THE 1975 Words: David Pollock
D
escribed by their singer Matt Healy as “four stoner muppets”, The 1975 were one of the most obvious yet somehow least likely pop successes of 2013. For a start, their frontman’s own pedigree doesn’t suggest pop stardom to anyone raised on a diet of populist telly in the 1980s and ‘90s, considering his dad is Auf Wiedersehen Pet star Tim Healy and his mum is sometime Coronation Street, Loose Women and Celebrity Big Brother alumnus Denise Welch. They’re roots which place his family firmly in the north east of England, but his group are one of a new generation of bright pop outfits to have emerged from Manchester in recent years.
Healy and his fellow members of The 1975 – guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, drummer George Daniel – all met when they were pupils at Wilmslow High School in the Cheshire suburbs around Manchester, and their first musical experiments together came when the youngest of their number (Daniel) was 14. This was back in 2002, and the next few years were spent practising their craft under a variety of guises. Among the names which went up outside the music bars of their city were Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep and Drive Like I Do, playing a mixture of covers and their own material. It wouldn’t be until a full decade into their career,

such as it had been, that they would start using the name The 1975. Apparently the inspiration for it came from a book of Beat poetry which Healy was given by an old psychedelic rocker who he met on holiday in Majorca one summer, reading it much later and finding that someone had inscribed the date ‘01 June, The 1975’ on the inside back cover. If it was an omen, it was a good one. Their rise has been swift, not necessarily because young bands getting places quickly is such a strange occurrence, but because they’ve met with truly huge success in the matter of months they’ve been active. Starting out as The 1975 at the start of 2012, their early EPs Facedown and Sex met with moderate success later in the year, including national radio airplay, before Chocolate hit the UK top 20 early in 2013. All of the above came to define a sleek guitar pop sound with summery reggae edges, although Chocolate’s pinnacle of chart success to date suggests that it isn’t in the more transient world of singles fame that they’ll make their mark. Following support dates for Muse and The Rolling Stones, and tour dates around the world, their self titled September debut album went straight to number one in the UK, as well as breaking the top 30 in America and the top 10 on the US rock chart. Reportedly their new material channels Bobby Brown and Alexander O’Neal, the truth of which this show should demonstrate. The 1975 play the Academy, Glasgow, on Friday 07 February.

YOU AND ME
Ben and Joe Goodwin Words: Aimee Stanton ∙ Photo: Susie Lowe
T
here’s nothing quite as special as an exquisite piece of jewellery, something experts Joe (right) and Ben Goodwin of Goodwin’s Fine Jewellery and Silver know all too well. The brothers are third generation managing directors for the family run company in the capital and have been working together since the early ‘90s. Here they talk sibling rivalry, style and business. Joe on Ben: “I think two heads are better than one. That’s how Ben and I manage to support each other. We tend to have the same business mindset which helps too. Even though we’re brothers who are working together there is less sibling rivalry nowadays. We have honesty and trust in every aspect of the business. “Even though it didn’t pan out, the manic process of opening our Bank Street branch is probably the most memorable time we’ve faced together. There were so many varied aspects to setting up the finance, the stocks, the staff and the refit. We’re now looking to the future and plan to expand the business through refinement of stock.”

Ben on Joe: “When it comes to jewellery styles I think I’ve become less colourful and Joe is now more colourful. I tend to have more Georgian classic tastes than Joe. He is completely reliable and I’m more even tempered and consistent in my decisions. The hardest part of working together is when our management styles clash but we understand that space and time apart to pursue different interests at work or outside it is key to working together in the long term. “For the future we want to make little improvements all the time where we can in all aspects of the business and keep our enjoyment and enthusiasm for the trade evident to each other and our customers.”

orking a 90 hour week and being on call 24 hours a day isn’t for everyone but for Tony Crolla, owner of the Vittoria Restaurant Group, it’s simply a lifestyle choice. His parents opened the first restaurant in 1970 but now Tony and his wife, Angela, are at helm of the company who own a number of eateries around the city including Vittoria and the award-winning gourmet pizzeria La Favorita. What gives Edinburgh its edge? It’s a beautiful city where there’s always something happening. It’s got a buzz 365 days a year. Your preferred area in Edinburgh? Leith Walk, it’s a real melting pot of the city with an eclectic cross section of people. The city’s best kept secret? Divino Enoteca, my Italian wine bar and restaurant on Merchant Street. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Portobello Beach. It’s a great place for a bracing walk and to clear my head.
Around the city Where you’ll find me: Dining out: Kyloe Restaurant & Grill. Having my haircut: Charlie Miller. The shop you’ll always find me in: Kenny Dunn Motors because it’s always got lots of beautiful shiny cars.

12 Years a Slave
FILM 2014
From time travelling mutants to Oscar worthy acting and directing, we give you a heads up on the must-see films coming soon to a cinema near you… Words: Michael Clancy
12 Years a Slave UK release date 24 January In his first two feature films Hunger and Shame, director Steve McQueen offered an intimate examination of lonely and damaged men. 12 Years a Slave tells the story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was betrayed and sold to slavery in 1841. Based on Northup’s own autobiography, the
cast is a full of acting riches including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup, regular McQueen contributor Michael Fassbender, as well as Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Brad Pitt and Quvenzhane Wallis. Like McQueen’s earlier works, the film will focus on one man’s quest for freedom, with an added historical importance of commenting on the American slave trade. Expect this to be a serious contender come Oscar time.
FILM 2014 | 27
X-Men: Days of Future Past
X-Men: Days of Future Past UK release date 22 May Stars of past and present X-Men films collide in this wildly ambitious adaptation of one of the most famous stories from the comic books. The film represents a crossover of characters from the original X-Men trilogy and those of the prequel, X-Men: First Class (including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence). When human and mutant kind are brought to near extinction, old rivals Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellan) recruit Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to travel back in time to prevent a catastrophic event. Director Bryan Singer returns to the franchise he started back in 2000 with the original X-Men movie. He faces a daunting task trying to fit a plethora of mutant characters around the complicated time traveling narrative but, if he gets it right, it could be extraordinary.
Best of the sequels There will be a distinct feeling of déjà vu this year, as many top franchises make a return. Andrew Garfield swings in for The Amazing Spider Man 2, as the web slinger squares off against new foes Rhino and Electro (April). The boys are back for more awkward, adolescent comedy in The Inbetweeners 2 (August). Ricky Gervais teams up with Kermit the Frog for more family oriented comedy in Muppets Most Wanted (March). There will be action aplenty from Fast and Furious 7, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (all July). December will mark the end of Peter Jackson’s other J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy in The Hobbit: There and Back Again (December). And it’s the beginning of the end for another beloved series as Jennifer Lawrence returns as archery-loving hero Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (November).

Inside Llewyn Davis UK release date 24 January The Coen brothers swap the Wild West of their first film True Grit for 1960s New York with Inside Llewyn Davis. Oscar Isaac takes the title role of struggling folk singer Llewyn, attempting to make an impact in the music world while maintaining a relationship with his girlfriend, played by the ever reliable Carey Mulligan. The Coens have a gift for dark comedy, and that will be on display here as Llewyn refuses to compromise his artistic vision in a cynical industry, with Justin Timberlake and John Goodman providing supporting roles. The brothers have shown a painstaking attention to detail with the sight and sounds of the New York folk scene to capture the feel of the era. The film won the Grand Prix award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and looks set to become a worthy addition to the brothers’ impressive back catalogue.

TRIED AND TESTED Abeille Royale Expert treatment Words: Nicky Howden
W
hilst Guerlain fanatics need no introduction to the Abeille Royale collection, if you're new to the iconic French beauty brand, take note - this range is a collection of intense skincare products that are super rich, luxurious and anti-ageing. Potent, it does what it says it will do. The Guerlain brand, which dates back to 1939, is renowned for all its luxury skincare, make-up and fragrances and is precisely why the first Guerlain spa in the UK - located in the Caledonian hotel - is quite a coup for the capital's beauty scene. Deciding to put the beauty hype to the test I booked the signature Guerlain facial massage at the spa. Unfortunately when the day came, I wasn’t in the best of moods (being caught umbrellaless on a cold and wet evening can have that effect) but all that changed the moment I stepped inside serene and luxurious spa. A fragrance journey swiftly followed and before long I was slippered, robed and lounging in the relaxing room tucking into the snacks whilst my therapist (also French) prepared the room with my chosen fragrance, Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic by Guerlain.
The anti-ageing facial treatment uses the exclusive skincare products and deep cleansing therapy, but this is far more than just a facial. From gentle microdermabrasion to deep steam cleansing, a hand treatment and eyebrow shape; it’s more of an all round pampering experience and rare chance to really indulge the senses. And if that’s not enough the spa also offers a ‘touch of colour’ after the treatment so you can leave looking and feeling your best.
i-on Reader Offer The Abeille Royale Expert treatment, 1 hour 30 minutes, costs £150, but for a limited time only i-on readers can experience the treatment for £99 when they book by 31 January 2014. PLAIN SAILING
If you’re not sold on the idea of a cruise, Vivien Devlin tells i-on how she found her sea legs on a global adventure.
L
ast week I had dinner with friends in town who were visiting Edinburgh from Chicago. Last time we met was under the shadow of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The time before, 14 miles off the coast of Rio. This American couple are my special “Silversea Friends” who, like me, entrust their leisure time to Silversea cruises - travel by sea, unpacking once, to explore dream destinations around the world. I love the fine art of cruising. The fleet of intimate, ultra luxury yacht style ships offers inspirational itineraries, all inclusive hospitality and first class service. I have spent nearly a year on board, experiencing idyllic island hopping cruises around the Caribbean, Greece and Seychelles; an exotic “slow boat to China”; a 10 week circumnavigation of South America from tropical Brazil to the Patagonian fjords in chilly Chile, and an epic four month World Cruise on the Silver Whisper. Who could forget sailing into Sydney harbour,
an African wildlife safari, swimming with turtles, crossing the Equator at dawn? The carefree lifestyle is romantic, relaxing, sociable, sophisticated - an international house party of world travellers sharing the spirit of adventure. The leisurely routine preserves timeless ship life traditions: Bouillon, Captain’s midday log, pre-lunch Bloody Mary, the clack of a shuffleboard disc, afternoon tea, cocktails, glamorous formal dinners. The cuisine is exceptional, followed by music and entertainment, all wrapped up in a six star service. The Silversea’s cruise experience never fails to wow, luring us back on board time after time. I-ON HOMES
From a granary to New York style loft penthouse, James Longworth spent six months renovating his 5,000 sq ft property in Leith. Here he lets i-on inside his seriously stylish home tucked away in Timber Bush. Photos: Oli Mival

SALE “T
he property was a cluttered tribute to 1990 in need of some TLC when I first got my hands on it," explains airline captain James Longworth. “Originally converted in the late ‘80s from a granary, the building hadn’t been touched with a brush since so we stripped the floors, plastered the walls, painted everything and re-modelled the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms. I designed the interiors myself but my sister, an interior designer, helped with paint choices. Our tradesman, Gus, was amazing and did pretty much the whole thing himself. “Throughout the renovation we tried to be sympathetic to the original warehouse by using natural materials such as brick, wood and metal,” James explains. “The brick slips we used throughout the main living spaces are a timeless design which work well with the colour scheme.”
The stair case was designed in the late ‘80s by Lord Richard Rogers who also designed Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and was here when we moved in. Our floor is a floating floor on top of the original floor. The original flooring was a bit of a disaster so we thought covering it might be better. The wooden beams are part of the original design of the warehouse. They’re really big, probably around 30 feet long. We stripped them all back and oiled them; it was an awful job as there was dust everwhere.

DINING ROOM: Our dining table chairs are replicas of a Charles Eames design called Eiffel Chairs. They were only £35 each. The table is from eBay. It’s so big and heavy we actually had to get a crane to lift it in through a window. Four large planks of wood sit on actual pieces of scaffolding, I designed it myself and it cost £450 to make. I think the table is around 3 meters by 1.2 meters. The lights above the table are from Ikea. I bought the red wire separately. THE KITCHEN: The cooker is a range master by Aga. They’re not too expensive, probably about £1700. The bricks are actually tiles but made using bricks. We had them made to a custom colour.
But decorating the huge space didn’t come without its stresses. “The scale was a bit surprising and the sheer quantity of paint we needed was impressive,” James admits. “The brick slips were also a nightmare to put up on the walls. For me, mixing textures is key to any design though, especially if the palette is neutral or monotone which ours is. The contrast of the rough brick with the clinical, smooth Corian in the kitchen is a good example.” Even though James imagined the interiors himself, he does favour a number of interior designers. “Lord Richard Rogers designed the staircase in the property in the ‘80s which is stunning,” he boasts. “And the Andre Tammes’ lighting design is incredible and way ahead of its time.” On the contrary to initial thoughts, decorating and furnishing the loft didn’t break the bank. In fact there are

only a few items in the whole house that cost more than £600, which he attributes to working with small businesses. “The Cool Wood Company made us two great beds. We have tried to let small suppliers’ custom-make as much as possible in the house. It has actually worked out cheaper than using the big companies.” With such a unique space could James even select his favourite area? “That’s tough,” he says. “The 60ft long open
TOP: This room is the smaller of the two living rooms and it’s called The Flying Club. The Chesterfield is from SofaSofa and was £725 and the Dupont chairs are £675 each from Authentic Models at Achica. It has a metal side which sort of resembles part of an aircraft. My drinks cabinet was a big treat to myself as it was slightly pricey at £1,495 from Authentic Models at Achica but I love it. The floor lamp was another eBay find; it was only £120 and arrived the day after I ordered it from India, very fast delivery. The Steamer Trunk coffee table was custom made at www.daughtersoftherevolution.co.uk RIGHT: I love the top hat lights in this larger lounge area. They’re from Mr J Designs. They felt great and right for the space. I use LED bulbs to save on the pennies, but they are still effective as lights. Again my sofa is from Sofa Sofa and they were £485 each. The pillows on top are all sourced individually.
58 | PROPERTY AND INTERIORS
TOP: The bed was about £1,000 from www.thecoolwoodcompany. co.uk. I installed the LED lights underneath; they change colour with a remote control and they were only £16 from eBay. The Silver Aero metal dresser with the stool was £310 from www. scoutaboutinteriors.co.uk and my shaggy rug was about £80, another eBay find. RIGHT: This bedroom has a nautical theme which is inspired by Leith. I have a print of a painting of Leith from the 1820s, it was around £80. The oar is also from Achica and was £65. BELOW: All the lights in my bathroom change colour depending on the temperature of the water. So if you’re having a hot shower it will be red, a warm shower is green and a cold shower is blue. The bathtub was in the property when we took it over, we just re-enameled it. We decided to have the brick work effect in the bathroom too because I wanted to create an urban theme. I wanted it to feel like you were having a bath in an alleyway.
plan living space is the wow room but the Leith themed bedroom upstairs is super cosy.” Exotic treasures from his adventures as a pilot are dotted around the converted loft space and even store bought travel inspired items, “The travel trunk bar in The Flying Club, one of our living areas, is beautiful. Authentic Models make them (via Achica).” James’ inspiration lies with the raw, spacious vibes of a New York or Manchester unconventional hide away. “I love the my home, it’s a dream to live here so I’m the happiest man in the world. If I were to win the lottery though I might upgrade a few bits here and there.”

You can apparently walk betw een any two places in the Pentagon in exactly seven minutes. The striking building, the HQ of the US Department of Defence, is one of the most recognisable in the world. In case of a cataclysmic loss of power or phone outage, architects laid out the five concentric rings - spre ad over 29 acres so senior officials could respond quickly.
GREAT CHIEFTAIN O’ THE SCOTS RACE For many people around the world, haggis is just another of Scotland’s quirks along with ginger hair and Nessie. But on 25 January haggis becomes the centrepiece in the celebration of an iconic Scottish figure - Robert Burns. So as you begin your ode, chew on these Burns Night tidbits… The Burns Supper tradition was begun by a group of Robbie’s closest friends who gathered on the fifth anniversary of his death to celebrate his life and works. It continues 212 years later. The poet was something of a lowlands lothario and may have fathered as many as 14 children with four different women. Robbie was voted the Greatest Ever Scot by television viewers in a 2009 poll and Burns’ song Is there for Honest Poverty was used to open the new Scottish Parliament. He is loved around the world and of all the non religious statues on the earth, only Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus have more dedicated to them than Burns. Poignantly, Burns’ youngest son Maxwell was born on the day of the poet’s funeral. Robbie’s wife could not go to the service.
