his season marks the launch of the first spring/summer collection from St Andrews brand Tom Morris. And in a colour spectrum of dazzling blue, orange and white, it doesn’t disappoint. Inspired by the heritage of the eponymous four time Open champion, and one of golf’s greatest innovators, the award-winning luxury lifestyle brand has gained a cult following with chef Tom Kitchin, BBC presenter Dan Walker and Olympian Michael Jamieson all championing the brand. With such a rich heritage the brand also draws design inspiration from vintage finds or from the Tom Morris archive. Yet, just as Tom himself was an innovator and wanted to push back boundaries, each piece is given its own distinct handwriting. In this way, the brand strives to stay consistent in maintaining, developing and evolving its unique identity. The Tom Morris collection is available to buy online at www.tommorris.com and from the flagship store overlooking the Old Course at St Andrews.

Screenwriter Ronnie Mackintosh was a Detective Chief Inspector in the police before re-training for a career in film. Here he tells us about pursuing his passion at Edinburgh Napier University and working with some of Britain’s top stars…
It didn’t concern me at all that the vast majority of my classmates were younger.
I
never thought of becoming a screenwriter until I met the late, great, Frank Deasy – who later went on to win a Grammy for the television series Prime Suspect. We became good pals and I showed him a few things I’d written. He encouraged me to look seriously at screenwriting but my job, which I loved, was so full-on I couldn’t contemplate taking it any further. When I retired, I took a screenwriting night-class at Screen Academy Scotland. I loved it and applied for the MA Screenwriting, then the MFA (Advanced Film Practice). It didn’t concern me at all that the vast majority of my classmates (some of whom remain close friends) were younger. I wanted to learn and to test myself and for me, university study was the best way that I could immerse myself in a new career path.
The course doesn’t teach you to write. What it does do is bring you together with like-minded people in an environment where you have access to lecturers with valuable knowledge and experience. One of the highlights for me was the guest speaker inputs. In fact, it was during one of these that I met Scottish producer, Caroline Sinclair Kidd, who helped me find collaborators to make my first film, The Neighbours, which featured Peter Mullan. Having Peter in my first short film remains one of my proudest moments. I now focus on feature projects and currently have two optioned; one in the States and one in London, and I am developing two more with producers in London and Edinburgh. STATE OF THE ART
Le Miroir Magique by René Magritte’s words ∙ Joshua King
O
f all the works in the collection at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art - a collection crammed with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein and Tracy Emin - none are loaned out more than the four by surrealist René Magritte. The Belgian lived through the heyday of modern art during the first half of the 20th Century and prided himself on marrying painting finesse with illogical scenes. Perhaps the most famous is The Son of Man, a portrait of a bowler-hat-clad businessman with an apple in front of his face. It is now an ubiquitous image, plastered on postcards pedalled to gallery visitors the world over. Le Miroir Magique (The Magic Mirror) is just as playful. The oil on canvas image is of a pale pink hand mirror suspended over a tiled floor but what we see reflected back is not the visage of the mirror’s holder but rather two words: ‘corps humain’ (human body). This is a game, an unexpected image, and chief curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Patrick Elliot explains more: “His mother committed suicide when he was a teenager and this, not surprisingly, had a big impact upon him. He adopted the appearance of a bourgeois gentleman with his suit and bowler hat, but painted the weirdest pictures. “This image of the mirror is really about the business of representation and reality, and the gulf between words and images.”

14 | TALKING ABOUT
TALKING ABOUT Cable Wakeboarding
Cable wakeboarding? Am I going to get wet? Yes, very. Wakeboarding is the world’s fastest growing water sport and uses an overhead cable to pull you over the surface of the water. Imagine snowboarding but on water. It’s a great one for adrenaline junkies to bear in mind. Woah! That sounds all very Australian and not something I’d expect to find in deepest darkest Scotland… In deepest darkest Dunbar nonetheless. Foxlake Adventures is hidden away in woodland with a beautiful lake ready for extreme sports. It’s a social enterprise and the only place to cable wakeboard in Scotland so it’s worth getting your wetsuit on for. Sounds pretty awesome. Do I need experience? No, the park’s perfect for experienced riders but offers Learn to Wake sessions for complete beginners too, and to
anybody from as young as six. It costs £46 per adult and includes two 15 minute wakeboarding sessions on the water and an entire coaching session. Anything else going on at Foxlake? You bet. FoxFall is a low ropes obstacle course above water and sans harness. It’s the ultimate test of skill, balance and willpower. We’re thinking a cross between Total Wipeout and The Cube. Or, if spectator sports is more your thing you can cheer lakeside whilst chilling with a coffee. Sign me up now… Foxlake Adventures accommodate kid’s parties, stag and hen groups and corporate bookings as well as individual sessions. Check out www.foxlake.co.uk for more info. See you there.

Topping our reading list is The Dead Beat by Doug Johnstone. Firstly, because Doug was once a regular writer in i-on, secondly, Edinburgh is the backdrop for the novel, but mostly because we like the storyline. The Dead Beat is the dark story of an intern at The Standard newspaper who writes the obituary pages and ends up confronting her own troubled past. Available from 01 May, pre-order your copy from most Edinburgh bookshops, Amazon and Faber.

AS POLICE WOMAN words ∙David Pollock
T
here can be few more concrete examples of a slow burn career success than that of Joan Wasser, the singer songwriter otherwise known as Joan As Police Woman. In fact, whether or not she’s actually arrived at true breakthrough success or not is open to debate. Each of the three albums she’s released since her 2006 debut Real Life has built upon the critical and commercial success of the last, but it’s all relative – when 2011’s third record The Deep Field appeared it only just skirted the very edge of the UK top 40. At the slow but steady rate she’s been growing her audience, will this year’s fourth record The Classic be the one to finally break her through to wider acclaim? It certainly
starts with a declaration of intent in Witness, a stabbing slice of brassy, horn-and-Hammond laden soul which sees her declare “I will crack the motor/jam my stiletto into that machine… yeah, I took the power/gotta kick myself out of the dream”. In a pop musical landscape which finds itself opening up at the moment for women whose music is mature and individualistic, such words speak of a singer who’s been working hard at her career for some time and won’t let her talent go unnoticed. It’s the latest stage in a career which has seen the American Wasser collaborate with some of the most notable alternative artists of the last two decades as well as building
MUSIC | 21
Spring is in the air…
AGL her own name. Born 43 years ago in Connecticut, she studied in Boston where she launched herself into music in a big way. Throughout her 20s she was in a number of Boston bands, most notably the Dambuilders, and she ended the decade relocated to New York City and inducted as a member of the latterly Mercury Prize-winning Antony and the Johnsons. However, 1997 would lend her an unfortunate place in rock history, as she was the girlfriend of the legendary Jeff Buckley when he accidentally drowned in Memphis. In 2002 Joan As Police Woman came into being as a recording trio in New York City, and they would continue to be Wasser’s main focus through a decade which saw her support and play with Rufus Wainwright and record alongside Guillemots and Lloyd Cole. There are hints of each in The Classic, but its resonant mixture of slow burn gospel, torch singing and understated soul speaks most of an artist in the prime of her own self confidence who will hopefully start to get the broad attention she deserves very soon. Joan As Police Woman plays Oran Mor, Glasgow, on Monday 28 April.

THE RISE OF THE PRENUP – THE DEATH OF LOVE?
D
ebate rages in England following the publication of a Law Commission report recommending the recognition of enforceable prenuptial agreements. South of the border, such contracts have had scant recognition by Courts. Wealthy individuals feature frequently in the press bemoaning “gold diggers” who secure financial provision on divorce in spite of contracts entered into pre marriage. Scots law already recognises that couples have a right to contract to protect assets. Not until 1920 could married women own property at all and before that, contracts were essential to mitigate the effects of marriage on women of means, modest or otherwise; not so now thankfully. Such contracts are now binding, subject to certain safeguards. Agreements entered into by couples before they marry or partner civilly should not be regarded as harbingers of future failure. They provide certainty at the outset of a life built together but also preserve the entitlement to create future shared assets and wealth. Whilst the media may relish the machinations of the Kardashians and the Kutchers as they struggle to preserve wealth generated by celebrity in anticipation of usually brief marriages, prenuptial agreements can be of importance to more conventional couples. If one party has inherited or gifted family funds or shares in a family company they can be excluded from the scope of matrimonial property;
provision can also be made for what one party should receive on separation. There remains the limited ability to set aside such agreements but this protects against fraud, undue influence and unfairness. Such agreements give autonomy and control to individuals and provide predictable outcomes in the event of separation. They do not spell the death of love but instead if relationships do end, they can reduce conflict and the need for litigation.

TRAVEL
Franck-Xavier Arnold photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Managing beautiful hotels all over the world is a job some people can only dream of, but not Frenchman Franck, he moved to Edinburgh two years ago for the opportunity to run Rocco Forte Hotels’ award-winning Balmoral, discover a new country and live closer to his family in France. Here the general manager talks dream destinations and holiday romances. Have you ever had a holiday romance? Yes too many - they didn’t last long. The first thing in the suitcase is... my running shoes. They allow me to discover cities and destinations like no other mean of “transport” would or could. I’d never leave home without... an ID card and a credit card. I’ve dreamed of going to... South Africa. My photo album is… full of pictures of my family and friends in special places. I am very fortunate to meet wonderful people and discover unique places. What advice would you give someone about appreciating travel? When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Ruth George is the owner of Eden, an independent womenswear boutique in Stockbridge and the lady responsible for selecting and buying all its covetable international labels. Here she talks us through her own personal style choices. I’d describe my style as… casual. I wear my Selected Femme jeans with a smart top most of the time. The person whose style I most admire is… Debbie Harry. I love her unique, eclectic style. My favourite recent find was… Geluja on Raeburn Place. The shop is full of amazing candles and unique fanales handmade in Argentina. I’ve got a thing about… scarves, polo necks and dresses with pockets - but not necessarily all worn at the same time. The trend I’m definitely not buying into is… crop tops and meggings, aka leggings for men. They are just wrong. When it comes to style I think it’s important to… develop your own style and wear trends that work for you.

The team there pampered me before my wedding and throughout my pregnancy; I cannot fault it.

My trade secret is... a professional blow dry. It can have a transformational effect and is great in between cuts and colours. I also swear by a monthly glycolic peel for rejuvenated glowing skin. My beauty essentials are… my Hourglass under eye concealer, Tom Ford lip gloss, Nars multiple blush for an instant pick-meup, HD eyebrow kit for sculpted brows and a crystal nail file. The managing partner of the Edinburgh furniture store gives bespoke service to people searching for their dream bed and sofa, so take a seat or lie down and have a peek inside the interior life of Jane Miller. If money was no object, how would you furnish a home? I love colonial styling so I’d have lots of dark wood with pale walls and tonnes of natural light flooding in. There would be cushions, throws and rugs everywhere too. The interior I’ve been most impressed with is… Greencraigs near Aberlady. It’s stunning. What’s your favourite room in your house? We recently completed a major kitchen conversion and the space is amazing. We knocked our formal dining room and kitchen into one, the units are all white and the furniture is dark wood. There’s a huge rug on our stone floor and the most fabulous Chesterfield sofa from Sofas and Stuff. Biggest design faux pas people make… beige and being afraid of colour. My top interiors tip… don’t try to match everything.

YOU AND ME
Ben Gillespie and Jemma Blake photo ∙ Susie Lowe
E
ngaged to be married in September, Ben and Jemma have made working together a recipe for success. Here the owners of The Blue Bear café in Canonmills share their times of love and laughter whilst balancing their personal and business relationships. Ben on Jemma: “We met in our previous place of employment which was a recruitment company in Edinburgh and I instantly thought Jemma was strikingly beautiful, warm, funny and generous. Opening a café offering great tasting, quality food and service with a smile was something we’d always wanted to do and whilst it’s changed the dynamic of our relationship, we’re glad we’ve done it. Running your own business brings different pressures to a relationship but you find new ways of dealing with them. We’re much stronger as a couple now and always work as a team. And the best bit is that I get to work with my best friend every day. At harder times we’re always there to take the slack for each other too. The same applies in business and in our personal lives. Jemma has never, ever let me down and I absolutely know I can rely on her.” Jemma on Ben: “What I love most about Ben is that he’s very generous, friendly and gets on with everybody. He’s also got a great ability to get things done and always makes me laugh. Blue Bear café has recently celebrated its first birthday and setting up our own business has brought a real mixed bag of pleasures and a lot of memorable times. I reckon one of the biggest jumps was leaving our secure and happy jobs with all the weekends and free evenings to spend with friends and family, to being hands on in our own café for which we are entirely responsible for making it a success. But we’ve been able to see our dreams become a reality and it gives a great sense of personal achievement. It was a massive leap into the unknown, especially as first time business owners, but we did it together and we’re still smiling.”

Local heroes A GUIDE TO VOLUNTEERING
LOCAL HEROES | 37
Have you got a few hours to spare this week? Whether you’re interested in adopting a cuddly puppy, dancing at a music festival, djing for music mad kids or just having a quiet afternoon tea with a pensioner, you could give something back to the local community by volunteering. We’ve highlighted our suggestions of a few charities (in no particular order) who could do with a helping hand. Only enthusiasm and a big smile are required. words ∙ Aimee Stanton
1
Never mind The Liquid Room, the cool kids who really want to hear the freshest sounds are at The Sick Kids Hospital. Realise your DJ dream and step up to the mic for Lolly Pop FM or if vinyl spinning days are behind you but kids are right up your street, you can keep them entertained by playing cops and robbers, reading stories or helping out at meal times. You must be willing to dedicate two hours of your time a week for a minimum of six months though.
2 3
Apply for the envious title of strategic board game assistant at the Royal National Institute of Blind People. You’ll be involved with role playing games, fantasy, war and adventure games and of course, board games. Full training is given and you only need to dedicate a few hours a week on Tuesday afternoons/evenings. Lend an ear to an OAP and hear their wise words. Contact the Elderly aims to bring an end to social isolation and loneliness for older Edinburgh citizens. You could organise a tea party or just take them out one Sunday a month and strike up a friendship with someone who will undoubtedly have a tale or two to tell.

Fresh Start helps the previously homeless to rebuild their lives and is always looking for volunteers to help them decorate, garden and cook. Practical support in the kitchen is welcome and you don’t have to be a Masterchef for this role. Lothian Disability Sport constantly seeks volunteers to help at its sports clubs or at swimming galas and athletics competitions. Have a game with someone keen to play wheelchair basketball, archery or even bowls if you’re after a less invigorating sport. No training is necessary. Become a puppy socialiser with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. They’re looking for volunteers to train and socialise the pups in preparation for their new home with a deaf person. Food, bedding, toys, vet bills and other expenses are all covered so you only need to worry about where you’re next going on walkies. Puppy training classes are also included; the only downside is the heartbreak of giving your doggy back after 12 months.

Unleash your inner art critic and volunteer with The Travelling Gallery. The mobile art gallery road trips around Scotland to bring contemporary art to schools and the public who don’t have such easy access. If you’re too shy for public speaking, help behind the scenes and assist with marketing, digital development or carbon monitoring. They are now looking for volunteers for summer 2014. Join the revelry at one of the Edinburgh community festivals. Keep 07 and 08 June clear in your diary and join the bash at The Meadows Fest for live music and shows. Or if you’re free from 14 to 22 June, you can lend a hand at the unique Leith Festival for as long as you can spare. Help with the programme or be a steward and have a few days building community spirit.

Help the community and start off your volunteer work with a stint at Gorgie Farm. The 30 year old inner city farm is the kind of place where childhood memories are made and is actively looking for people to get involved with gardening or to assist with education and youth work. According to Cancer Research UK, every two minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer, so be a friend and volunteer at Maggie’s Centre at The Western General hospital. Maggie’s asks for a few hours a week as a ‘befriender’ or donate a weekend to one of their events. Check out their website for regular event updates.

Jo Kinloch Anderson gives us the lowdown on the kilt and choosing the right tartan...
H
ighland Dress is our national dress and the jewel in the crown is the kilt. It’s a clothing investment which stands the test of time and makes a statement of colour and design. Today kilts are made in shadow designs, tweeds and plain fabrics but tartan is by far the most popular, classic option. Wearing tartan isn’t just for those with Scottish ancestry either, there are several universal tartans for everyone to wear and the tartan you choose is completely personal choice. While some people like to understand their family history and choose a tartan relating to their mother or father’s surname, it is also completely acceptable to pick one just because you like it. Probably the more familiar tartans are Black Watch, Royal Stewart, MacDonald and Campbell as they are the largest clans. In recent years, however, we’ve seen a swing towards the more fashion styled tartans and in particular the grey shaded ones.
Tartan trousers are a stylish alternative to a kilt. In the traditional sense trews are a military tailored style of trouser that only has one seam down the inside leg and usually a white line down the outside leg. Proper trews are difficult to find these days and can be expensive. Kinloch Anderson tailor two extremely popular styles of tartan trousers (with an inside and outside seam), the more casual straight waistband trousers, or the elegant, formal high waist fishtail trouser that is designed to be worn at a formal black tie occasion. More formal fishtail trousers can be worn with the Prince Charlie jacket whilst the straight waistband trousers can be worn with a dinner jacket or blazer.

Spring is now well under way, but if you haven’t had the chance to update your wardrobe to include SS14’s hottest styles, the fashion experts at Livingston Designer Outlet are on hand to help, with over 70 leading brands offering discounts of up to 60% every day. The centre is Scotland’s largest designer outlet, with a fantastic range of high street and designer brands including Ted Baker, Kurt Geiger and Radley. It also has a cinema, adventure golf, restaurants and bars, all set in a modern and relaxing environment, with the added bonus of late night shopping until 8pm every Thursday.
Update last season’s pastels for spring with mouthwatering shades of spearmint, lilac and peach, and combine with patent and mesh layers. Keep thinking pink, as it remains the colour of the season.
The floral trend has been updated for the warmer months: dissected prints, 3D laser cuts, and embellished flowers add a futuristic twist. For a look that is really on trend, think matching head to toe florals.
Gothic embellishment is huge for SS14. Keep the look futuristic with sheer layers, flashes of bare skin and dark, glitzy adornments.
The SS14 catwalks borrowed heavily from the art world, with painterly prints and fearless brush strokes. To reflect this, go for statement dresses with artistic pops of colour.

BOLD COLOUR Adding a pop of colour to your make-up can transform a look. But whether you go for a pastel nail varnish at Nails Inc, a bright eyeshadow from Urban Decay or bold lipstick from MAC, what’s essential is healthy looking, luminous skin. Get the base right with the new Skin Foundation Stick from Bobbi Brown. Available in 24 skin tone correct shades, the new formula glides on to give natural looking full colour. Here Revlon Global artistic director, Gucci Westman, explains how to wear colour well. “For the Berardi girl (pictured), I wanted to create a subtle but impactful look. Skin was polished using Nearly Naked Make Up. Eyes had a touch of mauve colour to make it playful. Mascara on the top lashes and kajal in blue on the tear line, like a china doll but not so literal. I kept the brows natural and brushed up. The key element of this look was a really matte mouth using Revlon ColorStay lip liner in Red and Revlon’s new matte ColorBurst crayon in Striking Spectaculaire, creating a pronounced shape.”

ward-winning hairdresser, FREDDY ANTABI and his team, have recently moved to new premises in Edinburgh’s West End. In his funky new salon at 12 Melville Place, Freddy told us that the team has adapted its working practices to fit around clients’ schedules. “Many of our clients are busy professionals who prefer to spend their weekends having fun with their families, rather than with their hairdresser, so we felt it was time our opening hours became more flexible. We now offer late appointments during the week.” Fashion experts are predicting the era of long hair is over and this season is all about going short. Freddy and his team are offering free consultations for those considering taking the plunge but not sure whether to go for the Pixie, the Bob or the Lob (the long bob). If losing your long locks is too big a leap, then you could always opt for choppy layers, and still be on trend for Spring/Summer 2014. The highly-trained team at FREDDY ANTABI HAIR STUDIO are happy to offer their expert advice and pride themselves in listening to what their clients want, ensuring everyone leaves the salon looking great and feeling fabulous. i-on readers can enjoy a special offer of 50 per cent off colour and cut for first-time customers, and for those fighting the frizz, Nanokeratin straightening system is now only £70. TAKE THE CALLANETICS CHALLENGE, THESE ARE THE RESULTS...
“Taking part in the callanetics challenge was the best thing ever. I don’t enjoy exercising generally but callanetics has totally re shaped my body and I have lost 8.5 inches and dropped a dress size – a fantastic result. I feel so much more energised and I am walking tall.”
“After 20+ classes I have seen huge changes, not only in my body shape but I no longer have back pain. My posture has improved, my core is stronger and I feel more energetic. This is definitely an exercise class I will be keeping up and I’ll certainly recommend callanetics to my friends and family.”
“I am a mum to a 5 and 2 year old, a wife and work full time, so I saw the callanetics challenge as a chance to take some time out and do something just for me. I was shocked at my inch loss, especially around my thighs and tummy area. Thanks to Karin and the callanetics studio for the great opportunity.”
“For years I shunned all kinds of formal exercise, mainly because I found them uninspiring and ineffective. Now that I’ve found callanetics, I don’t know what I’d do without it. I’m thrilled with what it’s done to the shape and tone of my body - I’m even back in my skinny jeans! - all within a matter of weeks.”
The callanetics challenge is a programme of 20 one hour classes in a four week period. For more information visit www.edinburgh-callanetics.co.uk. Edinburgh Callanetics, 5/9 Craiglea Drive, EH10 5PB, Tel: 0131 447 8414 / 0784 8041070 www.edinburgh-callanetics.co.uk

TRIED AND TESTED Hot Vinyasa

tkatasana, downward dog and child’s pose... Lost in translation? I was too but when you’re a beginner and learning something new, isn’t everyone? Having read countless stories on its strength building and body morphing benefits, hot yoga is something I’d been considering for a while. However after a year of excess, I decided that 2014 was the year to do something about it. Dressed in my gym gear and armed with the obligatory towel and water, I stepped into the yoga studio at Meadowlark. Having not been able to touch my toes in years let alone strike some yoga pose, I’ll admit to feeling apprehensive. But whether it was the boho feel or friendly welcome from principal vinyasa teacher, Lindsay Rodgers, my instructor for the next hour, I felt instantly at ease. Mat in hand (hired from reception), shoes off and positioned at the back of the room I looked around to see women and men of all ages stretching out and relaxing before the class started and followed suit. Whilst some people might feel more comfortable if they have yoga experience, hot yoga level 1 is fine for total
beginners to do, but be warned this class is fast moving and challenging, especially for first timers. As well as a constant flow of poses for strength building, increased flexibility and building up core strength; you have the heat to contend with. The room is heated to between 30 and 34 degrees to help your muscles warm up faster and allow deeper stretches. It also helps improve circulation, relax joints and promote natural detoxing through sweat – something you should take as a given. The class is mentally and physically challenging but it’s highly recommended. Lindsay not only guides and helps you with poses but her calm approach inspires you to want to know more and do better. To really experience Hot Vinyasa and see the benefits, I’d suggest going for a block booking. Trust me, you’ll feel great after and wont have a worry in the world whilst your there. A single Hot Vinyasa 1 class at Meadowlark costs £12. A block of 10 classes is also available for £90. Meadowlark, 43 Argyle Pl, EH9 1JT, Tel: 0131 225 1220, www.meadowlarkyoga.com

e met through a mutual friend at a party in 2006 and hit it off instantly. We just clicked. Two years later whilst sitting under the stars on holiday in Albufeira old town, Portugal, Ronnie got down on one knee and proposed. It was very romantic and a complete surprise. I started crying with excitement and happiness. He’d picked the ring himself and it was gorgeous, it meant even more to me that he’d chosen it. And even though it was slightly too big, I didn’t want to take it off. “It was five years until we walked down the aisle; this was down to having our two little boys. But, it really did feel like the right time for us. The boys were a good age and we were delighted they could share our special day with us. “Our ceremony was in Gladsmuir church; we have a lot of family connections to the church so it was the obvious choice. We then went onto Craigielaw Golf Club for our reception. We used to go there when we first started dating and I absolutely love the location. It has fantastic views and is close to the sea. “I chose a vintage theme for the wedding with soft, neutral pastel colours. I’m quite a plain person and

wanted something that wasn’t too loud or garish. I loved the prettiness of the pastel colours. The flowers were gorgeous too. Our wedding party consisted of three bridesmaids (my sister and best friends), a best man, three page boys (our two little boys and our nephew) and three ushers. It worked out perfectly. “We had 70 guests during the day and another 60 at night because we wanted it to be a close, intimate affair. I think it made it feel more personal not having a huge guest list. In the evening we hired a DJ who did a fantastic job playing a set of ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s top tunes to get the dance floor jumping.“

Our favourite things We had a family friend sing for the guests arriving and I loved walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing all my family and friends. I felt so very proud and was pretty emotional but it was such an overwhelming feeling. The day was perfect and there’s nothing we would have done differently. After we spent a beautiful weekend at the gorgeous Macdonald Marine Hotel in North Berwick, a place we both love.

WEEKENDERS Mains of Taymouth words ∙ Nicky Howden
N
ever underestimate the power of a short break; a slice of we-time where you can recharge the batteries, and feel like you have had a holiday in just a couple of days. And so, with that in mind, we left the city for the picturesque landscape of Aberfeldy and ventured north to Mains of Taymouth country estate. At little over an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, Kenmore is the antithesis of a bustling city; a quaint village set on the banks of Loch Tay with pretty surroundings, good food, golf, hill walking and highland safari on its doorstep. For those who prefer the harder stuff, Dewar’s World of Whisky distillery, is a short trip away, is an education for mind and palate, and well worth a visit.

The Stables Cottage
The luxurious accommodation at Mains of Taymouth comes in all shapes and sizes but it was the traditional 19th century Mains Cottages in the pretty courtyard that caught our attention. Catering for two up to 10 people, the four and five star properties can come with everything from pool tables to saunas and outdoor hot tubs. Inside our new home from home, furnishings are simple, cosy and comfortable and it makes for a warming environment where you can kick back and relax. Self catering is the name of the game here and with well kitted out kitchens and barbecue areas in each garden you couldn’t want for much more. Especially with the onsite delicatessen brimming with freshly baked bread, artisan produce and infused olive oils and vinegars to add some extra oomph to your culinary creations. Eating out is also
an option though at the estate’s Courtyard restaurant and bar; a good spot to read the papers and play board games as well as dine out. A bubble of tranquillity, Mains of Taymouth is a place to enjoy some quality time together. And whether that’s with friends, family or a partner, a stay here is recommended. In fact we already plan to return and make a party of it in the Granary Court – the much lauded luxury five star cottage was once the owner’s private pad and is now available to sleep eight. Mains of Taymouth, Kenmore, Aberfeldy, Perthshire, PH15 2HN, Tel: 01887 830226, www.taymouth.co.uk. A minimum stay of three nights is required, prices from £420 for a short stay in The Bothy (sleeps two).

rom turquoise waters to great food and a buzzing nightlife, the Dalmatian Coast offers something for everyone. But for those looking to veer off the beaten track sailing Croatia is the answer. “There are special and enchanting places only accessible by boat in Croatia and sailing gives you the freedom to experience all sorts of unique cultural, traditional and historical aspects,” explains Tony Zucco of Get Away
Sailing. “That’s what makes a sailing holiday so unique. And whether you’re looking for a relaxing holiday on-board a contemporary yacht or prefer to take charge and skipper yourself from island to island, Get Away Sailing can cater for it all. “One of the must sees is Mljet National Park. breathtaking scenery. Its small Island of St Marija homes a 12th Century Benedictine Monastery where you can explore and even spot a Banded Mongoose. “Orebic is a great foodie destination famous for its wine region and renowned for its fantastic traditional dishes. For those looking for vibrant nightlife I would definitely say Korcula is the place to be. It’s where you’ll find Bar Massimo, an exquisite cocktail bar situated high up in a tower with access through a narrow castle-like staircase on the waterfront with spectacular sunset views out to sea. “The best time of year for a sailing holiday in Croatia is July to September. It doesn’t get hot like in the southern Med and although August tends to be a lot busier with tourists, it’s a better time for nightlife.
“Our boats sleep up to 12 people but our four cabin yachts for eight people tend to be the most popular for groups of friends, couples or even families. Depending on the age group travelling and their wants and desires, we then tailor the seven day trip to ensure it ticks all their relevant boxes. “The good thing about a sailing holiday is that no two days are ever the same and you can simply chill out on deck cruising to each harbour in style. Only three to four hours are actually spent sailing throughout the day with swim stops to secluded beaches and stunning bays thrown in.“ Prices from £450 per person. ICONIC EDINBURGH Gladstone’s Land words ∙ David Hicks photo ∙ Susie Lowe
G
ladstone’s Land on the Lawnmarket is a last surviving example of how people lived in the Old Town over 300 years ago. At one time this tall and narrow tenement was typical of buildings on the High Street, with a mixture of social classes all under one roof. There has probably been a building on this site since the royal burgh was first founded over 800 years ago, but the people most responsible for what we see today were merchant Thomas Gledstanes and his wife Bessie Cunningham who bought the property in 1617. The property they bought was probably built of stone with timber galleries sticking out from the upper floors. The Gledstanes set about extending their new building, adding a room on to the front of each floor and pushing about 23 feet out into the Lawnmarket. The stonework was of the highest quality and would have contrasted quite starkly with the older harled and timber buildings on the High Street. The outside stone staircase, known as ‘forestairs’, and the arches on the ground floor are very important rare survivals, once typical of most buildings on the High Street. The steps lead to a tight spiral staircase, which gives access to all the upper floors. Sheltered underneath or next to the stairs would have been a ‘cruive’ or pen for animals, perhaps a pig as you can see today. On the ground floor there would have been a shop.
But the fortunes of Gladstone’s Land declined with the rest of the Old Town in the Victorian period and by the early 1900s it was at risk of demolition. Then in 1934 the National Trust for Scotland stepped in and saved the building, converting some of its rooms to apartments for the elderly. As the restoration got under way, some remarkable traces of Gladstone’s Land’s former grandeur were found. Hidden beneath panelling and layers of plaster were painted ceilings and walls, fashionable decoration added by Thomas Gledstanes over 300 years ago. These can still be seen today in what is known as the Painted Chamber. DINNER @ GEORGE STREET BAR AND GRILL WHAT: Well executed food delivered with style in central Edinburgh. WOULD SUIT: Would suit happy shoppers and those preparing for an evening of extravagance. PRICE RANGE: Starters £4.95 to £7.95, mains from around £10. words ∙ Henry Le May ∙ photos ∙ Susie Lowe
E
arly March brings renewed optimism to the city with longer days and the possibility of sunshine. The promise of a long hot summer is tantalisingly close, although highly unlikely, and it’s also the time of year when Edinburgh’s restaurants begin to shake off the festive dust and get creative with spring menus. I always enjoy taking time to see what has changed in my favourite restaurants, but sometimes the omission of a classic is cause for lamentation. Luckily for me, the team at The George Street Bar and Grill has managed to retain all the culinary classics that one would expect to find on the city’s most distinguished epicurean thoroughfare whilst adding a new spin to the traditional grill menu.
Taking the corner position of George Street and Charlotte Square, the Crown Plaza Hotel has in the main been overlooked by George Street patrons; the addition of an entrance from the main drag has opened up this otherwise anonymous hotel restaurant and the Georgian interior has been stylishly brought into the 21st Century with muted monochrome walls and leather upholstery. The food is the star though and on a Monday evening my companion and I settled down to a veritable feast of mussels in white wine sauce with crisp French fries, half kilo for £7.95. The sauce was the right blend of rich cream and acidic wine with pungent garlic that cried out for some bread to be dunked in. We also had a pressed ham hock
DINNER | 89
terrine with a homemade piccalilli and tiny toffee apple to cut through the rich, salty ham, £7.50. Mains of beef followed; a very well cooked rib eye steak, £20.95, was accompanied by chunky chips, that were sadly a little flaccid, but the chargrilled meat was well seasoned and delicious. I’m always delighted to see Buccleuch scotch beef on a menu. Our other meaty main was an unbelievably tender serving of beef cheeks, £16.95, in a red wine jus; the accompanying mashed potato and spring greens were both rich and light enough to act as a foil to the complexity of the meat. A vanilla roasted pineapple and pistachio cake, £5.50, with rum and raisin ice cream, rounded off a fine meal for me while my Iberian companion opted for the Rum baba, £5.50, with raspberry ice cream which was “light, moist” and apparently so delicious I wasn’t able to try any. The wine list at George Street Bar and Grill is also reasonable and diverse with a good offering of old and new world wines; a Chilean merlot helped lubricate our meaty mains and a little espresso gave our meal the required full stop. LUNCH @ THE LIONESS OF LEITH WHAT: A new den for cocktail guzzling cool cats in Leith. WOULD SUIT: Hip diners after gastro grub. PRICE RANGE: Sunday brunch starts at £6.80. words ∙ Aimee Stanton photos ∙ Susie Lowe
T
here’s an inescapable transformation happening in Leith. It started with the Shore and now the ever endearing Walk is housing smarter drinking establishments and waving adios to its reputation as an area overrun by Trainspottingesque pubs. Now the hottest bar to join the pride is The Lioness of Leith. Neighbouring the hedonistic retreats of Central Bar and The Marksman, The Lioness more firmly resembles city centre drinking than back street boozer with its inimitable cocktail list and animal inspired interiors. My friend and I dined there on a Saturday afternoon from the 12 to 4pm brunch menu. Choose from slap up roasts to Eggs Irvine Welsh (scrambled duck eggs if you’re curious) to The Mary Moriarty, christened after the legendary Port O’ Leith landlady. I picked the latter - the name spoke for itself. I wasn’t disappointed by the local lass’ honorary dish either. It was a warm brioche bun with Scottish smoked salmon and poached egg, plus a nice little shot of Bloody Mary gazpacho dressing for my side salad, £7.50. My dinner date unashamedly picked the half chicken build-your-own roast, £9 and £3 per side. She was soon presented with
a somewhat over indulgent banquet tray with a mouth watering herb and butter rotisserie cooked half chicken complemented with Yorkshire puddings, lemon and thyme roasted carrots (perfectly crunchy) and rosemary and garlic roasted spuds. Without a doubt, big enough to feed two. They say there’s always room for dessert but sadly we didn’t have the choice on the weekend brunch menu. So to keep a sweet tooth at bay I naturally opted for an alcohol based pudding. The Sherbet Lemon martini, £6.50, was fresh tasting with distinct flavours of lemon, lime and fizzy sherbet syrup, and a good splash of citron vodka. ON THE GRAPEVINE

Richard Meadows, owner of Great Grog, gives his recommendations.
GOOD VALUE Cape Heights Viognier, South Africa 2011, £5.49 The amount of times I’ve had a Viognier and been impressed versus the amount of times I’ve been underwhelmed is probably a five to one ratio. This is soft, velvety, juicy and tropical with fruit flavours.
BAR SPY…
RISING STAR
Grab a drink and unwind at Clerk’s Bar on South Clerk Street. Specialising in slow cooked smoked BBQ style meats and a good selection of craft and cask beers, the chilled out neighbourhood pub also has live sports on TV. For more information follow @ClerksBar on twitter or visit www.clerksbar.co.uk
Opta White, Portugal 2012, £8.29 If you’d said to me “Portugal, white and good” a few years ago I would have scoffed but this is zesty and modern with citrus fruity slices.

CLASSIC

Blended with the finest ingredients to make original, yet classic, recipes created by world renowned Italian bartender Giancarlo Mancino, the range, priced from £25, is available exclusively at Harvey Nichols Wine Shop until 31 May 2014.
Rustenberg John X Merriman, South Africa 2011, £13 How on earth can a South African red be classed as classic? This new world wine is from an estate established in the 17th Century. It’s an immensely tasty red, big and friendly and blackcurranty and spicy from the oak.

THINGS TO DO ON A SUNDAY Forget a Sunday lie-in, it’s only two months until the biggest physical challenge of the year so get training. Tough Mudder, a 10 mile endurance and obstacle course designed by the British Special Forces, is coming to Dalkeith on 14 and 15 June. Challenges include swimming through pools of ice water and crawling under live electric wires. It’s more fun than it sounds... apparently. To sign up visit www.toughmudder.co.uk
Won’t get fooled again Admit it. You’ve fallen for one already this year, haven’t you? April 1st gives license to the mischievous everywhere to cause a little chaos, press included. Here are four you will never believe people fell for: In 1976 astronomer Patrick Moore announced that at 9.47am Pluto would pass behind Jupiter and produce a once-in-a-lifetime gravitational change. He told radio listeners to jump at the exact moment to float in the air. In 2005 the BBC announced the theme music of The Archers had been changed to a disco beat. In 1998 two American radio hosts joked Boston mayor Thomas Menino had been killed in a car crash. When Menino, who was on a flight at the time, could not be reached by telephone it caused panic across the city. The hosts were soon fired. In 1957 the BBC showed footage of a Swiss family gathering string pasta from a ‘spaghetti tree’ in the most famous hoax of them all. They said the harvest was huge because spaghetti weevils had been eradicated. Dozens of people called the Beeb to order spaghetti trees of their own.
did you know...? The animal rights group PETA asked the Pet Shop Boys to change their name to the Rescue Shelter Boys… Duo Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe politely declined.
