It won't just be the falling leaves rolling down our streets this month when the Autumn Alive program rolls out right across Newcastle, bringing life and colour to our beautiful city streets and an atmosphere guaranteed to make us feel more alive than we have for quite some time. City of Newcastle, in collaboration with Civic Theatre, Newcastle Art Gallery, Newcastle Library, and Newcastle Museum, will partner with the CBD's diverse and unique local businesses to celebrate the city with alfresco dining and live performances, curated night-time walking trails and even Disney movies for the kids. All events are free to attend, and there is something for the whole family to enjoy. Read more on page 20. It's fantastic to be able to showcase not just this event but a number of other events to keep us entertained, educated and satiated this month – our social diaries are fast filling up, and it's onwards and upwards from here. With everything from the Maitland Heritage Festival to the Big 90s Party, the Caravan and Camping Show, the Fast & Loud Festival, celebrations of culture and intoxicating dance performances, it seems there really is something for everyone this month, and it looks like we are just warming up! If City of Newcastle is on a mission to tempt young and old back into the CBD for a series of 40+ free night-time events designed to help revitalise business, arts and culture after more than two years of pandemic challenges and frustrations, then it appears the whole region is set to follow, with the collective goal of living life to its fullest. So what are you waiting for?
Enjoy!

Local historians will be on hand to inform about Maitland’s rich architecture, its notable residents, pubs, churches and events. Representing the 19th century at the festival will be Sanjex Seratti and other characters from the Newy Steampunks crew. A Critical and Playful Glance into Humanity CATAPULT DANCE WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Catapult Dance is a choreographic hub and a professional contemporary dance company based in Newcastle and the Hunter. It cultivates and champions the professional development of mid-career and emerging professional dance choreographers and multi-disciplinary artists and commissions new dance works with scores by Newcastle composers. At Maitland Regional Art Gallery on May 20 and 21, Catapult Dance will perform Human Remains, choreographed by Omer Backley-Astrachan, with performances by Alexandra Ford, Nicholas Jachno, Mikayla Nangle, Remy Rochester and Sophia Van Gent and music by James Hazel. Human Remains was created for Catapult Company and premiered in March 2020 as part of Mixed Bill in Newcastle and Sydney. Described as a critical and playful glance at humanity in the 21st century, the piece is set in the aftermath of an apocalypse caused by
humanity's hubris. Human Remains inhabits a dystopian world emerging from the ruins of what was once a glorious kingdom. The survivors in this harsh terrain emerge from the ashes, revealing beauty, grace, pain and power. The choreographer, Omer BackleyAstrachan, is an independent artist experienced in choreography, installations, film, multimedia and movement research. Originally from Israel, Backley-Astrachan is Sydney Dance Company's Pre-Professional Year program course coordinator. His works have been performed in venues and festivals both in Australia and overseas, such as Carriageworks, PACT, Sydney Fringe Festival, Fringe World Festival, Suzanne Dellal Centre, Tel Aviv Summer Dance Festival, Newcastle Art Gallery, The Lock-Up Gallery (Newcastle) and State Theatre Centre (Perth). Backley-Astrachan has been working with Catapult since 2016 in a long-standing
creative relationship that has played an integral role in his professional development as a choreographer. The idea for Human Remains came from his observation that many stories today focus on the individual as victim, rising above external factors with society as the aggressor. He wanted to explore that from the other direction with the concept of individualism as the aggressor leading to the breakdown of social structures and community with chaos as the outcome. The piece explores connectivity and seems apt for the times we live in now. "I've got friends, dancers, travelling to Europe expressing discomfort at performing during such difficult times with covid and everything that's happening in Ukraine," says BackleyAstrachan. "But I think now is the perfect time to inspire others to invest in their mental and spiritual health and enrichment. Connection through art and creativity is critical during hard times." Performing Human Remains in the Maitland Regional Art Gallery is a way to remove alienation from the art form of dance and have it reach a wider audience – one that wouldn't necessarily attend contemporary dance performances. "When you go to an art gallery, there is an expectation that you don't have to understand the narrative of the creative pieces you will view to enjoy it. Dance is often measured by its understandability. We wanted to remove this expectation and perform in a space where it doesn't exist. It's not a theatre – it's performed in a different context. Some things in an art gallery you will connect with, and others you can enjoy without fully understanding. You can admire and appreciate the art's form, flow, colour and context, and our piece is no different." Human Remains Maitland Regional Art Gallery 20–21 May at 7pm Tickets from www.eventbrite.com.au

Host an Australia's
BIGGEST MORNING TEA
your way this May
The sound of kettles boiling is set to ring across the Hunter on Thursday, 19 May, for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council. This year, Cancer Council hopes to recruit over 7,970 generous morning tea hosts and raise over $4 million to help everyone affected by cancer right across the state. All donations fund Cancer Council's life-saving research, prevention, support programs and information. Since Australia's Biggest Morning Tea began in 1994, millions of Australians have come together over a cuppa and a bite to eat to support those affected by cancer. By hosting or attending a morning tea, you will help Cancer Council continue its life-saving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs for people affected by cancer. Cancer Council NSW CEO Professor Sarah Hosking said Australia's Biggest Morning Tea events not only provide a chance to fundraise, but they're also an opportunity to connect with others. 18
The markets will also endeavour to promote and support local not for profit groups each month by offering complimentary market sites to promote awareness of their organisations or to fundraise (conditions will apply). Organisers of the Hamilton Markets, PWP Events and Marketing, will also be working with the local Hamilton Business Industry Association group to support local small businesses in the area by bringing people into Hamilton to discover all that is on offer, just a short stroll from the markets. The Hamilton Markets are the latest venture of PWP Events and Marketing, who have been operating events and markets predominately in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for over 25 years. PWP currently operate the Warners Bay Foreshore Markets (third Saturday of each month), Music in the Podium and several large Lake Macquarie events, including the Lake Macquarie Christmas Twilight Markets and the Wallsend Winter Fair. PWP is looking forward to welcoming new stallholders and talented regular stallholders to the vibrant new Hamilton Markets. For further information and stall bookings, please email hamiltonmarkets@outlook.com.
"There have been significant challenges connecting with people over the past few years. Australia's Biggest Morning Tea offers a chance for communities to come together and reconnect over a cuppa for a good cause. "People are often surprised to hear that one Australian is diagnosed with cancer approximately every four minutes. That's what makes this campaign so important; it provides a space to learn about the challenges faced by those affected by cancer and raise vital funds for cancer care and research. "A donation of as little as $10 can provide online support for people affected by cancer to learn more about their cancer risk or what diagnosis means – from the comfort of their own home. "Every minute, every hour, every day, Cancer Council is here to help those affected by cancer." In 2022, the official day to host a morning tea is Thursday, 19 May, however, participants can register to host at any time throughout May or June. Make a cuppa for a cause this May or June. For more information or to register, visit www.biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85.

What's On
AT THE CIVIC THEATRE THIS MONTH Newcastle's beautiful Civic Theatre has some amazing live shows lined up for you this month - from a reimagined iconic gothic tale and classical symphony to cricket tales and belly laughs with so much comedy; there is so much to see on stage.
AARON MCGRATH PLAYING JOHNNY MULLAGH IN BLACK COCKATOO
Brisbane's shake&stir theatre company bring Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre from the page to the stage. Following a childhood spent suffering at the hands of her cruel aunt, Jane finds employment at Thornfield Hall – the impressive yet mysterious home of Edward Rochester. As Jane and Rochester become inexplicably drawn to each other, the dark secrets locked within the
walls of Thornfield start to unravel, forcing Jane on a heart-wrenching journey toward truth and freedom. If cricket, history, and untold heroic stories are more your style, try Black Cockatoo by Ensemble Theatre. Based on legendary First Nations cricketer Johnny Mullagh and Australia's first international sporting team, this is a story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility. Funny and incredibly moving, Black Cockatoo is a new artistic collaboration between iconic Australian writer Geoffrey Atherden (Mother & Son) and former Sydney Festival Artistic Director Wesley Enoch (Black Diggers). The Civic will also welcome Sydney Symphony Orchestra's Energy & Elation. Experience spirited music by Mendelssohn, Haydn & Dvořák for one night only (don't miss out!). And finally, we cannot miss the opportunity to mention that there are plenty of laughs to be had in May, with over ten separate comedy events scheduled for your amusement. Hot tip for mum's day: show tickets make a wonderful present! Or why not invite mum out to the High Tea event in the gorgeous City Hall on Mother's Day. CITY OF NEWCASTLE
Buzzing with
WORDS LIANE MORRIS THIS MAY, THE CITY OF NEWCASTLE IS ON A MISSION TO TEMPT YOUNG AND OLD BACK INTO THE CBD FOR A SERIES OF 40+ FREE NIGHT-TIME EVENTS DESIGNED TO HELP REVITALISE BUSINESS, ARTS AND CULTURE AFTER MORE THAN TWO YEARS OF PANDEMIC CHALLENGES AND FRUSTRATIONS. The eclectic mix of events has been dubbed Autumn Alive and is coordinated by the City of Newcastle, aiming to encourage the community to experience the cultural, retail and hospitality heart of the city from 29 April until 21 May. The program is made possible through the funding support of more than $500,000 from the NSW Government's CBDs Revitalisation Program, which was set up in response to the impact of the pandemic on the hospitality, event and arts and culture sectors. In collaboration with Civic Theatre, Newcastle Art Gallery, Newcastle Library, and 20
Newcastle Museum, the City of Newcastle is partnering with the CBD's diverse and unique local businesses to celebrate the city with alfresco dining and live performances, curated night-time walking trails and even Disney movies for the kids. All events are free to attend, and there is something for the whole family to enjoy. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the Autumn Alive program would provide a much-needed economic boost to small businesses and the city's arts and cultural sector. "City of Newcastle is committed to delivering and supporting community programs and events like Autumn Alive, as they are critical to our city's post-pandemic recovery," Cr Nelmes said. "Newcastle's city centre is our cultural heart, and a thriving CBD is the key to attracting people to help stimulate the economy. Minister for Enterprise, Investment, and Trade Stuart Ayres said Newcastle has
transformed significantly during the past two decades and is now home to cutting-edge industry and has amazing cultural offers with fantastic liveability. "Initiatives like this one in Newcastle send a clear message that our CBDs are buzzing and back to business," Mr Ayres said. "We are doing all we can through our $50 million CBDs Revitalisation Program to encourage and entice people back into our CBDs, as this will help create jobs, drive our economy and showcase NSW as a vibrant place to live, work and visit." Autumn Alive will kick off at Pacific Park on 29 April with electronic music, DJs, a silent disco and performances by Curious Legends and Catapult Dance Artists. New interactive lightbox installations will be unveiled on the night, displaying iconic artworks from Newcastle Art Gallery's collection. The month-long program also features an outdoor cinema experience at Museum Park,
alfresco dining at Civic Theatre, a pop-up drag bar at Newcastle Library, night-time walking trails to highlight the city's restaurants, venues and boutique retailers, culminating with a final night street party on Laman Street. At the program's launch, Newcastle Councillor and Community and Culture Advisory Committee Chair Carol Duncan highlighted the critical need for the program, speaking about the devastation that the arts, culture and hospitality sectors have suffered and noting that there's still a long way to go. "The Autumn Alive program has wide appeal and shines a spotlight on the city's cultural venues and local businesses, Cr Duncan said. "It's exciting that we've partnered with 53 local businesses to help drive people back into the city. We're not just about roads, rates and rubbish – we're about people and jobs too, and I'm proud to be working in a space where we can support creative artists and help drive business for our local community."
"There's been a real effort to reinvent how we use our city's cultural facilities and venues. It's wonderful to see a venue like Newcastle Library remain open at night and transform into a drag bar featuring local performers like Timberlina and Foxxe Faux in what is sure to be a super splendid event!" Partner businesses are being supported financially through the State Government grant to trade late, engage live performance artists and create special offers to entice customers and complement the programming, including providing food and drink options for the outdoor cinema and Pacific Nights. Businesses on the self-guided experience trails will stay open late and, in some cases, offer live performances. The trails can be accessed using the City of Newcastle's CN App. To compliment the self-guided walking tours, Newcastle Afoot is offering bookable, guided and curated tours featuring the partner businesses. At Press Coffee and Book House, for example, they are opening their doors for nighttime offerings on 13 and 14 May with poetry readings, Autumn Alive themed cocktails and live music. Cheralyn Coffey of Press Coffee and Book House says that their business was severely impacted by the pandemic, and she sees Autumn Alive as an excellent opportunity to showcase her business and re-engage with the community. "Our business was deeply impacted by the pandemic as our customer base practically disappeared overnight. The University of Newcastle directed all students to study online
and not attend the city campuses; teaching and administration staff followed as the campus went into lockdown. Also, 80–90% of city-based state and federal government workers were directed to work from home, meaning those customers who relied on us to provide their daily coffee fix were gone."
"WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO BE A PART OF THIS PROJECT AND LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING NEWCASTLE RE-EMERGE AS A PREMIER CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT DESTINATION. " "It feels like our cultural precinct has been starved of sustenance, and projects like Autumn Alive will contribute to bringing new life back into the city. As a business that nestles itself within Newcastle's cultural cocoon, we can join in unison with other small businesses and venues to let the world know that Newy's spirit is still alive and kicking!! "During the Autumn Alive project, The Press Coffee and Book House will be keeping Continued next page ▶ 21
(Continued) its doors open to welcome new and existing customers into our cosy little space. There will be live music performances by Michael Tee (Scattered Order, Ya Ya Choral and A Cloakroom Assembly) and the beginning of a new era for us, as we introduce a selection of Australian wines, espresso martinis, mulled wine and some tasty morsels to nibble on while you chill. The Kingfish at Honeysuckle are preparing takeaway picnic hampers and hand-crafted gelato for Movies in Museum Park. Jackson Cassidy of The Kingfish says that the pandemic has had a considerable impact on their business and that by partnering with Autumn Alive, they hope to encourage the local community and tourists to come out and enjoy the beautiful city of Newcastle. "As the season changes, this is a targetted activation to remind everyone how stunning and enjoyable the harbour and the rest of the city is, even in the cooler months. Our waterfront dining room transitions from openair to a cosy and warm, intimate space. "We are excited to be a part of this amazing project and can't emphasise enough the importance that projects like these have on assisting businesses like ours. We are so grateful to the City of Newcastle and everyone involved for helping make this project happen." 22

To celebrate the resilience and lift the spirits of the Lismore Community after the devastating floods, Lismore City Council, Chugg Entertainment and Helium will stage a free concert – ONE FROM THE HEART - at Lismore Showgrounds on Sunday, 15 May. Starring The Buckleys, Darlinghurst, Paul Kelly and Dan Kelly, Daryl Braithwaite, Sheppard, Lime Cordiale, Jon Stevens and Lismore's own, Grinspoon, each family within the most affected areas - postcodes 2471, 2472 and 2480 - will be able to order four tickets to the show from Moshtix. There will also be an additional 1,000 tickets available to purchase for everyone outside the nominated postcodes from 8am on Saturday, 30 April (also from Moshtix). Lismore's Mayor, Steve Krieg, was one of over 3,000 locals who were personally impacted by the flood devastation, losing his family home and business. "Rather than a fundraiser, the council were looking for a free community event - something
significant and authentic that could shift the town's energy from shock to hope. The obvious 'go to' person was Michael Chugg," said Sports Marketing Australia Director Rick Sleeman. "I got a call from Rick, and the same day we had the first Zoom call with the Mayor and his team. The idea and reasoning behind staging a concert resonated with me - that this was not about raising money but raising the community's spirits. The lead time was incredibly tight; what would normally take four months of planning had to be turned around in six weeks. So, my first call was to [Helium Records] Mark Pope," Michael Chugg AM said Both Chugg and Pope were an integral part of the team that delivered the Wave Aid, Live Earth and Sound Relief Benefit Concerts in 2005, 2007 and 2009. They had the experience, knowledge, contacts and energy to make the impossible possible. If you want to be part of this historic and hopeful event, head to Moshtix to secure your tickets.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder This month, Opera Hunter presents the Tony Award-winning Musical Comedy A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder written by Robert Freedman and Steven Lutvak. Born as the 1907 English novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal – by Roy Horniman, it was developed as an American co-production
of The Hartford Stage in Connecticut and The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. A parody about an Edwardian serial killer becomes an American romp about upper-class greed and hypocrisy. The 1949 British film Kind Hearts and Coronets was another concept based on this novel.
The musical features one singer/actor playing the entire D’Ysquith family of nine people! This role is played by Drew Holmes in a virtuoso performance, while Monty, the ambitious distant cousin hoping to inherit the D’Ysquith estate, is played by Shaun Young. They are matched in vocal and acting artistry by Nicolette Black as Sybella, Amber Lewis as Phoebe, and Trish Aumuller as Miss Shingle. The excellent ensemble cast of three women and three men features Kate Dunn, Freddy Hellier, Thomas James, Brooke Littlewood, Jade Shearman and James Walker. The show is directed by CONDA awardwinner Zac Smith, with musical direction by Mathew Gallimore, choreography and assistant direction by Chiara Patalano, costumes by award-winning designer Coralie Lewis and accompaniment by Kieran Norman. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder will play a limited season at Warners Bay Theatre on 24, 25 and 26 June, followed by 1, 2, and 3 July. Major sponsor for the production is Lake Macquarie City Council, and tickets can be purchased from Sticky Tickets at http://tix.yt/ loveandmurder.

Horo Scope ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.
STAR OF THE MONTH TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY Taureans are known for being efficient and reliable. On top of this, you plan wisely and save, although sometimes it all seems too much effort for too little gain. But you'll soon breathe a sigh of relief as life's frustrations start to ease. In the past, you've been far too accepting of any overwhelming workload; and therefore have missed out on too many of life's pleasures. But, if it's more play you're after, there's good news. Here's a year when Uranus encourages romance while Mars offers self-indulgence. Or perhaps it's time for pampering and romance. You choose.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Long-term goals come closer to reality as Jupiter nudges forward in your sector of hopes and wishes. You just need to introduce focus. Use May to draw up a list of items you want to achieve. Follow up with a minimum of three plans of action, and you should see results within a few months. Geminis are the alchemists of the zodiac, after all. So why not apply this magic to your love life as well? Conjure up some romance. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Ambitious Jupiter encourages serious breakthroughs at work. Though right now you might still be feeling a tad overworked and underpaid, sometime this month, recognition and rewards will follow. Business travel is likely, as is an increased cash flow. The biggest threat, however, seems to be extravagance. As more cash arrives, there seems to be little chance of it accruing interest. 26
LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST With delightful Jupiter settling in your sector of adventure for the next year - you're encouraged to expand your horizons. You've always been curious about the world, but even more so now. From here on, there's too much happening to keep you still. Even unexpected turns of events won't faze you. For many, love and work become entwined. And by year's end, you're well and truly heading towards serious commitment. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER Last month's uncertainty and chaos continue thanks to Virgo's nemesis, a meddling Mars so steer clear of launching new projects. On the plus side, the first few weeks are an ideal time to reassess plans that didn't work out the first time. Fine-tune your CV, or add bells and whistles to the proposal you thought you had finished. You can always improve upon that initial flash of genius. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER You're encouraged to act on a career plan previously left on hold. Expect a hectic social scene with unexpected invitations over the next few weeks. To top off a delightful month, intimate relationships find a comfortable level of understanding. For singles, too, the prospect of finding long-term commitment runs high. Through May, whether in work, love or play - all things seem possible. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER May is about love and maintaining important connections. Feisty Mars has settled in your love sector, and the Sun sends sparks through your relationships. Romance, too. If you're single, this is the time to get out there and make the first move. You'll be attracting attention for all the right reasons. Likewise, couples should clear time for carnal delights. Why can't every month be like this? SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER The Sun fires up your fitness sector, encouraging you to revisit the health regime you promised to start in early summer. If you failed the first time, try again. Even better news: a loving Venus stirs up romantic relationships. If single, you may not be for long. Even just a casual fling could help satiate desires. For coupled Sagittarians, passionate Venus does her best to reignite cooling embers.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY An unsettled cosmos brings the full spectrum of emotions and perhaps some conflict. But you're not entirely innocent in all this. You can't treat love as a battleground and not expect warfare. Take care that the past doesn't spill into present battles. Others have been waiting patiently for your commitment, so make your mind up before they move on without you. If it's peace you're after, wave the white flag. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Pluto continues to teach you life-changing lessons on how to use or lose your personal power. You can be generous to a fault but with a tendency to give all your energy away - only to be left feeling depleted. Recently you've started to see how this undermines your energy. It's one thing to give but another to know when to hold something back. This is a valuable lesson. May is your time to receive, Aquarius. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH Jupiter brings blessings wherever it settles, and for the next year, it's finances and your hopes and dreams that soar. Whether it's to fulfil a long-held ambition or start your own business - success beckons. You're drawn to new out-of-the-ordinary groups and organisations. Of course, some discretion is advised. After all, when Jupiter moves on in a year - you may want to make a quick exit too. ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL Jupiter pulls you in the right direction this month. Yet, being stubborn, you could resist its benevolent tug and cling to old ways. Remember, where you simply give an inch, you could gain a mile. Sometimes you wait for events to push you into a decision that you should reach on your own. Go on, Aries - take a leap of faith. You've been set specific karmic goals, which, undoubtedly, you'll reach.

What’s Cooking at The Co-Op!
If you love seafood, and you want it to be as fresh as possible – then a trip to the Fisherman’s Cooperative is a must! This month we caught up with Robert Gauta to find out a little more about the 'Co-Op.' 28
• EAT DRINK TRAVEL
Hi Robert! Can you tell us a bit about the Fisherman's Cooperative? The Co-op commenced providing services to local commercial fishers in 1945, with the main goal being to get Co-op members' catch to market. Today we have six receiving depots located over a 200km coastline area between Tuggerah and Seal Rocks, with three of our own retail stores at Wickham, Tacoma and Swansea. We manage other tenancies (including restaurants, retail and office space) and employ over 50 local people. We have 105 members who are active commercial fishers in this region and receive about 200 different species during the year from members. The Co-op is the single largest NSW supplier of Fresh Seafood to Sydney Fish Market, the largest Fish Market in the Southern Hemisphere, and represents approximately 10% of NSW Supply. What does a typical day at the Co-Op look like? Work begins early preparing deliveries to our retail stores and preparing for the day's trade. Ice is harvested for the day's catch and seafood displays. Fishermen begin to come in and unload their product. We are also constantly
sourcing the best possible product from other areas such as Coffs Harbour, Wallis Lake and all over NSW. Product is purchased for retail and wholesale local sales; the remainder is loaded to be transported to Sydney Fish Market in the afternoon for Auction the next morning. What can people expect to find at 'The Co-Op' if they've never been before? What are the differences between the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle venues? The Co-op stocks fresh local seafood, and we sell over 190 types of seafood over the course of the year. So basically - if it's not in stock, it hasn't been caught. Tacoma and Swansea stores are much smaller than our Wickham store. However, customers can ask the staff to get any product in from Wickham if available. And finally - what's in season in May that we should be looking out for? May is in the midst of our King Prawn season. Weather permitting, our fishers will unload last night's catch in the mornings, ready for sale in our shops. The "Mullet Run" is in full swing. Fresh Local Mullet caught off our beaches will be available as they are harvested.

New Lambton Students Back Backpack Support for Flood Schools New Lambton students’ and families’ support for floodaffected schools on the North Coast has been recognised by the organisers of ‘The Backpack Venture.’ Katherine Woodbine, one of the Port Stephens mums who set up the collection and filling of backpacks with school supplies for needy schools at the start of the year, has acknowledged the New Lambton Public School community’s contribution. Principal Justine Abell says the school captain Hamish Allen saw the initiative as a way of helping schools that had lost so many resources in the floods. “Hamish contacted the organiser and then arranged for our students and their
families to donate school backpacks and all the essential items students need in them pens, pencils, crayons, textas, erasers, rulers, notebooks, drink bottles, lunch boxes, notebooks and handballs – to be collected at the school. “The response was fantastic, and more than 60 filled backpacks are on their way to Upper Coopers Creek Public School and Cudgen Public School to help those families out. “I can’t say a big enough ‘thank-you’ to everyone who’s helped out, and I’m sure the fact that the people on the North Coast know there’s support for them elsewhere in the State will be a big help, as well as the actual donations.”

On Tour With the Kid CHLOE O'SULLIVAN
Two Lives Well Lived On Good Friday, the world lost two of the most amazing men that I ever knew. One was Cessnock born and bred golfing legend Jack Newton, and the other was my Uncle Keith. They both seemingly lived such different lives but so similar in the things that matter in the end. Jack Newton's sporting achievements have been widely commented on since his passing. I didn't know Jack when he played golf at an elite level - playing shot for shot with the best golfers in the world. I do, however, remember the news reports of Jack's accident. I was only a kid when this giant of a man, one of the best golfers the country has ever produced, was struck by the propellor of a small plane. He sustained lifethreatening injuries, including losing an arm, an eye, and massive abdominal trauma. Jack spent months in intensive care. Son and daughter, Clint and Kristie, were both under five at the time. Despite mixed feelings from others about how the kids would cope with seeing their father's injuries, after some time had passed, Jackie took the kids in to see him, and they barely noticed all the hospital equipment; 34
• FAMILY & COMMUNITY
it was just their dad. Jackie knew instinctively that it was the thing he needed to make him fight. His family was then and always remained his reason to live. Jackie knew this because they were a team. They remain one of the few examples I have of solid and enduring love. I grew up having no relationship with my own father; thankfully, my mother was more parent than anyone could have asked for and more than I deserved at times. She made sure the males in my life were the examples I needed them to be. Three of my great uncles stepped into that role, but I always had a special place in my heart for Uncle Keith. He was kind, funny and overflowing with integrity. He spent almost 65 years married to my Aunty Nancy. They were my other example of enduring love. He was a sensational storyteller, a trait that came from that side of the family. He was a mechanic by trade, a qualification he got by mail, as you did in the 1940s. He once told me that you wouldn't have been much of a farmhand if you couldn't fix things yourself, and you'd be waiting a while if someone else had to do it. He qualified in record time and
got top marks on his exams. Only missing a perfect score by half a point. The man could fix anything he put his hands on. He also played a mean harmonica. He gave one to the kid when she was three and would occasionally wake up to what sounded like an Alabama prison cell in her room, and it always made me smile. Both these men lived a life of service. Jack's dedication to the game he loved continued, and he changed the pipeline of how young people, young women particularly, make their way into the sport. My Uncle spent years as president of the Lions Club, and for years he and my Aunty delivered meals on wheels to people in their small hometown, often people years younger than themselves. He was big on letting those he loved make their own decisions, but he was always the soft place to fall and the person you would seek out first for advice. Of course, the most important thing to both these remarkable men was family. The world felt a little bit darker this Good Friday morning, and why wouldn't it? Two giant personalities likely eclipsed the sun on the way to their final destination. How lucky I was to have shared part of their time on earth.

What is YOUR Risk Profile? Apparently, this aircraft had been flown as part of the training program when on one occasion, one of the student aviators had a midair ‘incident’ in the plane. The plane didn’t crash, and no one was hurt, with the exception of the aircraft. However, the mid-air incident resulted in a manoeuvre that stressed the airframe to 5.98G. So, what’s the big deal? The airframe is rated to 6G. The plane had gone so close to its physical limits that none of the engineers would sign off on the aircraft being safe to fly again.

DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
I have a very good friend who was in the armed services. On a visit to an airbase, he noticed one of the trainer aircraft sitting in the corner of a giant hangar. He asked, “What’s wrong with that one?” The response was interesting …
So, what has this got to do with teeth? It’s about risk. I frequently consult with people who have lost teeth, have difficult bites, or have a back to the wall dentally in some shape or form. I feel for many of these people, and often, their restorative options may also be limited by the anatomical or physiologic circumstances surrounding the problem. So what can we do? Determine the patient’s risk profile. Whatever the patient decides in these kinds of difficult circumstances, they will almost inevitably be going out on some form of a limb. Our job as dentists is to develop solutions that are simple but creative and then put forth these options, clearly stating what the risks are and which options carry the highest risk. Almost always, the patient knows what is best for them. It’s a classic case of the patient knowing themselves better than we know them – let them decide. One last factor: “if everything fell apart – how far would the patient fall?” When discussing these kinds of (or any) treatment options – I always have a back-stop: a fall-back position that I can guide the patient to in the worst-case scenario… and I talk with the patient about it before treatment.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
2
Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)
3
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

Ageing is something we all have to experience. It brings challenges - mental and physical. While we are used to thinking of this as a process that begins in middle age, in fact, skin ageing starts much sooner. Often people will be aware of more lines on their faces or redness or pigmentation in their twenties. This is especially noticeable in Australia, where the effects of the sun from childhood breaks down collagen and elastin
faster than in less sunny countries. Of course, some facial lines and wrinkles are completely normal and seen even in small children. A concern in Western society is that some people in their twenties are becoming so obsessed with unrealistic "filtered" faces that they lose perspective and forget what normal, natural faces look like. You can be proactive from when you are younger by utilising some of the effective treatments or home care products that focus on improving skin quality and boosting the repair of UV damage for naturally glowing skin. This is really worth it - future-proofing your skin with results-driven skincare while protecting and embracing your individual appearance. At the same time, it's never too late to start regenerating older, more damaged skin. Get professional advice from an ethical skin specialist. Don't try and look like a clone of the strangely famous, but hold on to what is uniquely you.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle 2040 reflected the community's values and vision for Newcastle and will guide City of Newcastle's planning, projects and policies in future years. with an engagement program, which met people where they were through outreach at events, schools and community facilities in addition to surveys," Cr Nelmes said. "We were committed to ensuring a true representation of our community was reflected through consultation by listening to people from all stages and walks of life regarding their ideas and priorities for our city's future. "Although Newcastle is already incredible, we must continue to plan and implement actions to maintain the city's liveability while managing population growth, providing opportunities for economic development and diversification and making Newcastle a place for all as we become a global city." Community collaboration undertaken to inform Newcastle's updated vision included thousands of interactions such as face-to-face conversations, workshops, surveys, online feedback, advisory committees and stakeholder engagement. Priorities and objectives set out in Newcastle 2040 focus on four key themes, including Liveable Newcastle, Sustainable Newcastle, Creative Newcastle and Achieving Together. A commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture, our planet, inclusion, supporting local, innovation, and social justice principles underpin Newcastle 2040 and informs the actions City of Newcastle undertakes. To view the city's shared vision for the future, Newcastle 2040, visit www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au EARLY WORKS TO COMMENCE UNDERNEATH NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY AHEAD OF EXPANSION Crucial mine remediation work will soon commence beneath the Newcastle Art Gallery to prepare for the $40 million expansion of one of the city's most loved cultural assets. "An interesting and little-known fact about Newcastle Art Gallery is that it sits atop abandoned mine workings, so we must ensure the site is safe for construction of the expanded gallery to commence later this year," Cr Nelmes said. "The mine remediation is a significant step forward to prepare the site, while work continues inside the gallery to decant and prepare the extensive collection for offsite storage." The work will target the Borehole Coal Seam, which sits around 75 metres below ground level, and Dudley Coal Seam, around 27 metres below ground. The remediation is scheduled to commence in June. It will require approximately 15,000

cubic metres of grout deployed into the seams through over 100 individual bores, which will be drilled throughout the site. With the Gallery's collection currently being decanted, a temporary photography studio has been set up on-site, enabling the digitisation and condition reporting of the works of art before being placed into offsite storage. The community can access the collection online during the Gallery's construction period, and outreach programs will commence within local schools this month. Other special activations include events in conjunction with New Annual to introduce local and national audiences to a new programming direction for Newcastle Art Gallery. A Gallery podcast is also due to be released later this year. Newcastle Art Gallery closed for expansion in January this year. The expansion project includes an additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space with dedicated areas for the Gallery's collection on the lower level, while the upper level will cater for a variety of travelling exhibitions, including international shows. The project will deliver a new café and retail shop, multi-purpose and educational program space, a secure international standard loading dock, and extend the building's footprint east along Darby Street and Queen
Street. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2024. The $40 million project has been supported by a $10 million grant from the Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments, a $10 million bequest from Valerie Ryan and $500,000 in funding from the Margaret Olley Art Trust through the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation. To stay up to date with behind the scenes content on the decanting process and collection highlights, visit the Newcastle Art Gallery Facebook page at www.facebook. com/NewcastleArtGalleryAustralia. (Continued) everyone, including creatives, academics and students, to use in their own backyard," Cr Fraser said. "Windale and surrounding suburbs are growing quickly, and facilities like this ensure we can keep up with community needs." The hub will sit near the Lake and South Street intersection and boast a library filled with lounge and study areas, a kid-friendly reading area and spaces for workshops and events. Other features include soundproof meeting rooms, office spaces, a commercial kitchen, outdoor sitting spaces and a new car park. The project is funded entirely through Council's development contributions and proceeds from the sale of Council land at Bennetts Green. The project is expected to be completed early next year. You can stay up to date with the project at lakemac.com.au/ Projects/Windale-Hub KIDS LAUNCH INTO LAKE MAC’S MILLIONDOLLAR LEARN-TO-SWIM CENTRE Charlestown Swim Centre’s $1.1 million learn to swim pool has officially opened, offering a firstclass indoor facility providing children further opportunities to learn vital swimming skills year-round.
Lake Macquarie Council Swim Centre Team Leader Christopher Wilson said it was the first purpose-built teaching facility operated by Council. “Every parent should have peace of mind that their child will be safe in and around the water. This indoor facility has allowed us to expand our learn-to-swim program, ensuring more families have access to classes,” Mr Wilson said. With a depth ranging from 60 centimetres to one metre, the heated pool provides young swimmers with a comfortable, modern environment in which to learn.
Children from six months of age upwards can book into classes Monday to Saturday. With up to six classes able to run simultaneously in the 16m pool, it has enabled more children to participate in the learn to swim program Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said it was critical children have basic swimming and water safety skills at an early age and that dedicated learn to swim centres are also proposed for West Wallsend, Speers Point and Swansea in Council’s Draft Aquatic Facilities Strategy. An Autumn Sanctuary TO REFLECT YOUR PERSONALITY
At OZ Design If you love to decorate for the season, you’ll be pleased to know you can easily create your ideal Autumn sanctuary by injecting personality into your home with artwork, rugs, and statement pieces. This season is all about balance within your home décor, including choosing the right textures and colours to seamlessly transition your look alongside the changing weather. So this month, we asked the 46
• HUNTER HOMES & LIFESTYLE
team at OZ Design to share their tips and tricks for styling homewares in your space to create the biggest impact and boost the aesthetic of your overall interior (all items can be seen in the image)…. The easiest way to accessorise your space is by adding a bold centrepiece to your dining table. Whether you choose an assortment of vases, sculptures, fruit bowls or candles, the
possibilities are endless! At OZ Design, we love the look of our oversized Sia ceramic vases holding gorgeous, lush greenery to bring the outside in. This pop of colour creates the perfect contrast between the stark white of our Flinders round dining table and provides a sense of serenity by adding a natural element to the room. By simply choosing the right materials to balance your space, you can transform a dull look into a warm and inviting atmosphere for your family and guests to all enjoy. When it comes to choosing the right rug for your space, consider all the possible patterns and colours. Paired with neutral flooring, don’t be afraid to take some risks with your selection by considering floral designs, classic Persian-style rugs or a distinct geometric pattern like the one we’ve used here. The right rug radiates luxury and can add softness and texture to your space, which makes it such an important piece in your home décor to ultimately ground your style. Switching out your rug can transform your room from summer to winter by using visual texture to cut through the hard surfaces of floorboards or tiles. In some cases with open plan homes, an oversized rug also has the ability to segregate areas such as the living and dining room spaces, making it an extremely useful piece when it comes to interior decorating. For the finishing touches, accessorise your walls in style with gorgeous artwork. Choose art pieces that spark joy and are a reflection of your personal style to complement the space seamlessly. Wall art catches your line of sight first when entering a room, so a rule of thumb is to set your framed prints at eye level or lean the piece against the wall for a more relaxed look. Between canvas or glass, portrait or landscape, and synthetic or natural frame, there is an abundance of options when searching for the right piece for your home. Be confident and mix various types of prints to create dimension and interest, using them to either complement your existing style or introduce a loud statement into your space. This season we are inspired by coastal landscapes and foreign destinations – dare we say we are holiday dreaming. Head to your local store or shop online to discover our huge collection of homewares ready for you to indulge in at OZ Design Furniture.

Winter is almost here, and although temperatures have yet to hit rock bottom, it does not mean that we need to freeze until they do. Jetmaster Newcastle is well known for its extensive range of fireplace products and has been providing Newcastle and its surrounding regions with the highest quality fireplace products for over ten years. Their showroom at Adamstown is continuously updated and hosts the region's premier display of gas and log-burning fireplaces. Whether you're looking to add a fireplace that oozes contemporary style or perhaps a period fireplace to suit the heritage of your home, you're sure to find exactly what you are looking for at the Adamstown display centre. Designers increasingly include fireplaces in interior designs, and Robin Hastings, the owner of Jetmaster Newcastle, says that they are seeing a real trend toward homeowners returning to having a fireplace as a central feature of their living environment. "At Jetmaster, we offer both gas and log burning fires. Our gas range is perfect for those who prefer the cleanliness of gas and convenience of touch button, while our log burning fires are for those who love the beautiful natural heat and effect that only a log burning fire can provide," says Robin. "In our showroom, customers can view the Heat & Glo range of balanced flue gas fires. This range is available in many configurations. In addition to the health benefits of the sealed unit and flue system, the design allows for flexibility in installation and location within your home. There are not many places you can't fit a Heat & Glo gas fire. The range-topping Mezzo Series from Heat & Glo is certainly a favourite with architects and in some of the finest homes in Newcastle," he said. "We also have our range of contemporary Horizon and traditional Jetmaster naturally drafted (open) gas fires. These fires are aesthetically stunning and provide brilliant, radiant heat, reliability of operation and a myriad of accessories to achieve just the look you're after." For those who love a real wood fire (and who doesn't), you will find that Jetmaster Newcastle has you covered there too! For more information, visit the showroom at 334 Brunker Rd, Adamstown or online at www.jetmasternewcastle.com.au.
