IN SHORT Heather Holliday, sideshow star of Limbo

What brings you to Edinburgh? I’m in the spectacular new production of Limbo in the Spiegeltent in St Andrew Square. It includes heartstopping illusions and breathtaking dance moves… people really should expect the unexpected. What’s the highlight of your career so far? Performing in Limbo - travelling with amazing performers is entertaining and challenging. Swallowing multiple swords, eating and breathing fire and whip cracking is great too. What’s your prized possession? My antique swords would be very hard and expensive to replace. What’s your dream? To see the world, luckily I might just get to do that touring with this show. HAIM

O

ne of the breakthrough acts of 2013, Los Angeles group Haim have got everything going for them. Three beautiful young women with talent would rarely find it hard to avoid attention, of course, but it helps that the trio of sisters at the core of the band are sharp, articulate and seemingly unable or unwilling to play the pop game on anything but their own terms. Their debut album Days Are Gone was among the best of the year, a breezy indie selection whose two greatest influences

were the upbeat melodies of Stevie Nicks-era Fleetwood Mac and the smart, streetwise rhythms of female R’n’B groups like En Vogue and TLC. Sisters Este (the eldest), Danielle and Alana (the youngest) Haim are all ‘Valley girls’ from Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, and they grew up in fairly middle class surroundings. Their parents are both estate agents, and they informed the girls’ love of ‘70s and ‘80s soft rock by groups like Fleetwood

Mac and the Eagles. In fact, their parents went one step further – when they were younger, the family all played together in a classic rock covers band called Rockinhaim. They inherited their love of driving rock, they say, from the fact you have to get in the car to go anywhere in LA and you might as well have the stereo on. Danielle and Este were also in the briefly signed group the Valli Girls. With six years and multiple instrumental skills between them, the trio also benefit from Este’s academic musical background, while Danielle has played in the backing bands of Jenny Lewis, the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas and Cee-Lo Green. All through this period, Haim the band was active as a semi serious hobby, but it wasn’t until 2012 that the sisters gave it real focus and it became a going concern. After that things moved quickly, with their debut EP Forever debuting earlier in the year, their appearance at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas winning them a record deal, and tours of the US with Mumford and Sons and the UK with Florence and the Machine following before the year was out. It was also around this point that they released their first real signature song Don’t Save Me, an irresistibly summery sound which was followed up by the equally memorable Falling and The Wire. There’s been something hard to grudge about their continued rise over the last few months, from singing onstage with Primal Scream at Glastonbury to seeing Days Are Gone hit number one upon its release, and it’s a momentum which makes you eager to hear what they might do next. Haim play the ABC, Glasgow, on Sunday 12 December. haimtheband.com

Colin Church and Martin Luney photo Susie Lowe

E

dinburgh born Colin Church (pictured right) and Belfast native Martin Luney became business partners in the early noughties and are now the proud owners of Big Red Teapot Edinburgh Ltd, The Blackbird, Hamilton’s and Treacle. Here they discuss business, friendship and being semi-naked in wigs. Colin on Martin “At times Martin and I do argue like brothers. We always make up in the end and then normally have lunch. Actually he’s more driven about food than anyone I’ve ever met. “We’ve faced many obstacles in the last five years, opening Hamilton’s, Treacle and The Blackbird are obvious ones. The best part of working together is that we trust one another and we’re friends. We both have determination to stand out in a highly competitive market and never stop thinking about where we’re going. “We also help support each other on a work and personal level, which is key to any relationship. He even helped me pick out my fiancé’s engagement ring and is the Master of Ceremonies at my wedding.” Martin on Colin “I knew we would instantly get on because my first impression of Colin was him almost naked, wearing a Rod Stewart wig. “We’ve been through a lot, so we’re a lot closer now. We both have very different creative processes and the combination of the two allows us to have a very individual approach to everything we do. We’ve always had different tastes – that’s why we work well together. It’s great to have a business partner to bounce ideas off; the fact that we are friends just makes it more enjoyable. “The bar industry is very challenging in today’s market. There are many challenges every day for us but we are always planning new ideas and projects, so 2014 looks like it’ll be quite exciting.”

BEAUTY Laura Whitmore

I

rish TV presenter Laura Whitmore knows a thing or two about fashion and beauty. A regular at Fashion Week and Pond’s Institute brand ambassador, the 28-year-old is a firm believer that less is more and if you have a good skincare regime, eat well and drink plenty of water, your skin will look great with minimal make-up. My daily beauty ritual is… to cleanse, tone and moisturise. That’s what my mother taught me and I’ve always done it. She has great skin. My favourite beauty icons are… Classic beauties like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. I also really like Kate Moss and the Olsen twins. The best way to update your look from day to night is… I think a red lipstick like Russian Red by M.A.C. dresses up any outfit. My beauty essentials are… Evian Facial Sprays, they’re really hydrating and leave my skin looking really dewy, Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser and the new Natural Beauty Cream, they give a really nice base for my make-up. I also love Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, Benefit Bad Gal Mascara, Inglot eye liners, Clinique Chubby Sticks and Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.

L

aurie’s the manager of Jake’s Place, a specialist American/Scottish craft beer, whisky and bourbon bar on Market Street. When he’s not working he keeps things quick and simple in the culinary department to make the most of his time off. Your signature dish at Jake’s Place? It’s our slow braised giant turkey drumstick with hickory BBQ sauce, it’s a beast. You’re off work, where have you always wanted to try for food in Edinburgh? I’ve still never been to Restaurant Martin Wishart which is terrible as I’ve lived in Leith for over 10 years. The chef you most admire? I’d probably go for Anthony Bourdain, the author of Kitchen Confidential. It’s a great book and really lifts the lid on hospitality and some of the horrendous conditions that chefs endure. If you could invite five famous people, living or dead, to a dinner party who would they be? George Best, Keith Moon, James Hunt, Oliver Reed and the legend that is Sir David Niven. Those boys would be a riot and have a few stories to tell. The only thing I wouldn’t look forward to is the hangover.

MY I-ON EDINBURGH Alex Buchanan photo Susie Lowe

A

n Edinburgh man who now lives in the Borders with his wife, two boys under five and their dogs, life is never quiet for Alex Buchanan. He’s also co-founder of the Catering in Scotland website and the successful CIS Excellence Awards, for the hospitality and tourism industry. Your earliest memory of Edinburgh Washing my face in the dew on Arthur’s Seat one morning, aged about five. Which areas best reflect your personality? I’d like to say Bristo Square and the University of Edinburgh buildings (wise and historically relevant) but I’ll just go for the area around Arthur’s Seat (friendly and open). What would place Edinburgh more firmly on the map? Better facilities on our beaches and decent looking parliament building. The city’s best kept secret? Bell’s Diner in Stockbridge; there is no point in eating any other burger. Ever.

Around the city where you’ll find me:  Lunch with friends: One Square or The Salisbury Arms  On a Sunday: Canadian Brunch at Luca’s in Morningside  Having my haircut: Larry’s Barber shop

Helen Wilson, clinical psychologist, NHS Borders photo Susie Lowe

The family unit: Helen, 33, husband, Paul, 39, Lawrie, 3 and Clara, six months (photographed at four months).

“I

found out I was pregnant with Lawrie on Christmas morning 2009. I was so excited that I made my husband drive around Edinburgh to find a pharmacy that was open so I could buy another pregnancy test just to be sure… Another few tests ensued in the first 12 weeks. With Clara, I trusted the first test I did. “I have very fond memories of both pregnancies and labour (rose tinted perhaps) and would happily go through them again, much to the fear of my husband. “As a mum I do miss the spontaneity of going out for lunch with the girls and getting home at 3am. In general things have

changed a lot since having children, but it’s all for the better. It’s easy to lose sight of what is truly important in life and I think you gain a certain perspective when you have children. I can rationalise and move on far more easily than I did before. I like being closer to my parents and Paul’s family, and I’m guaranteed a laugh every day when Lawrie says or does something new. Mostly though it’s immense the capacity you have for loving your children. “As a family, we make an effort to have one family day at the weekend and we don’t really care what we do. We would happily take Lawrie to any park and we enjoy walks along the

Water of Leith to feed the ducks. Porty beach on a sunny day is lovely, and Lawrie would go anywhere that involves steam engines or fire engines so often our weekend trips involve one or other of these vehicles. “I think we’re quite spoilt in Edinburgh so it’s a good place to raise a family. It has a huge variety of activities and facilities on its doorstep as well as being steeped in history and opportunities for learning. I can access whatever I need without any real effort (although I find having a car very helpful with two children). But I also miss the community feeling that you gain in more intimate, rural or suburban areas. “Our ideal family home is a detached rural property somewhere between Edinburgh and my work in Selkirk. It would need some renovation for my architect husband to get his teeth into. Our flat in Edinburgh is great and we have loved living in Leith for the last 12 years but it’s now time to move on.”

ONE TO WATCH Spread the joy of Christmas amongst the whole family with A Christmas Carol at the Lyceum. Starring Christopher Fairbank as Scrooge, the classic tale shows Scrooge the error of his miserly ways through visits from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. With Christmas carols, evocative sets and the odd flurry of snow, it’s bound to melt even the hardest of hearts. Suitable for ages six-106, A Christmas Carol runs until 04 January 2014. Tickets from £14 at www.lyceum.co.uk/christmascarol

A winter walk at Pressmennan Wood near the village of Stenton in East Lothian is right up our street, and it’s one walk that even the kids will love. Artist Robin Wood has let his imagination run wild and created a magical world of Glingblobs and Tootflits who live high up in the trees and on the forest floor along the hour long trail. Lovely. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk

TRIED AND TESTED Aveda Stress-Fix™ Body Massage words Gemma Haigh

W

hen hectic city life gets a bit too much, Aveda’s StressFix™ body massage is the perfect remedy, promising to relieve tension and leave you feeling calm and rejuvenated. It’s part of a range of treatments at Edinburgh’s new Aveda Lifestyle Spa in the Scotsman Spa & Health Club. From facials and massages to body wraps and manicures, each of the treatments uses Aveda’s renowned plant-based skin and body care products. The Stress-Fix™ body massage is available in four different timeframes to suit even the busiest of stress heads. I opted for a 45 minute slot which began with the therapist checking whether there were any particular troublesome areas she should concentrate on – shoulders I asked, the bane of sitting at a desk five days a week. The treatment is clinically proven to reduce feelings of stress and uses a relaxing aroma of lavender, lavandin and clary sage

to help transport you to that calmer place. First focusing on my shoulders and back, the therapist used a combination of Swedish and deep tissue massage techniques, working her way around my tense muscles and kneading out knots with a firm yet pleasant pressure. The therapist then moved onto my feet, using foot reflexology and acupressure points to help me further unwind. The treatment finished with a therapeutic scalp massage to ease away any head tension and I was left feeling completely de-stressed from top to toe. Aveda Stress-Fix™ body massage, £65 for 45 minutes. For more information or to book a treatment, Tel: 0131 622 3800 or email spa-reception@thescotsmanhotel.co.uk. did you know...? Rudolph was created by a department store in 1939. The management of Montgomery Ward asked one of their copy writers to invent a character for a freebie colouring book which was to be handed out by the store Santa. Rudolph with his red nose was a huge hit and Montgomery Ward gave out 2.4 million copies in the first year alone. 10 years later the song was released.

what’s on your christmas list? Although some say Christmas has become too commercial, for many people gift giving generosity embodies the spirit of the season. As kids everywhere start penning their wish lists to Santa, here are four unusual gifts Father Christmas might want to avoid:  Myrrh - The third wise man gave baby Jesus a gift of Myrrh but nowadays few people really know what it is. Myrrh was a perfume put on dead bodies to disguise the smell and it showed that Jesus would suffer and die. Maybe stick with gold this year.  Savannah - During the American Civil War Union General William T. Sherman disappeared with some of his men for six weeks. Then, on 22 December 1864, President Lincoln received a telegraph: “I beg to present to you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition.”  Bespoke links - The Neiman Marcus Christmas Book sells only the most decadent gifts including your very own golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. It will only set you back £580,000 plus construction costs.  Battery powered rodents - In 2009 kids were clamouring for Zhu Zhu Hamsters, a range of robotic rodent pets. Demand was so high that customers at Edinburgh’s Jenners store bought in bulk and sold the hairy remote controlled creatures for hundreds of pounds online.
