EDITOR’S COMMENT
Is the CMA coming for you? The Competition and Markets Authority has warned retailers to be on the right side of the law The decision by the Competition and Markets Authority to open its second investigation into the selling practices of the mattress sector in little over a year shows it has the industry firmly in its crosshairs. This time it is Simba it is investigating for ‘potentially misleading claims about the extent of price reductions on its mattresses and related products and the use of urgency claims such as countdown timers that may mislead consumers on the availability of special offers’. In November 2022 it was Emma for the same reasons, so you would have thought that the sector would have made sure it was definitely of the right side of the regulatory fence by now. Especially when the CMA called on UK businesses to stop using sales practices that could break the law in March last year, specifically highlighting ‘price comparison claims that present consumers with a reduced price alongside a higher, struckthrough price, when in fact very few items were sold at the higher price; or the use of countdown-timers that do not accurately reflect when offers will end.’ As the CMA has stressed, it may find that Simba and Emma have done nothing wrong but it’s not a good look. To quote Sarah Cardell, CMA chief executive: ‘Other companies in the mattress sector, and across the online economy, should take the opportunity to look at their own practices to ensure that the way they do business stays within the law.’ Retailers cannot complain they haven’t been warned. Congratulations to the winners of the 60 for 60 competition to find the most talented in the industry aged 35 and under. As you might expect, retail is represented in many roles from management to distribution to design. Space prevents me listing them all here but there are profiles of them on The Furniture Makers’ Company’s website. It’s well worth a read. This month will see the industry’s exhibition calendar return to what we once thought of as normal for the first time in what seems a very long time.

CMA launches Simba pricing investigation The Competition and Markets Authority has launched an investigation to examine whether Simba Sleep has misled consumers about price reductions and put unfair pressure on consumers to make quick purchases. The CMA says that the concerns being investigated focus on: Simba Sleep’s use of potentially misleading claims about the extent of price reductions on its mattresses and related products, and the use of urgency claims such as countdown timers that may mislead consumers on the availability of special offers. The investigation follows the publication in March 2023 of an open letter from the CMA, which called on UK businesses to stop using sales practices that could break the law. The letter provides practical examples of common online sales practices that may mislead consumers or apply undue pressure. Examples include price comparison claims that present consumers with a reduced price alongside a higher, struck-through price, when in fact very few items were sold at the higher price; or the use of countdown-timers that do not accurately reflect when offers will end.
‘It’s important shoppers can recognise a genuinely good deal, especially as the cost of living hits people’s pockets. More and more of us are buying online so it’s essential companies are being upfront and honest about claims they make about price reductions or when using countdown clocks that may pressure people into making quick decisions,’ says Sarah Cardell, CMA chief executive. ‘Discounts are a great way for firms to attract customers, but they must represent a real saving. We’re concerned that firms in the mattress sector and perhaps more widely could be using price reduction claims in a way that could mislead shoppers. ‘We’ve given Simba Sleep notice that we have launched a consumer investigation into its potentially misleading sales practices. Other companies in the mattress sector, and across the online economy, should take the opportunity to look at their own practices to ensure that the way they do business stays within the law.’ The CMA has an ongoing investigation into the pricing policies of Emma Sleep.
Furniture inflation increases
London Design Fair cancelled This year’s London Design Fair has been cancelled by the organisers. Diversified Communications says it found it increasingly difficult to ‘reconcile the high expectations for an event of this quality, with the commercial support from the industry.’ The show was founded in 2007 as
4
Interiors Monthly January 2024
Tent London before being renamed in 2016 and was the largest event of the London Design Festival. In 2018 it attracted 29,000 visitors but Covid saw the show miss three years. The 2024 edition had been scheduled to take place from 19-22 September at the Truman Brewery in Shoreditch.
The rate of inflation on furniture has increased for the first time in over a year. Since November 2022, the rate for household furniture has steadily dropped from 13.2%, but in November 2023 it rose from 2.2% to 2.4%. The Office for National Statistics data also showed an increase in prices for garden furniture, up from 3.9% to 4.3%. The rate for lighting jumped from 1.2% to 4.2%. Furnishing fabrics saw price rises climb from 2.8% to 3.1% and table and bathroom linen from 2.3% to 3%. Meanwhile, the rate of inflation in flooring has fallen for the second successive time in more than a year. Since November 2022 the rate has seen inflation rise , then fall and rise again, but in November 2023 it broke the pattern, dropping from 7.7% to 5.7%: it had been 9.4% in September 2023 and 9.3% in November 2022. Price increases for carpets and rugs fell to 7.1%: the lowest rate this year.

Although we see inflation starting to ease, the cost of living continues to have a very real impact. We recognise that when our coworkers grow, so does Ikea, and our aim is to ensure that

EXPERIENCES
The price is right Pricing a product higher can lead to unexpected results, says our correspondent
The customer’s judgement of the value of the floorcovering may differ from yours
THE RETAILER Fludes Carpets Last month I reported on the need to be prepared to go the extra mile when dealing with demanding customers. Yes, it is a pain, but it can often give you a customer for life. Another of our ‘Mr Awkward’ customers has just arranged for a quote, which will be about £12,000 for four bedrooms. I will let you know how we get on next month. By then, our winter sale will be underway. To be fair, we spend a lot of time and advertising budget telling our customers what fantastic service we offer, so we should not be surprised when they look to us to deliver on our claims and promises. This Autumn we have seen a mixed period of good and bad sales, but overall a slight fall in sales compared to the past two years. But we are still in the post-Covid period, with comparisons against a time when people had more disposable income,
20

interest levels on loans were lower and energy costs were significantly different from the current rates. lt seems that the ‘new normal’ is just around the corner. But we don’t know which corner it is coming from! Among the issues facing our flooring business is that of increased costs for both retailers and suppliers. However, the past couple of months have seen some reductions in prices from some suppliers, which is most helpful. By offering these products, we can either sell at a lower price or keep the price as it was and improve the gross profit. lt is a difficult decision to make because sometimes you can price a good product at a fantastic price only to have the customer say: ‘It is too cheap, it can’t be a good quality.’ As retailers, we know what carpets and flooring products are worth, so sometimes by increasing the price, you may get an order because in the customer’s own
judgement, the value of the carpet or floorcovering is good and they will be buying. (As a bonus you will get a good gross profit.) A few years ago, I was on a golfing break in Scotland with a couple of friends. The course was very busy and most of the golfers were Americans on a tour of the great Scottish courses – St Andrews included. The next year, I revisited the club and it was very quiet, no Americans in sight. I asked the manager why, and he told me he had spoken with the company in the US that took the bookings for the tour. Most good golf courses, he was told, cost £75 to £100 a round. Anything cheaper would not even be considered. The next year I was back at the course, but it was so busy I couldn’t get a tee time. I went to see the manager. ‘How come you’re so busy?’ ‘We put the price up to £95 a round,’ he said. ‘The Americans love it.’ Andy Laird, Fludes Carpets owner

Difference
Satisfactory quality and fitness for purpose are not the same thing Satisfactory quality and fitness for purpose are terms that easily get confused. According to consumer law, any product sold must meet both of these requirements, but what is the difference? A recent case illustrated this very clearly. A flooring consultant had examined the vinyl flooring in some student flats. This had rucked and torn under the desk chairs in most of the rooms, but the vinyl was of contract quality with a good felt backing and the consultant had concluded, rightly in my opinion, there was nothing wrong with it. The developer then tried to find someone who could examine the chairs and, as a result of an online search, contacted me. After an exchange of emails to confirm my expertise, he engaged me to visit the site to see if the chairs were faulty – also known as ‘not of satisfactory quality’. I met the developer on site and we went round the various rooms. The chairs were wire framed with moulded seats and clip-on plastic feet, a fairly common construction. Sure, the feet
The wire frame had left indentations in the flooring
22
Interiors Monthly January 2024
could be unclipped, but I would hardly call that a fault and it should not affect the normal use of the chair. However, this was student rental accommodation. It would be reasonable (without casting aspersions on student living) to assume that the chairs were likely to undergo a measure of heavy use and perhaps a certain amount of what in any other environment might be considered abuse. In many rooms one or more of the plastic feet had come off. Not only did this make the chairs rock, but it also meant the weight of the user was borne by the wire frame in direct contact with the flooring and so there were many severe indentations. Furthermore, the chair design was entirely fixed but had nevertheless been specified for use at the students’ desks. There was no adjustment so they could ensure their seating posture and sightlines to their screens were correct, and the chair did not slide out freely when they wanted to stand up. As a result the chairs would tip backwards and the pressure on the feet was rucking the vinyl and causing the tearing.
The chairs – and the flooring – were not faulty, but they were not fit for purpose. Whoever chose the chairs should have considered the demands that would be made on them and chosen an office-type adjustable chair on castors, and a suitable mat to prevent castor damage to the flooring. The use of a fixed chair, with small parts that would easily come loose, showed a lack of skill and care on the part of the interior designer/specifier. In this case there were many different companies involved in the project and each had been seeking to deny liability. But if this dispute went to court, a judge would have no problem assessing the evidence. Are the chairs of satisfactory quality? Yes, they would be fine in many situations. Are they fit for purpose? No, in this case there are ‘extra’ requirements that would be obvious to anyone selecting furnishings for this project, but these have not been considered. SUSTAINABILITY
Longevity is key
Shelved wants shoppers to see furniture as a long-term investment
Flatpack furniture versus long-term investment Sometimes it isn’t a question of materials or recyclability that makes a product sustainable, it’s its longevity. This is the approach taken by modular furniture brand Shelved. The company is on a mission to change the perception of furniture as a disposable purchase. By crafting modular shelving that is durable, versatile and built to last more than 25 years, it is looking to redefine what it means to invest in quality home furnishings. ‘The furniture landscape today is dominated by flatpack giants like Ikea, offering affordability and convenience
24
Interiors Monthly January 2024
but at a hidden cost. The average lifespan of Ikea furniture can be as little as three years, leading to a cycle of constant replacement. This not only costs more in the long run but also contributes to environmental waste,’ says Jonathan Clark, Shelved creative director. ‘On average, the length of time that renters stay in one property in the UK is approximately four years. This means that, on average, renters would need to replace their furniture after every single tenancy. In addition, Ikea states on the website: ‘Although most IKEA furniture is flatpack furniture, it’s not designed to be
disassembled after you assemble it for the first time,’ meaning that those moving aren’t able to move their furniture to their next property. Whether it’s elderly parents seeking support later in life, children belatedly returning home to save money or grandparents helping raise young children, we can often find three or more generations co-existing under the same roof. This is where clever design, flexible furniture and, of course, a dose of colour can help lift a space and make it feel relevant for the whole family. ‘The commonality of each scheme is a consistent, reassuring and cosseting feeling that good design produces. Antique French Oak Glenmore Oak
Quiet luxury Karndean Designflooring has added contemporary herringbone oak designs Available from this month, six new herringbone floors in a range of classic oak designs will enable home decorators to embrace the sophistication of the quiet luxury trend and add value to their home. Expanding the styling opportunites of Karndean’s ever popular Van Gogh range, the new herringbone designs are guaranteed to inject an intimate elegance into any room. From the neutral blond tones of Canadian Nude Oak, with its gentle straight-grain patterning, to the mix of distressed brown and grey tones of Hayfield Oak, inspired by timber reclaimed from an old railway station in the Scottish Highlands, and the authentically replicated historic markings and tarnishing of Antique French Oak, the new herringbone designs bring natural warmth, a modern finish and the versatility to create a bespoke look. ‘Our customers have always relied on us to provide beautiful floors that can stand up to the demands of modern life. Herringbone is a classic floor pattern that has seen a recent renaissance and its popularity continues to grow. To meet this market demand for product quality, style versatility and long-term appeal, our designers have selected six designs from our Van Gogh collection in a new,

contemporary herringbone format,’ says Fleur Carson, Karndean Designflooring md. ‘Now more than ever, we are craving serenity and natural beauty in our homes. By introducing quietly luxurious materials, it becomes simple to curate a reassuringly calm space that is timeless and understated. Whether appealing to a preference for organic neutrals that bring a sense of peace or a kaleidoscope of bold colours and patterns, these new herringbone designs will both complement present tastes and offer the flexibility to evolve with future trends. ‘Available in a new 18in x 4.5in plank size in a glue-down format, the new herringbones are the ideal option to provide textural interest in an openplan home or introduce a sense of space in a smaller room. In addition, each design can be combined with its matching full-size plank for a cohesive room-to-room style. ‘This collection provides plenty of scope to get creative with the impact of a double herringbone. Customers can opt for statement style by combining two contrasting colourways for a stunning geometric effect before completing the floor with a border.’ The Van Gogh range offers a wide selection of wood and stone designs
in a choice of glue-down and rigid core formats. The collection now includes 14 designs available in both herringbone and matching full-size options. ‘A preferred alternative to laminate and engineered wood, Karndean flooring has all the charm of real wood or stone without the downsides. Hard-wearing, comfortable underfoot and compatible with underfloor heating, as well as low in volatile organic compounds and phthalate free for a healthy home environment, Karndean flooring is perfectly suited to busy modern life and comes with the reassurance of a lifetime guarantee,’ says Carson. Deirdre Dyson will unveil her 2024 rug collection, Graduation, during Maison et Objet’s ‘In The City’ event (17–24 January). The first look at the nine new designs in the flesh will be hosted at her Paris gallery in the heart of Paris’s vibrant design quarter, Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The collection will then be on show at her London showroom. Graduation takes inspiration from the natural world, from autumnal berried hedgerows to tranquil land and seascapes, and is focused more on the use of colour than formal design. With subtle and soft graduating washes akin to watercolour painting, Dyson uses her expert eye for colour to stunning effect. The luxurious wool and silk threaded carpets are works of art in themselves, designed to complement and ground any luxurious interior scheme. ‘Concentrating solely on colour, the subtlety and peacefulness of my Graduation collection will allow the designs to work seamlessly with any surroundings, just as a soft watercolour painting would. A real departure from my previous Angles collection, this year I have enjoyed going back to basics, using colour play and wool as my canvas to evoke the beauty of nature’s landscapes. Importantly, my

designs for this collection can be made entirely bespoke to the colour choices of my clients. They can simply pick the palette and we can make it happen.’ The designs feature Dyson’s signature tonal grading and integrate fine silk elements that not only add a haze to the ombre effects but also a luxurious twist to the two-thirds wool creations. Plumberry features an ombre effect of rich hedgerow hues, reminiscent of damsons, ripening plums and blackberries, and graduating in colour to the deepest purple of sloe berries. Heliotrope transitions from the richest indigo via cerise to a deep framboise, creating an uplifting ombre effect. Verdigris is sea cove like, recreating the patina of aged bronze, its deep metallic tones melding gently into turquoise. Cassata exudes the colours of the Sicilian dessert, from greenish-yellow chartreuse to jade and every shade in-between. Both Ingots, with its dusky raspberry ground, and Impulse with its soft lilac, feature grading in an unusually striking way: bars of bronze silk threads gently undulate to become soft rose and white gold and back again, forming central and border motifs respectively. Designed as a 3m runner, Topaz is like a tranquil pathway stretching out to sea,

alternating shades of silken waves. Pink Fizz is a striking design: against a background of fading ombre greys, fizzy liquid lines of bright fuchsia to soft pink silks are graded and reversed to give the illusion of trickles of movement. Visit: www.deirdredyson.com Topaz

An honour Tristine Hargreaves, National Bed Federation executive director on sustainability, a labour of love and blowing away the cobwebs
Tristine Hargreaves, NBF executive director
Tom Williams, NBF sustainability & circular lead
Since returning to the NBF what has surprised you about being executive director? I have worked in the bed industry for around 29 years, and it’s definitely been a labour of love. The bed industry is comprised of manufacturers and suppliers all in competition with each other, and yet it’s the industry that always comes together in unison to support each other, pave the way forward on critical issues and do the right thing. It never ceases to amaze me
40
Interiors Monthly January 2024
what a fantastic industry this is, and I am honoured to be a part of its history. What can we expect from the NBF in 2024? It has been a tough and challenging climate for the industry over the past few years, having left the EU and surviving a global pandemic, which led to various supply chain issues. We are still navigating the cost of living and consumer confidence issues: however, we continue to support our members
to ensure progression in the areas that will be important for continued growth for the future. We will be striving to raise awareness of the reasons to buy from an Approved NBF member, highlighting the great work that our members do in terms of compliance with the NBF Code of Practice, which is a condition of membership and requires independent verification by means of an audit process. We will continue to monitor the overall levels of compliance in the industry through our due diligence testing programme, which measures the level of compliance in key areas such as flammability and trade descriptions, and highlight the reasons to buy from an NBF Approved member. Sustainability continues to be an important area for the industry,

Members must comply with the Code of Practice
and we will be helping our members on their eco-design journeys by use of the NBF Eco-Design Toolkit, designed specifically for the bed industry. Support will be available from our sustainability and circular economy lead, Tom Williams, to help members start measuring where they are now and encourage them to take the right steps to improve their sustainability credentials and be business ready for the future. Is the industry doing enough on recycling and sustainability? The industry has been quite active in this area for a number of years. We encourage all our members to start their sustainability journeys and are conscious that businesses will be at different stages of progression. The NBF launched Pledge for Our Planet, where members are asked to sign up to the pledge on a voluntary basis. The pledge is asking for commitment from the member to start measuring where they are, and to look at making business improvements to help them improve over the course of time, with different goals for different stages of their journey. Members can use the Eco-Design Toolkit to help them conduct a self-assessment of their product. With milestones to aim for, the NBF will be supporting its members to reach the milestones and look at what resources could help them in any areas where they need more help. Sustainability is a journey, and it is important for a business to set goals that align with its values and deliver improvements and the NBF is committed to helping our members achieve this. Is it prepared for a mandatory take-back and recycle scheme, which will surely come? The NBF has been involved in projects looking at EPR schemes for mattresses and was eagerly awaiting the publication of the UK Government’s waste prevention plan last year. Whilst the government
42
Interiors Monthly January 2024
National Bed Month is in March
has not committed to any timescale on mandatory EPR schemes at this time, the NBF is focusing on helping members with their eco-design journeys and looking at other evolving legislation on sustainable products and digital product passports to ensure we are ready and prepared for what may come in future. Are retailers and manufacturers doing enough to get across the message of the benefits of a good night’s sleep to shoppers? A good night’s sleep is essential to everyday life – of that there is no doubt. My favourite quote is ‘laugh and the world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone.’ I am not sure of the origin of that quote, but in my opinion, never a truer word spoken! Sleep has become such a ‘hot topic’ over the last few years. There are many features on sleep nowadays in newspapers, magazines, on social media, radio and even TV. What we need to
continue doing as an industry is to remind consumers of the importance of having the right bed and mattress to help them achieve the best night’s sleep possible. We know that choosing a new bed or mattress is still a bit of a minefield and despite the proliferation of ‘try before you buy’ offers, it is still classed as a considered purchase. The NBF continues to promote National Bed Month which takes place in March each year, and retailers are actively encouraged to get involved and to support this. We are also supporting The Sleep Charity with its work in this area. What do you do to relax? Time with family is important to me, but work/life balance is also about being able to switch off and relax and have some ‘me time’. I will often head to the coast for a seaside stroll. Being near the east coast, it can be quite bracing, but it helps to blow the cobwebs away. Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Komfi Unity
Richard Gretton, GNG commercial director discusses developments planned for the next 12 months ‘Having joined GNG Group in the summer of 2023, my first six months have been something of a baptism of fire given how busy we are, both responding to ever-growing customer demand and also innovating our products to ensure we stay at the forefront of the sector, but it’s been extremely satisfying. ‘We had a really successful 12 months of growth last year. As ever, we have kept a close eye on new product development, with our creative new product development team continuing to innovate to provide a selection of affordable options to meet the changing needs of the domestic market. Our agent team has also done a brilliant job of driving organic growth, generating a number of new account openings. We’ve also been boosted by the marked growth of our vacuum-packed Komfi Unity range, and the introduction of our new KomfiMed mattresses. ‘KomfiMed marks another important milestone: with our heritage as an approved supplier to the NHS, we’ve developed a range that features supportive, medically proven foam to give excellent spinal alignment and relieve stress on joints. ‘We were proud that in KomfiMed’s first showing, we were named finalists in the Bed Product of the Year category at the NBF Awards. further demonstrates that the unique combination of medically proven foam, TrueGel technology and the use of sustainable materials such as Ecofoam is resonating with retailers. With nearly 100 floor models in place and on the way, we have a steady flow of repeat consumer orders coming in. ‘Accredited as a carbon neutral company, green innovation remains a focus. We are always exploring new materials and methods, and strengthening our CSR strategy to ensure that sustainability is at the heart of how we manufacture, source and deliver. Our aim is to continue to increase the use of Ecofoam in all our products, for both the consumer and
contract markets, and to introduce new methods and machinery to limit any carbon footprint. ‘Looking ahead, we have lots to come across multiple sectors, but all initiatives will be innovative, and have attention to detail and sustainability at their core. We are committed to offering great value and comfort to the consumer, and providing our retail partners with clear simple messages. With significant new product introductions underway, we will continue to build our product and pricing architecture, all with an eye to delivering innovation and value, as well as striving to further increase capacity and efficiency.’ Tel: 01924 950 300

New Eden
The mattresses feature up to 13 plant-based materials
Plant-based fibres are at the heart of Hypnos’ latest collection Aimed at consumers looking to make more healthy and sustainable choices, Hypnos’ latest mattress range, the Eden Project Collection, will soon be making an appearance in stores. Created in collaboration with the Eden Project, the global movement working with nature to respond to the planetary emergency, Hypnos has created three seasonal-turn pocket sprung mattresses using ethically sourced plant-based fibres. Designed to work in partnership with nature, these plant fibres, many of which can be found in the Eden Project’s biomes in Cornwall, have natural characteristics that help promote healthy sleep and comfort, and boast their own comfort-enhancing properties of
48
Interiors Monthly January 2024
durability, breathability, moisture absorption and thermo-regulation. The range comprises the Rainforest, Mediterranean and Wild Cornwall mattresses which feature up to 13 plant-based materials, including new banana, orange and pineapple fibres. It also features a soft, innovative seaweed-infused viscose sleep surface, known to release antioxidants and vitamins to the skin. Newly sourced as an upholstery material for mattresses, the fruit fibres are made from the plant’s stem, creating a soft bast fibre that is bleach-free, lightweight, bio-degradable, moistureabsorbing and durable. There are also responsive layers of Talalay latex tapped from rubber trees, which is seven times more breathable than foams or other latex products and is naturally mouldresistant, antibacterial, durable, biodegradable and VOC-free. Each mattress features Hypnos’ new 10-turn ReActivePro DUO pocket spring system for a luxurious, responsive feel. Each spring layer engages separately, depending on weight and size: first the top layer, then the second, providing a graduated feel and cushioned support. Hypnos is one of only a few carefully chosen licensing partners to work with the Eden Project, a unique partnership that champions community support, sustainable living, education and product design. The collection will help generate revenue for the Eden Project and its
mission to respond to the planetary emergency by respecting the natural world, protecting wild places and repairing damaged spaces. ‘We’re delighted to partner with Hypnos to create this unique and innovative collection that aligns perfectly with our mission to demonstrate that people are part of – not apart from – nature. We have recently undertaken a rebrand to communicate our mission to encourage working with nature to respond to the planetary emergency, by respecting, protecting and repairing the natural world,’ says Tracey Smith, Eden Project commercial manager. ‘As we celebrate our 120th year, we are pleased to further strengthen our partnership with the Eden Project by creating an exclusive collection that encompasses our core values: inspiring people to create beautiful yet sustainable home spaces, and protecting the environment through the use of responsibly designed products,’ says David Baldry, Hypnos Group md. ‘Hypnos has a long history of innovation and quality, and we are proud to continue to inspire and enable people to sleep more sustainably. Thanks to the carefully selected, natural plant-based materials we’ve combined to create this collection, customers can achieve a comfortable and restful night’s sleep, with the reassurance that integrity and wellbeing are at the heart of what we do.’ Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

Nordic inspiration Olos looks to bring harmony to the bedroom The Olos collection by Mauro Lipparini is inspired by Nordic design and shares a modernity. The sober details of the curved wood represent the outer sections of the bed and their design extends into the elliptical, naturally enveloping headboard. It has a removeable cover, bronze feet and four mattress sizes. In its formal simplicity the bedside table’s curved wood gives the top a sense of sophistication and lightness, while the whole piece is supported by long slender legs that give character to the outline. The bench is notable for its generous padding, but the attribute that catches the eye is the curved detail in the curved wood – the thread that runs through the collection. It has a removable cover. Completing the collection is the pouf, with its generous padding and curved wooden base that slightly raises it off the ground. It is available in fabric, eco-leather, vintage eco-leather and leather. Visit: www.bonaldo.com

In selecting the finalists, the jury paid particular attention to the design, quality and exquisite craftsmanship of the handmade rugs. ‘Competition this year is fierce as there are some outstanding rugs up for awards. Two decades of co-operation will be marked with new collections New and updated products will be launched by award-winning German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann at the January Furniture Show. Five new ranges, including three premium VIP, will make their UK debut at the show after prototypes were enthusiastically received in Europe in the Autumn. As with all Wiemann products, the trademark is to offer a total bedroom solution to suit any home. Among the product updates is a new wood finish which will be available immediately on select ranges: Nordic Oak. The company is expecting it to be an instant hit. Eighteen Wiemann collections will be on show, including Monaco and Denver, which were popular choices throughout 2023 as buyers recognised Wiemann’s commitment to driving increased value for retailers. There will be something for all price points, with products that ooze functionality, look beautiful and represent great value for money. Denver, a sliding VIP range, has been acknowledged for its flexibility, recognising the ability to create many different looks from one core. Monaco comes in four VIP versions: 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000. The range continues to consistently head Wiemann’s bestseller list. ‘We have some fantastic new products lined up for launch in January, plus some updates to existing collections. All Wiemann products are known for their excellent design, quality and value and are backed up with our five-star customer support service,’ says Simon Hewitt, md of Wiemann’s UK and Ireland agent Litmus Furniture. Wiemann has recently celebrated 20 years of working with Litmus Furniture in the UK, and the show will be an opportunity to reflect on achievements to date and look to the future. ‘Over the last two decades we’ve seen Wiemann’s sales in the UK and Ireland grow twenty-fold. Ravello Pillowtop
Revamped product development has brought further success The Shire Bed Company, established in 1997, is an A-rated NBF manufacturer and winner of major industry awards including NBF Product of the Year. In May last year, Shire Beds made a strategic move to disrupt the market in the traditional mattress sector. It appointed Stuart Hibbert as coo and embarked upon a period of growth and transformation. In less than a year the company has increased its market share and has a greater presence on the high street, a major aim of the strategic changes it put into place. By focusing on innovation and analysing market trends, Shire Beds developed products that have expanded its presence in the traditional handcrafted mattress sector. Shire Beds’ offering of own-label branded options for retailers ensures retailer protection and a higher return on their margins. In an increasingly
Ravello 1,500
76
Interiors Monthly January 2024
competitive market, high street retailers have particularly welcomed this option. Shire Beds’ product offering has also seen a radical transformation. It now has a greater offering of quality hand side-stitched mattresses. The highly successful Capri and Ravello ranges are all traditional hand side-stitched pocketsprung tufted mattresses. With comfort layers designed for firm support in Capri and medium soft support in Ravello, the wide offering covers a range of comfort requirements. Capri and Ravello are available in matching or contrasting tape edging. Spring counts range from 1,000 to 9,000. Natural wool, silk and cashmere fillings come as standard in all options above the 1,000. The Pillowtop versions are available in 3,000, 5,000 and 7,000 spring counts, making these the ultimate luxury option in the hand side-stitched range. Shire Beds has a product offering that
is one of the most varied in specification and price points in the industry. It includes the latest Como and Milan collections. Como is a tufted pocketsprung range, while Milan has two rows of hand side-stitching on the border, with a micro-quilted top panel enhanced by wool, silk, cashmere and cotton to offer a more contemporary look to that of traditional tufted mattress. This range is available with a 1,500 and 3,000 pocket spring option. Shire Beds saw success at the Bed Show with its encapsulated pillowtop Sona and micro-quilted Zen ranges. The Artisan range, which includes the bestseller Picasso encapsulated gel memory pocket, continues to perform. The development of all these ranges has been meticulous. The differentiation of feels was achieved through regular testing and market feedback, so when the latest products were launched they were an immediate success. ‘We have achieved growth through innovation and product development. Stuart has been instrumental in this area. By working closely with director Sajid Butt we have developed some real winners,’ says Fara Butt, Shire Beds director. ‘The January Furniture Show will see The Shire Bed Company unveil further products, including a new range of quality mattresses as well as trend-led headboards, divans and ottomans. With a commitment to sustainable manufacturing the new products will be ground-breaking in this area.’ Visit: www. shirebeds.co.uk

Integration
The Iconography team has developed OMNIS Retail
Many aspects of modern day-to-day furniture retailing can be streamlined ‘In November we were proud to go live with leading Minerva member Haskins Furniture, which is now using our new unified commerce platform – OMNIS Retail. Haskins had decided to move away from a disjointed, inefficient and insecure website integrated with a legacy furniture retail system. OMNIS provides it with a coherent platform for modern omni-channel retailing and delivers ecommerce, EPoS, CRM and a suite of head office and retail operations management functionality – all running on one database, thus streamlining many aspects of modern day-to-day furniture retailing,’ says Wayne Robins, Iconography md. ‘For instance, product catalogue creation and maintenance happens once and is used online and in-store to full effect. In-store OMNIS acts as both an EPoS and as a tool for providing potential customers with product information
78
Interiors Monthly January 2024
such as options and dimensions together with availability, lead times and location. The ecommerce front end is unrivalled in terms of its flexibility to enable retailers to present and deliver their brand and products in multiple ways. ‘Superb ecommerce visual merchandising tools deliver engaging product layouts, and intelligent functionality means product sequencing, overlays (for example new, sale and bestseller) and associations (upsells and cross sells) can be automated based on rule sets, to drive conversions and efficiency by cutting hours of routine work for the ecommerce team. ‘OMNIS offers unified order processing, as all orders – whether they come via the website, store or over the phone – end up in the same pot in real time to be reviewed and actioned. This means that customer special orders can be easily collated and placed with
appropriate suppliers via the native ONMIS purchase ordering functionality and managed through the whole process, keeping customers fully in the loop at each stage.’ Incoming deliveries can be viewed and planned in the calendar using the warehouse module. Customer special orders and stock items can then be scanned in on receipt against purchase orders and put in the warehouse using the system, with relevant labels printed and applied to items, with locations and subsequent movement within the business managed and recorded. ‘Products coming into the warehouse to fulfil a customer order can be added to delivery runs and checked for outstanding balances to be paid, before being picked using the delivery schedule features within OMNIS. The system produces picking lists and provides flexible lorry management to enable items to be moved between lorries and also packed in the correct sequence for the delivery run they are on. ‘OMNIS has full order history management and CRM. Every interaction on a customer order is logged and recorded. Notes, actions and follow-ups can be added to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction. All the moving parts of a leading furniture business, from customer service tickets to printed price tickets in-store, are visible in and managed by OMNIS, providing oversight and insight throughout.’ Come and see us on Hall 1, Stand G25. SHOW GUIDE Borden round dining table
Products galore
Geo four-door sideboard
Gallery Direct’s furniture offer will grow by 50% alongside new textiles Gallery Direct will kick off 2024 with the launch of its new collection which features a larger selection of furniture, along with soft furnishings including around 70 new cushions, throws and rugs, all designed in-house by Gallery Direct to offer exclusive styles. ‘We’re incredibly excited about all the new products. Our furniture catalogue already offers a wide selection, catering for a range of price points, as well as giving customers a great variety of designs to choose from, and the new collection extends this even further, expanding our catalogue by around 50%. It includes full coordinating ranges and individual occasional pieces, crafted from an array of materials, including wood, in different beautiful finishes, coloured glass, marble, and metal,’ says James Hudson, Gallery Direct commercial director. One of the new furniture ranges is Geo, which has been developed to highlight the use of geometric design, with a nod towards retro style. The cabinet pieces feature circular shaping on the doors, echoed on the tops of the table legs and the rounded table ends. Geo is made using oak veneers and solids, where

practical, with a natural matt finish. Gallery’s successful Borden sees a range extension with the addition of a round dining table, along with occasional tables and an open display unit. Offering contemporary design, Borden is crafted from solid acacia wood with a warm natural finish that shows off the beautiful grain of the timber. The pieces feature soft curved ends on the table legs and the uprights of the display unit, and rounded edges on the tops and shelves to echo this. The new textiles collection includes a selection of cushions and throws, including a range of Bohemian styles combining on-trend geometric designs with handcrafted Indian looks. Some of these feature jacquard designs coupled with tufted handwork – a perfect mix of classic and contemporary. There is also a new range of rugs, including some made from New Zealand lambs’ wool. ‘We’re confident 2024 is going to be a fantastic year for us,’ says Hudson. ‘We have an amazing team. The supply chain head office team and overseas offices were pleased to achieve hundreds of price drops for 2024 across our
catalogue. We’re delighted to have Lizzie Sladen, product director, back from her maternity leave. Our talented in-house team of designers, photographers and stylists, led by Michael Baxendale, who has just been promoted to design director, did an excellent job in 2023 and are working away ready for 2024. ‘We can’t wait to show the new collection to customers old and new. The sales team is holding an At Home event at our Chesterfield showroom in January, just one of a series planned for the year, so contact them to book an appointment. And we’ll be exhibiting at JFS and Spring Fair, so come along to see us.’ Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Warehouse efficiency is increased
Essential
Software improves warehouse management, boosting efficiency for retailers Ordorite has been providing retailers with essential software features to help their businesses run efficiently and successfully for nearly two decades. Automation has long been seen as a ‘nice to have’ for furniture retailers, but with more than 92% of Ordorite users reporting immediate business efficiencies after implementation of the software, is this still the case? ‘One of Ordorite’s key warehouse management capabilities is geared towards preventing lost stock and saving staff time during the stocktaking process. The system allows all stock barcodes to be scanned and, once this is completed, automatically compares stock scanned with the existing inventory and reports any discrepancies. The Ordorite warehouse management system transforms painstaking stockcounting processes, slashing the time required, negating human error and allowing discrepancies to be swiftly recognised and investigated – saving businesses countless amounts of time and money,’ says Darren Lee, Ordorite business development director (UK). ‘Another feature of Ordorite’s warehouse management is its powerful stock-picking functionality and automation. The stock-picking feature helps retailers see an end to infuriated
88
Interiors Monthly January 2024
customers who’ve received incomplete or incorrect orders, in addition to the mounting costs of failed deliveries, by using automation to make sure the correct order leaves the warehouse every time. Ordorite’s stock-picking feature works to ensure that no orders leave the warehouse with missing or incorrect boxes, by ensuring that all deliveries are correctly scanned out of the warehouse: the system alerts the user should any duplicate or wrong items be scanned out with any order, or if items are missing.’ Ordorite allows retailers to achieve fully digital warehouses, meaning access to stock movements; barcoding and box management; multi-warehouse configurations; warehouse pick lists and loading lists; product lifecycle traceability, and stocktaking at the click of a button on a PC, tablet or smartphone. Ordorite is cloud-based and can be accessed at anytime, anywhere, so that business owners and managers can look after their businesses on-the-go. ‘Warehouse management is one core and highly efficient area of the Ordorite software. We hear time and time again how this functionality has been transformational when it comes to a retailer’s operational efficiency across their warehouse teams. Ordorite
has more than 20 years of experience in retail. Our key focus is on automation and end-to-end business management to improve processes within furniture retail businesses.’ Ordorite will be in exhibiting at JFS, Hall 4 Stand A12. Visit: www.ordorite.com

Partnerships Working together is at the heart of Guardsman’s approach ‘Did you know that Guardsman was the first company to offer market-leading furniture protection plans? These plans have been expertly developed over the years as the market and consumer demand grows. As a regulated insurance product, Guardsman recognises the importance of regulatory adherence and oversight so that the product and our retail partners meet the requirements of the FCA. Regulatory focus is now an intrinsic part of the insurance world, including the furniture protection plan market, so we have to embed it into our everyday work and protect everyone we partner with in the industry,’ says Lyndon Willshire, Guardsman commercial director. ‘The FCA ensures stability in the market, but also protects customers from making wrong or ill-informed decisions with their insurance purchases, so our job is to make sure every single person who buys a protection plan through our retail partner buys the right product, at the right price to meet their needs. ‘Retailers look to us as the industry experts to provide them with the tools and support and help them navigate through new processes such as the FCA principle of Consumer Duty and its importance in the retail environment. It’s our job to ensure how they can ensure that best practice is always performed. We continually ensure our knowledge of the FCA and industry

changes is always up to date, so we can prepare for these changes ahead of time and provide the necessary support and advice to the retail market. We don’t just offer this advice to the retailers we partner with, we want to be the voice to the wider market so that everyone is prepared for the changes in good time, and with the most accurate and knowledgeable advice we can give.’ As Guardsman enters its 109th year of trading, Willshire says he is feeling very positive about what’s to come. ‘Working with an A-rated insurer really puts us in a strong position with our
retail partners. It fully understands our business and the direction we want to take it, and having a collaborative approach has allowed us to unlock the potential for our business and for the retailers. Having a strong and stable underwriting partner provides certainty for us, our retailers and the customers. ‘We are also thrilled to be continuing our partnership with HSL, a retailer we have been working with for more than 10 years. It has extended its partnership with us to continue as its supplier for furniture protection plans and ancillary products. It is relationships like this that really put us ahead of the competition: but we are not complacent and will continue to work hard to ensure these relationships are nurtured and are a real partnership. ‘We are in a strong position for 2024 with exciting plans and developments for the business, with the full backing of our significant parent company, Amynta. This would also not be possible without all the team pulling together: from the sales team out on the road training and supporting our retail partners, to the staff at head office working through customer claims, and the networks out there at the coal face, working hard to repair furniture.’ Tel: 07508 007 786

Beds now face more testing
Testing requirements for beds have changed Bed designers and manufacturers often turn to SATRA for assistance during the design and product-proving process. Before new beds are released onto the market, designers and manufacturers are likely to be interested in the safety, strength and durability of the prototype product and how it performs during simulated use. To supply such information, SATRA has for many years tested to the original EN 1725 standard for ‘Domestic furniture. Beds and mattresses. Safety requirements and test methods’, which was published in 1998 – 25 years ago. Since then, there have been technical discussions about updating and improving this standard, and an updated version was published in December. EN 1725:2023 ‘Furniture – Beds – Requirements for safety, strength and durability’ covers all adult beds (including beds that fold away), but not medical beds, high beds or bunk beds, which are covered by their own specific standards. The main differences from the 1998 version are: the introduction of requirements for non-domestic use, to establish whether the product is fit for use in locations such as hotels and B&Bs; the inclusion of requirements for guest beds that are to be used on an occasional basis – for example, folding beds or a trundle bed which is stored underneath the main bed when not in use; the introduction of test methods
114
Interiors Monthly January 2024
covering the durability of electrically operated bed mechanisms. This will utilise a test dummy of 110kg, with which the bed will be tested for 5,000 cycles from its initial position to its second position and back to the start; test methods that apply horizontal loads and forces, including testing of headboards attached to the main bedframe have also been introduced; there are more in-depth safety requirements: the new standard specifies edges should not be sharp and be free from burrs. In addition, where there are holes in tubular and rigid components, emphasis is now placed on potential shear and compression points. The standard also covers entanglement hazards such as pulls, cords and similar.
Monofilament threads are not to be used; the additional durability testing of mechanisms for lifting bed bases and sofa-bed functions and the introduction of information on the product’s usage, care and maintenance, as well as (where applicable) assembly instructions and information on size and maximum weight of the recommendation mattress. The revised standard is now more comprehensive, factoring in more stresses applied in the tests and expanding the scope of the standard to cover products not previously covered. SATRA will soon be offering testing to this new standard as part of the suite of furniture and flammability testing available to its customers. Email: furniture@satra.com

Ease the pressure Save money, headaches and backache The festive party season is often a sharp reminder of how vulnerable flooring is. Stilettos and flooring can equal ‘Ouch!’ with dents, scrapes and scars. The same is true with furniture. Unprotected flooring can be ruined in seconds by heavy furniture. Carpets and the most robust real wood, laminates and tiles face a relentless battle. Home and hybrid working has accelerated flooring destruction years ahead of its due lifespan. Home office and dining chairs scraping back and forth cause damage every day. Quick, easy and cheap solutions mean your New Year’s resolution can be to protect your floor more in 2024. The secret is cushioning under the feet of your furniture, and it can save you and your clients from the cost hassle of repairing or replacing flooring. Family-run Stroolmount has protected customers’ flooring since 2007. While others may skimp on quality, Stroolmount insists on better protection, with a hefty 5mm thickness to its self-adhesive felt. The quality Furni-glides mean that really heavy furniture – including recliner sofas and chairs – can simply glide over

all flooring. This is vital to ensure proper cleaning to prevent build-up of dust mites. Stroolmount is also the exclusive supplier of award-winning QuickClick interchangeable glides. So furniture can easily be moved between carpet and tiles and hard wood flooring in different rooms – just by clicking in the new type of glide. ‘With penny protection, it’s daft not to protect yourself and your customers,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘I’ve saved customers thousands of pounds in insurance claims, saved the hassle of refitting flooring and saved hefty hikes in next year’s insurance premiums. ‘We can help fitters too. Moving heavy furniture back onto a new floor is fraught with danger. But the magic layer in our Move-It Pads means it floats effortlessly. Kelly Hoppen
Kelly Hoppen reveals her interior design trends for the coming year ‘Design has changed massively over the years, especially since Covid. People have become more experimental and have been more invested in changing the feel and look of their homes. ‘The functions of homes are ever changing, and the chances are some
rooms need to serve more than one purpose: a spare room that doubles as a gym, or a dining area that doubles as a home office. To achieve this, it’s important to plan your furniture and storage options and layouts thoroughly, following a simple, neutral colour
scheme to create different zones for different activities that seamlessly flow together. Interchangeable rooms and the abundance of textures have in fact made for incredibly luxurious interiors. ‘Art has played a huge factor, with people collecting photography,

art and sculptures. Reassessing your home at the beginning of the year enables you to look at objects and art that you love with fresh eyes. Black-and-white photographs hold a certain old-school glamour which looks stylish in any setting, and to display these, I would hang larger pieces on the wall with smaller ones propped up along shelves. This is a great way to create that wow factor in your home, whilst giving you the flexibility to easily move things around if necessary. ‘Vintage lighting and chandeliers have had a big resurgence. Instead of crystal lighting I have seen and used more Murano-type glass and Italian designs. Lighting is one of the most important aspects of design, and a well-designed lighting scheme will elevate a home like no other element. Vintage decorative lighting such as chandeliers are great when hung in an entrance, down a staircase or over a round dining table to elevate a space and grab attention. With the endless options of theatrical lighting, you can add a sense of drama to any area in the home, whilst using hidden and more concealed lighting and other task lighting for practical needs. ‘Marble is the number one hard finish, but now with powerful markings – unlike the past few years where it has been all about neutral. Marble is not just for kitchen worktops and bathroom

flooring. One thing I love to do to achieve that wow factor in an entrance is to use black-and-white geometric marble for the flooring to create a feeling of bold glamour. Alternatively, you can use other marbles such as Arabescato or Viola with strong markings to add

touches of marble in other areas of your home, such as marble shelving that can be used to display ornaments and art. The key is to contrast the marble with concrete and more down-to-earth finishes so it’s not too over the top.’ Visit: www.kellyhoppeninteriors.com
