I’m a summer girl at heart. The fashion, festivals, al fresco dining and impromptu short breaks, it’s my time of year and I love spending it right here in sunny Scotland. Let’s hope the weather’s not peaked too soon. And so, to make sure you squeeze every last bit out of summer we’ve got a jampacked issue with suggestions to make it an adventurous start to the season. Any new projects in the pipeline? The Northern Arrow residency will be coming soon with even more menswear and lifestyle brands exclusive to Edinburgh. What’s the best thing about the city? The picturesque views you can’t beat the view from the top of Arthur’s Seat.
How did you come to live in the capital? I moved to Edinburgh from Manchester almost 17 years ago - the rest is history. What area do you live in and why do you like it? I live in Bruntsfield with my wife and three children. We’re close to the Links which is great on a sunny day. My wife grew up in the area and the schools are good which is the reason we ended up there - I always loved living in Leith too though. Describe a typical day: I wake early and get straight onto Instagram and emails for business. I run my own fashion retail/ wholesale agency, Northern Arrow, which represents contemporary menswear brands from the UK, Europe and New York and also curate pop up retail events so social media is important. Once the school run is done I walk into town getting a coffee en route. You can currently find me at my Pop Up Shop in Sygn Bar at the West End. There’s usually a pint or two involved before heading home to the family for dinner.

… And its best kept secret? The Polwarth Tavern - the perfect local for a pint and the football. Where’s the city’s most vibrant area? I love the new bars and restaurants on Forrest Road. Civerinos Slice is always a winner and I’m looking forward to sampling El Cartel and Paolozzi when they open too. Sum up the city in three words: Beautiful, evolving, cosmopolitan.

Sometimes it’s good to just take some time out and appreciate the things around you. When it comes to Glasgow, it’s great to learn more about the city I hold dear and if, on any given moment, the learning process includes food along the way, well then, sign me up. So here I am, one Saturday afternoon, waiting at the Duke of Wellington to meet food and travel writer and host of Glasgow Walking Lunch, Andrea Pearson. The tour covers Glasgow’s history in four chapters and each food stop ties in with a different part of the story including St Mungo and the founding of the city, the tobacco and sugar merchants rounding up with the modern-day city. Andrea really knows her stuff. Her storytelling is informative, relaxed and humorous, and, without giving anything away, the food stops really laid it on for us, serving up great food along the way. Why Glasgow? I was brought up here and after spending some time living in Edinburgh I moved back to be closer to family. We now live in Netherlee, a fantastic area with a real sense of community in the leafy Southside of the city. What does a typical day involve? Once the kids are off to school I walk our two wee dogs in the local park then head to my jewellery studio. Jewellery commissions come in from all over the world so I’m kept busy - every piece is handmade which takes a bit more time but it’s totally worth it. I’ll be in the workshop until the kids come home and then it’s a juggle between mum duties and replying to customer enquiries. Evenings are generally spent with my husband and boys but I’ll sneak out every now and again for a glass of wine with pals. Where do you go for a quick escape? Linn Park is great for a muddy, head-clearing walk. The city’s most vibrant area? The West End has great shops, pubs, eats and parks.

The city’s best kept secret? The Hidden Lane in Finnieston has dinky shops, jewellery workshops and a charming cafe. Best restaurant in the city? Ox and Finch is hands down the best food I’ve ever eaten in this city. The restaurant has a great, relaxed atmosphere, the staff are always delightful and the food is delicious.

PLAN A ROAD TRIP As American as the fourth of July, the road trip is a proper institution across the Pond but you can enjoy a coastal route to rival any on the planet right here in Scotland, starting with the daddy of all routes, The North Coast 500. Beginning and ending in Inverness, it’s a stunning 516-mile circuit around the north coast of Scotland which, in our opinion, should be enjoyed at leisure, punctuated with Michelin-starred pit stops and Instagram- friendly scenery along the way (read our full feature and recommendations at ionmagazine.co.uk). There are a handful of other, shorter routes that make the grade too, like the North East 250, taking you right to the heart of Scotland and exploring just about everything for which the country’s famous; golf, beaches, heritage (the route takes in Royal Deeside and it doesn’t get more heritage or royal than Balmoral Castle) and whisky, dropping off at Speyside, the biggest whisky producing region in Scotland. Immerse yourself in the hard stuff and stay at the character-laden Craigellachie Hotel, a great spot to relax and close to the Craigellachie, Macallan and Cardhu distilleries. It’s also home to the famed Copper Dog pub with one of Scotland’s biggest collections of whisky. Make sure you try their signature drink when you’re there; a freshly juiced Granny Smith apple mixed with a good measure of their own label Copper Dog whisky. It’s worth the drive alone. South West 300 is a newish tourist route which does what it says on the tin and covers 300 miles of the South

West of the country. It’s a relatively quiet and family-friendly route with striking coastal views, taking in quaint villages and the gorgeous Galloway Forest along the way. We always get a bit excited when our invite to the opening party for the Edinburgh International Film Festival arrives at the office. It’s one of our summer milestones and, this year, EIFF pulls out the red carpet from 20 June with world premieres, new film talent and the very best in international film. “Throughout the ‘80s, there was a group of women in the US working hard to make fantastic cinema that resonated with audiences all over the world,” says the festival’s deputy artistic director, Diane Henderson. “Some of those filmmakers are featured in American Women, part of this year’s Sign of the Times retrospective strand. As a student studying photography at Napier University I worked as an usher at Filmhouse and spent many an evening engrossed in titles such as Desert Hearts, Working Girls and a personal favourite, Near Dark, all of which will screen again this year.”

Or, if surfing appeals to you but dry land is more your thing, Blown Away is an outdoor experience company based on West Sands in St Andrews. Set up by twin brothers, Guy and Jamie McKenzie, this is the home of land yachting. Basically, land yachting consists of a three-wheeled buggy with a sail which is propelled along the beach by the wind (the perfect green activity). Over the last couple of years, the fleet has grown in size; with the addition of "twins" they can take out children sitting alongside an adult. It’s a thrilling activity and most people are whizzing along the beach racing their friends within 15 minutes. Try not to be the one left behind…

eady to get your pins out? We hope so as shorts were the star of the catwalk at this year’s fashion shows. The shorter the better too it would seem. Even cycling shorts made an appearance (under puffball skirts) at Saint Laurent – yikes. hen faced with renovating and redecorating a property it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Just knowing where to start can be an ominous task but breaking it down into more familiar terms can make it less scary. The truth is, it’s not that different to choosing an outfit. Clothes hang best on a strong, healthy body and the same goes for a property: investing in the bones of a building should always be the spending priority. After that, the interiors are the equivalent of a well fitting suit: things we use every day and need to look good while standing up to daily wear and tear will do so better with a little investment. Soft furnishings and other trappings act just like fashion accessories; largely non-essential, but definitive in creating style and giving a room wow factor – this is where you can spend less if you choose wisely.

Floors have a tough life; being walked on every day takes its toll. Sanded original pine floorboards look great for a few years but, because of the softness of the wood, they were never designed to be a finished floor surface – if you’re in a property for the long haul, hardwood floors last a lifetime and gain

character with age. These days, innovation has brought so many new types of flooring to the market that the options now are endless. Walls and woodwork
Uneven walls and gloopy woodwork will always distract the eye, no matter how nice your cushions are. A skim of plaster makes all the difference to walls that are in a poor state. A good plasterer should leave walls ready to paint, making decorating much easier. It’s a tedious job, but if woodwork has been poorly painted over the years, stripping or sanding it back and starting again, can be the only way to achieve a really slick finish.
Upholstery
When buying a sofa, think about cost per wear. The average person spends three times as many hours on their sofa as in their car, but wouldn’t dream of spending three times as much. Invest in a well-made, hardwood frame in a classic style and it will last for decades. When the covers become tired, reupholstering will give a sofa a new lease of life and is far more cost effective – not to mention environmentally friendly – than sending a sad sofa to the dump.

So many companies offer budget friendly, wellmade kitchen carcasses these days that upgrading a kitchen has become much more affordable. Where it pays to really invest, is in the worktops; they take a real beating and are integral to your daily routine, especially if you cook. A
road trip around Tuscany, the land of ethereal landscapes, rolling hills, olive groves and countless vineyards, and a place that is a true celebration of food. Here are my personal recommendations of three of the best boutique boltholes with a gastronomic flair. Castello di Vicarello (pictured)is a medieval, country house with more of a castle feel, nestled in the middle of the Tuscan countryside. The property is privately owned and decked in the most exquisite array of antiques, art and books. It also has two large outdoor pools where we soak up the spring sunshine. We are treated to a wine tasting experience featuring their own award-winning organic wines and dine on a traditional Tuscan dinner of fresh pasta, beef bollito and tiramisu in the glass fronted dining room. The next day we awake to a breakfast of freshly squeezed juice, homemade yoghurt, eggs, fresh meats and cheeses and delightful homemade bread using ingredients from within the estate, something to which we become accustomed during the rest of our stay.

What I liked most about it: The setting, high up in the hills with views to the coast. Personal standout: The charming and comfortable four poster bed. Food highlight: The fresh salsa verde and homemade mayonnaise served with beef showed us a different way to eat beef. Follonico is a quaint and enchanting stone farmhouse B&B set in dramatic scenery, the vivid green hills rolling on for miles around. After a tour of the property we are encouraged to pick our room and opt for the Verde Intenso, the green room,

to match the scenery. Lovingly decorated in high quality furniture, with quirky original features that catch your eye, the styling here is out of this world. This is better than a home away from home; it’s the ultimate chill out haven. We wake early in the morning to watch the dramatic red and orange sun rise over the hills and, once again we’re treated to a delightful homemade breakfast of bread, yoghurts, meats and cheeses and fresh ricotta cheese with pine nuts and honey, made by their own bees. Wonderful. What I liked most about it: The styling. It looks like something you’d find in an interiors magazine. Personal standout: How relaxed we feel. I don’t know how they do that! Food highlight: The best breakfast in Tuscany; all five courses, especially the fresh ricotta.

Borgo Pignano is a stunningly beautiful and grand 750-acre estate on the hilltops near the town of Volterra. The service is highly sophisticated and the attention to detail second to none. There are various styles of accommodation, from the main villa to an ancient Priest’s house and maisonettes, and it also houses riding stables, a full working farm where they mill their own flour, bees to produce their own honey, an art gallery, spa and even an inhouse herbalist who makes all of the estate’s soaps and products. The soap making experience is fascinating and one of my highlights of the trip, along with dining at the long communal table and cooking our steaks on the open fire. The following day we try the Gastronomic experience where the chef serves up plate after plate of innovative and lip-smackingly tasty dishes with paired organic and biodynamic wines. Simply exquisite.

With two hugely successful brands under her belt and a talent for creating sell-out scents, British perfumer Jo Malone MBE has a passion for fragrance that’s both inspiring and infectious, as Nicky Howden discovers
D
escribed as a ‘scent maverick', Jo Malone MBE was founder of the British perfume house responsible for changing the face of fragrance in the UK. After selling the wildly successful eponymous brand to Estée Lauder in 2006, she went on to launch Jo Loves in 2011; the new name referring to experiences that inspire the creation of each fragrance. "This new brand is about memories,” she said when it launched. “It's where I am and the person I am now." Does she feel any regret about leaving behind the brand she originally created in her kitchen? “With hindsight, if I hadn’t walked away from Jo Malone I wouldn’t have been able to create Jo Loves. Do I regret that? No. It just feels like two parts of my life – one was 30 years ago and one is today. The original has my name but doesn’t bear my creativity and hasn’t for a very long time,” she says candidly. “I was [once most commonly associated with] a cream and black box, but I’ve moved on with my life.”

ecause of a lock-out clause in the sale of the original business to Estée Lauder, Jo was prevented from working with fragrance for five years. Not surprisingly, this was difficult. “It made me desperately unhappy,” she says. “This is how I communicate; it’s my passion and the only thing I do utterly brilliantly. So when I wasn’t doing it, I felt like half a person.” After a five-year pause, Pomelo was Jo’s debut fragrance for Jo Loves. Inspired by a holiday in the Turks and Caicos islands, it’s a bright and zesty scent she uses daily. “I use Pomelo throughout the house – I have a five litre metal canister and even add it to the water when washing floors.” She extols the virtue of citrus scents for the home, adding that “in bedrooms I don’t like anything floral or too heady so I have something clean and crisp like sharp orange cologne or grapefruit. In the dining room citrus notes clear away the smell of food.” It’s been far from plain sailing however, having had to endure treatment for breast cancer which had a profound effect on her ability to create. “I did chemo for a year, and I wasn’t able to smell or taste anything during that time. I didn’t think my sense of smell would ever come back but when it did, it was more powerful than ever,” she says. “I was much braver, and [the fragrance] Jo Loves Red Truffle is part of that. I thought, I’m going to create something that’s never been done before.” Understanding the importance of her trademark style, she has stayed true to that with Jo Loves. “When I create a fragrance I want people to smell it and think, ‘that’s Jo’. That’s important to me, you can still feel the thread of me in everything I do.” I can’t help but wonder if she agrees that fragrance monogamy is a thing of the past. “People used to wear one fragrance – my mum loved Christian Dior’s Diorella. Now I think people are looking at scent much more as a great accessory. For me, fragrance is my means of communication; expressing how I’m feeling, telling my story.” And what a good story Jo Malone tells.

THEY’RE NOT ALL MEN Despite a trend for bands whose name ends in ‘Man’ or ‘Men’ these days, Brisbane quartet Confidence Man’s lead singer and focus of attention is actually the incredibly sassy and amusingly don’t-give-a-**** Janet Planet, whose dance moves are choreographed with those of co-vocalist Sugar Bones, a man whose worrying Aussie abs are matched only by his fierce pout. They’re backed up by Reggie Goodchild and Clarence McGuffie, men (we presume) who go anonymous in veils. None of these may be their real names. THEY’RE THE MOST FUN ACT YOU’LL SEE AT TRNSMT THIS YEAR “Musically they sit somewhere between Deee-lite and Girls Aloud,” said music website the Quietus of Confidence Man earlier this year, and if that quote has you yawning at the kind of hyperbole which just can’t be matched, try giving them a listen. You’ll find they really are that good, and their live shows look even more exciting. THERE’S PLENTY OF EVIDENCE ONLINE TO BACK US UP We suggest you start with the live version of their track Boyfriend (Repeat) from Australian festival Splendour in the Grass last year. In it Sugar, the member Scissor Sisters never had, and Janet, looking like a punk rock Mrs Peel from the Avengers (the old British television show, not the Marvel movies with Thor and Captain America) pull some ridiculously fun coordinated dance moves with mock-serious faces which just add to the entertainment. It helps that Janet’s lyrics are an unsentimental anti-love song: “my boyfriend wants to talk / my boyfriend talks too much… he’s just a repeat / of what I had before.”

THEY’RE NOT VERY FASHIONABLE, AND THAT JUST MAKES THEM COOLER Formerly members of unknown Brisbane psychedelic rock groups like the Belligerents, Moses Gunn Collective and the Jungle Giants, the members of Confidence Man decided to throw away their previous seriousness when they moved into a flat and started writing together. While the local scene moaned about their unashamedly pop approach, the world started to take notice. “We wanted to create these characters that were outside of ourselves and be these badass people that we weren’t in real life,” Janet told the NME earlier this year about their new personas. THEY’RE GREAT DANCERS Just look at any live footage, or the compulsive choreography on the video for Better Sit Down Boy. “We actually have no idea what the f**k we’re doing with dance music,” Janet told the NME. “Things have turned out well because I think people can see the messiness of it… it’s kind of punky.” As she said elsewhere to Drowned in Sound, they’re also big fans of Abba: “We worked on the show for about two weeks and decided me and Sugar would look good in gold shiny outfits. Then we thought it would look even better if we did some ‘70s-inspired dance moves.” Confidence Man play the TRNSMT festival, Glasgow on Sunday 01 July. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH From well-established local favourites to up and coming foodie destinations, here’s a rundown of places we’ve been dining in Edinburgh and Glasgow

or reasons unbeknown to me, Kelvingrove Café on Argyle Street has slipped under my radar. It opened five years ago which coincides with my move from west to east so I’ll put it down to that. Regardless, my time had come and I booked a table on a Sunday afternoon with the family in tow. The place is renowned for amazing cocktails so it felt right to sample some, for research purposes, obviously. I went for the Death on the Nile, £8, a small, delicate, gin-based cocktail with a slight bitterness – a great pick-me-up after the night before – and a special mocktail was made for mini me, my daughter, who was instantly smitten with its creator, Barry, one of the co-owners of the cocktail bar. The bar has a great atmosphere with chilled, cool vibes. On our lunchtime visit there was a mixed crowd of families, friends and couples chilling with a drink or having

lunch. And the food is as good as the drinks and vibes, living up to our expectations created after listening to rave reviews from friends over the years. We go comfort all the way with haggis bonbons, £6.50, and chicken caesar lettuce cups with avocado, £6.50, to start, followed by the KC Sliders, £5 each, with the mini cheeseburger and mini fried chicken burger winners for us, accompanied by a side of Salted Rooster Fries, £4. What’s a burger without fries, right? A big plate of mac&cheese, £10, is divine - crispy on top with truffle oil adding a welcome kick; and the KC Breakfast, £10, is a full-on fry up and instantly declared as one of the best brekkies around. eftfield could be one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets, and, here’s why. Last summer, owners Rachael Chisholm and Phil White decided it was time for them to set up their own venture after 20 years of working in some of the city’s most-loved restaurants (Atrium, Café St Honore and Fishers amongst others). Their ethos is to support small local producers so the menu is small yet varied, with a very fine selection of Scottish beef and seafood. Inside Leftfield, it's small and cosy with a nice, relaxed vibe… I could happily ensconce myself here on a regular basis. I kick off proceedings with Shetland mussels in white wine and garlic, £7.90; my dining partner goes for crispy fried squid with sriracha mayo, £7, on recommendation. Both are excellent,

but the thickly sliced, tender squid gets top marks. We wash it down with a delicious Pinot Noir. Mains are even better with a melt-in-the-mouth, medium rare, ribeye steak, £22, served with garlic butter and the most amazing stack of homemade chips, and an almost wholesome smoked haddock pearl barley risotto with spinach and poached egg, £13 - I would visit again for this dish alone. One indulgent sticky toffee pudding and ice cream with popcorn later, we left happy and replete, singing Leftfield’s praises and thrilled to have such a welcome addition to Bruntsfield on our doorstep.
s it just me, or has Partick become a hub of Asian restaurants over the past year? If that’s the case I’m not complaining, and I’m particularly pleased with one standout. You can’t fail to notice Nam Tuk Tram Stop’s colourful and funky décor, visible from the roadside and carrying on through into the eatery where the atmosphere’s convivial. The Pan-Asian menu offers an interesting mix of Korean and Thai. King prawn spring rolls, £5.95, and gyoza dumplings, £5.95, get the show on the road. Both piping hot, tasty and perfect for sharing, but the spring rolls deserve a special mention; it’s all about ingredients over wrapper and there’s no scrimping on the prawns. Red king prawn curry, £7.95, and steamed rice, £2.50, has a lovely combination of hot chilli and sweet basil. The food is fresh, flavoursome and great value for money, and service is friendly and efficient. Give it a go.

eith’s Great Junction Street has a bit of a bad rep and is probably one of the least likely locations in the city for vegan supper clubs and creative cooking. But times are a changing with the relatively recent opening of Aurora restaurant choosing to call the street ‘home’ and it’s a proper little diamond in the rough. A small, modern eatery with simple and understated interiors, it’s open for brunch, lunch and dinner and delicious tasting food is always on the menu. We dine on a busy Saturday night with starters of wild mushrooms, spinach, smoked almonds and warm Brie, £7, and Loch Fyne salmon tartare with avocado concassè and watercress foam, £7.50. The mushrooms’ flavour is perfectly balanced between earthy and peppery with the salty, oozy cheese enhancing the whole dish. The salmon is a pretty little stack of vibrant orange and green - fresh, citrusy and moreish. For mains I order pistachio crusted lamb rack with salt baked parsnips, Jerusalem artichoke, salsify and lapsang pommes
purèe, £13.50; two thick, perfectly pink, pieces of lamb speckled with nuts, and an absolute delight to eat. Meanwhile, Laura is in gnocchi heaven with her choice of parsnip gnocchi, pickled walnuts, cauliflower stems, blue murder cheese and pea shoots, £11. The nuts, cheese and cauliflower give real depth and contrast to the gnocchi. We finish with a Scottish cheese board, £7, for Laura, while I indulge in the chocolate mousse bar with chocolate and whisky ganache and chocolate spaghetti, £5. It’s gloriously sticky with light, soft mousse and lots of yummy, crunchy textures, and a pudding that will sort out the cravings of even the staunchest chocoholic. Word about Aurora is out and spreading fast, with the place getting an excellent and deserved reputation for great value food done well. COULD THIS BE EDINBURGH’S GRANDEST BAR? Jo Morris gets the tour of newly-opened The Register Club

rand: the name kind of gives it away. You don’t refurbish one of the most iconic buildings in St Andrew Square, give it a name like The Edinburgh Grand and then make it vanilla, greige and average. So Grand is what you get. In scale, vision and ambition. In a nutshell, the old RBS head office, built in the ‘30s, has been refurbished to within an inch of its former life. Wood panelling has been meticulously restored or recreated, the traditional colours the bank used to denote levels of seniority have been playfully adapted in rooms and the somewhat austere banking vibe has been updated to something altogether more aspirational and luxurious. Most exciting for those of us who call Edinburgh home is the arrival of The Register Club, the new bar on the fourth floor. Think cocktail bar buzz with the vibe of a private club and the interiors of an upscale establishment.

The clientele is well-heeled and the service and skills are provided in huge dollops by the team from Bon Vivant and Devil’s Advocate. Entering the high ceilinged, wood panelled bar, it’s luxurious, it’s beautiful and… it’s weirdly devoid of beeps and alerts that are the norm these days. That’s because mobile phones are parked at the door. As I sip my French martini, it feels like I’ve stepped back into some glamorous ‘20s speakeasy whilst also seeing the future. Could that be because of the games room next to the main bar? It can be hired out for meetings but forget changing the layout into a conference room. This is a space for competitive ping pong, not projectors and power points. You need to pre-book at The Register Club instead of deciding on a whim to turn up. This means the bar is never overflowing and everyone has the best experience. It also speaks of the confidence the owners and GM have in this project. Their confidence is well placed. This is a grand place with grand aspirations, and I have no doubt that this bar will be THE place to be seen this summer. See you there. I then check emails on the laptop and watch a bit of Good Morning Britain - I love Piers Morgan interviewing people. Then it’s shower, make-up and out the door. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK INVOLVE? Every day is different but usually I attend networking events or off site meetings. Mornings are my most productive period so I try to cram in as much as possible. I’ll then catch up with the venues (Tigerlily, Rabble and Monties etc.) and sales team.
sell though – let’s be honest, everyone wants to go out and enjoy great food and drinks in fab venues. BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love arranging events and our next one with Nawamin from MasterChef at Tigerlily on 21 June is particularly exciting. I was a huge fan of his on the TV series.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE… My main role is to get out there and promote our seven venues around Edinburgh. Networking is a big part of the job and I really enjoy making new connections. I also handle high end clients, and ensure repeat custom. It’s never a hard
WHEN DOES YOUR DAY FINISH? I often host big events in the evenings but if it’s an early finish I’ll head for a Jacuzzi and steam room – it’s the best way to chill out after a long day. If I don’t go out for dinner and drinks with friends, it’s home for a giant bowl of Bolognese or mac ‘n’ cheese, anything with cheese really. Lights out are normally pretty early around 10pm, but I’ll always catch an episode of Friends on Netflix first. WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU’D CHANGE ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? I’d try make my 6.30am GRIT class… I always book, set my alarm and then hit the snooze button. Somehow just booking the class makes me feel thinner!
