Fingers in pies... lots of pies Sports Direct has added upholstery to the growing list of products it sells on high streets across the country So can Mike Ashley save the high street? According to information company GlobalData, Mike Ashley’s somewhat occasionally haphazard-looking policy of turning Sports Direct from a sportswear and equipment retailer into a mini retail conglomerate means it now accounts for 3% of all non-food spending in this country. Be it that Agent Provocateur underwear, bicycle, computer game, discounted pair of trainers and now upholstery you were after, Sports Direct either owns the brands that sell us these things up and down the country or owns a significant shareholding in them. To this list it has added Sofa.com, beating ScS to the ownership of the online and showroom retailer. Sofa.com already had concessions in some House of Fraser branches (although not the 27 stores ScS pulled out of ) so expect that number to increase significantly in the months ahead as House of Fraser looks to fill the shopfloor space it found left empty after concessions pulled out. House of Fraser had been generating healthy sales for ScS before the department store chain’s reputation took a battering and consumers stayed away, many probably fearing they might not get their order fulfilled or their money back not knowing they were buying from ScS. If Sofa.com is rolled out to the 37 House of Fraser branches Ashley has done deals on rents for, it could find itself one of the high street’s main furniture players. And who would have thought that a while ago? One retailer that has long stuck to its plan is DFS. It has seen growth across its four brands, and enjoyed an overall 10% rise in sales in the final five months of 2018 if you strip out Sofology. That is easily outperforming the market. Both it and ScS made play of the fact that in times of uncertainty (yes, the B-word) they are positioned to grow market share as shoppers turn to larger retailers they expect to be in business by the time the sofa is due for delivery.

DFS sees sales leap DFS saw sales climb at all of its formats in the final five months of 2018. It said sales rose by 29% in the five months to 30 December. Allowing for the purchase of Sofology, sales were up 10%. ‘This performance reflects positive like-for-like order intake growth achieved in each of our DFS, Dwell and Sofa Workshop retail operations and the strength of our online channels which are benefiting from sustained investment and development,’ said the chain. ‘Sofology has maintained its solid underlying trading progress with good like-for-like growth and benefits from
five successful new store openings since the start of the prior financial year.’ It said it believed trading had been helped by shoppers who had put off buying during the exceptionally hot British summer. ‘While we have achieved a good sales performance, helped by latent demand, we remain cautious around our full-year outlook, and as such our profit expectations for the full year remain unchanged,’ it adds. DFS picked up deferred sales from the summer
Samson calls time on branded UK presence Samson Holding is to exit the UK branded furniture market after a decade, putting Willis & Gambier up for sale and blaming Brexit. The Chinese manufacturing group says

the cabinet company will close at the end of April, with no orders accepted after 28 February. Samson bought the company from administration in October 2008 for an initial £4.43m. ‘The UK, following the Brexit decision made in 2016, is facing extremely challenging market conditions, with little sign of clarity. Furthermore, the change in customer buying patterns and expectations has added to the pressure placed on our division in the UK, Willis & Gambier,’ says Samson.
House of Fraser four to stay open Sports Direct has reversed its decision to close four House of Fraser stores within Intu-owned shopping centres. In November last year the group announced that it had been unable to reach agreement with the property company over the Lakeside, Metrocentre, Norwich and Nottingham branches, and called for landlords to be more proactive. ‘We confirm that following constructive discussions with Sports Direct, we have reached an interim agreement on four House of Fraser stores at Intu Chapelfield, Intu Lakeside, Intu Metrocentre and Intu Victoria Centre,’ said an Intu statement.

Dunelm delivers sales boost but pushes back online revamp Dunelm enjoyed a better than forecast run-up to Christmas, but has delayed the relaunch of its website. In the quarter to 29 December like-for-like sales rose by 9%. In-store like-for-like sales rose by 5.7% and online sales rose 37.9%. Margins also rose and it said it expected half-year pre-tax profits to be about £70m, with full year profits ahead of forecasts. ‘Given unprecedented levels of uncertainty currently facing consumers and businesses in the UK, we remain cautious about our full year outlook. If the homewares market continues to grow at a similar rate to that experienced in the first half, we expect to deliver full year pre-tax profits modestly ahead of the top of the range of current analysts' forecasts [of £108m-£112m].’ Its website will now be relaunched in the summer: in

Upholstery manufacturer Ashley Manor has strengthened its management team with two senior appointments. Paul Whitelocks has become md. ‘Paul was the obvious person for me to help steer Ashley Manor into its next phase as a fastgrowing British business,’ said Mark Smith, Ashley Manor, Alexander & James and AMX Design ceo. Lisa Broad joins as sales director. ‘Lisa is well known for her stylish approach to range development being responsible for many high profile launches at Harveys as head of buying. We are extremely lucky to have her,’ said Smith.

October the group said the website would be complete in the third quarter but this has been put back to the fourth quarter. ‘Development of our multichannel proposition remains a priority and we expect to begin the launch of our new website to customers in the fourth quarter. This is slightly later than previously communicated as we evolve and optimise our plans. ‘The new platform will offer Click & Collect to customers, and allow us to develop our multichannel offer with greater agility going forward,’ it says. ‘Our multichannel proposition is improving all the time, and we are looking forward to introducing our new web platform in the summer, using more flexible technology which will allow us to better serve our customers in a changing retail landscape,’ says Nick Wilkinson, Dunelm chief executive.
Gallery buys Parlane Galley Direct acquired accessories, gifts and furniture wholesaler Parlane International ‘We are very proud of our business, which has been developed over the past 48 years. We have grown to a size where we now need to partner with a like-minded business. The synergies between Gallery Direct and ourselves are obvious and we are delighted to become part of the Gallery team going forward,’ said Mike Burgess, Parlane International md. ‘The two companies share the same core values. Like ourselves, Parlane is a well-established business which has developed a strong, trusted brand, focusing on design, quality and value for money. It has close working relationships with its suppliers,

which produce excellent products for it, many designed in-house or exclusively procured from its international suppliers,’ said Peter Delaney, Gallery Direct md. ‘I am confident that the two businesses will work closely together to deliver benefits to both companies and to the respective customers.’
Prevents all rugs and mats from slipping or creeping on any floor surface. Why do I need underlay for my rug or mat? Why choose our underlay? • Help maintain the appearance of a rug or mat for the duration of its lifetime. • Reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls from rugs or mats. • Stop your rug or mat from slipping on smooth floors and creeping on carpet. • Stop your rug or mat from curling at the corners and pushing up against furniture. • Stop abrasion on timber or delicate floor surfaces. • Provide extra cushioning. Our underlay is available in the following sizes: 60 x 120cm
92 x 150cm
70 x 240cm
120 x 180cm
140 x 200cm
170 x 240cm

Also available in 25m rolls. Widths: 60, 92, 120, 180, 240cm
Approximately 4mm thick / 350 grams per square metre
• This is a high performance premium underlay that has been developed and engineered to obtain the best anti-slip performance on smooth floors (grey side) and the best anti-creep performance on carpeting (black side). • Unlike cheaper alternatives, this product is made in America and will continue to work long past the life of your rug or mat. • Made of two different polyester fibres, needle punched together, and coated on both sides with a specially formulated water based pressure sensitive dry adhesive. This specially formulated coating allows it to outperform underlays coated with a plain polymeric-acrylic resin. • Thicker and denser compared to other underlays which produces a light cushioning effect and prevents horizontal movement which causes rucking. • Suitable for use with underfloor heating not exceeding a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius. • Repositionable, odourless, breathable and harmless to all floor surfaces, rugs and mats.
Fitting & Care Instructions • Ensure the floor is vacuumed, clean and dry. • The underlay should be approximately 3-5cm smaller than the rug or mat. • If required the underlay can be easily cut to size with household scissors. • Remove the plastic film from the underlay before fitting. • Do not wash or dry clean the underlay. • If the underlay loses its adhesion over time, use a fine spray of clean water to revive the adhesive and leave to air dry before re-fitting. • If using with an oversized rug or mat, simply use as many pieces of underlay as required side-by-side. Taping or splicing is not necessary. Rug or Mat on Carpet • Place the black side facing downwards on the carpet. • Place the rug or mat on the grey side. Rug or Mat on Smooth Flooring • Place the grey side facing downwards on the smooth floor. • Place the rug or mat on the black side.

Kitchen sector set for middle market squeeze and lower-end ‘battle royale’ The UK kitchen market will see growth of just £50m this year as the middle market is squeezed as online retailers and DIY chains fight it out at the lower end, according to new research. MTW Research says the UK kitchen market will grow despite ongoing challenges for the £3bn kitchen industry. Its research found that higher value rigid kitchen cabinets, cooking appliances, premium taps and dishwashers are outperforming the kitchen market. However, the mid market continues to experience a squeeze on both prices and profits, with online retailers continuing to gain share through aggressive pricing strategies. ‘Sophisticated consumers know that the old binary choice of traditional or modern kitchen design is defunct. The kitchen market is more complex than ever in terms of design, specification and purchasing criteria and several kitchen suppliers have fallen foul of rapid trend changes recently,’ says Mark Waddy, MTW Research director. ‘There has been a discernible shift in kitchen distribution for 2019. Kitchen retailers have mostly won the battle against the sheds who are repositioning to more traditional DIY market positions. Growth in the lower value sector is likely to be elusive in 2019, forcing online and DIY channels
to engage in a battle royale on pricing, with profound implications for kitchen suppliers with poorly defined market positions. ‘Lower growth in the mass market is likely to be compounded by the kitchen refresh trend in 2019, with cost-conscious consumers opting to switch out doors, handles and taps rather than undertake larger scale full kitchen refits. However, real term growth is forecast to return to the market in the second half of 2020.’

ScS ‘resilient’ ScS has said sales in the past six months were in line with expectations. Like-for-like orders grew by 1.5% in the 26 weeks to 26 January. ‘Trading over the key winter sales period, whilst impacted, as expected, by the loss of one trading day in the week of Boxing Day, was also in line with our expectations,’ it said. It confirmed it had closed its 27 House of Fraser concessions. ‘Whilst we are mindful of the risk from the impending Brexit outcome, we believe the group's increasing resilience puts the business in a strong position to manage the continued economic uncertainty and take advantage of opportunities,’ it says.

The perils of being independent Not everybody can be happy I received this email recently: I have received your report and quite honestly it’s a joke. If you Google ‘laminate flooring faults’ your report is identical. I put it to you, sir, that you are a fraud and are in cahoots with [retailer]. I will uncover you. I will find out your qualifications. And I’m sure I can find something that links you to [retailer]. My joiner is 20 times more of an expert in flooring than you and knows his job. He has done it hundreds of times, never a complaint. This is the first floor because the flooring has a fault, not the worker who you have now blamed. I totally disagree with you. He could and has a right to charge you with slander, which is being considered. I’m backing him all the way. You could have wrecked his reputation. You are not that good an expert, you haven’t got a clue. I’m onto you big
time. I think I will become a flooring expert, easy peasy. I replied: Thank you for your email and for the telephone call from your son in law who installed your laminate flooring. I’m very sorry that you don’t agree with my opinion about why the flooring has failed. Attached is a copy of my CV. You will see I have no connections with [retailer]. I carry out work for consumers as well as businesses, and for independent organisations like The Furniture Ombudsman (which I set up in 1992) as well as solicitors, Trading Standards and consumer radio and TV programmes. I frequently provide evidence to help resolve court claims. I hope this will provide reassurance about my integrity. I am very willing to consider any information which you feel I may have
overlooked when carrying out my inspection and forming my opinion. If this shows I have made a mistake I will be pleased to amend my opinion. However, there is nothing in your email, nor was there in your son in law’s call, that contradicts the evidence I found and which is recorded in my report and the photographs. I regret that being an independent expert means I may have to be unpopular and I fully understand that sometimes people disagree with me. Return to the NEC
Sleephealthy was introduced
Silentnight made its first appearance at JFS for a decade Last month’s January Furniture Show saw something that visitors had not seen for a decade: a Silentnight stand. Ten years after many bed manufacturers called time on the escalating arms race of larger and larger stands that eventually meant the cost of exhibiting at the NEC could no longer be justified, Silentnight had the largest stand in Hall 5, with space for its Silentnight, Sealy, Rest Assured brands, its testing and development laboratory and hospitality division. ‘JFS allows us to appeal to the wider furniture retailer, rather than just specialist bed retailers. We wanted the
stand to reflect the layout of the retail outlets at Lakeside and Trafford Centre, which is the way we would like stockists to display in-store,’ says Steve Freeman, Silentnight md. ‘JFS also gives us overseas buyers as we look to take the Silentnight brand into overseas markets. Our Chinese licensee is planning a chain of branded showrooms across the country and it will also be introducing Rest Assured by the middle of the year. All the products are made in the UK and exported to China.’ While the UK remains the core market, it is increasingly looking to promote the two brands across the globe. This also

gives it an increasing number of partners to talk to about future developments. ‘We are working with licensees to look at how consumers can get the best sleep. Health and sleep are now on consumers’ minds,’ says Freeman. The group is looking at making products easier to dismantle and facilitating the reuse of materials in other industries. ‘We have evolved to have more eco-friendly products, which is demonstrated by the two FMC Sustainability Awards. Eco Comfort is now available across the children’s and adult sectors and we are introducing it to the hospitality sector as hotel chains look to be greener. ‘We brought parts of the testing and development lab to the NEC to show our commitment to quality and the innovations made in understanding how consumers can get the best sleep.’ On show was Silentnight’s Sleephealthy collection of three medium comfort rated mattresses with a choice of 600, 1,200 or 2,000 pocket springs, all featuring its Eco Comfort Fibres and all foam and chemical free. It was joined by the Maxi Store divan base that has cut-out sides for increased storage. Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk

The Irresistible mattress is a rollup design, with encapsulated pocket springs and multi-layered fillings, including a layer of Vystex foam, which is 47% more effective than standard
memory foams in heat dissipation. Featuring natural materials such as cotton, the Everynight mattress has multi-layered fillings of upholstery, encapsulated pocket springs and side stitching to help support the mattress and prevent sagging. The Natural mattress has multi-layered fillings of materials such as silk, wool and cotton, helping to regulate body temperature, giving great absorption and hypo-allergenic properties. Luxury has natural fillings including alpaca, silk, wool and cashmere and is available in two spring tensions: Sumptuous and Supportive. In 5ft and 6ft models, the mattress can have both. There is a choice of a shallow base, divan with no drawers, divan with two or four drawers and ottoman, all available in six fabrics. Complete the bed by choosing a headboard. Four options suit different tastes and styles of interior: the Margot offers a contemporary feel; Datsun has a softer look; the winged Jenson is a contemporary design with a retro twist; and Haywood is more traditional with deep buttoning. The company made its imm cologne debut
Sleepeezee highlighted its royal connection at imm cologne Sleepeezee made its debut at imm cologne last month, highlighting its status as a Royal Warrant holder. The manufacturer showed alongside fellow Adova Group brand Treca in hall 11.3, with a new collection of luxury, hand-made, 100% natural beds which received much praise and interest. To contrast Treca’s luxury Parisian feel and hospitality, Sleepeezee hosted a traditional British themed bar and hospitality area that proved a popular focal point for visitors. Guests could enjoy a relaxing English gin and tonic whilst perusing the new Pure collection and watching demonstrations of the traditional hand side-stitching techniques that are a key feature of the range. During the show, 20 new accounts were opened across countries such as Belgium, Holland, Germany and Hungary, with good prospects in Russia, France, Portugal, Poland, South Korea and China, all of which help to achieve one of Sleepeezee’s key targets for 2019

An imaginative and much admired POS was also offered to complement the new collection, helping to establish the Sleepeezee brand in stores and offer a clear point of difference against competitors. Visit: www.sleepeezee.com

Karndean Designflooring’s Heritage tile collection is inspired by two eras Karndean Designflooring is introducing a collection featuring a range of designs inspired by the architectural tiled floors of grand Victorian and Regency villas and townhouses. The Heritage Collection is designed to give the opulent look of classic geometric tiles. From striking monochrome designs to blended traditional patterns, the collection reflects both the classic elegance of historic homes as well as the boldness of contemporary trends. Whether recreating the original character of an elegant period interior or seeking a contemporary statement look, the new collection features a mix of shades that can be used to create a totally individual finish. Perfect for busy rooms where highly durable flooring is required, the Heritage Collection reinvents historical style with all the benefits of LVT, offering a practical choice for an on-trend, modern floor. Presenting 10 exclusive new colours, from terracotta, crimson and gold to dove grey, taupe and baby blue, alongside two Opus designs, Luna and Nero, the collection features square, triangular and octagonal tiles, available in 12 shades, which can be mixed and matched in any combination to create a truly individual floor. The versatility of the new Heritage Collection is shown with 18 pre-assembled colour combinations in four tile patterns: Clifton, with its classic pattern of square and triangular tiles to create a star and

Aspire’s designs use artwork by the designer
Aspire’s latest licensed range is with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen
A new collaboration with designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (above) will give Aspire a range of products that is ‘completely different from anything else on the market’, according to Paul Murphy, Aspire ceo. The new, classical art inspired Sleeping Beauty range, initially comprising three beds and eight headboards, will appeal to design-led customers such as boutique hotels, and Murphy says there’s been a lot of interest from department stores too. The products are available as bed and headboard sets or as separate products and the headboards can be used with conventional divans or wall mounted. Lead times are currently up to four weeks but the company will soon hold stocks of the most popular designs, bringing lead times down considerably. Murphy says of Llewelyn-Bowen: ‘Working with him has been really
44
Interiors Monthly February 2019
enjoyable as he’s really hands on and enthusiastic. He likes to visit the factory and spends a lot of time with our design and marketing people.’ ‘The Sleeping Beauty Collection is my design hymn to the romantic tradition of the bedroom. Latterly beds have become a matter of science or orthopaedics; I want to bring sexy back between the sheets with beds that are, for sure, divinely comfortable but that also take the sleeper to unprecedented heights of contemporary glamour,’ says Llewelyn-Bowen. ‘Sleeping Beauty has allowed me to indulge my passion for glamorous, voluptuous design. I love the fact that the designs I’ve evolved so lovingly for this collection are skillfully made by hand using the traditional British methods that guarantee unparalleled quality and comfort. As a young and dynamic company Aspire has already begun to spark something of a boutique manufacturing renaissance in the North East and it gives me huge pride to see Sleeping Beauty being so skilfully brought to life in the UK.’ Aspire is experienced in working with licensed products, through its established range in partnership with homewares designer Catherine Lansfield. ‘Licensing is a great way to do more creative work, collaborating with designers to come up with new inventive products that the
average furniture manufacturer would never create,’ Murphy says. Llewelyn-Bowen’s profile will be lifted when he is one of the contestants in the BBC One four-part series Celebrity Painting Challenge this spring. ‘This range will raise our profile, open a few doors and get a lot of media interest, all of which makes us better placed to sell our volume products,’ says Murphy. Aspire plans to expand its manufacturing plant in Barnsley to cope with expected demand for its new ottoman beds. Murphy says that the 25-strong workforce could be doubled if sales forecasts are correct. ‘There’s an enormous demand for storage solutions as many apartments are so tiny. As homes get smaller and space tighter, this type of product works really well, especially for young people renting rooms, where the amount of storage space provided by an ottoman makes a huge difference.’ With the bases and mattresses made in Yorkshire, Murphy says the company is in a good position to compete with imports and to take advantage of a ‘massive opportunity’ in the high-volume private label sector. ‘A lot of people import this sort of product but styles tend to be limited and they often run out of stock. Lead times can be 12 weeks, while our lead time is a week or two.’ Visit: www.aspire-furniture.co.uk

The sheer scale of January Furniture Show and its focus on furniture provided the opportunity to expand and display more of the brand’s large statement pieces. With four roomsets, Premier Housewares was able to give visitors an insight into the breadth and diversity of its luxury collections and how they reference established and forthcoming interior design trends. The boho trend has been evolving for some years now, with artistic experimentation and a celebration of global culture to the fore. Visitors were met with the Fifty Five South Java and Lagom seating collection, their renewable openwork rattan structures harmonising with the richly grained elm wood of the Midas dining table. The Lyon dining and storage range maintained the natural theme. Crafted from American oak, the collection is characterised by design lines inspired by classical architectural forms. This approach gives the collection a timeless quality that makes it easy to style with a variety of interior trends. Counterpointing these more earthy collections was its luxe roomset,

The Melbourne range gave visitors the opportunity to explore tactility and sustainability further, using natural rope to add a subdued grey colour palette to interior settings. Furlong showed its wide range of products Furlong Flooring enjoyed a very positive response from visitors. ‘We have seen existing customers and new business from those looking for different designs and a different approach to the market,’ said Mike Symonds, Furlong Flooring md. ‘Having the diversity of products
we offer meets the requirements of the visitors you see at the NEC. We have had lots of interest in LVT and wood flooring.’ The company had product displays in roomset cameos, which ‘allowed people to see new opportunities’. ‘For a lot of commercial customers, they are looking for a company that can
deliver them the right product at the right price and at the right time. ‘Having all the products together on one stand rather than carpet and hard flooring being on separate stands has been a success and has shown visitors the breadth of our offer,’ said Symonds. Visit: www.furlongflooring.co.uk

BEDS AND BEDROOM
Protect-A-Bed, a leader in healthy sleep and mattress protection, enjoyed another successful January Furniture Show. With the launch of its TV display bays in 2018, Protect-A-Bed has continued rolling out the display to an even greater number of retailers. The show also saw the launch of its Platinum Club, with retailers gaining structured rewards whilst consistently growing sales. Visit: www.protectabed.co.uk
‘The show was a huge success for us. We kept our stand simple this year and showcased a few items from the bedsteads range and the Helix mattress collection, which all gained a great amount of recognition. Our maxi storage drew in a lot of attention and we are pleased with a great start to 2019,’ says Bilkis Patel, Vogue Beds business development and marketing manager. Visit: www.voguebeds.co.uk
BEDS AND BEDROOM One-Call Furniture continues to see steady positive sales growth in its bedroom furniture ranges and was at the January Furniture Show showing its 2019 offer, including new colours in the Andante range reflecting the latest trends in the marketplace. With its manufacturing base in London and components mostly sourced from the UK, One-Call says it is well protected from the uncertainty over Brexit. ‘Our product components are largely UK sourced, so we do not anticipate being as affected by potential trade barriers and

The seventh edition of the AIS Furniture Show saw a wide range of products Colour trends in clocks tend to follow those in furniture, says Laurence Whiting, Acctim Clocks sales director, but at this show the company was aiming to lead the way with emerging colours such as blush pink, olive green, pale yellow and mauve. Texture was also a feature, with

metal, terrazzo, marble and distressed wood. New shapes had a retro and geometric look and statement pieces included the Leksvik 50cm diameter clock with distressed wood surround. C Dusselkamp showed four new wardrobe and bedroom sets in different sizes and colours. They all featured a mix of textures and finishes, such as solid oak with lacquer, all in a contemporary Scandi style. The trend for householders to knock through walls to create more space means bigger kitchens and fewer dining rooms, according to James Stafford, Habufa UK director. That means there’s demand for larger and more interesting dining tables. The company’s new ranges are Janella in brown oak and Pedro in light oak. Each table can extend to seat up to 10 people.
Hugo Park was showing at the show for the first time, having acquired a licence from designer Christiane Lemieux, founder and creative director of fashion and home design brand DwellStudio. The pieces for the Living by Christiane Lemieux brand feature what director Philip Paton-Freeman called ‘affordable luxury’, with touches of hand-applied gold leaf. The Luxor range includes a console, shelf unit, side table and coffee table, while the Chaplin range features patterned solid oak with gold leaf and steel frames. ‘It’s been incredibly successful and people have shown a lot of interest,’ says Paton-Freeman, predicting that more colour and statement pieces would come through this year. For example, the sofas shown were in royal blue and racing-style green shades. ‘Grey might work in a sparse

apartment but there’s a limit to how far you can go with it in a larger home; you need a splash of colour,’ he says. New exhibitor Jones & Co launched with a splash of colour: a modular purple sofa was among the four sofa models exclusive to AIS members and a set of three different-sized tub chairs were shown in dusty pink. ‘The largest, with the high back, is really a statement piece,’ says Alan Pledge, Jones & Co designer. ‘It’s the small one that sells, but it’s useful to display them all.’ Splashes of teal and orange and a tropical botanical print also made for an eye-catching stand. ‘Stores can use accent colours to inject some colour to liven up the sea of grey.’ The company, which manufacturers in Lithuania, can cover its pieces with the customer’s choice of fabric, with a six to eight week delivery time. ‘We’re quite a new business and are putting our toes in the water with this show and I’m very happy so far,’ says Pledge. Mastercraft Rugs’ Canyon featured new colours such as dusty pink, greens and golds. The Alhambra polyester range of traditional patterns is now available in modern colours with a vintage, pre-worn effect. Status was showing its existing range of high-gloss acrylic tables made of recycled FSC-certified wood and topped with high-res Japanese photographic wood-effect foil print. UK agent Sandro Piatti observed that while grey remained popular, warmer wood shades such as
ash were starting to come back. ‘We’ll be looking with interest at Milan in April to see what the next trend in veneer will be,’ he says. UK-CF’s new Merton range included a 1,800mm-wide media unit and a room divider shelving unit. Lighting is a feature
of the range. Some of the modular units have back lights, including omnidirectional LED lights. And when the interior lights in a display cabinet with a semi-industrial look are not switched on, the glass door takes on a mirror tint. Meeting demand
Cygnet is available in leather or fabric
himolla is responding to changes in taste Even after 70 years in the furniture industry himolla is still constantly learning and listening to customers and the marketplace. ‘Our latest intelligence suggests that a considerable sector of the market is demanding a fresh, new look for recliners and sofas,’ says Rob Davies, himolla UK sales agent. ‘The launch of Swan, Cygnet and Albatross proves the point. They certainly enjoyed an extremely successful reception at both the AIS and Cologne furniture shows and they have gone on to attract impressive sales amongst that sector of the sofa and recliner market who are looking for design concepts reflecting their more style-conscious attitudes to interior decor. ‘Historically the UK has appreciated himolla’s more traditional designs – not to mention the inherent quality and comfort of our products. Customers can rest assured that these latter attributes will never be compromised, but now there is a general shift in preferences towards European-style modernity, so our sales appeal is being enhanced by the infusion of fresh ideas, clean, sleek lines and a new range of classy fabrics and leathers from the Continent’s most inspired designers.’ And himolla is not resting there. technology and innovation – ‘furniture that does something’ – adding to its commercial appeal on the sales floor. Swan and Cygnet, for example, feature seat backs that pull down to become table tops, resting on the middle seats. Like Albatross, these ranges are available in both fabric and leather. The company has also taken note of the increase in demand for soft cover versions of its products by introducing four new fabric collections and offering Aquaclean options. ‘Accent pieces – individual recliners as opposed to sofa and chair sets – are
also an important part of the shift in consumer attitudes. We’re responding with contemporary, solid colours that are more in keeping with today’s desire for cleaner, less fussy interiors. ‘Technology plays its part too. Recently sales of powered recliners have tripled compared to previous levels, reflecting the consumer perception that powered chairs are not disproportionately more expensive than manually operated versions. The future is electric,’ adds Davies. Visit: www.himolla-uk.co.uk

‘In this gabbeh rug, the designer has pared down peacock feathers to minimal geometric lines hidden in the vertical bands of the design. The “eyes” on the tail feathers symbolise the vault of heaven and the eyes of the stars in ancient mythology.’
‘This fresh, minimal design delivers warmth, colour and true character. Accented by roughly drawn lines, the 100% wool rug is a tonal field of colour featuring a coarse weave that reflects the aesthetic of the Berber weaving tradition.’
‘Greha is inspired by a celestial phenomenon where multiple planetary bodies come together, forming an eclipse or an impression of superimposing identities. This atmospheric design is hand-knotted in naturally dyed silk and hand-carded wool.’

Reggae, Wool & Silk
‘With its complex design of verticals and its artistic aesthetic created in a subtle palette, this hand-knotted wool and silk rug could be used either as a neutral foundation for an otherwise busy room or as a featured artwork for the floor.’
‘A misfit of shapes, the design is an amalgamation of multiple identities and decisions. Decisions stack up and create a puzzle that remains to be solved. Wool and silk design Raasta is inspired by the puzzle of everyday decisions.’
‘Making lines follow what you want them to do in a hand-knotted rug is no easy feat, so this remarkable technical achievement was seen to be a wonderful, complex story about line drawing.’
BEST TRANSITIONAL DESIGN Jewel, Choudhary ‘Inspired by Persian Tabriz rugs and their signature sickle leaf pattern, this design is an interpretation of a bygone era. It features fresh colours and a beautiful texture, which is created by a wool and silk blend and a wash that erodes the wool.’

Ghom Copper, Hossein Rezvani ‘The Iranian city of Ghom is world-renowned for its fine silk rugs, reflected here in this design by Iranian weavers. Depicting a traditional Persian design, the 65% silk makes the intricate pattern shimmer in the light.’

Interfloor has updated Soundseal
For the past three decades Interfloor has offered its Decibel products as stock solutions to various acoustic problems. It has a range of noise-reducing products that are designed to be embedded within the subfloor. The Decibel mats are made of synthetic rubber with a special cell structure that gives them their unique characteristics that improve most acoustic challenges. Now the company has begun to focus more on a package solution: Decibel Concept. It says that customers should not merely buy a product but buy the security of a package solution. The company aims to show its customers a true picture of what its Decibel products can achieve. It says that a reading from an individual test
on impact sound reduction for the product will be stated, but that reading will not be the same in another customer’s specific construction. This is why it normally offers cost-free calculations where Decibel products’ characteristics are combined with the specific construction resulting in a more precise outcome. Decibel Soundseal is the company’s most efficient construction, which integrates the decibel mat in the floor construction, paving it with screed. The construction offers great flexibility to the property since the choice of flooring material and application method do not affect the acoustic circumstances of the floor construction. Since introducing Soundseal it has recommended folding up the carpet
along the walls and taping the joints before pouring the screed. Now it has advanced this with new edging and joining tape. Decibel-Edging is designed to minimise the number of stages during the installation and to guarantee the construction. It is made from polythene plastic, 8mm x 90mm, and is supplied on 25m rolls. The back has a double-side tape for easy installation on to the wall. After the Decibel mat is pressed against the wall, a plastic film is folded down towards the mat and is sealed with a pre-assembled tape. Once the screed has been applied, the edging surplus is easily torn off as the upper part is supplied with stilts. Visit: www.interfloor.com

Radici Group showed it latest capabilities Radici Group launched its Product Range Options catalogue with its newest yarn collections including PA 6 and PA 66 BCF yarns – for both residential and contract applications – meeting the market’s quest for products capable of giving carpet a rich look and a soft-touch feel. ‘With years of experience under our belt and a proven ability to develop yarns with excellent performance features, we started working on making our yarns more pleasing to the eye and softer to the touch, as well as creating solution-dyed yarns in brilliant colours to satisfy the most diverse aesthetic needs of today’s designers,’ said Arturo Andreoni, Radici Group Performance Yarn marketing director.

Radici used its Radifloor Residential BCF PA66 1100 F 256 x2 Bright-Dull HS Superba on the floor of its stand: the same yarn chosen by Condor Carpets for one of its Domotex introductions. The group also showed tapestry made by its German customer Halbmond, which uses a new printing technology to reproduce evocative imagery on carpet: the raw material is a PA 6 raw yarn developed by Radici and particularly suited for high- definition, 3D-image printing with excellent colour rendering. ‘In the polyamide 6 BCF yarn segment we have adopted a strategy focused on optimising products with the attributes most sought after by European carpet makers and taking into consideration the new printing technologies available. As for PA 66 yarn, a more demanding market from a performance point of view, we have enlarged our portfolio of soft yarns. Let us not forget that, today, Radici Group is the only European manufacturer capable of producing both nylon 6 and nylon 66 yarns, owing to our vertical integration in the chemicals business – a plus appreciated by the market,’ said Andreoni. Another new product at Radici Group Performance Yarn is Radifloor Stanèt, a PA 6 specialty yarn available in a variety of colours and endowed with embedded stain resistance characteristics. Carpeting made with Radifloor Stanèt is easier to maintain: stains can be removed with
water alone – there is no need for aggressive chemicals. The RadiciGroup Performance Yarn production chain is fully certified: the group’s plants specialising in the manufacture and processing of BCF yarn (in Italy, RadiciFil in Casnigo, Bergamo, which also produces PA 6 polymers and in the Czech Republic, Logit Sro in Podborany) are certified to ISO 9001, 14001 and 50001 and OHSAS 18001. London Fabric Show, 4-5 March, Fulham
PREVIEW
The show features leading fabric suppliers
Home ground London Fabric Show will again return to Stamford Bridge On Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 March 2019, champion fabric producers and suppliers will again take over the executive boxes and suites of Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium for the London Fabric Show. The BFM organised show has become a firm diary fixture for UK upholstery and soft furnishing retailers and manufacturers. Featuring 38 high-end fabric producers from across Europe it includes eight highly regarded companies from the UK and 10 of the famed Flemish producers from Belgium. The latest signing is Turkish producer Teksium Tekstil. Producing over 5million metres of fabric annually it has been producing its quality jacquard, linen, chenille and viscose weaves and fabrics for more than 20 years and exports 75% of its production. Launching a new upholstery collection at London Fabric is Bill Beaumont Textiles, a major new signing for the show. With a history dating back to the Lancashire fabric mills of the 19th century, Bill Beaumont is a leading brand in the soft furnishings industry. The company is

headed up by Daniel Beaumont, eldest son of the former England rugby star Bill Beaumont and the sixth generation of the family to run the company. Excited to be making a return to upholstery fabrics, its new collection features 16 dedicated plains and semi plains – all of which meet contract specification – as well as dual-purpose accent fabrics. Fellow exhibitors from Lancashire include British Velvets and Art of the Loom. Art of the Loom is another textile company with a family tradition dating back to the 19th century. Proud of its British heritage, its focus is on natural fibres and it uses only cotton, wool, linen and viscose in its ranges. Known for its colourful and comprehensive collections its fabrics include everything from ticking tape to robust woollen plaid. Founded in 1932, British Velvets is the final remaining velvet weaver in the UK and a market leader in the textile industry. It produces more than 750 different luxury velvets for upholstery and soft furnishings in a variety of weights and widths, and as
well as supplying a healthy UK market exports to Europe and worldwide. The renowned Flemish manufacturers are favourites among the many regular London Fabric Show exhibitors: Annabel, Tavelmo and Van Neder are just a few of the Belgian companies making a welcome return with their superior jacquards, linens and chenilles in both traditional and modern designs. Fabric treatments are an important element of the show and Aquaclean is a leading brand in every kind of fire retardant and water resistant treatment, as well as producing its own extensive collections of fabrics. The show has added to its sponsors, with Occupation Awards and Lancashire Testing Services joining Flanders Investment and Trade Agency, Fedustria (Federation of the Belgian Textile, Woodworking & Furniture Industry), Aquaclean Group, CPS Group, Orbital Vision, Lectra and Welters Organisation Worldwide.
