EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Transformation Victoria’s £50m push into the ceramic market really is transformational for the group after five years of deal making On 3 October 2012 Geoff Wilding became executive chairman of Victoria. Fast forward almost exactly five years and here is the now much expanded group splashing out £50m to enter the ceramic flooring market with the purchase of Italian producer Serra. This brings the group’s acquisition spending to at least £235m (Millennium Weavers was never made public nor were the conditional payments on the Westex deal). The latest deal sees the group enter a market that accounts for 62% of global flooring sales and 30% of European flooring sales (even if it is much lower in the UK). Victoria clearly fancies a large slice of it, saying it has already lined up other targets in the market and that ‘these additional acquisitions will provide significant

opportunity for a number of commercial, operational and financial synergies.’ The deal will see Victoria well on its way to becoming a truly international player, with almost 40% of its profits coming from overseas. Shareholders reacted with glee to the news, pushing shares up 8% to 751.5p, valuing it at £638.64m. The latest broker’s target share price, set after the Serra deal, is 800p. Since 3 October 2012, the group’s share price has risen more than 74-fold. Since the end of July DFS has seen orders drop while ScS’s order book is 3% fuller than last year. With differing fortunes we can now only use them as general indicators of overall market performance rather than bellwethers (although DFS’s market share is more than two and a half times that of its rival). Richard Renouf reminds us that it is the 25th anniversary of Qualitas, that is now known as The Furniture Ombudsman. The number of consumer complaints about the furniture and flooring sector has thankfully dropped from those turbulent days. Sadly, sometimes companies still get the simplest things wrong, like missing shelves and doors from orders for no apparent reason.

Victoria makes £50m move into ceramic sector Victoria has returned to the acquisition trail with a £50m purchase of Italian ceramic flooring manufacturer Ceramiche Serra, and indicated it intends to make further buys in the sector. The company is paying £32.6m upfront with the balance payable over four years, depending on Serra reaching profit targets. Serra management has agreed to remain at the company for at least four years. Last year Serra made EBITDA of £9.4m from sales of £25.2m. ‘Serra is a very important acquisition for us and one which reinforces our strategy of targeting earnings enhancing acquisitions to expand our business, in addition to our focus on organic growth,’ said Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman. ‘It will make an immediate positive contribution to Victoria’s performance whilst diversifying our market exposure. ‘Post-completion, nearly 40% of Victoria’s earnings will come from outside the UK, continuing our transformation into a genuinely international flooring business,’ he said. Wilding said acquiring Serra continued Victoria’s successful strategy of growing its business with earnings-enhancing acquisitions, and using scale and the group’s industry expertise to drive further increases in profits via cost savings and revenue growth. ‘Serra is an excellent strategic acquisition in line with the group’s stated intention to further develop its hard flooring business,’ he said. Serra does not currently sell into the UK, so the acquisition creates an

Turnover up at Housing Units Investing in its distribution centre reduced Housing Units profitability in the past year but sales were up. The Failsworth, Manchester retailer expanded its Oldham distribution centre as the first phase of a five-year expansion plan which enabled it to carry more stock for immediate delivery, improve efficiencies and support growing store and online sales. The second phase will see the store expanded. Turnover rose by 4.1% to £25.52m in the year to 26 March. Pre-tax profits dropped from £1.938m to £1.167m. Cash increased by £19,000 to £1.66m. The company maintained its dividend of £1.5m.

opportunity to introduce its products here. Wilding explained that ceramics is the largest flooring sector in the world with 62% of the 12.5bn square metres of flooring sold globally each year, and 30% of all the flooring sold in Europe, being ceramic. ‘There is significant opportunity for further acquisition-driven growth and we have already identified a number of suitable targets,’ he said. ‘These additional acquisitions will provide significant opportunity for a number of commercial, operational and financial synergies, which are expected to create further value for Victoria’s shareholders – just as it has done successfully in the carpet sector. ‘Serra has invested in productivityenhancing technology, resulting in fewer than 61 employees producing 10.5m square metres of ceramic flooring per annum,’ added Wilding.

Home sales at John Lewis have fallen for four consecutive weeks. Sales in the week to 30 September dropped by 5.1%, by 2.5% in the week to 7 October, by 2% in the week to 14 October and 6.6% in the week to 21 October. Highlights included a 13.9% rise in fitted furniture in the third week and a 5% rise in lighting sales in the fourth week. Home sales for the 12 weeks to 21 October were down 1% with total sales 2.1% higher.

Upholstery chains see contrasting performances Two of the country’s largest upholstery retailers have encountered mixed fortunes since August, with ScS lifting orders while for DFS they fell. For ScS pre-tax profits rose by 9.9% to £12m in the year to 29 July. Turnover increased by 4.9% to £330m. Sales densities were up by 3.2% to £226 per sqft. Average furniture orders increased by 1.1% to £1,575 and flooring by 3.5% to £629. Furniture sales rose 3.7% to £270.9m; flooring sales increased 5% to £39.9m; House of Fraser sales rose 8.3% to £27.4m and online sales lifted 12.3% to £11.3m. The chain said its website helped improve the quality of footfall, with customers having already researched their choices. Despite decreases in footfall this meant customers were ‘more engaged and more likely to place an order.’ Like for like orders were 3% higher in the nine weeks to 30 September. It was a different story at DFS where pre-tax profits fell by 22.3% to £50.1m in the year to 29 July. Sales rose by 0.9% to £762.7m, although the growth was driven by Sofa Workshop and Dwell as DFS sales dipped 0.6%. French Connection, Country Living and House Beautiful branded ranges increased sales by a fifth. The chain says it has achieved its long-term target to gain a 25% share of the ‘aspirational consumer’ market a year ahead of plan, without diminishing its appeal to customers traditionally most focused on value. Dwell saw 15 stores opened within DFS branches, doubling the chain and helping sales jump by 36% to £40m.

DFS saw partnership brand sales rise by 20%

The cost of this saw an EBITDA profit of £300,00 become a loss of £1.7m. A further 16 stores are planned. Sofa Workshop achieved double-digit percentage sales growth and ‘solid profitability’. Replacing standalone branches in Exeter and Edinburgh with outlets within DFS ‘achieved pleasing results’ and a further five co-locations are planned for the current year, bringing the estate to 25. Ian Filby, DFS ceo warned: ‘The UK furniture market continues to be very challenging and the outlook for the sector remains uncertain. Since early July our order intake has however been satisfactory, seeing a limited decline in year on year like for like order intake that we believe is consistent with the overall furniture retail market and is within the range of our expectations for the full year.’

Management changes at DFS DFS has boosted the management of its contract operations while creating a major new retail role. The furniture chain has recruited Nick Smith from Dixons Carphone to become retail director. He had the same role at the electricals chain where he worked for 30 years. He joined on 30 October and will report to Tim Stacey, DFS chief operating officer, and will be responsible for DFS’s future retail strategy. A company source said the chain was ‘delighted Nick is joining the team. He has an excellent retail expertise having played critical roles in leading fast-paced complex growth, including acquisitions, integration of brands and led a significant store transformation programme to improve customer

10

experience and drive sales growth.’ Andy Vaughan-Jones, DFS buying director, has moved to the contract side of the business in the new position of commercial integration director, described as ‘a critical role over the next few years in helping to realise the commercial opportunities that come from the expansion of the group.’ His previous responsibilities will be shared by Jean Brixey, merchandising director, and Karl Thomas, who has joined from Boots as director of group sourcing and procurement. Ashleigh Ellis and Sarah Humphreys have been promoted to senior buyers; John Rastall has joined from Argos to succeed Ben Braddock as head of extended range.

Taking the chair: Danish furniture manufacturer Carl Hansen & Son has added to its portfolio of Danish design with the acquisition of Soborg Mobler. The move adds renowned designers such as Borge Mogensen – one of the major contributors to the Golden Age of Danish design – Knud Holscher, Flemming Hvidt, and Christian Hvidt to its growing circle of designers. Included in the deal is Mogensen’s King of Diamonds chair (pictured) from 1944.

One of the big Associated Weavers flagship products, StainAway is the obvious choice for people who suffer from messy children, messy pets or any other grubby activities around the house. Profit warning at Carpetright Wilf Walsh, Carpetright chief executive, has warned that first half profits will be lower than 2016 after ‘volatile’ trading. UK like for like sales rose by 0.8% in the 25 weeks to 21 October, with a 2.1% increase in flooring offset by reduced bed sales as it rearranged its offer. ‘While trading conditions in the UK remained volatile over the first half, the increase in like for like sales in our core flooring category is pleasing given the increased level of competition,’ said Walsh. ‘Whilst we expect the group first half profit to be below that of the

prior year [£4.1m pre-tax], we are pleased with the improvement in sales in the rest of Europe and beds in the UK over the past few weeks. When these are combined with continued progress in our core flooring category we expect a significantly stronger second half with full year profit within the current range of market expectations [£13.8m to £16.7m],’ he said. A further 21 stores were converted to the new brand identity, with more than half its 419 stores now refurbished. These continue to deliver sales growth above comparable stores in the rest of the estate.

Carpetright sales have been ‘volatile’

Walton win North West of England chain Walton Flooring Centre was named Retailer of the Year at the Merseyside Independent Business Awards. The company was founded in Walton, Liverpool in 2011 and now has five stores around Liverpool, Southport and on the Wirral. James Harper, WFC md, plans to open another seven branches in the next 18 months. ‘The majority of our customers return to us, bringing friends and family with them. We have grown as a company under our own steam, without any external funding or investment. We aim to stay independent,’ added Harper, who was shortlisted for the Business Person of the Year award.

Profits drop Flooring distributor Westco saw profits fall in the previous financial year after sales dropped by 7%. Sales fell by £991,000 to £14.025m in the year to 31 January. Pre-tax profits dropped from £842,000 to £809,000. ‘During the year under review market conditions remained challenging with the impact of fragile consumer confidence and the foreign exchange uncertainties. Despite the background and a drop in activity, profitability has continued. The year-end financial position is considered satisfactory,’ said the company’s strategic report in the accounts.

Rapid sales rise for fast expanding Tapi Flooring chain Tapi’s sales increased almost tenfold last year as a faster than anticipated expansion boosted sales. The company saw sales break through the £30m barrier last year, recently filed accounts reveal. In the year to 31 December 2016, sales jumped from £3.28m to £30.29m as it expanded from 27 stores to 67. Gross margin rose from 42% to 56% as sales volumes increased. Pre-tax losses increased from £4.5m to £10.19m. ‘The primary focus of the company at this stage of its evolution is to continue

14

Interiors Monthly November 2017

the aggressive store opening programme. The nature of this robust long-term plan fully anticipates accounting losses in the early years of trading but a quick transition to growing profits thereafter,’ said the company’s strategic report in the accounts. At the beginning of the period the company was trading from 27 stores and by the end of the financial year was trading from a total of 67 stores, supported by a fleet of 34 mobile showrooms and an informational website. A further 17 stores have been opened

since the year-end and the directors expect to open another nine during 2017 making a total of 93. During the period, the company issued further ordinary shares of £1, raising funds of £15.6m to continue development. The report said: ‘The company has gained the backing of various high profile shareholders that has enabled a rate of expansion that is at a faster pace than was originally planned. These shareholders have indicated a keenness to continue the rollout strategy and support the business in its future growth plans.’

SERVICE

Richard Renouf

Seeing the light The Furniture Ombudsman settles disputes It’s more than 25 years since the furniture and flooring industries were threatened with regulation by the Office of Fair Trading because their complaints were among the highest of any industry. The organisation that was set up as a response to this – Qualitas – has gained such credibility and respect that it is now The Furniture Ombudsman and has just celebrated its 25th birthday. I went to the British Furniture Manufacturers’ office in Harcourt Street, London on 5 May 1992. Qualitas didn’t actually exist then, it came into being formally on 24 June the same year. My brief was to set up the National Conciliation Service, starting with the left over cases from the National Association of Retailer Furnishers. We moved to the offices at the Furniture Industry Research Association in Stevenage after a couple of years. In more recent years the organisation gained Ombudsman status and full independence. In the early days the Office of Fair

Trading would not accredit the organisation. But then it became known that it was citing Qualitas as a model to other industries, showing that retailers, manufacturers and others in the supply chain can work together to bring down the level of complaints and inspire customer confidence. The National Conciliation Service was separately managed to ensure its impartiality. Dealing with complaints doesn’t seem a likely route for success, but it shows that there were and still are customers being mis-served by furniture and flooring companies, and that there are customers with unreasonable expectations. Dealing with negatives and conflict every day can be demoralising. You easily forget how many more customers there

are who have great service and are delighted with what they’ve bought. Just occasionally a ‘thank you’ will come in to brighten your day, but it’s rare. I said this to a wise friend a few years ago. I was going through a difficult period, feeling that as an independent consultant I was just spending my time being critical. ‘Think of it as bringing light into a situation,’ he said. ‘You are able to help others see what they can’t or won’t see.’ ‘But what about those who disagree with my findings?’ I replied. ‘If you’ve revealed the truth, you are not responsible for people’s reactions.’ His words put things back into perspective. Helping people to understand what’s right by applying expertise and a bit of common sense is a great service. Court fees have increased dramatically in the past few years. It seems as if the Court Service is trying to be self-funding, so costs could increase more. This will make alternative dispute resolution schemes more cost-effective than ever. The critics who reckoned you couldn’t have an independent conciliation service funded by the industry went quiet long ago. Those who thought it wouldn’t be commercial simply to deal with complaints, likewise. Congratulations to all those who’ve worked over the years to make The Furniture Ombudsman what it is 25 years on. The OFT disappeared years ago. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

Shared passion Eoos has designed a larger version of its Tadeo table for its 2017 Walter Knoll collection

Eoos has designed furniture for Walter Knoll for 20 years

Gernot Bohmann, Martin Bergmann and Harald Gründl formed Eoos

Interiors Monthly November 2017

Austrian designers Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl founded Eoos in 1995 after studying at the College of Applied Art in Vienna. They ‘love the strange, the paradoxical and the spontaneous’, and have developed a unique methodology. In 1997 they met Markus Benz, the then new ceo of Walter Knoll. He commissioned them to design the Jason sofa which proved so popular they have worked together ever since. ‘The Jason sofa can be transformed into a daybed with a hidden mechanism, and it looks as good as a sofa as when it is a daybed. We designed it so that anyone transforming it from sofa to daybed will always look elegant– this is a constant in our work,’ explains Bergmann. ‘The thin, curved backrest allows the user to relax. This element allowed us to create a whole family around it – it’s become the most successful family of products Walter Knoll has ever produced.’

Since the collaboration, Eoos has designed around 70 products for the German manufacturer. Leadchair designed by Eoos in 2012 became another bestseller and was the result of five years of research and development. The designers and the brand have continued to evolve their successful partnership for many years. To celebrate 20 years of collaboration, Eoos has designed a collection for Walter Knoll this year that reflects shifts in taste and lifestyle. ‘The new Tama Living sofa is about asymmetry and symmetry at the same time,’ says Bohmann. ‘The seat elements are divided by service elements, creating big islands that allow users to sit together or “together alone” on their individual island. We used saddle leather for the sliding tray and the integral sidetable/ armrest as it’s a strong part of the brand’s DNA – Walter Knoll started out as a leather shop in Stuttgart. ‘The first piece of saddle leather in the Walter Knoll catalogue was our Cuoio chair. By making some slots and closing them in the middle, the former flat piece became a sculptural three-dimensional object with ergonomic qualities. ‚‚‚

DESIGN TREND

Bring a chic, retro vibe into your room with this offbeat and playful trend. We’ve coined this ‘Geo Pop’ as it signifies a fusion of patterns with daring pop culture of today.

Taking inspiration from Camille Walala style of presenting signature boundless

The classic 80’s Memphis trend was known for being bold in style, full of confidence so whilst and packed with primary colours not for the faint hearted its impact can make a fantastic addition and talking point in any home.

energy in show-stopping spaces, it also draws influences from the Memphis and Bauhaus design movements. The main thing with this look is that it is fun! Geometrics have been popular for a while now but adding textures and colours to give your room a modern them too can and cosy feel. Street art and abstract images and shapes work well as statement pieces or use a feature wall in a linear print. Break the rules by exposing raw surfaces and then warm them up with textures or prints in contrasting colours. Experiment with bold colour blocking of pinks, blues or contrast with black aquas and & whites. Geometric motifs and silhouettes can clash with bright colours and pull it all together as a scheme. Quirky or period accessories can add interest and catch the eye too.

Whilst you may a more want to choose timeless carpet there is no reason that this your base to build the theme can’t be around. A usually conservative stripe like our Pure Living Retro Cord looks great against the bright splashes of colour and eye-popping patterns or our Bell Twist plain carpets can help to tone down bold or brash accents, making a scheme more inviting.

UPHOLSTERY Then we experimented a lot with this material, because we love its stability and sculptural potential. For the Isanka series the whole shape was generated by only one triangle cut,’ explains Bohmann. The new collection also includes a range of side tables that experiment with structure and geometry. ‘We call them mathematical ornaments. For us it is very interesting to observe how much emotional quality comes from rationality,’ explains Gründl. ‘The stone and brass in the Joco and Joco Stone tables give them enormous depth, and the aluminium plate of Oki has slots that represent the structure below.’ A larger version of Eoos’ Tadeo table also makes its debut, adding an element of grandeur to family gatherings and celebrations or work meetings. So what’s the secret to a successful 20 year collaboration? Bohmann explains: ‘We are both looking for authentic objects. Our advantage is that we take the momentum of past projects into the future and never act from a standstill. Alongside evolution, the basis of our successful partnership is our shared passion, communication and an in-depth understanding of each other – that repeatedly gets us on to new tracks.’ Visit: www.walterknoll.de www.eoos.com Top right: Tama Living’s seat elements are divided Left: The Leadchair Executive, one of Walter Knoll’s most successful products, was designed by Eoos Right: Jason was the first design by Eoos for Walter Knoll

Say to the first truly hybrid mattress. We all know a great mattress is key to a great night’s sleep. That’s why some have memory foam, for pressure relief. Some have pocket springs, for support. Some have micro coils, for comfort. And some have natural fillings to wick away moisture. That’s when we got thinking. If each of those is comfy on its own, what happens if we put them all together? Introducing hybed. Mattresses that take all the best technology out there, and put it into one. The ultimate in materials, to create the ultimate in comfort. Say hy to hybed, the hybrid mattress.

Light show Flou’s Amal coordinates bed and lighting Flou’s Amal bed is the epitome of the company’s style for a bed that makes a statement. Designed by Carlo Colombo, the special features are the metal trims that anchor the covers of the headboard, in almost complete contrast to the softness of the bed. There are three finishes – polished gold, opaque burnished, polished black nickel – allowing the trim to match the covers. The base is padded and, like the headboard, has removable covers in fabric, leather or ecological leather. Bases come with a mattress support of adjustable slats, a space-saving storage compartment or the Motion4 adjustable base. The bed is in four sizes: 160cm x 200cm, 170cm x 200cm, 180cm x 200cm, 200cm x 200cm and an additional version with a length of 210cm. An elegant addition to any room is the matching lamp, even when switched off. A standard LED lamp expresses its personality through the hide diffuser, thanks to the hand-crafted curved shape. The diffuser is available in a range of colours: natural, mocha, Bulgarian red, tobacco yellow, sand yellow, mud brown, nut brown and dove grey. The lamp is available in the same finishes as the bed trims. Visit: www.flou.it

BEDS AND BEDROOM Wigan Warriors players have been helped by sleeping on Sealy beds including Hybrid Fusion

Active service Sealy says a good night’s sleep can benefit recovery from injury and also aid those with an active lifestyle Madison

Sleep is important, especially for those who lead a particularly active lifestyle: something Sealy has discovered through its partnership with rugby league club Wigan Warriors. Since the partnership with the Super League champions earlier this year, several key players have suffered a variety of debilitating injuries. As a result of this, the squad has been educated in the importance of a good night’s sleep. To aid recovery, the players now have their sleep monitored in a number of different ways as part of their highperformance programme. While the majority of people won’t be training in the extreme, it can be

helpful to know what mattresses to recommend to those who lead an active lifestyle. Sealy showcases various supportive and slumber-inducing ingredients, essential for encouraging a restful sleep. l Geltex helps to distribute weight more evenly and as a result, prevents impact on pressure points. This has the added bonus of providing full body support and spinal alignment; l Memory foam moulds to the shape of the body, providing the correct underlying support for each individual; l Innergetic latex has the ability to The squad know the importance of rest and recovery

instantly recover its shape: providing comfort and support, even with continual movement; l Various spring systems conform to the shape of the sleepers’ body, taking into consideration different weight distributions. On a mission to bring restful recovery to Sealy customers, the brand has focused on assisting Wigan Warriors’ players John Bateman and Sam Tomkins, who have both suffered critical injuries this season. Having missed the first half of the season due to a shoulder injury

during the World Club Challenge game against Cronulla Sharks in February, Bateman’s road to recovery has been long and painful, with rest playing a key part. Similarly, Tomkins has endured several months of recovery, which has included rehabilitation, weight sessions, endurance training and plenty of good quality sleep. Since completing their recuperation journey, both players are now back on the field. Bateman was named man of the match and Tomkins scored the winning field goal in a pivotal match against rivals, Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup quarter final in June. Both players credit their comeback to a combination of physio sessions, conditioning and continued support from Sealy. ‘A good night’s sleep is just as essential to your health as exercise and nutrition,’ says Holly Housby, Sealy brand marketing manager. ‘The quality of our sleep directly affects the quality of our performance – including mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, energy, and even our weight. No other activity delivers so many benefits with so little effort,’ she adds. Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Anniversary launches Shire celebrated its two decades of manufacturing The Shire Bed Company launched two collections to celebrate 20 years in business. The Anniversary Active collection is the result of feedback from elite Yorkshire sports people, coaches and physios. It offers the kind of rest and recovery benefits vital to those in top level sports. After months of research and trials with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos, which involved a survey of players and input from team physios and coaches, the three-mattress range comprises Active Anniversary, Active Jubilee and Active Triumph. ‘Restful sleep plays a vital part in the lifestyle of professional sports players. Following our work with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos, we wanted to bring the level of sophistication needed to achieve that into a professional range of mattresses for anyone wanting a good night’s sleep,’

46

says Fara Butt, Shire marketing director. ‘It reinforced the fact that support is critical to elite athletes as it helps aid recovery. This is reflected in our Anniversary collection through the high level of support that our mattresses offer. It also highlighted the need to maximise the sleeping surface, which we’ve done by encapsulating the mattress.’ The Celebration collection of mattresses comprises Festive, Gala, Revel and Merrim. ‘This is a very special year for us and we wanted to mark it with a collection that demonstrates just how far we have come in the past 20 years. The new Active Response collection is a culmination of the skills, technology and forward thinking processes that have made the company what it is today,’ she explains. Shire also revealed its first venture into bedding accessories with four

pillows targeting specific needs. Elegance Combi, a 300 thread count jacquard cotton cover with a high density memory foam insert, offers personalised comfort and support to sensitive areas; Memory Lux Combi is a traditional shaped memory foam pillow that helps to reduce tossing and turning, leading to a better night’s sleep; Therma Response comes with a fabric that adjusts to the body’s changing temperature and a filling that offers upper-body support; and Support Plus is for people who need neck support but want the softness of microfibre. The company also introduced Glitz, a collection of velvet headboards and bases. The bases have soft closing drawers with a range of headboard styles to match. Collaboration and innovation For Mammoth, the show was all about growth Mammoth will be sold in 15 new stores

‘The 2017 Bed Show was a great success for everyone involved with Mammoth,’ says Kris Wood, Mammoth head of marketing. ‘Our products will be on sale in 15 new stores and we’ve seen growth within our existing markets too. The most exciting of the tasters unveiled at the show this year was the nearfield technology which will be used in all Mammoth mattresses manufactured after March 2018,’ he says. ‘Using the latest mobile technology, we launched a new solution at the show which enables customers to instantly warranty their products with a swipe of their phone. No mobile apps are required and the data gathered helps us better understand and meet the needs of our customers. We are always working to improve all aspects of engagement with our brand and product performance. We are working with leading research institutions to create comfort

technologies and our current work includes development of new bed components, materials engineering and experiential innovations,’ says Paul Sutherland, Mammoth director of innovation. In addition to the nearfield technology, and as a direct result of this year’s show, Mammoth will be working with a number of major retailers to collaborate on new products and services along with innovations in software and technology, which will be exclusive to their stores. ’Our two special guests, Dr Jonny Bloomfield, Mammoth chief scientific officer, and three-time Olympic Gold medallist rower, Pete Reed, kept our visitors enthralled with their knowledge and experiences of our products, while our new technology innovations were just a taste of what is to come for Mammoth in the coming months,’ says Wood.

Reed told visitors how sleeping on a Mammoth mattress has enabled him to bounce back from potentially careerthreatening surgery to climb back into a boat again. He described his relationship with Mammoth as more like a friendship – Mammoth looks out for him and helps him when he needs it. He is a keen advocate of a Mammoth mattress, attributing a great deal of his rest, recovery and performance successes to the sleep and rest he’s achieved as a result of sleeping on a Mammoth mattress. Reed also spoke about the importance of a good mattress for younger rowers, believing that he made the link between a good mattress and improved rest and recovery very late and believes his findings could benefit younger rowers even more than they’ve helped him. Mayfair models have between 3,000 and 13,000 springs

The right direction Gainsborough revealed the results of its brand review It has been a busy year for Gainsborough. Since last year’s Bed Show Nick Gigg became md and undertook a review of the brand. This encompassed everything from research and development through to sales and marketing. Gainsborough now has a dedicated development team with a brief to bring new ideas to market, not just in product and fabric selection, but also new techniques. The fruits of that year long exercise were clearly in evidence at this year’s show, with major launches in both beds and sofabeds. Leading the charge for beds was the Mayfair collection of high count pocket sprung mattresses ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 individual springs. To showcase these to best effect contemporary box sprung bases and a boutique style

52

headboard range were launched. The Lux collection of mattresses ranging from 1,200 to 5,000 pocket springs is available for online retailers to deliver through Gainsborough’s next day home delivered network. On the sofabed side, Deco’s sleek looks somewhat disguised the fact that it is a sofabed. The other four models all offered unique features not seen on a Gainsborough sofabed before. Studio and Uno featured a smart fixed back option, and the Coco encompasses a new easy to use folding bed mechanism. Compact is an ottoman that transforms into a double sofabed. Alongside the latest ranges was a new fabric collection including chenille and soft wool ranges available in a selection of colour options for both

the sofabed and divan ranges. ‘The Bed Show was the perfect opportunity to explain to customers old and new the brand direction for Gainsborough. The aim is to clearly establish the brand as experts in the production of both beds and upholstery. The marketing direction, as displayed through new point of sale, will highlight the key brand values of professionalism, attention to detail and the highest standards of design and innovation,’ says Gigg. ‘Our approach is simply to be the best in every area of our business. We will achieve this by providing the best customer service, designing and producing beautiful beds and sofabeds and being the best place to work for our team,’ he adds. Harrison Spinks introduced nine Hybed models

Luxury boost Harrison Spinks added two collections The Harrison Spinks team with the new collection of Hybed mattresses

Harrison Spinks enhanced its luxury mattress offering by launching two collections at the show. The Hybed collection is designed to offer consumers the ultimate in sleeping experiences by taking the ‘hybrid’ mattress concept to the next level. While a traditional hybrid mattress combines memory foam and springs, Harrison Spinks’ Hybed mattresses feature worldleading pocket spring technology, latex, memory foam and a 100% natural sleeping surface. The collection is made up of nine beds across three ranges – Super, Nature and Ultimate – providing a bed for all sleeping requirements. Some of the natural fibres featured across the collection, including wool, are produced on Harrison Spinks’ 300acre farm in Yorkshire. These mattress fillings are complemented by up to 14,000

54

individual pocket springs, which work both independently and in partnership with one another to offer elevated levels of support and comfort. ‘The launch of our new Hybed collection has been inspired by our continuous innovation, mission to become more vertically integrated and our goal to change the way the world sleeps through support, comfort and luxury,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md. The trade was offered an exclusive look at the collection at the Bed Show. ‘We spoke at length with a number of retailers at the show interested in this exciting new concept and the feedback was really positive,’ says Spinks. Launched alongside the Hybed collection was the adjustable sleep system from Harrison Spinks’ Somnus brand.

The sleep system can be adapted to suit different relaxing and sleeping positions. This is thanks to two recliner mattress options, allowing consumers to create their own sleep sanctuary. Somnus also displayed its limited edition Royal Britannia mattress – created to celebrate 65 years since Somnus supplied the royal yacht with mattresses ahead of its maiden voyage. The Royal Britannia model features 10,000 Somnus Sensa Intelligent pocket springs, along with natural fillings, including Wensleydale Eco wool. The wool is sourced from Harrison Spinks’ flock of rare Wensleydale sheep. Visitors were also given the chance to take a tour of its Leeds-based factory and Yorkshire farm, thanks to the latest virtual reality technology on Harrison’s stand. Fusion opens as a double bed

Night and day Silentnight introduced upholstered bedframes and sofabeds Silentnight broke new ground when it introduced upholstered bedframes and sofabeds. The bedframes are made by upholstery company Whitemeadow and have height adjustable slatted bases. The two designs, Albany and Elliston, are joined by two coordinating chairs, a bench stool and storage bench. There is a choice of 12 fabric option and three foot finishes. It has partnered with sofa manufacturer QFC for the range of three sofabeds, including Fusion, a corner sofa that opens as a double bed. Both it and Connect, a more traditionally styled sofabed that opens as a double or kingsize bed, have Geltex on the sleeping surface, a mattress protector and cushions. Connect has a coordinating storage chair option. Richmond is a traditional pull-out sofabed (145cm x 190cm) with Geltex in the integrated mattress, cushions and an adjustable headrest. There are six fabric options and two cushion designs. The Signature collection has been

MIFF Kuala Lumpur 8-11 March 2018

EXHIBITION GUIDE

More than 600 exhibitors are expected at the expanded show

Making it big Next year’s show will be 25% larger

The largest ever edition of the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) from 8-11 March 2018, is shaping up to be an even more exciting must-attend event for global furniture buyers. Its 24th edition at Putra World Trade Centre and new co-venue, Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) is expanding by 25% to 100,000sqm from last year, with the number of exhibitors set to be more than 600. Major exhibitors have taken larger stands to upgrade their displays with more variety and new products. Covering an extensive range of home and office solutions as well as Malaysia’s renowned wood furniture, MIFF 2018 consists of Malaysian and foreign exhibitors including new companies and Malaysian big names such as Poh Huat Furniture, Lii Hen, Merryfair, Eurochairs and Wegmans. The focus on design to drive business growth sees new features such as designRena with 15,000sqm for 50 top Malaysian manufacturers, the return of MIFF Office following its successful run as the largest office solutions in South East

Asia last year and the new MIFF Timber Mart to connect manufacturers with global timber suppliers. Buyers can expect more unique exhibits and minimalist European design, in particular Scandinavian style furniture that was popular at the 2017 show. ‘We foresee modern classic and Scandinavian trends will still be shining in 2018 with colours more focused on smoother and comfortable hues,’ says BK Aw, Deesse Furniture marketing executive. The company is considering adding Scandinavian designs and materials to its displays. Chua Yew Ting, Ivorie International marketing manager, says more consumers are looking for environmentfriendly furniture with natural colours and Scandinavian designs are a winner with new home owners and young people, also in part because of the affordable prices. The variety of exhibiting companies ranging from manufacturers, exporters, wholesalers and independent niche product suppliers will provide plenty of options for buyers.

Among the niche product exhibitors is Kedai Bikin, a local rising name with its line of Malaysian crafted furniture by local artisans and products ranging from furniture, light fittings and accessories. The Sofa Hall will be enlarged at its new home in MITEC to accommodate more exhibitors including SWS, Isella, Klotz and Fella Design. Almost 20,000 visitors from 132 countries attended the 2017 show and the organiser expects this to rise next year. The diverse international presence, including one in four buyers coming from a neighbouring Asean country, bolsters MIFF’s position as a gateway to capture business opportunities in South East Asia and other emerging markets including South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. Importers, exporters and wholesalers make up over half of the trade visitors to MIFF. Buyer registration is now open online where visitors can sign up to gain free access to the show, the international buyers lounge, buyers’ night gala and hotel and airport transfer rates. reveal how urban life is likely to impact the worlds of living and working in the future. The Future is Urban, the 2018 Heimtextil Trendbook, highlights four key predictions for future interior design: The Flexible Space; The Healthy Space; The Re-Made Space; and The Maker Space. Visit: www.heimtextil.messefrankfurt.com

The Healthy Space

We’ve known the far-reaching effect that the spaces in which we live, work, learn and relax can have on our well-being. Designers, architects and materials scientists are increasingly searching for innovative design that promotes our levels of health, satisfaction, attentiveness and productivity. From the integration of plants indoors to new directions in wellness, the healthy space is on the rise.

The Re-Made Space

The maker movement triggers a revolution in the manufacture of interior design objects. It has the potential to fundamentally change production, particularly thanks to the democratisation of digital manufacturing technology. DIY instructions, open source and downloadable designs make it possible for everyone to develop their own personalised products wherever they might be.

Another phenomenon of urbanisation is the rapid generation of waste. For the first time, the amount of waste produced in cities is growing faster than urbanisation itself. To conquer this cities must understand that the future is to put waste on an equal footing with resources. This will make waste a starting point for new design.

imm cologne Germany 15-21 January 2018

EXHIBITION GUIDE

More than 1,200 exhibitors are expected

Rhine shines Bookings are up It seems that imm cologne will herald a glorious year for furniture in 2018, because the amount of exhibition space that has already been booked has exceeded all of the Cologne trade fair organiser’s expectations. Compared with the same period of the previous year (2016), the show has seen double-digit growth overall in both exhibitors and stand space. This positive development is driven by a double-digit percentage increase in registrations from abroad. In total over 1,200 exhibitors are expected, some 70% of which will be travelling from overseas. In addition to the large number of returning exhibitors, a marked increase in interest from exhibitors from East and South East Europe has been observed, particularly from Poland, Greece and Turkey. Furniture companies from South Europe also value the market in Germany – a double-digit increase in exhibitors from Italy, Spain and Portugal has likewise been reported. Also more

and more exhibitors from the USA are happy to make the long journey to the Rhine. For trade visitors this development means an even greater choice and variety of products and suppliers from the international interiors sector. In Koelnmesse’s 11 halls, they can not only find out about the latest interior design trends and global product innovations, but also buy easily. ‘The measures that we have steadily driven forward over the last few years are now also increasingly taking effect – with the result that imm cologne is not only an attractive business platform, but that the event is also giving rise to new ideas and trends in the long term. Put simply, imm cologne is a pleasure,’ says Arne Petersen, Koelnmesse vice president trade fair management. For the seventh year running, the show has invited an international designer to use architecture, interior design and furniture in a simulated house in order to make a personal statement about

contemporary living. Das Haus – Interiors will be located in Hall 2.2 of the Pure segment and will be built and fitted out in accordance with the ideas of Czech designer Lucie Koldova. ‘We are turning our attention to the Czech Republic – the home of superb glassware,’ says Dick Spierenburg, imm cologne creative director. ‘We were particularly impressed with her lamp designs. They reveal an ideal combination of materials like wood, brass and copper with the lustrous quality of glass that has been blown to the limits of what is technically possible – they are remarkable. ‘In 2018, we are focusing on the subject of light and emphasising its importance as a creative design element. With this in mind, we also want to let Das Haus shine in a special light – in the truest sense. And, as a highly talented designer of lighting products, Lucie Koldova is the perfect person to do this,’ adds Spierenburg. Visit: www.imm-cologne.com

Popular UK companies including Art of the Loom and Abraham Moon also make a return with new colours and designs. A record number of visitors this year proved the importance of the fixture to UK fabric selectors and it has become a must attend event for upholstery and soft furnishing manufacturers – both BFM and non-BFM members. Visitors to the show in 2018 will benefit from the £1.5m Chelsea FC has spent on improving and updating the

football ground’s West Stand. A new reception area, new lighting, flooring, decoration and fixtures have made the exhibition space brighter, smarter and more comfortable for visitors and exhibitors. On show will be traditional and contemporary jacquards, plain and patterned velvets, modern tartans and bright cottons and linens in florals, stripes and abstracts, giving buyers plenty of choice in both texture and design. Shown alongside will be a large selection of the latest flame retardancy treatments and backing fabrics. Registration for the 2018 show is now open and full exhibitor and visiting information can be seen on the show website. Visit: www.londonfabricshow.uk

Ambiente Frankfurt 9-13 February 2018

EXHIBITION GUIDE

Global trends Themed worlds are described at Ambiente The global consumer goods industry will meet in Frankfurt from 9-13 February. Ambiente is a trend barometer and design platform in three product and service groups: dining, living and giving. It covers the entire range of consumer goods for the dining room, kitchen, household goods, luxury goods as well as living, giving and interior decorating. The Netherlands will be the Partner Country in 2018 with Dutch designer Robert Bronwasser curating and designing the presentation in Galleria 1. Bronwasser is an industrial designer who passionately merges creative skills, common sense and 25 years’ experience into useful designs with a one-off look. Visitors will not want to miss the 2018 Trends. Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano has scoured the international fashion, design, art and architecture scenes for new trends. These are displayed in four themed worlds of selected exhibitors’ products: Modest Regenerations; Colourful Intentions; Technological Emotions; and Opulent Narrations. Accompanying lectures will provide further pointers. Visit: www.ambiente.messefrankfurt.com

Modest Regenerations: Combining industrial chic with country house charm. Durable materials such as bamboo, cast iron and concrete become more attractive with age.

Colourful Intentions: Bold colours and patterns mean these products really make a place. Ethical considerations behind the scenes influence the choice and processing of materials, including recycled plastic, wood and textiles.

Technological Emotions: The visionary approach experiments with new technologies to augment our wellbeing. The focus is on fusions: perhaps paper with linen, or metal with glass.

Opulent Narrations: Individual, picturesque designs are daringly presented with a dash of eccentricity and magnificent details. Opulent materials including precious stones and porcelain characterise this look.

EXHIBITION GUIDE

A must for anyone in the bed industry The annual showcase for the bed industry will return to the Telford International Centre on 18-19 September 2018, to celebrate the very best in beds. Organised by the National Bed Federation, it is the must attend event for anyone in the industry with an unprecedented gathering of UK bed manufacturers and suppliers under one roof. ‘The show remains successful because it is specifically targeted to bed buyers and specifiers,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. ‘Each year the exhibition plays host to some of the biggest and best bed brands – many of whom don’t exhibit anywhere else. We have all the major key buyers attending –

This year’s show had more than 1,500 visitors with 15% revisiting on the second day

from the top department stores and big multiples to the realm of successful independents up and down the country – because they can do all their “bed shopping” in one place.’ Only NBF members will be invited to exhibit and since the introduction of the independently audited Code of Practice,

buyers can order with confidence knowing all the exhibitors are meeting their legal obligations. This year’s event attracted more than 1,500 visitors over two days with 80-plus brands exhibiting the latest products, developments and innovations. Visit www.bedshow.co.uk

Tendence Frankfurt 30 June-3 July 2018

EXHIBITION GUIDE

There is a programme of events to complement the show

International gathering Nations come together to exhibit at Tendence Tendence is Germany’s most international home event in the second half of the year. Taking place in Frankfurt from 30 June to 3 July, the wide-ranging product portfolio covers home, furnishing, decorating, gifts, jewellery, fashion accessories, tableware, kitchenware, home textiles and outdoor living. Special shows and a wide ranging complementary programme of events are multi-faceted sources of salesboosting impulses for retailers. Strong brands and key communicators use this

new products platform to present their trends for the winter and Christmas season. At the same time, they give bulk buyers from the international trade the chance to place orders in good time for their spring and summer collections. At this year’s show there was no avoiding natural materials such as wood, willow, rattan and linen, particularly when combined with brass, copper, silver, gold and glass. The juxtaposition of opposites was a strong theme, with matte and textured materials and highly polished, natural

surfaces playing off against one another. Visitors saw a mix of designs that drew inspiration from nature, as well as used and ethnic looks. The targeted use of concrete, for example, lends definite contemporary perspectives. Inspiration was drawn from a variety of styles including Art Deco, the 1950s and Memphis. Powdery rose and mint tones dominated alongside a whole series of blues and greens while sunshine yellow provided summery accents. Visit: www.tendence.messefrankfurt.com

TRENDS

Neutral territories Dulux Trade unveils its Colour of the Year Dulux Trade has chosen Heart Wood, a warm neutral with a hint of heather, as its 2018 Colour of the Year. Every year, Dulux Trade’s parent company AkzoNobel brings together a panel of international experts from various disciplines of design to develop its ColourFutures trend forecast, now in its 15th year. The 2017 colour of the year Denim Drift proved to be the company’s third bestseller. For 2018, the mood is felt to be one of unpredictability and uncertainty. A world in which we don’t know what the news will bring every day; a world with more expectations and more demands on our time; a world of division, and a world where we have greater access to information and choices than before. The new Colour of the Year and its associated trends have been created to ensure daily environments can become places of calm; where the noise can be turned down and values can be nurtured. ‘The Heart Wood trend is inspired by the beautifully warm wooden materials we see being used in all kinds of interior decorating and architecture. A variety of woods are growing in popularity, but we

80

see a tendency towards warmer, light and dark shades of red, alongside violet and pinkish woods. The warmth of wood reflects the comfort that we need in these uncertain times,’ says Rebecca Williamson, Dulux Trade senior colour and design manager. ‘Since blue remains so fundamental, the colour collection flows beautifully from this year into next. The nourishing

‘The warmth of wood reflects the comfort that we need in these uncertain times’ warmth of wood and tactile comfort of leather add to this sense of harmony. The versatility of the palette provides the freedom to balance softer shades such as cocoa with the deeper, bolder tones of ink blue and purple. Combining these shades in such a way creates a calming backdrop, effectively transforming any space into an environment of comfort

and restfulness. It works marvellously as a subtle background decor yet is full of character and plays well with popular modern design details such as walnut, brushed brass, marble and matt-black surfaces,’ she says. The Comforting Space trend is about relaxed, grown-up luxury, with its heritage hints, warm-tone woods and use of natural materials. It creates rich, welcoming interiors with generously layered textures that offer a restorative embrace. The colours in this palette all have a muted quality, making them easy to combine. In the home it provides an

instant impression of luxury as well as a neutral base for those who want to personalise their surroundings. The Inviting Space colour collection has an easy-going style, bringing together neutrals, softer pastels framed by graphic borders of coal and dark blue. Encouraging a clear-headed approach to life, the palette supports a need for connection, making it well-suited to office spaces as well as healthcare environments. Proportions of coloured surfaces can be used to indicate the purpose of a room, or signal a transition to a different area. For instance, softer pastel shades may be framed by graphic borders to create an airy mood, yet enhance spatial awareness. The Playful Space palette draws Heart Wood into sunny and warm territory. Pops of fresh colour add a sense of fun and energy, including shades of green inspired by nature. The Playful home brings a sense of possibility to a space. Above all it’s about creating a place for drawing inspiration and creativity. Cheerful in tone, the palette is ideal for school buildings and the leisure industry. The mood-enhancing qualities of the palette lend themselves perfectly to the hospitality sector as well as education by creating a space that is invigorating and full of life. Clean and fresh hues combined with uplifting accent colours are essential in providing a stimulating atmosphere, while muted tones can ease tension and improve concentration. Triple success A trio of launches from Adam Carpets Adam Carpets made the most of the buzz of excitement at The Flooring Show with three major launches. The first was the confirmation of its collaboration with interior design paint company Little Greene. Using carpet samples and paint chips to great effect, it showed the 125 colours that make up the Castlemead and Fine Worcester ranges with three coordinating paint colours from Little Greene. Mounted on 6ft high boards, the effect was stunning and one of the main draws of the Wool Trend Centre in Hall C. Pure Brit Supreme was a new range on show. Capitalising on the success of Pure Brit, the weight has increased to 55oz and the pile deepened to achieve a wool Saxony effect without reducing performance. Supreme has already caught the imagination of retailers with better than expected sales. Flare was officially launched at the show. The zig-zag design is available in 10 on-trend colours and provided the carpet for the stand. It was displayed on a bespoke unit using large tubes to simulate rolls. ‘The show has been an amazing success for us,’ says Eamonn Prescott, Adam Carpets sales director. ‘Easily the best since we returned four years ago. The reaction to the new ranges and Little Greene gives us a lot of optimism for the year ahead.’ Visit: www.adamcarpets.com

Design on demand Digital printing increases scope for Balterio

Balterio showed off its two digitally printed laminate collections, Xpressions and the water-repellent Grande. Grande features extra-long (2,050mm) and extra-wide (167mm and 240mm) planks in 16 designs. Some are available in both widths that can be combined for an even more authentic look. A urethane lacquer finish gives the laminate a matte appearance as well as a soft and warm feel while the HydroShield technology makes all Grande floors highly waterrepellent. Xpressions stands out from the crowd. Offered are four designs in classic

herringbone, checked or contrasting geometric forms in 1,261mm x 190.5mm planks. Whereas traditional methods use a large cylinder that prints the design on to paper to be pressed on an HDF board afterwards, in digital printing an advanced inkjet printer is used to deposit the pattern directly on to the HDF-board. There is no actual contact with the planks, eliminating the transmission of small indentations on to the laminate. Designs are uploaded, creating the opportunity for collections on demand, subject to a minimum volume.

‘The creation of laminate collections on demand is Balterio’s strong suit. In this respect, the introduction of digital printing was a logical step toward making the brand future-proof,’ says Ruben Desmet, Unilin general manager laminate. ‘Balterio is known for its quality and flexibility. Thanks to digital printing, we can go further than ever before in the customisation of laminate floors. Clients can choose both the thickness and pattern of the planks – an unprecedented level of co-creation in the world of flooring,’ he adds. Visit: www.balterio.co.uk

Tempo’s cutting-edge designs and colours transform any interior ambiance and with industry leading wear warranties, it is suitable for both residential and commercial use. ‘The longer, wider planks create drama

Seating pretty Eye-catching chairs were the focus at Long Point, along with new fabrics

Interiors Monthly November 2017

Accent chairs were a big story at Long Point, with suppliers telling how appealing they can be to brighten up homes without going to the expense of a new sofa. Alexander & James’s Roxy twister chairs are available in any fabric but were displayed in jewel shades of velvet, including marmalade, turmeric and mallard. Its Eden collection is an eclectic range of mix and match furnishings based around the Gala Boheme design inspired by tribal art. The idea is to offer retailers a curated collection of patterns, colour and textures (including fringed, embossed and embroidered cushions) that they would find difficult to put together without a stylist. ‘We encourage retailers to mix and match as that’s how people are shopping; they are increasingly influenced by fashion and are less likely to go out to buy a matching three-piece suite. This is the sort of look you would see in an interiors magazine,’ says Michelle Hoines-White, A&J brand director. Though the collection is available in any fabric, she says many retailers will welcome the easy option of ordering in the colour schemes suggested in the display, which picked out mustard, emerald, ochre, spice and teal seen in the Gala Boheme pattern. Ashley Manor’s accent chairs featured new fabrics that created an air of opulence and luxury, with damask, bold stripes, contrasting piping and a mix of textures. In the pieces themselves there were touches like metallic finishes on chair legs and a new ‘dumpy’ turned leg in walnut. Its Room collection reflected the trend for smaller furniture to fit the more compact modern houses. Celebrity showed off Finsbury, launched in January, which can be fixed, manual or reclining. Cintique has been designing with the changing tastes of the traditional older customer base in mind. The idea has been to use fabrics that don’t perpetuate an ‘old-fashioned’ image. For example, the Winchester, one of the best-known models, is now available in a plain neutral shade. Florence, launched last year, is now available in fabrics to bridge the gap between traditional and modern. The established Richmond model has been glammed up with new covers, including leather, some exclusive to Cintique. This will help the company

access what it calls a ‘slightly cooler and more stylish’ generation of consumers. New at the show was the more contemporary Marco, including a chair with manual adjustable headrest. The company is also working on creating a fast-track ordering option, making a small choice of chairs available for delivery within 72 hours.

sales director. ‘Three-piece suites don’t really exist any more. It’s much more about having an eclectic mix of sofas and chairs, often in different fabrics.’ Parker Knoll also referenced the trend for compact furniture. For example, the Lincoln sofa occupies a smaller footprint than some other three-seaters. In Parker Knoll’s Maison collection –

Cintique’s Marco is a contemporary range featuring two sofa sizes, a snuggler, chair and footstool

Ercol’s contemporary new Gela collection includes a sofa in three sizes, an armchair and a small occasional chair. ‘New build houses are smaller nowadays so we are aiming to offer a choice of more compact furniture,’ says Nick Garratt, Ercol md. An example is the small dressing table in the new Salina bedroom collection. It debuted a dining collection in ash with a natural lacquer, which includes an extendable table. Fabric was also a big story at Parker Knoll with four new designs and colourways in the Westbury range. Greys and silvers are still on trend, though now appearing in herringbone, stripes, structured medallion and plains. ‘You can get these in any shape and any fabric,’ says Chris Everist, Parker Knoll

which adds an exclusive, boutique hotel feel to the more traditional models – the emphasis was on bold statement pieces, including a large purple sofa with coordinating floral pattern on the footstool and cushions. Again, the pieces are available in a range of fabrics, which fall into three price groups. Everist commented how ‘same shape, different clothes’ can make a real difference to how a model is perceived. ‘There’s lots of opulence and drama here, referencing French chateau-inspired art.’ Wade Upholstery launched Whistler with a deep, relaxed sit, available in any fabric. Chelsea also comes in a new shape and fabrics, featuring buttons instead of studs and with a smooth bullnose shape to the seat cushions.

Mayfair is now available in loose covers. The trend for chairs as accent pieces was also seen at Wade, with an ever-growing choice of chairs. Nadia Andrews, Wade marketing manager, says its in-house fabric designer has been working closely with local mills to develop new fabrics: ‘That’s a USP as we can offer exclusive designs.’ Various existing models are available in different fabrics. Simone, launched in May, appears in a new option: velvet on the bottom and linen or leather on the arms and seat. For the first time, the Rafferty chair is available in a fully aniline leather that retains its natural grain. Westbridge Furniture used new fabrics to show how relatively small changes to fabric composition – less wool, more polyester, for example – can make a big difference to the price. The company offers about 80 fabric options, including velvet, wool and satin. Nichola Bell, Westbridge sales director, says for example, that Odessa, launched in January, is now available at a significantly lower price because the cover is different: the model at the show was dressed in a contemporary grey. ‘It’s about creating value. There’s been a lot of interest in high-end models and here we’re showing how you can have a top spec model at an affordable price.’ The Lucia sofa, part of the Spirit range, was on show in a new cover, in Viva Rouge, a raspberry shade. ‘We’re seeing a trend for people to be braver and opt for splash of colour; teal, mulberry and garnet are all popular,’ says Bell. Flexible flooring Moduleo’s new designs are a response to demand LVT manufacturer Moduleo has complemented its most luxurious collection – Impress – with more designs. The launch is in response to strong demand from customers who require flexibility to create a unique floor, particularly in commercial settings such as hotels and leisure facilities. Innovative embossing processes have enabled the manufacturer to create grains, knots and grooves, with a design that fully mimics the surface texture of wood or stone, resulting in an authentic structure and depth of the respective materials. There are two categories: Impressive and Expressive. Impressive brings to life the smallest details, highlighting nature’s true beauty. Products within this category include Laurel Oak, Santa Cruz Oak and Sierra Oak. Both Laurel Oak and Santa Cruz provide light-washed, chevron and smooth ‘no knot’ effects, while rustic-look Sierra Oak and elm-style Marsh Wood brings the total colourways to 11. Stone design, Mustang Slate, is available in three colourways and mimics natural slate. Thanks to in-depth technological advancements, the Expressive lines mark Moduleo’s first products that give every plank and tile its own unique pattern and character, allowing flooring components to be mixed. Products are characterised by the abstract motifs of Mystical, Shades, Bohemian and Jumble Stone. Jumble Stone is a geometric 2D design, which gives a 3D illusion, while Fern Wood is a flexible finish that enables installers to mix and match planks to create their own style. ‘The next generation of Impress will add a new dimension to our product portfolio and drastically increase the number of lines available from the range. There is strong demand for alternative patterns and styles and these latest finishes provide that in spades, offering a wide range of designs and colourways that will transform any floor,’ says David Bigland, Moduleo UK and Eire md. Colour countdown QA has added specially selected colours to Luvanto Luvanto from QA Flooring has gone through a major upgrade to its range of colours to provide a selection which is designed to be exceptionally stylish. QA collaborated with retailers, architects, interior designers and magazine editors around Britain to get their input on the new LVT range and ensure every colour chosen was up to the minute. It was deliberately selective, with only the colours that were voted for unanimously making it into the final round. The result is a collection of just 30 colours in wood, stone and sparkle: so for those shopping for a new floor, whatever colour they choose from the Luvanto LVT range will be a stylish and trendy choice.

‘It’s so much easier for the retailer to sell the Luvanto range, because their clients can choose from the range with complete confidence and have luxurious, stylish floors in their homes at a sensible price,’ says Garry Atmore, QA marketing manager. Luvanto comes in three systems: Design, Click and Endure. The colours are the same across the systems, to give consumers complete flexibility in their choice of colour and installation method. ‘The Design range, as the name suggests, is installed using the gluedown method to give endless options for laying patterns and features, to create a floor which is unique and makes a statement in the home,’ says Atmore.

Click is quick to fit and ideal for DIY fitters. No glue is needed and the floor can be walked on straight away for minimum disruption. When fitted over QA SoundClick underlay it is much quieter to walk on. ‘The Endure range is a new generation of LVT, made from stone and plastic composite material for much greater strength and stability. It has an acoustic backing that provides 19dB sound reduction without having to use an extra underlay. It also has a tough 0.7mm wear layer for improved durability. Endure comes with a lifetime domestic and 20 year commercial warranty for complete peace of mind,’ adds Atmore. Visit: www.luvanto.com

Art of consistency Art Select has more wood styles in different formats Karndean Designflooring has added four Art Select designs with room to room spaces in mind. Designed to accommodate the growing trend for room to room floor designs, Karndean Designflooring is introducing the cool and multi-tonal grey hues of Storm Oak in a matching full length plank (1,219mm x 178mm), parquet (228mm x 76mm) and basketweave (305mm x 76mm and 114mm x 114mm) formats. With an existing Spring Oak full length plank and parquet design already available, the collection will also welcome a new Spring Oak basketweave design. ‘With traditional dark and rich brown tones already available as part of our Art Select Oak Royale collection, our new cool grey tone will be extremely popular with those looking for a more contemporary feel,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national retail sales manager. With the same design in three different formats home decorators can achieve a consistent feel throughout the home. ‘We’re expecting room to room floor designs to become an even more popular trend going forward. We also know traditional basketweave effects are back in style and when paired with parquet or full length designs they can make a real impact. Our newest basketweave designs are perfect for a statement hallway or highlighting key areas such as a dining space,’ adds Coyle. Art Select now offers 27 wood designs and 21 stone designs. Natural expansion Furlong has added to its LVT offer ‘Furlong Flooring is establishing itself as the first choice retail flooring brand,’ says Mike Symonds Furlong Flooring director. ‘We understand retail and the challenges faced by all of our customers; we run our business to support your business. Our products have to be the best quality at the best price supported by the best stock, service and delivery levels; we won’t provide you with a product that doesn’t pass this test. ‘This approach has driven the growth of our Regency Carefree carpets and has revolutionised the sector. LVT, wood and laminate products under our Natural Solutions brand and cushion vinyl product under our Design Elements brand receive exactly the same treatment, and this year has seen the introduction of many new products and stand concepts that will offer retailers a real alternative to their current supplier,’ he says. The Natural Solutions LVT collection now incorporates a 0.3mm wear layer range in click and dry back in addition to the two existing 0.55mm wear layer ranges, giving retailers a comprehensive offer in both price and colour. There are 14 exclusive wood ranges that are sustainably resourced. Traditional and modern colours on a combination of broad and narrow planks offer considerable consumer choice. A full range of matching accessories and underlays is also available. Natural Solutions has three laminate collections. Urban and Frontier offer 28 decors over three widths including four concrete tile designs. This year has seen the launch of an exclusive herringbone click range in eight colours. The Design Elements cushion vinyl ranges have undergone a major revamp.
