Wicklow Walking Festival with Footfalls

Gates of Hell - Virtual Reality & Night Tour

Combination VR & Night Tour set to take place on Friday 28th October.

These are running every half hour between 6pm & 9pm. Average length of VR & Night Tour is 90 minutes. Take an eerie night tour of Wicklow Jail – Ireland’s most haunted building.

This fully immersive seated experience will transport visitors back in time to Wicklow Gaol in the 1700’s – a grim 3-dimensional world of corruption, rebellion & dark dungeons. Some of the Gaol’s most notorious prisoners will feature & there may even be a guest appearance from one of the

“Winding down the summer tasks and looking towards winter projects. This is a transition time in the Gardens.

Everything is dramatically changing in the gardens in terms of shapes and colours.

In the Japanese Garden the Japanese Maple turns from green to yellows and then to reds (due to reduced chlorophyl in leaves). Surrounding Triton Lake, the maples and acers change colour dramatically framing the lake. The dawn redwoods in the garden light up changing from

shades of tawny pink to gold Autumn colour.

Autumn is a time for planting winter and spring bedding, all the annual beds (Italian, memorials, all the urns), tulips and the other bulbs - daffodils and bluebells. In the Italian and Memorial Garden, the historic planters and urns are carefully planted (over 40 individually planted).”

What You Don’t Know Can Cost You:

1. 14% Fireplaces are warm, right? Yes, but if the flue is left open, 14% of your heat goes up the chimney. You might as well be burning money.

2. 13% Everywhere pipes, wires or lighting come into your house, heat can get out. Seals and in sulation can keep up to 13 percent of that heat inside where it belongs.

3. 10% Windows leak about 10% of your warm air. Get them sealed up with caulk and shut them tight.

4. 15% Another 15% of your heat gets out through leaky duct work. Sealing them up can yield sav ings of 10 – 20 percent.

5. 11% Doors are major culprits. A 1/8inch gap is like knocking a hole in your wall. Proper weather stripping can reduce the 11 percent loss to nearly zero.

6. 31% of heat escapes through your ceiling, walls and floors. Checking and replacing damaged in sulation or adding additional insulation can lead to big savings.

Viewing Tower & Tree Top Walk at Avondale

Standing amid a grove of eucalyptus trees on the edge of the historic Great Ride at Avondale the Viewing Tower reaches 38 metres into the sky and can be seen peeping above the trees on approach from Rathdrum.

It is a marvel of timber construction using innovative glulam beams – an engineered wood product that equals the structural strength of steel – and the most modern methods of building with wood. The wood in the Viewing Tower (and the Treetop Walk) is Irish with many of the trees coming from right here in Avondale Forest Park.

To reach the Viewing Tower you must first follow the treetop walk – from the tunnel you emerge at the foot of the tower. The spiral ramped boardwalk rises slowly through the forest never exceeding a gradient of 6 degrees which makes it

fully wheelchair and pram accessible with resting points on each level. As you move upwards keep an ear out for the Great Spotted Woodpecker family who nest in one of the nearby eucalyptus trees. You may also see other wildlife and plant life and you will certainly see new vistas from the ever-increasing heights.

After 10 gentle circuits you will reach the circular viewing platform at the top of the tower with 360° panoramic views over Avondale Forest Park, the Vale of Avoca, the Wicklow Mountains and beyond. You will be looking down on the tops of some of the mightiest trees in Ireland from this vantage point. You

may also see Red Kites overhead – they have been reintroduced into the area and are thriving in Avondale. Don’t forget to take some photos but hold on tight to your phone or camera.

To continue the adventure, take the option to whizz back down to earth on the giant spiral slide inside the Viewing Tower. Alternatively continue back down the ramped boardwalk to the forest floor once more.
