EDITOR’S COMMENT

The start of a new chapter? Mattresses in a box has disrupted established players but things look likely to be about to change In the past few years nothing has been as much a disrupter to the established order in the bed market as mattresses in a box. New entrants have grabbed a notable market share, but in the main have struggled to make a profit. Existing suppliers have sought to counter them by entering the sector with rival products and trading on their brand recognition, while others have crunched the numbers and stayed well out of it. Now there are major changes happening in the mattress in a box sector, with possible mergers and a dilution of the original business model. I’ve said before that the market would eventually settle down to have a couple of major players but the overall winner would be the actual manufacturers of the mattresses. And this looks like it is happening, with Eve and Simba – both loss-making – looking to combine. It seems like Eve is trying to remove a competitor from the market, but the image of two drunks propping each other up sprang to mind. Elsewhere Emma and Casper have decided that shoppers do need to try the mattresses before buying and are now selling through John Lewis. Benjamin Quiroga-Rivera, Emma co-founder, says the business is profitable and he is ‘sceptical of adopting unsustainable strategies’ (such as spending far too much on marketing to attract customers). Meanwhile, Neil Parikh, Casper co-founder, says demand to try out its products (without the hassle of ordering and then possibly sending them back) continues to grow. For both brands and John Lewis the tie-ups make sense, adding a physical presence while widening its offer. On the topic of mattresses, the latest report from Oakdene Hollis reveals how far there is still to go before old mattresses cease to end up in landfill. Some 40% of mattresses are buried, 41% burned for energy and just 19% are recycled. Unless the rate – which is rising – increases significantly it will take 50 years before all are recycled.

Consolidation looms as mattress in a box brands secure John Lewis deals Loss-making mattress in a box firms Eve and Simba have begun merger talks, as rivals secure distribution deals with John Lewis. Eve told shareholders that the deal would be structured so it acquired Simba. However, it has suspended its shares on AIM as it cannot yet determine if it would be a reverse takeover. This would require the publication of an admission document and a general meeting: something it is not in a position to do. It warned that the talks could break down. ‘There can be no certainty that the potential transaction will proceed or certainty as to the terms of the potential transaction.’ Eve reduced losses from £11.9m to £5.9m in the first half of this year after restricting operations to the UK, Republic of Ireland and France. Simba secured funding in February but saw its value slashed from £200m to £20m. Eve’s share price peaked at 130p in December 2017 but was at 4.9p before it was suspended. Meanwhile Emma and Casper are to sell their mattresses through John Lewis. Emma has seen UK sales leap by 316% to £18m in the first half of the year and it is forecasting sales of £45m for 2019, a rise of 173%. ‘Emma’s 316% year-on-year growth is a testament to our profitable and sustainable business model, which focuses on product quality and clearly communicating product differentiation and function. We’re sceptical of adopting unsustainable strategies and believe we have found the right recipe for long-term success. Our strong H1 2019 results are further evidence that we’re on the right track and put Emma Mattress on course to solidify its position as the UK’s leading bed-in-box-brand,’ says

Casper will be sold in 24 John Lewis stores

Benjamin Quiroga‑Rivera, Emma Mattress co-founder. 15 John Lewis stores will stock the Emma Original Mattress and online. The chain will sell the original Casper mattress, pillow and the Hybrid mattress from 24 stores and online, in Casper’s first UK retail tie-up. ‘We’ve seen tremendous success in the UK over the past three years, and the demand to experience our products in-person continues to grow,’ says Neil Parikh, Casper co‑founder and chief strategy officer. ‘Partnering with John Lewis offers customers the opportunity to experience Casper.’ ‘Casper is a really exciting new brand for us. We’re delighted to launch its sleep products, including the new Casper Hybrid mattress exclusive to John Lewis in the UK, to complement our existing ranges,’ says Emily Wimborne, John Lewis beds and bedroom furniture buyer.

Meditor buys Carpetright’s debts Carpetright’s major shareholder has bought the group’s debts, but has held off from seeking a seat on the board. Meditor European Master Fund has bought Carpetright’s £40.7m credit facility from NatWest and AIB. It has also effectively bought the chain’s £6.5m

4

overdraft with NatWest and Ulster Bank after agreeing with the banks to provide funding for the overdraft. ‘In connection with the arrangements Meditor did not seek any assurances from the company, did not propose board representation and did not request structural changes in the business.

Interiors Monthly September 2019

The chain’s major shareholder has bought its debt

Meditor has confirmed it now intends to engage with the company with a view to providing a more stable and

longer-term funding platform,’ says Carpetright. Carpetright borrowed twice last year from Meditor ahead of its CVA. The first loan, in March was for £12.5m, with an arrangement fee of £1.9m and 3% interest. The second, a £15m loan in May, had a £2.3m arrangement fee and 18% interest rate.

NEWS

Laura Ashley ‘on recovery path’ after it sinks to £14m loss Andrew Khoo, Laura Ashley chairman, says the chain is on a recovery path after a sharp drop in furnishings and online sales saw it fall into the red. ‘The last 12 months have proved to be a difficult trading period for the group and indeed for the retail sector as a whole. The primary causes for the year-on-year drop in profit have been the performance of home furnishing and that of our website following a replatforming exercise which took place in November 2018. We have focussed on the reasons why home furnishings have underperformed and have taken necessary steps to mitigate this, including adding new contemporary product to our ranges. We have taken active steps to listen to our customers and now believe that we are on an appropriate recovery path. We continue to invest in our website and are working with our online service providers to ensure that it is optimised to deliver an enhanced customer experience and to achieve the desired growth,’ he says.

A pre-tax profit of £100,000 became a pre-tax loss of £14m in the year to 30 June. UK retail sales fell from £236m to £222.9m. Like-for-like sales dropped 3.5%. UK sales were split as follows: home accessories 35%, furniture 28%, decorating 18%, and fashion 19%. Home accessories sales fell by 0.8%, with like-for-like sales up by 1.1%. Its best performing products were lighting, seasonal gifting and bedlinen. Furniture sales decreased by 10.1% with like-forlike sales down by 9%. The chain said it would add more contemporary styles in the coming months. Decorating sales fell by 15% with like-for-like sales down 13.7%. It said more modern designs would be introduced. Fashion sales increased by 4.2% with like-for-like sales up 9.2%. Online sales dropped by 14.2%. Trading for the seven weeks to 17 August ‘is performing in line with management expectations.’

Victoria adds to Spanish operations Victoria has agreed to purchase a third Spanish ceramic flooring company: porcelain ceramic flooring manufacturer Iberoalcorense. For the year ended 31 December 2018, Ibero generated revenues of €30.9m (£28.3m) and adjusted EBITDA of €3.1m (£2.8m). ‘We have been successful at negotiating a very attractive price for Ibero with the initial consideration being less than 3x the last 12 months EBITDA and, including the maximum earn-out payment, it will still be under 5x EBITDA – before

6

considering the benefits of the expected synergies. These payments will be funded entirely from Victoria's current cash balances and will not require any further borrowings. Post-completion, nearly 75% of Victoria's earnings will come from outside the UK – continuing our transformation into an international flooring business,’ says Geoff Wilding, Victoria chairman. Operating from a site in Castellon, near Valencia, Ibero is strategically close to the group's existing Spanish

Interiors Monthly September 2019

ceramics manufacturers, Keraben and Saloni. Founded in 1958, it sells to a combination of wholesalers, retail groups, and independent stores throughout Continental Europe, North America, and the Middle East. ‘Ibero is a very high-quality manufacturer and is an excellent commercial fit with our existing Spanish ceramic operations and I am delighted that Victoria has secured this acquisition. In keeping with our acquisition criteria, Ibero is very well invested in terms of its manufacturing facilities and

will be immediately earnings accretive and positively cash generative on completion,’ says Wilding. ‘It has been 12 months since our last acquisition, Ceramica Saloni, which has now been fully integrated within our Keraben operation and is contributing strongly to our performance with the realisation of material synergies. Our strategy of achieving scale through acquisitions and using that scale to extract operational synergies continues to deliver value for the group.’

Just 19% of mattresses are recycled with 40% going to landfill While the rate of mattress recycling has increased in recent years, it will take 50 years before all mattresses are recycled unless the rate significantly increases, a new report has warned. The End of Life Mattress Report by environmental consultant Oakdene Hollis for the National Bed Federation estimates that 7.26million (181,500 tonnes) of mattresses were disposed of by households, businesses and service providers in 2017 at a cost of over £20m, excluding transport and handling – 91% of all new mattress sales. Of these, 19% (1.36million) were diverted from landfill to mattress recycling businesses. This is 55% higher than the 879,000 estimated for 2015. The rest went into landfill (40%)

or energy from waste (41%). It predicts that the rate increased to 20%-22% in 2018 (local authority and mattress production information is not yet available) but mattress recyclers reported their throughput in 2018 was 29% higher than in 2017. ‘It is gratifying to see this organic increase in the rate of mattresses being diverted from landfill but we still have a lot to do if we are going to meet the NBF’s ambitious target of 75% diversion from landfill by 2028 through a combination of mattress recycling with energy from waste,’ says Tony Lisanti, NBF president. ‘We must all accept shared responsibility, build mutual trust and work together proactively to achieve these goals.’

Upholstery and flooring chain ScS has seen orders pick up in recent weeks. The chain said like-for-like orders for the year to 27 July were up 4.2%. This compares to an increase of 2.9% in the 33 weeks to 16 March. ‘The full year performance reflects the strong growth the group has achieved in the last 19 weeks. This growth has been partly assisted by weaker comparatives in the prior year, as a result of the hot weather and football World Cup,’ it says. It says it expects profits to be in line with expectations. ‘I am delighted to announce that the group has traded in

line with our expectations for the year, an encouraging result given the challenging retail environment. This result is underpinned by the team's relentless focus on becoming Britain's best value sofa and carpet retailer, thereby facilitating our continued outperformance in the current political and economic environment’ says David Knight, ScS ceo.

SERVICE

Richard Renouf

The next life

Actions can have very long term consequences 24 May, 246 BC Shu-lan lays down her brush. The uniform she has just painted is brightly coloured but the warrior is motionless as he stands with the growing terracotta army being made ready to guard the tomb and protect China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, on his journey into the afterlife. He isn’t dead yet, but Shu-lan is one of the workers whose lives are dedicated to the Emperor’s best interests, and over time the model warriors will be joined by 130 chariots, each with four horses, and 150 cavalry horses and riders. It’s one of the earliest known examples of mass production but Shu-lan takes pride her work: eternity is a long time. 24 May, 2011 AD Sheila Burke calls the shop where, two weeks before, she bought her bed. It’s a small independent store and she paid £1,600. The assistant is quick to contact the manufacturer who delegates the inspection to a third-party company. The inspector is very chatty and Sheila learns a lot about his dog, but he takes no notes and does nothing more than lie on the mattress for a couple of minutes. Sheila’s more than disappointed when her complaint is dismissed: she’s angry.

24 May, 2014 AD Miles needs a story for his national weekly column. He searches online reviews and finds a bed story that will go well with some of the recent complaints that have been flagged up by consumers in his inbox. The new article goes to press and is posted online. 24 May, 1974 AD A farmer starts to dig a new well in Shaanxi. His spade hits something solid so he digs round to free it. Shu-lan’s work resurfaces. The astonished farmer carefully digs to uncover more ancient warriors and calls in the authorities. One of the greatest archaeological finds of all times is unearthed. Shu-lan and her fellow artists could not have imagined the impact of their work. 24 May, 2019 AD I’m visiting a house in south London to investigate a bed complaint. Two inspectors have been before me, but the bed has been declared ‘not faulty’. I feel for the spring edge in the mattress, working my way round all four sides. ‘The other two inspectors didn’t do that,’ says the customer. ‘I’ve found some articles and reviews online that show

Above: the Terracotta Army and (right) Emperor Qin Shi Huang

18

Interiors Monthly September 2019

this happens a lot. It looks like I’m just another person who’s been badly treated by this company.’ 24 August, 2019 AD I’m looking at Shu-lan’s warrior in the Terracotta Army exhibition. ‘Why would anybody spend their whole life preparing for the next life?’ says a woman loudly. I want to say just as loudly, ’Why wouldn’t you?’ but discretion prevails. What I do today may be ‘just a job’ but it too has lasting consequences. It could be a treasure that is appreciated by a customer for years to come; or it could change a reputation; it could become an online artefact waiting to be discovered at any time in the future. It could become the trigger for a costly thread of complaints that anyone could uncover. Why would I not give every customer the best possible service? New home

The building was originally designed in 1986

Anyone driving along the E17 highway near the Belgian town of Waregem recently will have noticed the revamp of an iconic building. Here, Belgian vinyl flooring manufacturer IVC Group decided to turn a vast complex – known for its angular shapes and large pitched roof structure – into its new Flooring Development Centre. ‘Our production site and headquarters in Avelgem had become too small to keep up with IVC’s worldwide growth,’ says Cindy Van Moorleghem, IVC Group marketing director. ‘This triggered us to move our showroom as well as our commercial and design departments – which house around 100 people – to Waregem. Meanwhile, our production, finance and logistics activities remained in Avelgem. ‘The new Flooring Development Centre had to become an inspiring place where customers, designers and

22

architects from around the globe can intuitively discover IVC’s latest designs, innovations and R&D developments. We also wanted to have an auditorium, a training centre and catering zone at our disposal, where people can come together in an informal yet stimulating setting. Boosting togetherness and collaboration was also a key requirement for the building’s first and second floors: the new homes of our commercial and design departments respectively.’ The company turned to architect Glenn Sestig to bring the 53,800sqft paradigmatic building into the 21st century, including a 13,450sqft showroom. Originally designed by architect duo J Verbauwhede and P Vandekerkhove in 1986, the Brutaliststyle building is not only easily recognisable, it’s registered as a heritage site. Sestig had a double mission: to respect the construction’s original 

distinctiveness while fulfilling IVC’s contemporary expectations. ‘The building’s idiosyncratic shape was likely the result of a specific request from the original client,’ says Sestig. ‘A simple look at the surroundings makes that clear. All the other complexes along the E17 highway feature flat roofs and straight shapes, while the property purchased by IVC stands out due to its large pitched roof. It’s truly one of a kind and has become iconic locally. Our main concern was to make the design more contemporary and functional by adding or removing as little as possible to the existing structure. ‘The original structure of the building had stood the test of time but little had been done over the years to keep its outward appearance up to par. We found the property in quite a desolate state: a time-battered construction with bluepainted windows and a mishmash of cladding materials. The pitched roof, for instance, was primarily made of zinc, except for the top element, which literally sticks out. In modernising the building, we turned the roof structure into an elegant whole, clad entirely in zinc and featuring large windows.’ While the exterior presented various aesthetic challenges, the interior came with a major functional problem. ‘Heating the building effectively had been problematic from the moment it was constructed. Because of the numerous open balconies on the inside,

26

Interiors Monthly September 2019

the warmth would rise into the air in no time. This left employees and visitors at ground level shivering, and people on the top floors gasping. ‘In previous renovation attempts, the interior balconies had been closed using building boards: but to no avail. After exploring our options together with our engineering partner, we decided to keep the balconies closed for acoustic reasons and to install floor heating

systems to keep the warmth at ground level,’ says Sestig. ‘Floor heating is more efficient because no energy is lost through ducts, and the circuits work at relatively low temperatures. But there are many other elements that contribute to the energy efficiency of our new Flooring Development Centre. These include heat recovery ventilation, a free cooling network, solar panels on the roofs of nearby warehouses, and low-energy LED lighting systems with motion and daylight detectors – to name just a few. ‘In fact, the entire building is eligible for LEED certification, showcasing its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,’ says Van Moorleghem. In addition to modernising the building’s aesthetics and functionality, creating an intuitive foot traffic plan was also essential. ‘There are four major shafts in the building,’ Sestig explains. ‘We decided to strip these down to the core, revealing their raw concrete texture, so that they are instantly perceived as the building’s main pillars. As such, they serve as the main circulation elements and help optimise the movement of customers, employees and other visitors through the building.’ ‘From the moment they walk in, visitors embark on a physical  IMAGE: JEAN-PIERRE GABRIEL

customer journey,’ continues Van Moorleghem. ‘As they wait at the reception desk, for example, visual elements and touch screen installations invite them to learn about the past and prospects of IVC Group. Next, our Innovation Corner allows them to discover our recent flooring innovations and promising R&D efforts. After this, visitors step into an area where they get to know our flooring materials.’ This area has been divided into sections using only materials and design elements. Visitors are intuitively guided from one space to the other, enabling them to discover IVC’s portfolio. ‘For starters the IVC Commercial Library features modifiable mood boards and sample storage units mounted onto the stripped, concrete walls. Add to that the coffee corners where visitors can take a break whenever they want, and you get an informal yet inspiring studio-like atmosphere. ‘What’s more, we combined contrasting flooring materials into one harmonious floor pattern that can be adapted to feature new IVC floor tiles, and even installed some of IVC’s flooring materials on the walls for an idiosyncratic touch. We also played with the idea of artificial realness by allowing vinyl flooring elements to enter into dialogue with the concrete environment provided by the walls and shafts,’ says Sestig. ‘Each section also exudes its own identity. The IVC Commercial Library has the ambience of a modern flooring materials library targeting a broad

28

audience of international designers, architects and project developers. Meanwhile, the Moduleo House has a more domestic feel and displays flooring materials to highlight their attainability and comfort,’ says Van Moorleghem ‘We gather our B2B brands in the Residential Market Place, inviting buyers to compose their own collections with the materials on hand. This space aims

to showcase our collections and inspire retailers to present the materials in similar ways in their own stores.’ Providing an inspirational setting is also what guided Sestig in revamping the first and second floors of the Flooring Development Centre. ‘Here, goals of enabling collaboration and ensuring the wellbeing of IVC’s employees had to reign supreme. My team even followed a number of IVC employees as they went about their day-to-day jobs in the former office environment, to make sure that our design doesn’t impede with how they work and collaborate with each other,’ says Sestig. It wasn’t just about functionality. ‘Sestig and his team successfully gave each floor a different aesthetic identity that fits the teams that will be working there. On the first floor, our commercial teams will feel at home in an office area that plays with greenish tones and contrasting materials that blend harmoniously. On the second floor, dark reddish colours set a more intense tone to provide our creative teams with a stimulating setting that’s made to measure,’ says Van Moorleghem. Contemporary neutrals have been added to the Van Gogh collection Karndean Designflooring is introducing six authentic oak designs to its established Van Gogh collection. Expanding its array of contemporary and classic timber designs, Van Gogh has a new mix of fresh, clean and neutral tones including French, distressed and refined oak hues as part of its latest update. The cool neutral colourways range from Blush Oak, with its gentle pink undertones and subtle flowery grains, to the warmer smoky shades of Misty Grey Oak. Offering a traditional wood design in two on-trend colourways, Karndean’s French oaks – Blush and Greige Oak – have been designed to accommodate modern bright spaces as well as classic rustic decors. They both offer a neutral backdrop and allow home decorators to accessorise from the ground up. Inspired by the original design of Distressed Oak, an existing Van Gogh plank, Light Distressed Oak offers more pronounced grains with greater knot and line details. This weathered style achieves an authentically rustic yet versatile finish for any modern home. The updated collection delivers a touch of simplicity with three complementary and understated colourways, ranging from warm to cool. Misty Grey, Cool Grey and Natural Prime Oak are designed for spaces where home decorators are looking for a timeless interior that never goes out of fashion. The 48in x 7in plank size is ideal for any room of the home and lends itself

to small and large spaces alike. It can be used in compact areas to make a room appear bigger or in larger areas on an angle for added visual interest. There’s also the option to personalise with design strips and consider keyline or tramline border features to frame a room. Design strips can be introduced in between each plank to create a ship’s deck laying pattern or added around the entire plank for a grouted tile effect. They can also be placed between every other plank to achieve the illusion of a wider room. ‘Our Van Gogh collection remains the go-to collection for anyone looking for the authentic look and beauty of natural

timber in the home,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national retail sales manager. ‘The enhanced palette now accommodates for modern and contemporary decors with cool, neutral tones which are on many a home designer’s wish list when considering the floor. ‘The new colourways will complement a range of trends including sugared Scandi. Evolving from the timeless Scandi look, new Blush Oak brings soft pastel tones to a minimalist wood look.’ With a lifetime residential guarantee, the Van Gogh collection now features 32 wood designs. BEDS AND BEDROOM

Simon Williams is National Bed Federation marketing manager

‘Buzzwords abound nowadays but there is one word that keeps cropping up: sustainability. With the mounting awareness of corporate social and environmental responsibilities, businesses across all sectors and industries are incorporating sustainable practices as part of the business strategy. ‘In the bed industry, it’s no longer good enough to launch innovative new products that only meet customers’ requirements for design, comfort and price. Of course, these are key considerations when buying a new bed or mattress but consumers (in particular), specifiers and retailers increasingly want to buy sustainable products manufactured by socially responsible businesses that source materials and manufacture their products ethically and can demonstrate that they have policies in place to reduce energy consumption, carbon and waste production as well as having reuse and recycling procedures.’ says Simon Williams, National Bed Federation marketing manager. ‘Some of the larger businesses in the bed industry have the luxury of in-house sustainability teams. Smaller businesses are not so privileged and are often limited by financial and time constraints, as well as limited sustainability know-how. However, SMEs should view sustainability not as a burden but as an opportunity to better promote their business. In so doing, sustainable companies will attract the rapidly growing consumer group that is willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products and services. ‘Another growing consumer trend is to seek out and buy products that are

38

Interiors Monthly September 2019

“eco”, “organic” or “free from”. Initially led by the food industry, people are becoming increasingly concerned not only about what they put into their bodies but what chemicals are used in the production of household items such as beds and furniture. Of course, all items are made up of chemicals, but it is the addition of flame retardants that a growing number of consumers are wanting more information about. ‘In mattresses, this tends to affect foams and fabrics in particular, as well as any adhesives used. Ticking suppliers are now introducing products that are inherently flame retardant and Harrison Spinks recently announced that all its new mattresses going into development will be foam and glue free, enabling it

Bensons for Beds introduced diagnostic tools to produce sleep profiles for customers

to produce mattresses that will be 100% recyclable. Surely this move will be followed by many other manufacturers keen to reduce the 7.5million beds sent to landfill in the UK every year and to establish their “green credentials”. ‘Today, customers expect companies to tailor their products or services specifically for them. In the online world, ecommerce websites will adapt their recommendations according to what you’ve already bought. Bricks-and-mortar retail businesses are beginning to offer the same experience, where shoppers can buy products customised especially for them. This level of personalisation doesn’t just give the customer what they want: it also creates a closer bond between brand and consumer.

BEDS AND BEDROOM

‘For beds this doesn’t just mean a customer choosing a specific fabric or firmness: it could be having their name embroidered onto the label or the handles. At Bensons for Beds and Dreams, consumers can also receive personalised sleep profiles from diagnostic machines that take thousands of measurements to pair the user with their ideal mattress. There may well be an element of creative marketing about it, but nonetheless it provides the retailer with a point of difference and the consumer with a feeling that they are individual and getting a customised fit. ‘If your brand hasn’t got a dedicated external sleep expert then you’re missing out. This has been one of the biggest changes in recent years. Retailers and manufacturer brands used to sell beds: now they sell sleep solutions and employ the services of well-known or lesser wellknown experts to offer practical advice and tips to our sleep-deprived nation. ‘When the Sleep Council launched in 1995, it was pretty much a lone voice educating consumers about sleep and the importance of a good bed, regularly replaced. Today, with everyone talking about sleep, it’s getting harder and harder to get heard, although the Sleep Council has the benefit of being considered impartial by the media as well as having almost 25 years’ worth of research data, surveys and campaigns to call upon. ‘Using carefully selected ambassadors to help promote your brand, or sponsoring sports stars, teams or events,

is another area where bed companies have seized the opportunity to extend their appeal to today’s health-conscious consumer. Thanks to the new “bed-in-abox” brands, mattresses are now sexy and getting a great night’s sleep is now as important as diet and exercise in leading a healthy lifestyle. It raises the question: who was the last sports star to actually buy their own bed? ‘Product development and innovation is the lifeblood for bed manufacturers. Customers love anything new and the pace of change is relentless. You have to keep ahead of the curve and as the saying goes: if you see a bandwagon, it’s too late. ‘At the recent Las Vegas Summer Market, Serta launched the iComfort

range, billed as “the next level cooling and support system”. It used Gel Active Max memory foam, UltraCool System carbon fibre memory foam, Max Cool Covers and Air Support Foam to bring a “sleep cool” story to life. It had a snowflake rating system to help the consumer understand how it all works. The more snowflakes on a bed, the cooler the sleep. Simple. The truly innovative part was how it demonstrated how the carbon fibre memory foam worked. Using a lightbulb, you placed it on the foam and it lit up, showing the consumer how the carbon acts as a conductor to help draw heat away from the body. Brilliant. Will we see any lightbulb moments at the Bed Show?’ Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

Sealy’s Activsleep is benefiting from consumers’ changing attitudes to sleep ‘When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, sleep is often the last piece in the puzzle. But, with the average person waking up feeling tired and unrested four days every single week, as a nation we’re still far from getting the sleep we need for optimum health,’ says Holly Housby, Sealy UK marketing controller. Sealy’s Activsleep range, launched last year, has been the company’s most successful product launch in more than a decade. Housby says this is down to changing attitudes to sleep, especially amongst the younger generation. ‘It used to be that good sleep was an afterthought, and you’d see people struggle along with the same unsupportive mattress for 10 years, but increasingly people are starting to realise the positive impact that a good night’s sleep has on health and wellbeing. We’re all starting to become more health-conscious, whether that’s understanding how to follow a healthy diet or recognising how important it is to exercise and keep active, and being aware of how to sleep in a healthy way is the latest part of that.’ Designed for those who lead active and healthy lifestyles, the Activsleep range has seen the company build on

42

Interiors Monthly September 2019

a key Sealy philosophy: that the quality of the sleep you get is just as important as the number of hours you get each night. With people now tracking their sleeping habits in the same way they track their steps or their calorie intake, Sealy has recognised how important technology is amongst a healthconscious audience, and has put the latest innovations in sleep technology at the heart of the Activsleep range. The entire collection includes Sealy Smart Fibres, a package of unique and innovative fibres that hold the Allergy UK seal of approval and are exclusive to Sealy. They include Purotex, a probioticsbased textile made up of five 100% natural bacteria. Purotex microcapsules release friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress to clean up allergens, reduce humidity and create a clean, healthy sleeping environment, making it easier for people to get the healthy sleep they need. The collection also includes nine unique models with different comfort ratings and spring systems, making it easier for a wide range of sleepers to find the mattress best suited to their needs. From Geltex models which offer pressure relief, body support and breathability to

extra-firm mattresses which use a PostureTech Zero Deflection system to minimise partner disturbance, the range offers a diverse collection designed to make achieving a healthy night’s sleep easier than ever before. Housby says that the collection will become more popular as consumers start to catch up with the industry’s increasing focus on sleep for health. ‘Sleep is the last frontier, the missing piece that people struggle with when trying to live a healthy lifestyle. People are only going to become more aware with time, and we believe the collection will increase in popularity as consumers start to realise how good sleep can complement a healthy life,’ she says. Women estimate they sleep three hours less than their partners every night

Divided

The gender sleep gap has been revealed and a stigma about fatigue

A nationwide study has found that half of British women say they feel constantly sleep deprived, while a third claim to have a broken night’s sleep every night, compared to just 20% of men. The study of 1,541 people conducted for Bensons for Beds, found that the average British woman estimates she sleeps three hours less than her partner every night: more than 45 days a year. The study also found that 19% of British women claim they always reach Friday feeling exhausted, but never have time for a weekend lie in to catch up on lost sleep – with 14% admitting this leaves them feeling utterly miserable. Some 21% of the country’s women claim they feel ugly when they haven’t slept properly, 34% feel depressed, and 21% say their diet goes out of the window when they are tired. And the gender sleep gap causes friction in households, according to the research, with 15% of UK females confessing they feel annoyed that their

52

Interiors Monthly September 2019

partner gets more sleep than them, and one in five admitting they are routinely rude to their other half due to exhaustion. Some 7% regularly argue with their partners about sleep, with 8% even claiming it’s their other half’s selfishness that means they manage to sleep so well. The study also found that 15% of British women admit they needlessly shout at their children when they are tired, leaving them feeling guilty and remorseful. When it comes to what keeps women awake at night, the study found that 22% say it’s their partner’s snoring, and 14% claim it’s because it is always them who has to tend to children who wake at night, while the men sleep on oblivious. A a third of women believe their other halves are just inherently better at sleeping than them, while 18% say that their partner is much less stressed, and so sleeps better overall. The study also found that, when they do actually manage to get a good night’s sleep, a fifth of British women believe

they look younger, 21% say they feel much more confident, and 30% feel more in control. ‘It makes sense that men and women have different sleep needs – we are in some ways very different. What with hormonal changes that come with menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, the biological differences alone are huge. With this in mind it’s really helpful for us to get into a few good sleep habits that can help get us through,’ says Stephanie Romiszewski, sleep physiologist and Bensons for Beds sleep expert. ‘Sleep – or lack of sleep – can affect so many aspects of our day to day lives. It’s worrying to see that this research has found that our nation’s women are getting less sleep and feeling more tired than their male counterparts,’ says Helen Nunn, Bensons for Beds head of marketing. Along with the survey, the British Psychological Society conducted psychological interviews with 12 people,

BEDS AND BEDROOM

10% of people get just one hour of sleep a night

each lasting approximately 40 minutes, and found that the public’s perception of fatigue is linked to mental health. Despite 10% confessing to having survived on just one hour of sleep a night, the nation is not seeking medical help due to the public stigma associated with the issue. ‘The stigma attached to feeling fatigued, which is a perception that we are not in control and cannot handle our stress, prevents people seeking help,’ says Dr Simon Moore, British Psychological Society lead psychologist. According to the psychological analysis, fatigue is stopping people from living full lives. Interviewees describe fatigue as a state where, due to their lack of energy and motivation, they feel both mentally and physically slow. ‘It feels like a force pushing me to the ground,’ commented one participant. The survey also found that 31% of the nation admit a lack of sleep makes them feel depressed and 30% feel anxious when tired. 49% of the nation feel moody and distracted when tired, while 34% admit they function poorly at work most days due to tiredness. A further 15% admit they put things off in their lives, with Gen Z being the most likely to cancel social plans (18%). The psychological investigation unveiled that knowing how to differentiate between feeling sleepy and

being fatigued can help us to deal with sleeping problems. ‘Whilst participants found that feeling sleepy is positive and a natural order for our body, there is a lack of understanding around what fatigue is which, if left untreated, can stop people from living full lives because they do not know how to overcome it,’ says Moore. One participant said: ‘Fatigue implies weakness, less strength and discipline; you can’t bring yourself to your optimal level at work.’ The worry of not being able to sleep actually left participants feeling even more sleep deprived as a result. According to participants, the ‘eight-hour sleep myth’ can cause more stress, as knowing you won’t achieve this amount of sleep can add to the feeling of anxiety at bedtime. ‘If I go to bed late and know I won’t get my hours of sleep, I will get stressed and feel even worse,’ commented one participant. ‘Our bodies are not designed to deal with modern day stress. We are in a constant state of psychological fight or flight, leading to our batteries running dangerously low,’ says Moore. ‘What we are seeing here are potentially two types of people and two sets of symptoms: those that are sleepy and potentially sleep deprived, and those that are fatigued but confusing it

Stephanie Romiszewski

with sleepiness and seeing “sleeping it off “ as the solution. Confusing the two issues is causing us to fear conditions we may not even have, and alter our behaviours in ways that aren’t actually helping (such as going to bed early but not being able to actually fall asleep),’ says Romiszewski. ‘Being sleepy at the right times is actually good and healthy for you. Ask yourself, are you able to nod off right now? If you can’t, your symptoms may not be sleepiness. They are fatigue and can’t necessarily be cured by forcing bed in the first instance. Being fatigued – having brain fog or just feeling like you need to “rest” all the time – is not the same as feeling sleepy. Yet we start changing our sleep routine behaviours, and altering our daily healthy behaviours, compromising nutrition, exercise and social lives in order to “cope”. This can unfortunately make fatigue worse and actually cause sleep problems as we move away from the consistency of a regular routine which our bodies thrive on,’ says Romiszewski Stressful lives are to blame for stopping us sleeping well, with 28% revealing their stressful day keeps them up at night. The stress of work specifically keeps 16% of Brits awake, and not getting enough exercise is the key reason 11% cannot sleep. Visit: www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk

The sumptuous feel of the mattress can be attributed to the combined functionality of Viscoool and the 4cm thick Salus Comfort Layer. Add in a 3,900 dual layer pocket spring system, a sleep surface with integral natural fibres and a deep quilted mock pillow top cover and the Samphire is designed to offer everything for a top quality night’s sleep. Millbrook Beds will debut a quartet of collections at Telford Millbrook Beds will be unveiling four ranges at the Bed Show. Nine months of research, development and innovative thought has culminated in four natural handmade mattresses: the Grandeur, Majestic, Ortho and Pillow-top collections. New technology and investment in machinery, combined with Millbrook’s renowned handmade approach, has enabled the company to develop a range with a more sumptuous feel, offering models with higher spring counts up to 14,000 pocket springs, and greater sustainability credentials. Consultation with retail partners as well as listening to comments and recommendations from the sales team has also been an important contributing factor to the range innovations.

58

Interiors Monthly September 2019

The mattress collection is now chemical-free, offering a 100% natural sleeping surface: no chemicals have been used in the cotton covers or in any of the natural fillings, which include Hampshire wool, English spun cotton and Cashgora. 100% fleece wool grown in the county of Hampshire has been specially selected to make Millbrook mattresses. Sheep from the Hampshire Down can be recognised by their black face, and the sheep living here produce a fleece that tends to be fuller and bulkier. All mattresses containing Hampshire wool feature a single black tuft in the bottom right-hand corner. This mark of quality tells the story that this mattress has been made using only Hampshire wool.

Super-soft breathable Tencel is used for the sleep surface of the new Pillowtop mattress. This fabric is produced from sustainably sourced wood using environmentally responsible processes. In addition, Millbrook Beds currently re-purposes nine million plastic bottles a year for use in mattress borders and headboards. ‘We have been burning the midnight oil for nine months, developing and refining our range, because innovation never sleeps. We now have a product with enhanced performance that will provide an amazing sleep experience. We expect this new range to change the perception of Millbrook Beds’ product completely,’ says Ross Thurston, Millbrook Beds operations director. Visit: www.millbrook-beds.co.uk

Mayfair 13,000 on contemporary bedstead

Gainsborough is adding another option to Mayfair In a short space of time, Gainsborough’s Mayfair collection has become an impressive success story. The range has been well received by retailers and this is due, in part, to the early involvement of key retailers during the design process. ‘We recognise that bricks and mortar retailers have a unique understanding of what their customers are looking for. Being able to tap into that expertise and

design a product based on the feedback has been extremely useful. The results are impressive, with many multi-store retailers citing Mayfair as their bestselling range. “Mayfair is now my pocket of choice,’’ to quote one retailer,’ says Nick Gigg, Gainsborough md. Fillings including cashmere, merino and alpaca wool are finished with up to three rows of hand side stitching, hand tufting and eight embroidered flag-stitch handles. There is a choice of 3,000, 5,000, 7,000 and 13,000 pocket springs. The next phase of the Mayfair’s development is a pillow top. ‘The clever combination of micro-springs and fillings reduces settlement yet offers the same generous specification. Crucially for the

retailer it can be offered at exactly the same price points as the regular version. Mayfair is designed to make the retailer’s job as easy as possible. The look and feel of the mattress sells itself and we’re rolling out new options to satisfy as many customers as possible,’ says Gigg. Mayfair is made in the UK and carries a 10-year frame guarantee. ‘This range was conceived to give retailers a collection that they could confidently offer to any customer looking for a top quality bed, and it has proved that it can deliver a compelling solution. ‘The methodology behind creating Mayfair was a bit of a departure for us, but its success reassures me that we got it right. My aim is to bring the thinking behind the range development to the rest of our portfolio. There are plans for the rest of the bed range, and some very exciting developments on our sofa bed range. ‘The Mayfair project started with us liaising closely with our retailers, so I would encourage customers to come and talk to us about Gainsborough’s future plans at the Bed Show.’ Visit: www.gainsborough-beds.co.uk

hushabye has new branding

hushabye will debut a new look and models With a fresh new look, hushabye will introduce edj, a contemporary mattress with a supportive outer edge and a pocket spring core that offers edge-toedge support. ‘We are often told by retailers that the benefit of edge-to-edge support is not high in customers’ awareness. Once they understand that this gives them much more of a sleeping surface it becomes a key selling point,’ says Nick Gigg, hushabye md. edj has three models: Pure, a 2,000 spring count mattress featuring natural wool, silk and cotton fillings; Shape has 3,000 springs and features memory foam; and Cool features a latex gel layer, 4,000 pocket springs and a soft knit stretch cover, which assists with the cooling effect. The three models will be shown at the Bed Show on hushabye’s new contemporary bedstead, which features a drop-in platform instead of slats. It will be joined by the new Natural Backcare collection. The four models feature natural fillings such as wool, cotton, silk and bamboo. The signature look is soft and natural with a 100% cotton cover. The Natural Backcare collection is available with 1,000, 1,200, 1,500 and 2,000 springs, each available in firm and extra firm tensions. Hushabye will be launching six headboard styles, available in any of the wide selection of fabrics. These will

62

be available as strutted or floor-standing headboards or with the new bedstead. Alongside the new products, the company will introduce new branding. ‘hushabye has been changing over the last couple of years, with more emphasis on innovation and design. We had feedback from retailers that the brand may not reflect the forward thinking that hushabye demonstrates,’ says Gigg. ‘The new hushabye brand and the edj range are quite contemporary in

appearance but it was important to have a flexible brand and logo that would complement a more traditional product. The finished logo is contemporary and flexible and better reflects the tone of voice that hushabye now represents. ‘edj, for example has contemporary silicone badging while Natural Backcare’s silicon badges and embroidered handles are presented in muted tones, with hand tufting completing the premium look.’ Visit: www.hushabyebeds.co.uk

Swanglen is introducing a bedstead range The Swanglen name has been synonymous with headboards for decades. Now, for 2019, the brand is launching a range of bedsteads. The range has evolved from a process of research and development over many months. The principle was to develop a contemporary bedstead that would easily accommodate any headboard style in any swatch fabric. With 17 styles and 50 fabrics available, plus four foot options, there are more than 3,500 permutations. ‘The choice is huge but the base itself is incredibly simple. For Swanglen, R&D is driven by conversations with our

customers. There has been, for some time, a desire to supply something that has the ease of a divan base alongside the contemporary feel of a bedstead,’ says Peter Ridpath, Swanglen sales director. ‘At the same time, customers are looking for a wide range of styles and fabrics. That is how we developed this new range of bedsteads. The base features a drop-in platform, which eliminates the hassle associated with a slatted base. It is incredibly robust and delivers a much more consistent sleeping experience than slats. Everything is sent to the customer flat packed but

assembly time is minimal.’ Ridpath says the most important feature is choice. ‘Swanglen is known for not only the quality of finish but also the wide selection of headboard styles and fabrics. We needed to offer a solution that could deliver the widest choice. We have 17 styles, over 50 fabrics and four foot options: this pretty much guarantees there is something for everyone.’ As with all Swanglen products, the bedsteads are made to order, and as they are handmade in the UK, lead times are kept to a minimum. Sweet Dreams will debut a trio of divan collections Sweet Dreams launch three divan collections: Defined Edge Support, Handcrafted and Pocket Air Pure at the Bed Show. In addition, there will be fresh developments across the entire range. The company has seen increased interest and sales in foam-encapsulated beds and will launch Defined Edge Support in response. The collection will comprise pocket spring models offering high counts – including 1,500 and 2,000 pocket spring beds. Hand-stitching is the prominent feature for Handcrafted. This collection comprises three models, with pocket spring counts of 2,000, 1,500 and 1,000. All sport the side-stitch border, crafted

by hand, and a top layer of a natural filling such as wool, cashmere and silk. Pocket Air Pure is designed to appeal to the green consumer, with all four beds featuring flame-retardant chemical-free fabric to the mattress. This is expected to generate a high degree of interest from retailers with its strong purity marketing message. Pocket Air beds, with alternate rows of full and shortened springs leading to a ‘lighter than air’ feeling, have been a big success for Sweet Dreams. Three models will be introduced to the Royal Pillowtop collection: Emperor 4000, a memory foam bed featuring 3,000 pocket air and 1,000 mini springs; Crown 2000, with 1,000 springs to the

Grow sales

Add-on sales can help counter lower footfall To continuingly build success takes focus, hard work and drive. Protect-A-Bed, the award-winning specialist in mattress protection, continuously demonstrates these qualities in its success in helping retail partners significantly grow sales. Protect-A-Bed has also intensified its work through the Protect-A-Bed Platinum Club, to help its retail partners achieve excellence. ‘Protect-A-Bed is a specialist in the mattress protection category. Nobody else in the category has the same passion, drive and focus to grow sales and that’s why we are the leading global brand in healthy sleep. ‘We continuously build frameworks that are simple for retailers to implement in order to achieve extremely high attachment rates. Focus is key: lots of small improvements often lead to significant improvement in performance once compounded. Therefore, we know we can instantly increase sales within this category,’ says Simon Zamet, Protect-A-Bed ceo. ‘In a year where volume of customers has declined, focus has never been more important on each customer who walks through the shop door. We know we can help any store reach a 50% attachment rate or higher. As a business we are constantly looking to help drive sales for all of our retail partners. But specialist training is vital to unlock the sales potential and our Protect-A-Bed team are incredibly adaptive to support this in any retail environment,’ says Paul Lake,

Soul Spring

Soul time

Latexco has combined latex and pocket springs Latex foam components, PU foams and pocket springs manufacturer Latexco has introduced its latest concept: Soul Spring. This fuses the genuine comfort of latex and pocket springs in the purest, simplest way: the pocket spring unit is boxed inside the latex core. This easy-to-assemble concept results in a solid, 100% latex-encapsulated, pocket spring mattress, which can be compressed and rolled without any risk, thanks to the highly flexible latex frame. Fire-retardant polyurethane foams have been around for decades. The current technologies to make PU fire retardant are for the major part based on the use of melamine combined with halogen-containing components. The latter products especially are under more and more pressure because of the health risks associated with these types of compounds. Latexco has developed fire-retardant versions of the hyper-soft Flofom and viscoelastic Aerfom range that meet the British Standard Crib 5 criteria and

76

Interiors Monthly September 2019

do not contain any halogen or melamine components, but maintain the specific characteristics of specialty foams. In July the company appointed Lieven Vandendriessche as ceo. ‘Latexco is a family business, which allows us to really go for the long term. What’s more, I see a lot of potential for growth enabled by the recent investments. The bedding sector is in full transition, and I am convinced Latexco holds a unique position that will enables the company to emerge as a winner,’ says Vandendriessche. Vandendriessche has a Master’s degree in business economics and over 25 years’ experience in management positions in industrial companies including Deceuninck, Bekaert Deslee and Balta Group. In line with the company’s commitment to innovation, this range will feature a spectrum of new sleep technology and benefits, engineered to suit all sleepers. Seagreen mattress collection

Upcycled

Gallery Direct’s latest mattress uses former marine plastics Gallery Direct’s AW19 collection is its largest launch, featuring over 220 soft furnishings, more than 180 wall decor products, over 55 lighting pieces and over 25 made to order lines, with the upholstered ones offered in 58 new fabric options. The new products include additions to Gallery’s Luxe trend as well as its new Apartment Living Look, which features clean lines and strong finishes. On the made to order side, there are three new mattress collections: Luxury, Everynight and Seagreen, available in various spring counts and sizes. The Seagreen mattresses are made using Seaqual certified ticking, which is manufactured from upcycled marine plastics to help reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans. ‘Eight to 12million tons of plastic goes into our oceans each year, polluting them and posing a serious risk to marine life. We wanted to do our bit to help, so we developed our Seagreen collection. As well as the Seaqual ticking, the polyester fillings selected for the mattresses are also manufactured from recycled plastic. The quality and comfort of the mattresses, combined with the use of upcycled plastics and affordable prices, will appeal to customers who are looking for greener products that are kinder to the planet,’ says James Hudson, Gallery Direct sales and business development director. ‘The three new mattress collections, which are all handmade in the UK, were

82

Interiors Monthly September 2019

launched exclusively to Gallery clients at the @Home event held earlier this year at our Wiltshire manufacturing unit. All proved to be very popular and are already selling well for retailers who bought them. We are now looking forward to launching them to the general trade at the Bed Show.’ Four new ranges of upholstered bedsteads, ottomans and headboards are also being launched at the Bed Show. The four styles – Ashford, Doddington, Kempton and Milan – are offered in three sizes for all three product options. There is also a easy-open sofa bed, the Eastwood, which features a pocket sprung seat interior that folds out to give a pocket sprung bed, offering fantastic comfort. It is offered in three sizes with

arms and as an armless single. To complement the new beds and mattresses, the AW19 collection also includes a wide range of new bedding. The Cotton Lyocell bedlinen is made with a blend of cotton and lyocell, which work together to wick moisture away from the skin to help regulate body temperature. There is also a Brushed Bamboo range, created from a blend of cotton and bamboo viscose to give extremely durable bedlinen which is supremely soft on the skin. For its made to order upholstered items, Gallery Direct is launching seven fabric collections, each offered in a range of colourways, giving 58 new fabrics in total. Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Adjustamatic Best Bed Manufacturer (Adjustable)

‘We would like to thank the readers of Interiors Monthly for voting Adjustamatic as the UK’s Best Bed Manufacturer (Adjustable). It is probably because no-one understands the right sleep surface and adjustable or contour beds more than NHC Technology, the manufacturer of the Adjustamatic and Cysur brand beds and mattresses,’ says Gavin Douglas, NHC Technology sales development executive. ‘Cysur offers a complete range of adjustable beds, from simple slatted beds, unique ottoman storage adjustable beds, full smooth-action beds, a 15-year warranty, as well as wallhugging options. Each is made to order in its North Wales factory where nearly three generations of master craftsman have dedicated themselves to the

continual development of the perfect sleep systems. They use only the very best tools in the world: their hands. Every product they make is simply tailored to your specification. ‘The beds and mattresses have been created using medically proven technology and are designed to give your customers the best night’s sleep possible. With more than 50 years of experience in the adjustable bed market, we not only understand the manufacture of the best beds, but also the medical benefits of the correct posture when sleeping: helping to make your customers sleep better and wake healthier. Because all beds are made to order it means that almost any size is possible.’ Tel: 07568 337 084

INCREASE YOUR TURNOVER

In the always changing landscape of brick-and-mortar and online retail stores, it’s now more important than ever to communicate with your existing and prospective customers. In order to support this changing landscape, Ordorite are delighted to launch GROWHUB, an innovating new way to get your customers back in store, with the end goal of increasing your turnover. GROWHUB uses a digital science approach to show who has not come into the store in a given time frame, and prompts you to follow up and send personalised messaging via SMS, email, letter or newsletter to those customers. The system will provide you with industry guided material based on customer trends. Vouchers and loyalty schemes will also be available to entice customers back in. This powerful hub will give you key performance indicators such as the amount of turnover generated, number of quotes converted from a campaign or follow up, previous and current customer purchase trends, and customer data of whom has shown interest in your brand. We’re delighted to be showing this innovative new module at the January Furniture Show and will be giving free digital assessments to customers at the show.

Day to remember Textile designers customised Robin Day’s iconic 675 chair for charity Initiated by Case Furniture in partnership with Heal’s, 15 leading designers from the world of textile design paid tribute to one of Britain’s greatest designers by customising Robin Day’s iconic 675 chair. Each chair is a one-off design and has been specially made for the project. The bespoke designs, alongside the launch of two new fabric ranges by Case, formed

part of a three-week window display and in-store presentation at Heal’s flagship store on Tottenham Court Road, London in August. £4,980 was raised for the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation when the chairs were auctioned online. Participants included Eleanor Pritchard, Donna Wilson, Charlene Mullen, Cristian

major contribution to world design. With his wife, textile designer Lucienne Day, he pioneered a new modern idiom which transformed British design after World War II. Robin Day helped shape the post-war furniture industry by introducing new materials such as polypropylene and plywood to bring contemporary design to the wider public at affordable prices. He was convinced that good design could improve the quality of people’s lives. In 2014, Case Furniture launched an authentic new production of Robin Day’s 675 chair, originally designed in 1952. The continuing success of the chair lies in its elegant minimalist design which perfectly marries functionality, engineering and style. The Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation, a design education charity, was set up by the couple’s daughter Paula in 2012. As well as running an awards programme for design students, the foundation collaborates on educational projects and is developing a digital archive which is an important resource for exhibition curators, design historians and writers. Sixth sense

More than 80 exhibitors will take part

The Autumn Furniture Show is returning to Stoneleigh Park The Autumn Furniture Show is now firmly established on the UK furniture trade fair calendar, 2019 being the sixth successful year it has brought buyers and suppliers together. With more than 80 exhibitors filling two halls of over 8,500sqm of exhibition space, it is one of the largest UK furniture shows and has become a must-visit in many buyers’ diaries. Stoneleigh Park may not be well known in furniture circles, but with a central location that is very easily accessed by road, rail or air it provides busy retailers with an attractive option to visit and minimise time out of their businesses. Just nine miles off the M40 and 25 minutes from the M42 for those travelling by car, there is plenty of parking right next to the exhibition halls. No catching a bus or paying to park required. And for those travelling from further afield, the venue is only 25 minutes from Birmingham airport. The glass-walled, light-filled atrium provides excellent catering whether it’s

for a quick coffee and a meeting with key suppliers or a hot lunch and a chance to recharge the batteries. Multiple product categories are comprehensively covered. Upholstery, dining cabinet, beds, bedroom cabinet, occasional furniture and home accessories are all exhibited in depth by suppliers from the UK, mainland Europe and beyond. Suppliers approach the show with

great positivity: for them, it is a perfect opportunity to present product that can really make a difference on retailers’ floors in the upcoming Winter sale, and many will have special offers geared towards driving business for both parties. It is also an ideal time to whet everyone’s appetite for the rest of 2020 with sneak previews of product that will come to market next year. Visit: www.theautumnfurnitureshow.co.uk

WOOL

Wools of New Zealand beds in partnership with Hypnos

Telling the story Wools of New Zealand is highlighting the attributes of wool Wools of New Zealand is engaged in educating people about the many benefits of natural wool fibre through a myriad of activities and it is getting noticed. The company has been acknowledged for its long-standing contribution to the UK carpet and textile sector by Carpet Recycling UK at its annual conference in July, receiving the Longstanding Support award. The award specifically recognises Wools of New Zealand’s commitment to driving sustainability across the supply chain. The company’s on-going campaigning includes supporting many industry initiatives that teach the next generation of the industry. It is one of 10 companies that founded the Future Fashion Factory, a consortium of brands committed to transforming the British textile sector for the digital age. It has been given preferred material status by John Lewis which uses Laneve wool in its Open Spaces carpet ranges by Ulster Carpets and has launched a range of Wools of New Zealand beds in partnership with Hypnos. Wools of New Zealand has instigated a marketing campaign about the many benefits of its wool aimed at reminding sales people what a great product wool

96

Interiors Monthly September 2019

is. To simplify the message the many benefits of wool have been categorised as Style Friendly, People Friendly and Planet Friendly. The message to the consumer is simple: however, each message is backed up by extensive scientific research to give sales people confidence in promoting wool as a truly sustainable, naturally occurring fibre. The company has been recognised for this campaign by the Flooring Innovation Awards, winning in the marketing category. ‘We are experiencing a significant increase in demand for our traceable wool from brands looking for a trust

mark for their consumers. It has always been our mission to protect the planet and to provide consumers with a natural, sustainable, luxury fibre’, says Steven Parsons, Wools of New Zealand brand and business development manager. The company has a real focus on sustainability and innovation. Its partners are using its wool for EU Ecolabel, Cradle 2 Cradle and even GOTS certified products. Its newest fibre Glacial XT allows manufacturers the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of products by creating a more dye-efficient fibre through an eco-friendly process. SHOW GUIDE

Interfloor will highlight its latest POS Interfloor, the UK and Europe’s largest manufacturer of flooring accessories, prides itself on providing quality products that take newly installed floorcoverings to the next level in terms of performance, as well as creative POS materials which help drives sales for retailers. This year’s The Flooring Show gives retailers an excellent opportunity to find out more about Interfloor’s marketleading brands: Tredaire, Duralay, Gripperrods and Stikatak, and its range of marketing support materials, including eye-catching in-store POS displays as well as tools suitable for home visits. ‘With retail conditions the toughest they’ve been for some time, we recognise the importance of providing not only quality flooring products but also support which helps retailers and installers get the very best sale,’ says Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director. ‘Our goal is to add value to our customers, providing high-quality products that enable them to be successful. We are focused on providing our customers with better products, better brands and better service.’ New to the POS materials for Interfloor’s Gripperrods Premier profiles range is a branded estimator roll, ideal for use during home visits to show

customers how these high-quality metal profiles are the perfect finishing touch for their new flooring. The roll contains samples of the profiles, available in brushed steel, nickel and chrome finishes, which are suitable for joining floors of different materials, different heights and between doorways. A sample box and wall-hangings are also available. ‘Our Premier metal profiles have been a huge success with everyone since their launch. Our POS makes it very easy for retailers to upsell this luxury option whether they are selling in-store or at the customer’s home. We’ve been delighted with the feedback to date,’ says Cowley. Visitors to Interfloor’s stand will also have opportunities to see Decibel, a unique, noise-reducing application that

is designed to be buried within the sub-floor and is suitable for new-build and refurbishment projects. Already very popular in construction, Decibel products are certified and extensively tested to European standards. This innovative method can offer a saving in both cost and weight terms, whilst giving excellent acoustic benefits. Plus, visitors can view displays of Premium High Density underlays including the award-winning Tredaire Palladium; the latest addition to Interfloor’s ‘for the professionals’ Duralay brand; a range of LVT underlays; and a new Rug Anti-Kreep, suitable for use on carpets, ceramics, tiles, wood, laminates and vinyl. Cormar will show its latest launches Since its beginnings in 1956, Cormar Carpet Company has gone from strength to strength, its most recent landmark being the opening of a multi-millionpound distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead. Cormar is proud to be leading the way in the flooring industry as a family-run British company with a focus on high quality, affordable carpets. Cormar is currently enjoying success in the market with its recently launched Primo Grande and the re-coloured Primo

Choice. Southwold, a new loop pile carpet made from 100% New Zealand wool, was launched over the summer. Thanks to its highly efficient delivery service and superior level of customer care, along with a reputation for quality, Cormar Carpet Company remains one of the most popular carpet manufacturers in Britain. Since the brand was successfully relaunched last summer, it has seen significant increases in website traffic and social media engagement – both

of which have doubled over the last 12 months. And with a 5 Star rating on Trustpilot, it’s clear the Cormar brand is heading in the right direction and set for further growth. ‘We really do pride ourselves on continually producing new ranges and providing industry-leading delivery, excellent product quality and first-class customer service,’ says David Cormack, Cormar Carpet Company marketing director. Doubling up Furlong Flooring will again have two stands ‘Everyone at Furlong Flooring is looking forward to The Flooring Show in Harrogate. We’ve got so much to talk about that, yet again, we will be exhibiting on two stands in Hall A,’ says Mike Symonds, Furlong Flooring director. There will be a significantly different approach to Furlong Flooring's main stand this year, which will focus on all product strengths and will give visitors the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the company’s new branding and meet the team in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The main stand will be displaying key carpet products and taking centre stage will be Carefree Twist as well as the recently launched Revelation, both of which raise the bar on Furlong’s twist pile offering. The smooth flooring stand will also be showcasing Furlong Flooring’s extensive range of

The Flooring Show is a great opportunity to touch base with retailers and demonstrate our commitments to “First Choice Flooring for every room.” ‘We will also have some very special products to discuss with visitors, so be prepared,’ says Symonds. Keeping the peace Stroolmount has added another award to its portfolio ‘Stroolmount provides ingenious solutions to protect floors from damage by furniture – and we have built an envious reputation for innovation, professionalism and dedication. ‘It’s about trust. We do what we say, and have done since starting in 2005. So the trade first try us and then rely on us time and again. They know we’ve rigorously wear tested every product: if it has our seal of approval, they can trust it completely,’ says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘We’re the peace-keepers in a war zone between furniture and flooring. We smooth things over so everyone rubs along together nicely rather than grating on each other.’ Stroolmount’s first product was self-adhesive felt: even today, those Gill Finch, Stroolmount md, with the award

Interiors Monthly September 2019

table and chair felt pads cost as little as 1p each. For the trade, they’re vital to cushion chair-scraping and dampen down noise. While felt is a short-term solution, for long-lasting durability Stroolmount’s exclusive Quickclick hardwearing glides go the distance. Unsurprisingly it’s won many awards over the years: the different tile, carpet and wood/laminate glides are interchangeable to move smoothly over any flooring. Last month saw Stroolmount win the Interiors Monthly Awards Best Product Protection Provider (Flooring). ‘I want to thank everyone who voted for us; it shows that offering brilliant service and going the extra mile works,’ says Finch. After being contacted by furniture and flooring customers fed up with damage

from heavyweight recliner chairs and sofas, Stroolmount created Reclinerglides: another award-winning product. ‘If you try hefting recliners, the metal frames risk scarring wood flooring or ripping carpet. Recliner glides allow a recliner sofa to move with swan-like ease, but stay put when sitting down. ‘Flooring fitters love our Move-it Pads as they float like a magic carpet to help shift bulky furniture. See the video on our website where a heavy sideboard moves as easily as a supermarket trolley.’ If disaster strikes, Stroolmount can save the day. ‘Whether it’s scratch or a scrape, a dent or a dimple, our furniture and flooring repair kits fix marks perfectly for a fraction of the cost of French polishing.’ Visit: www.stroolmount.co.uk

DARREN ASH

DAN EVANS

Having been fitting for 37 years, I’m proud to say my company offers a niche service in which I relish the more complex jobs. Whilst striving to achieve my master fitter accreditations (four to date) I have made so many friends and pushed myself to be the best I can. I have reached all four finals and feel this is a massive achievement, particularly as the competition is open to the best fitters in the country. My passions do not just lie with fitting: I am also an involved family man with one teenage daughter Millie, and we have many varied interests that we all take part in. I would like to thank the sponsors, organisers and the people behind the scenes that make this competition possible.

I have worked in the flooring trade for over 17 years. I started alongside family members and realised this was what I wanted to pursue as my career. I now run my own successful business where I fit all kinds of floors, especially enjoying the challenge of bespoke designs, and ensuring customer specifications are met and fitted to the very highest level. My first FITA Course was in 2008, and it opened my mind to new and different ways of accomplishing my trade in the best way possible. I have undertaken numerous courses and achieved master fitter status in carpet, LVT and laminate, and pride myself on keeping up to date with current standards. Flooring is more than my job: it is my vocation.

Survival of the fitters

The show’s first two days will see the final of the Fitter of the Year (Carpet). Here are the finalists. Visit: www.nicfltd.org.uk DAN JONES

RICHARD LONG

I have been fitting carpets since 1989 in our family business, Peter Jones Carpets and Beds, in Wellington, Telford. I work alongside my brother Steve, who manages the shop while I go out fitting and delivering beds. I have been an NICF master fitter since 1991 and enjoy my trade to this day. In my spare time I enjoy classic cars and motorcycles as well as hobby engineering. This is the third time of entry into the FotY competition and I am excited to have reached the finals again.

It is such an honour and a privilege to be selected for this year’s FotY (Carpet) competition final, after reaching last year’s semi-final. It has been one of the most satisfying years I’ve had in the flooring industry. Passing my master fitter accreditation after completing FITA’s intermediate course with Steve Ramsden has been rewarding both personally and from a business point of view. I can’t forget where it all started though: as a 15-year-old lad, straight out of school, working for my dad, who has already told me how proud he is that I’ve reached this stage. Good luck to all the other finalists and may the best hands win!

JAMIE NELSON

TONY NEWALL

I’m delighted to have made the final for the second year and I’d like to thank all the sponsors for supporting the competition again. My wife and I have enjoyed a really busy year since last year’s finals with the fitting diary continually booked four months in advance. I am currently the only NICF master fitter of both carpet and LVT in Scotland, as well as Scotland’s only Floorskills master installer of carpet. A firm believer in continued training, I aim to attend at least one course per year, to improve my own skills and share my technique. Interest in the competition has been fantastic, with lots of customers asking about the process and many watching on the live stream. As always, I’d like to thank family and friends for their support.

I have been involved in flooring my whole life, working with my family’s firm, and went straight into the trade when I left school 25 years ago. I love the trade and the characters in it. I enjoy that every day is different and the satisfaction you achieve when a job is complete and you have another happy customer. I joined the NICF and last year entered the FotY competition as a challenge to myself and was really pleased to make it all the way to the final. To make the final again against some really good fitters is a huge personal achievement. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s planned for us in the final this year and can’t wait to get fitting.

18 companies will take part in the Autumn edition ‘New for this event will be an official reception fully manned throughout the exhibition to welcome visitors and direct them to the various locations with detailed maps. Every location will have an eye-catching wall or free-standing flag as attached, making this highly visible to all new visitors,’ says Andrew Mitchell, Long Eaton Guild chairman. ‘Due to the success of the prize draw introduced at the spring show, we will be repeating the opportunity for one lucky visitor to win a voucher for an overnight stay with dinner at Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’s Saisons Hotel and Restaurant in Oxfordshire.’ The Long Eaton Guild has donated the £500 fee due to Orbital Vision for

creating its new website to the St Michael’s Hospice in St Leonards, East Sussex in memory of former Oribital Vision director and Guild chairman Matt O’Flynn, who died in March. ‘Thank you so much for your overwhelmingly generous donation given in memory of Matt O’Flynn. What an incredible gift which will enable the hospice to continue to support many more people.

As you know, our services are provided free, and we are reliant on the kindness of people like you who give so generously in order for others to benefit from the support we offer. On behalf of the team at St Michael’s Hospice, thank you. Your generosity is heart-warming,’ says the hospice. Visit: www.longeatonguild.co.uk/ longpoint/

REVIEW

Kora, from Whitemeadow, is a large-scale sofa range presented in a contemporary retro feel with inspirations from the 1960s and 1970s. It features distinctive tufting to the seat and back cushions. It is available in XL large, large and small sofa, alongside a snuggler and chair.

Content by Conran’s Hoxton has tufted back cushions along with the featured metal ski foot. It features bolt-on arms for flexibility of access, as well as optional slot in headrests.

Whitemeadow’s Hayden offers a distinctive oversized contemporary shape, thanks to its proportions and arm design which interplay with the frame. It was presented in Tabby Platinum, a super soft, chunky weave with a slight lustre.

Whitemeadow’s Phoebe bed features a slim headboard, characterised by vertical fluting as the main detail. Presented initially with a low footboard option, it is available in three sizes and five wood finishes.
