THE PINK ISSUE

i-on joins the campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness

It’s all too easy to get bogged down in the minutiae of everyday goings on but it’s a good time to sit back and re-evaluate the good things in life. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and, in our pink edition, we’re joining the campaign to raise awareness about the big C. But we couldn’t have done it without the help of four inspiring Edinburgh women who have shared their empowering stories with i-on, reminding us that life is for living. Turn to page 30 for an emotional and positive read in The Good Fight. Also in this issue, interior designer Emily Smoor talks about a new wave of colour, where gloss is cool and white is for wusses (p38) and we offer up Autumn getaway suggestions with our three escapes to the Lakes, Cotswolds and the Highlands. From a luxury self-catering property to a foodie retreat in Loch Ness, you don’t need to venture far to enjoy some R ‘n R (see p44). There are some great new dinner date venues in the cities too so if you’re looking for recommendations on new places to try, turn to page 60. Congratulations to last month’s competition winner, Morven Garroway, who won a lavish dinner for four at Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux. This month we have

a luxury stay for two at one of Edinburgh’s most iconic hotels, ‘the Caley’. Find out how to enter on page 10. Until next month, enjoy i-on.

IT’S LIKE A COLLECTION OF WEE VILLAGES, ALL WITH THEIR OWN DISTINCT STYLE AND UNIQUE VIBE”

Zoe Schmid’s

Edinburgh

Any new projects in the pipeline? We’re growing the events side at Tea & Sympathy and have a wine tasting with Bibo Wine & Events on 11 October. We Are Amused are also taking over the shop on 01 November to launch some of their new prints. It should be a great evening which is open to everyone.

The owner of Tea & Sympathy, a café/ lifestyle shop in Shandon, on what she loves most about the city What brought you to Edinburgh? I moved here from London in 2015. Having spent 20 years there, I was ready to leave the rat-race and find a better work/ life balance.

Edinburgh’s best bits

Best thing about the city? It’s like a collection of wee villages, all with their own distinct style and unique vibe. I’ve loved getting to know the different areas over the years. Your preferred areas in town? We’re about to move to Roslin but have been living in Shandon which we’ve absolutely loved. It’s such a friendly neighbourhood with a real community feel. I also like Leith. It’s got a real grittiness to it and is ever-changing – there’s always a new bar or restaurant popping up. What does a typical day involve? As well as running Tea & Sympathy, I have a one-yearold daughter and we’re renovating our house so every day has its challenges but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

22

Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Portobello beach. It’s close to the city but it feels miles away from the hustle and bustle. What’s the city’s best kept secret? The Restoration Yard; fantastic for shopping and they do the best eggs benedict with a tattie scone. Sum up Edinburgh in three words: Friendly, beautiful, cultural. Chophouse Bruntsfield

FINNIESTON HAS A GREAT BUZZ. THERE’S SUCH A GOOD VARIETY OF RESTAURANTS AND BARS THERE TOO”

Simone McDowall’s

Glasgow The model and blogger on the city she calls home

Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Gleneagles Hotel; the grounds are lovely and they do a delicious brunch at the Birnam Brasserie.

Best thing about Glasgow? It’s full of creatives. I’ve been lucky to work with many of them and it’s amazing to see people pursuing their dreams and bringing their visions to life. Where’s the city’s most vibrant area? Finnieston has a great buzz. There’s such a good variety of restaurants and bars there too. Describe a typical day. I have an early morning workout at The Fitt Principle with my PT, Stephen, then I’ll check emails, make plans for blog posts and grab a healthy lunch at a cafe such as Martha’s or Eusebi’s (my favourite Italian in Glasgow). In the evening, I’ll make a salad or vegetable bake before going to yoga. I’ll then watch a couple of episodes of whichever series I’m hooked on right now it’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Tell us about your blog, SHE by SMD. It started a couple of years ago out of my love for all things styling and fashion. My modelling career intertwines nicely into it all. Any new projects in the pipeline? I’m currently working on something with The Fitt Principle and have new collaborations with Givenchy Beauty and Karl Lagerfeld Jewellery.

28

What’s the city’s best kept secret? Mr Ben Retro Clothing is a gold mine for embellished pieces, coats and costume jewellery.

Glasgow’s best bits

Where in Glasgow deserves a shout out? The Bier Halle. It’s my family’s bar/restaurant but everyone knows they do the best pizza in town. Sum up Glasgow in three words: Friendly, stylish, exciting. For more from Simone, visit shebysmd.com Brunch at Gleneagles

CANCER SHOWED ME THAT THE PEOPLE IN MY LIFE ARE EVEN MORE EXTRAORDINARY THAN I COULD EVER HAVE IMAGINED, THAT IT IS ABSOLUTELY OKAY TO ACCEPT HELP FROM OTHERS, AND IT’S ALRIGHT TO CRY”

LUCY’S STORY

“I

was on holiday in Tenerife, visiting one of my dearest friends, Majella, when I realised it was time I sought medical help. She had battled with breast cancer two years prior and, in her direct Irish manner, ‘suggested’ that the change I had noticed in the appearance of my breasts should be checked out. My sister was by my side when I was told I had breast cancer. There were no tissues. I felt numb. I know my inner fight to survive started in that very moment. “I had what they call lobular cancer. This means that it was not a lump, but it had taken a scatter gun approach in my right boob. They couldn’t save any of it so muscle and fatty tissue from other parts of my body would be used in reconstruction. As 50 per cent of the tissue does not survive, a further two operations were needed so with chemo, ops and radiotherapy, I was in and out of the hospital for two years. The care I received at the Western General was unbelievable. I

knew I was in the hands of some very special people. “With the exception of a few days, I simply knew I wasn’t going to die. It was never a case of why me? More, why not me? I wasn’t alone on my journey and so many things helped me through; the love and support of my friends and family, the generosity and understanding of my employer and colleagues, and a picture wall chart preparing me for the tough days and helping me to look forward to the days when something fabulous would happen. The emotional side of cancer is arguably more challenging than the physical side. You have to mourn the loss of a part of your body and accept that you and your life are now different. Maggie’s, the cancer support charity, continues to help me find the strength to accept the physical changes and face the emotional demons. “Cancer showed me that the people in my life are even more extraordinary than I could ever have imagined, that it is absolutely okay

to accept help from others, and it’s alright to cry. Surviving cancer has transformed my already blessed life. It has made me braver but also more afraid. (There is always the fear that it has come back). It gave me the freedom to take risks; I went from the security of a job I had been enjoying for 12 years to starting my own company, Bright Yellow, which provides training and consultancy to the hospitality, events and tourism market. Overall, I spend more time just being present and not rushing around filling every moment. When you give up the need to achieve something at every turn, you actually gain much more.”

DO YOUR BIT Have a Big Pink party on 12 October to help raise money to support anyone affected by breast cancer. It might be a pink clothes day at work or maybe a pink night in. For more ideas and to sign up for your free kit, visit breastcancercare.org.uk

he week before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was on our annual break at Centre Parcs with my husband and my then four-year-old son. It is frightening how quickly life can change. “I had no lump. My back had been sore for months and I was in the process of being seen by a consultant for my endometriosis. Cancer never crossed my mind. One morning I came out of the shower and saw a small area of puckering on my breast. My GP advised it was ‘hormonal’ and nothing to worry about. A non-urgent referral was sent for a check-up at the breast clinic. “I was diagnosed with incurable secondary breast cancer from the outset. I don’t think you can express in words just how that feels. I had no primary tumour – it had already spread to my bones on diagnosis and then to my brain in January this year. My world literally fell apart. “Living with cancer is exhausting but my husband is incredible. He has kept life consistent for our son by being an extremely hands on dad as well as supporting me through every part of this journey. We are lucky to have a strong network around us, in particular, my oldest, dearest friend, Kathryn, who is a nurse and has been by my side through everything from sticking on my wig, to giving me injections, bed bathing me and putting on my surgical stockings before all six operations so far. “The trivial things in life just don’t matter to me anymore. My husband and I laugh that we’ve stopped niggling at each other. Our focus is now solely on having quality time. I’ve learnt to slow down. Life is short and you need to focus your time and energy on what really matters. I worked so hard for years as a self-employed sales and events consultant. I also ran a small children’s events production company on the side. Those are great memories to have but I missed out on many social occasions as I wanted to ‘achieve’. I wish I had spent more time with friends and family and less with my blackberry. You can’t get those moments back. “For people like me, the ‘experience’ will never end until our bodies stop fighting. On

LIVING WITH CANCER IS EXHAUSTING BUT MY HUSBAND IS INCREDIBLE. HE HAS KEPT LIFE CONSISTENT FOR OUR SON AS WELL AS SUPPORTING ME THROUGH EVERY PART OF THIS JOURNEY”

average only 5-9% of funding raised for breast cancer is allocated to secondary breast cancer even though approximately 1,000 people die of the disease in the UK every month. Since being diagnosed I’ve set up a charity called Make 2nds Count (make2ndscount. co.uk) to raise vital funds and raise awareness for incurable secondary breast cancer. In doing so, I have attempted to turn a negative situation into a positive one.”

NIKKI’S STORY

“I

was diagnosed at 36 and at a crucial point in my life where I had finally settled, made a home and recently married. We had decided the time was right to try for a family and I was desperate to have a honeymoon baby. But nine months after the wedding, I discovered I had breast cancer. I now count my blessings that our baby making efforts were unsuccessful. “We were in the Hotel Indigo in New York when I felt something was just not quite right. I remember getting dressed and just brushing my breasts and noticing that one felt a wee bit harder than the other. Not a lump and nothing to see in the mirror, just a difference in firmness. I dismissed it initially but when my husband, Tim, caught me feeling it again and asked if I was worried, I finally made an appointment to see the GP. The first doctor told me it was nothing to worry about but because breast cancer is ‘fashionable’ she could refer me to the clinic for peace of mind and as a nonurgent case. I know it was not her intention to be flippant but I often think how inappropriate it was to describe it in that way. I returned to the GP a few days later after discovering a lump under my arm and was referred as urgent. As it turns out, my final diagnosis was Stage 3 triple negative, so was very much something to worry about. In hindsight, I think I spent the first six months in shock and it is only now that I look back and think, “F@#K, what just happened?! Was that me?” The journey through treatment is very surreal and I’d sometimes forget any of it was happening, walk past a mirror and shock myself. “My medical team repeatedly advised, “it’s small, we’ve caught it early” and we were aiming for a “cure”. I felt so incredibly lucky and

at times a little like a fraud. I had all this love and support and sympathy and I felt fine. This was a blip in life’s journey that would be over by Christmas. That was the plan. “My pathology results in January showed I was Stage 3 and not Stage 2 as previously predicted, reducing my survival rate by 25 per cent. This setback was the most difficult time emotionally, it was like a sledge hammer knocking me into a reality that was not my own. I took a few days off work to get my ‘house in order’, visited Maggie’s for the first time and broke down. They were amazing and helped to rationalise the situation and explain exactly what it all meant in a language I could understand. I left there a different person; focused, positive and ready to take on the next part of my journey - more surgery, more chemo, chemical menopause, bone strengthening and radiotherapy. I am happy to say I am now finished active treatment as of 30 August 2018 and awaiting final scan results before I can be discharged, praying for the words ‘N.E.D’ (No Evidence of Disease). “Cancer has changed my outlook no question. Giving back is something Tim and I have always done but now, it’s a core part of our lives. I joined a committee to work on charitable events (my day job is Naked Events with my business partner, Anna) and Tim recently organised a big cycle raising nearly £18,000 for Breast Cancer Now. My aim nowadays is to make tomorrow better than today, making precious memories along the way. If I want

CANCER HAS CHANGED MY OUTLOOK NO QUESTION. MY AIM NOWADAYS IS TO MAKE TOMORROW BETTER THAN TODAY” to do or say something I just do it because now I think ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ Nothing much is worse than being diagnosed with cancer. Go for it. Life is for living.”

I was 42 when I had mine and when I got the results I was devastated. I’d always been really healthy, living life to the full. I had spent my life training my body in the gym. I felt it had let me down. “I had five operations that year to get to clear margins and rounded off 2012 with radiotherapy. When the cancer came back two years later, I had to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction. Being a mother, my focus was on being here for my children and that got me through the tough times, along with the support from my amazing family and friends, and regular sessions of Bikram yoga to help me relax and clear my mind.

“I’m Irish but have lived in Scotland for over 20 years. I studied fashion design, worked in retail and was the director of a contemporary gallery for emerging artists in Edinburgh. I’m married and have two children, a dog, and a busy life getting my new business off the ground. I’ve had cancer but it doesn’t define me. The most important thing I’ve learnt about myself is that I’m a strong, resilient, determined woman and I want to make a difference with what I’ve learnt. “I’m now launching LoveRose Lingerie, a unique brand of post-surgery luxury lingerie designed by and for women who have had breast surgery. We use beautiful fabrics and colours to help women feel feminine and comfortable, and look gorgeous. For many women, lingerie is an important expression of their femininity and helps boost selfconfidence. The difficulty I had finding bras was ridiculous considering 50,000

women are diagnosed each year in the UK and over 500,000 are living well but with the outcomes of surgery for life. We had no choice about breast surgery, but we want to have choice about our lingerie. “Since recovering from cancer, I take time to have gratitude every morning. Your life can change in the blink of an eye. Embrace it, live it, love it and cherish it. And when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

F

or years, we have been stuck in a paint rut. We agonize for days over wall colours then, without a moment’s thought, slap Pure Brilliant White all over the ceiling and woodwork. People have been doing it for centuries and for good reason. Traditionally, the well to-do showed off their wealth by installing ornate cornicing on their ceilings and elaborate wood detailing around doors and windows. Painting these details white, highlighted them, making them stand out against the traditional deeper shades of the walls. However, these days there are not many of us who live in grand houses with detailed cornicing and woodwork, so the custom of painting them white is somewhat obsolete. At the other end of the scale is the minimalistic fashion for painting everything white. This looks fantastic in magazines featuring beautifully designed houses, where the plain white walls allow the focus to be on the building’s architectural merits. But how many of us live in houses like that? Exactly. So what am I getting at? Forget what you know, or what you thought you knew. It’s time to ride the new wave of colour, where gloss is cool, white is for wusses and if you think Elephant’s Breath is a medical condition, you’ve failed.

MONOCHROME I am a die-hard fan of the all-over colour. Painting your walls, ceilings and woodwork all the same shade has the unexpected effect of making your spaces feel much larger. There is no end, no beginning, just colour. It is also incredibly restful as your eyes are not being interrupted by contrasting shades cutting through the room, making this look the perfect strategy for a bedroom. Porcelain V is a mainstay at Fantoush, a grey-blue with lavender undertones by The Paint and Paper Library, this shade looks heavenly on any surface.

TONE ON TONE

Pink all over,Photo photoby Terence Phantoush Chin

If you like the idea of a monochrome scheme, but still want to add definition to your woodwork, consider using varying shades of the same colour. Most paint companies’ layout their swatches in colour families, to help you marry matching tones. If you want a foolproof range – Little Greene offer a selection of their colours in Pale, Mid and Deep tones, while The Paint and Paper Library’s range, includes 19 colours, each in five different numbered shades for you to choose from, making tone on tone as easy as painting by number.

INTERIORS

GLOSS IT OVER One of my favourite designers, New Yorker Steven Gambrel is the reigning champion of the lacquered wall. Walls are painted and then repeatedly lacquered to create a high gloss finish. Light dances off the surface adding a three-dimensional quality to the space to beautiful effect. While professional lacquering is a costly business, painting a ceiling in gloss paint has a similar effect. Try a soft pastel tone in a gloss finish to reflect light back into the room.

COLOUR ON TOP

TOP TIP

Speaking of painting your ceiling, it’s not as scary as you think. In fact you could view it as a shortcut to brilliance. In my experience, the very best interiors have an element of surprise, and a colourful ceiling is exactly that. It is the equivalent of having a killer necklace or scarf that makes a pair of tracksuit bottoms look ah-mazing. You just throw it on and nothing else is required. For those with gumption, Craig & Rose’s French Turquoise is a beautiful, rich teal. Pair it with the barely-there violet, Marble III by Paint and Paper Library for an ultra-chic Milanese look. Alternatively, if you love that Californian vibe, white walls with a soft pink ceiling are the ideal back-drop for a Boho interior. Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster is the perfect grown-up pink, pair it with Dimity for walls that glow.

Gloss and satin paints highlight imperfections in your walls. Make sure your plasterwork is in tip-top condition, before going for a high sheen finish. A skim coat by a plasterer will get your walls in perfect shape and ready to shine.

Edinburgh born company, Craig and Rose recently released a new range of specialist Photo by Camilla Wahala paints, allowing you to recreate walls in concrete, aged bronze and stone to name a few. SHAPE UP

If a steady hand is not your super power, fear not. Frog Tape is a painting tape specifically designed for creating sharp, neat lines, making colour blocking achievable for even the most cack handed of DIY amateurs.

Forget hanging a painting, make the walls your canvas with bold geometric shapes of colour. Take inspiration from the artist Camilla Wahala, whose bold, pop graphics have graced the walls of galleries and buildings across the globe. Her simple yet striking designs are the perfect inspiration for creating blocks of colour at home.

Nicky Howden relives happy family memories and checks in at The Gate House

I

’ve always had fond memories of the Lake District. From hill walks and boat rides, to feeding the ducks on Lake Windermere, it was my happy place as a little girl. I’ve been meaning to revisit for years and recently resurrected childhood holidays with a long overdue family trip. And, a bit like Goldilocks, our trip was all about finding accommodation that was just right; a selfcatering property that wasn’t too remote, near our favoured location of Lake Coniston and able to cater for three families with three young children. I was delighted then to finally stumble upon The Gate House, looked after by Coppermines Lakes Cottages, an independent business with over 80 hand-picked, self-catering Lake District cottages (many pet friendly). Located just a stone’s throw from Coniston village, this picture perfect self-catering property has undergone a complete refurbishment with seriously good results. From stylish modern bathrooms with roll top baths to luxury fittings and furnishings, and a fully-equipped kitchen with quality crockery (not-tomention a very delicious welcome hamper), it feels more like someone’s luxury Georgian home, than a rental property.

Mom jeans, £40, topshop.com

The nearby village is full of pubs and shops but if you really want to see the landscape in all its glory, take a lake cruise aboard the Coniston Gondola. If you want to branch out further and you should there are 16 lakes in the Lake District and you’re not too far from any. If you’re looking to eat out and dress up like you’re in the city, head over to Bowness on Windermere. Otherwise keep it causal in places like Keswick, Kendal and pretty Grassmere. A long weekend later and we’d introduced our Lake District tradition to our own children and made new family memories, with The Gate House featuring favourably in all of them. The Gate House sleeps eight people and is available from £1,632 for three nights. To find out more about the property contact Coppermines Lakes Cottages, Tel: 01539 441765 or visit coppermines.co.uk. I

t’s a funny thing being a tourist in your own country. Whilst everything is so very familiar, you are occasionally surprised by a word or a greeting that reminds you how varied Britain actually is. Dialects, scenery and identities can change completely just 20 miles apart. The Cotswolds perfectly demonstrates this. Some 800 square miles of golden stone and rolling hills, it runs through five counties including Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire– each one a little different to its neighbour. The Cotswolds is as quintessentially English as you can get. With quaint stone villages around almost every corner, it feels like walking around an Agatha Christie film set. We stayed at The Lion in the small village of Wendlebury, just 12 miles from Oxford. You don’t come here looking for a fast pace of life. It’s a pretty village with a stream running through it, and not much else. A 300-year-old pub, The Lion has undergone some serious updating with the addition of a stone annex and courtyard. Our room was a luxury suite with floor to ceiling windows looking over the unspoilt countryside. We arrived in time for dinner; superb pub grub delivered with finesse. A starter of scallops with pea purée and

prosciutto was delicious as were main courses of spring lamb, and beef and ale pie with triple cooked chips. We took a trip to Oxford for the day. The seventh most visited city in the UK is stunning- ‘dreaming spires’ indeed- and is only slightly marred by the number of tourists also enjoying the views. The Cotswolds are beautiful. There’s a lot more to see than a two-night stay allows but if you fancy a step back in time, then it could be just the place for you. ituated at the southern tip of Loch Ness in the pretty town of Fort Augustus lies The Lovat, an old Victorian hotel with a delicious secret – it’s foodie heaven. Headed up by husband and wife dream team, Sean and Caroline Kelly, the awardwinning eco-premises, rooms, restaurant and bar bring a slice of culinary magic to The Highlands that makes the near four-hour drive from Edinburgh or Glasgow worth every mile. Using the freshest, finest, seasonal ingredients, head chef Sean creates dishes that are (almost) too pretty to eat. His clever and precise cooking meant we really couldn’t fault anything from the freshly baked bread to the homemade pasta, mussels and best pork loin we’ve ever tasted. Retiring to our newly refurbished deluxe room complete with garden views and an array of Temple Spa products, we clambered atop the biggest bed ever, letting it all settle in and rest up for the next round; breakfast. We awoke to the sound of nothing but bird song, well rested and ready to see what the morning would bring.

And, you guessed it – the perfectly presented cooked breakfast got top marks too. Dinner, bed and breakfast is priced from £216. The Lovat, Loch Ness, Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire, PH32 4DU, Tel: 01456 490000, thelovat.com

BIRTHMARKREMOVAL Lauren Chornogubsky waves goodbye to unwanted birthmarks

I

’ve always been self-conscious about my birthmarks; I’ve one on my chin and another on my upper thigh. After researching the safest, most effective treatments for their removal I booked an appointment at Sk:n Glasgow. The treatment is carried out by a specialist doctor using laser technology and works for anyone with pigmented or vascular birthmarks. My pigmented birthmark at the top of my thigh was about the size of a 50 pence so treatment time was pretty quick but it did feel slightly more uncomfortable than the treatment on my vascular birthmark on my chin. The sharp, burning sensation seemed to stick around for an hour after the treatment. Both birthmarks reacted differently to the treatment. The vascular one was initially quite bruised but this faded after a week. The pigmented birthmark needed three sessions and scabbed over between treatments but this healed within two days. The number of treatments required depends on your skin type and size of affected area but luckily for me, mine were both quite small so it barely took anytime at all. Now my birthmarks have gone and I’m delighted. I only wish I had been to Sk:n much earlier in life, it makes such a difference not to be self-conscious anymore. Birthmark Removal is available at Sk:n with prices from £235 per session. For more information visit sknclinics.co.uk or Tel: 0333 130 7347.

Scotland’s own celebrity nutritionist, Amanda Hamilton, talks to i-on about her career, self-confidence and how she feels about getting older

GUT

INSTINCT Your onscreen style is self-assured and confident. Have you always been like that? I’ve always had self-belief, but in my early twenties I didn’t have the confidence to talk back. When I started in television I was told how to dress and how to cut my hair. Now I’m secure enough to choose what’s important and what’s not, and really live by my core values. Confidence is not something that can be faked. I’ve never felt more confident than I do now. Ageing: love it or hate it? I think having been in the public eye makes ageing harder – there’s always a record of images or videos of younger days. I look back and think I took so much for granted. I’ve always been active but now I believe in regular Pilates over and above the fitness side; it really helps with shape. I also take care of my skin and hair properly now and I’ve had the broken veins on my legs (thanks pregnancy!) treated at Face & Body clinic in Edinburgh. I really value expert input and owner Victoria Dobbie is now my go-to skin mentor. Do you think nutrition and confidence are linked? I don’t think there’s a confidence boosting way of eating but if you’re confident, you’re able to ask for what you want, or what you feel your body needs. Conversely, I do see a lot of confidence issues stemming from unresolved childhood issues that show themselves around eating habits. Family motto? Be yourself. Enjoy doing whatever you want to express yourself. I’ve followed my passion and interests and enjoyed a career from it. I didn’t really consider the opinions of others too much and although I’m a pretty reserved person, I always followed my gut.

DINNER DATE Four new restaurants to try this month

VESTA RESTAURANT & BAR Nicky Howden enjoys some food for thought in the West End

A

s homelessness continues to rise, there is a growing appetite for conscious dining which should give us all food for thought. Vesta, owned by Social Bite and run by David Hall, previously of The Innis & Gunn Beer Kitchens and Tigerlily, is the new incarnation of the homeless charity’s first acclaimed restaurant Home. Located in the same premises, it remains firmly committed to continuing the legacy of its predecessor by helping give back to those who need it most. So, alongside training and employment opportunities for members of the Social Bite Academy – the social enterprise aiming to end homelessness in Scotland - Vesta offers a ‘Pay It Forward’ scheme where customers can choose to donate to the charity. And every Monday afternoon it hosts a twocourse lunch exclusively for those affected by homelessness. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to go for the conscious eating alone. However, Vesta is also a pretty cool and buzzy destination – even on our Monday evening visit. The menu has a good mix of innovative vegan and vegetarian plates, and comfort classics with everything from starters of cauliflower buffalo wings, £4.95, and ham hock bon bons, £5.95, to mains such as the deliciously rich Mac n Cheese, £9.95, signature Vesta burger, £10.95, and chargrilled 28-day dry aged rib eye with garlic fries and béarnaise sauce, £22.95 (if you’re on a date night maybe swap the garlic fries for normal fries… they’re addictively good but potent).

“GO FOR THE ATMOSPHERE, GOOD SERVICE AND TASTY EATS”

A chilled place to enjoy with friends, family or partners, go to Vesta for the atmosphere, good service and tasty eats, and to support the great work of Social Bite. I’ll see you there for the ‘Bubbles & Brunch’ Sundays where glasses of Prosecco start at just £2.50. 7-8 Queensferry St, EH2 4PA, Tel: 0131 220 0773, vestaedinburgh.co.uk

NANIKA NOODLE & BUN BAR Victoria Martin discovers her new favourite Glasgow hotspot

I

’m always on the lookout for casual dining spots to try in Glasgow and the newly opened Nanika Noodle & Bun Bar looked like the perfect mate date venue for an overdue catch up. Previously situated within The Glad Café, it now has a permanent home on Victoria Road which is tiny but authentic with canteen style dining and an open kitchen. The menu is straightforward with ‘Small Things’, all £3, ‘Not So Small Things’, all £8, and the famous Bao Buns, £3.50. I opt for the Thai Pulled Pork, which has just the right level of spice so as not to overpower the dish, whilst Jayne goes for the moreish Salmon & Sweet Potato Bowl, £8 each. We also share some Edamame beans and two Boa Buns which are outstanding; the buns light and sticky and the fillings of chicken and prawn tempura both delicious. Highly recommended. 72 Victoria Rd, G42 7AA, nanika2.neocities.org. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 5-10pm.

SONDER Holly Tracey finds a surprise in the Southside

I

nspired by modern European cooking, this quirky new restaurant in Newington offers a selection of inventive sharing plates. For our table of two, it is suggested that we choose six dishes from the menu, each of which is minimally described with just a list of ingredients to keep things simple. From the ‘Snacks’ section, we plump for the Chicken wing, maple and corn, £5; and Black olive focaccia and mascarpone, £3.50. From the ‘Garden’, we choose the Tomatoes, almond, raspberry and tomato water, £7; and Kohlrabi, horseradish, spinach, and apple, £6; then it’s one from the ‘Sea’ – the Crab, daikon, coriander, and nage, £9; and finally, our ‘Land’ selection, the lamb neck, carrot, apricot and yoghurt, £12. Certain dishes were clear stand-outs – the lamb neck for its classic flavours and precision cooking (I’ve never tasted meat so tender) and the chicken wing (delicate yet moreish). If you crave a wealth of choice and generous portions Sonder might not be for you. However, the creativity and obvious passion behind each dish make this south side spot rather special. 74-78 S Clerk St, EH8 9PT, Tel: 0131 667 7032, restaurant-sonder.com

THE LITTLE CHARTROOM

Amy Falconer discovers a hidden gem

H

eaded up by chef Roberta HallMcCarron trained by Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack nonetheless with husband Shaun front of house, The Little Chartroom is a small, kick-ass bistro making waves on Leith Walk. It’s clear from the beginning that we’re in for something special. The chicken, wood pigeon and prune terrine, pickled vegetables, £8.50, is picture perfect, a light and delicate starter which packs a punch in the flavour department. A celeriac soup, £7, peppered with tiny squares of apples, celery and walnuts, is fresh and bursting with flavour too. For our main course, I opt for the sublime bavette of beef, gnocchi, spinach and girolles, £23.50. Under the perfectly cooked and dressed bavette lay a whole meal’s worth of soft, rich, gravy-soaked beef shin. The only misfortune being that the portion size is just too big for me. My friend opts for that day’s special; Venison, puff pastry, chicory marmalade, wild mushrooms, apricot, celeriac puree, £25, which is devoured wholeheartedly. And in the name of research we wrap it up with carrot cake,

64

meadowsweet and orange, £7.50, cinnamon rich with orange top notes, and bramble and lemon tart, white chocolate, £7.50, which turns out to be the star of the show despite all the delights that came before. So good, so up our street, and just what you’d want from a neighbourhood bistro. 30-31 Albert Pl, EH7 5HN, Tel: 0131 556 6600, thelittlechartroom.com

BIT AT THE BACK

I WAKE UP… To a planned wardrobe. I always have a few potential outfits, especially on show days. If I’ve time for breakfast I usually have fruit or granola before going to the gym.

I WROTE MY FIRST SONG WHEN I WAS 13 AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE FEELING OF EMPOWERMENT”

A TYPICAL DAY… If I’m writing, it’s pretty much wake up, write all day, then go to sleep. If it’s a gig day, I try to structure it better, eat well and be more active before travelling. HOW I GOT INVOLVED IN MUSIC… I wrote my first song when I was 13 and fell in love with the feeling of empowerment. I’ve never really considered anything else since. Playing my first shows in my hometown of Dundee just confirmed I wanted to pursue a career in music. BEST PART OF THE JOB IS… Getting to see the world and play music that has been written in my bedroom.

IN 10 YEARS’ TIME… I want to be writing songs every day and touring the world. I love being able to call what I do a career and for me the opportunity to still be doing that in 10 years is what makes me work so hard.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… singer-songwriter Be Charlotte

AND THE WORST PART… The lack of routine. Sometimes you can be away for weeks at a time. CAREER HIGHLIGHT… It’s just the beginning for me, but there have already been a few wow moments including the day I signed a record deal.

66

AFTER A PERFORMANCE… I like to change into comfy clothes and eat. It’s so important to warm down properly in a similar way as you’d warm down after a gym session or sports game.

Be Charlotte will perform at the Rock Trust Sleep Out in St Andrew Square Gardens on 26 October. Tickets for Sleep Out are available at rocktrust.org/ sleep-out.
