EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
A solid argument The ASA has driven a coach and horses through Oak Furniture Land’s entire marketing strategy with its ruling on ‘solid’ wood Since it was founded in 2003 the cornerstone of Oak Furniture Land’s marketing message has been that the furniture it sells is solid hardwood with no chipboard, MDF, plywood or veneer in sight. Now the Advertising Standards Authority has thrown an almighty spanner in the works. It has ruled that because the table legs have between three and 10 pieces of wood that run the length of the leg glued together and finished with an oak wrap, it is not solid. Jason Bannister, Oak Furniture Land md, argues that most table tops, worktops, flooring and doors that are referred to as solid are made up of glued planks. The chain says a survey of 2,000 consumers found that 75% of them wouldn’t expect a ‘solid’ leg to
be made of a singe piece of wood, and if it was it would be pretty unusual. At that level of the market, does the ASA really expect pieces to be carved from a single piece of wood? The ASA ruling obviously affects other companies that will not be able to describe a multi-part leg as solid. Oak Furniture Land has removed the word solid from its website and I’m sure there are many other retailers doing the same. The past month has seen more major acquisitions as consolidation continues. Sanderson parent Walker Greenbank is buying fellow fabric and wallpaper group Clarke & Clarke for up to £42.5m (see page 6). The deal is the culmination of 17 years of effort by Lee and Emma Clarke, and will ‘open up a lot more opportunities for growth’, by being part of a larger group, according to Lee Clarke. There is little surprise that the flooring deal involves Victoria, this time paying a minimum of £13m and a maximum of £19.5m for underlay manufacturer Ezi Floor (see p14). The purchase of Interfloor last year has convinced the group that underlay is a product it needs to be involved in and is looking at further acquisitions in the sector.

Branded ranges help boost DFS Sales of branded upholstery ranges have risen by 35% in the past year at DFS, helping the chain to record profits. However, it has warned exchange rates will hit profits. ‘Our ranges of exclusive brands have performed well ahead of expectations, with a 35% increase in total sales orders over the year as a whole. Highlights included the introduction of a number of new models under the House Beautiful brand, and the continued outstanding success of the French Connection Zinc range,’ says Ian Filby, DFS ceo. He says close supplier relationships and vertical integration insights have enabled it to introduce a seven-day express delivery option across the Zinc sofa range. It has also extended its partnership agreements with French Connection, House Beautiful and Country Living during the year. Sales rose by 7.4% to £980.4m, with underlying EBITDA up 5.8% to £94.4m in the year to 30 July. The roll-out of Dwell stores within DFS branches, which uses space previously used as warehousing, has delivered higher sales and profits as well as boosting core DFS sales at those branches. It plans to increase the number of Dwell outlets from 12 to about 40.
‘Gross profit has continued to increase at a faster rate than revenue, up 9.9% to £134.3. This reflects a small improvement in gross margin on goods sold, consistent with our previous guidance that planned investments in price points is now complete,’ says Nicola Bancroft, DFS cfo. Currently prevailing US dollar and euro foreign exchange rates, particularly the US dollar which is the currency DFS purchases around $120m annually of finished goods, presents some challenges in sustaining progress. ‘Active management of our sourcing, cost base and range mix will, we believe, already offset approximately two thirds of the gross impact in the financial year, with a £4m adverse net impact remaining to be addressed. We continue to work to seek to offset the remainder of the impact within the financial year,’ she says. ‘Looking further ahead, the actions we are taking, together with the scale of our operations, geographical mix of our sourcing and our significant UK own-manufacturing capability, provide us with significant advantages compared to many other retailers in our sector,’ adds Bancroft.
Going up: ScS saw sales rise by 14.7% to £317.3m in the year to 30 July. EBITA rose from £11.3m to £16m. Sales densities were up by 12.9% to £219 per sqm, helped by a 20% increase in marketing spend to £23.1m and higher average flooring sales as it ended the 2015 promotion designed to develop market share. Flooring sales climbed by 19.9% (£6.3m). Sales at its 28 House of Fraser concessions rose by 19.7% to £25.3m. David Knight, ScS ceo, says he is encouraged by trading performance since the start of the current financial year which was in line with expectations.

Clarke & Clarke acquired by Walker Greenbank Seventeen years after founding their eponymous fabric and wallpaper company, Lee and Emma Clarke have sold Clarke & Clarke to Sanderson parent Walker Greenbank for up to £42.5m. Walker Greenbank is paying £25m up front, with a maximum of £17.5m payable over the next four years, depending on company performance. It is issuing £17m of shares, borrowing £5m and using £3m of its cash to pay for the deal. Sales at Clarke & Clarke climbed from £18.1m to £22.4m in 2014/2015, with EBITA of £3.8m in 2015. The company’s products are sold under two brands: Clarke & Clarke and Studio G. The Clarke & Clarke brand operates in the mid to value end of its market while Studio G, which launched in January 2015, operates at below £20 per metre. The UK accounts for 54% of sales, the USA 18%, Europe 12% and the rest of the world 18%. Lee Clarke will stay with the company, which will be run as an independent business, once the deal is completed.
Bed code The National Bed Federation has launched an updated version of its Code of Practice. It now includes legal requirements for imported and bought-in products, and a new approach to surveillance and sanctions for any non-compliances. In addition to the current areas of flammability, cleanliness of fillings and trade descriptions, the audit will now also cover compliance with textile composition and labelling requirements, awareness of EU timber legislation, REACH regulations, and EU Biocides legislation. ‘Since its launch, the Code of Practice has proved a monumental success in reassuring trade customers and the consumer that NBF members’ products are safe, clean and honest,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director.

Enjoy the magic of our flying carpets
We can’t promise you the dizzy heights achieved by King Solomon’s carpet, allegedly made of ‘green silk with a golden weft, sixty miles long and sixty miles wide’. But at Associated Weavers we are weaving more of our own legendary magic by introducing a superior delivery system to maximise the appeal of our entire carpet collection.
Meet Hyperion and Hercules twist
There’s no classical mythology here. This is our exciting Invictus range. It’s been developed using the very latest yarn technology, combining appealing softness with deepdown durability, for every room. Carrying a full 20-year stain and wear warranty, the unique iVinci SDO StainAway construction will repel
almost anything that’s thrown at it. And if a stain is troublesome, the Invictus 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene qualities will win the day. The two latest additions are Hyperion, a luxurious super-soft saxony, and Hercules twist, a bi-colour version of the iVinci yarn that gives it a heather-like appearance. As with so many of our products, all Invictus carpets are multi-width in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m variants. With the distribution of Invictus increasing so dramatically, we’ve introduced a new display lectern for Hyperion and Hercules twist to make sure that these, together with all your Associated Weavers products, really fly out of your store.
Invincible performance. Unbeatable delivery. Just as our product range is constantly improving, so we’ve made substantial investments in our logistics to ensure that Hyperion and Hercules twist reach you quicker than ever. Our transport fleet has been increased by 35 vehicles and, in the UK, our local distribution partner has also added eight new vehicles to make sure we keep up with the demand expected from you and your customers. Wherever you are in the UK including Northern Ireland you will now enjoy
deliveries twice a week, for both rolls and cuts. We have also improved our deliveries to the more remote areas of the country. For distinctive merchandising and POS material, with new lecterns to show off Hercules and Hyperion at their very best, contact your area manager now to place your order. ASA and Oak Furniture Land disagree over ‘solid’ Oak Furniture Land has said an Advertising Standards Authority ruling that it can no longer describe its furniture as ‘solid hardwood’ could have far-reaching implications for the furniture retail industry and that the ASA has redefined terminology that has been used for hundreds of years. The ASA ruled that because the retailer used an oak wrap around pieces of wood glued together in the legs of its products, it could not describe them as solid hardwood, as shoppers would expect the leg to be made from one piece of wood. Oak Furniture Land has launched an appeal against the ruling. The chain’s dining table legs have between three and 10 pieces of wood, depending on the design, that run the length of the leg. ‘We are baffled and surprised by the ASA’s adjudication, and we vigorously stand by our claims that we do not and never have used veneers in our products and that we only sell 100% solid hardwood. We feel the ASA has misinterpreted age-old definitions of firstly, what is classed as solid and secondly, what is classed as a veneer,’ says Jason Bannister, Oak Furniture Land md and founder. ‘We firmly disagree with them on two points: Solid: The ASA has claimed that any timber that is not one piece, fully
intact and from a single tree should no longer be classed as solid. Take a look at most table tops, worktops, flooring and doors that are currently classed as solid. You will see that they are normally made up of planks of solid timber, usually glued together. These panels are then used to make furniture. The ASA has told us that these panels should not be classed as solid, effectively redefining terminology that has been used as solid for hundreds of years. ‘Veneer: when referring to one of our dining table legs, the ASA has deemed that using a thinner, yet weightbearing oak, surrounding a planked oak as mentioned, is classed as a veneer. We firmly disagree with this stance from the ASA. ‘Alongside a myriad of experts and customers, our belief is that the definition of a veneer is a thin sliver of real wood lifted from solid timbers. This sliver is usually glued over the top of MDF or chipboard and does not offer any kind of strength-bearing to the product itself – it is simply a cosmetic covering. This is not a method we use at Oak Furniture Land. The timbers the ASA have deemed as veneer are weight-bearing timbers, integral to the structure of the table leg,’ he says. Bannister says the chain has appealed ‘in the hope that common sense will prevail’.
Edinburgh store gets a makeover Counting sheep: Harrison Spinks has added a flock of 23 Wensleydale sheep to its Texel, Suffolk and Zwartbles sheep on its farm. Wensleydale wool is the finest and most valuable lustre longwool in the world, according to the Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Breeders’ Association, and is likely to be used in a limited edition bed.

The furniture and flooring department of Jenners department store in Edinburgh has had a major overhaul as part of a £100,000 investment. With the introduction of a series of galleries the department has tripled in size and the product offering has increased. ‘The new department makes for a new, bigger and better furniture and flooring offer for people in Edinburgh, offering more choice, knowledge and expertise. We have added new ranges, branded furniture galleries and totally revamped the area for a better shopping environment for our customers,’ says Elaine Ray, ScS business development director in charge of the House of Fraser concessions. Jenners says the investment has created the largest destination for branded furniture in the heart of Edinburgh, bringing brands such as La-Z-Boy, SiSi Italia and Parker Knoll to city centre shops. The revamped department showcases a number of new ranges including Harris Tweed from Tetrad.

High hopes for revamped stores as Carpetright sales slip
people
Carpetright sales have dropped further in the past four months. Previously the group had warned that like for like sales had fallen by 1% in the eight weeks to 25 June. Now it has told shareholders that like for like sales are down by 2.9% in the 25 week period to 22 October. It also says full year gross margin will be between 150-200 basis points lower due to ‘increased sourcing costs resulting from the devaluation of sterling, competitive market conditions and a mix impact.’ But it still estimates profits to be around £18.5m, as it expects to gain from the roll-out of its updated store format, of which there are now 49 branches. ‘Trading conditions in the UK in the first half reflect variable consumer demand and increased competitive pressures. Against this background, our plan to revitalise the UK business remains on track and we are now almost halfway towards our target of 100 store refurbishments in the current financial year, with investment in the first half weighted to the latter part of the period,’ says Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo. ‘The initial trading performance of these newly refurbished stores has been encouraging – they are outperforming comparable stores in the estate, giving us confidence that where we invest we are able to drive a material improvement in performance.’
Flooring buying and marketing group Bond Retail Marketing has promoted Carl Harris to md. Millennium Weavers has appointed Michael O’Brien (right) as sales manager for Ireland; Kenneth McNeill is agent for Scotland; Dominic Barcham is agent for South-East England; and Mark Garbett is agent for the south-east coast. Upholstery manufacturer Alpha Designs has appointed Barry Webb as sales director.
14
Refurbished stores are outperforming those in the older format
Walsh says the introduction of hard flooring sections in 26 stores has contributed to a 15% increase in laminate/luxury vinyl tile sales. He says trading in the rest of Europe is a little ahead of expectations. ‘As we enter the second half, we are looking forward to implementing the next phase of our refurbishment and rebranding programme as we continue our drive to update and revitalise the business. With the benefit of recent UK investment expected to flow through as the second half progresses, further significant refurbishment work already under way and a continued improvement in the rest of Europe, our guidance for the year as a whole remains unchanged,’ says Walsh.
Ezi buy for Victoria Victoria has continued with its acquisition policy, agreeing to pay up to £19.5m for underlay manufacturer Ezi Floor. The deal, funded by the group’s bank borrowings, will see it pay £6.5m up front, £1.625m annually for the next four years and up to £6.5m over the next four years if profits are improved over the period. Victoria says Ezi Floor will have EBITDA of £2.4m in the year to 31 March 2017 and it is looking to continue its cross-selling of underlay and carpets which began with last year’s purchase of Interfloor. ‘We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Ezi Floor. It is an efficient operation with very focused management that will stay with the business, and which is expected to make a positive contribution to Victoria’s profits. The business is highly regarded within the industry, fits very well with our growth strategy, and delivers immediately accretive earnings,’ says Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman. ‘We believe underlay to be a real opportunity and Victoria is already actively looking at other opportunities in the underlay sector,’ he adds.

Investment drive Online flooring retailer Flooring Superstore has invested £250,000 in its infrastructure to support its expansion and increase its offering to consumers. The company, based in Shildon, County Durham, has purchased 10 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans to support its UK-wide delivery service and cope with increased demand. With the addition of the vehicles, this has taken the firm’s total investment to nearly £1m this year, following the opening of a £650,000, 10,000sqft transport depot in Daventry, Northamptonshire which created eight jobs.

Order of merit Which comes first, fitted furniture or flooring? I’ve recently been out to see a fitted kitchen with a laminate floor and a fitted bedroom with a carpeted floor. The problems were different, but the cause was the same. The fitted wardrobes had moved out of alignment. Door locks didn’t catch and no amount of adjustment could bring them into line. In the kitchen the laminate floor was lifting in the area in front of the cooker. The installer had been back to check the job and had ensured there was an adequate expansion gap all around the room. But the lifting got worse. In both cases the furniture had been built after the flooring had been installed. The back of the wardrobes were resting on the carpet gripper but the fronts were standing on carpet and underlay. This had quickly compressed and the wall brackets had been pulled out so the wardrobes were no longer plumb and had twisted, so the locks ceased to function. Also, the fitted kitchen was standing
Laminate lifting due to entrapment by kitchen units
20
Interiors Monthly November 2016
on the laminate flooring. This was in spite of the installation instructions stating clearly that this should not be done. The units had effectively locked the flooring in place. It couldn’t expand or contract because of the weight on it, so when the weather was humid the flooring lifted: there was nothing else it could do. Fitted furniture is highly likely to outlast most kinds of flooring. Even if it doesn’t, when changing fitted furniture, a customer is likely to change the flooring as well. This is true whether it’s bedroom, kitchen, home office or other kinds of fitted units. Of course, it’s easier for the floorlayer to fit in an open room than to have to cut around fitted units, but it’s much easier for the furniture installer to fit on to a solid floor than a carpet. If you sell both types of products you can project manage the furniture and the flooring so everything is done correctly and in the right sequence. But for others it can be awkward when the customer has already arranged for work to be done by another supplier.
If we’re striving to do the best for our customers we sometimes have to be firm. Our expertise and experience will tell us what the pitfalls might be, and the costs and consequences of things going wrong. It’s better to give the customer the best advice even when it may cause some inconvenience. Correcting problems later can be even more disruptive. In these examples, the wardrobes will have to be refitted, with the carpet taken up and fitted around them. The laminate flooring will have to be cut away underneath the units and end panels and then relaid with expansion breaks around the furniture. In both cases this means far more work than the original installation. But the greatest cost is not the installers’ time. It’s the damage to the retailers’ reputations and the impact on their future business that will cost more, and that can’t be measured. The first store opened on 11 October and heralds ’an exciting new phase’
All hail the mini We’ve got mini skirts, mini cars and mini computers, and now Mini Habitat Sainsbury’s has begun the rollout of Mini Habitat branches within its supermarkets allowing shoppers to see and touch products to give them more confidence to buy online. The first 2,000sqft branch has opened in Sainsbury’s new Nine Elms store in London. There are plans to launch a further four UK stores, ranging from 1,400sqft to 2,000sqft, by early 2017 in Reading, Solihull, Epsom and St Albans. It is looking to create a network of regional touch-point stores to help support its multichannel growth strategy. Investment in smaller footprint concession formats is aimed to further both online and offline brand awareness with new audiences as well as increase online shopper confidence by allowing customers to experience product quality in convenient store locations. When Habitat’s parent Home Retail Group sold Homebase to Australian firm Bunnings earlier this year, Habitat was forced to

close the concessions it had in Homebase branches. The Mini Habitat stores will include more than 600 products – all designed by the Habitat design team in London – with a range of price points across furniture, upholstery, lighting, homewares and textiles. Customers will be encouraged to interact with product as well as explore habitat.co.uk on integrated digital screens and in-store iPads that allow them to browse the full product portfolio of over 4,500 products. Habitat staff will talk customers through products and highlight options online that can be ordered for home delivery. Clare Askem, Habitat md, says the new relationship with Sainsbury’s offers the Habitat brand significant growth potential. ‘We’ve seen our brand evolve rapidly over the past few years and the opportunity to create a network of local stores ‚‚‚

with a new national partner that will support our multichannel business strategy is a really exciting prospect. We’ll be working closely with Sainsbury’s on these pilot stores to understand the full potential of this format and gauge customer reaction, but I’m confident that our brand will connect with Sainsbury’s shoppers and make Habitat more accessible to shoppers both on the high street and online,’ she says. ‘This is the start of an exciting new phase for us and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to open the first Mini Habitat so quickly in our new flagship store at Nine Elms. Habitat is a fantastic, iconic brand which I’m sure will be very popular with Sainsbury’s customers who will benefit from being able to shop across all of our brands under one roof,’ says Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s chief executive. Geometricks Amtico offers a range of predefined and ready-to-lay designs
Designers’ Choice has 84 product combinations
Amtico has introduced Designers’ Choice: a collection of predefined and ready-to-lay designs that uses 84 unique product combinations across 14 different geometric laying patterns. ‘We wanted to create a collection that excites your imagination, introduces innovative ways to use Signature products, and helps you create beautiful floors,’ says Sarah Escott, Amtico senior designer. ‘The beauty of our Designers’ Choice laying patterns starts with our advanced cutting capabilities, which allows our design team to develop original and precise patterns: patterns that we’ve brought to life with expertly balanced and considered product combinations from our premium Signature Collection. We’ve experimented with textures, tones and palettes to bring sophisticated, surprising and original choices.’ Signature has been used in a new restaurant in the Xscape entertainment venue in Castleford, West Yorkshire. Giraffe Burgers and Cocktails uses a bespoke geometric laying pattern created by hospitality designer Harrison and Giraffe using Composite Calcium, Paris and Helsinki from Signature. Signature is Amtico’s flagship collection of 163 products: 69 Woods, 43 Stones and 51 Abstracts. ’This new restaurant concept is highly visual and colourful, so the bar and restaurant spaces needed to be fresh and uptempo. The use of Amtico has helped to ensure the areas are a clear reflection of the brand, while offering excellent durability for a venue that receives high levels of footfall all year round,’ says Kevin Grima, Harrison creative director. Shaping up for next year Moduleo explores key trends for 2017 With 2016 drawing to a close, David Bigland, Moduleo UK and Eire md, has identified five key flooring trends for 2017. Geometric: 2017’s hero trend will be geometric design with a huge rise in consumers already opting for this quirky and eccentric look. Geometric flooring offers a striking, contemporary finish that takes centre-stage to provide a creative and sleek ambience. This versatile look works well in most rooms, especially living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. ‘Traditionally, consumers implemented geometric shapes into their interiors through wallpaper and accessories. However, since the launch of our Moduleo Moods collection earlier this year, we’ve had an incredibly positive response to our triangle, hexagon and diamond shaped tiles in particular,’ he says. Moduleo Moods offers customers a creative studio in which they can combine 10 new flooring formats to create up to 110 unique wood and stone-effect designs using the wide range of tile shapes. Grey tones: ‘Next year we’re anticipating

the popularity of grey flooring to continue to grow. In recent months, grey has proven to be the go-to choice for those looking to decorate their bedrooms and living rooms. The look is traditional with a modern twist, and is ideal for creating a comfortable and welcoming environment all year round. The Blackjack Oak 22937 from our Transform collection provides a stunning finish and, as it’s available through Moduleo Moods, it comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes,’ says Bigland. Timeless tiles: Classic interior design looks are here to stay for 2017 and beyond. As vintage and retro trends continue to dominate the housing market, traditional woods are certainly still fashionable, whether it be a contemporary apartment in the city, or a Victorian terrace in the country, classic woods offer the versatility to look equally at home in just about any environment. All about textures: As interior design trends continue to be inspired by the great outdoors, natural wood-effect products featuring registered embossing will continue to be in demand for the year ahead. As consumers look to create a warm and cosy feeling throughout
their homes, textured rustic finishes will be on trend for areas of relaxation, such as the living room and the bedroom. ‘Our Impress collection features registered emboss and provides the ultimate in realistic and nature-inspired design, but with the added benefits of luxury vinyl such as increased durability, excellent heat and sound-insulation, and an easy-to-clean finish. Impress features five wood designs with 22 colour options, in both dryback and click.’ Bespoke is better: ‘Since the launch of our Moduleo Moods collection, we’ve seen a huge surge in customers looking to make a statement with their flooring. Creating a truly unique look is becoming a bigger priority and next year, as the catalogue of products on the market continues to develop, consumers will be faced with more options than ever before – making a bespoke look much more accessible to the masses,’ explains Bigland. The Moduleo Moods room visualiser is now online and thanks to the choice of shapes, sizes and colours, a bespoke look is available at the click of a button. Visit: www.moduleo.co.uk

Altered Gravity includes 14 patterns
Altered images Brintons has again collaborated with American designer Stacy Garcia Brintons has launched its eighth collection created with American designer Stacy Garcia, Altered Gravity: a range of contemporary art-inspired carpet designs. It includes 14 patterns and draws inspiration from diverse periods in the history of modern art; abstract expressionism collides with contemporary graphic design and digitally rendered textures melt between layers of mixed media paintings. ‘Altered Gravity is about exploring the boundaries of experimental design techniques and mediums. We’re bringing it back to the basics of fine art and melding it with new technologies,’ explains Garcia. ‘Like my design aesthetic, the process of creating art evolves constantly. We’re always adapting, rearranging, adding and subtracting – creating layers that form into something beautiful.’ Wild graphic strokes and frenzied paint splats marry with translucent floral forms to create boldly scaled designs for the range with pattern repeats varying from 6in to 48in. ‘Original works of art are translated into expressive Axminster carpet designs using complex colour and textural overlays,’ says Jane Bradley-Bain, Brintons senior designer. Gainsborough Beds launched its Dreamloft collection of hand-tufted beds, with a 3D super stretch fabric and natural fillings. In three easy moves the mattress top can be unzipped, flipped over and zipped back up again. The company says there is no need to turn the entire mattress as it is only the filling content in the top that needs turning. Sealy, attending the annual Bed Show for the fifth year running, unveiled a number of innovative products. A re-imagined Hybrid Collection took centre stage at the event – boasting pioneering technology and an additional feature: it does not need to be turned or rotated, ever. The innovative development includes the Ultima 2800 and Regency 3600, both of which contain Sealy’s individually encased pocket springs and Geltex, a gel-infused foam that provides breathability, pressure relief, comfort and support. Also unveiled at the show was the Pocket Ortho Collection which combines
Sealy’s award-winning Ortho and Pocket ranges to deliver the support and orthopaedically-correct designs the brand is renowned for, making for a luxurious sleeping experience. Designs include the Delphina 1400, the Naverro 1400 and Romano 1400, all of which feature 1,400 pocket springs and are hand-tufted but differ when it comes to the comfort factor. The Delphina 1400 contains Geltex to deliver a combination of pressure relief, comfort and support; the Naverro 1400 boasts Unirail, a polyethylene system enabling the sleeper to use the entire sleeping surface without fear of rolling
off; and the Romano 1400 incorporates memory foam to aid a restful night’s sleep. These innovations arrived in time to tie in with Sealy’s World of Sport campaign that emphasises the intrinsic link between getting a good night’s rest and athletic performance and recovery. Equally important for training and recovering from injury, sleep is vital for health and wellbeing as it restores the brain and activates the healing process, rehydrating the spinal discs. To promote the World of Sport campaign, Sealy invited its ambassador, Phil Tufnell, to attend the show and host an exclusive meet and greet on its stand. During his cricket career, he was nicknamed The Cat because of his propensity to be found sleeping in the dressing room, so understands the importance of a good night’s rest. ‘It [sleep] really does play a major role when you’re training hard and competing in your field. Getting enough rest was always top of my list of priorities because it really did have an impact,’ says Tufnell. With more than 60 years’ experience in the design and development of cuttingedge bed and mattress technology, the release of Sealy’s innovative products highlight its continued efforts into researching and developing products to ensure the brand remains at the forefront of the industry. Support group Hypnos introduced two collections Hypnos debuted the Natural Comfort and Luxury No Turn mattress collections. Natural Comfort comprises four seasonal turn mattresses, each packed with generous layers of natural, breathable materials, including the finest fleece wool, silk, horse hair and alpaca wool, for a beautifully cushioned and comfortable mattress. They are upholstered with Belgian damask to provide a silky surface for sleep. Head-to-toe zonal body support is offered with an industry-first three-zone UltraSens pocket spring system that boasts an intelligent three-in-one geometric design with intuitive active turn technology. This three-zoned system has been designed to seamlessly adjust to the contours and movement of the body, focusing on the three main areas that need maximum support; head and shoulders, back and hips, and legs and feet. ‘The springs in each of these areas are tailored to cocoon and suspend the hips and lower back, and provide a sumptuously soft feel around your shoulders and legs,’ says Chris Ward, Hypnos group marketing director. ‘Zoning the springs in this way provides support to the heavier parts of the body for more targeted support and pressure relief. By minimising pressure points, the mattress helps to alleviate stress and aches on your muscles, promote blood circulation as well as enhancing spinal alignment for a deeper, undisturbed and rejuvenating night’s sleep.’ The Luxury No Turn collection has three models and each mattress features a ReActive six, seven or eight ‘active turn’ pocket spring system respectively, where each ‘turn’ of the spring independently senses the contours of the body and weight distribution, adjusting and supporting any change in the sleeping position, the result of which is total spinal and body support. It is also upholstered in Belgian damask, with layers of wool, alpaca, Solotex luxury cushioning and Talalay latex.

The mattresses require no turning at all, just seasonal rotation, making them extremely practical, ensuring hassle-free handling and minimising care to one side of the mattress. ‘Our latest collections have been responsibly created with the customer
and their wellbeing in mind and designed to offer them a practical sleep solution that doesn’t scrimp on natural fillings, comfort, style or quality. Furthermore all mattresses are 100% recyclable,’ adds Ward. Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

On track South-East Asia’s largest furniture event returns for its 23rd edition
The Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) 2017, the biggest furniture trade show in South-East Asia, is geared up to open next year’s furniture buying season in Asia. Entering its 23rd edition, MIFF takes place on 8-11 March 2017 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) in Kuala Lumpur. Filling more than 80,000sqm, the show is on track for another strong performance. It has resounding support from returning and new exhibitors taking the opportunity to set up a stronger presence when the show expands by a fifth to 100,000sqm at the new Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and PWTC in 2018. With 500 exhibiting companies from 12 countries and regions showcasing the full range of furniture and thousands of new products, MIFF remains a benchmark in global furniture trade, drawing 20,000 visitors from as many as 140 countries and regions. It now has the added boost of an online trading platform with Alibaba.com that debuted last year. The diverse international presence, including one in four buyers coming from a neighbouring ASEAN country, bolsters MIFF’s position as the gateway to capture business opportunities in South-East Asia and other emerging markets such as South Asia,

International superstore Imm Cologne is ‘probably the most comprehensive furniture store in the world’ In just over two months, the trade fair duo of imm Cologne/LivingKitchen (16-22 January 2017) will open its doors. With around 1,300 exhibitors from 50 countries across 270,000sqm of exhibition space, the event will again present itself as ‘probably the biggest and most comprehensive furniture store in the world,’ says Gerald Böse, Koelnmesse, president and ceo. Just under 70% of the exhibitors will be coming from outside Germany, primarily from Europe. More than 110,000 visitors are expected on the trade days. ‘Imm Cologne will once again present itself as a comprehensive interior design event that reflects entire product lines across all interiors segments and price categories for all sales channels currently in use,’ says Böse. The event can chalk up interesting first-time exhibitors as well as returners in almost all segments, but particularly in the Smart segment, in Halls 7 and 8. ‘Major companies that serve the middle of the market have again, or for the first time, confirmed their participation because not only do they reach the market-relevant purchasing structures in German-speaking countries, but also the high-turnover distributors from the whole of Europe,’ he says. ‘It is precisely this international acceptance on the buying side that clearly distinguishes imm Cologne from

London Fabric Show Chelsea FC 27-28 February 2017
EXHIBITION GUIDE
Hat-trick London Fabric returns to Chelsea FC in 2017
Abraham Moon & Sons and Weverij Van Neder will be among the exhibitors
Next year will see the London Fabric Show return to the executive boxes of Chelsea FC for the third time. Held from 27-28 February it will again be hosted by the BFM and bring together producers and suppliers of superior fabrics for the upholstery, bed and soft furnishing industries. The success of this year’s show, with exhibitors reporting excellent sales and a substantial increase in visitor numbers, has resulted in more exhibitors taking part in 2017. Extra space has been taken with a conference suite beside the executive boxes. New exhibitors include Mersem, Tekso and Gezderi from Turkey and Arruma Trapos from Portugal. Mersem, from the Bursa province of Turkey famed for its textile producers, has produced fabrics mainly for contract upholstery and soft furnishings since 1997. Ranging from neutrals to complex

patterns with vivid colours its fabrics are for various markets. Also from Turkey but hailing from Istanbul, is Tekso, specialising in high-end jacquard fabrics. In business since 1999 it produces both simple and complex designs for the upholstery market. Another new exhibitor from Istanbul is Gezderi that specialises in high quality artificial leathers and suede, which it exports all over the world. Offering high production rates and fast delivery it will bring a different flavour to the show. Arruma Trapos from Maia in Portugal, creates and produces high quality cottons and cotton blends, including some with wool. Its designs are mostly checks and stripes or a combination of both and are for use in upholstery, beds and soft furnishings. ‘We have been working hard to make the London Fabric Show better than ever.
We have increased the number of exhibitors and increased the amount of exhibition space. We have a smart new website for the show and in 2017 there will be a greater variety of fabrics than ever before. Naturally authentic Key trends that inspire the products for next year Ambiente will present four trends selected from the products of the show’s 4,400 exhibitors by trends forecaster Bora Herke Palmisano. The trends cover a wide spectrum and offer an overview of the entire sector and its new products. ‘The four styles bring together the key features that will inspire the new season in 2017. On the one hand, importance is given to shapes and textures that are inspired by nature and are reflected in a relatively discreet approach to design; on the other hand, there is a focus on a degree of care and a certain
credibility in the way materials are handled, with a view to creating good quality, genuinely authentic products,’ says Annetta Palmisano, BHP co-founder. ‘Patterns and motifs are combined in a whimsical, sometimes apparently chaotic patchwork. In contrast, there are clean-lined designs, sculptural in form and full of character, aimed at a traditionally modern elegance.’ Ambiente takes place in Frankfurt from 10-14 February 2017. Visit: http://ambiente.messefrankfurt.com
DELICATE STRUCTURE: Filigree structures and textures are inspired by nature. With the help of innovative manufacturing and finishing processes, they create refined, approachable surfaces. They invite the observer to touch them and provide distinctly sensual pleasure. Ice crystals, the surface effects of water, leaf structures, sand shaped by the wind – elaborately worked surfaces, 3D printing and laser sintering replicate natural phenomena, producing breathtakingly artistic designs.
HONEST MATERIALS: High quality craftsmanship with a commitment to design keeps traditions alive. A meticulous approach to the original materials creates products that are grounded in the earth, that are as unostentatious as they are durable. Simple looks with the charm of the irregular – earthenware, enamel, cast iron, linen and a colour palette ranging from wood to berries are the things that characterise this new trend.
JUMBLED PATTERN: A homage to carefree youth, an invitation to let the imagination roam free: in the untamed chaos of patterns and motifs, the frankly fanciful plays an equal role alongside the nostalgic and the ingenious. In this creative smorgasbord of style, the geometrical meets the representational, the bizarre meets the naive, vintage meets a home-made look. Bright colours set the tone here – and toys, buttons and emblems create cheerful accents.
NOTABLE SHAPES: A clean-lined and characterful interior design with strong silhouettes define traditional modern elegance anew. The epicentre is sculptural form, self-confident, monolithic and heavily charged. Dense materials, dark hardwoods, leather, velvet, marble and metal produce contrasting surfaces – and in striking combinations, too, with some inlay-effects, diamond motifs and geometrical patterns.

Make an impact Good display techniques can work on exhibition stands and in-store ‘You’ve invested in the perfect stand space or store and set objectives but now the task is to stand out and make potential customers take notice of you. Presentation matters because it says so much about who you are as a company, what your products are about and how you want to be positioned in the marketplace,’ says Theresa Raymond, January Furniture Show joint organiser. ‘The biggest challenge you face at an exhibition is similar to a retailer: getting potential customers to visit you, and stay there, giving you the opportunity to make a great impression and engage with them,’ says Laraine Janes, January Furniture Show joint organiser. Here are some of their top tips: Have focus: Work out how to draw customers to you. Don’t try to put every new range or collection at the front or in the centre. Pick two or three key pieces and use them to pique interest. Once a potential customer is on the stand, show them what else you have to offer. Plan: A thoughtful, considered design
Interiors Monthly November 2016
will interest would-be buyers. Be inventive and express your brand fully. Plan every last detail and function so the space achieves your objectives. Optimise the height, width and depth to generate interest and be effective. Less can be more: Don’t be guilty of cramming as much product in as possible. Too much and you can look sloppy and unfocused. Equally, too little can give the impression of a lack of ideas and direction. Get the right balance. Invest in it: Tempting as it might be to spend as little as possible on your design, remember you’re paying for your location so make the most of it. You don’t need an all singing, all dancing area. Good presentation can be found in great graphics, eye-catching colours, a smart layout and well-chosen accessories. Make your stand welcoming: The exhibition is your office away from the office: as visitors see your environment, they see your company and make a judgement on whether to do business with you. Walled in stands create a
barrier and may appear unwelcoming, so keep your space as open as possible. Have appropriate lighting as dimly lit stands do not engage buyers or make product look desirable. Get your team on board: The most attractive proposition to a delegate is a well-trained, smiling staff member with an offer of refreshment. Avoid standing at the edge of the stand with your arms folded, or sitting at the back working. Remember people buy people. ‘Having a good, or even great stand where it, and the products on it remain virtually the same year after year won’t work either. Standing still means getting behind. Buyers and consumers are conditioned to look for new, so if you’re not launching a collection then experiment with a new stand design or a different way of presenting existing product. Good presentation can make the difference between a successful show and one that fails to deliver,’ says Raymond. Visit: www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

Journey into the unknown Heimtextil’s Theme Park explores trends As the largest specialist trade fair for home and contract textiles, Heimtextil functions as a barometer for trends and yardstick for quality textiles with excellent design and innovative functionality. This is why Messe Frankfurt got the Heimtextil trend under way in 1991 and has consistently expanded it ever since. Every year, a trendtable with international members investigates the most important universal trends and supplies product developers, creative
teams, furnishers and designers with valuable advice and reliable trend statements. At Heimtextil 2017, the trend concept continues with the Theme Park as the central trend-related and inspirational area of Heimtextil in Hall 6.0. ‘Based on the theme of exploration, we have looked for materials, textures and elements to bring innovations to life. In doing so, we discovered fabrics that gave rise to surprising combinations when
merged with other materials. It is these nine fabrics from unknown worlds that captivate us. At the same time, the natural aspects reveal an unexpected sensuousness,’ says Natalie Weinmann, Carlin International lifestyle and innovation senior consultant. There are four main trends: Virtual Explorations, Cultural Explorations, Planetary Explorations, and Natural Explorations. Visit: http://heimtextil.messefrankfurt.com
VIRTUAL EXPLORATIONS: Digital processes enable a new interpretation of transparency. Thanks to a mother-of-pearl-like shimmer, fabric is brought to life in a vibrant way. Films and silk are reminiscent of reflections in water thanks to dazzling holographic brilliance. Extravagant floral patterns, embroidery, jacquards and lace dominate and give rise to astonishing fascination. A new form of digital exoticism is born. Structures from cell organisms inspire and convey a new understanding of 3D. Organic animal structures give technical materials a sensuous/poetic flexibility. Colours are lively and reminiscent of water.
NATURAL EXPLORATIONS: The way to rediscovering urban aspects takes us through nature. The use of natural materials in industrial manufacturing processes is more contemporary now than ever before – not least out of respect for our planet. But this isn’t enough: the interior is entering into a symbiosis with nature. Touch is dominated by natural fibre effects such as wood-like reliefs or bark structures. The materials make use of geometric elements to imitate the plant world. Details from the animal world are incorporated with the help of textures. This gives rise to camouflage patterns, both original and finished, from the animal and plant world. Intensive green tones mix with colours inspired by tree bark and earth.
PLANETARY EXPLORATIONS: In an unknown interplanetary world, raw materials are used and the interior becomes a mineral itself. A magical brilliance is extracted from the materials which are given protective characteristics. From this wealth of materials arise material extracts and textures hitherto unknown. New wipe techniques form fine structures of mineral-like delicacy. The principle of controlled chances leads to new kinds of shading. Deliberately voluminous materials are reminiscent of the surface of the moon and serve as soft, protective shells. The colour palette plays with light and dark and oscillates between bright white and ash-coloured tones.
CULTURAL EXPLORATIONS: A new urban multiculturalism unfolds: various cultural influences merge to form a unique multinational in-culture. This transformation can also be seen in interiors. A focus on particular cultures is increasingly disappearing. Traditional techniques are being modernised and merged, resulting in highly modern and luxurious modifications. Pigment colours combine with urban shades to form a universal ethnic look.

Tendence Frankfurt 24-27 June 2017
EXHIBITION GUIDE
Sniffing out the trends Tendence sets the scene for the year Tendence (24-27 June 2017) is Germany’s most international and largest show for consumer goods in the second half of the year with an extensive range of products from the home, furnishing, decorating, gifts, jewellery and fashion accessory segments. Top brands and key players show their collections for the coming spring and summer plus presenting their Christmas trends giving retailers the opportunity to place follow-up orders for the festive season. At this year’s show the rich variety of wood, together with its unique beauty appeared in wreaths, bowls, candle holders, lampshades and side tables, as well as in delicately carved roses, animal heads, and mobiles; sometimes made up of smaller pieces, carved from the bark or rough-hewn from the trunk, polished or untreated. There is no avoiding wood either this winter or in the spring of 2017. It is a unique material in all respects and brings a piece of nature into the home. Products are almost all left in natural finishes, occasionally sprayed in white or an elegant gold, silver or copper. For the summer, products made from mussel shells join them, on their own or formed into garlands, strung together as mobiles, assembled as pot-holders or
made into Venetian-style chandeliers with lots of tiny shells – delicate and quite unique. The pastel duo, rose quartz and serenity remain faithfully with us and will, in the spring, not only be creating a stir in the world of fashion, but in interior design too. This is proving to be particularly effective in Easter decorations, which get a contemporary lift with fashionably vibrant colours, as well as some new decorative ideas. Another strongly represented theme is the seaside. Lighthouses, ships and dunes are typical motifs for a stylistic scenario, which avails itself of the entire
palette of blues. To complement the summery seaside feeling are scented candles, also inspired by the sea. On the other hand, there is the Tropical Party which invites us to join in the festivities with jazzy colours and motifs, including flamingoes, pineapples and palm trees. Animal motifs – owls, foxes, and deer – are all very much part of the worlds of stationery and interior design. Starting this season, the dachshund is now poking an inquisitive nose round the corner and is on the way to becoming a new trendsetter. Visit: http://tendence.messefrankfurt.com

Innovation and exports Indonesian manufacturers are looking to overseas markets Indonesian furniture and handicraft manufacturers have been urged to boost innovation to further increase the value of their products, both for domestic and export markets. Bernardus Arwin, Indonesia Furniture Industry and Craft Association (HIMKI) vice chairman for promotion and marketing, says the country has an ample cultural uniqueness that can be absorbed and used as inspiration for innovation. ‘At US$2bn our export value today is far behind that of other countries. We are not even included in the top 10 furniture exporting countries in the world. In Asia, we are still behind Malaysia and Vietnam. Vietnam is actually a newcomer in the industry and 10 years ago its export
value was only US$20m. But today, they sit on the seventh place with an export value reaching US$7.6bn,’ he says. Arwin added that he hoped Indonesian furniture industry players could continue to increase their production with quality products that have international standards, including in terms of product certification. HIMKI is the umbrella organisation for the furniture and handicraft industry in Indonesia. Previously each sector had its own body, AMKRI and ASMINDO. The Indonesian government has set the industry an export target of US$5bn by 2019. At the forefront of this is the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX). Taking place at Jakarta International
Expo from 11-14 March, the show is maintaining its previous theme of The Essence of Infinite Innovation. This year’s show attracted 9,140 buyers from 112 countries, headed by the USA, Australia and Spain. The event was supported by 500 local and international companies, with foreign participants coming from Singapore, Malaysia, China, USA, Spain, Australia, and Taiwan. In 2017, a major extension of the Jakarta International Expo halls will allow IFEX to be even larger and more vibrant than before. IFEX 2017 offers international buyers quality product, more participants, more space, and more participating countries to expand business into new horizons. Visit: www.ifexindonesia.com

EXHIBITION GUIDE
A roaring success NBF is gearing up for another impressive show for the bed industry The Bed Show, run by the National Bed Federation, will return for the eighth consecutive year at the Telford International Centre. The UK’s biggest bed event which brings together key retail buyers and leading suppliers for two intensive days of business activity and networking, will take place from 19-20 September next year. ‘We had our biggest visitor numbers to date for this year’s show – up by nearly 10%,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. ‘With more than 80 brands exhibiting, among them some of the best and biggest names in the bed industry, it’s little wonder that exhibitors and visitors declared it another roaring success.’ Only members of the NBF will be
invited to exhibit at 2017’s Bed Show and since the introduction of the independently audited and updated Code of Practice, buyers can be confident all the exhibitors are meeting their legal obligations and supplying products
that are safe, clean and honest. A Gala Dinner and Awards night will be held on the Tuesday evening of the show for the seventh year of the Bed Industry Awards. Visit: www.bedshow.co.uk

Conley
Enhancements Listening to customers is paying dividends Working closely with new and existing customers to deliver a more specific and tailored product is proving successful for Collins and Hayes and demonstrates the company’s skills and flexibility. ‘Conley is a true example of our contemporary elegance and is a definite bestseller. Launched at Spring Long Point in May 2015, Conley will again be at the January Furniture Show with an enhanced fabric and leather offer. With trademark contrast piping, curvaceous arms and stylish pulls in the back cushions, Conley has a wonderfully sumptuous sit we are very proud of,’ says Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes md. Stoop is another proven success that continues to attract interest from new parties. ‘A deep lounger and sofa range available in two standard depths have been designed for whiling away the evenings in extreme luxury. Its gentle curves and lines are enhanced by the shaped solid wood
plinth for a sophisticated finishing touch,’ says O’Flynn. ‘We have been reviving and improving our swatch range with natural yarn fabrics sourced from lovely places around the world. Our unique manufacturing process of bonding a wool interliner to our fully boarded frame enables us to leave natural fabrics free from back coating chemicals. This is a unique solution that allows the fabric to breathe and be chemical free as well as soft and supple as it was intended. Boarding the outside of our sofa frames improves the longevity and performance of the furniture that is to be expected from a furniture brand of this quality and calibre.’ New POS material is now available to support the brand and its natural fabric solution. These include swatch trolleys, room divider swatch stands, new signage and an array of acrylic stand up cards and wall panels. Visit: www.collinsandhayes.com

Trio goes fast forward Two collections have been added to Brintons’ QuickWeave To meet the growing demand among installers for design-led carpet that can be made to order and installed in below average lead times, Brintons has extended its recently developed innovative QuickWeave series with two collections. The addition of Aurora and Sequence means there are now three collections (including Inception) providing installers and project designers on a tight deadline with a wider choice of woven axminster designs in a broad spectrum of colours that can be supplied in only six weeks. Brintons’ design team developed the series to reflect today’s trends with contemporary patterns complementing transitional styles such as plaids, stripes, geometric, abstract and layered design themes. Clever texturing techniques including mottles, striés and fades give depth to the designs while optimising practical applications for hospitality and other contract projects. The 80/20 QuickWeave broadloom woven axminster carpet is available in five quality specifications from 7 to 11 rows, making

it suitable for all types of area from light to heavy use. QuickWeave was a natural step for us as it allows for the creation of the high quality carpets that we are renowned for but within a fraction of the time associated with custom projects,’ says Andrew Wilcock, Brintons group marketing manager. Breathe is made from wood fibres
New generation QA Flooring Solutions offers a different underlay material ‘So far there have been two generations of underlay. The first was made from heavy rubber, comfortable but a nightmare to fit and remove. The second was the introduction of polyurethane foam; efficient and versatile, this has been developed to fulfil a number of roles. Now there’s a completely new generation of underlay: Breathe is truly a step forward in the flooring industry. It’s made from natural sustainable wood fibre with no harmful chemicals or formaldehydes used in its production – so not only is it better for the environment, it doesn’t give off any VOCs or harmful vapours after installation,’ says Garry Atmore, QA Flooring Solutions marketing manager. But the largest benefit from the wood fibres is – as the name suggests – breathability. ‘In tests, Breathe filtered out a remarkable 95% of dust from the air that passed through it, trapping even the smallest particles. That means enhanced air quality, a fresher-feeling home and an easier life for allergy sufferers – and it can be used
92
Interiors Monthly November 2016
throughout properties to maximise the health benefits,’ explains Atmore. Meeting BS5808 performance standards, Breathe’s density and high compressive strength help to keep carpets in excellent condition and make them comfortable underfoot. It has a low thermal resistance of 1.3tog, making it suitable for use with underfloor heating, and is stable, lightweight, easy to cut and install. Its breathability prevents mould and damp building up underneath, so it can also safely be laid over old parquet flooring. ‘Breathe is a really exciting step forward for the industry. It had a very positive reception at The Flooring Show as it has a unique appeal to consumers. It also has the potential to turn underlay from an out-of-sight commodity to a positive lifestyle choice for home-owners, an investment in a healthier home and the wellbeing of their families,’ adds Atmore. Twist and shout about it There was plenty for Adam Carpets to celebrate with its Castlemead Twist Adam Carpets launched six colours for its popular Castlemead Twist range, as it celebrated its 25th anniversary, at The Flooring Show. The company also announced that Castlemead Twist has been awarded the Platinum certificate by British Wool for all the plain colours in the range which shows the wool content is 100% British. ‘It was very important to us as a British manufacturer to secure the Platinum certificate for Castlemead Twist,’ says Eamonn Prescott, Adam Carpets sales and marketing director. ‘We know that British wool is the best and most durable fibre to use within our carpets. To be able to announce this at the same time as launching six colours into the range ensures a strong message to our retail customers about our colour and quality, the two hallmarks of an Adam Carpet.’ The six new colours include three grey tones, a natural, a fresh green and a sharp yellow. ‘Our research has led us to believe that yellow will be a really strong interior colour over the next 12 months. Grey is already popular and yellow is seen as its most natural coordinating colour. The fresh green is expected to do well in the coming spring,’ says Prescott. But the new colours and Platinum certificate are not the only key selling points. ‘Many of our customers may be unaware that we have full control over our dyeing of all the plain colours within Castlemead Twist,’ continues Prescott. ‘This means that all the plain colours within the range are also mothproofed, which is proving to be very important especially in the south of the country.’ Visit: www.adamcarpets.com

Ultimate Rug Co is boosting its brands Following the successful establishment of the three Ultimate Rug Co brands this year – Hand Made Carpets, Prestige and Ultimate Rug – the company has continued to develop the portfolio of products to strengthen each area of the brands, and has a catalogue for each brand. This has enabled it to access many new customers who were previously unable to identify the best areas of its offer for them. It has also allowed the company to focus the stock into the bestselling areas to give its customer base its best service levels. Also, strengthening the sales office has brought benefits to customer service levels. Having achieved significant sales growth in premium wool machine-made products and top end polyester shaggy designs, the wool offer has now been enhanced. Additions include the Eco natural wool contemporary offer, and new lines in the wool textured ranges from India, bringing this area up to date and
achieving market penetration in a short time. In the Ultimate rug catalogue it has itemised its most commercial offers and introduced Rug Style to encompass its bestselling, low priced volume lines. This gives it four separate brochures, each one a specialist in its own right for customers to either concentrate on a particular brand or mix and match as required. It is now working on adding Ultimate Home Living to the group featuring complementary homeware fabrics. Products such as Indo Kazak and Venice Hand looms are being sourced by the company’s agents in India and finished to its specification. Tel: 0161 339 2148

REVIEW Timbertherm can be installed on most surfaces and because they are the same size as standard planks there are no floor height issues
All in one solution Wood flooring with integrated underfloor heating was unveiled Timbertherm made its UK debut at the show. Harnessing integral far infrared technology, the product provides a wood floor design with integral underfloor heating. Cost effective and simple to lay, the all in one solution creates a stylish, healthy and eco-friendly surface for residential and commercial applications: from family kitchens and bathrooms, to spa or healthcare environments. ‘Available in a spectrum of on-trend finishes, Timbertherm features a high performance engineered construction made of eight individual layers. The surface layer comprises sustainable maple, elm or walnut, with plywood core layers below, into which strips of nano-carbon conductors are embedded,’ explains Robert Cornford, Timbertherm head of channel. ‘An innovative gloss or satin lacquer prefinish, tested to IP67 (Ingress Protection), provides a waterproof surface.’ All boards are 1.2m long x 160mm wide and 15mm deep with a 0.6mm wear layer. Like sunlight, far infrared heat gently warms objects rather than the air around it. Timbertherm holds the heat and slowly releases it, without creating air currents or raising dust particles. Temperature fluctuations between floor and ceiling are also minimised. ‘These combined factors reduce heating costs by up to 60% and give 40% more efficiency, achieving an even temperature of up to 26degC in less than five minutes. Timbertherm’s far
96
Interiors Monthly November 2016
infrared heat also provides a healthier environment for allergy sufferers and promotes other health benefits, including increased blood circulation and oxygen levels, and stimulation in collagen production,’ claims Cornford. Timbertherm can be installed on most dry, level surfaces – from concrete to plywood – in new builds and renovations. The first board is connected to the cord power, which is positioned along the edge of the room. Boards are then laid end to end, corresponding male and female connectors are joined and the planks are tapped together. At the end of each row, waterproof plugs are screwed on to the connectors, and rows are joined using a standard tongue and groove joint. Because Timbertherm is the same size as a standard, engineered plank, floor height issues associated with separate heating pads are eliminated, as is the subfloor preparation necessary with traditional wet underfloor heating systems. This results in greatly reduced installation time and substantial cost savings. All Timbertherm boards have a microchip, which allows the date of manufacture to be traced, and the product is offered with a 10-year guarantee. Boards can be individually replaced, if required, and production complies with EN60335-1 and EN60335-2-96 (patent pending). Visit: www.timbertherm.co.uk

Woodpecker revealed its rebranding Woodpecker’s first time at Harrogate marked the unveiling of its naturally inspired rebrand. Visitors could see the change immediately from the imagery which focuses on the connection between feet and the floors that we walk on, evoking memories of places we’ve walked before. Large photographs defined the look and feel of Woodpecker’s stand, which also featured a brighter colour palette and refreshed POS displays. ‘Becoming more attractive to the end user was a strong motivation for the rebrand. The new theme helps to trigger emotional connections, inspiring consumers to discover more about Woodpecker products. This, supported by a new website, digital advertising and social media activity, will help to improve interaction with the brand and encourage more end users to go into our retailers asking for Woodpecker,’ says Kellie Collins, Woodpecker marketing manager. The show also saw the launch of the latest catalogue, redesigned to inspire consumers along their buying journey. It can be downloaded from the company’s website. New imagery helps to tell the story around the theme of remembering walks in lovely locations, while contemporary roomsets reflect these places in their found and decorative objects. Collection names have also been adapted to fit with the new brand, taking inspiration from naturally beautiful British beaches and woodland spots such as Salcombe, Barafundle and Wembury. Along with an overhaul of the brand’s look and feel, Woodpecker also launched a variety of floors and features. ‘Inspired by the sumptuous beach and placid waters of

Devon’s estuary, the new Salcombe collection brings invigorating white, grey and ashen-brown shades to the engineered wood range. Boards feature slow-grow oak with wide grain patterns and are beautifully presented in a brushed and matt lacquered finish,’ says Collins. An assortment of contemporary and rustic colours were added to the Wembury laminate collection. These include three wide designs capturing the effect of seamless planks with continuous grain patterns. Easiloc fitting is used for all the new floors, simplifying installation and making for even sturdier floor joints. Shirley Jackson, Penthouse production director, presents Ian Brooks with champagne to mark his long service
Family man A key member of the Penthouse team is celebrating 25 years at the company Penthouse Carpets introduced the Essential Collection of four manmade ranges, offering a choice of contemporary styles and colours. It is bleach cleanable and comes with 10-year stain and wear warranties. Glamour, Performance and Elation are available in 4m and 5m widths while Intuition is available in 4m. Ian Brooks, Penthouse night shift supervisor, is celebrating his 25-year anniversary with the company. He marked the occasion by pressing the button on the company’s latest investment at its Rochdale, Lancashire factory: a high speed CMC tufting machine. Brooks has worked his way up from machine operator to his current role, and is responsible for the whole tufting department, together with warehousing and despatch. During that time he has gained a wealth of invaluable experience in manufacturing the wool blend carpets Penthouse Carpets is known for. Initially he worked the night shift because it let him spend more time with his family: the 9pm to 7.30am shifts meant he was able to see more of his children than if he worked a conventional daytime shift. But with his family now grown up, the camaraderie of his team means that he still works these hours.

‘Over the years I’ve seen many changes at Penthouse, as soft furnishing fashions have changed and trading conditions have ebbed and flowed but the company has continued to take advantage of technological developments in the industry by investing in new machinery, as this latest purchase demonstrates,’ he says. Brooks attributes his long service with Penthouse Carpets to working with a tight-knit team of great people. ‘The fact that the company is owned by its employees makes all the difference to the level of dedication to producing beautiful carpets and offering great service to customers, while enjoying being part of the Penthouse “family”,’ he adds.
