ART P07 FILM P10 KIDS P14 MUSIC P18 SPECIALS P29

Inside issue 192 – ART (P07) Eden Court’s ‘FLOW’ photowall gets top billing this month, with a show of works by legendary UK photographer, Martin Parr; whilst up at Tain’s Brown’s Gallery, there is a new exhibition of paintings from Allan MacDonald. | FILM (P10) Top family films like Ant-Man & The Wasp and Christopher Robin vie with doomier beats such as Darkest Minds or Slenderman—but our fave is likely to be the feel-good Hearts Beat Loud. | KIDS (P14) It’s a Bing thing, you wouldn’t understand… B¡ng Live! brings the TV faves to Eden Court’s boards—and there’s the annual Pirate Day over in Moray… | MUSIC (P18) Of course, Belladrum dominates August’s music proceedings—but there are plenty of other iconic happenings, take your pick: Blazin’ Fiddles & Karen Matheson, PiL, Groove Loch Ness with Idris Elba, and breezy francofolksters Le Vent Du Nord. Truly we are spoiled… | SPECIALS (P29) It’s the one time of year when you needn’t panic if confronted by a dalek or stormtrooper on the High St. or, say, Inverness Ice Centre—where you’ll find NessCon & ComicCon; however, if you find them at the Black Isle Show, you should probably alert the authorities… | SPORT (P33) The new Football season launches, the Highland Games have their last hurrah and there’s a muddy Beast Race to get stuck in to. | THEATRE (P36) The classy script and songs always make My Fair Lady unmissable; R*verdance fans will flock to Rhythm Of The Dance; The End of Eddy tells a tale of tough trauma; as does Eleanor Conway although hers are more self-inflicted. Plus there are several tasty outdoor productions at Cawdor Castle, Brodie Castle and Logie Steading. | BACK END (P40) Afternoon tease…

…Faith–Faith–Faith-uh! We confess, we had no idea back in ‘87 that dear old George was singing about a future Belladrum Festival line-up, but there you go—life is strange and that’s an end to it. Yes, it’s Bella-time again, yes the stars and talents and talented stars even will be out—but more importantly, so will YOU be—and we’ll see you there. Over by the meeting place, alright?…

ART King Of The Camera One of the modern greats of photography is coming to town this month as the folk from Flow Photofest are bringing MARTIN PARR [1] to EDEN COURT on 13 AUG. It’s an “Audience With…” affair, so he’ll be answering questions and discussing a career that’s seen him publish over 100 books, have his work displayed in major galleries throughout the world and be made president of the prestigious Magnum photo agency from 2013-17, an organisation that he’s been a member of since 1994 alongside legends of the craft. Is it a craft? Or an art? Or both? We guess those are the sort of questions he’ll be addressing as well as showing some of his pictures, images that invest the most mundane of situations with a signature sense of humanity, wit and deceptive precision. Photosets like his portrayal of holidaymakers in New Brighton capture a time and a place like few others are capable of, making him one of the finest documentarians of working class Britain in the late 20th and early 21st century. If you’ve even the slightest interest in photography, don’t miss out on the chance to see someone who’s been so massively influential on its development.

Going Dark… Ahh, the school holidays—days of sun, sea, and dark, dark, air-conditioned cinemas, which is where, possibly, the kids (and/or you) will want to spend most of August such are the range of entertainment options available. Chief among them is CHRISTOPHER ROBIN [1] (Vue & EC 17), starring EWAN MACGREGOR as a grown-up version of the child hero of the Winnie the Pooh books, unexpectedly reunited with his childhood friends—voiced by the likes of JIM CUMMINGS, SOPHIE OKONEDO, PETER CAPALDI and TOBY JONES. Older kids and teens, meanwhile, are doubtless already looking forward to THE DARKEST MINDS [6] (Vue 10), the well-cast—AMANDLA STENBERG, GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE, BRADLEY WHITFORD— adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s young-adult sci-fi novel from director JENNIFER YUH NELSON, which looks pitched somewhere between 28 Days Later and X-Men. The month’s biggest blockbuster will likely be, to the surprise of few, the latest from Marvel, ANT-MAN & THE WASP [2] (Vue 03), which teams up PAUL RUDD and EVANGELINE LILLY’s title characters for a mission that includes new-comers MICHELLE PFEIFFER, LAURENCE FISHBURNE, and WALTON GOGGINS and brings back the likes of MICHAEL DOUGLAS, MICHAEL PEÑA (the first film’s scene-stealer), JUDY GREER and BOBBY CANNAVALE. Ought to be visually creative, easy-going fun. That’s pretty much it for summer’s mega-budget tentpoles, although Eden Court offer another chance to see MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT (30 Aug–07 Sep). Another sequel—of slightly lower budget and older-skewing nature—is THE EQUALIZER 2 [3] (Vue 17), which sees star DENZEL WASHINGTON and director ANTOINE FUQUA return for a follow-up to their 2014 sleeper hit, this time avenging an old friend. Most likely to be another slice of undemanding but satisfying pulp. That’s one of many options for action fans, along with MILE 22 (Vue 10), starring MARK WAHLBERG as an intelligence officer extracting a police officer with valuable intel from a foreign state, alongside JOHN MALKOVICH, LAURAN COHEN, RONDA ROUSEY and IKO UWAIS (of The Raid). Your interest will probably be determined by your opinion on Wahlberg’s previous collaborations with director PETER BERG—Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriot’s Day. KODI-SMIT MCPHEE battles to survive the elements of 20,000 BC Europe alongside a wolf in ALPHA (Vue 24), whilst there’s an altogether more over-the-top man-and-beast tale in THE MEG (10 AUG Vue), where JASON STATHAM fights a giant shark. We could say more but, do we really need to? More japes abound in THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME [4] (Vue 10), an action-comedy starring MILA KUNIS and KATE MCKINNON as two best friends dragged into an international conspiracy. The best comedy of the month, however, is likely to be HEARTS BEAT LOUD [5] (EC 24–29), the sweet and witty tale of a father-daughter songwriting duo that’s already drawing critical acclaim and has one of the best ensembles you’ll see this year: NICK OFFERMAN, KIERSEY CLEMONS, TONI COLETTE, SASHA LANE (American Honey) and TED DANSON. Also, ACTION POINT JOHNNY KNOXVILLE’s latest exercise in extreme stunts and gross-out gags exists, for those who are interested (Vue 31). Animation-wise, TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE CINEMA (Vue 03), brings the quick-fire, highly meta DC Comics series to the big screen, boasting an impressive voice cast including KRISTEN BELL and WILL ARNETT—who, confusingly, doesn’t voice Batman, that honour falls to JIMMY KIMMEL—plus JAMES CORDEN and NICOLAS CAGE as Superman, yay. More animation in WHEELY [7] (Vue 03), a tale of a taxi cab trying to save his love interest from an evil 18-wheeler in a world of anthropomorphic cars. However, perhaps the most interesting animated entry of the month is THE BIG BAD FOX AND OTHER TALES [8] (EC 24–30), a French anthology of beautifully hand-drawn animal stories—and Eden Court also plays host to the InFiFa ANIMATION SEASON (EC 05–21), which offers screenings of Aardman favourite PIRATES! IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS!, Pixar’s beguiling sci-fi WALL-E and Studio Ghibli’s typically masterful HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE.

^Last Month’s Releases This Month

As autumnal beckons, horror begins to crawl its way out of the wood-work. SLENDER MAN (Vue 24) attempts to turn the infamous online urban legend into a silver-screen franchise, perhaps a bit late, while BAD SAMARITAN [9] (Vue 24) sees ROBERT SHEEHAN (of Misfits and soon Mortal Engines)’s burglar stumble onto something horrifying when robbing DAVID TENNANT (giving a grand villainous turn) in a lean, quasi-Hitchcockian suspense thriller. Simple, old-school dramas are THE ESCAPE [10] (EC 10–16), a melancholic, introspective character study starring the excellent GEMMA ARTERTON in a highly-lauded role as the burnt-out wife of DOMINIC COOPER rethinking her life in Paris; THE CHILDREN ACT (EC 31–06) with EMMA THOMPSON as a judge presiding over a religiously sensitive medical case and STANLEY TUCCI as her discontent husband; and MARY SHELLEY (EC 03–09) about the titular author’s relationship with Percy Blythe Shelley and subsequent writing of Frankenstein. Indie and art-house treats at EC include FIRST REFORMED [11] (10–15)—the latest from PAUL SCHRADER—starring ETHAN HAWKE as the troubled priest of a declining historic NY church. Already hailed as among its director and star’s best work, this promises to be bold, powerful stuff. Another weighty, challenging tale of faith is APOSTASY (17–23), a subtle, intimate examination of divisions in a religious family. MICHAEL R. ROSKAM (Bullhead, The Drop) returns to his native Belgium and reteams with the ever-watchable MATTHIAS SCHOENAERTS for RACER & THE JAILBIRD [12] (17–21), about a Brussels gangster falling in love with ADELE EXCARCHOPOLOUS’ well-to-do race-car driver. Doc of the month must be MCQUEEN (03–07) about the late designer Alexander whilst THE ICEMAN (10–14) imagines the final days of Otzi— the caveman who’s frozen body was discovered in 1991—as a gritty, Gibson-esque (!) revenge saga, and Oscar-winner IN THE FADE [13] (24/5) also comes to town. Finally, the HIGHLAND PALESTINE FILM FESTIVAL (from 19) showcases eclectic Palestinian films.

KIDS It’s A Bing Thing… Relatively quiet month for kids this, but we guess those endless games of Fortnite aren’t going to play themselves. Still, if the little ‘uns can be convinced to pop back into the real(ish) world for a while, there are a couple of events that look good… BING LIVE! [1] at EDEN COURT on 10 & 11 AUG is the first ever stage show from the CBeebies character based on books by Ted Dewan. A relatively recent addition to the canon of much-loved children’s characters, B¡NG is joined on stage by pals Sula, Coco and Pando as they find out how to tell stories by pretending, dressing-up and singing songs. Flop and Amma are there to help, but in this magical world of make-believe things don’t always go according to plan… Full of fun, laughter and music, this might just make a perfect first theatre trip for preschoolers and their families. PIRATE DAY at the SCOTTISH DOLPHIN CENTRE is always popular, so everyone will be hoping for good weather at this year’s event on 12 AUG, one last ‘hurrah’ before the Scottish school holidays end. You’re urged to dust off your best pirate or mermaid costume and head along to join in lots of pirate fun, games and activities. You will be able to look out for sea monsters up on Shorewatch Hill and take part in the one legged pirate race and there will be lots of chocolate booty to earn from the treasure trail! No booking is required, just turn up, 10.30–4.30pm… A parrot is an optional extra! A word too for the LIVE!/BEÒ! FESTIVAL [2], a six-day event from 13–18 AUG curated by and for young people, launching on Mon 13 at BRODIE CASTLE and followed by activities taking place at Glencoe, Glenfinnan, Inverewe Gardens, Hugh Miller’s Cottage and culminating on Sat 18 at Culloden Battlefield. Expect to see National Trust treasures bought to life with activities including Gaelic rap, storytelling, new music, print-making sessions and cabaret events. Tied in with The Year Of Young People (which sounds disconcertingly like a zombie movie, or is that just us!), more info at hyah.co.uk

Bring The Noise! BELLADRUM comes early in the month, leaving plenty of space in your diaries for a host of other musical treats. Perhaps the most notable is GROOVE LOCH NESS at DORES on 18 AUG, the latest summer incarnation of the twice-yearly clubbing extravaganza. This year’s star attractions include none other than actor/DJ/friend-ofthe-Royals IDRIS ELBA [3], who has a genuine love for music and a fine knack for driving the crowd into a frenzy and won’t look out of place alongside heavyweights MK [2], HANNAH WANTS [4] and a late night sesh from BEN NICKY [1]. The groove will very much be in your heart… And if that one makes you want to keep on clubbing, the following weekend on 25 AUG as AUDIOLIFE host their 10th anniversary party at IRONWORKS with the best in local talent, plus a guest DJ to be announced and, most importantly, the friendliest of vibes. Recommended. PiL [7] revisit IRONWORKS with legend JOHN LYDON on 26 AUG with their Public Image Is Rotten tour, tied in with the excellent documentary of the same name about the band. Expect top tunes, lashings of attitude and much homage towards one of the genre’s founding fathers. Oop, and The View’s KYLE FALCONER is there 24 AUG !! >>>>>>>>> Equally respected (if rather less likely to give you a scary stare from the stage) are a brace of traditional folk’s greatest talents in the form of BLAZIN’ FIDDLES [6] and KAREN MATHESON [5] at EDEN COURT on 29 AUG. BF are celebrating 20 years of touring & recording with a tour that incorporates Matheson as guest vocalist alongside fiddlers JENNA REID, BRUCE MACGREGOR, RUA MACMILLAN and KRISTAN HARVEY, plus ANNA MASSIE on guitar/fiddle and ANGUS LYON on piano. Should be an unmissable night. More EDEN COURT highlights inclide another interesting-looking folk double bill on 24 AUG, when RANAGRI play their virtuosic instrumentals, haunting melodies, vivid storytelling and a unique take on old and new folk songs, supported by the John Martyn/Nick Drake style excellence of STEVE DAGLEISH; and sounds from foreign climes too as LE VENT DU NORD, one of the leading names in Québécois folk, bring their toe-tapping tunes on 14 AUG; whilst if you’ve been enchanted by the World Cup, you can celebrate its setting when the acclaimed RUSSIAN STRING ORCHESTRA visit on 28 AUG, bringing together many of that country’s finest string players under the banner of MISHA’S GANG [8], courtesy of the orchestra’s founder Misha Rachlevsky.

Highlight of the month and, for many, the whole year, is the BELLADRUM TARTAN HEART FESTIVAL from 02–04 AUG. Now in its 15th year, it’s been voted Best Summer Festival in the UK and is one of the most family-friendly events around as well as booking a rake of enticing acts. This year the big guns include pop songstresses PALOMA FAITH and AMY MACDONALD, the beguiling rock’n’roll swagger of PRIMAL SCREAM, the enduringly innovative CHARLATANS crowd-pleasing rapper PROFESSOR GREEN, and country royalty in ROSANNE CASH. Further down the bill there are even more delights, so we’ll be joining you in scampering from stage to stage to witness the likes of BETH ORTON, YOU ME AT SIX, FUN LOVIN’ CRIMINALS, THE LAFONTAINES, COLONEL MUSTARD & THE DIJON 5, BROKEN RECORDS, LIONAL, ‘secret’ act GERRY CINNAMON and NERINA PALLOT. One of the acts originally booked to play was FRIGHTENED RABBIT, a band closely linked to Bella since their first appearance there in ‘08, but the tragic death of Scott Hutchison seemed at first to have put paid to their presence. What’s scheduled now though is a celebration of Scott’s life, with album ‘The Midnight Organ Fight’ to be played in full with a video tribute to Hutchison and a collection on behalf of SAMH, the charity chosen by the band themselves. It promises to be one of the most emotionally memorable slots of the whole festival. There’s plenty moreCLUBBING to grab your attention, with musicFOLK of every JAZZ/WORLD stripe, plenty of attractions kids and even a bit CLASSICAL ROCK for the MORE… of gobsmackingly brilliant bike trickery from DANNY MACASKILL, plus a Bollywood theme that should bring out some creative outfits. Highland Talent On Show This is a slightly odd time of the year for music, with many of the really big names having finished their winter tours and retired to their mansions ahead of moneyspinning summer festival appearances—but that doesn’t mean we’re entirely deprived of good things to go out and see, with several dates well worth noting down in your diary, particularly by Highland musicians. Perhaps the most essential of all is 12 MAY when NEON WALTZ [1] play IRONWORKS. Their burgeoning popularity meant a smaller gig up here earlier in the year was postponed until now, with Ironworks a suitably large space to experience the Caithness lads at their most irresistibly expansive. While their elaborately cascading sound works perfectly well on record, they’re even better live and you get the feeling they’ll be going on to far bigger things in the year ahead. Catch them while you can. Prior to Neon Waltz IAIN MCLAUGHLIN was one of the Highlanders most likely to break big—and his songs certainly deserve a wider audience, but for now they’ll have to be experienced in a more intimate setting, as he and THE OUTSIDERS play gritty with THE FILTHY TONGUES at TOOTH & CLAW on 26 MAY. Meanwhile, new local talent is on show at IRONWORKS on 18 MAY when swaggery indie rockers PARK CIRCUS [2] play their first headline show at the venue with support from THE HUNT, GARRISON COURT and THE CHOSEN LONELY. Proving that creativity up here cuts right across genres, you’d also be well advised to check out HIGHLAND BATTLE LEAGUE [3] at MAD HATTERS on 18 MAY, the second instalment of a rap battle night that was a roaring success last time round, while if traditional sounds are more your bag, you can’t go wrong with the wonderful KRIS DREVER [4] playing EDEN COURT on 06 MAY.

DRUM 2018

And EDEN COURT has plenty more to offer this month including: two of Europe’s leading acoustic guitarists, GIORGIO SERCI & JONNY PHILLIPS [5] (08 MAY); folk legends THE FUREYS celebrating their 40th anniversary on 26 MAY, a return visit to the Highlands by :: Paloma Paloma Faith Faith The The Charlatans Charlatans Beth Beth Orton Orton You You Me Me At At Six Six Ward Ward Thomas Thomas Amy Amy MacDonald MacDonald Primal Primal the ‘Midnight extraordinary Mongolian collective ANDA UNIONFickle [6] (27Friends MAY), theYonaka enduringly brilliant Wilson tened ened Rabbit’s Rabbit’s ‘Midnight Organ Organ Fight’ Fight’ The The Lafontaines Lafontaines Fickle Friends Yonaka Siobhan Siobhan Wilson UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN [7] (22 MAY) and a bonaand fide more… legend, ot ot Lucy Lucy Spraggan Spraggan Fun Fun Lovin’ Lovin’ Criminals Criminals Professor Professor Green Green Isaac Isaac Gracie Gracie and more…singer TONY CHRISTIE [8] on 31 MAY. Finally some approving nods towards classical temptations in the form of MAXIMILANO MARTIN & FRIENDS at NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE (12 MAY), HIGHLAND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 27 MAY and, back at EDEN COURT on 29 MAY, SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE with a programme entitled Mozart By Numbers.

SPECIALS Come Together The month kicks off with the BLACK ISLE SHOW on 01 & 02 AUG, an event that while ostensibly an agricultural affair, goes far deeper into the Highland psyche and tradition, being as much about bringing together friends and family from across rural communities as about who’s got the best coo. It’s a slice of Highland life that’s largely unchanged in a hundred years and will quite probably still be going strong in a century’s time. Something rather more feverishly contemporary is at the heart of NESSCON INVERNESS & LOCH NESS COMIC CON [1] at INVERNESS ICE CENTRE on 25 & 26 AUG. Last year’s event was a huge success with attendees fully entering into the spirit of things by dressing in imaginative costumes and conclusively proving that nerds and geeks are the best kind of people. As ever, a host of special guests will be in attendance—this year including Game Of Thrones’ stars CLIVE RUSSELL [2], ROSS O’HENNESSY and AIMEE RICHARDSON (‘Blackfish’, Lord Of Bones and Myrcella Baratheon respectively); a stack of Power Rangers including ALISON MACINNIS (Pink), DAVI SANTOS (Gold) and STEVEN SKYLER (Gold Samurai); Scots BBC hero JAMES Raven MACKENZIE; Canadian Shadowhunters actress STEPHANIE BENNET [3]; and of course some comic book talent, notably Alan Moore collaborator, JOHN HIGGINS (Watchmen/Batman: The Killing Joke)—and more besides, bring your selfie stick! A hobby of a slightly more sedate, though no less enthusiastically pursued kind is celebrated at the INVERNESS & DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY CLUB’S ANNUAL EXHIBITION at JURY’S INN, MILLBURN ROAD, INVERNESS on 25 AUG. Whether there’ll be anyone wandering in from Comic Con is debatable, but there’ll certainly be a similarly impressive attention to detail as model trains chug through immaculately constructed tiny worlds.

SPORT Down Not Out… If there’s anything to feel positive about after last season’s performances by ROSS COUNTY and INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE apart from the latter’s low-key trophy win, it’s that they’ll be playing against each other this campaign. Not in the top flight alas, with the Highlands having no SPFL representative for the first time in over a decade, but at least there’ll be a few ‘El Kessocko’s to look forward to. As for their respective prospects, both will feel that they’re at least in with a chance of a tilt at promotion, though County’s adoption of two managers still seems a risky move. ICT meanwhile have lost club captain Gary Warren to glamour club Yeovil and may see the months ahead as more about rebuilding morale and nurturing fresh talent than anything else. County kick off their season at home to ALLOA on 04 AUG, while ICT have to wait until 11 AUG for the first game of the campaign at Caledonian Stadium, at home to AYR UTD. When we first heard about CANOE POLO we wondered how on earth they were going to get horses into boats, but—fortunately—it turns out the sport involves just human beings and kayaks. Looks like being quite a spectacle though, so we’ll be heading to the MUIRTOWN SWING BRIDGE on the Caledonian Canal for the 5TH HIGHLAND CANOE POLO TOURNAMENT on SAT 25 AUG from 10am–3pm. HIGHLAND GAMES & GATHERINGS around the area are still in full flow, notable gatherings in the weeks ahead being in DURNESS (27 JUL), STRATHCONAN (28 JUL), DORNOCH (03 AUG), NEWTONMORE (04), SKYE (08), ASSYNT (10), STRATHPEFFER (11) and HELMSDALE, GLENFINNAN & NAIRN (all 18), with the games season coming to a close in GLENURQUHART (Drumnadrochit) and GRANTOWN ON SPEY on 25 & 26 AUG respectively. The grounds of ALDOURIE CASTLE are the location for the PRIME FOUR BEAST RACE [1] on 01 SEP, a 10K obstacle course with water slides, icy loch plunges, mud, swamps and more. Not for the faint hearted, but a lot of fun.

Wouldn’t It Be Luvverly… You can’t beat a classic musical and they don’t come much better than MY FAIR LADY [2] which is on at EDEN COURT from 22–25 AUG. Lerner and Loewe’s take on Shaw’s Pygmalion might not have the most woke of messages, but it’s packed with cracking dialogue and wonderful songs, so we’re expecting good things from this production by Starlight Musical Theatre with a local cast. If it’s up to the standard of their takes on the likes of West Side Story, Oliver! And Annie, it should be a lot of fun. There’s something of a common thread of life changes running through Eden Court’s shows this month: THE END OF EDDY [1] on 26 AUG tells of Eddy—born into poverty in an isolated village in rural France, growing up amongst hard men and women living hard and violent lives. Bullied relentlessly for being gay, this is the story of his struggle to understand who he is, who he might become, and his fight to escape. Written when he was just 21 and combining vivid storytelling with frank reflections on sexuality, class and power, this stage version of Édouard Louis’ acclaimed autobiographical novel of hope, love, lust and anger is both unflinchingly honest and hugely entertaining. ELEANOR CONWAY [5] has her own Pygmalion story of sorts, albeit one revolving around overcoming an addiction to sex, drugs and alcohol. Her show here last year was a comedy highlight, mixing brutally honest confessions with genuinely heartbreaking anecdotes and an uncompromising wit. She’s got that greatest stand-up quality, funny bones, as she’ll no doubt prove when she returns to EDEN COURT on 28 AUG with her new show, WALK OF SHAME 2. Lots of outdoor theatre too, which is fitting since it’s the first summer we can remember that’s perfectly suited to the alfresco experience. Over at LOGIE STEADING on 18 AUG there’s Conan Doyle’s spooky adventure HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, then on 23 AUG, the always enjoyable PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Meanwhile at BRODIE CASTLE on 10 AUG, all female cycling troupe The Handlebards [4] are putting on their version of ROMEO & JULIET. Before touring their ‘seriously silly’ production around the world they pedalled it 1500 miles around the UK by bicycle, with all the necessary set, props and costumes in tow. Now they’re back by popular demand. They’re also performing it at INVEREWE GARDENS (08 AUG) and VICTORIA HALL CROMARTY (09 AUG). Over at CAWDOR CASTLE there’s another Shakespeare play, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING on 05 AUG and on 17 AUG Quantum Theatre’s adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s, THE RELUCTANT DRAGON, a touching, sweet and funny tale of bravery, friendship and derring-do for all the family. Back indoors there’s a return to EDEN COURT for RHYTHM OF THE DANCE [3] on 06 AUG, wherein Irish culture and music is celebrated through keeping your arms by your side and kicking your legs in the air. And very impressive it is too. More THEATRE features and events at:

Coul House Hotel Contin 01997 421487

For the final part of our two-month quest for the best Afternoon Teas to be had in the area, we motor a little further afield, to Coul House Hotel in Contin, a thirty minute drive from Inverness. It’s close enough to the city to be a convenient excursion and, particularly if you’re a tourist, the journey there offers some fine views of the fabulous Highland landscape on our doorstep. Coul House is something of a labour of love, having been bought sight unseen back in 2003 by Stuart and Susannah Macpherson, who have not only raised their family there, but restored the building piece by piece to its original 1820s grandeur, while introducing contemporary luxury. Unsurprising then that it’s so popular with wedding parties, drivers undertaking the nearby North Coast 500 and people who’ve heard of some delightful surprises to be found in its grounds, more of which later. Because what we’re interested in is afternoon tea, something that is worth booking since even on a midweek lunchtime the place is bustling with visitors. And the immediate atmosphere is more like being at a friend’s country house than a hotel, with the cutest of Yorkshire terriers sitting on the counter of the reception desk offering a heart-melting welcome and its black spaniel pal wandering around investigating everything going on. It goes without saying that Coul House proclaims itself dog-friendly, but the two resident pooches aren’t intrusive, just part of a delightfully casual atmosphere making you feel instantly at home. Our friendly host takes us into one of the two rooms in which afternoon tea is served, a gorgeous old room that conjures up images of how it must have been in days gone by. The prime table by the window with beautiful views over the lawn is taken, but we settle into a couple of comfy armchairs to sample

42

what’s on offer. As with Loch Ness Country House, everything isn’t served at once and indeed you can pick and choose individual items from the menu to customise your afternoon tea. First up it’s sandwiches and they’re all pretty impressive, Tain Truckle Cheddar and Pickle, Baked Ham and Tomato and Treacle Cured Smoked Salmon all hitting the spot, while the stand out is an interesting combination of Clava Brie and Apple Jelly, a meeting of tastes that approaches the sublime and which we’d never even considered before. Onto the sweets and another fine array of cakes. Frangipane Slices and a Pistachio and Olive Oil Cake are both excellent, but better still are Meringue Nests and a grown up, bitter Chocolate Mousse affair, rich without being overwhelming and a perfect balance to the sweetness of the rest of the desserts. There are Scones too, these from Coul House’s chef Garry, apparently rather famous. Freshly baked and still warm, they come dusted with icing sugar and further display the talent in the kitchen. After such a filling spread, we’re advised to have a wander around the grounds and particularly to take in the Fairy Trail, something of a Highland hidden treasure. And it really is rather fabulous. A path through the woods is studded with tiny fairy houses and even a miniature pub and post box, with halfhidden surprises at every turn. Summer’s hotting up...

The property market has been heating up at HSPC this summer. So far HSPC has had an increase in the number of properties being registered for sale. With new property insertions up by a chunky margin of 10% compared to the same period last summer. This is a great change for buyers and sellers as Sarah Woodcock, HSPC Manager, explains: “The numbers of properties for sale across the region has been low in the last 12 months, this has meant less choice for buyers but we are experiencing an increase in the numbers coming to the market this summer. HSPC’s market share also keeps growing—currently HSPC represents over half of all the Highlands’ properties for sale, making it the natural first choice when it comes to buying, or selling your property. The business keeps growing in strength as sellers know they get expertise they can trust when using our solicitor firms, and buyers know we have the widest range of properties with convenient ways for them to undertake their property search. With our popular website, well-read and ever popular Hot Property paper, and window displays at locations across the Highlands.”
