I was on flight WB112 from Lusaka on the morning of Tuesday 20th June, and WB 452 to Nairobi, also on Tuesday morning and for both flights, the planes were very clean and comfortable and the customer service was top notch. I particularly enjoyed the in-flight Wi-Fi on the Boeing 737. It’s an excellent facility that enables one to stay in touch. My only suggestion is that you increase the complimentary duration from 15 minutes to 30. Otherwise, I’m a very satisfied customer and look forward to my return journey on Saturday 24th June. I arrived in Kigali on WB112 from Lusaka in transit back to Nairobi on WB452 on 16th June 2017. This was the return leg of a day-trip to Lusaka, having arrived in Lusaka on 15th June 2017 on WB403/WB112. I apparently dropped my credit card holder in the cabin during my flight from Lusaka to Kigali. Whilst waiting in the airport lounge for my connecting flight to Nairobi, Mr. Thomas Bizumungu, RwandAir’s Security Officer, approached me and asked if I had lost anything. I immediately realised that I did not have my credit card holder and proceeded to itemise the contents. When detailing the cash contained therein, Mr. Bizumungu asked me to re-affirm the amount, which I repeated. Mr. Bizumungu then produced my credit card holder and showed me that I had understated the cash therein. Furthermore, he expressly declined any gift of gratitude stressing that he was merely performing his duties. I am overwhelmed by the courtesy, professionalism and integrity of your staff.

My Brussels Experience

Born in Bujumbura and having grown up in Kinshasa, Brussels has always occupied a space in my imagination. This fantasy was fed by stories from the Congolese and Rwandan diaspora and continued until I set forth to discover the City of Light in 2006. Since then, nearly all my European travels include a stopover through Brussels. Its reputation has more than lived up to my expectations.
I first set foot on Brussels soil at theBrussels International Airport, often referred to as Zaventem due to its location. Since that time, my impression of the airport has remained the same; very well structured and perfectly stocked duty-free shops to the endless moving walkways making it easy for passengers disembarking from their flights coming from Africa. It is true that the latter is not a luxury, given the distance one has to walk. My experience with the immigration agents taught me to keep on hand any document to support the purpose of my trip, just as if I was applying for a visa for the first time. Once out of the building, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to more than two hours to reach the city centre, depending on traffic. On subsequent trips, I travelled to Brussels from the Amsterdam AirportSchipolvia the high-speed train which takes passengers straight to the city centre at Gare du Midi. In any case, transportation in Brussels is well organized for a medium-sized city. Between the tramway, the bus and the metro, the network offers a good coverage of the city and various quick travel options. While the metro remains the quickest way to get around, one should opt for the tramway and the bus if the plan is to explore the city until midnight. After that time, things get a little tricky which can be considered a disadvantage for a city with such a vibrant nightlife. City dwellers move to the beat of the night often leaving their homes well past 11pm to go dancing, in which case, there is no other alternative but to take a taxi. The few times I have had to stay in a hotel while in Brussels, I was pleased with the great offering. This is when I noticed the stark difference in price between accommodation in the city centre, especially in the EU Quarter and its surroundings, where most of the EU officials live. At the time, it proved quite difficult to find a hotel that was not fully booked. Thus, one should plan

Je suis né à Bujumbura et ai grandi à Kinshasa. Mon imaginaire nourrit par les récits des diasporas congolaise et rwandaise a inclut Bruxelles de manière quasi naturelle et ce, jusqu’à ma découverte de la ville en 2006. Depuis lors, presque tous mes voyages en Europe passent par Bruxelles. La réputation de la capitale belge a été à la hauteur de mes attentes. J’ai posé mes premiers pas sur le sol bruxellois à Zaventem, l’aéroport international de Bruxelles. Par la suite, lors de tous mes passages, j’ai gardé l’impression d’un aéroport très bien structuré. Depuis les duty-free parfaitement achalandés, jusqu’aux interminables tapis roulants pour faciliter la marche. Il est vrai que ce dernier n’est pas de luxe, vue la distance qu’il faut parcourir à la marche. Mon expérience avec les agents d’immigration m’a aussi appris à conserver sur moi tout document nécessaire à expliquer l’objet de ma visite, comme si je demandais le visa pour la première fois. Ensuite, à la sortie, il faut rouler en voiture. Cela prend de quelques minutes à plus de deux heures selon le trafic, pour atteindre le centre-ville. Par la suite, il m’est arrivé de préférer l’option d’un atterrissage à Amsterdam pour ne rejoindre Bruxelles que par le

Une promenade dans la vieille ville s’est toujours imposée à moi pendant mes premières visites. Avec un passage obligé à la Grand-Place pour admirer les belles façades anciennes surtout early especially during the periods when important meetings are being held. However, given that most of my stays in Brussels were for leisure; shopping and outings have always been my preferred activities. A walk in the historical centre of town featured at the top of my to-do list the first few times I visited the city, along with the Grand-Place where I could admire the buildings’ beautiful and historic facades, while breathing in the summer winds and savouring the world-famous Belgian waffles. During subsequent stays in Brussels, I came across the public parks and gardens and was stunned by their beauty. To this day, one of my favourites remains the Parc Duden in Forest which offers a breath-taking
view over the city. As far as shopping is concerned, one can head to the great avenue Toison d’Or, the Avenue Louise or the Rue Neuve, where all the shops are lined up offering a wide variety of choices, worthy of the great megalopolis. If one is after best value for money, one must head over to Anderlecht or Waterloo to score the finest deals. After a long day of shopping, nothing beats the terraces of Avenue de la Toison d’Or. Treat yourself to a Trappist beer; a real delight during the hot summer days! The most fascinating aspect of Brussels remains its population. Where Paris and London are oftentimes described as the most cosmopolitan European cities, I was

train à grande vitesse qui me dépose à la Gare du Midi dans le centre. Dans tous les cas, les transports Bruxellois restent parfaitement organisés pour une ville de moyenne dimension. Entre le tram, le bus et le métro, le réseau est assez bien desservi pour offrir les options les plus rapides. Si le métro reste le plus rapide et offre une belle panoplie artistique de la décoration de ses stations, le tram et le bus sont plus attractifs pour mieux visiter la ville jusqu’à minuit. Malheureusement, après minuit, il faut batailler un peu. Ce qui peut être un inconvénient pour une ville ou les boites de nuits ouvrent jusqu’au petit matin. Certains bruxellois sortent parfois de chez eux pour aller danser après 23 heures. Dans ce cas, pas de choix. Une seule option, le taxi !
Bien que j’aie très peu de fois logé dans les hôtels de Bruxelles, la ville regorge d’une large gamme. La seule fois où j’ai dû prendre une chambre dans le centre, j’ai été très surpris de la différence des prix. Surtout dans les environs du quartier européen où résident la plupart d’ officiels de l’Union Européenne. Il a même été très difficile de trouver une simple chambre. Attention donc aux périodes de réunions importantes. Toutefois, puisque la majorité de mes séjours à Bruxelles étaient par pur loisir, le shopping et les sorties ont toujours été mes activités préférées. stunned to discover how diverse Brussels truly is. When I wander in the neighbourhoods of Matonge, Ixelles or Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, only the buildings give away that I am in Europe. It is where I have had some of the most beautiful encounters with people from all walks of life in very exotic restaurants. As for Belgians, despite their sometimes grumpy demeanour, they are very welcoming. One of my first interactions was in the streets with a gentleman I addressed in French as I asked him for directions. He answered, albeit impatiently, in impeccable French that he was sorry but he did not speak French. I was surprised and enquired if he spoke English. Then, in very broken English, he kindly directed me and even carried on with a little conversation. This brief encounter showed me that the people of Brussels are the nicest once you figure out how to approach them.

Lors de mes passages suivants à Bruxelles, je suis tombé en admiration pour les jardins et parcs publiques. L’un de mes préférés reste le Parc Duden à Forest. Mitoyen du Parc de Forest, il offre une vue imprenable sur la ville. Pour le shopping, le centre-ville regorge d’hypermarchés tous aussi bien fournis les uns que les autres. Que ce soit à la Toison d’Or, l’Avenue Louise ou à la Rue Neuve, les boutiques offrent un choix digne des grandes mégalopoles. Mais là encore, pour le meilleur rapport qualité-prix, j’ai appris à ne pas hésiter à me rendre à Anderlecht ou même à Waterloo pour les meilleures affaires. Quand arrive le moment de repos après une journée de

shopping, rien de tel pour bien le savourer que les terrasses de la Toison d’Or. Bruxelles m’a fait découvrir le bonheur des bières trappistes. Un régal sous la chaleur estivale ! Mais le plus fascinant à Bruxelles reste sa population. Si Paris et Londres sont souvent décrites comme les villes européennes les plus cosmopolites, j’ai été souvent surpris par la diversité des communautés Bruxelloises. Lorsque je me promène dans les quartiers de Matonge à Ixelles ou à Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, seules les habitations me permettent de dire que je suis en Europe. Et dans ce cas, il m’a été donné de faire de belles rencontres avec les peuples du monde dans des restaurants aux gastronomies exotiques. Quant aux Belges d’origine, malgré un air parfois grincheux, ce sont des personnes très accueillantes. Un de mes premiers contacts avec un inconnu dans la rue pour demander mon chemin a été avec un monsieur auquel je m’étais adressé en français. Il me répondit avec impatience mais dans un français impeccable : « Excusez-moi monsieur, mais je ne parle pas français ». Surpris, je lui demandai s’il parlait anglais. Alors, dans un anglais très approximatif, il m’indiqua très gentiment mon chemin et nous eûmes même une petite conversation. Illustration donc que les bruxellois sont des personnes vraiment gentilles, une fois qu’on sait les aborder...

A documentary play in kigali Bringing to light the stories of people ‘without history’, those who, by analogy, are without a homeland’, nomads, is the mission that Maylis Isabelle Bouffartigue set for herself. In her stage adaption of the novel The Human Race by Robert Antelme, the writer, director, actress, artistic director and lover of French theatre, brought down the house in two performances in Kigali this past June. I
sabelle and the Rwandan actor and humourist Diogène Ntarindwa, better known under his stage name Atome performed a one-hour rendition, reciting harrowing monologues from carefully selected parts of the book with so much emotion that it spread to the audience; against a backdrop of a dark and nearly bare stage, only surrounded by mirrors. Isabelle says such ornaments draw in the public and that, “to a certain extent ,through their reflection, they join us on stage”. For the writer, the public is at the heart of all her shows, she even goes as far as saying that the “public is the lead role”, a statement she has adopted since 2011 with her first solo play La Diseuse Quelqu’un, a scenic poem that involved the public as a choir. This enchanting experience led some of her followers to seek out ways to get involved with her work. Isabelle recalled such encounters happening in Poland, Mali and even in France. This eventually led to the start of her theatre company, Monsieur Madame (Mr Mrs), a mix of professionals and non-professionals in the art sector. The company offers a new approach to the way one writes history; tackling topics such as the trials of the code noir (the black code), the code of the indigenous status, and the French code of foreigners.

Voilà la mission que s’est fixée Maylis Isabelle Bouffartigue, auteure, metteur en scène, actrice, directrice artistique et grande amoureuse du théâtre. La française a amené à Kigali son adaptation scénique du roman L’Espèce Humaine de Robert Antelme pour deux représentations applaudies les 27 et 28 juin derniers. Isabelle en duo avec l’acteur et humoriste rwandais Diogène Ntarindwa, plus connu sous son pseudo « Atome » se produisent durant un peu plus d’une heure, récitant avec une émotion contagieuse de poignants monologues issus de passages du livre soigneusement sélectionnés par la première; le tout sur une scène sombre presque nue au contour fait de miroirs qui s’avèrent être plus que de simples ornements. « C’est un moyen d’inclure le public qui par son reflet nous rejoint en quelques sortes sur scène » explique Isabelle. Pour elle, le public est en effet au cœur même de tous ses spectacles. « Le public tient le rôle principal »,

Since 2014, Monsieur Madame has started creating a workshop around the topic of genocide, with the collaboration of intellectuals, lawyers, historians, psychiatrists and sociologists. It is during this process, whilst studying the book Génocidé by Révérien Rurangwa, that the company was introduced to the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The fact that such tragedy had taken place in Rwanda was scarcely known in her home country of France or elsewhere in the world brought Isabelle to a sense of stupefaction. This eventually guided her decision to cast a Rwandan as the lead in her production of The Human Race. She believed that while the book talks about the genocide of the Jewish people, her choice of actor would be an indirect way of talking about Rwanda. She went on to say, “Casting Diogène was the best choice and I do not regret it. J’ai noté les contacts de toutes ces personnes et ce fût le début de notre compagnie ». Isabelle est à la tête de la compagnie Monsieur Madame, composée de professionnels et non professionnels du domaine artistique, qui veut proposer une manière nouvelle d’écrire l’histoire ; elle s’est notamment attaquée à la mise en procès théâtralisée du code noir, du code de l’indigénat et du code (français) des étrangers. Depuis 2014, la compagnie Monsieur Madame a ouvert un atelier/création autour de la thématique du Génocide avec la collaboration d’intellectuels, de juristes, d’historiens, de psychiatres et de sociologues. Le choix de Diogène s’est imposé comme le meilleur et je ne le regrette pas. Dès la première représentation, il avait promis qu’il amènerait cette pièce ici chez lui et voilà, nous y sommes ». « C’était un défi de faire cette représentation ici car, ce genre de théâtre qu’on qualifierait de documentaire, est un style auquel le public rwandais n’est pas habitué et. Rwanda on the Move By Gloria Iribagiza
Rwanda is one of the few African countries that have untangled from the reins of corruption, bad politics and attained considerable economic progress over the years. The story of the Newer ‘New Rwanda’ is one that suggests that history is written by those who are determined to tackle the challenges they face with the greater good of the public as a priority. President Paul Kagame’s leadership has transformed and reformed the public good and presents yet another course of limitless exertion of a civilisation that is evolving to dismantle the stereotypical tone with which the world views Africa. Rwanda’s story is one of regeneration and places a contrast to what good politics results into for Africa— Rwanda makes the case that African states have the means to become better. Rwanda’s model of leadership is like a potential blueprint for a ‘New Africa’. And because of this, Rwanda does not bulk under the seasonal reception of pervasive indifference pierced by a few shrieks of criticism from external influences that perpetuate the ‘dark continent narrative’ of Africa. That is why democracy according to James Baldwin’s ‘Rap on Race’ is not about ‘levelling everyone to the

L’histoire du Rwanda est une histoire de régénération et présente, par opposition, ce à quoi une bonne politique peut mener en Afrique - le Rwanda démontre que les états Africains ont les moyens de devenir meilleurs. lowest common denominator’ but it should always be about ‘the possibility of everyone being able to raise himself to a certain level of excellence.’ This means working together toward a desired goal that unites people, involves citizens and transforms societies for the better. This is best experienced in Rwanda in the way the country has excelled in five key areas among others that contrast the typical African narrative. Due to good politics and the leadership of Paul Kagame, the Business, Tourism, Security, Transport and Umuganda (community-based initiatives) are excelling. This is why.
1. Business: Whenever an enabling environment is created for entrepreneurship, a development boom happens. The six-hour business registration process at the Rwanda Development Board makes it possible for anyone to own their business within a given day. Allowing citizens and foreigners alike to start small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country has enabled the economy to achieve its GDP average of 7.25%, generate employment for its people and improve the livelihoods of the populace. Increasing SMEs in any country is good for employment. According to the World Bank, formal SMEs contribute up to 60% of total employment and up to 40% of the national income (GDP) in emerging economies. SMEs generate 70-90% of employment for middle-income countries and 65% of employment in high-income countries. Additionally, 4 out of 5 new positions in emerging markets are with SMEs. It goes without saying that enabling the establishment of a multitude of SMEs in any African country will spur economic development.
2. Tourism: Rwanda’s tourism has boomed over the past five years and is projected to make revenues of up to US$444 million this year. Rwanda is now home to the “Big Five” — lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo and the black rhinoceros. These species are singled out by tourists and adventures not because of their size but because of the difficulty and danger that is involved with bringing them down. These are topped by the Mountain Gorilla trekking at US$1500 per head- a priceless experience that beats no other. Rwanda is fast becoming a regional MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Events and Exhibitions) destination. It was recently ranked third in Africa after Morocco and South Africa by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) 2016 report. The country’s acquisition of more RwandAir carriers has increased its number of destinations too and this makes accessibility to Rwanda as a tourism destination possible more than ever.

La meilleure façon d’en faire l’expérience est de constater la manière dont le Rwanda excelle, dans cinq domaines en particulier, par opposition à l’image typique de l’Afrique. Grâce à de bonnes politiques et au bon leadership de Paul Kagame, les secteurs des Affaires, du Tourisme, de la Sécurité, du Transport et de l’Umuganda (initiatives communautaires) ne cessent d’exceller. Voici pourquoi.
2. Le Tourisme :
1. Les Affaires : Lorsque l’on crée un environnement propice à l’entreprenariat, un développement sensationnel se produit alors. Le processus d’enregistrement des entreprises auprès du conseil de développement du Rwanda (RDB) permet à qui que soit de créer sa propre entreprise en une journée. Permettre aux citoyens et aux étrangers de créer de petites et moyennes entreprises (PME) dans le pays a permis à l’économie d’atteindre une moyenne de 7,25% de croissance du PIB, de générer de l’emploi pour sa population, et d’améliorer le niveau de vie des citoyens. L’augmentation du nombre de PME dans n’importe quel pays s’accompagne toujours de

L’acquisition de deux avions RwandAir supplémentaires a également augmenté le nombre de destinations desservies et rend le Rwanda plus accessible que jamais en tant que destination touristique.
3. Security: There is no development without peace and the opposite is true. Yet both peace and development are not possible without security that provides the foundation for all other systems to function in any country. It goes without saying that, a society with no sense of the past and no sense of the significance of the human role in the experience and creation of its history cannot have a sense of destiny. Rwanda is creating its destiny against all odds by restoring its Agaciro (loosely translated as dignity). A people that have a sense of dignity are those who have safety. The sustainable security and stability that is experienced in Rwanda under Paul Kagame cannot be something that is in discordance with the development and sense of purposeful will that Rwandans measure themselves against. Sustainable security is what Africans need for development and to break away from the ebb and flow of foreign interests on the continent.
4. Transport and Infrastructure The inaccessibility of places in-land in several African countries has limited the flow of trade between people. While Rwanda is small in size, there have been no reservations when it comes to the construction of the arteries of roads that connect all its districts trading centres, hospitals and schools. Having well-built roads along both the main electricity grid and off-grid lines allows for the quick and fast movement of people within the country. The swift road transport provision has added value to the services that passengers receive as they travel within the country as these cause less delays along the way. High internet connectivity in any part of the country is a reality and this makes life manageable for all walks of life in this age of information.
5. Umuganda Umuganda is a Rwandan home-grown solution that brings together people from a given community to clean and talk about their issues with the intention of creating a solution-oriented community that fosters unity and cleanliness. Africa has on several accounts been tasked to provide home-grown solutions to its challenges. Umuganda that is done every last Saturday of the month, is only one such example that have moved people away from the complacency that comes with following obscure trends from other places that would never work. Unlike other major cities across the continent, there are neither rubbish dumps by the roadside in Rwanda nor are there plastic bags littering the streets. Why wait for foreign aid to fund the cleaning of our neighbourhoods when we have the advantage of our very own people. Becoming authentic in our diverse cultures is one point of action; the other is having a sense of objective standards for the individual as well as the greater good of the community. This speaks greatly to not reaffirming the ‘victim of circumstance’ attitude but rather, enforcing the attitude of becoming the makers of our history in Africa.

3. La Sécurité: Il n’y a pas de développement sans paix, et l’inverse est également valable. Cependant la paix et le développement ne sont pas possibles sans la sécurité, qui pose les bases du fonctionnement de tous les autres systèmes d’un pays. Cela va sans dire qu’un pays sans notion de son passé et de l’importance du rôle de l’homme dans l’expérience et la création de son histoire, ne peut avoir de sens de la destinée. Le Rwanda crée son destin contre toute attente, en restaurant son Agaciro (que l’on peut traduire par dignité). Un peuple doté d’un sens de la dignité est un peuple en sécurité. La sécurité et stabilité durables que le Rwanda connait sous Paul Kagame ne peut être en désaccord avec le développement et la volonté résolue par rapport auxquels les Rwandais se mesurent. La sécurité durable, c’est de cela dont les africains ont besoin pour leur développement et pour s’éloigner des flux d’intérêts étrangers inondant le continent.
4. Le Transport et l’Infrastructure L’inaccessibilité de certains endroits de l’arrière-pays de certaines nations africaines a limité le flux d’échange entre les personnes. Bien que le Rwanda soit relativement petit par sa taille, il n’y a eu aucune réserve quant à la construction d’artères routières connectant tous ses districts et centres d’échanges, hôpitaux et écoles. Disposer de routes bien construites le long du réseau électrique principal et des lignes hors réseau permet à la population de se déplacer
facilement et rapidement dans le pays. Les rapides offres de transport routier ont augmenté le niveau de service reçu par les passager lors de leurs voyages dans le pays, étant donné qu’ils subissent moins de retard lors de leurs déplacements. La connection internet à haut débit est une réalité partout dans le pays et rend la vie plus facile à gérer dans tous ses aspects, dans cet ère de l’information.
5. Umuganda L’Umuganda est une solution locale qui rassemble les membres d’une communauté pour la nettoyer et aborder les questions qui l’affectent, ceci dans le but de créer une communauté orientée vers les solutions, encourageant l’unité et la propreté. L’Afrique a, à plusieurs comptes, été chargée de trouver des solutions locales à ses défis. L’Umuganda, qui est organisé tous les derniers samedis du mois, n’est qu’un example de la sorte parmi d’autres, qui pousse la population à ne pas faire que suivre d’obscures tendances venues d’ailleurs qui ne fonctionneraient jamais dans leur contexte. Contrairement à d’autres grandes villes sur le continent, il n’y a ni décharges le long des routes du Rwanda, ni sacs plastiques salissant les rues. Pourquoi attendre une aide étrangère pour financer le nettoyage des rues lorsque l’on dispose de l’avantage de son propre peuple. Être authentique dans nos diverses cultures est un élément important; l’autre est de se doter de normes objectives pour l’individu ainsi que pour le bien collectif de la communauté. Cela indique la nécessité de ne pas réaffirmer l’attitude de « victime des circonstances », mais plutôt d’adopter l’attitude de créateurs de notre histoire africaine.

lus on voyage en Afrique, plus on a envie d’y voyager. C’est un besoin qui ne peut être satisfait qu’en décollant vers sa prochaine aventure africaine. Comme toute aventure de la vie cependant, plus on fait l’expérience de quelque chose, plus il est difficile de trouver quelque chose de nouveau et de complètement différent. Ayant grandi avec les parcs nationaux africains, j’ai toujours convoité l’Afrique de l’Est, en particulier le Kenya et la Tanzanie : la terre du légendaire peuple Maasaï, le Kilimanjaro et le cratère du Ngorongoro. Cependant la Tanzanie abrite également une autre légende : le Parc National du Serengeti, qui représente peut-être la quintessence du mot safari pour les passionnés d’Afrique est un endroit regorgeant de hordes de créatures sauvages. Il est également assez pertinent que le mot safari, qui signifie « voyage », provienne d’une des langues natives de la région, le Kiswahili, qui y est parlé.

he more you travel in Africa, the more you want to. It is a craving that can only be appeased by setting off on that next African adventure. Like anything in life however, the more you experience something the greater the challenge to find that something new and altogether different. Having grown up with southern Africa’s national parks I have always lusted after visiting East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania: the land of legendary Masai people, Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro Crater. Yet Tanzania is also home to another legend: the Serengeti National Park, perhaps the epitome of the word safari for Africa aficionados and a place of hordes of wild creatures. It is also rather fitting that the word safari meaning ‘journey’ stems from one of the native languages, KiSwahili, spoken here.

L’écosystème du Serengeti-Mara, connait une grande renommée pour son immense migration annuelle d’animaux sauvages : plus d’un million de gnous, 250 000 zèbres, 12 000 élands, 500 000 gazelles et une pléthore de prédateurs affamés présentent une des plus grandes manifestations de créatures sauvages restant sur la planète aujourd’hui. Chaque année - lors de la plus grande migration de mammifères restant au monde - les gnous se déplacent dans cet écosystème dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre. Leurs mouvements précis sont influencés par les précipitations et le pâturage mais sont pourvus d’associations saisonnières distinctes qui tournent autour des terres de vêlage de la saison des pluies et des ressources en eau de la saison sèche. Ces animaux entreprennent un trek annuel cyclique d’environ 800km sur de plaines qui paraissent interminables, à la recherche d’eau et de nourriture et dans le but de se reproduire. Leur voyage est semé de nombreuses embuches en fonction du moment de l’année. les hordes de gnous passent par le Couloir Occidental du parc en direction du Nord au cours des mois de juin et juillet qui est également la période de reproduction lorsque les gnous mâles marquent des territoires temporaires et courtisent les femelles. Ceux qui visiteront le parc à cette période de l’année seront entourés de gnous jour et nuit - combattant, grognant et s’accouplant de manière totalement insensible à votre présence. La nuit ils s’écrasent
The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is renowned for its immense annual wildlife migration: more than a million wildebeest, 250 000 zebra, 12 000 eland, 500 000 gazelles and a glut of hungry predators cast one of the greatest wildlife displays left on the Planet today. Each year – in the world’s largest remaining mammal migration – the wildebeest move through this ecosystem in a clockwise direction. Their precise movements are influenced by rainfall and grazing but have distinct seasonal associations that revolve around rainy season calving grounds and dry season water availability. These animals undertake an annual cyclical trek of about 800km over seemingly infinite plains in search of food and water and to breed. Their journey is plagued with many challenges depending on time of year. The wildebeest herds pass through the Western Corridor of the Park heading northwards during June and July which is also the breeding season when bulls demarcate temporary territories and court females. Those that visit at this time will be surrounding by wildebeest day and night – fighting, grunting and mating totally blinded to your presence. At night they crash into the soft canvas walls of your tent and fighting and courting continues unabated, even on moonlit nights. The majority of the herds then head into the Masai Mara in Kenya. They have to however overcome one major obstacle though – crossing the crocodile-infested Grumeti River. The herds then move south again in November/December. During February / March the calves are born in the southern Serengeti, on the short grass plains. Once the calves are strong enough to move, around April/ May, they begin the trek all over again, as they have done for forever. In short, it is one of those must-see wildlife spectacles. We based our first visit to Serengeti, arguably Africa’s premier park, in the Western Corridor in an area called the Grumeti Reserve: A 140,000 hectare concession which borders the park. Being February I was wondering how much wildlife we would see as the wildebeest should be on the southern plains busy calving. My concerns were short-lived though – on the drive from the airstrip to our camp we saw more game than anywhere else I have yet experienced in Africa. The plains were not wall-to-wall wildebeest

Les hordes se déplacent ensuite à nouveau vers le Sud en Novembre/Décembre. Au cours des mois de Février/Mars, les bébés gnous naissent dans la partie Sud du Serengeti, sur les plaines d’herbes courtes. Une fois qu’ils sont suffisamment forts pour se déplacer, autour des mois d’Avril-Mai, ils recommencent à nouveau leur trek, comme ils l’ont toujours fait. En résumé, c’est un des spectacles sauvages à voir absolument. Nous avons organisé notre première visite au Serengeti, sans doute le meilleur parc africain, dans la partie Ouest dans une zone appelée la Réserve Grumeti : une concession de 140 000 hectares à la frontière du parc. La visite ayant eu lieu en février, je me demandais quelle quantité d’animaux sauvages nous allions voir, étant donné que les gnous devaient se trouver dans les plaines du Sud, occupés à mettre bas. Mes inquiétudes furent cependant de courte durée - sur le trajet entre la piste d’atterrissage et notre camp, nous avons pu voir plus d’animaux que je n’en avais encore jamais vu ailleurs en Afrique. Les plaines n’étaient pas couvertes de gnous mais plutôt parsemées d’un mélange incroyable d’espèces d’animaux du parc : les plus répandus étant les topis, zèbres, gnous à barbe blanche, et les gazelles de Thomson et de Grant. Le plus exaltant fut l’incroyable démesure du paysage; on peut rapidement percevoir le fonctionnement d’ensemble d’un écosystème complet, préservé de l’homme et de ses modifications. « C’est comme cela que ça doit être », ai-je pensé. Cela nous a pris des heures pour atteindre le camp tant il y avait de choses à voir, à sentir et à photographier mais nous avons finalement dû abdiquer et admettre que « demain est un autre jour ». Nous avons séjourné à Sabora Tented Camp - le luxe et l’exclusivité d’un endroit tel que celui-ci ont un prix mais il existe plusieurs autres options de logement dans tout le parc. Notre camp ressemblait à un décor du grand classique « Out of Africa ». Placé au beau milieu d’une plaine herbeuse ouverte ce camp est doté d’un très distinct style des années 1920, complet grâce aux objets d’arts et atours européens de cette époque révolue qui y sont placés. Le parc national a été crée en 1951 et le nom Serengeti trouve ses origines dans le mot Maasaï Serengit qui signifie « plaine sans fin ». Cependant, les habitats au sein de cette

concession ne sont pas seulement des plaines d’herbes courtes. On trouve également des zones forestières boisées le long de la rivière Grumeti ainsi que d’autres cours d’eau, et des forêts d’acacias et de balanites qui garantissent une faune et une flore variées. Nos journées ont commencé par un lever de soleil au-dessus du Serengeti, suivi par des safaris à la recherche des habitants du parc : on compte plus de 400 espèces d’oiseaux et il existe également 75 espèces de mammifères, il y a donc beaucoup à voir. En ce qui concerne les prédateurs, nous n’avons pas été déçus. Nous avons trouvé une lionne qui se montrait très friande de chasse au phacochère, alors qu’une autre exhibait fièrement ses prouesses de grimpeuse d’arbres. Le Serengeti est l’habitat typique du guépard et nous avons pu apercevoir cette magnifique créature à plusieurs reprises. Ce sont les hyènes tachetées que nous avons pu voir le plus, en terme de prédateurs - leur tête dépassant souvent simplement des herbes hautes parmi les importantes hordes d’animaux. Parmi les autres animaux de la mégafaune que nous avons pu voir on comptait des buffles, des girafes Maasaï à la robe tachetée si distinctive. Le Serengeti présente une foule d’oiseaux endémiques tels que les inséparables de Fischer, des francolins à poitrine grise, des histurgopses à queue

What was even more inspiring was the epic scale of the landscape; one quickly gains a sense of a holistically functioning ecosystem totally untouched or modified by man. ‘This is how it is supposed to be’, I thought. It took us hours to get to camp as there was so much to see, smell and photograph but we finally had to admit defeat and admit ‘tomorrow is another day’. We stayed at Sabora Tented Camp – luxury and exclusivity like this does not come cheap but there are several other accommodation options throughout the Park. Our camp was like something straight out of the classic movie, ‘Out of Africa’. Placed on an open grassy plain this camp has a distinct 1920s style complete with European finery and artefacts of this bygone era. The national park was created in 1951 and the name Serengeti originates from a Maasai word Serengit

meaning ‘endless plain’. The habitats within the concession are not only short, grassy plains however. Forested woodland is found along the Grumeti River and other river courses together with Acacia/Balanites woodlands ensuring a diverse fauna and flora. Our days started with a sunrise over the Serengeti followed by game drives in search of the Park’s inhabitants: the bird count is over 400 species and there are around 75 mammal species, so there is a lot to see. When it came to predators, we were not disappointed. A lioness was found showing a keen interest in hunting warthog, while another pride displayed their tree-climbing antics. The Serengeti is textbook cheetah habitat and we had several sightings of these stunning creatures. Spotted hyaena was the most common predator – their heads often simply seen sticking out the grass amongst the large animal herds. Other megafauna included buffalo, distinctly-patterned Masai giraffe and elephant. The Serengeti also offers a host of endemic birds like Fischer’s Lovebird, Grey-breasted Spurfowl, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Grey-crested Helmet-Shrike and Usambiro Barbet. As the avifauna is so different to southern Africa, I racked up an amazing 45 new bird species! Most of our time was spent on the grassy plains, apart from one morning trip to the Grumeti River. On our visit the river was peaceful, but I could just picture those scenes that will unfold in a few months time: a throng of wildebeest crashing through the water and 18-foot crocodiles picking them off. We even took a short stroll in the mostly dry river – black-and-white colobus monkeys were in the riparian trees above us and a Schalow’s Turaco called in the distance. Our visit, although not in the time of the spectacular river crossings or migrating herds of animals still exceeded my expectations. Large multi-species herds of grazers were easy to find, predators were very much in attendance and migratory birds were everywhere. Missing the peak migration season turned out to be a good move; we felt like we were the only visitors to this picturesque concession. In Kenya’s Masai-Mara, the peak time to experience this concentration is from August through to October when the herds congregate along the Mara River and dramatic crossings of thousands of animals can be witnessed in the area around Governors’ Camp. Nestling in the riverine forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, Governors’ Camp is in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve and boasts arguably the best camp location in this unique ecosystem. The setting of the camp is so spectacular that almost a century ago it was reserved, exclusively, for Kenya’s colonial governors. Established in 1972, the camp has 37 classic safari-style tents – some lining the riverbank, while others gaze out across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. The tents are big, bright and allow in lots of natural light. Each is en suite and has a private veranda. Governors’ Camp boasts a Silver Eco-Rating from Ecotourism Kenya.

Nous avons passé le plus clair de notre temps sur les plaines herbeuses, à part lors d’une matinée où nous avons voyagé vers la rivière Grumeti. Lors de notre visite la rivière était plutôt calme, mais je pouvais facilement m’imaginer les scènes qui se dérouleront dans quelques mois à peine : une multitude de gnous s’écrasant dans les eaux et les crocodiles de plus de 5 mètres de long les attrapant au passage. Nous avons même pu faire une courte promenade dans la rivière en grande partie asséchée - des colobes noirs et blancs se trouvaient dans les arbres de la forêt lacustre au-dessus de nos têtes et un touraco de Schalow a lancé un appel au loin. Notre visite, même si elle n’a pas eu lieu au moment des spectaculaires traversées de rivières, ou des migrations des hordes d’animaux, a tout de même dépassé mes attentes. Les grandes hordes de plusieurs espèces de ruminants furent faciles à trouver, les prédateurs étaient au rendez-vous et les oiseaux migrateurs étaient partout. Manquer le point culminant de la saison migratoire fut au final une bonne décision; nous avons eu l’impression d’être les seuls visiteurs dans cette concession pittoresque. Dans le Masai-Mara au Kenya, le meilleur moment pour faire l’expérience d’une telle concentration d’animaux se situe entre les mois d’août et octobre, lorsque les hordes convergent le long de de la rivière Mara et qu’ont lieu de spectaculaires traversées de milliers d’animaux dans la zone autour de Governors’ Camp. Niché dans la forêt le long des berges sinueuses de la rivière Mara, le Governors’ Camp est au coeur de la Réserve Nationale du Masai Mara et peut se vanter de ce qui est potentiellement le meilleur emplacement dans cet écosystème unique. La disposition du camp est si spectaculaire qu’il y a presque un siècle, il était exclusivement réservé aux gouverneurs coloniaux du Kenya. Établi en 1972, le camp est doté de 37 tentes de style safari - certaines le long des berges de la rivière, d’autres contemplant les immenses plaines du Masai Mara. Les tentes sont grandes, lumineuses et laissent entrer énormément de lumière naturelle. Chacune forme une suite et dispose d’une véranda privée. Governors’ Camp peut se vanter d’avoir obtenu la note Argent à l’écoévaluation d’Écotourisme Kenya. Le problème lorsque l’on vit en Afrique, c’est qu’au final on a ça dans le sang ; l’Afrique attire depuis des siècles des romantiques et des explorateurs, désireux de découvrir ses particularités magiques. En tant que citoyens d’un continent souvent en crise dans une partie ou une autre, nous nous plaignons souvent de la difficulté d’y vivre. Cependant, pouvoir faire l’expérience d’endroits tels que le Serengeti semble alimenter le désir de continuer et de se battre encore un jour de plus. À quel autre endroit est-il possible d’être captivé par le parfum de la terre après un orage ; de voir une impressionnante myriade d’animaux ; et de rester bouche bée devant la dimension épique des spectacles de la vie sauvage d’ici ? Voyager en Afrique devrait s’accompagner d’un avertissement de santé, c’est une activité qui peut être addictive.
The problem with living in Africa is that it eventually gets into your blood; Africa has been attracting romantics and explorers for centuries keen to experience its magical attributes. As citizens of a continent often in turmoil in one or other part, we often complain how tough it is to live here. Yet to experience places like the Serengeti seems to feed that desire to carry on and fight another day. Where else can one be captivated by the smell of the soil after a thunderstorm; see a staggering profusion of animals; and be left in awe at epic scale of the wildlife theatrics like here? Travel in Africa should come with a health warning that it tends to get addictive.

The Afrocentric culture in the Age of Information By /Par Gloria Iribagiza The Fourth Industrial Revolution has come with a bang and it seems like our culture’s survival is at stake. Yet there appears to be a parallel notion when technology and culture are spoken of in the same sentence. As much as the two seem far apart, many societies in Africa are quickly merging technology and cultures to make a beautiful shift in the way we form opinions, stories, ideas and vibrancy that keeps evolving for the betterment of our societies. Much has been said about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, an era that has inevitably advanced and continues to advance its way into our lives. Living on the resource-rich continent of Africa does not negate the impact of technology on our diverse cultures. We are awash with information and this presents another challenge to retaining the authenticity of the wellkept and rooted norms, values and beliefs on the continent. In Africa, this would nicely be wrapped under the umbrella of Ubuntu as fostered by the keepers of the continent’s ancient traditions to assert that, ‘a person is a person through another person’. This points to the existence of a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. In other words, humanity exits for humanity—not for robotics. But the robots are here to stay, they are not going anywhere—the I.o.T (Internet of Things), A.I (Artificial Intelligence), Data Revolutions with FinTechs, RegTechs, TechHubs and a lot more iHubs are exploding with fantastic innovations by the minute. Our culture is changing fast, yet there is no reason for the two—technology and culture— to not blend. After all, technology is supposed to be a means to an end and not the end in itself. Well harnessed technology has the ability to enhance cultures and integrate the interconnectedness of the diversity that Africa has to present to the rest of the world.

La culture Afrocentriste à l’ère de l’information La quatrième révolution industrielle a démarré en trombe et il semblerait qu’elle mette en jeu la survie de notre culture. Cependant il semblerait également qu’une nouvelle notion se soit créée en parallèle, lorsque la technologie et la culture sont associées dans une même phrase. Même si les deux paraissent particulièrement éloignées, de nombreuses sociétés africaines fusionnent rapidement la technologie et les cultures pour changer la façon dont nous formons nos opinions, écrivons nos histoires, trouvons nos idées et puisons notre vitalité, des aspects qui continuent d’évoluer pour l’amélioration de nos sociétés. Beaucoup a déjà été dit au sujet de la Quatrième Révolution Industrielle, une ère qui a connu une inévitable progression, et continue de prendre de plus de place dans nos vies. Vivre sur le continent africain, si riche en ressources soit-il, n’invalide en rien l’impact de la technologie sur nos diverses cultures. Nous sommes inondés d’information, et cela représente un nouveau défi pour le maintient de l’authenticité des normes, valeurs et croyances si bien ancrées et si bien gardées sur le continent. En Afrique, l’ensemble de ces éléments représentent l’esprit d’Ubuntu, tel qu’il a été entretenu par les gardiens des anciennes traditions du continent, et qui affirme que « je suis ce que je suis grâce à ce que nous sommes tous». Ceci démontre l’existence du lien universel du partage qui connecte toute l’humanité. En d’autres termes, l’humanité existe pour l’humanité - et non pour la robotique. Mais les robots sont là pour rester, ils ne vont nulle part : l’internet des objets, l’IA (intelligence artificielle), les révolutions des données avec les FinTechs (technologies financières), RegTechs (technologies de la réglementation), les TechHubs (pôles de technologie) et autres iHubs (pôles d’innovation) qui débordent

Technology advancements will come with a complexity of changes in cultures. This is in the sense of the way people interact, think and learn as they master new ways of living. Since there exists no static cultures, embracing a dynamic culture that includes technology seems like the best way to retain our long-kept values that embrace the African wisdom of Ubuntu. Here is why: We need to move away from the delusional belief that, having access to endless streams of information will produce more knowledge and hence result into more wisdom. The opposite is quite true. With so much information being absorbed by this generation, wisdom is becoming more difficult to attain because it is in scarcity. Absorbing too much information and failing to place and apply it into the right context of our diverse cultures, is what will mess up our perceptions, rather than enrich it. It is not about knowing and having an opinion about everything so that we can appear to be informed
d’innovations qu’ils produisent à la minute. Notre culture connait un changement rapide, cependant il n’y a aucune raison pour que ces deux éléments - technologie et culture - ne puissent fonctionner en symbiose. Après tout, la technologie est censée être un moyen pour une fin, et non une fin en soi. Une technologie bien exploitée est en mesure de mettre en valeur les cultures et d’intégrer l’interconnectivité de la diversité que l’Afrique a à présenter au reste du monde. Les avancées technologiques s’accompagneront de changements complexes dans les cultures. Cela va dans le sens de la façon dont les gens interagissent, pensent et apprennent alors que leurs façons de vivre évoluent. Étant donné qu’aucune culture n’est immobile, il semblerait que la meilleure manière de procéder soit d’adopter une culture dynamique qui engloberait la technologie, ce qui permettrait maintenir nos valeurs longtemps gardées, en y ajoutant la sagesse africaine de l’Ubuntu. Voici pourquoi : Nous devons cesser de nous bercer d’illusions : un accès à des flux constants d’informations ne produira pas plus de connaissance et n’aura donc pas pour conséquence plus de sagesse. Bien au contraire. Avec les quantités d’informations absorbées par cette génération, la sagesse est un état difficile à atteindre car elle est rare. Absorber trop d’informations, et ne pas réussir à les placer et à les appliquer dans le bon contexte de nos diverses cultures, c’est ce qui va fausser nos perceptions plutôt que de les enrichir. La question n’est pas de connaître ou d’avoir une opinion sur tous les sujets pour paraître informé parmi nos pairs. Ce genre d’approche ne peut que créer une masse de personnes formant des opinions à la hâte, sans fondement, sans vérification, et n’ayant pu résister à l’épreuve du temps. Ils deviennent réactionnaires et se créent des impressions superficielles en se basant sur des morceaux fragmentés d’information - cela ne peut conduire qu’à une divergence culturelle. Les africains devraient plutôt s’efforcer de pleinement comprendre cette ère de la technologie, de l’intégrer dans leurs valeurs existantes et de les transposer en un dispositif adapté à chaque contexte, et ce pour le bien de la population. C’est cela qui permettra d’enrichir les diverses valeurs culturelles que nous défendons, alors que nous avançons rapidement de la compréhension vers la création de la connaissance et par conséquent l’atteinte la sagesse. En adoptant cette approche vis à vis des vagues d’informations qui déferlent sur nos cultures, nous résisterons, tel un édifice

They become reactionary and form superficial impressions on the basis of fragmented bits of information— this only results in a cultural discordance.

Obviously, processes are accelerated in various institutions, less human error is experienced and greater electronic connectivity is created because of technology. However, this lessens interpersonal human interactions and the opportunities that foster grit, inspiration, motivation and selfrestraint. These values are taught through Ubuntu that is ingrained in our cultures and these can only be passed on from one generation to another through human interaction.
Africans should instead strive to attain true understanding of this technological era, integrate it into the already existing values and translate it into what works in each context for the good of the people. This is what will enhance the diverse cultural values we uphold as we move swiftly through understanding to form knowledge and consequently attain wisdom. Taking this approach to the waves of information blowing through our cultures is like a building that stands the test of shifting winds and not collapse.
Therefore, in the age of information, our African culture should aspire to teach us so that we can learn to absorb information, in order to develop a unique mastery of who we are and what we want to become. As we transform for the better, this Afrocentric wisdom is what will allow for our diverse cultures to remain an indispensable part of the decision-making processes in our institutions, families and individual lives.
Disruptive technologies once well-harnessed are not an impediment to who we are. They present new dimensions to how policy, businesses, the arts, human rights, social justice and sustainable development can improve livelihoods. For this reason, technology should not be a replacement to culture,

Alors que nous nous transformons pour nous améliorer, c’est la sagesse Afrocentriste qui permettra à nos diverses cultures de rester une part indispensable du processus de prise de décisions dans nos institutions, nos familles et nos vies individuelles. Puisque les peuples ne souhaitent pas juste faire partie de quelque chose de nouveau qui soit déconnecté de leur culture, ils préfèrent être impliqués par et à travers leur culture. La meilleure façon de procéder serait donc d’harmoniser les cultures africaines et leur numérisation.

Tasked by the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), the Biomedical Center (BMC) was at the helm of this important campaign aimed at raising awareness, performing screening and providing immunization against hepatitis B.

Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: It is quite simple, after getting a good medical education in infectious and tropical diseases; I realized I had to bring my skills and knowledge where they were most needed. This happened to be during the post-genocide period, a time in Rwanda when the need was more than obvious. Thus, Biomedical Centre was born at a very opportune moment.

Not short of ambition, DrKaragirwa, is indeed a busy man, demonstrated by the multiple schedule changes that led to our eventual meeting. Following a stream of interruptions by his laboratory technician, who was reporting on the analyses made by their partners BIOSCIENTIA (Germany) and BIOMNIS (France), he finally managed to join us at the table. As he ordered a cappuccino, he lowered his head as if in deep reflection, moments later he raised it, followed by a look that indicated he was ready to begin the interview. Cleared for take-off.
INZOZI: So you had chosen to study biology, to become a medical biologist?

Il travaille à son expansion avec un bâtiment en construction et le coût de cette ambition qui s’élève à dix millions de dollars américains n’a à ce jour été autofinancé qu’au cinquième du budget total.
INZOZI: We are mid-flight at the moment, equipped with the mandatory yellow fever card and valid health insurance. Is there anything else we needed before take-off? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Just a few drugs, including antimalarial treatment. Other than the compulsory yellow fever vaccine, immunization against typhoid fever is recommended for places with poor sanitation. INZOZI: What led you to start BMC?
Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: I still remember vividly the moment I realized (biology) was the field I would enjoy working in. In 1972 – during my 3rd year at the National University of Rwanda- I was in microbiology class and my lecturer Professor Pratt enticed me so much with his teachings that it triggered something within me. I went on to pursue my doctorate studies (PhD) in Kinshasa and the biology classes were still very attractive to me, so I maintained my focus. After four years, I confirmed my study track with a specialization in the field. INZOZI: During your evolution, you were well aware that your home country, Rwanda, which was rebuilding itself, seriously needed your skills… Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Yes. I launched myself in a crazy journey to set up a medical laboratory around the year 2000. The challenges then were medical examinations; the basic ones as well as the more complex but also essential ones, for common

illnesses, such as parasitology tests for urine and stool, thick smear and blood films for malaria detection. Blood count is also important to diagnose anaemia and multiple infections. We started with everything at once. From the onset, a real difficulty was the recruitment of a skilled workforce that could adapt to methods and produce reliable results. I was putting in long hours in order to make up for this lack of qualified staff, on top of working regular lab hours. Little by little, we recruited a few technicians from Congo and Uganda. Today, the landscape has changed, I am proud to have young Rwandans that are trained and competent. INZOZI: How do the challenges and important health issues in Rwanda today fare in comparison to when BMC first opened? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: At the time the issues were infectious diseases, including HIV-AIDS and all of the illnesses that come with it. Malaria was wreaking havoc, tuberculosis was a widespread disease and was difficult to treat, and there were also all the early childhood infections. Currently, as in other countries, including the socalled “developed” ones, chronic diseases have overtaken infectious diseases. Here, we are talking about diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, viral hepatitis B and C in particular. INZOZI: How does BMC address those challenges? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: By offering a wide range of examinations, screenings and diagnosis for most of these diseases. INZOZI: On to major health issues faced globally; what are they, according to you, and how can they be tackled? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Many parts of the world are currently dealing with an aging population. This phenomenon goes hand in hand with a full range of cancers that we have to find new ways to care for. Africa is an exception, given that its population is much younger. Still, the youth need to be sensitized in order to prevent some pathology through healthier lifestyles like eating well and exercising regularly. This trend seems to have already started based on the people I see running in the streets of Kigali at every hour of the day. INZOZI: Aside from the obvious lack of resources, does the African health system have what it takes to face the challenges we are talking about? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: The efficiency of Africa’s healthcare system depends more on the good design of public health policies rather than on modern infrastructure. The latter is less essential than a perfect understanding and effective implementation of health policies. INZOZI: Tell us about your short and medium-term projects. Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: I would like to strengthen BMC’s organizational quality systems so that we can achieve national and even international accreditation. In order to do so, a series of organizational procedures need to be established, which would serve as a reference for all professional operations.

INZOZI : Nous sommes en plein vol, en ce moment. Nous sommes obligatoirement munis de notre carte jaune et d’une assurance santé. Est-ce tout ce dont nous avions besoin avant de prendre de la hauteur ? Dr Alphonse Kargirwa: Juste quelques médicaments notamment celui contre le paludisme. Il faut absolument y avoir pensé. Après avoir fait ses vaccins dont l’obligatoire est celui contre la fièvre jaune tandis que celle de la fièvre typhoïde est recommandée pour les lieux à faible hygiène. INZOZI : Quels sont les mobiles, puis le déclic qui vous décident à créer le BMC ? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: C’est simple. J’ai pris conscience que cela adviendrait après avoir fait de bonnes études de médecine en maladies infectieuses et tropicales. Je devais apporter ces compétences où c’était nécessaire et il s’est fait que cette période coïncidait exactement avec la période postgénocide. Sur place au Rwanda, la nécessité était plus qu’évidente et le Bio Médical Center est né de manière très opportune. INZOZI : Vous aviez donc opté pour des études de biologie médicale, pour devenir médecin biologiste… Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Moi, je me rappelle bien le moment précis où j’ai
senti que c’est ce domaine là qui me plaisait. J’étais en cours de microbiologie, en 3ième année de candidature à l’Université Nationale du Rwanda en 1972 et puis le Professeur Pratt qui dispensait ce cours m’a tellement appâté que le déclic était ‘’enclenché’’. Dans la suite, je suis allé étudier à Kinshasa pour la deuxième phase des études de médecine, à savoir le doctorat et les autres cours de la sphère biologique m’ont autant plu que je n’ai pas changé d’orientation. L’évidence était là. Cela dure quatre ans. Quelques années plus tard viendra la spécialisation pour confirmer le parcours. INZOZI : Dans votre évolution, vous savez pertinemment que votre pays d’origine, le Rwanda en reconstruction a sérieusement besoin de vos compétences… Dr Alphonse Karagirwa : Oui. Je me lance dans un parcours ‘’de folie’’ quant à la mise sur pied d’un laboratoire d’analyses médicales et ce, dès l’an 2000. Le défi concernait les examens aussi bien basiques que certaines analyses plus complexes mais indispensables pour des maladies somme toute courantes. Les examens de parasitologie dans les urines et les selles, la recherche du paludisme dans la goutte épaisse-frotti sanguin. La numération des éléments du sang si importante pour le diagnostic des anémies et de multiples infections.
Nous avons donc tout commencé en même temps. La vraie difficulté était de trouver les bons collaborateurs suffisamment compétents pour adapter les méthodes et donner des résultats fiables. Il a fallu que j’y travaille de longues heures pour pallier à ce déficit en personnel qualifié. J’ai mis la main à la pâte en travaillant moi-même au Labo et puis, petit à petit, nous avons recruté quelques techniciens, en allant les chercher à l’étranger, au Congo et en Uganda. Aujourd’hui, je suis fier d’avoir de jeunes compatriotes formés et compétents. INZOZI : Quels étaient à l’époque, et quels sont à ce jour, les défis et les grands enjeux de santé auxquels était et est confronté le Rwanda ? Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: A l’époque, l’enjeu, c’était les maladies infectieuses dont le VIH Sida et toute sa cohorte de maladies qu’il complique. La malaria faisait des ravages, la tuberculose restait une maladie répandue et difficile à soigner et toutes les infections de la petite enfance. Actuellement, à l’image d’autres pays dont ceux dits ‘’développés’’, les maladies chroniques ont pris le pas sur celles infectieuses. Il s’agit du diabète, de l’hypertension artérielle, des cancers, des hépatites virales B et C notamment. INZOZI : Comment le BMC y répond-il ?

Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Simplement, en offrant une large gamme d’examens de dépistage et de diagnostic pour la plupart de ces maladies. INZOZI : Parlons des enjeux majeurs de santé auxquels cette fois, notre monde en général doit faire face aujourd’hui. Quels sont-ils d’après vous et comment les relever ?
Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: I am fully aware of this challenge and it almost keeps me up at night.
Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Un peu partout, nous assistons au vieillissement des populations, avec notamment le développement d’un tas de cancers pour lesquels il faut découvrir de nouvelles méthodes de prise en charge. L’Afrique fait figure d’exception avec des populations beaucoup plus jeunes. Ces dernières devraient faire l’objet d’une plus grande sensibilisation en vue de prévenir les pathologies par une hygiène de vie qui comprend une alimentation saine et une pratique régulière de sport. Cela m’a l’air d’être en cours, lorsque je vois des joggers un peu partout dans les rues de Kigali à tout moment, de jour comme de nuit. Tenez : hier, j’ai pris le pouls de l’un d’entre eux. C’est un jeune homme qui a à peine la trentaine et dont l’habitude, après le travail est d’escalader une colline. Cette pratique lui a valu de renforcer son muscle cardiaque dont le pouls a par conséquent une fréquence similaire à celle des grands sportifs.

INZOZI : Le système de santé africain, audelà du sempiternel ‘’manque de moyens’’ a-t-il les armes pour faire face à ces défis dont nous parlons ?

As for laboratory technicians, it has been going so well that they will soon reach the required level of standards. In the mid to long-term, I would like to purchase a building with modern facilities dedicated to the development of our activities by 2020. INZOZI: 2020 is barely two and a half years from now…
Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: L’efficacité des systèmes de soins en Afrique dépend plus d’une bonne conception des politiques de santé publique que d’infrastructures certes modernes mais moins impératives qu’une parfaite connaissance et mise en place effective de ces politiques. INZOZI : Parlez-nous de vos projets à court et moyen termes… Dr Alphonse Karagirwa: Je voudrais renforcer les systèmes de qualité dans l’organisation du Bio Medical Center pour arriver à terme à une agréation nationale, voire internationale. Pour ce faire, établir un système de procédure organisationnelle qui servirait de référence pour toutes les opérations professionnelles. Dans un même esprit d’émulation, faire bénéficier au personnel administratif des formations continues pour acquérir un niveau de professionnalisme encore plus important. Celui des laborantins a prit un tel élan qu’il sera très bientôt aux normes standards. A moyen et long termes, acquérir un bâtiment avec des locaux modernes dédiés à l’expansion de nos activités à l’horizon 2020. INZOZI : Deux mille vingt, c’est dans à peine deux ans et demi… Dr Alphonse Karagirwa : J’en ai parfaitement conscience et c’est un challenge qui m’empêche presque de dormir.

IMAGINE WE A matchmaker between Rwandans and literature by Davy ingabire

“I am what Google calls a logophile,” this is how Dominique Uwase Alonga, 24, describes herself. She is the founder and director of Imagine We Rwanda, a social enterprise and publishing house through which she shares her passion for reading and writing with Rwandans, especially the youth and school-aged children.
B
ack in 1960, the historian, writer and Malian traditionalist Amadou Hampâté Bâ made the now iconic statement, “In Africa, when an elder dies, it is like a library burning down.” This famous quote reminds us of the integral role of oral tradition in the African culture, which remains relevant, more than half a century later. Yet, in this day and age the time given to the elders to recount history is getting more and more negligible and in certain places even non-existent. This ever so important oral tradition, if we are to keep the stories of our nations alive, is in distress. And if this history, the adventures of our heroes and lessons of our tragedies are to survive, it needs to transform into other forms of literature: writing to only name one. The work of Imagine We Rwanda is set in that direction; it is led by a team of passionate young people traveling across the country to promote reading and writing, and

mobilizing partners across the world to make sure their work produces the expected outcome. Upon completing her studies in media, specializing in public relations and events production in India, Dominique came home and started working for a local NGO but it did not take long for her to realize she had greater ambitions including working for herself. In August 2014, a golden opportunity arose for Dominique to pursue her true passion of reading and writing as she submitted a project to the Digital Change Makers programme, a national competition that supports social development projects. This move was motivated by her personal experience, “I was born in DRC and I grew up in Rwanda, so I was completely francophone in the mid-2000s when my family moved to the USA. It was hard in the beginning

I know how important reading is.” In November 2014, her project was selected, spurring the launch of Imagine We Rwanda in January of the following year. Dominique recalls the first few months not being easy but having left her job, she was intent on making it work. Imagine We Rwanda was initially created as an NGO with a mission to encourage Rwandans to read, to appreciate the written word and to develop their stories. “Our stories as Africans and more specifically as Rwandans are so beautiful and full of wit, we wish that there were more books which would make Rwandans proud, and enable foreigners to understand Rwanda as we live it,” Dominique added, whilst she welcomed us in

the reading space for underprivileged children, hosted in Imagine We Rwanda’s offices in a quaint Kigali neighborhood. It is within this framework that 6000 books were collected -through a collaboration with American, Australian and local partners - and redistributed to more than thirteen underprivileged schools and public libraries. It is also how more than five hundred stories written by local writers were shared during the various editions of the KagireInkuru competition, initiated by the team at Imagine We Rwanda. Today, the NGO has transitioned and become a social enterprise that also acts as a publishing house for Rwandan authors. Two books have already been published and two more are in the pipeline. “Operating solely as an NGO was quite heavy as we depended extensively on partners and this limited us in a way. The work of Imagine We Rwanda has been recognized several times, including by the Imbuto Foundation, the Akilah Institute and the Ministry of Youth and ICT. And it is safe to say that this is only the beginning, given that the organisation still has many projects, including setting up libraries in the pediatric rooms of five hospitals, which is already ongoing, and publishing more work by local authors. Imagine We Rwanda aspires to publish four more books by the end of the year. No doubt that the succession to oral tradition is on its way.

The night goes dim slowly and the stars come out, dotting the sky with small light. It rained earlier and the grass is still wet. By Sofie Neiman For the past twelve years, the Rwanda Film Festival has promoted cinema in Kigali and the surrounding areas. This year, the festival returns for thirteenth time. Running from the 23rd until the 29th of October, festival organizers will screen films in Kigali and the rural areas outside of the capital. These screenings will be accompanied by special programs, ranging from fashion shows to concerts to classes and panels. Organizers are committed to supporting Rwandan filmmakers, as well as artists and cinema experts from around the continent and globe.
The festival also has a bold new theme of frontiers. Films and accompanying discussions will explore what it means to break and create barriers, both personal and political, physical and imagined. Organizers aim to examine a wealth of issues related to the idea of frontiers, from the changing meaning of gender, to new technologies to society and development. The Luo
Africa is an amazing continent;at every turn there is a beautiful language, a delicious dish and colourful traditions and culture. It is rich in every sense imaginable and with fifty-four countries one is guaranteed at least fifty-four unforgettable experiences.
W
ith that anticipation in mind, let's set base in Kenya for a moment. Kenya is a country located in East Africa with a population of over forty six million. Spread across the nation are roughly forty-two documented tribes which means that the cultural diversity is vast and intense; from the Kikuyu in Central Kenya, the semi-nomadic Maasai in Southern Kenya to the Mijikenda down by the coast. While these ethnic communities give Kenyans a sense of pride and identity, there have been times when citizens shy away from openly saying where they come from. This is due to tribal clashes as a result of among other things, shared water resources, grazing land and most recently governance-related discord. These matters have not taken away from the fact that the tribes in Kenya are rich in culture and traditions that have stood the test of time. Now, that we have you here, how about I tell you about the Luo tribe of Kenya, and the rites of passage that make them who they are. Most Luos live in Western Kenya mainly around Lake Victoria where their ancestors settled in the 19th Century. However, due to modernization and urbanization, a good number have moved to study and work across the country. During holidays, they hold gatherings back home, dala. You will hear animated conversations ranging from politics to folklores in the native language, Dholuo. A story is told of a legendary hero called Luanda Magere, Luanda meaning ‘rock’ and Magere, ‘the one that builds’. He possessed unearthly powers and his flesh was made of stones. Arrows, spears or clubs simply deflected and that made him invincible during war. Tired of losing all the time,

une population d’environ quarante millions d’habitants. Il existe environ quarantedeux tribus documentées réparties sur tout le pays, ce qui signifie que la diversité culturelle est importante et intense ; des Kikuyu dans le centre, aux semi-nomades Maasaï dans le Sud, aux Mijikenda sur la côte. Bien que ces communautés ethniques soient source de fierté et d’identité pour les Kenyans, il y a pourtant eu des périodes où les citoyens évitaient de parler de la région d’où ils venaient. Cela est dû aux affrontements tribaux causés, entre autres, par le partage des ressources en eau, en pâturages et plus récemment, aux discordes liées à la gouvernance. Ces questions ne retirent rien au fait que les tribus kenyanes soient extrêmement riches de traditions et de cultures qui ont su résister à l’épreuve du temps. Maintenant que vous êtes ici, que diriez-vous d’en apprendre un peu plus au sujet de la tribu des Luo du Kenya, et leurs rites de passage qui font d’eux ce qu’ils sont. La plupart des Luo vivent dans l’Ouest du Kenya, principalement autour du Lac Victoria, où leurs ancêtres se sont installés au 19ème siècle. Cependant, à cause de la modernisation et de l’urbanisation, un bon nombre d’entre eux se sont déplacés, pour étudier et travailler dans le reste du pays. Lors des vacances, ils organisent des réunions

Il était doté de pouvoirs surnaturels et sa chair était faite de pierres. Les flèches, les lances et les massues ne faisaient que rebondir sur lui, le rendant invincible pendant les combats. Fatigués de perdre constamment, les Nandis, alors ennemis jurés des Luo, décidèrent de donner en mariage une de leurs plus belles filles à Luanda Magere. Elle l’espionnerait pour eux et découvrirait sa faiblesse. Après quelques temps, elle découvrit que son ombre était faite de chair, et qu’un seul coup de couteau porté au coeur pourrait le tuer. Elle s’en retourna chez son peuple avec cette révélation et les Nandis purent enfin gagner la bataille contre les Luo. Les aînés des Luo, jodongo, l’avait pourtant prévenu de ne pas se marier en dehors de sa tribu, mais il n’y avait pas prêté attention. Cela lui en coûta la vie. Vous comprendrez donc pourquoi les cérémonies de mariage sont prises très au sérieux jusqu’à ce jour. La première série de cérémonie est Ayie (j’accepte) où la famille de l’homme se rend dans la famille de la femme pour déclarer qu’il est intéressé par celle-ci. Les deux

familles apprennent à se connaître, puis planifient une seconde visite, cette fois dans la maison de famille de l’homme. Les parents de la femme veulent s’assurer que leur fille est entre de bonnes mains et disposera d’un endroit où dormir. La dernière de cette série de cérémonies est nyombo, qui a lieu au domicile de la femme et où l’homme et sa famille doivent payer une dote. Une fois que les deux parties se sont accordées sur le montant, l’homme et la femme sont libres de vivre ensemble en tant que mari et femme. Pour les familles Chrétienne, le feu vert leur est donné pour planifier le mariage religieux. La fête continue ensuite jusque tard dans la nuit, le son des benga emplissant l’air. Comme pour de nombreuses autres communautés en Afrique, les enfants étaient, et sont toujours, considérés comme une bénédiction parmi les Luo; en effet, la naissance de l’aîné est même perçue comme l’évènement scellant le mariage. Les conventions veulent que le nom de l’enfant corresponde à l’endroit et au moment de sa naissance, ou parfois même au climat du jour de la naissance. Par exemple, un enfant né au cours d’une tempête s’appellera Akoth (pour une fille) ou Okoth (pour un garçon). Parfois, les

Cela signifie que la dépouille ne peut pas être « jetée » dans un cimetière de la ville, mais plutôt transportée au village pour un enterrement convenable sur leur terres ancestrales. On pleure autant que l’on célèbre les morts. Les hommes et les femmes entonnent des chants funèbres très recherchés, débordant d’éloges pour le défunt et lui demandant pourquoi il a dû partir si tôt. Il y a encore beaucoup à apprendre des Luo, pour comprendre pleinement ce qui les caractérise, de leur amour du poisson à leur loyauté presque éternelle à la famille Odinga. the Nandis, then a sworn enemy of the Luos, decided to give one of their most beautiful girls to Luanda Magere in marriage. She would act as a spy and uncover his weak spot. After some time, she found out that his shadow was made of flesh and a single stab to the heart could kill him. She went back to her people with the revelation and the Nandis finally conquered the Luo in battle. The Luo elders, jodongo, had advised the legend against marrying from outside the tribe, but he did not listen. It cost him his life. You will therefore understand why marriage ceremonies are taken quite seriously to this day. The first of a series of ceremonies is Ayie (I accept) where the man's family goes to the woman's family home to declare interest in the woman. The two families get to know each other, then plan a second visit, this time at the man's family home. The woman's parents want to be assured that their daughter is in good hands and has a place to lay her head. The final of this series of ceremonies is nyombo, which happens at the woman's home and where the man and his family are expected to pay a dowry. Once both parties agree on the amount, the man and woman are free to live together as husband and wife. Those who subscribe to the Christian faith are given a go-ahead to plan the church wedding. The party continues through the night, with benga tunes filling the air. Like in many communities across Africa, children were and are still considered a blessing among the Luos, in fact, the birth of the first-born is perceived as a seal of the marriage. The naming convention corresponds to the place and the time of day a child was born, even the kind of weather that prevailed at the time is noted. For example, one born during a storm is called Akoth (female) or Okoth (male). Sometimes, new-borns are also named after theirgrandparents or great-grandparents, either paternal or maternal. It is said that if a deceased relative appears to the mother or father in a dream during the pregnancy, the child must be named after them. It is believed that the child would not only inherit the name, but also the character; so utmost thought is given to this. The Luo believe that upon death one should be given an honourable send-off; meaning no 'dumping' of the bodies at a cemetery in the city. Instead, they mustbe transported to the village for a proper burial in their ancestral land. The dead are mourned and celebrated in equal measure. Men and women sing elaborate dirges heaping praises on the deceased and asking them why they had to leave so soon. There is a lot more to learn about the Luo in appreciating what they are all about. Rendezvous with the Remarkable Gorillas in Remarkable Rwanda Rwanda, a small country which lies just 2 degrees south of the equator is sure to surprise you, stun you with its beauty and ultimately transform you into a poet, writer or painter. It truly lives up to its taglines of, “Remarkable Rwanda” and the, “land of a thousand hills and a million smiles”. The 7 days that we spent in Rwanda, we lost all sense of time, such was the magnetic power of the place that I truly believed what a Rwandan saying states, “God roams the world but comes to rest in Rwanda”.
The Gorilla trek at the Volcanoes National Park was the grand finale of our Rwandan odyssey and we all looked forward to this experience with bated breath.
As soon as we set our feet on the magical soil of Rwanda, we were all smitten by the angelic beauty of the land and the warm and loving hearts of the people. The experiences we had in Rwanda were all unique and touched the very core of our beings with their intensity. The experiences ranged from the devastatingly emotional experience at the Kigali Genocide Memorial to the adrenaline pumping experience of seeing wildlife up close at the Akagera National Park. One minute we were staring in awe at the panoramic views of the tea gardens stretched out in the valleys in front of us as we travelled towards Lake Kivu and at the other moment we were sweating it out in the intriguing rainforests of the country.
We arrived at the main reception center of the Volcanoes National Park after a short drive which took us through some picture post card perfect countryside where emerald green fields stretched on either side of the road and the peaks of the volcanic Virunga Mountains loomed in the background. There was a carnival like atmosphere at the reception center with a group of Rwandan drummers and dancers giving a vibrant demonstration of the rhythmic, traditional Rwandan dance that seemed to seamlessly merge with the natural surroundings and strike a harmonious symphony with nature. The performance served to further buoy our already soaring spirits and we were rearing to go to keep our rendezvous with the Gorillas.
If Rwanda is paradise, then undoubtedly the “pièce de résistance” of this paradise has to be the thrilling trek in search of Gorillas at the Volcanoes National Park.

The D-day dawned, rather we were up before it was dawn as it was necessary to reach the Volcanoes National Park early in the morning. One needs to be there before 7 AM, so that you can set off on the track of the Gorillas while they are at breakfast and before they move deeper into the jungle.
We were divided into groups based on fitness levels and the level of difficulty of corresponding trails and each group assigned a guide. Each group was to trek to meet a specifically assigned Gorilla family. As
there are 10 Gorilla families accessible to tourists, a maximum of 80 persons can have the unique experience of meeting the Gorillas on any given day. We were among the chosen ones that day and our joy knew no bounds. The experience was kicked off with our guide giving us an introduction and background of the Gorilla family that our group was going to meet. The name of the family was Ntambara and he informed us that the family consisted of 12 members and included two silverbacks or adult males with the characteristic silver hair on their backs. The guide also gave us all the do’s and don’ts to be followed on the trek. We were off, our hearts doing a jolly beat as we piled up into a jeep that took us over a dirt road that literally shook our entails and was indeed a precursor of the forthcoming events. We soon arrived at the last pit stop which was the parking place where our jeep deposited us. Our trek began from this place. We got our walking sticks, the handles of which were aptly shaped into the form of cute Gorillas and we set off in right earnest, following our guide like school kids, obediently following their teacher. We crossed a small village where the local kids came to wave us on giving us some of those million smiles for which Rwanda is renowned. We walked across fields that ran parallel to the forest and soon began our ascent which was gradual initially and became steeper as we progressed. We climbed hills, clinging on to roots of creepers and rocks, gingerly stepping over loose rocks, looking for a firm footing. Our city bred
muscles and sinews creaked and strained, our breath came in hurried bursts, the sweat flowed freely from our brows. It was tiring, but the spirits were high and we plodded on. We soon reached the top of one of the smaller hills and turned to look below, the view that stretched out below us was spectacular and marveled at the height that we had surmounted. Even as we were rejoicing at our triumph, the guide informed us that we were still only at the border of the forest and would be entering it now. We climbed a small ladder to climb a rock wall that bordered the forest and had to clamber down another similar ladder on the other side. An AK-47 armed ranger with a smile that could kill met us, he would be our escort now as we trekked deeper into the jungle. As we entered the forest, the lay of the land suddenly changed, almost impregnable walls of green vegetation

loomed in front of us. Rangers using machetes cleared narrow paths that took us deeper and deeper into the forest. Our feet wrestled with challenge after challenge, sometimes sinking into black slush, sometimes getting entangled in wild weeds and creepers. But we pushed, our excitement growing by the minute and building into a crescendo. The sight of Gorilla poop soon confirmed the presence of the Gorilla family in the vicinity. Now we walked in silence, in single file, wary of every sound and every movement in the jungle. And soon we heard them! The sounds of the Gorilla fighting or that is what we thought broke the silence of the forest with a deafening intensity. We froze in our tracks, but our guide reassuringly asked us to keep moving, which we did obediently. And then we had our first Gorilla sighting. A huge Gorilla sat motionlessly less than a few feet away framed by the green foliage. He seemed to barely notice us, as he was intent on having his breakfast,

which, thankfully was vegetarian! As I trained my camera to take some good shots of the Gorilla to freeze these unbelievable moments for posterity, another Gorilla brushed past me. We all froze, but the Gorilla went his way, not even slightly bothered by our presence. Just a few meters away within point blank range sat a huge silverback, his eyes on us. He suddenly stood on his two legs, swiveled and beat his chest, letting out a cry of supremacy, a signal to us indicating that we were in his territory and better behave. That moment will remain etched in our minds for posterity. It is not every day that you can see a silverback do that, barely a few feet from where you are standing! Our eyes then turned towards a female Gorilla, nursing a two-month old Gorilla baby. The love and protection that she showered on the baby was something that would bring tears in the eyes of the most hard hearted person on earth. We spent an hour watching silently, the antics of the Gorillas, watching a slice of their everyday life. The

experience was strangely blissful and humbling at the same time. The calm, grace and peace that these giant Gorillas displayed seemed like a lesson to Man. We also felt sad that somehow we were infringing on the privacy of the Ntambara family. The other thing that haunted us and still haunts is the look of sorrow that we saw in the eyes of the Gorillas. We bade the Gorillas farewell and headed back to civilization, our hearts smitten by the haunting eyes of the Gorillas. The Gorilla trek in the Volcanoes National Park was an experience that exceeded our expectations a manifold time. It was in many sense a very unique experience and something that we were not likely to experience again in our lifetime, unless, we returned to the paradise called Rwanda and went Gorilla trekking again. Something that all of us would love to do! The land of a thousand hills and a million smiles beckons and one wants to return there again and again!

Africa’s drive towards open skies – are we seeing progress? 2018 will mark thirty years since the concept of a single African air transport market was first discussed. It is universally accepted that opening Africa’s skies would deliver huge economic benefits for the continent and create jobs whilst driving tourism and investment. Despite being home to over 15% of the world’s population, Africa accounts for less than 3% of global air traffic, so the opportunity for growth is clear. It is predicted by IATA (International Air Transport Association) that by 2035, there will be over 300 million air passengers annually in the African region, almost trebling the numbers we see today and Rwanda will be one of the top ten fastest growing aviation markets globally. This growth could be accelerated or otherwise depending on the progress towards implementation of open skies. The question is why have the skies not already opened if there is clear economic benefit to do so? The reasons are many and complex, but some of the key issues revolve around a need to protect ailing national carriers, that may not be able to survive in a liberalised environment. There are also concerns surrounding terrorism and immigration, but the voices for change are getting louder against a background where African airlines are losing a cumulative $800 million per year, whilst all other world regions are showing profitability.
Focus on Rwanda Rwanda has been at the forefront of driving this change and is a signatory of the movement to implement open skies in Africa. The country has invested in the national carrier, with RwandAir’s fleet of new aircraft operating across a strong African network, whilst also launching intercontinentally to Mumbai and London, with many more destinations in the pipeline. Rwanda is also one of the most open countries globally. Visa on arrival is available for all Africans and many international visitors. There is also a new airport under construction at Bugesera on the outskirts of Kigali, which once completed will serve up to 4.5 million passengers a year, up from the current number of around 1 million. Rwanda occupies an enviable geographic location in the heart of Africa and this makes it the perfect location to operate as a hub airport, connecting all parts of Africa. For all the reasons above, Rwanda is the perfect host of AviaDev as they are pioneering the advancement of connectivity to, from and within Africa.

RwandAir to spread its wings to three new West African destinations R
wandAir, the national carrier of the republic of Rwanda will commence three weekly operations to Conakry (Guinea), Bamako (Mali) and Dakar (Senegal) from its new hub in Cotonou (Benin), effective 30th September 2017. This is in addition to the three destinations, Libreville (Gabon), Brazzaville (Congo), and Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire) that are already served from Cotonou effective 31st August. The new Cotonou hub will be synchronized with the existing operations from Kigali allowing seamless connections to the rest of the RwandAir destinations, which are growing fast on the African continent and beyond.
Dakar, Bamako, and Conakry are some of the largest cities in West Africa, and are home to a vast multicultural heritage and rich history with museums and ancient mosques dating back from the time of the great African empires. Some of the attractions include the house of slaves on the island of Gorée in Dakar, the National Museum of Mali, and the Conakry Grand Mosque, which is the largest in SubSaharan Africa.
“These latest additions are further proof of our commitment to improve connections on the African continent, and the will to create new opportunities for economic exchange, trade and tourism between countries with the aim of fostering economic development,” said Chance Ndagano, the acting Chief Executive Officer of RwandAir. The launch of these new destinations comes after the successful entry into the European market with flights to London and Brussels in May and July respectively. The new routes will extend RwandAir’s network to twenty-six (26) destinations.

Although the menu is relatively expensive by South African standards, prices are extremely affordable by international standards. The Leopard’s decor, with mismatched tableware and antique prints on the walls, feels like a modernized version of your grandmother’s dining room.

Arch Hotel, The rooms were incredibly clean, the staff was courteous and helpful, and the hotel was surrounded by nice restaurants and cool shops. I felt very safe on the grounds. The hotel’s decor is very unique and modern. The rooms were very spacious and the bed was incredibly comfortable. After a long 21 hour travel day it was exactly what we needed.

The staff, Management down are all very, very helpful, great service and excellent food. The rooms are very clean, with AC and en-suite, the little touches make all the difference. The pool is clean with ample seating and loungers, very quiet and private! Overall Acacia is the pearl of Juba, when work and compound life gets to much, take a break here and the batteries are recharged!

Traditional Cattle Market, The White Bull is prized and sacrificed for celebration as a symbol of peace after struggle. The cattle market near the city center has herds of cows that cross town going to the market. The bulls have horns up to six feet long and are a sight to watch. The White Bull is a popular beer in Sudan and Red Bull is the most popular imported energy drink – I’m sure you’ve heard of it!

Le White Bull est une bière populaire au Soudan et Red Bull est la boisson énergétique importée la plus populaire - je suis sûr que vous en avez entendu parler!

STEAKHOUSE TIP, This was quite an interesting restaurant with touches of the Austrian Alps mixed with local African. It was a quiet, peaceful place to have some nourishment. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here, the waitresses were friendly and welcoming and the meal was tasty. We went for lunch and though it’s not a huge menu it was very good, African dishes are big at lunch. If you’re hankering for a steak then you can have one here very cheaply as dishes

DUBAI EAT : Ewaan is surely one of the most picturesque restaurants in Dubai. Apart from its pleasant oriental décor, it offers great views of Burj Khalifa from its outside terrace. This restaurant is located in The Palace Downtown hotel which is an upscale 5-star property. The buffet is one of the best in Dubai so far. Ewaan’s roast station with lamb and beef roast marinated and cooked to perfection. The rest of their food is predominantly Arabic, Asian and Continental, which is a good mix. Try the highly recommended seafood platter for two and garlic octopus.
Eat: For an unforgettable meal of fresh fish and seafood visit Tamarind Nairobi located in the National Bank Building. Although expensive, the service is excellent and a lot of care and attention is put into the details. The seafood is flown in daily from the coast and a wide selection of meat dishes is available as well.
Sleep: The ship-themed Voyager Beach Resort north of Mombasa is a beautiful beach getaway. The allinclusive resort is ideal for families, has three swimming pools (one that is adults-only), and a range of water sports. Explore: Visit Fort Jesus at the entrance to the harbour for a glimpse into history. Built by the Portuguese in 1593 and now a national museum, Fort Jesus is open daily from 8:00am – 6:00pm. Tell us about yourself and your family My name is Reuben Mbonye, I was born 29 years ago in Kenya. I studied in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, in that order. In 2012, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree second honors from Makerere University, Kampala. Immediately after takeoff the aircraft climbs very steeply. Shortly afterwards you will hear a reduction in the engine sound, but the aircraft will continue to climb. All aircraft cabins are pressurized. Due to change in pressure during takeoff and landing, some passengers may experience slight discomfort in the ear. Relieve this by swallowing, yawning or pinching the nostrils gently and breathing out whilst keeping lips sealed. Should you feel unwell at any time, please ask the cabin crew for assistance.

I was five years old when I took the plane for the first time. I was travelling alone with my 6 year-old sister. The trip was from Kinshasa to Nairobi where we were going to see our dad for holidays.
My first flight was to Ethiopia. The take-off wasn't so bad, I remember loving the feeling in my stomach; it was like some little bubbles were tickling me. But come to landing, when I saw we were flying above water, it felt like I was having a panic attack, like I wasn't getting enough air to breathe, the more we descended the more I felt like I would faint. Wah! What a relief it was when we finally landed!!
Throughout the planning, I actually thought that my dad would pick us from the airport in Kinshasa and we would fly together to Nairobi; it hadn't dawned on me that in fact we would travel alone because dad was on the other side of the continent. Drama started when my mum walked me to the runway but didn't go up the stairs... I cried the entire time thinking that I had been abandoned especially because I didn't trust my sister to protect me. Luckily, my mum had told one of the flight attendants to take care of me. So throughout the flight, she played with me, took me to the cockpit and let me hang out with her at the back. Needless to say that by the end of the trip I had fallen in love and was so sure that I would marry her. I was introduced to inflight chewing gum then. During all take-offs to date, I keep my eyes closed and always have chewing gum. J’avais cinq ans lorsque j’ai pris l’avion pour la première fois. Je voyageais seul avec ma soeur de 6 ans. Nous voyagions entre Kinshasa et Nairobi où nous allions voir notre père pour les vacances. Lorsque nous avions planifié le voyage, je pensais qu’en fait notre père viendrait nous chercher à l’aéroport à Kinshasa et que nous prendrions l’avion ensemble jusqu’à Nairobi ; je n’avais pas réalisé que nous voyagerions seuls car mon père était de l’autre côté du continent. Le drame a commencé lorsque ma mère m’a accompagné jusque sur la piste mais n’a pas monté les escaliers… J’ai pleuré tout le temps du trajet car je pensais que j’avais été abandonné, et aussi parce que je pensais que ma soeur n’était pas capable de me protéger. Heureusement, ma mère avait demandé à une des hôtesses de l’air de s’occuper de moi. Tout le long du trajet elle a donc joué avec moi, m’a emmené dans le cockpit et m’a laissé passer du temps avec elle à l’arrière de l’avion. Il va sans dire qu’avant la fin du voyage j’étais tombé amoureux et j’étais convaincu que j’allais l’épouser.

J’ai également découvert les joies de mâcher du chewing-gum pendant le vol. Depuis, à chaque décollage, je garde les yeux fermés et j’ai toujours du chewing-gum avec moi.
Mon premier vol était à destination de l’Éthiopie. Le décollage n’était pas si terrible que cela, je me souviens avoir adoré la sensation dans mon estomac, qui s’apparentait à de petites bulles qui me chatouillaient. Mais lorsque le moment de l’atterrissage est arrivé, lorsque j’ai vu que nous volions au dessus de l’eau, j’ai eu l’impression de faire une crise de panique, comme si je n’avais pas assez d’air pour respirer, plus on descendait, plus je pensais m’évanouir. Ouf ! Quand nous avons finallement atteri !!
Nancy I was on my way to Entebbe from Kigali for a work event. One of my bosses jokingly asked me to open the window. I struggled until I realized airplane windows are not like car windows. Not one of my proudest moments…

Hope My first experience was a flight from Kigali to Dar-es-Salaam. Take off was okay because I was with my fiancé so he oriented me. I remember wondering if the loo flushes or not. Just before we landed, I started sweating and feeling nauseous. My fiancé leaned over to talk to me and I could not hear a word since my ears were blocked. He told me to yawn or chew gum. I couldn't even open my purse; I was shaking like a leaf. He gave me his hand to hold on to till we were safely on the ground. He still complains of how hard I squeezed it!
Ma première expérience fut un vol de Kigali à Dar Es Salaam. Le décollage s’est bien passé car j’étais avec mon fiancé qui a pu me guider. Je me souviens m’être demandée si on pouvait tirer la chasse d’eau dans les toilettes de l’avion. Juste avant l’atterrissage j’ai commencé à transpirer et à avoir la nausée. Mon fiancé s’est penché vers moi pour me parler mais je n’entendais rien du tout car mes oreilles étaient bouchées. Il m’a conseillé de continuer à bailler ou à mâcher du chewinggum. Je n’arrivais même pas à ouvrir mon sac à main, je tremblais comme une feuille. Il m’a donné la main pour que je puisse m’y accrocher jusqu’à ce que nous nous posions en toute sécurité. Il se plaint encore du fait que je l’ai serrée trop fort !

La première fois que j’ai voyagé en avion, je voyageais de Nairobi à Johannesburg en passant par le Malawi. Tout s’est bien passé sauf que je pensais que les repas et les boissons étaient payantes. Mon ventre a tellement gargouillé tout le long du trajet lorsque je regardais les autres passagers apprécier leur nourriture et leur vin ! Désormais je flirte avec les hôtesses de l’air pour avoir des doubles doses…
Brian My first flight was from Mombasa to Kisumu via Nairobi. The first embarrassing moment came when I was trying to fasten my seatbelt; luckily the lady next to me saw how much I was struggling and did it for me. Then the stewardess came around serving fish sandwiches and since the lady sitting next to me refused I also declined the snack trying to act cool. When I boarded the second flight to Kisumu I asked for a sandwich only to be told there were none, just peanuts. Hunger stricken, I instantly regretted not eating that sandwich.
Mon premier vol a eu lieu entre Mombassa et Kisumu via Nairobi. Le premier moment gênant s’est produit lorsque j’ai essayé d’attacher ma ceinture ; heureusement la femme assise à côté de moi a vu à quel point j’avais du mal à l’attacher et l’a fait à ma place. Ensuite l’hôtesse est arrivée pour nous servir des sandwichs au poisson, et comme ma voisine a refusé, j’ai également refusé cet en-cas pour avoir l’air cool. Lorsque j’ai embarqué pour mon deuxième vol vers Kisumu, j’ai demandé un sandwich, et on m’a répondu qu’il n’y en avait pas, il y aurait seulement des cacahuètes. Frappé par la faim, j’ai instantanément regretté de ne pas avoir mangé ce sandwich.
Maike First, I couldn't fasten my seat belt, so I took a magazine and covered it. I didn't want the embarrassment that came with the flight attendant helping me like a child. Then, I had a strong urge to use the toilet but I didn't trust that I could undertake such an operation in the air.So I suffered in silence.
Now, traveling by air can be pretty daunting even for seasoned travelers. Eve Dondo, who has been an air hostess for a several years gives some tips that will help you eliminate or lessen your anxiety, in order to enjoy your flight: Do some research; look up travel tips and find out what to expect fromprevious or frequent fliers to avoid any surprises. Familiarize yourself with the environment once you get on board. Look for your nearest exit, read the leaflet on what to do incase of an emergency. It will make you feel more secure. Speak to the cabin crew; ask all the questions you need to, no matter how silly they might seem. The crew isthere to help you and make your flight comfortable. Always make sure you snack or eat something, especially during long flights. This will help reduce nausea or air sickness in case of turbulence. Pack everything you need a few days before the flight. Carry the most essential stuff in your carry-on bag and the rest in the check-in luggage. This will make your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable. Get to know your neighbor; great networks and friendships can begin in the air. Look outside; the view from up high is beautiful! Take lots of selfies to remember the experience.
D’abord, je n’arrivais pas à attacher ma ceinture, alors j’ai pris un magazine pour la couvrir. Je ne voulais pas subir la honte de voir l’hôtesse m’aider comme un enfant. Ensuite, j’ai eu très envie d’utiliser les toilettes mais je n’ai pas osé effectuer une telle opération en plein vol. J'ai donc souffert en silence. Les voyages en avion peuvent être plutôt intimidants même pour les voyageurs expérimentés. Eve Dondo, qui est hôtesse de l’air depuis plusieurs années nous donne quelques astuces pour éliminer ou réduire le stress pour pouvoir profiter pleinement du vol : Faites des recherches; cherchez des astuces pour votre voyage et découvrez à quoi vous attendre grâce aux voyageurs qui se sont rendus à cette destination avant vous ou aux voyageurs réguliers pour éviter les surprises. Familiarisez vous avec l’environnement lorsque vous arrivez à bord. Cherchez la sortie la plus proche, lisez le dépliant explicatif de la conduite à tenir en cas d’urgence. Vous vous sentirez plus en sécurité. Parlez au personnel de cabine ; posez autant de questions que vous le souhaitez, même si elles peuvent paraître idiotes. L’équipage est là pour vous aider et faire en sorte que votre vol soit le plus confortable possible. Assurez-vous de grignoter ou de manger quelque chose, en particulier lors des vols longs. Cela vous aidera à réduire la nausée ou le mal de l’air en cas de turbulences. Faites vos valises quelques jours avant votre vol pour vous assurez d’avoir tout ce dont vous avez besoin. Emportez l’essentiel dans votre bagage à main, et le reste dans votre bagage en soute. Cela rendra votre voyage plus facile et plus agréable. Apprenez à connaître votre voisin ; de bons réseaux et de belles amitiés peuvent se créer dans les airs.

Once, there was a huge tree with a broad trunk and innumerable branches right in the middle of a dry land. The tree gave rest and shelter to hundreds and thousands of travelers. Being located near four towns, and many villages, the tree was an ideal meeting point for travelers.
this is just a useless tree and it has nothing to feed us, not even a fruit or even nuts! It is of no use!”
One day, two travelers reached the tree after a long time of walking. Their destination was one of the towns nearby. It was a hot and sunny day, and the travelers were very happy to take a rest under the tree. Exhausted, they slumped under the tree. They slept for a while, enjoying the cool shade and the soft breeze.
The tree, which could not tolerate the cursing words of the traveler, said in a sad yet strong voice, “You can’t be so ungrateful to me. Just think of your condition when you reached here in the hot and dry sun! I offered you a cool and comfortable place to rest and sleep with a soothing breeze. If I was not here, you would have died now! I saved your life from the hot sun, but you humiliate me!”
After a while, one of the travelers got hungry. They had no food with them. The hungry traveler looked up at the tree, to see if there was any fruit. Finding none, he began to curse the tree. “Oh,
The other traveler comforted him and asked him to stay cool. However, the hungry man continuing cursing the tree.
The traveler realized his mistake and apologized to the tree. Be grateful for your blessings.
