What’s hot for SS18, from fashion to interiors

As I type the words March issue, I can’t quite believe it’s been over a year since I left to become a mum. It’s been a life changing and empowering experience but it feels good to be back, doing what I do and learning, like many other women, how to do motherhood and have a career. In fact, March is the official month when we salute women around the world who have shaped our lives so far as well as those that continue to do so. It’s International Women’s Day (08 March) and Mother’s Day (11 March) so in celebration of the sisterhood we chat to four inspirational women looking for change and equality in the workplace (p26). Spring also means new season trends so we’ve sorted out loads of ideas and inspiration for your home and wardrobe. Read about ‘80s style, embellishments and sheer fabrics on page 34 or turn to page 46 to find out what all the best-dressed homes will be wearing. We also have more exclusive reader events including a shopping evening with Topshop Glasgow on 15 March and an event with Chanel to celebrate their latest fragrance launch, Coco Mademoiselle Intense. Find out how you can get your free tickets on page 12 and 61.

WE CAN’T WAIT TO… The i-on team shares their must-dos this month

…warm up my vocal chords “I love musicals, but I love love LOVE Les Misérables. I went to see the movie at the cinema more times than I care to admit (might be more than 10), and my three year old knows the words to all the songs because the CD is constantly playing in our car. So, when I found out the stage production is coming to Edinburgh in early 2019 I literally jumped out of my seat and yelped. Tickets go on sale for the Edinburgh Festival Theatre at 10am on 12 March, so I have booked the day off and I will be poised with a laptop, two mobile phones and a landline.” edtheatres.com, Tel: 0131 529 6000. Amanda Southey, Business Development Manager

1

3 2 ...take in some live music “The first time I heard Belle and Sebastian’s Tigermilk I was hooked, and I’ve loved every album since (The Boy with the Arab Strap is amazing). Gigs at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall are always very special, so I’m delighted to have bagged tickets for their gig there on 24 March.” usherhall.co.uk Lucy Cruikshank, Digital Content Executive

08

…throwback to being a teen “Two of my all-time favourite TV series have been Skins and This is England (I have a thing for teenage angst), so when I discovered that the writer Jack Thorne has done a stage production I knew it would be good. On at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre and billed as a coming-of-age drama, Bunny tells the story of anxious teen named Katie who is played by Anna Russell-Martin, a 3rd Year Actor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.” 28 March – 07 April, tron.co.uk Laura Cully, Director

NEWS

4 …eat with the fashionable people “One of the trendiest, and arguably mostsuccessful, restaurants in Glasgow’s Finnieston is set to open in Edinburgh at the end of March and I can’t wait. Six by Nico has taken the west by storm with their quirky concept. Every six weeks, Nico and his team serve a brand new six-course tasting-menu, each one themed upon a different place or memory (past themes at the Glasgow branch have included Childhood, Forest and Route 66). Best of all, the price per head is only £25 (plus £25 if you want paired wine).” sixbynico.co.uk Nicky Howden, Editor

5 …burger and boogie “When Meats & Beats Festival took place last October I wasn’t convinced – eating meat, drinking beer and dancing seemed like a potentially messy situation. But friends who went said it was brilliant, so they’ve roped me into the bigger and better second edition taking place at Summerhall on 09 and 10 March. This one’s going to have an outdoor food village with more to eat, and the music decades change every hour, starting with the ‘70s and going right through to 2018.” meatsandbeats.co.uk Paul Dickson, Creative Director

Going Up LIVE MUSIC We can sometimes be a bit overlooked in Scotland when it comes to the caliber of artists that grace our shores, but this year we’ve seen Kendrick Lamar take to the stage in Glasgow (due back in August as part of Summer Sessions) and we’ve got the Rolling Stones and Kylie coming to Edinburgh and Glasgow respectively this summer. Cheers to that. UM, DEAD MUSIC Well, live music with a difference anyway; apparently having singers at a funeral is now very much de rigueur. Duet London Funeral Singers have seen a 250% growth in business over the last year, with Frank Sinatra’s My Way remaining one of the most requested songs. DODGY WEDDING MEMORABILIA The royal wedding machine is churning out merchandise already – our favourite is this offering from Emma Bridgewater...

Barometer Going Down OLD TENNERS Old-style paper £10 and £5 notes expired on 01 March, but if you still have a stash stuffed in your mattress don’t panic – you can send them to Bank of England and they’ll credit your account. bankofengland.co.uk UK TV There seems to be a dearth of decent TV programming at the moment. We’re braced for spring when season two of American hit series This Is Us is rumoured to hit UK screens – so we’ll finally find out what happened to Jack. COUCH SURFING If terrible TV isn’t a good enough reason to get you off the sofa, maybe Sport Relief is. From 17 – 23 March, the goal is for us to massively increase our daily number of steps in The Nation’s Billion Step Challenge. sportrelief.com

CAN’T WAIT TO GET OUR CHOPS ROUND THIS… See what we did there? We can’t get enough of the Chop House so we’re absolutely thrilled to hear the new Bruntsfield venue opens its doors on 19 March. After a touch of Chop House magic, the former Tribeca premises are unrecognisable, looking mighty fine kitted out in a uniform of exposed brick, wood and steel. They love a good cocktail here too so if you haven’t been already, go now. 88 Bruntsfield Pl, bruntsfield@chophousesteak.co.uk.

WHAT NEW LEGISLATION MEANS FOR SCOTTISH LANDLORDS

Special offer 3 classes just £25

D

id you know in December last year, major changes came into effect for all private renters in Scotland. The new ‘private residential tenancy’ means leases will be open-ended and tenants will have the option to end their lease giving only 28 days’ notice if they have been in the property for less than six months. Rentir is a long term letting agency that offer short term flexible solutions to landlords worried about these new regulations, and who want to gain a better yield on their property. For example, if your long-term tenant decides to leave at short notice, Rentir will (through their partnership with the premium holiday let company BNBbuddy) be ready to launch your property for short term rental, meaning less risk due to open-ended contracts. In other words, instead of losing out on a few months rent, you’ll be able to profit from the void period in-between tenants by doing short-term lets. Unlike other estate agents, Rentir offer 24/7 support for both landlords, tenants and guests. For a free appraisal and chance to discuss letting your property and maximising your revenue, Tel: 0131 341 4330 (Edinburgh) or Tel: 0141 413 5380 (Glasgow) or visit rentir.co.uk.

Hot yoga is practised in a heated studio to enable better stretching. Our studio is warm during the day and hot during the evening. Hot yoga Edinburgh offers a range of yoga styles from relaxing yin to dynamic vinyasa. All levels welcome. 2 Ladyfield, Edinburgh EH3 8EZ tel. 07387 865064 / 0131 452 8470 hotyogaedinburgh.com

PASS THE KEYS

Summer rental earnings are significantly higher on short-term lets

W

ith summer fast approaching, so too is the influx of tourists and holidaymakers to Edinburgh in Glasgow. High season is upon us – not least in August when, in Edinburgh, the city’s number of residents is said to increase eight-fold with visitors to the Festival and Fringe. The demand for short term property lets is on the increase as city visitors are looking to immerse themselves in the local way of life, have more space in the shape of an entire house or flat, and an alternative to costly and impersonal hotel stays. The fact is, landlords with properties in sought-after city centre locations can earn 50-100% more when renting on a short-term basis to holidaymakers and city visitors, than when renting to long-term tenants, with significantly higher occupancy rates during high season including the summer holidays. Average monthly earnings from renting an entire property in the city centre of Edinburgh are £2,200, and £1,080 in Glasgow*. Pass The Keys offers full property management for Airbnb hosts in Edinburgh and Glasgow at a charge of only 13%-14% – removing all the hassle from owners, keeping the charge on a par with that paid on long term rentals (typically 10-12%), and keeping the revenue made on your property in your own pocket. Included in Pass The Keys management services are: xx Listing and advertising xx Guest screening and communication xx 24/7 key exchange and check-in xx Professional cleaning xx Clean linen, towels and toiletries xx 24/7 Guest support …leaving you to get on with life, earn some extra cash and create a great experience for your guests. Call Pass The Keys on 0208 050 2818 to find out how much your property could be earning, passthekeys.co.uk. *Source: AIRDNA

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Jo Morris checks out Ba’ Bar in Murrayfield First up, what Ba’ Bar is not: it’s not a fine dining restaurant. It isn’t stuffy or hushed. There is music (albeit super tasteful and chilled) and a fantastically attentive staff who make you feel like old friends. This is a very luxurious yet homely bar and living room with a huge selection of whiskies and other spirits. The heart of the newly-refurbished Dunstane Houses is a place to go and grab a bite and hang out with friends, especially if you live or work in that side of town. The food won’t worry the major players on the hugely competitive Edinburgh scene but when a decent meal, a huge array of drinks and a fabulous setting fits the bill, then Ba’ Bar ticks the box. Very decent pub grub bistro in a luxurious setting. The Dunstane, 4 West Coates and 5 Hampton Terr, Haymarket, EH12 5JQ, Tel: 0131 337 6169, thedunstane.com.

“A WEE TRIP TO LEWIS NEVER GOES AMISS. IT’S MY LITTLE SCOTTISH PARADISE”

Jason Burnett’s

Edinburgh The owner of Jay surfboards on custom surfboards, Arthur’s Seat and his first exhibition

the East Coast after a day of surfing. It reminds me of how lucky I am to be living in such a bonnie city. Best place to go surfing in Scotland? A wee trip to Lewis never goes amiss. It’s my little Scottish paradise offering stunning scenery, white sandy beaches, clear blue waters and most importantly, great surf!

Why Edinburgh? I’m an Edinburgh native and love the diversity of the city so I’m happy to stay put. How did you get into surfboard shaping? As a surfer, I started fixing my own boards and, as I got better, more and more friends asked me to fix theirs too. I then became curious and wondered if I could make my own and 12 years ago I did just that. Since then I’ve grown as a selftaught shaper and enjoy making custom surfboards at my workshop in Dalkeith. Which part of the city do you call home? I live in Gilmerton in the South of the city. It’s a great central point for me – not too far from the city or my business. Any new projects in the pipeline? I’m looking forward to my first exhibition showcasing art pieces and custom surfboards at Custom Lane, Leith. It’s on display until 11 March so come along and have a look. Best thing about the city? Seeing the iconic Arthur’s Seat and beautiful Edinburgh skyline from afar whilst driving back from

GLASGOW_lifestyle

When and why did you move to the city? I went travelling after university and ended up in Sydney, where I worked as an eyelash extension technician. I realised nobody was doing it in Glasgow, so moved back and did it myself. I trained my sister, and in August 2014 we opened Love Those Lashes. Eyelash extensions were relatively new then, but three and a half years on we now have two lash and brow bars in Glasgow, The Lash and Brow Academy, and an online boutique. Which part of the city do you call home? I live on the water at Glasgow Harbour in the west end; all the cool spots are in walking distance. What does a typical day involve? I go to the gym, then do social media posts and go over emails before heading to the salon. We have the best team, so I never think of work with dread. Any new projects in the pipeline? We’ve developed a range of eyelash products that we’re looking to expand nationally. Best thing about the city? There’s always something happening, from events to new restaurant and bar openings.

24

“WE HAVE THE BEST TEAM, SO I NEVER THINK OF WORK WITH DREAD” Where do you go for a quick escape? The Kelvingrove Cafe is awesome – and I can take my two Frenchies, Bonte and Clyde. What in the city deserves a shout out? KAF on Hyndland Street is super small but their eggs benny and coffee are banging.

Glasgow’s best bits

What one thing would you change about Glasgow? There’s a lot of over-grown land running along the Clydeside which I’d love to see developed. Where’s the city’s most vibrant area? Finnieston is right beside Kelvingrove Park and the museum, and Argyle Street has great places to eat and drink. Describe Glasgow in three words: Raw. Dynamic. Cosy.

Head of Service Design, and 2018 Digital Star finalist in the everywoman Technology Awards, Emily Walters rails against the notion that tech is for boys

“F

rom a young age I was into computer games but as a kid in the late ‘90s I would never have imagined getting into tech because there wasn’t much on offer in the digital world at the time. I was leaning toward Interior Architecture when I came across an ad for the UK’s first interactive media design course, offering a hybrid of computing and design. Taking this approach into the tech industry made it far more appealing for me as a creative female, because it wasn’t just about programming and IT. “Women are still in the minority in the UK’s tech sector, making up just 16 per cent of the work force. A recent study conducted by everywoman found that the two main barriers preventing women entering the industry were a shortfall in support for female progression, and a lack of female role models in the workplace. It’s important that we encourage girls at a young age into STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) subjects and show them the exciting and limitless possibilities these offer. There’s a stereotype that tech is just

28

about programming but there is so much more, whether that’s design, marketing, HR, leadership or education. “Juggling family life with a career is difficult, but with the growth of technology and the tools now available it’s much easier to get the work/life balance. I’m very lucky to work in an environment where technology has superseded a 9am–5.30pm office culture. If you’re doing good work, it doesn’t matter when and where that work is executed. “This year the World’s Economic Forum of Young Global Leaders was entirely chaired by women. This is a great signifier of the change and progression from years gone by, but conversely if it’s 100 per cent women chairing the board then is that really equality? For the future I would like to see the right people for the right role getting the job. It’s a sensitive subject with differing opinions but we need to find a way of striking a balance.”

rom a very young age I loved structures. I used to collect National Geographic and pore over their features on the pyramids, Machu Picchu or the Taj Mahal. We must put away gender stereotypes and encourage our girls to not only ask questions, but also look for the answers. Encourage them to play with blocks, puzzles, and do science experiments. “As a full-time civil engineer and mother of two, I know all about the issues associated with working in a male-dominated industry. When I moved to Scotland from Brazil 12 years ago to study for my degree in Civil and Transportation Engineering, I was the only woman out of 60 students. Now I work as a Design Project Engineer but still frequently find myself on sites where the female toilet is used as storage. “The Diversity in Engineering Report from WES talks about the ‘leaky pipeline’ – the fact that many graduates from science, engineering and technology fields leave their industry at some point in their career. This applies to both men and women but, whereas the retention of men is 40 per cent, the retention of women is only 25 per cent. “In my experience, the main issue women face in the workplace is lack of flexibility and the high cost of childcare. When I was pregnant with my first child my husband and I earned the same salary, and the plan was for us both to cut our hours in order to share childcare when the time came for me to return to work. But while I was on maternity leave he got promoted and began to earn more, which meant it didn’t make financial sense for him to cut his hours so in the end I did. Securing part-time work is difficult and can mean being passed over for promotion and for a lot of women, the reality is that it’s impossible to make ends meet paying for nursery in order to return to work. “For me, equality in the workplace means embracing people’s differences while making the most of them. There is no equality without fixing the pay gap, but we also need

to secure a flexible working arrangement to balance work and home life. Giving men and women the same parental leave rights – not by reducing women’s allowance, but by increasing men’s – makes the fact that women can bear children a non-issue.”

Kim Ritchie is co-owner of PR agency Flat White Communications and founder of the Scottish Mothers Collective

“I

’ve worked in PR for over a decade. These days I have Fridays off with the kids and finish early on a Wednesday but I work every night and usually a little at the weekends. I have two children; three-yearold Charlotte and Harrison who is 19 months. They both go to nursery three days a week and my parents and in-laws also help – we’re extremely lucky to have a proper functioning support network. “Working is just part of who I am. While I was on maternity leave the first time round I felt isolated and restless, which is when I came up with the Scottish Mothers Collective - a network for mums trying to balance babies and business. Running my own business allows me to have the flexibility to work around the kids, but on the down side I struggle to switch off, and I feel ‘mum

guilt’ if I’m checking my phone at the park or when making breakfast. The guilt we feel as working mums is wild but the reality is that financially, and for the sake of my sanity, I need and want to work. “My mum has always had so much belief in me. She raised me telling me I was amazing and special, and those things penetrate. She built me up to be confident and self-assured and for that I will be eternally grateful. I tell my children to love themselves, especially the flaws. There is only one you and that’s why you are so perfect. And embrace your family to the very core. They are the backbone and the ones who will stand by you and pick you up no matter how bad things seem.” Find Kim on Instagram at @flatwhitecomms and @scottishmotherscollective

Edinburgh-based blogger, Nicola Burke, is a rising Insta-star and mum of two

“M

y background is in sales and event management; laterally I got paid to talk about cocktails all day, but becoming a mum led me to reassess my career path and indulge my inner tech geek. I signed up for a distance learning course in social media management and haven’t looked back. I’m now in the process of becoming a freelance Social Media Consultant and I like messing around on Instagram to make people smile. Until the children start school I’ll work three days a week. Having a good work/life balance is really important to me; my other half owns Strathearn distillery and is self-employed so we’re lucky that life can be somewhat flexible. You don’t realise how tough it is being a working mum until you step back into the trenches post-maternity leave. Some companies are forward thinking and offer flexible working options, but too many businesses are still in the dark ages offering very little support. “#parentingtheshitoutoflife for me means making it to the end of the day with 30 per cent of my outfit free from snot and cheese spread. It means resisting the urge to turn the air blue when my daughter Lola accidentally pees on the sofa. It means not bursting into tears when the washing machine finishes a cycle and I realise my son Lockie has sneaked a used nappy in with the load. “The juggle of modern motherhood is very real. I posted about this on Instagram recently and the feedback blew my mind. So many women have found a way to make it work for them, it’s incredible and inspiring. Conversely, many women talked about the struggle, the sensation of drowning and not knowing how to ask for help. There’s a great hashtag #itsokaytonotbeokay – when I’m having a particularly bad day, I shout it from the rooftops, it’s important to keep the conversation going to make everyone feel that little bit less alone.”

I’m inspired by... Women who have left corporations to launch their own business; changing a nappy while taking notes on a conference call. Women who have fought cancer. Women who have undergone treatment and come home broken, yet still find the strength to be a mum when they walk in the door. Women who have lost babies, only to turn the experience into something beautiful; sharing their stories with others and making others in similar circumstances feel that little bit less isolated.

Dig out your best undies because they’re going to be on show, if Fendi and Christopher Kane’s models were anything to go by. Jane Davidson’s Sarah Murray agrees: “sheer is key for spring/summer, and works especially well for evening wear. Transparent fabric gives a real edge to a demure shape in a pastel shade.” If you’re feeling brave enough to rock a transparent shift over your big girl pants then all power to you, otherwise this is a good time to layer up and wear translucent upon sheer upon transparent.

Max structure – puffball shapes, pouffe hemlines and shoulder pads – ruled the runways at Moschino, Versace, Gucci and Saint Laurent. The ‘80s vibe was prevalent at menswear shows too, with boxy suit jackets teamed with frayedhem denim and ironed-in creases. Whilst the ‘80s was all about going big or going home, the key now is to remember less-is-more. Pair a sports jacket with suit trousers for hint-of-usedcar-salesman chic. Trust us.

Men need look no further than the 1980s wardrobes of their fathers for inspiration this spring/summer; Balenciaga's Demna Gvasalia has said he drew inspiration from 'young fathers in the park with their kids' for his SS18 menswear collection, and the same look and feel was present at Vetements, with ‘dad denim’ the star of the show. Think loose fit, unfussy, straight up and down cut in everything from light to dark wash. It’s time to kick those skinnies to the kerb and embrace your inner Simon Cowell (yep, high waists are in too). Owner of his eponymous Edinburgh and London menswear stores, Kestin Hare says his new collection takes inspiration from hardwearing workwear – and you can’t really get more Dadcore than that. “It’s designed to be durable and comfortable with loose fitting silhouettes – we’ve taken advantage of the dark wash denim trend and paired our Kenmore Blazer with relaxed wide leg Victoria Pants to create a lightweight double denim look.”

T

here are some who sneer at the idea of trends, writing them off as the cynical workings of capitalism, always trying to make you feel dissatisfied with what you already have. At least, that’s what my mum says. For me, someone who has always had a fascination with the new and shiny (and a past career in advertising), trends are what keep things interesting; they’re a way of stopping us from getting stuck in a rut. Without trends, we’d all still be staring at beige walls, wearing chinos and eating liver. Or something. Armed with a combination of enthusiasm and expertise, I came up with the colourblocking trend on the next page when Houzz, the online community for designing and renovating your home, asked me about the hottest trends for 2018. Keep reading to see which other trends some of the UK’s leading influencers predicted when they peered into their brass-bottomed crystal balls.

Greenery everywhere “This has been emerging as a trend over the past couple of years or so, and I think 2018 is when it’s going to explode fully onto the interiors scene. More and more people are bringing plants and foliage into their homes – perhaps as an antidote to our increasingly stressful urban lives – and I see this spilling over into everything from plant-print wallpapers to fabric patterns. As an extension of this, green upholstery is set to become a major trend, particularly velvet in deep shades of forest green.” Abi Dare, These Four Walls

47

Colour-blocking “For 2018, I predict we’ll see an increasing number of homes sporting the colour-block look. Bright, graphic neons and bold hues will prevail, often teamed with more pared-back pastels and muted tones. As the trend gathers pace, we’ll see more confident colourblock combinations, separated by clean, graphic, ‘80s-inspired lines.” Emily Murray, The Pink House

“Over the past few years, there’s been a strong focus on a more modern and minimalist interior style. For the upcoming year, I predict there’ll be a shift towards maximalism and 80s-influenced design. We’ll see this style through mixing vibrant colours, striking patterns and contrasting textures within interior spaces. Strong wallpapers and paint colours, as well as bold objects, will be important accents in achieving this look. 2018 is a perfect time to be expressive and have fun with your interior.” Gabriella Palumbo, Flat 15

Industrial-style doors

photo by Geraldine Morley Interior Design Ltd

“As a reaction to the ubiquitous uPVC doors and windows you find in many new-build homes, we predict these industrial-inspired doors and windows will be making a comeback. The use of smaller panes of glass as opposed to ultra-modern glazed walls creates a bit more of a cosy feel. We don’t think these will just be used outside of the home. As they’re often a pricier option, we predict more of this style being used as internal doors and windows, as a feature. Examples of this could be en suite bathroom doors, wine cellar walls and porches. They’re a fantastic nod to the traditional but with a twist.” David & Mark, Forward Features

Goodbye Scandi, hello luxe “I think 2018 will see, if not the death of Scandi, at least it being forced to make room for a new sense of luxe and opulence. When the world outside is uncertain, we all want to come home to somewhere cosy, comfortable and safe. So I think there will be a gradual softening of those clean Scandinavian lines and sense of minimalism, for a look that’s more colourful, more luxe and more cocooning. Think velvets and textiles in jewel tones that edge towards a more maximalist feel.” Kate Watson-Smyth, Mad About the House

icture the scene: Scotland, early February. Wet and dark by 4pm, us with the pallor only the fullywrapped can achieve after six months of the above. But the antidote is closer than you think: Gleneagles; shimmering in the Perth countryside like an oasis in the desert (if the desert was a damp cold winter in Northern Europe). We’ve been here before but never with a child. Mini breaks with our four-year-old are fantastic but sleeping arrangements can be a compromise in a hotel room. That’s why we’ve elected to stay in Glenmor, the hotel’s luxury lodges, as they offer all the benefits of the hotel but with

more space and separate rooms. We arrive at our house, which from the outside resembles something on a smart housing estate but once through the door resembles a five star hotel. Everything is perfect. We head upstairs to the open plan kitchen/diner/lounge and try to work out if we can lock ourselves in for at least a week. The plan for our day is to visit the health club, before returning for a luxury bath together with candles and chilled-out music. I’m dreaming of the latter, but when we arrive at the health club I realise to my relief that we can all have a nice time – not just our son Luca who wants

to dive, jump and swim – but also his mummies, thanks to the outdoor jacuzzi and above average temperature in the main pool, plus sauna and steam room in the adults-only section. We spend two hours in a blissed out state, which is remarkable considering we’re sharing a pool with other peoples’ children. Back ‘home’, sharing the biggest ever bath together becomes a #goals for our future. Dinner at The Birnam brasserie is almost perfect – except we have to bring our by now, over-tired and grouchy fouryear-old. We swing by the newly done-up Den for kids, with cinema room, games and computers, before a swiftly

dispatched bedtime, giving us the unexpected pleasure of a rare evening together (which we elect to spend without switching on the TV). In the morning we fully indulge in one of the best ever breakfasts at The Strathearn before more swimming and relaxing – the sun even appears and we get to bask in the jacuzzi. A mere 24 hours at Gleneagles manages to make real life seem a very long way away. To find out more about Glenmor at Gleneagles, Tel: 01764 694321 or visit gleneagles.com.

Introducing… Celebrity dentist Dr Biju and his top treatment for perfect teeth

Why cosmetic dentistry? It’s my first professional love and passion. I’ve been practicing dentistry for almost 25 years and in that time there have been many professional highlights, but it’s hard to beat the satisfaction you get when you’ve helped someone who has struggled with their self-image regain their confidence. How can you help? I use revolutionary techniques which I have developed over the past 10 years to help patients bring out the best in their smile. I also run many training courses nationally and internationally to teach dentists these new cosmetic procedures and am often called upon to speak and various seminars and symposia. Best part of your job? I love helping patients smile. There are so many people out there who avoid smiling because they are embarrassed by their teeth yet haven’t fixed them

62

because it’s either been too expensive, taken too long, or involved a lot of drilling. In my profession we don’t just change smiles, often we change lives – and that’s amazing. Your signature treatment? The system I developed is called Cfast (Cosmetically Focused Adult Straight Teeth). It’s used in many countries around the world and changes the appearance of the teeth discreetly with minimal discomfort to the client. What makes Cfast so unique? Cfast has been revolutionary in helping adults achieve straight, white teeth in a fraction of the time, without the need for the dreaded drill. By focusing on the front six teeth which make up the most visible part of the smile, the process takes significantly less time - around three months - than conventional procedures. For that reason it’s ideal for people who need cosmetic solutions that are quick and invisible and who don’t necessarily have the time off for lengthy dental treatments. I’m lucky to have treated many celebrities and familiar faces including Holly Willoughby, Alexandra Burke and supermodel Helena Christenson. For further information Tel: 0131 322 1532, email biju@cfastresults.co.uk or visit drbijusmiles.com.

TRIED AND TESTED Functional rehabilitation Paul Dickson finds some pain relief at Rehabilitation Matrix

I

t’s not often I make a New Year’s resolution, but for 2018 I made a promise to finally address my back pain. I’d neglected it for far too long and the discomfort wasn’t going away. In fact, it was getting worse. After one of my many ‘old man’ hobbles around the office, a colleague put me in touch with Rehabilitation Matrix; a company specialising in sports injuries, sports science and rehab. My practitioner, Jonny Marc-Gillam comes with a wealth of qualifications and a client base that includes many world leading athletes so I knew I was in good hands. During the initial appointment, I explained the pain was in my mid back so Jonny set about finding the root cause of the problem. Using movement screening and clinical techniques, it became apparent that the range of movement in my upper back was restricted, and this was having a negative impact on my mid back. I couldn’t bend backwards very far without discomfort nor was I able to rotate my body anywhere near its full range. Jonny prescribed a combination of manual therapy, manipulation and exercise to get my upper back working better, which in turn, would relieve my middle back pain. These different treatments, coupled with attending

64

“I COULDN’T BEND BACKWARDS VERY FAR WITHOUT DISCOMFORT NOR WAS I ABLE TO ROTATE MY BODY ANYWHERE NEAR ITS FULL RANGE” his weekly fitness class at Walk the Talk Studios, slowly started to relieve the pressure on my back and increase my range of motion. Five weeks on and my back pain is undoubtedly better and my movement improved. I’ll keep doing the exercises and will be back for an assessment in two months Without a doubt, Jonny’s in-depth knowledge and expertise in rehabilitation is the key factor in my improvement. So, if you have aches or pains you can’t get rid of, don’t leave it, you know where to go. Rehabilitation Matrix is offering a discounted rate for i-on readers: 20% off one session (£32), and 30% off a block of five sessions (£160), quote i-on when booking. FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…

YOUNG FATHERS David Pollock talks about Scotland’s most unique young band and their headline show in Glasgow’s most famous venue

66

MUSIC

1

They’re a real Scottish band now Or they will be when they’ve played this date, at least. That’s according to Graham ‘G’ Hastings, who told BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway recently that “we’re a real Scottish band now - if you sell out the Barras, that’s it.” It was a joke based on the local infamy of the place, but Young Fathers have always been the kind of band which Scotland doesn’t just want, but desperately needs; they may have had their earliest beginnings in Edinburgh’s hip hop clubs, but the music they make defies easy classification as part of any scene. They sound like themselves and no-one else.

“Our new album is the album we’ve been trying to make since we were 14”

2

They’re a real Edinburgh band now, as well But since the beginning of 2017, the trio (Edinburgh-born Hastings; Alloysious ‘Ally’ Massaquoi, who was born in Liberia and moved to Edinburgh at the age of four; Kayus Bankole, who was born in Edinburgh and raised between here, his parents’ country Nigeria, and the American state of Maryland) have been the soundtrack of choice for that none-more-Edinburgh brand, the Trainspotting series. Director Danny Boyle, a big fan, asked to use their music in his Irvine Welsh-inspired sequel T2: Trainspotting, and they were so pleased that they wrote him the film’s key theme, Only God Knows.

3

Their new album is the album they’ve always wanted to make “It’s probably the longest time we’ve ever spent on anything,” Hastings told Galloway of the recording process for their third record Cocoa Sugar. “It’s called that because it’s bittersweet. We started out trying to make a more ‘normal’ album, and we failed miserably. But it’s the album we’ve been trying to make since we were 14.”

4

Their famous fans give them a strong recommendation Boyle isn’t the only one. Most famously, Young Fathers have been backed by Bristol’s Massive Attack, supporting them on tour and appearing on the latter group’s Ritual Spirit EP in 2016; in fact, Massive Attack are probably their closest sonic cousins. They also remixed Paul Weller’s track Saturn’s Pattern and supported him on tour, and were personally invited to appear at M.I.A.’s Meltdown Festival last summer.

5

They don’t trade on past glories One of the first facts anyone is likely to know about Young Fathers is that Dead, their debut album, won the Mercury Music Prize in 2014 (and the previous year, their second mixtape Tape Two won the Scottish Album of the Year Award). For a new artist the Mercury is often portrayed as a curse, leading to impossible pressure to follow it up, yet Young Fathers have met the challenge with hard work, determination and a willingness to create politically conscious, sonically exciting work, first with 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too and now with Cocoa Sugar. Young Fathers play the Barrowlands, Glasgow, on Saturday 24 March. The album Cocoa Sugar is out on Friday 09 March. young-fathers.com

In a sleepy French town, as the inhabitants turn one-by-one into rampaging rhinoceroses and grow to like it, the metaphor is for the rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s. THE BOOK SHELF

Behind the book Caroline Young brings the glamour and indulgence of La Dolce Vita to life with her novel Roman Holiday

Must-reads for March

The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth (Hodder & Stoughton, £7.99) The lives of four women become dangerously entangled when a newcomer moves into a sleepy suburb. Single and childless, Isabelle does not fit into the picture of domestic paradise. Ange, Fran and Essie have secrets too, which threaten to unravel their seemingly perfect lives. Out 22 March. Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney (HarperCollins, £7.99) Amber is in a coma. She doesn’t remember what happened, but she suspects her husband has something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago, this is a brilliant psychological thriller. Out 23 March. Bring Me Back by B. A. Paris (HarperCollins, £7.99) 12 years ago, Finn’s girlfriend disappeared at a petrol station while he went inside to pay. Now he has moved on, engaged and happy but an object from his past, offering clues to Layla’s disappearance, threatens to ruin it all. A suspense thriller with an epic twist. Out 08 March

I WAS REALLY STRUCK BY HOW STRONG AND INDEPENDENT THESE WOMEN WERE” Roman Holiday explores the golden age of celebrity, hedonism and glamour in Rome when Hollywood productions came to film at Cinecitta studios. I wanted to capture the story of Rome, from its recovery after the Second World War, the new wealth and optimism of the 1950s, and the excesses of celebrity through the 1960s. Inspiration for Roman Holiday came from my love of old Hollywood and a desire to tell the behind-the-scenes story of classic movies. This was an exciting period in Rome which gave birth to the paparazzi who were relentless in their pursuit of candid celebrity snaps. It’s a group biography of four iconic actresses of the time; Anna Magnani, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, and Audrey Hepburn. I was really struck by how strong and independent these women were. Sophia Loren survived bombings during the war, and as a teenager, would wait at the gates of Cinecitta studios, hoping to be picked as an extra. She went on to become one of the most powerful women in cinema. Roman Holiday is available to buy now

DINING OUT We check out two new eateries in Edinburgh and Glasgow

FAZENDA Laura Wood gives the lowdown on George Street’s newest restaurant

I

n Fazenda, we may have found our new place for a party (or rather, a celebratory lunch or dinner en masse). This new George Street restaurant is fun, but not in the novelty ‘we-dish-out-way-belowaverage-food’ sense of fun which could easily be associated with other experiential/ theme restaurants. On the contrary, Fazenda puts a five-star mark on concept dining, taking an all-you-can-eat menu to another level. The restaurant is opulent with mood lighting, leather seats and giant chandeliers; the atmosphere is laidback and buzzy with Brazilian vibes as the passadores (waiters) walk from table to table carving up skewer upon skewer of the most glorious meat, cooked to medium rare perfection. Your choice is made easy (avoiding the half hour it takes for indecisive groups to choose starters and mains). You pay a set

“SKEWER UPON SKEWER OF THE MOST GLORIOUS MEAT, COOKED TO MEDIUM RARE PERFECTION”

price (£20.50 for lunch at weekends or £31.20 for dinner) which entitles you to an unregulated buffet of salads, charcuterie, grilled vegetables, cheeses, seafood and other accoutrements, and as much meat as you desire over a two-hour period. The pace of how much, what and when is controlled by you through a simple stop/ start system; show a green card if you’re in the market for more meat, red if you’re on a break. There are vegetarian and vegan options here too but, the meat is the star of the show. Simply barbecued in Brazilian churrascaria style, the picanha – the restaurant’s signature cut – is an outstanding cap of rump, unbelievably tender and flavoursome; the cordeiro (lamb) is stunning and brushed with only the slightest hint of mint; beef tenderloin melts in the mouth and the sirloin is pretty special with only a string of fat for extra flavour. Then there’s pork belly, chicken thighs and breast, gammon, chorizo and even the humble pork sausage with a South American twist. Hell, it’s hard to know when to stop so thank goodness for those red cards – on my next visit, I might even master the ability to use them. 102 George St, EH2 3DF, Tel: 0131 215 1234, fazenda.co.uk/edinburgh

PARTICK DUCK CLUB Carine Seitz finds a new entry for her coveted list of Top Three Places to Eat Chips

W

hen it come to matters of the palate, I know a bisque from a bouillabaisse, I can sniff out a butter imposter, and I can blind taste chocolate’s percentage cocoa solids (I swear). But on the subject of chips, I am a cardcarrying connoisseur. Thin and crispy, or steaming hot wedges; the humble chip is my true culinary love. And so, after the promise of ‘duck fat fries with tobacco onions, aioli and chives’, I find myself in Partick Duck Club, Harris gin and Fevertree elderflower tonic, £6.95, in hand, searching the menu for accompaniments to this side. Partick Duck Club is the latest offering from the team behind Cafezique and Delizique, so its pedigree is good. We reason that ‘light’ starters will be sensible; salt baked beetroot with goats’ cheese cream cheese and toasted hazlenuts, £5.75, and langoustine & Orkney crab bisque, £7.95. The former’s sweet earthiness tempered with salt and the tang of goats’ cheese; while the bisque is sublime, the unmistakable heady flavour of a skilled hand in the kitchen. Across the table it’s reasoned that the mark of a good restaurant is found in the simplest dishes as beer battered haddock, chips, tartare, peas, £7.75, meets with approval. The problem with choosing my side first is that it results in a clash: duck leg, crispy duck egg and spiced pineapple chutney comes with duck fat chips as standard, £14.75, but they agree to add the highly anticipated tobacco onions, aioli and chives, £4.95. The duck is tender with crackling skin; egg Scotch in style with soft, golden yolk; spiced pineapple chutney is gently acidic and fragrant with

“THIN AND CRISPY, OR STEAMING HOT WEDGES; THE HUMBLE CHIP IS MY TRUE CULINARY LOVE” dried coriander. But oh, the chips. Golden brown and salty, drizzled with garlicky aioli and scattered with curled, caramelised smoky crisps of onion and scattered with chives. Tick, tick, tick. Partick Duck Club doesn’t do things by halves, but the quality of cooking and service makes it much more than somewhere with sizeable plates. And oh, the chips. 27 Hyndland St, Mansfield Park, Partick, G11 5QF, Tel: 0141 334 9909, partickduckclub.co.uk

COCKTAIL HOUR We try out three Edinburgh bars; all slightly off the beaten track, all serving great craft cocktails

EPICUREAN Holly Tracey enjoys stylish surroundings and top notch cocktails

F

irst impressions speak volumes and my experience at Epicurean, the uber-stylish bar on the ground floor of Edinburgh’s Radisson Collection Royal Mile Hotel (formerly the G&V Royal Mile Hotel), is pitch perfect. Greeted on arrival by a positively bouncing atmosphere, we’re shown to our private table where we dive in and order a selection of Italian salami with homemade breads, £9.50, as well as hot smoked salmon with goat’s cheese mousse and salted beetroot (a stand out), £9.50. The bar is expertly tailored to your mood with intimate private tables (ideal for dining), spacious booths (perfect for catch-ups between friends), and plenty of space at the bar for a prime view of what the mixologists are shakin’ up. The drinks menu is extensive and enticing in equal parts but professing our love for all things juniper, I have a Miel Royale – a delicious Tanqueray No.10 cocktail with honey and served with chamomile sorbet and fresh honeycomb, £9. It’s worth noting that the honey (and comb) is made by the colony of bees resident on the hotel rooftop, no less.

“THE HONEY (AND COMB) IS MADE BY THE COLONY OF BEES RESIDENT ON THE HOTEL ROOFTOP, NO LESS”

My friend chooses a Near Milngavie – Daffy’s Gin and St. Germain elderflower liqueur made with fresh Greek basil from the hotel’s EvoGro hydroponic garden, £9. Then we go back for more: a Hunter’s Rose (for me) and a Dragoncello (for her); both pink, £9, and utterly delightful, the latter a perfectly-balanced combination of Aperol, tarragon and peach wine, accompanied by a spoonful of orange sorbet. Epicurean is stylish, laid back and spot-on for a selection of cocktails. 1 George IV Bridge, EH1 1AD, Tel: 0131 220 6666, radissoncollection.com

THE PERMIT ROOM Amy Falconer discovers another side to Dishoom

D

ishoom has gained a reputation for excellent food, service and surroundings since landing in Edinburgh last year but not many know about its underground bar The Permit Room (with 3am licence), named so as a nod to the Bombay Prohibition Act of 1949 which required all drinkers to have a permit to consume alcohol. Ushered to a beautiful, dimly lit booth, our waiter explains the extensive drinks menu. We start with a Pila House Sling, £8, with pineapple, reserve bourbon and a tangy orange and lemon sharbat foam, and a Kohinoor Fizz, £8, a Prosecco-based tall drink with gooseberry syrup, lime juice and Portobello Road Gin. Super fruity and refreshing, we’re off to a good start. Next up we get in to the Bombay spirit (literally) with their Horniman’s Old-Fashioned,

£9, and East India Gimlet, £7.50. The syrup in the oldfashioned is made on site, and a smoked barrel houses the rum, pineapple syrup and bitters. It’s as impressive as it sounds. Gin fans will devour the East India Gimlet; a short blend of Portobello Road Gin with Rose’s lime and a touch of celery bitter, it doesn’t take long to finish. We round things off with the girliest of drinks; Bollybellinis, £7.50. Described as “a very pretty missy”, the heady notes of raspberries and lychees with rose and cardamom finish our trip to Bombay-in-Edinburgh nicely.

KIN Holly Tracey finds an intimate basement bar with speakeasy vibes

A

n unassuming door – so modest in fact that we walk right past it – leads downstairs to Kin, an intimate basement bar with speakeasy vibes and a smart cocktail menu. Expect to find tasty new concoctions or, if you already know what you like, bartenders who are happy to oblige (ingredients allowing) – they’ll happily style up your favourite cocktail and prove that a twist on a classic never goes out of fashion. The experience speaks to the level of skill and hospitality that owners Sam Baxendale and Jody Buchan are keen to provide, insisting patrons ‘arrive as friends, leave as family’. With a restaurant upstairs (not linked), Kin is the ideal drinking spot for a pre-dinner cocktail or the place to go when you want to carry on the party. 1 Barony St, EH3 6PD.

BIT AT THE BACK

HOW DO YOU START YOUR DAY? I take care of our two kids, four days a week, so my morning routine consists of bribing them to let me sleep a bit longer. My daughter and I then usually have a two hour argument over what she’s going to wear. It usually ends with me giving up and her going to nursery dressed as Wonder Woman.

WHEN A GIG GOES WELL, THAT FEELING AS YOU WALK OFF THE STAGE IS INDESCRIBABLE”

WHY GLASGOW? Because I honestly wouldn’t prefer to live anywhere else. Except Brighton. Or Barcelona. Or New York.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVE? Due to the work I do there isn’t really a typical day. We just kind of muddle through but it works. Randomly I do now drink a cup of cider vinegar daily. It tastes awful but nothing wakes you up more.

CAREER HIGHLIGHT? Playing the Barrowlands. When a gig goes well, that feeling as you walk off the stage is indescribable.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… Mark Nelson, comedian

HOW DID YOU GET INTO COMEDY? I moved to Glasgow and realised that I could make a living doing something I love. Then I got made redundant from my actual job and it was the only other thing I was good at.

82

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WORK? I normally finish around 11pm, go back to my hotel room and have a couple of cans while I reminisce about the ‘90s. Once in bed I’ll either watch Netflix or listen to conspiracy theory podcasts. IN 10 YEARS TIME… I’ll hopefully still be making people laugh. And watching an Oasis reunion. Mark Nelson is at The Stand Comedy Club on 08 and 09 March as part of the Whyte & Mackay Glasgow International Comedy Festival. For tickets visit glasgowcomedyfestival.com.
