Now firmly established as one of Scotland’s favourite family Halloween events; another bumper crowd is expected to dress up and head to the banks of the River Ness to discover what’s lurking in the darkness as the 2018 Inverness Winter Festival makes a welcome return… This official theme is ‘Nights of the Living Dead’—and spectators brave enough to step on to Ness Islands can expect to be taken on a magical journey created by Eden Court Creative and Arts in Motion down into the very heart and soul of everything they have ever been afraid of… This collaborative community event couldn’t take place without the support and expertise of all those involved— including the Inverness Common Good Fund, Fly Agaric, Limelights Event Services and the Council’s award winning Events Team. And, of course, YOU—young and old alike, dressed up, dressed down, families & friends. We look forward to seeing you all there again this year!

g up to discover what is lying in wait on Ness Islands. Admission is free (if you dare). NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD: What to expect… Remember staying up late, way past bedtime to watch a Halloween film in secret, and then later regretting it as you lay awake to scared to switch the light off? Well, on Ness Islands this year, prepare for a trip down memory lane through some of our favourite Halloween movies of the 80’s and 90’s. Cross the bridge from the Bught Park side to Island 1 and pass through the lightning gate to be transported back in time and begin your Nights of the Living Dead journey…Are you afraid of the dark? Bring a beam torch so you can spot the weird and unexplained goings on – the kids from Scooby Doo will be on hand to help with the investigations. How did so many Chuckie Dolls end up on the Islands, and what exactly is meant to be fun about that Funfair? On the 2nd Island, you’ll be able to enter our living Retro Arcade, but keep your wits about you, as there’s more than animations living within these games. If you’re feeling chilly on the night, you can always join our skeleton aerobics group, as they get physical to some to fine tunes from the 80’s. You might also bump into our motley Ghostbuster crew who are searching for an answer to the uncharted levels of metaphysical activity registered on the Islands this year…

If you don’t know what LGBTQ+ stands for, it just means humans—people who are marginalised and discriminated against by laws, institutions, and people who are unkind or misled. It is incredibly important that ALL of us who support their rights turn out to show our support—and why not have a great party whilst doing it. These are YOUR children, relatives and friends, whether you realise it or not. It is time to get together and show the world we care. See. You. There. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

ART Highlighting the Highlands One of the most popular and ubiquitous Highland artists is the mysteriously named VEGA [1], who chose her nom de plume out of respect for a boat that carried her safely for hundreds of miles. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Leeds University and now lives in the Outer Hebrides, where the local environment provides inspiration for her oil paintings, a new selection of which are on show at CASTLE GALLERY from 06–27 OCT. The clarity of light and fantastic sunsets on her adopted home have undoubtedly influenced her use of strong, dramatic colour, while she is a superb technician and is able to manipulate the paint with the flick of a brush to suggest movement in the dogs and sheep that populate many of her works.

The FLOW PHOTOFEST wall at EDEN COURT continues to be a regularly changing showcase for some excellent work and this month is no exception. ANDREA INGRAM’s exquisite abstract prints are on show until 06 OCT under the title WHATEVER IT IS, IT’S OVERRATED, then from 08 OCT-10 NOV, SHORELINE ROCKS displays the photos of MICHAEL GALLAGHER. Twice a day the tide rises and falls, making shorelines a place of constant change and providing some of the most diverse landscapes we can see. Drawing on his background in Geology, Michael’s collection highlights the erosion and creation, the textures and boundaries that have shaped the Highlands.

The Moon & Stars… With GLORIOUS THE the summer12TH behind us and the drama of the festival season having largely played out, it’s thatMAN of the films12th) afloat on the buoyance of ‘awards buzz’ begin arriving in FIRST [1]year (EC,where Vue from cinemas. MANDY [2] Whiplash (Vue 12) and La La Land director DAMIEN CHAZELLE has been a fixture of awards shows of late, that hot[3] streak BAD TIMES ATand THEexpect EL ROYALE (Vue to 12)continue with FIRST MAN [1] (EC 12–25, Vue 12), a dramatization of 12) < SMALLFOOT [4] (Vue “one small step” astronaut Neil Armstrong’s life starring RYAN GOSLING Armstrong < WHEELYas(Vue 12) alongside CLAIRE FOY, JASON CLARKE, KYLE CHANDLER, COREY STOLL and LUKAS HAAS. Early reviews have lavished praise upon Gosling’s performance, the film’sRAILS attention to detail, and its stunning, terrifying recreation of space travel. Also ON THE attracting raves is A BEVERLY STAR IS BORN [2] (Vue Oct), in 26) which BRADLEY COOPER (also his AN EVENING WITH LUFF LINN [5] 05 (Vue from directorial debut) andRULEZ LADY GAGA stepfrom into 30) the roles previously occupied by Janet Gaynor & SLAUGHTERHOUSE [6] (Vue Fredrich March, Judy Garland & James Mason, and Barbra Streisand & Kris Kristofferson. That cast and the presence for a Spider-Man THE WIFE (EC 26–01) of Zombieland’s REUBEN FLEISCHER behind the camera would seem promising, but the FUNNY so GIRL–THE MUSICAL (EC 29)theme song don’t exactly bode well. trailers far and the, errr, Eminem THE EXORCIST [12] (Director’s Cut) (EC 30) Infifa: Difficult Shoots It being Halloween-time, there are of course horrors on offer. Most promising is MANDY [4] (Vue 12), a gleefully psychedelic grindhouse freak-out featuring a widely-lauded performance from the patron saint of gleefully psychedelic grindhouse freak-outs, NICOLAS CAGE: looks CONTINUING visually KING OFstunning THIEVESand (ECwonderfully until 04) bonkers. Former Kula Shaker frontman CRISPIAN MILLS directs SLAUGHTERHOUSE THE LITTLE STRANGER (EC RULEZ until 04)[5] (Vue 30), a private-school set horror-comedy full of profane punchlines, slapstick gore, and fanboy-friendly genre riffs in the Shaun of the Dead mould—and indeed SIMON PEGG and NICK FROST are among its ensemble players, heathers alongside ASA2BUTTERFIELD and MICHAEL SHEEN. Eden Court also offer a chance to either goosebumps acquaint yourself with or re-experience two genre classics, THE EXORCIST [6] director’s cut (30) and the category-defying, ahead-of-its-time high-school splatter-satire HEATHERS (19/20). Not fitting easily into any genre binaries but well worth a look for lovers of the strange is AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN [7] (26 OCT Vue), a bizarre crime comedy from The Greasy Strangler director JIM HOSKINGS, featuring the delightful combination of AUBREY PLAZA, JERMAINE CLEMENT, CRAIG ROBINSON and MATT BERRY. Ooft! More for kids and families in the form of JOHNNY ENGLISH STRIKES AGAIN (Vue 05), the inexplicable return of the spy-spoof franchise starring ROWAN ATKINSON as an inept secret agent, and SMALLFOOT [8] (Vue 12), a post-Pixar/Dreamworks kind of take on the Bigfoot legend with the voices of CHANNING TATUM, JAMES CORDEN, ZENDAYA and DANNY DEVITO. October also offers a few of the old-school, adult-driven, mid-budget dramas that these days often thrive outside the summer. GLENN CLOSE finally gets another meaty leading role in THE WIFE (EC 26–01), as a woman questioning the course of her life after self-absorbed husband JONATHAN PRYCE wins a Nobel Prize. A classy ensemble—JEFF BRIDGES, CYNTHIA ERVO,

^Last Month’s Releases This Month

DAKOTA JOHNSON, JON HAMM and CHRIS HEMSWORTH—assembles for BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE [9] (Vue 12), a stylish neo-noir thriller centred on a group of strangers who all meet one fateful night at the titular hotel. GERARD BUTLER continues to be the best 80s action star of the 2010s, starring in HUNTER KILLER (Vue 19) as a submarine commander tasked with zzzz… Russian President: COMMON also features, as, inevitably, does GARY OLDMAN, and MICHAEL NYQVIST (in one of his final film appearances). As ever, Eden Court boast some strong indie and art-house releases. COLUMBUS [10] (19–23) is probably the most heartfelt film ever made about architecture, as JOHN CHO (now finally getting roles he deserves) and the also ever-excellent HAYLEY LU RICHARDSON play an architect and a young woman caring for her mother, who form a connection against the backdrop of the title city in a gentle and observant debut feature from video essayist KOGONADA. Another slow-burning love story (that won lead, ANA BRUN, Best Actress at the Berlin Film Fest) is THE HEIRESSES (05–11), about the relationship between two wealthy Paraguyans. REBELS ON POINTE [11] (10) is sure to be one of the month’s most compelling films, a doc all-male drag ballet troup Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and examining their professional lives and ties to queer history. InFiFa New Zealand Season closes out with a screening of striking 2005 colonial war drama RIVER QUEEN [12] (02), while there’s also a chance to catch a live broadcast of FUNNY GIRL – THE MUSICAL (29 OCT EC) with luvvie Sheridan Smith and, erm, Darius...

Better With Age… Golden oldies are to the fore this month, either in person or in the form of a plethora of tribute acts, the latter genre still dominating the musical landscape up here. We’re still not entirely sure whether that’s a good thing, but guess that at least it means you’re going to get to hear some good songs. That’s certainly the case with 10CC [1], who play EDEN COURT on 22 OCT. In the mid 70s they made some of the most inventive pop music this country has ever produced, combining an always underrated knack for great hooks with groundbreaking stylistic invention. Sure, I’m Not In Love will always border on the mawkish, but there’s far more to them than that. There’s their two other No.1 singles, Rubber Bullets and Dreadlock Holiday—but we prefer the weird daydream drama of I’m Mandy, Fly Me or the catchily effortless classic The Things We Do for Love. LEO SAYER [2] is similarly defined by his 70s pop hits, but he’s also proved that to be somewhat misleading with an enduring career that’s outlasted many of his peers. And he still looks and sounds remarkably sprightly. That may be due to the fact he’s now an Aussie citizen, but we prefer to wonder what the painting in his attic’s like. Maybe he’ll tell us when he plays EDEN COURT on 10 OCT. While punk rock was setting fire to all that had gone before in 1976, WISHBONE ASH [3], despite their name, somehow emerged relatively unscathed. While they rarely came within a sniff of a hit, they’ve retained a loyal fanbase who’ll no doubt be out in force when they play EC on 28 OCT. It’s not all performers at the tail-end of their careers though, as proved by the still ebullient talents of folk veterans ALY BAIN, ALE MÖLLER & BRUCE MOLSKY [4] who play EC on 22 OCT. And so to the welter of tribute shows. Four that stand out are career overviews, namely SONGBIRD: ELLYN OLIVER SINGS EVA CASSIDY (EC 07 OCT), KEITH JAMES performing THE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE (EC 11 OCT), THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY (EC 24 OCT) and accordion virtuoso BRANDON MCPHEE celebrating the legendary JIMMY SHAND (EC 07 OCT). If you’re after something a little rockier, how about MOTORHEADACHE or the UK FOO FIGHTERS at IRONWORKS on 05 & 12 OCT respectively? Or a rather more unusual tribute, this time to the unhinged genius of FRANK ZAPPA when PYGMY TWYLYTE comes to EDEN COURT on 26 OCT. PINK FLOYD fans meanwhile are spoilt for choice with two tributes to their heroes hitting town in the form of the UK PINK FLOYD EXPERIENCE at EC on 05 OCT and the highly regarded Scots combo MACFLOYD at IRONWORKS on 27 OCT. Maybe you just want to hear a set full of 24 carat gold pop classics, in which case you can’t go wrong with the ABBA PARTY NIGHT at EDEN COURT on 12 OCT. Away from the rock and pop there’s a trio of noteworthy classical attractions courtesy of one of Britain’s foremost pianists LEON MCCAWLEY [5] at NAIRN COMMUNITY & ART CENTRE on 05 OCT, SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA [6] at EDEN COURT on 06 OCT and the always excellent SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE [7] at the same venue on 10 OCT.CLUBBING CLASSICAL FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK MORE…

SPECIALS Highland Pride. A significant landmark this month as EDEN COURT hosts PROUD-NESS [1] on SAT 06 OCT, the first large scale LGBT event for the Highlands and Islands. The day will start off with a march through the city centre to Eden Court where the day’s events will continue. This will include workshops, talks, music and stalls from different organisations that serve the LGBTQ+ community. The day will round off with an after party at the Mercure Hotel. Further details at proud-ness.org It’s not well known that SIMON REEVE [2], who appears at EDEN COURT on 11 OCT is something of an expert analyst on the rise of Islamic terrorism, having initially made his name covering the subject. These days he’s more famous as one of the very best professional globetrotters, his TV series managing to both educate and entertain thanks to a friendly persona and a genuine interest in the people he meets along the way. Having visited 120 countries and packed in more adventures over the last decade than most of us will experience in several lifetimes, he should have plenty to talk about at his “Audience With…” event, that will include exclusive footage and a Q&A. More yarns from far flung lands at EC on 24 OCT as DOUG ALLAN [3] presents WILD IMAGES, WILD LIFE—an evening of behind the scenes stories for all the family, with highlights from the most challenging assignments of his 35 years filming wildlife in the remotest places on Earth. Find out if snow leopards or leopard seals are the most scary; discover how to get close to the biggest fish in the sea and whether your eyeballs freeze at minus 50. Fancy celebrating something a little more sedentary? If so, you can’t go wrong with the LOCH NESS KNIT FEST [4] (19-21 OCT), now in its third year and attracting fans of the hobby from all over the world. Inverness Leisure Centre is the hub for a programme of events that includes 30+ workshops, main stage entertainment, crafting village and a marketplace with over 60 sellers. In addition to the array of crafting delights you can also enjoy a ceilidh with renowned fiddle supergroup Blazin Fiddles, tuck into a Highland feast, take a cruise on Loch Ness and much more. See lochnessknitfest.com for full details and tickets A word too for the DORNOCH WHISKY FESTIVAL [5] taking place from 26-29 OCT. There are tastings, exhibitions, cookery demonstrations, a Young Highland Chef Of The Year competition and even an accompanying golf tournament. Full programme at dornochwhiskyfestival.com

SPORT Climb, Run, Kick… Calling all climbers—whether you are part of a club, an individual, experienced climber (or even if you’ve never tried it before)—you should head along to the REIFF CLIMBING FESTIVAL [1] in ACHILTIBUIE from 12–14 OCT. Activities include recreating the ‘indoor wall’ outdoors, for those who want to join in but don’t have the kit; workshops with a coach/instructor for those who want to improve their skills; and a Geology For Climbers talk;—plus a ceilidh to round things off at the Coigach Community Hall from 8pm till midnight (price included with camp & ceilidh ticket). Families very welcome. More details at reiffclimbingfestival.com Achiltibuie also hosts what must be one of the most picturesque and remote runs in the UK, the COIGACH HALF MARATHON [2], on 13 OCT—right in the middle of the Climbing Festival—will any hardy souls be putting themselves through both events, we wonder? So much beauty, so much pain… It’s been a while since an El Kessoko derby between INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE [3] and ROSS COUNTY meant anything more than bragging rights, but with our local teams at the time of writing occupying the top two slots in the Championship, their match at the CALEDONIAN STADIUM on 03 NOV actually counts for something. And with both outfits starting the season so confidently, it should be a corker.

[2] There’s plenty of original drama at EDEN COURT this month so make a note in your diary of three more must-see productions, beginning with TOURETTESHERO’s FUTURE PROOF project on 20 OCT which brings Hacks for the Future to the Highlands with Jess Thom—theatre-maker, comedian, disability rights activist, and co-founder of Touretteshero. They have created a collaborative work, with a selected group of disabled young people from across Scotland, resulting in an inclusive extravaganza of installations, performances, discussions and workshops looking at history and how we can creatively shape the future.

THEATRE Let’s Dance. [1] Dance performances at EDEN COURT are always popular and recent times have seen everything from conventionally classical shows to modern street styles and ambitious multimedia extravaganzas. This month it’s the return of one of our very favourite companies LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO who bring their hilarious, yet accomplished take on the art to EC on 26 & 27 OCT. For more than 40 years, the all-male comedy ballet company, affectionately known as “The Trocks” have been delighting audiences of all ages at sell-out performances featuring their fabulous sense of fun and their flawless dance. Established, despite what their name might suggest, in New York, the Trocks are now globally famous thanks to their sassy spoofs and hilarious homages to classical ballet, where 18 dancers each transform into two personas, both male and female. Every performance froths with tutus and testosterone, blush-pink ballet pumps, fierce false eyelashes and prima ballerina attitude, but what sets this company apart is their immaculate technique and daring physicality, providing an astonishing foundation for their impeccable comic timing.

[3] Some of you might have seen FAR, FAR FROM YPRES last month in Ullapool. If not then the performance at EDEN COURT on 21 OCT gives you another opportunity to witness a moving tale of a Scotsman’s journey to the Western Front in WW1, narrated by BBC Radio Scotland’s IAIN ANDERSON and musically illustrated by the finest singers on the Scottish acoustic scene. As the centenary of the Armistice approaches, it’s an inventive and accomplished tribute to the horrors of a hundred years ago.

4

[4] More horrors recalled, though this time fictional in THE MACBETHS (EC, 23 OCT), a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth using a radically cut version of the text and focuses on the relationship between one of the most famous killers in literature and his ambitious wife. Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre’s Artistic Director Dominic Hill’s brutal and intense production tells the Bard’s famous story in a powerfully concentrated 70 minutes.

[5] There’s yet more engaging dance in RUMPELSTILTSKIN at EDEN COURT on 01 & 02 OCT. The panto season is still a couple of months away and this, one of the most elegant yarns in the fairy tale canon, isn’t best suited to the slapstick treatment, so it’s probably best left to the wonderful performers from BALLETLORENT, the company that brought us extraordinary reimaginings of Rapunzel and Snow White. Combining spectacle and storytelling, this emotionally rich production spins a tale of greed, loss, adventure and love where the alchemist Rumpelstiltskin is outcast from his kingdom until he is revealed to be ‘the true prince that he was’. It’s an original adaptation directed by LIV LORENT and retold by Poet Laureate CAROL ANN DUFFY, with a score by Doctor Who composer MURRAY GOLD, costumes designed by MICHELE CLAPTON (Game of Thrones), narration by actor BEN CROMPTON, performed by world-class inimitable balletLORENT dancers and a local intergenerational cast of children and older adults. Glorious dance theatre for family audiences.

[6] You can always rely on DOGSTAR THEATRE to create something entertainingly original and their new show, LET’S INHERIT THE EARTH (EC 30 & 31 OCT) looks rather intriguing. Set in the near future, when “Adele has just hit number one with her new album 43” it finds three turtles somewhere in the Caribbean staring in disbelief and helplessness at the expanding patch of seaweed which threatens to destroy their habitat. The seaweed spreads towards luxury beach-front condominiums, owned by the super-rich Mucklefannys of the Highlands and the Storskinkas of Sweden. Their concern is the threat to the value of their properties and the quality of their cocktails. Meanwhile in Moray, Jane and Grant have stocked up on weaponry, an inflatable canoe and Marmite in case of an “event”. Sure enough, the North Sea floods in and the geography of northern Europe is transformed. The forests of Sweden are on fire. Josef, Tove and their child Lukas are frantically packing as the fire approaches. Lukas asks about granny stuck upstairs. The granny that her dad insists is a cockroach. And that’s just the starting point. If you enjoyed Dogstar’s last show in Inverness, their innovative take on the story of explorer Mungo Park, this should prove equally gripping. Recommended.

EATING OUT

MacGregor’s Bar 113 Academy St, Inverness 01463 719 629 A young woman with a backpack walks into MacGregor’s Bar and asks if she can use the loo. “Of course you can,” says the stylish barman, directing her towards the inventively decked out conveniences, incorporating cut-up beer barrels as sinks and a sparklingly modern design. Not some kind of post-modernist gag, but a vignette that shows something of the welcoming spirit that underpins what has rapidly become one of the most popular places in town. No grumpy demands that she gets a drink if she wants to use the facilities as would be the response in many other places, just an instinctively accommodating response.

Sales Up 22%

HSPC Sales in August were up on previous year a huge 22%. HSPC’s market share has also increased substantially in 2018, although the general picture has been fewer numbers of properties coming onto the market across the Highlands in the last 2 years. The lack of supply means the demand from buyers has led to more closing dates and also faster sales, especially in Inverness. Looking at a snapshot of sales last August compared to this August, there is a big increase in the number of properties going above asking price. The percentage difference in the asking price compared to selling price is also increasing, with one property in August incredibly going for 47% higher than the asking price. Sarah Woodcock, HSPC manager, said “The good news for HSPC is that sellers choose HSPC solicitor firms to sell, in greater numbers than ever. They know they can trust them to get best
