Yule love this issue—so jam packed with goodies is it that we should have tied a red bow around it and placed it lovingly under your Douglas Fir (or whatever your conifer of choice might be) and sung ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ in harmonious tones. If we had waited to make a pressie of it of course, then you’d probably miss all the great events contained within these pages, so we decided to just leave it to our lovely postal service to bring it to you in good time for making your festive entertainment plans. You are, as always, welcome. Happy Christmas, everyone.

ART The Shape of Water… UISGE-AQUA [1], at the UPSTAIRS GALLERY until 04 JAN is a creative project by Artist ALESSANDRA 1 CAMPOLI about watery dreamscapes-landscapes in the Scottish Highlands. The subtitle—If You Stare at Me in the Light I will Melt into a Puddle—refers to the legend of Asharys, translucent nocturnal water creatures that were believed to melt if exposed to sunlight. Combining research into local folktales and old legends about mythical creatures living in seas, lochs and rivers with alternative photographic techniques, digital collages and site-specific installations, Uisge-Aqua aims at being a creative and visual exploration of the Scottish waterscapes and their mythical heritage.

The art at EDEN COURT is always worth checking out and this month is no exception with a show running throughout December from SPEY ART GROUP. Going under the banner ARTISTIC DIVERSITY it brings together two Strathspey Art Group artists, RONA SMITH who employs a variety of skills and techniques (mixed media , painted silk printing and stitched textiles) to convey her fascination with local plants and animals, along with STEWART POTTER [2] who specialises in Scottish landscapes painted in vibrant oils and watercolours.

The excellent LAUNDRY GALLERY has a December show from KAREN BEATTIE, an artist practising in Ullapool, but who graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in Western Canada in 2013. Her work addresses what it feels like to live now, amidst the excesses of 21st Century consumption, information and misinformation. The gallery is exhibiting three large scale paintings on canvas as well as a series of small coloured pencil drawings.

Digging For Treasure… As usual at holiday time, you have your big studio ‘pop’ releases glinting brightly with shiny posters, adverts and trailers—but in our opinion, on this occasion, the most rewarding gifts under the cinematic Xmas tree are the smaller, unassumingly wrapped presents hidden in the gaps between… NEW RELEASES Here they are then, the big, ‘foil-paper-wrapped’, offerings—that seem to promise much but ultimately you find didn’t come with batteries, or were just not that much fun. DC continue their series of ‘hope this is as good as a Marvel film’ titles with AQUAMAN [1] (Vue 14) in which JASON MOMOA is the titular hero— good if you like rippling muscles and chiselled good looks, perhaps not so if you’re longing for personality or quality acting. James ‘Saw’ Wan directs, AMBER HEARD, NICOLE KIDMAN, WILLEM DAFOE and others offer support. Philip Reeve’s hugely popular futuristic steampunk saga, MORTAL ENGINES [2] (Vue 14), comes to the big screen with some talent (HUGO WEAVING, HERA HILMAR, ROBERT SHEEHAN), much anticipation and a trailer that doesn’t promise more than the disappointing Golden Compass treatment. However, that’s just the trailer, we can still hope... When we first heard MARY POPPINS RETURNS [3] (Vue & EC 21) was being made we groaned a little, then when we found that EMILY BLUNT was bringing the brolly, our spirits brightened somewhat—before a trailer brought our inital reservations to the fore again so we can’t raise a great deal of enthusiasm. But you never know—bring a spoonful of sugar though, just in case. Other major-ish releases might offer more joy—SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE [4] (Vue 14) is an animation but not the Saturday morning TV kind, this is nicely stylised and features the 2011 Marvel Comics afro-latino Miles Morales incarnation of Spidey. A different kind of animation in Transformers prequel spin-off, BUMBLEBEE [5] (Vue 26), giving a solo outing to the ‘yellow Herbie’ Chevvy Camaro-based autobot. Plus points for having Kubo & The Two Strings director, Travis Knight. After Benny Cumberbatch, Johnny Lee Miller and Robert Downey Jr’s recent iterations of Sherlock H., you might assume there’s little to be gained by introducing another take—but HOLMES AND WATSON [6] (Vue 26) is here nonetheless, ten years in the making and featuring the ought-to-be-entertaining pairing of WILL FERREL and JOHN C REILLY. Anyone’s guess... CHRISTMAS MOVIES Of course there will be festive fare on offer too—celebrating the 30th anniversary of its (July) release is the now-redefined-as-xmas-movie, DIE HARD [7] (Vue 05, EC 21/22), which is one of two CHRISTMAS CLASSICS screening at Eden Court, the other being the obligatory IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE [8] (21–24). Also on offer here—and offering wildly differing seasonal moods—are THE NUTCRACKER & THE FOUR REALMS [9] (EC) 08–13; the CBEEBIES CHRISTMAS SHOW: THUMBELINA (Vue & EC 15); the horribly animated (but nicely soundtracked) THE GRINCH (EC 21–27) and Scotland’s own xmas zombie musical, ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE [10] (EC 07–13) OTHER RECOMMENDED FILMS Once you’ve sifted through the ‘big presents’, try some of the less obvious treats provided: SHOPLIFTERS MANBIKI KAZOKU [11] (EC 07–13) is Kore-Eda Hirokazu’s affecting, Palm D’Or-winning, Japanese drama about a family who shoplift to survive; Lars Von Trier’s

13

^Last Month’s Releases This Month

opinion-dividing psych-horror, THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT [12] (Vue 14)—holding up an uncomfortable mirror, or celebrating a tired serial killer trope—you decide. Grant McPhee’s TEENAGE SUPERSTARS (EC 14–20) picks up the story after 2015’s Big Gold Dream—this time charting the evolution of the Glasgow music scene between ‘82 and ‘92, featuring The Pastels, BMX Bandits, The Soup Dragons, Teenage Fanclub, The Vaselines, The Jesus & Mary Chain, etc and labels Creation and 53rd & 3rd. Warm glows all round. Which is not what you’ll get from Luca Guadagnino’s lauded remake of 70s classic horror, SUSPIRIA [13] (EC 14–20). LIZZIE [13] (EC 14–20) stars Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart as axey Ms Borden and her close maid friend, Bridget, in a version of the tale seemingly based on Ed McBain’s novel of the same name. The book-ending premieres from the Inverness Film Festival return for their proper run—ROBERT REDFORD & SISSY SPACEK in THE OLD MAN & THE GUN [14] (EC 21–27) and Boots Riley’s awesome dark comedy SORRY TO BOTHER YOU [15] (EC 28–03 JAN). Do not miss. SEASONS As ever, EC also have some film seasons for you, a hugely varied range of five films bannered COMEDY GENIUS—inc 9 TO 5 (EC 08–12), COMING TO AMERICA (EC 23–27) and TOMPOPO (EC 29/30); the ANIM18 series features Scottish animation; and two classics, SOME LIKE IT HOT (EC 23/26) and THE APARTMENT (EC 28–31) comprise the NEW YEAR WITH BILLY WILDER season.

KIDS It’s Christmas! 3

2

1 Kids will be in a state of barely contained hysteria this month what with the EDEN COURT PANTO (see p35 for more) and the prospect of all those Xmas presents, so there shouldn’t be too much need to instil any extra festive spirit—but if any little ’uns still need a burst of excitement, take them along to the LITTLE ELVES’ CHRISTMAS PARTY! [1] at EC on SAT 01 and SUN 02 DEC for a jam-packed hour of singing, dancing, games and creative play for under 5’s and carers. Santa’s workshop is busy at this time of year, bring your ‘little elves’ to help out and let off some steam—wear red and green! Shows at 11am/12.30pm/2pm each day. That should warm them up nicely for the coming festivities—you can ramp them up a little further later in the month at LITTLE LAMP [2], also at EC, from 14–20 DEC. Lamp has something to say, something very important, a story that needs to be shared, but he can’t find the words and no-one seems to have time to listen. Eden Court Creative’s latest production, designed especially for under 5s, promises a magical festive adventure—and you can never have enough of those… They’ll also be keen to get along to WINTER WONDERLAND at WHIN PARK too. In what has now become a much-loved tradition the park will be transformed from 14–16 DEC as Santa arrives with his reindeer and mascot friends. Entry is free and no tickets are required. After that, the jolly bearded fella heads back to Toyland to make sure those elves aren’t slacking, before returning to the Highlands on SUN 23 DEC for the REINDEER TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION in Grantown on Spey (ending in carols and refreshments), then on CHRISTMAS EVE they’re VERY busy—with the SANTA & REINDEER PARADE in NEWTONMORE, the KINGUSSIE CHRISTMAS PARADE and the AVIEMORE CHRISTMAS PARADE, CAROLS & FIREWORKS [3], featuring Santa & his reindeer led by the Badenoch & Strathspey Pipe Band, followed by carols and fireworks at the Cairngorm Hotel—all prior to the business of flying round the world, squeezing down chimneys and doling out gifts…

Christmas at Eden Court It seems like only days ago when we were enjoying the summer sunshine but, since the clocks went back, the winter’s hurtled in and propelled us towards the festive season in the blink of an eye. With no cause to go outside until spring, it’s the time when indoor entertainments come into their own, particularly during the hectic holiday period. There are, of course, lots of musical shindigs at Hogmanay, which you can read about on p29, but before we topple into 2019, there are lots of Xmas treats coming our way, many of them, almost inevitably, at EDEN COURT. First up, on 08 DEC, it’s the SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA [1], always welcome visitors and this time celebrating THE COUNT & THE DUKE—the music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington—specifically by featuring those legends’ landmark albums, The Atomic Mr Basie and Ellington’s Black, Brown & Beige. It’s the first time in their 23 year history that SNJO have played these suites in full, so it’s something of a landmark occasion. The music of Orkney is brought to EC on 12 DEC courtesy of FARA [2], the folk quartet of JENNIFER AUSTIN, KRISTAN HARVEY, JEANA LESLIE and CATRIONA PRICE, their XMAS CONCERT utilising three fiddles and a piano to present a medley of Christmas music, some original songs and tunes with a festive twist. More folk excellence from the much-loved PHIL CUNNINGHAM who brings his CHRISTMAS SONGBOOK [3] to EC on 18 DEC, an evening featuring a rather impressive lineup. EDDI READER, KAREN MATHESON, JOHN MCCUSKER and Phil, will lead you through a great fun night of modern and traditional Christmas music, the show also featuring KRIS DREVER, IAN CARR and KEVIN MCGUIRE along with a special guest Brass Band. Special. There’s a lovely clip going round social media of MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES [4] playing the Cavern in Liverpool and joyously showing why long-time Highland resident Stephenson still possesses the ability to craft great songs that saw him first come to fame on Kitchenware Records all those years ago. His EC gig on 09 DEC should be a lot of fun. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the regular visit to Eden Court of BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETERS: HOLLY AT CHRISTMAS 2018 [5], the world’s best tribute to one of rock’n’roll’s most important and talented founding figures. This time they’re playing three nights from 13–15 DEC, promising Holly’s hits, other contemporary classics and some Christmas crackers. For something a little more tranquil, though equally guaranteed to fill you with Christmas cheer, SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE’s MUSICA ADVENTUS CONCERT BY CANDLELIGHT [6] at INVERNESS CATHEDRAL on 07 DEC should be rather special.

We joke. You can go out to celebrate—indeed you must—with a host of entertainments on offer, the biggest of all being the RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING in NORTHERN MEETING PARK ARENA. It’s pretty much the same each year, but that’s its strength, bringing folk together for a musical knees up, firework display and general sense of communal bonhomie as a new year unfurls. This year’s event, which expects to attract a crowd of 10,000 is again hosted by honorary Highlander CRAIG HILL with music from TIDE LINES [1], BLAZIN’ FIDDLES [2] (bringin their Award Winning Practice 20th anniversary year to a fine close) and Multiple CALUM MACKENZIE JONES & THE 2017 ! practice to have the prestigious TRAD PROJECT [3]. No tickets are required andOnly please note thatever youreceived can’t bring in “Best Private Practice” years in a row! food and drink, but it will be on sale in the park. An awesome night for forthree sure! That’s not the only Hogmanay option, two notable alternatives being BOGMANAY at BOGBAIN FARM (with a ceilidh then BLAZIN’ FIDDLES to take you through the bells) and RHYTHMNREEL’s HOGMANAY BASH at IRONWORKS. If you still haven’t sorted out your Xmas presents, there’s a great one-stop solution thanks to the CHRISTMAS ARTS, CRAFTS & FOODS FAIR at EDEN COURT from 07–09 DEC, showcasing loads of local artists, craftsfolk and produce.

Finally a heads up for a couple of interesting talks. On 10 DEC, STEPHEN VENABLES is at the HIGHLAND COUNCIL CHAMBER telling us all about UNCLIMBED SUMMITS IN ANTARCTICA, then on 12 DEC, HAMISH JOHNSTON from the Highland Family History Society will give a talk on his great great grandfather, the mineralogist and mountaineer MATTHEW FORSTER HEDDLE.

SPORT Festive Footy After the ridiculous stop-start rhythm to the early part of a football season constantly interrupted by stupid international breaks, we’re now getting down to business proper—starting with a flurry of pre and post Xmas fixtures. And for once, both our local teams have much to be optimistic about. INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE recently broke their own record for being unbeaten at home although far too many of those games ended in draws, so they’ll be looking to kick on with home fixtures against FALKIRK (01 DEC) and a resurgent DUNDEE UTD (15 DEC). ROSS COUNTY meanwhile are doing well under their new two-pronged management team of Stuart Kettlewell and Steven Ferguson (who’ve won Manager Of The Month awards twice in a row), while striker Billy McKay has found his scoring boots again. County have got a couple of winnable fixtures at home to QUEEN OF THE SOUTH (08 DEC) and PARTICK THISTLE (22 DEC), before the latest El Kessocko as ICT come to Dingwall on 29 DEC. In recent years not being in the same division has robbed us of this traditional post-Xmas fixture, so it’s good to have it back. And if the two meetings between the teams so far this season are anything to go by, it should be a corker. This is the time of the year when street scuffles are more prevalent than ever, but some of that excess testosterone is at least being channelled into something more disciplined at the ULTRA WHITE COLLAR BOXING event at INVERNESS ICE CENTRE on 15 DEC. There’s everything from standing tickets to VIP tables on offer, with a strict dress code. See tinyurl.com/whitecollarboxing for more. There’ll be plenty of eating and drinking in the weeks ahead, so you might feel better about your forthcoming indulgence if you make an effort at exercise. Fortunately there’s a good opportunity to do just that as well as raising money for a good cause with the DSUK AVIEMORE SANTA RUN on 15 DEC, in aid of Disability Snowsport and back for its eighth year. There’s a one mile fun run and a slightly longer 5K and it doesn’t matter if you run, jog, walk or are pushed—as long as you have fun! If you feel the need to run a bit more, there’s a LOSSIEMOUTH 10 MILE TURKEY TROT the next day, 16 DEC. And after that, you’ve got permission to stuff yourself with as much festive fare as you want…

Mirth, Mayhem & Magic Beans… Throughout 2018, the folk at EDEN COURT have brought us an extraordinary range of great drama, music, comedy, dance and film—but in terms of mass appeal, there’s only one show that matters this month and that’s the ANNUAL PANTO, something that’s a rite of passage for almost every kid in town and a traditional family outing that’s handed down the generations. Unlike some cities elsewhere, the Eden Court panto isn’t crammed with big-name celebrities, but it’s none the poorer for that, giving scripts Highland appeal, showcasing local talent and providing a month’s worth of amiably corny fun. No wonder it’s guaranteed to sell out every year.

This time round it’s JACK & THE BEANSTALK, running from 04 DEC–06 JAN, promising all the ingredients for a perfect family panto, with a dastardly villain, a hapless comic and a hilarious panto dame, as well as magnificent sets and costumes, fabulous songs and dances, bags of slapstick fun and ‘the most spectacular giant in pantoland’. The cast in this production from Imagine Theatre includes STEVEN WREN, ROSS ALLAN, MARJ HOGARTH and CHRIS O’MARA with a Junior Chorus drawn from local kids. It should, of course, be a hoot. While the Eden Court panto is the biggest in the area, there are several other opportunities to yell “behind you”, notably CINDERELLA, an Out Of The Darkness Theatre Company production in ELGIN from 13–15 DEC and NAIRN DRAMA CLUB’s panto in the town’s LITTLE THEATRE from 28 NOV–08 DEC. They’re not actually telling us what panto they’re doing yet, but their productions are invariably impressive, so we’re expecting good things. One panto that isn’t happening is that at FLORIANS THEATRE. We were rather looking forward to their take on ALI BABA & The 40 THIEVES, scheduled to run from 07 DEC, but it has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Fortunately a similar vibe is to be had from the DINGWALL PLAYERS CHRISTMAS PANTO, intriguingly titled THE LAST ARABIAN NIGHT, and on at DINGWALL ACADEMY AUDITORIUM from 13–15 DEC. Panto y’selves fitter!

Details from the Scout team: “The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers of Inverness will be out pounding the streets delivering Christmas post across Inverness, Smithton, Culloden, Balloch & Westhill once again this year. Now in its 23rd year, you can both support Scouting across Inverness, and post your Christmas cards for only 40p each (regardless of the size of the envelope!). Scout Post has developed from a small activity to become not only a major fundraiser, but an Inverness institution, and one which would not exist so successfully without the support we receive from HSPC, who are once again sponsoring our stamps. All cards are delivered by the young people, supported by their parents and our dedicated adult volunteers. With approx. 22,000 cards being delivered last year, Scout Post continues to

EATING OUT

Fortrose Café 67 High Street, Fortrose 01381 620 638 Funny old place Fortrose. A little town on the Moray Firth six miles north of Inverness, it’s visited these days mainly by tourists heading to Chanonry Point to see the dolphins showing off and the occasional glimpse of a whale, but it’s a place steeped in history. The ruined 13th century cathedral gives a hint of its importance in the Middle Ages, while it was allegedly the home of Scotland’s own Nostradamus, the Brahan Seer who, for his troubles ended up burnt in a barrel of tar at the aforementioned Chanonry Point. Presumably while Flipper and his pals messed about in the distance.

bustling, endearingly ramshackle place that draws locals and visitors alike, including, when we visit, a stream of kids from the nearby Fortrose Academy.

you can see why it’s picked up a host of awards, but the food on offer has also played a part in those accolades, particularly the cafe’s commitment to vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. There’s a warm, homely feel to the The breakfasts are talked about cafe, with half a dozen tables, a in superlatives, but with it being sofa next to a wood burning stove lunchtime when we visit, we decide and walls lined with a mixture of to explore some of the sun-overlocal art, playful slogans, photos the-yardarm options. of nearby wildlife and tourist information—friendly owners even In truth there aren’t exactly a handing us a folder of maps and welter of choices, with even the attractions. a tremendous Mushroom Soup, the main ingredient always at its best at this time of the year. It’s packed with flavour and the bread from the bakery next door is perfect for mopping up every last drop.

us a massive 35p out of pocket. Only a minor quibble and a problem that won’t arise when there are more than a couple of you, but something to take note of if you’re intending to visit.

For my main I have what’s described as a Boston Burger, which is basically a normal burger with mushrooms and onions on top. As with the bread, the meat comes from a local business, the butcher’s a few doors down from the café and while it’s not a patty to shout from the rooftops about, it’s perfectly fine. The stars of the plate—which also includes a creamy homemade slaw for those who are fans of such things—are the fab skinny fries, obviously prepared by hand and deliciously moreish. And there’s no skimping on portion size, so no-one’s going to leave hungry.

It’s difficult to bear a grudge though when the cakes are as delicious as this. My Millionaire’s Shortbread is nigh on perfect, with a crisp chocolate top, gooey caramel and melt-in-your mouth shortbread, a reminder that simple home baking when done well is far more appealing than the cackhanded attempts at reinventing the classics and bought-in massproduced fare we’ve occasionally been served elsewhere in the past.

My companion’s main is a Vegan Hot Dog, something that’s surely on not as many menus as it deserves to be, and even to this carnivore it certainly looks appealingly indistinguishable from the “real” thing. It gets a thumbs up for taste too, with nicely cooked onions on top and accompanying vegan coleslaw. It’s served with curly fries which he confesses he’s usually not a big fan of, but which turn out to be pretty good. His only gripe the fact that ketchup and other such condiments are served in sachets rather than proper bottles at the table, which doesn’t make for great dunkability.

There aren’t any puddings as such, rather a selection of home baked cakes and scones displayed behind glass on the counter. And it’s here that our only bone of contention arises. Not with the cakes themselves, but with paying for them. Because customers have to pay for desserts separately and each card transaction requires a £5 minimum spend, our two dessert choices require us to overpay to reach that figure, leaving

The scones, coconut tarts and flapjacks all look tempting too, but my pal eventually settles for a Peanut Crunch, a hefty slab packed with nuts that’s again obviously cooked to an old family recipe and all the better for it. It’s by no means the greatest lunch we’ve had in the past year, but it’s certainly one of the friendliest places and if you’re after some simple home-cooked food, particularly if you’re vegetarian or vegan, there’s much to like about Fortrose Café. And on a day like today when, bellies full, dinner can be walked off with a stroll down towards Chanonry Point to watch the autumn sun set over distant Kessock Bridge, it makes you think that perhaps all’s right with the world after all.
