INTRODUCTION
I-ON THIS MONTH Forget hygge; nothing warms a winter night better than a good bout of shouting at the telly. Fortunately, I’ve had plenty of opportunity to exercise my lungs of late, thanks to BBC2’s The Great Interior Design Challenge. But disagreeing loudly with the judges’ decisions (read our interview with judge and taupe-lover Kelly Hoppen on p98) doesn’t make me right. And that’s the beauty of interior design – there is no right and wrong, only strongly-worded opinions - which is why this issue of i-on is here to help you create a home you really love. We’ve got tips on making the most of your space (p32), luxe-ing up your living room (p54) and enhancing your home with plants (p58). Even our travel feature to the Cotswolds’ village where Kate Moss got married has shedloads of interior inspo in the shape of beautiful boutique hotel Thyme (p72). And speaking of fashion and furniture, check out
p40 for our article on the love affair between the two. Our competition is also about making living more lovely – for details of how you can win a stunning hand-stitched Wendy Morrison Design rug, see p16. Congratulations also to the winner of our January competition, Barbara Wilson, who will soon be soaking away the winter chills at One Spa (absolutely no shouting allowed). As the pink lady behind interior blog The Pink House, it’s been an honour to guest edit this homefocussed issue of i-on. Now I’m returning to the land of all things rose-tinted (and to London), I leave you lucky readers in the incredibly capable hands of acting editor Carrie Mitchell, who brings years of working for some of the UK’s most prestigious magazines back to her native Scotland. Finally, I’d like to welcome to the world editor Nicky’s new baby Lily,
and designer Paul’s new daughter Holly, both born in December. And big congrats to head of photography Susie Lowe, who got hitched to Stephen at the end of January. Here’s to exciting new starts, both in our lives and in our homes. Cheers!

GET THE COVER LOOK Make-up artist Mairi Gordon reveals the secrets behind our cover girl’s fresh-faced look

Inspiration for February’s spring-bright cover came from Glasgow’s very own watercolour wonder, Bluebellgray, whose fabulous fabrics are best known for gracing covetable chairs and sumptuous soft furnishings. In a fashion-meets-furniture twist, we asked Bluebellgray to make a dress using their Rothesay fabric, tailored to fit Edinburgh fashion blogger of the moment, Joan Collins (howdoesjoandoit.com – see our interview with Joan on p24). Finally, we called on top makeup artist Mairi Gordon to create a beauty look to complement the painterly prints. Here’s how she did it…
1. I started with a little Embryolisse Moisturiser, available in larger Boots stores. 2. Next, I applied Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation in Ultra-Light. 3. Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer in Shade 3 brightened Joan’s eyes and disguised any blemishes. 4. I added definition to brows using a Mac Pencil Brush, keeping the strokes small and controlled for a natural look. 5. I used the Illamasqua Fundemental Palette, a mix of mint green, pastel yellow, purple and metallic, on Joan’s eyes. 6. A Benefit Pink Shade Pencil along the waterline made the eyes pop. 7. After curling the eyelashes, I used Lancôme Grandiôse Mascara on the top lashes only. 8. I applied Mac Powder Blush in Swoon to the apples of Joan’s cheeks, then used No7 Shimmer Palette in Rose as a highlighter. 9. For the lips, I used Illamasqua Lip Pencil in Manic and filled in with Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Woppin Watermelon. 10. Finally, I set the look with Illamasqua White Loose Translucent Powder. Getting married? Scottish Hair & Make-up Designers Mairi Gordon and Julie McGuire can create your perfect big day look. EDINBURGH PROPERTY TRENDS Ben Di Rollo, Sales Director at boutique solicitor-estate agency, Coulters, gives us an overview of the current trends in the Edinburgh property market…
FAMILY HOMES UNDER £500K “We’re seeing a huge demand for properties in the £350k-£500k price bracket. There’s a real shortage of family-friendly-sized homes in this range so when they do appear on the market, they’re being snapped up for much more than the home report value.” OPEN PLAN LIVING “Homes with spacious living and dining areas are extremely popular, especially those which bring the outside in and incorporate the garden via large glass or bi-folding doors. In Victorian or Georgian homes, we’re seeing a trend to create light and airy social spaces by knocking down internal walls.” RENT OVER BUYING “With little property price growth expected over the next two years, the rental market is likely to increase. Rental values continue to rise, and in some cases, may cause a barrier to those seeking to save for deposits.”

The super-chic fashion blogger - and this month’s cover star - shares her favourite things about the city she’s fallen in love with, since moving here from Miami. Which are your favourite Edinburgh high street fashion stores? There are so many good ones but Zara, Topshop and H&M in particular. Any hidden boutique recommendations? For second-hand shopping, I love The Stock Exchange on Young Street. Covet on Thistle Street is also great. Discovered any great Scottish fashion brands since moving to the capital? Walker Slater – I just love their classic Scottish style. Which Edinburgh-bought item of clothing do you wear the most? My Hunter boots. I was so happy to discover the company started in Scotland. It makes perfect sense, given the weather!

Favourite Edinburgh street for a fashion shoot? During Autumn, I loved shooting in Princes Street Gardens. Over Christmas, I was really into George Street. And now I’m liking Regent Terrace in the New Town. How would you describe Edinburgh’s signature style? Before I came here, I expected to see all the men in quilted jackets and women wearing tweed and trench coats but while I do sometimes see that look, the people of Edinburgh are far more eclectic and daring with their wardrobes. How has the weather changed the way you dress? I layer much more than I did in Miami, and I’ve also discovered a love for stockings. I still wear skirts but always with nude tights because black tights don't always look right.

THE PEOPLE OF EDINBURGH ARE FAR MORE ECLECTIC WITH THEIR STYLE THAN I EXPECTED What shops would you most like to see in Edinburgh? J.Crew and Sephora please! Favourite restaurant? One thing I love about Edinburgh is all the dining options. My husband Chase and I enjoy trying them all but keep coming back to Ting Thai Caravan on Teviot Place for great, affordable food. Do you have a favourite coffee shop? Wellington Coffee on the corner of George Street and Hanover Street for the best coffee and warmest atmosphere. Where do you go to escape the city? I haven’t felt any desire to escape yet, but I do feel my best when I'm near the sea so Cramond Beach is a regular haunt. LOOKING GOOD, LADIES For the first time, Space NK’s Pro Artist Team will be holding speedy makeup masterclasses at the Princes Square store on Wednesday 15 February. There’s a fair bit of movement going on in the Glasgow restaurant scene, with a number of restaurants acquiring a second home and some moving into the city for the first time. First to make its move is award-winning chippy Catch in Giffnock, which has opened another branch in Netherlee. Still to move in but with missives signed on its second home, Paesano is opening soon on the site of the old Costa Coffee on Great Western Road. Also moving west with its second site is east end stalwart, Celino’s which will be putting down roots in Partick. Marchtown, they of the cool pop ups, have put down permanent roots at the former Little Botanica in Strathbungo, opening Tuesday to Sunday. New kids on the block, include Edinburgh street food favourite, Tuk Tuk, which is now in possession of the keys to its first Glasgow restaurant on Sauchiehall Street, and will soon be followed by fellow east coasters, Innis & Gunn, moving into the former Cul-de-Sac building in Ashton Lane sometime this spring. We also hear it’s game on for Super Bario, the city’s first arcade bar, which will finally open at Trongate – but that’s what we heard for most of 2016 too. Watch this space for more news.

an exciting, original and innovative city but this is not generally reflected in the design of our hotels.
Anna Murray’s
Glasgow
The city’s best kept secret? The Hidden Lane is full of budding creative businesses and the tearoom is amazing.
Anna Murray is originally from London but calls Glasgow her ‘forever’ home. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art, she worked at leading London design practices Tilney Shane, Imagination and Morey Smith for clients including IBM, Warner Music and Heal’s. Since her return to Glasgow in 2000, she’s worked predominantly on residential projects and with her new business, Habitus, she’s helping clients to love their homes a little more. How would you describe your signature style? The collaborative nature of my approach means that every project is different. This keeps things fresh for me and means that clients know they are getting something unique to them – they are not getting my ‘look’. What’s the city’s most inspiring building? This changes all the time but I recently had a look around the old Stow College building. It’s been acquired by GSA to enhance the campus and provide a suitable home for the School of Fine Art. It’s a wonderful example of a functional 1930s building that manages to be effortlessly beautiful. An interior you’d love to tackle? Any of the rather generic Glasgow hotels. It is

What would make the city a stronger attraction? I wish there were more furniture shops. I miss Habitat and it would be wonderful if Muji were to make a return. Is the city centre biting back? Could Miller Street be on the verge of stealing Finnieston’s culinary crown? Susie Cormack Bruce chews it over.
M
emories of Miller Street, just off George Square, will mean different things to different readers of different ages. For some, it will inspire fond memories of Glasgow’s former stationery mecca CF Nash (where you could famously buy Christmas cards in June) or as a favourite taxi pick-up point at the side door of the long-gone Littlewoods store. For others, it will be hedonistic nights out ordering at the bar of Max Headroom or Fixx. Fast forward to 2017 and Miller Street has become a bona fide dining destination, with the openings of Paesano Pizza, The Spiritualist and The Spanish Butcher moving in to join longstanding resident, SoHo. Add to that mix, the proximity of neighbouring offshoot Virginia Court, home to Brutti Compadres and Cup/ Gin 71, and for the first time in a long time, Finnieston may find itself faced with a rival in your appetite’s affection. I say may as Finnieston’s culinary dominance will continue for a while yet - the recently opened Alchemilla sees to that – but, looking forward, it will be surprising if Miller
30
Street doesn’t capitalise on its burgeoning culinary cache by welcoming more restaurant openings. It has a number of unloved sites crying out to be transformed into Glasgow’s latest ‘must dine’ destinations. And the existing offering is varied enough already to satiate most appetites. At The Spiritualist you’ll find Scotland’s biggest gantry with over 300 spirits on offer and an inspired cocktail list; perfect if you fancy a daiquiri before you dine. Brutti Compadres or the aforementioned Spanish Butcher offer great dining with an Iberian twist and for an excellent Afternoon Tea, Cup in Virginia Court hits the spot. There’s a double helping of pizza at SoHo and Paesano and, if you’re looking to break out the chopsticks, the Korean flavoured, Seoul is a great place to do so. There’s a definite buzz around Miller Street and if a few more local, quality, independent eateries were to be added to its mix, just maybe we’d have another major dining destination worthy of the same reputation as our riverside favourite.
In with the new. Join us in February and not only will you get two months free, but we’ll also give you three extra guest passes. Now there are no excuses! onespa.com/memberships

EMILY MURRAY INVESTIGATES HOW SCOTTISH DESIGNERS ARE HELPING US SAVE SPACE IN OUR HOMES
I
s your home doing your head in? Maybe you don’t have enough room to hang your clothes so they’re lying all over the floor? Perhaps your children’s toys appear to be multiplying and are taking over every room? Or maybe your pad just feels dark and cramped and you long for light and air? One man who knows how to make the most of even the smallest and most awkward of living spaces is Richard Murphy, the architect who designed the Murphy House, the Edinburgh home that won RIBA’s prestigious House of the Year prize at the end of last year. Competition judge Philip Thorn says: “Although it’s a small property, the Murphy House is deceivingly large inside due to the clever use of space. Every room contains a surprise and the attention to detail is exceptional.” Built on an awkward plot at the end of a terrace in Edinburgh’s New Town, Richard Murphy’s house is described by RIBA President Jane Duncan as “part jigsaw puzzle, with its hidden and unexpected spaces, and part Wallace and Gromit, with its moving pieces and disappearing walls.” The house includes a hidden bath in the master bedroom, a folding corner wall, and sliding bookshelf ladders that glide around the subterranean library, among many other unique, space-saving features. While we might not have the design expertise (or spare plot of land) to create or transform our own homes in this way, we can certainly learn from Richard’s innovative approach. And there are plenty of surprisingly affordable design solutions on hand right here in Scotland to help us use whatever space we have more effectively. Read on for more info…

SMART KITCHEN STORAGE Euan Goodman, founder of new East Lothian kitchen and furniture design company Kobod (kobod.co.uk), is passionate about how smart, simple design can massively increase your kitchen storage and living space on a budget. The company uses solid birch plywood to form the cupboards, which take a mere three minutes each to make, thanks to a time- and cash-saving automated manufacturing process. This meant he could install a full, custom-made kitchen in his own home for around £8,000. “We used to have an old farmhouse kitchen with rubbish wall cupboards and a narrow island,” says Goodman. “Since our renovation, we have four times as much storage space, and that’s without even adding any wall cupboards. Now when we have people round, instead
34
of them escaping to the dining room, they hang out in the kitchen as it’s much more inviting.” How does Goodman create so much extra space? He puts it down to clever design software and storage drawers that maximize the space available. He’s a big fan of what he calls ‘pan drawers’, which are much deeper than standard drawers, meaning you can fit larger appliances such as blenders and large saucepans into them. As they are drawers instead of cupboards, it’s also easier to access the area at the back, so you utilize every inch of space. Another smart aspect of his design is the inclusion of open bookshelves, which give the space a softer, lived-in feel. Kobod’s clever kitchen cupboards will be available to buy on their website in the summer, but if you’re desperate for extra kitchen storage now, contact euan@kobod.co.uk for a bespoke quote.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Extensions nowadays can be so much more than a one-design-fits-all box tacked onto the back of a house. The extensions that are most costand space-effective are in fact the ones that incorporate more than a little ingenuity. A great example of this is a small ground floor extension housing a master bedroom, designed by Edinburgh-based Crew Architects (crewarchitects.com) for a home in the capital’s Southside. Although it had to be narrow, the new extension feels wider due to extensive use of glass, which helps give a sense of openness. There’s plenty of wardrobe storage for the owner’s clothes, but this is concealed, so the bedroom feels spacious and uncluttered. The ultimate use-every-square-inch design sees even the extension’s stair treads open to reveal secret storage compartments.

JML garden room
And while extensions can be costly, rest assured that even if you do sell your home, your efforts will add up to a good investment. As TV property expert Phil Spencer says, adding an extension can add 11 per cent to the value of your property. THINK OUTSIDE THE HOUSE It’s not just your home that can be reworked to give you more space – your garden can be a big part of the solution too. Creating more space is the ultimate goal with a garden room, which – done properly – is a relatively easy way to extend your home, as the good ones are quick to erect and usually don’t require planning permission. “For our clients, it’s been about finally being able to reclaim the spare room,” says John Langley from JML Garden Rooms in Perthshire. “A garden room can happily
38
house that makeshift spare room gym: running machine, weights, yoga mat and all. Or it can become an art studio, a study, or even a teenage games room, liberating the sitting room from piles of computer games and DVDs. Whatever it becomes lightens the load on the main house, freeing up space for other uses.” And again, there’s the extra advantage of adding value to your home when and if you sell. As Langley puts it: “As more and more people are working from home, our clients have seen their garden room investment increase the value of their home significantly as so many buyers are now really attracted to the idea of an outside, usable space.” Not to mention the fact that working in a separate building means you can’t hear the kids’ light saber battles. Working in a space that doesn’t resemble the Death Star? Priceless.

Carrie Mitchell explores the growing trend for haute homes.
I
t only takes a glance at Instagram to see how obsessed we’ve become with our homes. Social media not only allows us to peek inside other people’s apartments, it gives us the opportunity to show off our own. And now we can let the world see how well dressed our walls and windows are, it’s not just what we wear that defines our style. As the line between fashion and furniture blurs, more and more designers are working across both realms, taking a truly 360 approach to life-style. ARE CUSHIONS THE NEW TRAINERS? Once known mainly for his range of quirky slogan t-shirts, East London designer Henry Holland has grown his collection to become a major fashion brand. With his own signature range and a diffusion line in Debenhams, where next? Our living rooms, of course. Last year, the first House of Holland x Habitat collection launched in Habitat stores across the UK and quickly sold out. Turns out, Henry’s bold prints and patterns lend themselves just as well to cushions and couches as they do to clothes, so Habitat have invited him back for 2017 – this time, into our bedrooms. The new collection will launch in March and, once again, the pieces will feature textiles taken straight from Holland’s spring/ summer catwalks. The range is under wraps for now but you can bet it’ll be bold, bright and brash: “You can get naturally

high on colour and pattern,” says Holland. “Your home can really change the way you feel. Cushions are the new trainers!” A VERY FASHIONABLE PHILOSOPHY Wanting to live our lives surrounded by beautiful things is not a new concept. Way back in the 1860s, British textile designer William Morris promoted the adage: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. It is this ethos that inspired husbandand-wife team Javvy M Royle and Frieda

Gormley to create their lifestyle brand House of Hackney in 2011. With a background in fashion and product design, they combined their skills to create bold textiles and furnishings inspired by nature and nostalgia. Their iconic palm prints became instant design classics, and it wasn’t long before the couple added fashion to their portfolio. Now, alongside the sofas, lamps, cushions, curtains and wallpaper, there’s a full range of contemporary menswear and womenswear too, including floral print tea dresses and bold patterned t-shirts.

ART FOR EVERYONE The best thing about the Houses of both Hackney and Holland is that they are accessible to us all. Sure; they might not come cheap, but starting at around £60 to £80 for a cushion, these products are certainly not out of our reach either. Debenhams was one of the first big names to bring fashion and homewares from ‘exclusive’ designers into the realm of the everyman. The Designers at Debenhams collections launched over 20 years ago with many of the earliest recruits, such as John Rocha and Matthew Williamson, still on board today. The priciest item in the current Butterfly Home by Matthew Williamson collection is a velvety throw for £120, with most of the range coming in at less than £50. Even more bargain-ous are the fashionable furnishings available from IKEA. Recognising the growing crossover between the worlds of fashion and interiors, the Swedish super-brand launched their own designer collaborations last year with three fashion-forward collections produced by menswear designer Katie Eary, fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck and textiles designer Martin Bergstrom. And this month, they’re welcoming another fashionable name into the fold with the launch of their fun, festival-inspired SPRIDD collection from London menswear designer Kit Neale. “It’s been a fun journey and hopefully the collection will be just as much fun to use”, says Kit about the brightly printed tents, bags, boxes, rugs, mugs and poufs, as well as the rest of the vibrant must-haves in the limited edition range, which is priced from £2.75 to £35. IKEA are certainly happy with the outcome: “Kit Neale’s designs and prints are all about youthful energy, attitude and fun. It’s been an exciting process,” says Henrik Most, Creative Leader at IKEA of Sweden. “In many ways, fashion designers create a toolbox that helps us create our own identity and how we want to be looked upon. Here we, as a furnishing company, candefinitely learn a lot.” And so too, can we. If we can bring the glamour of fashion into our homes as well as our wardrobes, why on earth wouldn’t we? After all, style isn’t just about what we wear, it’s about how we live.

like Filipa K, Ganni, Mads Nørgaard, &other Stories and COS. What are your favourite fabrics? Raw silks, denim, cashmere, lace, leather and cotton. High-quality fabrics are at the heart of the MERCER7 concept. Do you prefer high street or designer clothing? A mix of both is the key. Quality is a big focus for us, so if you see something from a less expensive brand, it's a hidden gem we love. Why do you avoid bright colours on MERCER7? There is of course a place for some colour in everyone's wardrobe, but too much focus on fashionable colours can lead to what I call ‘throw-away fashion’. This doesn't sit well with our philosophy: ‘sustainability through timelessness’. All our wardrobe staples are there to be worn over and over again, and are selected to be easily styled with clothing you already own. Who are your fashion inspirations? I love street style; real people wearing real clothes. Of course I've also got style crushes, such as Caroline de Maigret.
Best piece of styling advice? Keep it simple; don’t chase the trends. Heels or flats? Flats for every day without a doubt. I’ve got my eye on a pair of studded suede ankle boots. HOW I LUXED UP MY
Living room 54
INTERIORS
I Interiors and fashion blogger Erica Davies from www. the-edited. com explains how she transformed her new-build living room from beige and boring to fun and fabulous
BEFORE How the living room used to look
’ll admit it: I went to look at this house under duress. I’d never lived in a modern house before, so the fact this one was eight – rather than 108 – years old was a big turn off. But when I walked inside I couldn’t ignore the light, the space and the fact it was a completely blank canvas. In short, it ticked all my boxes. And so, at the end of 2015 we bought it, and I began transforming the place into a family home that was comfortable as well as fun and inspiring. When I started thinking about how to decorate the living room, I had a really clear vision. It was big enough to really go for it – the size of the room and number of windows meant I could go mad with colour. I also knew I wanted to create lots of little living areas, rather than push the furniture up against the walls, as the room is so large. Before you all ask: yes, I do have the world’s most patient husband. He married me knowing my idea of a great night in is Location Location Location and buying a lamp online. So while I run everything past him (including the finances) he trusts in my ‘vision’, while he can’t really imagine how the finished room will look. The first thing I did was remove the carpets and replace them with real wooden flooring from Kährs. I knew we wouldn’t have a sofa against the wall, so I asked the electrician to put floor sockets in so I could have a lamp table in between the sofas. For the walls, I chose Juniper Ash by Little Greene Paint Company which, despite being blue, has a lovely, warm feeling. I also painted the radiators in the same colour so they blended into the walls. All the window dressings were replaced with shutters from The House of Shutters – I love their simplicity. Buying a new sofa was a big decision, but I finally decided on the Bagsie from Loaf in midnight blue velvet. The other grey sofa is a Parker Knoll I found on eBay and had reupholstered, but I am very tempted to move that upstairs and get the two-seater Scott sofa from Made.com, in green cotton velvet.
55
INTERIORS
I-ON LOVES... The separate living areas Family members can use the same space in different ways at the same time. The blue and green scheme Whoever said this colour combo should never be seen needs their eyes tested. The fiddle leaf fig plant in a gold pot A fabulous mix of nature and luxury; plus it goes beautifully with the banana leaf chair. The built-in bookshelves A simple way of adding character and personality to a modern home. The pops of yellow They break up the blue and green scheme and keep things contemporary.
56
I’m a huge eBay fan; I’ve found so many great pieces including the multi-drawer unit, the green chest of drawers and the pair of chairs I covered in banana leaf fabric. My top tip would be to save your searches and check in every day; you can even set up alerts. So if you’re after a vintage haberdashers chest, for example, search specifically for that, then regularly check for new items. I’d seen an image on Pinterest that sparked the inspiration for dividing up the room into sections, with large built-in bookshelves creating the reading corner. They were an investment, but I absolutely love the character they’ve brought into the room. Painted the same colour as the walls, they look like they’ve always been there. I went for fretwork at the base, as
the two walls on either side of the doors have radiators mounted on them. So I boxed them in as part of the design but the fretwork means the heat can still circulate. I was originally planning to reupholster the eBay chairs with House of Hackney’s ‘Palmeral’ fabric, but it actually worked out cheaper sourcing the classic Beverly Hills Hotel ‘Swaying Palm’ fabric and having it shipped from the US. I found a great upholsterer locally, and since the finished chairs came home, they’ve made me happy every day. Now the living room is complete, my next big project is the kitchen – another bland room I’m going to completely renovate. This time I’m going for a party vibe because everyone knows the best shindigs happen in the kitchen.

WAYS PLANTS CAN ENHANCE YOUR HOME
Interior designer Eleanor Horwell explains why bringing the outside in will brighten up your home – and your life.
W
hen I joined Pinterest, one of my first discoveries was stylist and author Justina Blakeney and her bohemian, plant-filled ‘Jungalow’ home in California. Her style was like a big gulp of fresh air; I was hooked. Having never been a ‘plant person’ before, I suddenly started scouring garden centres for elusive tiny succulents and rare drape-y hanging plants to green up my home. These days, no scouring needs to be done. Anyone with even a passing interest in interiors will have clocked that house plants have been a huge decorating trend in 2016. If anything, this obsession is only going to grow, as suppliers are responding to demand with ever more wonderful, exotic and accessible greenery to beautify our homes. Companies like Geo-Fleur (www.geo-fleur. com) even provide plant subscription services so you can get your plant fix without ever leaving the (overgrown) house. Ready for a bit more greenery in your life? Here are seven reasons why you should stock up on plants for your pad…
58
INTERIORS
PLANTS CAN GO ANYWHERE From a little potted succulent on your bedside table to an enormous philodendron growing into your shower, there’s nowhere your green friends won’t be happy and look great. I’m now at the point where there are plants in every room in my house, and they’re spilling out into the corridors. Even the kids tend to their own little leafy friends in their bedrooms (much less risky than giving them hamsters).
one
PLANTS LOVE SMALL HOMES The teeniest of pied-a-terres can be transformed with some well-placed foliage. Try hanging plants from the ceiling or a shelf in a macramé hanger (check out @_helenrobinson_ on Instagram for some great inspiration), or invest in a wow-factor plant like my ‘String of Pearls’, which will happily sit on the highest shelf and provide an instant talking point. Unless you have cats. If you have cats it will provide an instant climbing frame and result in disaster. Take it from me.
two
THEY AREN’T MUCH WORK (HONEST) With the rise in popularity of succulents, it’s not as hard as it used to be to keep a plant alive. The brilliant plant specialists at www.roco.co.uk say: “When it comes to watering your succulents, a good soak from below every couple of weeks is the easiest method.” Fittonias (pictured) are also pretty and easy; completely droopy when they’re thirsty, but straight back to perky once they’re watered. Put them somewhere you see them often and keeping them alive will be a breeze.
three
59
FEATURES INTERIORS
THEY LOOK GREAT TOGETHER Why have one plant when you can have loads? Style a vintage stand (this one is from a car boot sale), a side table or an upturned crate with a haul of plants from your local garden centre. More is more. For vessels, use anything you can lay your hands on. Little jugs, egg cups, old jam jars, some concrete pots from the garden. If it’ll hold a plant, it should have one in it.
four
THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR SUNNY SPOTS Some plants like sunshine, others aren’t bothered. Since we live in a pretty unsunshiney place, best stick to the ones that don’t care. Ferns are brilliant for dark, sunless areas, and any succulent, such as a cool stripy Haworthia will be totally happy being shady.
five
MANTELPIECES ARE PERFECT FOR PLANTS There’s nothing more pleasing than a beautifully styled mantelpiece. The key is to create a happy mixture of things something metallic and shiny, something earthy and matte, something unusual, and a nice green plant. Always add a plant; it’ll give height, irregular shape, and a great zing of colour.
six
GREEN GOES WITH EVERYTHING As Justina Blakeney herself says: “I’m forever obsessed with green – it’s got so much vitality to it, and makes me feel all at once energized and calm.” Plants: they look fantastic, they’re easy, versatile, bang on trend AND good for you. Time to start making your home jungalicious!

Or maybe terracotta pots of forced bulbs such as blue grape hyacinth. If their decor is... Look no further than seasonal blooms that complement their interior décor, says Edinburgh florist Rachael Scott If their decor is... ECLECTIC A mixed posy of traditional spring flowers in bright colours, e.g. hyacinth, tulips and narcissi, would look gorgeous in a jug on the kitchen table. We don’t give you just a room, we give you a whole apartment, complete with living room and fully equipped kitchen (you don’t have to go out for diner-à-deux). What’s more, our hotel staff are always on hand to lend a hand with everything from organizing trips to making sure there’s a welcoming bottle of fizz waiting for you. Celebrity makeup artist Lauren Gollan reveals her expert tips to a flawless face
C
Can you tell us some of the most common makeup mistakes? Colour matching and foundation can be an issue, people often think that the more make-up you wear, the better you look. This is rubbish! A foundation should be used to enhance the natural look of the skin, using the wrong colour and texture of foundation has the opposite effect and can look over done. Get colour matched by a brand professional and take a tester of the foundation to try on and see the true results in natural light. Also, eyebrow shaping. We teach that your eyebrows are “sisters, not twins”. They should be shaped to enhance your natural brow shape not forced into a new shape altogether. Also be careful to use a product that suits your hair and skin colour.

TRIED AND TESTED Clear and Brilliant facial treatment at
Zen words Sarah Johnston
A
t the wrong side of 30, fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation are all setting in. That’s why facial treatments for me are now less about the pamper and more about results that last beyond a post-treatment glow and if they can be done in my lunchbreak, that’s even better. Cue Zen Lifestyle and the new Clear & Brilliant facial treatment - a gentle form of fractional laser that fights the natural effect of ageing with little or no recovery time. It’s safe, non-surgical and non-invasive, and clinically proven to even out the skin tone and restore radiance after just one treatment. What’s not to love? After a consultation with my therapist, my skin was prepped with a topical anaesthetic cream to numb any discomfort (it is a gentle resurfacing laser treatment, after all). The treatment is performed using a laser device that drills microscopic holes into the surface of the skin to boost collagen production and cell renewal. My therapist

glided it across my cheeks, forehead, nose, chin and neck and the sensation was mildly irritating but not unpleasant. Afterwards my skin felt tight and sunburnt and looked slightly wind-chapped but the hydrating mask that followed dissipated any heat and redness. Over the next week, my skin had a sandpaper-like texture but it looked normal and wasn’t at all dry. I followed my therapist’s instructions with my skincare regime (high SPF, gentle products and exfoliation after five days) and by day five my skin was noticeably plumper and clearer than it had been in years. By day six, my pigmentation had reduced and by the end of the week, I had seriously radiant, rejuvenated and line-free skin. Wow, how I glowed. And still do, a whole month later. THYME TO YOURSELF Emily Murray visits the Cotswolds’ prettiest living larder, a 17-bedroom estate where Kate Moss tied the knot and bedrooms are straight out of a film set

TRAVEL
N
estled in the centre of Thyme, the picture-perfect country estate in the Cotswolds, is pretty St Peter’s Church, where Kate Moss got married. A flick through the visitor’s book reveals Piers Morgan recently enjoyed his stay, while a glance out the window is rewarded with views of Thyme’s manicured grounds, designed by celebrity gardener Bunny Guinness. Breakfast is served in a soaring medieval barn, and during the day you can relax with one of the estate’s many beautiful books in The Baa, Thyme’s bar and chill-out area (named after the fleecy Cotswold sheep seats nestled between sumptuous velvet sofas). At bedtime, you ascend to your luxurious room, conceived by BAFTA award-winning set designer and interiors whizz Roger Hall. Every room is home to striking pieces of furniture sourced from nearby Tetbury's famed antique shops, with a nature-inspired colour palette: greens, greys and blues act as a background for pops of bright colour. But despite the glamour, Thyme is quite literally down to earth: its connection to the land in the most fundamental sense is one of the things owner Caryn Hibbert is most proud of. Caryn estimates that around 85 per cent of the deliciously inventive food served to guests is produced on Thyme’s estate, AKA its very own living larder. The few ingredients they can’t grow themselves are sourced locally and seasonally; sustainable luxury is at the core of everything that happens here. We are taken for a tour round the kitchen garden and farm by culinary director/ beekeeper/gardener Daryll Taylor. His enthusiasm for the land is infectious: after tending to the hens, he proudly points out the curly kale, which accompanied the shepherd’s pie I ate at Thyme’s 17th century inn, The Swan (Kate Moss, who lives locally, is a regular). We continue our tour, with Daryll practically jumping for joy as he spies the first tips of asparagus pushing through the soil. Thyme also prides itself on growing produce you can’t buy in a supermarket, such

as yacon, a vegetable that looks like a sweet potato but tastes like a water chestnut. As we discovered that evening, it is excellent served with crab, chilli and blood orange – Waitrose’s vegetable buyers take note. It’s not just the dining table that benefits from the estate’s living riches: The Baa also takes menu inspiration from the kitchen garden. Daryll creates natural infusions, which are passed to genius mixologists, who combine them with premium artisanal spirits and fresh herbs to create delicious cocktails. For those guests who fancy getting even closer to the land, Thyme runs cooking classes using seasonal, self-picked produce, and, starting in the spring, will also offer walks with their expert forager, plus guided tours of the kitchen garden. Although Thyme only opened its doors as a hotel in September 2015 (between 2009 and 2015 it operated solely as an upmarket cookery school), the next stage of development is due by the summer. Plans are in place for a spa in the old piggery and 10 more bedrooms to add to the 17 luxurious rooms already available. We strongly suggest you get booking, before Mossy or Morgan bags your room… Rates start at £285 per double room per night on a B&B basis in a double suite in Thyme House. Only children over 12 years old permitted, except in the Old Walls Cottage, Thyme’s accommodation catering for under12s and dogs. www.thyme.co.uk

Weeknd
David Pollock introduces the mega-talented R&B artist everybody is talking about...
“I
’m a motherf**king Starboy” the Weeknd swaggers in his 2016 hit Starboy. Judging by his meteoric rise over the past few years, the Canadian artist’s arrogance has some justification. His first official release was as a credited vocal guest on Crew Love, the 2012 summer hit by his fellow Canadian Drake. Since then we have seen The Weeknd evolve into a similar artist to his globe-spanning contemporary. Both create a very modern kind of R&B which is chill, electronic and more than a bit sorry for itself, especially in matters of love. Yet last year’s third album Starboy is probably The Weeknd’s masterpiece so far, a record which fuses his usual style with an acute sense of pop music which just f**king works. The tracks which bookend the record sum it up, and both are linked by the fact they were created with the involvement of French electronic superstars Daft Punk. The opening Starboy itself was an unlikely global megahit, a strutting, minimal groove which apparently earned its name partly in tribute to David Bowie’s Starman. At least, taken as a pair, the songs sum up two very different artists who helped to define 2016. At the other end of the album is The Weeknd’s brightest track, the cheerful and enthusiastically sexual I Feel It Coming, the other Daft Punk collaboration. Especially on his last record, 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness, The Weeknd wholeheartedly explores the darker side
78
of rap’s themes, playing the part of the bad boy whether women are around or not. Yet with Starboy there’s a sense of a journey, travelling from the arrogance of Starboy to the accepting romance of I Feel It Coming, via songs like Party Animal which suggest he’s getting sick of playing around. Just like Drake, there’s a swaggering manliness to The Weeknd’s work, but he’s got the hooks and he also seems to have enough self-awareness to keep things interesting, in an era when megastars often steer clear of interviews and we only know them through their music. Born Abel Tesfaye, The Weeknd is the son of Ethiopian immigrants to Canada and a high school dropout and confessed drug user at the time. His stage name is reportedly a reference to the way he lived for the weekend, although the spelling change to avoid confusion with a Canadian band means it can be read as ‘The Weakened’, which also fits with his undercurrent of self-examination. Three albums into his career, he’s a bona fide megastar who has worked with Beyonce, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey and Ed Sheeran, but his work can be so personal it’s claustrophobic. How The Weeknd brings all of this to an arena stage will be thrilling to discover. The Weeknd plays the Hydro, Glasgow, 10 March, www.thessehydro.com. His album Starboy is out now.

Five picks from Glasgow Film Festival 2017 Taking place from 15 - 26 February, the Glasgow Film Festival is a growing audience focussed celebration of film making. From just 6,000 attendances in the 2005 launch year rising to over 42,000 in 2016, the festival’s diverse curation offers something for all tastes. Here’s our top five...
1. The Levelling - Glasgow Film Theatre / 21 Feb (18.15) & 22 Feb (10.45) The haunting debut of Edinburgh-local Hope Dickson Leach tells the moving tale of a father and daughter forced to confront past grievances in the wake of a family tragedy. Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick puts in another compelling performance. 2. The Slab Boys - Glasgow Film Theatre / 26 Feb (13.15) John Byrne’s The Slab Boys is one of the great, joyous landmarks of Scottish theatre. Twenty years after Byrne directed the exuberant cinema adaptation, GFF is celebrating with a special screening that will be attended by the man himself. 3. Bodkin Ras - Glasgow Film Theatre / 22 Feb (20.30) Filmed on location in the remote Scottish town of Forres and featuring a cast largely consisting of locals amateurs, this is an innovative, award-winning tale of a mysterious foreigner shaking up a close-knit community. 4. Benny - Glasgow Film Theatre / 22 Feb (20.30) & 23 Feb (11.00) Frequently described as the greatest boxer that Scotland has ever produced, Benny Lynch became the flyweight champion of the world. Archive footage, animated sequences and admiring comments combine to celebrate his achievements. 5. Wee Govan Pipers - The Pearce Institute / 19 Feb Reducing a policeman to tears when you are 10 years old is no mean feat but with a sense of humour and buckets of charm, a group of young Scottish, Nigerian and Chinese pipers from Govan achieve just that. RHUBARB, PRESTONFIELD HOUSE HOTEL, EDINBURGH Recommended by Jojo Fraser “I took my boyfriend (now husband) nine years ago and told him that when he finally proposed we’d be getting married there. I love the fact that it’s so central but has that saucy 'getting out to the country for a romantic night away' vibe. They often light candles on the outside terrace, ideal for those exciting early dates - gotta love a PDA under the stars.” MONTEITH’S, HIGH STREET, EDINBURGH Recommended by Harry Pooney “The romance begins with the stroll up the Royal Mile and through the enchanting arched close. Inside, the whisky snug style interior is matched with a menu offering the best in Scottish produce with artisan butchery and fine seafood. It’s luxurious without the stuffiness, the drinks are nothing short of phenomenal and the five-star service tops things off nicely.” DIVINO ENOTECA, MERCHANT STREET, EDINBURGH Recommended by Kerryn Kirkpatrick “Divino’s is hidden away in the Old Town and it has all the right ingredients for romance: Italian food, candlelight, wine library, gorgeously lit courtyard, fabulous service... and a special, intimate feel.” CAFÉ FISH, MAIN STREET, TOBERMORY Recommended by Susie Kane “Tobermory has a beautiful fishing port lined by brightly-coloured buildings and surrounded by forest that stretches into the hills. We sat outside on the balcony overlooking the pier and bay which was peppered with tiny fishing boats and enjoyed our meal, the tastiest seafood we’d ever had, with a crisp bottle of white.”

TWO FAT LADIES AT THE BUTTERY, ARGYLE ST, GLASGOW Recommended by Paul Russell “Because it’s slightly off the beaten track, Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery always feels a bit illicit to me. There’s lots of little nooks and crannies, so perfect for clandestine drinks or dinners if you’re just looking to spend time with your partner without bumping into the world and his wife.” THE WESTERN CLUB, ROYAL EXCHANGE SQUARE, GLASGOW Recommended by Nicole Johnston “It oozes luxury and the sweeping staircase adds to the grandeur. Ask for a window table to enjoy the twinkly lights on the Square. It’s where my husband took me on our first date and 12 months later we were married. Can’t get more romantic than that!” GUY’S RESTAURANT, MERCHANT CITY, GLASGOW Recommended by John Petersham “It’s a bit like stepping into a Parisian bistro, with individual lamps on the tables and pottery on the walls. The menu is huge, so it’s good when you’re still getting to know someone and their tastes. The staff are great at making sure you’re sorted while letting you get on with your night.”

CAFÉ ANDULUZ, CRESSWELL LANE, GLASGOW Recommended by Rory McLeod “It may not seem top of the list for romance but I’ve had a few great dates here. It’s tapas, so got a casual vibe and sharing plates are always a good way of breaking the ice on a first date. Plus, the stairs are really steep meaning you can be a gentleman and offer an arm for support on the way out.”

LUNCH @ TOWER RESTAURANT
FOOD AND DRINK
P
erched atop the award-winning architecture of The National Museum of Scotland’s turret is the Tower. There’s an exciting hint of Bond villainy about heading into the side door of the museum and taking the lift to the roof lair where you’re greeted at the door and ushered through to the luxuriously draped dining room. It’s hard to think of a restaurant with a more commanding view of the city, which is worth the visit in itself. It’s barely noon and we’re met with a very fine bottle of Champagne, partly because it’s my birthday but also because we don’t get out much, don’t judge me. It happens to be a clear, crisp and sunny winter’s day and even without food, it’s an enchanting way to spend an afternoon. If you’ve not been, I’d implore you to treat yourself; they also do what looks like a marvellous afternoon tea. Food then, and while for review’s sake I normally like to try and go a bit off-piste, it’s my birthday so if you think I’m having anything other than scallops and steak (and cocktails) then you’re sorely mistaken. Lucky, then, that both are something of a speciality at Tower. My perfect, butter-browned scallops (pictured) arrive with skordalia potatoes (Greek garlic mash) and some
crispy cured ham. A crazy good bouillabaisse sauce adds some very welcome lobster vibes to the dish, worth every penny of £17.95. For my main, I opt for the Sirloin with red wine sauce (sauces are clearly chef’s strong point); it’s a fantastic 28 day dry-aged cut from famous butcher Simon Howie. It’s served with a very sturdy Malbec, and I ascend to birthday nirvana. While we went all out in the decadence stakes, it’s worth noting Tower also offer a two-course lunch at just £19.95, meaning a proper afternoon treat need not break the bank. LUNCH @ CHELSEA MARKET words Susie Cormack Bruce
I
love when a disappointment comes good. Take my recent experience when, after securing a last-minute table at the muchlauded Alchemilla in Finnnieston, I was disappointed to find said table was a bar style one and not conducive to the laidback lunch I had in mind. With my dining companion Ronnie also suffering an old war wound that wouldn’t thank him for an afternoon on a stool, we reluctantly made our apologies with a promise to return another time (we have and it’s fabulous) and tried our luck at the neighbouring Chelsea Market. Newly opened, we hadn’t heard much about it but with spacious booths aplenty, if the food was sketchy at least we’d eat in comfort! Modern British in flavour, with a nod to Italy in the polenta and ravioli mains, the menu was mainly what we expected. However there were a few surprises; the first being my delicious starter of crispy lamb breast with scorched feta and green harissa,
£5.95 (Ronnie opted for the old faithful of mushrooms on toast), £5.95. When the dishes arrived, we realised we may have been doing the chef a disservice as both looked a treat, with Ronnie’s mushrooms topped with a confit duck egg (yolk ripe for bursting). Both tasted just as good and I was kicking myself for playing safe with the homemade burger, £12.50, for my main. My more optimistic lunch mate had chosen the braised lamb shoulder with pearl barley, shallots and kale, £13.95, and this took the mains prize. That’s not to say the burger wasn’t good – it was – but after that excellent starter, I wish I’d tried the red deer, £19.50, instead. As we had settled nicely, a second bottle of Malbec, £26, was ordered along with desserts – spiced quince with bay leaf ice cream, £6.50, and poached chocolate cake, £6.50. And bay leaf ice cream? Wow. Chelsea Market may not have been our first choice of restaurant that day but this lunch was definitely one disappointment we were more than happy to stomach. 1146 Argyle St, G3 8T, Tel: 0141 339 6909, ww.chelsea-market.co.uk

WINE BY THE GLASS So, you’ve got a nice red sat in your wine rack and you’d love a glass but don’t want a whole bottle, or the remainder to go bad within a few days. Someone’s finally solved this age-old problem. The Coravin system uses a needle to pierce the cork and replaces the oxygen displaced by the poured glass which reseals the cork. The result is the ability to pour a glass and replace the wine in the rack. The system starts at £199.99, www.coravin.co.uk

BIT OF A BLETHER WITH…
What’s your favourite colour? Taupe of course! But I do love other colours, like greys and khakis… Least favourite? My nightmare combo has to be the blue and brown colour palette you see some people go for sometimes. That makes me itch slightly!
Kelly Hoppen, interior designer and judge of BBC2’s The Great Interior Design Challenge talks taupe, toilet roll covers and decor tips
My design philosophy is… to create timeless and understated elegance while fusing the eastern principle of simplicity and the western taste for sumptuous textures and luxurious finishes. Best interior design tip? Good planning is essential when designing a space. You have to be certain about every aspect; quick fire decisions often don’t pan out as expected.
Candles or bubble bath? Candles. Tell us a secret... I love florals – but just subtle hints throughout a neutral space. Why was Daniela a worthy winner of The Great Interior Design Challenge? She is an inspiring woman with an incredible eye for design, who proved her credentials week after week. Her love for interior design is obvious yet inspiring and refreshing.
What’s your favourite hotel? I’m a big fan of the LUX Resorts in Mauritius.
What’s your interior pet hate? I really dislike over-cluttered spaces. Loo roll covers are also a major no-no for me.
