INTRODUCTION

I-ON THIS MONTH We all know how fleeting the Scottish summertime is so to help you make the most of any rare sunshiny days, we put together this issue jam-packed with ideas for where to go and what to do when the mercury rises. You might not think you’re the outdoor type but when you’ve made it through our must-read guide to the ultimate fresh air spots in Edinburgh and Glasgow (p.40), you’ll be dying to get out and about, whether you set off on a peaceful country walk or just park yourself in the nearest beer garden. As for me, I’ll be spending any warm summer’s days on Portobello Beach. It might not seem like the dreamiest destination but if you get up early enough and pick the right day, the blue skies and golden shoreline could rival the Riviera. At least that’s what we told our gorgeous model Rachel Flett when we talked her into taking a dip in the chilly waters on our summer fashion shoot (p.50). Sorry

Rachel, the resulting images might not have made the cut (blue lips and goosebumps just ain’t chic) but you will forever have our admiration for gamely striding into the sea. We take our (straw) hats off to you. Speaking of summer accessories, we’ve got a treat for one lucky winner this issue who will win a luxury leather weekend bag courtesy of Aspinal of London (p.10). If that’s not a reason to book a weekend getaway, I don’t know what is. You’ve got behind the i-on Breakthrough Awards. What do the awards mean to you? Edinburgh is a hugely cultural city with some fantastic talent, incredible people and small businesses. I could not have built my business without the support of like-minded generous individuals. So, the opportunity to give something back is very important to me. Why did you chose to partner us on the Art, Music and Culture category? It would be difficult to live and work in Edinburgh and indeed Scotland without being affected by the wide variety of art, music and culture on our doorstep. I’m proud to live in such an inspiring city and the opportunity to champion emerging talent was one not to be missed. i-on Breakthrough party aside, what other events are you involved in this year? I recently sponsored and attended the Global Gift Foundation in Edinburgh. Set up by Eva Longoria, it aims to create a positive impact on the lives of children and women around the world. I’m also helping to organise two fundraisers in September this year: Lunch with an old bag, a lunch for 400 women to raise funds for the ‘Princes Trust’; and the St James’s Place Foundation Ball, an evening at the Museum of Scotland raising money for the SJP foundation.

In a nutshell Secret of your success? Absolutely know your weaknesses and play to your strengths and truly value the people who work with you to help create and build on that success. Key piece of financial advice? Set your objectives out very clearly and understand in depth why they are important to you and the impact that the results will have. Somebody hands you a million pounds, tax free. What do you do with it? I’m lucky enough to be able to support others personally and via my business – a share of this would absolutely have to go to others who need it more than me. Edinburgh The crime writer on roadworks, rock star dreams and 30 years of Inspector Rebus

When did you first start writing? I've always written - I tried drawing comics as a kid, then moved on to song lyrics, poems and short stories. I was inspired by just about everyone I've ever read from William McIlvanney to Lawrence Block to R L Stevenson. If you hadn’t found success as an author, what job would you be in now? I suspect I'd probably be a teacher, an academic. Maybe a journalist. Those seemed to be the way my life was headed when I was in my 20s. But I'd rather have been a rock star... This year marks the 30th anniversary of your first John Rebus novel. Did you expect to be writing the character for so long? No, he was only meant to be around for one

book. But a detective is a good character for exploring society from top to bottom and I find him a fascinating and complex personality so he stuck around. The character was born and raised in Fife not far from where you were. What other similarities do you share? We both drink at the Oxford Bar and like the same music - but that's about it. We are very different characters; I'm not sure he'd have much time for me if we ever met. After living in Fife, London and France, what made you settle in Edinburgh? I spent seven happy years in Edinburgh as a student and met my wife here. It's a manageable size of city with an extraordinary history so I'm

For drinks: Traditional bars such as those Rebus frequents - from the Oxford Bar to The Abbotsford. But for a cocktail, I go to the bar at the Balmoral Hotel - they do a great Bloody Mary.

Books: I have an independent bookshop near me - the Edinburgh Bookshop on Bruntsfield Place. Lots of writers live in the neighbourhood and we all seem to shop there.

Dinner: I love Ondine for seafood; Castle Terrace for spectacle; but more often than not I head to the Bruntsfield Hotel - it's a short walk from my house!

To walk: The Water of Leith from Dean Village to Stockbridge. Or the canal out towards Ratho. Or The Hermitage. It's a bit out of the way so visitors often miss it. But walking into the woods, you feel like you're stepping into a Walter Scott novel - or TV's Outlander.

Live music: I love The Caves on Niddry Street. Such an atmospheric venue. And the Jazz Bar on Chambers Street is a great spot for music too.

never short of material for my books. Both our sons grew up in the city too and still live here. What’s the best thing about the city? Its geology and architecture. Walking through the city inspires me. Anything you would change about the capital? Is there any way to put a stop to the seemingly endless roadworks?! Where do you go for a quick escape from city life? There are so many quiet spots, from the Water of Leith to the various hills. Even the closes off the Royal Mile can lead to secret silent spaces. Where would you take visitors to see the ‘real’ Edinburgh? I always take visitors for a long walk, stopping off at bars along the route: the Blue Blazer, Bow Bar, Oxford Bar, Clark's... A real flavour of the city.

DESIGNER DETAILS Edinburgh College of Art graduate Frankie Dean, is about to appear at Graduate Fashion Week. We caught up with him before the show

Who are your style icons? Grace Coddington [the flame-haired Creative Director of American Vogue] and Agyness Deyn [model turned actress and BFF of designer Henry Holland]. What’s been your biggest ever fashion faux pas? I quickly realised I should never wear white because I just can’t keep it clean! Who would you most like to dress and why? I would like to dress people like Tilda Swinton, Erin O’Connor, and Hannah Martin. I admire their fearless approach to style – they dress for themselves, nobody else. Which designers do you admire? My work is informed by designers like Comme des Garçons and Dries van Noten. What’s next for Frankie Dean? I’m interested in moving into more print and textile development to pursue my interest in challenging how to use colour and line. Laura Cully tries out the valet service at Edinburgh’s Buggy Repair Centre Words I never thought I’d say: “I’m taking the Bugaboo for a service and valet.” But after eight years of diligently obliging off-road, sandy beaches and cobblestones, the Rolls Royce of the buggy world (IMO) had done its time in our household and was headed to pastures new for the arrival of a friend’s newborn. So in a bid to ensure she was at the top of her game, off she went to the Buggy Repair Centre in Stockbridge. The shop specialises in Maclaren and Bugaboo but Graeme (the buggy guru) tackles broken brakes, wonky wheels and crooked chassis for Stokke to Uppababy and everything in between. Three days later (you can hire a buggy from them while yours is out of action) I picked up a good-as-new version of my beloved Bugaboo - steam cleaned to within an inch of its life using environmentally friendly products, pumped up and ready to go. Informal and bustly, and situated right in the heart of town on Castle Street, CAU is the perfect place for a catch up with friends over great food. As everyone knows, the best meals begin with cocktails so we started with a CAU girl martini, £8.50, and CAU-LYPSO, £7.50, before turning our attention to the Malbec menu (yep, a WHOLE dedicated menu). To kick off the meal, we shared paprika chicken anticuchos skewers with guacamole, £6.75, and belly of pork tempura, £6.95. The chicken was succulent and well flavoured, but the pork tempura a little heavy. Next up: BEEF, of course. I chose tender and melting medallions, £15.95, and my partner the sirloin, £18.50, with a plethora of sides including CAUSLAW (geddit?!), £3.25, onion rings, £2.95, and chunky chips, £3.25, doused in classic pepper sauce and blue cheese hollandaise, £1.95. Stuffed to the gunnels, we just managed to squeeze in (beside another glass of ohso-good Malbec) chocolate fondant and ice cream, £6.25, and berry cheesecake, £6.25. We left with top buttons undone and happy faces, delighted there’s another place to enjoy steak and chips in the capital without breaking the bank. What’s the story behind the name of your blog? I started my fashion and travel blog almost six years ago now after chatting with a friend who suggested I take the plunge. Her name is Fi so the name of the blog was born. I love it but my only regret is the numerous emails I receive addressed to Fifi!

Favourite area in the city? Finnieston for its amazing eats and drinks, and proximity to the beautiful Kelvingrove Park. I always like showing friends from out of town around my favourite haunts in the west end. City’s best kept secret? Its optimism. I often hear people putting Glasgow down but I truly think we’re a city full of friendly, happy people.

Which do you enjoy most – travel or fashion? Wow, tough call... probably the travel. Fashion is fun but transient. The memories of travel stay with you forever and I have been so lucky to visit some amazing places over the years. What’s the best thing about coming home? The dogs, always. They’re Finnish Lapphunds, aged 2 and 10, one good, one extremely naughty! They have their own hashtag on Instagram #MrKandTux Where would you recommend for a day trip from the city? I’m a huge fan of the beach and we find ourselves in Troon most weekends but my favourite beach within striking distance is Yellowcraigs at North Berwick - it’s beautiful and quiet and you can head to the Lobster Shack at the marina for a meal or Steampunk for an excellent coffee afterwards.

hen my dad asked me what would make him a good dad, I said if he let me open up another packet of Percy Pigs. He said he needed more than that. But that is what makes him a great dad, he makes me happy. Not just with sweets though. He makes me laugh. Apparently he is some sort of comedian, I don't really know what that is. But he makes me laugh every day. He pulls funny faces, he does funny voices. He picks me up and spins me round. It is like having a rollercoaster in my house. He puts me up on his shoulders until I can almost reach the sun. He tickles me until my tummy is sore with laughing. He plays hide and seek with me but he’s not very good because I

FANCY A DIP?

‘Outdoor swimming in Scotland’ might seem like an oxymoron, but there’s always sunshine on Leith so there’s nothing to stop you from taking the plunge. David Lloyd’s (davidlloyd.co.uk) Newhaven and Glasgow clubs have heated outdoor pools complete with sunloungers and parasols so if you squint your eyes you could be in the Med…. honest. For those a little braver, wild swimming has had something of a resurgence in the last few years, with wetsuit-clad fans taking to the country’s lochs and reservoirs for a dip. For two-time 10-kilometre open water world champion and Olympic silver medalist Keri-Anne Payne, the appeal lies in a sense of freedom. She says “there are no lane ropes, no fast lanes to navigate and no smell of chlorine, just an incredible buzz. Loch Lomond is my all time favourite place to swim, because the water is crystal clear.” Edinburgh’s Portobello beach is a popular spot, busiest during the summer months; while South Queensferry gives a pretty impressive view of the bridges if you take a pause to tread water. If you’re after a more serene swim, head to Threipmiur Reservoir in the Pentlands. Its high peat content means the water can be unseasonably warm, making for a less breath-stopping jump in. Gourock pool (west of Glasgow) offers the best of all worlds. It ticks the outdoor and salt water boxes, but is also heated to 29 degrees and has changing facilities and showers. Best of all, on selected dates over the summer they’re open for midnight swimming, so you can gaze at the stars while you’re back-crawling. How nice does that sound? RISE AND RUN By exercising first thing, you’re far less likely to skip it altogether. One of the hardest parts of exercising on holiday is motivation. By delaying your workout to later in the day, you risk choosing G&T’s and guilt over exercise.

FIND YOUR SEA LEGS The sea offers an abundance of excellent ways to keep fit: swimming, kayaking, surfing, snorkelling, wind surfing, water skiing, diving, hell, even

hopping on the banana boat will help burn off a few calories.

Cards on the table time: my legs are not my best feature. They have never been slender, long or toned. They are more of the solid reliable type, an oak tree rather than a willow if you like. So, any suggestion that their appearance could be vastly improved is generally met with a dubious raised eyebrow. It was with said eyebrow that my doubtful legs and I attended Lift shape sessions at Edinburgh's YourGP. The treatment is supposed to give skin a firmer look, using radiofrequency waves to contract the collagen. Sarah, the cosmetic technician, took a glance at my thighs and said six sessions would make a difference so off we went. In each session, she'd simply rub a hand piece gently over the area, which wasn't painful, it just felt similar to someone gently squeezing. Still sceptical, I was shocked to see significant improvement after six sessions. Gone were the bumpy cellulite nasties and in their place, slimmer thighs and smoother skin. But, confides Anna, this one’s different. “We won’t be selling this house in a hurry,” Anna smiles. “This is the one we’ve been looking for, on the perfect street. This is home. So we’re here to stay.” It’s easy to see why it’s a keeper – the house has me at ‘hallway’, a generous space which hints at the colour and pattern delights to come: green original encaustic tiles, leafy Christian Lacroix wallpaper and a throne-like rattan chair upholstered in deep pile apple green Designers Guild velvet. Turns out this chair is part of Anna’s own range of bespoke, hand-crafted furniture made in Indonesia. As we move towards the stairwell, light spills from above, reflecting off the pale walls and whitewashed floorboards. “I started by painting everything white, then layered on colour bit by bit,” explains Anna. The result is a wonderfully bright home, with grey accents below dado rails and on doors, fitted wardrobes, fireplaces and chimney breasts to ground the space and pick out interesting detail.

The white floor and walls also help to showcase the townhouse’s many eyecatching accessories, most of which can also be found in PAD Lifestyle, Anna’s luxury boutique, which sells a fabulous interiorsmeet-fashion mix on Edinburgh’s Howe Street, and online. As I stand there coveting everything around me, I ask whether PAD stands for “Pretty Awesome Décor”. Anna laughs: “I’d love to say yes, but it’s really ‘pad’ as in ‘your home’. It’s also a launch ‘pad’ for independent designers – I love helping new, talented designers reach a bigger audience of design-thirsty consumers.” One of the local artists Anna champions is Edinburgh-based textile designer Hatti Pattisson, whose ‘Into the blue’ velvet cushions adorn Anna’s bed. “Hatti was the first local creative we stocked at PAD – she’s an amazing artist,” enthuses Anna. As well as supporting up-and-coming artists, Anna has an expert eye for curating items by some of the interior world’s biggest names including Jonathan Adler, Kelly Hoppen and Designers Guild - both at home and in PAD. Perhaps her biggest designer crush though is on Christian Lacroix – her house pays

The mostly-white wow-factor kitchen, for example, is set off and softened by a Christian Lacroix palm tree mural. The tropical kitchen mural is repeated in five-year-old son Leo’s bedroom, with added splashes of green. “Leo’s obsessed with the Incredible Hulk and all things green right now,” says Anna. “This mural worked perfectly in his room.” An oversized Bluebellgrey beanbag waits invitingly for someone small to superman onto it. The hint of green in the Pols Potten lamps in the blue sitting room – which I christened thus due to its striking navy feature wall (Designers Guild’s Moonlit Night) – is

Oversized lamps bring sculptural statement, colour and form to a room. Art hung low means you can easily see it, and it feels more accessible. Fabulous chandeliers ramp up the wow-factor. I-can’t-believe-they’re faux flowers everywhere are an excuse for some stunning vases. Splashes of green bring vibrancy to the rooms – green goes with everything. The dark blue sitting room wall camouflages the large TV with ease.

another example of how Anna uses colour to take rooms to the next level. And then there’s the dreamy firstfloor pink drawing room, with which I fall instantly in love. A huge Muuto peachy-pink sofa, rose gold over-sized lamp bases, pink faux foxgloves in the fireplace and splashes of pink inside the lampshades combine to create a restful yet glamorous space. The soaring ceiling is accentuated with a supersized mirror, large lamps and the big sofa. “Playing with scale is one of my top interior design tips - I especially love oversized lamps; they make such a statement.” Any more interior advice? “Accessorize with abandon! Make your home your own – there are no rules…” Although Anna has no formal interior design training – her background is in PR and advertising – the years spent refurbishing their string of properties (along with an office refurb and another two flats) have clearly taught her everything she needs to know. “Some interior designers can be a bit sniffy about the fact I don’t have any qualifications, but I’ve learned as I’ve gone along. I’m always playing around with colours and layouts and different

items from PAD.” How does husband Haj feel about the ever-changing decor? “Oh he’s happy to let me get on with it. Anna Matheson discovers the best of the country in an action-packed two-week trip

FLY INTO CAPITAL CITY HANOI The centre of Vietnam’s capital is steeped in a millennium’s worth of history, but it’s also its busiest district. The lively streets are dotted with ancient temples amongst the narrow buildings and filled with an overwhelming mishmash of street vendors, locals and tourists – as well as more scooters than you can imagine. MUST-EAT: The city is renowned for its street food, but to find the hidden gems, you might need help. We booked ourselves onto a street food tour (hanoistreetfoodtour.com), which gave us a friendly introduction to the city’s best bites from classic noodle dishes like Bun Cha (rice noodles with grilled pork,) to Banh Mi Vietnamese sandwiches and egg coffee. TREK IN SAPA An eight-hour overnight train ride from the capital, the beauty of Sapa is worthy of a detour. It was established in the early 1900s as a hill station by French colonists but today, its mountains and plunging valleys full of rice paddies are perfect for trekking. MUST-SEE: We booked a private guide through Sapa Sisters, a collective of local women from neighbouring Mung Hoa Valley. After opting for a tough climb that took us to the top of the valley, our hard work and sweat in the 30-degree heat was rewarded with panoramic views of the breathtaking scenery in almost total isolation from other hikers. CRUISE HA LONG BAY No trip to Vietnam would be complete without taking in the beauty of Ha Long Bay. Set in north Eastern Vietnam and about four hours by bus from Hanoi, the best

way to take in the serene emerald waters is by boat, so book yourself onto a cruise (www.thesinhtourist.vn) to sail through the thousands of towering limestone islands topped with rainforests. MUST-DO: A two night cruise will take you further into the more peaceful (and less touristy) Lan Ha Bay and allow you enough time to stop on the largest island Cat Ba, where you can hike through the mountainous national park and stay one night in a cabin on the beach. Paradise. CHILL OUT IN HOI AN Next, we flew into Hoi An, just an hour’s hop from Hanoi. With its mix of decorative Vietnamese tube houses, vibrant French colonial buildings and Chinese shop houses and temples, Hoi An is bursting with history. But it’s also a cosmopolitan destination when it comes to its gourmet restaurants, coffee houses and lounge bars. We spent most of our few days in this beautiful old town sipping Vietnamese drip coffee and watching the world go by. MUST-BUY: Take advantage of the expert local tailors and get yourself a bespoke outfit made at a fraction of the price you’d pay in the UK. I had a beautiful dress made by Peace Tailors in the Ancient Town and will think of my trip each time I wear it. DISCOVER VIETNAM’S HISTORY IN HO CHI MINH CITY Once known as Saigon, Vietnam’s largest city is an hour’s flight from Danang on Hoi An. It played a major role in the wars and remains the place to discover the country’s rich history. Sure, the city has a more Western

feel, with plenty of chic brunch spots and restaurants on offer but with only a couple of days to spare, we focused on seeing the sights. MUST-SEE: The War Remnants Museum gives an essential yet sobering look at the brutalities of the war and its effect on the Vietnamese people, while a little way out of the city are the Cu Chi tunnels, where you can take a look into some of the 250km of secret tunnels used throughout the conflict. For some retail relief, stop by Benh Thanh Market to stock up on trinkets to take home. RELAX ON PHU QUOC ISLAND After travelling all over the country via plane, train and boat, a few days of sun, sea and relaxation was just what the doctor ordered. Located in the gulf of Thailand, an hour’s flight from Ho Chi Minh, Phu Quoc island is still largely undiscovered and covered in dense greenery but luxury hotels are popping up amidst the jungle. JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa is by far the most tranquil of the hotels on offer, as the fivestar retreat is nestled in one of the island’s southern bays near the beautiful Sao Cao beach – and only 15 minutes from the airport. Every suite offers a stunning view of that deliciously blue sea and whether you want to paddle board on the private beach, recline by one of the three pools or be pampered in the spa, there’s something for everyone. MUST-EAT: With five gourmet restaurants, there is plenty of food on offer, but our favourite spot was by far Red Rum – a romantic veranda style restaurant set by

hanks to a wrong turn, what should have been an hour and a half journey from Edinburgh to Crieff turned into a three hour ‘scenic’ detour via Bathgate. It wasn’t exactly the best start to our weekend so when we arrived, Knock Castle Hotel & Spa had a challenge on their hands to turn this into the relaxing break me and my husband needed. The transformation, however, was instant. Our room, the Drummond Castle Suite (pictured), featured a two-metre circular bath and a traditional four poster bed. Just the thought of a luxury soak and an uninterrupted sleep had an

immediate calming effect. There were plenty of thoughtful extras too such as a bouquet of fresh flowers, handmade chocolates and a bottle of chilled Prosecco. But most impressive of all was the stunning view of the peaceful Perthshire countryside. Already feeling the tension in my shoulders ebbing away, I headed to the spa for a relaxing full body massage then to the pool for a refreshing dip before dinner. Enclosed in a glasshouse and surrounded by woodland, even the pool makes the most of those beautiful country vistas. But it was dinner in the Rooftop Restaurant

where the hotel played its ultimate trump card. The culinary highlight was the dark chocolate sphere which, when smothered with hot salted caramel sauce, melted to reveal layers of chocolate brownie, mixed berries and ice cream. I took my last bite just as the sun was setting behind the rolling hills - a view definitely worth taking a detour to see.

THEIR NEW ALBUM IS ONE OF THE YEAR’S MOST ANTICIPATED When news dropped in May that The National’s new album Sleep Well Beast would arrive in September alongside a UK and US tour in support, you could sense the intake of breath from their devoted fans across the world. And The National are clearly a band to feel devoted to, with nearly twenty years of history behind them and (soon to be) seven albums which have tracked them growing and developing both musically and as people. They’re exactly what you want from a career rock group, with a sound which challenges but feels comfortably familiar all at once.

THEY’RE A BAND EVERYONE NEEDS TO HEAR The Brooklyn quintet – lead singer Matt Berninger, with brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner and Scott and Bryan Devendorf – have grown alongside their fans, and it’s no exaggeration to say their last album, 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me, is a modern classic, an uplifting epic which takes listeners on a real emotional journey. File them alongside Radiohead or Arcade Fire (both also playing Scotland this summer), and enjoy the wealth of great music they’ve created, from 2005’s raw Alligator to 2010’s rapidly maturing High Violet. Hopefully Sleep Well Beast lives up to the expectations.

THE FRONTMAN’S A PRETTY SNAPPY DRESSER “A suit is a sign of respect,” says Matt. “I realised around when Boxer came out that I wanted to [be in a band] for a long time, and I didn't want to look like one of these guys in their forties trying to look like they are still in their twenties. So I got a suit fitted and thought "I can wear this until I'm a 100 years old." It's important to show I respect that more people are coming to our shows

now. This is important, and I should dress up for it.” One of Matt’s career highlights is being complimented on his style by one of his musical and sartorial heroes: “I passed Leonard Cohen between two tents at a festival in Barcelona and he complimented my hat. Those were the only words he said to me: ‘Nice hat’, so that was a big moment for me.”

THEY’RE 2017’S UNDISPUTED KINGS OF THE SAD SONG And their sombre mood is with good reason, as it turns out. “Can I say for the record, I’m a little bit in love with Hillary Clinton, and I’m not afraid to admit it,” Berninger told Rolling Stone in the run-up to last year’s US election. Since they formed in Cincinatti, Ohio, way back in 1999, the band have been staunch political campaigners, supporting Barack Obama’s election campaigns and many other causes. They were unlikely to have been impressed with the eventual election result.

THROUGH IT ALL, THEY SING OF LIGHT IN THE DARK On record, Berninger sounds like a man who has been through the mill and still found hope enough to stand tall, and it’s this quality which gives fans such inspiration. “Being able to put into some form of expression, the confusion and the anxiety and the fear and the loneliness and the heartbreak and the desire... you don't solve those things but just by writing them down, it helps you sort of own them,’ he says. ‘The songs I write are sad, but they're a way of staying above water.’ Plus he insists he is a pretty happy guy day-to-day: “The biggest thing is being a dad and a husband, those are the things I work hardest on and all that stuff has made me enjoy the music stuff so much more, because it puts it all in perspective.”

The Child by Fiona Barton (Transworld, £12.99) When three women read the same seemingly insignificant paragraph in an evening newspaper, they each find themselves drawn into a decades-old tragedy. BEHIND THE BOOK

“Thank God it’s worked out, I have very few other marketable skills!” Edinburgh author Kaite Welsh on her debut novel The Wages of Sin a gothic murder mystery set in the capital I’ve always been fascinated by the 19th century and writing historical fiction is the closest I can get to time travel. When I was studying at Edinburgh University, I saw the plaque dedicated to one of the first female doctors, Sophia Jex-Blake next to one dedicated to Arthur Conan Doyle and thought “There’s a crime novel in there…” It took a few years to get around to writing it but now I’ve created a world and characters I don’t want to leave! The Wages of Sin is the first in a series following my character Sarah Gilchrist - fallen woman turned amateur detective. Sarah is one of Edinburgh University’s first female medical students who discovers the murdered corpse of one of her patients, a prostitute called Lucy, in a dissection class and goes on a crusade to bring her murderer to justice. It’s a bit Gothic and very feminist, but also funny in places.

It took two years to write the book, during which time I got married, left London for Edinburgh and let my friend convince me that watching six seasons of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was valuable research. It wasn’t, but I do now have a healthy crush on Jane Seymour. The novels get written through a combination of coffee and not much of a social life. I’m lucky that my wife is also a writer so often our idea of quality time is to sit at our respective desks ignoring each other. As a child, I was constantly reading, writing or daydreaming. I wrote my first novel after I finished my Masters - it was terrible, but I had fun writing it, then I wrote two more that never got past a first draft. When the idea for The Wages of Sin came along, I had a good idea of where I’d been going wrong before and I’m delighted to say it’s worked out. I have very few other marketable skills. Method 1. Blitz all the chimichurri ingredients together in a food processor. 2. Season each side of the steak with salt, pepper and olive oil then put on the BBQ. For medium rare, cook on each side for approximately 2 minutes then check the temperature with a probe, in the centre of the steak. Rare is 52 degrees celsius, medium rare is 57, medium is 63, medium well, 66, and well done, 71. Cook until desired temperature is achieved. 3. Once cooked, let the meat rest for three minutes before slicing – this results in a juicier, tastier steak. While it rests, prepare the gem lettuce and tomatoes in a bowl or plate and add some pickled red onions and chimichurri. 4. Add the thinly sliced steak and then more pickled onion and chimichurri on top. Season and accompany with your favourite glass of red wine. Enjoy! alking into Otro on a Friday evening, we were greeted by a friendly front of house team who seated us in the airy dining room, perfect for a summer’s evening. Showcasing seasonal ingredients, the menu had ample choice but not so much as to be overwhelming. I chose mushrooms on toast, £5.95, to start. Served with wild garlic and a runny poached egg, it was comfort food at its best. For mains, after a lot of deliberation I opted for North Sea trout served with parsley mash, sea vegetables and smoked mussel veloute,

£16.50. Bursting with freshness, each mouthful was as enjoyable as the last. My dining companion chose the slow-cooked beef cheeks, curly kale and bourguignon sauce, also served with parsley mash, £16.95. The beef was rich and warming, making for a hearty dish. A shared generous side of green beans with roasted hazelnuts, £3.50, was the ideal accompaniment to the rest of the meal. I always make room for desert and I wasn’t disappointed. My pistachio and peanut butter parfait, £6.50, was delicious without being overly rich. We also took the hit and tried Yorkshire rhubarb cheesecake and stem ginger ice cream, £6.50, the perfect combination of tart and sweet. A lovely bottle of Sauvignon Blanc accompanied the meal, and we received a macaron each to take home, the perfect end to a lovely meal. INNIS & GUNN BEER KITCHEN Susie Cormack Bruce gets down with some Glasgow gastropub grub

pread over the three floors of Ashton Lane’s former Cul de Sac – with a bustling ground floor microbrewery and bar, restaurant on first floor and the more cocktail friendly Attic Bar on the second – the Innis & Gunn Beer Kitchen looks the part and it’s evident some serious investment has gone into it. Rightly so, as this is the Edinburgh brewers first venture west and the current flagship in I&G’s burgeoning empire Understandably beer is the focus here and this new addition is the first of the I&G Beer Kitchen’s to brew onsite, with special editions being offered for those who fancy something a little different. One of which, the marshmallow milk stout, £5, my partner happily sampled and clearly enjoyed as he soon ordered up another. Despite being fully booked (we reserved a table the week before), the restaurant felt spacious and the staff were on top form, allowing us a little time and space to reach our decision. The menu looked pretty standard British gastropub fayre but it proved to be a bit more polished. I started with the haggis Scotch egg, £5.50, while Mr. Milk Stout went for the KFC – Korean fried cauliflower, £5.50. The KFC surprisingly moreish and I’d definitely order both again. For mains, I chose the fish and chips, £11, but got serious food envy when I saw the pork belly, £12.20, being placed at the other side of the table. My dish was good but the pork belly definitely won the mains round. Plates cleared, we were then shown the desserts list but frankly I was stuffed and opted for an espresso, £2, instead while my man happily devoured the chocolate pot, £5.50. Is it the best in the west food wise? Mmm, no but then it’s not trying to be. This is honest, hearty gastro pub grub. If it’s an epicurean experience you’re after, head to Finnieston but if you’re looking for decent tucker in a

I WAKE UP… at 7am, shower and have a cup of tea while checking for any overnight web orders then I have to rouse the sleeping, teenage monsters. I present my 14-year-old daughter Lorna with breakfast as I wake her because she would happily just head out without eating. I tend to circumvent my 16-year-old son Scott who sticks to a rigid routine in the morning, requiring very little thought from him or me. Our two dogs, Izzie and Lucy, are always far more thrilled to see me than the kids, who just grunt. Once I get back from dropping the kids at school and walking the dogs, I’ll make a bowl of porridge or a smoothie before driving to work in our soap kitchen, just 10 minutes away, in the Ochils. AT WORK… I’ll have another cup of tea and get organised. I lay out tins and bottles and make up ingredients for products being made that day. I am responsible for creating, designing and making our range of products so I’m a bit of a one-man band in the soap kitchen. But I am lucky enough to have an amazing business partner who does all the jobs I avoid like the plague - cash flow, accounts, business planning and much form filling. She also keeps a rein on my ‘creativity’.

AFTER HOURS… You never really finish work when you run your own business. Paperwork and invoicing gets done late at night, couriers get booked before bed, and emails responded to while the kids are doing their homework. We tend to rely on pasta and easy meals as inevitably one of the kids has activities in the evening too. DOWNTIME… I head to bed about 11 and always take time to read and unwind for half an hour. You have to grab the ‘memoments’ when you can – and I don’t get nearly enough of them! IN 10 YEARS TIME… I'd like to still be creating and making natural products, perhaps more bespoke items for individual customers, or advising young entrepreneurs about the joys and challenges of setting up and running your own business.
