New owners, new proposition ScS’s shareholders have been rewarded by a healthy premium after interest from Poltronesofà ScS shareholders will be rubbing their hands at the premium Italy’s largest upholstery retailer is to pay to buy the UK’s second largest upholstery chain. Poltronesofà is paying a 66% premium – 280p a share compared with 169p before the offer was announced. The group is paying just under £99.4m, which shows how much investors had undervalued the chain before Poltronesofà came calling, especially as it has £50m in the bank. Poltronesofà says it will be able to provide the funding ‘to accelerate ScS's ambitions, [and] the acquisition will help ScS realise its full growth potential.’ Things could be about to get very interesting in that sector. It is shame though that ScS will no longer be a plc: its regular trading updates helped give a better picture of the retail upholstery market, and it was always interesting to see how its performance compared with DFS. Also getting a new future is the Buying Group’s National Flooring Show, which has been renamed INDX National Flooring Show, and becomes part of AIS’s portfolio of exhibitions. The show had been trying to boost visitor numbers by moving to a Sunday/Monday format but that never happened, and the simple but major decision has been taken to not limit visitors to members and potential members of the flooring buying groups for 2024. While exhibitors sometimes complained about the number of visitors BGNFS attracted (especially this year), the one thing they could never complain about was the quality of the retailers. One thing that doesn’t change is the huge sums the retail sector pays in business rates. With inflation static in September, the sector faces finding at least £470m more, to about £1.7bn. With business rates bringing in about £28bn a year, it is no surprise that governments have been reluctant to reform the system, but as John Webber, Colliers head of rating suggests, freezing the multiplier ‘only papers over the issues’.

Dreams invests in Anderson campaign Dreams has invested £4m in an advertising campaign designed to position the chain as perfect choice for those looking for a superior bed. The ‘Think what a Dreams bed could do for you’ campaign stars Gillian Anderson. The campaign aims to elevate the role of the mattress, highlighting the incredible things that sleep can do for us, such as helping us to be more alert, improving our memory and making us feel alive again. The launch advertisement sees Anderson encouraging the audience to ‘Drop in, lie down, and see what a Dreams bed could do for you’. It features a 60-foot art installation made of mattresses, drawing the audience into its dreamscape, inviting people to question what they sleep on before showing them how a Dreams mattress could transform their sleep.

Italian chain bids £99m for ScS Italy’s largest upholstery retailer, Poltronesofà, is to pay a 66% premium to buy ScS as it looks to enter the UK market. The Italian chain is to pay 280p a share, compared to ScS’s 169p valuation the day before the bid was announced. It values the UK chain at £99.38m. ‘As the next step of Poltronesofà’s pan-European expansion, the acquisition represents the best opportunity for Poltronesofà to enter the United Kingdom market of upholstery products. Poltronesofà believes it is strategically very well placed to support ScS in the next stage of its development, and by building on the combined industry knowledge and experience and providing the necessary capital to accelerate ScS's ambitions, the acquisition will help ScS realise its full growth potential,’ says Renzo Ricci, Poltronesofà ceo. ‘This cash offer, which the ScS board unanimously recommends, comes at an attractive valuation. It recognises the quality of the ScS Group's operations, its cash resources, and the progress accomplished under Steve Carson's leadership via his refreshed strategy. Poltronesofà, based in Italy, is a pan-European sofa retailer that has been successfully pursuing international expansion and ScS, with UK operations, is the next juncture of that strategy. The ScS board believes Poltronesofà will bring significant benefits to ScS through its broad industry expertise, in addition to providing the necessary capital to accelerate our current strategy, albeit in a private rather than public sphere. The acquisition will enable ScS to continue as part of a broader, pan-European entity in pursuit of its strategy and position it for long-term success in the UK,’ says Alan Smith, ScS chairman. Poltronesofà operates 167 stores in Italy, 106 France, 15 in Belgium, nine in Switzerland, two in Cyprus and one in Malta. Meanwhile ScS has seen order intake reverse in recent weeks. The 100-store chain says orders grew by 2.7% in August, slowed to 0.3% in September and fell by 4.4% in October. However, it says orders for the 12 weeks to 21 October were in line with a year earlier. ‘We remain cognisant of the challenging economic environment facing our customers, which is expected to continue throughout FY24. We therefore believe that continuing to focus on our value driven proposition is extremely important so that everyone is able to create the home they love,’ says Carson, ScS ceo.
Garden Trading has new £2m home in Swindon Outdoor and indoor furniture, accessories, lighting and kitchenware retailer and supplier Garden Trading has relocated to a much-increased warehouse after a major investment. The company’s parent, Yorkshire private equity company TIM Group Holdings which bought it in 2022, has invested £2m in new premises in Swindon, quadrupling capacity. As well as selling direct to consumers Garden Trading has more than 2,5000 trade customers. ‘This year has been all about embracing change in the name

As part of a wider growth strategy, the relocation of our operations is a key milestone in Garden Trading's journey, and we are really looking forward to embracing the opportunities that it will create. Furniture sales reach record, flooring has bumper month The value of furniture and lighting retail sales reached record levels in September, while flooring enjoyed its third best month in decades. Furniture and lighting sales in England, Wales and Scotland were £1652,827,000: an increase of 26.1% on August 2023 and 5.77% on September 2022. It is the highest level seen in 453 months since comparable records began in January 1986.
The Office for National Statistics data shows that September 2023 was the third highest on record for flooring, with sales of £271,804,000. March 2008 remains the record month, with sales worth £290,405,000. September’s figure is an increase of 22.6% on August 2023 and 6.9% on September 2022. The figures are subject to revision, not seasonally adjusted and do not allow for inflation.

The inflation rate for household furniture continues to fall
Inflation drops and climbs Retail price inflation for furniture fell again in September but flooring saw a rise. The rate for household furniture dropped from 4.2% in August to 3.4%. The past year has seen the rate fall steadily from 14.1%. In 2022 the rate averaged 14.9%. The Office for National Statistics said the main cause of the fall had been lower mattress prices. The rate for garden furniture fell from 5.8% to 5.1%, semi-reversing the jump seen in August. Lighting saw the rate increase, from 2.9% to 3.6%, but still half of what was seen a year ago.

Flooring retail inflation continued its topsy-turvy behaviour in September. Since March the annual inflation rate for carpets and flooring has developed a pattern of falling one month, only for it to rise the next, followed by another fall. September was no different: rising from 7.6% to 9.4%, although this is still lower than July’s 9.9%. It is, however, higher than the average for 2022, which was 8.3%. Price increases for carpets and rugs were 10.7% higher than a year ago, while smooth flooring also saw the rate climb, from 5.9% to 6.5%. FIgures are subject to revision.

The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show is to become part of the INDX series of exhibitions run by AIS, and will be open to all retailers. The show will be relaunched as the INDX National Flooring Show, and will take place on Tuesday 30 April and Wednesday 1 May at Cranmore Park. ‘The INDX National Flooring Show will be curated by buyers for buyers, working in partnership with flooring industry buying groups including ACG, AIS Flooring One, Bond Retail Marketing, Carpet 1st, Greendale and SMG, and supported by all the key UK and European flooring suppliers,’ says a statement. ‘We’re delighted to be adding the flooring category
to INDX shows. The INDX National Flooring Show will sit perfectly alongside our existing Furniture, Homewares, and Beds & Bedroom shows,’ says Jane Bartlett, AIS, INDX and Cranmore Park event director. ‘The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show has always been a busy, buzzy, well-attended event and we look forward to working with our partner buying groups to build on that success. ‘INDX shows are wellestablished, well respected and highly successful, and as business and buyer focused events they have always had a direct synergy with the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show, so it makes sense to bring the two together.’
Six for Martins A Hertfordshire furniture and flooring chain has opened its sixth branch, and its second in Watford. Martins Furniture and Flooring opened on Queen’s Road in the Hertfordshire town on 26 October. ‘Watford is a really good place, it’s busy and there is lots of hustle and bustle. There aren’t many other furniture stores in the town centre, and we thought this was a good opportunity,’ says Ady Miah, Martins Furniture and Flooring owner. The chain has an existing Watford store on St Albans Road, two branches in Letchworth and stores in Stevenage and Hertford.

Ikea UK sales jump 11.9% Ikea saw UK sales jump by 11.9% to £2.46bn in the year to the end of August. The chain saw an extra one million visits to stores, a rise of 2.2%, while online sales now account for 38.5%, up from 35.8%. It says it wants to expand its footprint in the north-west following the opening of Plan & Order branches in Aintree, Stockport and Preston. The coming year should also see the opening of its Oxford Street, London store. ‘Over the past 80 years, we have developed our offering, value chain and sales channels, supporting our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people. As we look back on the past year and forward to the next 80, we constantly ask ourselves how what we do today can be done better tomorrow. Over the past year, we have made significant investments on this journey to create a more accessible, affordable and sustainable IKEA, to meet the evolving needs of UK households,’ says Peter Jelkeby, IKEA UK & Ireland ceo and chief sustainability officer. Core takes legal action over copying Furniture producer Core Products has taken legal action against another retailer that copied its designs and was selling them to customers in the UK. The company, represented by intellectual property specialists at Taylors Solicitors, has successfully taken action against Mercers Furniture, which infringed its design rights by replicating items from its Augusta collection. The items copied were a bedside cabinet, chests of drawers, a wardrobe, a coffee table, a flat-screen TV unit and sideboards. Mercers Furniture and director Richard Mercer have provided undertakings to Core Products in respect of the infringement not to manufacture, hold or sell the

copied products; to deliver the infringing items in its possession to Core Products’ warehouse in Glenrothes; to retrieve the infringing stocks from trade buyers and deliver them to Glenrothes; to destroy all items in their possession which infringed the copyright of Core Products’ designs, such as materials and plans; and to pay a contribution towards Core Products’ legal costs. Taylors successfully undertook action last year for infringement of Core Products’ design rights in a dual case against retailers VidaXL Marketplace and HBI Commerce, but then discovered Mercers Furniture, which is based in Rotherham, had also copied its products and was selling them to
customers in the UK. ‘The Augusta Collection is an important and successful range for Core Products, a company which spends a lot of money on the design and creation of its furniture. Its products deserve to be protected against copying. This is the second case in which we have represented Core Products in protecting the Augusta designs, and we have successfully settled on both occasions. Our success demonstrates that those who seek shortcuts to success by copying successful designs will pay a heavy price. ‘Core Products will not let others get away with infringing its products for their own financial gain,’ says Tony Catterall, Taylors’ head of intellectual property.

Speechless Our correspondent couldn’t believe his eyes and ears THE RETAILER Fludes Carpets My son’s teacher was in the playground, and asked to see me when I was making the afternoon school run. Jonny was then six years old and very chatty. Miss Jenkins pulled me to one side. ‘Your son is full of enthusiasm but I was trying to get him to be a little quieter as I wanted to allow some of the other children to take part in the discussion about dinosaurs. Other children had been participating, but not as much as Jonny. But when I spoke with him about it, he looked at me and said: “I can’t believe my eyes and ears, everyone is talking.” Miss Jenkins looked a bit embarrassed and said she had to turn away because she was laughing at his response. ‘I almost fell off my chair,’ she said. ‘He was so funny.’ Fast-forward about 50 years and there was a repeat of this for me. In one day in September, I received three letters advising me of a price reduction. I could not believe my eyes. I polished my glasses and took another look. In black and white, there it was, the first tranche of lower prices. Is it because manufacturers’ costs are down? Or that imports from Europe are becoming less expensive to import? Or maybe things are getting tight, and the price change is to encourage sales? One small thing generally provides a clue to this. Look at the delivery lorries: if it’s 11.30am and there are only about a dozen carpets in the back of the van, then with a good deal of confidence you can surmise it is quiet in the stores. We are finding that customer numbers are steady but that the number of big orders is slowing. Most of the customers with big orders are asking for a discount – and they are showing us competitors’ quotes and asking us to beat our rivals. Price seems to be a priority, and people seem to have forgotten the value of good service and experienced staff. It is definitely something that we need to

bring into the sales conversation. Lowering prices is certainly worth considering, but it is not all about grabbing orders at any cost, starting a bidding war that will only lead to two things: a reduction of gross profit and a reduction in the cash flow. The customers will be the only winners. Autumn is upon us, and it is traditionally a period of good sales; a time to fill your
warehouses with sold stock, and a squeeze to get all the carpets and flooring fitted by Christmas. So, for now we will be patient and sensible with our negotiations when we are selling a carpet or flooring and hope that the manufacturers keep sending out price reductions. Talk matters Complaints can be resolved earlier if customers can find someone willing to listen My inbox has just been deluged with emails about monthly statements. It started when someone in someone’s accounts department sent out a notice to all their customers without using the ‘BCC’ trick to ensure everyone’s email addresses remained confidential. Now the complaints are being returned using ‘reply to all’ buttons, so everyone is being copied in to everyone’s angry reactions to that someone, although no-one’s really interested. Last week was no better. I sent an email suggesting that a certain comment should be removed from someone’s writing. I didn’t point out why, as the term they had used was offensive in the modern age. I received a rapid response, copied to everyone else, however remotely involved. The email spat was brief, but only because once a few others had made comments and inflamed the situation further, I picked up the phone and arranged to meet up so we could talk in a way that ensured we understood each other. Once we had reached an understanding and agreed a way forward, the preceding correspondence made interesting reading, if only to help us identify that no-one had meant things the way they had been taken by the recipients, and that was true on all sides of the correspondence. Electronic messages are fast – whether they’re emails (which seem to be relatively old-fashioned these days) or messages on one social media app or another. They tell the recipient what you want to say, but they give the recipient no opportunity to check their understanding, and do not give you any feedback on their reaction. Most people receive significant numbers of messages every day, so it’s no wonder they spend almost as little

time reading them as we spend writing them. It’s haste, not speed. They are messages, not communications. It’s sometimes hard to find a phone number when we need to talk about a problem to a company. Mobile phone and Internet providers are keen to push us through online channels as they believe them to be cheaper than having people at a call centre, where the costper-contact is relatively high if measured only in cash terms. We may try to give the customer many channels to use to get their feedback to us, but this doesn’t mean our communications are effective. When I go out to see consumers who have faulty goods, I find I am spending more time than ever just listening to sagas of the efforts the consumers have
made to try to get the retailer to understand their grievances. They have not had a clear channel of communication with someone willing to listen and as a result the situation, and their determination, has simply escalated. The complaint will not be resolved until someone helps them to feel they are being listened to. I hesitate to be absolute, but I’m pretty sure in every case the complaint could have been resolved at a much earlier stage if there was proper communication rather than one-sided messaging all through the supply chain. Production has been changed and a take-back scheme launched Rug company Louis De Poortere has switched its full product range to a circular economic model. The manufacturer has stopped use of cotton and switched to polyester and launched a take-back scheme. The 100% polyester construction (currently with 20% recycled content) has been chosen for the material’s easy recyclability and because it stays close to the look and feel of the cotton that it replaces. Polyester can also be recycled without loss of integrity, meaning that Louis De Poortere can turn it back into a new rug without any degrade in design or quality. ‘We have taken the decision to make our rugs circular, where the product can be recycled back into itself time and time again, so it was important to find a material that allowed us to do that with existing recycling technology – even more so as we’ve set a target of seeing a transition to the first 100% recycled rugs in 2025. Polyester gives us that opportunity, while still being able to manufacture rugs that uphold our design and quality standards,’ says Bert Schollier, Louis De Poortere production and development director. The company has created the Take Care scheme to ensure it can control the process. Once the rug has reached the

end of its useful life for the customer, they scan the QR code on the label and Take Care continues its journey back into a new rug. ‘What good is a recyclable rug that isn’t recycled or that simply ends up being burnt? ‘It’s a wrap! We love that moment when the doors close on the annual bed industry jamboree, otherwise known as the Bed Show. And this year we can look back with pleasure on an event that has been hailed by many as one of the best yet: it was busy, it was productive, it looked terrific and it was full of laughter and connection,’ says Tristine Hargreaves, National Bed Federation executive director. ‘This was my first Bed Show as executive director and it was fabulous to feel the buzz in the halls and get such positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike. We couldn’t do it without the support of all our organising partners and of course our generous sponsors, too – Boyteks, Enkev, Hypnos (thank you, Hypnos, for adding a fun and different element to this year’s show in helter-skelter form), Sealy UK, Silentnight, Sleepeezee and The Vita Group.’ ‘The Covid effect of the past couple of years seemed well and truly put to bed (excuse the pun!) as visitor attendance rose 20% compared to last year’s and exhibitors all reported real business being done, not just browsing. “I think this is our best show ever,” was a not uncommon comment. ‘The Bed Show has always been billed as the place to come if you’re in the business of beds and care about what’s going on. of the UK bed industry reveals new products and marketing plans for the year to come. And there was plenty of them to discover: something for everyone, covering value to premium pricing, niche to national distribution, large and small companies, and of course, everything from finished products to the latest innovations in materials, components and machinery and services,’ says Hargreaves. ‘Some people might find it hard to understand how we can all get so excited about hundreds of plain, pale-coloured rectangles but to those in the know, the level of ambition, ingenuity, innovation and quality displayed in everything

Hypnos celebrated at the Bed Show Soon to be 120 years old, Hypnos made its mark at the Bed Show, where it kickstarted celebrations for a wealth of key milestones and launched two new luxury collections. In 2024, Hypnos will also celebrate 95 years as a Royal Warrant holder, 13 of carbon neutrality, and five years working with Eden Project: emphasising its commitment to creating supremely comfortable beds for the well-being of people and the planet. With six different models and two tensions available, the Legacy collection means retailers can offer a unique sleep experience. Featuring British-farmed RWS wool, each hand-tufted, genuinely side-stitched mattress comes with a viscose sleep surface, giving it a

The Centurial 03 won the Bed Product of the Year award, which the whole Sleepeezee team was extremely proud of. Named to highlight Sleepeezee’s century of making handmade pocket spring beds, the Centurial Collection is made using 100% natural fillings, including multiple layers of British wool, soft alpaca wool and Talalay latex, which are all hand layered and not glued, and features up to 7,000 individually pocketed springs, as well as firmer rows of springs on the sides of the mattress to further reinforce the support given and reduce any roll-off. Innovating Roger Durrans, Jay-Be ceo talks winning Bed Manufacturer of the Year and expanding overseas Congratulations on winning Bed Manufacturer of the Year at the Bed Industry awards. Did you think you would win? ‘Honestly, we were hopeful but we knew we were up against some very strong competition. There are so many manufacturers in our industry striving to innovate, particularly in terms of sustainability, corporate responsibility and comfort, so we were extremely proud to receive this recognition.’ The judges were impressed by your focus on sustainability. How important is it to the company? ‘Sustainability is at the very core of Jay-Be and is embedded into our culture. The environment and our impact on it is considered in every decision we make – from how we design a product to how we manufacture it, to the materials we use, and how we deliver it. For example, our latest folding beds feature 100% recycled components and are 100% recyclable at the point of disposal. Something that is probably less known about Jay-Be is that we strive to push our sustainability achievements beyond just carbon reduction. For example, our distribution centre is a bio-diverse site: the grounds are maintained to promote and support wildlife habitats, increasing bio-diversity in the urban landscape.’ The judges also cited innovation in manufacturing and product development. Again, tell us more. ‘There’s been so many but some of the

most interesting are: the introduction of 3D printers within our Sleep Lab. This has significantly reduced the lead time of concepting and prototyping new bed designs. They’re also cool to watch! We use the 3D printers to make components for bespoke jigs used in manufacturing. Another innovation is adding QR codes onto our products to offer flexible product passport information, ensuring the consumer has access to the latest compliance and recycling instructions as they evolve. Finally, one of our most recent and largest investments is the new tooling we have developed to manufacture our folding beds quicker and with substantially less energy. We were pleased with all the judges’ comments, but the one that personally pleased me the most was when they referred to our certifications and accreditations. What can look like small logos in our literature represent years of sustained hard work to continually improve and achieve the highest of standards within our industry.’ You recently secured finance to fund expansion overseas. How complicated was that process and what are your plans are for exporting? Overseas markets can be hard to crack. ‘We currently export modestly to about 15 countries and expanding international presence is an important focus for our business, especially now we have several new products that offer distinct points of difference to what is currently available

in our target markets, primarily in relation to sustainability and health. Growing sales overseas can require significant capital, which can slow down export growth for many companies. After talking with Santander, it presented the export loan facility supported by UK Export Finance, and it sounded perfect for what we’re trying to achieve. The major benefit of this loan is its flexibility, so we only need to draw cash down as required, keeping interest costs to a minimum. The process takes a while, but Santander was very helpful throughout.’ What are you working on now that we can expect to see at Bed Show 2024? ‘If I told you now, I’d spoil the surprise! We’re always working on what we believe is going to be the next best thing, so be assured, we do have some significant product developments underway, and they’ll be ready for the next Bed Show.’ Visit: www.jaybe.com

The King’s representative visited the 183-year-old bed manufacturer’s Innovation Centre in Leeds to present the two awards to the company: it now has seven Queen’s and King’s Awards. The King’s Award for Innovation was granted in recognition of the company’s significant work as an industry leader in innovation and design, including its design and manufacture of glueless fine-wire pocket springs. Harrison Spinks also secured the King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, thanks to its continued focus on manufacturing premium, responsibly sourced, handmade beds and spring components in international markets. ‘We are all feeling extremely proud and humbled to have welcomed Ed Anderson to our headquarters to receive our two King’s Awards. ECO₂Blend debuted at the Bed Show

John Cotton is using new technology for carbon ‘negative’ fibres John Cotton launched ECO₂Blend at the Bed Show, a product that brings it a step closer to achieving a reduction in the company’s carbon emissions and helping its customers reduce theirs. John Cotton is always striving for innovation and creating products that reduce the negative and harmful impacts on the environment. Recently this has been elevated higher up the company’s agenda due to the targets set by the UK Government and customer requests to help design products that can reduce their carbon emissions. It has made a commitment to be a Carbon Net Zero business by 2040, and is already making some significant achievements. In 2023 John Cotton has been looking at using lower carbon materials within its products, contributing to its set targets and also helping its customers. Until now, most synthetic mattress or upholstery components that are derived from recycled polymers require intensive processing and energy, resulting in relatively higher carbon outputs. Customers have a limited choice in materials that offer a relatively lower carbon output, with most being animal or plant-based fibres that have restricted structural support. ECO₂Blend will be the first of its kind within the industry sector to provide a polyester blend that has a ‘negative’ carbon output, bringing tremendous value to customers by providing a

structurally robust solution while also aiding in reducing carbon emissions. It is fully recyclable at the end of life. In the past few months John Cotton has worked with one of its long-standing fibre suppliers to create a product that goes further than carbon neutral and is carbon ‘negative’. This fibre will form part of a unique blend to create the ‘carbon negative, earth positive’ ECO₂Blend. ECO₂Blend is created from waste gases, including CO2, which are diverted into a bio reactor that uses microbes to metabolise the gases into ethanol. This is then converted into mono ethylene glycol (MEG) and co-polymerised into 100% recyclable polyester (PET). John Cotton is the first company in the UK to utilise this technology in fibrous

The Bed Show saw innovation across the board New on the Sealy UK stand and rolling out across stores now is the Posturepedic Exquisite range with its RestSUPPORT three-stage coil system, delivering, according to scientists at Sealy’s research and development facility in Brisbane, 17% more pressure relief while maintaining the body’s natural alignment. To put it another way, it’s got what Nichola Pass, Sealy UK marketing director describes as: ‘that “aaaaaah” feeling as you sink into it.’ The mattresses also feature Sealy’s ComfortCore layer to relieve pressure on the lower back, and SmarTex fabrics to keep the temperature cool. The range is already a hit down under, where it’s been on the market for a few years and was Highly Commended in the Bed Product of the Year category at the Bed Industry awards. Bed bugs are a hot topic at the moment and there were plenty on the Protect-A-Bed stand: cute, pink cuddly ones with googly green-and-yellow eyes. ‘We’ve been really busy,’ the Protect-ABed team told Interiors Monthly. ‘Copper with its cooling properties is popular,

along with Tencel, and bamboo with its excellent sustainability credentials.’ A quintet of new bedframes graced the Burgess Bedding Company stand, with Pearl pride of place. An oyster shell Art Deco style bed in a rusty orange from Warwick Fabrics, Pearl stood beside her sister Orla, the same frame but with extra padding, and Pebble whose slinky sides and headboard are designed to create more space in the bedroom. Also on display was a revamped (at customers’ request) softer pillowtop mattress in the Grande range. Deluxe Beds had the top spot at the show as the first stand visitors saw when they walked in. New on the stand, under the Hamilton & James banner was the Splendour Boxtop 6000 removable pillowtop mattress. ‘The idea is that the pillowtop is completely removable so you can rotate and turn over the mattress every season, like a non-pillowtop, and those natural fillings will reinvigorate and be good as new,’ says James Appleyard, Deluxe Beds sales director. ‘Also, from a sustainability point of view, it’s great as

are not that far off, which compared to what I’m hearing from other companies is doing well. We have some new agents so we’re trading up not just in product with the success of Hamilton & James but in the people selling our product too. Our USP is hand-stitched mattresses with a quick, next-week lead time. As more and more people are buying online and demanding immediacy, that’s where we’re making inroads. And we’ve recently passed the Sedek SMETA ethical audit. If you’re dealing with Next and John Lewis, they want that type of accreditation.’ It is nearly a decade since Dunlopillo launched a new product, but it more than made up for it with everything on the stand making its debut. It upgraded its Talalay latex with the Elite Premium Talalay Collection. ‘Dunlopillo customers are Dunlopillo customers – they just come back and say: “We’ll have a new one,”’ says David Wescomb, Dunlopillo and Relyon brand director. ‘We think the new ranges are going to broaden the customer base without ostracising existing customers. We’ve got a pillowtop, for example, which we’ve never featured before. And

The reaction at the show has been very positive – retailers are telling us we’ve moved the game forward.’ ‘This is our fourth show and it’s the best yet with lots of quality conversations. We must be doing something right,’ says Nick Harland-Smith, Handy md. ‘We recently invested in two automated packaging machines – a lot of money, nearly £100,000 – which enable us to put components into individual sealed bags for customers. Historically we’d supply castors in boxes of 1,000, say, that they’d have to separate and attach themselves, so this is a big step forward. They love it.’ Silentnight, moving towards Net Zero by 2040, showcased two new ranges that will help meet that goal – the five-model Wool Range which focuses on traceability back to the sheep on the farm, and the vegan-friendly 100% recyclable at endof-life Plant Based range, totally free from animal-based products right down to the polyester in the tufts. The tester box for each of the four components in the Plant Based range’s comfort layer proved
popular as visitors plunged their hands into flax, bamboo, kapok and aloe vera. The consensus was that kapok was the softest. Meanwhile the Lift range has been expanded to include the Refresh mattress, targeted at midlife women with its breathable sleep system and staticreducing carbon woven into the surface. Shakespeare launched its Neom range of seven recyclable mattresses. Tagged ‘The Future of Sleep’, they are natural, chemical free, hypoallergenic, Fair Trade and made from ethically sourced materials. ‘We’ve had an average year but the reaction to the Neom range has been great,’ says Mohammed Zahoor, Shakespeare md. MIFF is celebrating 30 years Marking a significant milestone of 30 years in global furniture trade and fresh from its strongest ever growth, the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) is set to return on 1-4 March. MIFF has grown exponentially to become the largest furniture show in Southeast Asia, attracting buyers from 140 countries and regions. Poised for another 100,000sqm sellout, visitor registration has opened for the event at Kuala Lumpur’s biggest exhibition spaces – Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). The momentum for visitor and business growth has never been stronger. The anniversary edition takes place after MIFF’s best performance, with a peak of 673 exhibitors and a record US$1.21bn in sales orders in 2023. It drew in close to 20,000 visitors including 26% from overseas. Set for growth Heimtextil will see more halls Heimtextil 2024 will be expanded by two new halls: Hall 5.1 for the new Carpets and Rugs product segment and Hall 10.4 for Asian Selection exhibitors in the home textiles segment. Hall 3, which will serve as a creative hub for Heimtextil Trends 2024/2025 and exhibitors from the wall decoration, textile design and textile technology segments will also be reopened. In addition, the new Carpets and Rugs product segment, the realignment of the sustainable event formats as Econogy, and the expanded range in the Fibers and Yarns section will provide growth. Carpets and Rugs will showcase fitted, handmade and custom-made rugs, machine-made woven rugs, mats and dirt-absorbing rugs, as well as runners. Rugs are traditionally an integral part of Heimtextil, presented in various halls, but 2024 will see the offer grouped at the request of the industry. The segment is aimed at international wholesalers, home furnishing stores, consumer markets, home improvement stores, specialist retailers and garden centres. More than 90 exhibitors will participate, including many first-time exhibitors. Commitments have come from Bangladesh, Belgium, China, Egypt, Greece, India, Italy and Turkey among others. Exhibitors include Carpet Export Promotion Council, Fini Coop, Heritage Overseas, Merinos Hali San, Nikotex, Oriental Weavers Group, Ragolle, Royaltex, Rug Republic and Rugs in Style. At Heimtextil 2024, a realignment of all sustainable formats of the worldwide Texpertise Network will be launched with Econogy. Econogy standardises the evaluation criteria of all Messe Frankfurt textile events for sustainability and clarifies the holistic connection between economy and ecology. Its offering at Heimtextil includes the Econogy Finder, a directory to help visitors find certified suppliers. For many years Heimtextil exhibitors have the opportunity to have sustainability checks carried out in order to be listed in special directories. In the future, these checks will be harmonised across all textile fairs of Messe Frankfurt. Econogy thus creates transparency and comparability across trade fairs with regard to the criteria used to select resource-saving products and exhibitors. Other components of the Econogy offering are the Econogy Hub – the platform for seal providers and certifiers – and one-hour Econogy Tours offering an intensive exchange between visitors, exhibitors and experts. Under the overarching theme of New Sensitivity, textile transformation is the focus of the Heimtextil Trends 2024/2025, with three approaches showing ways to a more sensitive world of textiles: plant-based production of textiles, supporting circularity through technology, and the bio-engineered use
of natural ingredients. Invisible danger Subfloor moisture poses a particular threat when fitting wood floors Excess subfloor moisture poses a particular threat to the appearance of wood flooring installations. It is therefore never more important than when preparing to install wood floorcoverings to deploy a moisture management solution if necessary. ‘Achieving a long-lasting, visually attractive finish with timber floorcoverings demands that the same basic principles of installation are followed as for other types of floorcovering. However, wood is even more susceptible than textile or resilient floorcoverings to damage from moisture. If unmanaged, excess subfloor moisture, the result of either rising damp or residual construction moisture, will cause wood to warp and attack adhesives, potentially resulting in the floorcovering cupping or buckling and, ultimately, complete floor failure. Safeguarding against excess subfloor moisture is, therefore, an essential step,’ says Tim Green, F Ball and Co training manager. ‘In addition to ensuring a subfloor is suitably sound, smooth and free of any contaminants, including any old adhesive residues, it is essential to undertake a moisture test to determine if the subfloor is dry enough to receive a floorcovering. The only way of measuring subfloor relative humidity (RH) levels with accuracy, and the method advocated

by British Standards, is using a calibrated digital hygrometer. Normally, a liquid waterproof surface membrane will be required to suppress excess subfloor moisture and prevent damage to flooring when relative humidity levels are above 75%. However, the maximum permitted figure is 65% where wood floorcoverings will be installed, because of the sensitivity of this type of floorcovering to moisture.’ F Ball has two timesaving options for when a moisture management solution is required. Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane is a twopart epoxy resin system that is applied in a single coat. It cures fully in as little as three hours and will isolate residual

construction moisture or rising damp where RH values are up to 98%. For an even quicker way to create a barrier against residual construction moisture where RH values are up to 95%, there is Stopgap F78, a one-component system applied in two coats, requiring 15–20 minutes’ curing time for the first and a further 30 minutes for the second. ‘After checking for subfloor moisture and deploying a moisture management solution where necessary, contractors can proceed to apply a smoothing compound to ensure a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings, remembering to prime the subfloor beforehand. I usually recommend using a heavy-duty smoothing compound, such as Stopgap 300, prior to installing wood floorcoverings as these are better able to withstand the added strain exerted by the natural movement of the wood. ‘Finally, contractors must select a specialist wood adhesive to install wood blocks or planks. Utilising the latest technology, flexible wood floor adhesives such as F Ball’s Styccobond B95 provide an elastic but strong bond that will accommodate natural movement of the wood flooring over its lifetime, ensuring a long lasting, visually attractive finish.’ F Ball’s technical service department is on hand Monday to Friday, 8.30am–5pm to answer questions and offer advice on the best course of action for projects. The most recent launch was the AW23 Textiles range, showcased at the Autumn Fair. finish to show the beautiful grain. ‘Another is Iowa, which adds a contemporary rustic touch to a room. Its clever design looks like solid blocks of cross-sawn timber, but it is actually produced using architectural veneers for improved stability and practicality. Due to promotion, we are looking for an enthusiastic and committed individual with the ability to realise the full potential of the territory. Knowledge of the carpet trade is not essential, however previous sales experience is required as applicants must be able to demonstrate a proven successful sales record.
