This has been a great year for RwandAir. We launched Abuja and Cape Town in April and May respectively and soon, RwandAir will expand its wings to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia with 5 flights per week. This is in line with our commitment to connect Africa as never before. The list of upcoming new destinations is still growing with Guangzhou, Tel Aviv, Bamako, Conakry and New York in the pipeline. As we move to 2019, there is more exciting news to share with you. In addition to the launch of new routes, we are expecting the delivery of four new aircraft to join our fleet. Kart racing, the new motorsport in Rwanda Rwanda, home to 6 annual car rallies, just added a line-up of events for motorsports enthusiasts. The Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC), the national association and a member of the International Automobile Federation or Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), will host kart racing, cross-car and virtual rally events on a regular basis in 2019. With monthly races open to the public, kart racing will be the new discipline showcased by RAC. The launch of kart racing in Rwanda received the support of FIA to encourage youth to develop interest in and pursue motorsports from an early age.

The initiative was launched by RAC at the end of an international conference which attracted participants from 19 African countries and in the presence of the President of FIA, Jean Todt. There are currently 10 karts available in Rwanda, to which 15 more will be added next year. The calendar of upcoming events announced during the launch was welcomed enthusiastically by the public, providing incentive for RAC to drive their initiative further. Year one will focus on promoting the sport and attracting as many people for the monthly races, and from year two onwards, a professional championship will be launched with annual licences and

Échapper à la réalité Bienvenue dans la première et unique Adventure Room de Kigali, un jeu d’évasion grandeur nature où le but est de s’échapper de la pièce, intitulée le Repère des Braconniers. C’est une façon amusante de passer du temps en famille, avec des amis ou des collègues. Comment est-ce que cela fonctionne ? Vous et votre équipe êtes enfermés dans une mystérieuse salle et vous devez travailler ensemble pour chercher des indices, résoudre des puzzles et décrypter des codes. Ensemble vous devrez découvrir les secrets que renferme la pièce et vous en échapper. Avant d’y entrer, un « Maître du Jeu » vous expliquera l’histoire, les règles et la mission du jeu, dans notre cas, découvrir l’identité des braconniers. Le reste dépend de vous et de l’ingéniosité de votre équipe. Ce type de jeu d’évasion grandeur nature est devenu populaire dans les années 2010 et s’est répandu dans le monde entier. Certains endroits disposent de plusieurs salles dotées de thèmes et de niveaux de difficultés différents. Il peut s’agir d’une chasse au trésor, vous pouvez être enfermés sur un vaisseau spatial ou essayer d’échapper à des zombies, mais vous devrez toujours travailler en équipe pour réussir, et avoir la capacité de choisir la bonne stratégie et les bonnes tactiques. La plupart des endroits sont appropriés pour des groupes de 2 à 7 personnes. Voici une sélection de ces Adventure Rooms en Afrique.

Our Sister Killjoy Ghanaian author Ama Ata Aidoo’s debut novel Our Sister Killjoy: or Reflections from a Black-eyed Squint is an exploration of Africa’s problems with relation to Western interference and testifies to the predicament in which the continent finds itself today. Published in 1977, and written in prose-poetry, the story is told from the point of view of Sissie, the Ghanaian woman who is accepted on an academic programme in Germany to work in a pine nursery. Through personal observations and conversations, she delivers a sarcastic and humorous discourse on a myriad of issues ranging from the borrowed Victorian idea of billing strong, outspoken women as unladylike to white saviour-ism. On her arrival to Frankfurt, Sissie is compelled to acknowledge race for the first time after a German girl calls her a “black girl”. Confused, she turns around to find everyone around her is white, and though she considers the presence or lack of melanin inconsequential, she concedes that such differences constituted the basis for apartheid in South Africa, the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism.

You can be on a treasure hunt, trapped in a space ship or trying to escape from zombies, but you always need teamwork to succeed and the ability to apply the right strategy and tactics. On September 1, I received a panicked phone call from a close friend in Bujumbura. Her daughter and her niece were traveling back together from South Africa and via Kigali. But the niece became very ill in Kigali, and she was taken to the Kanombe hospital.

Hello, I made my first trip to Rwanda and I am happy to say it was on a direct flight by RwandAir It was refreshing the moment I got onboard, the efficient crew, the clean and new aircraft, the efficient time of landing, the awesome landing done by your pilots etc. Both my flights were a pleasure. I always sit on the emergency exits so here too I got these seats and they surprisingly have so much more space that even a regular 737. The cabin crew especially were very charming and efficient. The inflight food was also nice. In Kigali I left my neck pillow at the gates and boarded the flight and informed to the crew. They actually called someone and got the pillow before takeoff :) my favorite pillow was back with me... On a 6 hour flight I actually was able to sleep for more than 4 hours which is a testimonial to the smooth flight. I am happy to also inform you that the catering loaders both in Mumbai and Kigali have been manufactured by my company Nandan GSE for ambassador Sky Chefs and ASL respectively. So in a way I am also connected with your airline as a stakeholder. I attended the 4th African Stakeholders GHI conference at the Convention center in Kigali on 11th September and listened to the

The girl stayed in the hospital for four days, and I want to tell you how impressed and grateful I am for the assistance of RwandAir in this period. Every day, someone from your airline visited to check on her, to bring her food and fruits and water, and to find out about her status for flying. You didn't miss a day, and you never forgot about her. Even in this very good service, you have one employee who went "above and beyond" as we say at home. Your Customer Service Representative named James Nkurunziza was a tremendous comfort and assistance. Although he only had to work on this case on Friday afternoon, he checked on me every day to find out how the girl was doing and see how the family was coping. And every day, he shared with me the number of the airline personnel on duty that day. At moments when I couldn't reach anyone, James made sure they got in touch, and if we faced any issues, James made sure we resolved them. It was him who helped us get the girl all the assistance she needed to travel on Monday, her day of departure. Welcome to Kigali’s first and only Adventure Room, a live action escape game, called The Poacher’s Lair. It is a fun way to spend time with family, friends or colleagues. How it works? You and your team are locked in a mysterious room and you must work together to hunt for clues, solve puzzles and crack codes. Together you must discover the secrets inside the room and escape. Before you enter, a ‘Gamemaster’ will explain the storyline, the rules and the mission of the game, in our case, to discover the identities of the poachers. The rest is up to you and your resourcefulness as a team. Live escape games became popular in the 2010s and they have spread across the globe. Some locations have multiple rooms that each have a different theme and difficulty level. You can be on a treasure hunt, trapped in a space ship or trying to escape from zombies, but you always need teamwork to succeed and the ability to apply the right strategy and tactics. HOW OSHEN KING FAISAL HOSPITAL IS INCREASING ACCESS TO PEDIATRICIANS Real-time telepediatrics consultation at Oshen-KFH

The term ‘Telepediatrics’ when used loosely could lead most to think of complex medical procedures that are a sole preserve of developed countries. However, a leading Rwandan Hospital, Oshen King Faisal, is using it to increase access to quality health care to children across the country. In simple terms, Telepediatrics is the use of telemedicine for pediatric consultations. With that a pediatrician in Kigali can consult young patients from miles away in remotes part of the country which enables them break barriers of time and geography. Oshen King Faisal has partnered with Rwanda Ministry of Health to ensure proximity (or lack of) to a major health facility is not a factor in access to healthcare for children. The initiative which is currently in its initial phase came up on realization that despite increase of pediatricians in the country as well as health facilities, the doctor-patient ratio remains fairly low. According to statistics from the Health Management Information System, Rwandan health centers handle over 300,000 pediatric consultations monthly with up to 20 per cent requiring referral due to lack of capacity to handle complex cases. Dr. Edgar Kalimba the Head of Neonatology, Child Health and Pediatrics at Oshen King Faisal Hospital says that the concept is simply leveraging on technology to reduce existing gaps in healthcare. “When you look at the population of Rwanda which is about 12 Million, almost 40 per cent are children. Which shows that there is a gap in terms of access to healthcare given the number of pediatricians. The good thing about technology is that it facilitates in the reduction of such gaps,” he says.

The process involves distributing particularly designed suitcases which enable live interactive video conferencing between health centers and specialists at Oshen King Faisal Hospital. The suitcases also contains key biomedical equipment. Beyond the reduction of costs and time, the initiative serves to pass on skills to nurses in remote health centers. By working with the specialists during the consultation, the nurses get insights to approaches of dealing with various ailments including outbreaks. The technology serves to increase the efficiency of the referral system, in that specialists can begin intervention of complex cases early enough before patients’ conditions worsen. The approach is expected to lead reduction of crowding of referral facilities as complex cases can be handled early enough within the health facilities. The first phase currently involves four health centers and has provisions of data collection which will inform implementation and uptake of the approach across the country. However, Dr. Kalimba and his team say that the approach is scalable to spread benefits across the country as well as incorporate other stakeholders. “Going forward, we believe that the platform and initiative can work without the context of public health insurance as well as private insurance,” he says. Kalimba notes that the involvement of other health facilities and players would go a long way towards reducing gaps in pediatric care. So far, the initiative has received positive reception from nurses and health centers with most of them terming it as a welcome intervention and relief in provision of pediatric care in the country. Oshen King Faisal Hospital works with world renowned facilities across the world to build necessary capacity in the field to ensure that they are up to date with the latest skills and trends.

The Telepediatrics Suitcase is a specifically designed case enabling the capture and the transmission of children’s’ vital data to perform a medical diagnosis from anywhere in the world and in any circumstances. The Project of Telepediatrics is an initiative of Oshen King Faisal Hospital and Sphera Global Health Care and framed in a strategy of networking -integrating medicine, IT systems and data - with the collaboration of providers, physicians, payers and patients with the aim to improve the patient experience while decreasing the cost of care provision.

In this interview, Trezer Oguda finds out more about her art and how her African roots have, over time, inspired her work in the fashion industry and humanitarian world.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF. My name is Adele Dejak. I was born and raised in Nigeria. My mother is Nigerian, and my father is British. Growing up I was the weird one; the arty-farty one. I have always loved art, fashion and design. I knew I eventually wanted to end in that space, and I did!

HOW DID THE BRAND ADELE DEJAK COME TO BE?

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GO WITH YOUR OWN NAME FOR THE BUSINESS?

I studied typographic design in England and Italy before moving to Nairobi, Kenya in 2005. It was then that I turned my attention to accessories design. I was captivated by the natural beauty of the horn and began experimenting with it, creating chic, original pieces. I caught the eye of an admirer who was amazed at my handiwork and encouraged me to set up shop. My Nigerian roots merged easily with my European influences and with time I have produced several celebrated collections that make up the brand you have all come to know and love.

I initially started with Magik Grace, named after my mother. With time, as the aesthetic of the brand began to change to suit the African luxury market, I chose my name because I am represented in every single piece you see from my collections. I am Africa and Africa is in me. HOW DID YOUR BACKGROUND AND UPBRINGING INFLUENCE THE STYLE OF THE PIECES? My African background has a lot to do with the brand and is the inspiration behind a lot of the collections. Growing up, my maternal

Discovering different tribes from all over Africa gave me so many ideas! I always stress that African culture is rich; somewhat magical and irresistibly unique. I work towards maintaining the clean, simple and sophisticated look and feel our brand is known for, while exploring the possibilities of new designs. The pieces are also influenced by love. Simply love. INTERESTING. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AFRICA IN THREE WORDS? Africa is PASSION. Africa is LOVE. Africa is RISING. WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE FOR YOUR WORK? WHY? I use plasticine to mould my ideas into small creations, more like the first draft. I then use recycled brass and aluminium for ethical and sustainability purposes. They also produce beautiful pieces! I use horn and hide because of the raw authentic African feel they represent. Historically, they were the go-to pieces for adornment in many African societies and I like showing them off in new light. WHO ARE YOUR PIECES MADE FOR? The sophisticated, confident and unapologetically unique modern woman.

J’ai étudié le design typographique en Angleterre et en Italie avant de déménager à Nairobi au Kenya en 2005. C’était à ce moment que mon attention s’est tournée vers la conception d’accessoires. J’étais captivée par la beauté naturelle des cornes et j’ai commencé à expérimenter cela, en créant de pièces chiques et originales. Mon travail a retenu l’attention d’un admirateur qui a été impressionné par mes œuvres et m’a encouragé à me lancer. Artisanal work takes time and effort from the artist. They need to ensure the quality of their product is up to standard and the customer needs to recognize this effort and become more willing to pay extra for it.

I am honoured to be part of UN’s initiative to work with refugees and artisans. Working with women in Kakuma Camp in Kenya was fulfilling. Knowing that I helped someone nurture their talent and use it to feed and educate their families is more than words can explain. My most recent partnership with UNHCR seeks to help refugees harness their skills for their own

Mes origines africaines ont beaucoup à voir avec la marque et l’inspiration derrière un grand nombre des collections. En grandissant, ma grand-mère maternelle et moi avons établi un lien au travers des ornements traditionnels, étant donné que je ne parlais pas bien la langue. Dès le départ, je me suis inspirée de l’héritage et de la riche culture africaine traditionnelle que j’ai interprétée de manière contemporaine. Savoir que j’ai pu aider quelqu’un à cultiver son talent et à l’utiliser pour nourrir et éduquer sa famille, cela représente plus que les mots ne pourraient le dire. Mon plus récent partenariat avec l’ONU-HCR a pour objectif d’aider les réfugiés à exploiter leurs compétences pour leur propre progression. Nous voulons pouvoir donner aux réfugiés une activité permettant de subvenir à leurs besoins de manière durable, tout en aidant à maintenir les traditions culturelles. Africans have been weaving and decorating textile since ancient times. Initially, to wrap the cloth around their bodies to keep warm and protected, but people wouldn’t be people if they didn’t start using fabric for creative expression, to show their love, faith, wealth or status or to commemorate important events. Over time, African weaving has become a form of art and communication and the traditionally produced textiles are now used in fashion, home furnishings and for wall decoration. By Ilse Lasschuijt

Weaving methods and decoration patterns vary greatly within the continent. Fabrics can be made of cotton, silk, raffia or bast fibers and in some inland regions even wool. Dye or paint can be made from soil, greens, fruits, or bark, mixed with water or chemicals to obtain the perfect color. Cloths can be decorated by stamping, (tie)-dyeing, painting, or embroidery. Let’s take a look at some of the more famous fabrics.

KITENGE The term ‘African print’ is often associated with the wax print textile called kitenge, in East Africa and ankara in West Africa. This cotton fabric in vibrant colors and bold pattern has many uses in African daily life as clothing, scarfs, home decorations or everyday utensils and toys. The batik wax technique was originally brought from Java to West Africa in the 19th century by the Dutch Vlisco company, who introduced a new technique using roller prints. The Asian market didn’t care for these machinemade, brighter, graphic designs of wax print, but Vlisco found an enthusiastic market for it in West Africa, From West Africa, the fabric spread to other parts of the continent and the designs evolved over time into the distinctly African prints we encounter today. The colors, patterns and symbols of kitenge designs communicate feelings, commemorate historical events or are named after famous people. The beauty of wax printing is that each piece is unique. One can never make an exact copy of a piece of kitenge.

KITENGE Le terme « imprimé africain » est souvent associé au textile wax appelé kitenge, en Afrique de l’Est et ankara en Afrique de l’Ouest. Ce tissu en coton aux couleurs éclatantes et aux motifs audacieux a de nombreuses utilisations dans la vie quotidienne africaine, telle que des vêtements, des écharpes, de la décoration d’intérieur ou des ustensiles et des jouets de tous les jours. La technique de cire batique fut à l’origine importée de Java en Afrique de l’Ouest au XIXe siècle par la société hollandaise Vlisco, qui a introduit une nouvelle technique utilisant des impressions au rouleau. Le marché asiatique ne voulait pas de ces imprimés wax fabriqués à la machine, plus éclatants, aux motifs plus graphiques, mais Vlisco a trouvé un marché plus réceptif en Afrique de l’Ouest. À partir de l’Afrique de l’Ouest, le tissu s’est répandu sur le reste du continent et les motifs ont évolué dans le temps pour devenir les motifs typiquement africains que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. Les couleurs, motifs et symboles des designs kitenge communiquent des sentiments, des évènements historiques ou portent le nom de personnes célèbres. La beauté des imprimés wax est que chaque pièce est unique. On ne peut jamais faire une copie exacte d’un morceau de kitenge.

Kente cloth

KENTE Kente cloth is Ghana’s national fabric and it remains popular among the ethnic Akan people across West Africa. The Akan call it nwentoma, woven cloth, and it is produced by strip weaving a mixture of silk and cotton yarn and stitching them together. The strip weaving technique can be traced back to the 11th century in West Africa. Kente cloth has distinct multi-colored patterns in geometric shapes. It was and still is the cloth of kings and in the olden days, gold thread would be incorporated to create lavish attires for Ashante royalty. Hand-woven kente cloth is used for festive dress on special occasions. Each cloth design tells a story, about a person or an event. There are cloths named after historical events, like Queen Elizabeth’s visit in 1961, or natural phenomena such as a rainbow or a rising sun. Every new kente design is registered and copyrighted for protection. Colors and patterns hold significant meaning as well. Colors reflect concepts like wealth (gold), love (blue) or purity (silver). Black represents spiritual energy and aging while white reflects purity. Among the Ewe and Ashante, black and white kente cloth are worn to funerals to celebrate life and mourn death.

C’était et c’est toujours le tissu des rois, et à l’époque, des fils d’or y étaient incorporés pour créer de somptueuses tenues pour la famille royale Ashanti. Le tissu kente tissé à la main est utilisé pour les vêtements destinés aux occasions spéciales. Chaque tissu raconte une histoire à propos d’une personne ou d’un évènement. Il existe des tissus portant le nom d’évènements historiques tels que la visite de la Reine Elizabeth en 1961, ou des phénomènes naturels tels qu’un arc-en-ciel ou le soleil levant. Chaque nouveau design kente est enregistré et protégé par un droit d’auteur. Les couleurs et motifs ont également une signification particulière. Les couleurs reflètent des concepts tels que la richesse (or), l’amour (bleu) ou la pureté (argent). Le noir représente l’énergie spirituelle et le vieillissement, et le blanc la pureté. Chez les Ewes et les Ashantis, le tissu kente noir et blanc se porte lors des enterrements pour célébrer la vie et pleurer la mort.

BOGOLAN Bogolan or ‘mud cloth’ is a hand-woven cotton textile from Mali, traditionally dyed with fermented mud in a bold geometric earth-toned patterns. It is important in traditional Malian culture. The best-known version of bogolan is associated with the Bambara people and the center of bogolan production is in the town of San. The making of bogolan requires technical knowledge and mastery of the cloth's many symbols. Strips of cotton are woven on narrow looms and stitched together. The cloth is then soaked in a dye bath from mashed leaves of the n’gallama tree, an African birch, which gives it a yellow hue. When it is dry, the cloth is painted with mud that has been fermented for many months and which creates a chemical reaction with the treated cloth leaving a brownish color. To outline the pattern and to obtain a rich brown color, this process has to be repeated many times. After decoration, the cloth is washed to remove the yellow and brighten the background while the brown decorations remain. In traditional Malian culture the bogolan cloth is thought to have the power to fend off dangerous forces. Bogolan tunics were worn by Bamana hunters as camouflage and to protect them, and women wore the cloth for ritual protection, when they reached adulthood or after they gave birth. Bogolan cloth has become a symbol of Malian cultural identity and is being promoted as such by the Malian government. Today it is popular with young people as a fashion statement or to express their national identity as a Malian.

BOGOLAN Le Bogolan ou « tissu de boue » est un textile en coton provenant du Mali, traditionnellement teint avec de la boue fermentée aux audacieux motifs géométriques dans les tons terreux. Il est très important dans la culture malienne. La version la plus connue du bogolan est associée au peuple Bambara, et au coeur de la production du bogolan se trouve la ville de San. La création du bogolan nécessite des compétences techniques et une maîtrise de nombreux symboles du tissu. Des bandes de cotons sont tissées sur d’étroits métiers à tisser et sont ensuite assemblées et cousues. Le tissu est ensuite trempé dans un bain de teinture à base de feuilles écrasées de l’arbre n’gallama, un bouleau africain, qui lui donne une teinte jaune. Lorsqu’il est sec, le tissu est peint avec de la boue fermentée pendant plusieurs mois ce qui crée une réaction chimique avec le tissu traité, laissant une couleur brunâtre. Pour souligner les motifs et obtenir une riche couleur brune, ce processus doit être répété de nombreuses fois. Après avoir été décoré, le tissu est lavé pour supprimer le jaune et éclaircir la couleur de fond, alors que les décorations brunes restent. Dans la culture traditionnelle malienne, on raconte que le bogolan a le pouvoir de repousser les forces dangereuses. Les chasseurs Bamana portaient des tuniques bogolan comme tenue de camouflage et pour se protéger, et les femmes portaient le tissu pour leur protection rituelle, lorsqu’elles atteignaient l’âge adulte ou après avoir donné naissance. Le tissu bogolan est devenu un symbole de l’identité culturelle malienne et est promu en tant que tel par le gouvernement malien. Aujourd’hui il est très populaire chez les jeunes qui souhaitent affirmer leur style vestimentaire ou exprimer leur identité nationale malienne.

KUBA Le peuple Kuba de la République Démocratique du Congo est le peuple maître des arts. Le Royaume Kuba a prospéré au cours du XVIIe siècle lorsque de riches mécènes soutenaient les arts et la mode, et que les artisans créaient des masques sophistiqués, des statues et le désormais célèbre tissu Kuba. Le tissu kuba est un textile raffiné très étroitement tissé en utilisant des fils de feuilles de raphia en magnifiques motifs géométriques. C’est un processus de production complexe qui implique la participation de toute la famille. Une fois que le textile est tissé, il est brodé à l’aide de fils de raphia teints pour créer des motifs rectangulaires, des lignes, des courbes et des cercles. Les motifs portent des noms, et se transmettent de génération en génération, mais il y a tout de même de la place pour la créativité artistique individuelle. Les techniques d’appliqué et de patchwork sont parfois utilisées, et, comme le tissu brodé, elles varient en terme de complexité et de style. Le tissu Kuba est traditionnellement utilisé pour des jupes cérémoniales enroulées autour de la taille de nombreuses fois. Mais de nos jours le textile est également utilisé pour des décorations murales, des taies d’oreiller ou des matelas pour s’asseoir ou dormir.

KUBA The Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are masters of the arts. The Kuba kingdom flourished in the 17tC when wealthy patrons supported arts and fashion and artisans started creating sophisticated masks, statues and the now famous Kuba cloth. Kuba cloth is an exquisite textile that is tightly woven using strands from raffia palm leaves in beautiful geometric patterns. It is a complex production involving the participation of the whole family. Once the cloth is woven, it is embroidered with dyed raffia threads to create patterns with rectangles, lines, curves and circles. The patterns have names and are passed down from generation to generation, but there is plenty of room for individual artistry. Sometimes applique and patchwork are used, which like the embroidered cloth, range in complexity and style. Kuba cloth is traditionally used for ceremonial skirts that are wrapped around the waist in many layers. But nowadays, the textile is also used for wall hangings, pillow cases or mats for sitting and sleeping.

Early childhood education is often underrated. Studies show that children taught at early ages benefit through better educational growth, better social skills and good behavioral performance. The Early Childhood (EC) campus of the International School of Kigali Rwanda (ISKR), provides students with an environment that is stimulating, culturally diverse, welcoming, and friendly. The Dutch parents Anne Toussaint and Brian Tabben moved to Rwanda in 2015 with their three children and intentionally transferred them to ISKR in September 2018. Their youngest child, Eysha, attends EC. When Eysha first arrived at ISKR, her parents were concerned about her interaction with other students, as she lacked proficiency in English. Eysha received a warm welcome from her peers and teachers, who all respected her cultural background, making her integration easy. The EC campus has a spacious villa and beautiful landscape, equipped as to enable children to develop through play, sports and gardening. ISKR focuses not only on academics, but also emphasizes the arts: painting, drawing, and drama, which unleash students’ creativity. The school encourages students to develop curious minds and challenges them to think innovatively, enabling each student to develop according to individual wants, strengths, and needs. Students also use technology to advance their knowledge about connecting with the rest of the world. The school uses online apps to share

student work with parents, which helps parents understand their child’s perspective and thinking. One added value for Eysha is that at ISKR she is able to learn her mother tongue while attending Dutch classes at “Het Nest”. While her children study at ISKR, Mrs. Toussaint hopes they will grow to become responsible global citizens. To this end, the school offers the inquiry-based International Early Years Curriculum coupled with Montessori teaching methods. Mrs. Toussaint has been working for more than 15 years in the area of child protection and child rights in various developing countries and has seen the results of a lack of early childhood education in her work. Free movement of Persons in Africa “The free movement of persons, capital, goods and services will promote integration, PanAfricanism, enhance science, technology, education, research and foster tourism, facilitate intra-Africa trade and investment, increase remittances within Africa, promote mobility of labour, create employment, improve the standards of living of the people of Africa and facilitate the mobilization and utilization of the human and material resources of Africa in order to achieve selfreliance and development” Agenda 2063 which is the blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future, is founded on the African Union (AU) Vision of “An Integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the International arena.” The vision of an integrated Africa calls for not just economic integration, but the integration of Africa’s people by breaking down the invisible and physical barriers which have limited the movement of people and by result weakened the spirit of panAfricanism. In addition, these barriers have prevented the growth of a knowledge and skills sharing economy which is vital for the advancement of any society. The reasons for these barriers are wide and varied and include security concerns, socio-economic disparities and fear of health epidemics. However, Africa’s fast growing educated middle class along with a growing youth population is a reminder of the potential of the continent if these demographic changes are harnessed and opportunities created to enable nation states to tap into the human capital through the socio-economic integration required to harness the continent’s vast resources for the benefit of its people. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 identifies free movement of persons as a key ingredient for achieving other development

aspirations. Free movement of persons in Africa is expected to deliver several key benefits including: • Boosting intra-Africa trade, commerce and tourism; • Facilitating labour mobility, intra-Africa knowledge and skills transfer • Promoting pan-African identity, social integration and tourism; • Improving trans-border infrastructure and shared development. • Fostering a comprehensive approach to border management; • Promoting rule of law, human rights, and public health In addition, the infrastructure needed to support the mobility of Africans will also serve other economic, technological, security and healthrelated purposes within the overall integration and development plans for Africa. Increased movement of people, goods and services across borders will inevitably incentivise better infrastructural linkages and connections among African countries. To address the issue of the integration of Africa’s citizens, Agenda 2063 identified as one of its flagship initiatives, the African Passport and Free movement of People which aims to remove the restrictions on Africans ability to travel, work and live within their own continent. The initiative aims at transforming Africa’s laws, which remain generally restrictive on movement of people despite political commitments to bring down borders with a view to promoting the issuance of visas by Member States to enhance free movement of all African citizens in all African countries. The African Union Protocol on Free Movement of Persons The Protocol to the treaty establishing the African Economic Community relating to free movement of persons envisages three specific rights: Right of Entry; Right of Establishment and Right of Residence. (Visit www.au.int for the detailed protocol) A brief outline of these rights are summarised below.

Right of Entry: Nationals of AU Member States shall have the right to enter, stay, move freely and exit the territory of another Member State in accordance with the laws, regulations and procedures of the host Member State. African nationals will be granted entry without the requirement of a visa. Nationals will be permitted to move freely or stay for a maximum period of ninety (90) days from the date of entry or such further period determined by Member States or through bilateral or regional arrangements. A national of a Member State who wishes to stay beyond the period provided shall seek an extension of stay in accordance with the procedures established by the host Member State. Right of Residence: Nationals of a Member State shall have the right of residence in the territory of any Member State in accordance with the laws of the host Member State. Right of Establishment: Nationals of a Member State shall have the right of establishment within the territory of another Member State in accordance with the laws and policies of the host Member State. The right of establishment shall include the right to set up in the territory of the host Member State: (i) a business, trade, profession, vocation; or (ii) an economic activity as a self-employed person. During the Extraordinary Summit on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) held in Kigali Rwanda in March 2018, 30 of the 55 member states of the African Union signed the Free Movement Protocol. The African Passport During the July 2016 AU Summit in Kigali, the Assembly officially launched the common, electronic, biometric African passport, that would facilitate free movement of persons across Africa. In July 2018, Chiefs of Immigration from African Union Member States met in Nairobi, Kenya to review the draft guidelines for the design, production and issuance of the African Passport. The Continental Free Trade Area: A game changer for Africa

Currently under negotiation, the African Union’s African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will create a single market for goods and services across the continent, bringing benefits for businesses and consumers and strengthening Africa’s position in world trade.

The Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a flagship project of Agenda 2063 and refers to a continental geographic zone where goods and services move among member states of the African Union (AU) with no restrictions. The AfCFTA aims to boost intra-African trade by providing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade agreement among the member states, covering trade in goods and services, investment, intellectual property rights and competition policy. This is an urgent issue because countries across the world are concluding mega-regional trade agreements (MRTAs), thus reshaping and changing the global trading landscape. The establishment of the AfCFTA will allow Africa to strengthen its position vis-à-vis the rest of the world, speak with one voice and act in unison on all continental and international trade issues. The AfCFTA will create a wider market of more than 1.2bn people with a combined GDP of $2.19 trillion. This will induce investments, result in the pooling of African resources to enhance structural transformation and the development of regional value chains. The benefits to Africa will include: • boosting employment opportunities • increased food security through reduction to barriers on trade in agricultural products • increased competitiveness of African industrial products through harnessing the economies of scale of a continent-wide market • increased rate of diversification and transformation of Africa’s economy and the continent’s ability to supply its import needs from its own resources • better allocation of resources, improved competition and reduced price differentials • growth of intra-industry trade through regional value chains and development of geographically based specialisation • reduced vulnerability of countries to external trade shocks by reducing the trade balance deficits of African countries • enhanced participation of Africa in global trade and reduced dependency on aid and external borrowing.

By taking into consideration the need to develop Africa’s productive capacity and industrial integration, the AfCFTA will provide an enabling environment where businesses can build efficient regional supply chains and encourage intraindustry trade, thereby promoting investment, growth and the creation of jobs. The private sector and SMEs will benefit through the implementation of trade facilitation measures to boost speed and reduce the cost of customs procedures and port handling. This will increase cross-border trade and investments, thus enhancing market access for goods and services produced in Africa. The AfCFTA will also promote innovation and enterprise through protection of the intellectual property rights of the African private sector. Consumers will benefit too. The AfCFTA will create a competitive environment with lower prices and a wider variety of goods and services. The AfCFTA will also ensure the maintenance of quality standards to safeguard the health and safety of consumers. Measures will be taken to allow the least developed countries to compete with the more developed countries. Flexibility will be accorded to member states that have special trade needs, specificities and circumstances. Special and differential treatment will apply in transitional periods for liberalisation. Exemptions and other measures within the scope of the AfCFTA agreement are being conducted by AU member states through the AfCFTA-negotiating institutions with the support of the African Union Commission and Regional Economic Communities (RECs). After conclusion of AfCFTA negotiations, the AfCFTA agreement will be signed and will enter into force after ratification by 15 member states of the AU. The city hosts two major annual art fairs and weekly art openings from the upscale gallery neighbourhoods of Parktown and Rosebank to the artists’ studios in Maboneng and Newton. And the city is jampacked with sensational graffiti and street art. Many young artists made their name on the street, before their talent landed them a place in a gallery.

STREET ART In the areas downtown, Newtown, Jeppestown or Maboneng, concrete walls are brightened with big, creative murals and characters. Graffiti is part of hip-hop culture and was born during the late 1970s in the predominantly black and Latino boroughs of New York City. In South Africa, the trend emerged in the dying days of the apartheid era. Nowadays, people come to Joburg to see the scene and there are even tours. Gogga and Falko are some of South Africa’s bestknown graffiti artists and they have inspired new generations of artists. Mars, Myza420, Rasty, and Tyke are some of the talented artists who now make their mark on the streets and are sought after by galleries. Two major street art festivals take place in the city every year. Hip hop festival “Back to the city” in Newton has live graffiti performances by major artists and the next edition takes place on 29th April 2019. Urban art festival ‘City of Gold” attracts local and international artists to produce large scale works. This festival usually takes place in October. ARTS ON MAIN The Maboneng precinct merges commercial and residential property with artists’ studios and concept retail spaces. As a result, the area has blossomed into an arts mecca. In the block around, Main St and Fox St you will find street-side cafés and restaurants, hotels and trendy shops. Celebrated artist William Kentridge has his print studio here and his work is sold through David Krut Projects. Every Sunday, the Arts on Main event offers food markets, live music, street art and the opportunity to browse artists’ galleries and studios, such as Hazard gallery or the Gavin Project, which offers local talent a space to show their work. KEYES ART MILE Many reputable galleries exhibiting contemporary art can be found lined along Jan Smuts avenue and its side streets in Rosebank. To name a few: Joburg’s oldest gallery Everard Read and its ‘sister’ Circa on Jellicoe, which explores art, technology and architecture. Galleries with a strong name in social critique like Gallery Momo and the Goodman Gallery, which has a stellar stable of local and international artists. The Keyes Art Mile also hosts a number of smaller art galleries, design and architecture. Check out the iconic Trumpet building for design and furniture items. Every first Thursday of the month, the

the new motorsport in Rwanda Rwanda, home to 6 annual car rallies, just added a line-up of events for motorsports enthusiasts. The Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC), the national association and a member of the International Automobile Federation or Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), will host kart racing, cross-car and virtual rally events on a regular basis in 2019. With monthly races open to the public, kart racing will be the new discipline showcased by RAC. The launch of kart racing in Rwanda received the support of FIA to encourage youth to develop interest in and pursue motorsports from an early age. By Davy-Carmel Ingabire

“In 2019 we are going to start by raising awareness through monthly activities which will be open to the public on a registration basis. We currently have tracks set up in the car park of the Radisson Blu at the Kigali Convention Centre, but we will also switch venues once in a while. All the announcements will be made on twitter via our handle @motorsportrw,” said Christian Gakwaya, president of the national automobile club. “We want to invest in the future of any motorsport actor who could potentially compete at an international level. This is the reason we started virtual rally competitions which are similar to a high-level video game, where children from age four can participate, given that they able to demonstrate specific aptitudes. By the time they are 8 years old they will be able to start kart racing in the appropriate sub-category, with the opportunity to advance through the levels from ages 14 to 17. Once they are old enough to get their driving licence, they can start competing in rally competitions. Some of the greatest Formula 1 champions like Lewis Hamilton got their start with kart racing,” said Gakwaya. The initiative was launched by RAC at the end of an international conference which attracted participants from 19 African countries and in the presence of the President of FIA, Jean Todt. There are currently 10 karts available in Rwanda, to which 15 more will be added next year. The calendar of upcoming events announced during the launch was welcomed enthusiastically by the public, providing incentive for RAC to drive their initiative further. Year one will focus on promoting the sport and attracting as many people for the monthly races, and from year two onwards, a professional championship will be launched with annual licences and points earned at each stage. This will be coupled with an amateur championship for individuals or organisations who wish to compete in a friendly championship. RAC being a not-for-profit organisation will also look for business partners to help develop the professional championship into a notable event.

Karting, un nouveau sport automobile au Rwanda « C’est un espoir de voir de futures stars des sports automobiles en provenance du Rwanda » dit Christian Gakwaya, président du Rwanda Automobile Club à propos du Karting. Alors que le Rwanda compte déjà six rallyes par an, un nouveaux rendez-vous ou plutôt plusieurs s’annoncent pour les amateurs de sports automobiles. Le Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC) qui est l’association sportive nationale dépendant de la Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) lance le karting, le cross-car et le rallye virtuel de manière régulière en 2019.

Le karting sera la nouvelle discipline mise en avant par le RAC avec des courses organisées une fois par mois et ouvertes au grand public. « En 2019, nous voulons d’abord faire connaitre le karting au grand public donc nous aurons des activités chaque mois auxquelles tout le monde pourra participer en s’inscrivant, c’est ouvert à tout le monde à partir de l’âge de 8ans. They say that the best entrepreneurs are those who can analyse their entourage, figure out the gaps in their surroundings and find a way to fill them with a mix of skill, talent and ability.

Julien Rutamu is a private butler, a surprising and unexpected job in an African country. “Looking after one’s family is becoming increasingly difficult these days as it is now common practice for both parents to work. This means that any additional task like organizing the house or preparing dinner for friends or a party for the children can become a challenge. That’s where I enter the picture,” explained Julien. He studied hotel management in Belgium, his former home, and has been a chef for 17 years.

When I met him, I was excited to hear more about the butler business. I was trying to recall what a butler actually does, but my mind kept bringing me back to the famous movie The Butler, starring Forest Whitaker and based on the true story of a black butler at the White House who went unnoticed for years and was finally honoured by President Barack Obama for his services. Julien had a big smile on his face when I met him, he had a warm presence which is a necessary quality when you are at the service of people full-time. IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE TO MEET YOU, COULD YOU START BY TELLING US WHAT A BUTLER DOES? My work is about making my clients’ lives easier. It is basically based on listening to a person, understanding their wishes and making them happen. I offer an additional service which is running the kitchen as I am a trained chef. And beyond the kitchen, it is about organizing the house, from the bedrooms to the bathrooms, grocery shopping and planning small and big parties, etc. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PATH? I have always been familiar with this type of work; my mother was a cook and she had a restaurant. She loved people, she enjoyed life and worked for a long time in the hotel industry. I was fortunate to study hotel management while I lived in Belgium. During my training I learned about service, cooking, managing a hotel and hospitality staff. I even got to intern which allowed me to learn on the job, to understand how things work in a kitchen, in a hotel and in a restaurant. I dabbled in waiting tables and washing dishes. In short, I went through all the ranks before I became a cook. I also got an opportunity to work in catering where the work hours are endless; that experience helped me develop stamina. In my line of work, as we say, work happens while other people are having fun. But I love this job so much that I end up having fun too. YOU HAVE BEEN BACK IN RWANDA FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, WHAT MADE YOU REALIZE THAT BEING A BUTLER COULD WORK IN THIS CONTEXT? With the spectacular evolution our country is undergoing, the needs of some people went from very basic to a list of random but important items such as how to get a nice flower arrangement on a whim for tonight’s dinner or where to find good ironing products. This shift tells us that people are now ready for professionals like us who are well versed in these 56

Elle aimait les gens, elle était très vivante et a travaillé pendant très longtemps dans l’hospitalité. J’¬¬ai ensuite eu la chance de faire des études en gestion hôtelière quand je vivais en Belgique, cette formation vous apprend à servir, à cuisiner, à gérer un hôtel, à gérer un personnel. J’ai fait ca pendant 5ans et parallèlement aux études, on faisait des petits stages qui nous ont permis d’apprendre le métier sur le terrain pour comprendre comment ca se passe dans une cuisine, dans un hôtel et dans un restaurant ; donc j’ai été serveur, j’ai fait la plonge, je suis passé par tous les échelons avant d’être cuisinier et j’ai eu la chance de travailler avec des traiteurs et là les heures de travail sont interminables, ca apprend la persévérance. For this is all anything is about. Power to decide who is to live, who is to die, she reasons. When a German acquaintance asks Sissie her name, she tells her she can call her by her Christian name Mary—a ladylike name suited for school and the office (foreign concepts)—thus illustrating the expurgation of African identity by Western missionaries. Historical accounts abound with Africans being barred from mission schools until they dropped Gitonga, Chinedu and Efua for George, Caty and Elizabeth. Case in point, before Mandela was Nelson, he was Rolihlahla until his white teacher decided otherwise. For her part, Sissie mockingly explains that Mary pleases the White God’s and his angels, who “take roll-calls in Latin” and would rather not twist “their delicate tongues around names like Gyaemehara.” To be sure, Sissie doesn’t let Africans get off lightly for debasing the continent either. She censures “Champagne sipping ministers and commissioners sign[ing] away mineral and timber concessions” as well as corrupt African presidents—some of whom prefer governing from Europe— for perpetuating the destruction wrought by colonialism. The book’s final chapter, written as a love letter, addresses brain drain, another pertinent African issue. A frustrated Sissie takes on poor Africans in Europe who mask the reality of their miserable working lives from their family back home, making them believe they can cater to their incessant requests. Her animus, however, is reserved for government sponsored graduates who prefer to rail against the problems

Publié en 1977, et écrit sous forme de poème en prose, l’histoire est racontée du point de vue de Sissie, une femme ghanéenne qui est acceptée dans un programme académique en Allemagne pour travailler dans une pépinière de pins. Au travers de ses observations personnelles et de ses conversations, elle délivre un discours sarcastique et plein d’humour sur une kyrielle de sujets, de l’idée victorienne que les femmes fortes et franches manquent de classe, au complexe du sauveur blanc. À son arrivée à Francfort, Sissie est confrontée au concept de race pour la première fois après qu’une jeune fille allemande l’appelle « la noire ». Confuse, elle se retourne et réalise que tout le monde autour d’elle est blanc, et même si elle considère que la présence, ou plutôt l’absence, de mélanine est sans conséquence, elle admet que de telles différences ont constitué la base de l’apartheid en Afrique du Sud, le commerce transatlantique des esclaves et le colonialisme. « …puisque c’est autour de cela que tout tourne. Elle condamne « Les ministres et commissaires sirotant leur champagne et approuvant des concessions minières et forestières » ainsi que les présidents africains corrompus - certains d’entre eux préférant gouverner d’Europe - pour continuer à perpétuer la destruction provoquée par la colonisation.

Il exprime la préoccupation de nombreux africains éduqués de la diaspora : le manque d’un environnement de travail propice. « … équiper un établissement de recherche de premier ordre pour mon travail absorberait le budget complet du ministère de la santé, » dit-il. Même si Sissie accepte son point de vue à contrecœur, elle essaye, mais ne parvient pas, à lui faire adhérer à l’idée d’une Afrique meilleure. Our Sister Killjoy est une analyse virulente de la relation malsaine et inégale entre l’Afrique et l’Occident. Chaque page ébranle les chaînes qui continuent d’empêcher l’Afrique de réaliser toute sa grandeur, exposant la tyrannie de ses dirigeants cupides, sans vision et le parasitisme des puissances étrangères intéressées.

Given that most of us spend at least eight hours (and we have not even counted the time spent in traffic or commuting) labouring and breaking our backs for sustenance, it is imperative that we find ways to balance the scales. How? Khangai Odima, a humanitarian, lets us in on her way; capitalizing on the work trips.

My name is Khangai Odima I am a humanitarian and travel enthusiast.

Have you always loved traveling? Yes, as far back as I can remember! I was born into a family of travellers with both my parents being enthusiastic vacationers. Our family culture models a love of travelling and chasing wanderlust. I can say that I also caught the bug from my elder sister, who demonstrated travelling the world to me. The rest, as they say, is history! WHAT IS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF TRAVELING EITHER ALONE OR WITH FAMILY? Travelling to my grandma’s place, which is over 500 kilometres from Nairobi. Growing up, we made the journey - which entailed crossing over 5 provinces to get there- once or twice a year. We learnt to appreciate the beauty of the scenery along the journey such as: Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Lake Elementaita, Lake Victoria, Mount Longonot, the Great Rift Valley, among others. HAS YOUR LOVE OF TRAVELING PLAYED A ROLE IN THE KIND OF WORK YOU SEEK? To be sure, I cannot recall which came first, the chicken or the egg? (laughs) I knew from early on in life that the call to serve humanity would go beyond my birthplace, Kenya, and the continent of Africa. I have been working in the non-profit sector for a few years now, which has given me the privilege of travelling to different parts of Kenya and beyond. I am grateful for my job because I get to serve humanity and travel at the same time. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF TRAVELING FOR WORK? I think it is a classic example of purpose meeting passion. Work travel allows for cross learning within new networks as well as broadening my perspective on how I can improve my work. In the end it is always a win-win situation and a mission accomplished. The only downside is that I do not get to take my family with me on these exciting trips. HOW DOES WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING RELATE TO YOUR DESIRE TO TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD? I work in a sector that seeks to alleviate human suffering globally. While many strides have been made, the world is still so far from achieving this in entirety. I want to go to Yemen or Syria and be there for the children affected by conflict and continuous air strikes. I want to travel to Bangladesh and work for refugees who have had to run for their lives, fleeing marginalization in Myanmar. I want to go and provide aid in Libya, where many children are risking their lives crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of peace and a brighter future across the sea. I wish I could be a voice for these children. I will only achieve this by travelling to these places and experiencing their

Étant donné que la plupart d’entre nous passent au moins huit heures (sans compter le temps passé dans les transports) à travailler dur, et à se briser les reins pour gagner sa vie, il est donc impératif de trouver une façon de rééquilibrer la balance. Comment ? Khangai Odima, une humanitaire, partage avec nous sa façon de faire, en profitant de ses déplacements professionnels. AVEZ-VOUS TOUJOURS AIMÉ VOYAGER ? Oui, aussi loin que je me souvienne ! Je suis née dans une famille de voyageurs, mes deux parents étant d’avides vacanciers. Notre culture familiale tourne autour de l’amour du voyage et des envies de voyages. Je peux dire que je tiens également cela de ma grande sœur, qui m’a montré comment voyager. Le reste, comme on dit, appartient à l’histoire ! QUEL EST VOTRE PREMIER SOUVENIR DE VOYAGE SEULE OU EN FAMILLE ? Le voyage vers chez ma grand-mère, à plus de 500km de Nairobi. En grandissant, nous faisions ce voyage qui impliquait la traversée de 5 provinces - une ou deux fois par an. Nous avons appris à apprécier la beauté du paysage le long du chemin, comme par exemple le Lac Nakuru, le Lac Naivasha, le Lac Elementaita, le Lac Victoria, le Mont Longono, la Grande Vallée du Rift entre autres. VOTRE AMOUR DU VOYAGE A-T-IL JOUÉ UN RÔLE DANS LE TYPE DE TRAVAIL QUE VOUS RECHERCHEZ ? Je ne me souviens pas de ce qui est venu en premier, la poule ou l’oeuf (rires). Je savais depuis que j’étais très jeune que l’appel à servir l’humanité m’amènerais au delà de mon lieu de naissance, le Kenya, et du continent Africain. Je travaille dans le secteur non-lucratif depuis quelques années maintenant, ce qui m’a donné le privilège de voyager dans différentes parties du Kenya et au delà. Je suis très reconnaissante pour mon travail puisque j’ai l’occasion de servir l’humanité et de voyager

en même temps. suffering and speaking on their behalf. So help me God! WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU HAVE LEARNT ABOUT PEOPLE, PLACES, THINGS...? People are diverse; in the differences there lies beauty. Places are unique; uniqueness brings new things to the table. Things come and go, but memories last a lifetime. YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TRIP SO FAR? My trip to Bamako, Mali in April 2018. The desert country has so much to offer: a rich history, a hospitable population and a promising future. I made some of the most solid friendships of my adulthood while in Bamako! I partied at night with temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius and toured the city during the day in their old yellow Benz taxis. I also spoke more French in those two weeks than I have spoken in years. It was unforgettable! WHAT IS IT ABOUT TRAVELING AROUND THE WORLD THAT MAKES YOU CHASE WANDERLUST? I am a very spontaneous person. I appreciate new experiences, discovering new places, interacting with new cultures and meeting new people. I know this sounds very generic, but I live for these things. I am also an outdoor person, so I guess chasing wanderlust comes naturally to me. I am just getting started, I still have so many destinations I am yet to cross off my bucket list. SPEAKING OF BUCKET LISTS, WHICH TRAVEL DESTINATIONS HAVE MADE THE CUT FOR 2019? A trip to Rusinga Island, Lake Victoria is long overdue. I cannot wait to visit both Juba and Khartoum. And finally, I am crossing my fingers that destiny surprises me with a trip to Greece for my birthday in November. You never know...!

QU’EST-CE QUI VOUS PLAÎT LE PLUS DANS LE FAIT DE VOYAGER POUR LE TRAVAIL ? Je crois que c’est l’illustration parfaite d’un but allié à une passion. Les voyages professionnels permettent d’avoir accès à des apprentissages croisés avec de nouveaux réseaux, ainsi que d’élargir ses perspectives et de voir comment améliorer son travail. Au final je sais que c’est toujours une situation gagnant-gagnant et une mission accomplie. Le seul inconvénient est que je ne peux pas emmener ma famille avec moi dans ces voyages passionnants. QUEL EST LE LIEN ENTRE CE QUE VOUS FAITES DANS LA VIE ET VOTRE DÉSIR DE VOYAGER AUTOUR DU MONDE ? Je travaille dans un secteur qui s’efforce de soulager la souffrance humaine dans le monde. Bien que de nombreux progrès aient été accomplis, le monde est encore loin d’avoir pleinement réalisé cet objectif. Je voudrais pouvoir aller au Yémen ou en Syrie et être là pour ces enfants affectés par le conflit et les frappes aériennes continues. Je veux me rendre au Bangladesh et travailler pour les réfugiés qui doivent fuir pour sauver leurs vies, pour échapper à la marginalisation à Myanmar. Je veux me rendre en Libye pour fournir de l’aide humanitaire, là où des enfants risquent leurs vies pour traverser la Mer Méditerranée à la recherche de la paix et d’un meilleur avenir. J’aimerais pouvoir être la voix de ces enfants. Je n’accomplirai cela qu’en me rendant à ces

endroits et en faisant l’expérience de leur souffrance et en parlant en leur nom. Que Dieu me vienne en aide ! QU’AVEZ-VOUS APPRIS AU SUJET DES GENS, DES ENDROITS, DES CHOSES…? Les gens sont différents; c’est dans la différence que l’on trouve la beauté. Les endroits sont uniques; ce caractère unique nous permet d’apporter de nouveaux éléments. Les choses vont et viennent, mais les souvenirs durent toute une vie. VOTRE VOYAGE LE PLUS MÉMORABLE JUSQU’À MAINTENANT ? Mon voyage à Bamako en avril 2018. Ce pays désertique a tant à offrir : une riche histoire, une population hospitalière et un futur prometteur. J’ai construit certaines des amitiés les plus solides de ma vie d’adulte pendant que j’étais à Bamako ! J’ai fait la fête la nuit par des températures de plus de 50°C, et j’ai visité la ville pendant la journée dans leurs vieux taxis Mercédès jaunes. J’ai également parlé plus de français au cours de ces 2 semaines que je ne l’avais fait depuis des années. C’était inoubliable ! QU’Y A-T-IL DANS LE FAIT DE VOYAGER AUTOUR DU MONDE QUI VOUS POUSSE À POURSUIVRE CES ENVIES DE VOYAGES ? Je suis une personne très spontanée. J’apprécie les nouvelles expériences, la découverte de nouveaux endroits, l’interaction avec de nouvelles cultures et les rencontres avec de nouvelles personnes. Je sais que cela semble très générique mais je vis pour ces choses. Je suis également quelqu’un qui aime beaucoup vivre en extérieur, je crois que ces envies de voyages me viennent donc naturellement. Et cela ne fait que commencer, j’ai encore tellement d’endroits à rayer de ma liste de choses à faire avant de mourir. EN PARLANT DE CHOSES À FAIRE AVANT DE MOURIR, QUELLES SONT LES DESTINATIONS QUE VOUS AVEZ CHOISIES POUR 2019 ? Un voyage sur l’île de Rusinga, sur le Lac Victoria que j’aurais dû faire depuis bien longtemps. J’ai tellement hâte de visiter Juba et Khartoum. Et enfin, je croise les doigts pour que le destin me surprenne enfin avec un voyage en Grèce pour mon anniversaire en Novembre. On ne sait jamais…!

Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show en est à sa 6ème édition Lancé en 2013, Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show se donne pour mission d’encourager l’emprunte culturelle chez les créateurs de mode rwandais à l’heure où la mondialisation appelle à un mix de cultures surtout en ce qui concerne la création artistique contemporaine. Six ans plus tard, l’évènement a pris une dimension internationale invitant chaque année des créateurs et stylistes ainsi que des mannequins venus d’ailleurs pour partager leurs dernières collections inspirées de leurs cultures respectives.

Launched in 2013, the Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show’s mission is to encourage Rwandan fashion designers to add a cultural dimension to their creations, this at a time when globalization calls for a mix of culture, especially in the arts sector. Six years down the line, the event has taken an international dimension, each year inviting designers, stylists and models from abroad to share their latest creations inspired by their respective cultures.

En marge du défilé annuel, les organisateurs de Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show se chargent du suivi de la Miss Héritage Rwanda chaque année et s’engagent à faire découvrir au grand public de nouveaux mannequins, cette année sur 36 mannequins qui ont défilé 20 d’entre eux étaient des débutants. « L’évènement offre une plateforme extraordinaire pour les mannequins qui se lancent car chaque année ils mettent en avant de nouvelles figures » déclare Eddy Kov, un des mannequins les plus présents sur les podiums du Rwanda ces dernières années et qui a défilé pour la première édition de Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show alors qu’il faisait ses premiers pas dans le métier « si tu ajoutes la touche culturelle du show, oh (soupirs) c’est une initiative à soutenir » ajoute-t-il. Pour marquer le « Cultural » du nom de ce rendez-vous annuel, la décoration contient chaque fois des éléments du patrimoine culturel africain et les mannequins « arborent des coupes de cheveux à l’ancienne ainsi que des tenues inspirées de la royauté rwandaises » précise avec fierté Célestin Ntawirema, initiateur de Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show. Nous l’avons rencontré au lendemain de la 6ème édition de cet évènement tenue au Kigali Cultural Village en septembre dernier.

On the side-lines of the annual fashion show, the organizers of the Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show also work closely on the Miss Heritage Rwanda contest every year. They are committed to introduce the public to new faces. This year alone, out of the 36 models on the catwalk, 20 made their debut. “The event is a superb platform for new models who are starting out, because every year new people are introduced,” said Eddy Kov, who debuted at the first edition of the Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show in 2012 and is now a familiar face on the Rwandan runways. In terms of culture, it is worth noting that the decor includes elements of African cultural heritage, the models display traditional hairstyles and outfits drawing inspiration from the Rwandan royalty, as per Célestin Ntawirema, founder of the Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show. We had a chat with him after the 6th edition of his event which was held at Kigali Cultural Village back in September.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONGRATULATIONS ON THE 6TH RUN OF THE RCFS, WHAT IS YOUR IMPRESSION OF THIS YEAR’S SHOW? We are so proud of how our show went down. We had 10 fashion designers, including 5 from abroad, and 36 models from Rwanda and other countries in the region. They all gave us a wonderful show, under the theme ‘Unique through creations of varied cultures.’ We also really enjoyed working with Positive Production for the set-up, which was stunning this year. IN TIMES SUCH AS THESE, WHEN WE ARE WITNESSING A RISE IN FASHION RELATED EVENTS, WHAT MAKES RCFS REMAIN RELEVANT? Culture is timeless; that is why our show has been going on for a while. It is important to keep paying homage to the times of our kings, through their attire and the amasunzu haircut which made our ancestors so proud. WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE RWANDA CULTURAL FASHION SHOW? Of course, we plan to carry on with the annual event, but we also want to establish a ‘fashion hall’. A creative space open to the public where designers will showcase their pieces and where models will practice for various shows. It’ll basically be a place for fashion enthusiasts.

QUELS SONT LES PLANS D’AVENIR POUR RWANDA CULTURAL FASHION SHOW ? Bien sûr, nous continuerons avec l’évènement annuel mais nous avons aussi le projet de débuter un grand « fashion hall » ouvert au public et dans lequel les créateurs viendront exposer leurs articles et les mannequins pourront s’entrainer pour les défilés, en gros un endroit pour rassembler les amateurs de mode.

Agoo! Hello! Today’s culture 101 class is about the Ashanti people. Got your pens and papers ready?

The Ashanti, also known as the Asante/Asanti are one of the most dominant tribes in Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast. They live in the Asante region, Southwest Ghana, a remnant of the Asante Empire founded in the 17th Century. They speak Twi, a dialect of the Akan language, spoken in southern and central Ghana by about 6 to 9 million Ashanti people as a first and second language. The Golden Stool is the symbol and soul of the Ashanti nation. Legend has it that Okomfo Anokye, high priest and one of the two chief founders of the Asante Confederacy caused the stool to descend from the sky and land on the lap of the first Asante king, Osei Tutu. So precious is it that when the British wanted to capture the stool by force, a war broke out between the Ashantis and the Brits. The Brits won the war but failed to capture the stool, so technically, the Ashanti won. This rebellion was led by queen Yaa Asantewaa, who is famous for this powerful speech prior to the war; "Now I see that some of you fear to go forward to fight for our king. If it was in the brave days of Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye, and Opoku Ware, chiefs would not sit down to see their king to be taken away without firing a shot. No European could have dared speak to chiefs of Asante in the way the governor spoke to you this morning. Is it true that the bravery of Asante is no more? I cannot believe it. It cannot be! I must say this: if you, the men of Asante, will not go forward, then we will. We, the women, will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight! We will fight till the last of us falls in the

Les Ashanti, également connus sous le nom d’Asante/Asanti sont une des tribus dominantes du Ghana, anciennement Côte de l’Or. Ils vivent dans la région Asante, au Sud-Ouest du Ghana, vestige de l’Empire Asante fondé au XVIIe siècle. Ils parlent le Twi, un dialecte de la langue Akan, parlé dans la partie sud et centrale du Ghana par environ 6 à 9 millions d’Ashanti, comme première et deuxième langue. Le Trône d’Or est le symbole et l’âme de la nation Ashanti. Les Britanniques ont gagné la guerre mais n’ont pas réussi à s’emparer du Trône, donc techniquement, les Ashanti ont gagné. La rébellion fut menée par la reine Yaa Asantewaa, qui est connue pour avoir fait ce puissant discours juste avant la guerre; « Je vois que certains d’entre vous ont peur d’avancer et de se battre pour notre roi. Si nous étions à la brave époque d’Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye, et Opoku Ware, les chefs ne se seraient pas restés assis à regarder leur roi se faire capturer sans tirer un seul coup de feu. Aucun Européen n’aurait osé parler à des chefs Asante comme le gouverneur vous a parlé ce matin. Estce donc vrai que la bravoure Asante n’existe plus ? Je ne peux

le croire. Cela ne se peut ! Je dois vous dire ceci : si vous, les hommes Asante, ne marchez pas de l’avant, alors nous le ferons. Nous, les femmes, nous le ferons. Je ferai appel à mes consœurs. Nous nous battrons ! Family is very important to the Ashantis. When a child is born, they are believed to have inherited the mother’s flesh and blood and the father’s soul. The mother’s family is therefore highly regarded; making it a majorly matrilineal society.

RITES OF PASSAGE Naming ceremonies take place eight days after birth. Among the Ashantis, every child has a soul name known as kradin, based on the day you were born. A child named on Friday for instance is called Kofi (male) or Afia (female). They are also named after influential individuals in the community. Among the Akan, where the Ashantis belong, only girls undergo puberty rites. Bragoro is performed only after a girl’s first menstruation. In the past, when a girl got pregnant before her initiation rites, she was banished from the town or village. The man who made her pregnant was also banished with her. This is known as Kyiribra. Nowadays, other religious beliefs, social changes, and education have brought changes in puberty rites. 78

Lorsque qu’un enfant nait, la croyance veut qu’il hérite du sang et de la chair de sa mère, et de l’âme de son père. La famille de la mère est donc hautement considérée; créant de ce fait une société matriarcale.

RITES DE PASSAGE Les cérémonies du nom ont lieu huit jours après la naissance. Chez les Ashantis, chaque enfant a un nom d’âme, connu sous le nom de kradin, basé sur le jour de sa naissance. Un enfant né un vendredi par exemple s’appellera Kofi (pour un garçon) ou Afia (pour une fille). Ils héritent également du nom d’influents individus de la communauté. The Ashantis are known for mouth-watering delicacies such as fufu and goat soup, mpoto mpoto, kotomire stew and eto, mashed plantain. Local ground spices are often boiled with red oil and incorporated into meals for that extra punch of aroma and flavour.

Ever heard of the infamous talking drums of the Asante? The drums were used as part of rituals, important ceremonies, music, storytelling and general festivities. They were also used to send messages and were feared by Europeans on the plantations, since they at times signalled the start of a rebellion. Different social groups among the Ashanti often have specific drum rhythms associated with them.

Les tambours étaient utilisés dans le cadre des rituels, importantes cérémonies, musiques, lorsque l’on racontait des histoires ou dans le cadre de festivités générales. Ils étaient également utilisés pour envoyer des messages et étaient craints par les européens sur les plantations, étant donné que leur battement pouvait signaler le début d’une rébellion. Chaque groupe social parmi les Ashanti a souvent un rythme de battement de tambour qui lui est propre.

From the adowa to the kete, the Ashanti people are not short of recreational music and dances. Fontomfrom or Bomaa is the most complex of all musical types of the Akan of Ghana. It is a series of warrior dances that are performed in religious, ceremonial and social contexts at the courts of chiefs.

WAY OF LIFE The Ashanti are mainly farmers who produce locally consumed goods such as plantains, coco yam, bananas, cassava and cacao for export. They are also known for arts and crafts including pottery, metal casting and wood carvings. However, weaving is what they are generally known for. Their worldfamous traditional attire, the kente cloth is one of their most prominent cultural exports. Kente comes from the word kenten which means basket. The first kente weavers used rafia palm to make clothes that looked like a basket, hence the name.

Pili Pili encompasses more than a bistro lounge and boutique hotel, unlike its name implies. It is the ultimate package: a place to wine, dine, and stay; Kigaliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best sports bar and a happening spot; a seeand-be-seen kind of nook. It is also a choice family hang out by day and a hot spot for revelers by night. Pili Pili is all about the experience; from the thoughtful selection of food and drink, an exquisite in-house music policy, to the splendid views of Kigaliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famed undulating hills that mellow into a Disneyland-like showcase of lights as the sun sets over Kigali. Pili Pili opened its doors to the public in December 2015, this around the same time mega hospitality brands like the Kigali Marriott and Radisson Blu hotels were setting up shop across town. For the upperclass haunt with an international clientele that Pili Pili set out to be, one would have thought the timing to be suicide. But Pili Pili set itself apart by curving out a new trend in food, service, and ambiance. Its location, smug atop a hill in the emerging middle-class suburb of Kibagabaga, almost between Kigali town and the airport was a welcome move away from standard hotel fare.

The sprawling facility consists of three broad sections; a main bar area on the ground level, a swimming pool and adjoining gardens with Sundowner-style seating, and a wooded upper terrace as the main dining section. Fitted with numerous TV screens, the bar section caters to the sports enthusiasts, with beer garden bench seating conducive for groups. With a panoramic view of the adjoining hills, the upstairs restaurant offers guests a bistro culinary experience, fusing local and international flavours; from grilled-to-perfection meats to pizza to fresh fish and Indian Ocean seafood. Pili Pili’s popularity with Kigalians and foreign visitors, including international celebrities is no coincidence. Its atmosphere delicately blends the rustic feel of an East African game lodge setting (simple but tasteful wood design), and a Nantucket beach bar, for those familiar with the isolated but dream destination island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the US. It is little wonder that Pili Pili oozes an aura of something of Great Lakes region renown. With its hand crafted thatch dome, it is the true embodiment of a real lifestyle influenced by the Caribbean/East African rim movement. For Rudy Ghirini, the brain behind the concept and owner of Pili Pili, it all started as a continuation of the story of Bora Bora Beach Bar in Bujumbura, Burundi, also his creation. From the onset, Ghirini set out to make the establishment its own musical genre kind of bistro; curving out a niche with live DJ sessions of lounge, ambient, chill-out, and tropical house sounds, along with the occasional live band. “The best ideas are those that gather simple and universal concepts, such as enjoying a drink in a unique natural environment with music as the soundtrack of that special moment,” he reckons. Pili Pili’s earliest reputations was that of first bona fide sports bar in Kigali, with an impressive display of seven large screens and three satellite dishes, meaning one could choose from three games being screened simultaneously. For sports bonanzas like the FIFA World Cup in Russia this year, management went the extra mile to bring on the football craze, erecting a large projector screen by the poolside, further setting the establishment apart from competitors. At the same time, a miniature urban football pitch emerged beyond the sand area adjoining the pool, that is open to adults and children alike for a game of fun football. The swimming pool area not only creates an urban beach ambiance, it also is the main draw for families and groups of friends seeking daytime relaxation while soaking up the tropical sun. A white sand park on the swimming pool periphery is the perfect frolicking spot for the young ones. The sundowner-style seating by the poolside is just what the doctor would recommend for a lazy day.

PAUL KAGAME, PRESIDENT OF RWANDA AND CURRENT CHAIRPERSON OF THE AFRICAN UNION Paul Kagame is regarded as an exemplary African, given his exceptional achievements which brought Rwanda back from its ashes after 1994. He was chosen by his peers to lead the African Union for a one-year term in 2018. With the Pan African organisation having a rotating chairmanship that changes every year, the arrival of the incumbent marked nothing different from past occurrences, safe for the fact that Paul Kagame does not do things like everyone else. He does them with unwavering quality. In March 2017, he welcomed his African counterparts in Kigali for an extraordinary summit of the African Union. Together they signed the agreement on the establishment of the continental free-trade area. “This is a historical day. After Addis-Ababa in 1963, Abuja in 1991, Durban in 2002, Kigali now marks a new step towards our integration,” stated Moussa Faki, the President of the African 82

Union Commission during the closing ceremony. During an interview with Jeune Afrique President Kagame expressed the following: “My peers have mandated me for this even before I became the current Chairperson of the AU, and the fact that they admitted that deep reforms were necessary was already a good work basis. My job has been simple since: talking with them, listening to them, taking their ideas into account and moving forward towards independence and real and concrete credibility of the organisation. Here we are talking first and foremost about financial independence: never have the internal funds dedicated to the prevention and intervention capacities of our peace-keeping forces been higher. Same thing with the funds intended to the reduction of the AU Commission’s reliance on foreign aid. En politique PAUL KAGAME, LE PRÉSIDENT DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE DU RWANDA ET LE PRÉSIDENT EN EXERCICE DE L’UNION AFRICAINE De plus en plus cité en exemple africain de par le monde, en raison de son exceptionnelle capacité à faire renaitre de ses cendres le Rwanda après 1994, Paul Kagame est apparu aux yeux de ses pairs comme celui qui devait prendre la présidence de l’Union Africaine pour un mandat. A chaque année, un nouveau président à la tête de l’Organisation panafricaine, rien d’extraordinaire, me direz-vous. Si, pourtant! Paul Kagame ne fait pas les choses comme tout le monde. Il les aime bien faites, cela se sait.

C’est sous son mandat qu’il a accueilli à Kigali les dirigeants africains pour le sommet extraordinaire de l'Union Africaine. Ensemble, ils ont signé l'accord prévoyant l'instauration d'une zone de libre-échange continentale. « Ce jour est historique. Après Addis-Abeba en 1963, Abuja en 1991, Durban en 2002, Kigali marque une nouvelle étape dans notre marche vers plus d’intégration », a déclaré Moussa Faki, le président de la Commission de l’Union Africaine lors de la cérémonie de clôture. Le président Kagame affirmait en Juin dernier, lors d’un entretien avec le mensuel Jeune Afrique : ‘‘Mes pairs m’ont mandaté pour cela avant même que je devienne le président en exercice de l’UA, et le fait qu’ils aient admis la nécessité d’une réforme en profondeur était déjà une excellente base de travail. Mon job, depuis, est simple : parler avec eux, les écouter, tenir compte de leurs idées et avancer sur la voie d’une indépendance et d’une crédibilité réelles et concrètes de notre organisation. Cette indépendance est d’abord financière : jamais les fonds endogènes consacrés aux capacités de prévention et d’intervention de nos forces de maintien de la paix n’ont été à un niveau aussi élevé qu’ils le sont aujourd’hui. Même chose pour les fonds destinés à la réduction de la dépendance de la Commission de l’UA vis-à-vis de l’aide étrangère. Indépendance économique ensuite : l’accord de Zone de Libre-Echange Continentale [ZLEC] a enfin vu le jour en Mars à Kigali, c’est un progrès historique’’.

The transition after the departure of the patriarch Robert Mugabe, father of the Zimbabwean independence, had to be done smoothly. Emerson Mnangagwa was Vice-President from 2014 to 2017, and after he was sacked, he immediately went into exile. The forced removal of Robert Mugabe on the 21st November 2017 to anticipate the ongoing destitution procedure launched against him precipitated his return. Emmerson Mnangagwa returned to Zimbabwe on the 22nd of November 2017. He assumed the role of acting president and was sworn in on 24th November. On 25th November, the Zimbabwean justice declared that the coup was constitutional and retroactively cancelled the dismissal of Emmerson Mnangagwa from his position as Vice-President. Up next was a move for the ballot box; a necessary step for any candidate courting the presidency. He was elected as president on the 30th of July 2018, after the first round of elections. Emmerson Mnangagwa was then sworn in on the 26th of August and formed his first government on 7th September. In priority order for this new reformist government, the mission to restore the image of Zimbabwe, thus the introduction of the motto “Zimbabwe is open for business.” BARACK OBAMA, FORMER AMERICAN PRESIDENT IS BACK ON THE POLITICAL SCENE He made history as the first black President of the United States and has since continued to draw the attention of the media around the world. Whether he is making an appearance as a conference speaker or traveling for leisure, Barack Obama still draws big crowds! Even more so when he is talking about American politics. A former American President usually does not comment on the politics of his successor. But last July, on the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth, in an overcrowded Wanderers stadium, Barack Obama shared his sentiments about the forthcoming campaign for the midterms in the United States. Then in September, Obama travelled to Kenya, his second home and paternal land. It had been more than three years since he last visited. In July, he went to Kogelo village where his father was born and where he also died. He met Sarah, the matriarch of the Obama family, whom he calls Grandmother. Barack Obama inaugurated the Sauti Kuu (strong voices in Swahili) youth centre, founded by his step-sister Auma Obama. The space was created to give the youth access to books, internet and sports as well as classes on civic education, finance and environmental. p rotection.

EMERSON MNANGAGWA, NOUVEAU PRÉSIDENT DU ZIMBABWE Il fallait oser faire partir-dans la douceur- le patriarche Robert Mugabe, père de l’indépendance du Zimbabwe. Emerson Mnangagwa qui était vice-président de 2014 à 2017, limogé, il s’exile aussitôt. La démission forcée de Robert Mugabe, le 21 Novembre 2017 pour devancer la procédure de destitution lancée à son encontre, précipite son retour de l’exilé. Emmerson Mnangagwa regagne le Zimbabwe le lendemain, 22 Novembre 2017. Il prend la tête de l'État par intérim, puis est investi président de la République en prêtant serment le 24 Novembre. Le 25 Novembre, la justice Zimbabwéenne a déclaré que le coup d'État était constitutionnel et a rétroactivement annulé t le limogeage d'Emmerson Mnangagwa de son poste de premier vice-président. La voie des urnes, incontournable, est le passage obligé à tout candidat qui brigue la magistrature suprême. Le 30 Juillet 2018, il est élu dès le premier tour de l'élection présidentielle. La cérémonie d'investiture se déroule le 26 Août. Le 7 Septembre 2018, il forme son nouveau gouvernement qui se veut rénovateur et avec comme mission de redorer le blason du Zimbabwe et remonter son économie avec comme slogan « Zimbabwe open for business. » BARACK OBAMA, EX-PRÉSIDENT AMÉRICAIN, REVENU SUR LA SCÈNE POLITIQUE S’il est entré dans l’histoire en devenant le tout premier président Afro Américain, il n’a pas cessé d’attirer autour de lui les caméras des médias du monde entier. Pour ses conférences chèrement rémunérées, un déplacement même dans le cadre de sa vie privée, une escale dans une ville, Barack Obama tire toujours de grandes foules ! Plus encore, quand il parle de la politique américaine. Un président Américain qui, le moment venu, cède son fauteuil à son successeur est tenu de ne guère critiquer l’action de celui qui lui succède. En Juillet dernier, à l’occasion du centième anniversaire de naissance de Nelson Mandela dans un stade bondé, Barak Obama ’a annoncé les couleurs de l’ambiance de ce qui serait la campagne des midterms, chez lui, aux Etats Unis. En Septembre, Obama revenait au Kenya, son deuxième domicile et terre paternel Cela faisait trois ans qu’il ne s’y était plus rendu. En Juillet, il est allé dans le village de Kogelo où son père est né et décédé. Il y a vu Sarah, matriarche de la famille Obama qu’il appelle «Grand-mère». Human rights AISSA MAIGA AND FIFTEEN OTHER BLACK ACTRESSES AT THE CANNES FESTIVAL History will remember 2018 as the year women demanded basic equal rights. They demanded respect for their rights to gender equality and equal opportunities in life. Then, the #MeToo movement created an unprecedented tsunami in exposing sexual abuse faced by women and girls around the world. But it did not end there. Requests for equality in other realms, including equal pay, were made. The momentum gained force. The French actress, of Malian origin, Aïssa Maïga, co-wrote the book “Noire n’est pas mon metier” (being black is not my job), with fifteen other actresses of African descent. Sara Martins, Marie Philomène Nga, Sabine Pakora, Firmine Richard, Sonia Rolland, Maggaiyia Silberfeld, Shirley Souagnon, Assa Sylla, Karidja Touré, France Zobba, Nadège Beausson-Diagne, Mata Gabin, Maïmouna Gueye, Eye Haidara and Rachel Khan, decided to say loud and clear that their skin colour, was not a profession; a call for more diversity in the movie industry, and a move towards equality. Joining in solidarity for the cause was the legendary Burundian singer Khadja Nin who walked up the famous stairs by their side, all of them dressed by Olivier Rousteig for Balmain; the only black man to head a fashion house. They were attending the screening of the movie Burning by the South Korean director Lee Chang-Dong.

Les revendications se sont étendues à la parité dans tous les domaines, y compris en ce qui concerne les égalités salariales entre hommes et femmes. Le courant n’avait jamais été aussi fort. The artist behind the 30 Billion World Tour, Davido, is admired for both his music and his personality, and ever so popular with the African youth both on the continent and in the diaspora. Known as semi-bad boy and semi-romantic, he presents a lethal mix of character for his fans. In a nation like Nigeria that worships Fela's Afrobeat, Davido’s music has been more than well received. His recipe for success can be described as a clever mix between Afrobeat, R&B and urban music, which is what seduced his label in the first place and made him famous on YouTube and other social networks. The young artist has scooped up 2 MTV Awards and a Mobo Award, a diamond disc for his song If, and a platinum disc for Fall. Collaboration seems to be the key word when it comes to Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun aka Wizkid. He has amassed a long list of features alongside great names such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Rick Ross, Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj among others. He signed a contract estimated at over one million USD with Sony Music International in March 2017; the label’s most expensive African artist, according to Le Monde. Nominated seven times for the Billboard Music Awards in 2017, his third album Sounds from the Other Side came out last July. WizKid is taking the music scene by storm with no end in sight.

Sports 2018 FOOTBALL WORLD CHAMPIONS Last but not least, our subjective list tackles the world of sports. Surely you were privy to the fact that the 2018 football world champion team was mostly made up of players of African origin, precisely 14 out of 23 players. For some time, it created a sound narrative to flash in front of the people opposed to immigration in the West. The tournament was followed diligently on the African continent, especially after the brilliant Belgian team was eliminated in the semi-finals. Spectators the world over were kept on the edge of their seats from the beginning until the very last second of the championship and shared memorable moments throughout. Beyond the competition, those who were keen to know more about Didier Deschamps’s team quickly realized that in addition to their talent, the players had very likable personalities. Individually or as a team, there was no display of oversized ego, no bad press, and they always had a smile on their faces! We deliberately omitted several personalities who could have appeared on the list. This is not a ranking, rather, a subjective and non-exhaustive selection of people. Just enough to entertain you and to boost your general knowledge of all the good things happening in Africa.

En Sport LES CHAMPIONS DU MONDE DE FOOTBALL 2018! Les derniers sur notre liste subjective ne sont certainement pas des moindres ! Il ne vous aura pas échappé que l’équipe championne du monde de football 2018 est majoritairement composée de joueurs d’origines africaines. Sur les vingt trois sélectionnés, quatorze le sont. Tous issus de l’immigration, ils sont un beau ‘‘pied de nez’’ à tous les détracteurs de l’immigration en occident. Les matchs suivis du premier au dernier sur tout le continent africain ont connus leur apogée après l’élimination de l’excellente équipe belge, en demi-finale. Tenus en haleine de la première à la dernière seconde, les publics du monde entier auront vécu des moments forts mémorables. Au-delà des compétitions, ceux qui ont voulu en savoir plus sur la sélection de Didier Deschamps se sont vite rendu compte qu’en plus de nous avoir offerts une compétition surprenante, les personnalités y étaient pour beaucoup. Les bleus de 2018 ont épaté le public par leur attitude exemplaire. Aussi bien en équipe qu’en solo. Aucune trace d’égo surdimensionné, aucune faute de communication, avec… le sourire en plus ! Certes, nous en avons sciemment omis plusieurs de celles et ceux qui devaient figurer sur cette liste. Ce n’est pas un palmarès, juste un choix subjectif bien loin d’être exhaustif. De quoi vous inciter, pour vous amuser à vous faire votre propre opinion et stimuler ainsi votre culture générale sur toutes les bonnes choses qui se passent en Afrique.

It had snowed very hard. Ralph and Edward, who were visiting Grandma in the country, had to stay in the house all day. When they went to bed it was still snowing, and every time they woke up during the night, they could hear the wind sighing and whistling around the house, and through he branches of the old pine tres. But the next morning the sun was shining brightly. Such a glorious day! How the branches of the pine trees did sparkle. "It looks as if they had been sprinkled with gold dust and diamonds," exclaimed Ralph.

When Grandma called them in to dinner they wondered where the time had gone since breakfast. After dinner, Ralph was looking out of the window, when he spied two little birds cuddled up on a branch of a pine tree. "Oh, Edward! come here," he called. "See those poor little birds. They look half frozen and so hungry."

"Oh Grandma! Please do hurry breakfast. We are going out to build a fort," cried the boys, bursting into the dining-room.

"Poor little things," replied Edward. "Doesn't it make you feel mean to think what a jolly time we had this morning out of the snow which has covered up the places where they get their food?"

Grandma smiled and told them to eat a good breakfast, for building a fort was hard work.

"Let us get some food from Grandma and throw it out to them," said Ralph. "Perhaps they will find it."

They were soon out in the snow, and what a splendid time they did have.

The little birds were soon chirping and flying about merrily and Ralph said it sounded as if they kept saying, "thank you."

The fort did not grow very fast, for they had to stop so often to snowball each other.

Will not other little children be as kind as Ralph and Edward?
