Record-breaking performances Outrageous sales figures, a long way to go for eve shareholders and farewell to an old-timer Yes, inflation is helping to keep the value of furniture and flooring sales historically high, but January’s official figures are quite remarkable. Furniture and lighting sales were at record levels for the month since ONS began monitoring sales in 1986, and it was the 20th best month overall. And these are completed transactions not orders. Both DFS and ScS have said their order books are millions and millions of pounds larger than normal thanks to the post-lockdown boom, and I’d expect this to continue to show in monthly figures for a while yet. The question remains when will this unwind? The figures for flooring are even more outrageous: up on December 2021, January 2020 and January 2019 (by almost two-thirds in this case). Here, shorter lead times suggest consumers are still buying. Of course we know there are higher costs of living to come, especially with the price of oil leaping after the invasion of Ukraine. eve Sleep shareholders would have been delighted to see the share price jump by two-thirds on the news that DFS will start selling its mattresses and bed frames, initially online. Sadly even after that, shares were just 2.9p. They floated at 103p in May 2017 before peaking at 130.5p that December. Alas, poor Not Knowingly Undersold, we knew it well. Well, we didn’t really. The decision by John Lewis to drop its price promise in the summer has been a long time coming (even its review took two years). NKU may have been billed as a ‘cherished sign of trust’ but what made sense in 1925 never made sense today with white-labelling of many products, and when its terms and conditions were a bit vague and didn’t apply to online rivals. I once had a price match on a cooker, despite the fact that Argos didn’t physically have them on display – supposedly one of the conditions. And for years, every weekend, as Debenhams and House of Fraser slashed prices on make-up, John Lewis had to follow suit and see profits walk out the door. It is about time NKU exited the stage.

Furniture sales see January record as flooring booms January saw the value of furniture sales at its highest level for the month since records began, while flooring sales were more than 50% above pre-pandemic levels. Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that sales of furniture and lighting in England, Scotland and Wales were worth £1,316,682,000 during the month: the highest figure since ONS records began in 1986. The performance was the 20th best month of 433 since then. Sales were 7.15% lower than December 2021, 51.3% higher than January 2021 (when when stores were closed), 7.7% lower than January 2020 and 17.8% higher than January 2019. Flooring sales leapt on all measures, as it recorded the best-performing January since 2014. At £177,981,000, sales were 28.9% higher than December 2021, 412% up on January 2021, 54.88% higher than January 2020 and 66.5% higher than January 2019. It was the 200th best month since January 1986, and compares with £198,763,000 generated in January 2014, the 111th best month. The figures do not allow for inflation and are subject to revision.
Sales growth continued
Prescott to head Greendale Eamonn Prescott, former Adam Carpets sales and marketing director, is to be the next chief executive of flooring buying group Greendale Carpets & Floorings. He will join Greendale at the beginning of May and will assume full responsibility when Rob Harding retires in mid-June. Prescott has more than 20 years of experience in the flooring industry, including in retail and 11 years at Adam Carpets, where he introduced a number of award-winning marketing initiatives.
Thompson takes Made reins Philippe Chainieux, Made ceo has stepped down for family reasons, with Nicola Thompson, Made chief operating officer becoming interim ceo. He had been at the company for nine years, the past five as ceo. Susanne Given, Made chair described her as ‘an exceptional colleague and impressive leader’. ‘It is with sadness I have to pause my professional activities to take care of my family. I am confident that everything is in place to achieve our long-term ambition,’ says Chainieux. ‘I cannot emphasise enough how instrumental NIcola has been in growing our business, through designing and implementing our strategic plan. I am leaving the business safely in her very capable hands.’’
Tough start to year as interiors inflation jumps yet again Furniture inflation leapt in January, while flooring saw another increase. Consumer Price Index data from the ONS shows that household furniture prices were 14.1% higher in January than in 2021. This is an increase from 12.5% in December.

Interiors Monthly March 2022
Carpets and other floorcoverings saw prices rise from 7.8% to 8.1%. All nine of the ONS’ furniture, furnishings and carpets indices saw an increase, including lighting and outdoor furniture. Of these lighting witnessed the lowest increase of 5.7%, but this
was up on December’s 4.1%. Inflation for household textiles was flat at 3.3%, despite furnishing fabrics and curtains seeing a jump from 0.9% to 4%. The overall Consumer Price Index rose from 5.4% to 5.5%, while the Retail Price Index rose from 7.5% to 7.8%.

Smiths take Arlo & Jacob independent again Upholstery chain Arlo & Jacob has become independent again after less than a year under TCM Living’s ownership. Mark, former TCM Living chief executive, and Julie Smith bought Arlo & Jacob from administration in May 2020, before it became part of TCM Living in June 2021. TCM Corporation owns Alstons Upholstery, Ashley Manor Upholstery, AMX Design and Alexander & James. ‘After an initial period of successful incumbency within group, both Mark and Pimol Srivikorn, TCML chairman felt that the interests and growth ambitions of both entities were very much best served apart – with TCML’s focus being on volume-driven business and global expansion, the antithesis of Arlo’s very British and fashionably slower, choicecentric and individualistic model,’ says the retailer. ‘Mark very much wanted the talent he had nurtured and believed had helped him stand apart from his competitors close. Partnering with him therefore to head up this next exciting chapter are his artist and stylist wife Julie; Michelle White, marketing, brand and creative director; Simon Wilson, finance director; Anthony Scarborough, e-commerce director, and Donna Pitchford, executive project manager, with Lisa Broad continuing as md.’
John Lewis ends price pledge John Lewis is to axe its Never Knowingly Undersold pricing promise. The chain says it no longer fits with how consumers shop as more sales move online and the offer doesn’t apply to purchases from online-only retailers. It will be ended in the summer. Instead the company will invest £500m on lowering prices, a 25% rise on its 2021 commitment. ‘Customers are tightening their belts and we’re responding so John Lewis is more affordable for every customer, every day whether

shopping in-store or online,’ says Pippa Wicks, John Lewis executive director. ‘Never Knowingly Undersold has been a cherished sign of trust for John Lewis for a century but it doesn’t fit with how customers shop today as a growing number of purchases are made online,’ ‘Our new £500m investment means that all our customers can trust they are getting the quality, style and service they have come to expect from John Lewis at great value price,’ she added.

The Arlo & Jacob team
‘I’ve always worked best in a partnership and I have hand-picked my team of experts. I’m drawing on close relationships with people I admire and am inspired by and to top it all are thoroughly nice people to boot,’ says Smith. ‘It is important to us that we create furniture and fabric collections that we are proud to have in our home. We are the Arlo customer and we feel at home with the brand’s DNA,’ says Julie Smith.
Celebration planned to honour MCD founder and Headlam chairman Graham Waldron An event is to be held to mark the life of Graham Waldron, MCD founder and former Headlam chairman. TFC for sale in Mammoth production shake-up Mattress manufacturer The Foam Company has put itself up for sale following the loss of its licence to produce Mammoth branded products. Airsprung Beds is to take over the manufacturing of Mammoth’s beds for bricks and mortar retailers – it already makes for the online channel. Both companies say they want to reduce lead times ‘significantly’, while Litmus Furniture will assume responsibility for selling. While Mammoth was a large proportion of TFC’s business, it also owns the Sleepshaper and Sonlevo brands and manufactures various white label and private label products. ‘As a business, we are already well aware of Airsprung’s manufacturing capabilities, commitment to quality, speed of delivery and exemplary customer service standards. It’s important to us that we move forward with a partner that
Production has switched from TFC to Airsprung
shares our own commitment to excellence, attention to detail and rigorous approach to testing and development,’ says Stuart Nutbeen, Mammoth md. ‘Airsprung is proud to have the opportunity to work with Mammoth across its retail channel. We strongly believe we can bring real value to Mammoth’s growing network of retailers by focusing on increased efficiency and reduced lead times. We know that speed of delivery and convenience is a huge driver for the modern consumer,’ says Paul Little, Airsprung Beds deputy md. ‘The agreement will see Mammoth retain the services of all existing staff and maintain the high level of sales support as it looks to deliver on an ambitious growth strategy,’ says a Mammoth spokeswoman. ‘Following the termination of the Mammoth agreement, we have worked closely with our advisers and reached the conclusion that it is in the best interests of all concerned to seek a sale of the business,’ says a TFC statement. ‘The marketing process has commenced, there are a number of seriously interested parties and we anticipate concluding a “pre packaged” administration sale that will not result in a cessation of trade. It is likely the business will enter into administration at some stage as part of that process, and we have registered that intention with the courts. ‘Given that we are not permitted to supply Mammoth mattresses, we have had to make the difficult decision to cease production of all products with immediate effect. However, we do hope for a bright future for all those associated with the business if we are able to secure a sale, and we are focusing all our attentions on achieving that.’
Retail tie-ups for bed brands JYSK has become the latest UK retailer to begin stocking Emma mattresses as the bed brand’s efforts to widen its physical retail footprint continue. JYSK began selling Emma at its German stores in October 2021, then rolled this out to the UK, Republic of Ireland, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. ‘Emma is a brand highly recognised by UK consumers so combining this with our position as the Danish sleep experts we hope to help more customers achieve the good night’s sleep they deserve and provide even more in-store mattress options,’ says Jenny Johnston, JYSK UK & Ireland sales and marketing manager.

Meanwhile, DFS is to begin selling eve Sleep’s mattresses and bed frames online from 3 March before introducing them in-store. Plans are in place to extend the ranges at a later date. ‘Our range of bedroom furniture, including our wide choice of upholstered bedframes, is a key and growing part of our offer. We are delighted to be partnering with eve to add its best-in-class mattresses to our range, to support awareness of our bedroom furniture products; deliver even greater choice for our customers; and provide the opportunity for customers to conveniently add an eve mattress to their DFS furniture order,’ says John Rastall, head of DFS home.

You can never have enough diagnostic tools Detailed moisture readings and copious close-up photographs were not enough to convince the flooring contractor that the problem was due to the installation work that had been done. His first reaction was that the water table was still too high after the river at the end of the customer’s garden had burst its banks, flooding the kitchen and utility room. The insurers had sent a flood restoration team very quickly and dehumidifiers were set into action to suck the moisture out of the floors and walls so the customer and his wife could live back in their beautiful riverside cottage, their home for more than 50 years before the unprecedented weather conditions had evicted them. On my first inspection the customer had directed me to park on the riverbank to the side of his house. The sleepy water meandered along some three feet below, and the path to the back door was slightly uphill. Inside, there was a crunching noise under the LVT as I walked through the utility room and towards the kitchen. An area of the flooring had been taken up by the contractor and the smoothing compound had separated easily from whatever product had been applied to the subfloor. A damp-proof membrane, the contractor had claimed. My trusty moisture meter told the story. The floor was not dry. It wasn’t as wet as one would expect after a flood, but it was typical of a traditional property that would have been built directly onto the soil without a structural damp-proof membrane – they weren’t required until the 1970s. I photographed the readings and took close-ups of the exposed concrete surface where the sparseness of the surface coating could be easily seen. The contractor called in a rep from the compound manufacturer. Not, I hasten to add, any of the well-known
16
Interiors Monthly March 2022
and highly respected suppliers used by the majority of UK floor layers. ‘The water must be coming through the walls,’ said the rep, and he put these comments in writing to the customer, who sent me an anxious email. I was due to visit another property a few miles away so I arranged to drop by and check things again. I always carry two very good moisture meters. One is enough, but in case of doubt I can use the second to doublecheck and forestall the standard response of any doubter: ‘When did you last have that calibrated?’ I have a third meter ready for my retirement. It has a telescopic handle so I can take readings without having to kneel. I keep it in the car boot for the occasional less accessible spot reading, such as when I had to measure the moisture in the floor between dishwasher and preparation table in a commercial kitchen and my arms were simply not long enough to reach. Before my return visit to the worried customer, I received an email announcing the launch of the upgraded version of the meter I use most often. A phone call to a supplier whose warehouse I just
happened to be passing the following day secured me this latest model. My visit to the customer was the first time ever that I had carried out an inspection using four different moisture meters. The only time I’d had that many in the one place before was when running the moisture training courses at FITA, where there is a comprehensive range to allow delegates to try different kinds. I carried out a moisture survey of the floors and the walls in RF mode and pin mode and sent off the photos so the contractor could review his comments. If the contractor had used just one moisture meter before starting the work, rather than assuming the flood restorer’s dry certificate was adequate for LVT flooring, I wouldn’t have become involved. A good moisture meter is not cheap, but it’s less than the cost of just one job failing. I’ve admitted my tool fetish in this column before, but clearly four moisture meters is not excessive after all. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

EXPERIENCES
It’s all turning out nicely! Our correspondent is feeling upbeat but has concerns about future costs THE RETAILER Fludes Carpets If we believe all that we are seeing and reading, things are going well – at present anyway. Sales are up, price increases are settling, and delivery and supply issues seem to be subsiding. Manufacturers are bringing out some new product and we’re seeing carpet ranges re-coloured. Things look set fair for the next three months of business. The long-awaited ‘normality’ is upon us. But is it all too good to be true? Looking further ahead it is very hard to make a judgement on how long settled
to be finished. There is a feeling that business is steady at present, and in the south-east at least, where Fludes Carpets is based, there is plenty of building underway. Although most new homes are purchased with flooring already fitted, the churn in the housing market will create sales opportunities in those being sold on. Easter and the Jubilee holiday will cause a slowdown in flooring sales, and there will be lots of public celebration and little likelihood of seeing hoards of customers in shopping mode. Let’s hope for a rush before
marketing. It’s hard to know which route to go down. An advertising agency once told me they knew that 50% of our advertising was working well and 50% was not – the problem was they didn’t know which 50% it was that was working well! So, the next three months will be a time for looking at the current year for clues as to next year’s sales performance, and some crystal-ball gazing on what costs are likely to be for our business. It is time to get our plans together, sort out the marketing and advertising, and hope that next year will
business will last. The increases in energy, fuel and weekly shopping costs and the National Insurance uplift will all have an effect on the amount of disposable income customers have to spend. And assuming they have some money left to spend, will it go on home improvement or maybe a week’s holiday in the sun instead? There are lots of reasons to be positive. Many of the home improvement projects we have been involved in are being completed in stages, and many still have
and afterwards to compensate us for the potential loss of sales! We are now at the point when we will prepare our overall budget for the next financial year and we are looking closely at the costs related to running the business, and in particular the cost of energy and rates. We know that energy will rise by about 50%, but the rates issue is not clear as yet. It makes it hard to balance a budget. A major issue is the amount of spend on website, media advertising and social media
be less of a challenge than this one. The current financial year has been unsettled, with many factors contributing to the uncertainty: the aftermath of Brexit, the vagaries of the pandemic, price changes and delivery problems. However, the flooring industry has ridden it all, and in the main is emerging in a better position that we started. So well done to everyone. It seems that it really is turning out nicely. Materials matter Recyclability and longevity are key
For furniture manufacturer EMU, materials are what matters. Steel, aluminium and teak form the cornerstones of the majority of its designs. Founded in 1951 as Elettro-Meccanica Umbra, producing transmission equipment for military use, the company soon moved into school and office furniture, before the construction of Italy’s first plasticisation plant meant its designs could survive outdoors. Fast-forward to today and the commitment to manufacture products that last remains as true as when brothers Aldo and Angelo Biscarini
and their brother-in-law Dante Menconi founded the company in Marsciano, near Perugia. EMU still manufactures in Marsciano, where next year should see completion of a 1MW solar panel system, producing more than 400,000 items a year, and selling through more than 1,000 retailers in 85 countries. The Thor collection of chairs takes its inspiration from a traditional country style but the use of steel makes the classic lines appear more modern and more dynamic in shape. Thor also includes an FSC 100% teak version for
the chair and stool seats, which can easily be added to the steel seat at a later stage. The Lyze collection has new, airy, aluminium and steel shapes. The first version of the chair, armchair and lounge chair have an aluminium seat with a back made of intertwined, tubular stainless steel, with the option of adding a teak seat. The aluminium Shine has teak armrests and optional teak seat, while the tubular metal seat and back of Apero are MIG-welded with brass. Visit: www.emu.it

Living Divani has become the latest brand to join the roster of names at the five-star Peninsula Hotel Beijing’s Peninsula Arcade. The space is part of almost 43,000sqft operated by Domus Tiandi at the heart of the hotel, alongside Kartell, Henge, Baxter, Poliform, Minotti, Promemoria, Giorgetti and Salvatori. At the entrance, the visitors are welcomed by an Extrasoft composition

in Cuoietto, visual icon of the brand. This modular sofa, characterised by an informal appearance and soft, cosy and malleable comfort, is surrounded by Tethys satellite C tables with marble top and aluminum trays. Ideal for an intimate self-care corner, the Pebble desk is accompanied by the Nina stool. In a more functional zone, characterised by a fluid and casual
elegance capable of ranging from indoor to outdoor, the sculptural shapes of the Wedge table, inspired by the lightness of an origami, are combined with a mix of seats: from the woven mini Tombolo that reproduces the Cafè armchair with an original greige tubular decoration, to the Rivulet chairs, to the essential and passe partout Maja D, up to the George’s featuring a waxed rope.

In the dining room, which can also be used as an operational and working area, Living Divani proposes a version of the Notes table inspired by Chinese conviviality. Without renouncing to the essential silhouette, the top in different materials and the dynamism of the legs, the Notes table is displayed together with the elegant Era chair. The dialogue between the gunmetal grey painted structure, the backrest and upholstered fabric seat highlights the silhouette, which is so subtle as to appear bold. Notes is completed with a ‘lazy Susan’, inviting sharing and socialisation The Islands offers an elegant freestanding storage opportunity, accessible on various sides through a perimeter of rotating slats. The Galileo mirror, an object in constant equilibrium, is ready to swing to reflect the world in its many facets, while the Ceiba coat hanger by Luis Arrivillaga is a dance of slender structures moving around a central pivot that close and reopen, revealing different points of view and methods of use. The Floyd-Hi bed stands out within the sleeping area. Like the sofa of the same name, it is characterised by the large soft cushions that rest on the lower headboard, creating a pleasant play of heights, joints and textures. It is surrounded by the Track bench in leather, the Moon cylindrical bedside

table in charcoal-dyed oak and the Era Comodino with front and sides proposed in the White Cream lacquered finishing. The Era Scrittoio with graphic lines and refined combinations of material and colour completes the setting. The wooden top, the Quartz Grey lacquered front and sides, the gunmetal grey tubular steel structure and contrasting brass foot are a harmonious composition in the space. The George’s chair has been chosen in the Light version to highlight the graphics of the painted steel structure. The elimination of the superfluous distinguishes the Materica table lamp, a sculpture object that captures a fleeting intuition as a result of free creativity. In the second living area the protagonist is the Floyd-Hi 2 System modular sofa, characterised by the armrest set between the backrest and the seat that delicately bends. This upholstery family allows the creation of fluid and reassuring shapes in space to the desired composition, combined with the Tethys tables. Ideal for a moment of relaxation, the area is completed by the traditional Confident armchairs, whose rounded, enveloping lines perfectly integrate to furnish even contract spaces with personality. The Aero B bar cabinet shares the same lightness as its namesake bookcase,
concealing a storage space enclosed by shutter doors that slide along the entire perimeter, in a lively alternation of full and empty spaces. In the final living area, the livable shapes of the Dumas sofa are combined with the Greene family, raised on a thin foot, where the external shell, structured but soft, welcomes large cushions. The Era table together with the Flap coffee tables enrich the versatility of the environment. The latter, when opened, reveal a functional unit to be used as required. Leaning on the wall, the Grek Box storage units owe their design to the rigor of the thin aluminum sheets. On the wall parades a Light pair, with a table lamp characterised by a graphic and essential silhouette. The Sailor bookcase separates the rooms visually without interrupting the view: the airy lightness of the hexagonal posts contrasts with the tighter rhythm of the slender shelves, in a play of chiaroscuro and craftmanship. The flatweave rugs of the Kumo and the Sin Titulo collections trace captivating graphic patterns on the floor. Meanwhile, the small sculptures of the Styling collection, with their archetypal and contemporary silhouette, embellish tables, consoles and bookcases. Visit: www.livingdivani.it
DESIGN Soapso by Florian Bremer is three soaps, designed as palpable objects, as a playful way to protect yourself. The goal is to give soap a more narrative quality. Although soap is a very old product, its appearance is often very rudimentary and monotonous. Soapso is therefore the ultra-tactile version of a classic that is more important than ever in pandemic times. For children in particular, this product offers a playful way to protect yourself by washing your hands.

Apio by Felix Landwehr is a modular, node-based connecting system for furniture. With just one Apio connecting element and conventional round bars, the user can create three-dimensional structures without using tools. The elements can be positioned anywhere on the bar to permit maximum multi-axial flexibility. The use of mono-materials ensures simple separability, allowing the elements to be returned to the recycling loop.

Babybo by Charlotta Åman is a portable nest that offers a safe environment for babies up to six months. Many baby sleep products contain toxins that may affect babies’ health or fail to take into account their short-term usefulness. Babybo is made entirely of non-toxic, organic materials such as hypoallergenic mycelium foam and banana fibre fabric, which are completely bio-degradable. The compact design converts from sleeping pod to changing pad to playmat.
DESIGN
Powerplace by Philipp Hainke is a flexible charging station for the smart home. It combines an extension cord, portable battery, storage space and multiple charging interfaces in one organised object. It meets the daily need for electricity in our living space and permits the simple electrification of existing interiors by providing charging interfaces.
Clap by François Lafortune is a stackable chair with a storage system, for the office and study environment. It emerged from a reflection on the evolution of the office from the perspective of school, where desks and chairs belong to everyone. Clap keeps your belongings safe while you take a break, thanks to a lock, while ensuring an ergonomic work posture.
Ludo by Teresa Egger is a hybrid of side table and play furniture. Adaptable in one easy move, every 90deg turn opens up a new possibility for interaction: rocker, reading bench, table. The furniture is intended to counter the tendency towards the strict separation of children’s and adult areas of the home by providing functions and an aesthetic that appeal to the entire family. Ludo consists of an outer and scaled inner shell made of moulded plywood, produced in a single pressing.
Dream View Lamp by Lise Vester is a sensory textile lamp that mimics the changing light of the sky. The Dream View Lamp works as a substitute for when we don’t have a view of the outdoors. A rotating textile replicates the transitional colours of the sky throughout the day, giving us an opportunity to synchronise with the time and space we live in. The sensory light aims to improve our mental wellbeing by making space for peaceful and mindful moments where we pause and wonder.
Helia by Stéfanie Kay provides the user with the right light throughout the day. On average, we use artificial light for 90% of our day which, unlike the sun, does not change its colour or intensity, altering the user’s productivity, concentration or quality of sleep or mood. Helia follows the user’s experience throughout the day – from waking up to falling asleep – by varying its intensity and colour. Its modular head enables it to create either a direct light beam or an ambient lamp.
Model L by Tobias Schenk and Nandan Wolfer is a mobile sideboard that invites interaction. Every time something is placed on it, the shelving responds by bending and changing shape according to the object’s weight. The material properties of the sheet metal permit a high degree of elastic deformation, guaranteeing that the shelves retain their bounce even after being loaded for a long period of time. The down-to-earth colouring contrasts with the agile appearance.

DESIGN Trunk by Aleksander Luczak is a system for constructing and connecting individual pieces of furniture. The core element, an aluminium profile, doesn’t just connect individual components to construct a piece of furniture, it can be used to create rows of chairs and tables as well. Trunk is a sustainable system that permits individual combinations. The individual parts can be made of wood or recycled plastic. In the event of damage, the simple construction means that the parts can be conveniently exchanged without having to replace the entire piece of furniture.
Trojan Vacuum by Tobias Bihlmeyer and Ivo Erichsen combines the functionality of a vacuum cleaner with the aesthetic and useful qualities of minimalist furniture design, underscoring the ‘home’ in ‘home appliance’. The focus is on repairability and the use of sustainable materials, resulting in a long-lasting product that recognises it is only in use for 16 minutes per week.
The Folded wall light by Alexandre Fontaine flips and switches on with one intuitive push, as the switch is integrated into the lamp. Its minimalist look emphasises the switching experience to encourage spontaneous interaction. Simply push towards the centre to turn it on and to the extremities to flip it off. The spring effect is achieved through the flexibility of the frame.
Navel by Claudia Otte gives crown glass a new platform. The foundation and inspiration for the Navel tray is a disc of crown glass, which belongs to an old tradition of glassmaking and has a distinctive, navel-like mark at the centre. The frame consists of three curved wooden elements that surround the disc and direct your gaze to the centre. Light can penetrate the surface, creating a playful effect that invites closer contemplation.

Embossing Wood by Hemmo Honkonen is an exploration of a new surface-texturing method for wood. The method is based on the thermohydro-mechanical properties of the natural material and allows easy and cost-efficient texturing of wooden surfaces. Textures that would be too slow and expensive to produce with conventional methods become feasible.
Neozoon by Lukas Heintschel and Kilian Klepper is a portable lamp with suction power made of recyclable material. Thanks to its large suction cup, Neozoon can be attached to virtually any surface in seconds and removed again just as quickly without leaving a trace. Because of the integrated rechargeable battery, it is incredibly mobile and perfect for adventures on the move – or for creative lighting accents at home.

DESIGN Pillar Box by Rasmus Palmgren is a wooden, stackable and playful storage box in two sizes. Inspired by wooden fruit boxes, Pillar Box has a simple construction and can be used in multiple spaces. The round, almost pillar-like corners create a strong design language and framework for the boxes. Each corner has a lens-shaped finish – concave or convex – that makes the stacking easy, elegant and stable. The Pillar Boxes comes in two sizes and in playful colours.

Pur by Sebastian Kommer is a series of furniture and objects based on a system and openness. At the same time, it symbolically addresses the coexistence of nature and industry. The interaction between the solid wood elements and aluminium profiles permits a particularly individual design. The goal is to generate a direct and unique aesthetic via the radical portrayal of the materials, as well as their production and machining processes.
Pebble hangers by Rania Elkalla are made out of Shell Homage, a biomaterial of egg and nut shells. Pebbles are a decorative hanger set for everyday belongings with a secret storage space on the back and sides. It creates a flexible and playful system for organising little things, and you can create the look according to your need and mood. The Pebbles hangers are extruded on different levels and can be partially overlapped to offer a wide range of order. The design is a perfect solution for the hallway, bedroom or office.
Pura by Carolien Janssens is a series of small kitchen appliances powered and controlled via the induction hob, which serves as both energy supply and control system. Integrated temperature, touch and motion sensors permit the tactile, intuitive operation of the smart home objects. The cordless design, completely outsourced interface and a design language borrowed from architecture turn the appliances into aesthetic objects.
Slot by Marie Luise Stein is an adjustable table frame that meets the demands of a constantly changing working and living environment. The additional fifth table leg serves as a central axis that the other four legs are fitted onto, allowing them to be fanned out a full 360deg into any position required. This allows the creation of base frames for tabletops of different sizes, enabling living spaces to be used and created in new ways.

It’s time!
National Bed Month is supported by a variety of marketing materials
March is National Bed Month
With the relaunch of its Introduction to Beds course, new advertising opportunities for NBF Retail Champions, and the biggest awareness month in the bed trade’s calendar, the NBF has had a busy 2022 – and it is only March. Following closures due to the coronavirus pandemic National Bed Month is the first time since 2019 that brick-and-mortar retailers can fully engage with the campaign and all the benefits it can bring to their business. The campaign has a new theme for 2022: ‘Wake Up on the Right Side, with the Right Bed’ #RightSideOfTheBed, and will focus on bed-buying advice to ensure consumers get the right bed for their needs, plus tips on how to care for it to prolong its lifespan, and expert sleep advice from The Sleep Charity. Promoting the health benefits of buying a new, comfortable and

supportive bed, particularly one made by an NBF approved member, is a core message in the campaign. According to the NBF’s latest consumer research the advice is needed: 41% are replacing their old mattresses within five years, with a third citing as a reason that their old bed is worn out and a further 21% that it is uncomfortable. ‘In line with our NBF Green initiative, we are keen to promote the importance of caring for your bed to prolong its lifespan, rather than the less straightforward message of replacing it every seven years. If the bed still provides the comfort and support you need, you should continue to care for it to get the most out of it. Look after your bed, and it will look after you,’ says Simon Williams, NBF head of marketing and membership. An all-new multi-media marketing toolkit is available to ensure that
NBF Retail Champions and NBF members are well-equipped to support their customers. The new video and infographics can be used on social media, the banners on websites and the logo in marketing materials. Print the posters and use the suggested social media copy too. NBF Retail Champions and NBF members have exclusive access to the free downloadable toolkit from the bedfed.org.uk website. ‘For those unfamiliar with our retailer initiative, the NBF Retail Champions Scheme helps consumers identify those retailers who stock predominantly NBF member brands, which have been independently audited to ensure their products are safe, clean and honest. To qualify as a Retail Champion, a store must stock at least 50% of its UK and Irish sourced beds from NBF members. Premier Retail Champion status is for shops that source 100% of their UK and Irish-made beds from NBF members. If you meet these requirements, please apply to our scheme via the NBF website. ‘Over the years, we’ve had hundreds of retailers and manufacturers support National Bed Month in their sales and marketing campaigns. Whether you are fundraising or providing fun
Sleep comes easy when you buy beds made by an approved NBF member
Our vision for the bed industry in 2022 and beyond is clear – we want to make it right. How? By setting standards and driving ethics, transparency and responsibility. By championing excellence in bed-making and selling. By supporting sustainability through the NBF Pledge for the Planet and an ecodesign framework for mattresses. And by educating consumers on how to improve their sleep.

encourage them to apply to the scheme and get fully involved with this fantastic promotional campaign.’ To help staff provide expert advice to customers this National Bed Month, fast-track their bed knowledge with the updated Introduction to Beds course,
which is now free. It is ideal for all individuals joining the bed sector – whether in retail or manufacturing – in sales, buying, customer services or production. Alongside the essential information such as product guidance, major bed brands, relevant legislation and a glossary of industry terminology, there is also up-to-date information about the UK bed market and consumer bed-buying habits, as well as a helpful overview on the NBF Code of Practice. A noteworthy addition to the latest version is an outline of the NBF’s green agenda, covering existing and future NBF projects and advice for businesses making green claims. The downloadable course gives participants more flexibility, allowing them to go at their own pace and to refer to it time and again as their go-to bed manual. At the end, participants can access a certificate of completion and offer their feedback. ‘We would encourage all businesses involved in the UK and Irish bed industry to include this free course as part of their employees’ induction process. It’s packed full of information that will particularly help any new starters and quickly enable them to get up to speed on the world of beds,’ says Williams. Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Bretz is renowned for its bold, pull no punches designs, and Creole, its latest bed, is no exception. Designed by Dagmar Marsetz Dagmar Marsetz, Creole re-stages the oval in a significant way. whichever way pleases: horizontally or vertically, asymmetrical or progressively, tonal or full of contrasts. The wall panels are available in seven lengths and come in a host of different covers and colours. This way, the arches can be used as headboards or as murals. When it comes to creativity, there are no limits at Bretz. Designer Pauline Junglas describes the furniture style as ‘maximally, eclectic, fantastical.’ The experiment with measurements and cliches, and the expansion of boundaries, can be interpreted as a latent rebellious,
but also playful, philosophy. ‘Bretz definitely polarises,’ she says. ‘But there is one thing that all our furniture has in common: they each tell their stories, give wings to the imagination and combine two fundamental themes which, at their core, are contrary: the longing for strange worlds juxtaposes the wish for comfort. But if there is a place where both can exist, then a sense of magic happens. The kind of magic that inspires us every day.’ Visit: www.bretz.com

Congratulations
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Vale Upholstery
In 1947 the Lomax family set up Vale Upholstery in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, manufacturing utility furniture under government regulations and re-covering furniture, with Vale mill giving the company its name. The 1950s saw the first deliveries of upholstery into independent retailers in the north-west of England and by 1962 the company had moved to larger premises in the town to cope with growing orders. The Belle Vue furniture show in Manchester proved a great springboard for attracting retailers from further afield and soon the company was trading throughout the North and
Midlands and later to the rest of the UK. Along the way Barbreck Upholstery was purchased and in 1982 the company moved to a 60,000sqft building in Mytholmroyd, near Hebden Bridge. Bridgecraft was bought in 2000 and all production combined on this site. Vale and Bridgecraft have a combined history of furniture making of 160 years, producing quality upholstery to a high standard. Designs new and old can be found in homes around the country. The company has a strong connection with Outward Bound and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. A company bursary has allowed about 800 disadvantaged
students to attend five-day courses at the Outward Bound centre near Ullswater. The company endured massive disruption in 2012 and 2015 due to flooding, which flood defence works will hopefully prevent happening again. Management and a loyal skilled workforce are proud to have completed 75 years without a day of lost production. Changes on the high street and the loss of so many quality independents encouraged Vale Bridgecraft to open five support showrooms in Cheshire, Gloucestershire, Yorkshire, and Tyne and Wear for existing stockists. La-Z-Boy now has its own UK manufacturing facility
Recliner brand La-Z-Boy has committed to producing more of its furniture in the UK, recognising there is a growing awareness among consumers of the importance of buying local. Recent issues with international freight, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit, mean people are increasingly trying to avoid buying products imported from abroad. In October 2021 La-Z-Boy bought Furnico Furniture. Furnico had manufactured for the brand since it acquired the La-Z-Boy licence in 2008, before La-Z-Boy re-acquired the licence in 2017. As well as providing La-Z-Boy with its first European production facility, the deal enables it to develop and retain core skillsets for furniture production, which is so integral for the industry. Trevor Hailes, La-Z-Boy international
merchandising director says the company was responding to a growing consumer desire to buy products manufactured in the UK rather than overseas. And with complications from Brexit and the pandemic causing supply-chain issues for retailers and manufacturers, it is also an effective way of guaranteeing supply for British customers and mitigating, as much as possible, the effect of increased shipping costs. Leading on from this, La-Z-Boy signed up to the Made in Britain organisation, established to demonstrate the quality and scope of manufacturing in the UK and provide a way companies can market this to their consumers. ‘It is moves such as this that will demonstrate to consumers the best of
British manufacturing – a commitment to supporting the local economy and to producing high-quality products for consumers more efficiently. It will also give La-Z-Boy the ability to take new designs from initial sketch concept, to display models and then to market in a shorter time frame,’ says Hailes. ‘As a brand, La-Z-Boy is keen to support the growth and development of the already prestigious British furniture industry. While manufacturing ranges in our Lancashire factory, we will be using components from UK suppliers wherever possible. We are pleased to support the local economy and give something back to the community where our staff live and work.’ This has included the company becoming a sponsor of Burnley FC. Building relationships with a growing number of UK retailers, it is continually investing in improving product quality, for flooring experiences that stand out from the competition. The collection features natural matt wood and lifelike stone designs in a choice of modern and classic styles, also boasting a number of designs with a deep wood structure, an ultra-deep embossed texture and supermatt finish for a true recreation of nature. decors bring more freedom of expression than ever. Grand Majestic is the new High Pressure Floor from BerryAlloc, celebrating the majesty of super-wide and extra-long planks it’s a floor for homes that like to think big. Scratch and impact resistant, this is a floor that stays looking good no matter what life throws at it. And with the builtin BerryAlloc SilentSystem, it deadens footsteps for a quieter place to be. DreamClick is BerryAlloc’s answer to the problems commonly associated with conventional LVT. Launched after a two-year R&D process, BerryAlloc’s Ultimtec finish
brings high-quality engineered wood flooring with the simplicity to suit today’s living. It features on the Les Essentiels and Les Exclusifs collections that embrace the consumer’s natural reflex to choose colour before texture. In Les Essentiels, BerryAlloc presents classic colours, offering a solid choice with wide appeal. In Les Exclusifs, the colours feel more premium and trendleading with an enhanced sense of depth. And relax Comfort counts for Tribù
For Belgian outdoor furniture manufacturer Tribù, its 2022 collection is all about comfort, with lower tables to gather around and deep-seated chairs to ease into for al fresco lunches that last until cocktail hour. The new Amanu collection, designed by Yabu Pushelberg, comprises a dining chair, lounge chair and dining table. Woven chair seats that support and gently mould to the body are suspended from slim teak frames. The teak table has a top finished with reclaimed ceramic
tiles that appear suspended over the frame, adding a lightness to the look. The versatile Senja collection has a new armchair and lounge chair. Designed by father and son Wim and Bob Segers of Studio Segers, the lounge chair has an indulgent extended seat depth, wide backrest and soft cushions. Like the armchair, it comes with linen, wenge or teak legs and body-contouring woven back rest. Designer Monica Armani has updated her Tosca collection with a low dining Amanu

Placed around a low dining table, the chair is perfectly framed for comfort while eating, and relaxed enough to curl up in later. up to 20sqm, making it quick to install as no adhesives are required. The addition of the textile backing also means the floor can be installed over damp subfloors where a relative humidity (Rh) of 90% is not exceeded. ‘Our new Architex collection offers an impressive collection of beautiful trend-led designs as well as an outstanding set of performance benefits intended to enhance residential spaces. We also took the opportunity to refresh the look and feel of our UK manufactured luxury vinyl sheet offering and align the collections with an extensive sampling
package, including a new retail display presence,’ says Tom Rollo, Polyflor marketing director. ‘The new collection is beautifully presented within a sampling package which includes a new luxury vinyl sheet brochure and retail display unit combining all three collections: Secura, Designatex and Architex, in addition to Architex specific shade cards and presenters. UNDERLAY
A lasting impression A multitude of choice allows for finely tuned fittings The Floorwise underlay collection is renowned for delivering added value and long-term performance. When it comes to range, there are few UK brands that can manage the same level of choice in underlay. With recycled PU, rubber sponge, rubber crumb, wood and laminate, combination felt, acoustic, underfloor heating and LVT underlays, Floorwise has one of the widest collections available. ‘It is not just about the diversity of the collection. The company has worked hard to develop unique specifications that ensure quality at every price point. Be it a budget recycled PU like Initio or a premium rubber crumb option such as Champion, you can be sure that fantastic floors start with a Floorwise underlay,’ says Richard Bailey, Floorwise md. ‘We’ve made sure that our underlay collection provides options to keep everyone happy, not only in terms of
60
Interiors Monthly March 2022
choice and comfort but also long-term performance. Whether you’re installing a tufted carpet or tackling sound beneath laminate, you know that using Floorwise will keep your customers delighted well into the future.’ For carpet underlays, great performance comes in a balance of comfort and long-term support. The recovery of the underlay plays a key role in getting this balance right – Floorwise calls this ‘bouncebackability’, and density is a controlling factor, which is why it offers several options. A prime example is its recycled PU underlays, with densities from MD+ (Medium Density Plus) right up to UHD+ (Ultra High Density Plus). Along with altering the thickness of the underlay, this approach ensures comfort expectations are met and long-term support delivered in line with budget. It is also keen to promote a systembased approach to carpet underlay,
highlighting the importance of suitable grippers. The Diamond gripper enjoys an enviable reputation among installers as an option for high-quality underlays, holding carpet well over thick 11mm products, as well as giving a better hold over the carpet’s lifetime. For more costconscious jobs, its Premium gripper range delivers a value product that delivers reliable quality and strong hold. ‘The installation is just as important as the carpet in meeting the expectations of the homeowner,’ says Bailey. ‘Underlay that fails to give that all-important comfortable underfoot feel from the off will leave a homeowner disappointed, but one that loses its comfort too quickly will also leave a less than glowing lasting impression. Floorwise underlays and grippers let retailers and installers fine-tune the installation, so that every floor feels fantastic.’ Visit: www.floorwise.co.uk

UNDERLAY
renu has won awards
renu POS
286 rolls of renu were used at the COP26 summit before being recycled
A greener option renu is 98% recycled and 100% recyclable In today’s climate-conscious world, it is more important than ever to offer customers eco-friendly flooring solutions. Manufactured at Interfloor’s site in Haslington, Lancashire, renu is an innovative high-quality underlay that combines Tredaire’s established features of luxury and comfort with the vision to aim for 100% recycling in the manufacture and afterlife of a high-quality underlay. It is a product created from the results of its own in-house consumer research targeted at UK homeowners. Of the participants contacted, 88% said they would choose a carpet underlay that is recycled/recyclable over one that is not. They also ranked end-of-life recycling as the most important factor when choosing a product for the home. From this data, it was clear that a new
62
Interiors Monthly March 2022
and innovative solution was needed. Interfloor has used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of its underlay for many years. But with renu it has gone further, responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It is 98% recycled, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means it keeps waste from going to landfill, and it is 100% recyclable itself. The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings. The foam is then mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high-temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and vegetable-based inks are used for printing. The facing film is made from
an ethically produced, carbon-negative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere, at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Energy-efficient renu has a high tog rating, which means it is a great insulator which will help keep houses warm and save energy. The point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet – and renu, being made from high-density foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home. An award-winning product that remains true to luxury and comfort whilst helping to meet the environmental expectations of a modern world. Visit: www.interfloor.com/renu

WOOD AND LAMINATE
Heatflow allows the warmth from underfloor heating to pass quickly into the room
Shhh…
Heatflow sits between the flooring, moisture membrane, underfloor heating and subfloor
Quality underlay makes all the difference for wood and laminate floors When consumers buy hard floors, they want to know that noise and energy efficiency are top priorities for manufacturers. Interfloor provides that reassurance with its specialist underlays for wood and laminate flooring offering some of the best noise-reducing performance in the industry. The Duralay Timbermate range includes the best-selling sponge rubber Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor Gold. One of the most important benefits of specialist underlays for hard floors is a reduction in impact sound. We all know that walking on a hard floor can be both loud and sharp, and the right quality underlay will make a big difference in reducing the sound. Tests show in-room acoustics can worsen if inferior underlays are used under hard flooring: a lightweight, air-filled, cellular product creates an echo chamber and amplifies sounds. Duralay Timbermate underlays reduce in-room noise by up to 30%. Independent tests prove the products, with their superior weight and density, significantly reduce acoustic noise levels and all have achieved low SONE ratings and impressive soundreduction ratings. Silentfloor Gold achieves a substantial sound reduction of 24dB and Timbermate Excel is close behind with 23dB. Timbermate Excel is a 3.6mm gauge high-density resilient rubber underlay,
64
Interiors Monthly March 2022
while the top-end Silentfloor Gold is a 4.2mm gauge high-density resilient rubber underlay. Cold, hard groundfloor subfloors such as concrete are more prone to moisture damage, so both feature a vapour barrier which helps to repel moisture and protects the flooring. Laminate panels need to be evenly distributed and fixed securely in place so they don’t move or warp. A lot of subfloors are slightly uneven or bumpy, which can affect the quality of the laminate installation. Therefore, installing an underlay evens out small imperfections in the subfloor. Helping ensure the laminate is level and stable prevents overstraining of joints in wood and laminate boards, which then extends the lifespan of the flooring. For underfloor heating, Duralay Heatflow Wood & Laminate is a specialist low-tog and high-density resilient rubber underlay. It also helps to keep noise to a minimum with a rating of 21dB and, in doing so, like all Interfloor underlays, creates the perfect ambience for a much more peaceful place to be. Heatflow has a low tog rating, allowing the warmth generated by underfloor heating to pass quickly into the room. It conducts
more heat than other underlays, which makes it an ideal choice for installations with underfloor heating, bringing greater heating efficiency and the potential for reducing heating bills. In addition, Duralay Technics 5 is a high-specification, twin-scrim underlay that is an excellent choice for engineered wood flooring. Due to its density and Textron backing, Technics 5 provides exceptional dimensional stability, thereby providing a perfect base for the flooring, reducing overstraining on joints and greatly reducing both impact and airborne sound between rooms with a sound reduction rating of 29dB. Rope tricks
Tradition has inspired a first-time collaboration Taking inspiration from the classic Orkney chair (seen opposite) Vincent Van Duysen has created his first design for Kettal: Giro. ‘The initial and core idea and research behind this collection was about the rope, using it in a different way by sewing several together in order to create the shape of the product itself. A big source of inspiration has been the Orkney Chair. As a great example of vernacular product design, this classic has inspired me to draw on the past with an eye to today’s and Kettal’s technology expertise. ‘Whereas in the Orkney the rope was made of real rope, Giro hinges on the flexibility of recycled polypropilente rope and on the necessity to produce such a collection industrially. There is a respect for the tradition and craftsmanship, but translated to an actual modern up-to-date version, taking all the profit of the actual technology

and know-how of Kettal,’ he says. ‘The study of vernacular furniture can teach us a lot, not only about the development of understandings of
furniture, or the development of societies and cultures, or about relationships between furniture and wider realities, but also how the position

of furniture as a cultural good, as a good embedded in a culture and society, can see furniture serve as a component of projected understandings of heritage and identity, and in doing so can endow attributes on an object of furniture it doesn’t naturally, inherently, possess. ‘Based on adding a natural material to a very sustainable material that can face all kinds of weather, the result is a very comfortable, welcoming look
and feel. The start of a range that boasts warmth, elegance and cosiness.’ The collection consists of dining chairs and tables, sofas, and centre and side tables. ‘The combination with teak gives it a very natural, authentic aspect. The materials are the protagonists of the collection, which seems almost not designed, it comes naturally together. Therefore, the attention to details is essential. That’s why we attached a deep attention to the intrinsic qualities of each material: the pattern of the rope (twisted), its thickness, its stitching and sewing details. But also, the joinery details, definition of edge radius, sections of the teak. ‘In Giro, we have some variety of shapes, textures and materials, such as the difference between the seating items and the coffee and side tables. And still all the items merge harmoniously together to create a warm, tactile and pleasant atmosphere. ‘Giro is a collection that can blend into interiors and exteriors due to its tactility and pure lines.’ Visit: www.kettal.com

Individuality Bespoke support allows members to pursue their own marketing identity The Metro buying group has represented independent flooring retailers since 1979 and for more than 20 years it has also recognised the importance of assisting retailers in marketing the products they sell. Following the introduction of Metro’s own label, Carpet 1st, in the mid 1990s, the group has constantly looked for ways to support retailers and the sale of not only own-label products but also any products to help members make a profit. Metro’s marketing service in 2022 is at its most versatile yet with a dedicated marketing team which assists not only with flooring displays but also with any possible project that a retailer may wish to undertake. From a label to a poster, all print work is designed and printed in-house at subsidised rates, covering almost anything a member requires. Metro’s members are spread across the UK and work has been carried out from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland. Metro prides itself on allowing members to retain their independence, and having a bespoke marketing service allows members to pursue their own marketing identity while being supported by the group with more

than 30 years of advertising and marketing experience. Work is carried out remotely and/or on site from a fully equipped marketing vehicle, with display and sign-making printers and access equipment allowing the team to work on site and at height if required. The group has continuously invested in equipment and facilities to make sure that no job is too large or small to handle. One such job was carried out recently in Walsall at Manns Carpets,
where it made more sense to refurbish what would be a very expensive sign to replace. The sign was remanufactured and existing framework used to create effective results at minimum cost. Drive sales with mattress protectors National Bed Month is a great time to focus on the importance of sleep. It’s also a time to reflect and review missed opportunities within the retail environment. Protect-A-Bed is a global specialist in mattress protection and can significantly grow sales within this category. ‘In terms of hygiene, the average person sweats up to a pint of fluid a night. With mattress fillings being highly absorbent, your mattress if unprotected will absorb hundreds of pints of sweat in its first year of use alone. All of our mattress protectors use a Miracle Membrane, which is waterproof yet breathable and allows body heat to easily pass through, whilst preventing any sweat from entering the mattress. The protectors are machine washable,

meaning you can keep your sleep zone healthy and hygienic. Every Protect-A-Bed protector also includes a 10-15-year product guarantee and, when bought with a mattress, a 10-15-year anti-stain guarantee. Protect-A-Bed will have the mattress professionally cleaned to the customer’s satisfaction or buy the customer a new one if it fails and the mattress was bought with the protector. This promise is significantly powerful and is at the core of our philosophy. Supporting this is an award-winning claims resolution and customer service. Ultimately, in store it’s about creating value for the customer,’ says Paul Lake, Protect-A-Bed national sales manager ‘It’s in both the store’s and the customer’s interest to purchase and our
speciality is driving in-store performance, so linked mattress and mattress protector sales are extremely high. The customer benefits from a healthy and hygienic sleep zone while the store benefits from increased sales revenue. Every customer who walks through the door, if buying a mattress, needs to buy a mattress protector. It’s in their interest to do so for many reasons. ‘Nobody else in the category has the same passion and focus to grow sales and that’s why we are the leading global brand in healthy sleep. Materials full of texture, decadent fabrics and statement metallic detailing that enhances its monochrome colour palette, provide
that all-important finishing touch. Within this trend, the Moorgate dining table brings Inspired Luxe glamour to a room. The stylish, contemporary design features a white marble top paired with an eye-catching metal base, with a choice of a matt black or a brushed brass finish. Re-imagining past traditional trends in an innovative way, classic shapes have been lifted with new fabrics and materials to create New Traditional, which gives interiors a classy, smart country-house feel. With a freedom to mix finishes and periods, New Traditional takes formal furniture and gives it a sleeker, more contemporary look, whilst also focusing on comfort. Shape of Colour offers graphicinspired feature pieces with mixed proportions to create a modern art style of living. A relaxed view on colour palettes enables interiors to become bolder yet sophisticated, with curiously smart styling. Bold accents and bright colours combined with a variety of shapes give an updated take on 1970s inspired form and aesthetics, bringing this trend to life. FurnitureKiosk
Touch and order
Access your live business data wherever you are
The latest innovation provides shoppers access to all you can sell in-store ‘Created as a low-cost solution for the furniture industry, RetailSystem is by far the most widely used furniture-centric retail software management system in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The system was created by a furniture retailer so it was designed to deal with all the idiosyncrasies that our industry comes across on a daily basis, and over the past 18 years has developed to be the most comprehensive EPOS tool for our sector,’ says David Hewitt, RetailSystem head of global support and implementation. ‘FurnitureKiosk is our latest concept. There are many products you don’t want to display on your website for a myriad reasons – they don’t travel well, are not allowed to be sold online, are too heavy for carriers… the list is endless. So we came up with FurnitureKiosk, replacing all those suppliers brochures you can’t find when you want them and that are out of date as soon as they arrive. ‘What we have created is all of the products available to you displayed on an interactive screen on your shop floor. The customer can select a complex product for themselves, or sales staff can build the order on screen with them. Staff can also move around the store with the customer, building their wish lists or indeed their order. ‘Your team have all the client statistics at their fingertips, to give every customer the VIP treatment. If you aren’t using

RetailSystem, the order gets emailed to you from the kiosk once completed; if you are using the EPOS, then it drops onto your RetailSystem dashboard. ‘Content for the kiosk is live. If a product is discontinued or a new fabric becomes available it can be updated instantly, as can any price increases. ‘The take-up of FurniturePay has been phenomenal, thanks to securing some amazing savings on card-processing fees. “It’s one of those areas you just don’t get round to looking at,” said one retailer to us, and we secured savings of more than £40,000 against its existing provider. ‘There are two further benefits to FurniturePay and they involve integration of the PEDs. Mis-keyed transactions (for example £24.90 v £249) can’t happen as the system will only let the correct value be processed. Fraudulent refunds are

also eliminated as the only refunds that can be issued are for sales that went through the system in the first instance. ‘The world’s most widely used accounting software, QuickBooks by Intuit was chosen to integrate with RetailSystem. It has been in operation with our US clients since 2021, and while the cost and time savings are superb, the real benefit is it doesn’t make mistakes. From the initial sale through to the yearend, it’s as automated as you want it to be. No matter where you are, you can see exactly what’s in the till at each store, what you owe suppliers, what customer deposits you’ve taken – it’s all there live. ‘We partnered with Shopify last year to produce some outstanding websites and bring clients of our original WebSystem along for the ride. We decided to provide a changeable template, build the content, upload all the high-resolution images and have it ready to go for nothing upfront, and use a monthly subscription to cover the cost in the long term. We have a policy on all of our modules and products that there is no long-term contract: if you aren’t happy you can walk away with a month’s notice. Again, the take-up has been phenomenal and we have over 100 WebSystem Shopify websites live or in the build stages. Visit us at the NEC to find out more.’ Visit: retailsystem.com

The show is organised twice every year in Spring and Autumn editions, by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, the apex organisation representing handicraft manufacturers and exporters in India. and very well attended. It was great to see so many customers – there was a real buzz around the showroom and an enthusiasm for new products,’ says Mark Flint, HTL UK md. ‘Rauch Furniture exhibited at the INDX Furniture show at very short notice, following the postponement of the January Furniture Show at the NEC. It was essential for us to re-connect with our customers and take the
opportunity to have face-to-face meetings and discuss upcoming product developments. In this respect it was a great success, and we’re delighted with our decision to attend. The show itself had a professional, yet friendly and personal feel to it, and buyers were positive and amenable to placing stock orders, discussing new floor displays and refreshing their stores. We couldn’t have delivered the show without the continued support of our suppliers, whose collaboration led to a very meaningful event in what continues to be a very challenging period.
