effects will enter homes in the form of wall tiles, lights, fabric designs and vases. This is a fresh, feminine look and ideal for modern homes and styling – especially when mixed with whites, milky glass, mirrors and hazy plastics.

CHINA IN YOUR HANDS Classic blue and white bone china has been a mainstay in UK homes for decades. And it’s being revived for 2015 as the classic combination of blue and white is interpreted across wallpapers, bedding and lampshades. Designs range from traditional chinese patterns and bold blooms to geometrics and cool circles. Think colbalt blues and denims, associated with vintage crockery and antique dinnerware, for this look. This trend adds a new dimension to a neutral scheme and is ideal for those who follow more minimalist codes. Create calming sanctuaries and escapes with clean lines and neutral hues, but inject crystals, gems, metallics and shiny skin-effect fabrics, as well as subtle tones to stark white, to update the home for 2015.

Classic Revival Steppe

Rug ‘n’ roll Domotex’s revamped Carpet Design Awards Heart No 1 Original The expert jury picked the best rugs at the show after whittling down more than 250 entries to 25 finalists and then eight winners. The winning designs impressed the jury with their outstanding characteristics in terms of form, colour and material. Entries were judged with regard to design and design concept, material, finish, texture and quality, as well as sustainability and branding. The head of the Carpet Design Awards jury, Michael Sodeau, who has a design practice in London, said of the judging process: ‘This year the panel consisted of people with hugely different skill sets all of whom work in different countries. This meant that everyone’s professional experience was quite different, and sharing our opinions was very engaging and informative, and I think has led to an interesting range of results.’ Visit: www.domotex.de

Having an adventure Collins and Hayes unveiled its future under md Matt O’Flynn with numerous designs that broke new ground for the upholstery firm. Big and boxy was previously a description for many Collins and Hayes designs: but no more. Horst, named after photographer Horst P Horst was a prime example. It sports a felted wool cover, a slim arm and contrast leather piping with the option of a loose leather cover for the arms and base. Each version gives very different looks along with a curved corner version. Launches were split between those targeted at 35-plus consumers and those for the baby boomer generation who want style that doesn’t remind them of their childhood. Colour, organic curves, sprung backs and adventure were at the core of the collection.

Global Home showcased six new ranges. Collection 90, a living and dining collection features a reinforced concrete table top with a clear glaze finish and brushed acacia wood legs. Collection 98 (pictured), also a living and dining range, is painted and lacquered in buttermilk colour and paired with oiled oak tops. Handcrafted water hyacinth baskets and silver satin finished handles give the collection a mix of contemporary and country styles.

Clean sweep Corndell debuted the reclaimed pine Barrington, mid-century Fairford and retro Arlington alongside new branding. Nimbus saw the Mist finishes added while updated collections had a cleaner look.

Furmanac presented its Hestia Motion range of luxury adjustable beds, with three bases: Mirage, Freedom and Independent (which has a maximum user weight of 57stone) and seven mattresses: Memory, Premium, Principal, Prime, Memory on pocket, Latex on pocket and Natural. The Emperor bed (pictured) can either be upholstered in fabric or leather, or with outer and inner contrasting fabric/leather with the option of bronze, silver or no studs. The Belmont with its wingback design, mirrored in the footboard and curved legs, is available as either a static frame or with a five-part, multi-slat motorised system.

Furnico introduced Manor (pictured) with its patchwork of complementary fabrics alongside the Shuttleworth corner group in the Synergy range. Its Life collection features three models, each available as standard back or scatterback, with customers able to choose their preferred fabric colourway for both the main upholstery and piping. Two models are static and a third is a motion product, introducing recliners to a younger market who may not previously have considered such a purchase.

Hall change pays off XYZ exhibited in Hall 1 for the first time. ‘It was a gamble for us, but one which has paid off. We not only provide a price point product to our mid to high end retailers through our Polish production facility under the XYZ brand, but also manufacture product under our Paulus & Brown brand, which had been wrongly positioned in the volume halls for some time,’ says Jamie Brown, XYZ owner. ‘Being in one place in Hall 1, the home for the country’s finest manufacturers, gave us the opportunity to showcase our higher end products to a new audience that we have not previously seen, as well as supporting our existing customer base who came to find us. We were overwhelmed at the interest we achieved being in Hall 1, so are now faced with a harder decision of where we will be next year.’ The company has also invested in technology, allowing customers to manage their orders online. ‘We realised that we really needed to offer more to our customers in regards to technology and support. REVIEW Woodman makes and supplies chairs and components Left: Stockholm, Bergen and Cambridge chairs

In the UK hotseat Woodman Chairs is a rare creature in the UK chair business these days: a supplier that also makes chairs. ‘Not only are we a leading wholesaler of wooden chairs to both the retail and contract markets, we make most of them, to our own designs and in a wide choice of styles, finishes and seat options,’ says Tom Woodman, Woodman Chairs director. It also makes chairs, chair frames and components for other wholesalers and manufacturers.

52

Interiors Monthly February 2015

‘Being UK based, flexible and price competitive, we offer a very attractive alternative to container suppliers or other wholesalers who, typically, source from China or the Far East,’ he explains. The company enjoyed record sales at the show. ‘We stood out as one of a kind. It is easy to see what we are about. It was really rewarding to speak to so many people who can readily appreciate what we can do for them with contemporary and traditional wooden chairs in oak and beech.

‘Customers can instantly see that we offer them many more attractive chair styles, and options within those styles, than they can readily get, either direct from China or as packaged with their tables. They can also see that they do not need to tie up large amounts of cash months ahead in container quantities and then have to store them, often expensively, because they can buy what they want, what’s selling and when they want it, from us,’ says Woodman. Left: Maori feature on Invictus POS boards Right: The iSense collection has been enhanced

Soft but tough debuts Associated Weavers looked to build on the success of last year’s Domotex launch of the iSense collection of supersoft carpets by debuting Invictus and expanding colours and ranges for iSense. Invictus uses the iVinci yarn that AW says is a new generation of Solution Dyed Olefin yarns characterised by superior softness, lustre, bulk and stain resistance. Orion and Sirius are plains in 50oz and 70oz weights respectively, while Pegasus and Perseus are heathers in 50oz and 70oz weights respectively. The plains are available in 14 colours and the heathers in 16. The range is backed by marketing

materials that combine rugby and Maori traditions. A video shows children playing in a living room who are transformed into Maori warriors when adults enter the room to watch rugby on TV and want the children to stop playing. After the confrontation between the transformed children and the adults, the carpet is seen to be undamaged and retaining its softness, and everyone comes together to watch the game. Maori also features on POS boards. Suspense, Surprise and Satin were among the iSense additions. Suspense has a delustered yarn and will be the collection’s top of the range product along with a lighter version; Surprise

contains Lurex in the yarn for sparkle, and Satin is a 50oz version of the 40oz Seduction. Two colours were added to Seduction, Splendour and Serenity. Both the latest iSense ranges and Invictus have a new Fusion Bac backing. In the Stainaway collection, the new Studio Twist in a 34oz weight has a dozen colours; multi-width options were added to Gladiator along with six colours; Bellaire, Promenade and Sophistication all had five more colours; Stainaway Saxony had four colours added, while Stainaway Tweed, Denby Twist and Briar Twist were recoloured. Denizli Home Textile Cluster Manchester 24 February/London 26 February

PREVIEW

74

Talk Turkey textiles Two UK events to promote Turkish products Eighteen Turkish textile producers will be taking part in the Denizli Home Textile Cluster exhibitions in Manchester and London this month. ‘As the home textile capital of Turkey, Denizli plays a major role in the development of the Turkish home textile industry. A huge variety of superior products, coupled with a 4,000 year history, means it is no coincidence that Denizli has become world-renowned for high quality,’ says Suleyman Kocasert, Denizli Exporters Association president and Turkish Exporters Assembly deputy chairman. He says by combining modern technology with an established textile finishing industry, it is possible to produce and market desirable, fashionable and quality products. In 2014 Denizli was the eighth largest exporting area in Turkey, with exports of $3.2bn, of which the majority were home textiles. ‘Trade and commercial relations between the UK and Turkey have been so entwined that the UK is the third largest importer of Turkish products worth $9.7bn. It is our belief that the economic ties between the UK and Turkey will intensify through international trade, becoming stronger than ever in forthcoming years,’ explains Kocasert. Two-thirds of the towels and bathrobes and a third of sheets produced

Interiors Monthly February 2015

in Turkey are made in Denizli. ‘Our towel, bathrobe and bedlinen products represent a global understanding of current home textile fashion trends. From cotton to bamboo and linen to organic, a large variety of materials are offered to customers. Design and sampling are professionally handled to ensure that our customers have an excellent range of choices. All

processes from production to packaging are high-tech and accompanied with global certifications to ensure outstanding quality,’ he says. The companies will be exhibiting at the Radisson Blue Edwardian Hotel, Manchester on 24 February from 10am6pm and the Westbury Mayfair Hotel, London on 26 February from 10am-6pm.
