I-ON THIS MONTH
Cover credit: Closet London AW18, closetlondon.com
Hands up if you’ve already benefitted from a quick blast of central heating and spent a fair while dreaming of your next holiday in the sun. Us too. It’s the start of a new season and we’ve got a whole load of suggestions to help you get in the mood for autumn. We’ve asked experts for their standout trends of the season and put together our seven style commandments for AW18 on page 30. Interior stylist and designer Emily Smoor updates us on the looks that’ll be making their way into the most stylish homes (p38), our music writer David Pollock talks about the highs and lows of Lauryn Hill’s career, ahead of her performance at The SSE Hydro Glasgow in November (p56), and Laura Wood does seasonal dining at its best over a seven course dinner at Edinburgh Food Studio (p62). Our congratulations go to last month’s competition winner, Kimberley RyderForman, who’s now part of the i-on members’ club which is packed with exclusive offers and party invites. She’ll also soon be enjoying a delicious gin tasting for

And that’s exactly what the Vittoria Group plans to deliver at their latest premises, the former Khushi's restaurant on Victoria Street. The style is an amalgamation of my good friend and business partner Charlie Morris and I, but also a product of our backgrounds. Both our mums were hippies. Your fashion icon? Ralph Lauren and Keith Richards. Pretty much everything I do has its roots in their achievements. Fashion trends or timeless classics? Classic style always. Both come with fries but, instead, we opted for the classic Canadian Poutine, £6.25. Chips, cheese and gravy, aka Poutine, is the ultimate comfort food. The Bangkok fries were also top notch; triple cooked hand cut chips topped with hoisin duck leg, scallions, coriander, toasted peanuts, chive aioli and honey sriracha. We completed the meal with an Old-Fashioned Oreo milkshake, £4, and rolled out a pair of very happy campers. TALKING ABOUT…
Edinburgh Cocktail Week What’s this all about then? Well, it’s a week-long cocktail festival which runs from Monday 15 to Sunday 21 October, when you get the chance to enjoy amazing cocktails for £4 and learn tips and tricks from the city’s best bartenders. Sounds great. Where does it take place? It’s all over town, at more than 80 bars, but a huge Cocktail Village at Festival Square on Lothian Road will be its epicentre. This is where festivalgoers will collect their wristbands and free copy of the ECW Guide before enjoying signature cocktails from bespoke pop-up bars such as Edinburgh Gin, Belvedere Vodka, StGermain, Ableforth’s, Poco Prosecco, Smokehead Whisky and Rock Rose Gin. What do you mean by wristbands? Everyone needs to buy a wristband to enjoy the cocktails featured during the event for £4 each. Wristbands are £6 for a weekday band (valid Monday to Friday) and £8 for a weekend band (valid Saturday and Sunday). Anything I should be looking out for? The Secret Spirits Study masterclass hub and bar on Queen Street, hosted by Wemyss Malts and Darnley’s Gin, is an exciting new feature this year, plus the programme of events throughout the week like the Pornstar Martini Party at 4042, Chivas Whisky Escape Rooms at Nightcap and Altos Tequila Party at Tonic bar. Sign me up. How’s best to book? Wristbands sold out last year so it’s best to book early at edinburghcocktailweek.co.uk

“I LOVE WALKING DOWN THE SAME STREETS AND ENTERING THE SAME BUILDINGS AS GREAT MEN AND WOMEN ONCE DID”
Dr Nestor’s
Edinburgh Cosmetic doctor and owner of the awardwinning Dr Nestor’s Medical & Cosmetic Centre shares his love of the city
You’re originally from Cyprus. What brought you to the capital? I came to study medicine in 2000. Two degrees, junior doctor training and nine years later, my senior surgical training took me to the West of Scotland. Fate and a love of Edinburgh brought me back in 2016.
Best thing about the city? The architecture and history. I love walking down the same streets and entering the same buildings as great men and women once did. Pioneers of medicine like Lister and Fleming, scholars and philosophers including Darwin, Doyle and Hume...
Edinburgh’s best bits
What one thing would you change about the city? Stricter regulations prohibiting nonmedics from performing aesthetic injectable treatments.
Where do you call home? Leith, the good part! I love the area and being near to the water. Leith still has a rawness to it, but also a bustling restaurant and bar scene. What does a typical day involve? 6am wake up. 6.30am metabolic conditioning class at Elysium Gym. Shower, shave and suited before heading off to work. I get to combine medicine and art all day, every day. I genuinely love what I do. Any new projects in the pipeline? Skin Health. We’ll be one of the first clinics in Edinburgh with a doctor dedicated to solely treating ageing skin. Using the Dr Obagi ZO skin system, medical grade peels and laser resurfacing, we’ll not only address the signs of skin ageing, but reverse the process all together.
22
Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? The Royal Observatory. There is a great spot that overlooks the entire city. It’s so beautiful and peaceful.

“IT HAS THE BEST SECOND HAND SHOPS. I LOVE CIRCA VINTAGE, STARRY STARRY NIGHT AND THE GLASGOW VINTAGE CO”
Adele Cunningham’s
Glasgow
Heart Scotland radio presenter Adele Cunningham on 6am starts, Byres Road and the best shops in town
Best thing about Glasgow? It’s without doubt the people - their kindness, authenticity and humour is unbeatable. What area of the city do you live? I live in leafy Bearsden. It’s such a quirky little village and you can get to the city within 10 minutes, so l get the best of both worlds. What does a typical day involve? My baby, Gabriella, is just 12 weeks old so most of my day is consumed by baby cuddles and dirty nappies. l feed her at 3.30am then get myself ready and head to work for 5am. The breakfast show with Robin Galloway starts at 6am and that’s when the fun and hilarity begins! Any new projects in the pipeline? I’m a new full-time working mummy so that’s a big project. I’m also hosting the charity event Global’s Make Some Noise at the end of the month. Brian McFadden from Westlife and Keith Duffy from Boyzone will also be joining. Where’s the city’s most vibrant area? The West End of Glasgow, Byres Road. There’s something for everyone and the people are very cool and chic.
28
Worst thing about the city? The one-way system, I’m forever getting tickets and even Google Maps gets confused. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? I love the Botanic Gardens. It’s so peaceful and wee Gabriella loves all the pretty coloured flowers.
Glasgow’s best bits
What’s the city’s best kept secret? It has the best second hand shops. I love Circa Vintage, Starry Starry Night and The Glasgow Vintage Co. Sum up Glasgow in three words: Cultural, vibrant, fun.

SO
THIS SEASON… We’ve talked to the experts to put together these seven style commandments that’ll keep you looking on trend this autumn.
1
TRUST YOUR ANIMAL INSTINCT
The AW18 catwalks of Victoria Beckham, Diane Von Furstenberg and Tom Ford were awash with zebra stripes and leopard prints. Now they’re all over the high street in classic neutral tones and multi-coloured statement making versions too. “Be bold and clash different animal prints or nod to the trend with accessorises,” advises personal stylist Laura Russell of Satisfashion. “Leopard print woollens, trench coats and animal print skirts are all great additions to your winter wardrobe - dress the skirt up with a polo neck and knee length boots on cold days. A real winning colour combo for me would be leopard print and burgundy,” adds Laura. Anita Ross, personal shopper at Jenners, agrees it’s the season for animal print. “Invest in an animal print coat or trainers (or both), to lift even the simplest outfit combination. If you’re not brave enough for animal print clothing, a scarf or bag looks fantastic too.” FROM L-R: Aloud boots, £85 at office.co.uk; zebra print bag, Nine by Savannah Miller, £55 at Debenhams.com; Georgiana Dress, £159, and Oxford saddle bag, £189, hobbs.com; pony buckle belt, £24, Topshop.com; Audrey print cami, £59, and sports pant, £79, at mintvelvet.co.uk (main image); Free People Kate leopard print faux fur jacket, £230, harveynichols.com; Heighton zebra print stilettos, £69 at office.co.uk

SHINE IN METALLIC

FASHION
As seen on the catwalks of Balmain and Christopher Kane, this season’s metallic trend is cool and futuristic. Look for silver hues and wear it head to toe for high glamour. A blazer can look great too, recommends Sarah Murray of Jane Davidson. “The metallic blazer from Diane Von Furstenberg or Smythe looks great dressed down with jeans and a white tee or in the evening with leather trousers and heels. It’s a fantastic nod to ‘80s power dressing.” FROM L-R: Bag, £25.99, zara.com; Diane Von Furstenberg metallic blazer and Smythe Film Fest Blazer, £629, both at janedavidson.co.uk; foil T-shirt, £29, topshop.com; Airfield jeggings, £222, airfield.at

SAY ‘YES’ TO THE POWER SUIT
The suit is sticking around this season. For a tailored style that’ll take you from day to date night, try the Part Two Biking Red Kylie blazer and Clea pants, available at Biscuit Clothing. It looks smart worn separately or as a set; just swap trainers for heels come evening. “Plaid, Prince of Wales heritage or tartan checks are all key patterns for autumn and a two-piece suit is a great way to spruce up your workwear,” says personal stylist Laura Russell. For off duty style, Lisa Taylor of Epitome of Edinburgh recommends a two piece from Aiayu: “Cord and matching suits are two of the biggest trends this season and you can combine both with this two piece from Aiayu. Style with a chunky hiking boot from Grenson, perfect for autumn/winter.”

Checks are back in a big way for men. “Think plaids and tartan - and don’t be afraid to double up,” says Nigel Pashley, owner of Frontiers Man. “One of our bestsellers is the Oliver Spencer Patch Work shirt which can be worn under a long plaid overcoat to look bangon trend this season. Or you can incorporate the pattern through a statement jacket from YMC, knitwear or tartan trousers.

FASHION
Clever layering is key to any well-dressed man’s wardrobe. Get it right and it’ll carry you from dusk till dawn, regardless of the weather. “Investing in a great jacket is crucial,” advises Jenners’ personal shopper, Anita Ross. “Depending on your style that could be anything from a bomber to a padded jacket or leather jacket. Layer your jacket with a shirt and blazer or t-shirt and open shirt combination.” For a high quality overcoat to last you a lifetime, Shearling is always a good option. For inspiration check out Acne and Belstaff.

Louis Vuitton led the way on the AW18 catwalks and now the high street is full of rich, warm shades of brown. A sharp camel coloured coat can work the trend well or you could make a statement and go head-totoe in a suit. Just make sure you add some different tones to mix it up and add depth to the ensemble.

GO FOR GREEN
“Forest green is the colour of the season. It’s muted, timeless, and a great colour for trans-seasonal dressing,” says Sarah Murray of designer womenswear boutique Jane Davidson. “The Roland Mouret Taylor dress in Hunter Green is a flattering style and shade that suits most complexions. Smythe has also produced its famous Duchess jacket in this colour too.” Shades of green are also at Biscuit Clothing. “Dark green is a trend we’re seeing in the new collections,” says owner, Amanda Mitchell. “From the velvet pant suit by French brand Soeur to Yaya blouses, American Vintage T-shirts and Chinti & Parker cardigans, it’s all very wearable and chic.”

T
wice a year I have this insatiable urge to sort my house out: a purge of ignored piles, reorganisation and endless trips to charity shops. The seasons of transition, spring and autumn, seem to instigate this need in me. They say that a change is as good as a holiday, and with the summer holidays now a distant memory, sometimes an interior re-shuffle can be just the refreshment you need. Here is my guide to this year’s autumn trends.
While the Scandi trend for simple, light and sparing interiors has reigned supreme for the last decade, the new Art Deco has been stealthily creeping from the wings towards centre stage. Curved sofas, velvet and brass, intense colour and fringing are all symptoms of Art Deco fever.
Woven wicker pendant, from £217, lovefrankie.com
There is something incredibly glamorous about a curved sofa – it changes the dynamics of a room, welcoming you with open arms and diminishing harsh angles with alluring lines. Graham and Green have brought this look to the high street with their fabulous ‘Tiffany’ sofa, available in a range of fabrics, including stain-guarded velvet so you don't panic when you accidentally spill your Cinzano. Or you could try the Hetherington pouffe by made.com which is a punchy little number. With its brass-clad base and velvety fabric, this curvy accent piece comes in three colours with a surprisingly low price tag. £99 at made.com

Gosh, haven’t we come on? I love this brave new world of interiors that is embracing maximalism, vibrant colours and frilly bits. I am from the ‘Measured Maximalist’ school, where I love eclecticism and colour but applied with care. I think it’s always wise to have the odd irreverent piece in a room, a microdose of OTT - after all we mustn’t take ourselves too seriously. These fringed pouffes by Italian maestra, Lorenza Bozzoli, are a perfect example. While I can imagine they would quickly resemble some sort of tangled, Rasta Minion in my house, thanks to the ever-respectful creatures who live there, they would no doubt be a source of joy and conversation as long as they survived. lorenzabozzoli.com For a more practical option, those purveyors of classic yet characterful design, Soho Home, have designed the Rizzo Chair. This traditional armchair in bold orange velvet has an understated skirt of hard-wearing bullion fringe. Lighting is the perfect way to update a room with a single investment. The Rothschild & Bickers ‘Vintage Light’ features freeblown glass in jewel tones for a sultry take on granny chic. Fast forward a few decades to the gold plated ‘Wink’ pendant by Masquespacio, this achingly cool yet understated piece offers fresh perspective on Modernist shapes.

TIP!
Bullion fringe is widely available and a great way to update your furniture without breaking the bank. It can easily be applied at home with a glue gun and tacks – speak to your local upholsterer if you need a helping hand.

I can’t quite believe that I am writing this but there is a new colour in town - and I think I like it. I am talking about purple! Purple to me has long been associated with Changing Rooms circa 1998 and its over-ruffled star, Laurence Llewelyn Bowen. 20 years (gasp) later and we are only just recovering. While I am not for a minute suggesting that you join Lawrence on the revolving bed and paint your walls Quality Street purple, we cannot tarnish all purples with the same brush. This much-maligned colour has a lot to offer; gentle mauves, fresh lilacs and soothing lavender work beautifully, especially in slubby linen, vintage velvet and soft wool.

Gebrueder Thonet Vienna Loie and Allegory desk at cataloginteriors.com
The resurrection of this timeless material is one of my favourite trends of the last few years. Cane is a beautiful natural fibre derived from the rattan vine. These durable fibres are woven together in a lattice design to create strong but incredibly comfortable seats, headboards and delicate looking screens. What was once a very traditional material is now being re-imagined in contemporary designs. Gebrueder Thonet Vienna’s ‘Loie’ lounge chair and ‘Allegory’ desk, are a brilliant example of its new look. Ikea is also championing natural fibres and their Hjartelig rattan headboard is an excellent budget-friendly option to bring the look home. If you aren’t ready to commit to a larger piece, why not take baby steps and embrace the ever-growing wave of rattan lighting? It produces a lovely soft light and adds that natural texture without breaking the bank. Matilda Goad’s scalloped lampshade showcases this natural fibre in a traditional yet playful design, while for a more earthy, artisan feel, the woven wicker shades by Love Frankie (see page 38) will give real warmth and character to a room.
42
A WORD TO THE WISE I can’t pretend I don’t love seeing the emerging looks but we have to remember that the very definition of a trend is that it is transient. The ever-evolving nature of design is important; it keeps designers energised and forces creativity and risk-taking. However, unless you fall head over heels in love with a trend, remember the rule – ‘invest in timeless, accessorise with trends’. So while that lilac, 1930s fringed sofa might seem like a brilliant idea now, will you still be in love in 2020... or just regretting a one night stand?

A GLASS ACT A
sk any homeowner what they’d like more of, invariably space will top the list. We want more, and we want it to enhance our lifestyle. And the new glass extensions do just that. Back in the 90s and 00s, the conservatory was the ultimate accessory, but the last few years has seen something of a shift. No longer satisfied with white framed boxes offering sub-zero temperatures from October to March and greenhouse conditions in June and July, the conservatory has evolved into the contemporary Instagram-friendly Glass Extension. These extensions turn the ‘extra room’ into something altogether more glamorous and the architectural challenge of connecting a house to the outside is happily met. In a city like Edinburgh, which has more listed buildings than anywhere else in the UK, you might expect modern design to be frowned upon but in fact the opposite is true. Building a contemporary glass extension in a contrasting material onto an historic building
44
is more subtle than traditional conservatories because it allows the existing structure to be seen more easily thanks to the high-grade glazing. This October, i-on readers are invited to the exclusive opening event of Sidey in Edinburgh where you can learn more about these extensions as well as renovating traditional properties. Sidey is Scotland’s one stop shop for well-designed glass extensions and prides itself on bespoke innovations that transform your home. Their extensions give you more space to live, entertain and relax. Following on from the success of their Perth and Dundee showrooms, Sidey brings its quality range of windows, doors and conservatories to Edinburgh, with a brand new showroom, just around the corner from Ikea on Pentland Industrial Estate. Join i-on for the exclusive launch weekend and get the most from your glass extension.

Three reasons why we love a glass extension: 1 LIGHT Scotland doesn’t enjoy the best daylight in the world but when we do get it, we want to enjoy it. Even if it’s raining. A glass extension lets the light in without braving the elements. 2 HAPPY GARDEN VIBES Glass extensions are a bridge between the house and the garden meaning you benefit from indoor outdoor living. You are closer to the garden which ups the feelgood factor significantly. 3 DESIGN STATEMENTS Whether you’re looking for a modern design statement or a gentle addition to the back of your house, there’s a style to suit every taste with different colours, configurations and innovations.

the easy way out Jo Morris gets on her e-bike and falls for Jersey
B
efore my trip to Jersey I knew exactly what it would be like. As any selfrespecting person who grew up in the '80s knows, Jersey is a hotbed of crime, lust and passion. It's a little bit French but also very English. People drive around in swanky open top cars and there are only 25 people who actually live on the island. But it would seem that BBC TVs Bergerac might not have been an entirely accurate portrayal of this island. For one thing, it's really busy and traffic jams around the main hub of St Helier are de rigeur in a country whose car ownership was once the highest per head in the world. Our trip, however, was not to relive the heady heydays of John Nettles but to duck out of Edinburgh for a
46
long weekend and hit up some guaranteed sunshine before the long winter months. At only five miles wide and nine miles long, Jersey has been described as a cyclist’s paradise. And it is, whatever your level of fitness and stamina, mostly due to the availability of the wondrous e-bike. You see, Jersey is an island of much beauty, and even more hills - fabulous for hardcore/ semiserious cyclists but not so for the biking at leisure brigade. In case you haven’t heard of them, electric bikes or e-bikes are basically a motor assisted ride. They make cycling easy and, for me, these babies turned Jersey into the promised land. We cycled from our base in St Helier, along the seafront to St Aubin, a pretty harbour

village with some of the best restaurants on the island. From there we headed over to St Brelades, Bay. This huge sweeping expanse of beach and sea is breathtaking and about one mile down a very steep hill. We whooped as we freewheeled down and, at the bottom, I gave my little e-bike a hug as I realised that a quick flick to Turbo would get me back up to the top with no tears and not even a teeny bit of sweat. Our destination was St Ouens, Bay which is the best beach on the island we were told. With cycle paths most of the way, it was a beautiful ride. With big grins on our faces, we found ourselves a stunning surfers’ beach and hung out in the sun eating surf and turf until mid-afternoon. We arrived back at our hotel in time for a few sundowners before dinner and reflecting on our trip. Jersey is something of a conundrum. It's British although it's much closer to France, (which you can see in the architecture and hear in the accent). It's rural but St Helier is one of the key financial centres in Europe, it's small but it still packs in a whole load of diverse cycle routes. It’s sunny when the rest of Britain is mired in rain. And for all those reasons, I will most definitely be back for more.

COMPLETE
CONFIDENCE “FOR ME, CONFIDENCE IS ALL ABOUT FEELING GREAT WITHIN YOURSELF. BUT WHAT YOU WEAR AND HOW YOU LOOK ON THE OUTSIDE IS ALSO A HUGE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO HOW YOU FEEL INSIDE.”
One of TVs most popular presenters, Carol Smillie, talks to i-on about her career, social media and how she feels about getting older.
Your career has been a varied one. Model, presenter, entrepreneur and now humanist celebrant. Did you always have a strong self-belief in your abilities? I think a certain amount of self-belief helped in the beginning, but the rest was ‘winging it’. We all have feelings that we’re ‘getting away with it’ and any day now, the tap on the shoulder is coming. So much of life is smoke and mirrors. If you exude confidence, others will buy into it. Does getting older shake your confidence? Yes, menopause, body changes, the ageing process, it all sucks really. But I’m lucky. I’ve been married for 27 years to a man whom I adore, is my best friend, and who still treats me like a queen. I wouldn’t be quite so confident without that. Being loved is everything, isn’t it? Do you think social media helps or damages how we feel about ourselves? I am SO glad social media wasn’t around when I was at the height of my career. I cannot imagine the horror of reading anonymous trolls saying you’re so fat/old/ugly/ stupid on a daily basis. I’m so glad my kids are almost through the horror of social media controlling their lives and can see it now for what it really is, but I worry about younger girls who are so influenced by it all. What advice would you pass onto your children about confidence? Don’t let anyone body shame you or tell you that you cannot be whatever it is you want to be. If you are happy inside, the rest of it will follow naturally. Don’t take yourself too seriously and surround yourself with people who love you and would be there for you in a crisis.

CAROL SMILLIE TV PRESENTER
What does confidence mean to you? For me, it’s all about feeling great within yourself. Knowing that you feel comfortable in your own skin and don’t need anyone else around you. But what you wear and how you look on the outside is also a huge contributing factor to how you feel inside. I’m no different to any other woman; weight gain, skin outbreaks, varicose veins, becoming ‘invisible’ as you get older, are all contributing factors, but these feelings generally pass fairly quickly, thankfully. I find a noninvasive treatment, new make-up, haircut or outfit, can make a world of difference. For years I suffered from rosacea. I went to Face & Body where they analysed my skin under UV light, and asked me to make some dietary changes (no butter or full fat milk) and gave me some skin creams, and hey presto, I was finally free of rosacea. I’ve since become a regular, and they helped with thread veins, and laser hair removal as well as pigmentation removal on my cheek.
’m a longstanding fan of Gleneagles. I’ve been there for lunch dates, brunch dates, spa breaks, celebrations and even my mini-moon so, for someone who feels like they ‘know’ the hotel, I was pleased to finally visit Bob & Cloche, its newest salon which opened last autumn. Located in the former gate lodge within the resorts grounds, it’s a pretty beauty destination complete with open log fires and luxe furnishings, a state-of-the-art nail bar, pedicure room, hair salon and treatment rooms. It’s a glamorous and intimate salon away from the hustle and bustle of the hotel and feels very exclusive. Enticed by the promise that my skin would instantly glow, I booked the Oskia Signature Glow Facial which combines anti-ageing and glow-inducing techniques to illuminate and hydrate the skin. An indulgent 75 minutes of me-time later (the expert shoulder massage at the end was sublime) and I felt utterly relaxed, rejuvenated and in love with the award-winning Oskia skincare range. Recommended. Bob & Cloche offers treatments from hair services and make-up application to bespoke anti-aging facials and a nail bar. Four reasons why you should try pilates: 1. YOU WILL REDISCOVER YOUR ABS Vital for holding your posture correctly, abs start to reappear after only a few classes. It’s low impact but it works.
2. YOU CAN START NOW Nobody ever woke up wanting to feel the burn but sign up for a beginner class and you’ll feel like a superstar.
3. YOUR MIND WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT You need to concentrate during a pilates class. Focusing on only one thing is refreshing and you leave the class with a clear head.

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…

20 Years on from her mighty The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album, its creator brings it back to the stage following a turbulent career. Here, David Pollock reveals all

“IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE WHAT HILL HAS RIDING ON THIS, BUT FOR HER FANS’ EXPECTATIONS AND MEMORIES THERE’LL BE A PRICE TO PAY IF IT ISN’T UP TO SCRATCH”

… AND HER ALBUM, THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL, WAS ONE OF THE DECADE’S BIGGEST ALBUMS
Or certainly one of its most critically acclaimed. After the Fugees split when Hill’s tumultuous relationship with Jean ended, she met and had a child with Bob Marley’s son Rohan. Recorded in Jamaica’s Tuff Gong studio – a place synonymous with Marley – the album broke records for a female artist and took home an armful of Grammys. Tracks like Doo-Wop (That Thing) and Everything is Everything remain staple influential hits of the era, and the album reaffirmed that Hill was an exceptional rapper, singer, songwriter and producer.

SHE’S ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL IN A BIG WAY
Usually when an artist pulls up a 20th anniversary tour of an album which made them famous, it might be because the work they’re doing now just doesn’t measure up to the olden days. That’s certainly true of Lauryn Hill, but not because she’s still plugging away at music with ever-diminishing returns. That 1998 record The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a classic which is still loved to this day, yet Hill’s departure from music from most of the intervening period has only fed her legend.
IN CASE WE FORGET, SHE WAS ONE OF THE '90S BIGGEST ARTISTS
A middle-class girl from New Jersey, Hill first started playing music as a teenager with local friends Pras Michel and Wyclef Jean. Initially a trained actor - who appeared in the films Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and Steven Soderbergh’s King of the Hill – Hill became properly famous after she, Jean and Michel renamed their band the Fugees (short for ‘refugees’). In particular, their 1996 second album The Score hit big, featuring their cover of Killing Me Softly and signature tracks like Fu-Gee-La and Ready or Not.
AFTER WINTER MUST COME SPRING
Following a not very well-received 2002 MTV Unplugged appearance, Hill’s life and career appeared to part company with one another. While she and Marley had five children before separating, she publicly rejected many parts of the music industry, only touring and recording sporadically. A reunion with the Fugees was short-lived and not successful, and in 2013 she was imprisoned for three months for tax fraud.
THIS TOUR IS A COMEBACK WITH A DIFFERENCE
It’s hard to imagine what Hill has riding on this, given what the last 20 years of her life have involved, but for her fans’ expectations and memories there’ll be a price to pay if it isn’t up to scratch. Yet for many, just being there will be enough – to be able to say that they’ve seen one of the most unique and unquestionably talented artists of her generation in the flesh. Lauryn Hill plays a date in her 20th anniversary tour of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill at the Hydro, Glasgow, on Friday 23 November. mslaurynhill.com

The Edinburgh Festival is done for another year, and across the country things are starting to happen again. Here are a few of the best events you can enjoy this month
CYRANO DE BERGERAC With the Citizens Theatre closed for refurbishment, their productions have moved up the road to the Tramway – and to ensure people know they’re still around, they’ve devised an attentiongrabbing new version of Edwin Morgan’s Scots translation of Cyrano de Bergerac, with costumes by fashion designer Pam Hoff and a lead performance from Brian Ferguson. On the agenda this month‌ Roasted langoustine with spring onion and garlic butter - sounds delicious, right? His latest restaurant, Southside Scran, is also only weeks away from opening. EAT EDINBURGH Introducing the new places you’ll want to try this month
EDINBURGH FOOD STUDIO Laura Wood tastes the wonders of Scotland’s larder
L
et me tell you the story about the Edinburgh Food Studio. It opened in November 2015 as a research hub and a place to host one-off cooking collaborations and workshop evenings with guest appearances from international chefs. To date, its owners, husband and wife team, Ben Reade and Sashana Souza Zanella, have clocked up oodles of food experience across the spectrum, studying, researching and cooking their way to their premises on Dalkeith Road where they are redefining eating out as we know it. This pair lives and breathes good food and wine and it shows in the seven-course tasting menu, £50, which is there to be enjoyed by dinner guests from Wednesday to Saturday evenings. They’ve recently been joined in the kitchen by head chef, James Murray, whose creative energy and ethos matches the duo’s. They put together the purest, freshest, most natural of Scottish produce available on the day, cooking it simply but spectacularly to let the ingredients shine. Guests take a leap of faith in as much as they don’t know what’s on the menu and, dietary requirements aside, dinner choices are made for you and are entirely down to chef’s creativity. But you’re in the chef's safe hands. Dinner is interesting and innovative pickled, preserved, fermented, crumbed, marinated… you name it, it’s all there and despite the simple presentation, manages to make a bold, confident statement. There’s no pomp and ceremony. We sit at a no fuss, candlelit, communal table and are served samphire and lemon; Isle of Wight

“DINNER CHOICES ARE MADE FOR YOU. BUT YOU’RE IN THE CHEF'S SAFE HANDS.” tomato, rye bread, anchovy and mustard leaf; a delicious corn on the cob (just because) with fermented chilli butter and prawn crumb; girolles and meadowsweet; mackerel and turnip; Shetland hogget four ways with braised lettuce; and finish with cherries, blackcurrant and colonuts; raspberries, meadowsweet and oats; and almond cake. Progressive, natural and downright sublime. Edinburgh Food Studio’s approach to dining may not appeal to everyone but if you’re in the market for next level dining, this is the place to go. We’re there to experience and discover food and learn from Ben about the produce and cooking, and the wonderful wines and drinks he pairs with each course as it leaves the kitchen. Is it acceptable to have a seven course dinner at least four nights of the week..? I feel my world would be a whole lot better for it. Edinburgh Food Studio is also open for brunch on Sundays and lunch, Thursday - Saturday. 158 Dalkeith Rd, EH16 5DX, Tel: 0131 258 0758, edinburghfoodstudio.com

SEEDS OF THE SOUL Sarah Howden discovers the joy of going vegan
TWO MORE PLACES WORTH TRYING…
A
s I become more conscious about my meat, fish and dairy consumption, I’ve become a fan of the city’s vegetarian and vegan destinations. And Seeds for the Soul is a great vegan café in the heart of Bruntsfield that puts plant-based menus on the map. Breakfast, lunch and sweet treats are all served with the emphasis on good food, using organic ingredients where possible, and making everything from scratch on the premises. Pancakes, a full cooked breakfast, hearty soups, tostini, soul bowls and vitamin-charged smoothies are all available, as well as freshly made cakes and scones. We popped in for lunch during the week and it wasn’t long before all the tables filled up. It was hard to choose from the menu and in fear of food envy we eventually opted for a few items to share. The Yummy Toast, £4.50, of avocado on sourdough was delicious; the red onion, tomato and hemp seeds a nice contrast to the smooth avocado. The Vegan Poutine, £6.95, a feast of chips, cheese, seitan (vegan meat), lettuce, jalapenos and salsa was tasty and filling. To finish, we shared the homemade sweet pancakes with fresh fruit, cinnamon and coconut, £5.85, - definitely worth the experience. The food here is so clean, fresh and tasty that it’s easy to forget the menu is 100 per cent vegan. Seeds for the Soul is on a mission to help make a difference to the planet starting with the way we eat. And, unless you’re a die-hard carnivore, it’s a great place to pop in for a satisfying, quality bite to eat in Bruntsfield. 167 Bruntsfield Pl, EH10 4DG, seedsforthesoul.co.uk

Located in the former Parlour Bar on Duke Street, Nauticus champions Scottish produce where possible with over 100 different types of whisky, as well as locally produced gin and Scottish beers.

DOWN AND DIRTY Nicky Howden discovers the perfect Martini at Dine’s masterclass
T
he Martini is probably the most iconic cocktail of all times. Clean, understated and smooth, it dates back to the mid-1800s but claimed its status as James Bond’s drink of choice – shaken, not stirred. As simple as it is, there’s so much more to a Martini than how you mix gin (or vodka) with vermouth. And as soon as you taste your first cocktail on the Dine Martini Experience, you’ll understand that. This private masterclass takes place in the comfort of the leather chesterfields in the bar area at Dine and our drinks expert for the evening is bar manager, Alessandro Borelli, a knowledgeable gent with a clear passion for Martini. He takes us on a tasting experience revealing the secrets behind the perfectly balanced Martini in all its variations, from the sweet Martinez to the potent Duke’s Martini, and shares stories that shaped the course of the drink’s history along the way. At the end of the two-hour masterclass, you step behind the bar and create your own signature drink. Mine is a twist on the espresso Martini and I’ll be rolling out the recipe at our next dinner party.

The Martini Experience is an education without information overload, offering the chance to learn the history behind different Martini cocktails, discover luxury spirits and taste four perfect serves – plus your own creation. A fun interactive evening that’ll leave you wanting more… The Martini Experience at Dine is £30 per person and available Monday to Saturday. “I’M AN EARLY RISER. ALTHOUGH IT IS GETTING SLIGHTLY LATER AS I GET OLDER”
I WAKE UP… …at 6.30am, I’m an early riser. Although it is getting slightly later as I get older. I then shower, do some pampering and blow-dry my hair, of course. For breakfast I have coffee, Special K and bananas.
THE BEST PART OF MY JOB… ...when a client says ‘yes’ to a perfect holiday it makes my day. Also I get to visit many of the world’s most beautiful and interesting destinations including Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. MY CAREER HIGHLIGHT… …is winning the Agent Achievement Award 2018 for Best Small Agency in Scotland.

I STARTED THE BUSINESS… …in 2001 when I sold my house to fund my own business, Jimmy Martin Travel.
10 YEARS TIME… …I’d like to be retired, healthy and happy with life.
AFTER HOURS… …work finishes around 5.30pm, then I head home for my tea. Being a music lover I often take in a live gig too. Maybe it’s time I need more variety, it's the spice of life after all!

A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVES… …driving to work and listening to my eclectic choice of music. When I arrive at the shop I make sure the lights go on and the bills are paid. It’s then a busy day in the shop dealing with daily travel life, making bookings and doing the paperwork, which isn’t my strong point.
LIGHTS OUT… ...usually about 11pm. I don’t watch anything in bed because it gets my brain going and if I have anything on my mind it’ll keep me up for hours.
