a land yachting experience for four
W
e’ve teamed up with Blown Away to offer four people the chance to try their hand at land yachting on West Sands beach in St Andrews. Set up by twin brothers, Guy and Jamie McKenzie, the company specialises in outdoor experiences but it’s the land yachting that’s really got people talking. Great for adrenaline junkies, it’s essentially a threewheeled buggy with a sail which is propelled along the beach by the wind. It’s been so popular that over the last couple of years, the fleet has grown in size and with the addition of ‘twins’ buggies, they can even take out children sitting alongside an adult. It’s a great activity, just try not to be the one left behind when you’re racing down the beach…
TO ENTER
For your chance to win four land yachting vouchers for sessions on West Sands in St Andrews, visit ionmagazine.co.uk by noon on 22 July and leave your details. The winner will be notified by email and announced in the August edition of i-on. Terms and conditions: The prize vouchers will be valid for six months and booking is subject to wind, tides and availability. Children aged six to 12 are usually in a twin land yacht with an adult. Find out more at blownaway.co.uk
Congrats to last month’s winner, John Kelly, who won a capsule summer wardrobe worth £500 from Andrew Brookes Tailoring. For more exclusive prizes, subscribe to the i-on newsletter at ionmagazine.co.uk

T
he Edinburgh Art Festival is back in town from 25 July to 25 August with some big crowd pullers as well as the best new talent from Scotland, the UK and beyond. With nearly 50 exhibitions across the full programme, it’s tough to choose highlights so we’ve passed the buck and given the hard task to its director, Sorcha Carey. “I always feel that one of the delights of our festival is the real element of surprise, the unexpected connections and discoveries that come out of the breadth and range of the programme - where else will you find Fabergé eggs alongside Grayson Perry tapestries?”, says Carey. But, she tells us there are three exhibitions she’s particularly excited about…

“Bridget Riley is one of the most important artists of the past century. I quite simply love her work, and can’t wait to confuse my eyes with her amazing black and white abstractions at the Scottish National Gallery. The wall paintings will be a must-see. “I’m also intrigued to see the new project that Caroline Achaintre is making for Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s courtyard. She’s an interesting artist, making very playful and humorous sculptures, often using textiles. She’s not massively well known here in Scotland and I’m excited that Festival audiences will have the chance to discover such important new work. “Platform 2019 is our annual showcase of emerging talent, selected by award-winning artists Monster Chetwynd and Toby Paterson, and they’ve come up with a really exciting grouping. I’m looking forward to Harry Maberly’s video exploring the cult of Kate Bush, as well as Joanne Dawson’s response to the political history of smocking (…who knew smocks could be political?).” For more information and full listings, visit edinburghartfestival.com.

THE MUST-DO MUSIC FEST
Davina & The Vagabonds
I
f you don’t think jazz is your thing, you’ve obviously not experienced Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival yet – which is crazy because it’s now in its 41st year. Where on earth have you been? Hitting the city on 12 July, this year’s festival features the best of jazz, blues, swing, funk, soul and gospel from across the world over 130 concerts in 10 days. There’s a big buzz around headliner Kenny Wayne Sheppard, an American Grammy winner appearing in Edinburgh as one of only four UK dates. And we’re excited about two other US guests too – namely Popa Chubby and Davina & The Vagabonds. He might be making his Edinburgh debut but Popa Chubby is a blues-rock veteran known for his blistering live shows, working-man politics, and fierce Hendrix covers, while Davina & The Vagabonds are a veritable festival institution, wowing crowds every year with a rollicking performance spanning swing, boogie, rock n’ roll and New Orleans jazz. We defy you to see her show and not be converted. For full listings, visit edinburghjazzfestival.com.

WHERE TO GO FOR DRINKS THIS MONTH
4
IT’S TIME TO BRAVE THE ELEMENTS, PRAY FOR SUN AND ENJOY A FEW DRINKS AL FRESCO. THIS YEAR, THERE ARE PLENTY OF NEW PLACES THAT’LL PUT YOUR LOCAL BEER GARDEN IN THE SHADE. Rose Street Garden
Bonnie Badger
From 12 July, the gardens at St Andrew Square, will be filled with outdoor drinking destinations including a Tanqueray Gin bar, Kettle One Vodka bar and coffee unit selling espresso martinis in the evening. On George Square from 01 August, there will be another amazing transformation featuring the return of the Treehouse bar as well as a one-off (ticketed) Hendricks Experience Bar and the Lagunitas bar, promising some of the best brews in town. For something a little more refined, pay a visit to the Rose Street Garden, a pretty little space behind The Dome, where giant umbrellas, heaters and blankets provided by partner Bombay Sapphire keep you cosy and comfy whatever the weather. Or if the sun’s out, the terrace at The Forth Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nichols has had a country garden style makeover courtesy of Nyetimber. If you’re more of a gin lover, head over to the Caorunn Gin Garden in Hotel Du Vin’s pretty courtyard. If it’s Friday night and you have a head for heights and fizz, The Tower Rooftop on Chambers Street is where you’ll want to be. From 4pm-10pm each week, they’re offering a bottle of Prosecco and nibbles to share for £25 (the views come gratis). Another must-visit roof terrace to enjoy in the Old Town is the Cold Town House in the Grassmarket which boasts uninterrupted views of Edinburgh Castle and drinks served from a quirky vintage Citroen van. Or you could try Nor’ Loft, the 7th floor rooftop Champagne lounge that opens at Market Street Hotel this month. While out of town, the garden worth travelling for can be found at Tom Kitchin’s new joint Bonnie Badger in Gullane where an outdoor fireplace, bar and kitchen ensure you’ll stay warm and well fed while you imbibe. Last but not least, it’s worth noting that plans are underway for the Shore to be pedestrianised this summer, meaning there could be much more space for outdoor drinking when the sun shines on Leith.

dinburgh might be known as a gin-lovers destination but there are some newer, bigger, whisky contenders coming to town to give the gin distilleries a run for their money. Most recently, Port of Leith Distillery has finally had the go ahead on their proposals for an impressive development on the shore. “The building is going to be a remarkable new landmark in the harbour,” says Ian Stirling, founder of Port of Leith Distillery (pictured below left). “The bottom half will be about production, with the equipment (mash tun, washbacks and stills) all laid out vertically. Above that, we will have our offices, shop, tasting rooms, kitchens, and then an amazing double height bar/ restaurant on the top floors with views across Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth and over to Fife. All being well,
we should open at the beginning of 2021.” And they’re not the only ones with big plans. The Chain Pier Distillery in Granton will soon open a new whisky distillery in Bonnington and the capital’s first single malt whisky distillery in 90 years, Holyrood Distillery, opens this month on St Leonard’s Lane. The new attraction and working distillery promises a hands-on, sensory and educational experience. But the one we’re really excited about comes from drinks giant Diageo, who is busy transforming

one of Edinburgh’s most important landmark buildings into a global visitor experience for Johnnie Walker in the former House of Fraser at 146 Princes Street. The multi-storey, multi-sensory, immersive visitor experience will guide people through the 200-year history of the brand, the art and science of whiskymaking, and take them on a journey through the flavours of Scotland. There’s also plans for rooftop bars with views of the castle and city skyline. Sounds like the perfect place to rediscover our love for Scotland’s national spirit.

ith fears over skin cancer getting more airtime, you might think that protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is the bigger issue but with growing concerns over a serious lack of Vitamin D in Scots, it may be that getting yourself out in the sun is just as important. Speaking at last month’s Hay Festival, leading geneticist Steve Jones urged people to take daily Vitamin D supplements and voiced serious concerns in particular for those of us living north of the border. “Scotland is still the sick man of Europe, he said. “The Scots are the palest people in the world... and that’s because their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D.” The most effective way of getting Vitamin D is from the sun, but in countries like ours with a limited amount of sunshine, this can be easier said than done. And it’s not just a lack of sunshine that is to blame. It’s also a result of us opting to spend more time indoors plugged into our phones and laptops rather than venturing outside; an issue that is even more prevalent in the younger generation. “Children today spend an hour a day less outside than they did 10 years ago. That’s the smartphone and the tablet situation,” said Jones. “Scottish children spend less time in the sun than any other children in the world”. The terrifying result of this is a return of a bone disease that was all but eradicated in the 1950s. “Rickets is coming back and it’s coming back at speed because of a shift in human behaviour which we never thought would happen,” said Jones. Cases have more than doubled in a decade, with around 450 kids being admitted to hospital with the disease each year. So what can we do to combat the problem? Foods like fatty fish, cheese and egg yolks all contain Vitamin D and can boost levels, but that won’t be enough to turn around a deficiency and, as such, we should all be taking a Vitamin D supplement daily. And, of course, we need to be getting ourselves and our children outdoors, whatever the weather. Just be mindful of wearing sunscreen. “There is no scientific evidence that wearing sunscreen prevents the absorption of Vitamin D,” says Edinburgh-based cosmetic doctor, Dr Nestor who treats clients for sun damage every day. “What it does do is protect the skin from harmful UVB rays on a sunny day, and the daily damage of UVA rays which occur no matter what the weather. I would always recommend daily use of at least factor 30 to protect the skin.” So, there it is, pale people of Scotland – get some sun, but always wear protection.

West Sands Beach, St Andrews
Made famous by the opening sequence of Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire, West Sands is Scotland’s largest and best-known beach stretching two miles along the Fife coast with the pretty University town to one side and the swirling seas to the other. It’s also a popular spot for kitesurfing and land yachting, if you’re of the active persuasion.

Camusdarach Beach, Morar
Over on the west coast, just south of the estuary of River Morar, near Mallaig, Camusdarach is a vision of glistening sands and sparkling clear water, forming part of a string of beautiful beaches known as the Silver Sands of Morar. The views are incredible taking in the jaggy outline of Skye’s Cuillin mountain range, the rugged blue peaks of Rum and the steep sea cliff of Eigg.

Coldingham Sands, Eyemouth
Just over an hour’s drive from the capital, Coldingham is one of several pristine beaches quietly situated along the Berwickshire coast. The pretty beach lined with colourful beach huts is a must-visit destination, whether you fancy a stroll, a paddle in the rock pools or hitting the surf.

S
he might have spent her childhood on the balmy golden beaches of Australia but there’s no doubt that Ruby Jean is just at home on Portobello’s windswept shore. Born in Edinburgh, she emigrated to New South Wales at 14 and began modelling but always felt a pull to return to Scotland. Currently living between Edinburgh and Sydney, the catwalk model and former Marc Jacobs muse took some time away from the lens for a chat about fashion, animal rights and what home means to her. What keeps bringing you back to Edinburgh? When I was 16, I would come here for breaks in between fashion weeks. My aunt lives in Leith and we’re very close so it was nice to be with family. I soon realised it was my favourite place and three years ago, I decided to base myself in Edinburgh. I just love it because it’s my roots – in fact, Leith and the Shore are where I feel most connected. Edinburgh is one of the best cities in the world. Where do you most like to spend time in the city? The Shore on a balmy summer night when everyone’s sitting out at the pubs and cafes eating and drinking. Christmas time on Princes Street. Late night in the Old town when the streets are almost silent. I love it all. Do you think Edinburgh is a stylish city? Yes, there are a lot of young and interesting people but I think it’s harder here than other cities to be different and stand out. There are fewer subcultures from my perspective than, for example, Berlin. But the architecture of the city, its bars and coffee shops, along with its high population of students and young people, make it a fun and interesting place. I think there will soon be more happening here in terms of fashion production, photography and design too. Where are your favourite places to shop? Armstrongs Vintage is great for unique finds and I frequent the charity shops in Leith and Stockbridge too, sometimes finding great stuff. The rest of my clothes I usually buy from online boutiques or shops like The RealReal.

LEITH AND THE SHORE ARE WHERE I FEEL MOST CONNECTED” You’ve graced the runways of Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent. How did your fashion career begin? I left school at 16 as I didn’t know what I wanted to pursue and felt like I wanted freedom. I had been told I could try modelling by a few friends and thought why not try my luck so I sent some photos to an agency in Sydney and they signed me. Within a year I was doing shows in New York. I had always loved fashion and performing so modelling was straight away something I enjoyed. I think it’s taught me more about life than I could ever have anticipated. There was a lot of press a few years back when you walked off a shoot when you realised you were expected to model fur. Why was it important to you to make a stand on the issue? I’d hoped that by proclaiming my decision it might motivate others in the industry to say no too. I truly believe it’s only a matter of time until the concept of wearing real fur is barbaric to consumers. It just feels great to be on the right side of history. It was difficult to walk off a shoot but I was happy and proud of myself for doing it. If you were to work in a different industry, where would you be? I’d like to run my own business one day and spend some of my time talking about veganism and the environment. I have a few ideas and things I’m working on but I’m indecisive - I’m a Libra! What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? My auntie always says, ‘What’s for you won’t go by you,’ which has given me a lot of comfort over the years. Sometimes what may seem like a failure is actually a blessing you just don’t know about yet.

MINI FASHIONISTAS
FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR BEHIND THE CHICEST SHIRT DRESSES IN TOWN.
Matching parent/child outfits might sound like a major fashion faux-pas but with three retailers now offering seriously cute minime collections, we defy you not to be converted…
Why shirt dresses? I hunted for the perfect shirt dress every summer for 20 years but never found exactly what I wanted so in 2014, I set out to design my own. My aim was to create a wearable, wardrobe solution for women of all shapes and ages.
H&M’s collection of palm-print separates and a simple white summer dress will ensure you look adorably coordinated in your holiday snaps.
What makes your designs unique? The dresses are scrupulously cut to flatter every figure, with subtle shaping at the waist and darts at the back. The cottons stay crisp throughout the day and I’ve employed men’s tailoring techniques - French seams, double hems, hand knotted buttons which means they are quietly luxurious.
Twin with your little one at Mint Velvet whose Mintie collection for girls aged 3-12 features the same laid back aesthetic as the women’s range. Get the lads in on the action with the minime clothing collection at M&Co offering matching summer outfits for father and son, as well as mum and daughter.
What’s your signature style? I spent 11 years living in New York and I am still influenced by the sharp Manhattan style: classic, clean lines, fine tailoring and beautiful details.
H&M
M&Co
What are your three holiday essentials? I love to wear white on summer evenings, so my white (Kate) shirt dress, a pair of K Jacques St Tropez sandals and boho drop or hoop earrings. Day to evening, done! The Alex Black collection is available at Jane Davidson. For more info visit alexblackcollection.com

INTERIORS
Consider how you’ll use the space before buying furniture. If it’s for entertaining, built seating under a pergola or dining tables with fire pits are great. For relaxing, low seating like sofas and armchairs with coffee tables or even outdoor beanbags work well. Consider quality and durability (aluminum doesn’t rust) and make sure it fits - always measure your space first. Check out John Lewis or Dobbies for some quality styles or visit wayfair.co.uk for a huge selection in every price range. Mirrors create an illusion of space. Contemporary, simple shaped mirrors can be hung on a dark wall to add light in a seated area or styles that look like windows make a great feature. For a wide selection, try primrose.co.uk. Highlight trees and bedding with outdoor spotlights to bring your garden to life. They can be mounted in an elevated position to downlight or placed into the ground on a spike and pointed upwards. Solar lights are a great alternative option to mains powered lights. thesolarcentre.co.uk has a great range and lots of other lighting ideas. Make it feel like an extra room with outdoor rugs, picture frames and canvas art. Polypropylene rugs are weather proof and come in all sorts of colours and patterns. Canvas art can create illusions with views to landscapes. You’ll find a great selection at outdoorcanvas.co.uk and blackcountrymetalworks.co.uk. Just remember to check it’s suitable for outdoor use. Plants hide ugly walls and hard fences. There are hundreds of plants suited to sunny and shaded areas. Choosing them is down to aspect, soil type and aesthetic. For sunny areas, clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine, and wisteria are great. For shaded areas, I like roses, climbing hydrangea and ivy. Create year-round interest by carefully choosing plants with colour throughout the seasons.

MUST-HAVE OUTDOOR ACCESSORIES...
Copa Outdoor Corner Sofa Grey PR01, £999, made.com
Raid vintage shops for interesting objects to use as planters and accessories. Create a pretty hanging plant by placing a small pot with a trailing geranium in a vintage birdcage and suspend from a tree. Or fill an open drawer of a bedside cabinet with colourful bedding plants and use as a side table to place you drinks. Use your imagination. Paint the garden shed to make it a feature and add accessories such as an outdoor clock, fairy or festoon lights. A pale yellow colour can add warmth and light, a darker grey blue can be a subtle, sophisticated look. Water-based paints are matt and less intense compared to oil based which also take longer to paint. For the most fantastic selection of colours, try Little Greene.

THE GEBERIT BATHROOM
4 WAYS TO ENHANCE WELLBEING IN THE BATHROOM With modern life becoming increasingly more fast-paced, taking the time to tend to your personal wellbeing has never been so important. Our ‘always-on’ world often leaves our minds and senses feeling overworked and frazzled. That’s why it’s so vital to help restore that natural balance of calm, and creating a sanctuary space in the bathroom where you can switch off from the stresses of everyday life is the perfect way to do so.
With just a few careful choices in materials, colours, and clever design innovations, mindfulness in the bathroom can be significantly increased, helping to recreate that all-important post-spa feeling of calm and relaxation with every use.
BRING THE OUTDOORS IN It’s well known that a deeper connection with nature can directly improve our sense of health and happiness. Bringing in materials and textures which mimic the great outdoors will help recreate this closeness to nature every day. Opt for wood furniture to warm up your bathroom and create that Scandi-chic ‘cabin in the woods’ feel, or stone and slate for a more rustic, industrial look. Geberit’s Sigma50 flush plate in Mustang Slate, for example, which is made from real slate sourced from Brazil, not only brings a luxurious finishing touch to the bathroom, but also incorporates a stunning texture which cries out to be touched.
INCORPORATE SMART STORAGE In a space which is used daily by numerous people, bathrooms can easily become overflowing, creating a messy and cluttered environment. Keeping surfaces clear and cabinets organised is a crucial step to increasing your sense of wellbeing. Even when space is at a premium, many bathroom designers now
offer a combination of smart storage solutions. Geberit’s Acanto series offers everything from compact cabinets and double vanity units to tall shelving and multifunctional mirrors. What’s more, clever design touches, such as inner storage compartments and anti-slip interior mats provide peace of mind that your bathroom is clutter-free and toiletries are always within easy reaching distance.
INVEST IN TECHNOLOGY Innovations in the home are designed to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. In the bathroom, standard appliances and ceramics now come with a host of cutting-edge features to revolutionise your bathroom experience. Geberit’s AquaClean shower toilet is one of the latest products which encapsulates modern wellbeing, paving the way for washing with water. With a state-of-the-art control panel, the AquaClean offers a gentle, oscillating water spray at the touch of a button, providing that shower-fresh feeling. Users can adjust every element including water pressure and seat temperature, via remote control or through the Geberit AquaClean app. Smart models like these also feature integrated odour extraction technology to remove unpleasant smells, and built-in orientation lights to guide users to the toilet during the night.
OPTIMISE LIGHTING Lighting can often be overlooked in the home, yet it is essential to optimising your sense of wellbeing. Both artificial and natural, lighting should complement
our body’s natural rhythms and moods, providing a bright and airy space in the morning and a soft glow to help you unwind during the evening. For a clever addition to traditional fixtures, opt for an illuminated mirror with adjustable lighting to achieve both the perfect light for a beauty station, and a calming, soft glow for those long, relaxing baths. The Geberit Option mirror series offers a wide selection of illuminated mirrors and cabinets, featuring light-touch sensor control switches to help you create the perfect ambience at any time of day.
ABOUT GEBERIT Swiss bathroom designer, Geberit, brings 150 years of expertise and know-how to create luxurious spaces that combine a modern design aesthetic with industryleading technology. A NIGHT IN THE CITY
NICKY HOWDEN ENJOYS DESIGNER BOUTIQUE STYLE AT THE RADISSON COLLECTION HOTEL, ROYAL MILE
I
t might seem indulgent spending a night away in your own hometown, but sometimes we all need a little indulgence, which is why I found myself checking into the Radisson Collection Hotel with husband and child in tow for one evening of calm luxury amidst the chaos that is usual family life. Situated on the corners of the Royal Mile, George IV Bridge and Victoria Street, the hotel couldn’t be better placed, surrounded by restaurants and bars, as well as history and sights by the bucket load. It’s also just a short stroll from Princes and George Street if you need a quick shopping fix. Inside, the vibe is cool and contemporary with a choice of bedrooms that are stylish and playful offering everything from bold flashes of colours to minimalistic style that keep the focus on the amazing views of the city’s sweeping skyline. There’s also nine sought after suites that have each been designed by leading Scottish artists and designers, worth checking out for something truly special. From the moment we set foot in the airy, open lobby, I felt all those little daily stresses slip away. Every detail has been considered from the drinks trolleys with refreshments at reception to the flat screens and Nespresso machine in our junior suite. There’s even a children’s welcome pack for Lily and a lavender pillow spray by the bed to help with (me) getting a rare good night’s sleep. The cocktails may have helped with that too though. Sipping our drinks in the chic cocktail bar - a flawless Margarita for me and a ‘proper’ Old Fashioned for him – felt like such a treat. In fact, we didn’t want for a thing during our stay, apart from a treatment in the newly launched Sleeping Beauty Salon which was sadly fully booked on our Friday night stay. Still, by the time we checked out the next day, I felt as fresh and rejuvenated as I would have after a leisurely spa weekend. Sometimes all you need is 24 hours away from that hectic schedule and a little slice of luxury. NEED TO KNOW Standard rooms rates start from £165 bed & breakfast. A COUNTRY ESCAPE
AMY FALCONER ENJOYS THE QUIET LIFE AT GARLETON LODGE IN EAST LOTHIAN
N
estled in the countryside, 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh and just over an hour from Glasgow, Garleton Lodge is a small luxury hotel with spectacular views over Edinburgh, the Forth and the East Lothian countryside. You read a lot about Scotland’s wealth of knock-out views but this one is up there with the best, the hotel’s hillside position offering a jaw-dropping vista stretching for miles. Owners Angela and David Cockerton swapped careers in the Middle East to return to Scotland and set up this gorgeous little bolthole to escape the rat race. And now they’re helping us do just that – even if it is just for one night. A selection of spa treatments (we had a glorious facial and body massage), along with a hot tub perfectly positioned right on the edge of the property overlooking that view, make relaxing easy – necessary, even. And nothing here is rushed. We were encouraged to take our time over drinks in the residents’ lounge bar where David has personally put together an impressive wine list and is more than happy to offer recommendations and tastings while you ponder the menu for your evening meal. As the chef, Angela has created a menu of flavoursome Scottish dishes with three courses priced at a very reasonable £35 per person. Non-residents are welcome to dine with them in their restaurant too, so you don’t have to stay over to max out on the sunset and city lights at night. Utterly stuffed and satisfied, we retire back to the lounge for a digestif before a very comfortable night’s sleep in our loft suite. Breakfast the next morning was exquisite, the peace and tranquillity of the setting keeping the chill level at maximum. And when we left, it was with a complimentary box of Angela’s handmade chocolates to enjoy on the journey home. What more could you want?

BEAUTY EXPERT FEATURING HEIDI WHITTLE, NATIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST FOR HOURGLASS COSMETICS
Our bestseller is… Veil Mineral Primer. It repels water so your make-up looks freshly applied all day. My top beauty tip is… create your own perfect light so skin is always glowing. Hourglass has a groundbreaking product called the Ambient Lighting Palette, which has three high tech finishing powders. Each powder creates a soft focus ‘instant filter’ on the skin. In hot weather… don’t over prep the skin. Use a light fluid like moisturiser and something that is versatile and undetectable like Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation stick; it can be your concealer and foundation in one with a 12-hour waterproof wear. My top beauty essentials are… Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser and Hourglass Arch Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel - the tinted formula has micro fibres which gives instant colour, volume and definition. I also love Hourglass 1.5 Mechanical Gel Eye Liner, it’s the thinnest, softest waterproof gel liner. fter having a baby, I vowed to get back in shape. I’d be stronger, leaner, fitter, and healthier. Two years on and I hadn’t even stepped inside a gym let alone transformed my neglected body. Life (and a lot of coffee/ lunches out/excuses) got in the way. But spurred on by the holiday season ahead, something changed at the beginning of the year - perhaps, now was my time. I wanted a well-equipped gym where I could work at my own pace and have free expert advice on demand - there’s nothing worse than having no idea what you’re doing. I also wanted a gym that offered fitness classes galore to work around my schedule and, crucially, one that didn’t cost a small fortune. Turned out my local Craiglockhart Leisure Centre ticked all the boxes. There are lots of different types of memberships but if you want fitness classes and gym combined, go for the Full Fitness option. The induction session with gym supervisor David was a great kickstart to becoming a new, healthier me. He created a workout programme tailored
to my objectives and it included new high-tech machines, kettlebells and TRX. Almost six months on and I feel stronger, fitter and more energised. What I love about Craiglockhart Gym is the endless options, from fitness classes (I’m a big fan of Step for an aerobic workout or Les Mills workouts for something high intensity) to small gym-based classes (the 30 minute 360 circuit/HIIT class is perfect for busy schedules) or going solo and setting your own goals, you can mix and match as you wish. Just make sure you do ask the gym staff for help if needed. It’s like having personal trainers on call, just at no extra cost… what’s not to love?
SIGN ME UP Memberships at Edinburgh Leisure start from £31 per month for gym only. The ‘Summer Pass’ is also now available offering six weeks of unlimited access to the city’s 14 gyms, 9 swimming pools, over 800 Fitness Classes, saunas, steam rooms, Turkish Baths and climbing at the EICA for only £60. Craiglockhart Gym will close for refurbishment mid-July but it will reopen looking better than ever in August. Find out more at edinburghleisure.co.uk
BEAUTY
Could this be Scotland’s most glamorous beauty spot?
W
e don’t know about you but, for us, much of the appeal of a pamper session lies in the beauty of the surroundings. The prettier the better. And Bob & Cloche is just that. The former gate lodge at the gorgeous Gleneagles Hotel has been transformed into a beauty destination with a very firm nod to the hotel’s heritage of 1920s glamour. It’s a real winner and the little extras like free parking, limitless hot drinks and complimentary, bespoke hair conditioning treatments only add to the five-star experience. Whatever the occasion, whether it’s a gettogether with girlfriends to try out the latest nail trends; spoiling yourself with a blow dry before a decadent dinner; or having your regular hair, nail or facial treatment, Bob & Cloche is the perfect spot. To book your unique experience, visit gleneagles.com/wellbeing/beauty/ for more details or call 01764 694419.

PIZZA POP-UP
IT’S A GIN THING
When it comes to gin, we’re a sucker for a sexy bottle which is why the newly designed Porter’s Gin is top of our shopping list this month. The striking new design for the Aberdeenbased brand features a bespoke green glass bottle and beautiful botanical illustrations. Good luck choosing between the Modern Classic, £31.95, featuring juniper and Buddha’s hand citrus and the recently launched Tropical Old Tom Gin, £34.25, featuring guava and passionfruit. If you’d much rather sip a pint than a pinot with dinner, don’t miss this month’s special collaboration between Edinburgh’s Fhior restaurant and beer expert Melissa Cole. The author of bestselling book, The Beer Kitchen will be making a guest appearance at the restaurant on 28 July as owner and head chef Scott Smith cooks his favourite dishes from the book, each with his own unique twist. Congratulations to Ondine who has been named Best Restaurant in Scotland at the prestigious National Restaurant Awards. The awardwinning seafood restaurant on George IV Bridge took the title for the second year running and were one of only five Scottish restaurants on the full list of the UK’s top 100. Other restaurants recognised include The Kitchin, The Little Chartroom, Timberyard, and Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles.
GO WEST
I
t’s all happening in Glasgow this summer with a string of exciting new openings. First up, The Ivy who is set to launch its second Scottish outpost on Buchanan Street. Set across two stylish floors, the new all-day brasserie promises an eclectic menu featuring favourites from lobster linguine to chargrilled halloumi with Padron peppers. Whether you’re after breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a cocktail at the bar, you can expect the same first-class service and buzzy atmosphere which has created such a loyal clientele in Edinburgh. The next new eatery on our hitlist is EVOO, which has recently opened in Cowcaddens. It offers diners a series of Mediterranean-inspired small plates to share including delectable dishes like roast sea bass with asparagus, grilled langoustines with ‘nduja, smoky chorizo stew and charred aubergine parmigiana. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic, Mikaku is a new laid-back, late-night Japanese joint on Queen Street. Offering everything from steaming bowls of ramen and gyoza dumplings to super-spicy tebaski
chicken wings and wakame seafood salad, the ‘Izakaya’ social-dining style offers a unique setting where you’ll feel transported to a Tokyo street. Another venue rocking a seriously urban vibe is the Durty Vegan Burger Club who has found a new home in Finnieston after years of pop-ups. Formerly The Cran, the DVBC is all exposed brickwork dressed up with posters, danger tape and chains. It might be rough around the edges but the burgers are top notch. If you like to hang out in the coolest place in town, head to 226 Gallowgate by the Barras where the old Bairds Bar has had an edgy makeover and boasts a punchy menu of proper pub grub from salt beef fritters with reuben sauce and sauerkraut to classics like boiled gammon and buttered cabbage. Another pub that’s had a rebrand is Public House by Nico which has become The Hebridean Scottish gastropub following Chef Nico Simeone’s culinary tour of the Outer Hebrides. The new menu offers superb ingredients, locally sourced, simply cooked and served with highland flair. EVOO

Meet the Maker INTRODUCING THE FACES BEHIND OUR FAVOURITE LOCAL FOODS
WHO Susie and Steven Anderson of East Coast Cured.
ingredients to deliver new and exciting flavour combinations.
WHAT Hand-crafted, high-welfare, local, premium and innovative Scottish charcuterie.
HOME COOKING Steven loves to make Nepalese momo dumplings with momo achar (hot sauce) - our entire family are obsessed with dumplings and they’re a fun thing to make together. My go-to dish is Harire, a delicious Morrocan lamb soup we discovered on one of our first holidays together. It used to be something we cooked when we had people round for dinner but it’s become a family staple as the girls love it.
WHY We love to travel and exploring the world through food has been central to our relationship. Steven was formerly a brewer but a passion for quality charcuterie and frustration with what we could find locally led him to convert the eaves of our family home into an environmentally controlled ‘curing chamber.’ We began talking with local farmers reputed for their excellent produce and started developing, and perfecting, our first recipes. HOW Fast forward a few years and we bought and renovated a small shop, with a large basement, around the corner from our Leith home, commenced commercial production and East Coast Cured was born. SIGNATURE RECIPE To begin with, we developed a range of classic continental styles using Scottish pork. Our red wine and garlic salami is our interpretation of a classic Italian-style salami, while our saucisson sec is a nod to the French style. Then we started to branch out - our porcini and truffle salami, venison and sloe gin salami, and whisky oak smoked nduja come from a passion for using quintessentially Scottish

FRIDGE FAVOURITES Eggs, spinach, Braw Slaw (from the Edinburgh Fermentarium), Strathearn cheese and nduja. FOODIE SHOPS Leith is amazing for food shopping. We spend a lot of time at the Turkish, Indian and Chinese supermarkets, and we’re conscious of supporting local independents. We pick up a lot of food at the farmers’ markets we sell at too in Perth, Haddington and Bowhouse Food Weekend in Fife. EATING OUT It doesn’t happen often enough but our most regular haunt is Ostara for family brunches. If we manage to get out for a lunch, we’ll head to the Mosque Kitchen in Nicolson Square for a curry or Maki & Ramen sushi bar, off South Bridge. eastcoastcured.com

For cocktails…
Yes, there are great sea views from The Espy but the bar to go to for a really cracking cocktail is The Skylark. This all-day bar eatery is a class act and a big hit with the ‘hipster’ Porty crew who know a thing or two about an Old Fashioned and craft beers. Breakfast, lunch and dinner here are pretty fine too. And kids are welcome until 10pm.
For ice cream…
Apart from the Little Green Van on the prom (parked at the bottom of Bellfield Street), Porty’s very own gelateria, Monny’s is well worth a detour to the High Street, offering insanely good artisan gelato and sorbets in lots of different flavours, made in house daily. Don’t settle for anything less.
EDINBURGH’S BEST KEPT SECRETS… by Louise Dickins
“W
andering along Princes Street you can forget that Edinburgh is by the sea but summer is the perfect time to make the most of our coast. Keep it local with some of the best fish and chips at The Fishmarket in Newhaven. Straight off the boat, sustainable and delicious, you can eat in or take away. Or, for a day trip, East Lothian is a brilliant shout. North Berwick is cool these days and so accessible from the city by rail. It’s got great independent shops, NB Gin, Steampunk for coffee, Bostock Bakery for croissants and Lobster Shack in the harbour for lobster and chips. On dry land, grab a coffee at Drift, a shipping container near Tantallon Castle with views of the Bass Rock and the diving gannets. It’s special.”
For food & fun times… For something new…
It was about time somebody got their hands on the old Cropley’s bar at the bottom of King’s Road on the west side of the prom. And nowadays, as The Boathouse Bar and Grill, the place is barely recognisable. An amazing outdoor decking area (covered and heated when needed) awaits, as do a curated drinks menu, seafood dishes and rib eye steaks. Fingers crossed it opens later this month as planned.
Malvarosa does a pretty mean paella and some of the best homemade tapas in town. For a quick beach picnic, Bross Bagels gives whole new meaning to the much- less-mighty, humble takeaway sandwich. Guild of Foresters pub is always bustling and the beach huts out back offer a wee escape from the crowds. Then, the Dalriada is a great weekend spot for flumgummerie, live folk music and mini music festivals. You’ll also want to hang around in the beer garden overlooking the beach if the weather’s good.
Louise is the owner of Dickins, Edinburgh’s premium letting agent for short term and holiday letting. Her wealth of local knowledge and understanding of the quality end of the market ensures high satisfaction ratings with both guests and landlords. JO MORRIS DEVOURS THE FRESHEST FISH AND FRUITS DE MER AT WHITE HORSE OYSTER AND SEAFOOD BAR ON THE ROYAL MILE
S
o, you know when you discover a restaurant you love then go back and it’s just a teeny bit disappointing? Well I’m pleased to report that the White Horse is NOT that restaurant. In fact, some 18 months after it opened its doors to in-the know locals and lucky visitors stumbling across it, this seafood gem on the Canongate has raised its already high bar even further. We arrive on a sunny Saturday lunchtime and as we are led through to our table, we spot the most fabulous iced glasses of Oyster Stout. Decision one made - oysters and stout to start please. Aficionados of oysters will have their favourites, Loch Fyne are mine and these ones are delicious; creamy and full of flavour. The menu has evolved from starters and mains to sharing plates and is all the better for it. I’m a default habit eater so sharing plates extend my repertoire which is definitely a good thing. Today I am pushed even more as we learn that the crab legs we had been craving before arrival were off the menu- a reminder that excellent food relies on fresh fish so if the fishermen didn’t catch any crabs that morning, you won’t be having any crab for lunch. Oh well. We crack on bravely with a spectacular monkfish satay, £9.50, bonnet cured salmon, £10.50, the “best octopus I’ve ever eaten” (charred with smoked mayo and sea herbs), £11.50, burrata and heritage tomato, £9.50, and sea trout with charred corn, £11.50. And fries. I love chips but they can sometimes be a little heavy with the seafood stealing the headlines. These ones are perfect: string thin and delicious. We choose the house Champagne which is crisp and well-priced to complement a very lovely lunch. Leisurely, great ambience and overall a perfect way to spend an afternoon. AMANDA SOUTHEY BOARDS FINGAL FOR A SLICE OF LUXURY LIVING ON THE PORT OF LEITH
A
plush floating hotel harboured at Alexandra docks in Leith, Fingal offers a dining experience with a difference. With floor-to-ceiling windows and sumptuous Art Deco interiors, The Lighthouse Bar is a stunning spot for a sophisticated evening supper and a few cocktails. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served here during the day but, for the best views of the twinkling port, visit after dark when you can drink in the vista from your table or head out to the deck to sip your drink under the stars. We start with a potent lighthouse Martini that is decanted from a small glass lighthouse served with pickled Sorrento lemon (it’s all in the detail) and accompanied with a little bar snack of espresso martini and truffle cheese flavoured
popcorn to keep us going while we choose our dishes. The menu consists of seasonal small plates to share, made with locally sourced or foraged ingredients. Slightly larger than a starter, we share three dishes between two: salmon (smoked on board) with pink grapefruit, shaved fennel, and fromage blanc, £14; John Dory fillet with asparagus and pea fricassee, baby spinach, and Allemande sauce, £21, and tomatoes, Baron Bigod cheese, basil sponge and black garlic puree, £12. Never one to skip dessert, we finish with an excellent strawberry pavlova, £12, and the cheese plate, £14. With first class service, food and drink, Fingal is a breath of fresh air. It’s not every day that you get to wine and dine on a ship and there is a real sense of history on board which you can feel the moment you walk up the red carpet; an actual dream come true for me.
ALL ABOARD FOR A CHAMPAGNE DINNER
If you have a taste for the finer things, don’t miss the exclusive evening on Fingal hosted by Moët & Chandon on Saturday 27 July where you’ll discover some of the finest vintages the House offers. The Champagne will be paired with a special four-course dinner and there’ll be no need for carriages because you can retire to your own luxury cabin for the night. The Champagne dinner and one night’s accommodation in a classic cabin with full Scottish breakfast costs from £550 per couple (a dinner only option is available for £330 per couple). To book, call 0131 357 5000 or visit fingal.co.uk
