From Trainspotting to Fast & Furious, it seems Hollywood has quite a thing for Edinburgh and Glasgow

t’s not every day you see Vin Diesel racing down The Royal Mile in a sports car but when Fast & Furious took over the city for the filming of the ninth movie in the franchise last month, Edinburgh was transformed into one giant action movie set.

Of course, it’s not the first time the capital has played host to a Hollywood blockbuster. In 2017, Marvel’s superheroes descended on the city to film an extended battle scene for Avengers: Infinity War (2018) which spilled out of Waverley station onto the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket. It was the largest and most complex shoot ever to film in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town

and city centre requiring over 400 crew members, three months of pre-production and seven weeks of filming. Locals may have grumbled about the inconvenience but when you reflect on the financial results, you have to concede it was worth it.

Film Edinburgh estimates that the production generated north of £10 million for the city region.

Yet if there’s one film which says Edinburgh like no other, it’s Trainspotting (1996). The opening sequence of Danny Boyle’s movie based on Irvine Welsh’s book saw Ewan McGregor’s Renton and sidekick Spud (Ewen Bremner) being chased along Princes Street after getting caught shoplifting in the old John Menzies store. McGregor’s stunt roll across the bonnet of a car next to the Calton Road viaduct has become an oddly definitive image of contemporary Scotland.

But, while the story was firmly set in Edinburgh, most scenes were actually shot in Glasgow (a staggering 30 of 50 total locations).

The Proclaimers’ musical Sunshine on Leith (2013) had a similarly fluid approach to filming between Scotland’s two major cities, as did McGregor’s first big screen film with Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave

(1994). Glasgow undoubtedly has much to offer filmmakers – there’s all that stunning architecture from the artful designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh to the steel, concrete and glass of the financial district, and a plethora of gritty city locations and epic factory sets.

The Brad Pitt-starring World War Z (2013) used Glasgow’s streets in place of a post-apocalyptic Philadelphia while Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi thriller Under the Skin (2014) sees her crawling the dark city centre for prey and Andrea Arnold’s Red Road (2006) was based in a high-rise tower block which has now been demolished.

Most recently, Danny Boyle has been back in Glasgow for filming of his forthcoming Alan McGee biopic penned by Irvine Welsh and starring none other than our own little spud, Ewen Bremner. While much of the action is set in London, filmmakers couldn’t possibly skip over the most famous moment in McGee’s musical history where he stumbled across Oasis at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut. Creation Stories is set for release early next year while Fast & Furious 9 will hit screens in the spring.

The National Theatre of Scotland stage adaptation of Jenni Fagan’s gritty debut novel, The Panopticon, makes its world premiere at Platform, Glasgow on 04 October before opening at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh on 10 October. very year the return of The Enchanted Forest to Faskally Wood, Pitlochry, (03 October to 03 November) gets us thinking about crisp dark nights, bonfires and Christmas. Closer to home, light nights are becoming quite the thing with a whole host of twinkling fairy lights and state-of-the-art projections on show from now until the end of the year.

Tickets are now on sale for Christmas at the Botanics from 22 November to 29 December. The festive light spectacular at The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a lovely way to entertain the whole family of an evening, showing the gardens in all their glory. If you want to do your bit by raising some much-needed funds and helping to shine a light on the issue of homelessness, you might like to think about taking part in The World’s Big Sleep Out on 07 December. Spearheaded by Josh Littlejohn MBE founder of social enterprise Social Bite who pioneered the movement when he launched the CEO sleepout in Edinburgh in 2016 followed by Sleep in the Park in 2017 and 2018 – The World’s Big Sleep Out is taking place in 50 locations around the world including West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh. Its aim is to raise $50,000,000 and it’s thought to be the largest charitable fundraising

here’s no doubt that porn is a big player in the sex lives of many couples. As a relationship and psychosexual therapist, I can say that with confidence and the stats suggest that the prevalence of porn is only increasing. According to an annual review, the world’s largest porn website, Pornhub, has seen an increase of five billion visits per year - to an average of 92 million visitors every single day.

So porn is certainly popular. But what kind of porn? The data throws up some surprising search terms among the predictable ‘lesbian’ and ‘MILF’ requests. Here in the UK for example, ‘British chav’ is the 9th most popular search term and requests for ‘giantess’ increased by 354 per cent. No, I don’t know why either.

What I do know is that porn is easier to access than ever before (one adult filmmaker on the Generation Porn doc shockingly revealed Twitter to be among the world’s biggest porn sites) and with so much out there, searches can be tailored to the user’s very specific interests and preferences. But with consumption growing, what effect is pornography having in our bedrooms?

In recent years, we’ve become more aware that too much porn can cause problems with sexual performance, as well as a loss of attraction to real, living and breathing partners. And whilst both men and women view porn, men are impacted more significantly due to their usage patterns.

What is surprising is that men are encountering problems at a much younger age. Sexual problems in young men used to be uncommon and did not begin to rise until they reached 40, but this has changed dramatically, with multiple studies reporting historically high levels of erectile dysfunction.

The studies also reveal another new difficulty: low libido. Men become so used to the ease of viewing porn of whatever variety they like, whenever they like, that the desire for real sex is diminished. It can seem like too much effort, as well as too large a gap between the fantasy porn scenarios and real physical, partnered sex.

Add porn-related erection problems to low libido, and performance anxieties are then thrown into the mix, making the prospect of sex even less appealing. Avoidance sets in, partners feel rejected, intimacy declines, the relationship is damaged and the couple becomes stuck.

Relationship damage is also common where there is a discovery that a partner is addicted to pornography or where it has escalated into other sexual behaviours, such as fetishes or infidelity. Feelings of extreme hurt and betrayal can plunge the relationship into crisis and a fight for survival. And that’s often when people turn to therapy for help.

Ultimately, for most couples, sex is important. Research confirms that it strengthens the bonds between partners and bolsters long-term relationship satisfaction. The good news is that, with support and commitment, we can recover from porn-induced sexual difficulties and heal our relationships. Couples can rediscover the pleasure of real sex that ain’t like the movies; it’s imperfect, it’s connected, it’s a whole lot better.

Not just a B&B Carrie Mitchell discovers an idyllic escape on the outskirts of Edinburgh

T

he first B&B I remember going to was in Blackpool with my grandparents. We’re talking 30 years ago now but my most distinct memories involve doilies, floral wallpaper and the greasy fry-up we were served in a dining room which smelt of burnt fat. Ever since, I’ve avoided the ‘B&B’, preferring boutique hotels and, in recent years, the ubiquitous Airbnb. But when I was searching for accommodation for my closest friends and family over my wedding weekend, I found myself stumped. The venue was a super-cool converted dairy farm in the Balerno countryside but the nearest accommodation came in the form of ludicrously expensive five star resorts or uninspiring airport hotels. Or so I thought. And then I stumbled across Just B (or at least my Google maps search did). Zooming in, the place looked the business – a pretty white cottage with manicured gardens, a private driveway, and all within a five minute drive from the venue. Bingo. But could I really take my nearest and dearest to a naff B&B over such a special weekend? Well as it turns out, most definitely because this place isn’t naff in the slightest.

Owned by couple Geoff and Karen, who signs off every email with ‘Namaste’ and a praying hands emoji (you gotta love it); Just B is a breath of fresh air. From the moment we set foot in the airy white lobby, Karen makes us feel completely at home, immediately drawing us to her bosom (quite literally) then tactfully disappearing to let us

W settle in. The main house comprises four spacious rooms, all decorated in pure white and kept spotlessly clean. In each one, there’s fresh flowers, immaculately made beds, luxury en-suite bathrooms, a welcome basket and a bottle of wine – or in my and my soon-to-be husband’s case, a bottle of chilled Prosecco. So far, it’s up there with the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in and actually it transpires, it’s even better because there’s none of that stuffy formality. Instead, it feels like we have the run of the place.

Not only do my mates have their own bungalow just next door so they can make as much noise as they like; we all also have access to a beautiful outdoor terrace, leading off the main house, and kitted out with a woodburning stove, Sonos system and hot tub. It’s here we spend the evening before the wedding bonding, boozing and generally having the best time.

Bleary-eyed the next morning, we all descend on the dining room where there is blessedly not a whiff of burnt fat but a generous buffet laden with fruit, cereal, and pastries; and a proper breakfast menu featuring all the millennial faves: Eggs Bene, Eggs & Avo, pancakes, you name it. Bustling behind the scenes over our mammoth order of 25 poached eggs, Karen and Geoff are as sunny and helpful as ever. In fact, it’s Geoff who drives me and my dad to the wedding, kindly offering to play chauffeur with his own Mercedes limousine.

So, if you’re considering a weekend away, consider Just B. It might be only 20 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh but nestled in the foothills of the Pentland National Park, you’ll feel a million miles away and, if Karen and Geoff have anything to do with it, you are guaranteed the most wonderful stay.

ith the leaves turning jewel like shades in our parks, crescents and gardens, autumn is one of the loveliest times of year for a wander around the city.

The Royal Botanic Gardens reaches peak splendour at this time of year. The Water of Leith is ablaze too. Find and eat blackberries on a walk from Stockbridge (start with a box of delicious paella from the Sunday market) along the river past delightful Dean Village to the National Gallery of Modern Art. The Antony Gormley sculptures are back in the river too. Ann Street, also in Stockbridge, has the prettiest front gardens and the houses are gorgeous. I’d start my walk there.

With a delicious nip in the air, a warming cup of hot chocolate should be on your radar and you’ll find some of the best at Mary’s Milk Bar, Wellington Coffee and Leo’s Beanery. I knew there was more than one reason why I love autumn in Edinburgh.

Introducing the faces behind our favourite local brands WHO Andy Murray, founder of The Drinks Bakery.

WHAT The Drinks Bakery is the first drinks-dedicated bakery in the world. We create delicious savoury biscuits that are expertly flavourprofiled to match drinks such as craft beer, fine wine, whisky and gin. The Pecorino, rosemary and seaweed biscuits are the perfect partner to a G&T. WHY This stuff is in my DNA. My mum and dad were big foodies back in the ’70s and ’80s before it was cool. Mum always made tasty nibbles to go with the drinks when they had people over. I started the business because I realised that the big snack companies weren’t going to change and snacks were being left way behind the quality of the drinks served.

HOW It’s really tough to launch a challenger brand and bust a new category in the food and drink industry. The biggest challenge for start-ups is cash – we just don’t have any. Unlike the big brands who can spend millions on PR, marketing and development we have to bootstrap and be as creative as possible. It’s not a level playing field but we have the advantage of being nimble and can speak directly to our audience. I have a small team of staff who are amazing.

Nicky Howden celebrates in style at Gleneagles’ flagship restaurant

I

have a long-standing love affair with Gleneagles. From my honeymoon to babymoon, birthdays and anniversaries, the iconic Perthshire hotel is my ultimate go-to for memorable life events.

So, it was only fitting that its famous restaurant, The Strathearn, would be the destination of choice for a very special birthday celebration. It re-opened in May after an extensive renovation and its elegant grandeur and glamorous buzz feel like something from a bygone era.

Inspired by fine dining experiences of the 1920s and ’30s, it’s a place where you can expect bespoke dining trollies, silver cloches, butler trays, a pianist and theatrical flair.

It’s special.

The restaurant serves dinner every evening but it also opens for Sunday lunch offering a set menu using the finest locally-sourced and Scottish ingredients. I’d highly recommend the Gleneagles & Co Marrbury whisky barrel smoked salmon from Dumfries, carved at the table and served with sour cream, red onion, capers, lemon and oatcakes. Another great starter is the West Coast crab with cucumber, pink grapefruit, white balsamic and

hazelnut. For mains, there are five options including roast sirloin of Tweed Valley beef with all the trimmings or the stunning Seabass with roasted cauliflower, crushed potatoes, baby artichoke and Champagne sauce. Selecting a wine can be more challenging now that the wine list has doubled in size (to 700 wine labels and 39 pages, no less).

If you’re stuck, let the sommelier match your wines – he did an amazing job for us. Then for a show-stopping end to the meal, the crêpe suzette flambéed at the table is a must. They don’t do things by halves here.

Amanda Southey discovers a delightful neighbourhood café in Newington

T

he first thing that strikes me when I arrive at 27 Elliott’s is the heavenly smell of freshly cooked food. I’m desperate to know what it is and luckily, we don’t have to wait long to be seated.

There are only a handful of tables at the venue on Sciennes Road, think intimate and informal, and no reservations can be made in advance so there can be a queue but the best things are worth waiting for, right? Owned by self-taught cook, food writer and stylist Jess Elliott Dennison, who takes the helm herself in the kitchen, there’s been quite a buzz around 27 Elliott’s since it opened last summer in a quiet street behind the Meadows.

Our table by the window allows a great view of the menu, which is displayed on a large blackboard on the wall and I’m told changes weekly so that it includes fresh, seasonal Scottish produce at its very best. Breakfast, brunch and lunch are the mainstay of 27 Elliott’s but they do cater for private dining and host regular evening supper clubs too.

Since it was a Sunday afternoon treat, we decide on a mixture of breakfast and lunch opting for sage fried eggs with lemony greens and sourdough toast, £9.50 and charred squid with salsa Verde and courgette, £13.

The eggs are a triumph - surely the way all eggs should be done forever -and the squid is hands down one of the best seafood dishes I have ever tasted. A side of heritage tomato and grilled peach salad with capers, £7, is the icing on the cake; sweet and savoury, I cannot wait to recreate the simple but stunning dish at home.

We wash it down with a couple of glasses of rose, £8, from their organic natural wine list and share dessert, chocolate truffle and pickled gooseberry, £2.50. Small but perfectly formed, rich, sweet and tarte, it’s another winner.

27 Elliott’s takes simple ingredients and turns them into something unique. I look forward to coming back and will happily take my place in the queue.

Jo Morris enjoys the high life at the capital’s newest Champagne bar

B

est fact of the day: back in the ’50s and ’60s, the NHS used to prescribe Champagne for people with depression. I say it’s a fact - my friends mum was a nurse and told her the story.

Google won’t verify said tale but I’m going with it because it’s brilliant. Anyway, the point is, Champagne rocks and a Champagne bar with a lovely selection of 20 Champagnes, half of them by the glass, is just the ticket.

Which brings me to Nor’Loft, the Champagne bar at the top of new design hotel, Market Street Hotel. Named after the long gone Nor Loch that once sat there, this impressive design statement of a building is topped off by an innovative folded, stone-clad roofscape providing a truly unique architectural standpoint that seems to blend seamlessly with surrounding spires. Think glass apexes and a stunning outdoor terrace (and separate smoker’s terrace) with 180 degree views sweeping across from Calton Hill, over The Balmoral past the National Gallery and away towards Corstorphine Hill. With designer chairs, cool lighting, Kruder and Dorfmeister wafting over the

Sonos, this is a place to come and enjoy Champagne, views and sharing plates. The staff are genuinely knowledgeable, recommending exactly the right glass of Champagne for you, which in my case was a glass of Pol Roger reserve Brut, £13.50 per glass, and a glass of their house champagne Justerini & Brooks, £8.50 per glass, for my date.

We indulged in some lovely plump oysters before choosing a bottle of Pol Roger, £75, and some small sharing plates. Small plates are big news and happily Nor’Loft do them very well. We chose monkfish and serrano ham, £8.50, pan fried fig and serrano ham, £6, with a chilli jam my partner plotted to sneak into the kitchen and steal, plus a ridiculously tasty brie, gruyère and Champagne fondue, £7.50. The idea is that you come for a few glasses of Champagne and offset your hunger before heading off for dinner elsewhere, but we didn’t want to leave. We found a nook with rocking chairs and a brilliant view of a lit up church spire reflected in the full length mirror. We ordered a couple of Tweed Valley diamond steaks with chimichurri, £8 and settled in for the night. Because Nor’loft is that sort of a place. You go for a few drinks and find yourself there five hours later. I loved it. In fact, I miss it already.

sn’t it funny that when it comes to food, people most commonly associate what they eat with how they look, and very rarely how they feel? All too often, we associate food with calories, categorising foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ or ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’. But, it’s not as black and white.

Food is more powerful than most of us realise offering much more sustenance than the total figure displayed on MyFitness Pal at the end of the day. Bursting with biologically active molecules, the food we eat can affect how we think, feel and behave.

According to MIND, the mental health charity, 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, with anxiety and depression being the most common diagnosis. And, this figure only accounts for those with a diagnosis.

It’s likely most of us will experience periods of anxiety and low mood in our lifetime under different circumstances.

Scientific research to enable the application of dietary interventions for mental health in the public health setting is ongoing, but many studies have demonstrated the impact of our daily diet on mood and cognitive function, placing us in the driving seat.

The brain uses more energy than any other organ in the body, accruing 20 per cent of our daily food intake.

So, it’s not surprising it doesn’t function at its optimum level if we feed it poor quality, processed foods over nutrient dense wholefoods. So what should we be eating?

8-10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT & VEG A DAY High vegetable intake has been associated with reduced cognitive decline and in one study, a larger total brain volume. The colour in fruit and veg also comes from phytonutrients which combat free radicals produced by stress and other environmental and dietary toxins. Eat a variety of colours, cooked and uncooked, and get plenty of green leafy vegetables - broccoli, spinach, kale, collard greens, peas, cabbage, which are rich in B vitamins crucial for healthy function of the nervous system.

THE RIGHT FATS A healthy brain needs essential fatty acids (omega 3 & 6) to function.

And, they are ‘essential’ because we must get them from our diet - the body doesn’t make them. Omega 3 in particular has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties and role in protecting the membranes of your brain cells (neurons), improving cognition and memory. Find it in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, walnuts and almonds, avocados, pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

LOW GI WHOLEGRAINS The brain is dependent on insulin which we produce every time we eat. It controls food intake, cognitive function and memory. To keep a steady flow of insulin to the brain, we need to eat regularly to prevent our blood sugar dipping. Choose low GI wholegrains that release energy slowly including brown rice, oats, lentils, bulgar wheat, quinoa, beans.

Limit refined, processed foods such as cakes, biscuits and white rice, bread and pasta.

QUALITY PROTEIN SOURCES Proteins are made up of amino acids which we need for healthy brain activity - tryptophan and tyrosine. These are central to regulating mood, thoughts and feelings. Get your protein from lean organic chicken and turkey, fish, eggs, legumes (peas, beans and lentils), tofu and nuts and seeds.

The restaurant reviewer otherwise known as @PlateExpectations shares her favourite city haunts Brunch Polentoni on Easter Road still feels like a bit of a secret, in a good way. But I also enjoy leisurely brunches at the Roseleaf and Di Giorgio’s – when I can get a table.

Fine dining I’ve been fortunate to receive lots of fine dining vouchers for my birthday over the years; Aizle, Castle Terrace, The Pompadour, Timberyard and Number One (pictured

below) are all incredible.

This year I’m holding out for a voucher for The Kitchin. I’ve still never been.

Fish & chips My boyfriend and I like to nip across to Anstruther on his Triumph Bonneville for the best fish and chips in Scotland, hands down. In Edinburgh, it’s probably The Fishmarket at Newhaven (but ask for your chips extra crispy).

Remote working I wrote my first book Street Food Scotland between Whiskers in Stockbridge and 127 in Eden Locke on George Street. Both have everything I needed: nearby sockets, lovely staff who didn’t mind how long I stayed, and of course, wine. In fact, 127 has Prosecco on tap; that’s when the creativity really started flowing!
