From the Hidden Door festival (p14) to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition Tickling Jocks: Comedy Greats (p22), the capital’s got lots to offer this month. And as official lifestyle sponsors of the Edinburgh International Science Festival from 05-20 April, we’ve got a feature on some of the things we love about it on page 16. Mixing things up a little we tell the story of rap megastar Drake (p18) who plays the Hydro Arena on 15 March and give you a heads up on live music events around town on page 20. Fashion-wise we take a look at a handful of trends for spring on page 32 and we also jet off to the States on page 60 to discover the delights of Fort Lauderdale. Congratulations to last month’s winner, Kathryn Linden, who won an overnight stay at The Balmoral hotel. This month we’ve teamed up with Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative to offer one reader the chance to win a Revolution road bike worth £499. For details on how to enter turn to page 06. Until next month, enjoy i-on.

he late Francis Bacon was described by Margaret Thatcher simply as, ‘that man who paints those dreadful pictures.’ But while the Prime Minister baulked at Bacon’s bleak depictions of humanity, the rest of the country marvelled at his works. His art was the focus of two retrospectives at the Tate and was shown in Paris’s Grand Palais. His reputation was stamped on a new generation when, in November last year, his triptych of his dear friend Lucian Freud sold for a staggering $142,405,000 – the most expensive piece ever auctioned. Despite Bacon’s prowess, it was not until after his death one of his paintings - this study of the artist Anthony Zych - entered the National Collection. The chief curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Patrick Elliot, explains why he is delighted they finally got their hands on one. He said: “The directors considered a number of Bacon paintings well before this one came into the collection in 1995. I think they were looking for the ideal Bacon, and then, quite suddenly, their value rocketed and they went out of reach. “Bacon was inspired by photographs. He tended to paint at night and photos were more convenient. With a model you have to fix appointments but photos gave him independence. “He painted people as if they were bits of meat or animals, which in a way we are. He removed the niceties. It’s ironic that billionaires want them on their walls. On second thoughts, maybe it’s entirely appropriate.”

TALKING ABOUT Hidden Door

Bronwen Sleigh

Does Edinburgh really need another arts festival? Of course! We’re an arty bunch in the capital and anything that promotes the arts is a good thing. You’ll be fascinated by Hidden Door; they’re temporarily transforming the 24 disused vaults on Market Street into mini venues for the festival.

Jenny Drewitt

live music acts, visual artists, a cinema space showcasing new work from filmmakers and animators, and readings from writers and poets from all over Scotland. And a pop up Hidden Door bar and café.

Derelict vaults as venues? Sounds pretty cool, so what exactly is Hidden Door? It’s an underground arts production group in Edinburgh. They’re front runners when it comes to grassroots arts production in the city and are completely independent. It’s a not-for-profit group too, making them the quirkiest, most authentic art and community driven project out there.

But why the vaults as the chosen venue? Hidden Door wants to use them before the controversial Caltongate plans get underway, plus they’re pretty interesting. Founder and director, David Martin, says: “It’s about creating an experience that is nothing like going to a gallery or a museum. It’s about opening up a hidden part of the city to find that the stuff being made, written, or composed right under our noses is brilliant, world-class and worth celebrating.”

Sounds good, what will be inside each vault? There will be 18 vaults filled with immersive art installations including light-reactive robots, mazes and labyrinths, video projections, paintings and sculptures. There will also be

I’ll be there. When is it? It all kicks off on Friday 28 March and runs until Saturday 05 April. Events are free until 6pm and all night events will be ticketed. Check out www.hiddendoor.org for more info.

5 things we love about the Edinburgh International Science Festival 2014

1

A science feast for foodies and drinkers Heston eat your heart out. Big appetites will be satisfied at the new GastroFest mini-fest where hungry stomachs and minds will be introduced to the world of food and drink at a series of events and dinners. You can expect curiosities down the rabbit hole at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on 05 April and have a bizarre afternoon tea with ethnobotanist Dr Ian Edwards from the Royal Botanic Gardens. Explore the science of intoxication with zombie caterpillars and Opium dens at this wacky event. If you’ve overindulged on grub and booze wash away any evidence at The Hangover

Hypothesis on 13 April where you can try different hangover saviours such as yoga, hair of the dog cocktails and, obviously, a greasy bacon roll.

2

A late one for the night owls Science is even more remarkable after dark so keep the party going at the series of LateLab events being hosted around the city. LateLab: GastroLab - Slow Food will show a screening of Lifecycles by farmer Matthew Moore and break down agriculture development to allow you to witness the growing process of your food. If you’re more into your Black Jack than

EDINBURGH SCIENCE FESTIVAL 2014 | 17

carrot speed, put on your poker face and beat the dealer at LateLab: Casino Scienza on 19 April. No cheating allowed at this event but you’ll be given an insight into the science behind gambling and find out if house always wins.

3

Big questions and answers Pick the brain of a true genius, Nobel Prize winner, Professor Peter Higgs, at his talk and discussion, A Conversation with Peter Higgs: Close Up, on 09 April. He’ll be discussing his life’s work and his ground breaking particle, the Higgs Boson. He’ll be talking alongside fellow particle physicist and science writer Professor Frank Close so you can learn what the fuss really is all about. Think forward and onto this year’s referendum at Scotland Decides and examine the political questions shaping our scientific future. The psychology of voting will be explored at In Two Minds on 12 April; you’ll understand exactly how those Yes/No campaign strategies work.

4

Perfect for beauties with brains Learn the science behind your favourite lippy at Made Up? on 12 April. Brigette West of Beauty and the Geeks beauty and science blog will be teaching you how to create your own make-

up, plus you’ll look into why we think things are pretty with psychologist Dr Martin Tovee. If you’re more of a clothes horse, watch the models in action at Techno Threads and Future Fashion on 16 April. The fashion show will showcase wearable technologies and feature pieces from boundary pushing designers CuteCircuit whose futuristic designs have been worn by pop star Katy Perry.

5

Bubbles and blood for the wee ones Kids will have one magical time at the Science Festival with events ranging from messy workshops to explosive chemistry classes. Take your little ones along to the drop in experience of Bubble Magic and let them design their own bubble wand, stand inside a giant bubble, catch a dreamy smoke filled bubble and even make a nonsensical square bubble. If your kids are bigger fans of gore, they’ll learn about the science of blood, touch a real gooey heart and even make their own scabs at Blood Bar.

The Edinburgh International Science Festival 2014 runs from 05-20 April at various venues across the city. For more information visit www.sciencefestival.co.uk

Drake words ∙ David Pollock

MUSIC | 19

P

art of the appeal of Drake is that he doesn’t have the background you might expect from a rap megastar, which in turn feeds into his music, giving it a different texture and balance to many of his contemporaries. Born in Toronto in 1986, Aubrey Drake Graham is the son of an unlikely pair of parents: his dad is an African American from Memphis, Tennessee who used to drum for Jerry Lee Lewis, and his mum is a white Jewish Canadian teacher. His parents split up when he was five years old, and their lives would pull him in opposite directions. His father went to jail twice, with a young Drake witnessing one of his arrests, yet his mother raised him in an affluent part of Toronto and, although he wasn’t an outstanding pupil, it was through school that he would get his first big break. At the age of 15 and already a keen amateur actor, Drake was put forward by a friend’s talent agent father for a role in Canadian kid’s soap opera Degrassi: The Next Generation. He took the role of Jimmy Brooks, a young basketball star paralysed by a bullet, from 2001 until 2009. Despite being a familiar face among Canada’s teen audience of the time, though, Drake’s music career started pretty much from scratch. His very earliest exploits came when he was still in the acting day job, and were met with only moderate success, starting with his own independent

mixtape Room For Improvement in 2006, a collection of new music which was limited to 6,000 copies. The next year, the self released follow up Comeback Season featured a minor hit in Replacement Girl featuring Trey Songz. His third and final mixtape, 2009’s So Far Gone, would finally see Drake’s potential as an artist take off in its own right, however, with the assistance of his mentor L’il Wayne and a top three US hit single in Best I Ever Had. A trio of US and Canadian number one albums followed – 2010’s Thank Me Later, 2011’s Take Care and last year’s Grammywinning Nothing Was the Same – fuelled by collaborations with some of the biggest names in global hip-hop including Jay-Z, Timbaland, Kanye West, Rihanna, Just Blaze and The Weeknd, as well as Glasgow’s very own Hudson Mohawke on his last record. Although his success hasn’t been quite as all encompassing on this side of the pond, the distinctive combination of cocky but thoughtful raps and the vocal tone of a soul singer means that Drake doesn’t look like he’ll have to return to the acting game to make ends meet any time soon.

Drake plays the Hydro Arena, Glasgow, Saturday 15 March.

Sir Harry Lauder with Winston Churchill

Scottish Stooges Steal The Show words ∙ Fiona Pringle

M

ove over Kevin Bridges and Frankie Boyle; the forefathers of Scottish comedy are back. Residing in their immortalised splendour, key figures of 20th century Scottish comedy have been brought together in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition Tickling Jocks: Comedy Greats from Sir Harry Lauder to Billy Connolly. To toast the witty wisecracks hooting from the Highlands, the paintings, photographs, sculptures and archive material showcases the comic traditions from 1900 to 1975. Opening with a recording of Harry Lauder’s 1904 song Stop Yer Tickling Jock, the exhibition celebrates the Scottish comedians’ penchant for not taking themselves too

seriously. The caricature of Harry Lauder reveals him as a kilt wearing, haggis hunting, tight fisted Scot. Praised by Winston Churchill as ‘Scotland’s greatest ever ambassador’ Harry was no joke. He toured the world, was top of the bill at the first ever Royal Variety Performance in 1912 and, at one stage, was the highest paid performer in the world. Fast forward to the figure perching on the edge of Parkinson’s sofa in 1975, little known folk singer, Billy Connolly, took a punt with a risky joke. With the host reduced to hysterics and a suitably shocked TV audience, the welder from Glasgow sealed the deal for his comedic future. Thick Scottish twang aside he has gone on to conquer the global

comedy circuit and become an acclaimed Hollywood actor featuring in movies such as Mrs Brown, The Last Samurai and Brave. The exhibition also shows living room favourites such as Rikki Fulton, painted in 1997 by Thomas Kluge, with a wry smile playing on his lips. Rikki was known for being one half of double act Francie and Josie and an integral part of Scotch and Wry. In tribute of his character Supercop, police motorcyclists escorted his funeral cortege upon his death in 2004. Also hanging with pride is much loved actor and the master of observational comedy, Greenock’s own Chic Murray. The Derek Gray watercolour caricature shows Chic sporting his trademark Scotch bunnet and smile. Over the course of 70 years the nature of comedy performance had many guises. Tickling Jock charts the history of these rich traditions as well as revealing little known facts, showing Lulu as a TV comedy star and acknowledging opera singer Kenneth McKellar’s contributions to Monty Python. The exhibition shines a spotlight on entertainers who generated laughter as a constant backdrop to the changes of the modern world and laid the foundations for an even riskier brand of daring Scottish comedy on show today. Runs until 25 May 2014 at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1 Queen St, EH2 1JD, Tel: 0131 624 6200.

MY I-ON EDINBURGH Vicki Lewis

Retail operations manager Vicki Lewis has a slightly unusual office onboard The Royal Yacht Britannia, rated Scotland’s Best Visitor Attraction by VisitScotland. Here she shares her thoughts on the city with i-on. What gives Edinburgh its edge? It’s a beautiful city with lots of green spaces. Your preferred areas in Edinburgh? I love the mini ‘villages’ within Edinburgh. From Stockbridge to Bruntsfield and Leith, everything is on your doorstep. The city’s best kept secret? Sambuca restaurant in Causewayside – I’ve been going regularly for years. The best place to go on a Sunday? The Farmers’ Market in Stockbridge for its local and artisan producers.

Around the city where you’ll find me: Favourite shop: Sarah Dallas Living. For a pamper session: Womankind Beauty in Stockbridge. Enjoying a coffee: Café Plum.

DESIGN

Namon Gaston photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Mastering his trade in rural Scotland as a cabinet maker, furniture designer Namon Gaston’s contemporary, Danish inspired pieces have reached international recognition since he first launched his Edinburgh studio in 2005. The 36-year-old designer creates bespoke designs and is one of the few, carefully chosen designers to be stocked in the Nordic infused store, Soren Furniture, in Morningside. Whose style do you admire? In terms of furniture design, the two main designers I admire are midcentury masters, Borge Mogensen and Hans J Wegner. They were at the forefront of practical design for the masses. If money was no object, how would you furnish a home? I would invest in some classic Danish designs and some midcentury antiques that are out of production. The interior I’ve been most impressed with is… probably Timberyard restaurant on Lady Lawson Street. My top interiors tip is… think of your furnishings as a collection and only buy things that add to it.

28 | I-ON PEOPLE

DRINK Chris Inglis photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As head bartender at Sygn Bar & Kitchen in the west end, 21-year-old Chris Inglis has his work cut out for him creating cocktails, serving food during busy lunch and dinner services and preparing homemade ingredients to help make their drinks so unique. What’s the most popular drink at Sygn? Our barrel aged Live Zombie is a big hit. It’s very boozy and served in a Tiki mug with a whole lot of fruit to garnish. It tastes superb. You’re off work, where do you like to go out in Edinburgh? For an after work pint The Black Cat on Rose Street is good. They have a huge selection of whisky, some interesting beers and often live folk music which creates a nice atmosphere. What’s your favourite drink? It changes with the weather but right now I’m partial to a classic Bacardi Daiquiri made with Bacardi Superior, lime and sugar. Nice and simple and extremely session-able. Where’s best for a date night in the city? The Bon Vivant is right up there - great drinks, food and ambience. Chaophraya on Castle Street is good too.

30 | I-ON FAMILIES

BEING MUM

by Louise Dickins, partner at Dickins Edinburgh short term letting. The family unit: Louise, husband Simon, Archie, 3, and Geordie, 1.

BEING MUM | 31

L

ife has changed completely since becoming a mum. I had my boys at 42 and 44 and we feel so lucky to have them. I really don’t miss much about my old life, I’ve enjoyed plenty of good times so don’t mind lots of nights at home. Being a parent gives life a wonderful balance. I developed gestational diabetes during both pregnancies so that involved lots of hospital check-ups and an amazing level of care from the team at Simpson’s Royal Infirmary. Both boys ended up being born by C-section. I took seven months maternity leave each time thanks to the brilliant girls in my office and spent the time getting obsessed with The Real Housewives of Beverley Hills and other daytime TV. ITV2 is a guilty pleasure. I’m now back at work four days a week and find even a full on day in the office is often a lot easier than a day at home with toddlers. The biggest surprise about becoming a parent is that I have the energy for it. Perhaps the hardest thing is trying to keep your cool in the challenging moments but being a mum means everything to me and has changed the way I think about pretty much everything in life.

We love the National Mu seum of Scotland, Waverley Station (Archie loves trains) Commonwealth Pool and Dynamic Earth soft play. When it comes to toys Geordie loves anything that Archie is playing wit h. We are trying to learn to share at the mo ment. It’s not easy. I can’t recommend eno ugh our Stokke equipment: cot, highcha irs and pram/pushchair. They are brilliantly des igned. The website you’ll alw ays find me on is Pinterest. I’m obsessed. The shop you’ll always find me in is John Lew is. It’s our local shop and has everything.

MONOCHROME

In contrast to the season’s rainbow of sugary shades, the classic black and white combo looks clean, crisp and surprisingly fresh. The key here is to wear an equal smattering of both colours to ensure neither dominates.

FLORAL FANTASY Big, bold and blooming all over the high street, florals are the print of the season. Be a little subversive and opt for lace up boots or slouchy sportswear inspired tops in floral prints rather than predictable pretty dresses.

PASTELS

Debenhams

Pale is most definitely interesting this season especially when pastels are worn head to toe. Add some edge to this sweetest of trends by incorporating some pastel PVC or leather into your look.

SPORTS LUXE

Relaxed, comfortable, with just a touch of luxury – think metallic plimsolls, jewel shades and satin bombers – the most important thing to remember with this sportswear inspired trend is that you want to look like you’re visiting the Commonwealth Games, not competing in them.

hinning hair is a major concern for anyone and unfortunately for me, nine months after having my beautiful baby daughter, she may be thriving but the same couldn’t be said for my hair. The Nixon dermabrasion treatment at Cheynes is described as a facial for the scalp and is specifically designed to help regenerate the scalp skin surface and reduce hair loss caused by breakage and environmental factors. The really appealing bit for me, however, was the Nioxin promise of thicker, fuller looking hair in 30 days. How could I resist? The treatment started with a scalp assessment to determine the correct level of treatment for your needs, which, admittedly, felt a bit strange as your scalp is magnified onto a computer screen. My hair was then washed and the treatment applied. Its purpose is to remove build-up and excess oils from around the hair follicles to help restore the scalp to its optimum condition, finishing off with a blow dry and a relaxing head massage. Before leaving the salon with a three step trial kit to continue at home, we checked my scalp on screen again and it did look better already. I am now halfway through the 30 day course and I definitely can see and feel an improvement to my hair. It isn’t as limp and it’s slowly starting to feel a bit fuller. Full marks from me. The Nioxin scalp renew dermabrasion treatment is available at Cheynes citywide, www.cheyneshairdressing.com

ohnny Depp and Steven Spielberg dock their multi million pound boats here, while the Kardashians like to relax in one of the many stylish bars and restaurants. Featuring 23 miles of sun drenched beaches, 300 miles of winding waterways, fashion boutiques and gourmet eateries galore, Fort Lauderdale in Florida is fast becoming the hide away destination for the rich and famous. Built on a series of canals lined with some of the most expensive waterfront mansions in the US, Fort Lauderdale is just 30 minutes away from the hedonistic South Beach Miami and full of mega yachts and some of the most luxurious hotels in the Florida state. One such hotel is the B Ocean, a super stylish hotel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Ideally located on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, the luxury award-winning hotel boasts an acclaimed sushi bar, Miami-inspired cocktail bars and plush bedrooms with floor to ceiling windows. While it’s hard to drag yourself away from the lure of B Ocean and the white sandy beach across the road, Fort

Lauderdale just begs to be explored. Maximise your time here by taking the water taxi which costs just $20 per day for unlimited travel and take in the sights and landmarks including the jaw dropping mansions on Millionaires Row. Our favourite route was ‘Inland’ to the New River, downtown Fort Lauderdale and the quaint Las Olas area. And for some holiday fun on land, you cannot beat a sedgeway tour around the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park which costs $50 for half an hour. Our dining destinations centred in the chic area of La Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Get there early and make the most of cocktail hour and people watching before indulging in some of the freshest, affordable, seafood around from culinary hotspots including Voodka and The Grateful Palate. Fort Lauderdale is also the ideal base from which to explore the Everglades and embark on the ultimate American adventure; the 150 mile road trip to the Florida Keys. Which is precisely what we did. Before we hit the

infamous Route One, we stopped off at Billie Swamp Safari, an Indian reservation with over 2,200 acres of untamed Florida Everglades. The unforgettable Airboat Trail through cypress domes allowed us to see alligators, turtles, birds and racoons up close and in their natural environment, whilst the Swampy Buggy Eco Tour splashed through the swamp and exotic wildlife including water buffalo, ostriches and wild pigs. At $49.95 for a day pass and unlimited Air Boat rides, it was worth every penny. Leaving the green flats of the Everglades, the three hour drive to Key West is arguably the ultimate great American road trip that whisks you through a series of islets that provides a sensory overload. The views are stunning. If you have time, stop off at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to enjoy a boat tour to the park’s coral reef system. We stayed at the luxury Westin Key Resort & Marina which is located in the heart of the Old Town, on the waterfront, and just around the corner from the famed Duval Street. THINGS REALLY ARE LOOKING UP

i-on speaks to property expert, Richard Loudon of Simpson & Marwick, for advice on the property market in 2014.

T

he Edinburgh property market has had an exciting start to the year with far more activity than in the last few years and a renewed appetite for buyers to buy. The media are reporting more positive economic news which in turn boosts confidence and this is reflected in the moving property market. With rental costs rising, interest rates appearing to remain at an all time low and banks being a bit more helpful with funding, the first time buyer market has awoken providing the push at the bottom of the market that has been needed to help the upper tiers. When it comes to selling it is still all about quality. The best properties in any market sector are now very sought after, resulting in closing dates regularly creating offers in excess of Home Report value. Our advice to clients is to start at a competitive ‘offers over’ price to create interest. Over-pricing is still a dangerous tactic which can result in a property stagnating on the market. In the prime property market, in which Simpson & Marwick are most active, the story is very similar. The

best properties are creating competition and premium prices above Home Report value, whilst properties that are “somewhat compromised” struggle to achieve Home Report value. The quality of presentation and marketing is still paramount and saving a few pounds on the marketing exercise and pro-active advice is a false economy. Our new City Centre property shop in Howe Street has shown very encouraging footfall during its first week. Buyers are keen to find properties as soon as they come to the market, anticipating serious competition for the best properties akin to pre-recession days. My advice would be to market your property sooner rather than later to take advantage of the current shortage in supply of quality properties.

occa Grill has garnered a sought after reputation in St Andrews and now the residents of Edinburgh have a chance to try its culinary delights thanks to the opening of a second eatery in the city centre. The brainchild of award-winning restaurateurs Susan and Adrian Pieraccini, the Rocca Grill in St Andrews, which boasts three coveted AA Rosettes, overlooks the iconic 18th fairway of the Old Course. Edinburgh’s Rocca has an equally iconic setting within the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, just steps away from the Scottish Parliament and Palace of Holyrood House. Serving Scottish cuisine with an Italian twist, the contemporary brasserie is perfect for relaxed and stylish

dining. The rich colours in the restaurant and luxe soft furnishings exude comfort and warmth whilst the large silver pendant light fittings add a modern touch. Visiting on a cold Thursday evening, we were ushered inside to the welcoming warmth and a comfortable corner table. I was soon sipping a glass of Italian Merlot, £4.50 (£17.95 for a bottle), while perusing the ample but succinct menu. Split into helpful sections to guide you, diners can choose from all day brunch, pasta, fish, meat and the grill, as well as tasty starters and sides. My inner child led me to opt for the ‘Pizzetta’ topped with buffalo mozzarella, tomato and fine cuts of prosciutto, £4.95 (when else can you get away with having a mini pizza for

starters?), while my dinner date chose the heritage beetroot with soft goats cheese and basil dressing, £7.95. The main event was a tougher choice. Rocca’s Italian side won me over and I picked the handrolled pappardelle with beef and Barolo ragu, £12.50. A generous portion, the pasta was the perfect thickness and the beef satisfyingly rich but light. My date chose from the grill and ordered the rare breed pork chop, £13.75, served with perfectly chunky hand cut chips. The dessert menu then caught our eye but alas, filling Scottish/Italian food meant there was only room for one to share - the limoncello polenta cake, £6.50. A good choice and refreshing end to a hearty meal. Offering sophisticated dining in relaxed surroundings with first class service, Rocca Holyrood is a welcome addition to the capital’s dining scene. he quirky independents, chilled out bars and weekly market in Stockbridge all add to the general village vibe of the area. But, in recent years, there’s been even more to shout about with Michelin starred chef Tom Kitchin opening his brasserie, The Scran & Scallie, and the Bon Vivant branching out to open their second venture. The much missed Raeburn Hotel is also due to open again later this month. Another newbie on the foodie front is Rollo, an intimate wine bar on Raeburn Place offering a menu of tapas inspired small plates, bites and bowls made for sampling and sharing. Small but perfectly formed, it’s a far cry from the old Chinese takeaway that used to occupy the premises – a credit to architect George Rollo who owns the family venture together with wife and sculptor, Allison, and daughter and fashion designer, Ailsa. Rollo is welcoming and atmospheric with its aubergine and grey coloured interiors, wine bottles lining the walls,

sculptures and attention to detail in everything from the candle holders to statement cushions and crockery, all a clear sign of Ailsa’s flair for fashion and design. Serving up locally sourced, quality produce with a large sprinkle of personality and ambience, Rollo isn’t just about the setting or friendly service - although it does the latter very well. It specialises in dishes from across the globe and from delicious marinated olives to smoked salmon pate, Thai green curry and beautifully fresh sea bass in tomatoes, olives, herbs and shallots, the food is tasty and well executed. Rollo is a great addition to the dining scene in Stockbridge and a fab place for grown-ups looking to enjoy fine wine, good company and food. We’re hoping for big things from this neighbourhood haunt. Rollo, 108 Raeburn Pl, EH4 1HH, Tel: 0131 332 1232, www.facebook.com/barrolloedinburgh/timeline

CHEERS TO THE EMERALD ISLE St Patrick’s day on 17 March is one of the most popular celebrations in the world, but how much do you really know about Paddy? Despite its boozy reputation, Irish law declared St Patrick’s a day of religious observance and outlawed alcohol up until 1970. Then it was reclassified as national holiday, letting the Guinness flow freely again. On an average day, 5.5 million pints of the black stuff are sold but on the 17th that rockets to a remarkable 13 million pints worldwide. In America, more than 40 tons of green dye are poured into the Chicago River as part of the celebrations.

Our Favourite Find This month’s find is a treasure trove of the coolest and quirkiest products imaginable. Firebox, run by a team of pop culture aficionados with their tongues firmly pressed into their cheeks, has catalogue featuring (deep breath) Blade Runner whisky glasses, Tetris stackable lamps, Patrick Bateman business cards, Breaking Bad crystal meth bath salts, the world’s largest Snickers bar and a Ryan Gosling colouring-in book. Phew! Check it out online at www.firebox.com

However Paddy’s original colour was blue and the Irish Guards regiment still sport a blue plume in their bearskins. The emphasis on green is linked to Irish independence. According to legend, on the day of judgement while Christ judges all other people, St Patrick will judge the Irish. The ‘snakes’ Patrick drove out of Ireland are now understood to have been pagans, rather than actual reptiles. He used the three leaf clover to explain the Christian holy trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Finally, the odds of finding a four leaf clover are nearly one in 10,000.
