We try to print articles that may be of interest to musicians, dancers, promoters, and establishments that host Latin music events. We publish articles sent to us by our readers, and correspondents in both English and Spanish. We actively accept correspondents throughout the world. Our correspondents are the link to all the other members about what is happening in their respective areas. At times correspondents attend events and interview artists performing in their areas. They also tell us the hot spots for people to go dancing and special concerts. The magazine also tries to inform on all webpages about salsa. We do not feel that others are our competition, but that they are our brothers in this effort to keep our art alive. There are also a great deal of free music available on line and we try to tell our readers about those stations.

This magazine is different from a webpage, because since it is a monthly publication, you know that what you are reading is current events in the salsa world. We hope to make everyone associated with us proud to be a part of International Salsa Magazine. Fina Torres by Eduardo Guilarte
EDUARDO GUILARTE: Today is November 6th, 2010. I’m interviewing Film Director, Fina Torres, at the Sofitel Hotel, Redwood City, California. Fina, first let me ask you, as a film director what attracted you to present your film in the Latino Film Festival in Redwood City? FINA TORRES: I think the nature for this movie, for “Habana Eva,” is the Latino audiences. This particular one, the Redwood City Latino Film Festival had the generosity to invite the movie for the opening night, it is a very big privilege. So, I got this phone call from Sylvia Perel and she invited me and I immediately said yes. I thought it was important, you know, as a director, the most important thing is to show the movie, that the movie is seen, to communicate to an audience, so any occasion that you can communicate with an audience, you can show the movie to an audience and most if it is a Latino audience, it is very important for all of us. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Now, you won a very big award at the Cannes Film Festival with your previous film “Oriana”

FINA TORRES: Yes.

EDUARDO GUILARTE: And are you planning to take this film to Cannes? FINA TORRES: No, Oriana was a dramatic movie, not a Comedy; it was a very independent author movie, with a very strange treatment, with particular cinematographic language, a serious movie, it was good for those festivals like Cannes, Venice or Berlin, but “Habana Eva” is a comedy and comedies normally don’t apply to certain kinds of…you know, many people in the intelligentsia of the cinema consider that comedies are not serious enough. Remember the famous book of Aristotle that got lost, the book of the comedy, in that sense it is a very popular genre, so they consider it very commercial, but they don’t consider it as a serious genre.
EDUARDO GUILARTE: As I was watching your movie last night, I immediately went to Rómulo Gallegos, Mario Vargas Llosa, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I felt that you’ve captured that richness, to me that seems very rich, you know… FINA TORRES: Oh yes, of course, what nationality are you? You’re what? You’re a… EDUARDO GUILARTE: Latino-Gringo FINA TORRES: So, of course, this is the thing that we Latinos… we have all the keys, the knowledge, the instruments, the tools to decipher, to understand between the lines what is said, but many people who don’t have that reference, just see only one dimension of the story. All the romantic stories, with the girl that is in love with the boy…It’s a very thin line, so you can understand like the iceberg what is below the level of the water or you can just take the piece outside. EDUARDO GUILARTE: So another way of saying it is that it’s not that it’s not serious enough but you don’t think the international market has the capacity to comprehend the subtleties and the richness of it. FINA TORRES: The market is one thing, festivals are other. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Ok. FINA TORRES: Festivals and market sometimes they don’t go together. You see films that win in big festivals are not at all commercial successes. I think “Habana Eva” is a good film to market because it’s a comedy, that means entertainment, you know, people laugh, people cry, takes you on a ride. But this is why I think maybe for some kind of festivals they don’t see what is behind…maybe they take it literally to the first degree. I’m not sure if I’m being clear. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Yes. When did you finish shooting and do your post-production for “Habana Eva”?

EDUARDO GUILARTE: So, right now you’re the promotional trail. FINA TORRES: I’m in the promotional trail, absolutely! But I’m not going to stay long in the promotional trail because I’ve learned after four movies…like a child, you want to nurse it, then you want to take care of it until the end, but sometimes it takes more than a year and that is precious time to develop other projects.

FINA TORRES: We finished it on June, so like five months ago. Yeah! it is very recent…
You have to make a choice, or continue to nurse it until a grownup or to start to build up a baby. And I said to myself that I’m going to do this until the end of the year, until December. The last festival I’m going to go is the Habana Cuban Festival and that’s it. I’m not going to go to more festivals! EDUARDO GUILARTE: When Batista was overthrown on January 1st, 1959, with three large migrations out of Cuba, Miami, Puerto Rico and Venezuela… FINA TORRES: Yes, absolutely… EDUARDO GUILARTE: One of your leading characters is a Venezolano-Cubano, it’s always been recognized by a lot of people that Cuba led the way of entertainment in Latin America because it was the Las Vegas of the time. FINA TORRES: Absolutely… EDUARDO GUILARTE: And so when these Cubans who left who had been involved in the entertainment industry, they took that talent with them. One of them was Cisneros, he is a Venezolano-Cubano, and one of your leading characters is a Venezolano-Cubano. FINA TORRES: Yes! Absolutely… EDUARDO GUILARTE: Is that part of that tradition? FINA TORRES: It’s a reference to the…many rich families in Europe. High-middle class and rich families immigrated immediately after the revolution, they exiled, and they went away. And as you said, the majority went to Miami, a considerable part to Puerto Rico, and a lot to Venezuela. These Cubans that came to Venezuela and immediately integrated in the country, and they became Cuban-Venezuelan, and they build up very close ties to the Venezuelan society and they integrated and they are part, you know. I know Cisneros…for us they are Venezuelan, of course, with their Cuban origins. But I know that when Fidel withdrew from the power, as I said, a very strong wind of hope, a change started to blow, not only in the island, over the island, but also all the exiles around thinking “Ok, this is going to change, maybe this is the time we can recover our properties that we lost when we left.”
EDUARDO GUILARTE: The American Civil War did a lot of changes to the south as well and the ability or the thought that you can turn around and have your land titles respected. So, if I’m understanding you correctly part of what you present in the film is the whole concept and idea that there’s a lot of people who still hold on to the ideas that these worlds are homes, these worlds are lands, and we have a little title to them. FINA TORRES: Exactly, that’s a nature issue in the movie, but in a very subtle way and it starts at the beginning when she

So, this is why one of the subjects very parallel to the movie is this Venezuelan-Cuban family who seeing the changes send the boy to make an inventory, to see in what state their properties are, so they can plan already ahead what they are going to do with them once they recover their properties.

INTERVIEWS ENTREVISTAS finds the stone, and he comes to her and she says “That stone is mine because I saw it first,” and then she says to him, “But to whom does it belong? To the one who saw it first or to the one who needs it more?” So that is the big, big, moral question. There are people living in those properties for fifty years, three generations, these people went away, they are coming back, this house is mine. The people who are living there say “this house is mine, I have been living here for fifty years, and this house was mine before.” To whom belongs the property morally? To the one who needs it or to the one who possessed it once upon a time? And yet to both! So, how to decide? How to solve that equation?
so you can’t have private enterprise. This is why it is so funny, I think it was a little premonitory, the movie. EDUARDO GUILARTE: And then you deal with the issue of a lot of people who go and visit Cuba, come back fascinated with Cuba, and they say, “Well, you know, the only two places in Latin America where you don’t get kidnapped is Costa Rica and Cuba” FINA TORRES: Yeah, it is true. EDUARDO GUILARTE: They say there is literally no crime like all the other Latin American countries. FINA TORRES: That’s absolutely true. EDUARDO GUILARTE: And another topic is the “Jineteras” and your film has a way of introducing how the leading character, Eva, finds herself receiving money, you know, without intending to have that is the result. And also with the fact that a stranger comes from another land, and he is offering to take her out of the poor life style and then the other guy who is limited because he lives in a Cuban society and he can’t offer her anymore than that. FINA TORRES: Exactly, that’s very interesting! EDUARDO GUILARTE: I love the way you dealt with that.
EDUARDO GUILARTE: In Venezuela, Chavez has been expropriating haciendas, not by challenging the current ownership of somebody who just acquired it, but by going back to two or three generations and saying, “How did your grandfather get this?” “Did your grandfather steal it?” And they have been taking large haciendas in Venezuela on the basis. FINA TORRES: Yeah, they have two basis, they have that basis and the basis on the social needs, and that’s, you know, a very ambiguous territory because who determines if that hacienda was really productive or not? Who determines that? You know, it is very ambiguous, I think there is a lot of politics involved and when politics gets involved, it is very difficult to know the truth.

EDUARDO GUILARTE: One of the strong images in your movie is a billboard of Fidel Castro with the writing, “No power in the world shall subjugate us.” Do you want to comment why you put that image?.

FINA TORRES: As slogan it was made and it is a real quote, it is not a quote that I invented, I found that quote in a billboard in Cuba and I took a picture. When Fidel gives that quote, he is talking about his revolution and the Cuban people as revolutionary people. When Eva is looking at it and she sees the phrase, she is taking it individually for her. So, what I’m trying to say is that one phrase, you can apply for one thing, and then you can apply it for exactly the opposite, it has the same strength. When she takes that phrase, she says “Ah, no power can subjugate me” so I’m going to do…but in that moment it was forbidden in Cuba. Now, is open since August 1st, the rules changed, the law changed and people now can open little businesses, private little businesses. But when I shot the movie two years ago it was totally forbidden, because it is a communist country,
FINA TORRES: There are two moments in the movie that still move me very much… that I have these strong feelings. One is when she sees the billboard with the quote and the way she takes it in and how she reacts to it…she starts making her own business, which was forbidden. And the other one is when she takes the money after having that night at the hotel that she doubts, she refuses at the beginning and then gets dressed and then she sees it and then she takes it. I loved those moments because they are real…meaning that normally in an American movie she would not have touched the money because she is not a whore. It is about dignity, you know. The reality in Cuba is that you have so many economical difficulties that… it’s gone, it’s there, it doesn’t put you better or not better, who is going to take it? The waitress! The one who is going to clean the room? You do not do that; it is like if someone is thirsty, you have water and you don’t touch it because it comes from whatever. That moment was very interesting and what is more interesting is the anecdote. When I wrote the script, she didn’t take the money, she saw the money and she left leaving the money there because she was not a whore. And when we were preparing the movie you make readings with all the crew, the Cuban crew, we were all there with all the Cuban crew complete reading scene by scene, when we got to that scene it was a revolt, all the Cubans, men and women said that is phony baloney, that never happened here, that is not believable, she would take the money whatever she is, she would take the money, that is not a Cuban character. And I said, “Wow, you’re so right, this is my stupid American moralist, Puritanism, you know. I am so used now to writing for Americans, but I changed it. I just adored them for that. I think that makes the character so much interesting. EDUARDO GUILARTE: A good movie is a movie that is written by a talented writer and that makes the movie good. However lousy acting can ruin the movie, the quality of the actors is superb! Tell me about how you got to these actors because she is very unique and I have never heard of her before. FINA TORRES: It’s her first movie, she is Venezuelan, she is not Cuban, she really managed to make believe she is Cuban, don’t you think so? EDUARDO GUILARTE: Yes, yes, she did.

EDUARDO GUILARTE: She has this twisted lip. FINA TORRES: Yes, and she is a little bit clumsy sometimes, she is more girlish, but she has the potential to become this sexy, completely assumed young woman. EDUARDO GUILARTE: You incorporated a “muerto” Teresa into the movie. And yet you evaded “Santeria” (laughs) FINA TORRES: I have done two movies with “Santeria” already. This is why I don’t need to do them anymore.
demand, why would you pay to have this channel or that channel that is going to repeat the same movie the whole month? When you can turn around and have a whole database of movies…So, filmmaking as a business, you had an experience before with major films, how do you see film making as an investment? FINA TORRES: Well, it is changing so fast that it is hard to follow. I think it is a risky business because you sell ideas, you invest in an idea, but you really never know how that idea is going to come up. You can cover yourself as they do. Now for an instance any idea of script, any project, to approve it…first it goes to marketing, and if marketing says yes, we can manage to build up a promotional line. If it is easy to market, then it is easy to get green light, if not, no way!
In my second movie, I had a character who was a “brujo santero” very funny and salsero, by the way, he was a real salsero, a beautiful, black man, Venezuelan. And he played the role of a “brujo bantú” and he was great. He was very funny in that movie because it was not like a contest but a confrontation between the techniques of a “brujo bantú” and a psychoanalyst, and they exchanged methods, it was very funny, that’s in the second.
It is more and more a business, very calculated but you know what? You can calculate and make all your calculations…these actors…two movies that were very successful so this is…bla bla bla and it doesn’t guarantee it is going to work, and then a movie that is completely against all odds, no actors, a subject that when you read it is too strange, suddenly is a big hit, it is still like a poker, it is not that easy!
In the third movie, “Woman on top,” that was shot in Brazil was all about “Candomblé” because it was all about

FINA TORRES: It took a lot of prep, but I think the most important thing when I chose her is because she had the physical that I thought it was perfect for the character, very sweet, very innocent, very naïve, very young.
FINA TORRES: It’s like playing poker in a way, of course you can cover yourself up, there are very good poker players…I think that is what it makes it so passionate… EDUARDO GUILARTE: What about private investors from the investor’s perspective? FINA TORRES: Do you know a lot of private investors in cinema? I don’t, it is always state funding of course you have the big, big companies in United States, like the studios, but it is a whole different ball of games because they not only have the movie, but what they call the around the movie, the gadgets.
“Yemanjá” who was her goddess; “Yemanjá” was really a character of the movie. EDUARDO GUILARTE: So, you purposely evaded the “Santeria” subject. FINA TORRES: Not even purposely, I think that my mind didn’t even register it; it was not interesting for me anymore. EDUARDO GUILARTE: But you brought in the “muerta” (laughs)
In our every day culture we talked to the dead, even I had an uncle who visited my grandfather who was dead many years ago and talked to the phone with him, it is something that we have in our culture, and so for me that is why it was so natural for that to happen. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Netflix is changing film in many different ways to marketing, etc... Premiere channels are not as in
FINA TORRES: You see, it is amazing, and that is a big success of these days, it is complicated, but we are talking about cinema in that big industrial way. There are two types of cinema: there are the independent movies, like the ones we make, and then the big, big, big, very industrial business, when movies are like cars. It is a product, studied, and prospected as a product that you have to sell, and you have to invest this and take out this, all the crazy people like me that do independent movies, and many, many others that are just like kamikazes, that spend five years looking for some minimal funding, financing to get the project moving on, and then they do it like this and it takes here to put together, and thanks to festivals like yours, like this festival or the Latino Film Festival or many other festivals, they start coming out and they have the chance to suddenly come into the big… to the main stream that is a total risk. You do not have any guarantee, you work with actors who nobody knows, you work with strange stories that they don’t guarantee you people are going to like it or not, you have everything against what you can imagine.

FINA TORRES: “La muerte” is not “Santeria.” “La muerte” is a very typical traditional Latin American idiosyncrasy; you see that in Juan Rulfo, Garcia Marquez, you see that in many writers.
EDUARDO GUILARTE: I sold a series to Venezuela, Mazinger Z, I took it down there and I thought it was “Oh, a cartoon series,” and I had a cousin who was working for “Radio Caracas Televisión” He set up the interview, so the executives could see it, and it was the first time that I understood that TV box is a cash register. And it wasn’t the TV series that was worth anything, it was the merchandising around it.

In thirty years I have done four movies, I have developed like thirty projects, and I only made four movies…you can see how hard it is! And the most fascinating story about this is you make a movie. For example, my first movie “Oriana” got twelve international awards, starting with the Golden Camera in Cannes…everybody could think, “Well, ok she is done, she will do like this…” To do my second movie it took me seven years! EDUARDO GUILARTE: After all those awards? FINA TORRES: After all those awards…when I started the second movie it was like starting from scratch again! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Let me ask you this, doesn’t it have to do also with the ability? Because you can be a terrific director but maybe you are a lousy saleswoman! FINA TORRES: Yes, I am (laughs) EDUARDO GUILARTE: I mean a good salesman can sell ice cubs to the Eskimos. FINA TORRES: Absolutely, you’re right! I am not a career woman and I have very little social skills. I am a terrible salesman, I hate to talk about myself, I hate to go and sell myself. I see people do it and it sounds so natural, they come and they say, “Yes, you know they gave me this award and that award…” It sounds so natural! And I say, “Wow, I can do that.” At the moment I do that, I feel they are going to say, “Oh, she is so pretentious and so…” I have this very low profile and this doesn’t help in the movie business. But to tell you the truth, in spite of that I am not a good saleswoman; it is very, very hard! EDUARDO GUILARTE: I found you very humble yesterday with all your success and everything. FINA TORRES: I’m very humble, it’s true. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Yeah, I picked that up immediately. FINA TORRES: I was brought like that. My family and my grandfather… he was a great man, extremely humble, so that’s the way we were brought up. We were told that people who boast, there is a phrase we say in Spanish, my mother always said it to me “Dime de lo que hablas y te dire de lo que careces” “Tell me what you boast about and I will tell you what you lack of.”

So that’s an education, and maybe it is not good in this society of capitalism because here everything is about selling, selling, selling, selling, so you repeat, repeat, repeat and people start to believe it! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Fina, I look at the necessity for the film industry to provide new product every week. Here in all these theaters across the country in every single community and they need fresh product and the prices that they charge, I say to myself, “How can someone afford to send the kids to the movies?” I mean at an average price of ten dollars a ticket, and then the popcorn being incredibly high, you have to give your kid a one hundred dollar bill to go to the movies, but yet there is this big demand so it is seen as a very lucrative business. Look at what Disney did, I heard it say that Antonio Banderas made more as the voice of Puss in Boots than he did in all of his 60 plus films that he made. FINA TORRES: Amazing! EDUARDO GUILARTE: And the movie has like a growth close to a billion dollars!
FINA TORRES: It’s pure capitalism, now they prefer to invest 10 many millions of dollars in a movie, two hundred million, three
hundred million, and guarantee completely all the marketing with another hundred million dollars and collect a billion dollar, than to do smaller movies, like twenty million, thirty million. The effort to do, let’s say five, twenty million dollars movie, it’s a hundred million, they can collect maybe thirty million, maybe forty million, if it is a success maybe eighty million, you make five movies with all the risk that represents and you can get back maybe a growth of three hundred million. If you do one big movie like Shrek or Avatar or whatever, it costs two hundred million; you invest one hundred million in marketing and then you get a billion, only with one product, you triple it, so the tendency now is making less movies but bigger movies. So, the industry shrinks, shrinks, shrinks, instead of having two thousand people working or five thousand people working, you only have…everything gets very reduced and you can’t compete with that kind of marketing! EDUARDO GUILARTE: I know, but then it is like saying that you’re going to reduce the menu to two or three items on the menu, as supposed to giving a wide variety of choices! FINA TORRES: Yeah, that’s the way it is, that´s pure capitalism, bigger capital, bigger investment, makes bigger growth so the little ones get squeezed. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Everyone who is a film fanatic, etc, goes and looks up IMBD, the internet movie database, etc. to see how much money a movie made or lost…your films have made money? Have they lost money? FINA TORRES: None of them has lost money! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Good. FINA TORRES: But they have not made gorgeous either. In “Oriana”, the investment was four hundred thousand dollars
EDUARDO GUILARTE: A loss… FINA TORRES: None of them! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Good for you! What did it cost to make “Habana Eva”? FINA TORRES: A million and a half. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Wow! Terrific! Was this because it was a cheaper budget doing it in Cuba? FINA TORRES: Yes, because it was made in Venezuela and Cuba. If you pay in “bolivares” to the official change, you can say “Oh, it may cost like two million dollars.” But if it is what they call the fluent change or the black, is like one million five so between one million five and two million. We shot eleven weeks, it was a long shot! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Where did you do most of your shooting? Habana? FINA TORRES: Yeah! Habana, we only shot two scenes in Venezuela. EDUARDO GUILARTE: What were those? FINA TORRES: The scene when the Venezuelan man was with the family, that was in Caracas, and the hotel room, that is in Cuba, but we shot it in Caracas, when she wakes up. EDUARDO GUILARTE: What about the music of the movie? You had a lot of Charanga. FINA TORRES: I wanted to use… EDUARDO GUILARTE: Not the old traditional salsa. FINA TORRES: No, I wanted to use really very contemporary… what young people listen in Cuba now, that is a lot of reggaeton, cubaton…so I thought it was really interesting because I really wanted to portray the youth as it is today. EDUARDO GUILARTE: The music was there I could hear it all the way through, very well done, written very beautifully, but you didn’t bring out any bands or anything, who were the people you chose? Why did you choose them? FINA TORRES: The one who was most in the movie was Descemer Bueno, he is a Cuban, he had this famous group called “Yerba Buena” then they separated. I have one song from “Yerba Buena” and several of Descemer, he is a fantastic musician.
EDUARDO GUILARTE: But you didn’t go with the traditional guys like “Maracas,” like “Isaac Delgado” in a way is kind of American’s ordering Chinese food, American’s ordering Chinese food know how to order the fried rice (laughs). FINA TORRES: That was something I didn’t really want to do. I didn’t want any salsa on the movie. I love salsa, I adore salsa, I love to dance salsa, but it was like too on the nose, like Cuba equals Salsa, there have been so many movies about
This is a new wave in Cuba with these new rhythms and some fusions; I really wanted to explore that. EDUARDO GUILARTE: I think you did a fantastic job with the music, it moves with the new times. FINA TORRES: I wanted to give a very strong image on Contemporary Cuba like a kind of “avant-garde” something that we don’t know that it is moving so fast. We think Cuba is traditional, when you meet a social club…that image is part of their history and culture, but there is an incredible new wave of musicians, and young people that are completely out there in another mood. I thought that was fascinating! EDUARDO GUILARTE: When you wanted to film in Cuba as a Venezuelan filmmaker, I imagine it was a lot easier than if you were American. FINA TORRES: That question is difficult because I am not an American, so I do not know how Americans film in Cuba; the Americans that go to Cuba are Americans who like Cuba…were accepted in Cuba, so they have a lot of support and are welcomed! And an American who does not like Cuba would never go to Cuba, and if he goes I do not think he won’t be well received, but I am Venezuelan, and you know that now Venezuela and Cuba have a very close relationship, and the cinema has special arrangements, it was absolutely very easy for me, was not problem at all and I did not suffer any kind of censorship. EDUARDO GUILARTE: So you were well received in Cuba? FINA TORRES: Not well received, normally received, naturally, they are very professional, the people who work in cinema in Cuba is truly professional, they have a great tradition of cinema. EDUARDO GUILARTE: When I was in St. Petersburg, I went to take pictures at the Hermitage and there you pay something extra in order to be able to photograph, all of the three million pieces of art that are there, and you had a scene where the Venezuelan is taking photographs of the architecture, this man jumps in front of him and says “No Fotos” And then she comes back and says “Que clase de impresión se va a llevar de nosotros”

And then I had a lot of reggeaton, one of them is Eddie K and “La Charanga” they made a song, when they are in the party, they are singing, not “La Charanga” but Eddie K. I had some very, very simple groups of reggeaton that I found on the streets, you know, young boys…I have some very classic songs of Carlos Varela, who is fantastic…there are like 24 songs in the movie, a lot. Of course I don’t remember all of them now.

FINA TORRES: It is the same story, one of the entries of money in Cuba is tourism, and some people have a lot of difficulties so when they see tourists taking pictures, they try to take advantage, that’s a joke, “You can’t take a picture, and you have to pay” He doesn’t have the right to do that, it is just a building, maybe nobody lives there, but he sees the tourist and he says “I’m going to take advantage.” EDUARDO GUILARTE: And it is the old fight the photographer has about who owns the image or what I am free to photograph. FINA TORRES: Absolutely! That happened to me once in Cuba and in other places, in Mexico, you’re going to take a picture, they say “No, no, you have to pay to take a picture.” I know it is phony baloney, but you know, you just pay!

EDUARDO GUILARTE: We develop ideas as we grow and our ideas change along the way, at this point in your life, how do you see what you have done?

FINA TORRES: That’s a difficult question, in one hand I think I have been lucky at least to have done four movies, because it is not simple. And in the other hand, I would like to have done at least eight! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Frank Sinatra said it in his song “I did it my way.” What about Fina? FINA TORRES: I would like Frank Sinatra to teach me what was his way that he was very successful. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Are you happy with yourself? FINA TORRES: Yes, I only regret what I did not do, but I am
very happy with what I have done. TONi MENDOZA: One of the scenes that called my attention was when she decided to be with Jorge and the other guy, is this something new amongst young people in Cuba? Is it part of the new culture? FINA TORRES: It is a metaphor; it is not like if in Cuba today people can do that because this is not a realistic movie, it is a fiction, it is a metaphor, it means there are two systems that seem completely opposite. That is socialism and capitalism, but we have to consider that each proposal has great politics and awful defects, so why can’t we invent a third way and get the best of the socialism proposal and the best of the capitalism proposal, the liberalism proposal... have sense of community, social commitments, education guarantee and health care for everyone. That is a very socialist way! Having responsibility for the community, but at the same time have liberty to choose, liberty to choose your way, have space as individual and progress and choice, have all your human rights respected, and have some competition that is good. Both systems when they get to the extreme are terrible, but both of them have very interesting proposals, why cannot we build a society with the best of both? EDUARDO GUILARTE: I think your line was, “No, I’m not going to be manipulated” It is either both or none. FINA TORRES: Yeah! It was very funny because at the beginning it was like “It is impossible, you can’t say that…It is not going to work.” And I said, “I know it is daring, I know it is wild, but it is the way it has to be.”

EDUARDO GUILARTE: They are primarily Cuban actors? FINA TORRES: Yeah! There are only four Venezuelan actors EDUARDO GUILARTE: When you went to find your cast, what did you do? Fly to Cuba? Find actors? FINA TORRES: It is very simple…there were two companies producing one of them acts as a normal production company, which is universal, you get there, they start to prepare, they hire a casting director, you work with the casting director, you give the indications, then they go all around the island. There are many actors, there are theaters, there are many film televisions, they convoke and they start choosing, and then they make a proposal, “Ok, we have eight people to propose for this role,” “You see them, Mmm yes, no, I like these three…or none, this is not at all” It is exactly as here! EDUARDO GUILARTE: Villa del Cine is like a Venezuelan studio right?
FINA TORRES: No, I have lived in Paris for 28 years, and then I went to Los Angeles, and lived in Mexico for about two years, then I came back to Los Angeles. TONI MENDOZA: Do you have plans to shoot in Mexico? FINA TORRES: Yes, I would love to; I would really like to shoot in Mexico, I love Mexico, I think it is a beautiful country. EDUARDO GUILARTE: My thought was that if you were in Mexico, it would have been easier to get to Cuba, back and forth while you were filming. FINA TORRES: It is very easy to get to Cuba from Venezuela, back and forth. We have three hours and we have this very tied relationship so it is easy to go from Venezuela to Cuba and from Mexico to Cuba too. EDUARDO GUILARTE: Fina, I want to thank you for this interview and your time, and I hope it has been a good interview for you.
The Villa del Cine is a production company. They are near Caracas, in Guarenas. They have two or three studios, they have machines, they have cameras, and they have the entire post-production infrastructure.
FINA TORRES: It has been a great interview, very good. Are you a journalist?
Now, many first type directors are developing and working with the Villa, but this year there was an incredible boom at the Venezuelan cinema, four films got very successful with the audiences, four Venezuelan films, they won awards, so everybody is very excited because before in Venezuela audiences didn’t like so much Venezuelan movies, so they were not very successful!
FINA TORRES: Oh! That’s very good; I think journalists should study that, private investigation.
EDUARDO GUILARTE: I am a private investigator.

My first memories of David Calzado y La Charanga Habanera are from the year 2000, the last time they came to the San Francisco Bay Area. I saw them in San Jose, Berkeley and Santa Cruz. One local musician complained, “They’re eliminating melody!’ The irony was that when he said it, he was in line to see the band for the second time. Their impact on the Bay Area music scene was palpable.

Of course La Charanga did not entirely eliminate melody, but they did chant lyrics instead of singing, something akin to rap-

ping. What I liked in those shows was La Charanga’s dance moves on stage. I had been raised on James Brown, Sly Stone and Tower of Power, and always loved the physical aspect of their shows. La Charanga Habanera is not a charanga band—there’s no flute or violins, and they don’t play the charanga rhythms. Their timing and structure is Timba, the music that young, well-educated Cuban musicians put together in the 1990s and continue to play today. La Charanga gained notoriety in 1998, when they played a youth festival in Havana with their sexy

act, broadcast by Cuban state TV. They offended the people in charge of the show, and halfway through their signal was cut. They were then suspended from performing or recording for six months. Members of the band formed their own bands, and after the suspension the leader of La Charanga, David Calzado, put together another version of the group which was also phenomenally good, and successful by Cuban standards. Their latest album is La Carátula, and one of the songs, with the lyric “You’re grooving in Miami

while I’m grooving in Havana” is now heard everywhere in Cuba. They came to San Francisco twice this summer and I photographed them on August 21 at Yoshi’s San Francisco. A producer I know complained that most of the Timba bands that came around the Bay Area in the recent period were “boy bands,” but as Jon Pareles pointed out in an excellent review in The New York Times, the band around Calzado consists of young men of real musical ability, not just cuteness. If you get a chance, see this band, they’re not likely to disappoint.

INTERVIEWS ENTREVISTAS ¿Formaste parte de alguna otra orquesta antes de empezar con tu propia orquesta? Si, si, claro muchas, mis inicios fueron en bandas como CALI SABOR, SOL NACIENTE, ORQUESTA DE UNILBRE, ORQUESTA DE LA POLICIA, en el año 1997, después paso a “LOS GOMELOS” bajo el sello SONY MUSIC, The Merengue Band, y la última con la que participe fue MATECANA, hasta el 2001, antes de viajar a Europa.
- Empecemos por el principio, ¿dónde naciste? Soy nacido en Cali.
- ¿A qué edad comienzas a darte cuenta de la pasión que sientes por la música? Desde muy temprana edad comienzo a dar muestras de mi inclinación por la música, a la edad de 15 años participo en el programa “SONEROS 4” que para la época daba oportunidad a cantantes aficionados de mostrar su talento en TV, en la región del Valle Del Cauca.
- ¿Cómo tomaron tus padres la idea que te conviertas en músico? (Risas) Con un grito en el aire, pues para mi mala suerte en mi familia no había músicos, a pesar de ser muy buenos para escuchar música, siempre mi madre trato de desviarme en otras cosas, pero siempre he dicho que el que nace para la música nace y punto.

- Cuéntame, ¿Cómo fue la primera vez que estuviste frente a un público? ¿Cómo viviste esa experiencia?

Como te comentaba anteriormente mi primera vez frente a un público FUERTE, fue a los 15 años en “SONEROS 4”, fue tenaz pues no sólo era el público sino las cámaras y el público de la TV, y pues todos los participantes llevaban barras de amigos y yo estaba solo (risas) Eso se dio a raíz de que mi familia veía muy imposible mis logros como cantante y más para la época donde apenas empezaba. Sentí un nervio total, la garganta totalmente seca, un poco de inseguridad durante los primeros dos minutos pero al final del tema me agrande y saque mi talento, el cual logró que fuera llamado inmediatamente por orquestas locales de Cali a audicionar.
- Has dejado tu tierra natal para vivir en Inglaterra, ¿cuáles fueron las razones que te llevaron a tomar esta decisión? Bueno fue algo un poco repentino, sale una gira con una agrupación con la cual viajo a Italia, España e Inglaterra, y es finalmente dónde me decido a radicar, muy dura decisión en su momento, pero ahora siento que valió la pena, pues di nacimiento a un proyecto que ahora tiene mucha fuerza en el Reino Unido, ROBIN DEL CASTILLO.
- ¿Te gusta vivir en Londres? Si, es mi segundo hogar, vivo aquí y todo gira en torno a Londres de momento, aunque extraño y amo mucho mi bella Colombia, dónde deseo tener la oportunidad de mostrar mi trabajo musical, y dónde volveré a radicar en su momento.
- Has viajado por diferentes partes del mundo, diferentes países… ¿Cuál es el público que mejor te ha recibido? Sabemos que los latinos tienen un acercamiento más pasional, ¿Cómo es el público europeo? Gracias a Dios he tenido la oportunidad de viajar a muchos países, tales como DUBAI, CHINA, SUECIA, SUIZA, ITALIA, ESPAÑA, PORTUGAL, BRUSELAS, FRANCIA, HOLANDA, INGLATERRA, entre otros.

Definitivamente Los latinos somos 100% pasionales en todo y más cuando estamos fuera de nuestro país, no importa de que parte seamos de sur, o Centroamérica, la pasión en general nos caracteriza y son un muy buen público a la hora de asistir a un concierto. El público europeo me sorprendió, pues aunque no parezca, son muy buenos analíticos de la salsa como tal, buenos bailarines, y tanto que existen muchos músicos europeos que se han metido en la movida de la salsa y que han cogido mucha ventaja de nuestra música.
- ¿Qué nos podes contar sobre tu álbum Pa’ Mi Tierra? ¿Dónde se puede conseguir este CD?
Cada uno de mis temas tiene una historia, en excepción de “SHE’S THE ONE” que es un tema de rumba total y sin tanta profundidad sentimental como los otros temas.
-¿Qué proyectos tienes a corto plazo? Te cuento…acabo de terminar dos videos más de mi álbum “Pa’ Mi Tierra”. “She’s the one” y “Muere de Pena”, “Aquella Mujer” y seguimos con dos más,”Ya no puedo amarte” y otro que aún no se decide cual es.

La verdad es que todos los públicos son diferentes, unos muy abiertos, otros un poco retraídos, pero en general me siento muy agradecido por que donde he ido me han tratado súper bien y sobre todo han recibido mi música y mi show con gran entusiasmo.
Tengo planes de viajar a Colombia a promocionar fuertemente mi tema “Ya no puedo Amarte”, el cual empieza a sonar poco a poco en emisoras como la Kalle, Planeta, El Sol, y la Z, que abren puertas a mi producto. Una vez que termine el video “Ya no puedo Amarte” se enviará para reforzar bien el trabajo publicitario en Colombia. El 2011 será un año fuerte de promoción en Colombia si Dios lo permite!

Lo titule PA’ MI TIERRA porque mi primera composición como tal fue ese tema PA’ MI TIERRA, que nació un 31 de diciembre en medio de una soledad única que me dio el placer de plasmar en esta letra la emotividad de mostrarle al mundo que mi Colombia es mucho más de lo que mucha gente en el exterior piensa.

Ya son 25 años tocando salsa, como ha evolucionado Batisto Coco desde sus principios a nivel musical?
Los Batisto Coco han hecho un recorrido muy símil a otros grupos de salsa, es decir, antes, tocando las canciones de grandes artistas como Ruben Blades , Tito Puente, Fania, Machito, etcétera, después, empezando a escribir las primeras canciones originales en italiano y en dialecto veneciano.
Los integrantes han cambiado con los años o siguen siendo la misma familia? Durante la larga vida del grupo, muchos músicos han cambiado pero el núcleo historico de los fundadores ha siempre sido a la cabeza de los Batisto Coco. Empezamos con un cantante solo, enseguida añadimos otros 2 cantantes. Entonces el grupo era formado por 3 cantantes , piano, bajo, congas, timbales, bongos, sax tenor, sax barítono y 3 trompetas.
Porque decidieron tocar Salsa? Que los apasiona de este genero musical?
Lo que nos ha encantado más de la salsa fueron los instrumentos de percusión. En 1982 yo dirigía una escuela de música y la clase de percusión latino américana era frecuentada por muchos estudiantes; durante el carnaval tocábamos rumba, samba y conga al aire libre en las plazas (campi, campielli) de Venecia. A continuación fue algo natural ampliar el número de músicos del grupo, añadiendo un pianista, un bajista, y algunos instrumentistas de viento. Así fue que nacieron los Batisto Coco. Otro aspecto que me apasionó y que todavía me apasiona de esta música es l’alegría y l’atmosfera de fiesta que siempre se crea durante los conciertos donde se toca salsa.

Son 8 discos, cada disco marca una etapa? Que inspiro a cada uno de ellos?

Ahora son nueve, puesto que ya ha salido el último disco por l’aniversario de los 25 años de actividad del grupo. Cada disco tiene un tema específico, una elaboración particolar y, a menudo, instrumentos clásicos como instrumentos de arco, clavicémbalo y oboe. Además, nosotros hemos siempre tenido mucho cuidado con la calidad de la grabación de todos nos discos. Aquí esta una descripción concisa de los 9 cds: • BATISTO COCO (1993) y CAMOMA (1996): canciónes originales en dialecto veneziano y en italiano; canciónes en español; • NOSTRANO MAMBO (1999): homenaje a la ciudad de Venecia y crítica divertida a l’uso del teléfono móvil. CUCADOR (2002): celébres canciónes de la tradición italiana arregladas en ritmo de salsa. • SALSA ’60: canciónes italianas de los años Sesenta en ritmo de salsa. • BATISTO COCO IN CONCERTO (2005): disco en directo de un espectáculo realizado durante el carneval 2005 al Palafenice de Venecia. Include lo mejor de la producción del grupo. • ACQUA ALTA (2007): las canciones de este disco se inspiran en celébres pasajes de música contemporánea de compositores como Boulez, Milhaud, Strawinsky, Satie, Cage, Schönberg, Debussy. Es un disco donde la
música super culta se hace divertida. Los textos bromean sobre los problemas de Venecia. • BAROCCOCOCO (2010): este disco es el fruto de la grande pasión de los Batisto Coco por la música latina en toda sus formas y ritmos: son, salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton, cumbias, mambo, etcétera ; las melodías se inspiran en la música barroca. • 25 ANNI DI MUSICA (2010): este disco ha sido realizado durante un grande concierto donde han participado todos los músicos que han colaborado col grupo en los 25 años de carrera. Es el gratest-hits de los Batisto Coco.
Como responde el publico italiano en sus presentaciones; son tan amantes de la Salsa como los latinos?
Seguro! al público italiano la salsa lo encanta y tambien los espectáculos de los Batisto Coco. Desgraciadamente no sé como es el público latino: nunca me fui en América Latina. Pero creo que los latinos son más abiertos y calídos, tambien bailan solos y incitan el grupo que toca en vivo. Una cosa curiosa que esta pasando frequentemente en Italia en los ultimos años es que, con la gran difusión de las escuelas de baile latino américano, los bailarínos prefieren bailar sobre la música grabada más bien que en vivo. Esto ha provocado una disminución de conciertos de los grupos de salsa y un aumento de actividad por los dj.
Han tocado fuera de italia?
Hemos tocado en Suiza, Austria y Slovenia. Pero nuestro sueño es de poder algun día tocar en America Latina para ver si nuestra salsa veneziana le gusta tambien allí.
En que ciudades han sido las presentaciones más memorables?
Un concierto que me acuerdo siempre con nostalgia fue lo que hicimos a Ginebra, en Suiza, en 2003: el público era tan entusiasta que bailó todo el tiempo y nada menos, cantó algunos pasajes de nuestras canciones en dialecto veneciano, sin comprender nada del significado!
Cual publico les da más energía, el latino o el europeo?
Como lo he ya dicho, el latino lo conozco poco, así que solo puedo decir algo sobre el público europeo que siempre ha apreciado nuestra música y nuestro dialecto.
Quien es su maestro de la salsa, su inspiración? Mi maestro fue Birger Sulsbrück un percusionista danés pero mi maestro “espiritual” y mi máximo inspirador fue Ruben Blades. Batisto Coco compone como grupo o hay un solo responsable?
Varios músicos del grupo son tambien compositores. Por los textos hemos algunos autores venecianos que colaboran col grupo. A veces el compositor escribe ya el arreglo musical, otras veces durante los ensayos es el grupo mismo que arregla la música. De l’organización del grupo se ocupan 3 integrantes del grupo.

Orquesta Juvenil de Francia
Hola Fransua,
Te quiero agradecer de ante mano por esta nueva oportunidad… -Dinos, que te inspiro a formar una Orquesta Juvenil de Salsa en Francia? Debemos la creación de estos tipos de orquestas a Jean-Claude Decalonne, una figura muy importante de la música en Francia. Tuvo la idea cuando vio un documentario en la televisión francesa sobre las orquestas juveniles de Venezuela y el creador del Sistema: José Antonio Abreu. Jean-Claude Decalonne quiso desarrollar este tipos de orquestas en Francia…Al igual que en Venezuela, los comienzos fueron difíciles, tratando de convencer las autoridades para tener subvenciones, tratando de convencer a los directores de las escuelas que la música era una arma social. En Francia, cada años, más de 120 000 alumnos salen de la escuela sin diploma, y al mismo tiempo, apenas 3% de los niños tocan un instrumento. A fuerza de voluntad y mucha fé en su proyecto, 600 orquestas se crearon…pero el camino es todavía largo (en Francia hay 67 000 establecimientos escolares). Pero los resultados son muy positivos: los alumnos que hacen partes del programo tienen menos fracaso escolar, tienen menos problemas de comportamiento… -Como te organizaste para hacerlo, quienes colaboraron contigo? Hace 3 años, Anne Aubé, la directora del conservatorio de la cuidad de Champs-sur-Marne (cerquita de Paris), y aficionada de la musica latina (hizo proyectos musicales con la Banda de Santiago de Cuba, con mi grupo La Contrabanda tambien) me llamo para saber si queria dirijir una “Orquesta Escolares” (asi se llaman en Francia). Imediatamente le contesté que si !!!! era una idea tan loca, pero tan interesante.
-Que requisitos deben de reunir los jóvenes para formar parte de la Orquesta? La única condición es: NO saber tocar música y nunca haber tocado un istrumento de su vida !!! Es importante para que todos los alumnos estén al mismo nivel, que sean iguales. Muchos de los niños que hacen partes de las Orquesta Escolares están en fracaso esco-
lar, y con la música, ahora, son iguales. Y los mejores alumnos en la escuela no son siempre los mejores instrumentistas. -Cuéntanos un poco como funciona la Orquesta juvenil; cuantos integrantes son? Como son los ensayos? Como es el proceso de aprendizaje de un tema? Como se elije un tema? Cuanto tiempo les toma adaptar y dominar un tema? Ante todo quiero precisar que la orquesta que dirijo es la única en Francia que toca música latina. Los otros tienen un repertorio clásico… En mi orquesta somos 35. Cada semanas, a razón de 2 o 3 horas, tienen clases colectivas de instrumentos y de música, y des vez en cuando, cuando un tema esta listo, vengo para un ensayo en “tutti’ (todo el mundo). Los alumnos aprenden a leer la música, pero la traducción oral es importante. Tengo conmigo 6 profesores de instrumentos, y entre ellos, esta Ricardo Garatea que conoces bien (el percusionista y rapero de La Contrabanda) que enseña las percusiones, y es un desafio porqué como pueden ver en el video, los niños cambian de instrumentos en cada tema ! Cuando dirijo la orquesta, los alumnos aprenden a “obedecer” a los signos que hago para lanzar un mambo de metales, para lanzar un corito etc….como en las orquestas profesionales. La música latina es una música muy libre, un mismo tema puede durar 2 minutos como 10 !!! Elegir un tema es muy difícil, sobre todos los primeros que tienen que tocar, porque tienen un nivel instrumental

-Hay algún limite de edad para formar parte de la Orquesta? El proyecto que dirijo se realiza en 3 años en el colegio (es decir, mas o menos entre las edades de 11 años y 14 años en Francia). Despues, los alumnos se van al instituto (liceo) ….pues, el sistema escolar Frances es un poquito complicado y diferente de America Latina.

INTERVIEWS ENTREVISTAS muy limitado, pero eso es mi trabajo: buscar temas “fáciles”, ajustarlos, simplificarlos un poquito….Empezamos con Oye Como Va de Tito Puente…y poco después, Alegria Bomba E’ (una bomba de Puerto-Rico), y funcionó bien !!! El tiempo para dominar un tema es variable….el primero año es mas difícil, pero es mas o menos 2 meses. Pues, las Orquestas Escolares en Francia son un poquito diferentes que en Venezuela donde, por ejemplo, practican a razón de 4 horas por dia, pero el objetivo es igual. En el material disponible en HYPERLINK “http://www.youtube. com” www.youtube.com pudimos apreciar que interpretan varios estilos además de salsa propiamente dicha, que estilos les resultan didácticamente más atractivos? Si, tocamos muchos estilos…de eso estoy muy orgulloso, porqué tu sabes que soy un aficionado de los ritmos latinos. Tocamos bomba y plena de Puerto-Rico, Cumbia de Colombia, Merengue de Républica Dominicana, Bembe, guajira y son-montuno de Cuba, Salsa de Nueva-York. Los proximos años vamos a tocar otros ritmos como los ritmos de comparsa de La Habana o de Santiago de Cuba, y quizas ritmos venezolanos como Joropo (pero que dificil es este ritmo !!!) La plena y el merengue tienen muchos exitos, pero es normal, son ritmos donde los tiempos están bien marcados, y es mas fácil entenderlos para los niños franceses acostumbrados a ritmos de música popular (rock, pop, r&b…) -En sus presentaciones se combina música y baile, trabajan en combinación con alguna escuela de baile, o les gustaría? Cual seria? Vamos a desarrollar eso, porque es algo importante, sin hablar de “baile”, vamos a enseñar a los niños a “moverse” en el escenario, a sentirse bien en la escena. Es algo muy importante para mi. En el video, invite a mi novia Laura Isabel Ramirez(de Barranquilla), una especialista de los bailes folklóricos Colombiano (Cumbia, Mapale, bullerengue….). La música y el baile son hermanos, y no podemos separarlos.

-A donde acuden los jóvenes que quieren formar parte de la Orquesta? Dirijo esta orquesta en el colegio Armand Lanoux de Champs-surMarne, y desgradaciamente, hay una sola clase que puede aprovechar de este proyecto, porqué no tenemos las ayudas financiales suficientes para crear otras clases. Cuando los alumnos llegan al colegio, al fin del primer año, organizamos un concierto con los alumnos que terminan el ciclo del proyecto, y como así, los alumnos pueden escuchar los instrumentos, probarlos, y el año después, elijimos 35 alumnos. Es crual, porqué tenemos muchas solicitudes, muchos alumnos quieren hacer partes del proyecto, pero como te decía, no tenemos suficiente dinero para crear otra clase.

-Nos puedes nombrar alguno de los compositores/cantantes favoritos de los chicos? Pues, imagino que son muchos !!! Pues, como son franceses, no saben mucho de los artistas latinos….escuchan David Guetta, Rihanna o Nirvana….pero estoy orgulloso de haberles hecho conocer a los compositores como Tito Puentes, Mongo Santamaria, Rafael Cepeda etc… Y Sabes algo, cuando caminas por la calles de Champs-sur-Marne, de vez en cuando puedes cruzar alumnos cantando La Colegiala o El Bombon De Elena !!! Y sabes lo que me gusta lo mas: escuchar ritmos latinos el viernes en la tarde (día del ensayo o clases) en una escuela francesa ! eso me llena de orgullo totalmente. La música no tiene frontera, es algo que defiendo desde mucho tiempo en mi grupo La Contrabanda, y este proyecto es el mejor ejemplo que podemos tener !! -En donde se han presentado? Tocamos mucho y desde el primer año de pratica: por ejemplo
en el ministerio de la educación, frente al ministro !!! que estrés ;-) Tuvimos el honor de tocar en la sala Gaveau en Paris que es una de la sala de música clásica mas famosa de Francia, y lo que te puedo decir, es que las paredes de la salsa sigen vibrando de ritmos latinos !!! -Recibes ayuda de la comunidad o de el Gobierno? Si, recibimos ayudas del gobierno pero también de otros organismos ( marcas de instrumentos por ejemplo)…pero nunca es suficiente ! Es una batalla perpetual para “hacer vivir” estas orquestas…para que no se mueran !!! -Donde podemos encontrar mas información sobre la Orquesta? Kaunas has a reputation as a sprawling urban city and a hotbed of post-Soviet mafia. Think again. This vibrant city, the second largest in Lithuania, is a thriving cultural and industrial centre with an interesting Old Town. Legend has it that Kaunas, 100km west of Vilnius at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers, was founded by the son of tragic young lovers. Beautiful maiden Milda let the Holy Eternal Flame go out while caring for her lover Daugerutis. They were sentenced to death by vengeful gods, thus they fled to a cave and gave birth to Kaunas. Archaeologists insist the city dates from the 13th century and until the 15th century was in the front line against the

“Salsakaunas“ is a young organization, bringing the enthusiasts of salsa together in Kaunas city. Their aim is to create and develop Kaunas salsa community, introduce the real spirit of salsa to Kaunas, create it in their classes, parties and concerts. Donatas Chlebinskas, the teacher of “SalsaKaunas,“ danced all his life. He was a ballroom dancer in his childhood, later he became a b-boy, hip hop, popping and locking dancer and instructor (won a solo hip hop Baltic cup in 2007). And finally discovered salsa. He started developing his LA salsa dancing skills in Portland, Oregon, where he danced in Viscount dance studio with incredible dancers and teachers Sara and Jorge. As well as salsa classes, the sisters organize immensely popular salsa parties and many other events during the year, notably the Lithuanian Salsa Festival which they launched in 2007. The 4th Vilnius Salsa Festival in 2010 will see the best international teachers, who are invited to all biggest salsa events in the world, come to Vilnius for the SalsaSisters’ latest salsa extravaganza. SalsaSisters parties differ from other salsa parties in that only very well selected, pure salsa music is played by dj Weedska. SalsaSisters believe that salsa is all about the music as well as the dance. It’s the inseparable combination of the two that generates the all-consuming passion and the unbounded joy, as well as the elegance and the beauty, which are at the very heart of salsa. To learn salsa is a challenge which promises the greatest of rewards - the discovery of the perfect way to express yourself, without inhibitions. There is nothing that the two sisters love more than to help their students unlock their dancing talent, find their own passion for salsa and express themselves in way that they would never have believed possible. A love of salsa can bring almost limitless joy......and it is a love which lasts forever.

(and sometimes brave attempts to convert us to on2) style salsa is taught by salsakaunas dance school managed by Donatas Chlebinskas. He is performing in some European salsa festivals under the title “Tiene Tumbao”. We have less occasions for socials dances than those salseros residing in Vilnius. In autumn, winter and spring there is definitely a social on Friday starting from 8 pm local time at ... school hall. Yes, you heard it right - at school! We can’t be very choose - it’s cheap to rent, the floor is perfect, good air flow and upgraded sound system and we always have a Russian poet Alexander Pushkin watching from this portrait on the wall. And other times which are not regular we have dance evenings in some bars or outside. We have an issue coming into long-term agreements with nicer places than school hall - it’s not like we cause problems, it’s just we don’t bring enough profit for them because most salseros in Kaunas are very young (students at school or university) and have shallow pockets. At least on Fridays socials are free. But when we do have grand-events (by that I mean one day workshops with a foreign instructor and all night long social dance evening) - people are usually told month or two in advance. Lucky we in Kaunas do have an airport with Ryanair which has many great destinations with bigger salsa cities like Frankfurt, Main, Berlin, Paris, London etc. Of course, people from those cities may come to us too if they are not scared of school hall :) or for more special occasions. And for special occasions we do have an orchestra - Baltic Salsa Orchestra directed by Federico Manzanares. People are really passionate about salsa there in Kaunas but enough I guess. My dream is to make this passion burn in open fire!

The biggest influence to Lithuanian salsa events is: from SalsaSisters - in year 2011 at the end of May the 5th Vilnius Salsa Festival will be held - a merit of two salsa-addicted sisters Elena and Ieva Dadurkaitės. Thanks to them, we have already seen such stars and great teachers as Anna and Joel Massacote, Jorjet Alcocer and Anthony Troy, Mouaze, Super Mario and many more. As those two great persons Ieva and Elena live in Vilnius - salsa social scene is pretty busy there powered by so far the best and only one known abroad DJ Weedska. I can tell very little about socials in Klaipėda as it’s pretty far

Miami, Florida - Issac Delgado ha sido nominado con su disco L-O-V-E al premio al “Mejor Álbum de Jazz Latino” en los Grammy Latinos 2010, que se entregarán el próximo 11 de noviembre en una ceremonia que se celebrará en el Mandalay Bay Events Center de Las Vegas (Estados Unidos). “Me siento muy feliz de estar entre los nominados con este disco L-O-V-E. Es algo que le da un sentido interesante y diverso a mi carrera; es musica de toda la vida, respetando nuestra cultura y nuestro idioma”, comentó el artista.
Issac Delgado, artista capital de la escena latina, ha conseguido con L-O-V-E un disco excepcional en el que “la voz masculina más destacada que ha dado Cuba desde el inicio de la revolución” (según Nat Chediak) nos deleita recreando el repertorio de Nat King Cole. Entre 1958 y 1962, Nat King Cole publicó sus tres discos latinos. Cantados en un castellano aprendido fonéticamente y grabados en Cuba, Brasil y México, en ellos aparecían canciones como Perfidia; Quizás, quizás, quizás; Ay cosita linda; Piel canela; Aquellos ojos verdes; Yo vendo unos ojos negros... Aquellas canciones viajaron desde América Latina a España, pasando por Japón, Estados Unidos y medio mundo, incrustando en la memoria de millones de personas la voz adictiva y aterciopelada de Cole, sus particulares vers! iones de clásicos boleros (también de algunos cha-cha-cha, temas brasileños y rancheras) acompañados de grandes músicos como el pianista Bebo Valdés, de orquestaciones suaves y románticas, de percusiones latinas. Con esta historia como fuente de inspiración, Issac Delgado ha publicado a través del sello Calle 54 Records el álbum L-O-V-E. Producido por Nat Chediak y el propio Delgado, con Todd Barkan como productor asociado y Fernando Trueba y Chediak como productores ejecutivos, contiene 12 canciones, la mayoría del repertorio tradicional latino que en su día cantó Cole y que ahora recrea el gran cantante cubano acompañado de unos músicos de excepción y con la colaboración especial de Freddy Cole, hermano de Nat King Cole. Issac Delgado nació el 11 de abril de 1962. Su madre es la bailarina Lina Ramírez, quién integrara las célebres Mulatas de Fuego del cabaret Tropicana. El primer esposo de Lina es el compositor Ángel Díaz (Rosa mustia) en cuya
casa se fraguó el movimiento filin que dotó al bolero cubano la complejidad armónica de la balada norteamericana. Una de las principales influencias de esta corriente fué Nat King Cole e Issac creció escuchando sus canciones. Era de esperar que, una vez radicado en Estados Unidos, deseara rendirle homenaje a esta figura que tanto marcó la música latinoamericana en el mundo entero. La educación musical de Issac fué formal. A partir de los 10 años de edad estudia en los conservatorios Amadeo Roldán e Ignacio Cervantes y canto con Mariana de Gonish, maestra de las principales figuras de la canción cubana. A los 18 años de edad debuta con el Grupo Proyecto de Gonzalo Rubalcaba, para luego pasar a la Orquesta de Pacho Alonso y a NG La Banda, en cuya agrupación se establece como unos de los máximos exponentes de timba, la nueva sonoridad de la música afrocubana. En 1991 debuta en solitario bajo la dirección artística de Rubalcaba. Desde entonces, ha grabado una docena de discos y viajado por el mundo entero, dándose a conocer como “El Chévere de la Salsa”. El antiguo crítico del New York Times, Peter Watrous, lo denomina “uno de los grandes cantantes del Car! ibe, uno de los grandes cantantes del siglo veinte, el Frank Sinatra de la salsa”. Sus últimas grabaciones han sido nominadas a los Grammy, a las que ahora se une L-O-V-E, candidato al Grammy Latino 2010 en la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Jazz Latino.

Lima, Perú (2 de noviembre de 2010) - El dúo de música urbana Dyland y Lenny formó parte de un homenaje a José Feliciano que realizó el reconocido programa peruano “Lima Limón” de America TV. Durante el programa de televisión varios artistas rindieron tributo al cantautor puertorriqueño por su aportación a la música latinoamericana interpretando algunos de sus temas más conocidos. “Para nosotros es un honor que nos hayan invitado a un homenaje de José Feliciano. Él es un gran artista y uno de los cantautores más importantes que ha dado nuestra Isla (Puerto Rico). Tener la oportunidad de interpretar uno de sus temas y que nos felicite es un gran honor”, expresó emocionado Lenny. Rubén Blades y Gilberto Santa Rosa, “El Poeta y El Caballero de la Salsa”, respectivamente, han anunciado que irán de gira juntos en los Estados Unidos a principios del 2011, en un espectáculo acertadamente titulado “Una Sola Salsa”, en los que cantarán sus grandes éxitos. El tour, llevará a estas dos superestrellas de la salsa a toda América del Norte, a ciudades como Nueva York, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Ángeles y San Juan de Puerto Rico. Este año Blades y Santa Rosa realizó un dúo titulado “Me cambiaron las preguntas”, que aparece en Santa álbum Rosas nuevas, titulado “Irrepetible”. La canción marca un punto culminante de Gilberto en su carrera musical, desde su primera canción que los registros que se centran principalmente en una cuestión social.

El centro sólo ha logrado incrementar de dos a ocho por ciento los donantes hispanos en la última década. Este año, se espera que sólo un cinco por ciento de los hispanos diagnosticados con la enfermedad puedan recibir un trasplante de médula ósea. La demanda de un trasplante, entre las poblaciones minoritarias, es altamente desproporcional, y la base de datos para estas minorías no es suficiente para cumplir con los lazos de coincidencias entre donantes y pacientes. Debido a que estos lazos o trazas son únicas para personas de una ascendencia específica, la mayoría de las coincidencias entre los donantes es con pacientes de la misma raza o grupo étnico. Por eso, City of Hope y la campaña “Únete a la gota de la vida” buscan concienciar a los latinos ya que “se requieren con urgencia donantes de diversas razas y grupos étnicos”. Fundada en 1914, City of Hope es una institución independiente de investigación biomédica, tratamiento y educación, en la lucha para derrotar el cáncer, diabetes, HIV/SIDA y otras enfermedades. Gracias a la campaña “Únete a la gota de la vida” se ha logrado reunir alrededor de 1,6 millones de dólares para dicha institución. “Esta organización y estos médicos realmente hacen milagros. Necesitaba colocar todo ese sentimiento, esa esperanza, esas posibilidades en mi piano y con una letra que lo dijera todo”, indicó el pianista que, además de participar en otros aspectos de la campaña, estrenará en diciembre cortes navideños acompañado de la mexicana Dulce María y el dúo venezolano Chino y Nacho. “La gota de la vida” está disponible a 99 centavos en tiendas online como iTunes y Amazon. Además el compositor invitó a la comunidad latina a hacerse la prueba para ser donante. Existen dos procedimientos para donar una médula ósea. El primero consiste en extraer la sangre para seleccionar las células progenitoras de sangre periférica (PBSC) y, el segundo, se extrae la médula con una aguja durante un procedimiento ambulatorio con anestesia. La médula ósea se repone entre cuatro y seis semanas por completo. Estrellas cantan “La gota de la vida” para incentivar la donación de médula ósea Miami, 27 oct (EFE).- El pianista Arthur Hanlon reúne a 46 reconocidos artistas para cantar su tema “La gota de la vida” con el que busca ayudar económicamente y promover el registro de la comunidad latina en el programa nacional de donantes de médula ósea. Aleks Syntek, Gloria Estefan, Plácido Domingo, Ricardo Montaner, Tito El Bambino, Marcos Witt, Marco Antonio Solís, Enrique Iglesias, Emmanuel, Franco D Vita, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Luis Fonsi, Jenni Rivera, Luis Enrique, Ana Isabell y Germán Montero son algunas de las estrellas que colaboran en el tema que se estrenó esta semana. “Como productor estaba pensando: muchos cantantes, muchos artistas. A veces hay egos, cómo hacemos para controlar eso”, dijo a Efe el pianista estadounidense. Su preocupación ante la posibilidad de algunos por brillar más que la canción se desvaneció completamente ante la respuesta de los artistas después de ver un vídeo con imágenes de niños pacientes del centro de investigaciones y hospital City of Hope en Los Ángeles, que organiza la campaña. “Lo que tú quieras (Arthur). Si tú quieres canto una sola palabra, no me importa”, fue la respuesta, dijo el artista. La grabación del tema y el vídeo dirigido por el colombiano Simon Brand se realizó en tres partes el año pasado: un día después de la premiación de los Grammy Latino en Las Vegas y posteriormente en Nueva York y Miami. Según City of Hope, las investigaciones demuestran que los latinos son la tercera comunidad más propensa a sufrir cáncer de médula ósea y todavía son los menos dispuestos a participar en el programa de registro de donantes de este tejido que se encuentra el interior de los huesos largos, vértebras, costillas, esternón, huesos del cráneo, cintura escapular y pelvis.

Later on in the evening, Angel Lebron Y Su Sabor Latino played live Salsa music and local talent performed for the Bay area residents to kick off the event. From Friday until Sunday, students were able to take workshops from local and international instructors to learn basic and advanced techniques, enthusiasts could watch team, couple, and solo performances, and dancers could showcase their skills in amateur and professional division competitions. Perter Maiden Here is Jose Alberto “El Canario” in 2002 in San Francisco. El Canario is a veteran Salsa singer and bandleader who was born in the Dominican Republic but raised in Puerto Rico. The venue was Roccapulco in the Mission District, a large club that was once Cesar’s Latin Palace. It is notable for, among other things, having the names of Salsa greats spelled out on the walls in neon lights. I was in the front row, as I often am, to avoid having people in the audience blocking my view of the artists. I was using an ultra-wide lens, a zoom at 17mm, which allowed me to include Canario’s outstretched arms and his backing singers. The distortion that the lens creates stretches his already long hands a little longer in the image. I like the way the coro is at his fingertips, literally.

The producers of BURN THE FLOOR have announced that Robbie Kmetoni, Ashleigh Di Lello & Ryan Di Lello, Karen Hauer, and Janette Manrara will appear as featured dancers during the 2010-11 US tour of the Broadway smash hit.

This fall, the new Broadway production of BURN THE FLOOR embarks on a 40-week tour of the U.S. ROBBIE KMETONI, an 18-year-old dancer from Sydney, Australia, wowed judges and audiences alike on the third season of SYTYCD (Australia), taking top honors as the overall winner. As his prize, he elected to join the tour of BURN THE FLOOR. Kmetoni will make his professional theatrical debut this summer when the tour plays in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre. ASHLEIGH DI LELLO has performed and taught in 19 different countries and has most recently made it all the way to the 2009 finale on TV’s “SYTYCD” with her husband, Ryan. She was a DanceSport Junior Latin Champion and a United States Junior American Latin Finalist by the age of 12. A year later she became sick with a life-threatening illness that she would battle for many years. When Di Lello returned to ballroom dancing, she became a three-time DanceSport Amateur Latin Champion and a United States Amateur Latin Finalist.

Esta suma de textos de valor fundamental para la historia de la música urbana venezolana, recoge el fervor sistemático de Federico Pacanins durante casi treinta años de investigación. Tropicalia Caraqueña comprende ensayos, reportajes, entrevistas, crónicas, cronologías, algunos de ellos fueron publicados en las revistas y periódicos de los que Pacanins es colaborador, y otros muchos han permanecido inéditos. Los éditos, por otra parte, han sido trabajados desde sus versiones originales en tal magnitud que la mayoría son sustancialmente distintos.
Agudeza, penetración, información de primera mano a través de entrevistas memorables, asistencia a muchos ensayos y conciertos, viajes iluminadores, adquisición de una montaña de discos y de allí un buen gusto para escoger con criterio la música más elaborada , los textos más originales y representativos y los personajes perdurables, todo un cúmulo precioso de datos que nos brindó en una síntesis agradable y apasionada, en la cual plasmó más de tres decenios misteriosos e inquietantes, que ya son parte de esa realización histórica y musical que logró proyectarse, colocarse e influir a nivel planetario con toda su contundencia.

Photographers Lou Dematteis and Kayana Szymczak have documented the physical and emotional reality of those affected by this toxic contamination, roughly 30 times greater than the more widely reported Exxon Valdez spill.

Orquesta formada por Cristian González y la fusión de la orquesta de Sabor Cubano cuyo director es Arguelles Puey “Mambi” quién comenzó a grabar en el año 1979 en Cuba con éxitos como “Mambo Bohemio” y “Yegua”. El trabajo musical de Cristian González “Con todo el sabor” grabado en el 2000, trajo un remarcable éxito en el mundo musical, que incluyo el tema “AVENTURERA” el cual los ha motivado para continuar produciendo álbumes de gran impacto. Para el año 2001 se grabó la producción “Baile de Rumba,” destacándose el tema “Lagrimas Negras”. En los años siguientes se han logrado posicionar temas como: Te fuiste, Llegamos durísimos, Seductora rumba y Aquella noche. En el 2006 se proyectó con gran aceptación el tema “Amé todo de ti” y “Naufrago de amor”. Entre el 2007 y 2008 se grabaron temas como El mensajero del amor y Como quisiera decirte; este último se firmo con Sony BMG Music para un CD variado de salsa llamado “La sucursal de la Salsa”. A comienzos del 2009 se posicionaron dos nuevos temas, La chica de la bella mirada y Si me quieres querer Letra y Música David César, con las voces de Cristian González y Jorge Murillo.
