INTERNATIONAL SALSA MAGAZINE EDITORIAL

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2010 ENGLISH

ESPAÑOL

HELLO FRIENDS,

HOLA AMIGOS,

I want to say welcome and thank you for signing up to receive the monthly publication, International Salsa Magazine. Printing has gone through a lot of changes since Johannes Gutenberg first invented the printing press. We believe that digital printing is the wave of the future and we are proud to be riding that futuristic wave. It is so convenient for everyone to get a magazine to you without any delay and at a fraction of what it would normally cost.

We try to print articles that may be of interest to musicians, dancers, promoters, and establishments that host Latin music events. We publish articles sent to us by our readers, and correspondents in both English and Spanish. We actively accept correspondents throughout the world. Our correspondents are the link to all the other members about what is happening in their respective areas. At times correspondents attend events and interview artists performing in their areas. They also tell us the hot spots for people to go dancing and special concerts.

The magazine also tries to inform on all webpages about salsa. We do not feel that others are our competition, but that they are our brothers in this effort to keep our art alive. There are also a great deal of free music available on line and we try to tell our readers about those stations.

Yours truly, Eduardo Guilarte - Editor

Saludos, Eduardo Guilarte – Editor

ISM 2010 August/September

A group of talented Cuban men with a career in music get together with an ambitious project: to provide top quality music to the Latin-music dancers of th e area and to make the top lists at local, and not so local radio stations. All of them with degrees from conservatories from Havana, Cuba, these men started playing in different orchestras with an impressive creative and technical quality. Back in Cuba these men were among the very few to record with Fania All Stars as LM Sobredosis, or Latin Music Sobredosis. They left the island in 1999 together and moved down to Mexico. They acquired a great deal of experience during their successful journey through Mexico and finally arrived at the US. Once in the US jazz came to interest these musicians, so they also formed a latin jazz quintet: The Havana Quintet. Their musical activities are not limited to gigs, but they are also music instructors, writers and arrangers. So, when in the mood for salsa, bachata, merengue and chachacha Team Havana is the choice.

ISM 2010 August / September

ROSARIO CARRASCO ARROYO: Gracias.

08

EDUARDO GUILARTE: ¿Tu nombre completo es…? ROSARIO CARRASCO ARROYO: Rosario Carrasco Arroyo.

EDUARDO GUILARTE: ¿Cuánto tiempo has trabajo en bienes raíces?

ISM 2010 August / September

ROSARIO CARRASCO ARROYO: Es Ran, The Pita Man

14

a Puerto Rico.

Bueno mira tienes…

EDUARDO GUILARTE: Es psiquiatra me dijiste…

ENTREVISTAS . INTERVIEWS |

EDUARDO GUILARTE: ¿A cuánto?

On September 26, 1996, over 3,500 people attended the unveiling of a bronze statue of Garcia in Pioneer Plaza. The one and a half ton statue is 14 feet high, the tallest historic monument in Texas. The imposing bronze sculpture is the work of John Houser, prominent El Paso artist, and son of Ivan Houser, who assisted with the carving of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The statue portrays Garcia wearing his Franciscan habit and sandals. A Guadalupe medallion hangs around his neck, with a crucifix and rosary located at his waist. There is a Manso Indian basket near his feet filled with mission grapes, representing the introduction of agriculture to the natives. The beam Fray Garcia holds is carved with flowers like the vigas of his mission.

As the first artwork greeting visitors to the El Paso Museum of Art, Luis Jimenez’s Vaquero is a fitting icon for the City of El Paso. Created in 1987-88, this fiberglass and steel armature with an acrylic urethane coating measures 199 x 114 x 67 in. “Vacquero,” a Spanish word for “cowboy” testifies to Mexico’s Spanish heritage, to El Paso’s large Mexican-American community and to the fact that Jimenez was born and raised in El Paso, the son of immigrants. Jimenez frequently selected his subjects for their cultural relevance and broad appeal, sometimes from the working-class, from the Mexican-American people or from Christian and Aztec mythologies. After studying art at the University of Texas in Austin and El Paso, Jimenez lived in New York City at the beginning of his career. Jimenez’s style and attitude brought him much success before other Chicano artists and today his public sculptures, such as Vaquero can be seen in cities throughout the United States.

Los Lagartos Statue 111 Mills Avenue El Paso, TX 79901 After an absence of more than 20 years, alligators are again the center of attention downtown. But don’t worry, these gators are harmless. They are part of artist Luis Jiménez’s latest sculpture, titled Plaza de los Lagartos, which means “Plaza of the Alligators.” The large fiberglass statue and fountain is located near the area where live alligators once roamed in the plaza’s pond. The statue brings back fond memories for many who visit the Plaza. Some older El Pasoans relate stories of childhood visits to the real gator pond in the 1950s and 1960s. Alligators occupied the pond in San Jacinto Plaza for some 80 years. The statue took Jiménez eight years to complete. It depicts four alligators seeming to lunge out from the fountain, two with their mouths agape, their sharp teeth bared as if ready to attack. Mist from the fountain keeps the gators looking moist and lifelike.

First, thank you very much, I am very happy to interview a band like La 33 with so much trajectory all over the world, it is amazing.

42

Talk to us about this house on La 33, where you guys got started? Well, this house is a very big House located in down town area, it has 500 square meters, is a house built in the thirties, and before was the house of some nuns, 14 years ago my mother bought this house. It has like 10 rooms, so my mother gave us one of those rooms and we started rehearsing some music there, nine years ago we decided to create a salsa project and it was born at the house. The house is located at 33rd street, so that is why the band is called la-33.

Tell us how did you guys decide to form a Salsa band? Eleven years ago I was studying in Canada, trying to be a great jazz or rock player. When I was there I realized that the main thing I should do was study my musical roots, so I decided to come back to Colombia and met my brother to create a Salsa band. In Colombia there is an important urban folkloric movement that my brother was going into, so I decide to go there and be part of that movement. How many members are there in La 33 and what do they play?

There are 12 musicians but there are almost 10 more people working for it. We have graphic designers, vjs, press staff, internet staff. The musicians: 1-Sergio Mejia: bass and leader 2- Santiago Mejia: piano player 3- Guillermo Celis: lead voice 4-david Cantillo: lead voice 5- Pablo Martinez: lead voice 6-Juan David Fernandez: timbal 7- Cipriano Rojas: congas 8- Diego Sanchez: bongo 9- Felipe Cardenas: tenor sax 10- Roland Nieto: trumpet 11- Jose Miguel Vega: trombone 12- Vladimir Romero: tromone and chorus.

Salsa is huge in Colombia, how are you guys different than the other salsa bands in Colombia? We are a band who has its roots in rock, and we are young musicians, you can see that when you see our show. It seems to be a rock band playing salsa. La 33 has performed in front of both Latin and European crowds, which one gives you more energy and why?

This is a photo of Carlos Caro, a very skilled and versatile player who is an in-demand session man in the Bay Area. Once when he was sitting in with Louie Romero’s Mazacote, Louie told a bunch of us that Caro “has got chops into next week!” Caro comes from Cuba— he left in 1992 at the age of 24. He had been in music school there, and in the military, where he played in the Army Band. Later, on bongó he toured and recorded with a group called Opus 13, which morphed into the internationally highly regarded Paulito y su Élite. He spent four years in Mexico before coming to the United States, where he played some significant concerts, backing such greats as Oscar D’Leon and Celia Cruz, as well as playing güiro with the Mexico City Philharmonic. He came to the U.S. in 1996, still learning English, which he points out is the lingua franca here of rehearsals and recording sessions, even among Latin musicians. With bassist Saúl Sierra and pianist/trumpeter Marco Díaz he formed the influential band Vissión Latina. The three have their own studio and publishing company. They are marketing their CDs through cdbaby.com and other outlets. Their latest, Sonando Como un Cañón is remarkably fresh. This photo was taken a few years ago, after the release of their (also great) first album, Kitikimbá Pa’ Tí, which they were performing at Santana Row, an upscale shopping area in San Jose. I like the picture for its Miami Vice pastel colors and clean lines. Carlos told me recently “It was a special moment, because my family was there, my daughter and my son were there—so probably I was looking at them.” 50

No More Jelly's Club Havana? Jelly's in San Francisco has been one of the epicenters of SF Latin music for the past 16 years. I have been a long time resident dj for the past 10 years. The reputation that the club enjoys is based on the Sunday "Club Havana" tardeadas that generated extraordinary salsa and cuban music from both the featured band and the dj much to the delight of both the dancer and the listener. Evidence of this phenomenon is on the Jelly's live music sampler that features Mazacote, Anthony Blea's Charanga, Fito Reinoso and others. The succession of fine talent has been handed down from the beginning when Linda Wosskow and radio dj Chata Gutierrez started the Sunday scene to when Ivette "La Coqui" Fuentes took over as dj to when I started alternating Sundays with La Coqui for many years. After La Coqui parted ways, I kept on the every other Sunday rotation with timba Dj's Walt Digz and Antonio. The club changed direction earlier this year: now Antonio and myself appear monthly and Walt Digz is there every other Sunday. Jelly's is located at a prime real estate spot at Pier 50 near Pac Bell Park which houses the Giants. The club has been a target of the Fire Department for quite some time and it's no secret that the Port Of SF has wanted Jelly's to move out. Perhaps to make room for a hotel and/or another upscale development. Now the Port of SF has given Jelly's a 30 day eviction notice after an unfortunate shooting that occurred outside the club after a small private party on a Friday evening. The entertainment commission and the police have cleared Jelly's of any involvement and wrong doing. However, the Port has used this incident as an excuse to give the club their eviction notice. There was a protest rumba this past Friday in front of the Port's offices. However the participation and support of the community was strong but light on numbers of people. Jelly's is now playing a chess game with the Port. Clarice Lacau, the owner of the club has obtained a lawyer who is in written communication with Port officials. The eviction deadline is up this week. It is feared that the city may shut down their doors which could be a significant loss and the

end of an era in the local salsa scene. Jelly's intends to stay open until the end. More to come.

Tempo Latino Part 1 Although Thursday, July 22nd was a rainy day in the small French town of Vic-Fezensac, the Tempo Latino festival office was a buzz of excitement. Executive producer Eric Duffau was busy coordinating his crew of paid and unpaid staff for the opening night festivities that featured the Ojos De Brujo concert in the small town's Plaza De Toros (bullfight stadium). Duffau, a gray haired dynamo with great wit and a sincere passion for Latin music greeted my friend, colleague and fellow dj Enrique Romero "El Molestoso" and myself as the technical crew mounted the huge state of the art lighting and sound system on the massive stage that was built inside of the stadium. His dedicated crew of staff and volunteers ran around tending to last minute details before the press conference that officially opened the 17th annual edition of Tempo Latino which ran from the 22nd through Sunday July 25th . Duffau and his crew are part of an non profit association that produces the festival which has featured the creme de la creme of salsa performers from all over the world. Vic-Fezensac was taken over during these four days by thousands of salsa music lovers. The dj duties at the after hours parties at La Conga were handled by Enrique "El Molestoso" on Friday and fellow Barcelonian DJ Jacoviche on Sunday. I handled the dj duties on opening night and on Saturday night following the Choco Orta/Grupo Fantasma show.

Tempo Latino Part 2 My time visiting Europe came and disappeared in a flash! But what a flash it was experiencing the Tempo Latino Festival in the picturesque small French town of Vic-Fezensac. This festival now in its 17th year was full of rumba, soul and most of all...Salsa! The biggest outdoor Salsa festival in all of Europe featured 4 days of music that satisfied the most die-hard fans of Salsa and Latin music. The big outdoor concerts at the Plaza

De Toros (bullfight arena) featured 2 prominent acts per night starting at 9:30 pm and going until 1 am. The "La Conga" nightspot was free to the public and featured a band and a dj starting around 12:30 am until closing time at 4:30 am. It was a large space that featured a stage, huge dance floor and a meadow with a sandy floor that could fit 4,000 folks. The festival also had smaller stages with free music that were outside of the Plaza De Toros. A large crafts fair leading from the entrance of the festival to the town featured everything from hats, jewelry to percussion instruments. Vic-Fezensac was alive with music, dancing and rumba! Most cafes and restaurants had their own dj's, small groups and dance instructors...what a scene! The colorful decorations in the festival area were made by the large crew of volunteers who help make Tempo Latino a unique festival.

Opening Night At Tempo Latino 2010! The lingering rain loomed over the Tempo Latino site cleared up by the time that the opening night festivities started. The World Music night kicked off the festival featuring the acclaimed Ojos De Brujo and pop singer/songwriter Sebastian Avispa. Avispa showed that he had a strong voice but his bland fusion of pop, middle eastern melodies and flamenco was tepid, banal and boring. He was clearly out of place at this festival. Ojos De Brujo had a dynamic opening number featuring their talented flamenco dancer Susana Medina providing the fireworks that framed Marina Abad's vocals. However, Ojos seemed musically sparse due to the absence of two of their key members: DJ Panki and percussionist Xavier Turull. Ojos lacked the spark that have made them such a sensation in past shows that I have seen. However, the action was hot and heavy at La Conga night spot with the allfemale French salsa band Yemaya La Banda who turned the crowd on their heads with their smokin' repertoire, campy costumes, dance routines and top notch musicianship. The crowd begged for more at the end of their two hour set. I opened and closed the evening at La Conga with my brand of explosive dance music that kept

International Salsa at Tempo Latino 2010 Salsa music took over the main stage of Tempo Latino in all of its international flavors on the course of the following 3 evenings. Friday night's opener, Calambuco impressed the packed Plaza De Toros crowd with their 70's influenced salsa dura sound from Colombia. This vibrant youthful ensemble led by pianist Andres Succar gave the crowd what they wanted: a fine show with a tight band, charismatic singers up-front and an irresistibly danceable sound. Ireland's Salsa Celtica headlined the evening with their unique fusion of traditional Irish music, afro cuban rhythms and salsa. Their instrumentation blended banjo, gaita, irish flute and guitars alongside congas, timbales, bass, piano and horn section. There were moments of explosive fire such as their live version of "El Agua De La Vida" but the novelty wore off for me by the end of the set. La Conga featured the AfroCaribbean group Grupo Kfe from Paris whose erratic set ranged from tasteful son montuno to tasteless covers of pop salsa hits. El Molestoso dropped a totally unpredictable but tasty dj set that ranged from bugaloo to classic salsa to a Paso Doble!

Sucursal SA started the show with a crowd pleasing set that featured original material from both their cd "Lo Nuestro" and their latest ep. The talented musicians of La Sucursal led by bassist/musical director Santiago Acevedo and vocalist Marcelo Rosero played smokin' salsa dura that had the crowd dancing and cheering for more. Their inventive version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" took everyone by surprise. For their encore, they invited el sonero Herman Olivera and flautist Mitch Frohman from Jimmy Bosch's band to join them on a rousing finale. Jimmy Bosch and his all star ensemble took the stage for a three hour set. Joining Bosch were heavyweights Olivera, trescero Nelson Gonzalez, bassist Mike Vinas, conguero Eddie Montalvo, timbalero Ralph Irrizary, pianist Arturo Ortiz, vocalist Wilito Otero, Frohman and a horn section that included members of La Excelencia and Mercadonegro. Drawing from a mixed repertoire of classic salsa and Bosch's own tunes, these excellent players and singers had plenty of room to improvise and stretch out. What a descarga from this elite group of great players! I was particularly impressed by the fluid piano work of Ortiz, the masterful tres playing of Gonzalez, the soneos of Olivera and the youthful Otero and the trombone mastery of Bosch! Went over to La Conga to catch up with the Barcelona double team of Orquesta

Sabor Y Son and DJ Jacoviche who were playing to the die-hards. Sabor Y Son had their moments but the real story was DJ Jacoviche (reminded me of a taller DJ Walt Digz in a cap and athletic suit) slammin' la salsa dura until 5 am when the police finally cut the power. What a fitting end to a Salsa festival such as Tempo Latino! Gracias Enrique, Eric, Louise, the great crew of Tempo Latino and the Antilla crew! I hope that I'll be back soon!! Saturday was a big day...not only was Puerto Rican diva Choco Orta headlining the festival with Austin's own party band Grupo Fantasma but I was also dj'ing my second night at Tempo Latino. Choco worked the press on Friday: singing at the press gatherings and wanting to be taken seriously as the heir to Celia Cruz's throne. I was only able to check out 3 songs but she clearly showed off her powerful singing voice backed by a swinging band with tight coro singers. Her old school repertoire from her recording "Ahora Mismo" included gems from the Machito and Celia songbook. She danced like a staggering woman possessed by voodoo. She was nervous and self concious on stage but turned into a dynamo as soon as the music started. I missed her fiery conga and timbales solos later in the set as I had to run to start my gig. Grupo Fantasma played a tremendous opening set..more

salsafied than when I saw them at South By Southwest. Fantasma was made up of an explosive brass section, screaming guitars, fine lead vocalists and played a set that included cumbia, funk, latin rock, bolero and descarga. Vocalist Jose Galeano took the place of two missing percussionists with fire and chops behind his percussion set of timbales, congas and bongos. Eric Duffau introduced their encore by stating "La Revelacion" to the crowd and revealed that Fantasma had earned themselves a headlining spot in the future. The crowd roared with approval. I started at La Conga earlier than expected because the place was nearly packed by 12:15 am! I tore it up on my first of 3 sets before our musical guests Zulu 9.30, a reggae band from Barcelona started. Zulu 9.30 struck a chord with the partying crowd although the salseros backstage were asking me when I was going to come on. The crowd was screaming for more at the end of their set. I had no choice but to play the best music that I felt at the moment. I started with Bobby Valentin's "Aqui No Me Quedo" and the rest was historythe entire La Conga dance floor was packed with dancers! What a great scene! I loved playing at Tempo Latino!

the crowd dancing and sweating until the wee hours of the morning! The mix was dead-on for both the dancers and the hard-to-please salseros. My first gig at Tempo Latino went great-Sabroso!

14th PUERTO RICO SALSA CONGRESS www.puertoricosalsacongress.com

In Spain the palace of the city of Granada was called the Alhambra. Here the Granada is the "palace" of Alhambra.

TROPICALIA CARAQUEÑA FEDERICO PACANINS

EL LIBRO DE LA SALSA MIGUEL RONDON

TODAS LA VOCES DE AMERICA RAFEL SALAZAR

CRUDE REFLECTIONS LOU DEMATTEIS

Crude Reflections/Cruda Realidad chronicles the human and environmental impact of oil drilling in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where the pollution is so extensive that medical experts currently predict thousands of deaths from cancer and the disappearance of five indigenous rainforest communities. Community leaders and doctors already report elevated rates of cancer in the region, as well as birth defects. Photographers Lou Dematteis and Kayana Szymczak have documented the physical and emotional reality of those affected by this toxic contamination, roughly 30 times greater than the more widely reported Exxon Valdez spill.

danzón - son - chachachá with maestro Roberto Borrell and dance partner Viola Gonzales

Un Trio Inseparable is a master class for all lovers of salsa, Latin dance, and Latin music, who want to learn and fully explore the three essential popular dance forms of Cuba from which all modern styles of salsa developed - the danzón, son, and chachachá. Leading the class is musician, dancer, and teacher extraordinaire Roberto Borrell, a Cuban gentleman who embodies his culture and has dedicated his life to perserving and passing on Cuba's rich traditions. Captivated by the music as a teenager, Roberto learned to dance and play music in the vibrant dance salons and social clubs of Havana in the early 1950's. See bio of Roberto Borrell. Over the past 20 years while residing the USA, Roberto has developed a comprehensive system of teaching the traditional popular dances of Cuba inspired by the manner in which he learned - the old school "open your eyes, open your ears" method. It’s a simple approach and yet you will be challenged to listen to your feet, to the music, and to become part of what Roberto calls the inseparable trio of the music, man, and woman. Accompanying Roberto is his favorite dance partner Viola Gonzales. Viola, along with her partner Garry Johnson, are professional dance teachers, and offer salsa classes in the San Francisco Bay Area. THE CLAVE MATRIX DAVID PEÑALOSA

It's already been pretty much established that America is a fast food nation. In fact, a book by Eric Schlosser with that exact title pretty much spells it all out. Many of us eat our own weight in hamburgers and fries every year, and you could fill a Volkswagen with the amount of grease that oozes its way though our bodies in a lifetime. But is America unique in this respect? I'm always reading articles about how the Chinese are becoming increasingly obese. Same with the Europeans...yes, even the culinarily snooty French. But it still raises a very interesting question: What does the world eat?

Over 550 pages of the best in contemporary and classic Salsa, Latin-Jazz and Brazilian music. Available in C, Bb and Eb versions. Detailed arrangements, exactly as recorded, to help your band play in authentic Latin styles. Including (on many tunes): • bass lines for each section • piano montunos • drum and percussion appendix • horn counter-lines Lyrics in Spanish, Portuguese and/or English. Sher Music Co.'s world-famous quality throughout. The only professional-level Latin fake book ever published!

For the first time in print, AfroCuban clave music receives an indepth analysis that shows, in a logical, step-by-step manner, precisely how all its rhythmic elements relate. For beginning students, performers, or music teachers, The Clave Matrix unlocks the rhythmic secrets of this extraordinary music. Over 300 pages, The Clave Matrix presents numerous examples and exercises (in standard and box notation), extensive chapter notes, bibliography, and a prodigious discography of 10 pages. Also included are 2 CDs with 117 tracks of examples.
