If you missed the latest series of Love Island (seriously, where were you?), you might not have heard of the sassy Scottish singer who won the show but we’re sure you will soon. It wasn’t just Finn who fell in love with the West Lothian lass; Paige won the hearts of the nation – ours included – and we can’t wait for her to shirk the ‘Lewis Capaldi’s ex’ label and prove her own voice is just as worthy of a listen.

T
he latest powerful page-turner from the bad boy of Scottish fiction is as wonderfully dark and vicious as his infamous first novel Kill Your Friends. Set in Trump’s America, it follows retired newspaper editor Frank Brill who, after receiving a terminal diagnosis, sets about wreaking revenge on a list of enemies. Brill’s f*ck it list is a kind of dark spin on the a more traditional list of things to do before you die – but what would be on Niven’s own final to-do list? Let’s ask him… You’re facing certain death – what’s on your bucket list? Oh God. I’m not much for all the ‘swimming with dolphins’ crap. There’s a few restaurants and golf courses I’d like to tick off. But, to be honest, I’m such a terrible coward who is utterly petrified of death that if I knew I was dying I’d probably end up holed up in a room with a case of whisky until the bitter end. It’s a bit like the concept of death row meals. ‘What would your perfect last meal be?’ Yeah, you know what? I’m scared witless. I’ll stick with the scotch, thanks. And what about your f*ck it list anyone you think deserves to get their comeuppance? How long have you got? Our Prime Minister and his entire cabinet of sh*ts. Trump and pretty much everyone serving in his administration at this point. Farage, Arron Banks, Andy Wigmore, Julia Hartley Brewer, Dominic Cummings. All the Brexit turds basically. What books should everyone read before they die (aside from yours!)? All of Jane Austen, all of Nabokov, all of John Updike. That’ll keep you going for a while.
and The Amateurs) and one pretty bad movie (Cat Run). I was 35 when I started and terrified that I’d left it all too late. In a way, I’m still running. Is writing something you’d always enjoyed growing up in Irvine? It was reading more than writing back then. Vonnegut’s Catch 22 was the first novel I remember reading for pleasure, back when I was 16. I was amazed that a book could make you fall about laughing, in the same way that a movie or a TV show could. The writing came later, in my early 20s, when I made several attempts to start a novel. All doomed. I had the same way of looking at the world but I just didn’t have the self-discipline you need to become a novelist until my 30s. It can be frustrating, waiting for certain aspects of your personality to catch up with the others. But, we got there in the end. You’ve lived down South for many years now – is there anything you miss about living in Scotland? I don’t have to miss it too much. My Mum’s still in Ayrshire, and I have lots of friends in Glasgow, so I’m back pretty regularly and I feel that Scotland is still a big part of my life and my identity. I’m just waiting until the full, hard Brexit comes down and everyone starts eating dogs and shooting at each other down here, followed by an independent Scotland becoming part of the EU. Then I can easily sell the move back to Glasgow to my partner and children... The F*ck-It List by John Niven is published by William Heinemann on 26 March.
You started writing in 2002 after spending the ’90s working in the music industry – how did you make the move? Feverishly. I pretty much chained myself to the desk from 9 to 5 six days a week for five years. If you add all that time up, you hit Malcolm Gladwell’s mythical 10,000 hours. That period produced three pretty good novels (Music from Big Pink, Kill Your Friends

“S
ingle-breasted blazers have been a failsafe choice for men for decades but Spring brings a new perspective on the wardrobe staple with statement cuts and colours, and a return to vogue of the double-breasted blazer. It’s an item I’m a huge fan of, whether in classic black or in linen and unstructured. The lightweight, more relaxed style is ideal when the weather begins to get a little warmer and it sits nicely on the frame too. Bold colours always stand out nicely but personally, I would break it up with a darker or lighter coloured pair of trousers or chinos.” Follow Peter on Instagram @thegentlemanselect

The Scottish designer on strong women, effortless style and making her Netflix debut STARTING OUT For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a fashion designer. My gran taught me how to sew when I was five years old. After leaving school, I went to Dundee College, then Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design to study Textile Design. INSPRIATION I’ve always been inspired by iconic, strong women and aim to create garments that make women look and feel great. SIGNATURE STYLE I would say it’s feminine with an edge. WARDROBE MUST-HAVE I love my own brand’s H.S overshirts. They’re so versatile, I can wear them every day and in the evening too. On the rare occasions I go out, I just swap my converse for a pair of heels and it still looks cool and chic. STYLE ICONS I’ve loved Debbie Harry for as long as I can remember. My mum loved her too and so do all my sisters. She is just effortlessly cool. Looking amazing and feminine but still having an edge is such a great look. I also love Danish influencer and stylist Pernille Teisbaek and Italian designer Gilda Ambrosio. I’ll have both of their wardrobes, please.

SIX WAYS WITH CANE
Edinburgh-based blogger Liz Engelsen on the biggest interiors trend of the moment
40
INTERIORS
C
ane furniture is red hot. You’ll have seen it everywhere from Instagram and Pinterest to your favourite interiors magazines and high street stores. Everyone is jumping on this trend and we don’t blame them. Sometimes called rattan and even, shhh, wicker, and previously seen mainly on your parents neglected outdoor furniture, cane has reinvented itself as a cool, sophisticated and contemporary new guy on the block that we are all lusting after. Why now? It could be because it’s so durable and easy to maintain or perhaps it’s because it’s a natural material; totally in tune with the movement to use more sustainable materials at home. From an aesthetic point of view, it’s all about texture. The light, airy, criss-cross pattern brings a new dimension to furniture which is traditionally solid and weighty. It’s also a wonderfully versatile material; the perfect partner to luxe velvet, understated with natural ash wood, bold when curved and a total scorcher when paired with brass details. Whether your style is eclectic and boho, Scandi and minimalist, glam and maximalist, there is a piece of carefully crafted cane furniture you’ll love. The question is, will you keep it subtle or go big? Here’s a few ideas…
1. Take it to the bedroom
From headboards and bedside tables to cabinets and seating, cane in the bedroom just feels right, creating a soft, soothing vibe, perfect to send you off to sleep. Anthropologie’s cane and velvet bed, £1,398 (pictured left), is an elegant spot to rest your head at night; Maisons du Monde has an acacia and mango wood bedside table, £215.50, which offers a pleasing contrast between the light and dark woods. But my must-buy has to be the low lounge chair from H&M Home, £199.99, the perfect place to toss your robe.
41
INTERIORS
2. Luxe up your lounge
If calm zen isn’t your vibe, fear not. Cane can totally bring the edgy elegance and sophisticated glam vibes too. With a nod to mid-century and art deco, these beauties are playing up the mysterious and seductive qualities of cane. HK Living’s arched room divider £390, from Folk Interiors, will hide any sinful corners of your room while the 101CPH Mako Bar, £650 from Catalog Interiors, is super stylish with its shiny brass legs.
3. Embrace the chair
The chair is perhaps where cane really shines in all its various shapes, sizes and styles. From vintage to modern, these statement seats will add an interesting twist to your dining or living space. I challenge you not to fall in love with the curves of the petal-shaped armchair, £995 from Soho House Retail; or the solid simplicity of Graham & Green’s ‘50s inspired armchair, £325. While the John Lewis Accent armchair, £949, offers comfort and colour which can be lacking in some cane pieces, offering a remarkable array of 215 fabrics you can choose from.

4. Switch your lights
Do you design your room around your lighting or do you consider lighting a finishing touch to complete the room? These inspiring pieces might make you rethink your approach. Nkuku has a cute pair of table lamps perfect for your bedside tables, from £120 each; or if you’re lighting from above, there’s the Dolkie cane pendant, £95 from La Redoute, or Ikea’s ubiquitous Sinnerlig woven bamboo pendant, just £40.
5. Make a grand entrance
Set a stylish vibe from the first step into your home with a touch of cane in the hallway. Every entry deserves a stylish bench to perch when slipping shoes off at the end of a long day and they don’t get much more stylish than HK Living’s woven black bench €495 from Fleux. Also essential is a pretty place to toss your phone and keys like H&M Home’s neat wall cabinet, £139.99; or for boots, bags and hats, invest in some roomier storage like Rockett St George’s Sungkai woven cabinet, £995.

6. Get creative
If you fancy yourself as a bit crafty, there are some inspiring Ikea hacks out there using woven cane. For the 40th anniversary of Ikea’s Billy bookcase, interior designer Kath of House of Hawkes turned it into an elegant statement piece with the addition of some woven doors; Jules of must-follow Instagram account @ikeahackersofficial keeps it simple with an easy as 1-2-3 headboard made from an Ikea Ivar shelving support and some pre-woven cane; while Justin of renovation account @design_at_nineteen pimped an Ikea chest of drawers with a lick of paint and some cane webbing. ASK THE EXPERT
How do I introduce colour and texture while keeping things sophisticated? JO AYNSLEY OF JEFFREYS INTERIORS SHARES HER TOP TIPS ON BEING CLASSY WITH COLOUR
48
INTERIORS
It is possible to combine colour, pattern, and texture for a look that’s playful and detailed but still pulled together and elegant – one great place to start is with wallpaper. In our showroom (pictured left), we’ve chosen a wallpaper called Serenity by Philip Jeffries. It’s bold in its detail, but soft and subtle at the same time. By covering just two walls in this paper, the look isn’t overpowering. Tom Faulkner Papillon drinks trolley, £4,020
Balance is also important when choosing furniture and accessories. It’s a good idea to keep some elements very tonal using soft shades of grey and beige, while not shying away from contrasting colour and pattern elsewhere. For example, we’ve chosen a sofa upholstered in Lapura Velvet in the shade ‘Mole’ by GP&J Baker and glass lamps by Heathfield in the Smoke colourway alongside chairs in a bright teal. With cushions, we have used a selection of warm, rich velvets in blues from Elitis, with a contrasting paisley pattern by De le Cuona on the sofa. Don’t be afraid to choose some bold statement pieces. Investing in truly unique pieces of furniture that reflect your personality is a decision you’ll never regret. I’m a huge fan of the vibrant furniture in Tom Faulkner’s Papillon collection. The pieces have been sculpted and powder coated in bright colours inspired by butterflies while the dichromic glass they’re topped with throws colourful light all around the room. It truly has to be seen in person to be appreciated. If you like entertaining, the Papillon drinks trolley is perfect for you - colourful, eye-catching and guaranteed to get a crowd talking. Try to limit your colour palette to five colours and introduce it in different ratios throughout a room with paint/wallpaper, fabrics/ curtains, or artwork and accessories. Even pared back looks benefit from a splash of colour. Take inspiration from your surroundings and don’t be afraid of your own creativity in blending styles.
Pierre sideboard by Charlotte James Furniture, £2,999
GET THE LOOK... Cushions from £88, by Elitis and De Le Cuona
Pay attention to detail. It’s the small things that elevate a scheme – the velvet cushions here have a slim metallic contrast piping which makes them look more tailored and high end. Instead of a plain white card lampshade, we’ve opted for a silk shade with a soft, golden interior to give a warm glow. Finally, by specifying really lovely hardware (such as handles on cabinetry) you can boost the aesthetic and make things look much more expensive than they are. MANCHESTER Nicky Murdoch finds the ultimate city centre hotel

TRAVEL
R
enowned for its music scene, football teams, shopping, clubs, top restaurants and bars, Manchester is a vibrant and lively city, bursting with character. It’s also constantly evolving; from the ever-changing skyline to the cool redevelopment of old buildings and creation of new neighbourhoods. The last time I visited Manchester was for a girls’ weekend. We partied hard in the Northern Quarter, drank countless cocktails and shopped until we dropped. It was fun and it was messy. This time, with husband in tow, it would be different. We were in town for one night only and wanted a grown-up night away in a hotel that would combine luxury, style and a central location - but avoid being too close to all the bright lights. Dakota Manchester on Ducie Street is the newest boutique hotel in the Dakota portfolio and it offers just that. A few minutes’ walk from Manchester Piccadilly Station, it’s in the city centre yet it’s quiet and feels slightly off the beaten track. From first impressions, the contemporary black exterior and tinted windows are imposing, the supercars parked at the hotel entrance impressive and the treelined entrance feels grand. But the hotel also seems refreshingly understated, quietly going about its business with the outside world being none the wiser to what lies behind its dark facade. Contrasting with the stark exterior, inside there are sumptuous furnishings, funky art, scented candles and open fires. It’s atmospheric, sophisticated and seriously cool. Our classic king boutique style room with its beautiful décor, luxurious bed linen and the most divine bathroom made us want to stay forever. Bags unpacked, we finally tore ourselves away from the room to sample the impressive bar, complete with dark moody lighting, velvet sofas and leather armchairs. We fell in love with the place so much that we cancelled our dinner reservations to eat in the hotel instead. Hotel restaurants can be a hit or miss but the Dakota Grill Manchester is a cut above, offering delicious seasonal produce, beautifully cooked steak and a prix fixe menu for just £20 for two courses. It feels special and exclusive and everything is delicious. Best of all, we didn’t have to step outside. A truly first class experience from start to finish, we’re already planning our return visit. Dakota Manchester, 29 Ducie St, Manchester, M1 2JL, 016 1 674 9180, www.dakotahotels.co.uk/manchester. Room rates from £120. Follow @dakotahotel_MCR on Instagram.

Three concealers to try now…
I started my own home hair colour brand because… after colouring hair for nearly 30 years, I wanted to offer my insight and skills to a much wider audience than I ever could in my Atelier in London. I wanted to break down barriers, offer online consultations and create the best product available in the home hair colour category.

1. Erborian BB CRAYON is a new multi-purpose skincare stick that nourishes and smooths skin texture. Use all over, as a concealer or to contour on-the-go. Available in four shades, £23.
The treatment most people need but don’t get regularly enough is… a deep condition. My Josh Wood Colour Everything Mask treatment is a conditioning and hydrating product which makes hair super shiny.
2. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk MultiPurpose Glow Concealer, £34.50, is available in 20 shades and boasts an ultra-fine yet intensely pigmented formula infused with pearls. It gives great coverage as well as radiant, hydrated skin. On counter this month. 3. Huda Beauty Overachiever Concealer is a creamy, high coverage formula infused with green tea. We love the cool tip which soothes and de-puffs tired eyes and its luminousmatte finish. Available in 20 shades. £24 at Harvey Nichols Edinburgh.
My top beauty tip is… If you colour grey hair, keep on top of regrowth. I have developed several forms of root concealer which are perfect for in-between salon appointments.

IT’S INCREDIBLE TO SEE THE WORK WE ARE DOING CHANGING THE WAY THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY AND RETAILERS THINK”
THE NEW WAY TO BUY BEAUTY i-on meets Jo Chidley, the Scottish beauty entrepreneur shaking up the industry
56
BEAUTY
W
hen Jo Chidley opened the doors to the original Beauty Kitchen shop in Glasgow in 2014, she had one mission: to create the most effective, natural and sustainable beauty products in the world; and to make them available to everyone. Now, with the launch of a Beauty Kitchen refill station in high street stores across the country, it seems her dream could become a reality. We caught up with the former scientist to hear more about the beauty brand everyone’s talking about. Where did your interest in sustainable beauty come from? I’ve always had a passion for natural beauty which stems from my background in chemistry, but also my interest in botany and beekeeping. For years, I searched for beauty products that were completely natural, sustainable and effective but it proved difficult so I took matters into my own hands. Our main aim is to make sustainable beauty an easy and accessible option for everyone so that this eventually becomes the norm. What makes your products unique? They are all cruelty free, completely natural and sustainable. Most current sustainable and so called ‘zerowaste’ products only consider the packaging; the product inside may still contain ingredients such as microplastic that pollute the planet. Beauty Kitchen products factor in packaging, ingredients and how we can make the process of buying beauty products a circular and sustainable choice.
from this original idea and gives consumers what they want with zero waste. So how does it work? Customers will be able to pick up a Beauty Kitchen aluminium bottle, choose from a selection of premium quality organic, vegan, microplastic free, natural, Leaping Bunny certified products from as little as £5 for 500ml and return again and again with the same packaging. The initial range for the stations will include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash and a facial cleanser. When and where will we find the refill stations? We plan to roll out 1000 of our Beauty Kitchen refill stations over the next two years in the UK with the objective to save over 100 million single use plastic bottles. Glasgow will be first with the rest of the cities to follow but we are also focussing on phasing the machines into zero-waste, grocery and retail stores in small towns and market towns as well as university campuses, train stations, garden centres, hair and beauty salons and even major office complexes. And we won’t stop there; we have so many more plans so we can make this world full of gorgeous products that don’t create waste. Be the first to hear news of the refill machines locations by following @beautykitchen on Instagram or joining the Sustainable Beauty Club at www.beautykitchen.co.uk. Members will also receive 15 per cent off their next orders.
Has the refill station been a labour of love? It has been the ultimate labour of love. It’s quite clear that consumers want to switch to a more sustainable lifestyle and are open to more conscious ways of living for the sake of the planet… but how can we expect change when retail beauty shelves and our bathrooms are still full of single use plastic bottles and ‘refill pouches’ aren’t recyclable? Beauty Kitchen’s original store was set out to teach people how to make their own products and then come back to refill with those recipes (we still do this for our cult followers here in Glasgow). The refill station has evolved

WHERE I-ON’S BEEN EATING THIS MONTH
SOUTHSIDE SCRAN Nicky Murdoch enjoys some next-level food at Tom Kitchin’s Bruntsfield bistro
S
ince opening its doors in 2018, this neighbourhood bistro has done a fine job keeping the locals happy. And it’s easy to see why - the sophisticated culinary hang-out combines the best of Scotland’s produce with French bistro-style cuisine and relaxed but flawless service. But, of course, the owner, Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin, has had a bit of practice in getting his winning formula just right. From the The Kitchin in Leith to The Scran & Scallie in Stockbridge and his first pub with rooms, The Bonnie Badger in Gullane, Kitchin and his award-winning team operate like a well-oiled machine. And they sure know how to decorate too. Southside’s interior has a definite nod to traditional French bistros. Dark green walls, brass accents, rustic wooden floors and mood lighting create a warm, inviting dining room, and despite being open plan, clever screens and banquettes ensure things still feel intimate. Of course, the biggest draw is the food. The well-curated menu offers everything from Loch Fyne oysters to a delicious Highland wagyu beef tartare, melba toast, £14. Top crowd pleasers include battered North Sea haddock and tartare sauce, £15.50, or grass-fed Highland wagyu burger with red onion relish, Isle of Mull cheddar and fries, £16. But don’t expect your average pub grub - this is next level. The kitchen pride themselves on using only the freshest, local, seasonal produce, so you can expect daily cuts of meat, fish and specially selected vegetables.

On our visit, we both opted for the fish of the day, £25, which was the most flavoursome plate of plaice I’ve ever enjoyed. We teamed this with three sides, £11 (or £4 each): moreish fondant potatoes, confit garlic & spring onions; mixed rôtisserie vegetables from the open rotisserie grill in the dining room; and the most delicious, intensely cheesy macaroni
cheese. What a feast. For dessert, there was sublime chocolate tart, £8.50; rich and moist with perfectly baked pastry. If I wasn’t so impressed by everything else, I’d return for the tart alone. Southside Scran, 14 - 17 Bruntsfield Pl, Edinburgh, EH10 4HN, 0131 342 3333, www.southsidescran.com

Introducing the faces behind our favourite local foods WHO Hamish Martin, owner of Edinburgh’s Secret Herb Garden and The Old Curiosity Gin. WHAT My wife and I created the Secret Herb Garden in 2014 – a green space where people can come and relax with nature, explore the beautiful 7.5 acre garden, choose from over 600 herbs and enjoy great food in our cafe. In 2017, we converted our barn into a distillery and set to work creating our all natural, floral, colourchanging gins. We produce four core styles; Apothecary Rose, Lavender and Echinacea, Pink Elderflower and Jasmine, and a Lemon Verbena.

WHY My wife is passionate about all things vintage and longed to have a café and I just wanted to spend the rest of my life with herbs – we had no idea where or how this was going to come together but we shared a desire to create something special and unique. I happened to stumble across this huge derelict greenhouse and land in 2012 and one thing led to another. We spent the next three years living in a static caravan with four kids and five dogs as we set to work to open the doors of The Secret Herb Garden. We eventually got planning permission to build a home on site which is where we all live. It has been a roller-coaster! HOW We have faced so many challenges, from the planning permission to raising money to creating the distillery. We grow all our base botanics for the gin, the flowers
for the colours and the fresh plants for the flavour. We use no chemicals, colourings, flavours or sugar – just nature distilled. STAYING CURRENT Any young business continually changes and develops. We are now making the distillate for M&S Non-Alcoholic Gin and have started to make bespoke gin for prestigious clients such as The Balmoral Hotel - ‘Baile Mhoireil’ (Gaelic for Majestic Dwelling) is a fantastic refreshing gin with hints of citrus notes that you’ll find in the hotel’s bars. SIGNATURE DISH Does a Secret Garden Gin, tonic, ice and a flower petal garnish count? FRIDGE FAVOURITES I love simple foods – great, quality ingredients cooked simply. FOODIE SHOPS I have an issue with crowded high streets or mall-like places – too busy for me. My favourite food shopping is buying the seeds for young sapling trees to grow my own veg, fruit and herbs. EATING OUT We rarely go out, having five kids, dogs and working seven days a week but if we can get a babysitter, we love a meal for two at The Canny Man’s in Morningside. www.oldcuriosity.co.uk

BEST BITS
Fashion shopping: I’m trying to be a lot more sustainable with my clothing by buying less, reusing and scouring the charity shops – Stockbridge has the best ones in the city.
Coffee: Counter on the Canal is a cute wee canal boat between the Leamington Terrace entrance and Fountainbridge offering great takeaway coffee. It’s the perfect pit stop on my way to work. For sitting in, I would say Brochan in Marchmont where they also serve delicious porridge. Cocktails: Lucky Liquor on Queen Street have amazing cocktails, a cool interior and knowledgeable bar staff who make great recommendations. Burger: You can’t beat The Cambridge Bar for a good burger.
THEBESTOFEDINBURGH
Pizza: Civerinos and Civerino’s Slice – the pizza is delicious, there’s a great choice and always a fun atmosphere. Brunch: Honeycomb & Co in Bruntsfield or Dishoom for delicious and unusual brunch choices. Sunday roast: It’s got to be Chop House in Bruntsfield.
Catherine McCallum
Owner of Scottish online lifestyle store 2 More Heads on her favourite city spots Fine dining: The Table on Dundas Street has the best food I have ever tasted. It seats just 10 people, you sit round the bar, watching and chatting to the chefs whilst they work. It’s a proper experience and you need to book up well in advance but it’s worth it. Afternoon tea: The Waldorf Astoria feels indulgent and they’ll cater their afternoon teas to people with food allergies like me.

Interiors shopping: Moleta Munro, Life Story and Catalog all have a great selection and suit my love of Scandi/Japanese design. I have access to some great unique pieces through my own online shop too. Art: The Gallery of Modern Art always has great exhibitions as well as an outdoor space at the front and back that the kids love. Film: We go to the Dominion when we’re child-free and get the comfy seats and a glass of wine to enjoy the film in style. Walk: We live at the foot of the Pentland Hills and any of the walks in and around there are great. I often think how lucky we are to live five minutes away from beautiful views over the whole of Edinburgh and across to Fife. LOOKING FOR THAT EXTRA SPECIAL SOMETHING? WE ASKED THE SHOPPING CROWD...
We know that finding the perfect gift can feel like a lot of pressure. That’s why we’ve asked the locals at Gap and Bibi’s Bakery for their top tips on where to go in Edinburgh City Centre when it comes to finding a gift to show you care.
Bonkers on Hanover Street is a fun wee shop with a great range of thoughtful gifts and cards.
It doesn’t get better than handcrafted baked goods from Bibi’s. They bake customised cupcakes every day and even do cupcake bouquets!
I go to White Stuff for an inspiring shopping experience and lovely present ideas. Visiting their Narnian changing rooms is a must!
I love Burr & Co on George Street, it’s the perfect secret place to treat a friend to a good coffee and some quality time!
Personalised pyjamas from Gap would be my perfect gift! I’d want my initials on them.
Oliver Bonas have a simple and modern style. For a more personalised touch you can get mugs, candles and trinkets with letters on them.

I love pairing flowers with everyday objects.
I was inspired by the ‘neon’ mood of the movie Drive when shooting these cocktail images for Kelvingrove Café.
