So here we are with Christmas only a few sleeps away and Hogmanay just around the corner. 2017 has been a great year for i-on; we’ve worked with fabulous new brands, as well as our lovely existing friends; we launched our Members’ Club, bringing hundreds of readers together at events; had our inaugural Breakthrough Awards (look out for more from our winners in the coming year), and celebrated the births of five i-on babies (something in the water…).

Planning for Christmas is much easier this year. As always, I’ll be searching for the perfect gifts, and just maybe spoiling myself in the process. But I’ll also be maxing out on the i-on Members’ Club offers and benefits to help me along the way. Here’s how I plan to use it.

Where do you go for a quick escape? Drawing cartoons isn’t very stressful so I don’t often have much to escape from but I do like to go for a brooding wander down the beach at Portobello and pretend I’m a troubled artist.

How did you come to live in Edinburgh? I have a ridiculous job that allows me to live pretty much wherever I like, and I like Edinburgh. I’ve been living here for about a year. Luckily it’s a fascinatingly beautiful place and I’ve found a treasure trove of creative inspiration here. I live in the east end of the city centre. It’s great being in amongst the hustle and bustle but I’ve also got the open expanses of Arthur’s Seat close by if I get sick of telling American people where the JK Rowling café is.

How long have you been a cartoonist? I’ve drawn as long as I’ve known about pencils.

Which isn’t that long if you look at the grand scheme of the universe but if you look at a clock instead, then it’s ages.

Edinburgh’s best bits

Describe a typical day: My days are mostly spent staring at a blank piece of paper and waiting for my sense of humour to show up, moonwalking onto the page. Most of my stuff is for The New Yorker magazine, and I’m also currently writing for an animated sitcom.

Sum up Edinburgh in three words: Inspiring, secretive, joyful.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out?

The very top of the Scott Monument. I also really like Stockbridge. I’d happily buy a pound of heroin if Stockbridge told me it was artisanal.

Best and worst things about the city? Best thing: The history. Worst thing: The drunk guy who sings You’ll Never Walk Alone outside my window every Friday night.

What’s the city’s best kept secret? The really posh people have beautiful gated gardens that you’re not allowed in. But if you sneak in and then grovel in a simple Lancashire accent, they let you off.

Where in Glasgow is your favourite area? I love the west end for shopping, people watching and food. Nothing beats wandering through vintage shops on a sunny day and then taking a stroll through Kelvingrove Park.

Is there anywhere you’d like to see more investment?

Definitely in independent stores. It’s such a waste seeing units lie empty instead of reducing rent and letting some indie stores pop up in them.

What’s next? I’m working on some really exciting content for Honey Pop Kisses at the moment that involves a lot of travel.

You’re known as a bit of a Glasgow style queen. Do you feel any pressure from that?

I don’t think so. For me, style has always been about self-expression. It doesn’t really matter what other people think as long as you love what you’re wearing.

You’re so recognisable with your hair.

When did you first do it? I dyed my hair pink years ago but it has been a lot of different colours. Pink is the one that I’ve felt most like myself with though.

What’s a typical day for you? I work from home most of the time so I try and stick to

Do you have a certain ‘style’ of decorating at Christmas?

At Christmas I replace all the traditional red with pink, and add a whole load of sparkle.

I’ve definitely done a good deal of editing over the last couple of years. There’s actually a box full of red baubles, knitted robins and nasty ‘crafted’ décor hidden at the back of the garage, but please don’t tell my kids. Or the Pink House Husband for that matter – he has tendencies towards the sentimental.

Do you try to avoid Christmas traditions?

Not completely - I’ve have a few old decorations I nicked from my parents’ tree when I left home, my favourite being a dark purple glass bell frosted with white glitter snow. I’ve also always had a soft spot for little German wooden decorations and candle holders with real candles on the tree. My mother is of German/Austrian descent so my childhood tree always looked really traditional.

What are your favourite decorations now?

This years’ Amara has an amazing selection, and I’m especially keen on their ‘Kitschmas’ trend, which takes confectionery to new levels – the ice cream cones and little glass jars of sweets are particular faves, and all look delicious against my sitting room’s newly painted Farrow & Ball Hague Blue walls.

What’s your favourite thing about Christmas?

I love Christmas as an excuse to buy a few home décor items that will look fabulous

long after the tree has come down, such as this Jonathan Adler blue malachite vase and Bella Freud Art candle. Also: flowers.

I have a passion for fresh flowers and this year the fabulous florist Hayford & Rhodes has done an incredible job of decorating my house for Christmas. Its pink hypericum berries wreath against my pink front door is rather special too.

Can you describe a typical Christmas day for you and your family?

Awoken by the kids at the ungodly hour of 5am. They open stockings and eat all the chocolate within 10 minutes. Uncle iPad is ushered in to keep the kids happy till 9am.

Grown-ups go back to bed. Breakfast/festival of chocolate begins, and continues until the kids’ clamour to open the presents under the tree reaches deafening levels. Open presents.

Festival of chocolate resumes, soon joined by the festival of seasonal TV and then by the festival of Baileys, all of which continue until everyone has passed out on the sofa and the kids are free to play with Uncle iPad until well past their bedtimes. Merry Christmas!

Last year we went really overboard with stained sugar glass windows. We’ve also been welcoming my Mexican niece (who’s currently studying in Switzerland), for the past three years and she’s brought her own little touches to the house too, so we believe this will become our own family tradition. I cook most Christmas lunches; Cécile and the girls help too, Jack, our four year old, likes to join in by mixing things. This year we’re planning on having venison or roe deer as the girls love it, and we also have smoked salmon, oysters, langoustines... And my mother’s Christmas steamed pudding – her family recipe from Shetland, passed down from several generations.”

Martin’s tips for Christmas dinner

To avoid dry turkey, use a syringe to inject some of the juices back into the meat whilst cooking. Shred sprouts and sautee with lardons, very small diced carrots and celeriac, then add chicken stock, reduce, and finish with cream.

This year we’re going for Christmas cocktails at the Blythswood in Glasgow. The main Christmas meal for me is breakfast (I’m not a big fan of turkey although the trimmings aren’t so bad), while watching my mum and stepdad opening their presents. I absolutely love giving presents – I love making up bespoke hampers – and seeing family and pals. The best gifts I receive every year are homemade cards from my little brother and sister.”

LAURA MAIN, ACTRESS I’m playing Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical at the Edinburgh Playhouse over the festive period. Other than actually being in Aberdeen, I couldn’t be working closer to home so it’ll be lovely to get back there to see my family for Christmas. I’ve always spent Christmas with my mum and dad, and often my sisters and their families too. I’ve got friends in Edinburgh so while I’m here I’ll be round at their houses enjoying some home comforts.

We’ll definitely tune in to Call The Midwife on Christmas Day, it’s a new Christmas tradition for us. And without fail we’ll watch The Snowman. There are always great musicals scheduled on TV but you can’t beat seeing something live. I’m very excited about performing at The Playhouse, it’s such a huge theatre. When I was younger, we used to travel from Aberdeen to see the big shows there.

Musical theatre is what I grew up with, whether it was doing amateur dramatics and playing Annie, or visiting professional shows like The Sound of Music. My first job out of drama school was a musical version of Alice in Wonderland at the Royal Shakespeare Company and I’ve always kept my hand in.

Shrek is such a fun show, I think it would be impossible not to have a great time doing it.

I’ve never spent Hogmanay in Edinburgh before so this will be a great opportunity to take in the celebrations. My New Year’s resolution is to enjoy every moment, even if it will be exhausting at times: the new series of Call The Midwife airs in the new year, and I’m touring the country with Shrek until January 2019, while filming Call the Midwife again in the summer. I’ve always dreamt of being in a big musical and a TV period drama, so I feel very lucky to be doing both in 2018.

DECORATIONS We have various themes at John Lewis, but my favourite is Into The Woods, inspired by Ireland, mossy forests and fairies. Green and gold are the colours on my tree this year.

FRAGRANCE Scented candles are a great way to create atmosphere. I’m a big Cire Trudon fan, and I loved their rich and opulent limited edition fragrance called Melchoir. Their candles have the kind of scents you just want to dive into.

We’ve kept this tradition since I was a child, and with expanding families on both sides the gathering has grown, but it’s one that still stands. My children always ask if we’re going to the Fergusons on Christmas Day, and when I say yes, they reply with choruses of ‘good!’.

Carrie Mitchell checks into the most famous pub on Fife’s stunning coast

P

erched right by the sand on Elie Bay, The Ship Inn is a bustling pub, as popular with the locals as it is with day-trippers to the East Neuk. And now, thanks to a particularly impressive revamp at the hands of new owners Graham and Rachel (who also run the award-winning Bridge Inn in Ratho), it’s a chic beachside retreat, perfect for anyone looking for a night by the sea to blow away the cobwebs.

Best of all for me (a proud new puppy owner), it’s also very dog-friendly, welcoming our four-legged friends into the pub and the rooms. Reuben, our cockapoo, even gets his own goody-bag with gourmet treats to rival the hand-baked shortbread waiting for us in our cosy double to the rear of the building.

There are six rooms altogether, each individually designed and boasting luxury furnishings, a subtle maritime theme, breathtaking views and exclusive extras ranging from complimentary Siabann bath products, Nespresso machines and teas from The Tea Lovers’ Company. It all feels much more ‘boutique hotel’ than ‘seaside B&B’ and the

quality continues over dinner in the upstairs restaurant, where we enjoy the finest local seafood and game paired with some of the best wines I’ve had the pleasure to taste.

After dinner, we manage to grab a squashy sofa by the open fire in the pub where Reuben (literally) and we (figuratively) rub shoulders with the locals stopping off for a nightcap while out for their evening dog walk. Heading out ourselves for a breath of fresh air before bed, we might not be able to see the sea but the sound of it lapping the shore and the sight of a thousand stars in the night sky makes for a stunning end to our day by the sea.

Of course, it’s not quite over yet - in true Scottish style, the best bit is the epic breakfast served the following morning - a full Scottish for him and Finnan Haddie for me. Just the thing to set us up for another bracing walk on the beach before heading back to the city.

Emily Murray discovers urban cool in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside

As an interiors addict living in new-home chaos, my ideal weekend away involves staying somewhere indulgent and well-designed, with plenty of home décor ideas to steal. Just over an hour’s drive from London’s Heathrow, the small but perfectly-formed Artist Residence Oxfordshire is a veritable treasure trove of inspiration.

The 16th century inn is a chic country pub and restaurant complete with five picture-perfect bedrooms brimming with unique British artwork. Owned by husband-and-wife duo Justin and Charlie, the rustic-luxe hotel is one of a family created by the pair who also run

Artist Residences in Brighton, London and Cornwall (with another scheduled to open in Bristol next year).

The ‘Artist Residence’ name derives from the family B&B on the Brighton sea front, which Justin helped his mother renovate on a budget back in 2006. Taking advantage of his creative surroundings, he invited local artists to decorate the rooms in exchange for board. The idea was a hit: hundreds of artists responded; the hotel was transformed; and the Artist Residence concept was born.

And the stuff you can eat off, bathe in and walk on is at least equal to the art. The freestanding Catchpole & Rye copper bathtub in my room is a sculptural sensation (and ideal for a champagne-drinking session). The striped Bert & May encaustic tiles make a geometric joy of the shower room floor. And the lush House of Hackney floral wallpaper in the restaurant sets the scene for the home-grown gastronomic delights that await: local South Leigh lamb for dinner; pancakes with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast; and pea soup, saffron potatoes and sourdough for lunch.

But delicious as it was, for me the food is beside the point, because first and foremost Artist Residence Oxfordshire is a feast for the eyes.

I

t should be said that one of my favourite things about going for a treatment is not the treatment itself. It’s that very first step that you take through the door that marks the end of rushing around life like a blue bottomed fly, and the beginning of me time. I can literally feel my shoulders drop as I hand myself over to someone to look after me for a few hours. Rather like that feeling I used to get as a kid in the backseat of the car when the engine stopped and all you feel is a quietness.

Bob and Cloche gives me that. The former gate lodge at Gleneagles Hotel has been transformed into a beauty destination with a very firm nod to the hotel’s heritage of 1920s glamour.

With various beauty rooms – including a nail bar, pedicure room, hairstyling room and treatment rooms – the feel is classic yet opulent with contemporary ivory leather chairs and stools, bespoke golden-framed mirrors, and a striking colour palette of dusty pink, pale green and black. The cherry on top is a relaxation area, with roaring fire and velvet sofas, and a dressing room, with velvet chaise lounges and vintage drinks trolley. It’s the perfect spot to come with a group of girlfriends.

As I’m led to a gorgeous bespoke sofa for my pedicure, I do a quick mental jiggle of my day ahead to see if I can maybe stay forever. Unfortunately, I can’t, not least because I have my four-year-old son in tow. Not the ideal start to a luxury pedicure you might think but despite the ‘why’ machine to my left, the treatment starts to do its job and I start to unwind.

The therapist is brilliant- dare I say it- it was the best pedicure I’ve ever had. What makes me really love her, however, is that she offers to paint my son’s toenails as well. He is still very much in the zone of princess dresses mixed with superhero costumes so this is pretty much a highlight of his short life. He chooses one bright blue toe and one orange toe. At the end of his mini treatment he declares he wants to keep them like that forever. Which means I’ll need to head back to Bob and Cloche for the next 20 years. I can live with that.

I settle into my own booth-complete-with-TV, where I pass a lovely 30 minutes drinking hot chocolate and relaxing. There’s no discomfort at all, the only thing I experience is an unusual taste in my mouth (which is common), but it goes when the IV is removed.

I have a deep night’s sleep after the treatment and wake up refreshed and full of energy the following morning.

A week later, I’m still feeling the benefits – I have more energy, my mood is improved and I feel great.

A CHRISTMAS PRELUDE David Pollock shines a light on what’s happening in the world of music, culture, art and clubs this festive period

MUSIC Just like those office Christmas party nights, seasonal gigging has gained a character of its own over the last few years; class acts playing homecoming shows to celebrate recent success, groups with a particular party focus getting out on the road to tour, and smaller local parties with a bit of character. In the former category, few Scots have had a bigger year than Castlemilk singer-songwriter Gerry Cinnamon (22 and 23 December, Barrowland, Glasgow) whose debut album Erratic Cinematic was a big hit based solely on word-of-mouth support among his passionate fans. Tickets for Gerry’s shows will be like gold dust, so perhaps the large-scale homecoming gig by Mogwai (16 December, Hydro, Glasgow) will be another way of celebrating a Scottish success story. The Glasgow post-rock group released its epic ninth album Every Country’s Sun earlier this year, while support act Sacred Paws were the very deserving winners of the Scottish

Album of the Year Award 2017. In between both, revived Oxford shoegaze band Ride will also play, with new record Weather Diaries another critical hit of the year.

For old-schoolers, Sister Sledge (22 December, Academy, Glasgow) returns with a Christmas special set to show off an enviable selection of disco hits, while fans of new music might prefer the sound of Have Yourself a Honeybloody Christmas (22 December, ABC, Glasgow), in which the excellent young grunge and shoegazeinfluenced duo Honeyblood invite some of Scotland’s best new bands – The Spook School, Man of Moon, The Ninth Wave – to join them and get Christmassy.

Through in Edinburgh, meanwhile, charity event Sleep in the Park (09 December, Princes Street Gardens) boasts a great line-up including Liam Gallagher, Amy Macdonald and Stephen Fry, although you’d better get fundraising now to hit the minimum hundred pound donation to fight homelessness required for a ticket.

THEATRE

For something a bit more grown-up than panto in December, you’ll have to dig deeper than the nearest theatre. A good place to start is at Edinburgh’s Traverse, with Morna Pearson’s How to Disappear, 8-23 December, Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh), a quirky piece of grownup fantasy about the strange world a man named Robert creates when he decides to shut himself off from the world.

Across the road from the Trav, La Clique Noel (until 06 January, Festival Square Spiegeltent, Edinburgh) is a special seasonal show from the world-renowned circus troupe Le Clique, which incorporates cabaret and burlesque. See our fashion spread on page 58 for a better idea of what it’s all about. In Glasgow, the home of some of the most diverse seasonal shows is the Tron in the Merchant City. Once again panto specialist Johnny McKnight returns to write Alice in Weegieland (01 December until 07 January), which should repeat the playwright’s usual trick of creating as adult a panto as it’s possible to attend, while still being able to take the kids.

COMEDY

Comedy fans are spoiled in December by a series of bills at local clubs – mainly the Stands in Edinburgh and Glasgow, although Edinburgh’s Monkey Barrel is a strong new contender with packed daily line-ups across Christmas

and New Year. If you’re more risk-averse than the kind of punter who likes to pay their money and take their chance on a multi-artist bill, however, then we recommend Doc Brown: The Weird Way Round (16 December, ABC, Glasgow), with a less than reverent take on rap culture, or well-known Scottish face – and voice of radio – Des Mclean with his Christmas Comedy special (02 December, State Bar, Glasgow).

CLUBS For most, the period between Christmas and New Year is a hibernatory dead zone filled with turkey-induced sleep or getting back to work. Yet clubs keep going, and the real hardcore have some good options if they want to squeeze the last out of the year before Hogmanay.

Pulse has a particularly exceptional line-up, with the Berlin-based Ben Klock and Glasgow icons Slam (29 December, Liquid Room, Edinburgh) both playing house and techno, or there’s always the very dependable Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club (27 December, ABC, Glasgow) in the west. Before Santa arrives, if you can handle more partying, Jackhammer’s excellent techno line-up of Hans Bouffmyhre, Steve Bicknell and Neil Landstrumm (23 December, Caves, Edinburgh) and a two-night stand

by EDM star Oliver Heldens (09 and 10 December, SEC, Glasgow) offer very different nights out.

Here’s a rundown of the restaurants we’ve been dining in over the last few weeks, just in case you’re looking for inspiration.

WHITE HORSE Laura Wood goes to seafood heaven at White Horse Oyster and Seafood bar

ack in the olden days (2005), Sygn was one of THE bars to be seen in. Run by a couple of savvy young guys, they nailed the art of the destination bar. When we launched i-on they were on the upward curve and we started to work with them.

Fast forward 12 years, these two fellas, now called The Compass Group, are responsible for some of the most exciting venues on the Edinburgh food scene. Chop House in Leith and The Arches have a legion of fans who love their well-priced, consistently good quality offering of steak with a great soundtrack.

Now they have another string to their bow: White Horse Oyster and Seafood bar. They have completely transformed the oldest bar on the Royal Mile into a modern, deceptively spacious restaurant and bar offering the same Chop House vibe but this time with seafood.

And what seafood it is. We were lucky enough to sample the highlights of the menu which include in no particular order: oysters of course, four types, with Loch Fyne oysters still our mollusc of choice; perfectly seared scallops; giant crab claws (ridiculously good and easy to access with a wee bit of work); seafood platter with lobster; tempura prawns and veg, sesame tuna and monkfish satay.

Price-wise it’s very reasonable considering the cost of the raw ingredients.

The music was loud enough to create a good atmosphere but not so loud that you couldn’t hold a conversation. The staff are charming, knowledgeable and passionate, which is always a bonus. Overall, White Horse is a very welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. Well done boys from Sygn (Love, the girls from i-on).

ames Thomson’s rooftop Tower Restaurant is well-known in the city as a top dining spot but who knew they did brunch until 12.30pm daily? Certainly not me.

So, technically, I’m here to experience the new ‘healthy’ brunch options but I figure one glass of fizz to start the day sounds like a perfectly harmless habit to me. Besides, I’m celebrating my mum’s arrival in town for Christmas; so we order a couple of flutes of Billecart-Salmon, £11 each, along with a juice and a smoothie to accompany our nutritious breakfasts.

As self-confessed sugar addicts, it was admittedly pretty hard to sidestep the more indulgent brunch items on the menu (hello French Toast with maple syrup) but I finally settled on the smashed avocado on toast, £6.50, with a poached egg and crispy bacon as extra, while mum sampled the exotic-sounding Acai bowl, £8.95.

Famed for its energy-giving properties, mum’s Acai bowl might have looked and tasted like a tropical ice-cream, but the thick iced smoothie made from Brazil’s superfood, the acai berry, is one of the healthiest breakfast options around. Topped with blueberries, bananas and chia seeds, it also just about satisfied mum’s sweet tooth. We left brunch on this occasion feeling practically saintly.

heat meals are wasted on weekends.

It’s Friday; you have two days off work - cheat meals are merely adding to an already happy, content state.

Tuesday, however, is a long way from the weekend. Tuesdays are the day when you really need comfort food.

The new Smashburger restaurant has an American diner feel to it with red leather booths and an open kitchen, and a buildyour-own burger option of grilled chicken breast on a chipotle bun with bacon and cheese, with a side of sweet potato fries was a mighty fine choice from the menu.

My friend Kathleen was just as pleased with her choice; a crispy chicken truffle mushroom Swiss burger with Smash fries - French fries tossed in oil, rosemary and garlic. In for a penny, in for a pound, we shared churros and a famous handspun chocolate Oreo milkshake. What a dangerous discovery this combination may well be… The perfect cure to Tuesday blues.

NEW PLACE ALERT Bruntsfield newcomer Black Ivy is a game changer for the area. Offering tank beer, craft drinks and live music, it’s a great spot for an after-work drink, a bar bite or a full-on dinner. Personal highlights for us are the cosy terrace with firepits ready to toast your marshmallows, and a full-size table tennis table, if that’s your pub sport of choice.

GAUCHO Jo Morris deliberates the importance of provenance at Gaucho

T

he latest addition to the St Andrews Square restaurant collective is Gaucho, a luxury steak restaurant specialising in Argentine beef. The beautifully-done restaurant is a sight for the senseswalk into the small and narrow bar upstairs and you could be forgiven for lowering your expectations. Downstairs though in the wow-factor dining room, the luxe lighting and layout is rather thrilling and your taste buds receive a rush of anticipation for the night ahead. Purveyors of the Gaucho restaurants in London will already know how seriously they take the business of delivering top quality Argentine steak and the quality of the steak delivered to your plate here is exceptional. As a nod to the quality of beef in our neck of the woods, they have included Scottish reared beef too, in case the importance of provenance looms heavily over you. No such qualms for this diner. The beef was fantasticwith a ‘cooked on a gaucho’s grill in Buenos Aires’ flavour and finish that is hard to replicate, even with the much touted Josper used by other establishments. Gaucho developed its own method and it works.

A quick word about the wine list. It’s brilliant. The Domaine Chandon, an Argentine sparkling wine from the Moet Chandon house, is as close to Champagne as I need it to be. Delightful. Malbec with the steak is perfect but if you want to go off piste, there are over 200 different wines to choose from. Gaucho packs a punch.

CELINO'S Michelle Clancy enjoys la dolce vita at Celino’s

M

uch-loved family-run Celino’s has opened a second venue, this time in the north of the city, in Partick, and is a large, bustling spot for a long brunch, lunch with friends or cosy dinner. The home cooked food is a winner with dishes like arancini and calamari fritti for starters, stone-baked pizza aplenty and great pasta options. Gamberoni is cooked with a ‘just right’ kick of chilli, and we ordered chocolate cake to take away from the superb deli counter. A cafe, deli and pizzeria, Celino’s is more than just a restaurant and that’s the beauty of it.

We’ll be back again soon, purely for a taste of the Champagne sangria – salute!

nless sunning myself on a Greek island or snacking on olives, Greek food is never on my radar. Maybe it’s the association with beachside tavernas and sunshine, neither of which are likely to be found in Glasgow. Despite this, I find myself in Mezze at the Rotunda on a Saturday afternoon where photos of Santorini lining the stairs bring back happy holiday memories and the fresh decor is authentic, with great views of the river from our booth by the window.

The menu is designed for sharing, Mediterranean style of course, and offers a broad selection of fresh seafood and char-grilled meats.

Halloumi fries, £5.90, are a no brainer. Who doesn’t like them? The char-grilled prawns £9.90, are huge and plentiful. The Lamb Souvlaki, £11.50, is tasty with the charring on the meat adding that distinct barbeque flavour, and Chicken Tava, £5.90, is a stew style dish flavoured with tomato and cumin… and a great dipping sauce for the halloumi fries. For us though, the seafood saganaki, £9, is the dish of the day. A delicious seafood stew in a tomato and feta sauce that is so good, I take the leftovers home with me - more restaurants should have that option.

Mezze offers authentic food, generous portions and great service. The only downside was that it’s quiet for a Saturday afternoon, and it certainly doesn’t deserve to be.

I

’ve had many a good night out in The Voodoo Rooms and was aware of the restaurant but, until now, I had never been for food. The restaurant continues the black and gold décor theme of the venue but it’s intimate and relaxed with a combination of booths and non-fixed tables providing space for a maximum of 34 covers, so it’s wise to book in advance.

The dinner menu is compact but there’s plenty of choice; it looks like it has been created with me in mind somehow. My cousin Scott, my companion for the evening, starts with smoked duck with a walnut and blue cheese salad and beetroot sorbet, £7, and I opt for seaweed cured Loch Duart salmon with cucumber chutney and horseradish yoghurt, £7. Both dishes are beautifully presented and taste as good as they look. A spiced crusted lamb rump with Indian potatoes, coconut and tomato sauce, £16, follows for Scott. I picked the cod fillet with salsa verde, new potatoes, asparagus, heritage tomatoes and olives, £14. For dessert Scott happily devours the dark chocolate Kahlua ganache with caramelised walnuts, macerated strawberry and popping candy, £7, on the waiter’s recommendation, while I choose a healthy-sized portion of vanilla ice cream with crushed pistachios and blood orange syrup, £4.

Voodoo Rooms is a nice place to eat; the surroundings, the food, the staff all contribute to a stress-free dining experience, just how I like it.

Decisions, Decisions: We opt for the newly-opened Citizen Bar on St Vincent Place set in the sumptuous surroundings of one of Glasgow’s oldest grade A1 listed buildings.

The menu is vast so suits most palates; so vast perhaps we can’t choose so decide to share a few starters: The Citizen sausage roll, £5.95, tempura king prawns, £6.95, and spicy buttermilk chicken, £6.95.

For mains we try comforting and homemade The Citizen pie, £10.95, with chicken, leek and bacon; tempura sea bass and chips, £12.45, which offers a delicious alternative way to serve sea bass; and perfectly-cooked sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and chips, £21.95, supplied by local butcher Tom Rodgers.

A chocolate fondue is the dessert of choice, served with fresh fruit, marshmallows and popcorn, and a sociable end to the meal.

The Citizen is a lively spot so it’s great for a catch up with friends, and can easily cope with the up-tempo mood induced by three bottles of fabulous Barocco Prosecco Doc, Veneto, £26.95. A must-try in the centre of the city.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY? The jewellery is checked and displayed, and we ensure the showroom is looking its best for 9.30am. I check emails, then sometimes I’m in the workshops with the jewellers, or meetings with suppliers. My role covers an array of responsibilities including all the jewellery buying. I look after visual merchandising, new product

development and design.

But I’m a sales person first, and I spend a lot of time with clients. I take lunch at around 1pm when I grab a sandwich, or on occasion I eat out with colleagues as a treat. I finish at 5.45pm and head home to take Polly for a walk. I like to keep evenings simple with a nice dinner, a bath and TV, but at weekends I catch up with friends and family.

BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? Working with Hamilton & Inches’ wonderful team, we make each other laugh on a daily basis. Designing a new collection and finally seeing it worn by a client really makes my day.

CAREER HIGHLIGHT? We were honoured last year with a visit from Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh to celebrate the company’s 150th anniversary.

It was testament to the hard work and talent at Hamilton & Inches, and I was incredibly proud. I was also responsible for developing the company’s first fine jewellery collections that launched in 2013, and subsequently our anniversary diamond suite last year.
