I want to say welcome and thank you for signing up to receive the monthly publication, International Salsa Magazine. Printing has gone through a lot of changes since Johannes Gutenberg first invented the printing press. We believe that digital printing is the wave of the future and we are proud to be riding that futuristic wave. It is so convenient for everyone to get a magazine to you without any delay and at a fraction of what it would normally cost. We try to print articles that may be of interest to musicians, dancers, promoters, and establishments that host Latin music events. We publish articles sent to us by our readers, and correspondents in both English and Spanish. We actively accept correspondents throughout the world. Our correspondents are the link to all the other members about what is happening in their respective areas. At times correspondents attend events and interview artists performing in their areas. They also tell us the hot spots for people to go dancing and special concerts. The magazine also tries to inform on all webpages about salsa. We do not feel that others are our competition, but that they are our brothers in this effort to keep our art alive. There are also a great deal of free music available on line and we try to tell our readers about those stations.

This magazine is different from a webpage, because since it is a monthly publication, you know that what you are reading is current events in the salsa world. We hope to make everyone associated with us proud to be a part of International Salsa Magazine. Maria Ferrara, Romina Maraschini, and Diego Solovitas all work very hard every month to make this magazine available to you. We hope to get your emails and feed back about how we can improve, bands you know about, if they recorded a CD and want to be reviewed, or if there is an event, or place that you want to tell us about. The Duomo di Milano, the city’s stunning Gothic cathedral

Milan (Italian: Milano) is financially the most important city in Italy and the second largest in Italy. While not considered as beautiful as some Italian cities, having been greatly destroyed by Second World War bomb raids, the city has rebuilt itself into a thriving cosmopolitan business capital. In essence, for a tourist, what makes Milan interesting compared to other places is that the city is truly more about the lifestyle of enjoying worldly pleasures: a paradise for shopping, football, opera, and nightlife. Milan remains the marketplace for Italian fashion – fashion aficionados, supermodels and international paparazzi descend upon the city twice a year for its spring and autumn fairs. Milan is famous for its wealth of historical and modern sights - the Duomo, one of the biggest and grandest Gothic cathedrals in the world, La Scala, one of the best established opera houses in the globe, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, an ancient and glamorous arcaded shopping gallery, the Brera art gallery, with some of the finest artistic works in Europe, the Pirelli tower, a majestic example of 1960s modernist Italian architecture, the San Siro, a huge and famed stadium, or the Castello Sforzesco, a grand medieval castle. So, one has their fair share of old and new monuments. Plus, it contains one of the world’s most famous paintings - Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. If Rome represents the “old” Italy, Milan represents the “new” Italy. Milan is the most modern of all Italian cities, and it still keeps most of its past history intact.

At first sight, Milan looks like a bustling and relatively stylish (with is shiny display windows and elegant shops) metropolis, with a good number of grand palaces and fine churches in the centre, but might seem like a slightly prosaic, soulless and business-orientated place. It can be quite rainy, grey and foggy, and some of the buildings, ancient or modern, have quite a severe appearance. Whilst there are a lot of parks, Milan looks as if it has very little greenery, and apart from the very well-kept historic part, many areas are indeed quite scruffy and dirty. However, Milan, unlike most usually historical European cities which throw the sights in your face, requires quite a lot of exploring - take it as it is, and you might enjoy its fashionable glitter and business-like modernity, but might find it not very “captivating”. If you spend time, though, strolling through less well known areas such as the pretty Navigli, the chic Brera district, the lively University quarter, or some of the smaller churches and buildings, you’ll find a forward thinking, diverse city filled in every corner with history, and with a plethora of hidden gems. Plus, with such an established history in theatre, music, literature, sport, art and fashion, there’s really not much you can miss. Milan, as many have noticed, doesn’t fully feel like a part of Italy. Despite the similarities between typical Italian cities such as Verona or Venice with the city, it does have a different atmosphere. Milan feels more like a bustling, busy, fashionable business capital - where in several cafes, lots of people only stop to

ISM TRAVELS TO MILAN have a quick espresso at the bar counter, and where tourists at times seen even more laid back than the locals. Milan, unlike the traditionally red-terracotta roofed Italian cities, is quite grey, as many buildings are constructed using limestone or dark stones. Ancient buildings mainly have a sort of Austrian/Germanic neoclassical look with some slight French influences. However, with some cycling around in old fashioned bicycles, restaurant chairs and tables outside at summer filled with locals and tourists alike, and people strolling down the pedestrian avenues, licking an ice cream or carrying some heavy shopping bags, Milan does boast some “Italian flair”.

There are lot and a huge variety of things you can see in Milan - from fine churches, old palaces, excellent museums, world class theatres and opera houses, cultural gems, striking buildings, sleek modern architectural works and lovely streets and squares. But remember, not all of them are right in the absolute centre - some of the most wonderful gems can be found near the outskirts or even outside of Milan. Note, though, that most museums are closed on Mondays.

These differences between Rome and Milan are evident from several proverbs, such as an Italian saying about the differences of the two cities which roughly translates, “Rome is a voluptuous woman whose gifts are very apparent, while Milan is the shy, demure girl whose treasures are plentiful, but discovered in time.” Milan, depending on how you want to tour the city, is virtually visitable all the year. In autumn, the weather is warm/cool, and in later months can be quite rainy and foggy. At this time of the year, the city’s inhabitants are very busy with work, so, the only people you’re likely to see wandering around are tourists. All the major venues and shops are opened, since it is the working part of the year.

In spring, the weather is similar to that of autumn. People go back to work, and the atmosphere becomes more quiet, yet serious unlike that of the winter. Parks become nice to visit, as trees blossom. The city is also quite nice to visit at Carnival, where people dress up and celebrate, and during Easter, where there are special services held in churches and some special events.

Historical library that also houses the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art gallery. • Poldi Pezzoli Museum. One of the world’s richest private art collections. · Bagatti Valsecchi Museum. A late 19th century aristocratic mansion with Italian Renaissance art collections. •Societa’ per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente. Changing exhibitions of contemporary art. • The Sforzesco Castle. Houses several of the city’s museums and art gallery collections. Home to the museums of applied arts, ancient art, historical musical instruments, prehistory, Egyptian art and fine arts. • Civico Museo Archeologico. Roman antiques from Milan and the surrounding area. • Contemporary Arts Pavillion (PAC) · Museo del Duomo (Museum of the Cathedral) Displays the 700 year old history of construction of the cathedral, with impressive walk-in wooden models, façade designs originating from several centuries, sculptures and more. Museo d’Arte Paolo Pini. Contemporary art gallery collection. • Galleria d’Arte Moderna. Mainly features 19th Century Italian art.

In summer, Milan can become extremely hot and humid, with the odd powerful rainstorm here and there. Whilst in July, apart from the weather, most shops remain open, in August, as many locals go off to take their summer holidays, many businesses and venues shut down (with the notice Chiuso per ferie, or shut down for vacation). The city may become quite empty with the odd tourist strolling around, and with several of the main sights shut down. Despite it’s not the best time for shopping and the weather’s not at all times very pleasant, it’s good if you want to enjoy the city to yourself when it’s quiet, and maybe want to stroll around, sipping at the odd open bar or at an ice cream, or walking in a silent park. Despite many businesses shut down, some still do remain open, and you will still be able to find some open shops, restaurants and museums.

Milan offers the visitor a large variety of art museums, mainly of Italian Renaissance and Baroque.

In winter, the city can become very, very cold (often below or around zero degrees centigrade), and the weather is usually foggy and rainy if not snowy. However, the city, in the few weeks before Christmas, becomes delightful to visit - the main sights are all illuminated by stunning lights, a huge Christmas tree is set up in front of the Duomo, vendors and markets can be found everywhere, many shop and display windows are decorated and the streets become bustling with locals and tourists alike. However, the only downside is that it can become extremely crowded, noisy and busy.

Museums

Churches Milan has the oldest churches in Italy (yes-- older than the ones in Rome because Milan was the capital of the Northern part of the late Roman Empire). Some of the most beautiful churches one can see in Milan are: The Duomo, in Duomo Square. Milan’s main cathedral, a massive late Gothic church (started in 1386) in white marble, with hundreds of spires and thousands of statues on its exterior and a famous façade. Don’t miss the chance to climb up onto the roof and enjoy the spectacular views of the city between the Gothic spires. Saint Mary of the Graces (‘Santa Maria delle Grazie’) — Houses the famous Last Supper (‘Cenacolo Vinciano’) by Leonardo da Vinci. It is best to reserve tickets a few months before the visit. Saint Ambrose, in Piazza San Ambrogio. A beautiful and huge Byzantic/Romanic church which was almost destroyed by allied bombing in World War 2, although some of its Byzantic mosaics are well preserved. Saint Maurice — A must-see! A stunning fully frescoed Renaissance church. Most of the paintings are the work of Bernardino Luini. San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence) — a lovely 4th century basilica, famous for its beautiful courtyard, with Roman-age columns and statue of the emperor Constantine. The church can be reached by tram, or the Missori metro station.

Historic Monuments

The Castello Sforzesco — Where the Sforza-Visconti ruling families of Milan resided. Later it was the Austrian governor’s residence, when Lombardy was part of the Hapsburg empire. It houses several museums. La Scala Theatre. One of the most renowned opera houses in the world. It first opened in 1778 and re-opened in 2004 after extensive renovation. It has seen performances by stars such as Maria Callas and Pavarotti. Cimitero Monumentale — Milan’s old cemetery in Neoclassical style. It is filled with lavish sculptures, impressive mausoleums and monuments. Well worth a visit! Old Hospital — A Renaissance complex which now serves the university. La Rotonda della Besana — An 18th Century Neoclassical complex. It is now an exhibition space. Chiaravalle Abbey— A beautifully-preserved medieval abbey still run by monks today, 7 kms South of Milan.

and cupola. Contains boutiques such as Louis Vuitton and Prada, a McDonald’s fast-food restaurant, a silverware store called Bernasconi, and eating places such as the Zucca in Galleria, Biffi or a Gucci cafe (and loads more, notably art galleries, fashion boutiques, bookstores and restaurants). At Christmas time, it becomes an enchanting place, with beautiful lights and glitzy decorations. For real Milanese cheap food, go to Luini for a Panzerotti on nearby Via San Radegonda. Get off at the Duomo station. Biblioteca Ambrosiana — Historical library with treasures such as Leonardo Atlantic Codex. Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense — A library established in 1770 by the Austrian governor. It has since acquired other historical collections and the archives of RAI (Italy’s state television). It is very active in organizing workshops and debates on new media and new technologies. Piazza del Duomo — the grandest square in the city, the Piazza del Duomo is the cultural and social heart of Milan, and contains several of its most famous sights. Of course, the majestic cathedral and classy Galleria are there, but there also is the Royal Palace, a fine 18th century building which is currently an art exhibition centre, and several big, austere, old buildings. The street, with its huge lights, enormous statue of King Victor, huge buildings, and dark floor does at first sight seem quite overwhelming and overly majestic, but with its lovely cafes, top-quality restaurants and shops, constant flow of pigeons, and the presence of people make it an extremely appealing and interesting place. Since lots of the main streets and sights are or are routed from this place, you can’t really miss it. Piazza Mercanti — a truly enchanting and tiny medieval square, hidden by the grand palaces in the central part of Milan. Here, in “Merchants’ Sqaure” you get lovely Gothic and Renaissance-porticoed houses, and a well right in the middle. At Christmas time, it fills up with markets selling local produce, including mouth-watering panettone, sweets, bonbons and souvenirs. Piazza Belgiojoso — a small, yet very impressive square, which hosts the magnificent neoclassical Belgiojoso Palace, built by Milanese noblemen in the late 1700s, and the House of Manzoni, where notable Italian writer and literary figure Alessandro Manzoni lived, and which today hosts a library and the Centro Nazionale di Studi Manzoniani (National Centre of Manzoni-related studies). Piazza Cadorna is a medium-sized, normal square in central Milan with the funky modern North Station and some fine buildings, but notably a set of peculiar modern sculptures in the middle. Via della Spiga is a lovely and classy little cobblestone street, with some beautiful ancient buildings. The street and its neighborhood are more famous for the center of highclass shopping, where almost every luxury brand can be found. Corso Vittorio Emanuele — near to the Duomo, this is one of the most popular high street shopping arteries in the city. It has a very elegant modern appearance, but too has some well-preserved grand 18th and 19th century buildings, including a rotunda-like neoclassical church. The Corso contains some great retail stores, including big shopping centres, fashionable outlets, and youthful, sporty designer boutiques. Via Montenapoleone is Milan’s top high fashion shopping street. It contains many of the biggest names in fashion, and some of the trendiest and famous emporia and designer stores in the world. Today, despite containing mainly fashion

boutiques, there are also a some jewellery shops and cafes scattered here and there. Via Dante — one of the grandest and most frequented fashionable high streets in Milan. The Via Dante, named after the poet, is a beautiful and debonair pedestrian avenue which goes from the busy Piazzale Cordusio, all the way to the Largo Cairoli, just in front of the city castle. With loads of street vendors, restaurant and cafe tables, and oftenly, street art, glamorous boutiques and often bustling with people, it’s great for anyone who wants to get to the Sforzesco Castle, but who also wants to do some high-class shopping, observe at some glorious Milanese palaces, and possibly sip at a coffee in one of the many open-air bars. It also contains the Piccolo Teatro, a renowned local theatre. Via Dante can be reached by the “Cordusio” metro station, or that of “Cairoli”, at either side of the street. At times, especially Christmas and some of the holidays, it can be chokingly filled with locals, shoppers and tourists. Via Manzoni is an impressive refined-air street lined with aristocratic apartment blocks and opulent churches. It also hosts the Poldi Pezzoldi museum. Today, it is also one of the city’s premier shopping streets, and is noted for containing the Armani Megastore. It is very close to La Scala opera house. Corso di Porta Venezia is considered one of the finest and most beautiful streets in the city. Right near the glitzy Montenapoleone area, it is flanked by a series of beautiful villas, museums and palazzi, from all eras. It also contains parts

of the Giardini Pubblici, an old and leafy garden and park. On addition to being an aristocratic-aired place, today, several elegant boutiques have opened up here, so it’s great for both sight-seeing and designer shopping. Corso Magenta is an elegant and aristocratic street in the north-western part of Milan. It contains sophisticated cafes and shops, and also some fine, mainly Baroque, palaces, notably the Palazzo Litta, one of the best examples of 18th century Milanese architecture, and also a place in which Napoleon I spent some time. Metro stations Conciliazione, Cadorna, Cairoli and Cordusio are the closest to the avenue. The famous Santa Maria delle Grazie church and convent, where Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper can be found, is very close to the Corso. Piazza Duca d’Aosta is a very big, relatively modern and busy square in the north-east of Milan, famous for hosting the city’s majestic central station, and the Pirelli skyscraper. The Piazza is generally bustling with people, and is at the heart of Milan’s economic and business district. It is where you’ll end up if you need to go to the central station, but it is also a good place to go because it boasts some excellent examples of post-Second World War modern architecture, such as the Pirelli building, and some elegant hotels, such as the Hotel Excelsior Gallia. Piazza della Repubblica is a modern and very busy square north-west of Milan. It contains some of the most important office blocks and company buildings in the country, and boasts some good examples of 1950s and 60s Italian archi-

and cosmopolitan feel to it, and despite being very modern, boasts a very old sight, San Babila, a tiny, pretty, Romanesque church standing shadowed away by the huge modern skyscrapers. Piazza San Babila also contains numerous banks, post offices, fast-food restaurants and today also a touch of some funky designer stores too. Conveniance wise, it’s a great place to go, because it connects the Montenapoleone shopping area, with the more central Duomo zone. Piazza Della Scala — The location of the Statue of Leonardo Da Vinci and La Scala theatre. It is a small, but grand square flanked by fine palaces, such as the city hall and the commercial bank. Great place for a photograph and right next to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Ticket office is underground in the Duomo Metropolitana stop. I Navigli — Once the hubs of the city’s commercial life (the industrial canals), after years of abandonment, these pretty and “quintessentially Milanese” places are currently the location where many night spots are open until late, and today, there is a nice mix of old-world ancient shops and cafes, and funky bars and fashion boutiques. I Navigli (or The Canals) consist of Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese. On the last Sunday of every month there is an antiques market along the Naviglio Grande. San Siro Stadium — The famous stadium of Milan, home to AC Milan and Internazionale, two of the most famous and successful football(soccer) clubs in Italy. Terminal point of streetcar 16 or a 10 min walk from MM1 Lotto metro stop. Leonardo’s Horse — A bronze sculpture realized according

tecture. The square in itself is an important one for transportation, and contains some grand hotels. It is also close to the Piazza Duca d’Aosta and the city Central station. Hop off at the Repubblica metro station, right in the middle of the square. Torre Velasca is a tall, huge, castle-like skyscraper built in the 1950s, and one of the first in Italy. Stunning modern architecture. Piazzale Cordusio is a central and busy square in Milan, right near the Duomo. It boasts some grand and beautiful late-19th century architecture. Once, and to some extent still today, it was an economic hub of the city, with the headquarters of several companies, and big banks and postal offices. Corso Buenos Aires is one of the longest shopping streets in Italy and Europe. It is a large avenue, who, at first, is quite old, but the buildings gradually become newer further along. Today, it contains loads, loads and loads of shops, such as Swarovsky, H&M, Milano House of Cashmere, Calzedonia, Outlet, United Colors of Benetton, Adidas, Nike, Calvin Klein, Zara, Luisa Spagnoli, and a good number more. Porta Ticinese and the surrounding area is a very old-fashioned quarter nearly untouched by WWII bombings. At night Milanese people like to have a walk near Colonne di San Lorenzo (S.Lawrence’s columns). Piazza San Babila is a busy and modern square just north of the cathedral and near the city’s fashion district. Architecturally, Piazza San Babila’s buildings are virtually all Art-Deco office blocks from the 1930s, but it has a trendy business

In many pubs and bars you can find a free booklet named Zero2 which is a guide to Milan Nightlife: if you don’t know what to do or where to go, do grab one!

to an original project of Leonardo da Vinci. It is on the courtyard of the race-track of San Siro, just behind the Stadium. The race-track is open on race days but the courtyard is open every day. Parks and gardens Despite not having as much greenery as some cities, Milan offers several parks and gardens, scattered all over the city. Sempione park is a big space of green land right behind the Sforzesco castle, and one of the most famous and popular in the city. Designed in like a neoclassical landscape garden, there are loads of features - such as a lake, an arch called the Arco della pace (arch of peace), a Roman-style sports’ amphitheatre, a tower (which today hosts the Just Cavalli Hollywood), and several interesting features. It’s a lovely leafy place to enjoy a walk at any time of the year. Giardini pubblici (public gardens) is an old 18th century park complex in the Montenapoleone/Porta Venezia district, designed in an English Romantic garden style. Inside, you can find rockeries, water features, fountains, statues and monuments, and other interesting features. You also get a planetarium, a natural history museum, and on the other side of the Palestro street, you can also find an opulent Royal villa which today hosts a contemporary art collection within grand ornate halls. The gardens are in an excellent position since they’re quie near to the Duomo and Brera district, and extremely close to the Montenapoleone street and the glamorous shopping area around it. Giardini della Guastalla (gardens of the Guastalla) are amongst Milan’s oldest (founded in the 16th century), but quite small gardens, and are very close to the University district. The parks, however, were only opened to the public in the early 20th century. You can have a nice walk inside, and you also have a classical Temple-like structure and also a sort of pond with a Baroque railing surrounding it.

Milan by night Milan has a great variety of places where you can have fun. A great starting point is Como Avenue (Corso Como), near Garibaldi Station, full of bars and glamorous clubs. In the summertime, this street is packed with young and attractive people. Another place where you can go is Navigli quarter, near

Other popular night spots with bars and people are viale Monte Nero (on Wednesday it’s packed with people in the piazza in front of a bar called “Momo”), Piazzale Susa (and Citta’ Studi area). Nights are overwhelmingly crowded at the Colonne di San Lorenzo (not far from Navigli quarter), and in the cozy Latin-quarter of Brera. Another good spot is the pedestrian part of Corso Sempione near the “Peace Arch” (Arco della Pace). There are bars and clubs open all week long but usually few people go out at night on Mondays or Tuesdays, the vast majority prefers to have fun on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. However, Wednesday night appears to be one of the coolest to go out in stylish VIP-frequented clubs.

Bomba Estéreo se formo en el 2005 en Bogotá, ¿Cómo se formo su grupo de 4? Simón ya había estado trabajando en el disco cuando me invitó a cantar, él me pasó las pistas, yo me puse a escribir las letras. En cuestión de un par de días tuvimos todo listo! Teníamos afán porque queríamos presentarnos en el LAMC y faltaba poco tiempo. Después se nos unieron Julián y Kike, dos grandes músicos que le dieron su aporte a lo que ya habíamos hecho con Simón. Julián trabajaba en Polen Records, nuestra disquera en Bogotá. Allí lo conocimos y Kike había tocado en varios grupos como Sidestepper y Systema Solar y se unió a nuestro grupo. ¿Que inspiro esta fusión de géneros? Simón se ha dedicado a la música desde siempre y tenía mucha influencia electrónica y conmigo que soy de la costa fue inevitable la fusión

¿Quién compone/escribe sus temas? ¿Es un trabajo en equipo? Las letras de las canciones las escribo yo. Pienso en las experiencias cotidianas, en las costumbres colombianas. Hablo de las hamacas en el tayrona…trato de que quien escuche las canciones aprenda un poco de mi país. También hablo de injusticias, de las cosas que me gustaría que cambiasen y cosas que me preocupan como las chicas anoréxicas. La música la compone Simón.

¿Que aporta cada integrante al grupo? ¿Hay alguno que es más rapero o colombo-caribeño por ejemplo? Bueno Kike y yo somos de la costa. Tenemos ese don del sabor!! Simón es de Bogotá aunque por supuesto que hemos ejercido mucha influencia sobre él con nuestro folclor y él sobre nosotros claro!! Además tanto a Simón como a Julián les gusta experimentar y están buscando todo el tiempo cosas nuevas. Todos somos muy abiertos a nuevos ritmos...

¿En qué países se han presentado? Empezando desde el sur pasando por Argentina, Brasil, Ecuador, EEUU, obviamente en Colombia. En Europa, en un montón de festivales europeos, hemos estado en Francia, España, Inglaterra, Alemania, hace poco estuvimos en el Womex en Dinamarca. En Turquía, Japón y China.

¿Cuál ha sido su presentación más memorable? Claro que todas las presentaciones son memorables por sus diferentes razones pero cerrar el festival LAMC con calle 13 fue genial. En realidad, Bebe debía cerrar ese show pero como no llegó nos llamaron a nosotros ¿Cómo ha evolucionado la banda desde su comienzo? Bueno la verdad que estamos trabajando en nuestro próximo disco que tendrán que esperar hasta marzo pero te puedo contar que ahorita estamos experimentando mucho con improvisación en vivo. Nos ayuda a expresarnos y bueno por supuesto que al conocer tantas culturas y tan diversas al viajar genera una evolución. ¿Quién es su ídolo musical? A mí personalmente me gusta mucho la Mala Rodríguez, Joe Arroyo, la niña Emilia, Buraka Sound Sistema. Uno de sus hits más grandes es el tema ‘Fuego’ ¿Cómo surgió ese tema? Bueno yo iba de viaje y tenía una acidez terrible, un fuego que me quemaba por dentro y así se me ocurrió fuego!! Como se sintieron al ser incluido en FIFA 2010, uno de los video-juegosmás populares de PS3? Imagínate que para nosotros fue una sorpresa muy grata. El alcance que tiene ese video juego es increíble y eso nos abre muchas puertas.

¿Están de gira ahora, a que países van a visitar o ya visitaron? Acabamos de llegar de Argentina, Brasil, Dinamarca, Turquía, España y ahora vamos por Francia. ¿Cuando podemos esperar otro disco de Bomba Estéreo? Estamos preparando todo para que esté listo en marzo de 2011. ¿Se inspiran mas cuando están en casa con el día a día o cuando salen de gira o de viaje y ven esa fusión de culturas que hay en todo el mundo? La inspiración llega desde cualquier lugar, es decir uno puede estar en una playa bonita o mirando la nieve caer por la ventana en cualquier lugar del mundo pero para trabajar y crear preferimos la tranquilidad y la comodidad del hogar. ¿Alguna anécdota que nos quieran contar? La vez que perdí mi pasaporte en Londres y debíamos viajar a Japón. Tuve que volver a Colombia a rehacer el pasaporte mientras el resto de la banda me esperaba en Japón y llegué milagrosamente a tiempo para el concierto. Atravesé el mundo entero en cuestión de horas! La isla del régimen tiene su encanto Cuba:

Granma, Santa Clara, Pinar del Río con sus ríos y cascadas coloridas donde el calor se apacigua a la par de un buen trago de Havana Club bien frío y la inolvidable Casa Museo del inmortal Polo Montañez con su inmenso legado de talento de El Guajiro Natural. A pesar del ambiente a régimen en algunos aspectos que a veces se respira desde el arribo al Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí, mucho más para el cubano que para el turista, el acontecer que vive día a día el cubano y quien visita por vacaciones o negocios a Cuba hay que vivirlo, y este breve relato de viaje da cuenta de ello. La capital tiene su encanto, La Habana, como ciudad principal de la isla, es histórica por haber albergado a grandes personalidades del mundo, en tiempos aquellos donde Al Capone salía de Miami, fugazmente para disfrutar y escapar a la ilegalidad del whisky en USA, y disfrutarlo en la isla al ritmo del son cubano y sus mulatas en el majestuoso Tropicana. Aquel personaje del Viejo y el Mar, quien vivió 21 años en Finca Vigía en el sureste de La Habana, el Nobel estadounidense Ernest Hemingway, quien no escatimaba noche para embriagarse en su bar predilecto, El Floridita en el interior del centro de la ciudad. Infinidades de presidentes, músicos, capos de la mafia, políticos, refugiados, deportistas, militares, actores y personajes de toda clase han encontrado su encanto y un recuerdo inolvidable al pasar por la Plaza de la Revolución y su Museo, el Monumento a José Martí y el famoso homenaje al Ernesto “Che” Guevara y Camilo Cienfuegos, con sus rostros plasmados en los edificios insignias de La Habana. El Príncipe de la Salsa ”

El cantante nicaragüense Luis Enrique sigue cosechando éxitos con su disco “Ciclos” “Hace un año empezábamos a soñar con un disco y verlo ahora todo en perspectiva nos sorprende que el éxito que esperábamos tener llegara tan rápido”, dijo el cantante. “Ciclos” salió a la venta en mayo pasado y, desde entonces, la aceptación del público y de los medios consiguió ubicar nuevamente al “Príncipe de la Salsa” en la escena musical internacional después de nueve años de experimentar con otros géneros. La producción le valió dos Grammy Latino en el 2009 como mejor álbum de salsa y mejor canción tropical por “Yo no sé mañana“, algo que el artista agradeció a quienes hicieron posible su regreso. Luis Enrique Mejía López, artísticamente Luis Enrique (nacido el 28 de septiembre de 1962 en Madriz) es un cantante y compositor nicaragüense de Salsa. Nació la ciudad de Somoto, Nicaragua. Empezó a conocerse a finales de la década de los años 80’s y tuvo mucho éxito en los años 90’s.

En 2007 sacó a la venta el álbum del género World music denominado «Dentro y Fuera» donde cabe destacar los sencillos: «Ay Amor», «Mañana Es Muy Tarde», «Yo Te Amé», etc. En 2009 retoma la salsa a tiempo completo con ¨Ciclos¨ album que produce el reconocido músico Sergio George y que lleva nuevamente a Luis Enrique al reconocimiento internacional. En 2009 graba el tema ¨Vamos a botar la Pelota¨ que identifica las transmisiones de Béisbol en Español de [ESPN] [1] para Latinoamérica y Estados Unidos bajo la producción de Sergio George, Guianko Gómez y Leonte Landino. El tema también identificó el Clásico Mundial de Béisbol 2009 para la cadena deportiva continental.

Su talento también brilló en producciones de otras estrellas como «Abriendo Puertas», el disco de Gloria Estefan donde interpretó instrumentos de percusión del clásico «Mi Tierra». «De hecho, en ese tema, el primer sencillo y gran éxito de ese CD, tuve el placer de realizar la introducción con las tumbadoras».

Su popularidad le permitió además llegar a la actuación estelarizando la novela «Al Son del Amor». En medio de la popularidad conseguida por este rol, graba «Génesis», una producción que lo acerca al género pop, trascendiendo las barreras que impone el haber sido consecuente con un estilo y finalizando su relación con Sony Discos. Con Polygram Latino como nueva casa de discos, dos años más tarde lanza «Timbalaye», dejando ver la madurez conseguida por el paso del tiempo, tanto como compositor, intérprete y productor y permitiendo que la influencia afrocaribeña que había recibido se volcara en sus composiciones. Con el nuevo milenio y luego de cinco años, Luis Enrique graba otra vez salsa de una manera innovadora, fresca, con un ritmo que le es propio y estrenando su propia disquera: Chazz Music, distribuida por WEA Latina. Así el artista se compromete en su totalidad con sus álbumes: nace «Evolución» (2000) y luego «Transparente» (2002), cumpliendo roles de productor, autor, arreglista, músico e intérprete y valiéndole el reconocimiento de sus pares en la música.

Desde su infancia en Somoto, Nicaragua, Luis Enrique estuvo rodeado de una familia donde la música era primordial. Su interés por innovar y crear estaba latente. Entusiasmado en desarrollarse, se instala en Estados Unidos desde el año 1978, mudándose a la ciudad de Los Ángeles. Inspirado por la música del jazz y el rhythm and blues americano, fue agregando nuevos sonidos a sus composiciones. «Mi norte es seguir mi intuición», reconoce. «Llegué a la salsa cuando comprendí que se podía hacer música para bailar, sin sacrificar un buen mensaje», cuenta, reconociendo que fue Rubén Blades el artista que le mostró el camino. Y así es como dejó que la vida se encargara de mostrarle los pasos a seguir y todos los caminos que lo llevaron a la salsa. Se presenta en la ciudad de Miami en una audición para ser la voz líder de un grupo salsero, y el demo que grabó esa tarde, en que descubre su conexión con la música tropical, se convierte en su primera producción discográfica en Estados Unidos: «Amor de medianoche», editado en 1987 por Sony Discos. «Otro de los momentos que fueron importantes de mi carrera fue la llegada, en 1988, a Puerto Rico», rememora. En esta tierra graba la segunda producción titulada «Amor y Alegría», con éxitos inmediatos como «Desesperado», «Tú No Le Amas, Le Temes», «No te quites la ropa» y «Compréndelo». Desde allí la carrera de Luis Enrique gana solidez y sus nuevos discos se convirtieron en números uno en ventas: «Mi Mundo», «Luces del Alma», «Una Historia Diferente», «Luis Enrique Live» - grabado en vivo en el Universal Amphitheater de Los Ángeles -, «Dilema» y «Luis Enrique», además de una docena de producciones grabadas en Costa Rica, Venezuela, México y Puerto Rico.

Por otra parte también trabajó como instrumentista en la canción «María» interpretada por Ricky Martin, y en producciones discográficas para Chayanne, Arturo Sandoval, Alex Acuña Collective Soul, entre otros.

2010 A Proud Moment

I gotten used to the fact that recognition can be elusive in my business. It can be especially sweet once it arrives at your door. I experienced one of the proudest moments of my life this past weekend when I was honored for my 36 years of promoting and presenting Latin Music on the airwaves. I along with 4 of my peers in radio, Chata Gutierrez (KPOO), Emiliano Echeverria (KPFA) and Avotcja (KPOO/KPFA) were honored during the 29th annual Encuentro Del Canto Popular which benefited the El Tecolote Newspaper celebrating 40 years of serving the Mission District community. The wonderful music was provided by La Familia Pena-Govea and the Futuro Picante youth salsa band (the future of Salsa with those kids 9 to 18). I was presented with the Certificate Of Honor from SF Mayor Gavin Newson in recognition of my many contributions to Latin Music. I was also presented by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (a former comic with wicked wit) with the Certificate Of Recognition by the California Legislative Assembly for my role as producer, radio host and dj who helped create an environment where Latin Music could thrive in the Bay Area. Salsa dancing is a sensual and erotic dance that embraces the fusion amongst African and Spanish music put into action on the dance floor in the Cuban Son, Son Montuno, Danzón, Mambo, Guaguancó and Afro-Cuban music. Salsa dancing is about expressing sensuality, two bodies caressing each other and allowing both body and mind to be swept away by the beat of the percussion, trumpets, trombones, bass guitar, piano, tres guitar, congas, timbales, bongos, maracas, guiro and cowbell. After one night of salsa dancing, Jackie Flores fell in love with the music and its lyrics that range from romantica and erotica to Santería.

INTERVIEWS ENTREVISTAS For Jackie, dancing salsa was not an easy thing to do because she had no idea on how to dance salsa until one night a guy at a local salsa club in L.A. offered to teach her how to dance. Since that night, she has been dancing salsa for over ten years and she is not quitting anytime soon. According to Jackie, traveling from Las Vegas to L.A. every weekend is costly and time consuming. So Jackie has decided to bring salsa from L.A. directly to the city renowned for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, adult entertainment (Sin City), film making, in other words, The Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! Before moving to Las Vegas, Jackie lived in Southern California where she grew up and lived for most of her life along with her family and close friends. Living in L.A was fun and she would go salsa dancing with close friends everywhere salsa dancing was available. She traveled often to Long Beach, Manhattan Beach and throughout L.A. “One of the biggest things I miss of L.A. is the salsa scene because Vegas is not at all there yet”, says Jackie. According to Jackie, there are a few salsa places is Las Vegas, but is more of a Latin Club, which is different from a salsa place.

Establishing a salsa club in Las Vegas takes time and it is competitive because many other people are trying to do the same thing, but “there has to be a way of working together as opposed against feeling threatened”, says Jackie. According to Jackie, it is complicated from an illusion point of view because it is Las Vegas, the Entertainment Capital of the World (most tourists do not come to dance salsa) and the salsa theme is not established. The key point is to establish a steady salsa scene in Las Vegas.

Jackie is holding the 1st Annual Salsa Awards in Las Vegas, which objective is to recognize the hard work and achievement of local artist. The idea is to create an atmosphere of a community to achieve what is also my goal, to expand the salsa scene here in Las Vegas says Jackie. Following Las Vegas event, Jackie will hold similar event in L.A. under “La Salsa Awards”. ISM: What are some of the challenges that you are facing or think will face as you move forward? JF: I think we are in a very early stage of trying to put something together and that is why there are so many ideas flying…there are obstacles in many things and we got to focus more on the foundation…even bands from L.A. want to come to Vegas. So I think there is work to be done here in Vegas by the local people and the local bands to get a good foundation. I have been working with people from East L.A… there is a big passion here in Vegas to do a weekly thing. ISM: Are you having problems with anyone? JF: I am really not having problems with anyone, I think is the logistics of putting something together… trying to get people together because the salsa scene has been on and off or something starts then it dies… the salsa crowd is scattered all over the place.

ISM: Have you contacted a specific band from L.A. which you will consider working with? JF: No, I have not. I have talked to some bands in L.A. and in Vegas and everyone is excited and want to be involved… it is like a puzzle trying to see how everyone is going to fit in this big puzzle! It is exciting and there is a demand for it…not only the bands, but the people also want to see this happen. ISM: What motivates you to go forward with this project? JF: Well, I love salsa and I cannot be going to L.A. every weekend to dance salsa, so I am going to bring salsa to me! One way or another, I am going to make it work! People here are very interested and some have reached out to me already on how they can help which is great…is just putting the pieces in the right places for it to work; I am very excited about it. ISM: Do you feel you are going to have a problem getting a license? JF: I do not think there are going to be any issues with that at least at this point. I think is more of finding the right thing you know, there are many casinos here and you are trying to differentiate among the two groups of people, most of the locals do not necessary like going to the strip and of course you have the tourist that is all they go to, so how you balance among these two groups? This means it creates two different venous on how you balance that out, that is one thing. ISM: Do you have a specific location whether it is on the strip or off the strip?

INTERVIEWS ENTREVISTAS JF: There are several locations and I have talked to several people and we are trying to figure out what we can do. Yes, there are a few locations in mind. ISM: I understand Albert Torres conducts many events in Las Vegas. What role does he play in the 1st Annual Salsa Awards? JF: The only show I am aware of that he conducts is the Congress. This does not mean he does not conduct any other shows. He is not associated with LV Salsa Awards or LV Salsa and/or its upcoming events at least at this time. ISM: Approximately when do you expect to hold both events? JF: The LV Awards event is around April 2011. There will be a few events in between leading up to the main event. For further information check our website. ISM: Who is collaborating with you to bring this event to life? Are you getting the support that you need from other salsa organizers and promoters? JF: This is a strictly LV Salsa project. ISM: How is the current economy affecting Vegas? JF: Well, I think tourism in Vegas is down and it has picked up a little and I think it will continue to pick up. The casinos are constantly working to make it affordable for people to come to Vegas whether by reducing the rates or room fees, there are many incentives to bring people in. ISM: How is your business doing right now with the current economy?

ISM: What is it about salsa that you like? JF: Everything! The music is great, the moves are sexy and elegant and the people are very nice and respectful. I have not seen a fight yet. People are very nice and friendly, everybody dances with everybody, and I like all these things about salsa. ISM: I think you are doing a great job and your passion for salsa is what is going to get you there. JF: I am for sure it will get to that point and it is set in my mind that is going to happen. I wish it will happen tomorrow, but I have to take the time if I want to do it right and to put everything in place properly. ISM: If tonight was your opening night, with which band would you open with? JF: That is actually a hard thing to answer because all the bands that I talk to I like. JF: We are still here; the economy has affected everyone including us! We are making it through each month and each month that we are here is a good thing for me. I am still in business and that is great news! I am not expecting to make lots of money this year like other businesses so I am really thankful that I am still in business and not out of business. We are struggling, but still in business. I am pretty confident that it will not stay like this. There are lots of things that I am doing and will be doing to keep the business going and bringing new business in. The economy has affected lots of businesses, but you have to think outside the box on how to generate business, people still need a mattress to sleep on! The advertisement has to be different on how to capture peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention than before.

JF: You know there are some people that are doing salsa nights and I go to them to support them. Like I said, I do not see them as competition and I am happy, the more clubs that open the better. I love salsa, the more they open the more dancing for me to do!

JF: No, not at all! I think people will be open to salsa. In fact, people talk about bringing more culture to Vegas so that is something wonderful and people are happy to hear about it. Hola Simón - cómo nace la idea de un grupo como DLC*SÜDSOUND, tan lejos del Caribe donde la salsa tiene sus orígenes? La idea del proyecto DLC*SÜDSOUND de gesta a finales del 2008 cuando conozco en Berlín a nuestro director musical César Díaz y le planteo la idea de organizar una banda que bajo ciertos criterios y con el hilo conductor de la salsa fusione diferentes géneros. Teníamos un interés musical común, César tiene un amplio background en el área de la salsa, nos gusta y eso fue suficiente para aceptar la invitación y ya. De ahí en adelante todo se empieza a desarrollar y a ver es cuando nos sentamos a trabajar. En el 2009 encarna la idea en un grupo de músicos radicados en Berlín, mucho de ellos latinoamericanos, lejos de casa, pero sin que eso signifique apartarse de la música latinoamericana… por el contrario, esa latente inquietud por estar en contacto con ella nos une y empezamos a ensayar y a darle forma a esto. Y el “Después le cuento” ? Cuéntanos ahora… DLC significa “Después Le Cuento”… un juego de palabras… después le cuento… SÜDSOUND… sonido del sur… un poco haciendo referencia a Suramérica, embrión del proyecto y por otro lado al sur de Berlín, donde está el barrio Neukölln, donde “el bebé” aprendió a caminar… SÜDSOUND es un homenaje más a los primeros pasos con lo que empezó esto, a los orígenes que nunca se olvidarán.

Cómo definirías el tipo de música que presentan? Como una simple referencia lo denominamos “Berliner Salsa” para que los que les gusta clasificar tanto la salsa y se interesan por esas cosas, no piensen que somos salsa cubana, puertoriqueña o de NY interpretada desde Berlín. Lo que hacemos es una fusión que bajo el hilo conductor de la Salsa y teniendo muy presente todo lo que nos da una ciudad como Berlín, combina el Funk, el Jazz, el Hip-Hop y el Rock con el Latin y en especial la Salsa. Música mestiza a lo latino-berlinés. Cuantos miembros forman la banda - y sus orígenes. La base de la banda somos 6 integrantes: César Díaz de Colombia en el piano, Diego Sposito de Venezuela en el Bajo, Jean Luc Jossa de Luxemburgo en las congas, percusión mejor y scratching, Rafa “Felo” Martínez de Cuba en la voz, Marco “Foxy” Fox de Berlín en la batería y el Hermano Simón de Colombia en la voz, guitarra y samplers. Sobre el escenario somos generalmente 8 músicos, ya que contamos con la colaboración de otros músicos de Cuba y Alemania que interpretan los vientos. Fuera del escenario hay un equipo de colaboradores principalmente de Colombia que nos ayudan en la parte visual y de diseño. Esa “multiculturalidad” le debe dar matices especiales a DLC* SÜDSOUND. Como manejan ustedes este “mestizaje” de manera que el público entienda lo que quieren transmitir?

Acaban de finalizar su primer disco - Cuáles son las metas a corto plazo de DLC*SÜDSOUND?

Tu eres el escritor de la gran mayoría de las letras - cuál es la canción más especial, desde el punto de vista personal?

Que no olviden que el éxito no se mide por el dinero, y si no, que se lo pregunten a los hombres más ricos de los hospitales o vean a los más ricos de los cementerios. El dinero no se puede ver como una finalidad, es más bien un resultado. Que recuerden que el éxito es lo que más fracasa y por eso hay que ser cada día “conscientemente” mejor que ayer y cultivar las relaciones humanas. Paciencia, organización, mucho pero mucho positivismo y disfrutar del proceso y del “hoy” mientras que se alcanzan las metas o el éxito propuesto… eso no puede ser tan difícil si se tiene completamente claro para dónde se va… si no, es un problema. Acabamos de terminar un EP con 6 tracks, producido en Berlín en los estudios del músico e ingeniero argentino Nacho Delgado. Vamos a lanzarlo oficialmente en el 2011 y con ello queremos darlo a conocer a la escena y al circuito de las músicas del mundo, para tocar, tocar y tocar… , eso es lo que queremos ahora, después de eso vienen las metas a mediano y largo plazo, pero primero lo primero.

Qué deseas recomendarle a todos aquellos músicos que desean hacerse a “la mar” y buscar el éxito por estos horizontes?

El fenómeno de la multiculturalidad es algo que dejó de ser distintivo de sólo ciertas ciudades del mundo, como lo fue en su momento NY, Londres, Barcelona, Berlín etc etc etc… hoy en día, de la mano de la globalización… sobre todo cultural, gente de todo el mundo se reúne en muchísimos más rincones y lugares del planeta a intercambiar ideas, cultura, formas de pensar; y esto se ha convertido en un fenómeno del diario vivir en muchos campos, como lo es el arte. Esto ha permitido y a “bien acostumbrado” al público a que esté más abierto a aprender y conocer nuevas cosas, nuevas combinaciones o cosas raras… y en ese camino de construir tolerancia estamos todos los proyectos con matices multiculturales… la gente está más abierta a entender lo que queremos transmitir… lo que nosotros hacemos es sólo trabajar duro para hacerlo de la mejor forma.

De nuestro nuevo trabajo, estoy muy ligado a dos canciones: “El Abogado Musical” que es una canción que invita a vivir la vida propia, la que queremos y no la que quieren nuestros padres o la sociedad en que vivimos, no olvidando que es muy corto el camino y recordando que el mejor momento para retomarlo fue ayer, pero el segundo mejor momento es ahora. Por otra parte “Tumbao Disonao” me identifica mucho por ser una canción que lleva un mensaje de fuerza y positivismo para todo el que esté lejos de casa y vive el fenómeno de la inmigración. Desde Alemania AZUCAR CUBANA

¿COMO SE CREO AZÚCAR CUBANA? AZUCAR CUBANA se crea en primer lugar gracias a mi esposa Waltraud Hernández, la cual me dio el iniciativo apoyo y la idea de crear mi propia agrupación musical, dónde pudiera exponer el sentir de mis raíces cubanas. Y la información que traía dentro de mi fue gracias a mi padre Obdulio Hernández, el cual fue violinista y fundador de algunas Orquestas en la región de Florida, Camagüey en Cuba, esta información y si se puede llamar influencia me dieron la posibilidad de crear mi agrupación con la idea de crear y hacer algo que sonara un poquito diferente a lo que ya se escuchaba y se bailaba en Europa. Entonces nace Azúcar Cubana, en la cual empezamos a fusionar casi todos los ritmos. Puesto que ya existía un público que comenzaba a exigir algo nuevo y contagioso. Por esto doy gracia a dios y a la música por permitirme tener Azúcar Cubana. ¿Cuántos integrantes tiene Azúcar Cubana y de qué se encarga cada uno? La agrupación se compone de diferentes formaciones y diferentes componentes: Yanet Hernández- Guitarra-Vocal-Director Alfredo Sandoval Instrumentista- Piano Israel Suarez -Percusión Mayor -Vocal Julio Sanches -Percusión Menor-Vocal Humberto Zaldivar-Trompeta ¿Azúcar Cubana se formo en Alemania, o salió de Cuba? Azúcar cubana se forma en Alemania, gracias a la influencia, al conocimiento y al deseo que traía conmigo de hacer

algo nuevo, pues ya existía un público nuevo que bailaba y conocía una gran cantidad de géneros musicales, desde el Son más tradicional hasta el Vals más clásico. ¿Por qué decidieron formar un grupo de salsa y no de otro género? En realidad todo tiene un motivo y un porque, nos decidimos a crear una agrupación que pudiera fusionar la música cubana con otros ritmos, a pesar de tocar pura salsa, o puro Son tradicional, el mercado y el público buscaban algo nuevo pero que no estuviera fuera de la Salsa y gracias al talento de los músicos que componen la agrupación, fusionamos Reggaetón, Samba, Mambo, Merengue, etc., todo esto sin dejar de ser Salseros. ¿Se les hizo difícil comenzar con una banda de salsa en Alemania, un país tan distinto a los países del Caribe? Todo al empezar siempre resulta un poco difícil, nada se crea fácil pues fácil se rompe, la música no tiene fronteras es una magia que todo el mundo puede comprender y asimila. En gran parte de Europa ya existían otras agrupaciones que empezaban a tocar salsa, existía una brecha, pero como todo mercado el cliente siempre exige lo mejor, y entonces se alumbro el camino y nace Azúcar cubana una nueva agrupación llena de talento, alegría y dulzura que nos identifica. ¿En qué se inspiran para componer su música? La inspiración es como el Aire que te toca y no lo ves. Estas en la casa, en el tren, en un concierto, te encuentras triste, emocionado, romántico y llega esa musa que se llama inspiración y por otra parte la exigencia del publico que siempre espera algo nuevo, lo mejor de ti. Y entonces llega

el momento de crear lo mejor que puedas crear para estar contento contigo mismo, y para hacer feliz al público que espera tu mejor resultado. ¿Quién es su máster salsero? Mi máster salsero es mi padre que me dio la herencia musical que traigo en mi sangre, y la posibilidad de conocer este mundo tan hermoso y amplio que es la música. A pesar que tengo un gran respeto a todos esas grandes figuras de nuestra música, pues gracias a ellos tenemos un amplio patrón e información que nos dejaron a las nuevas generaciones de músicos. A esas grandes figuras mi respeto y mi total agradecimiento ¿En cuales otros países se han presentado? Azúcar cubana ha tenido el privilegio si se puede llama de este modo de ofrecer su música en diferentes países, por citar algunos, Checoslovaquia, Suiza, Austria, Italia, etc. Los shows de Azúcar Cubana son muy completos incluyendo Bailarinas y a veces hasta instrucciones de baile. ¿Cómo surgió esa idea? La idea surgió como surgió la de crear una agrupación, el mercado siempre busca algo fresco y nuevo, y nace la idea de formar un cuerpo de baile el cual se encargara de exponerle al público demostraciones de bailes, modernos y tradicionales. Y al mismo tiempo llenar de colorido las presentaciones con las hermosas ropas que visten nuestras bailarinas creadas por la mano y diseño de mi señora y manager Waltraud Hernández.

¿Tienen alguna anécdota? La vida como tal está llena de anécdotas, solo que en ocasiones existen buenas y malas. La más mala de mi vida fue tocar un concierto sin tener el conocimiento de que mi madre había fallecido, esto no fue fácil de superar. Y la mejor anécdota que tengo en mi vida es haber tocado un concierto para mí misma boda, haberle cantado a mis invitados y a la mujer que más amo en este mundo! Doy gracias a la música y a mi Dios por permitirme ponerle música a mis amaneceres, a mis alegrías, a mis tristezas, a mis pasiones. Sin música no tuviera anécdotas. En nombre de Azúcar cubana de la música y de la salsa les doy mis mayor agradecimiento por tomar un minuto de su tiempo al escuchar nuestra música y permitirnos esta oportunidad. Yanet & Wally.

¿Cómo han evolucionado desde la primera vez que se formo el grupo? La evolución siempre es necesaria pues siempre hay ideas frescas, más exigencias más gusto, esto te hace evolucionar desde el principio hasta siempre habrá evolución en Azúcar cubana. Siempre que exista la alegría y el deseo de hacer un buen trabajo abra evolución.

¿Cuál presentación fue la más memorable y por que? En la vida de un artista siempre existe una gran presentación no importa la dimensión de la misma sino el sentido espiritual que te ha brindado. Recuerdo un concierto organizado por Sparkasse en Hochsauerland en la cual participaron otras agrupaciones y en la cual estuve la dicha de ser invitado con Azúcar cubana. En este concierto se recaudaban fondos para los niños enfermos de cáncer y necesitados del mundo, pero para gran sorpresa de mis compañeros y mía en este gran evento donde participaban aproximadamente 2000 a 3000 personas se vendían discos destinados a esta ayuda, y para gran orgullo mío supe en ese mismo momento que el disco contenía 3 temas de Azúcar cubana. Para mí fue una tremenda emoción.

¿Cómo definen el estilo de Azúcar cubana? Definir nuestro estilo no es nada difícil pues ya el público nos conoce y nos sigue, somos músicos capaces de brindar nuestra alegría, nuestra dulzura, en cualquier género que nuestro público bailador lo pida. Hay que ser capaz de satisfacer a la gran mayoría de gustos sin dejar de ser salseros, por eso somos Azúcar cubana.

¿Como es proceso de composición para ustedes? Componer no es nada fácil eso tiene que estar dentro de ti, esa musa que uno piensa que llega pero en realidad está dentro y sale por cualquier circunstancia emocional de tu vida y en ese momento no importa el día, el lugar ni la hora, y nacen ideas, palabras, poemas a los cuales te ves necesitado de ponerle música, y es cuando comienzas a entender todo lo llevas dentro.

This is Eva Allyón, the great lady of Afro-Peruvian music, in a performance at the San Francisco Jazz Festival in 2005. Allyón is a superstar in her own country but unfortunately not well known here. She does Salsa along with music that has more Peruvian roots. The cajón, a wooden box beaten as a drum, is prominent in what her band plays. The concert was at the Herbst Theater downtown, which is a smaller, almost intimate venue. I was able to shoot from the wings. I used a 300mm lens on a monopod at f/2.8 and 1/60 of a second. She was really quite a ways away from me, but the lens brought me close. It’s a portrait with motion of a great talent with a face that shows both experience and exuberance. I would recommend checking out any of her records, if you can find them.

Las Congas

El tambor de conga fue adaptado de África donde esto comenzó como un tronco ahuecado y con una piel clavado sobre la apertura de un extremo. Esto tomó varias formas y tamaños para variar su sonido. En su forma presente, la conga tiene una piel que se puede afinar y que se conoce también como una tumbadora.

La conga se golpea solamente con las manos, sin ningún otro elemento percutor. Como la mayoría de los membranófonos latinoamericanos que han perdurado, su parche originalmente estaba hecho de cuero animal, pero actualmente se fabrica con plástico, lo que lo hace más resistente y le modifica sensiblemente el timbre. El ejecutante de congas puede tocar sentado o de pie. Es habitual que la conga se presente por pares sobre un trípode, como ocurre con las timbaletas, aunque también las podemos encontrar con un formato de tres, cuatro y hasta cinco congas (lo cual no es tan habitual).

Posee características similares, en cuanto a la forma, a los bongós, pero con una caja bastante más larga. Su técnica es notablemente diferente. Existen varios golpes: • Tono abierto (open tone) • Tono tapado (muffled tone) • Seco (slap) • Bajo de palma (bass) • Manoteo Talón-Punta (talón de mano-punta de dedos) (heel-toe) En la escritura musical, cada uno de estos toques tiene un símbolo que los representa.

Tipos de congas

Hay hasta 5 tipos de congas, que se diferencian por su tamaño y afinación, de más agudo a más grave: • Re-quinto: conga de cuerpo delgado de afinación aguda. Su función en la rumba es improvisar. • Quinto: conga de cuerpo delgado de afinación aguda. • Macho, 3-2 o Conga: de cuerpo mediano, se puede afinar de 2 formas: una es más aguda para poder tocar como tumbadora central en formato de dos o más congas; la otra es más grave para poder tocar únicamente esa tumbadora en la rumba. • Hembra o Tumbadora: afinación grave, su cuerpo es más ancho. • Re-tumbadora: es la más grave de todas, su cuerpo es más ancho que todas las demás. Normalmente nos encontramos el formato de “Conga-Tumba” o “Quinto-conga”. En el caso de utilizar tres, lo más habitual es el formato “quinto-conga-tumba”. Las congas se manufacturan de distintos tipos de materiales. El más utilizado es la madera pero las hay construidas de fibra de vidrio o “fiberglass”; hay modelos viejos manufacturados en metal. Unesco’s Intergovernmental Committee of Intangible Heritage granted the dance and its music protected cultural status in October 2009. For us Finns Tango is a matter of heart. The week-long international Festival with its’ unique program at the darkest and coldest time of the year will bring us the warmth and

light we so much crave during the polar night. Every day of the Festival will feature a highquality program with musical and dance events. On Saturday the Oulu Tango Week will culminate with the Festival Concert at Pohjankartano, in which Guardia Nueva will perform Argentinean tangos with soloists Matti Korkiala and Angelika Klas. To replace them, we invited Kyle Reed and Sarah Van Drake, one of the most famous couple in US. We hope you will appreciate them for their professional behavior and teaching. Finland Bachata Festival is organized by Bachata Ambassador Vesa Parkkari and his production company Nabeina Oy. Vesa has visited Dominican Republic 14 times within 20 years. During these years the country, scenery, culture, music and dance have become familiar. Esta suma de textos de valor fundamental para la historia de la música urbana venezolana, recoge el fervor sistemático de Federico Pacanins durante casi treinta años de investigación. Tropicalia Caraqueña comprende ensayos, reportajes, entrevistas, crónicas, cronologías, algunos de ellos fueron publicados en las revistas y periódicos de los que Pacanins es colaborador, y otros muchos han permanecido inéditos. Los éditos, por otra parte, han sido trabajados desde sus versiones originales en tal magnitud que la mayoría son sustancialmente distintos.

Agudeza, penetración, información de primera mano a través de entrevistas memorables, asistencia a muchos ensayos y conciertos, viajes iluminadores, adquisición de una montaña de discos y de allí un buen gusto para escoger con criterio la música más elaborada , los textos más originales y representativos y los personajes perdurables, todo un cúmulo precioso de datos que nos brindó en una síntesis agradable y apasionada, en la cual plasmó más de tres decenios misteriosos e inquietantes, que ya son parte de esa realización histórica y musical que logró proyectarse, colocarse e influir a nivel planetario con toda su contundencia.

Community leaders and doctors already report elevated rates of cancer in the region, as well as birth defects. Photographers Lou Dematteis and Kayana Szymczak have documented the physical and emotional reality of those affected by this toxic contamination, roughly 30 times greater than the more widely reported Exxon Valdez spill.

Orquesta formada por Cristian González y la fusión de la orquesta de Sabor Cubano cuyo director es Arguelles Puey “Mambi” quién comenzó a grabar en el año 1979 en Cuba con éxitos como “Mambo Bohemio” y “Yegua”. El trabajo musical de Cristian González “Con todo el sabor” grabado en el 2000, trajo un remarcable éxito en el mundo musical, que incluyo el tema “AVENTURERA” el cual los ha motivado para continuar produciendo álbumes de gran impacto. Para el año 2001 se grabó la producción “Baile de Rumba,” destacándose el tema “Lagrimas Negras”. En los años siguientes se han logrado posicionar temas como: Te fuiste, Llegamos durísimos, Seductora rumba y Aquella noche. En el 2006 se proyectó con gran aceptación el tema “Amé todo de ti” y “Naufrago de amor”. Entre el 2007 y 2008 se grabaron temas como El mensajero del amor y Como quisiera decirte; este último se firmo con Sony BMG Music para un CD variado de salsa llamado “La sucursal de la Salsa”. A comienzos del 2009 se posicionaron dos nuevos temas, La chica de la bella mirada y Si me quieres querer Letra y Música David César, con las voces de Cristian González y Jorge Murillo. The complete album, Creencias, is due out by the end of January 2011, and expect nothing but hardcore salsa.
