Roberto Ricci Incontrare il pubblico nel nome del mare. Navigando a vela, salendo su una tavola da surf, gareggiando per arrivare primi. Oppure semplicemente leggendo un libro dove il mare è il protagonista indiscusso. Ci è riuscito Roberto Ricci, creatore e titolare del marchio RRD - Roberto Ricci Design - che, nella primavera scorsa, ha radunato, nel suo showroom milanese, diversi numeri uno delle competizioni sportive in mare. Pubblico e personaggi noti dello sport si sono confrontati sulle parole scritte di Sea on words – Parole da aMare, rassegna che parte nel 2016 da un progetto editoriale voluto da RRD che ha rieditato titoli celebri di opere che hanno il mare come fonte d’ispirazione, tra questi Il Conte di Montecristo di A. Dumas, Navigando da solo intorno al mondo di Joshua Slocum e Moitessier. La lunga rotta di un uomo libero di Gabriele Musante. Due volte l’anno sono realizzate edizioni limitate, arricchite anche da contributi speciali, regalate poi ai clienti. Quest’anno si sono aggiunti gli incontri dal vivo che hanno offerto la possibilit di conoscere persone dalle storie straordinarie, tutti pezzi importanti della comunit del mare. Tra questi, Giovanni Soldini e Alessandra Sensini, ma iniziamo proprio da Roberto Ricci. Grossetano di nascita, anzi, come dice lui, maremmano. Giovane leva del windsurf, impara a conoscere subito i segreti dei guru del surf alle Hawaii. La sua vita infatti si divide tra il Tirreno toscano e l’Oceano di Maui. Roberto non si accontenta di gareggiare, vuole rendere le performance sempre più avvincenti e per farlo deve lavorare sulla strumentazione: «Ecco perché nasce RRD: volevo tavole speciali, pezzi unici progettati e realizzati a mano e destinati a vincere le gare sulle onde di tutto il mondo». L’atleta toscano diventa così shaper, colui che progetta e realizza le tavole. Oggi RRD copre tutti i fabbisogni dell’appassionato di sport acquatici, ma veste anche chi predilige un look casual e tecnico, grazie al tandem con il direttore creativo Roberto Bardini. Sea on words nasce anche in chiave “anti-digitale”, come racconta Ricci: «Volevo qualcosa che si avvicinasse ai tempi del mare e ho pensato ai libri, anziché a un progetto sui social. Il libro lo puoi dimenticare e poi ritrovare. E poi mi riporta alle mie letture da bambino, l’Isola del tesoro o lo stesso Navigando da solo intorno al mondo di Joshua Slocum che è stato un testo fondamentale nel guidarmi, lì ho colto il senso di libertà che dà il mare.

Mi piace raccontare storie di mare ed è bello portarle in città, per mettere il naso uori dall ufficio» Erano gli anni ’90 quando Ricci prendeva aerei su aerei per raggiungere le onde più alte e ricorda così quei momenti: «Spiagge, giornate all’aria aperta, tavole e amici. Non sono un navigatore solitario, ho sempre amato di più l’idea delle tribù che ti accolgono in qualunque posto di mare si arrivi. La competizione è legata più allo sviluppo dei miei prodotti, che sono progettati per vincere». Sono pensati anche per essere sostenibili, perché il tema del rispetto ambientale in fatto di mare e oceano è sempre più urgente. «Nel packaging dell’attrezzatura tecnica abbiamo eliminato la plastica. Utilizziamo solo carta, così se qualcosa nisce in acqua non cosa irreparabile. Nell’abbigliamento invece abbiamo messo a punto una lycra prodotta al 100 per 100 con scarti di produzione industriale». Giovanni Soldini è invece il simbolo della navigazione solitaria. Milanese, forse impara prima ad andare a vela che a camminare. 25 anni di regate oceaniche alle spalle, tra cui due giri del mondo in solitario (l’Around Alone, vinto nel 1999 e passato alla storia per il salvataggio di Isabelle Autissier, e il oc hallenge del , dove si ualifica secondo nella classe 50 piedi) e più di 40 transoceaniche. Lo incontriamo che ha da poco portato a casa una serie di vittorie e di record con il Maserati Multi70, ma con lui parliamo soprattutto di futuro e del suo impegno per l’ambiente, nato dall’osservazione diretta di un mare sempre più sfruttato, soffocato e in uinato. i libri in barca non ne ha tanti, confessa: «Quando sei in solitaria, su una barca da corsa, se hai un attimo di riposo pensi a dormire! La gara ti assorbe totalmente. Una volta a terra anche io ho i miei miti letterari, come Slocum e Moitessier, non solo navigatori ma esploratori. Oggi non c’è più nulla di vergine da scoprire, però il mare continua a donarmi una dimensione più vera e umana. Ecco perché, anche tra vent’anni, mi vedo in barca, perché è una vita votata all’essenziale, al contatto con la natura, che ti obbliga a essere rispettoso. Roberto Ricci, appassionato di windsurf, atleta e imprenditore di origini toscane, nei mesi invernali si trasferisce in Sudafrica per fare ricerca per la sua attività. In Sudafrica prova le tavole, i prodotti, va in acqua con gli atleti, realizza video, foto, si occupa della parte tecnica, sperimentando attrezzature in un Oceano molto simile a quello delle Hawaii, con vento molto forte e onde grandi. Da marzo a dicembre vive in Italia, dove continua l’attività di test e dove lavora con il team dell’abbigliamento. Nel 1988 ha fondato il suo brand, lanciando nell’anno successivo la prima collezione composta da tavole da windsurf, pantaloncini mare, t-shirt e bermuda. Negli anni è stata aggiunta la collezione invernale e una linea tecno-sartoriale.

Come a un pranzo o una cena con i fiocchi. n i, non neanche veramente così, perché Soldini è noto per preparare diversi manicaretti con la pentola a pressione: «Ci cuocio anche la pasta! Aiuta a sprecare meno acqua dolce e meno gas e poi mi sono perfezionato, tant’è che Lagostina (la storica azienda piemontese di pentole) ha notato i miei post e ne è nata una collaborazione, sempre all’insegna dello zero sprechi». Altra collaborazione in nome della lotta all’inquinamento dei mari è il progetto Ocean Literacy promosso dall’Unesco e di cui Soldini è ambassador. A chi va per mare da decadi come lui è inevitabile chiedere come sta il mare realmente e la risposta del velista è dura, ma ottimista: «30 anni fa veder galleggiare un pezzo di plastica in alto mare era una rarità, oggi è la consuetudine. Abbiamo ammalato gli oceani, ma si può arrestare questa deriva. Penso sempre a quando ero bambino e mia madre mi teneva lontano dal bagnasciuga perché era sporco di catrame. Il problema si risolse pensando a petroliere con il doppio fondo. Fu posta una questione e fu trovata una soluzione. Dobbiamo fare lo stesso per le plastiche, ma farlo veramente e presto». La più vincente di tutti però è stata Alessandra Sensini, quattro volte campionessa olimpica e sportiva del mare a 360 gradi, entrata per sempre nella storia dei cinque cerchi della vela. Anche lei grossetana e amica di Roberto Ricci - le cui tavole sono state spesso compagne di vittoria di Alessandra - ha poi proseguito per una carriera dirigenziale all’interno dei più importanti organi sportivi nazionali, fino a diventare vicepresidente oni. Oggi la sua passione per il mare e per la natura ha un nome: Water World, il polo multisportivo che gestisce a Marina di Grosseto e che ha inaugurato le sue attivit proprio uest estate. nche a lei chiediamo che tipo di rapporto ha con il mare: «Mio padre è stato tra i primi sub della Maremma e ha portato me e le mie tre sorelle subito in acqua e in barca a vela. Ho sempre trascorso le estati al largo delle isole toscane. Inoltre teneva al fatto che facessimo tanto sport e assecondava il mio spirito competitivo. Così mi ritrovai a 15 anni a vincere un campionato juniores di surf e a volare all’estero per la prima volta per una gara internazionale. Già lì capii che il surf poteva essere il mio futuro. Alessandra Sensini, campionessa olimpica e sportiva del mare a 360 gradi, è l’atleta femminile nella storia della vela olimpica italiana più vincente in assoluto.

Alessandra Sensini, grossetana di nascita, respira e i e il mare fin da piccola insieme a tutta la sua famiglia, passione che la porta alla prima partecipazione olimpica nel 1992 a Barcellona. Da allora ha a rontato un percorso per a nare la propria tecnica fino alla prima medaglia di bronzo ad Atlanta nel 1996 nella categoria windsurf “Mistral”. Da qui il passaggio alle Olimpiadi di Sidney quattro anni dopo e la vittoria dell’oro olimpico. In carriera ha vinto 10 titoli mondiali, 5 titoli europei, 2 titoli ai Giochi del Mediterraneo, una World Cup del Circuito professionistico Windsurf e 23 titoli italiani. Nel 2000 e nel 2004 le è stato conferito il Collare d’Oro del Coni, nel 2006 ha ottenuto il Diploma d’onore, nel 2008 ha vinto l’Isaf World Sailor of the Year a Madrid per essere l’unica donna al mondo ad aver conquistato 4 medaglie olimpiche consecutive nella vela. Dopo la carriera agonistica ha ricoperto importanti ruoli dirigenziali tra cui quello di membro del Consiglio Nazionale del Coni in rappresentanza degli atleti (dal 2000 al 2004), membro del Consiglio Nazionale della Fiv (dal 2001 al 2012), Vice Chairman del indsurfing ommittee nell Isa , Vicepresidente della Federvela (dal 2009 al 2012), Team Manager del Consorzio Azzurra alla Louis Vuitton Cup di Nizza del 2009, dal 2017 al 2021 è stata Vice Presidente del Coni.

Devi essere brava ad anticipare l’imprevisto e quindi stare sempre all’attacco. Poi c’è la paura e deve esserci perché ti tiene sempre all’erta. È la paura che ti aiuta a elaborare velocemente strategie per uscire da qualche impasse. C’è poi la paura della competizione, la paura di sbagliare e devo dire che la routine della gara aiuta a tenerla a bada». Lontana da quel tipo di adrenalina da un po’, la Sensini continua a mettersi alla prova in altri sport e ci racconta di un giro impegnativo fatto in Sardegna: «Con Jury Chechi e Max Lelli abbiamo fatto una settimana in bici con tappe di oltre 100 chilometri al giorno: pensavo di non farcela, ma durante la cronoscalata di 40 chilometri l’ultimo giorno ho ritrovato l’adrenalina di un tempo che mi ha lasciato una carica interiore pazzesca». Ora tutto il suo impegno di sportiva, di educatrice e anche di manager è concentrato in Water World che accoglierà soprattutto scolaresche dall’Italia e dall’estero, ma è aperta anche agli adulti che vorranno cimentarsi nei tanti sport d’acqua, dal windsurf al windfoil, passando per wingfoil, kite, surf e ovviamente vela. Ci saranno gare e stage tecnici, ma anche una biblioteca del mare creata in collaborazione con l’Università di Siena e che avrà un angolo dedicato alla biologia del mare e all’ecologia.

Giovanni Soldini was born in Milan on 16 May 1966. He is the last of three sons of Adolfo Soldini, a textile entrepreneur. He showed a keen interest in sailing from the very beginning to the point that he crossed the Atlantic Ocean when he was only 16 years old. From that moment on, it has een ery di c lt to se arate him from boats, and over the years his successes started to pile up quickly. A specialist in solo sailing, Giovanni faces the sea with respect and determination, without ever abandoning his values. In 1999, precisely those values drove him to not hesitate for a moment in abandoning the main course of a major regatta to save French sailor Isabelle Autissier, whose life was in danger in the ocean after her boat capsized due to bad weather. This act of bravery earned him the Gold Medal of Merit of the Italian Navy. Meeting the audience in the name of the sea, sailing, getting on a surfboard, competing to win, or simply reading a book in which the sea is the unquestioned protagonist. Roberto Ricci, the creator, and owner of the RRD brand - Roberto Ricci Design – succeeded in doing this: he gathered several number ones of sea sports competitions. The audience and wellknown sports personalities discussed the written words of Sea on words - Parole da aMare (Words to Love), a festival that is the brainchild of an editorial project launched by RRD in 2016. Twice a year, the brand publishes limited editions, which are enriched with special contributions and given as gifts to customers. This year, the event was expanded with live meetings, offering attendees the opportunity to meet people with extraordinary stories; all important personalities in the community of the sea. These include Giovanni Soldini and Alessandra Sensini, but let’s begin with Roberto Ricci. Born in Grosseto, or rather, as he says, in the Maremma, as a young windsurfer, he uickly learned the secrets of the surfing gurus in Hawaii. His life was soon split between the Tuscan Tyrrhenian Sea and the ocean around Maui. Roberto did not settle for competing, however. He wanted to make his performances even more engaging, and to do so, he had to find the right tools «that’s how RRD was born; I wanted special boards, uniquely designed and handmade pieces destined to win races on waves all over the world». The Tuscan athlete thus became a shaper, someone who designs and makes surfboards. Today RRD meets all the needs of water sports enthusiasts but also equips those who prefer a casual and technical look, thanks to the partnership with creative director Roberto Bardini. Sea on words was also born in an “anti-digital” perspective, as Ricci explains: «I wanted something in line with the times of the sea, and I came up with books rather than a project for social networks. You can forget a book and then nd it a ain nd then it ta es e bac to my childhood readings, Treasure Island or Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum which was a vital text in guiding me, that book made me grasp the sense of freedom that the sea can give you. I like to tell stories of the sea, and it’s nice to bring them into the city to stick your head out o the office no and then» t as in the 1990s when Ricci used to take plane after plane to reach the highest waves, and he likes to remember those moments: «Beaches, days spent outdoors, surfboards and friends. I am not a solitary sailor, I have always loved the idea of tribes that welcome you in whatever sea location you reach. The competition is more about developing my products, which are designed to win». They are also designed to be sustainable because the issue of environmental protection when it comes to the sea and oceans, is increasingly pressing. «In the packaging of our technical equipment, we have eliminated plastic. We only use paper, so if something ends up in the water it is not something irreparable. For our apparel, on the other hand, we have developed a kind of lycra which is 100% made from industrial production waste». Giovanni Soldini is the symbol of solo sailing. We met him as he had recently achieved a series of victories and records with the Maserati Multi70.

We mainly talked about the future and about his commitment to the environment, which was triggered by his direct observation of an increasingly exploited, choked, and polluted sea. He does not have many books in the boat, he confesses: «When you are sailing solo, on a racing boat, if you have a second to rest you think about sleeping! The race absorbs you. Once ashore I have my literary legends too, like Slocum and Moitessier, who are not just sailors but also explorers. Today there is no longer any virgin land, anything yet to be discovered, but the sea continues to give me a more authentic and human dimension. That is why, even in 20 years, I see myself on a boat, because it is a life devoted to the essentials, the contact with nature, which forces you to be respectful. What has always fascinated me about sailing is that you could leave from La Spezia and arrive in Auckland with 50 liters of Diesel: you are independent, but you have to make some sacri ces» Like fancy lunches or dinners. But in reality, that’s not even true, because Soldini is known for preparing many delicacies with a pressure cooker: «I even cook pasta in it! It helps to waste less fresh water and less gas and then I gradually improved my technique, so much so that Lagostina (the historic Piedmontese cookware company) spotted my posts and we created a partnership, always in the na e o zero aste» Another partnership in the name of fighting ocean pollution is the Ocean Literacy project promoted by UNESCO for which Soldini is an ambassador. With someone like him who has been sailing the seas for decades, you cannot avoid asking how the sea is doing, and the sailor’s answer is harsh but optimistic: «30 years ago, seein a iece o lastic oatin on the hi h seas was rare but today it has become the rule. and a good friend of Roberto Ricci’s – whose surfboards often accompanied Alessandra during her victories. She then continued onto an executive career within the most important Italian sports institutions and bodies, until becoming the vice-president of Coni. Today her passion for the sea and nature has a name: Water World, the multi-sports center she runs in Marina di Grosseto, which inaugurated its activities this summer. With the sea, on the other hand, I have always had a ‘friendly’ relationship: it must be your companion if you want to achieve a result. When it is your enemy, you won’t reach any results. You have to be good at anticipating the unexpected and always be on the attack. Then there is fear and it has to be there because it always keeps you vigilant. Fear helps you to quickly develop strategies to get out of some deadlock. Then there is the fear of competition, the fear of making mistakes, and I must say that the routine of the competition helps to keep the under control» Though she has been away from that kind of adrenaline for a while, Sensini continues to test herself in other sports and tells us about a challenging ride she had in Sardinia: «Together with Jury Chechi and Max Lelli we did a week’s cycling with legs of over 100 kilometers a day: I thought I wouldn’t make it, but during the 40-kilometer uphill time trial on the last day I regained the adrenalin of the past, which left me with an a azin inner ener » Now all her efforts as a sportswoman, educator, and also as a manager are concentrated in Water World, which will mainly welcome schoolchildren from Italy and abroad, but is also open to adults who would like to try their hand at the many water sports, from windsurfing to wind foiling, including wing foiling, kiting, surfing and, of course, sailing. There will be competitions and technical workshops, but also a sea library created in cooperation with the University of Siena which will have a spot dedicated to sea biology and ecology.
