Introducing Edinburgh’s biggest make-up vlogger

The capital’s festive celebrations officially kick off with Light Night on 18 November and I’ve got to admit, there’s something magical about those twinkling lights that brighten dark and gloomy skies. It also means the Christmas countdown is officially on (gulp). To help you get organised, we’ve put together a list of 40 gifts that really are worth giving (p32). From spa getaways to home-baked sweet treats, designer watches to premium booze, it’s all there and more. If you’re not quite ready to bury your style under cosy jumpers and puffa jackets, fashion stylist Andreia V Afonso will help you look cool and understated with her guide on how to wear this season’s sharpest separates on page 48. For a make-up refresh, our cover star, Edinburgh resident, beauty blogger and YouTube sensation Diana Curmei shares her tips and tricks on creating different looks for the season (p54). And on the music front, David Pollock talks to Scottish indie rock band The Twilight Sad on making a comeback. You can also read about some of our favourite new restaurant haunts on page 74. Congratulations to last month’s competition winner, Georgia Grudge, who will soon enjoy a luxury stay for two at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh

If you want chicken, fish or anything else, just say, they’ll make it for you. Then there are endless sides: think potato dauphinoise, in fact any kind of potatoes; veg galore; and enormous fluffy Yorkshire puddings. I got carried away and went back three (yes, three) times. Desserts are as impressive with delicious miniature chocolate brownies, panna cotta, treacle tart and cupcakes. There’s also a cheese section, ice cream cart and DIY popcorn station. This must be one of the city’s best kept secrets and all for just £29 per person. Go, fill-yourboots, and make time for a nap afterwards. You’ll need one. Sunday lunch is served from 12.30-2.30pm. CALTON HILL IS A GREAT SPOT TO TAKE A BREATHER ON A BUSY WEEKDAY. THE PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE CITY REALLY HELP TO CLEAR MY HEAD”
Lindsay Stewart’s
Edinburgh
Best thing about your hometown? Edinburgh has everything to offer tourists and residents - be it our wide open green spaces, thriving bars and restaurants, or even our beaches. And to top it off, we know exactly how to throw a Hogmanay party. What does a typical day involve? No two days are the same, and that’s what I love about my job. I speak with the regional press on a daily basis, but also work on exciting projects, including events, luxury brand partnerships and marketing opportunities to promote Harvey Nichols within the capital and beyond. I’m lucky to live in Dalry so work is just a 20 minute walk away. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Calton Hill is a great spot to take a breather on a busy weekday. The panoramic views of the city really help to clear my head. Where’s your favourite area in the city? I have to give this one to Stockbridge; it’s full of life and energy, with a real village vibe. I’m a massive fan of its independent retailers and vintage boutiques, and love its farmers’ market every Sunday. Plus, you’re just a short stroll to the Royal Botanic Gardens or National Gallery of Modern Art.

What’s the city’s best kept secret? The Cameo Picturehouse in Tollcross. The art house cinema screens everything from mainstream films to cult classics, documentaries and live productions from the the National Theatre and London Palladium.
What one thing would you change about the city? I travelled Australia a few years back and, honestly, coming home made me appreciate this city so much more. Saying that, some more sunshine would be nice! Sum up Edinburgh in three words: Lively. Historic. Home.

WHERE I-ON’S BEEN EATING Victoria Martin discovers The Botany
C
hange is not always a bad thing, and certainly not at The Botany where a £200k transformation of a slightly dilapidated pub (The Strathmore) has revealed a desirable new dining destination. But the proof, they say, is in the pudding. And the starters. And definitely the main courses. And don’t forget the cocktail list. To start: a trio of starters; prawn tempura, £6.50; sweetcorn fritters, £5.95; and a haggis bon bon, £6.25. For a non-vegetarian, I am as surprised as anyone that the sweetcorn fritter is my favourite of the three. For the main, the monkfish curry with king prawns and sticky rice, £15.50, is surprisingly light but extremely tasty and tangy, thanks to the fresh mango flavour. Desserts are, again, served as a trio and it is a triumphant trio at that: Cremè Brûlée, £4.95; banana and walnut loaf, £5.50; and a perfectly peachy (in every sense) panna cotta, £5.50. A little off the beaten track, but still only a few minutes from the bustling West End, The Botany is certainly worth the taxi fare up Queen Margaret Drive. KNOW YOUR AREA Gordon McGuire, head of marketing at Corum Property, takes a look at Glasgow’s West End
T
he unique vibe of the West End has always been a big pull for people looking to set up home in the area. It’s constantly buzzing with great bars, restaurants and boutique shops lining the streets, the schools are excellent and the green space is vast and plentiful. It has the feeling of a classic university town, but it has the soul of being part of a vibrant city. It’s such a great place to live that the property market here has reached fever pitch with potential house buyers clambering to get their hands on a place to call their own in the area. Corum are veterans of the West End property market and if you have a house to sell or are looking for that special place to buy, then the agency’s local expertise gives you the best shot at getting the perfect result. Resident Associate Partner in the West End, Chris Breckenridge, says: “We find we are consistently generating sales over home report value and seeing homes going to closing dates as buyers compete for the limited available stock.” The remarkable thing about the West End is its diversity within the individual neighbourhoods; from student flats around Byers Road to modern refurbishments of classic buildings in Kelvinside, and the luxury apartments in leafy Park Circus. As a trusted voice of authority in West End real estate, Corum has stunning properties that traverse the whole spectrum. The volume of on-going building works is also testament to the increased popularity of the area and, over the next 18 months, a number of significant refurbishments and new-builds will be coming to the market via Corum. If ever there was a time to consider moving to Glasgow’s West End, then it is certainly now and getting in touch with our local Corum branch for a free no obligation chat is the ideal start. One day, I could be assisting Duffy backstage at Louis Vuitton in Paris and the next, I could be putting together hair looks for an advertising campaign. Where do you go when you need a quick escape? I love Glasgow’s green spaces. When I get time, my wife and I head for one of them with our dog, Harvey. What’s the city’s most vibrant area? The Finnieston strip - the variety of bars and restaurants is amazing. And it’s best kept secret? The statue of the Spanish communist party leader ‘La Pasionaria’ by the Clyde. I love it.
Worst thing about the city? The poverty. The level of homelessness here needs to be addressed. Is there anywhere that you think deserves a shout out in the city? The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice. It provides amazing care for patients and their families at one of the most difficult times in their lives. Sum up Glasgow in three words: One will do – home.

Due to the ongoing ‘80s revival, boxy, masculine silhouettes are more modern and on-trend. However, if massive shoulder pads and oversized shapes seem a bit OTT, add a feminine touch by cinching the waist of your blazer with a belt bag or combining a classic grey check suit with statement accessories.

Introducing…
easyNeon You have over 100K followers on Instagram. Is this also focused on makeup and beauty? When I joined in 2014, I was just sharing random pictures, but when my followers increased, I started focusing more on creating professional, high quality content. Now, it’s a mix of travel, lifestyle, fashion, makeup… and my cat - all my life in one place.
OVER 650K PEOPLE FOLLOW YOUTUBE STAR DIANA CURMEI FOR HER BEAUTY TIPS AND TRICKS. WE MET THE EDINBURGH RESIDENT TO FIND OUT WHAT MOTIVATES HER AND DISCOVER HER FAVOURITE PARTY LOOKS FOR THE SEASON
What did you want to achieve by having an online presence? In the beginning, I just wanted to make friends, then it became more about sharing my passion. What brought you to Edinburgh? To give you a very short answer — love. My boyfriend lives here. We were in a long-distance relationship for two years and after I finished university in Moldova, I decided to move to be with him. Where in the city do you live? I live near St Andrew Square. I prefer the city centre as there’s so much going on. When did you start your YouTube channel? I created it around 2012 because I wanted to express myself and my passion for make-up. At the time, I was having a love-hate relationship with my body and creating different looks helped me to feel pretty. It was like therapy.
54
You make a living as an online influencer now. What’s the best thing about your job? The freedom to travel. I can live where I want and still do my job. A lot of my followers assume I live in America and maybe one day I will but, for now, I love living in Scotland. What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without in the winter? A good night moisturiser. When you’re asleep, your skin can relax and repair and it’s important to give it a helping hand particularly at this time of year when the weather takes its toll. I adore the Klairs Midnight Blue Calming cream (£22.30, skinsider.co.uk) affordable, soothing and nourishing - that’s all I need.
BEAUTY
A touch of sparkle
This look is for those of you who want a bit of glitter but not super-dramatic, heavy make-up. I like to keep the face natural to have the focus only on the eyes. When working with sparkling pigments, it’s best to use a creamy base underneath and choose the colour based on how bright or dark you want the look to be. Here, I used Pony Effect unlimited cream shadow in #high standards (£17.99, Amazon.co.uk) with Witch’s Pouch Selfie Fix Pigment in bronze (£12, eBay.co.uk) on top.
55
Soft, smokey eyes EXPERIMENTING WITH MAKE-UP MADE ME FEEL PRETTY WHEN I WAS HAVING A LOVEHATE RELATIONSHIP WITH MY BODY. IT WAS LIKE THERAPY” 56
Using peach tones rather than dark grey creates a softer more subtle smokey eye which is much more wearable and gives the eyes a fresher look. Here, I used lots of peachy shades from the Anastasia Beverley Hills Subculture palette (£43, Cultbeauty.co.uk) and Melt Cosmetics Rust stack (£44, Meltcosmetics.com) on the eyes then paired the look with mauve liquid lipstick for an unexpected contrast.
BEAUTY
Dramatic lips and liner
This classic look flatters any complexion and is my go-to for a glamorous night out. Practice is the key when it comes to eyeliner so take your time and perfect that line. It’s also about choosing the right product – my favourite is the Inglot gel liner in 77 (£12, Inglotuk.com). On the lips, use a matte liquid lipstick to give a velvety look with a long-lasting effect.
57
FLAWLESS BASE Offering long lasting, buildable coverage and a flash-back free SPF so that it never looks chalky on camera, the new Shameless foundation from Marc Jacobs Beauty ticks all our boxes. It’s available in 29 shades, find your colour match at the new counter in Harvey Nichols Edinburgh. Also at marcjacobsbeauty.com
BEAUTYNOTES Must try products and treatments
Three ways to winter-proof your skin 1. Nourish your skin from the inside out with a daily dose of Skinade. The award-winning anti-ageing collagen drink was developed by scientists and aims to improve the way your skin looks in just 30 days. From £105 for a 30-day supply. For stockists, visit skinade.com 2. Exfoliate regularly. Buffing away dead skin cells two times a week will help boost a dull complexion and improve the effectiveness of your moisturiser. For the body, we love Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Glow, £40.50. 3. Invest in a good eye cream. The delicate skin around your eyes is much more prone to dryness and this can highlight the appearance of fine lines or crepey skin. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream, £45, is a great option to bring back a bright, hydrated look.
BEAUTY EXPERT Featuring Margaret Dabbs, podiatrist and founder of Margaret Dabbs London Why I started the business… Traditionally a pedicurist would beautify feet and a podiatrist would treat an ailment. I knew there was a gap in the market for a foot treatment that did both. I also knew that beauty products for feet didn’t work on a treatment level so I set about formulating my own products that were effective yet luxurious at the same time. The most popular treatment at our clinic is… The Margaret Dabbs London Medical Pedicure, a 45 minute bespoke treatment by one of our qualified foot experts. The entire treatment focuses on the health and the beauty of the feet, and the visible difference is incredible. Three beauty essentials I can’t live without… Margaret Dabbs London Hygiene Cream hydrates, soothes, prevents and combats common foot complaints. Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial, a luxurious oil that transforms the skin overnight. For all year sun protection, I swear by Ultra Sun which are great products for fair and delicate skin. For treatments, visit Margaret Dabbs London, 13 Bothwell St, Glasgow, G2 6LY, Tel: 0141 221 1155, margaretdabbs.co.uk.

S
ometimes you reach a point in your life when you need to sit back and take stock. I reached mine over the summer when a few bad runs had built up to make me the most anxious and stressed I’d been in years. I’ve known about the benefits of reflexology for a long time (some of my favourite people swear by it) but, I’d never actually tried it myself until I finally managed to carve out some ‘me-time’ in my hectic diary. For the uninitiated, reflexology works on the premise that each zone of the foot corresponds to a different part of the body. It helps the body to restore its balance naturally by working on different pressure points to unblock energy and tension. The non-invasive treatment can help with symptoms like stress, insomnia, fertility and menopause, headaches, IBS and general wellbeing. The real beauty is that each treatment is customised to your specific concerns and, oh, how I wish I had entered into this wonderful world before. Gentle, therapeutic and eye-opening, I loved my first session with Mel Thomson from Mel Says Reflex so much, I booked a further three for optimal results. Overall, I feel less anxious but, more importantly, the whole process has made me realise I must be kinder to my body and not let anxiety take control. Taking time for myself has become a priority in my diary and reflexology will remain right at the top of my to-do list. Add it to yours too.
The holistic approach to the Dr Hauschka classic treatment makes it one of the best facials around; the plant-based skin care products work wonders on sensitive skin (try the rose day cream) and the regenerating day cream is a new favourite. It’s great for mature skin and supports its natural renewing process to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Use it and your skin will smell good, feel good and look fresh. What more could you want? Dr Hauschka regenerating day cream is £45 at John Lewis and at dr.hauschka.com

LIFE’S BALANCE
Ebony Dee Cheyne grew up in Edinburgh but within days of graduating, she was transported to another world, working alongside her photography idol in Hollywood, before giving it all up to work in alternative healthcare.
Why did you step away from the dream job, photographing celebrities in Hollywood? My early career was creatively very challenging and exciting. It felt great to be respected by my idols and mentors, but it was costing me my health and at some point, my integrity. The more celebrity work I did, the more I was being forced to alter features of people we all know and love to become CGI versions of themselves. The celebrities often had no idea as I’d be on set working on the images straight from the camera. I was frustrated with the industry and the lies and was anxious and depressed about my health. All while living the dream lifestyle. How did your health suffer? I was stressed, always working on impossible deadlines. I prided myself in being able to work for days and nights on end with no sleep. My eating habits were purely convenience based, my hormones were playing havoc, I was sometimes in excruciating pain, nauseous all the time and was passing out with no explanation. I kept quiet about my illness it’s not cool to talk about chronic illness - and moved to Paris to slow down my career. Unfortunately, my illness got so bad that I was bed-ridden and had to quit the industry. I was diagnosed with dysautonomia and ended up on about 15 medications. That must have been tough? Having chronic health issues does nothing for your confidence; not trusting your body to be well enough to show up to appointments, bloating, nausea and pain. It makes you feel isolated.

So how did your new business, Shine from Inside, come about? I’ve been on a journey of discovery with my illness. I learnt about real food, a balanced lifestyle and the incredible benefits of essential oils. Healthcare is evolving and doTERRA essential oils are at the forefront of this movement to use trusted plant medicine when possible. Personally, I was able to stop my medication within a day of taking the oils and that’s where the new business idea came from. I saw an opportunity to sell an extremely rewarding product based on conscious enterprise.

How did you get your confidence back? By accepting that confidence is not about being perfect, you are just you. We can use what nature and modern science has to offer to age gracefully- I tried a couple of non-invasive treatments including the Platelet Rich Plasma facial, which uses your own body’s platelets to rejuvenate your skin at Face & Body; we can find confidence in our appearance, career, actions and relationships. But to me, inner, unshakable confidence is self-belief. Face & Body is a multi-award-winning aesthetic clinic in Edinburgh specialising in pro-ageing and beautification treatments, that give natural looking results, to boost your confidence.

EVERY NIGHT, ROBERT SMITH FROM THE CURE WAS WATCHING US PLAY LIVE”
FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...…
THE TWILIGHT SAD
64
MUSIC
1. THEY’RE ONE OF SCOTLAND’S MOST-LOVED BANDS
But The Twilight Sad, who formed in Kilsyth, North Lanarkshire, 15 years ago, were considering jacking it in before their last album, Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave, was released in 2014. Where their dark but sensitive take on post-punk was every bit worthy of the acclaim of, say, Interpol or Editors, they were dismayed by the commercial response to its predecessor No One Can Ever Know in 2012. Fortunately the record was received well by audiences, and has given way to bigger things.
2. THEY’VE MADE SOME FAMOUS FANS SINCE THE LAST ALBUM
“The tour for the last album was coming to an end, and then all of a sudden two tours supporting The Cure came up, which extended it by another year,” says the band’s singer James Graham. “That was a lifechanging experience, to be honest, I’m a massive fan of The Cure and we got to play on their stage every night – we went down well with the crowd, then when we walked offstage, lead singer Robert Smith would be watching us. It was a dream come true, and it was all because he liked the music and wanted to give us a chance.”
3. THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF CHANGES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS
David Pollock talks to one of Scotland’s most resilient groups on making their comeback
“The last album did better than any of our others, which is unusual, because in the music industry sales are usually going down rather than up,” says James. “But since we toured with The Cure, we’ve had messages from all over the world, even in countries we didn’t play. Although after that tour was finished, we stopped playing, so we don’t know how it might have changed things for us. In the meantime, I got married and we’ve got a son now, so everything is different.”
4. THE NEW ALBUM IS THEIR MOST ANTICIPATED YET
“The last two years have brought some of the greatest moments of my life, but also some moments where I’ve been at the lowest of the low,” recalls James. “Lyrically, It Won’t Be Like This All the Time reflects that. It tells you to appreciate the good times while you have them, but also to realise when you’re really low that it won’t be like this all the time. Things do get better.”
5. A VERY IMPORTANT SHOW IS COMING AT THE END OF THE YEAR
A close friend of Frightened Rabbit’s late singer Scott Hutchison, James and other friends will sing lead vocals when Frightened Rabbit reunite for charity at Social Bite’s Sleep in the Park event at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Bandstand on 08 December. “It’s not an easy thing to talk about, but it’s important to talk about it,” he says. “I don’t think I’ve completely processed what’s happened. I really miss him and it’s important to keep his music out there so new people can discover it and know who he was.” The Twilight Sad play the Liquid Room, Edinburgh, on 29 November, and the Barrowland, Glasgow, on 02 March. The album It Won’t Be Like This All the Time is released on 18 January. thetwilightsad.com

BE BOLD
Bring some colour into your home with upholstery in rich, dark tones. Whether it’s an ottoman, a lounge chair or a whole new sofa; a pop of colour can brighten your room making it a much more welcoming place to relax when it’s cold and grey outside.
Osaka sofa, £2,425, BoConcept.

ENHANCE THE HEARTH Dress up your fireplace with candles, antique finds, and framed pictures – even if you don’t have a fire, a floating shelf filled with little treasures makes a space feel cosier.
Embossed decanter, £20, and Hexagon tray, £25, both Next.
RAISE YOUR GLASS
Let’s be honest, we’re all going to be staying in and drinking a lot of red wine this season – and possibly the odd tumbler of whisky to warm your cockles on a cold night too. Instead of making do with the whatever’s in your glass cupboard; make it a more luxurious experience with some chunky crystal low balls, roomy goblets and a luxurious decanter.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN
SWITCH UP YOUR SCENTS
Make the most of the rich Autumnal colours outdoors by using them to decorate your home. Edinburgh blogger Claire Stewart of This Little House likes to get the kids involved too: “On our family walk, our boys love to collect autumn’s fallen treasures which inspired this leaf garland for their rooms. If you pop a sealant on the leaves it stops them from drying out and makes the perfect decorative garland.”
GO FAUX “Don’t underestimate the part that scent can play in the styling of a room,” says Claire McLoughlin, Showroom Manager of Jeffreys Interiors. “Rich spices and woody notes along with heady florals help to warm a room. Our signature scent in the Stockbridge showroom is Oud Nobile by Dr Vranjes – made in Florence, the quality and scent throw of these diffusers surpasses any others we’ve tried.”

EAT EDINBURGH Four places to enjoy light bites and sharing plates
MERIENDA Carrie Mitchell discovers a rare jewel in the city’s fine dining scene
J
oppa might seem an unlikely place to discover one of the world’s most prized ingredients but when Edinburgh chef Campbell Mickel heard that a local woman had found what she thought may be a rare white truffle (known as the diamond of the truffle kingdom) in her garden, he was in the car in seconds. That very white truffle is the star of the show in our lavish meal at Campbell’s new Stockbridge restaurant Merienda but it is by no means the only precious flavour presented to our lucky palates. Serving artfully assembled Mediterraneaninspired small plates, the elegant yet unfussy eatery on North West Circus Place seats just 20 diners, allowing Campbell and his team to provide the most personal service you’re likely to get in the capital. Tempted away from Michelin-star winning restaurant 21212, chef Robbie Probert is Campbell’s right hand man in the kitchen; while front of house is the delightful dungaree-clad Paulina who is as passionate as she is knowledgeable about the food and wine on the menu. And there’s plenty for her to get excited about. The lengthy menu features a monthlychanging roster of dainty but delicious dishes designed to allow diners to create their own tasting menu. Our favourites include a decadent meaty Ox Cheek Gateau with Turnip Fondant, £7.50; that wonderfully white-truffle blessed Hot Potato, Parsnip and Truffle Air, £6.50; and the most flavourful, creamy, salty Cullen Skink with Sauté Potatoes and Chive Oil, £8. For dessert, we have a silky crème brulee, £4.50; and opulent orange chocolate mousse with gingerbread, £4.50.

“NO STIFF WHITE LINEN OR UPPITY STAFF; JUST GREAT FOOD, WONDERFUL WINE AND A WARM, FUN ATMOSPHERE”
The accompanying wine list features some of the best wine we’ve ever tasted, many served by the glass and most at ridiculously affordable prices. The food and wine are easily as good as anything on offer at the finest gourmet restaurant but there’s no unnecessary ceremony or pretension here. No stiff white linen or uppity staff; just great food, wonderful wine and a warm, fun atmosphere. Go, wear trainers, make a noise, it’s all fine here. Just don’t shout about it too much afterwards. We have a feeling it’s going to be hard enough to get a table here soon as it is. 30 N W Circus Pl, EH3 6TP, Tel: 0131 220 2020, eat-merienda.com

83 HANOVER STREET Amanda Southey gets a flavour for Chile
A
relatively new arrival to Hanover Street, this funky little restaurant blends a winning combination of Scottish produce with Chilean flavours. It’s the first dining project from former Gleneagles restaurant manager and owner of the popular 99 Hanover Street, Juan Jose Castillo Castro, and judging on first impressions alone, it’s a great start. The menu offers an array of small plates, ideal for sharing. The lovely waiting staff advised us that two ‘Bites’ and three ‘Plates’ would be enough for two. Highlights included the pumpkin bread with Chilean salsa, £4, and pork belly with Roquito pepper jam £6. Delicious. For main Plates, we loved the spice rubbed skirt steak, broccoli puree and green pebre, £11, and super flavoursome grilled swordfish and chorizo skewers, £12. This is a fabulous new addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene with a great relaxed vibe and tasty food. I can’t wait to go back. 83 Hanover St, EH2 1EE, Tel: 0131 225 4862, 83hanoverstreet.com
THE WINE HOUSE 1821 Amy Falconer finds the perfect spot for wine lovers
L
ocated within a Georgian townhouse just a stone’s throw from the Edinburgh Playhouse on Picardy Place, the sophisticated Wine House 1821 is a joint venture between restaurateur Sep Marini (of Tony Macaroni fame) and one of Italy’s most renowned wine houses, Zonin Wines. It’s a great bar to help you discover some delicious new wines and with over 30 available by the glass and 100 by the bottle, you’re spoilt for choice. Feeling slightly overwhelmed, we let the sommelier take charge and ended up drinking some of the most incredible wines. If you’re not a wine lover, they have cocktails, a good range of spirits and Italian beers. There’s also a great selection of Italian sharing platters, from £7.95, and light bites such as mixed crostini £5.95. I highly recommend the Antipasti Combo Platter – a delicious selection of ham, salamis, cheese and grilled vegetables, £19.95 for two people. 4 Picardy Pl, EH1 3JT, Tel: 0131 557 1821, winehouse1821.co.uk. *Quote i-on when booking to get a sharing board and wine flight for just £20*

l Cartel Casera Mexicana is making waves amongst its fellow street food venues in the student area of town. Sister restaurant to the ever popular El Cartel on Thistle Street, the vibe is the same – cool, understated and relaxed – but, if anything, this younger sibling is quite grown up for her age; bigger and airier thanks to the grandeur of high ceilings and huge windows. Pretty much everyone drinks frozen margaritas here. Made with Don Julio tequila, flavours change daily and on my visit the peach, blood orange and classic Tommy’s are all dangerously moreish. Apart from the margaritas, El Cartel is all about sharing. If you like spice, you’ll love the Bombers, £5, four delicious jalapeño, cream cheese and black onion seed balls. The Guacamole National, £5.50, is also superb. Made with sheep’s milk cheese, pomegranate and spring onion, it’s served with crispy plantain chips. The hand-pressed tacos are made to order. We try Carne Asada – two melt-in-yourmouth flat iron steak tacos with arbol salsa, avocado, spring onion and dried cherry tomato, £6.50 - and Baja Cod fish tacos, £7,

that come with pomegranate radish, morita chilli and adobo crema – add one of the hot sauces for an extra kick. Homemade ice cream (chocolate and chilli is delicious) or sorbet (mango and mescal is sublime) is on the menu for dessert but with such an extensive range of tequilas and mezcals on offer, you could forgo the sweetness and experiment with a shot or two. The restaurant operates a no-bookings policy but with every table gone and people willing to wait, I suggest you do too. El Cartel is fast, tasty and fresh Mexican food at its best. 15-16 Teviot Pl, EH1 2QZ, Tel: 0131 370 8189, elcartelmexicana.co.uk

BIT AT THE BACK
I WAS APPROACHED BY A HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR TO OPEN A BAR FOR HIM AND THE OPPORTUNITY WAS TOO GOOD TO REFUSE”
I WAKE UP... ...at 8am, when the first of my many alarms goes off. For breakfast, I’ll have porridge with peanut butter at home, or whatever’s on the specials board at Twelve Triangles in Leith. WORK STARTS... ...my first priority is to get my emails open and rattle through them so I don’t need to check them again until lunch time. I always try my best not to be glued to the computer screen. A TYPICAL DAY... ...I’ll usually spend the morning in Panda & Sons, then after lunch, head down to Hoot the Redeemer. I’ll also check in with my mum who runs our other business, the boozy ice cream brand, Senor Scoop. Then, in the evening, I’ll head back down to Leith to work behind the stick at Nauticus. IT ALL BEGAN... ...five years ago, when I opened Panda & Sons with my close friend Sam Chapman. Two years later, we launched Hoot The Redeemer and our latest concept is Nauticus with Kyle Jamieson who I have known for years. We wanted a real Scottish focus, with as many Scottish-owned brands and products as we could find.

AND THE WORST... ...that we don’t have 36 hour days and nine day weeks on this planet! My life is seven days’ work at the moment, it’s tiring but I love it.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… bar director Iain ‘Yanda’ McPherson
THE BEST PART OF MY JOB... ...Is getting to work with some amazing people. It’s so important to hire and work with good personalities.
CAREER HIGH… ...is probably the opening of Duello bar at Simone restaurant in Los Angeles. I was approached by Joe Russo, one half of the Russo Brothers, directors of the past two Avengers movies, to open a bar for him and the opportunity was too good to refuse. AFTER HOURS... ...I don’t often get home from work before 3am so I try to watch a bit of TV to unwind before shutting my eyes. I’m currently hooked on American Vandal. IN 10 YEARS... I’d like to be semi-retired and work in my own small bar with just me behind the bar.
