Elton John will rock McDonald Jones Stadium during an upcoming international tour as the first major event in a partnership between City of Newcastle and Venues NSW. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour concert will be the first time Elton has performed in Newcastle with previous visits to the area, landing him on stages in the Hunter Valley. The show is bound to be a sellout show, filling the stadium's 30,000 seats. The additional capacity will change the touring landscape, with lots of tours not leaving the capital cities due to the size of the production and the ability to be able to sell enough tickets to cover the cost of the tour. Elton John is also one of those artists that are not only pulling a crowd from a certain demographic. He would, at this point, be considered a heritage artist who has gained a new audience during every generational shift. Thanks to the irreverent songs written by him and Bernie Taupin, his music has certainly stood the test of time.

Thanks to Almost Famous, people who weren't born when he began his career knew all the words to Tiny Dancer. Thanks also to the movie Sing, my 11-year-old sings along passionately to I'm Still Standing when it comes on, and PNAU's remix of Cold Heart, which samples several of Elton's songs, is a constant on our current Spotify playlist in the car. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said, "Newcastle is once again showing Australia and the world that we're a global events city, attracting one of the biggest names in music, Elton John, to play a stadium concert in front of thousands of cheering Novocastrians and tourists,". Between The Rocket Man hitting the Newcastle city limits on January 10 and at least three as yet unannounced international tours set to head to the Hunter this summer, for the first time in a few years, locals will once again be spoiled for choice. We are all thrilled to have found our way back.
