EDITOR’S COMMENT

New decade – same issues We may have entered a new decade but issues that affected retailers in 2019 are still with us As I write this MPs have just passed Boris Johnson’s Brexit bill for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January. Uncertainty over Brexit hit consumer confidence as shoppers waited to see what was going to happen. Now that that particular hurdle has been overcome, retailers will be hoping that people will now have the certainty to return to making big-ticket purchases. But attention will now switch to how the trade deal talks are going, and the fear that we could still end up with a hard Brexit if a deal is not agreed. This is still likely to cause some to hold back on spending, even those completely fed up with the whole thing. The new government has said that it wants to tackle business rates to help high streets. The Conservative manifesto outlined plans to reduce the rates burden by £320m in the 2020-21 financial year, by extending a retail discount from 33% to 50% for businesses with a rateable value below £51,000. However, property company Altus Group has pointed out that, for the three following years, it said it will only reduce total tax receipts by £10m each year. This compares to a business rates yield of more than £33bn for each year from 2021-22, meaning the rates cut will only reduce the burden by 0.03%, according to Altus. ‘The commitment to lower the burden as part of a wider review is an acknowledgement that the standard rate of tax, at its highest level since 1990, at over 50%, is a major issue for business across all sectors of the economy,’ says Robert Hayton, Altus head of business rates. ‘However, the promised cut of around 0.03% from April 2021, whilst a start, will need to go much further and deeper to have a meaningful impact.’ As Mike Ashley said in December, MPs must act before it is really too late for the high street.

Carpetright shareholders back Meditor takeover Carpetright shareholders have backed the £15.2m takeover of the group by its largest shareholder and owner of its borrowings. Just under 75% of shares were voted in favour of the deal, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year. Several major shareholders had previously committed to the takeover by Meditor, and the Carpetright board had recommended the move, warning that the group needed to raise £80m.

Moore to host environmental awards

Bensons for Beds has recruited sleep scientist Dr Sophie Bostock as its sleep expert. Bostock has spent the last six years researching and championing the importance of sleep science in NHS and corporate settings. She was responsible for improving access to award-winning digital sleep improvement programme Sleepio and has delivered hundreds of talks, including for TEDx and Google. ‘We are delighted to welcome Sophie to the team. She is as passionate as we are about educating people on the importance of Sleep Wellness and we look forward to working with her on a number of exciting projects this year,’ says Helen Nunn, Bensons for Beds marketing director.

Former England and British and Irish Lions rugby union star turned commentator Brian Moore will host the ninth Recofloor awards on 25 March, which will take place at Twickenham. He will present trophies and certificates to members of Polyflor and Altro’s national take-back scheme who have excelled across a variety of award categories. Recofloor’s 700-plus members have helped to divert nearly 5,000 tonnes from landfill since 2009. ‘We’re on the look-out for interesting, innovative and inspiring applications of how Recofloor has made a difference on all types of projects, large and small.

‘Every year, our award event turns the focus on the great work undertaken by our members to collect recyclable vinyl flooring for reuse in new products. It takes ongoing effort and commitment to increase tonnages year-on-year and that’s why we want to hear about and recognise your success,’ says Richard McKinlay, Recofloor scheme manager.

Reality for Wren Wren Kitchens’ latest TV advertising campaign features the kitchens of 14 of its customers. The country’s largest kitchen retailer is promoting its design service. It opens with a young couple having the family round for Sunday roast, and captures the mother in law’s envious expression as she watches the slideand-hide oven door glide out of sight. It simply states: ‘With Wren, you get more than just a slide-and-hide oven…you get a jealous mother-in-law too.’ It follows with a further four scenarios including a stroppy teenager storming out of a room slamming the kitchen drawer – which shuts quietly thanks to

Positive news for Dunelm investors Dunelm has told shareholders it expects to see higher profits than forecast. ‘We have successfully transitioned all of our customers to our new digital platform. We now have a modern, flexible, cloud-native platform that will be used to accelerate the development of our customer proposition. ‘Customers have responded well to the new website and we are delighted that during this critical transition period we did not see any adverse impact to our performance, maintaining our strong

sales growth both online and in stores,’ it says. ‘Gross margins have been stronger than expected as a result of sourcing gains and better sell-through. Operational costs remain well controlled and in line with our expectations. ‘In light of the above, the board now anticipates that the full year profit before tax will be higher than our previous expectations, assuming no significant change in consumer demand as a result of the outcome of the general election.’

Showroom for Bedeck as flagship sees facelift Homewares company Bedeck has opened a trade showroom on the site where the company was founded and has revamped its flagship store. The 5,000sqft custom-built space was designed out of a growing need for more space and features a dedicated presentation area for 25 beds to showcase new seasonal

own brand ranges, Bedeck of Belfast and Murmur. The new showroom also features a design archive to house its extensive artwork portfolio. Despite its size, Bedeck is one of the last remaining bedlinen providers which still has its own in-house textile design studio, which uses traditional crafts such as

painting, block-printing and weaving. ‘We are thrilled to be opening the new showroom on the same plot where our grandfather started the business 68 years ago. The business has organically

evolved from selling handkerchiefs to become a global home textiles expert, and this new space marks a new chapter in the history of the company,’ says Gary Irwin, Bedeck joint md. Its Lisburn Road, Belfast store has undergone a thorough refit, re-designed to feature new larger areas for Bedeck of Belfast and Murmur both developed with a third-party product offer to complement and enhance the brands. The refit also showcases further brands from the Bedeck portfolio with a substantial bed, bath and homeware offering. ‘The investment across our retail stores comes out of the need to continue to inspire our customers. We want to create a friendly and pleasant environment for both staff and customers and ensure they have a positive shopping experience. As a business, we feel it is important to constantly evolve and refine our stores to stay relevant within the current pressurised retail environment,’ says Andrew Irwin, Bedeck joint md.

‘Green shoots of recovery’ at HoF Sport Direct is ‘starting to see the green shoots of recovery,’ at House of Fraser, according to the group’s chairman David Daly. ‘We are bringing new disciplines, experience and skills to bear which is helping the turnaround. Our Fraser’s strategy is to create a superior shopping experience for the consumer which will be led by the original Fraser’s. In the coming months and years, Fraser’s will prove to be a vital and successful part of the group,’ he says. However, Mike Ashley, Sports Direct chief executive has warned that some stores will close as even without paying rent they are unprofitable. ‘During this calendar year we have been integrating House of Fraser into the Sports Direct Group and it is safe to say an awful lot of work has been done by many people of all levels to bring what was an unmitigated disaster into a functioning state. ‘We now have the support services including IT, warehouse and logistics fully integrated and hope that this is a solid base to build on. The management, buying, retailing, financial and other departments and functions are integrated and aligned with the rest of the group and running as one business. ‘We are doing as much as we can to save as many jobs and stores as possible, however, despite our best efforts, there are still a number of stores that are paying zero rent and are unprofitable and thus not sustainable. We are continuing to review the longer term portfolio and would expect the number of retained stores to continue to reduce in the next 12 months.’

Business rates appeals jump The number of businesses waiting for challenges over increased business rates to be resolved has risen by more than a third in three months, according to new figures. Data from the Valuation Office Agency shows that 118,390 non-domestic properties in England have started the process to appeal business rate bills since revaluations came into effect on 1 April 2017. On 20 September some 12,580 non-domestic sites were waiting for challenges against business rates to be addressed, up 35% from 9,260 at the end of June 2019. ‘If more challenges continue to be received than resolved and the settlement rate does not significantly improve, then this situation will become chronic,’ says Alex Probyn, president of UK expert services at ratings advisory company Altus Group. ‘It will also mean that far too many cases will clog up the independent valuation tribunal system, which is exactly what the new system was designed to circumvent.’ The British Retail Consortium says companies could be owed £1.4bn over the five years to 2022 through the appeals process.

Beales looks to secure funding Department store chain Beales has put itself up for sale as it looks to secure funding to ‘deliver a sustainable business model.’ The 138-year old chain has 22 stores with 1,300 employees and a further 300 concession staff. It says it has hired KPMG to begin a strategic and financial review as the business ‘continues to acclimatise to the ever-changing landscape and challenges of the retail market.’

A revamp of ranges towards the start of last year had brought ‘significant sales improvements’, and it also wants to look at buying sites to expand a format that has seen early successes in its new Fareham branch. Anthony Brown, Beales chief executive bought the company from Andrew Perloff, chairman of property firm Panther Securities, and owner of Airpsrung in October 2018.

Settlement for copycat bedding Soft furnishing brand Portfolio Home has won a copying dispute over its bestselling Orkney bedlinen. The brand’s owner Bridstock Gate issued proceedings in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court demanding undertakings to discontinue the importation and sale of the infringing product, delivery up of residual stock and payment of compensation and costs. On the morning of the trial the defendant agreed to settle. It [the defendant cannot be named as part of the agreement] agreed the

inquiry to assess payment of damages and costs. ‘We are delighted to have been of assistance to Bridstock Gate in achieving settlement of this dispute. The ability to bring proceedings in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court gives clients who create original designs the opportunity to protect their innovative work without fear of plagiarism. The protection of original designs is essential to justify the cost and effort put in to the creation of new products,’ says Tony Catterall, lawyer at Taylors. ‘We are delighted by the outcome achieved as a result of this action. We take a great pride in the innovative nature of our products and invest heavily in the design of original textile ranges that distinguish us from others in the market. ‘It is essential that we protect the integrity of our designs and I am delighted that Taylors have achieved a more than satisfactory settlement on our behalf,’ says Paul Callan, Bridstock Gate md.

Resolution matters Problems are opportunities in disguise It was going to be the biggest and best walk-in wardrobe that we’d ever sold. The customer had come into the shop with the plans for his barn conversion. The en-suite bathroom was to be accessed through another room, which was to be lined with wardrobes and shelving from a top German manufacturer, all made to measure including the veneered ceiling panels with integrated lighting that would come on when the door opened. This was properly bespoke, with the veneers bookmatched on all surfaces. The customer knew it would have a long production time so wanted to order at the earliest possible opportunity so it would be ready as soon as the builders had finished. I’d not long finished my furnituremaking degree and so I had no difficulty working from the scale drawings, costing the units item by item, and dealing with all the customer’s queries to ensure this would meet his vision. When the delivery confirmation was received I marked the date in the office diary so I would be free to install everything to avoid any

additional delays. We even arranged for the delivery to go directly to the house. The two adjoining walls of units were soon assembled and in place, then the opposite wall. I unpacked the ceiling panels and checked the size. They were 18mm too wide. I checked again. The panels were the size they were meant to be, it was the room that was too small. I checked the measurements and then the plan: the difference was the thickness of the plaster skim that had been added to the dry-lined walls and which was not shown on the building specification. Whose problem and/or fault was that? An inquiry would have distressed the customer whatever the outcome. Although it added two hours to the job, I proceeded to cut each ceiling panel down, without leaving any jagged edges on the veneer (hint: score it first and cut so the blade cuts towards the face of the veneer, not away from it) and to reposition all the connecting brackets and holes until the room was finished. The customer came to check on progress as I was doing the alterations

and I explained the solution I was working on. He cursed the builder (clearly not for the first time) and thanked me for dealing with the issue so effectively. We were both delighted with the result. Three months later I was approached by another gentleman asking about walk-in wardrobes. He lived in Portugal and in due course I went to install one for him into a bedroom extension he had commissioned solely to accommodate it. In fact this time I dictated to his builders exactly what size to make it. He was the brother-in-law of the first customer and was impressed with the product, and with the service and problem-solving that had been provided. It gave him confidence to place the order even though it was for export and could have been fraught with complications. Problems are opportunities in disguise: it’s how you resolve them that makes the difference. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

Influences from across the globe have been combined in Habitat’s SS 2020 collection ‘Our design stories this season have been inspired by the travels of our in-house design studio, absorbing the surroundings of different habitats and lifestyles from across the globe. From traditional rattan workshops in Vietnam to ceramics gardens in Thailand and textile houses in India, this collection is a mix of traditional global craft meeting modern British design. ‘There are more than 250 individual products in our collection, each with their own design story, created for

DESIGN STORY 1 DERWENT FOUR-POSTER BED FRAME, designed by Matthew Long ‘We’ve stripped the archetypal, ornate four-poster bed frame right back to a very pure Habitat take on a bedroom design classic. The structure is made from solid oiled oak to showcase a beautiful woodgrain, warm and relaxing for a bedroom, and will complement many different bedlinen styles. Like a traditional four-poster, this is about creating a statement in the bedroom but its slender linear framework isn’t ostentatious and its discreet under-bed drawers provide ample storage,’ says Long.

2 SURA RATTAN CHAISE, designed by Matthew Long ‘Sura is a homage to the rattan designs from the mid-century era, an architectural piece that is meant to be given space and appreciated for its form. I wanted to design a chaise that showcased the fluidity that rattan allows us as a material but still has obvious manipulated, structured form instead of it becoming an overtly curvaceous, organic design. The skinny black metal legs add to this sense of structure, the chaise appearing to float and its simple, natural finish emphasising the material and allowing you to add pattern and colour through textiles,’ says Long. MOORE FLOOR LAMP, designed by James Cottingham ‘I created Moore to stand alone as a sculptural artwork within a room, an oversized statement piece with zigzags of black metal wire which play with light and shadow on the surrounding environment,’ says Cottingham. Moore black metal floor lamp £220; Sura handwoven rattan chaise £395; Malibu cushion (50cm x 50cm) £55; Malibu rug (160cm x 230cm) £350; Brodi tray side table £95; Utah vase £25 

Materials, colour and forms which feel relevant and brave translate a diverse range of ideas curated from different cultures and traditions, built around a central Habitat colour palette that allows these different aesthetics to work seamlessly together in the same space or as stand-alone statement pieces,’ says Kate Butler, Habitat head of design. 3 EMILIO VELVET SOFA, designed by Matthew Long ‘Emilio’s elegant, angular silhouette is topped with an obvious quilted duvet cushioning on both arms and back that epitomises sophisticated relaxation. This is a “cocoon” sofa created for how we use living rooms today – Netflix binging, socialising, family lounging, escapism. We’ve also introduced new fabric variants to the collection this year with new colours including blush pink, moss green and ink blue velvets,’ says Long. 4 SHELF FLOOR LAMP, designed by Matthew Long ‘Shelf is statement lighting piece and storage solution within the same small footprint. Its modern industrial framework is to frame pieces displayed on the shelves below and it works perfectly next to an armchair or sofa as a side table. The black, skinny frame also allows the eye to see through, giving a sense of more space – and the shades are interchangeable for customisation,’ says Long. 5 CARL ARMCHAIR ‘The mid-century attitude towards simple, functional furniture design is still a central mantra of our design studio. Carl brings a new aesthetic to our armchair collection. The striking angular walnut framework is a nod to the mid-century school of architecture, with black leather upholstery adding a masculine feel,’ says Long. 6 DINNERWARE ‘Our hand-finished ceramics from Portugal continue to lead the trend in tabletop as customers opt for more Insta-worthy statement dinner and serveware. Reactive glazes, hand-turned shapes and hand-painted patterns mean that each ceramic piece is unique. New for this season, Sicilia in a striking monochrome hand-painted spot is for the extrovert, while Sunny with its yellow rim is the ideal for those wanting to keep within the lines,’ says Butler. 7 and 8 KIRBY COLLECTION by James Cottingham ‘Democratic design has always been a fundamental part of our DNA since 1964 and this season we’ve evolved our edit of sophisticated, statement design pieces for when budget isn’t as big as the idea. Habitat designer James Cottingham’s Kirby furniture collection (starting from £50) brings a Scandi, minimalist vibe working easily into modern interiors, with a pop of bright red metal giving a playful attitude. New in-house designed cushions (starting from £15) bring pops of colour and pattern and new patterned side tables (starting from £50) again introduce modern interior fun. We’ve expanded our rug offering too with striped flatweaves in bright, youthful colours (starting at £15 for 60cm x 90cm size and £50 for 120cm x 180cm size) – ideal for quick, colourful updates to a space,’ says Butler. Top right: Fisola black and white rug (120cm x 180cm) £50; Coleman nickel ceiling light £70; Kirby red metal frame table £95 and chair £50; Daria orange textured vase £25; Raya black and white rug (60cm x 90cm) £15 Right: Kirby red metal frame desk £150; Tate flatweave rug (140cm x 200cm) £70 

MATERIAL STORY 9 RATTAN ‘Rattan’s lightweight, durable, pliable and sustainable qualities make it one of our favourite materials to use in the design studio, allowing us to create more unusual 3D forms and design pieces with an obvious hand-crafted and natural aesthetic. This season’s treatment of interwoven black and natural stripes shows rattan being used in a more modern, graphic way,’ says Butler. Brodi grey gloss side table £95; Judd smoked glass and brass table lamp £90; Nina three-seater button sofa bed £1,800; Fisola cushions (45cm x 45cm) £25 each; Flokati cushion (50cm x 50cm) £50; Moore metal ceiling pendant £195; Mohan flatweave rug (160cm x 230cm) £170; Indah rattan hand-woven round coffee table £180; Indah rattan hand-woven oval coffee table £195

PATTERN STORY

11

10 RIAD, designed by Martha Coates ‘Our main pattern story for SS 2020 started with the idea of bringing bright sunshine vibes into interiors. For this we developed colour and pattern reminiscent of warmer climates – golden yellow sun, coral sunsets, earthy tan pigments, palm green and azure blue sea and sky. We’ve also taken traditional kilim patterns and made these contemporary through use of colour and scale of pattern. Used across both our indoor and outdoor designs, this gives a continuity across both collections, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor,’ says Coates. Ade tufted rug (120cm x 180cm) £95 (rolled up); Mohan flatweave rug (160cm x 230cm) £170 (rolled up); Rosa embroidered grey circle cushion £25; Nik rattan easy-fit shade £95; Sura handwoven rattan chaise £395; Rosa embroidered circle cushion (40cm x 40cm) £25; zig-zag cushions (45cm x 45cm) £25 each; Malibu rug (160cm x 230cm) £350; Fisola flatweave black and white rug (120cm x 180cm) £50

11 ZIG-ZAG ‘We use zig-zags and triangles a lot in our pattern design at Habitat as the sharpness of the shape feels relevant and modern. They can be kept very simple or made into quite complicated pattern that evolves the longer you look at it. I like taking references from tribal sources and re-interpreting these in contemporary ways – using an unusual colour palette or a different artistic method to give a more abstract edge. For our ceramics and textiles this season we’ve been experimenting with a mixture of very sharp, perfect zig-zag shapes combined with looser hand-created versions which we’ve then translated through painting and block printing, creating some really interesting results.’ Tate flatweave rug (140cm x 200cm) £70; Fisola cushion (45cm x 45cm) £25 (inset)

12 SYMBOLS ‘A continuation of the figurative and abstract patterns that ran through our SS 19 and AW 19 collections: moving away from references to the human body, this season is a mixture of cut-out shapes used as symbols and references to objects and plants. A soft palette of mustard, celadon blue, ink blue and forest green gives a minimalist feel.’

Expression

John Lewis has four trends for SS 2020 NEW ECLECTICS Decorative, bold and confident, the New Eclectics collection embraces colour and pattern to deliver an eye-catching look for the new season. Perfect for colour enthusiasts who love to decorate mixing styles and pattern, the palette offers a freedom to express individuality and create a real personality for any room. Featuring the return of classical style icons including the slipper chair, chaise longue and pleated lampshade, this nostalgic nod provides a strong sense of welcoming. Creating a link to heirlooms, pieces from our travels and experiences that hold meaning or memory, it’s a look that very much helps us to feel human and in the moment. Framed around two hero shades, jadeite and pomegranate, the look can be dialled down by incorporating smaller pieces and layers of textiles, or fully embraced with a maximalist approach by mixing patterns with clashing colourways and textured finishes to build a highly personalised setting. ‘Our New Eclectics trend mixes rich, vibrant and intense hues with warm earthy tones to create a mood boosting, decorative style. Beautiful woven details and intricate embroidery reflect influences garnered from travel,

exploration and culture. Being such a bold statement, this look particularly suits a curated approach to styling. Select the colour of the largest area, such as a wall or sofa, then choose three shades that work well with it and layer clashing prints and patterns. Building from the base up will give the area a sense of cohesive colour purpose,’ says Melanie Archer, John Lewis colour designer. 1 Refine sofa in elegant velvet mustard from £1,299; Kuva cushion in jadeite £45; Zebra cushion in pomegranate £60; Box stripe cushion in paprika £40; West Elm streamline coffee table £599; Conic five-head floor lamp £225; marble beaded pedestal side table £199; Berber Aztec green rug £525; Berber Ikat multi rug £525; John Lewis + Spode Zoology Gardens cup and saucer £35; John Lewis + Spode Zoology Gardens teapot £100; tumbler in amaranth pink £5; Galeries Maeght Calder framed print £125; Galeries Maeght Kelly print £175; Picasso War and Peace print £195; JVG Rogue One rings £10; Henri Matisse Figure de Dos £175 2 Lounge chair in Ampana print £499; Ultra alcove shelving unit £599; Galeries Maeght Hantai framed poster £125; John Lewis + Swoon Raine marble side table £179; Poole Pottery Maya Purse vase (top shelf ) £90; green black rim bowl £12; Sultans Garden boxed teapot £75; blue coral £50; teal drip vase £50; Berber Ikat rug £525 

URBAN LUXE Designed for customers with an eye for detail, Urban Luxe is refined yet inviting; combining contemporary design, bold shades and luxurious finishes which depict a continued desire for spaces to entertain and express ourselves. Created for those with a passion for style, quality and innovation, a succinct palette offering complementary combinations is balanced by reflections of metal and glass. Burnt oranges and deep greens are complemented by velvets, warm timbers and black accents for a sophisticated and modern look. Moving on from the grooved furniture seen in Autumn/Winter, the shape becomes more pronounced for Spring/Summer to a statement three-dimensional ridging, as seen in the Fluted Glass collection. ‘Creating a scheme that feels considered and cohesive relies on choosing pieces of furniture that work harmoniously with the room’s design but also offer something distinctive. Whether it’s a fashionable feature, innovative use of material or unusual colour combination, investing in anchor pieces that a scheme can be built around is an effective way to create a trend-led interior. Well-crafted investment pieces will stand the test of time and can become the design classics of tomorrow,’ says David Barrett, John Lewis living and dining buyer.

SPRING RENEWAL Centred around creating calm, Spring Renewal is a response to our increasing need to reclaim our natural rhythms, connect to the natural world and consider our wellbeing. This collection utilises understated, earthy tones to create a restorative and relaxing retreat. As we become more mindful of what we eat, how we exercise and relax, we understand that our environment plays a significant part in affecting our mindset. By creating a look that layers natural materials and champions craftsmanship, Spring Renewal forges a textural landscape crying out to be touched. Ceramic glazes, soft watery patterns and woven baskets build this look into something rich yet tranquil, whilst last season’s sell-out rattan furniture returns with a wider selection and new timber finishes. Key to this trend, the Aura mural evolved from a mixed media original artwork by John Lewis designer Naomi Barber. The digitally printed piece captures the original painting’s distinct brush marks and soft tones, inspired by meadow flowers across the horizon on a hazy summer day. ‘With our commitment to creating responsible products, we are constantly looking for ways to use sustainable materials within our collections. Considering provenance, craftsmanship and the ability to reuse is a concern. Last season’s launch of the Natural Collection mattresses and fabric covers made from recycled fibres was a significant step and for SS 2020 we will introduce our first foam-free sofa, the Java II. This, together with providing the not-forprofit service to collect and recycle or reuse old mattresses and sofas reassures our customers that their old products are being reused or disposed of responsibly and not simply ending up in landfill,’ says Elizabeth Sladen, John Lewis upholstery buyer. 5 Rattan bed in black (double) £599; rattan one-drawer bedside table in oak £199; Aura mural bedding (double) £70; Chelsea Stripe pink duvet cover set (double) £60; Fusion natural seagrass basket £20; rattan dressing table stool in black £125; plain wool throw in burnt orange £80; Picasso War and Peace print £195; washed linen slot-top voile panel in light green £35; Nordlux Design for the People strap floor lamp in black £240

HOUSE Vibrant and uplifting, this season’s House collection injects a sense of fun into the home. Mirroring the move in fashion towards curating a carefree, vibrant style, the collection offers customers freedom and choice. Filled with pattern, stripes and vivid shades the new pieces lend themselves to a mix and match approach to decorating. Developed in-house quality, flexibility and innovation are at the heart of the House collection. Contemporary in nature each piece has been designed to reflect the demands of modern housing. Furniture with a small footprint and clever storage solutions is key, mixing form and function to deliver value and style. ‘Print, pattern and colour are essential this season. Our eye-catching diagonal stripe wallpaper will add personality to a space, whether it’s used across an entire room or a single wall. Try it in a typically neglected space such as the hallway or by the stairs, to add interest and create a focal point. Be bold and creative with House: layer colour with patterns and mix prints and motifs that spark joy and bring a smile to your face. Your home is a reflection of you, so make it a place you love to be,’ says Fionnuala Johnston, John Lewis senior designer. 7 Diagonal stripe wallpaper £30 per roll; upholstered Bonn bed (double) £199; yellow rug £85; Wiggle throw in chilli £35; Tiger duvet cover set (double) £35; diagonal stripe duvet cover set in mineral (double) £35; Jersey cushion in steel £5; Jax small side table in mustard £59; Marcus Walters Bauen/Aufbau unframed prints in pink/multi £10 each; Jax large side table in pink £69; table lamp £20 8 Show-Wood sofa bed in topaz light grey (light leg) £749; chunky knit pouffe in plaster £75; waffle throw in citrine/ grey £30; Tiger cushion £20; Build cushion in multicolour £20; boucle stripe cushion in mauve/lime £15; stripe cushion in mineral/dusty green £12; stripe cushion in mauve/lime £12; boucle stripe cushion in mineral/dusty green £15

Perfect number Argos has six themes for SS 2020

‘The way we live is changing, with house-sharing, renting and small space living becoming more prevalent than ever. Homes, and especially living areas within them, are now multifunctional; spaces that need to suit anything from family time to working from home to hosting friends for dinner. This season, our design and buying teams have focused on the growing need for affordable, flexible living solutions, evolving our collections of furniture, lighting and accessories for everyday living,’ says Emma Benjafield, Argos head of furniture buying. ‘We’ve also seen outdoor spaces become an extension of the home, treated with as much significance and personality as our interiors. This year’s outdoor collections offer a wider variety of

styles than ever before, whether intended to create a cosy retreat on an urban balcony or a welcoming dining space to entertain family and friends. ‘The Scandi-inspired collection is a season highlight, with multiple storage solutions for compact and flexible living. For our glam customers, our Boutique range of furniture continues to expand, with rose gold and mirrored occasional tables as well as a sumptuous velvet bed with luxurious tufted headboard. ‘For 2020, we expect to see our customers embracing bold colours more keenly than ever, so we’re launching spectacular new additions to our velvet upholstery including ochre, shiraz and teal,’ adds Benjafield. OUTDOOR As the months become warmer, entertaining at home shifts to the outdoors as an alternative to the living room. With outdoor spaces now seen as an extension of the home, the collection allows your style to extend beyond an interior setting – from new pieces such as the bistro dining set for two through to larger lounge collections. Accessorise the al fresco setting with solar lighting that stays bright all year long, and with cushions and pouffes for additional comfort, specially designed to withstand rain and wind.

There is plenty of room for meetings

A decade after it first opened, Associated Weavers has transformed its Ronse, Belgium showroom. Located at the company’s head office, it has undergone a complete revamp and become more of an experience centre than a showroom. It includes a central display area for its standard carpet ranges and dedicated areas for its iSense, Invictus, Vivendi and Sedna brands, along with a separate room for its LVT offer. Also on display is its new Maverick contract collection of eight ranges. Display screens allow visitors to watch films on carpet production and company information, and can also be used to show information about the different ranges. An experience centre app has been designed to optimise visits to the showroom, which allows the sales team to guide visitors through the collection and offer personalised advice. The sales manager creates a session in the name of the visitor and preselects ranges they think will be of interest. The

physical displays can be pulled out to highlight those ranges and then added as favourites in the app, which allows the technical information, room shots and

all the colour options to be shown on the big screen. This information can then be emailed to the retailer. Visit: www.carpetyourlife.co.uk

Sense of style

Karndean Designflooring Art Select Hickory Peppercorn

Karndean Designflooring has collaborated with Anna’s Attic Karndean Designflooring has partnered with interior designer and blogger Anna Shaw of Anna’s Attic as part of her master bedroom and en-suite makeover. Having moved to her converted barn 18 months ago, Shaw has been renovating different areas of her home to achieve her own sense of style. Inspired by her favourite Chinese silk mural, she has created an oriental style

retreat with muted natural colours and luxurious fabrics and a warm hickory design floor to complement her treasured antique furniture. ‘I sourced a stunning mural featuring Chinese flora, forna, birds and butterflies, which was the starting point of the scheme. The mural is such a statement that I wanted the rest of the room and the adjoining en-suite to be calm and relaxing

and have a classic feel using natural tones and finishes. ‘In the bathroom we fitted a traditional‑style toilet, simple shower enclosure with white marble tiles and a counter-top basin on top of a vintage wooden cupboard. The look has been accessorised with vintage items and artwork.’ Being a lover of natural materials, Shaw had always aspired to achieve the look of wooden floorboards but without the drafts, noise or on-going maintenance associated with the real thing. ‘I longed for a classic dark wooden floor which would ground the scheme and fit perfectly with the age of our property. It was really important to me to be able to use the same flooring from the bedroom through into the en-suite, so I had to consider slippage and water resistance as well as it being warm underfoot. ‘We also have a dog, therefore it was important that whatever flooring we chose was super-durable and pet-friendly too. I sent for some samples of Karndean’s Handcrafted range: Hickory Peppercorn and Hickory Nutmeg. I loved them both but decided that the Hickory Peppercorn would offer the classic dark floorboard look to fit the scheme perfectly.’ Visit: www.karndean.com

Transformation The NBF has a new mission and a new look Britain’s bed industry is poised to enter a transformational era. As it does so, the National Bed Federation (NBF) unveils its new look and vision for a future in which it can guide members through the challenges ahead. Following an in-depth, six-month journey into understanding its identity, perceptions across the industry and the

road ahead, the NBF has a new look and sense of clarity about its role as the bed industry’s conscience. As a trade association at the forefront of industry challenges, the NBF is widely regarded as a body that has long seized the initiative, on everything from leading the way with flammability regulations in the 1980s to the launch of its groundbreaking Code of Practice in 2013. The 2020 rebrand represents a clarification of purpose which is about ‘ensuring the industry always does the right thing’. ‘The future is about transformational rather than just transitional change. With sustainability, end of life considerations and extended producer responsibility schemes now at the forefront of industry concerns, the NBF is working on how best to support members. And in doing so, we are once again taking the lead. We have just announced our partnership with Zero Waste Scotland and have been working with the Textile Recycling Association to establish RAMR – the Register of Approved Mattress Recyclers, which is due to launch soon,’ says Tony

Lisanti, NBF president. Underpinning its progress comes a new-look website with a focus on consumer education and impartial advice around bed buying. A new facility allows visitors to find their nearest retail supporter stocking predominantly NBF Approved brands. ‘Our role has changed significantly over the past five years. We are now the only trade association in the sector which independently audits its members and the only one to be developing a social and ethical programme of education training and regulatory compliance,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director ‘Going forward, being a member of the NBF will be about declaring a commitment to high standards, ethical business practices, production efficiencies, compliance and sustainability. ‘Increased credibility has always been a reason for companies to join the NBF. Now there is even more substance to membership: the NBF mark of approval really does mean something.’ Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Adjustable beds complete Mammoth’s 2020 collection Mammoth has launched its Move range to meet an increased demand for adjustable beds – completing its 2020 retail collection. With the ageing population continuing to grow in the UK, motion mobility has never been more important, and Mammoth is proud to use its expertise to help people of all ages and health achieve their best lives. The Move range helps to alleviate aches and pains and enables people to be more independent, comfortable and enjoy ample rest. There are many benefits to sleeping on an adjustable bed as it can offer numerous position choices to provide comfort for a better sleep experience. By achieving the perfect bed position, back pain can be alleviated and the circulation of blood and oxygen improved to enable people to fall asleep faster and end those nights of tossing and turning. An adjustable bed can help relieve painful conditions such as arthritis as the mattress can be positioned to take weight off problem areas to allow for a more comfortable rest. For people who suffer from morning stiffness, the

54

head can be raised and the foot lowered to work as an aid for getting in and out of bed more easily. An adjustable bed can also help reduce snoring, as the frame can lift the head to take weight off the windpipe. Other breathing problems such as sleep apnoea and asthma can be decreased by sleeping in a more angled position as it improves airflow, reducing obstructions from nasal passages to allow for healthier, uninterrupted sleep. Adjustable beds have the additional benefit of promoting an enhanced lifestyle: the bed can turn into an easyto-position recliner chair to help you sit up in bed, read and watch TV. It is also

the perfect aid for people with mobility problems as it can further independence and help them get in and out of bed without assistance. Move features Mammoth’s naturally cooling Medical Grade foam and PostureCell technologies and comes in three models: Move Essential, Move Plus and Move Advanced. Added features available include infra-red remote controls and a massage system. Mammoth is partnered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, and its NHS health award winning technologies are recommended by health professionals. Visit: www.mammothcomfort.com Move bed

Somnus has new branding Somnus is proud to be part of the Harrison Spinks family. From the natural mattress fillings grown on the Harrison Spinks farm, to the wire drawn at its factory in Leeds, its ethos stands for everything that’s great in traditional British manufacturing. A new branding direction is being introduced for Somnus that reinforces its position as part of the Harrison Spinks family, whilst ensuring the innovative, design-led identity of Somnus is retained. This new direction has been mirrored in the latest Somnus POS, being rolled out across independent retailers. West Yorkshire retailer The Carriage, of Burley-in-Wharfedale, has been one of the first to receive the updated branding. ‘I am delighted with the latest pieces of POS. They complement our existing Somnus graphics perfectly, strengthening the brand’s presence throughout the store. There is also greater visibility of the Harrison Spinks name, which I’ve found

56

Interiors Monthly January 2020

a great talking point with customers who saw BBC2’s Inside the Factory and were impressed by the process of making a Harrison Spinks mattress,’ says Vicky Golding, The Carriage md. As well as strengthening the brand through new POS, Somnus is building upon the success of Harrison Spinks’ first direct-to-consumer campaign which ran in 2019, with a dedicated Somnus brand activation advertising campaign. This will be implemented across both print and high-performing digital channels including PPC, display and social media. This will mirror the new Somnus by Harrison Spinks branding direction and will ultimately aim to drive consumers through to find their nearest Somnus stockist via a dedicated stockist locator on the website. This activity is designed to support independent Somnus retailers through the key winter sales period by encouraging consumers into stores. With new product developments and

plenty more projects in the pipeline, 2020 looks set to be an exciting year for Somnus. To help coordinate this activity, Somnus now benefits from dedicated marketing support. Visit: www.harrisonspinks.co.uk/somnus

levels of innovation. The Therapeutics range is the perfect example. However, we also continuously build frameworks simple for retailers to implement in order to achieve high sales within the category. Focus is key: lots of small improvements often lead to significant improvement in performance once compounded. Therefore, we know we can instantly increase sales for any retail partner,’ says Simon Zamet, Protect-A-Bed ceo. ‘Product innovation is only one small element of how we unlock greater sales for our partners. Another is our specialist sales training, which is vital to unlock sales potential. Our team is incredibly adaptive to support this in any retail environment. We support this training through a bespoke reward system via the Protect-ABed Platinum Club. Since its launch, the results have been excellent. Existing and new partners have joined and are benefiting from the focused approach to growing sales.’ ‘Our ability to upskill your team and increase your sales revenue by maximising every sales opportunity is well documented. Sleepeezee is taking action to reduce CO₂ emissions while delivering its beds

Sleepeezee is taking action to reduce CO2 emissions Sleepeezee has further strengthened its commitment to a reduction in the company’s carbon footprint by adding two new vehicles to its home delivery fleet fitted with cutting edge solar technology. The Trailar system consists of an ultra‑ thin solar film matting which is applied to the vehicle’s roof and connected to a smart charge controller that works in conjunction with the vehicle’s battery and alternator. The harvested natural energy is used to power all on-board ancillary equipment including tail lifts, heating and air-conditioning, thereby reducing fuel consumption and lowering CO2 emissions by up to 5%. ‘We’re always looking for innovative ways of delivering both cost savings and a positive environmental impact within our supply chain. When something comes along that combines the two,

62

Interiors Monthly January 2020

Sleepeezee is always very keen to make it work. That is why we chose to engage with Ryder in introducing Trailar’s solar technology onto our fleet,’ says Howard Wilson, Sleepeezee vice president, strategy and commerce. The Trailar solar film matting weighs just 2kg per sqm so has no impact on payload. Once fitted onto a vehicle, the Trailar solution works in any natural light and is designed to absorb and generate maximum energy as quickly and as efficiently as possible. The matting offers superior wind resistance and is flexible and resistant to vibration and impact. Sleepeezee, in partnership with Ryder, hase ordered two new 3.5‑tonne Luton box vans with tail lift as part of its dedicated fleet of more than 60 vehicles including 28‑tonne and 7.5‑tonne rigid vehicles and trailers that operate out of its factory in Strood, Kent as well as Ryder

locations in Oldbury, West Midlands, Sheffield and Tyldesley, Greater Manchester. The fleet moves over 5,000 Sleepeezee units per week from the Strood factory on a just-in-time basis to customers throughout the UK. Visit: www.sleepeezee.com

Mission

Luxury and comfort are Sonlevo’s aims For 30 years The Foam Company has been making foam products to deliver the advantages of its sleep benefits. Now, in just a few short months, its Sonlevo collection has begun stripping back the industry’s layers of complexity to offer up a technological leap in sleep. During this year’s Bed Show, The Foam Company launched Sonlevo with a mission to deliver two things: luxury and comfort. More importantly, it had approached this new challenge with decades of knowledge in foam technologies and a focus on tackling the two key areas to ensure we sleep well: supporting our bodies’ shape and balancing our sleep temperatures. ‘We were very pleased with the trade’s reaction to our new collection during the Bed Show. The launch of our new collection has surpassed our expectations with continued growth

64

Interiors Monthly January 2020

post-show, reaffirming our combined belief in the Avid technology we have developed,’ says Jon Baker, Sonlevo business development director. In testing, according to the company, Avid showed a four times greater increase in airflow over standard mattress foams. There are many factors to controlling

body temperature in sleep, some of which are the responsibility of the end user, such as are bed linen, duvet selection and room temperature. Yet for years bed manufacturers have played with ideas in an effort to reduce the temperature created by a moulding bed filling such as foam and memory foams. Halo

‘It’s a remarkable step forward. For 30 years we have been promoting the postural benefits of foam for the purposes of sleep and we’ll continue to do so. With the creation of Avid, we’ve developed a fantastic combination of benefits that deliver the consumer a clear message, and what we believe will be many years of quality sleep,’ says Baker. ‘As well as introducing our Avid foam into two mattress designs, we’ve also incorporated the technology into a collection of pocket sprung mattresses called Avid Duo, ensuring our customers

can offer their consumers defined levels of quality and a scalable offer to service a broad catchment. ‘To be a success, the collection must incorporate tangible sleep benefits but also give sales teams and ultimately the consumer a complete solution. We’ve ensured our Sonlevo brand comes packaged with a wide selection of bed bases offering multiple storage options, designer headboards and a tailored collection of fabric finishes.’ Sonlevo has secured partnerships with the Professional Footballers’ Duo 9000

Association and the Football Medicine and Performance Association. ‘Sonlevo inherently understands how important sleep is to our members. Correct posture support and ultimate comfort are paramount to achieving the best sleep and, as a consequence, the best performance the following day. We are very pleased that Sonlevo has been approved as a PFA commercial partner and look forward to offering the benefits of its mattresses to all PFA members,’ says George Berry, PFA commercial director. ‘We all know sleep has a direct effect on our daily lives and plays a vital role in the performance of athletes. We are very proud to partner with these two important associations in sport and are delighted that they share our belief in Sonlevo and the exceptional benefits that it offers,’ says Baker. ‘It’s vitally important that we continue to build trust in our products and manufacturing, through our dedicated teams inside and outside of the factory. Adding further recognition towards Sonlevo from these important organisations adds further confidence in our direction’. ‘The Bed Show marked the beginning of the Sonlevo collection and has simplified the buying process for people, strengthening our consumer proposition and offering our new technology across a broad range of price points. ‘Current and future plans are to continue to grow Sonlevo in the right ways with support through national consumer advertising, flexible POS options, in-store promotional activity and an easy to use consumer website with stockist locator. All backed up with the help of our ever-committed support teams. ‘We look forward to developing the brand with our current stockists and continuing to secure further key accounts in early 2020.’ Visit: www.sonlevo.com

Hypnos has partnered with Red Tractor

Hypnos is a brand that’s famed for providing the most comfortable beds in the world for homes, palaces and some of the most luxurious global hotel groups. As the first bedmaker in the world to achieve carbon neutrality, Hypnos is well placed to pioneer new ideas to develop eco-conscious, responsibly sourced ranges like the new Origins Collection. Origins, a range of six mattresses, has been welcomed by retailers due to its luxurious comfort but also its proven levels of traceability and ethical sourcing. As an advocate of using only sustainable, natural materials in its mattresses, Hypnos has partnered with Red Tractor, the UK’s biggest farm and

food standards scheme, to guarantee that the 100% British wool is traceable back to assured farms. This widely recognised standard and mark of trust is understood and valued by today’s consumers. Hypnos has also taken a different approach to wool buying, committing to both quantities and a fair price so that farmers can invest in a more sustainable and reliable future. This collaboration has meant focusing on all processes: from the farmer’s field to the small things that make a big difference to quality. For example, the stringent washing of the wool on the first day in clean water tanks, to ensure the cleanest wool, for it then to be made into beautifully soft and even layers. ‘Our ground-breaking Origins Collection is the latest step in our sustainability journey, having been foam free for over 10 years, making beds 100% recyclable

and sustainable. We are now making giant leaps to ethically source our materials, guaranteeing where they’re coming from, if they’ve been produced responsibly, on land that’s well managed, with animals that are cared for,’ says James Keen, Hypnos md. Sleep comfort and wellbeing remains at the heart of the collection and each mattress features its new, British-made pocket spring system with Triple Edge Protection: a slightly firmer spring at the edge is supported by a flexible frame and genuine hand side stitching to ensure excellent support and shape, whilst generous layers of natural fillings encourage a healthy sleep experience. Origins features two mattress ranges, the Wool Origins, with over eight fleeces (16kg) of pure and traceable wool, and the no-turn Cotton Origins, which features cotton and wool from Red Tractor assured farms. The mattresses catch the eye, thanks to their plush look and unbleached, sustainably sourced cotton and viscose ticking with the Hypnos motif, signalling its quality and difference. The Origins mattress collection is completely fire retardant without using FR chemicals, meaning users can enjoy a completely safe, sustainable night’s sleep. Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

Growth and development Shire Beds has become a go-to challenger brand

The past year has seen significant achievements at Shire Beds: from launching award-nominated products to achieving the ISO 9001 standard, the company is heading for a great year of growth and development. The year started with the launch of two ranges: Artisan and Essentials. Artisan is a collection of pocket sprung beds that includes the NBF Bed Show shortlisted Bed of the Year Constable 3000, with the Artisan base and headboard. The product’s fashionable low base and floor-standing Mayfair headboard combined with the pillow top mattress has been a bestseller for retailers. It is offered in 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 spring options. The pillow top offers soft comfort levels, with the top models having natural fillings. ‘The Artisan range also includes the hugely successful Picasso and Raphael mattresses, all with pocket sprung cores and layers of luxurious fillings. The collection is showing the credentials of Shire Beds as the go-to challenger brand for retailers. With the ability to make significant margins, the retail sector has seen significant growth for us,’ says Fara Butt, Shire Beds sales and marketing director. ‘Our new collections have been extremely well received by retailers, particularly the Artisan range. We were delighted the Constable 3000 was recognised by the industry and shortlisted in the Bed of the Year category. We will continue to offer great

products at prices that the consumer can rest assured are great value. ‘The Essentials range is a collection of 12 white Egyptian cotton, crisp and clean and comfortable products that are particularly suited for modern lifestyles. Available in open coil and 1,000 pocket sprung, tufted and quilted options, they are a staple in most outlets.’ Shire Beds’ Roll Up division was established in 2016. The offering of Roll & Rest products was expanded in 2018 to include the higher quality, fashion-driven Sleep 8 range. Roll & Rest includes 12 products ranging from open coil, 1,000 pocket sprung and foam. The four Sleep 8 products have castellated foam to support the body with 2,000 micro springs and are finished with a

layer of memory foam, latex, cool blue foam or Kay Gel. The upholstery division of headboards and divan bases has seen an expansion. A plush padded divan base with hidden links was added to the offering as was a greater range of headboard styles. ‘Our new products have been very well received and that is supported by all the improvements we have made in our processes. Having achieved the ISO 9001 we look towards the big challenge our industry, and business generally, is facing of environmental sustainability. Through our research, development and improvements, we will ensure we make a positive contribution to this conversation in terms of products and processes.’ Visit: www.shirebeds.co.uk

CARE

Foresight

Protect floors, furniture and your back

Low cost protection products can save a fortune We’ve all had them. Those ‘If only I’d done such and such…’ moments. Disaster strikes and we kick ourselves for not thinking ahead. It proves the proverb that ‘hindsight is 20/20’. But with Stroolmount’s specialist products, in 2020 you can be glad you had foresight. Imagine: you’ve done all the hard work. You’ve planned, measured, designed and crafted a beautiful piece of furniture or a bespoke floor and had it meticulously laid by artisan experts. It looks magnificent. You’re rightly proud. The client is delighted. Then you move furniture into the room and… scratch. A single mark has ruined a beautiful floor. It means hundreds of pounds in repairs and damage claims, an angry customer, and an even angrier boss as the profit is down or even wiped out. Plus, all the extra paperwork and hassle in putting it right – and your next job’s delayed too. Even then, it’s not over: you have the excess to pay and hikes in your insurance premiums for next year. That single scratch – and so many other problems – could so easily be

80

avoided, thanks to simple protection from Stroolmount. ‘Protect & Care products safeguard your floor, your furniture, your back and your business. Since 2007 our specialist protection products have saved businesses thousands of pounds in repairs with solutions from just 1p,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘It also makes you look more professional as your customer will appreciate that you’ve thought ahead and gone that extra mile.’ Protect & Care’s self-adhesive felt cushions the impact of furniture to prevent scratching on floors, while the Quickclick Glides, Move-it Pads and Furni-glides allow anyone to smoothly move heavy furniture across hard floors and especially carpets. They protect the furniture legs from being anchored by carpet friction, so they don’t lurch to one side, flawing the joints. ‘We don’t sell to the public, only to the trade, helping furniture and flooring retailers and manufacturers, fitters and contractors – plus architects, interior

designers and hotel refurbishers. ‘Take a look at Stroolmount’s Protect & Care products to give yourself 20/20 foresight in 2020,’ adds Finch. Visit: www.stroolmount.co.uk

Triple crown

Encore is made in Yorkshire

Fibreline has added foam to its feather and fibre options With the launch of Encore Foam, Fibreline feels confident that it now offers the very best in foam, fibre and feather cushion interiors. Following on from Encore Fibre and Encore Feather, Fibreline’s latest breakthrough in foam cushions is Encore Foam. Fibreline believes Encore Foam to be the ultimate foam cushion. It is constructed from 100% foam and achieves its properties through a combination of different foams and a very clever interior profile. Encore Foam was developed in conjunction with customer feedback. On the back of the success of Encore Fibre and Encore Feather, customers wanted to see a similar ‘quality step’

Encore Foam inner

82

Interiors Monthly January 2020

in a 100% foam cushion. They wanted the uniform look and recovery of foam but with the soft sit of fibre. Traditional foam core seats have relied on high-loft polyester wadding to add plumpness and a soft sit. But this always results in the fibre flattening over time and causing bagginess in the cover. Fibreline developed a 100% foam topper with a CNC cut profile to provide loft but softness as well. The removal of any fibre from the product makes for a very uniform look, with a soft sit but great recovery performance. As with Fibre Encore, Foam Encore was put through rigorous testing at FIRA before being awarded the FIRA Gold award. ‘We feel we have completed the triple crown of upgrade cushion fillings,’ says Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. ‘Now manufacturers have a great choice. But remember, Encore cushions are only made in Yorkshire. We like to think we are at the forefront of

cushion production technology and our production line now includes robots, which is technology never before used by a foam converter Richard Prudhoe and allows for even more cost-effective production.’ ‘Demand for Encore cushions continues to grow exponentially. More and more retailers are seeing the advantages and demanding cushions containing Encore for their ranges.’ With the increasing pressure on all within the supply chain to operate lean businesses, working on just-in-time deliveries, Fibreline’s ability to supply all three main filling components required for a sofa means that customers place one order, with one supplier, receive one delivery with one delivery note and one invoice to process. This leads to efficiencies for the customer, and also enables Fibreline to offer very competitive pricing across all fillings, as they arrive on one vehicle. Visit: www.encorecushion.co.uk

Highlights include the new Comfort Control range

Adjustable beds will be among Highgrove Beds’ debuts Highgrove Beds will use the show as a launchpad for several new products, from innovative and upgraded mattress specifications to an exciting range of adjustable beds: Comfort Control. Shane Harding, Highgrove Beds head of marketing is confident the business will continue to take market share despite what is seen as one of the toughest retail environments in years. ‘We have now firmly bedded in our three main brands into the marketplace: HG at the entry level, our established flagship Highgrove brand taking up the

centre ground and Sanctum targeting the premium hand-tailored sector. ‘In addition to the wide product offer, we will use January Furniture Show primarily to target new customers, both at home and from overseas, with exclusive offers and promotions also available to existing customers.’ Highgrove has invested more than £500,000 in recent years supporting high street retailers with high impact in-store displays and additional POS, including branded footmats and pillowcases to enhance in-store displays.

Although the Internet plays an increasingly important role in consumer decision making, Highgrove has made a tactical and commercial decision to support the high street and its Brochure collection is strictly not available for online trading. ‘We feel that consumers still want to “try before they buy” and although online sales growth continues to outpace retail, high ticket comfort items will still be primarily sold in-store for many years to come,’ says Harding. As across the whole business, the emphasis is upon making the buying process as easy, efficient and problem-free for its customers as possible. ‘Everything that we do is designed to get the best possible outcome for our customers. Everybody in our business knows that the customer comes first and we work together to continually enhance our proposition, be it a wider and better product offering, flexible distribution solutions, stock availability, bespoke development or project management. We were proud to win the Interiors Monthly award for Customer Service again, but our customers can rest assured that we will keep on working hard to serve them better,’ say Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. SHOW GUIDE

Double choice

Cintique’s Mayfair

Celebrity and Cintique will debut new looks

Due to the success of the Celebrity and Mammoth collaboration introduced at the January Furniture Show a year ago, which saw the bed company’s foam used in Celebrity’s recliners, the development teams have created more designs ready to launch at this year’s show. The new Sandhurst riser recliner has been designed based on both customer and retailer feedback. With a sculptured back offering both lumbar and neck support, plus Mammoth’s Medical Grade foam in the fabric models, the Sandhurst offers an exceptional level of comfort and health benefits. The Celebrity range of Sandhurst recliner chairs are available in Grande, Standard and Petite, with the option of Celebrity’s popular ZipSPEED express delivery. Matching two and three-seater fixed and reclining sofas complete the

range. There is also an option to add an adjustable headrest function to selected dual motor riser recliner models, and new for 2020, a choice of modern or traditional handset. All Sandhurst models are available in any Celebrity fabric or leather with the addition of legged two-seat fixed sofas and powered or manual recliner legged recliner chairs. A customer own cover service is also available. The demand in 2019 for the Celebrity Aquaclean fabric collection exceeded expectation and a dozen designs and colourways will be added, including the Celebrity Alpine Aquaclean fabric design, recommended for homes with pets. Thanks to the fact that all Celebrity’s upholstery is manufactured to order in the UK, Celebrity is able to create products with many options available

for customer preference. In addition, Celebrity models come with a five-year frame, action and motor guarantee. The Cintique range launching at the show includes the Mayfair, inspired by Cintique’s classic heritage with design elements for today’s modern living. This natural showwood frame range is a prime example of the high quality achieved by British manufacturing. Incorporating both traditional skills and technology all Cintique furniture comes with the reassurance of a lifetime frame guarantee. Available in a choice of cloth combinations from natural weaves to more opulent velvets and faux fur elements, the Mayfair is easily adapted to a range of tastes. Cintique also offers a customer own cover service. Visit: www.celebrity-furniture.co.uk www.cintique.co.uk Frames have a lifetime guarantee

Double take Gallery Direct will be in two halls Gallery Direct is renowned for its double-decker stand at the January Furniture Show, where it launches its Spring Summer collection each year, and 2020 will be no exception. However, as well as the Hall 3 stand, it has also taken a space in the bed section of Hall 5. Both will be used to exhibit its SS 2020 collection, which features more than 400 new lines. The new products include several furniture ranges, using a variety of materials from reclaimed wood to Indian marble and from granite to hand-carved wood. Hackney is a capsule range featuring bronze finish metal legs

combined with a stepped design, with the tops covered with glass for practicality. Offering a smart rustic farmhouse look, the pieces make a real design statement with their upcycled feel. Parquet has a nod to the Art Deco era, with its inlay herringbone design made from reclaimed elm, with an industrial twist from the metal frames. The range includes a dining table with chairs in a choice of grey or green velvet. All the new furniture collections will be showcased on stand L20, along with extensions to some of Gallery Direct’s existing ranges, including Madrid which features soft, rounded tops supported on elegant underframes with cross-rails. A display unit with open shelves and cupboard storage has been introduced, and the range has been developed in walnut, to offer the same flowing shapes but with a different feel for those who like a deep mellow wood finish. ‘Madrid Oak, which we launched last year, has proved to be incredibly successful, so we decided to develop the range in a different finish. Walnut was chosen to make it stand out from the crowd amongst other ranges. The warm, mellow colour works beautifully with the soft curves and edges to give a

collection of beautiful tactile pieces,’ says James Hudson, Gallery Direct sales and business development director. Complementing the new furniture will be a wide selection of wall decor, featuring mirrors with new shapes and colours added to the current collection, and wall art. The new soft furnishings include cushions and throws made from recycled plastic. Gallery Direct’s bed offering features a new line-up of sofa beds, six mattress collections, and upholstered beds and headboards including a floating bed with a choice of three headboards. All the Wiltshire-made upholstery is offered in 58 fabrics. The mattress collections include a selection suitable for contract use, and the divans and headboards and MTO sofas, sofa beds and bedsteads can all be manufactured to Crib 5 if required. Stand G60 in Hall 5 will showcase predominantly mattresses and divans, with sofa beds and bedsteads being exhibited on the main stand in Hall 3. ‘We’re really excited about the new collection. A lot of hard work has gone into developing these products, and we are looking forward to showing them at the January Furniture Show,’ says Hudson. Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Opulent Times

Elemental

In vogue Fifty Five South has identified three key trends for 2020 Elemental offers some much needed respite from a frantic, informationsaturated world that can often feel overwhelming. In this soothing trend the home becomes a getaway, offering a space for quiet moments of reflection. This calm aesthetic finds peace in the simplistic; adopting an unobtrusive, earthy palette, with householders finding comfort in tactile organic materials. The grey marble Kira candle holders demonstrate a certain type of restraint: the design has been stripped back to the basics and steers clear of any unnecessary ornamentation. In Elemental, rattan represents sustainability, craftmanship and nature, making it a popular material across the trend. The openwork Lagom (‘balanced’ in Swedish) chair is crafted from renewable rattan, with a black finish to contrast the light nature of this trend. Many dream of living in a luxurious boutique hotel, and Opulent Times is built around that premise. With consumers increasingly looking for ways to pamper themselves at home, this is a trend that represents pure indulgence. The home

Interiors Monthly January 2020

becomes a space to celebrate and host social gatherings. This self-confident style is graphic and bold, inspired by the glamour of Viennese Modernism and Art Deco. Statement furniture, such as the Binky sofa, takes centre stage. This glamorous sofa is upholstered in rich wine-hued velvet and features elegant channel-tufting and metallic legs. Meanwhile, gold accents enhance the luxe appeal – from the quirky Sika giraffe table lamp and Horizon side table, to the Nixie emerald glass and gold trinket boxes. This bold trend encapsulates the optimistic energy of the lively 1970s and aims to create a feeling of positivity in interior spaces. Bohemian Lounge is maximalist by nature; bursting with vibrant colour and rich materials and patterns. Style-driven consumers welcome this trend as it allows them to use their homes as a canvas for self-expression, and offers a welcome contrast to the slick minimalism that has been popular in recent times. The Bosie Ozella cushion range was developed to embody the lively energy of this trend, while making it easy for consumers to

incorporate into their home decor. This colourful collection features luxurious embroidery, used to create unique patterns that feel retro, yet fresh, especially when set against the daring orange upholstery of the Manhattan armchair. Visit: www.fiftyfivesouth.com

Following the success of the pop-up test lab at last year’s show, the group‘s research and product experts return to bring to life some of their latest sleep science research, including the results of an award-winning two-year study. Sitting comfortably Upholstery will be Sweet Dreams’ focus Sweet Dreams’ major focus for the January Furniture Show will be upholstery, following what has been a very positive year for the range. In 2019 the company saw significant growth in its upholstery range. Britishmade models Harvey, Fraser and Carmen in particular have proved major sellers, and at the Manchester Furniture Show this was built upon with the introduction of Blenheim, Knole and Pixton. To expand on this, for January 2020, up to five new collections will be revealed in the British-made collection. Details of the new models are not yet available, but Sweet Dreams promises strong commercial appeal for the 3+2+1 suites, a number with matching stools. New selections of fabrics and colourways for British-made upholstery will also be launched, while scatterback cushions will be included as standard. Sweet Dreams’ imported recliners will also be on show, as will sofa beds, a major success story at the show in 2019. Divans and mattresses, Sweet Dreams’ core range, will form a prominent display. The collections launched at the Bed Show in 2019: Pocket Air Pure, Hand Crafted and Defined Edge Support, will be exhibited for those who missed them first time around. The collections, all with luxury specifications or distinctive qualities, enjoyed enormous success with buyers at Telford and have performed well since, so Sweet Dreams anticipates a great deal of interest at the NEC.

Interiors Monthly January 2020

Complementing the beds and frames will be ready-assembled bedroom cabinet. A number of models such as the high gloss Madden first shown in Manchester have gone on to be best-sellers and Sweet Dreams is looking forward to exhibiting these models again, too. At the 2019 NEC show Sweet Dreams revealed new collections for downstairs rooms: dining sets, living room cabinet and decorative accessories. The best performing models will be on display in 2020, complementing the upholstery. Sweet Dreams’ success with its upholstery ranges recognises the serious attention it pays to compliance. In 2019 the manufacturer took its commitment a step further by establishing its own

testing centre. The Scholefield Technology Centre is a state-of-the-art product testing hub near the company’s head office. It comprises no fewer than seven machines, including two testing for mattress durability and sofa fatigue, a Martindale abrasion machine and a flammability testing area. The area is designed not only to ensure that all products are fully compliant before leaving the factory, but also to make considerable savings of economy and resources in enabling the manufacturer to test on-site. Staffed by a compliance manager and technician, the centre is a member of SATRA, and UKAS accreditation is imminent. Visit: www.sweetdreamsuk.com

selection yet. It is excited to introduce and launch more than 100 products across 15 ranges, all available in a huge selection of sizes. This year will see the launch of 12 new product ranges, plus plenty of new additions to its most successful and established collections. The company has been working hard to bring retailers an exciting array of products focusing on textures, contemporary designs and on-trend colours, and taking on traditional oriental styles with distressed overlay, alongside versatile geometric prints and authentic vintage and abstract designs. Following the success of millennial pinks and ultraviolet pantone colours in 2018/2019 Think Rugs has worked hard to incorporate these rosy, demure blush tones into some of its favourite designs such as the MT04, in company with its new ranges such as Atlas. Other new ranges include Craft, which incorporates metallic, abstract and marble trends to create a unique deluxe style; Aurora, an ultra high quality machine-made range created from an on-trend demure colour palette; and Mosaic, a bright and fun design styled on mosaic tiles. In addition, it is also launching new colour options and designs in its most popular Matrix, Royal Nomadic and Sunrise ranges. Visit: www.thinkrugs.co.uk

Celebrations

Seville in turquoise

Whitemeadow will be celebrating 25 years Whitemeadow will again be at the January Furniture Show, this year fresh from celebrating its 25th anniversary. ‘The business has developed beyond recognition in our 25 years, starting from humble beginnings with a handful of employees at our first site, to where we are now, one of the biggest furniture makers in the UK with six manufacturing units and more than 600 employees. This achievement is solely down to one thing and that is the people who have worked for us over the years,’ says Ian Oscroft, Whitemeadow md. Whitemeadow has over 20 employees that have 20plus years’ experience at the company, totalling over 567 years. To mark the anniversary, the company has created a Wall of Fame for those with 25 years’ service. The first of these is upholsterer Garry Griffiths, who was there on 12 December 1994. Two further staff members will join him on the Wall of Fame this year. ‘Exciting times are ahead for Whitemeadow as the next few years will see us focus not only on strengthening

Oscroft welcomes Griffiths into the Wall of Fame

our position as a key supplier to the UK’s upholstery market, but also on becoming a company recognised for sustainability by implementing manufacturing processes and products that address current environmental concerns. ‘We are looking forward to kicking off 2020 with our biggest stand yet at the January Furniture Show, at Hall 1 stand E40/F40, where we will have our own

Young Furniture Makers will feature at the show Following its sponsoring of the awards ceremony for the Young Furniture Makers’ Awards at the Furniture Makers’ Awards ceremony in October, January Furniture Show will feature a selection of the winning designs at the entrance to Hall 1 of the exhibition. More than 100 designs of furniture and lighting were entered for the awards, covering both domestic and contract use. The featured selection of around 10 designs will show the range of talent and inventiveness among young designers working today: some of whom are still studying and some who are already graduates. ‘It was clear at the Young Furniture Makers’ Awards ceremony that there is both real talent and genuine enthusiasm amongst young designers to use and re-use materials carefully. They not only showed imagination but created

furniture with artistry and precision and produced practical, eye-catching and truly unique pieces,’ says Cleere Scamell, January Furniture Show event director. ‘We are privileged to have some of

those designs at JFS in 2020 and I have no doubt that the Young Furniture Makers feature will be a conversation piece in itself.’ Visit: www.furnituremakers.org.uk

More choice

The show is members only on 17-18 January. Non-members can visit on 19-20 January.

The show will see exclusive launches The AIS Furniture Show promises innovation and inspiration this month as it focuses on new products and improvements to the show’s aesthetic. Moving into the new decade the show demonstrates that it is leading the way for independent furniture retailers. It exhibits a broad spectrum of more than 40 suppliers from across the globe, including both highly established and up-and-coming names, but this edition will see eight new suppliers launched exclusively at the exhibition. Corium, sister company of HTL, is among the eight. Manufactured in northern Italy using traditional craftsmanship, Corium combines natural materials such as leather with stainless steel and draws its design inspiration from the rich heritage of Tuscany. Upholstery supplier Stella, will also be exhibiting for the first time at AIS. Launching as a newcomer to the UK, the Polish supplier offers commercially designed fabric product incorporating

time at AIS, offering a comprehensive collection of garden furniture. ‘It is the exclusive ranges at the show that provide members with significant advantages over other buyers,’ says Julian Cox, AIS director of furniture. ‘Established brands – Parker Knoll, G Plan, Alstons and Duresta amongst others – offer AIS members exclusive furniture

ranges, creating a unique selling point for retailers but also enhanced profit margin opportunities. We have started to progress this strategy on cabinet furniture too, with new ranges having been developed specifically under the Stag and Ducal brands that are exclusive to AIS members. ‘Our members, and the wider

audience, can expect to see a selection of exciting new ranges from established upholstery favourites including himolla, La-Z-Boy, Premier, HTL and Primavera. ‘In addition to the AIS exclusive ranges there will also be some innovative product from Disselkamp, Classic, Venjakob and TCH amongst others.’ The show had a footfall of over 850 visitors in 2019 and is anticipating an increase for 2020. The event is members only on 17-18 January before welcoming non-members on 19 and 20 January (9am-4pm and 8.30am-5pm respectively). ‘We are expecting the Scandi trend to carry on into 2020, focusing on stripped-back style and geometric shapes with metallic touches such as copper and bronze popping up within collections. Popular colours for 2020 are warm earthy tones such as terracotta and burnt orange, particularly in velvet fabrics to add texture. Although warm neutrals are on trend, cooler tones such as grey and teal continue to be core colours across all categories with both members and suppliers,’ says Cox. Supreme comfort himolla will showcase Azure

‘It has taken Tamara Härty, himolla chief designer and art director and her team a year and a half of inspiration and perspiration to create the sensational new Azure collection for himolla’s famous Cumuly range of recliners and sofas. The hard work and meticulous attention to detail has all been worth it: Azure will impact on the market like a bolt from the blue,’ says Rob Davies, himolla UK agent ‘Her vision was to take himolla’s core values – the very qualities that have Tamara Härty

made the company one of Europe’s leading furniture manufacturers – and add her own sophisticated style. The result is deep, sumptuous-looking seats juxtaposed with delicate curves and slender lines, plus tall backs and luxurious finishes. The overall effect is supreme comfort with a light, bulk-free look. ‘This latest incarnation of the bestselling Cumuly range retains the value, functionality and quality that made models such as the Rhine, Chester and Themse so popular. Features like

independently adjustable neck, back and foot rests and, of course, himolla’s unrivalled choice of leather and material finishes are all available. Options include wall-huggers and powered head rests. Azure chairs offer manual, electric and lift-and-rise alternatives, while the sofas are two, two-and-a-half or three-seaters, with a chaise element for extra style. ‘The vision is a reality. Purity

The show’s Pure halls will showcase the latest trends In January, design will meet business once again at imm cologne. A whole host of trends and innovations will be showcased in the Pure halls, which are being further expanded to include outdoor and bathroom products. What are the latest interior design trends for 2020? What new furniture products and living concepts will imm cologne’s exhibitors present to an enthusiastic trade show audience? Will the home furnishings scene starting the 2020 season at imm cologne really be as ‘green’ and sustainable as the trend forecasters predict? Or will the increasing shortage of living space in congested metropolitan areas determine the look of the new generation of furniture? Answers to these exciting questions can be found at the start of this year. Traditionally an exhibition where orders are placed, imm cologne has developed over many years into a platform for interior design trends. The high standards in the Pure segments and the exclusive mix offered to visitors in the Pure Halls 11, 3 and 2 on a total of seven hall levels are one of the reasons for this successful evolution. Brands like Brühl, ClassiCon, Cor, Sippold, Pulpo, Vitra, Flexform, Minotti, Müller, Menu, de Sede, Interlübke, Rolf Benz, Leolux, Magis, Softline, Normann Copenhagen, Schönbuch, Sophisticated

Living, Knoll International, Schramm, Team 7, Baxter, Jan Kath and Walter Knoll stand for continuity, creativity and change all at the same time: for them, imm cologne is the countdown to a dazzling design event. In the Pure segment, major design brands exhibit alongside small labels, new start-ups and traditional furniture ranges. This mixture not only appeals to the trade audience, it also attracts international media representatives. The Pure halls are where trends are set and various lifestyle concepts are presented. Pure Editions is the dynamic, compact format at imm cologne featuring the exciting ideas from providers of visionary

furniture and interiors concepts. The open, individually designed trade fair architecture is set against the dark backdrop of the halls, lending the segment and its product concepts and interior designs by international exhibitors a theatrical ambiance: a venue for staging designs that make a statement. In Hall 11, the name Pure Atmospheres emphasises the character of this presentation format for holistic interiors concepts with complete collections. In atmospheric and compact presentations, the exhibitors will showcase their brand concepts: their own take on domestic culture, their personal signature, their Fatboy

interpretation of good design. Here the focus is not on the individual product, but on the interaction of all elements. ‘imm cologne is one of the largest and leading interior business events for domestic living in the world,’ says Matthias Pollmann, Koelnmesse vice president trade fair management. ‘However, we’ve also noted its growing significance for the contract sector. In

Ercol

the hospitality industry in particular, the use of high-quality design products has become increasingly important, and our exhibitors in the Pure segment showcase precisely these design highlights. ‘Consumer behaviour and the use of living space are changing. For example, there is a growing trend among many people to live in harmony with nature. imm cologne also reflects these

developments and hosts many outdoors suppliers in the Pure segment. ‘Thanks to our extensive restructuring of imm cologne’s new interior worlds, we have been able to adjust our activities to appeal to our target groups with even greater focus. With this year’s Pure Architects themed area as a hook, we have significantly increased our efforts to attract interiors professionals.’ Pure Architects alternates with Living Kitchen to take place every two years and is designed to provide the information needed by architects, interior designers and purchasing decision makers. With this themed world located within the lifestyle-oriented Pure segment, imm cologne is offering exhibitors of innovative interior concepts the opportunity to present their new products and innovations in a compact format. More than 100,000 pieces of furniture and other furnishing items will be exhibited, around a third of which are new products. The show has established the New Moments innovations platform to give the best overview of the vast range of products. Visitors can find out information about the most interesting new developments on show online and in an installation showcasing the latest innovations. ‘At no other furniture trade fair is the diversity of the interior design sector so comprehensively reflected as at imm cologne. Our exhibitors present ready-to-market products here because the designer labels participating in the event want to generate sales at the start of the year,’ says Pollmann. The project to create an innovative exhibition system with an international vision and a solid local basis, promoting the quality of ‘Design in China’ and ‘Made in China’,

An international vision

will come to life from the next edition of CIFF, with further biennial developments scheduled for 2021, 2023 and 2025. The first step is the construction of a 50,000sqm space dedicated to original Chinese home furniture design, and the designation of an entire pavilion of the office show devoted to the latest trends in office furniture design. In addition, more space will be reserved for foreign brands, with the goal of introducing an increasing amount of innovative content and giving attention to global trends. A team of curators – Wen Hao, Hou Zhengguang, Song Tao and Frank Chou – will select companies that invest in design and creativity, with the aim of consolidating CIFF Guangzhou as the event dedicated to global trends in the furniture industry.

Opportunities for networking

During the first phase of CIFF Guangzhou, the curators will select and invite design companies and designers to participate in the Contemporary Chinese Furniture Design Fair. The event, organised in Hall 3.2, will be full of design and trend content, touching on technical and innovative aspects without neglecting commercial and ethical issues such as environmental sustainability. With this new project, CIFF continues to innovate the exhibition concept, working alongside the furniture industry in order to respond to new needs and to bring ever more benefits to visitors and exhibitors. The optimisation of the exhibition layout, the organisation of design events rich in content and sources of inspiration, including CIFF Designer Workshop, Parallel Space Exhibition, Design Dream Show, Children’s Space by Daddy Designers, Office Theme Pavilion, China Interiors & Decorations Conference and Global Garden Lifestyle Festival, with the continuous improvement of the information and catering services in the exhibition complex, the range of hotels and the transport services, are designed to make CIFF an unmissable event. Bright star

More than 500 exhibitors will take part

Vietnam is enjoying booming furniture exports Vietnam is now becoming one of the brightest stars in wood-based furniture production and exports, accounting for about 6% of the global market. In the first three quarters of 2019, Vietnam’s export value of timber, wood products and non-timber forest products jumped 18% to US$7.93bn, and is forecast to reach US$20bn by 2025. By September 2019, Vietnam had more than 5,500 companies and 340 villages producing and trading wood and forest products. Of those, 2,372 export timber, wooden products and non-timber forest products. The key to Vietnam’s success lies with the flexibility of its manufacturers and access to sustainable, legal imported and local plantation materials. Its wood processing industry, after a development and improvement stage, has built a

Supreme fabrics More than 35 producers will be on show The BFM Fabric Show London returns from Wednesday 19 February to Thursday 20 February at its regular Chelsea FC venue at Stamford Bridge, London. Familiar returning companies from the UK and Europe will make up the 35 plus exhibitors at the show, which are gearing up to show their latest designs and fabric treatments to upholstery, bed and soft furnishing retailers and manufacturers. Organised by the BFM, the event is open to both members and nonmembers of the association. ‘We are looking forward to a lively BFM Fabric Show London in 2020 with many renowned and unique fabric manufacturers in the line-up. There are 42 BFM members exhibiting at January Furniture Show in 2020, many of whom are showing upholstery models dressed in fabrics they selected at the 2019 fabric show,’ says Nick Garratt, BFM md. ‘With a collective turnover of nearly £800m, those manufacturers, along with other companies not showing at JFS, will be looking for new fabrics for their 2021 models. BFM Fabric Show London provides not only a comprehensive choice but is also the easiest place to see so many premier fabric brands under one roof – and to choose from some of the best fabrics available anywhere in the world.’ Among the UK companies showing their new fabric designs in 2020 will be Acquitaine, British Velvets, Mobus, Moon, Warwick and Woven Art. SERVICES

Going, going…

MFA holds a furniture auction every week

An auction could be the way to dispose of unwanted stock Midland Furniture Auctions understands vendors perceive unwanted stock as a burden, an annoying problem to be solved. If it can be sold straightaway that’s great, but if buyers don’t materialise then stock takes up valuable space. Even worse, it ends up being disposed of, making no profit and being environmentally unfriendly. How much better if that furniture could be sold without much effort, finding a home where it will be used and seeing a nice return for it too. MFA’s weekly auction provides this service every Wednesday for its vendors, The team sells a full range of items including end of line, seconds, returns, prototypes or excess furniture. Selling

172

Interiors Monthly January 2020

this is what it specialises in: clearing vendors’ stock efficiently and hassle free. Simply arrange to drop it off at the saleroom, located just off junction 28 on the M1, at Alfreton in Derbyshire. MFA will store it until it finds a buyer at auction. If it doesn’t sell that week there is no fee to pay, and the furniture will be auctioned again the following week. It’s not the vendor’s problem any longer and it’s not taking up space either. Vendors shouldn’t overlook their chances of selling more tired stock either. MFA has bolt-on services to repair or assemble stock, making sure it gets the best return achievable. ‘It might seem strange that we get so excited about selling furniture vendors

don’t want, but we do. The auction is an event for us – the anticipation before the auction as the saleroom fills with buyers. Then the sale starts and the bids start coming in thick and fast. As an auctioneer it is electrifying to be the ringmaster of the room,’ says Dean Carpenter, MFA senior auctioneer. ‘The buyers are there waiting every week and we have to offer them the massive range of stock they are used to. We are always looking for new vendors or even previous vendors to return. We’ve been doing this a long time and are certain our formula is the golden ticket to getting rid of unwanted stock. We hope to see you at the next auction.’ Visit: www.mfa.bid
