Get a Jump-Start On Christmas
WORDS DI VON ESSEN
For years it seemed that we had to wait until the end of November before we would start seeing decorations in stores, Christmas paraphernalia being sold in shops or reading about upcoming yuletide events. OK, maybe I'm showing my age, but I'm sure we can all agree that it seems to be getting earlier and earlier every year. So, although it may be just shy of 2 months to Christmas, let's jump in now for
some festive cheer and look at what's coming up this month to get us in the spirit!
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SPECTACULAR
Living in the Hunter, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to events, concerts, arts, food, wine and tourism destinations, and the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular is no exception – it is quite literally the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
This annual event returns bigger and brighter for 2022. With the switch being flicked on 4 November, visitors can enjoy a truly memorable night out with loved ones while wandering through the themed displays created using over 3 million lights. The spectacular will run right through to Australia Day 2023 – so there's plenty of time to go once, twice or more! The stunning new displays include a 14-metre-tall Christmas tree, an 8-metre-tall glittering stack of gifts, a 2.5-metre high giant illuminated Santa, a brand new 12 days of Christmas and display, and much more. To book tickets, visit www.hvg.com.au.

known for his outstanding contribution to big stage musicals and his wonderful work as an arranger – not to mention his sell-out performances at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre – and has been a part of the Cessnock Carols family for many years.
Of course, the night would not be complete without a visit from the man himself. And, as
in years past, the night will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display that is sure to delight and amaze. A selection of food trucks will be on hand to help feed the hungry masses, and for those keen to get a jump on their Christmas shopping, there'll be market stalls stocked with plenty of gift ideas. The critically acclaimed musical Come From Away is set to run for an extended stay at the Civic Theatre from 18 February 2023. It's the first time in 30 years that a Broadway smash hit has come to Newcastle – and we can't wait!
Based on the incredible real-life events in the wake of 9/11, Come From Away is an inspiring musical about unity and kindness in adversity. Set in Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 people from over 100 countries were redirected during this
traumatic event, almost doubling the population of the remote Canadian town overnight. It is an uplifting story of hope and humanity, capturing the generosity and hospitality of the small community of Gander who invited the "come from aways" into their homes.
"Come From Away has been bringing audiences to their feet in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast since its opening in Australia in July 2019. Come From Away is Broadway's 49th longest-running musical in
history, and we're delighted to bring this special production to Newcastle next year," said the show's producer, Rodney Rigby.
"Newcastle audiences will finally get to see a production that has captured the hearts of millions across Broadway, London's West End, North America, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney."
Securing this spectacular Broadway production is a significant coup for City of Newcastle. It joins a stellar line-up of international acts featured on Newcastle's 2023 major events calendar, kicking off on 10 January with one of the biggest names in music, Elton John.
Civic Theatre Manager Leonie Wallace says that hosting a Broadway production like Come From Away puts the theatre front and centre for consideration for future international theatre productions of this calibre.
"By securing this international Broadway production for Newcastle and Civic Theatre, we can demonstrate the demand for other musicals and live theatre productions on the national touring circuit," said Ms Wallace.
Come From Away is showing at Newcastle's Civic Theatre from 18 February until 5 March 2023. Tickets are on sale now at www. civictheatre.com.au.

IT’S ALL IN THE
CORRS
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER
Irish Celtic-infused pop icons, The Corrs, will return to Australia this November for an exclusive, one-night-only performance at Hope Estate in the heart of NSW’s Hunter Valley wine country. This is their first concert in five years and the only concert they are performing in the entire world – for now.
Joining them for an incredible evening of wine and song will be one of the most successful acts in British pop history Wet Wet Wet, Australia’s catchiest songwriter, Ben Lee and emerging artist, Gaudion.
The Corrs are a family affair, Andrea (lead vocals), Sharon (violin, piano, vocals), Caroline (drums, piano, vocals) and Jim (guitar, piano, vocals), who produce an enchanting mix of traditional Celtic music with a pop rock twist. They have written some of the biggest songs of the last three decades, having sold over 40 million albums worldwide and in excess of two million albums in Australia since their 1995 debut album Forgiven Not Forgotten crashed into the charts and stole our hearts. And Australia holds a very special place in their hearts too.
“Our memories of Australia are extremely fond,” said Sharon via Zoom from her home in Spain.
“It’s like having memories of your family –good memories. We first got recognised for our music in Australia. It really did hit the top, and it was quite incredible, quite remarkable. It feels like it’s destined to be – for our first concert back in quite some time, to be in Australia. It just feels like it’s the right thing to do. And the timing was right for all of us.”
The Corrs grew up in Dundalk near the border of Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s. Born to parents Gerry and Jean Corr, their father was a manager for the payroll department of the Irish Electricity Board. The children attended a local catholic school and were encouraged to learn to play musical instruments, as both parents were also musical. Jim and Sharon

formed a duo and would play regularly in their aunt’s pub, but the four siblings didn’t play as a band together until the film The Commitments was being produced in Ireland in 1991. Jim Corr had the idea that establishing a family band would help them win parts in the movie. In the end, only Andrea got a speaking part, with the rest of the band having small parts as musicians.
Their audition for The Commitments brought them to the notice of John Hughes, the music coordinator for the film, and he secured several high-profile appearances that began to open doors for the fledgling band, including a trip to America where they secured a recording contract. It didn’t take long for their first album
to start making waves, particularly after they supported Celine Dion on a world tour in 1996. Forgiven Not Forgotten gave us the incredible title track, the exquisite Heaven Knows and, of course, arguably one of the biggest adult contemporary songs of the modern era, Runaway.
Their second album, Talk On Corners, led with I Never Loved You Anyway, So Young and Only When I Sleep and is their biggestselling album to date. After a short break, The Corrs returned with In Blue, which features their highest streaming ever. The enchanting Breathless has received a staggering 132 million plays on Spotify and counting!
Returning to their folk roots with Borrowed Heaven and Home, The Corrs went on a decade-long hiatus to raise families and work on solo careers, only to return in 2015 with White Light and their latest release, 2017’s Jupiter Calling, featuring the sublime, Son Of Solomon and SOS (Song of Syria).
Their last concert together was after the release of Jupiter Calling and was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2017. At the time, they didn’t realise it would be their last for quite a long time.
“It’s all about timing,” said Sharon. “Life gets in the way, and we all have families. We spent a long time living in each other’s eyeballs, squeezed onto tiny couches for interviews. Everyone seems to think that as siblings, we are
happy to do that, but it’s the opposite, actually. I always say that one of our greatest successes has been that we still all talk to each other!”
“And then, of course, Covid happened. And we really were lucky to have each other during that time. I live in Spain, so we don’t all live near each other. Family facetime during Covid was super important. I had my 50th birthday in lockdown in our apartment, facetiming the family with a birthday cake. Now that we can get together, it’s amazing. We spent Christmas together not so long ago, and we couldn’t believe how many kids there were running about!”
Since the mid-2000s, both Andrea and Sharon have pursued solo careers as performers and recording artists. Jim has become better known as a conspiracy theorist, and Caroline (The Chick with the Stick) has raised three children and “consciously uncoupled” with her property developer husband. There’s a sense that post-Covid is the right time to step forward into new opportunities, reconnecting with their extraordinary talent and the magic combination that is all four of them together.
The concert in Australia came about because the promoter, One World Entertainment, approached the band with the concept already devised.
“The promoter came to us, and it was just the right time, especially with Covid now not ▶

such an issue. The concert itself looks like a really great gig, with lots of atmosphere. I like those types of concerts because they’re not a big, grey, clinical arenas. It will be a concert with a difference, and what’s not to love about it being at a winery – a few glasses of wine at the end of the concert will be lovely.”
To make this a concert with a difference and a night to remember, The Corrs will embark on a global first with 500 drones lighting up the sky, synced to several of their key songs to make the atmosphere genuinely remarkable.
“The drones will be creating images in the sky,” said Sharon. “It’s super exciting for us, not just the audience. We’ll be getting a big kick out of seeing it too. It’s a big deal. I’m looking forward to that aspect because I haven’t seen it before.”
Joining the Corrs at the Hope Estate concert is Scotland’s Wet Wet Wet, well known for their
massive hit, Love Is All Around, from one of the most successful UK movies ever, Four Weddings And A Funeral. Wet Wet Wet are celebrating the 35th anniversary of their first album release this year. With their hit albums and singles, including Sweet Little Mystery, Angel Eyes, Goodnight Girl, Julia Says and, of course, Sweet Surrender, the band have featured in the official UK singles and album charts for over 500 weeks, spending 15 weeks at the top with Love Is All Around - a record for any UK artist that still stands today.
Having played to more than four million people around the world, including a recordbreaking ten sold-out shows in one year at the SEC in Glasgow, the band have built a reputation as one of the best live acts ever produced by the UK. The band’s latest album, 2021’s The Journey, is their first in over a decade and having last toured Australia all the way
back in 1995, Wet Wet Wet are thrilled to be finally coming back to reconnect with their old fans and looking forward to making new ones who will experience them for the first time.
Ben Lee has been one of Australia’s most successful singer-songwriters of the new millennium. Cigarette’s Will Kill You and Catch My Disease have been radio staples for years, and his 2006 smash, We’re All In This Together, became an unofficial Aussie anthem during the pandemic. Never one to take himself seriously, Ben is in it for the good times.
A prolific collaborator, Ben has worked with too many artists to mention, runs a podcast network and even directs movies! Ben will have you in a great mood for the evening ahead with his signature happy vibe and message of love and unity.
Emerging artist, Gaudion will impress you with his charisma, energy and zest for

life, which are embodied in his music as he continues his mission to spread happiness everywhere. Gaudion is nominated for Breakout Artist of the Year at this year’s Gold Coast Music Awards, and his unique style is influenced by the likes of Van Morrison, Ed Sheeran, James Reyne and Tracy Chapman.
The Corrs are now gearing up for rehearsals in preparation for the concert, with What’s App messages flying back and forth between the siblings to work out the setlist and the arc of the performance.
“The songs that we need are basically the hits – that makes absolute sense, then a couple of interesting things thrown in. I’m off to Dublin for two weeks in November for the rehearsals, return home briefly and then fly out to Australia. I’ll only be in the country for four days because I need to get back for my kids, who are still in school. If I stayed any longer, I’d want to stay for a month and travel around. I love to travel; it’s my happy place, and Australia is an exciting country to be in.”
“I think that the Irish and Australians are very similar; we’re very alike as people. We like having fun and not being too serious. There’s
great diversity in Australia, too, which I think is awesome. I remember what a pretty town Newcastle is with its distinct buildings and the proximity to the beach. It has a real old-world feel, and the last time I was in Newcastle, I did bring my children, but they were much younger!”
Sharon’s children are now 15 and 16 years of age, and school is a big priority for the family, which is why Sharon won’t be staying on after the concert.
“When you mix looking after kids with getting on stage, it’s just not possible – it’s like a bad cocktail. I need quiet time before I go on, and the demands of being a parent don’t fit in with that. It’s just not workable. You end up not doing anything as well as it should be done.”
There are no agreements between the siblings yet regarding what comes after their concert in Australia – either touring more or producing another album.
“The agreement process is quite tentative between us. I’m totally up for more concerts. I really think it will happen if everything goes smoothly. There are no thoughts yet about another album. I think it’s first things first.
Although I’ve been touring my solo shows for the last couple of years and I’m a well-oiled machine, as a four-piece, we haven’t played together since 2017. I think it’s super important to focus on the task at hand, and then if, for some reason, we start writing out of that, well, then great. But if you make too many plans ahead, you lose what you’re doing right now. So, in terms of another album – it’s a maybe. A solid maybe!’
If you’re a fan of The Corrs, this concert at Hope Estate is not to be missed. Be among the first ever to see the amazing light show that 500 drones can produce, synced to music that will bring back memories of days gone by, with that incredible sound of chart-topping pop music infused with traditional Celtic folk. The band will be excited to be there, and it is likely to be a night never to be forgotten. There are still tickets available from $95 for general admission.

URTH FITNESS Fitness Favourite Evolves
INTERVIEW DI VON ESSEN
After 28 years, Planet Fitness is changing its name, and while Dallas Rosekelly, the Founder of Planet Fitness Australia, continues to expand that brand nationally, the three Newcastle gyms are evolving on their own, with Planet Fitness Newcastle proud to unveil their new identity –Urth Fitness.
"The re-brand to Urth Fitness is an opportunity for us to modernise, refresh and rejuvenate a brand locally loved by over 10,000 members," said Dallas.
"The three Urth Fitness gyms maintain the same commitment, team, values and
community as Planet Fitness. The same friendly faces will continue to greet you early in the morning, and we still live by our welcoming and judgement free philosophy. We will always be the most affordable gym in Newcastle.
"Our dedication to always being better and continuously improving our offering for our members is encapsulated in this transformation to Urth Fitness."
One man's vision 28 years ago has now become a family legacy of dedication to health and fitness. Dallas's daughters Montana and Gjenae were literally born into fitness (there
are images of them as kids in all the gyms), and they are now leading this proud family business.
Of course, it's not just the name that's changed. When Dallas started the business in 1994, it grew because Dallas was continually listening to his members, designing a fitness brand that catered to people's needs and continuing to evolve with member feedback.
"As fitness itself is a journey, we've continued to evolve our business and always will. Who we are is the same; what we are is better," says Dallas.
"We installed the latest range of cardio and strength equipment at our Belmont and Charlestown locations. Whilst, Lambton has seen a fully rebuilt outdoor training area with all new functional workout equipment. Plus, we just launched our own outdoor functional training classes to go along."
Dallas firmly believes that physical and mental health go together, as one is needed to support the other. So Urth Fitness is not only a spacious gym with group fitness classes but also a wellness gym of the future, with an Urth Fitness Spa located at each of the three locations.
Each Spa includes an infrared sauna, massage chairs, a hydro-massage lounge, and luxurious spray-tan booths. Members who choose a Platinum membership (or above) can access all of these inclusions. Best of all – a Platinum membership is still only $10 per week, with an entry-level membership just $5 weekly.
If you have ever felt intimidated walking into a gym before, if you want a place that gives you relaxation and recovery options after your workout, a place that greets you with welcoming and smiling faces that also cheer you on and are proud of your progress, a social environment filled with people who feel the same as you, or just a gym where you feel you will belong- then Urth Fitness is the health and wellness gym, for U

Become a Port Stephens KOALA CRUSADER
A partnership between Port Stephens Council, the NSW Government and volunteer care group Port Stephens Koala Hospital, the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary is focused on conservation and protecting the threatened species for years to come.
A decade ago, the koala population in this region numbered in the 1000s. Today we can only count them in the 100s, so receiving
financial support is vital to their future.
An innovative new campaign allowing members of the public to get involved in protecting our local furry friends is being launched this month, just in time for Christmas gifting and offering the opportunity to become a Koala Crusader!
Most importantly, when you become a Koala Crusader, you make a direct financial
contribution to the Port Stephens Koala Hospital, helping to ensure the long-term rehabilitation, preservation and conservation of koalas in the wild.
“For only $129, a Port Stephens Koala Crusader not only directly contributes to the long-term preservation of koalas in the Port Stephens region but receives lots of ‘goodies,’ said Holiday Parks Section Manager Kim Latham.
“This includes a 12-month Annual Entry Pass, pledge certificate, plush Koala, baseball cap, lapel pin, sticker and writing pen. And when a Koala Crusader visits the Sanctuary, they also get plenty of additional perks like 10% off souvenirs or food and beverages purchased at Fat Possum Café, a 10% discount off an accommodation stay in a glamping tent or hotel room as well as being able to bring a friend for FREE on Wild Koala Day (3 May 2023).”
Purchase a Port Stephens Koala Crusader for family or friends this Christmas and directly contribute to the long-term preservation of Port Stephens koalas in the wild.
Port Stephens Koala Crusader memberships are available from 9 November. For more information, visit www. portstephenskoalasanctuary.com.au. The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary is open daily from 9am – 5pm (except Christmas Day).

On The Music Scene
IT'S A MUSICAL Summer!
The announcement that Jason Donovan and Myf Warhurst were part of the 50th Anniversary production of Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Picture Show gave me flashbacks. That was one of the first big stage shows that really stands out in my memory. But if you can't wait until February for a bit of tongue-in-cheek musical fun, you are in luck.
The Civic Theatre Playhouse will play host to Heathers the Musical, based on the classic 1989 film. If it's been a while since you have seen it or this is your first introduction, the original starred Christian Slater, Winona Ryder and Shannon Doherty. Westerberg High is ruled by a shoulderpadded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruellest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under. For a show that is about
getting rid of your friends, it really is very entertaining!
For those who want a familiar face with their musical entertainment, Velvet Rewired, featuring the iconic Marcia Hines, will be here in April.
It's a coming-of-age story set in the subtle surroundings of a nightclub that is a blend of Studio 54 and a circus performance. As it turns out, Marcia will be back on the small screen soon as well, with her return as a guest judge on the new Australian Idol locked in recently. The Queen of disco has helped find some of this country's best talent, including Rob Mills, who is currently starring in Hairspray, which opens in Sydney in February. Jessica Mauboy has also proved she can carry a musical-based storyline with the best of them starring in Sapphires and Bran Nue Dae.
This summer is the perfect time to make some musical memories as a family visit www.civictheatre. com.au for more info and tickets.

November Horoscopes
ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH
STAR OF THE MONTH
SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER
You made a valiant effort to fall in line last year, with precious less success. But Scorpios are true battlers - you know that if you work hard and stay resolute, rewards eventually follow. Your first strategy: recognise your target; next: hammer away until you get results. Just don’t overdo it. Even super-ambitious-you needs the occasional break. Look forward to January, when Scorpios can make time for play. In the meantime, your libido is also granted more fun, so you’d be daft not to take advantage. Don’t worry if these unions don’t last forever. The memories will.
place to live, capitalise on recent benefits. Another plus: you’re feeling much less coy sexually. Your allure is all but irresistible this month, and what starts as a casual flirtation could turn into something more permanent.
PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH
Who’d blame you for giving up on love? But let’s face it, sometimes you expect too much from relationships. Occasionally, our protective mechanisms hide vulnerabilities but can also shut out others in the process. Free up those emotional chains, and you have a chance of finding or keeping your soulmate. In matters of love, there’s no hurry to decide, and the last week of November could surprise you.
ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
But this month’s problems may not be that serious, so don’t make matters worse. If you feel you’ve lost direction, try to free yourself from any self-imposed rut. Be bold and believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid to tell it like it is, and don’t buckle to ideas that are second best.
LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST
We all need a helping hand every so often. November introduces a wise mentor who can bring new wisdom into your life. As a bonus, the cosmos also focuses on finances. Nothing less than worthy recompense will cut it now. And don’t worry if less scrupulous colleagues try to steal your glory. With you one step ahead, they’ll be left straggling two steps behind. Love also features. Business trips, too.
VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER
SAGITTARIUS
22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER
Rarely short of admirers, Sagittarians can be outrageous flirts who live life to the full. This month, you’re feeling particularly high-spirited, and restless energy keeps you constantly on the move. Not in the mood for dreary obligations, restrictions on your freedom will seem unbearable. If outworn love is holding you back, then it’s time to give yourself some much-needed breathing space.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY
This month you’re socially magnetic and come across as a professional wizard at work. The people you meet and the directions you take steer you towards happiness and success. This extends to the romantic arena, too - with your irresistible allure drawing love to you. At work, expect to rub shoulders with seasoned professionals who seem all too happy to help you.
AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY
Don’t hide away from the world, Aquarius. It’s time to face up to all the challenging possibilities on offer. If you’re aiming for a better job, a pay rise or a more desirable
So many areas of your life have been left simmering, with your career also in the melting pot. Take heart. November encourages physical, mental and spiritual renewal - this time, with you as an active contributor. Many outworn habits and attitudes have to go. And when feeling this vibrant, it stands to reason that your sexual magnetism is at its full strength. Embrace life, and it will love you back.
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY
Last month’s uncertainty continues thanks to Taurus’s nemesis, a meddling Mars - so steer clear of launching new projects. On the plus side, the first few weeks of November are an ideal time to reassess plans that didn’t work out the first time. Fine-tune your CV, or add bells and whistles to the proposal you thought you had finished. You can always improve upon that initial flash of genius.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE
Geminis step into a month packed with ambition. Thanks go to Jupiter, who ups both your work responsibilities and your popularity rating. Don’t worry about any extra dutiesyou have all the right qualities to meet most challenges. After all, you’re used to switching from low to high gear and then back again. Your driving force? The promise of financial independence. Just don’t forget to stop for the occasional breather.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
We all have hidden tensions that can cause us to behave in ways we don’t always understand.
Sometimes it seems fate gives with one hand and takes with the other. Thankfully, November signals the end of this struggle. Once again, you’re motivated and heading towards success. If you have a brilliant proposal in the back of your mind, bring it to the fore. If you’re more inclined to hit the road for a while, now’s your chance to roam. It looks like an important financial leap could also be on the horizon.
LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER
Early November may not be your best time. If putting on an act gets you by, fine - but if your dilemma is desperate, tell it like it is. Besides, not everyone is playing fair. Call it manipulation or coercion - a certain someone knows which strings to pull. The upside? When Venus offers extra time for play later in the month, slip into party mode. At the same time, the Sun generously boosts finances.

Briar Ridge Vineyard
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Located in one of the most picturesque areas of the Hunter Valley, Mount View, boutique winery Briar Ridge is quickly gaining a reputation for innovative winemaking. Winner of the 2022 Young Achiever of the Year at the Hunter Legend Awards, Briar Ridge winemaker Alex Beckett is steering a bright future for the winery. This innovation is firmly supported by a foundation in tradition and well-established vines that enjoy a long history. It is these vines, planted 50 years ago in 1972, that the winery is celebrating this year.
The winery's history began in 1972 when Murray Robson planted the first vines - Pinot
Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, in what was then called Squire Vineyard. In 1987 John Davis purchased the property because, as a geologist, he recognised the unique climate, topography, and soil that the area offered winemaking.
In 1991 Hunter Valley legendary winemaker Karl Stockhausen joined Briar Ridge, releasing his first vintage in the same year, which won the best wine in show at the Hunter Valley Wine Show for his Shiraz.
Fast forward to 2022, and at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards, Briar Ridge was presented with not only the trophy for 'White (& Blends) Wine of the Year with the
2021 Limited Release Albariño but also a red star winery rating.
In addition, the 2021 'Briar Hill' Chardonnay also won the 'Hunter Valley Best of Region' trophy in the James Halliday Chardonnay and Cabernet Challenge. The winery also won gold at the recent Hunter Valley Wine Show for their 2013 Stockhausen Signature Semillon.
Currently studying in the Institute of Masters of Wine Study Program, winemaker Alex Beckett is passionate about his innovative work at Briar Ridge and excited about the recognition he has been receiving.
"It was an honour to have our Hunter Valley Albariño recognised as the best other white in

Australia," said Alex. "The last few years have seen our team work tirelessly into evolving the viticulture and winemaking behind our wines, so to have that quality recognised is a wonderful feeling.
"It's the melding together of the old and the new that makes Briar Ridge so interesting – it's certainly why I enjoy doing what I do. I have the creative freedom to play and experiment and build upon that tradition, respecting what has been done but also improving it as we move on."
The 50th Jubilee will be celebrated with several members-only events, including a gala lunch held in the cellar door with the 2-hatted Muse Restaurant catering, a charity auction, a smorgasbord of entertainment, and wine-tasting masterclasses with Alex.
Briar Ridge is also home to the longest continually running wine club in the Hunter Valley, and as part of the 50th celebrations, the winery is launching a brand-new wine club called Club Radica - a Single Vineyard wine club by invitation only.
"This is more than a wine club; this is all about access," said Briar Ridge General Manager Michael Bentley.
"Access to our most unique and exclusive products, access to other people who share their passion for our wines and access to our winemaker, Alex. Being invitation only, there is an air of exclusivity, but this group is as carefully curated as a personal cellar,
and it's all about getting back into corks and conversations."
The cellar door experience now also includes Osteria, a restaurant specialising in home-style Italian cooking and perfect for a relaxed lunch on the deck.
On Sunday afternoons, solo musicians provide chilled-out tunes, and there's plenty of room for the kids to run around in the idyllic landscape. You can even book a private picnic in your own corner of the grounds or bring your furry friend, with Pooch Platters available to keep your pet dog happy.
Owner of Briar Ridge, Jaclyn Davis, is excited at the trajectory of the winery. "We are so lucky to have Alex as our winemaker," said Jaclyn. "We are proud to be at the forefront of innovative wine techniques firmly supported by traditions that go back 50 years this year. We are a destination cellar door, a place to reward those who are curious about Mount View, a place where you can come and spend a few hours at a time exploring wines, eating delicious food with family, friends or your partner and enjoying the surrounding landscape. We've made it our mission to redefine the Hunter Valley wine experience, and I'm confident we're on our way!"
Briar Ridge Cellar Door is located at 593 Mount View Road, Mount View and is open seven days with tastings daily from 10am to 4pm. Osteria Kitchen is open Thursday to Monday from 11am to 4pm.

Want to Move Into a Career in Teaching?
Now is The Time.
The pandemic has forced many of us to reconsider our career paths and the kind of impact we want to make. With the need for trained teachers only increasing, a role shaping children’s futures and making an immediate impression in the classroom is within your grasp via the University of Newcastle’s Master of Teaching.
Using your existing degree as a foundation (regardless of what field it is in), the Master of Teaching is the perfect solution to transition into a rewarding career as a primary or secondary teacher. You’ll engage in practical experience, in-depth learning and gain professional teaching accreditation within 18 months.
With a background in psychology, Master of Teaching (Primary) graduate, Taylor was inspired to take the leap and switch careers.
“The Master of Teaching appealed to me because I could walk away with a teaching degree in half the time. Knowing that I would be studying with people who had already been to uni and had a degree under their belt was also enticing,” says Taylor.
With face-to-face delivery and supportive teachers, Taylor was also able to manage study around her work and life.
“The program is designed to help those already working or with a family. I studied fulltime and worked part-time and found it very manageable.”
Taking a chance on a new career path paid off for Taylor, who has a full-time permanent position at a local primary school and a job she loves. The move into the profession was so fitting for Taylor that she is now undertaking further postgraduate study to progress in the teaching field.
So, if you’ve ever found yourself thinking about becoming a teacher, now is the time to go for it. Applications are open for the 2023 intake. Make a change, and you could make a difference. For more information, visit www. newcastle.edu.au/postgrad-teaching

Newcastle has a long history of artistic excellence in the performing arts, and this is especially true for dance. The National College of Dance (NCD), located in Lambton, has been nurturing the talent of dancers and producing some of the best in the world for almost half a century. The college has been under the leadership of former Australian Ballet Company member and Sydney Dance Company
Associate Artistic Director Brett Morgan OAM since 2011 and is consistently rated in the top 3 schools in all national dance competitions in Classical, Contemporary and Jazz genres. More importantly, even when covid hit the industry hard, all graduates were successful in being offered placements in the industry across the world.
Brett and the team at the NCD have a strong commitment and a passion for providing opportunity, education and training for young dancers, particularly those in regional settings outside of metropolitan cities. Brett’s glittering career began with long commutes and a significant time and resource sacrifice from his parents. He has made it his mission to ensure
that regional dancers or students receive the coaching, performance opportunities, and career mentoring that would typically be unattainable due to finances or distance. This commitment has led to the establishment of the National Youth Ballet Company (NYBC), a new and exciting initiative for the Hunter region that aims to provide young dancers with the opportunity to gain experience within a professional company environment.
Vicki Morgan, CEO of NCD and CEO and Business Development Manager of NYBC, believes that the new company is sorely needed as the industry copes with the fallout of the covid pandemic.
“The natural career pathways of our students were changed by covid,” said Vicki. “Our youth lost opportunities, and it’s important that we get back on track. We want to create a bridge for these students, a pathway to professional performance and experience that will help them launch their professional careers.
“NYBC was born from a vision to enrich the lives of young dancers and their communities by creating a platform to inspire artistic ambition, focusing on regional areas. The
aim is to create a collaborative environment between professional composers, musicians, stage production and pre-professional dancers and provide them with the opportunity to be exposed to regional Australia.”
The youth company is a not-for-profit, steered by an incorporated body with a board of like-minded professionals, all sharing a passion for the arts, especially in the regions. Each member has strong ties to the Hunter, with most calling Newcastle their home. The committee includes Professor Mark Jones, UON Pro Vice-Chancellor Educational Innovation; Jane Beverley, Managing Director of Evolution Financial Business Advisors; Louise Kipa, Director Persona Communications and Head of Creative; Alicia Brown, Professional Producer and Company Manager; Lara Bussey, HR Manager and Dance Creative Producer and Vicki Morgan.
“Company members will rehearse with choreographers on original pieces along with the chance to perform works by iconic choreographers that have been performed all over the world,” said Vicki. “Our collaborating creatives are icons in the industry, and we’re

very proud that they believe in our mission and are only too happy to work with us. People like Graeme Murphy AO and Janet Vernon AM, who Brett worked with for 17 years at Sydney Dance Company, composer Michael Askill, singer and performer iOTA, choreographers Timothy Gordon, Jake Burden and Debbie Ellis Linnert, musician Bridget Bourne and composer and musician Cyrus Meurant, not to mention Brett himself.
“In fact, Cyrus Meurant is quickly becoming a key ballet composer in Australia. He actually composes while we choreograph new works. This level of collaboration in this professional environment is a priceless experience for young dancers. Janet and Graeme coach dancers through their works via zoom, providing indepth detail around the conception of each piece – this is an exceptional opportunity for our young dancers that will provide them with a competitive advantage when seeking roles in companies around the world.”
The company’s debut show was a triple bill program, comprising three pieces. Piece One: Au Revoir Mon Ami was a newly composed and choreographed piece of work composed
by Cyrus Meurant and choreographed in sections by Brett Morgan OAM, Timothy Gordon, Debbie Ellis Linnert, and Jake Burden. Piece Two: Banged and Tap from Synergy with Synergy. Created by Graeme Murphy AM and percussionist Michael Askill. Piece Three: Berlin Songs was a re-creation of three pieces performed by iOTA from the original work of Graeme Murphy’s Berlin. The triple bill program was staged at St Phillips College for one night only and at Gosford’s Laycock Theatre also for one night only in mid-August in order to create a showreel to attract potential sponsors, to highlight the extraordinary calibre of the dancers and to prepare for their official launch at the iconic Sydney Eisteddfod at Sydney Opera House, where they performed in front of a crowd of Australia’s most elite dancers, dance schools and industry professionals. Invited as the special guest artist, NYBC performed sections of the triple bill program, including selected works from Au Revoir Mon Ami and two pieces from Berlin Songs.
“The performance was incredibly successful and featured dancers who were all under the age of 17,” said Vicki.
“I was actually incredibly shocked, totally blown away by the calibre of the performances – they were super professional. We need to keep encouraging our talented young people. It’s easy for people to overlook the rich culture of performing arts that Newcastle enjoys.”
The company aims to produce a variety of works with two or three shows every year, touring regional NSW. Auditions are held for each show, and it is expected that there will be interest from dancers across all the geographic regions of the state. Expect to see a new audition notification posted to the website www.nationalyouthballetcompany.com.au soon with the intent for auditions to take place early in 2023 for next year’s productions. The company is also actively seeking sponsorship and investment with several packages available. If you wish to support the work of this fledgling but critical youth company, you can do so easily by purchasing tickets to their shows when they become available – even if dance is an art form that challenges you – you may be very surprised at how much you enjoy these talented young people.

with as children, the idea of building blocks in any program is simple and robust if used correctly.
Frequently, I have patients present with a multitude of problems. The solution is to break the problem down into its fundamental building blocks and start at the simplest level. Because I work with composite resin materials – I may have to start with a tooth that is not the key tooth for my final definitive restorative program.
Not a problem. The tooth still needs restorative care, and the patient will benefit from a stronger filling. Composite resin (if finished correctly) is cosmetically pleasing, and although the starting point is not definitive, it provides for the advancement of the restorative program.
Another way to look at this is to consider this preliminary work to be the laying of foundations in preparation for possible, more definitive dental treatment. This is undoubtedly a slower path, but one that is more rigorous, with both the patient and I able to test outcomes at each level before proceeding to the next level. This builds our confidence in the program we are pursuing, weeds out problems that may otherwise go unnoticed and spreads costs over time, making the dental treatment more affordable. As much as I speak of definitive dentistry – many of my patients are more than happy with the outcomes of “laying of foundations” and choose to remain at this level.
I find this pleasing. The patient is content with their outcome. The fundamentals are in place if ever the patient decides to move to the next level – or is required to do so because of mishap. Ultimately, building blocks allow for the controlled progression from least invasive to progressively more intrusive, hoping to deliver teeth for life.

On Tour With the Kid
CHLOE O'SULLIVAN
I heard an interesting term to describe myself the other day. I'm part of the "sandwich generation."
Apparently, this means that because I selfishly left it until later to have kids, I now look after older relatives while the Kid is still at school. I say selfishly because the implication, when it was used, was that if I hadn't put myself and my career first, I wouldn't be in this situation.
We shall skip over the fact that leaving raising a human until I had my life together and I was financially stable seemed like a good plan. In my case, it's my grandmother, and she would gladly point out the fact that she would have been older either way. Our family has a dark sense of humour that got us through some pretty hard times.
My grandma, who is well into her 80s, came from the Central West, which is where she spent most of her life. She loves the country and the landscape. Likes the sound of horses' hooves on the road and seeing livestock in the fields. She has been living with us in Newcastle for the past several years, so doing these things regularly has been more difficult.
We still have relatives at home, but when you want to bring a whole tribe of you on a trip, you don't want to put people out, and I like my relatives enough not to ask them to put up with my two gorgeous but constantly farting dogs. It's not their fault, they are old, but even so, they can clear a room in under 20 seconds. So the challenge was to find somewhere that had enough space for all of us and would take the dogs. Thanks to a quick Stayz search, we found the perfect country house.
Wonga, described as a secluded oasis in the heart of Parkes, looked perfect.
It wasn't until we arrived that we realised how perfect it was. Once you drive through the gates, you wouldn't even know you had neighbours on either side. The property and the gardens are stunning and expansive. The dogs, thrilled to be out of the car after a 7-hour drive, went exploring before we did. I was worried they might take off being in a new place, but the yard was totally secure, so thankfully, we were free to leave them to roam around.
The house itself was built in the 1860s and was one of the first homes in the area. With six bedrooms, there was plenty of room to move. We chose the big master bedroom, which opened out onto the wrap-around verandah. With the door open, I could lay in bed with my coffee and look out over the beautiful established gardens and the huge inground pool. I love older houses, so I was taken with the high ceiling and the stunning modern kitchen, which still included the old wood fire stove. The kid, however, was most taken with Alexa being connected in the house. Each time she asked, Alexa, are you my friend? Alexa would sing her a little song.
The weather was still slightly on the rainy side to really enjoy the pool, but once the owners told us that Alexa was connected to play music poolside, that locked in my decision to book again over the Christmas break to spend some quality with the family.
We can't wait to head back with the dogs and enjoy our break from the city.

AVENUE OF TREES IN HONOUR OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II
A 700 m-long avenue of native trees stretching along the creek side of Maryland Drive will create a living legacy with 70 mature trees, which were initially planned as part of Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark the Queen's 70 years of service to the Commonwealth, will now provide a lasting tribute to the late monarch, who visited Newcastle four times during her reign.
The project was jointly funded by City of Newcastle and the Australian Government's Planting Trees for The Queen's Jubilee Program, which was designed to support community-based treeplanting events across Australia.
A large garden bed planted with native shrubs and grasses is located at the beginning of the Queen's Jubilee Avenue and
features a large sandstone block, providing a striking centrepiece to display the commemorative plaque.
The project supports City of Newcastle's commitment to increasing urban forest canopy cover and improving open spaces for wildlife and future generations.

Perry Homes' Dream Home Deal!
Perry Homes has been building awardwinning homes for nearly 30 years. A trusted builder, they have a well-earned reputation for delivering quality homes that provide exceptional value for money.
Building from the Central Coast right up to southeast Queensland and out to Armidale, the company is 100% owned and managed by David Perry.
With an extensive range of house designs available, Perry Homes understands that there isn't always a perfect match for everyone.
"At Perry Homes, we appreciate that building a home is a deeply personal experience, and we want our clients to love their home for many years to come. That's why we are happy to modify our plans or even create a customdesigned home that meets our client's needs," said New Home Consultant Noel Simmonds.
And, for a limited time, when you build with Perry Homes, they will include all of their Inspired Inclusions for only $14,990. That's over 38 luxury upgrades to your new home valued at $50,000!
Some of the luxury inclusions include:
• Colorbond steel roof with statement front entry door
• Ample LED downlights and additional LED switches, and internal sensor lights throughout the home
• Mirrored robes in the bedrooms and feature panel internal doors throughout Smartstone benchtops and a choice of high-end kitchen appliances
• Selection of high-end bathroom fixtures and fittings and semi-frameless shower screens
Noel added, "our clients are often looking at ways to bring their personal flair to their home design without breaking the budget. Our Inspired Inclusions allow them the flexibility to explore different materials, fixtures and fittings for an affordable price."
