ART P07 FILM P10 KIDS P15 MUSIC P18 SPECIALS P30
Inside issue 191 – ART (P07) You can see a show called ShiftEd at IMAG, plus there’s more from FLOW—this time Abstracting 57º35’01.9N by Mark Osbourne, and also at Eden Court, Innocence by Sherie Beazley. | FILM (P10) In our humble, your best bet for a decent newie might be on Margot Robbie’s newie, Terminal, or the star-packed Hotel Artemis—but we expect more seats will be warmed by the likes of the increasingly sequelous Incredibles 2, Mamma Mia 2, Transylvania 3 and Mission Impossible 6! | KIDS (P15) Can it be true? Our fave cartoon pre-bacon porker, Peppa Pig’s Adventure rolls into town—and there’s two EC Creative shows too… | MUSIC (P18) The Bught will ring to the sound of chart hits from Little Mix, less poppy fare is also on offer from the likes of Aidan Moffat & FM Hubbert. Peatbog Faeries, DJ Marika Rossa and Ruby Rendall. | SPECIALS (P30) You know it’s summer when you start to read about the annual Inverness Gala Night, and its accompanying Inverness Highland Games—that most venerable of traditional events returning to Bught Park. You’ll also want to know about the Moscow State Circus at Caley Thistle (ps, win tix on p22). | SPORT (P33) Aside from the many many Highland Games on offer, you’ll find a Highland Hike Challenge the Ft William Marathon. | THEATRE (P35) Whovians will have their Tardises in a twist at the compelling Who, Me fan show, whilst fans of a more feathery variety will be on show with the Ladyboys Of Bangkok (win tix p22). This Is Elvis is a musical drama based on the ‘King’s comeback (earlybird tix offer p03) and you can also catch a Pirates of Penzance, a youth-orientated NTS Exchange, and two outdoor productions at Logie Steading. | BACK END (P40) It’s the High Tea Crowd...

Popsters Little Mix might be stealing the headlines this month but overall July has a really Big Mix on offer. You’ve got Ladyboys and Highland Games and Peppa Pig and Incredibles and Elvis and Marika Rossa and Wheelbarrow Racing and Dr Who, a Strongest Man & Strongest Woman competition, Mamma Mia 2 and Pirates of Penzance and a Mission Impossible and a Circus. Sheesh. You’ll probably forget what home looks like… Pack a brolly though, eh.

ART Picture This. With news this month that the architectural carbuncle that is Bridge St might not be too long for this world, let’s hope that IMAG escapes any collateral damage— or better still is given the surroundings its fine collections deserve. And when you go there be sure to check out the art which often includes some excellent work. This month it’s an exhibition called SHIFTED in the Foyer Craft Gallery until 21 JUL, bringing together a group of five Highlands & Islands designer makers with four collaborators from Iceland. It’s a two-year long project which supports these designers to share ideas, techniques and skills and provides opportunities to explore each other’s’ environments and challenges. Always worth checking out the art at EDEN COURT too. The Stall Gallery this month showcases Innocence [1] by SHERIE BEAZLEY, a series of photos celebrating the state of its title, while the excellent Flow Photographic Gallery features MARK OSBOURNE’s Abstracting 57º35’01.9N [2], an exploration of time, space, light and form. Founding director of Flow, PAUL CAMPBELL has a show of his 1 own at UPSTAIRS GALLERY from 02–27 JUL. Plane Spotting [3] sees his photos of aircraft in the sky investing shots of contrails with not only a certain abstract beauty, but also making us wonder about the stories behind the journeys and the transient nature of flight.

Changing Seasons… Typically, the fact that it is now, in fact, actual proper summer would mean time for actual proper blockbusters—but that notion of coinciding ‘blockbuster season’ and summer holidays is feeling somewhat archaic in a year where the unquestionable event film of the year so far—Black Panther—arrived in Feb and we’ve had a steady drip feed of superheroes and Star Wars since May. Nonetheless, July is still a home for a few big-budget tentpoles—and where those words go, DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON usually follows; this month the future president battles terrorists in a Hong Kong highrise in SKYSCRAPER [1] (Vue 13 Jul), the kind of domain once dominated by TOM CRUISE, who stars in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE–FALLOUT [2] (Vue 26). CHRIS MCQUARRIE, director of the charming/sprightly previous instalment is back, as are that film’s scene-stealers REBECCA FERGUSON and SEAN HARRIS, alongside VING RHAMES and SIMON PEGG, while HENRY CAVILL, VANESSA KIRBY and ANGELA BASSET join. MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN! [3] (Vue & EC 20), sequel to the decade-ago sleeper hit hopes to repeat that trick. Split between present day—with AMANDA SEYFRIED, MERYL STREEP, et al—and flashbacks following LILY JAMES as a younger version of Streep’s Donna. But, be honest, its the tunes and locations you’re going for—and to see if PIERCE BROSNAN’S singing has improved any (spoiler: it has not). Kids hols means cartoons—there’s 3 with quite obvious attractions, those being THE INCREDIBLES 2 [4] (Vue & EC 08), HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 [5] (Vue 27) and THOMAS & FRIENDS [6] (Vue 20) (see listings for full titles). The most promising animation this month, however, is THE BREADWINNER [7] (EC 02–05), a gorgeously hand-drawn, Oscar-nominated tale of a girl’s coming-of-age in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Be brave. And old-schoolers, look out for The Beatles’ YELLOW SUBMARINE [8] (Vue & EC 08) 50th celebration. The kind of old-fashioned genre film that used to rule the summer is out in abundance too. Principally, there’s two stylish crime tales in HOTEL ARTEMIS [9] (Vue 20) and TERMINAL [10] (Vue 06). The former brings together an impressive cast—JODIE FOSTER, STERLING K. BROWN, Atlanta’s BRIAN TYREE HENRY, SOFIA BOUTELLA, DAVE BAUTISTA, ZACHARY QUINTO and JEFF GOLDBLUM—for a near-future LA thriller that looks like John Wick meets Straw Dogs. The latter sees MARGOT ROBBIE joined by SIMON PEGG, DEXTER FLETCHER and MIKE MYERS (!) in a highly stylised revenge neo-noir with shades of Ritchie and Refn. Neither looks terribly groundbreaking, but they should provide enjoyable pulp thrills. The depressingly prescient Purge franchise, meanwhile, gets a prequel in the literally-titled THE FIRST PURGE [11] (Vue 06), while ESCAPE PLAN 2: HADES [12] (Vue 20) keeps Stallone but trades Arnie for DAVE BAUTISTA. If it’s laughs you want, there’s PAUL RUDD and STEVE COOGAN as a couple dealing with the arrival of the latter’s young son in the sweetly earnest IDEAL HOME [13] (Vue 06 JUL), and ED HELMS, JON HAMM, RASHIDA JONES, JEREMY RENNER and Get Out’s LIL REL HOWERY playing a cross-country game of tag in, uhh, TAG [14] (Vue 06). There’s several Brit heartwarmers on offer, too. SWIMMING WITH MEN [15] (EC 13–19) stars ROB BRYDON as an accountant given a new lease of life by joining a men’s synchronised swimming team in a heartfelt comedy-drama, whilst ZOO (EC 06–12) is a wartime coming-ofage drama with ART PARKINSON, PENELOPE WILTON, and TOBY JONES. Brit/Spanish film, THE BOOKSHOP [16] (EC 06–12), stars EMILY MORTIMER as a widow shop owner in 1950s Suffolk. Support comes from the dependably-great PATRICIA CLARKSON and BILL NIGHY. Indie and art-house releases are also out there, the most exciting being LEAVE NO TRACE (EC 27 Jul–02 Aug)—the brilliant DEBRA GRANIK’s first feature since the superb Winter’s Bone—a poignant father-daughter drama starring the ever-excellent BEN FOSTER and a breakout performance from THOMASIN MACKENZIE. ENTEBBE [17] (EC 05-06)
11
^Last Month’s Releases This Month
dramatizes the ‘76 hijacking, with ROSAMUND PIKE, DANIEL BRUHL and EDDIE MARSAN starring. Appreciators of the off-piste are also advised to check out the live broadcast of EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAIMIE [18] (EC 05 JUL), the acclaimed musical about a teenage drag queen. Eden Court also has a pair of worthwhile documentaries, in the form of THE RAPE OF RECY TAYLOR (EC 08/09 JUL), a devastating, powerful chronicle of the titular crime and its oft-overlooked role in the Civil Rights movement, and TIME TRIAL [19] (EC 06–12 JUL), a study of David Miller, the only British cyclist to win every Tour de France jersey. Also at Eden Court, a season of worth: REVOLT, SHE SAID: WOMEN AND FILM AFTER ‘68 (07 JUL–18 AUG), a timely examination of female rebellion in late twentieth-century cinema, offering an array of overlooked gems by and about women from around the world. Among the films shown are VERA CHYTILOVA’s Czech New Wave comedy-drama DAISIES [20], the great AGNES VARDA’s exploration of two women involved in the 1970s French women’s movement ONE SINGS, THE OTHER DOESN’T, LAURA MULVEY and PETER WOLLEN’s subversive, disorienting THE RIDDLES OF THE SPHINX, BEEBAN KIDRON’s documentary on the 80s women’s peace camp, CARRY GREENHAM HOME, and Swedish actress/ director MAI ZETTERLING’s reimagining of Lysisastra, THE GIRLS—along with a plethora of other features and shorts. Looks to be essential and fascinating viewing, and a chance to give some often overlooked masterpieces their due.

Mixing It Up Four girls with four albums and four no.1 singles—LITTLE MIX [1] have come a deal further than most X-Factor winners since 2011. Truth be told, we’re not entirely sure that we could bring to mind any specific titles of their many hits, such is the ephemeral nature of 21st century pop stardom, but there’s no denying the group’s success and wide appeal—so expect a feverishly excited crowd when the gals play BUGHT PARK on 29 JUL. And a cavalcade of summery sounds is pretty much guaranteed. Sublime songs for a slightly older generation will be the order of the evening when AIDEN MOFFAT & FM HUBBERT [2] come to MAD HATTERS on 01 JUL. In a world where fey, aimless songwriting gets undue praise, the duo’s indie folk, particularly on their new album Here Lies The Body, reminds us that there are still people capable of genuine excellence. The appeal of PEATBOG FAERIES [3], who play UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN on 04 JUL is rather more visceral, the Skye band taking traditional sounds as merely the starting point for a knees-up that incorporates not only old-time jigs and reels, but also jazz, hip hop, reggae and more. A couple of club nights at IRONWORKS this month are worth noting. On 07 JUL, Ukrainian DJ/clothes designer/renaissance woman MARIKA ROSSA [4] brings her thrilling techno to town, demonstrating why she’s in such demand at festivals all over the world. Then on 14 JUL, having had to cancel this year at short notice, we finally get to see Peep Show’s SUPER HANS, aka MATT KING, who’ll be taking no prisoners in his uncompromising pursuit of hedonist thrills. Get along if you think you can keep up with him. Over at EDEN COURT, there are some intriguing attractions on offer, notably a double bill of Scottish duo DOGHOUSE ROSES [5] and Philadelphia native JOSEPH PARSONS on 21 JUL. Having met a couple of years back in a Berlin bar, they discovered a shared love of rootsy blues and contemporary storytelling, common threads that are bound to run through what should be a fine couple of performances.

A more conventional, though no less enjoyable take on American music comes at EDEN COURT on 22 JUL, when RUBY RENDALL draws on the spirit of the likes of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Lynn Anderson to showcase her new album Once Upon A Time. Support comes from Aberdonian country singer ARLENE G. TOOTH & CLAW’s interesting gigs across a wide range of genres continue on 14 JUL in the form of Nairn’s Jemma Tweedie, the former folkster re-invented as sultry pop diva LILURA [6]. Everything looks & sounds very slick and pointed at the big time (inc recent trips to London and LA), and she’s recently dropped new single “Feel Love”. Should be good... The INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES revives music in the GATHERING TENT this year—running from 6–10pm, with various offerings from a Polish disco and band, PA-DA, and some local talent curated by Chris Lemon of Inverness Gigs—including ANNAKII, BAD ACTRESS [7], PARK CIRCUS images 7/8 courtesy Roddy McKenzie and TABLE FOR FOUR [8] (more p27-29).

THE INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES
Saturday 21 July sees BUGHT PARK host the North of Scotland’s biggest Highland Gathering of the year—since 1822 this event has drawn the great and the good from Inverness as well as the far flung corners of the globe— come and find out why. We have lots to entertain you with all day—from our
legendary World Class Heavies to our Track & Field Athletics programme to our Mass Highland Fling and the staggering Inverness Stone Challenge. You’ll also find Scotland’s biggest Inter Clan Gathering, hugely impressive Pipes & Drums, our Traders & Exhibitors Village and the Exclusively Highlands Craft Fair—plus the usual huge Fun Fair and attractions. New for this year, we’re pleased to welcome The Show & Shine Inverness Car Show—bringing together modified vehicles from all over Scotland, with awards to be won for Best Exteriors and Interiors, Best Engine Bay, Best Classic, Best of Show and more. Come and see these gleaming, roaring beauties up close. Also new for this year is music in The Gathering Tent— running from 6pm until 10pm. The show is being hosted by community group Polska Wilki—and we are delighted to have the first Polish Gathering as part of our Games Day celebrations and we hope it will be the start of an annual tradition. Polish band, Pa-Da, will perform and there will be a Polish Disco. Inverness Gigs have curated the other local acts—Bad Actress (five-piece Hard Rock & Blues with a touch of Glam); Table for Four (songs of love, loss and more from the heart—with great tunes); and Park Circus (four piece indie rock band who’s Ironworks debut impressed); and Annakii (feat. superbly talented vocalist Anna McWhirter).

SPECIALS Fun and Games… Back in gentler, more innocent times, the INVERNESS GALA was for many the social highlight of the summer, giving the whole (then) town the chance to socialise and enjoy themselves. Things may be very different these days, but the Gala remains, now as part of a two-day bonanza that also includes the INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES. It kicks off on FRI 20 JUL, proceedings having been relocated from Bught Park to the city centre with the INVERNESS WHEELBARROW GRAND PRIX in Inverness High Street at 6pm (organised by Inverness Culloden Rotary Club) and performances by the CITY OF INVERNESS PIPE BAND and the ELIZABETH FRASER SCHOOL OF HIGHLAND DANCE. At 7pm everybody can follow the band to Northern Meeting Park to welcome the competitors for the 2018 HIGHLANDS STRONGEST MAN & STRONGEST WOMAN Competition. Next day, SAT 21 JUL, it’s over to BUGHT PARK, the current venue for the INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES, an event that started way back in 1822 and which remains one of the largest in the country. The show opens at noon with a spectacular ceremony which will include a MASS HIGHLAND FLING and then the next six hours are packed with displays by massed pipe bands, solo piping and a full programme of track and field and Heavy Events and Highland Dancing Competitions. There’s also Scotland’s biggest inter clan gathering in the CLAN VILLAGE, plus the famous CRAFT FAIR and TRADING VILLAGE, live music and—making its debut— the INVERNESS SHOW AND SHINE CAR SHOW which will bring together modified vehicles from all over Scotland in the outer field where you’ll get the chance to enjoy some of the most amazing and creative pieces of bodywork. Prizes are up for grabs for categories such as Best Engine Bay, Interior, Exterior, Wheels, plus Best Classic and the prestigious Best of Show, which promises “the Ultimate Street Car, with a perfect blend of attitude, sounds and looks, all done to the highest standard”. While Highland Games all over the country will never be as popular as they were fifty or a hundred years ago, the Inverness edition remains one of the most popular for tourists and locals alike and broadening the appeal in these ways might be the key to future success. Admission to the Strongman Show is £5 for adults and £3 for concessions - but if you buy your tickets for the Inverness Highland Games at the Box Office—you will be able to see the Strongman Show absolutely free. The day after the Highland Games, on SUN 22 JUL, there’s a rather more sedate event, the HIGHLAND GARDEN FEST at INVERNESS BOTANIC GARDENS. As we go to press precise details of what is billed as “a celebration of everything for the garden” are still being finalised, but we do know it’s on from 11am–4pm and admission is free. Head to highlandgardenfest.co.uk to find out more.

And finally, the estimable MOSCOW STATE CIRCUS come to BUGHT PARK from 12–17 JUL with the latest generation of performers from one of the world’s longest running entourages. Find details of how to win a family ticket on p22. More SPECIALS features and events at: whatsonhighlands.com

Cabers Ahoy! This is the time of year when some of the country’s more archaic sports get displayed to a wider audience and so, while the Highland Games still have their fair share of track events (though with little prospect of the next Olympian being discovered à la Chariots Of Fire), the real attention is on caber tossing, hammer slinging and the lifting of unfeasible heavy weights. All of the above will be on show at the INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES on 21 JUL, and at the INVERNESS GALA the previous evening (20 JUL), don’t miss the prestigious HIGHLANDS STRONGEST MAN & WOMAN challenge [1] (more on both events on p31). And if you can’t make it to the city there are plenty of smaller Highland Games taking place throughout the region, notably in GAIRLOCH (30 JUN), TAIN (14 JUL), TOMINTOUL (21 JUL), ARISAIG (25 JUL), DURNESS (27 JUL), STRATHCONAN (28 JUL) and DORNOCH (03 AUG). Healthy exertion of a different kind at the HIGHLAND HIKE CHALLENGE from 06–07 JUL, a 100km endurance challenge in teams or as an individual, walking a scenic route from the Highland capital to the west coast of Scotland. There are also 50km and 25km options. Whichever option you choose it’s a physically gruelling affair and no to be undertaken lightly, but we imagine massively satisfying to complete. For more info see outpostcharity.org/highland-hike After something like that, the FORT WILLIAM MARATHON on 29 JUL sounds like a bit of a doddle, even if that’s obviously not the case. Whatever, it’s another of the many endurance runs here that provides some of the most beautiful scenery on earth as a backdrop to a load of athletes treating a stitch as a minor inconvenience.

THEATRE Guess Who? Some top-notch entertainment at EDEN COURT this month, those of us who are fans of a certain twohearted Time Lord being particularly excited about WHO, ME on 08 JUL. It’s something of a labour of love with comedian ROB LLOYD investigating whether Doctor Who (the television show) is guilty of inciting in him a debilitating obsession, or whether it has shaped him into a well-rounded, mentally-sound member of society. The latter we trust, though we might be biased. And though it takes in the Doctor’s 54 years, 13 faces and countless adventures, it’s not just for hardcore fans, examining as it does the nature of obsession.
Spectacle of quite a different kind with the return of the LADYBOYS OF BANGKOK (EC, 30 & 31 JUL). Always popular when they wiggle their way to the Highlands, their mix of cabaret, comedy and glittery glamour is billed this time round as the Wonder Women Tour (celebrating their 20th anniversary!) and promises their unique homages to the likes of Cher, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Diana Ross, Pink, Shirley Bassey, Wonder Woman herself and even Mary Poppins! …And There’s More Plenty of people are obsessed with Elvis Presley and his popularity shows no sign of abating even four decades after his death. So a full house is guaranteed for THIS IS ELVIS [1] (EC, 17–21 JUL) where STEVE MICHAELS stars in a musical based on Philip Norman’s book about Presley’s seminal Comeback Special show in 1968, arguably the finest moment of his entire career. The night recreates all the drama leading up to the comeback as well as staging the monumental concert., fast-forwarding to an equally iconic moment, Elvis’ Vegas debut. Many of Presley greatest hits are promised, including Trouble, Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, All Shook Up, Suspicious Minds and many more. That’s not all, with EDEN COURT also giving us a production of the much-loved PIRATES OF PENZANCE on 14 JUL, while although there doesn’t seem to be as much outdoor theatre as usual this summer, you can still get to experience it at LOGIE STEADING, where they’re putting on THE MERCHANT OF VENICE on 05 JUL and THE ADVENTURES OF DOCTOR DOLITTLE on 12 JUL. This month also sees the return of the admirable NTS EXCHANGE [2] programme at EDEN COURT, National Theatre of Scotland’s vibrant biennial festival for 16–25 yr olds, now in its ninth year. New productions from ten different Young Companies come to Eden Court to form the Exchange Festival—a week-long celebration of performance and creative learning. Supported by the NTS, each company has been given access to leading creative artists, encouraged to take risks, explore new approaches and create a piece of theatre that tells us about their lives and the world in which they live. By day, the 100+ participants from the ten companies will take part in a range of masterclasses, workshops, discussions and all broadcast via Exchange TV. By night, their focus shifts to entertaining you. And by the end of the week, they’ll have developed their theatre skills, exchanged ideas and made new friends. Ready to become the next generation of theatre innovators and instigators.

The first five months of 2018 have been markedly slow for the property market in the Highlands, with the number of houses coming onto the market being down on previous years. This has been the case for all estate agencies in the Highlands, and in most other areas across the rest of Scotland as well. The good news for HSPC is that we have grown our market share in this tough climate, and we currently represent 51% of sales being made through Highland estate agents.
