FRO M THE EDITORS...

As we go to print on this issue, we've just witnessed the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the changing of the guard that is the monarchy. Receiving an email this week berating us for false reporting on some 'Royal diaries' that had apparently been found in someone's drawers (yes –they clearly had the wrong magazine and received a lecture from this editor about fact-checking!) made me realise how passionately polarised people are about the royal family.

Did we really need a public holiday three days after the Queen's funeral to 'celebrate' her life, costing our economy 2.2 billion in the process (at a time when the post-Covid economy is crippling small businesses)? Was it even appropriate, given the indigenous history of our nation – or was it completely tone-deaf? Love them or hate them; the monarchy certainly is a divisive bunch – even from afar.

This month we see royalty of a different (and highly talented) kind visiting our fair shores and gracing the stage in the Hunter Valley. Andrea Bocelli is set to uplift Australian audiences with a stunning selection of soul-stirring arias, enduring love songs and beloved crossover hits in his only concert outside of the major city venues. Bocelli is cognisant of his music's power to heal and the need the world has right now for such healing to take place. His story is one of passion and family; read more on page 16.

If you're itching to get out and enjoy Spring in the Hunter, there's loads to see and do this month. School holidays (and a public holiday) kick the month off, so plenty of family-friendly events are taking place around the city and further afield. Grab the kids (and the car) and check out Amaze & Play in the Garden at Hunter Valley Gardens (until 9 October), Erth's Prehistoric World at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre (1 October) or Friday Fun days at the Rotunda at Wallsend (7 October). In fact, if it's on in the Hunter, you'll find it in our monthly What's On Guide (page 6).

If your tastes are a little more refined, check out La Traviata at MAP mima, Speers Point on 14 and 16 October – or for a truly unique collaboration of art and opera, Underground Opera Company's production of Operarte in the Cathedral is an event not to be missed (page 14).

The Underground Opera Company (UOC) will celebrate 15 years of presenting 'extraordinary performances in breathtaking spaces' to audiences across Australia when they present Operarte at Newcastle Cathedral on 28 October. The performance will be the extraordinary result of the marriage of art and opera.

"Operarte will combine our exceptional live concert performances of Arias from popular opera with a dash of musical theatre, as well as the visual spectacle of ARC Living Master Artist, Mr Gordon Hanley's photo-realistic, gold point artworks. These masterpieces are drawn with 24ct gold, silver and platinum," said Underground Opera Director Mr Bruce Edwards.

"I was introduced to the Christ Church Cathedral at the bequest of Trevor Richards OAM from Morpeth Gallery, who provided Gordon Hanley's sublime masterpieces for the Operarte performance and exhibition. This exhibition will include 20 artworks that Mr Hanley has created to best represent each individual Aria in the evening's programme.

Time-lapse photographs are taken and combined to create a visually moving masterpiece. These moving masterpieces will be projected onto the Cathedral's Screen behind the opera singers, creating a magical backdrop for the live performance.

Operarte in the Cathedral will feature UOC stars Soprano Rebecca Cassidy, MezzoSoprano Louise Dorsman, Tenor Mr Glenn Lorimer and Baritone Jon Maskell, accompanied by the incredible Mark Connors on piano. The program for this show will elate anyone wanting to experience opera for the first time whilst the amazing performances of the world-class cast will satisfy the most ardent opera aficionado. From Phantom of the Opera to Nessun Dorma and everything in between, be prepared to laugh, cry and cheer at Opera in the Cathedral.

Tickets for Operarte are $60 - $95 and are available from UOC's website at www. undergroundopera.com.au

A WORLD OF DISCOVERY

atEarly childhood is a time for children to discover who they are and how they fit into this world.

At Little Beginnings Maryville, you will see your child’s educators fostering each child’s learning as they join in, guide and encourage the children throughout the day.

Early childhood is a unique and important stage of life, and we are committed to being every child’s champion - we celebrate the big, little and in-between achievements.

Our educators advocate for the children and provide a safe space that protects, comforts and allows them to recognise and express their feelings.

We are passionate about building strong relationships with the children, families, educators and the wider community. We believe our relationships influence everything we plan for and strive to achieve as a centre. These relationships continue long after their journey ends at Little Beginnings Maryville.

We offer an inclusive environment where we recognise that each child is an individual

and has their own way of learning. We aim to provide children with opportunities to thrive and wholly participate in learning through guidance and resources and by maximising every child’s potential.

We recognise and celebrate each child’s abilities and acknowledge them as competent and capable learners. We educate our children about similarities and differences and to have respect for everyone within the community.

Our Director Emily leads the team of educators to ensure motivated, nurturing, and supportive educators are there to enable the children to develop strong bonds and thrive wholly throughout their learning journey.

Our team helps children understand the importance of what connected and meaningful relationships look like, feel like and sound like.

If these values and beliefs align with your own and you would like to come and see what makes our centre so amazing, please get in touch with Emily for a centre tour.

The world’s most famous and beloved classical music artist, Maestro Andrea Bocelli, is heading our way this month with a 70-piece orchestra and a 60-person choir to perform at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley on 29 October.

The national tour includes just five cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and our own Hunter Valley. Global entertainment producer Teg Van Egmond is presenting the tour.

Christo Van Egmond, Teg Van Egmond’s Managing Director, says, “I’m overjoyed to announce that Andrea Bocelli, a true icon of the greatest Italian vocal tradition, will return

to Australian stages this year! Only a handful of artists have done as much to popularise –and introduce newcomers to – the classical repertoire, and Bocelli’s extraordinary, Godgiven talent must be experienced live to be fully appreciated. We’ve never needed the uplifting, spiritual therapy of Bocelli’s world-famous tenor more than we do right now.”

Indeed, Bocelli himself is cognisant of the power his music has to heal and the need the world has right now for such healing to take place. Drawing from his extensive back catalogue – which spans almost three decades – Maestro Bocelli is set to uplift Australian

audiences with a stunning selection of soulstirring arias, enduring love songs and beloved crossover hits.

“The Australian tour dates are not just concerts to me; they are opportunities for us to immerse ourselves in musical beauty on a grand scale,” Andrea Bocelli says.

“For these upcoming shows, my aim is to restore some serenity and enter gently into people’s hearts. If my previous tours are anything to go by, I’ve always found Australian audiences to be passionate, enthusiastic and friendly. I genuinely appreciate my generous and engaged Australian fanbase and am proud

to be even a tiny part of the soundtrack to so many people’s lives.

“With its ability to inspire and heal, music is its own language, and I never tire of performing these songs – even the ones I’ve been singing in concert for more than 25 years! – because they move me so deeply."

World-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli made pop music audiences fall in love with classical opera. Originally perfecting his singing style under the guidance of mentor Franco Corelli, Bocelli’s star began to rise when he won the 44th Sanremo Music Festival in 1994. Bocelli has since sold over 90 million records, boasts one of the most recognisable voices in modern music and has won a Golden Globe, 7 Classical BRITs and 7 World Music awards throughout his illustrious career to date. By collaborating with artists such as Dua Lipa, Josh Groban and Ed Sheeran on his chart-topping album Si in 2019, Bocelli introduced his brilliance to a whole new generation of fans.

The famous tenor was born with congenital glaucoma on 22 September 1958 in the small

village of La Stera, Tuscany, Italy, to Alessandro and Edi Bocelli. His father was a well-to-do farm machinery dealer and vigneron. He was raised on his family estate in Lajatico, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and is passionate about where he comes from.

“I travelled the world. I had experiences of all kinds, yet the farther I go, the more I feel like I need to return to where life seems simpler and more beautiful. Right here, under the Tuscan sky, where I was born and raised amid nature, surrounded by the sounds and smells of the countryside.

“I cherish and hold every memory of Tuscany deep in my heart. I will take them with me wherever I go because I am the product of this land, the sum of my past, experiences, and childhood dreams. If you want to have large, strong wings, you need to be deeply rooted in your land. Lajatico is my retreat. It is the place where my ancestors chose to live, work and raise their children.”

football accident at the age of 12. Bocelli also plays the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. Although aspiring to become a famous opera singer one day, Bocelli attended the University of Pisa to study law and sang in piano bars at night, where he met his first wife, Enrica Cenzatti.

Bocelli practised law for just one year in 1986, after which he pursued his dream of becoming an opera singer by studying under Franco Corelli. Then, in 1992, he auditioned for a demo tape produced by an Italian rock star, Zucchero Fornaciari, of his song Miserere. Zucchero sent the tape to Luciano Pavarotti, who was so impressed by the young singer that he persuaded Zucchero to use Bocelli instead of himself.

He began learning piano at the age of six and then completely lost his sight following a ▶

Bocelli went on tour with Zucchero and eventually recorded the song with Pavarotti, which became a European smash hit, leading to signing with the music label Sugar Music. He recorded his first studio album Il Mare Calmo della Sera, in 1994, and the rest, as they say, is history.

"MUSIC IS ESSENTIAL NOURISHMENT FOR THE HUMAN SPIRIT. WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE THE JOYS OF LIFE THAN THROUGH SONG!”
17

In 1995, Bocelli and his wife welcomed their first son Amos into the world, and in 1997, their second son Matteo was born. The couple would go on to divorce in 2002, although they remain friends and still live near each other to this day. Bocelli remarried in the same year to Veronica Berti, who became his manager. Together they had a daughter, Virginia, in 2012. Family is incredibly important to Bocelli.

“I feel like my parents have “shaped” me morally and ethically. They raised me in a united family and gave me values that have guided me throughout my life. I always admired those fathers who ran a family business and had the privilege of engaging their children. I thought this would be impossible in my case, but life proved me wrong. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a great joy to be able to have my son next to me on stage.”

Matteo, Bocelli’s second son is following in his father’s footsteps and is a rising star in the classical crossover music genre.

“Matteo lives and breathes music. While in high school, he studied piano at the local conservatory (where he is currently studying opera singing). He seems inclined to follow in his father’s footsteps, although an artistic career

depends on many factors, which can be tricky and difficult to understand. It takes more than just planning to achieve. But a good beginning bodes well.

“I think that, in music, Matteo has that special something that you cannot learn, which is talent. But his determination, hard work and spirit of sacrifice will be just as important. He will develop his skills and attitudes in his own time and refine his artistic abilities.

“Everyone has their own passions and talents. Fathers and mothers have the task of providing fertile ground for children to find their own way. My son Amos has a degree in piano performance, but he also studied spatial engineering, and this is the field in which he is working to build a career. Although Amos has more of a scientific mind, in his recent past, he faced some major musical challenges, including accompanying me on the piano at the 2013 Sanremo Music Festival, live on TV, in front of millions of viewers. At that exact time, eighteen years previously, Amos was about to be born, and I was singing on the same stage.”

The Bocelli family were overjoyed at the ‘late arrival’ of their only daughter, Virginia.

“To be a father again, fifteen years after the

birth of my second child was a great joy as well as a reminder not to rest on my laurels, professionally speaking. Becoming a father again now that I’m a mature man helped me be a less anxious, stronger parent, more capable of treasuring every moment with my children as they grow up next to me every day. She is our princess. She is the family’s sunshine. It is no coincidence that Virginia was born on the first day of spring, which is also the day when Veronica and I got married.”

Indeed, Virginia, now ten years old, is featured on Bocelli’s latest album, along with her brother Matteo for their first ever album together, A Family Christmas. Set for release on 21 October via Decca/Capitol Records and perfectly timed to coincide with the Australian tour, the recording showcases their multigenerational musical talent in various festive favourites.

The first single to be released is The Greatest Gift – a brand new, original track, written and arranged especially for this album, celebrating peace and love at Christmas time.

Coinciding with his nearly sold-out Australian tour, this holiday season, internationally renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli is teaming up with his 24-yearold son Matteo Bocelli and 10-year-old daughter Virginia Bocelli for their first-ever album together. A Family Christmas is set for release on 21 October via Decca/Capitol Records. The recording showcases their multi-generational musical talent in a range of festive favourites. while the music swells towards a rousing final chorus with a string orchestra and choir accompaniment. The album is produced by composer and multi-Grammy® and Academy Award® nominee Stephan Moccio (Celine Dion, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Barbra Streisand), an artist beloved by a growing legion of Australian audiences.

A Family Christmas captures the Bocelli festive spirit: “We are offering our small, intimate, and heartfelt gift to anyone who wishes to enjoy the soundtrack of Christmas in the Bocelli home,” the family says. The album features new renditions of traditional carols arranged for all three voices, including Away in a Manger and Joy To The World, plus popular Christmas tunes from around the world such as Feliz Navidad and another brand new track, Il Giorno Più Speciale, written by Federica Abbate, Cheope, Katoo and Andrea Bocelli.

Each of the three family members gets a chance to shine on the album with solo tracks, duets and trios. For Bocelli, the opportunity to work with Matteo and Virginia on this album has been a source of great joy.

“I think there is nothing more beautiful than making music with your kids. I consider it a privilege.”

Matteo Bocelli agrees, saying, “Singing these songs together, feeling the holiday warmth with my family is something really special. That’s what Christmas is about – making memories together to cherish forever. It’s really exciting to think that people will have a copy of our album sitting wrapped under the tree.”

Of his upcoming Australian tour, which is bound to be one for the history books, Bocelli says, “It will be like finally being able to hug many friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. The magic of a packed auditorium is incomparable.”

The fact that he has included Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley as one of the locations of his tour is a testament to the work of Michael Hope and his team, for which we can all be grateful for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see one of the world’s most successful classical music artists of all time.

“We have long-term relationships with the big concert promoters who know our venue well,” said Michael Hope, owner of Hope Estate.

“We’ve always worked on the premise of “build it, and they will come”, which has worked very well for us over the years, and this show is no exception. Our venue is spacious and was purpose-built with the right slope to ensure maximum viewing for the patrons. We have great food and drink options, there’s easy access for both production and patrons, and we’re supported by local businesses such as Rover Coaches and Port Stephens Coaches to make it a seamless experience. Plus, we are right in the heart of Wine Country. It’s a great night out under the stars and a brilliant performance.”

Perhaps the Hunter Valley reminds the Maestro of his home and the vineyards that have surrounded him his whole life. There are limited tickets still available for the Saturday 29 October concert at Hope Estate, as well as hospitality packages that include VIP seating, dining and beverages. In the words of Celine Dion - “If God had a singing voice, he would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.”

Valley Venues

Fifteen years ago, the touring landscape in Australia changed dramatically. Huge international acts previously only gracing the stages of major city venues began regularly adding Hunter Valley winery shows to their itinerary.

Now it's a bit of a surprise not to see the Hunter included in a tour schedule. It's not often, though, that we grab an Australian exclusive. Irish Celtic-infused pop icons, The Corrs, will return to Australia this November for a one-night-only performance at Hope Estate.

Joining them for an incredible evening of wine and song will be one of the most successful acts in British pop history Wet Wet Wet, Australia's catchiest songwriter, Ben Lee and emerging artist, Gaudion.

The Corrs have sold over 40 million albums worldwide and in excess of two million in Australia since their 1995 debut album Forgiven Not Forgotten crashed into the charts and stole our hearts. That first album gave us the incredible title track, the exquisite Heaven Knows, and arguably one of the biggest adult contemporary

songs of the modern era, Runaway.

Their third In Blue features their highest streaming ever. Breathless has received staggering 132 million plays on Spotify and counting!

Joining the Corrs will be Wet Wet Wet. In Australia for the first time since 1995. Having played to more than four million people worldwide, including a recordbreaking ten sold-out shows in one year at the SEC in Glasgow, the band has built a reputation as one of the best live acts ever produced by the UK.

Their song, Love Is All Around, from one of the most successful UK movies ever, Four Weddings And A Funeral, spent 15 weeks at the top of the charts. With smash hits like Sweet Little Mystery and Sweet Surrender, the band has spent over 500 weeks in the UK official album and singles charts, a record for any UK artist that still stands today.

The Corrs will perform at Hope Estate on 22 November. Tickets are on sale now – visit www. hopeestate.com.au.

STAR OF THE MONTH

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Over the years, you have learned that life's wheel turns in cycles and that bad times are eventually toppled by good fortune. This year, special situations bring special rewards. Take time to reflect on past actions, acknowledge your progress and realise that the best is yet to come. At work, the more you do - the more you get to do. There's also the notion of karma. Whatever way you look at it, this next year - expect financial recompense and recognition. You'll be super busy, but that's just fine because, in your mind, challenge is something to be conquered, not feared.

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

October whisks you out of the playground and plants you back at work, exactly where you want to be. After the 12th, you could meet all the right contacts. Use your powers of persuasion to revive a career plan. Expand your skills, and you should be rewarded with a professional breakthrough by the new year. The downside? Your love life might go on hold, but not for long.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

October threatens to send finances into a spin. Remember, while grand plans give you something to aspire to, they can also break the bank. Fortunately, your more sensible side should step in before spending gets too out of hand. In addition, a friend or relative may want your help. If they're being too intrusive, set them straight. Sometimes, even loved ones have to learn from their own mistakes.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

This month brings a rebirth, Pisces. You have had enough of life's harsher lessons. Now you're ready to put those lessons to the test by pursuing your true calling and passion. You're no longer satisfied with simply scratching the surface of life. You're prepared to go as deep as necessary to create something of lasting value. You want nothing less than the best and nothing short of your inner truth.

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Feeling confident? Great, because you now finally get to call the shots. No matter what mayhem the cosmos creates for the rest of us, this month, most Geminis should have fun and rise over any opposition. But not without some effort. Although auspicious planets surround you in October, you can't expect everything to fall into your lap. If you want something, go after it.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

Independence becomes your keyword this month. Expect changes in joint finances, so don't become too reliant on another's resources. And despite the occasional temptation to take a risk, cover your bets and don't borrow if you can't afford the repayments. Romance, though, offers more excitement. A sexier new you emerges. The prospects of making a long-term commitment are high.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

As anyone forced onto a stage will tell you, it can be overwhelming. This month you might find yourself in the spotlight but doing fine. Surges of brilliance could even earn you an encore or two. Finances, though, could become a source of concern. Those "must-have" urges may tempt even the strongest of wills. Sentimental romantic ties could also lead to a revisit of old grounds. If already coupled, take care.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

Forget about wanting a quiet life - it won't happen soon. This month you're swept along by high drama, with very little time for rest. This turns out to be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, you're encouraged to do what you do well but having this much licence gives your less responsible side free rein. The trick lies in balancing the two. That means dividing your time more evenly between work and play.

SAGITTARIUS

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

With a high-spirited tone set early on, you need no excuse to pursue your favourite pastimes: adventure and fun. The world needs its colourful characters, and Sagittarius, you're undeniably one of them - even if you occasionally test less optimistic souls with your utopian visions. In matters of the heart, you may need to choose between old love and new this month. Don't hurry. There's no rush.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

This month's full moon on the 10th has plenty of sway, meaning you're likely to act without considering the consequences. If you suddenly start to spend money recklessly or fantasise about an off-limits new flame, blame it on lunar effects. Just don't become too moonstruck. This phase is fleeting. You may have regrettably burned a bridge or two when it's passed. Professionally, you're more in control.

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY

This month, Taureans develop a knack for transforming the seemingly insignificant into potential success. Every event, every job and every setback becomes an opportunity for growth. Not only on a material level but emotionally and spiritually as well. And in choosing to love life, no matter what crosses your path, you create an infectious aura of joy and prosperity which can't help but captivate and inspire others.

You might feel like you're still dragging an anchor into October, Virgo, but expect greater freedom of movement as the weeks pass.

The residual delays and frustrations should finally dissolve by month's end, as Mars kindly spurs on a new achievement cycle. Goals and ambitions suddenly appear much clearer as you neatly side-step obstacles and develop a feel for the right direction.

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

De Iuliis Wines again took out the Best Red Wine of Show for the third year running at the Hunter Valley Wine Show. In addition to producing the Hunter Valley’s best Shiraz, they were also awarded a further three trophies and have been recognised as the 2022 Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year.

De Iuliis is the Italian surname of the owner and winemaker, Mike De Iuliis. It’s tricky to pronounce, so for those who are unsure how to pronounce it - it’s dee you lee iss (you’re welcome).

The winery is currently celebrating 20 years of producing wine here in the Hunter Valley, but the family’s winemaking roots go right back to Abruzzi, Italy.

Long before Mike’s father Joss purchased a cattle property on Lovedale Road in Pokolbin to begin his winemaking dream, the family made wine in Italy. Mike’s great grandfather Donato and his dad Joss would make the trek across the mountains of Abruzzi in Italy to fill barrels of must with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. They would return to Pescara on horseback, where the wine would be poured and shared amongst the community. The family migrated to Australia in the 1950s after the war, when ▶

Mike’s grandfather, Celeste (known as Charlie), who was a stone mason by trade, ended up at the Greta Migrant Camp. Joss grew up locally and became a mining engineer who had to commute to work through the Pokolbin area from Newcastle, where the family lived. He never lost his passion for food and wine or his fond memories of Italy. So, in 1987 they finally purchased a property on which they could establish their vines. They spent three years preparing the soil on the property and began producing wine in 1997, with their first proper vintage in 2002 with winemaker David Hook.

The family now operate three vineyards. The Lovedale Road property was initially planted with Chardonnay, Semillon, Verdelho, Merlot, and Shiraz, with Touriga being added in 2010 and, more recently, Montepulciano. Steven Vineyard, located directly across from the Hunter Valley Gardens on the hill behind the dam, was planted by Penfolds in 1968, with the third vineyard on Talga Road in Lovedale and is planted solely with Shiraz.

Mike was destined to become a winemaker, beginning his career by studying a Bachelor of Science at Macquarie University, then postgraduate studies of Oenology at Roseworthy Campus in 1999. He was selected for the Len Evans Tutorial, one of the world’s most exclusive wine schools and went on to become a judge, panel chair and chair of judges both nationally and internationally, all the while honing his own winemaking skills at the family vineyards and developing the brand and sterling reputation that they now enjoy. The winery has 5 Underlined Red Stars from the Halliday Wine Companion, which means it’s in the top 2% of wineries Australia-wide, and they are winning multiple awards and accolades. They have enjoyed a five-star Halliday rating for almost 19 years and five red stars for 11 of those.

“I’ve been thrilled with the success of my wines at various regional and state-wide wine shows,” said Mike.

“At the 2021 Hunter Valley Wine Show, we were awarded six trophies for three different wines. Of these trophies, I was most humbled by the Doug Seabrook Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show with our ’19 Limited Release Shiraz and the John Lewis Trophy for Best Museum Red with our ’09 Limited Release Shiraz.”

But it’s not all about the accolades and industry recognition for Mike. He sees his responsibility for sustainability practices within his industry as the future of winemaking and the next key determinant of wine quality.

“Our viticultural and farming practices are intrinsically linked to a long-term generational mindset. There is a need to ensure the environment is adequately cared for in this lifetime and for future generations. For the last five years, we’ve been using biochar across our vineyards, which has the capacity to be an immediate solution to reducing the global impact of farming,” said Mike

In addition to the use of biochar, the winery has been at the forefront of increased diversity in grape varieties. As the climate changes, growers look to alternative varieties that cope better in extreme conditions.

“We’ve picked the alternative varieties, including Pecorino, Touriga and Montepulciano, as they are more suitable to the changes in extreme weather patterns, and I believe that we were the first to plant them here in the Hunter. As climate change continues to increase our warmer summers, these varieties thrive in a warm, Mediterranean climate like the Hunter has.”

Mike is keen for the industry to develop a framework of sustainability practices so that consumers can be sure of the authenticity of claims by winegrowers and recognition for the hard work that committed winegrowers do can be appropriately awarded. Consumers can be sure that they are not being a victim of ‘greenwashing’.

“The next achievement on our sustainability journey will be certification for our vineyards and winery through Sustainable Winegrowers Australia. As producers, we are responsible for ensuring we are genuine in our actions.”

De Iuliis offers several different tasting experiences ranging from the “Made by Mike” small batch tasting for $10pp to the full winery tour with matching wine and cheese tasting and cellar door credit for $130 for two. Mike credits the team he has built around him for much of the winery’s success.

The cellar door is not the only way to experience De Iuliis wines. In 2005 the winery was approached by Dan Murphys to retail wines in their stores. Mike considered the proposal carefully and decided to sell three of his 16 wines to the outlet as a way to extend his brand reach and exposure.

“We only sell our three core range wines –Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon. We find that customers may try it, like it and then discover that there are many more wines to try here at the cellar door – like five other Shiraz they can taste. We can showcase the depth and range of our brand and give them a great experience.”

With affordable prices and the best cellar door experience in the region, De Iuliis is worth a visit to taste what all the awards are for. For more details, visit www.dewine.com.au.

One of the primary tenants of minimally invasive dentistry (MI) is that it is minimally invasive. This concept holds at its core that your tissues (especially ones that are not regenerative, like teeth) are incredibly valuable. Cutting away these tissues is an irreversible process. Furthermore, restoring your dental tissues, whether it be a crown, a filling, veneers or implants, is an expensive and complex process that has to survive in a VERY hostile environment – which brings me to an important downside of being minimally invasive (MI): Repairability.

RESTORATIVE OPTIONS: PART

The most likely possibilities are asking their friends (old fashioned method) and google (digital method).

I frequently consult with patients who have endeavoured to do their homework around their choice of the type of dentistry they think they want and need. I say endeavoured because, realistically, in today’s digital world, how could someone outside of the dental industry research this topic?

If a little bit of information can be dangerous, with a fair degree of certainty, millions of pages of it would have to be potentially deadly (if not seriously misleading). Part of the problem in writing about the type of dentistry I do is that it is quite a niche area.

When I read about something that is in the niche category, I’m always looking for not only the benefits but also the downside.

Repairability and repurposing are critical factors in sustainability. If we are to sustain dental function, we must become more conservative in the way we handle dental tissues – treating these tissues as precious. In every plan that I make for my patients, there are the seeds of repairability – how to overcome some problems that can arise from being minimally invasive. Sometimes the problems arise from being too conservative, sometimes from patient factors and sometimes, plain mishaps.

Generally, whatever the problem, the solution is frequently assisted by having tooth structure that we managed to conserve.

3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth

Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns)

CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.

Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)

Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses –they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have su ered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

3

Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day!

What if you have su ered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.

October is breast cancer awareness month, which means we'll be seeing loads of pink ribbons and be given plenty of opportunities to support this wonderful cause (like purchasing the Australian Women's Health Diary, for instance!)

You might also want to head down to the harbour on 8 October to witness a stunning display by Newcastle Hunter Dragons Abreast as they celebrate their own health by paddling the dragon boats, decorated with heads and tails and flowers, past the Marina and up the harbour.

Newcastle Hunter Dragons

Abreast are a team of breast cancer survivors who stay fit and healthy by paddling dragon boats. You may have seen the team paddling from the Carrington Rowing Shed up the harbour on Sunday mornings.

In addition to celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness month, the dragon boaters will travel to New Zealand for the international Breast Cancer Paddling Festival. There will be more than 80 teams participating in this colourful event as teams come together to celebrate their living with this disease.

Support breast cancer research and give hope to the 56 people diagnosed with breast cancer every day.

When the kid was little, we renovated an old house. It was not a mansion by any means, but it was exactly what I had always wanted. Somewhere I could sit and watch the sunset, space for the dogs, quirky little nods to music all over the house, and a kitchen I could dance in. The last part is more important than you might think. This was ours—our forever home.

Then three years ago, my mum got sick. In three weeks, we went from her working and having an active life with the kid to having a time frame for how long she was going to live. We are a pragmatic family and have certainly dealt with loss before, but this particular loss was not something I had prepared for. The day we found out, I walked out of my house to be with my mum. There wasn't even a discussion; it was obvious that was the thing to do.

For the six months we had, four generations of our family were together. We were surrounded by friends who offered both emotional and practical support. They threw me in the shower on the days I was paralyzed by fear. They were the people that kept me standing when it felt like the world had taken my legs out from under me. When the final days came, they were by my side the night I had to say goodbye.

It's impossible to go through something like that and not think about what your life will look like in the end. As well-meaning as it is, there are gaps in the system that leave people scared and alone. If you don't have family who are in a position to drop everything to help,

or you don't have money, it is easy to fall through the cracks. Three of my closest friends from school and I have oddly ended up with similar life circumstances. We all have one child each, and looking ahead, the idea that they would have to go through what we had just been through alone was too much to bare. Of course, you hope life brings them the kind of friends we found, but as this situation pointed out, there are no guarantees.

We had always talked about communal living in our retirement years. The Golden Girls but with our own space, and that one of us is a man. Tiny houses and a large communal space for being social seemed like the perfect plan. The joint costs of a nurse, a cook, and a housekeeper seem more affordable split four ways. First, it combats the loneliness that I'm sure you feel as you get older and less connected with the world. I have always been pushed out of my comfort zone to make friends because of work or because the kid was starting

school. When those things aren't a factor, it feels like it would be so easy to withdraw.

The other bonus is that when our time comes, none of our kids will have to go through it alone. At the very least, they will have each other. All brought together thanks to their weird parents. This is where the idea of Crone Valley was born. The male in our group is not thrilled about the name, but he will come around.

Everyone should feel that sense of security. Spending their last years surrounded by friendship, laughter and love. We have all been around long enough to know that plans can change, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't have one. Communal living seems more appealing with the rising cost of rent and the fact that we have just been through a pandemic that kept anyone living alone more disconnected than before. Maybe we should start before we all need a walking frame. Who would be part of your Crone Valley?

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?

SHARING IDEAS TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

City of Newcastle (CN) will bring together 100 people from all walks of life to help shape how the community's voice can best be heard to guide the city's future.

Your Newcastle, Your Voice is a public workshop to be held at Wallsend Library on 15 October as an initiative to inform CN's new four-year Community Engagement Strategy.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said CN's approach to engagement was based on inclusiveness, transparency, and responsiveness, and the new strategy would build on this to ensure all Novocastrians feel a part of the Council decision-making process.

"By involving the community in shaping our community engagement strategy, CN will better understand how the community want to be engaged but also if there are barriers to participating in providing feedback that will help us adapt our approach," Cr Nelmes said.

Earlier this year, CN released its Community Strategic Plan, Newcastle 2040, which was developed based on the input of 4,500 people from a broad community representation who shared their aspirations and priorities for Newcastle.

"Whether developing key strategies like Newcastle 2040, or major projects like Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade, we achieve better outcomes with the community actively engaging in decision-making," Cr Nelmes said.

The Your Newcastle, Your Voice community workshop will be held on Saturday, 15 October, from 10am to 1pm at Wallsend Library. The community can express their interest in participating in the workshop via City of Newcastle's website.

TRANSFORMING HUNTER STREET'S HIDDEN BRIDGE

A century-old bridge over Cottage Creek in Newcastle West is set for renewal, with City of Newcastle seeking to engage a consultant to progress the design for a replacement structure.

Hidden on Hunter Street, between Bellevue Street and Steel Street, the bridge plays a critical role in traffic movement in and out of the CBD.

"We are currently looking at options for replacing the bridge, so we can deliver a solution that is fit for purpose into the future within this busy section of Hunter Street," Ms Rigby said.

"There has been a lot of change in this area in the last decade, and as our city continues to evolve, it is important that our infrastructure continues to support this."

The early history of the bridge is unclear, with historic plans of the area showing a concrete structure was in place around the late 1880s. A tender for a detailed design consultant will be issued in the coming weeks to help develop the most suitable option for the eventual replacement of the bridge.

RACE FOR FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP BASE CAMP

Newcastle's premier No. 2 Sportsground has been short-listed as a dedicated team base camp training site during the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023. More than 30 nations will be travelling to Australia and New Zealand for the month-long tournament kicking off on 19 July through to 20 August 2023, and Newcastle's No. 2 Sportsground could become a homeaway-from-home for one of the teams.

For the first time in FIFA Women's World Cup history, 35 short-listed team base camp options are available for selection by Participating Member Associations to be used as a dedicated training site during the competition for their entire delegation.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle has cemented its reputation as a major sporting and events host destination and would jump at the chance to welcome a FIFA Women's World Cup team.

"City of Newcastle is committed to elevating women in sport , and we are excited at the prospect of welcoming some of the world's best female footballers to Newcastle in preparation for a month of elite and exciting international competition," Cr Nelmes said.

"Newcastle's No. 2 Sportsground is a worldclass facility, home to the A-league Womens' Jets, and regularly welcomes elite-level sporting fixtures like the USA national soccer team who trained on the grounds in preparation for their games against the Matildas last year.

"As the world's biggest women's sporting event, it is expected that more than one billion people across the world will tune in to watch the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, and City of Newcastle would be thrilled to welcome one of the teams for their preparations.

"Hosting a team would provide an invaluable opportunity to showcase Newcastle's broader attractions to players and their extensive support contingent whilst offering valuable flow-on effects for the city's local economy.

FIFA is expected to confirm team base camps by 15 December 2022.

MAITLAND WINS HOSTING RIGHTS

TO NETBALL STATE TITLES

Thousands of netballers from across New South Wales will converge on Maitland Park next June after the city won hosting rights for the 2023 Netball NSW Senior State Titles.

From Saturday, 10 June to Monday, 12 June, Maitland will host hundreds of matches across the Opens Division 1 and U17 and U15 Divisions 1 & 2. Newcastle will play host to the remaining divisions. It's the first time since 2016 that Maitland has hosted the event.

Netball in Maitland has recently undergone a significant transformation, thanks to a rejuvenation of the precinct jointly funded by the NSW Government, Maitland City Council, and Maitland Netball Association.

Worth around $3 million in total, the works saw the construction of a brand new amenities facility and the resurfacing and floodlighting of the facility's 32 netball courts, which has revitalised the precinct.

"Bringing this tournament to town shows our desire as a city to bid for and attract significant national and regional events to Maitland, and I know that many of our local businesses will be looking forward to the traffic over a holiday weekend," said Mayor of Maitland, Philip Penfold.

LAKE MAC SWIM CENTRES DIVE INTO THE FUTURE

All Lake Macquarie swim centres will open year-round and host dedicated learn-to-swim pools under Council's draft Aquatics Facilities Strategy, which is now on public exhibition.

Lake Macquarie City Council Section Manager Community Assets Brendan Callander said community feedback had supported the development of the draft strategy, which aims to expand and improve Council's six aquatics facilities over the next two decades.

"We're focused on building a strong swimming community accessible to everyone at all times, supporting opportunities for social connections, recreation and exercise. Now, we're inviting the community to have their say on the draft strategy during public exhibition," Mr Callander said.

Council owns swim centres at Speers Point, Morisset, Charlestown, Toronto, West Wallsend and Swansea.

If approved, the strategy would deliver a new heated indoor learn-to-swim pool, waterplay area and car park upgrade at Swansea Swim Centre, as well as a grandstand replacement and platform lift to improve access for people with disability.

The existing splash pad at Charlestown Swim Centre would be replaced with a waterplay zone and a new platform lift, while a new heated indoor learn-to-swim pool and platform lift would also be delivered at West Wallsend Swim Centre.

Speers Point would host a large water play area, a new grandstand, improvements to parking and a year-round warm-water program and learn-to-swim pool.

Morisset Swim Centre would have its toddler pool replaced with a waterplay zone and a heated indoor learn-to-swim pool added alongside car park improvements.

Have your say on the draft strategy online at shape.lakemac.com.au. Submissions close on Monday, 24 October.

HUNTER HOMES & Lifestyle

Showcasing the businesses behind the beautiful homes of the Hunter

Perry Homes Opens Two New Stunning Display Homes!

Multi-award-winning home builder Perry Homes has unveiled two inspiring display homes in the sought-after Hereford Hill estate in Lochinvar.

Established in 1993, Perry Homes is firmly established as a trusted and respected builder in the region. The future is certainly bright for this solid builder with new builds on the rise, new land releases coming up throughout the Hunter and Central Coast regions and two new display homes just opened in Lochinvar.

New Home Consultant Ben Hancock said, “unveiling a new display is always an exciting milestone and provides a great opportunity for people to see the quality of homes that we build as well as the latest trends in home design and interior styling. And the Lavante and Azure certainly set the bar high here.”

The Lavante is a new design to the Perry Homes portfolio. Perfect for a busy family, it boasts four bedrooms, three living areas, a dedicated mud room, study nook and drinks bar. The Lavante oozes Hamptons charm. The master suite features VJ panelling and a luxurious ensuite whilst the open plan living,

kitchen and dining area certainly takes its place as the heart of the home with a stone surround fireplace and enviable outlook.

The popular Azure design showcases the Executive façade and is a firm favourite. On walking into the home, you will be amazed at the amount of natural light flowing through the home, which is emphasised by the light colour tones and timber features. Raised ceilings, along with a stunning, raked ceiling to the open plan living area, really inspires the way this home is fashioned – a beautiful, relaxed vibe.

Ben added, “the feedback on both homes has been exceptional. The affectionately coined ‘great room’ in the Lavante has people excited. It is perfect for entertaining with a large kitchen and expansive open-plan living area overlooking the outdoor entertaining space. There is a formal lounge at the front of the home and a rumpus room at the rear connecting to the outdoor space.

“The styling has really hit the mark. Our clients want to personalise their space, whether it be by modifying the floorplan or by adding

finishing touches like feature panelling, a fireplace or even just some custom shelving. These two homes are a fabulous example of what our clients can create.”

Located just 15 minutes from Maitland CBD, Hereford Hill in Lochinvar is a 25-hectare master-planned community set to deliver some 280 home sites. Stage 16 is currently available with land ranging in size from 450 to 755 sq m and priced from $424,000 to $497,000.

Looking for a home and land package? Perry Homes has home and land packages available from $790,000.

If you are thinking of building or interested in one of the many home and land packages available, visit Perry Homes’ new display homes located at 15 & 17 Springfield Drive, Lochinvar, open Friday to Tuesday, 10am to 4pm or contact Ben on 0435 956 546 or ben.hancock@ perryhomes.com.au.

A New Way to Live and Work in the Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is a wine region of international renown, a food-lover's paradise, and a premium lifestyle destination. As the area grows, so does the number of people who want to both live and work in the area.

The Urban Series at Huntlee has just introduced a new type of living, a first for the Hunter Valley. Nestled in the growing town centre, the new development offers one and

two-storey townhouses, utilising small land footprints in the most spacious way possible. It's the perfect solution for anyone wanting a modern, low-maintenance home without all the hassles of a large property.

The home designs provide amazing open spaces, with modern fittings and clever layouts. It feels like you're in a regular home, however, the premium design extends to the

whole development. With master-planned communities walkability is key, meaning the health benefits are built in. You can stroll to the shops quicker than you can drive. And, with the new park just opened, there's a place to take the kids, walk the dog, or just stretch your legs.

"This is something new for the Hunter Valley," says Huntlee Sales Director Rob Crane.

"The Urban Series is very much modelled on the world's best town centres where residential meets retail, with everything just a short walk away."

Alongside 11 specialty shops, Huntlee has a Coles, a tavern and a KFC, with a hardware and a gym on the horizon, alongside governmentplanned infrastructure like primary schools as the region surpasses population milestones.

Now on sale, The Urban Series adds a whole new class of house and land options to Huntlee's popular residential packages. First home buyers will appreciate the landonly options starting at $215K, an entry point unheard of in the current market.

Offering the very contemporary lock-andleave lifestyle, The Urban Series is the perfect choice for busy people who want to live in the Hunter Valley in a modern home with all the conveniences.

Hunter adds another builder to Australia's Largest Home Builders list

Three Hunter-based builders have been revealed in the top 100 of Australia's largest residential builders. The annual HIACOLORBOND® steel Housing 100 Report ranks Australia's largest 100 residential builders based on the number of homes commenced each year.

"Continuing its move up the ladder, Hunter-based MJH Group (NXT Building Group) became the second largest home builder nationally. MJH Group also took second spot on the list of largest detached house builders nationally, and second spot on the list of the largest semi-detached dwelling builders nationally, " said HIA Hunter Executive Director Craig Jennion.

"MJH Group, which trades predominantly in NSW as McDonald Jones Homes and Mojo Homes, also retained its established mantle as the #1 home builder in NSW. Belmont-based Montgomery Homes moved up the national list 22 spots to be ranked the 66th largest home builder nationally and 19th largest in NSW."

"Placed 70th Nationally, 20th largest in NSW and on the list for

the first time, was Heatherbraebased Hunter Homes. As a result of their inaugural listing Hunter Homes also made the list of the Biggest Movers in 2021/22," said Mr Jennion.

The key highlights from this year's HIA-COLORBOND® steel Housing 100 Report 2021/22 show that the largest 100 residential builders:
