From the purveyors of the most unusual, HENDRICK’S® GIN
MINISTRY OF MARGINALLY •••
SUPERIOR TRANSPORT •••
LOOKS TO MAKE TRANSPORT ~ ~ MARGINALLY SUPERIOR ~ ~
CUCUMBER FACT Forget what you’ve been told the CUCUMBER is not a fruit or a vegetable; it is actually a portal into another dimension.
For too long commuters have suffered a claustrophobic life of caffeine, crowds and cantankerous pushing and shoving. But TODAY the head of the newly formed Ministry of Marginally Superior Transport (MMST) announced a series of trivial, but delightful, improvements to give commuters a slower and more pleasurable journey. Speaking from @ H e n d r i c k s g i nU K
his bathtub in Girvan, Scotland, Head of the MMST, David Piper, declared the opening of ‘Dawdle Hour’. “Commuting can be deeply unpleasant, mainly due to the stifling conditions and sense of urgency. By removing both of these problems we will create a happier world” In response to questions about whether the ministry was affiliated with Hen-
drick’s Gin, David replied - “Yes, of course we are - it’s lovely” before chewing the head off a cucumber and walking away giggling.

THE HENDRICK’S
GUIDE TO
TRAVEL ETIQUETTE PANIC! PANIC! Society is in tatters! Newspapers are frequently discarded on train carriages, antisocially loud headphone use is rife and standing on the wrong side of escalators is up by a shocking 2%! We are caught in the belly of a pig called pandemonium (also known, somewhat euphemistically, as ‘modern travel’). What is that I hear you screaming? ‘How can order, fair play, and tranquility be returned to our daily journeys?’ Well, I am very glad you asked, as if you hadn’t, this rambling introduction could have continued forever. The answer is simple: manners, manners, manners. Here are 7 simple rules to ensure you are a polite passenger who will be loved and admired by your fellow commuters.
1. When a new passenger enters your carriage, shake their hand and ask if you can make them a tea or coffee. Put them at ease by introducing them to the other passengers. In London it is considered very rude to ignore strangers on trains. 2. If the ground of the platform is not clean, throw down your jacket to protect your fellow travellers’ shoes. 3. Recite an Edward Lear poem at every stop that has a V in it. 4. Only make the carriage sing a Gilbert & Sullivan song if they are in the right mood. 5. If someone is eating fried chicken on the bus, offer them a picnic hamper and escort them to the nearest green. 6. Practicing your alpine horn playing is only acceptable during non-peak hours (spying is not acceptable during nonpeek hours). 7. If the music from your neighbours’ headphones is audible to you, they must pay a royalty to the musician for public performance. Simply tap them on the shoulder and politely ask for a flat fee of £200.53. @ H e n d r i c k s g i nU K
8 HIGH
QUALITY
REASONS TO LIE 1. Because someone that size is likely to react violently. 2. Because if you do not locate and recover the precious stones, the kidnappers will certainly not release your pet ermine. 3. Because you are a rather fabulous storyteller, and frequent lying only helps to improve your craft. 4. Because not everyone shares your taste in facial hair. 5. Because the third day of hiking Mount Everest is neither the time nor the place for honesty. 6. Because you’ve already lost the one ear. 7. Because the WEDDING is tomorrow, for heaven’s sake. 8. Because being in a body cast is difficult enough.

NEW COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
i-on this month
i-on magazine has always championed all things Scottish but mostly the other nice things in life that have nothing to do with tartan, castles and haggis and in this issue we go all out to show you that there’s a lot more to our small and mighty country than meets the eye. In fact, we’ve even dedicated a whole feature to the Weird and Wonderful with some quirky places to stay and fun things to see and do (p40). We also shout about the world of Scottish textiles on page 76 and meet the new generation of Scottish distillers producing seriously good spirits with passion on page 46. And because, after all, Scotland wouldn’t be Scotland without a stunning castle or two, we go behind the doors of the historic Borthwick Castle which has been lovingly restored into a luxurious, exclusive venue that’s up there with the best of them (p114). This month’s competition comes in the form of wrist candy at its finest from a Scottish watch brand that’s making waves internationally. We’re offering the chance for one lucky reader to win his and her Kennett watches. Turn to page 14 to see how to
enter and to learn more about the brand. Our congratulations also go to last month’s competition winner, Caroline Murray, who won a luxury break at Mains of Taymouth Country Estate in Perthshire. We also have lots of reader offers for food and beer pairings, festival tickets and more. Until next month, enjoy i-on.

This month he’s in action at Archerfield Links, East Lothian, from 19-21 August in the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open. Here he tells us about his love of golf and his biggest accomplishments. “My late father, Bob, was my only coach and inspiration. He was a great man and his teaching and words of wisdom were incomparable. “I now play golf for both business and pleasure - when I’m not at tournaments, I’m playing socially with friends. We moved from my hometown Largs in Ayrshire to Virginia Water, Surrey, early in my career for ease of travelling. It meant I could spend two days at home between tournaments. Thankfully, life is less hectic now with a typical day starting with walking the dogs at 6.30am and then

if Suzanne, my wife, is going to play tennis I might wander up to Sunningdale Golf Club for breakfast. We’ll then enjoy lunch together and chill out afterwards. Dinner is with our son and two daughters, all of whom still live at home, and then it’s a box set in front of the TV. “I would say my biggest professional accomplishment to date is captaining Europe to victory in the 2002 Ryder Cup. It was such a privilege to be captain. And when I’m back in Scotland I love to play anywhere in Ayrshire or watch tournaments in St Andrews - from the balcony of the chief executive’s office at The R&A in St Andrews you can enjoy a great coffee whilst taking in the stupendous view of the Old Course.”

hen Zimbabwe born, London raised singer Eska Mtungwazi’s self-titled debut album was nominated for the Mercury Prize last year, it didn’t seem in any way out of place. A stripped back and mellow, minimally composed record, it focused on her striking, lustrously soulful vocal, as augmented by a production team which prominently featured cult electronic musician Matthew Herbert. Yet what was really special about Eska’s nomination was just how uphill a struggle it had been for her to reach this point, and how much of a track record she had built up behind her without hinting at how much of a unique talent she was in her own right. At the point at which the Mercury Prize nomination had come through, Eska was already 44-years-old with a world of experience under her belt. It was gratifying to see because it demonstrated that older artists still get to make a great first impression and just like the two most recent Scottish Album of the Year Award winners, Kathryn Joseph and Anna Meredith, Eska is an inspirational example to all of the maxim that talent will out if you work hard enough at it. There’s no small irony in the fact that, beyond musical success in her own right eluding her for a couple of decades, Eska has enjoyed great success on her own
terms. Coming from a musical family, she started out by learning to play the recorder, and by the time she was in her teens she was writing songs for the church choir she was a part of. She’s not just a singer but a multi-instrumentalist, playing piano, clarinet and a range of percussion instruments. Her first serious group was London jazz outfit Quite Sane, and she’s appeared as a backing singer with artists as diverse as Nitin Sawhney, Grace Jones, Bobby McFerrin and Zero 7. She also has a maths degree from the London School of Economics and was a new mother around the time that the Mercury nomination blew up around her; a litany of quiet achievement which suggests that her discovery was inevitable. Eska will be appearing as part of the Edinburgh Festival, and as part of Summerhall’s Nothing Ever Happens Here programme of live music. There will be gigs throughout the month at the multi-arts venue as part of NEHH, rivalling the Edinburgh International Festival’s programme for the best selection of contemporary music during August; other artists appearing include Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, Grandaddy, Richard Dawson, White and Kathryn Joseph. Eska plays Summerhall, Edinburgh, 26 August. Her selftitled debut album is out now. www.eskaonline.com. 39

hey say a man’s home is his castle but what about when it’s not; what about when it’s a Kyrgyzstani tent on a farm in Orkney or a ‘60s film set caravan up a tree in the forest? Both are bona fide accommodation options that you can book, right now. The latter is set in a forest, near Rhynie, Aberdeenshire and goes by the name of Bogancloch Treehouse. Owned by an actor named Jake Williams, the setting starred in a film which went on to win an award at the Venice Film Festival. Yours for just £17 a night on Airbnb, don’t expect the Ritz; there’s no electricity or shower or toilet but the views are great. If that’s roughing it a bit too much for your liking, The Bus Stop in Gifford heads towards the luxury end of the spectrum. Hot tubs, swanky bathrooms and outdoor terraces are the order of the day here on the beautiful contemporary conversion of an old single decker. There’s a mild air of discombobulation when your accommodation looks like it’s about to drive off but unless there’s a steering wheel hidden in the cosy looking double bedroom, it’s going nowhere. If you’ve ever fancied running your own version of Black Books then there’s something for you too; The Open Book in Wigtown is the nation’s first ever bookshop 41

With all this and country pursuits too, a family break at Gleneagles can be as jam-packed or relaxing as you’d like it. The hardest part will be choosing what to do first. Speaking of grown-up versions; how about a tree house? Not a few planks strapped together to make an elevated death trap, a proper house… in a tree. Tree Howf perches in an old ash, peering onto the Ochil Hills from Dunblane, complete with electricity, gas and hot running water. The wonderland house is wrapped with a balcony which peaks with a viewing platform to gaze across the countryside with a glass of vino. There’s something very Disney about it, and it’s marvellous. Walking in the footsteps of abbots, the Scriptorium in Fort Augustus on the shores of Loch Lomond was once the ‘writing room’ of an abbey’s monastery.

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL TRADITIONS KIRKWALL BA GAME You won’t want to miss this if you happen to be in Orkney over the festive period. Played for over 200 years, this ball game pits the ‘uppies’ against the ‘doonies’ in what’s ostensibly a 350 man game of rugby which kicks off when the cathedral bell strikes one. MOFFAT SHEEP RACE Racing sheep through the town centre of Moffat is remarkable enough in itself, one of those crazy traditions that’s been around for hundreds of years. Except that it’s not; strapping a dummy jockey onto a few unwitting sheep and racing them through the streets started in 2012. MCMARS The tiny Highland village of Glenelg is the only place on the planet to be twinned with a place on Mars. Sweeney’s Bothy
Sweeney’s Bothy interior
Inside, the religious heritage is obvious but amidst the gothic features is a new lease of luxury, a far cry from the presumed austerity of its past life. Over in the chapel is a deliciously sacrilegious swimming pool (pictured on previous page) while the bedroom’s vaulted ceiling and stained glass window offer an ethereal atmosphere, at least eight out of 10 on the quirk factor. Finally, when it all gets too much, answer the call of isolation and head to the craggy west coast island of Eigg to lap up the tranquillity and escapes of modern life during a peaceful stay at the stunning Sweeney’s Bothy. The contemporary self-contained bothy has all the creature comforts one would need and a mind blowing view, making it a favourite with artists in search of some quiet inspiration. The tiny island is home to only 87 people but that doesn’t stop it having a local pub; The Whales Head is quirky enough in itself to make this list, a converted outbuilding is now a great fun community drinking den for locals and visitors.

Strathearn distillery
here are few people alive today who will know just how the pioneers of Scotland’s first distilleries felt watching the smoke from the first peat fires billow from pagoda chimneys or the taste of aged spirit from the first filled casks. But there are a few. Some of the most distinguished distilleries have had more than 200 years to mature, but to Scotland’s young crop of craft distillers, age is just a number. If anything, the energy of youth is the ideal tonic for creating something they hope will last just as long. You can take Caroline Bruce-Jarron’s word for that. “We do like to think that we are part of a new heritage in the drinks industry in Scotland,” she tells me. “On a more personal level, every generation of the farm has left their legacy in advancements to the business. We see this as our legacy to the future generations to come.” The Jarron family has worked the land at Hatton of Ogilvy farm in Angus since the early 1900s. Horses and ploughs eventually made way for combine harvesters and solar panels - and a potato vodka distillery founded by Caroline and her husband, Graeme, in 2014. The arrival of micro-distilleries, Caroline tells me, has driven consumers to be more aware 47

of what they drink and the quality of it, moving away from mass-produced liquors to handcrafted spirits like Ogilvy vodka. “People already look for provenance in their food, so why not do the same with spirits? Every step required; from growing the potatoes, harvesting them, grading them, distilling them and bottling is done on the farm.” The young husband and wife team can even tell you from which individual field the potatoes came from before they were distilled. How’s that for provenance? Similarly, garnering a reputation as the only distillery to source all of its botanicals entirely in Scotland, Crossbill Gin is one of a kind and in more ways than one. With the air of a Western film set, the rugged wooden shed that houses the still is nestled in the middle of remote ancient Caledonian forests in the Cairngorms, the only place that one of its most important ingredients can be found in abundance. For founder Jonathan Engels, the shedcome-craft distillery is a labour of love after

years of painstaking work to revive the very thing that makes it so unique - fresh Highland juniper berries. “I started making Pincer Botanical Vodka in Glasgow over 10 years ago. The gin came after that but it took me five years to achieve a sustainable Scottish juniper supply,” says Engels. Centuries ago, it was sent to the Netherlands to make jenever, gin’s older relative, but the demand for it petered out, until now. Once Jonathan harvests them, the berries are within five minutes of the still in which, keeping in harmony with how the juniper grows, Crossbill distills small batches of gin each year.
FEATURES
“Small batch also means that you can take more risks so there are some really great spirits being produced.” As the old saying goes, good things come in small packages but can small-scale ventures like his stand the test of time? “I don’t see why not”, he beams. At Strathearn Distillery, as with Crossbill, size really matters. Opened in 2013, it bills itself as ‘probably Scotland’s smallest distillery’ and has already gained icon status with whisky buffs. As owner Tony Reeman-Clark tells me, small-scale distillation of whisky and gin means the process can be slowed down for maximum effect on quality and taste. “We have no spirit safe so all the spirit work is done by taste and smell. Our spirit off the stills is in demand as it tastes so good - no waiting for years in a cask to ‘correct’ the distillation.” But what of age? Is youth a hindrance when compared with the centuries of knowhow handed down through the generations of stillmen at more established distilleries? For Strathearn’s 22-year-old distiller Zak Shenfield - recently crowned Scotland’s Young Distiller of the Year’ - it’s more a talking point. It’s clear from the off that he is just as passionate about whisky as someone with a lifetime’s experience. The art of distilling in Scotland has come full circle with Zak and his ilk forging new paths within the industry for others to follow, just as the pioneers of the first successful commercial distilleries did two centuries ago. But as new technologies slowly start to take

over, it’s the small distillers who are passionate about keeping the traditions of their craft alive. “I hope one day to be able to pass on my knowledge to someone who truly cares about the history, romance, tradition and quality as much as I do,” he says. “I hope that they will do the same.” 49

Walking into the personal shopping area in the Princes Street store in Edinburgh, away from all the hustle and bustle of frantic Saturday shoppers, I felt instantly at ease and important – the focus for once really was on me and the customer service was fantastic. My stylist, Claire (pictured), took me to the private dressing suite and talked me through the rails of complete looks tailored to my brief. It was refreshing, exciting and I couldn’t wait to start trying them on. She got it spot on, challenging me with new looks and enhancing others. or some Scots, a fortnight in Tenerife spent horizontal on a sun lounger soaking up the rays with a cold beer in one hand and a good book in the other, is a firm fixture in the annual holiday calendar. But many others are trading in their relaxing break in the sun for an opportunity to work on themselves away from home, physically or mentally. Be it a yoga and surf camp in Morocco or a cycling holiday taking riders through the undulating hills of Tuscany, there is a clear trend emerging for holidays which offer more than a good tan and a great haul from Duty Free. 64

SUCCESS STORY Paul lost 18kg over 16 weeks (2.9 stone) I was approaching a Big Birthday (whisper: 50) in the worst shape of my life. I had kicked off my DIY “10 years younger” in good time and was enjoying good diet and exercise. Then disaster struck; I fell ill for a couple of months and knew my big target was blown. By sheer luck I bumped into an ex-colleague who looked totally transformed in just the few weeks since I last saw her. Her secret? Alevere! So I was straight on the phone to The Private Clinic in Glasgow. From that moment I knew I had made a good choice as their support was excellent from the off. I felt immediately relaxed and in safe hands. I took to the nutritional elements of the programme right away. I never felt hungry or unwell. I enjoyed all my meals and my energy levels were actually through the roof! The treatments were always a fun part of the programme, and I looked forward to my weekly appointment at the clinic, and the monthly medical checks with Dr. Connolly. I always felt listened to, and cared for, with nothing but my best interests at heart. Occasional dips (lifestyle challenges like working away and parties) were well managed and the team ensured my progress was always driven forward. I am happy to report that, with Alevere, I reached my makeover goals, and my family were amazed at the “surprise reveal”. I cannot thank them all enough for all their support. Just the tonic HOW TO KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED THIS SUMMER
H
umidity and heat can play havoc with your skin so it’s important to keep on top of your skincare routine. Louise Marchesin, the in-house beauty expert at Skinade, shares her top tips to keep your skin hydrated home or abroad.
As the saying goes, ‘you are what you eat.’ It’s also true when it comes to the supplements you take. Using a skincare specific supplement like Skinade can hugely help. Designed to work synergistically with its six key ingredients, it helps your skin's hydration levels from the inside out.
3
Moisturiser is your first defence against the environment after SPF so choose one that protects your skin against free radicals. Dermalogica Active Moist works wonderfully during the warmer months thanks to its light, oil-free formula.
A face mist is a great way to ensure midday hydration when you feel your skin needs it. The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist is perfect for giving your skin a boost while on the go.
Your skin repairs itself at night and a serum packed full of hyaluronic acid will lock-in-moisture and help reverse the signs of ageing. Unlike other ingredients hyaluronic acid has the unique ability to adjust how much moisture your skin absorbs based on the humidity.
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that hinder the level of product your skin can potentially absorb. Try adding Liz Earle Gentle Face Exfoliator to your skincare routine. Using it at least once a week will ensure your skin can fully absorb the ingredients in the products you’re using.

LIGHT AND SHADE
DESIGNER SUNGLASSES MAY BE THE ULTIMATE FASHION ACCESSORY BUT WHEN THE SUN SHINES, QUALITY SUNGLASSES ARE ESSENTIAL TO PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS. HERE’S WHY.
I
t is as important to protect our eyes as it is our skin; think SPF for your eyes. UV light is not absorbed by clouds so there can be high levels of UV even on an overcast day and, over time, exposure to UV light causes damage to eyes which can result in ageing and changes to the eyes’ surface. Eyebrows help prevent some light from entering the eyes by casting a shadow but this is most effective when the sun is overhead. Unfortunately, Scotland’s location on the globe means the sun is at a lower position in the sky, directing harmful UV rays right at our eyes. All Black & Lizars’ sunglasses; designer, prescription or performance, have full UV protection, blocking UVA and UVB rays to EU
standards. Wearing sunglasses without UV protection forces the pupil to enlarge increasing your UV exposure. Investing in a quality pair of sunglasses can prevent problems in the future and will ensure a summer safe in the knowledge your eyes are protected. Black & Lizars stocks a wide range of sunglasses which can be made up to prescription including brands such as Oakley, Ray-Ban, Chloe and Chanel. hat’s your idea of a dream evening spent in style? Perhaps you’d be reclining on a velvet sofa in Gleneagles, sipping Champagne. Maybe you’d be seated on a soft leather chair in London, enjoying a slap up meal in Michelin starred restaurant Hakkasan. Or possibly you’d whizz across the world on a luxury jet to enjoy a show at the world famous Sydney Opera House. All of these experiences involve fabrics and designs that enhance your evening. And each one – the Gleneagles sofa fabric, the luxe leather seating used by Hakkasan and the curtains at the Royal Opera House – involves Scottish textiles.
Scottish fabrics are in demand across the world - our long heritage of innovation and creativity has helped build a reputable textiles industry with customers in over 150 countries. There are 9,500 people employed in Scottish textiles, and the sector’s annual turnover is £756 million. However, given all that our homegrown designers have got going on, it’s surprising we’re not more aware of their triumphs. But that’s about to change. Bute Fabrics, a contemporary Scottish textile manufacturer based on the Isle of Bute, has decided the time is right to start making more of a noise

about its homegrown fabrics that grace top hotels, restaurants and airports across the world. To help raise the profile of the Scottish textile industry, they’ve created a Scottish Marque to show the provenance of Scottish Wool products. “Our company is on the cusp of considerable change, and has an exciting future. One of our focuses is to tweak our use of our machinery to create a variety of products that will open us up to new markets,” says brand manager Wendy Murray. “We’re also working with Scottish designer Iona Crawford to create a range of prints based on art works at Mount Stuart, the Bute family’s incredible home on the island.” In addition to her role at Bute Fabrics, Murray is an invited member of the Scottish Textiles Industry Leadership Group, set up to raise Scotland’s profile and promote its strengths. “In Scotland we’re all about luxury, high quality products with longevity – that’s the message we’re sending out worldwide. We’re also working to promote innovation and

education in the industry. One of the issues we have is the aging workforce; the mills need new talent so we’re setting out to find it,” explains Murray. Another passionate exponent of Scotland’s textiles and interior design industry is Chris Hunt, director of Scotland Re:designed, an organisation that champions these sectors – along with the fashion industry – worldwide. “Over the last 10 years or so we’ve been building architecture to help new art college graduates and businesses connect, exhibit and showcase their work,” says Hunt. “We’ve developed annual showcases both in Scotland and abroad, bringing the designers, design journalists and buyers together. These showcases have taken Scottish talent to London, New York, Chicago and, most 81

recently, Hong Kong. Basically, we’re helping local designers demonstrate their talent.” So why does Hunt think Scottish textiles are so popular worldwide? “The winning combination is the mix of Scotland’s inspirationally stunning landscapes, along with the skills and innovation that come out of our prestigious art colleges and universities, plus our manufacturing heritage,” he says. “When I speak to global buyers and pitch the ‘made in Scotland’ brand, they are blown away by the skills, artistry and romance of companies such as MYB Textiles from the Irvine Valley, with its third generation lace designers.” When it comes to Scottish designers to watch, Hunt mentions with enthusiasm the talented Judy R Clark, who designed a studio 82
suite at Edinburgh’s G&V hotel, bringing local textile design to tourists. Hunt also expects we’ll see a lot more of homegrown designer Hatti Pattison whose original art and textile collection has found fans in the US, Australia, Holland and all over the UK. Her designs can also be seen at the world renowned five star hotel and restaurant The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye. With the likes of Hunt and Murray championing Scottish textiles and interiors, along with a surge of exciting new talent, I’m certain Scotland’s designers won’t stay a secret for much longer. DINNER @ YATAI IZAKAYA words Iona Shawcross • photo Susie Lowe
I
really like Japanese food but, when it comes to ordering, I can get tongue-tied and nervous about my choices. That’s why I was delighted to discover that Yatai Izakaya, the modern Japanese eatery on Langstane Place, offers omakase dining which means after a brief discussion on personal likes, dislikes and bill expectation, you leave the decision making to the experts and they plot the rest. Those more familiar with Japanese cuisine can chart their own path with the evening menu offering a great selection of sushi, sashimi and traditional hot dishes such as dumplings and tempura. My dinner date and I found it difficult to make our decisions but finally settled on kisetu no ceviche, lovely slices of raw fish cured in a gingery, citrus dressing, £20, kurodao nigari, black bream on a block of sushi rice, £6.50, watarigani makizushi, soft shell crabs wrapped in sushi rolls then deep fried, £16, Buta Barra, pork belly on skewers, £8.70, vegetable ‘yasai’ tempura, £8, and steamed rice, £3. The dishes arrive as soon as they’re ready, meaning the pork was scoffed before the rice arrived, but the food was so good it would have been churlish to complain. The star of the show, however, was the crab. I was initially a bit squeamish (you could 90
see their little legs) but one bite and all reservations were gone – just like the crabs. We’re already planning our next visit. Yatai Izakaya, 54 Langstane Pl, AB11 6EN, Tel: 01224 592355, www.yatai.co.uk.

IF YOU DO ONE THING THIS SUMMER… Try the brilliant Oor Wullie Bucket Trail. Over 50 sculptures of the famous DC Thomson comic character have been given individual makeovers by local and international designers. There’s a Tim Peake-inspired Astro Wullie, a nod to David Bowie, Harry Potter and many more and they’re dotted around the city. There are trail maps, iPhone and android applications available to track them down but can you find them all? Come the end of summer, the statues will be auctioned to raise money for the Tayside Children’s Hospital Appeal. A brilliantly wacky and inspired campaign we adore. www.oorwulliebuckettrail.com.
i-on recommends Prego. High end fashion comes first here at this gorgeous independent boutique for ladieswear on Broughty Ferry’s high street. Over the years, we’ve picked up ponchos with panache, eye-catching glittery bags and jewellery and thigh high leather boots.
Fancy a pint in Mennies? An oft-asked question in Dundee. The Speedwell Tavern (or Mennies as it’s known in honour of landlady, Mrs Mennie, who owned and ran the property for over half a century), is a pub and a city institution for good beer. Built by James Speed in 1903, the bar was taken over by Henry Mennie in the 1920s and remained in the family until 1995 when Jonathan Stewart took the reins. It is one of the few pubs in Scotland and the only one in Dundee - which has been listed for the quality of its interior. There is a main bar and L-shaped space, fitted with crafted mahogany, gantry, dado panelling and fireplaces - though chances are, even regulars haven’t noticed many of the finer details, given concentration is on conversation and ales. The real charm of Mennies though is the mix of clientele. Solicitors nod to past clients while plumbers, plasterers, cabbies, carpenters, doctors, decorators and the odd student drink the night away. It’s a bar without labels and we love it. www.speedwell-bar.co.uk. 93

Always eager to go one better, my husband recently announced he was going to trump my last charity challenge by abseiling off the Forth Rail Bridge. But as the day of the descent drew closer, he realised it was years since he last took to the ropes and his skills were probably now a little… ropey. So we booked a session at the Clip and Climb at EICA Ratho to gently ease him back into the harness. We were joined on the day by our endlessly energetic nieces, aged 12 and 13, and after a short training session we were let loose in the psychedelic adventure playground. The challenges ranged in difficulty, from a simple series of stepping stone style poles that gradually increased in size to a 10 metre high summit, to a highly competitive face-to-face wall climb race which we loved. A great place to spend an afternoon, whether you’re trying to tire out a couple of hyperactive kids or an overly competitive husband. Located within The Arches development at New Waverley on East Market Street, I was intrigued to see how (and if) the archway could be transformed into a functional space. But, one step inside Gannet & Guga and they had my undivided attention. And not purely because of the quirky space either. A gourmet sandwich bar offering truly unique mouth-watering combos such as hot smoked salmon, pickled beetroot, limed avocado and a snappy horseradish mayonnaise, £4.75, all made fresh to order, Gannet & Guga may be pint sized but the choices on offer rival any of the surrounding big boy chains. Another one of the many highlights include the lightest Vietnamese summer rolls. A recipe brought back from one of the owner’s travels, they’re healthy, tasty and downright delicious. Try the homemade dipping sauces for an extra zingy dimension. Offering healthy, fresh and flavoursome food, go early to bag a seat in the window or take away as you please. escribing their sound as ‘Ferocious ska with a Scottish death reggae twist - like the Blues Brothers on speed, crossed with Madness on Prozac’, local band Bombskare have been favourites on Edinburgh’s live music scene for years, but only recently grabbed the attention of a much wider audience when they won the BBC Four series, UK’s Best Part-Time Band. We caught up with the nine piece to find out the secret to their success. You were crowned the UK’s best part-time band - what do you think made Bombskare stand out? First of all there was no crown or elaborate headgear of any kind. We got a small wooden trophy that we’ve already broken. We stood out because we’re a big band with a big sound and we were on particularly good form on the night of the final. Are you tempted to jack in the day job to make music full-time? Of course, that would be a dream come true. Even bands
106
more successful than us would have trouble covering wages for nine people, it’s a tall order for anyone. Your winning performance was a ska version of Britney Spears’ Toxic. What made you choose that song? Rhod Gilbert advised us that our performance in the final needed to be spectacular so we decided to do something a little leftfield. The decision to play Toxic was controversial but we think anything can be improved with ska and the audience seemed to like it. What’s the weirdest gig you’ve ever played? We played at the bottom of an indoor ski slope once. But our strangest gig was playing with the Viking squads at Up Helly Aa.

JUICE WARRIOR OPENS AT THE WAVERLEY ARCHES
A Glasgow couple’s single minded commitment to incorporate plant-based nutrition into a busy lifestyle has led to them opening a brand new food and drink shop - the first of its kind in Scotland. Daniel Quigley and Megan Fitzgerald first started exploring the world of juicing and plantbased foods five years ago. They started experimenting with different juice combinations in a desire to boost health and energy levels.
A PERFECT BLEND They eventually started running their business from Megan’s mum’s kitchen and following help from the Princes’ Trust they were able to purchase cold-pressing equipment from the USA. For the past three years, they have been supplying Glasgow West End cafés and yoga studios and now they have brought Juice Warrior to the New Waverley Arches in Edinburgh. Everything is 100% certified organic and vegan. They offer 35 cold-pressed juice/nut milk combinations in total - plus smoothies, light food and raw desserts in store. The Waverley Arches Juice Warrior is one of 15 new businesses that will be operating from The Waverley Arches, a newly renovated row of historic Victorian arches on East Market Street - part of the £150 million New Waverley development in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

DINNER @ VITTORIA ON THE WALK What: Satisfying Italian classics from a family run mainstay Price range: Pastas from £9.95, pizza from £8.95. words Dean Newton • photos Susie Lowe

here are times in life when only pasta will do. What better opportunity then, to go and pay a visit to a family run institution that’s been serving up legendary Italian food since the ‘70s. Relaxed but hectic, cosy but bustling; the pizza siren call of Vittoria on Leith Walk had clearly been heard by many on the night we visit. Our fantastic, rambunctious waiter is everything you hope for on such an occasion and, Prosecco poured, he deftly guided us through the biblical menu. Difficult to choose with so much on offer but we landed on sharing the black fettucine and capesante as a starter. Squid ink pasta dressed with a deliciously zesty cherry tomato sauce, salty richness from some piquant pan fried strips of salami and then, dialling up the decadence, topped with sautéed scallops. It’s one of the most indulgent dishes on the menu, maybe not ideal as a starter, but it’s just what we came for and it wins on every level. Mains were an easier decision; Sophie was here to relive the memory of Vittoria’s “best in town” Linguine Alla Pescatora; ripe sunkissed tomatoes adorned with mixed seafood and on my side, pizza. The Calabrese served
with addictive n’duja sausage, red onion and mascarpone; just the kind of comforting Italian soul food we were in the market for and satisfying to the extreme. Our protestations against dessert were thankfully unheard when we were talked into a show-stopping ricotta cheesecake with pistachios and honeycomb, freshly created by the chef that day. An absolute treat of a dish that turned into a ‘to the death’ spoon fight for the last mouthful. Vittoria on the Walk, 113 Brunswick St, EH7 5HR, Tel: 0131 556 6171, www.vittoriagroup.co.uk.

BEHIND THE DOORS FROM A REFUGE FOR MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS TO A UNIQUE LUXURY RETREAT, IT TOOK THREE YEARS TO RESTORE BORTHWICK CASTLE TO ITS FORMER MEDIEVAL GLORY. HERE INTERIOR DESIGNER MELANIE BROWN GIVES US THE INSIDE SCOOP ON THE EXCLUSIVE VENUE 114

B
uilt in 1430 by Sir William de Borthwick, a Scottish ambassador to England and a renowned member of the ancient Borthwick family, Borthwick Castle is located in Gorebridge and known internationally as the finest Keep in Scotland. But it’s not just its 600 years’ history that makes this property special. Take a look inside the 11 lavish bedrooms,
grand hall and drawing rooms and it’d be hard not to be impressed by the sumptuous designer chenille fabrics, soft Scottish wools, Harris tweeds and hand-carved furniture. “The castle had been operating as a hotel since the late 1970s but there had been no major refurbishment since then,” explains Melanie, founder of Design Direction and 115

the creative mind behind the restoration of the project. “When the new owners took over they wanted to transform the castle’s run-down, sparse interiors into an exclusive venue which would appeal to the most discerning international clientele so my brief was to restore the castle back to the historic grandeur which once attracted the likes of Mary Queen of Scots and the great Scottish poet and author Sir Walter Scott, but also add in all the modern comforts for 21st century living. A daunting task but I relished the challenge. “The project began in autumn 2013 and required daily hands-on decision making so I relocated from the North East of England to live on the nearby Arniston estate, just a stone’s throw from the Castle. Thankfully the main structure of the building was astoundingly well preserved which made life slightly easier but the heating, kitchen, plumbing and electrical systems all needed renewal.” “We worked with local tradesmen, specialist historians and an international network of artisans and craftspeople and invested in new floors, heating, oak windows and doors. But for me the biggest investment was having the time to research beautiful items and travel the world to source furniture, wall coverings and artefacts in keeping with the castle’s history. Fabrics for soft furnishings, furniture and wall coverings have been sourced in partnership with Mulberry, Sanderson and Zoffany. Furniture and decorative tailoring is in partnership with George Smith, 116

whose founder, the early 19th Century furniture maker, remains a strong influence in the way the company’s craftsmen make and design its furniture with the best possible materials, hand built using traditional methods passed down through the generations. “We also sourced lots of items from nearby Edinburgh, including cushions by an artisan maker McKinley and Moth, occasional dining chairs from Georgian Antiques and rugs by Calzeat & Co. Admittedly, the logistics of moving furniture and fittings into a 15th Century castle with only spiral staircases were extremely difficult – some furniture had to be hoisted in through a balcony window to the State Room, most of it in pieces to be re-assembled on site – but it didn’t stop us, it merely slowed us down at times. “In keeping with the period of the building you’ll also find crests from historic figures directly associated with the castle embroidered into the Mulberry velvet upholstered dressing table chairs in each bedroom.
ABOVE: With a colour scheme of blues and purples, the Sir Walter Scott room subtly nods to Scott’s passion for wildlife.
The colourways of ochre and bronze, lime, sage and emerald green, purple and red are inspired by popular colours in Tudor times. “The main body of the refurbishment at Borthwick Castle was completed in summer 2015 and it’s amazing to finally share the end result with others – it really is a Scottish hidden gem. Saying that, we do have more exciting plans in the pipeline so watch this space.” Borthwick Castle is available for events and exclusive hire use. It’s also available for short stay breaks throughout August. To find out more Tel: 01875 820514 or visit www.borthwickcastle.com. 119

Caroline is the owner and spray tan specialist at Tropicoco Salon in the city centre. Here she shares her tips on achieving the perfect spray tan and maximising your glow time. What makes or breaks a spray tan? Client preparation makes a big difference. Exfoliation removes the old skin cells so that the spray tan sits on your new layer of skin. Choosing the right shade for your skin tone is also essential in getting a natural glow. What about those who prefer natural tanning? With the latest formulations you’d really struggle to tell the difference between a professionally applied spray tan and a real tan. And remember that prolonged tanning sessions and the use of sunbeds is directly related to skin cancer and premature ageing. Spray tanning is the quickest and safest way to achieve an instant tan without risks. 120

DINNER @ RIOJA words Susan Storie
R
ioja, as a wine, I like, but Rioja, as in the tapas bar in Finnieston, I absolutely love. OK, so I’m nailing my colours to the mast pretty early in this review but that’s because I see no point in leading you on that this compact and bijoux bar restaurant is anything less than excellent. Entering Rioja is like being transported to the back lanes of Barcelona, Palma or Madrid. The dining room and bar look unmistakably Iberian with functional furniture and a quirky lighting rig. The overall look is pretty cool, but without looking like it’s trying too hard. A bit like the Spanish themselves. Rioja offers both classic and modern tapas choices and while I’m an old-fashioned kind of gal, I’d thoroughly recommend giving the modern selection a go. They are still authentic tapas, just dishes that you’re unlikely to be familiar with or see anywhere else. I can heartily recommend the patatas Riojana, cubed potatoes filled with chorizo and pork belly, £4.90, Crujiente de morcilla, manzana y cebolla, a crispy ‘cigarillo’ of Spanish black pudding with apple and onion, £5.90, and huevos rotos con jamon Iberico, essentially Spanish ham, egg and chips, £4.90, which puts the UK equivalent to shame. The portions were well sized, easily big enough to share, and we were satisfied by 122
our selection. With regards to the liquid refreshment we had planned to stick to the one glass each rule but one sip of the Rioja Lagrimas de Graciano, £6.25, and a bottle, £24.95, beckoned. Well, when in Rioja… Rioja, 1116 Argyle St, G3 8TD, Tel: 0141 334 0761, riojafinnieston.co.uk.

he sight – and unmistakable sound – of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car plus power laps by Top Gear’s tame racing driver The Stig are just some of the highlights of a high octane festival coming to Glasgow this month. Called IGNITION, this brand new event - based at the SECC from 05-07 August - will be the most ambitious and complex motor show to be staged in Scotland. Organised by the team behind Top Gear Live, IGNITION promises to be nothing like a traditional motor show for as well as paying homage to some of the world’s finest motor sporting heroes, the event will showcase all aspects of motoring. It will even close roads around the SECC and SSE Hydro Arena to create Glasgow’s first ever street circuit. Scotland’s own F1 star David Coulthard will take to the specially constructed Street Circuit in the Red Bull Racing RB7, giving fans a unique opportunity to see and hear a Formula 1 machine up close. And there will be further track action from a wild selection of race, rally and supercars – as well as bikes – to make it one of the most exciting weekends on this year’s motoring calendar. 124

ST ANDREWS i-on loves… Mitchell’s Deli
To start, we really like the Jazz Sunday sessions. This month’s falls on 14 August. As the night is increasingly popular we suggest you book your place although you might squeeze in on the night, from 6-8pm. Musical offerings range between full jazz bands, soloist sax players and singing duos. No booking is necessary for the Friday and Saturday acoustic sets. We loved Stuart McKandie’s covers night which included headbobbers from Oasis, Runrig, Johnny Cash and dozens more. And looking ahead…Staff just took a sigh of relief after incessant Prosecco pouring for graduation, before gearing up for Christmas. Yes, Christmas. So popular is the deli, it’s time to get your orders in if you want a feet-up day
while letting professionals pamper you on 25 December with a three course, locally produced meal. Festive hampers are ready to order too, packed with fine wine, cheeses and meats. Mitchell’s Deli, 110-112 Market St, Tel: 01334 441396, www.mitchellsdeli.co.uk.

A S H O P P E RS GUIDE TO Thai Teak
Most of us bring something back from our holidays - a tan, pretty ornament, stick of rock. Roy and Sheila went a little further, bringing a large shop full of Thai furniture back to Scotland after falling in love with Thailand. Over the years, they have amassed an impressive collection of teak treasures, from ornamental rocking horses to tables, chairs, trinkets and photo frames. Roy travels to Thailand frequently to source the authentic pieces and won’t part with two giant teak wood elephants which are the first things you see upon entering the showroom. Venture into the courtyard for an undercover area full of garden furniture. The cafe is called Thai Teak House and is a real Thai dwelling, bought there and shipped to Scotland and rebuilt on stilts
like the original. The panoramic views alone are worth the 10 minute drive from St Andrews. You can choose from homemade scones and cakes, while lunches are in hearty portions and we thoroughly recommend the giant baked potatoes with oodles of filling options. But the star of the show is Sheila’s daily Thai dish. Thai Teak, Muirhead of Pitcullo, Dairsie, Tel: 0800 047 6009, www.thaiteak.net.
