EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
Will this be the time? For years the supermarket chains have eyed the interiors sector, but never managed to crack it. Will 2014 prove to be the year that one finally does? If you’ve managed to visit one of Tesco’s larger stores in the past 10 days or so, you will have seen the chain’s relaunched home offer, and there is more to come. About a year ago when the chain recruited Julie Reynolds-Smith as Tesco home head of buying and Steven Rowe as Tesco home head of design, the existing offer was effectively binned and work began to create the 2014 collection. As an example of the difference in approach, the chain now has one shade of cream. That may not sound much, but Rowe told me it used to have 10. Now it has an in-house design team and a sense of purpose. After talking to Rowe and Reynolds-Smith the indication is that the

interiors sector is being taken more seriously than ever. In-store merchandising has also changed (there are photographs online) with a much more consumer-friendly layout to the home department. The furniture offer will come in the autumn, as its development was always going to take longer than homewares. But it has been selected and photographed, and furniture will be the backbone of the collection, according to Rowe. With their supply chain skills and knowledge about what we buy, the big supermarkets have long had the ability to succeed in the interiors market, but the products and their promotion were lacking. Tesco also intends to roll out home trends to other sectors which means the home market will be at the heart of what it does. So, this may be the year you add the country’s largest retailer to your list of competitors. Congratulations to all those in the interiors industry who ran for charity in last month’s London Marathon, including Associated Weavers’ Jared Croft, who raised almost £3,000 for the Martin House Children’s Hospice in Wetherby, Leeds.

Deliveries on track
OLIVIERO TOSCANI/FLÖTOTTO.
Seats of learning: Konstantin Grcic’s PRO collection of chairs has won this year’s Design Museum Furniture Design of the Year award, being praised for its ‘state of the art ergonomics and pioneering design’. Originally designed for the educational market, PRO, manufactured by Flototto, allows movement in all directions and actively stimulates it, thereby promoting healthier sitting. PRO and the six other category winners will now compete for the overall Design of the Year 2014 award, to be announced on 30 June.
Bensons for Beds has upgraded its mobile proof of delivery (ePOD) system, eliminating customer claims of non-delivery or nonassembly. It is using 120 Motorola MC65 rugged mobile devices supplied by Peak-Ryze. On successful delivery of a bed – it delivers about 3,500 beds a week – the device captures the customer’s signature and the camera enables drivers to prove the bed was assembled onsite. If the customer is not in, the driver can photograph the front door to prove that
delivery was attempted. Photographs are also taken to record any damage to product or property, or any obstructed access or inadequate room dimensions preventing delivery to the room of choice. Drivers can add comments to a captured image and automatically embed a geostamp via integrated GPS. As well as reducing paperwork, the device acts as a phone. It also schedules the driver and their deliveries, while the tracking feature helps Bensons for Beds monitor driver behaviour.
Ulster to invest £30m in production at Portadown Ulster Carpets is to invest £30m modernising and expanding its production facilities at Portadown, County Armagh. Work will begin in the next few weeks with the demolition of all its old buildings. The first phase of the investment will fund a £6.5m dyehouse and energy centre providing state of the art dyeing equipment and significantly improving the energy efficiency of the site. Future phases will include new weaving and finishing technology to meet the demands of future growth. The investment is part of a long term commitment to create and secure jobs, strengthening the local economy and underpinning its position as a premium player in the Axminster carpet business. ‘Three years ago we made a strategic decision to keep our manufacturing base in Portadown and to continue to invest

heavily in innovative technology along with providing a high level of excellence in service and quality. However, it is the ongoing commitment and endeavour of our people which sets us apart from the competition,’ says Nick Coburn, Ulster md.
Administrator still looking to save Paul Simon Administrators continue to seek a buyer for failed soft furnishings, beds, furniture, and flooring chain Paul Simon. It has closed 17 loss-making stores, leaving 33 stores continuing to trade. In the year to 2 June 2013, the chain had sales of £51.65m – down from £54.95m the previous year. An after-tax profit of £1.089m in 2011/12 fell to
8

£3,985. Based on its most recent accounts, it may have more than £11m of liabilities with almost £8m of stock. ‘Like many other retailers, Paul Simon has been hit hard by the uncertain economic environment. In addition, its core business has been undermined by the increasing importance of online sales causing an erosion of margins,’ says Lee
Manning, Deloitte partner and jointadministrator. ‘This was compounded by the impact of the recent widespread flooding which restricted many customers’ access to several stores.’ The 17 closed branches employed 137 people while 28 staff have been made redundant at the company’s head-office, warehouse and factory.

Sales and margin rise for Dunelm Dunelm Mill has seen almost doubledigit sales growth in the past quarter and rising margins. The furnishings chain enjoyed a sales increase of 9.9% in the quarter to 29 March, with sales reaching £195.4m. Four stores were opened in the quarter, including a relocation and one superstore that replaced two high street branches. Ten stores opened in the nine-month period, with two more planned before the year-end. This will increase the store total to 136. Growth in like for like sales for the quarter was 5.0% (and 1% for the 39 week period) reflecting the absence of snow disruption as well as ongoing investments that have strengthened the customer proposition and driven sales. These include ongoing development in multi-channel, the further roll-out of the Dunelm At Home proposition, enhanced customer service training, continuation of TV advertising and an expanded spring catalogue. Nick Wharton, Dunelm chief executive, says: ‘We have again delivered a period of solid progress.
This reflects, in part, our willingness to invest to underpin the longer-term growth of the business – including increased advertising to build brand awareness, further enhancing our home delivery proposition, and expanding our in-home consultation service.’ He says these investments will continue, increasing the operating cost ratio while benefiting sales. ‘With clear opportunities to develop further our in-store offer, to expand our store portfolio and to benefit from our exciting multichannel and customer service initiatives, the board remains confident in the growth prospects for the business,’ he says. Gross margin for the quarter improved approximately 100 basis points compared with last year. Wharton says a key driver of margin improvement is: ‘direct sourcing activity, which we continue to support with increased infrastructure. In line with previous guidance, we anticipate that year on year margin growth will continue over the remainder of the financial year.’
Axminster ‘regeneration’ Axminster Carpets has been through a year of ‘review, transformation and regeneration’ since it was bought from administration, says its chairman. Last April Stephen Boyd led a consortium of investors to buy the carpet maker after it went into administration. ‘I’m delighted to report that we’re now starting to see the benefits of all the hard work that, without exception, every member of staff has put into turning this business around in the last year. We’ve still got a lot more work to do but with new product innovations, good cost controls, a commitment to staff training and a strong pipeline of orders we’re very optimistic about the future of this iconic British business,’ he says. Boyd expects sales of £12m for the year ended March 2014 and to return to profit in the new financial year. Since the deal staff numbers have increased from 100 to 164.
Companies team up for recycling Arighi Bianchi and Flooring UK are among the latest retailers to join Carpet Recycling UK. Arighi Bianchi teamed up with Anglo Recycling, a member of Carpet Recycling UK, to explore options for material recovery from fitting offcuts. The result was Crumbwool underlay made by Anglo from recycled carpet fibres plus rubber granules from recycled tyres. Crumbwool underlay is promoted in-store to consumers as ‘the best experience you will never see.’ Neville Hinchliffe, Arighi Bianchi flooring department manager, says he is pleased with the new service provided by Anglo. He says it not only saves money on previous disposal methods of offcuts, but ensures that materials are

reused, providing sustainability for the future. Flooring UK is a family run business serving Southport and Merseyside since 1947, and now Cheshire with the new Warrington superstore. ‘We have been pushing to recycle carpet and underlay for 20 years since visiting the USA in 1993 and seeing recycling of carpet fibres in action,’ says Chris Latham, Flooring UK md. Flooring UK teamed up with Edward Clay and now ensures that carpet fibres can be extracted from clean identified offcuts and reused in felts for industry. Around 25 tonnes will be recycled this year reducing the burden on rapidly depleting landfill resources, and helping reduce landfill disposal costs.
Top performers: John Lewis At Home stores were its star performers in the run-up to Easter, with five branches posting sales increases of more than 40%. Ipswich, Swindon, Chester, Croydon and Newbury all cleared the 40% mark, led by Ipswich which achieved growth of 47.8%. Other At Home stores also performed well, with sales at Poole and Tunbridge Wells up a fifth. Home sales rose by 19.8% as total sales increased by 20.5% in the week to 19 April. The chain, which celebrates its 150th anniversary on 2 May, has seen strong furniture and flooring sales in recent weeks, helped by the introduction of interest free credit on flooring.

Mentens makes Natuzzi comeback

After less than a year in the job, Jan Mentens has left his role as director of the Brussels Furniture Fair to run Natuzzi’s western European operations, including the UK. Natuzzi veteran Mentens says he rejoined the upholstery company because of: ‘The new brand strategy, the commercial challenge in the restructured area under a new chief commercial officer, the persistence of Mr Natuzzi to get me on board, and the passion of my southern Italian and west European colleagues have convinced me to rejoin the group to create sales, profit and brand equity for the dealers and the Natuzzi company. ‘With one brand (Natuzzi), three collections – Natuzzi Italia, Natuzzi (Editions) and Natuzzi Re-vive – the strategy allows us to get the best out of our brand recognition in various markets, being competitive on different price levels and with different target groups,’ he says.

HOW TO GENERATE RECORD SALES… 5 ESSENTIAL WAYS TO MAXIMISE YOUR SALES AND PROFIT
Brand consistency will win a niche following With social media allowing the world of interiors to become ever more personalised, retailers have increasingly diversifying markets to target. Pinterest for example is an interior designer’s fantasy landscape with a plethora of beautifully shot and edited images. All ‘pinned’ by like-minded designers and consumers, salivating at an artfully overexposed picture of vintage wallpaper. They might not be able to have it but they will search until they find something similar. It is this sharing of inspiration for interiors that has resulted in diversification. Niches have a loyal following so retailers wanting to target them have to position their brand perfectly – both instore and online. The key to any successful rebrand or update, regardless of whether it is your entire business or a sub-brand, is consistency. Choose the market you want to aim at and stick with it. Targeting a niche is about expertise. Trying to balance between two different concepts will give the impression that you’re an expert in neither. If, for example, you have a large business dealing with more mainstream interiors, but want to introduce more expensive, handcrafted wooden furniture, the same rules apply. A better idea would be to create a secondary brand, with its own specialised staff and, crucially, its own design identity. The first thing to do is to consider what your business’s strengths are. Who are your existing core customers? Where does your knowledge lie? What are your core values? These should be the foundation stones of building your brand and what you revert to if you need guidance. You should then develop your brand’s character and voice to be friendly, welcoming, and full of reassuring expertise. For specific markets, creating the air of an insiders’ club in your literature can be effective. Becoming the regional expert in that market can be profitable, particularly when online ordering means your business isn’t limited by travel. Your website doesn’t need to be vast. Some of the most successful websites have three or four pages, but are effective at drawing people to place orders or visit the physical store. Investing in good photography can make a huge difference to the perceived value of products. Up to date quality photography will almost always be worth the money, as it can be used in a variety of contexts – sales literature, website, any promotional activity and even in-store signage. Most importantly, keep your brand consistent across all platforms. Putting in the effort to develop a strong brand now will allow you to capture the attention of enthusiastic niche customers willing to spend money with the retailers they trust, and build relationships with them. Once your work has gained a loyal following you’re on to a winner.

Going up in the world More consumers are welcoming the benefits of man-made fibres For many years carpets made from polypropylene and other man-made fibres were seen as a poor relation of the flooring family. But in recent years this has changed as technology and economic circumstances have transformed the scruffy cousin into a refined favourite. The ability to easily clean polypropylene has long been at the heart of its appeal – and promotion – and this has been boosted with fibre developments to improve its feel. Balta Broadloom says its Sensit fibre has been designed to strike the ideal balance between feel, stain performance and durability. Sensit uses 200% more filaments than standard ‘easy care’ carpets to provide a soft texture that gives an indulgent and luxurious feel while losing none of the stain performance, it claims.

‘Matched by an equally alluring silken sheen, Sensit gives carpets an opulence that acts as a real alternative to wool and wool-rich styles. Rather than dismissing the silk-like quality of these fibres, a shift in consumer taste is now embracing the dimension that this look can add to interiors,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta marketing director. ‘In a durable two-ply twist, Sensit carpets also stand up to wear, resisting the usual signs that afflict single-ply polypropylene and come backed with reassuring stain and wear warranties,’ he adds. Martin West, Kingsmead md, says its Clean Easy Everlon Super Soft range offers many benefits. In the Dignity and Stoddard Medici Wilton ranges, the 100% Everlon stain resistant fibres are mothproof, nonallergenic and bleach cleanable.
Kingsmead’s Clean Easy ranges have a lifetime warranty
‘It is strong, lustrous and soft, making it the perfect choice for modern day living. The 4m wide Everlon Super Soft ranges also come with a lifetime Stainresist warranty against food and drink stains providing you with peace of mind to ensure that your flooring lasts the test of time,’ he says. Mohawk’s SmartStrand fibre, now exclusively distributed in the UK by Lano Carpets, has proved to be at the heart of a revolution for stain resistant fibres that offer an alternative to wool and wool-rich qualities, rather than a cheaper and quick to wear substitute, according to Lano. For the past few years, SmartStrand has championed a new fibre made from a bio-based ingredient derived from corn. Some 37% of the fibre is made from this rapidly renewable resource, dramatically reducing its reliance on petro-based chemicals and

energy consumption. Featuring lifetime stain resistance, SmartStrand carpets have been proven to be as durable as polyamide and are incredibly soft, ticking many of the boxes of today’s homeowner. The worry-free nature of the carpet is a big-draw, says the company. In a range of UK centric colours, SmartStrand avoids an overtly glossy look, with a delicate sheen that has wider appeal and doesn’t look out of place in archetypal British interiors. Sensualité is Associated Weavers’ latest collection of super-soft carpet using the exclusive iSense yarn.
A typical feature of the collection is its extremely soft polyamide yarn that allows the carpet to be strong, resilient and soft at the same time, says Steve Elliott, Associated Weavers UK md. ‘Fibre used in carpets is becoming softer and softer to meet consumer demands and iSense will recover faster and quicker from traffic wear than any other carpet,’ he says. Among the six ranges, ‘Seduction has everything to seduce, with irresistible softness in combination with a strong resilience. Splendour is a light friese yarn, and Serenity is pure luxury for all the senses allowing consumers to surround themselves in high performance luxury,’ says Elliott. ‘We all like to make a great first impression and we think we’ve done that with the new Soft Touch First Impressions’, says Shaun Lewis, Victoria Carpets sales director. ‘Although no stranger to alternative fibres, taking our expertise as a wool house has paid dividends in developing Soft Touch. The density of the tufted construction provides all the characteristic appeal and luxurious feel of a wool carpet. This highly robust and resilient carpet is available in 12 shades, in both plain and stippled effects.’ Benefits include two-ply yarn for improved appearance retention and softer underfoot with superior handling thanks to Victoria’s exclusive LOC-weave backing system. Moving up Cormar Carpets’ Sensation is taking polypropylene to the next level
Sensation Twist
Part of its family of easy-clean carpets, Cormar Carpets’ Sensation is made from 100% Luxelle fibre – a heavyweight polypropylene engineered to feel softer and more luxurious but with all the practical living qualities of a standard polypropylene. In light of its popularity, during the past year Cormar has developed a lighter weight version called New Feeling, as well as a Sensation Heathers and Sensation Twist option. ‘The retail carpet market has been dominated for years by wool twists. But polypropylene has come a long way and now the quality has improved so much that many consumers are willing to opt for polypropylene. Plus, the Sensation range with its use of soft luxurious Luxelle fibre reflects the current trend for lustre and handle and brings a new dimension to the market,’ says David Cormack, Cormar marketing director. Sitting as the flagship heavyweight range, Sensation Original was created as an ultra-luxurious and practical option suitable for use throughout the home including high traffic living areas. New Feeling is made with the same pile but in a lighter weight to provide retailers with a lower retail price, increasing its appeal to households on a restricted budget. Sensation Heathers is made on 1/8th gauge using a two-fold specialised fine yarn to create a lustrous handle while Sensation Twist has a finer twist definition. ‘Value for money and practicality has become a top priority for many consumers choosing a new carpet as they increasingly look for hard-wearing, lower priced and low maintenance flooring. What the Sensation ranges offer is all of that plus a really unique tactile feel,’ adds Cormack. Cormar, tel: 01204 881 234

Telling tales – Sealy’s Hybrid success story
Sealy’s groundbreaking Hybrid models feature Adaptive technology. Adaptive is a ‘dynamic response’ textile that reacts to temperature and moisture. Hydro-functional polymers change shape, boosting evaporation and helping to maintain a constant temperature.

BEDS AND BEDROOM
Wake up to the benefits Sealy says a comfortable bed is a factor in getting a good night’s sleep Are you a deeper sleeper? As we get older our sleep patterns tend to change. Specialists refer to this as sleep architecture but it basically describes the set of phases we should naturally go through while we slumber. Although the sleep cycle is repeated several times a night, older people tend to spend more time in the lighter stages of sleep than in deep, rejuvenating sleep. In addition to this, the body’s circadian rhythm (the internal clock that tells you when to sleep and when to wake) can go haywire so you may feel like you haven’t had as much sleep because you drop off earlier in the evening and, by default, wake earlier in the morning. When we first drop off we enter nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which is composed of stages of increasingly deep sleep. Stage one sleep is the lightest, while stages two and three are the deepest and most restorative. At this time tissue growth and repair occurs and energy levels are restored. REM sleep then kicks in about 90 minutes after we first drop off, and recurs about every 90 minutes throughout the night. During this phase of sleep the body becomes immobile as it busily re-energises for the day ahead. If your sleep is repeatedly interrupted, you can’t always progress normally through the deeper, more restorative phases, which is why you don’t wake up feeling refreshed. Research from Sealy and the British Chiropractic Association has revealed that neck or back pain is also preventing nearly half of people from sleeping and that despite all the endless information that is written about it, people are still not making the link between their aches and pains and their beds. But it’s not just the way they sleep that is at fault. ‘Most people don’t think that getting in and out of bed is important to their back health as well. In fact, disc injuries are more likely to occur with bending movements first thing in the morning. As you sleep, the discs in your back hydrate and increase in size and this makes the

disc fibres more susceptible to injury,’ says the BCA. Dr Chris Idzikowski, Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service director, found that swapping an uncomfortable old bed for a comfortable new one could account for an average of 42 minutes of extra sleep – that’s four times the extra sleep achieved by over the counter sleep aids. Sealy and the BCA are collaborating
again in 2014 to raise awareness of the importance of having the right bed to sleep on. An important part of a good night’s sleep is a supportive mattress, particularly one that works right up to the edge, says Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director. All Sealy’s mattresses come with Edge Guard, guaranteeing edge to edge support.

of a deep sleep
A new bed can add another 42 minutes of sleep
‘People should change their mattress every seven years and, if you’re in pain at night, it might be that you need to buy a new one, trying something different perhaps,’ he says. ‘If you are buying a new mattress, it’s vital to try it before making the purchase – after all, you wouldn’t buy a new pair of shoes without trying them on and mattresses are no different, especially as we all spend such a large
amount of our lives in bed. At Sealy we’re conscious that one size doesn’t fit all, so we stock a wide range of mattresses to make sure that people have as many options as possible,’ he adds. Sealy’s Hybrid range is a fusion of a new, highly elasticised gel and breathable memory foam, Geltex, merged with the latest, specially designed springs, either open coil or

layers of pocket and mini pocket springs. The beds also contain Adaptive fibres in the flexible, stretchy soft ticking. Adaptive is a treatment that changes passive textiles to textiles that respond dynamically to temperature changes. On an Adaptive treated mattress, the heat of the body literally works the magic. The Adaptive polymer changes shape and boosts humidity evaporation and improves cooling. ‘These new beds are much in demand and are the big new secret for everyone to whom a proper, recuperative night’s sleep is key, such as the newly promoted Burnley football squad who have been trialling the beds for several months. They’ve had a cracking season and are now all set to take their place in the Premier League,’ says Robinson. ‘The temperature, support and comfort of your bed is so important. These brand new beds from Sealy have been great and the guys in the team love them, and so do I if I know they are getting a really good night’s sleep. Burnley FC has now joined the ranks of Sealy Deeper Sleepers,’ says Mark Howard, Burnley FC head of sports science. Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Strength to strength Burgess Beds continues to grow
Burgess’s beds, including Highgrove (below) are all hand side-stitched
Since winning the National Bed Federation Bed Manufacturer of the Year Award in 2013, Burgess Beds has gone from strength to strength, attracting new customers every week. ‘Turnover year on year continues at a steady 30% growth and we should double turnover within a three-year framework,’ says Andrew Jackson, Burgess md. ‘On top of this are now three major export opportunities reaching a conclusion and this has to be seen as additional growth on top of our UK activity. Being holders of the Manufacturers Guildmark and offering a full unequivocal 10-year guarantee on all our products had given us a fabulous springboard for growth.’ The company’s continued push towards innovative and ecologically designed products is foremost in its business plan. With the Organic range scheduled for release in September 2014
complementing a mattress already licensed by the Soil Association, Jackson says the company will be focusing on other green issues including the FSC certification that it already holds. As the company grows and its name becomes more well known, the increased demand for point of sale items is being met enthusiastically by the Burgess team headed by sales director Jodi Schofield. ‘The overriding aim is to be the best in class, achieving services and products above customer expectations, and for Burgess to be known as a Great Small Company,’ she adds. Flexible friend Versatility is important says Wiemann Versatility is a key feature for homeowners when it comes to choosing a bedroom range, says Peter Hewitt, md of Litmus Furniture, sole UK agent for German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann. Wiemann’s Loft range is a bestseller thanks to its flexibility. The collection offers single 50cm units up to 4m eight door arrangements, with bi-fold doors. The cupboards can be full length or have three base drawers with the combinations. ‘Bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes and therefore it’s key to offer consumers a choice of finishes and fittings. It’s good to see that retailers are wanting better quality products now, rather than just focusing on the promotional ranges we offer,’ says Hewitt. Loft is from Wiemann’s VIP range and comes in various finishes – a choice of five carcases, including Alpine white, black, American walnut, rustic oak and dark rustic oak – while door and drawer fronts come in these finishes plus black, white or magnolia glass as well as mirrors. A few years ago when we offered warranties for products it put customers off as they then thought the product wasn’t as good as the salesman had been telling them if it needed protection. And those who did buy it often came back to us and complained they’d been told they weren’t covered and thought it was a scam on our part. Have things changed?
The vast majority of protection plans sold are providing cover for accidental staining and accidental damage resulting in rips, punctures, scuffs, burns, chips or scratches. This is quite separate to issues of quality covered by the manufacturer warranty;
A
therefore when presented clearly to consumers it would not suggest any inferior furniture product is being offered. Accidents can happen at any time and are totally unrelated to the quality of the furniture. Basically consumers are buying themselves the peace of mind that if they spill a glass of red wine or scratch their furniture with their watch strap or jeans studs, the most appropriately
skilled technician will be selected and sent out to repair their furniture. On those policies that do offer structural cover, this is clearly distinguished from the accident cover and only starts once the manufacturer’s warranty has expired. It is of course very important that retail staff explain both the coverage and exclusions to consumers during the sale, that way they can make an informed decision on whether the plan provides them with the coverage they require. Tarkett has launched the wood and tile Rhinofloor Super Deluxe vinyl range. With more than 10 different designerfriendly styles including an extra-wide plank look, it takes cushioned vinyl flooring into previously unexplored territory. ‘Rhinofloor Super Deluxe is a highly attractive prospect for demanding design schemes due to the combination of on-trend wood and tile designs. Natural materials have long been a popular choice for stylish interiors and for good reason – but now there is an even better cause to choose an on-trend alternative,’ says Steve Urwin, Tarkett UK marketing manager. ‘With realistic-looking wide planks it offers discerning home-makers, specifiers and architects a high quality product in a style that is in high demand.’ Available on a roll up to 4m wide, the floor is textured so you can feel the grain. Acoustically, Rhinofloor Super Deluxe sits at the top end of the collection with a heavy duty gauge of 3.7mm and also has the advantage over wood or

Beyond the woods Leoline is responding to a demand for alternatives to wood plank styles Oak-look planks and stone tiles probably come to mind when considering vinyl flooring. But Victoria Hemelaer, Leoline product manager, wants to change that by offering mosaics, 1960’s themes and Moroccan and Parisian styles. ‘At Domotex we previewed designs that move away from wood plank styles that have dominated cushion flooring over the past few years. We’re finding that there is demand for big and beautiful tile designs with a distinct ethnic influence. Gone are limestone influences and instead we see patterns that add a fabulous dimension to the floor turning it into a key focal point of the interior,’ she says. The Moroccan inspired Shalimar typifies this trend, owing much to the tradition and heritage still found in medina throughout the country with red and blue decorative elements. Feliz gives a more eclectic almost reclaimed feel, using a similar palette but with a hotchpotch of geometric, plain and fleur tiles within the same design. Mosaics too are making an appearance, but in a more intelligent way than the more uniform colours of old. ‘With Lolita we are capturing Parisian cool in that effortless ability to be at once stylish and completely relaxed. Echoing the interiors of the city’s beautiful apartments that manage to achieve a faded magnificence that is incredibly desirable, something of a movie-like quality, the design is a perfect accompaniment to upcycled and distressed furniture,’ she says. Sagres brings the retro trend with a strong monochrome geometric that fits well with modern living spaces. The 1960’s feel of the floor gives spaces a retro feel without being overly fussy.

But Leoline has not abandoned wood. ‘We’ve seen some really interesting movements that steer us away from the predictable oak plank and we are really excited with the new Arbon design,’ says Hemelaer. The endless plank effect gives an unusual feel to wood effect cushion flooring, with no horizontal breaks the plank seems to go on infinitely; a look only possible with the sheet nature of cushion flooring, she says. ‘It raises the bar and sets a new tone that really showcases the possibilities of designing with cushion flooring. We’ve made this look available in the wild pine of Arbon and the more Scandinavian pine of Cardassian. Pine is most definitely back; these new designs take it to a new audience and certainly make a refreshing change from oak,’ she adds. Leoline, tel: 0800 032 3970

Provenance, integrity and transparency are becoming ever more important in daily life with consumers increasingly attune to the origins of products. Wools of New Zealand goes further, ensuring the full lifecycle of the fibre is considered. Laneve wool from Wools of New Zealand is perfectly placed to capitalise on consumer sentiment for ethical products. WNZ wants to deliver integrity beyond the farm gate and ensure that sustainability is built into the products that carry the Laneve brand. This is why Laneve is the fibre of choice for companies such as Crucial Trading, Ulster, Brockway, Flock and Ryalux, which are committed to ethical and responsible practices. Laneve fibre can now be found in 30 design-led, stylish products and this is set to increase. Wool is completely natural and biodegradable but not when mixed with man-made fibres, which is why all Laneve textiles are 100% wool. Rather than rest there WNZ are pushing the industry to embrace a cradle-to-cradle approach and to find a second life for valuable wool fibre once it has finished being a carpet. We are working to ‘up-cycle’ fibres and complete the environmentally
friendly cycle. For example, we have worked with Lancashire based company Anglo Recycling to develop Crumbwool underlay. Crumbwool is created in the UK from post-industrial carpet material. The Crumbwool process takes new carpet – the offcuts from British carpet manufacturers that otherwise go to landfill – and this is recycled into fibre, recycled tyres are added and Crumbwool underlay is born. For every metre sold WNZ donates 5p to the Woodland Trust. For more information visit www.crumbwool.com Wools of New Zealand are a member of Carpet Recycling UK which does an amazing job, having already diverted 27% of UK carpet waste from landfill in 2013. WNZ are now challenging its partners and engaging with them to create up-cycled products from left over materials. Laneve is not just about being natural; a sustainable brand is determined by how you act.

Meet the BioWool case Royal College of Art student Daniel McGlaughlin took some of our recycled wool and created the BioWool suitcase. By combining rescued wool fibre with bio-resin from rapeseed, Daniel has crafted a strong, durable and eventually biodegradable suitcase from readily available and rapidly renewable wool. Now Wools of New Zealand are exploring all manner of options to recycle wool carpets and textiles into new functional objects.

WOOD AND LAMINATE
Kährs’ Nouveau Greige
Wide world Width matters in the flooring market Wide planks (with or without joints) are increasingly dominating the wood and laminate flooring market and Parador, Quick-Step and Kährs have introduced more matt designs to their collections. Parador has expanded its classic collection. Walnut Natural combines rustic with elegance in dark brown, while Oak Tradition grey-beige offers modern living spaces a lively foundation in a light, grey-brown shade. Oak Monterrey’s delicate, white limed effect brings out the grain and small knots, creating an elegant background effect. Oak Graphite-white features discreetly emphasised whitened wood character. Quick-Step’s Variano engineered range is made up of multiple planks that all have a different length, width, and finish. Additionally, the planks are not all entirely straight, so cracks and splits occur, as with old plank floors. The Variano Champagne Brut Oak oiled finish gives a warm and natural feel and an extra matt look, just like untreated rough oak floors. The neutral colour is timeless and, together with the design and the structure, creates a vintage effect. Kährs has added four wood floors to its Classic Nouveau Collection, increasing the number to 10. The latest surfaces share a one-strip plank format and join the collection’s mid to dark toned colour options. Each feature individual surface treatments, which reinforce a natural look. Medium-toned options include Oak Nouveau Haze with a grey hue, and warm tan coloured Nouveau Greige, while Nouveau Dun and Nouveau Tar provide darker choices. Each design features a matt lacquer prefinish and handcrafted treatments include bevelled edges, brushing, colour staining and smoking. The planks measure 2,100mm or 2,420mm x 187mm x 15mm. LIVING AND DINING Heritage has retrostyle handles
The Rubix collection is available in black and white gloss
Made for the home market WBH prides itself on making furniture suitable for British homes Furniture is a major investment for today’s cash-strapped consumer, and choosing living and dining room furniture to fit their home is probably more daunting than ever, reckons David Evans, WBH brand manager. ‘Whether entertaining friends or relaxing with family, the living and dining rooms are increasingly becoming the heart of a house. And whether buying for individual rooms or open plan living, the consumer is now faced with such a diverse choice of sizes, styles and finishes that I’m not surprised they sometimes struggle,’ he says. But consumers are ‘getting wise’ to imported styling, says Evans. What they want is furniture designed for the UK market, at a scale and style appropriate
to their homes, made with ‘good oldfashioned British attention to detail’. WBH’s Caxton brand has a well balanced portfolio of living and dining room collections that offer attractive, practical and affordable options. From the high gloss Rubix and Manhattan collections to the more traditional Lichfield teak and York mahogany finishes, alongside the bestselling Sherwood and popular Huxley oak finish collections – all are designed to appeal to a variety of niches within the UK market. ‘Our latest addition is a good case in point,’ says Evans. The new Heritage living and dining collection combines contemporary design and a warm mid-oak finish with retro-style moulded metal handles that Left: York has a mahogany finish Below: Bestseller Sherwood

strike a note of classic and familiar school-room style. All pieces in the range are elegant, yet its robust cabinetry style is reassurance that they can stand up to the demands of modern living. There is a wide choice of display, storage and entertainment cabinets, plus dining and occasional tables. ‘As well as having a great product, we’re very conscious that the other major benefit of buying British is that supply and aftersales service is more reliable and more efficient. Like many other British companies, we’ve built a reputation for not only providing the best furniture but also the best service to our customers. And we’re working hard to keep it that way,’ he adds. Cheers The styling of a bestselling sideboard has inspired a new collection for Jual Furnishings
JF600 is available in oak (left) and walnut (below); The lamp table (above) conceals a minibar
Jual Furnishings has created a living room range based on its bestselling JF601 sideboard. The JF600 collection uses the sideboard’s key features of curved wood and polished steel to creating a complete range to help consumers transform their living room into a home cinema. ‘Why not dim the lights, sit back and

enjoy your favourite film or sporting event in the warm glow of the back lit wall panel creating that cinema environment whilst enjoying a cool drink fresh from your lamp table by the sofa. We have taken the boring function of the lamp table and converted it into a LED lit minibar with ice bucket, glass rack and bottle holder. This multi-functional item
will really impress family and friends,’ says Julie Powell, Jual director. Key features of the range, available in oak and walnut, are: TV wall panel: a veneered panel that can be placed onto the wall at the desired height and includes a veneered panel to cater for AV cables; TV media cabinet: a miniature sideboard, converted into a functional media unit which has a LED lit glass centre shelf, two enclosed side compartments and three drawers with soft closing mechanisms; Lamp table/drinks cabinet: open the lamp table’s door to discover the LED lit drinks compartment with ice bucket, glass and bottle holders and sit back and enjoy your film as your next drink is chilling; Coffee table: striking but practical with three soft closing drawers and a polished steel foot plate; Nest of tables: available with either glass or veneered tops; Display cabinet: from where the range started with the JF601 sideboard, Jual now has a display cabinet to sit on top which features two glass door side compartments and a centre glass shelf display with all three compartments having a LED down light. Stock is due in Jual’s warehouse in mid-June and it will be offering a twoman room of choice delivery service. Jual, tel: 01443 816 982

Seeing the light Ideal Products has a new home and new ranges As well as exhibiting at May Design Series, Ideal Products is holding an At Home show next month to celebrate the opening of its new warehouse and showroom. After nearly two decades in Wolverhampton, Ideal had outgrown its Bilston Road site and began looking for alternative premises in early 2013. Key criteria for the new site included increased warehouse space, a suitable showroom area and improved office facilities for its increasing workforce. The former Ever Ready torch factory on Lower Walsall Street, Wolverhampton offered potential but needed a lot of work. A deal was agreed and £250,000
invested in refitting the offices and 80,000sqft warehouse alongside the creation of a 5,000sqft showroom to display its increasing UK stocked ranges. Ideal’s origin is as a clearance house, disposing of manufacturers and retailers overstocks, something that still forms a big part of the business today. In 2009 its offer was complemented with a small number of regular UK stocked bedroom ranges. The philosophy was to offer a small range with exceptional order fulfilment and customer service. This proved a success and retailers were soon asking Ideal to stock more products across a number of categories. Ideal’s UK stock offer now consists of
bedroom, living, occasional and children’s furniture, tub chairs and statement-piece upholstery, with more than 250 products available from stock. This commitment to UK stock has turned Ideal into a leading supplier to many major online retailers along with traditional bricks and mortar retailers wanting an extended range offer without the risk of buying and holding stock. The larger warehouse will allow Ideal to add more products to its portfolio during 2014, further enhancing its offer. To launch the showroom and a number of these new products, Ideal is holding an At-Home show from 2-5 June. Ideal Products, tel: 01902 243 240

REVIEW Edra’s Gina
Innovation reigns Milan certainly had plenty to offer this year. Here are some of the highlights
Alivair’s Diesys
After a couple of years of raiding the archives, marking anniversaries or simply adding colours, genuinely new products were aplenty at the Rho show complex. Upholstery showed curves, wings and the continuing force of mid-century trends, styling that Moroso, Arketipo, Poltrona Frau, Calia Italia and Minotti in particular exemplified. In cabinet, minimalism was back with a bang, as typified by Alivair, Casamania, Matteograssi and Gallotti & Radice. As ever, idiosyncratic designs were lurking, typified by Flou’s Gentleman cigar humidor and Molteni&C’s Segreto wall-mounted desk/storage unit. Writing desks tried to bring style to the home office, such as ClassiCon’s Pegasus with moveable leather side covers to conceal

laptops, phones and writing materials while charging your tablet. The halls were awash with stools and individual dining chairs. Cassina’s M10 stood out for looking as if it would tip over when sat in (obviously it doesn’t). Fifteen years after it created the market for clear polycoarbonate furniture with the 3.5kg Marie chair, Kartell’s Uncle Jack weighed in at 30kg and 1.9m as the world’s largest single mould transparent polycarbonate item. REVIEW Ben Cheng with his Radian chair
Winner
Trygve Faste with his Link Shelf
Clement Zheng with his Torus lamp
Francesca Lanzavecchia with Bilik
Capturing the imagination There was a broad spectrum in this year’s Furniture Design Award, from paper lamps, inspiration from fish and pet furniture The International Furniture Fair Singapore again attracted the cream of designers – both professional and student for its Furniture Design Award. Clement Zheng won the Designers’ category with his Torus lamp. ‘Torus is a series of digitally fabricated pendant lights assembled from paper modules,’ he says. ‘Designers are able to efficiently fabricate each lamp to suit the various contexts and space as its form and size are customisable via a computer algorithm. The efficient use of common sheet material, as well as the light industry fabrication methods, allows the lamps to be produced in accordance to demand.’ Bilik by Francesca Lanzavecchia received the Honourable Mention award. ‘Using the craft of weaving to grow, evolve and embed, Bilik is a room divider that showcases how this skill can be used to build tools and construct containers, developing an object from a twodimensional structure to the third,’ she explains. ‘The result is a complex, yet beautiful
92
Interiors Monthly May 2014
object that highlights the value of weaving with rattan, a craft typical to South East Asia. Bilik provides two panels with pockets of various sizes to store and display daily possessions, ranging from iPads, keys, mobile phones, sunglasses and wallets to cardigans, periodicals, throws, your favourite books and everything in between.’ Other finalists included Ben Cheng, Trygve Faste and Neville Mars. Mars created WaterBench, outdoor furniture inspired by Chesterfield sofas, to collect rainwater during Mumbai’s rainy season that can be used to irrigate during the dry season. Cheng’s Radian chair appears structurally strong and flexible. ‘Its stainless steel frames create a visually rigid appearance; however the careful placement of the freestanding bar allows the chair to bend flexibly to accommodate the user’s weight. The perpendicular bar creates more support, while its diagonal bars provide more flexibility and bounce, which increases correspondingly with the angle; thus
making the chair more comfortable to sit on than it appears,’ he says. Faste’s Link Shelf modular shelving unit locks together as it is stacked. ‘It can be built up to any desired height and made into one shelf or many, adapting itself to any storage need or space. The lowest shelf layer can also be converted into a bench with the addition of a felt seat,’ he explains. ‘The inspiration came from simple interlocking systems such as knitting and crocheting. This concept only requires a few manufactured parts as each link is ridged, allowing for easy assembly without tools. The design is structurally strong enough to hold significant weight even though it packs flat. The environmental impact of this shelving system is lesser as compared to the existing shelves on the market as a minimal amount of materials are required to construct it – powder-coated bent steel rod which is recyclable, rectangular plywood sheets that minimises waste during the manufacturing process, and natural wool felt.’

In the Student category, Jexter Lim won with Nishikigo while Angel Chow Ka Yi took the Honourable Mention and Best Design Narrative awards. Lim’s Nishikigo is inspired by Koi fish. ‘There is belief in most Asian countries that it symbolises ambition, courage, fortune, longevity, perseverance, prosperity and success. The texture derived from the scales of this living creature has intrigued me to combine it with essential furniture we use daily – that is, a chair,’ he says. ‘These individual stools are space-savvy and can also be displayed as an ornament or statement piece when

stacked together in threes. The chair focuses on how each stool can be stacked to mimic the scales of the fish, creating a meaningful design piece that subtly promotes the Asian element.’ Ka Yi’s PoochFam is a collection of furniture designed to be pet friendly. ‘Dogs have increasingly been integrated as a member of the family as a consequence of the emerging changes in lifestyle and demographic structure; creating a need to develop new types of furniture to accommodate these changes. ‘The PoochFam set, comprising of the
coffee table, lamp and mobile stool, is designed to enhance interaction between owner and pet; improving the quality of life through shared usage of the furniture,’ she says. Other finalists included Koh Min Xiang’s Pamakid lamp that can be manipulated from an axis point to focus on different objects; Agnieszka Klimowicz’s Stool which combines a birch plywood seat and lacquered sheet steel and is inspired by origami; Klaudia Kuhn’s Bawa children’s table and Xaveria Mo Xiaofei’s Does it Fit? outdoor furniture.
