Snow Reflections by Jamie Primrose words Joshua King

A

lthough preparing a 10th anniversary exhibition, Jamie Primrose is - in the art world at least - a fresh face. More importantly, he’s an award-winning and commercially successful face with a penchant for painting the capital in all its guises.

Raised in Edinburgh, Primrose left to study Fine Art in Newcastle in 1990 and only returned in 2003. His homecoming marked the beginning of the artistic career celebrated in this latest exhibition.

Primrose spoke to i-on about Snow Reflections, one of several seasonal depictions of the Meadows. He said: “I’ve painted Central and South America, the South of France, Italy, London but Edinburgh represents a strong element of who I used to be, who I am and it is firmly ingrained in my psyche. I’m continually drawn to capturing a timeless view of the majestic, historic city I grew up in as a child.

“That particular area is very personal to me as I’ve lived in Marchmont for just over four years now. I aimed to capture and convey a special, fleeting moment in time when the light is changing rapidly onto a vista which holds special meaning for me. It’s my emotional response to the relationship between the clear luminous winter light, a myriad of colours, the architecture of Barclay Church and the natural elements of the meadows landscape.”

The iPhone 5 lowdown words Graeme McNaull

Yes, that’s right there’s a shiny new iPhone on the market.

Well, two in fact. The Cupertino giant Apple finally silenced the blogosphere by confirming the arrival of the iPhones at their ‘This should brighten everyone’s day’ event in California last month. And in a change of direction from the board the 5c replaces the existing 5 to attract market share from developing markets such as China, whilst the 5s becomes the new flagship phone boasting revamped internals and an eagerly awaited fingerprint scanner - Touch ID. Available in five bold colours the 5c is made from a single piece of plastic and has minor internal tweaks to battery and wireless connectivity. The iPhone 5s is a solid upgrade from the 5 and has some game changing upgrades, most notably the new 64bit processor, graphics capabilities and for the first time since inception a redesigned home button, doubled as a

fingerprint reader – the latter is expected to be more successful than the failed attempt of the Motorola Altrix back in 2011.

Camera lovers will be impressed at the capabilities of the new camera features too.

Initial reports suggest an underwhelmed response from consumers and shareholders but perhaps that’s down to demanding consumers who were hoping for a redesign, not another iteration. If you own an iPhone 4s or older, my advice is that either the 5c or 5s will be a beneficial upgrade. If you already own a 5 and aren’t fussed, hold out for the 6 which will be out in spring 2014 with redesigned shape, improved camera, NFC and possibly waterproofing.

This is a feel good movie about best friends Davy and Ally after they return from duty in Afghanistan. Set in Leith to a backdrop of expertly intertwined songs from The Proclaimers, the film follows the lads as they attempt to settle back into civilian life.

It covers many real life issues, work, love and tragedy and the actors are fantastic. Go expecting a few emotional moments, Scottish humour and breathtaking shots of Edinburgh. The fact the film is a musical may put some people off but don’t let it, you’ll want to tap your foot along with each song in no time at all. Recommended.

TRICKS AND TREATS AT THE EDINBURGH DUNGEON

C

elebrate the spooky season at The Edinburgh Dungeon, the capital’s Home of Halloween. With three weeks of pumpkin packed mischief planned, it’s set to be a real thriller.

This year Scotland’s top attraction for scary fun will be revisiting the authentic roots of All Hallows’ Eve with a spectacular new show, late night openings and a host of frightfully fun additions to the already action packed tours through the country’s darker history.

Forget the clichéd ghouls and gremlins, witches and wizards that are synonymous with Halloween. The Edinburgh Dungeon will be exploring the beginnings of the annual celebration with a mysterious new show steeped in the Pagan festival of Samhuinn.

On Halloween, the time when the veil between the living and the dead is said to be at its thinnest, pagans historically hosted a Dinner for the Dead, where an extra place was set to try and summon back their loved ones. And so the Edinburgh Dungeon will be extending their table too… only the visitor from beyond might not be who you expected. The new themed show Home of Halloween: Dinner for the Dead launches on 10 October and features ethereal tales from ancient history, mystic predictions and visits from spirits from the other side.

Or up the fear factor with a special after hours tour of The Edinburgh Dungeon between 5pm and 8pm on 26, 27 and 31 of October. Visitors will also be able to delve into the Yucky Dip, a stinky pot luck draw full of treats and a few tricks for good measure.

Of course, Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without a bit of fancy dress, and the Shop of Horrors is fully stocked to transform mere mortals into the most macabre of characters.

And as the Dungeon loves dressing up, kids wearing fancy dress over Scary Style weekend on 26 and 27 October will receive discounted entry.

S

peak to people behind the scenes in the music industry and they’ll all tell you the same story, that Chvrches are not only potentially the biggest phenomenon to come out of Scotland in some time, but that they could be one of the biggest pop groups in Britain if not the world by this time next year.

It’s kind of an open secret, and the clutch of high quality and much admired songs they’ve already released has given us a

compelling insight into what they’re about. For all the build-up though, it seems that right now is the time for the group to start delivering.

The debut album The Bones of What You Believe has just been released and these dates are part of Chvrches’ (it’s pronounced “Churches”, they just didn’t want to confuse your search engine) first large scale UK live tour, although

music | 23 the trio have previously played support for Passion Pit, Two Door Cinema Club and even synth icons Depeche Mode on the continent. At once they seem perfectly prepared for the challenge and a little wide-eyed at the prospect, for these are musicians more used to swimming in the shallower waters of Glasgow’s rich alternative music scene.

All three have form in bands of a certain high quality, although none have previously been involved with anything like the clean, soaring electronic sound of Chvrches, a style at once all their own and in a degree of debt to kings and queens of synthetic pop like Prince and Robyn.

signed post rockers Aereogramme and Unwinding Hours; and Martin ‘Doc’ Docherty played for some years as a touring member of much loved alternative outfit the Twilight Sad. The trio were the result of a lucky union, with old university friends Cook and Docherty in the midst of an uncharacteristic (at least by the standards of their other bands) studio experiment with digital pop when Cook was charged with producing Blue Sky Archives in his day job as a studio engineer. The pair realised that Mayberry’s was the voice they had been searching for, and the trio set about creating a bunch of polished demos in Cook’s studio.

These tracks ended up being a very short step away from effervescent radio and blog hits like Gun, Lies and probably their signature track so far The Mother We Share, the icy rhythm of the music perfectly counterbalanced by Mayberry’s warm and definitively Caledonian tone. Despite the eminently chart worthy sound, the band make efforts to point out they aren’t a committee designed pop product, and it’s this sense of self which helps set them apart.

ndrea and Roslyn are the duo behind the awardwinning Rocco Venezia Prosecco Superiore. Here they talk about work, family life and the day they first met.

Andrea on Roslyn “I met Roslyn on a work night out in a west end bar. I’m from Venice but had been working in Edinburgh for one year and had no plans to settle here. When I saw her I thought she was far too cool and beautiful for me... that was 14 years ago. Now we’re married with two lovely daughters.

“Working together means we can see each other much more. Roslyn is incredibly talented and driven, I have learnt so much from her. She is also an amazing mum and wife, a very good business person and incredibly exact on detail which can frustrate me at times but keeps me on my toes.

One of the biggest challenges was when our children were very young. Running a business while changing nappies, still sleep deprived, is not an ideal situation but the good times outweighed the stress.”

Roslyn on Andrea “I had just come back from Italy with work when my friend persuaded me to go for a drink and I met her colleague Andrea. I remember thinking he was good looking but I had planned to go to France or Italy as a young architect and I was very driven but ‘the best laid plans....’

“We moved to Italy 12 years ago and whilst carrying on in our separate careers, we soon realised there was a demand for a quality Italian Prosecco. And so with a family winery on our doorstep we launched Rocco Venezia. A year later we brought our range of Prosecco to Edinburgh realising there was a gap in the market there too.

“Andrea and I have the same belief in what we do whilst we have completely different strengths. I admire Andrea’s strength and selflessness, he is also level headed and pragmatic. We talk and understand each other and have two adorable children which help separate work and family life.”

ileen is the area sales manager for Sheila Fleet, an Orcadian jewellery designer who recently bagged an OBE in recognition of her service to the jewellery industry. Based in the Gallery in Stockbridge, Eileen enjoys the daily diversity of her role and working for a company and talented designer she truly respects, whose values have never changed.

I’d describe my style as… rather mixed, I wear what I think suits me and is appropriate for certain occasions.

My favourite place to shop in Edinburgh is… Stockbridge, it’s so diverse with lots of different shops and galleries. If you’re eating out there is also every type of place you could wish for.

My recent find was… a Sheila Fleet jewellery bangle from her Tidal range. Just an amazing piece of designing, it’s wearable and timeless too.

When it comes to style I think it’s important to… feel confident in what you are wearing. Look at yourself in the mirror and be honest, if it suits you and flatters your shape then wear it.

arin has been teaching Callanetics from her Morningside studio for the past 20 years. Prior to this she was a professional ballet dancer but as she confesses, there are similarities between her two passions.

He works as a bartender at 99 Hanover Street and since becoming a DJ in 2012 now plays at various hotspots across the city.

What’s your favourite album of all time? Thriller by Michael Jackson, it’s an absolute classic.

Which artist do you think is most deserved of fame? I’d have to say Ray Charles. I think he has proved that no matter what hurdles life throws at you, if you have a passion for something, go and get it.

Best gig you have been to? I saw Chic and Nile Rodgers at RockNess last year, just wow!

My guilty pleasure is… tune has to be Yeah Yeah (the instrumental) by Bodyrox and artist UB40.

The CACI facial is a bit more technical than your average facial. Shona placed tiny electric probes around the problem ageing areas to encourage toning and tissue repair. The process is not painful although I did taste a faint metallic taste at the back of my mouth (apparently from teeth fillings). LED lights tackle deep lines and wrinkles and Ultrasonic skin peeling removes impurities from the skin’s surface.

very year close to 55,000 people are diagnosed in the UK with breast cancer. That is the equivalent of one person every 10 minutes. The good news is survival rates are improving.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and here i-on dispels some myths and polishes up the facts on breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK, making up almost 30 per cent (3 in 10) of all cancers in women.

About 1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some time in their life, with approximately 400 men each year also diagnosed with the disease. Only 5-10 per cent of breast cancers are thought to be linked to an inherited breast cancer gene so while stories like that of actress Angelina Jolie’s experience of breast cancer make headlines, they are far from typical with the biggest risk factor for developing breast cancer still being age.

Some key signs of the disease to look out for are a change in size, shape and/or texture of the breast as well as pain or swelling in the area. hey say that no two pregnancies are ever the same.

Married for a few years, Catherine Gauld found out she was pregnant with her first child on Valentine’s Day 2008. “George’s pregnancy was very smooth. I did lots of exercise, getting up at 6am to do yoga and then walking across town to work at Grant Property Investment. I was determined to keep in shape. The birth was long (20 hours of labour) but the recovery was quick and I left hospital the next day.

“With Laila I suffered from severe nausea from day one and I spent quite a lot of time in hospital. The only highlight was having my scan and hearing that I was going to have a little girl. I was so happy that I burst into tears. Laila was born prematurely after a very quick labour and she had to spend a month in the antenatal ward. Then I suffered for a short time from post-natal depression, which was a difficult time.

Thankfully I had some amazing support from friends and family to get me through the first few months. I later found out about a wonderful charity in Edinburgh that supports women like me through PND, called www.crossreach.org.uk. They support women by offering counseling, nursery care and group therapy.

It’s an organisation that every woman should be aware of and one I want to support however I can in the future.

ICONIC EDINBURGH Rose Street words David Hicks

N

amed after the English national symbol, Rose Street is a key part of the New Town plan, but was never intended to be on the grand scale of Princes or George Street. Today the far west end of the street gives the best impression of how it originally looked, with modest three storey homes built for prosperous tradesmen and shopkeepers.

Houses and businesses were not the only inhabitants of the street. Behind No.180 Rose Street there was once a court for playing rackets, a fore-runner of the modern game of squash.

The enclosed court was 30 feet high, with dark coloured walls to show up the hard white ball. One of the first fire stations in the UK was set up at No.66 Rose Street in 1824, with a team of 12 firemen equipped with a hand cart.

Through the 1800s Rose Street became known as a seedy backwater. The census of 1841 is rather blunt about the occupations of many residents at No.44, with Mary Wilson and Margaret Douglas listed as brothel keepers along with seven prostitutes, one of which was only 15 years old.

Pubs are perhaps Rose Street’s most famous institution, and the Abbotsford is one of the oldest. It was opened in 1902

by Jenners, after an extension to the department store saw a popular bar demolished. Today the pub and its interior are listed and it retains a particularly good example of a carved mahogany island bar, designed to give the barman a good view of all his customers. In the 1950s Rose Street’s pubs became well-known as the haunt of a new wave of Scottish poets.

By the 1960s things had started to change as tenement flats started to give way to antique shops and boutiques. In 1973 the transformation was completed as the section between Castle Street and Frederick Street became the first pedestrianised street in the city and Rose Street suddenly became fashionable again.

ar from mad professors’ favourite home decoration, taxidermy pieces are becoming the new coveted items for fashionable homes.

The artisan trade has shaken off its stale image in favour of something newer and wholly more chic. In fact, taxidermy epitomises all that is “Britishness.” It evokes country lodges with roaring fires and something luxurious and ostentatious that unlocks the door to the Lord or Lady of the Manor inside all of us.

One of the most well known names in UK taxidermy is George Jamieson who creates bespoke works of from the idyllic country setting of Cramond Tower in Edinburgh. “Taxidermy is the most basic form of art,” explains George. “It gives people a connection to the real world. The art side of taxidermy is really picking up and I think this is because the younger generation doesn’t often see that wild side of the world.”

His sample work is simply stunning. The furs and feathers are beautifully kept and the poses are tasteful and realistic.

Yet George prefers to see himself as an artist rather than a businessman and only works on commissioned pieces.

However, he does hold training days for £225 which will explain and take you through the whole taxidermy process, with a small bird to take away with you as a keepsake.

One of the reasons for the original decline in interest for such products lays with concerns from animal rights activists. Previously animals which were stuffed may have been from hunting trips and killed for this sole purpose.

Interior designer Marc Bush agrees. “The trend fuses Victoriana with vintage to produce a look that can either be hard edged and masculine or quirky and feminine, making it one of the strongest crossover trends in years.

We have seen the development of this trend from delicate birds to owls and now toadstools and taxidermy breathe new life into this look.”

ivino Enoteca has garnered reputation over the years as one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems and it’s not surprising – going on first impressions alone the subterranean Italian wine bar has carved out a niche in the market for discerning fine wine drinkers in the city. But this place is more than just a sophisticated wine bar, it’s also the sister restaurant to Vittoria and La Favorita and serves up a myriad of classic, authentic Italian dishes.

Set along the cobbled Merchant Street and nestled underneath George IV Bridge, eating here is all about experiential dining. The ambient lighting, luxe interior and lounge music set the mood perfectly whilst the open kitchen serves as a reminder that food is most definitely on the menu.

The food offering is classic Italian seasonal dishes and includes popular starters such as the house L’Anitpasto Divino, £8.50, a delicious selection of cheeses and salami from some of Italy’s best D.O.P, marinated vegetables and homemade chicken liver parfait served with artisan bread. But there are also more

experimental dishes on offer. The pan fried scallops on a bed of squid ink polenta served with Italian spicy sausage, £10, is a good example and the marriage of textures and flavours work well together.

Mains on offer include the obligatory steak dishes and traditional pasta dishes with juicy rich minced pork ragu. We tried the homemade ravioli, £11.95, filled with chicken and pancetta. Served in an arrabbiata sauce, it was delicately spiced so that all the flavours shone through. The meaty flakes of roast cod topped with an Italian cheese crust on an Heirloom tomato salad, £15.50, was another success. Simple yet effective it was light and flavoursome. Satiate your sweet tooth with the tiramisu, straight up and the way it should be made with Savoiardi biscuits, mascarpone cheese, coffee and Amaretto liqueur, £5.50.

For the best of both worlds try the Combo Flight which includes a selection of red and white.

ity centre bars can often have a different atmosphere on a Friday night. The after work crowd filtering out when hunger gets the better of them can leave a place flat. But that’s not the case at the Newsroom. In fact, to my surprise the spacious bar had a different crowd, almost trendy without trying hard, and a warm atmosphere.

The background music set the scene well and the restrained mix of pop classics and chart toppers were taken up a notch up as the crowd thickened around 8pm in anticipation of the Friday night DJ spinning soul, funk and hip hop.

If you’re someone that finds an extensive cocktail list overwhelming, then the selective menu here will be right up your street. The Headline cocktails in particular are a good option. Shaken all night long they are four of the most popular tipples and each cost £4.95. My other half tried the Mai Tai - Bacardi Gold rum shaken together with Cointreau orange liqueur. Short and frothy with a zest of lime, it was fruity and refreshing. I opted for the Passionberry Fizz, a zingy mix of

passionfruit liqueur and gin shaken with strawberries. Moving onto the main list we tried a Classic Martini for £7.95 and this season’s hot flavour Elderflower and Pear Daisy, £7.95.

Delicious. Seeking nourishment we took a look at the Wee Bits and Wee Bobs menu. More than just nuts and chips, the bar snacks are generous and tasty and include dishes like spicy pan seared prawns for £5.95.

Tipping the hat to its namesake with walls lined with newspaper cuttings, the bar’s newspaper theme is fitting without being tiresome. A good place for people watching, The Newsroom has an easy going ambience and well thought out drinks menu. If you’re out for the night get your dancing shoes on and head downstairs to the intimate 511 club, open at weekends.
