Lockodnosw..n. less

The things we learnt, discovered and loved during lockdown by the i-on team

Sam Hinks, designer “I take delight in selling expensive second-hand items” Mostly music related. It’s such an adrenaline rush and a therapy for a condition known as ‘gear acquisition syndrome’ or GAK for short.

“I discovered community radio presenting”

Jo Morris, i-on co-founder “Family movie nights are the way forward” Disney + got an absolutely hammering. We’d snuggle up with popcorn and relish the feeling of shutting out the world. It was pretty magical.

“Gaming gets a bad rap”

I’m on the radio and I love it. Formed over Yes, I’m on the radio and I love it. Formed over lockdown, Chief Radio was started by Kirsty Baird of Sing in the City fame to give more exposure and airtime to unsigned artists from Scotland and beyond.

Lockdown would’ve been hell without it but our house was filled with shouting and laughter as my son and his friends killed baddies and fought dragons on-line.

“I get excited about travelling to the office” Yes, It is probably a positive mental health experience, as the walk from Waverley Station to Stockbridge is now a very exciting one. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

“I am way more resourceful than I realised” I gave my front garden a full makeover. I learned how to level and tile a path, how to build a raised bed and how to source gravel when the local store was closed. I miss my daily DIY adventures but my knees are glad I’m back at my desk.

Carrie Mitchell, features editor “Life is too short for making croissants from scratch” When the baking urge strikes again, I’ll be sticking to banana bread like everyone else.

“Meditation actually works” I succumbed to pressure from a wellmeaning WhatsApp group to complete a 21 Day programme by Deepak Chopra, and I loved it. It got me through some dark days and I still make time to meditate now.

“Joelato Gelato is the BEST ice cream I’ve ever tasted” Made in Perth and delivered across Edinburgh, they have new flavours every month; I’m dying to try the pear, ricotta and chocolate.

6

Nicky Murdoch, editor “I’m actually pretty good at DIY” I’m green fingered too. From refurbishing my windows to transforming the garden and fixing wonky fixtures, you name it, I can now do it.

“I’ve learnt how to be more present” I’m normally spinning too many plates so it was good to just stop. I became focused on what really matters in life – family, friendship and kindness.

“I love homemade banana bread with chocolate chips way too much” And my handbag, shoe and blazer collection is out of control. Don’t even get me started on make-up…

FEATURES

Graham Turner, digital manager “I am brilliant at sleeping” Turns out if you really commit yourself, you CAN sleep for 20 hours.

“You’re never too old to learn something new” People have been telling me they’ve tackled online courses, learned new languages and re-created that breakfast machine from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I made my own hollandaise sauce for eggs benedict. I’m just really modest.

“I’m one of the lucky ones” It’s hard to imagine the situation I would be in if it wasn’t for furlough. More importantly, my family have come out unscathed health-wise. Many others haven’t been so lucky.

Laura Wood, i-on co-founder “Humanity and kindness get me every time” Rainbow art, Capt Tom walking for NHS, solidarity for George Floyd, my children clapping for the NHS, the warmth of friends and neighbours…there’s nothing like a lockdown to touch the soul.

“Camping is still probably not my thing” But then, my wild camping experience involved a family-size tent and three children. Next time, it’ll be me, my other half, and a tent for two.

“Seafood makes me happy” And nothing beats fresh from the boat. We ate bbq’d sardines and fresh crab claws in Cornwall, and waited patiently in the early hours in Port Seton Harbour for the arrival of our prawns from Fairnies Fresh Prawns, our Facebook find.

Amy Falconer, account director “I properly discovered my inner chef” I’ve loved learning new skills on a professional cookery course and have been posting the dishes I create on my Instagram page @amsinthekitchen.

“Porty beach isn’t always a nice place to be” I feel lucky to live by the sea but, on sunny days, I was thankful for all the lovely local parks and walks I discovered. Figgate park is a favourite; peaceful, pretty, and the perfect place to be, away from the busy beach.

“The natural look is completely acceptable, sometimes” I wouldn’t leave the house without a full face of makeup before lockdown. I still love to get dolled up, but I’ve relaxed my morning routine and learned to embrace my natural self.

Mountain Eye on the

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my 2005. My best pal, Laura, and I made the monumental decision to leave Marbella, Spain, where we had spent the last eight years working on lifestyle magazines, to start up our own wee one in Edinburgh. Yes, we left the place of sunshine and luxury yachts to move ‘home’ (for Laura at least) to Edinburgh, the place of not-sunshine as I discovered very quickly. Leaving Spain on that warm February morning was a hard thing to do, but it was the start of a new adventurecreating i-on from a two-bed flat on St Stephen Street, just Laura and me. We pounded the streets, meeting and chatting to business owners about our plans for a new magazine, back in the days when freemiums weren’t a thing and the world was still run by newspapers. The reception was warm. People were lovely and, based on a sexy little mock-up of what was to come, we brought on amazing distribution spots, met great freelancers and photographers, and signed up advertisers before the magazine was even published.

- October’05

27 February 2005 The snow is horizontal. I’m freezing my ass off here. It’s light for six hours a day and then I’m plunged into the endless winter. My umbrella broke on my first day here.

2020, we didn’t see you coming. All we knew was it would be a big year for us, i-on’s 15th anniversary. We didn’t quite realise how big a year it would be. In celebration of our relaunch after lockdown we look back at the past 15 years and what they’ve meant to us.

15 September 2005 The Spanish guitarist is playing gently to a room of about 50 people sipping Prosecco at our launch party, looking at the brand new i-on Edinburgh magazine. We’re in Santini, once part of the Sheraton hotel and have gathered together a formidable bunch of Edinburgh’s finest from Harvey Nichols to Cheynes, all new friends of i-on who showed their support for us over the last six months. The response is positive. The next morning as the magazine is distributed around town, our inbox beeps constantly with messages from well-wishers and new readers, entering to win the first of many i-on competitions, a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. It’s real – we’ve officially launched. 15 September 2006 We’ve doubled the amount of magazines we distribute in Edinburgh because everywhere was running out. People have stopped calling it Ian magazine (with a question mark) and say ‘oh, I love i-on’ whenever we mention what we do. We are One. 15 September 2015 The aerial acrobats swing across the ceiling at Mansfield Traquair, 350 people buzz around and are here with us to celebrate a decade of i-on. Not to toot our own trumpets too much but it is one helluva party. We feel so proud of what we’ve achieved and of the i-on team. Both Laura and I are now mums and the juggling plus the guilt of every working mum is real.

2016 We double the amount of magazines we distribute in Edinburgh because everywhere is running out. People have stopped calling it Ian magazine (with a question mark) and say ‘oh, I love i-on’ whenever we mention what we do. We are one. 2020 I think I speak for every business owner when I say… WTAF@**. Nobody saw this coming. Well, maybe Bill Gates. 15 years is an amazing achievement though and our lovely magazine is still here. We’re still banging the drum for local, we still love Edinburgh. What the future holds is a little less certain for everyone right now, but we have faith that we’ll be blowing out 20 candles in 2025. Thanks to everyone who’s supported us over the years. Without you, we’d be back in Marbella drinking sangria….

Since 2005, we’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of businesses, both big and small. We catch up with a few business owners from back in the day to see what’s changed for them over the years and what, if any, lessons they’ve learned...

CALUM MACKINNON...

Learnt life lessons from style bar Amicus Apple and is now co-owner of Mac & Wild. “Opening Amicus was the greatest learning years of my career. I was only 23 then and, whilst my life has changed in so many ways (I’m more of a country pub man these days), I am still involved in the ever-challenging but brilliant world of hospitality. “Having sold Amicus Apple, I moved to London where I co-founded the Scottish Meat Restaurant and Adventure brand, Mac & Wild. The greatest lesson learnt over the 15 years is the importance of brand integrity. As consumers continue to demand better - both in terms of quality and transparency, I firmly believe that integrity is the ticket to building a brand with longevity and growth potential. We miss Edinburgh a lot and we’re honoured and excited that Mac & Wild will be included in the Bonnie & Wild food and drink Marketplace opening in 2021 within the St James Centre redevelopment. Can’t wait to see some old faces again!”

JENNY LOCKTON…

Closed the bricks and mortar stores for Bohemia Design and turned the website into a worldwide success. “One moment, my life 15 years ago feels light years away and the next it seems like yesterday. My selfemployed story began in the ‘80s with a picture framing business called the Blackadder Gallery on Inverleith Row. After many years in retail and shops in Broughton Street, Dundas Street, Morningside and Marchmont, my current business, Bohemia, moved entirely online. “My work with artisans in Morocco has become the main focus and we now retail and wholesale beautiful handmade wares to customers across the globe. It is certainly challenging work but the rewards are huge in terms of personal growth and human understanding. I still make mistakes in business but the older I get the more excited I become to pack as much into my life as I can and allow my instinct to be my wisest guide.”

13

CLARE MacGOEY...

Started afresh, turning her back on running luxury lingerie boutique Boudiche and moving abroad. “In 2005, I started Boudiche with my friend and business partner, Fiona. Aside from giving birth to my three kids and marrying my husband, it was one of the best experiences of my life. Mostly, it introduced me to the concept of humans helping humans, with nothing in it for them – just because they can, and to the world of mentoring. We were incredibly lucky to have people like Colin Temple (Schuh’s CEO) and Evelyn MacDonald of then PSYBT, now Scottish Edge, playing key roles in mentoring and support when we needed it. I have tried to pay forward that gift in the last 15 years and have gone on to mentor and coach other female entrepreneurs. “I moved to New York where I met my husband, Rob, and where we lived for the last 10 years. Now we’re just outside Boston and juggling three young kids through the pandemic. I’m currently having a mid-life crisis/spiritual awakening and redesigning my life to do something I love with the next chapter. My biggest lesson would be to live the life you dream of living, not the one you that just happens.”

JENNIFER CHEYNE…

Continues her love of hairdressing at her award-winning Edinburgh salons Cheynes Hairdressing. “Business is always challenging and you have to be pro-active and always looking ahead. But, I embrace change. Whilst I love hairdressing and making people feel good, last year I announced my retirement. Due to current circumstances this has been delayed; my priority is helping the company through difficult times and I’m delighted the team is now very prepared and excited to move forward. Over the years I’ve learnt that there are two types of people; ‘drains and radiators’. I surround myself with radiators; people who radiate fun and laughter, and have a positive outlook. Edinburgh, before the pandemic, was a buzzing cosmopolitan city with lots going on. I’m sure that the city will get its mojo back soon.”

14

ELENA TORRES…

Still enjoys the high life as company director of ExecAir luxury aircraft charter.

SARRA BEJAOUI…

Continues empowering people to reach their own success as company director of SmartPA. “My business journey started in 2008 as a one-woman lifestyle management service and has grown to a leading PA and business support service provider. We now have a tribe of over 250 SmartPAs and our constantly evolving Edinburgh HQ team is being led by five female heads of department. “The golden lesson I’ve learned since the inception of SmartPA, one that has been reinforced this year, is that people are the heart of any organisation. I personally have been astounded and inspired by the resilience and adaptability shown by businesses across the world and by my own team. No matter the changes, everyone has found a way to rise to the occasion, whether by changing their offering or lending support wherever it’s needed. Remote and virtual working is the new norm and businesses everywhere are searching for cost-saving methods that don’t affect quality.”

“2020 has been a reflective year for many. For me, it has brought a house move out of the city to a quieter life in East Lothian. It’s also the 15-year anniversary of my business. “In the early days of setting up I’d often get asked questions like ‘why have you started a business?’ ‘Do you have a five-year plan?’ ‘What’s your exit strategy?’ I didn’t know the answers. I felt under qualified, young and inexperienced. But, I soon realised being yourself in business will attract the right people; colleagues, mentors, collaborators and clients. I no longer work with people who don’t match my values. I put myself at the centre; my service-driven values, my passion for the journey experience, my enthusiasm and interest of people, these are the things that excite and energise me. “I’m now married with two children and family life has changed everything for the better. I truly appreciate the entrepreneurial path; ExecAir gave me freedom to balance work/family life and work from home. It wasn’t easy but it worked.”

FRIGHT NIGHT

2

Edinburgh’s famous for having some of the best ghost tours in the world, delivered with passion and as entertaining as they are spooky. Here are our favourites, all socially distanced of course.

16

FREAKY THEATRES Edinburgh’s home to not one, but two of the most haunted theatres in the world. Great, eh?

THE REAL MARY KING’S CLOSE

Not actually a close but a warren of narrow underground streets, Mary King’s Close was once open, busy and bustling, but was closed in the 18th century when the buildings were cropped and used to form the foundations of the City Chambers. The underground close reopened to the public in 2003 and is now the site of a hugely popular tourist attraction, The Real Mary King’s Close. The guided tours through one of Edinburgh’s most haunted spots covers 400 years of history and is well worth checking out. www.realmarykingsclose.com.

CITY OF THE DEAD TOURS

Take in a litany of ghost walks that include legendary, spooky locales such as Greyfriars Kirkyard and the underground vaults. City of the Dead are masters of the tightrope between fun and educational (which everyone knows is the best kind of fun). The tour guides are a mix of historians and professional entertainers, offering more than a simple walk around the city spouting historical facts. www.cityofthedeadtours.com.

MERCAT TOURS

With guided walks such as Doomed, Dead & Buried, Ghostly Edinburgh and Ghostly underground, award-winning storytellers Mercat know their way around Edinburgh’s most haunted spots better than most. If you’re looking for a real scare, go for the amazing adults-only Hidden & Haunted guided tour. www.mercattours.com.

THE GHOST BUS TOURS

PLAYHOUSE

The amazingly named ‘Necrobus’ has been providing the UK’s only horrorcomedy show on wheels for over a decade now. Classically trained actors provide a theatre experience as you take in tales of royal executions and devious spirits in a restored 1960s Routemaster bus with all manner of spooky fittings. www.theghostbustours.com.

Haunted by the (friendly) spirit of Albert, an old maintenance man who died in the building. Wall-gliding, jangly keys, door slamming and cheeky pokes have all been regularly reported.

THE CADIES AND WITCHERY TOURS

FESTIVAL THEATRE

Leaving from the Witchery on Castlehill of an evening (Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7pm) Alexander Clapperton, deceased, takes guests on a Murder and Mystery tour of the Old Town, into nooks and crannies perhaps never seen before and regales entertaining tales with a few frights along the way. www.witcherytours.com.

Ravaged by a fire in 1911 when 11 performers died, including the greatest illusionist of his time, The Great Lafayette. Many believe this was far from his last performance, however, with reports of random, sourceless shiny lights in the theatre coming from his lavish diamond rings. Ooooooooo (read that bit in a ghost voice, please).

18

O

nce upon a time, not so very long ago, the best non-alcFclean liqoholic drink on the market was a virgin Bloody Mary (aka tomato juice with a dash of Worcester and tabasco, garnished with a stick of celery if you were lucky). Little did we know then that alcohol-free drinks and spirits were about to become big business. Craft beers and gin, step aside. In a world where it’s now socially acceptable not to be a consumer of alcohol, and the growing sober-curious movement, sales of alcohol-free spirits hit £37million last year, up a whopping 506 per cent since 2014. And while brands such as Seedlip, the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit, and Made in Chelsea star Mathew Spencer’s The Clean Co. have quickly gained ground, much of the growth in the market has come from smaller, artisan distillers who use traditional techniques and sustainable methods. Bax Botanics was launched in January 2019 by husband and wife team, Chris and Rose Bax, after 20 years of teaching about wild foods and flavours in their Yorkshire woodland. They distil their drinks in traditional beaten copper stills using ethically sourced

and sustainable herbs and botanicals, and their Sea Buckthorn product is the only alcohol-free spirit to win a Great Taste award. “Craft alcohol-free spirits are the latest home-grown success story, and artisanal producers like Rose and I are seeing soaring demand for our products,” says Chris. “Like with craft beers, consumers have more sophisticated palates than some people realise, and we expect to see strong support for smaller producers despite big drinks brands trying to muscle into the market.” Closer to home the Old Curiosity craft distillery has launched The Herb Garden Small Batch NonAlcoholic Spirit (£19.95, 50cl, 0% ABV). Distilled with juniper, coriander, cardamom, lemon balm, yarrow and calendula, which are grown and hand-picked at the distillery’s Secret Herb Garden on the outskirts of Edinburgh, it perfectly captures the genuine flavour of a real gin. Now excuse me whilst I pour myself a G&T. Not shaken, not stirred and definitely not stiff, these days my G&Ts are positively saintly. www.theoldcuriosity.co.uk, www.baxbotanics.com.

or proper autumnal feels get the family involved in a spot of foraging. Now’s the time to get picking rosehips and you’ll find them growing in abundance, on the sunny side of hedgerows, in parks, by rivers or old railway paths. Once used to make itching powder, nowadays rosehips are a super versatile, natural food ingredient with a sweet and exotic taste. In syrup form it’s used like maple syrup but it also makes great tasting jams, jellies, wine and vinegar. Even better, rosehips contain 20 - 50 times more Vitamin C than oranges and that’s why the creative team at the Buck and Birch, an innovative drinks company which uses foraged ingredients, is encouraging everyone to hunt out rosehips and crab apples. For every kilo delivered to their distillery, adults will receive a £5 gift voucher to spend in the shop and there’s rosehip syrup for the kids. The syrup, distilled down from the rosehips, will also be donated to care homes across the region, ensuring that the most vulnerable are looked after during the colder months. For more information about how to get involved, visit www.buckandbirch.com.

THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST TIME TO SWIM. GONE ARE THE PESKY JELLYFISH WHICH MAKE SUMMER SWIMMING A BIT DAUNTING AND WITH LESS PEOPLE ON THE BEACH, YOU ARE LESS LIKELY TO ACCIDENTALLY FLASH SOMEONE AS YOU CHANGE”

T

here is nothing quite like the feeling of swimming into the sunrise on a deserted beach, then warming up with a coffee and heading off to work. Fortunately, here in Edinburgh we are blessed with an amazing, accessible coastline and more and more of us are discovering the joys and healing properties of a regular dip in the cold water, so it seems very apt that 2020 is the year of Scotland’s Coasts & Waters. Post lockdown we have seen a sharp spike in members joining local swim groups across the whole of the UK, leading the Outdoor Swimming Society to shut down its online map of swim spots for fear of them becoming overwhelmed with new swimmers. Now, if you visit Portobello or Wardie beach you will almost certainly see someone swimming, pretty much at any time of day, and in all weathers. Certainly, on a beautiful, calm sunny day, one can see the appeal, but what about now the autumn is creeping closer, we are popping the heating on, perhaps an extra layer, digging out the winter coats and boots? Well, for me at least, this is the absolute BEST time to swim. Gone are the pesky jellyfish which make summer swimming a bit daunting and, with less people on the beach, you are less likely to accidentally flash someone as you change. In come the later sunrises, earlier sunsets and stunning autumn light, and the water is not yet too cold, really only a little colder than the summer temperatures so it is a great time to start. Cold water swimming has been the subject of several medical studies over the last few years, including its effect on depression and pain relief. People have reported feeling a reduction in chronic pain, a boost in mood, relief from migraines, less anxiety, and a sense

of belonging. When writing our book Taking The Plunge, fellow swimmer Vicky Allen and I met and swam with many swimmers who have felt this healing for themselves. Dawn is one example. After a serious back injury left her in chronic pain, compounded by a genetic condition she also suffered from called Elhers Danlos syndrome, Dawn was registered disabled and often used a wheelchair to get around. Feeling severely depressed and isolated, she attempted to take her own life and was later pointed towards outdoor swimming by a charity. When she tried it out, she immediately felt the benefit of pain relief and a wonderful feeling of happiness in nature. Soon, she started to make friends with other swimmers and felt the symptoms of depression begin to lift while her chronic pain also reduced. “You get the buzz from the water, and then the buzz from the people around you is just incredible,” says Dawn. “As soon as I feel sore now, I think, Right, I need to get in the water. But the best part is I also do it with my swimming family.” For Dawn, as for many people, it’s not just about the act of swimming. “It’s about,” she says, “being with other people, being outside, being so close to nature, just getting out of your house. If you’re in the water for two minutes you will feel proud of yourself. Isolation and loneliness have a big impact on depression, and the social aspect of wild swimming really helps.” Just last month Dawn swam the channel with a group raising money for a back injury charity, she is mostly free from pain, surrounded by great friends and never stops smiling. It really is testament to how outdoor swimming can change lives.

Fancy a go? Top tips for autumn swims Come as you are So many people ask what kit they need to get started and I would suggest you don’t need anything more than a swimsuit/ trunks and a towel. You can always add more kit later if you want, perhaps neoprene gloves or boots, maybe a bobble hat! Buddy up Find someone to swim with, ideally someone who is used to outdoor swimming and can help you get started. There are lots of online groups for this. Be safe Make sure you know where you are swimming. Outdoor swimming carries risks including riptides, hypothermia, currents, hidden objects underwater etc. Ensure you have a safe entry and exit point and have someone with you. Keep it short Allow your body to adjust to the water then always get out before you think you should. Listen carefully to your own body as you may not be able to tolerate as much as the next person. Get warm fast Your body can continue to lose heat for around 30 minutes after a cold swim, this is known as after drop, and can be dangerous. Bring a hot drink to warm up from the inside out and get your wet things off quickly and put on as many layers as you can. Loose baggy clothes are always easiest when fingers are cold and numb. Taking The Plunge by Anna Deacon & Vicky Allan is out now.

Best local swimming spots

1

Portobello beach A bit of an obvious one but it is a great starting point. It is pretty safe if you swim alongside the shore as it doesn’t really get affected by rip tides, and there is usually always someone swimming.

2

Wardie Bay 2020 has seen an explosion of swimmers at Wardie. With resident seals and visits from dolphins this oft-overlooked little beach is actually perfect for nature loving swimmers and it is pretty protected by the breakwater.

3

Gullane This wide sweeping beach in East Lothian is perfect for a quiet autumn swim. The water is so clear and there is always plenty of space to find your own spot. Perfect place for a sunset swim followed by a little beach fire. Be careful of the currents though.

4

Gladhouse A reservoir, near Penicuik with a little island in the middle which is a good challenge to swim to for more experienced swimmers.

5

Tyninghame So hard to choose from all the amazing East Lothian beaches, but this is a close second for me. Surrounded by forest, this enormous, golden sandy beach is a stunning place for a swim.

elebrate the spirit of ’60s rebellion at the V&A Dundee’s first major fashion exhibition which focuses on legendary British designer Mary Quant. A disruptor of the fashion industry, Quant encouraged a new wave of feminism through fashion, inspiring young women to rebel against the traditional clothing worn by their mothers and grandmothers. Her shop, Bazaar, opened in 1955, and her colourful, affordable designs were a reaction against the austerity and drabness of post-war London. Famous for popularising the miniskirt, Quant’s designs offered new versions of femininity and challenged gender stereotypes. Key objects featured within the exhibition include the pioneering ‘Wet Collection’ PVC rainwear and a jute miniskirt. It will also feature the stories of women who made outfits from Mary Quant’s dressmaking patterns, gathered through V&A Dundee’s #SewQuant campaign. Mary Quant runs until 17 January 2021. LOVE LEATHER

The trend for leather is going nowhere fast. Whether it’s faux or the real deal, wear it top to toe to turn heads or try a bold, bright coloured trench to vamp up an outfit. We’re really into this Nanushka Naum vegan leather shirt, £305 at Jane Davidson. www.janedavidson.co.uk.

FIVE MINUTES WITH…

KEIRA WRAAE-STEWART We grabbed a quick chat with the founder of new Edinburgh-based jewellery boutique ætla Tell us about your business. I started my business with a view to showcasing and supporting ethical fine jewellery created by a highly select number of outstanding talented local, international and lesser known designers and artisans. Why jewellery? I have always loved fashion and design which I can attribute to my ever-stylish mother, but I had a fascination with jewellery: a combination of the sculptural, 3D nature, the luxurious materials, and the craft and skills needed to produce it.

FLOWER POWER

In celebration of the new V&A exhibition Bags: Inside Out, which opens on 21 November, the V&A and Mulberry have joined forces to create a pretty capsule collection of leather goods with a signature print inspired by a 20th century floral furnishing fabric held in the museum’s archive. The opulent chinoiserie-style pattern will feature on some of Mulberry’s most iconic styles including the Bayswater Tote. Available from 16 November at the V&A Dundee and online at www.vam.ac.uk/shop and www.mulberry.com.

What can we expect from the boutique? A welcoming space with a carefully curated selection of designs, including alternative bridal styles. It will have a personal service and option to order bespoke pieces from specific designers including one of my favourite Scottish designers Ellis Mhairi Cameron - her pieces have a rugged aesthetic, sculpted in 14 carat gold. In keeping with our ethos, most of our designers are happy to rework your inherited gold and diamonds, breathing new life into heirloom jewels. Style-wise, we have beautiful everyday basics, statement pieces, as well as engagement rings. Prices range between £50 - £5,000. ætla will launch at Space at Seventeen on 17 St Stephen Street, Stockbridge, on 13 November where it will be based for six months. You can also shop online at www.aetla.co.uk.

Victoria Rose Evans

Model & photographer Victoria Rose Evans on androgynous fashion,’80s chic and the power of black boots

MY INSPIRATION My mum taught me not to give a f**k what people think. She’s always been my main inspiration; her outfits are consistently fantastic. I also read a lot of photography books and find inspiration from greats like Elliott Erwitt, Helmut Newton, Steven Meisel, Tim Walker and Cindy Sherman. MY CAREER I’ve always had a creative outlet, I started out as a photographer’s assistant at 14, began modelling at 16 and moved into video work around 18. I soon created my own projects and started working with musicians, producing and directing their music videos. Now I live in Leith, just by the Shore, and take on creative projects for fun, model and manage a bar as well as studying psychology full time.

EARLY DAYS I’m from the middle of nowhere up in the Rosie Ochils. Both my parents are musicians and my childhood home doubled up as a recording studio. My dad (Robin Evans) is a record producer so my brother and I grew up with the likes of Manic Street Preachers, Dodgy and The View staying with us. It was always a mad house and definitely helped me form an early sense of identity. STYLE ICONS Agyness Deyn, Ruby Rose, Mads Paige and Cara Delevingne all tick the androgynous, beautifully strong and fun boxes for me, and that’s kind of my aesthetic. I have a bubbly personality and I like to offset it by looking edgy and fun at the same time. WARDROBE MUST-HAVE A good pair of black boots or my raspberry beret. You can give any look an edge if you stick a pair of solid black boots on and hype up the femme power look. ADDRESS BOOK Bleach Please on North Castle Street is top of my list. A look isn’t complete without amazing hair by this salon. Fashion wise, I absolutely love Frontiers Woman, they always have amazing pieces. Be inspired by Victoria’s unique style by following her on Instagram @victoria.rose.evans

SIGNATURE STYLE Can’80s chic detective with a penchant for artistry be defined as a style? I’d say I have a relaxed, expressive, tomboy aesthetic. I like playing with ’80s and ’90s pieces and mixing them up with a modern twist. If it’s a bit weird or kitsch, I’m probably going to love it.

A HOME DESIGNED FOR WELLNESS Nina Plummer, owner of interiors store Ingredients LDN, on how to combat digital overload in the age of lockdown

ormerly our havens, 2020 has turned our homes into our place of work, our children’s school, our social spaces (another Zoom quiz anyone?) – our everything. From our phone screens to our TV screens, we were already spending too much time ‘plugged in’ but now our home lives are entirely immersed in this flat virtual world. Interiors expert Nina Plummer believes that the objects we bring into our homes and the design decisions we make can serve to offer an alternative experience, one that reconnects us to all of our senses and in the here and now. Here, she tells us how to do it…

47

Reignite your sense of smell

From scented candles, fresh flowers, essential oil diffusers, linen sprays, bath salts and room fragrances, there are countless ways to introduce scent into our homes. Alternating smells for different times of the day and the different seasons can change the atmosphere in a room and enhance a mood. The aim is to use our sense of smell in our homes more, noticing and taking pleasure in all the rich experiences available to us, from home baking to the smell of the fire in the living room fireplace.

48

Listen carefully

While music is an obvious way to introduce sound and impact the atmosphere of a room, our homes are full of sounds beyond music alone. When we pay attention to the sounds that the objects and materials in our homes emit we begin to discover a rich world of sensory pleasure. From the creaking of wooden floorboards or a vintage leather armchair, to the sound of the crackling of a fire or the different tones ceramics make when placed on the kitchen worktop. Each one of us is drawn to different sounds. Focussing on the ones we love and incorporating them into the design of our home encourages the enjoyment of this sense.

INTERIORS

Mix up textures

There is so much pleasure in using our sense of touch. The contrast of incorporating a variety of textures, materials and temperatures (the coolness of marble vs the warmth of wood) into the design of our home makes us more aware of our sense of touch compared to the monotony of using only one or a few similar materials. A weighty ceramic bowl, perfectly balanced flatware or the comforting pressure of a chunky blanket are satisfying experiences that can punctuate and draw our attention to the sensual pleasures within the more mundane experiences of our daily lives.

Fire things up

Nothing compares to the atmosphere of a naked flame – sitting near a fire whether from an open fireplace or a log burning stove offers one of the great pleasures of the cooler months. But even when we don’t have a fire to enjoy, lighting candles can recreate much of that same atmosphere. Candles are not just for special occasions and dinners. There is something wonderfully warming about lighting a candle first thing in the morning when we sit down at our computer to start the day.

49

INTERIORS

Love lamps

A sensual home will rely on natural light as much as possible but in the evenings and winter months, an appealing atmosphere in a room rests on the use of varied and diverse sources of lighting. Rather than one bright overhead light, a more sensual experience is created when we use different sizes, elevations, positions and diffusions of light from wall lights, floor lamps, and table lamps. The strategic position of lighting can also encourage behaviours we wish to engage in more. For example, a light placed above the bed or an armchair can create the perfect spot for reading, nudging us to engage in this behaviour rather than looking at our phones.

Invest in the every day

Rather than being a practical afterthought, the objects we interact with on a daily basis like cutlery or plates and bowls should be the most satisfying to use. From ensuring that they function properly to being the objects that are most pleasant to touch and hold, it is always best to spend more on objects of daily use rather than those we only use every once in a while on a ‘special occasion’.

Prioritise comfort

Our focus on the visual has seen many pieces of modern furniture emerge which prioritise aesthetics over comfort and even function. The use of high-quality materials and design considerations that enhance comfort create objects we want to engage with again and again. While selecting objects and furniture for our home that we find beautiful is an important part of creating a home we love, prioritising comfort is just as important for creating spaces we will enjoy living in and not just looking at.

The Light

TRAVEL

The Northern Lights, or, aurora borealis, is one of nature’s greatest spectacles and, believe it or not, Scotland offers some of Europe’s most primo viewing spots. And there’s no better time like the present. The lights rear their heads from October to February when the nights are darker, colder and longer. Here are our top five spots for viewing the Northern Lights in Scotland.

fantastic 1 3

Galloway Forest Park

5

Edinburgh

Home to the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and, in general, a great place to spend the day with heaps of outdoor activities before you settle in for (hopefully) some Northern Lights action. Galloway Forest, Creebridge, Newton Stewart DG8 6AJ; https://forestryandland.gov. scot/visit/forest-parks/galloway-forest-park

2

Cairngorms The crowning jewel among Scotland’s litany of world class national parks, the Cairngorms are transformative even before you’ve settled in to do some Northern Lights spotting. Of course, it’s a cracking spot for that, too. The northerly-facing Cairngorm Mountain car park is a perfect location but if a car park isn’t your idea of magical, The Glenlivet estate is a great spot too.

4

Moray Coast This beautiful part of Scotland has some of the lowest light pollution in Europe which means you have a much better chance of seeing the show. And Moray even has its own astronomy club, SIGMA (found at https://sigmaastro.co.uk), which often arranges watching trips.

Ullapool A great base for exploring with miles of unspoiled beauty to enjoy from this lovely fishing village. This is ideal for a long weekend where you can do some leisurely exploring by day, rounded off by Northern Light hunting, dram in hand, at night.

Believe it or not, if you’re really lucky and the aurora is formidable, you may just be a bus ride and jaunt away from enjoying the Northern Lights in the capital. You won’t have any joy in the city centre though; get yourself to Blackford Hill or up Arthur’s Seat in the wee hours for potential sightings. Or the good people of Porty have prime viewing from their living room windows. The beach is a great place to watch the skies light up the night.

THE POWER OF THE PLANT Why going vegan, and staying vegan, may not be as tricky as you think.

62

L

isten up, people. This plant-based diet and vegan food ‘trend’ isn’t going anywhere fast. The rise in veganism and people converting to a plant-based diet knows no limits. There are more plant-based restaurants cropping up, vegan ready meals are vying for prominent positioning on regular supermarket shelves and there’s a rise in great little businesses offering home cooked, nutrient dense and well-balanced vegan meals delivered to your home. Making the choice to go plant-based has never been easier. “For me, plant-based eating makes so much sense because its natural, simple and delicious,” says Norma Grey, the brains behind New Norm, who is on a mission to make healthy, sustainable eating easy through her food delivery service. “Eating real food has always been important to me. I guess that’s what’s so great about eating plant-based; you have

an endless choice of fruit, veg, beans, pulses, spices, herbs, nuts, and seeds to experiment with. “ Key to making a plant-based diet sustainable is making sure it is balanced. If you are used to eating meat and dairy you have likely been consuming quite a lot of protein and fats without even trying. With a plant-based diet you have to be more intentional to make sure you are getting a good balance of protein particularly into your diet. But it’s not difficult and you do not have to start weighing food or counting calories. Norma sticks to a 50 per cent fruit and veg, 25 per cent wholegrains and 25 per cent proteins and fats rule per meal to keep things balanced and simple.

FOOD AND DRINK

Norma’s top benefits to a plant-based diet More balanced energy; by eating plant-based whole foods you avoid energy peaks and troughs that you tend to experience when consuming foods that are high in refined sugar. Improved digestion; a plant-based diet is high in fibre. Great for our digestion as it helps push food through our digestive tract, meaning you avoid unnecessarily carrying anything your body doesn’t need. Good for your immune system; antioxidants are found in abundance in plant-based foods, they fight off free radicals which damage cells and are associated with many diseases as well as premature signs of aging. Healthier complexion; dairy and sugar are two of the main causes of acne. Removing or reducing these are likely to have a really positive impact on your complexion. Happier gut; bloating, heartburn, indigestion, wind… these are all signs of an unhappy gut. Whether these are little niggles or more serious issues for you, moving to a plant-based diet will ease this burden. Sustainability; plant-based eating isn’t a fad diet it really is a sustainable choice that you won’t want to give up even after you have achieved whatever your short-term goal might be. It also inflicts so much less environmental impact on the planet than an omnivorous diet, which itself makes it worth considering.

TRIED AND TESTED

New Norm’s Feel Good Food box Words Laura Wood

I

enjoy clean eating and my go-to ingredients are herbs, spices and pulses. But a new relationship has recently lead to my more indulgent carnivorous side. While I’ve never proclaimed to be a vegan, nor do I plan to change my diet of choice, I do love this Feel Good box by New Norm. Basically, you receive three healthy meals and two snacks for each of the five days; all planned, prepped, portioned in biodegradable containers, flash frozen and delivered to your door. Even low caffeine tea for drinking is included. For me, it’s the absolute simplest way to eat tasty, nutritious meals. No food waste, no meal planning or food shopping (all you need is a bit of freezer space); the fact that all meals are plant-based is almost secondary. Personal favourites include peanut butter and raspberry bircher and the immune-boosting porridge for breakfast, and Sri Lankan curry, cashew and spinach stew, Thai noodle stir fry, and Moroccan miso soup as mains. Spicy and satisfying. The trickiest part was the sugar comedown on day two but by day three, I had a clearer focus and a new lease of life. You are what you eat, after all, and the saying has never been more true. The Feel Good food box costs £80 and is available at www.newnorm.co.uk

BEST BITS

Coffee: I don’t drink coffee but love a cup of tea at Good & Proper (pictured below) in Stockbridge. It does a great Earl Grey.

Wine: Smith & Gertrude in Stockbridge for a wine flight with cheese. Burger: I have just experienced the most amazing Wagyu burger at the Chop House. Afternoon tea: Palm Court at The Balmoral (below) is the most iconic and special place for afternoon tea. Seafood: I love the ambience of the White Oyster & Seafood Bar. Lots of small plates and chilled white wine. And the Buck a Shuck happy hour is genius.

The freelance events expert talks about her favourite city spots Takeaway: A pint or even a growler of beer from Clark’s Bar on Dundas Street. Fashion shopping: TK Maxx is my happy place. I love the jumble sale vibe and searching out that one-off bargain.

Art: The classroom walls of Stockbridge Primary are where I see most artwork these days. Pampering: All About Eve in Bruntsfied is the queen of nails and I love the girl chat that goes with it.

Walk: Whether I am taking the kids for a stroll or I need some mindful contemplation, the Botanics always provide the perfect location. Lockdown find: Just Eat bikes - a great way to explore the deserted streets of Edinburgh with the kids in tow. After a full antibac rubdown you are good to go. My lockdown lesson: The realisation that lockdown/ corona is a worry you can’t conquer by thinking it through. Therefore, stay calm and know that it too will eventually pass.
