here can be few more beloved Edinburghers than Inspector John Rebus, and even fewer residents with a more macabre love of the city than his creator, Ian Rankin.

Now the Scottish Portrait Gallery has been treated to a portrait of the renowned writer, courtesy of two more Edinburgh men. Fellow writer Alexander McCall Smith commissioned Edinburgh based artist Guy Kinder last year to capture what is likely to become an enduring image of one of the city’s favourite sons.

Kinder, who is also a renowned filmmaker based here in the city, chose to portray the writer in a setting where both he and his fictional detective felt most at home - The Oxford Bar. Now the painting joins a pantheon of Scotland’s other literary lights on display at the gallery, including Burns, Scott, Stevenson and Barrie. Christopher Baker, director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, explained his thoughts.

“This is a powerful portrait of one of Scotland’s greatest contemporary writers by a highly skilled local artist.”

And when his portrait was unveiled, Rankin said: “I’ve only been painted a few times in my life, usually as a caricature to accompany a newspaper review of one of my books, so it was slightly unnerving to see how well Guy Kinder had captured me.

“Of course, he found me in my natural habitat - The Oxford Bar - so I’m more at ease than in some situations. I like the painting a lot, but I do wonder what I was thinking at the time. Maybe my drink is just out of view.”

Is this the new festival venue I heard about?

It sure is. St Andrew Square Garden is the newest, and hopefully the funkiest place to be for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. From comedy shows to cabaret and live music it’s going to be all go in the square.

Sounds great, but what about Spiegelterrace on George Street?

Well, it’s still there in part but the Famous Spiegeltent has moved to the Garden. Assembly Rooms will still run a full programme of shows though - this year includes major theatre hit The Trial of Jane Fonda and comedians Danny Bhoy, Andrew Maxwell and Fred MacAulay. The Assembly Rooms’ Terrace in front of the building, will hold a box office, bar and facilities. It’ll just be smaller in size than the Spiegelterrace.

Ok, it’s still in early stages but our inside source tells us

there’ll be superb bars (it’s the new location for the Aperol Spritz Garden), relaxing terraces and top notch fresh food.

It’ll have a real garden party feel and be a great place to enjoy the Festival vibe. On the comedy front The Stand in the Square is where it’s at. The 150 seat venue based in a yurt will have comedy performances operated by The Stand Comedy Club on York Place. There’ll also be a world music stage by the monument with free entertainment all day long.

So when will it open?

The St Andrew Square Garden will be open from the start of August until the 25th of the month, from 10am to midnight every night, although shows will go on later. It’ll be a family friendly space with kids’ shows during the day and the hippest hangout at night.

We are too, the official programme launches on 15 May so we’ll all need to bide our time until then.

L

ast year’s third album The Sting didn’t do well at the box office, especially not by the standards of her gold certified 2008 top ten debut Lessons to Be Learned, but Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi is an artist who deserves some support nonetheless. The Sting was a record which could have been compared with the best of its competition (it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Jessie J performing some of the more tough edged and strong willed tracks like Highway and Left With Someone Else, for example), yet which undoubtedly faltered with a lack of major label support.

More than that, it emerged amid suggestions from Cilmi that her former label had advised her to play upon her sexuality more than she would have wished, with this album’s demure but confident black and white sleeve now featuring her clothed and pointedly shrouded beneath a

black veil. Of course, the devil’s advocate might suggest that Cilmi could have been suffering an attack of sour grapes following the end of her former deal, but the condition and demands of the music industry for young women entering the business at the pop end of the scale tells us what she reports isn’t too far fetched.

To put it in perspective, Cilmi’s experience and profile tell us she’s a veteran of the scene who’s been around for a while, yet she’s still only 22. She was spotted by a music executive performing in the streets of her home city when she was 12 and a bidding war saw her signed up in her early teens. She moved to London with her parents and brother shortly afterwards, even as her debut album Lessons to Be Learned was being written – recorded by Girls Aloud producers Xenomania, her big international hit Sweet About

Carberry Tower: A Venue fit for Royalty

CILMI’S EXPERIENCE AND PROFILE TELL US SHE’S A VETERAN OF THE SCENE WHO’S BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE, YET SHE’S STILL ONLY 22 Me was released in 2008, when she was 16-years-old.

It went to number one in her home country and was named

by PRS for Music as the UK’s most played song of 2009, with the album also doing well.

Yet it would be her only major hit single, unless you count the reasonable top 10 showing of On a Mission, the first track from the 2010 follow up Ten. Which means at this point in time it’s tempting to think of Cilmi as a one hit wonder, criminal though that seems given her age and obvious determination to get back on track. Produced by Eliot James (Kaiser Chiefs, Noah and the Whale, Two Door Cinema Club), The Sting is an album which expresses regret and separation anxiety well, even if there are no clear cut pop thrills to be found therein. What it does do in style, however, is to showcase once more Cilmi’s distinctive, husky vocal, a stunning instrument which sounds like it should belong to a much older woman – although not necessarily a more experienced one.

The Backyard Bar in Tonsai, Krabi, Thailand where I worked in 2012 I got to DJ in the middle of the jungle every night.

“I

was 24 and on holiday in France when I found out I was pregnant with our first child. We were over the moon.

It was a great pregnancy and I kept working up until the birth. The same can be said for our second child Pierre, although I definitely felt less tired 18 years ago. Both births went really well too, especially for Milan. It was maybe an hour long with no pain at all… It took three hours for Pierre. And regarding my daughter Genat, we adopted her when she was seven months old from Ethiopia - a different adventure that brought so much happiness.

“Work is essential for me, I love what I do, but, the biggest challenge was combining it with being a mother. Milan was only six months old when I bought my first restaurant, I was still breastfeeding. How did I do it? I don’t know.

After three children, I now feel that nothing is a problem and I am definitely less stressed. Over the years and with experience, I do believe happy parents make happy children.

I also think being organised is essential to a happy family.

I have an exceptional husband who is very involved. We take turns on who works at night and who stays at home with the kids. But regardless of who’s working I never go to bed without checking homework or preparing Pierre’s school uniform and pack lunch. Being a mum means that my kids rely on me, I have to be at the top and I have to guide them as well as possible. I can be very strict for important things.”

As a family we often go walking in the Bor ders and take a picnic, eve n if it’s raining. We lov e to cook together too.

My husband also has two older children, age d 33 and 29, so we’re a big family but what a joy it is to have all our children at the same table.

n the world of interiors, it’s very cool to be Celtic right now.

The writing was on the wall, or more precisely catwalk, when Karl Lagerfeld paid homage to all things tartan in his Chanel Métiers d’Art show last year. And where fashion goes, décor inevitably follows.

But it’s not just twists on tartans and new wave plaids that are going strong. As the hunger for heritage stories and craftmanship grows, everything from traditionally made furniture to luxe lace are making a splash, at home and abroad. And whilst honesty and integrity continue to make up the DNA of Scottish design, a new generation of designer-makers are keeping things fresh. “The hallmarks of Scottish design lie in the materials and the way they are used,” says Rosie Brown of Papa Stour (www.papastour. com). “Cashmere, tweed, leather, horn and even stones are given a modern twist by our craftsmen. Locality and tradition are now being revived by designers in a contemporary way.”

With sites such as Made From Scotland (www. madefromscotland.com) making it so much easier to access all that we have to offer, it’s even easier to shop ‘Scottish’ and discover more about our new up and coming designers.

“We have an amazing heritage and iconography in this country which can be used in both a traditional and contemporary way – whether it is easily recognisable as being Scottish or not,” says Made From Scotland’s Fay Gourlay. “We can do luxe, humorous and quirky, modern or the traditional and all are doing really well both in this country and abroad at the moment.”

With a total turnover last year of £950 million, when it comes to the nation’s textiles industry – a sector in which Scotland is seen as the pinnacle of quality – business is certainly booming.

“Textiles from Scotland are sought worldwide and are bought in over 150 countries – and Scottish textiles feature everywhere from The Whitehouse to Sydney Opera House,” explains Cathy Black, head of textiles at Scottish Enterprise.

With 2014 the Year of Homecoming, the profile of homegrown talent is set for another boost with a number of other events shining the spotlight on Scottish talent.

“With the Commonwealth Games, The Ryder Cup and the Referendum happening in 2014, Scotland and its talents are never going to be far from the news,” says Rosie.

So, with all eyes focussed on us this year, we take a look at who is selling Scotland in style here and abroad.

he era of digital decorating is upon us. Today, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram – and a bevvy of design blogs - allow us to scour the globe without having to leave our sofas. They grant us access to the world’s best designers and the most beautiful rooms. It has also transformed the way we shop, making everything from the high end to the secondhand more accessible and instantly available.

Take the humble mood board. The starting point for any decorating project now seems antiquated in the face of the emergent force that is Pinterest. With 20 million new visitors every month, this visual viewing platform offers up thousands of images to feast on. All you have to do is browse, be inspired and pinch the ones you want for your own virtual pinboard.

“Pinterest has had a huge influence on the internet savvy decorator - it makes it so easy to discover and follow trends,” says interiors blogger Alison Gibb whose blog, Her Indoors, (www.her-indoors.com), attracts 30,000 hits a month. “I’ve created a board for everything from ‘Dining Inspiration’ to

‘The Bedroom’. When you allow yourself to pin freely, it is amazing how quickly a ‘look’ emerges and a theme comes together.”

Houzz is another board based site that focusses on home design. The online design community serves up more than two million images and over 1.5 million products – handpicked by experts – alongside chatboards and tutorials for advice. In short, it’s heaven for the homeowner in the midst of a renovation project, but more than that, it’s been touted as a prime example of how the design knowledge previously locked away inside the brains of the professionals can be digitalised and digested by all.

Whilst bigger companies like IKEA have their own social sites with free apps allowing you to test out alternative looks on your home, over on Facebook and Twitter, hundreds of professional designers are offering free advice to their followers. The best part? These sites are interactive so you can ask the designers any question you want – and be first in line for competitions or discounts.

The rise in digital voyeurism has, unsurprisingly, produced a whole raft of interior exhibitionists and while some should have kept their curtains closed, there are some excellent real home inspiration blogs out there. One of the best being very close to home - Ollie & Seb’s Haus (www.ollieandsebshaus.co.uk), created by Glasgow mum of two Deborah Gordon. One Edinburgh designer capitalising on the rise of social media is Jeff Laing who launches an e-boutique later this year for his interior design company Jeffreys Interiors (www.jeffreys-interiors.co.uk). “Shoppers are becoming much more educated in interiors and social media is helping them to refine their tastes”, he says.

Undoubtedly one of the best things about our social media addiction is the democratisation of design. By using these channels for self promotion, we’re also being exposed to more designer makers than ever before.

“Inspiration is the decorator’s spur,” says Alison from Her Indoors. “It is what motivates us and social media is full of it which can only be a good thing for us and our living rooms.”

eng Shui, literally translated as wind and water, works on the Yin (passive) and Yang (active) components of energy to create the perfect balance of ‘chi’ (energy) to achieve comfort, harmony and balance on our lives by the ‘art of placement’.

Practised through many generations, the actual principle of Feng Shui takes years of study and is extremely complex, but there are lots of proven case studies of its success, and many people in the Far East would never dream of purchasing a home without first consulting the advice of a Feng Shui master.

“I personally design interiors with the basic principles of Feng Shui in my mind,” says Colin. “Designing a space that is capable of enhancing your state of mind and mood as soon

as you enter is central to the principles and this is the most powerful form of design. Well considered designs are always mood altering and interiors using the principles of Feng Shui are usually calm and peaceful, which is what the modern day family needs to balance today’s hectic lifestyles.”

Allowing positive energy to flow is an essential principle of the art so one of the easiest ways to install a bit of Feng Shui into your home is by de-cluttering, paying particular attention to under the bed and in the entrance hall area.

When designing any new space, consider how you want to feel in the space and don’t simply choose designs that follow a current trend. A well considered scheme will result in a timeless space full of harmonious energy.

Three ways to create good Feng Shui in your home:

The bedroom should be a place of sanctuary with as little furniture or clutter as possible. Positioning your bed is also a very important consideration. Avoid positioning it under any structural beams that ‘cut’ through your body, or within view of mirrors. Also try and position your bed so that it is far from the door and don’t place water features in your bedroom.

The bathroom is often regarded as an essential area that allows the escape of positive energy, so when redesigning a bathroom it is critical to avoid positioning of the WC in direct line of the front door. By avoiding sharp corners or angles that create ‘piercing daggers ‘and by introducing more sensual curves this will allow energy to flow with more ease.

With the kitchen being the heart of the home, this room has a key role to play in family life with positive energy and nourishment. The functional working triangle works well with Feng Shui principals but the hob and sink should never be placed right beside each other due to the conflicting elements of fire and water. A well positioned kitchen island promotes good chi and prevents you from having your back to the incoming energy flow. Keeping the kitchen clean and uncluttered with appliances and gadgetry out of view will also enhance the overall feel good energy of this pivotal room.

T

he crown of St Giles’ Cathedral is a key part of Edinburgh’s skyline and the oldest, proudly marking the centre of the old burgh for almost 900 years. There has been a church on its location since at least 1124, but the building we see today has changed greatly over the years. The tower and core parts of the building are medieval, but much of the exterior was heavily restored in the 1800s.

In 1817 a collection of buildings which had grown up around St Giles’ were demolished, revealing a rather alarming lean in the walls of the cathedral. The interior had also suffered over the years, with walls being built to divide the space into four churches, a meeting house for the General Assembly, a police station and a fire engine house.

Extensive restoration began in 1829 and started with the exterior, leaving all but the tower coated in new stonework.

In the 1870s and ‘80s work concentrated on the interior, removing all the internal walls to re-create one open space, and restoring the sort of carved furnishings ripped out during the Reformation.

Inside the cathedral there are a wealth of memorials.

Two of the most elaborate are to the arch enemy’s the Marquess of Montrose and the Marquess of Argyll, who fought on opposing sides during the Civil War. In 1650 Montrose was executed on Argyll’s orders, and his head was displayed on the Tolbooth next to St Giles’ for many years.

However in 1660 the monarchy was restored and the tables turned. Argyll was executed and his head replaced his old enemy’s on the Tolbooth. Today the remains of both men lie just a few feet away from each other in St Giles’, perhaps in some gesture of reconciliation.

Perhaps the most peculiar feature associated with St Giles’ is in the car park at the back of the cathedral.

Once upon a time this was a graveyard, and the last person to be buried in it was the firebrand preacher John Knox, who was at one time minister of St Giles’. We will probably never know exactly where he is buried, but to mark his presence a yellow square is painted on one of the parking bays, offering some form of commemoration for the great reformer.

ith summer fast approaching and the annual beach unveil looming, my thoughts have turned to my less than bikini ready body. A winter of comforting carbs and heavy pregnancy left me with lumps in all the wrong places.

To kickstart a new me, I decided to treat my unloved body to a pampering anti-cellulite treatment at Moi Beauty, a popular salon in Morningside that offers a myriad of indulgent treatments, skincare brands and up-to-the-minute beauty fixes. Arguably, nobody does these treatments and skincare products better than the French do, which made the salon’s Guinot Aromatic Body Minceur treatment the perfect choice.

Using essential oils, plant extracts and manual sculpting massage, this is an indulgent and holistic treatment that targets problem areas, fast. After revealing my body concerns to my therapist Nicola, she applied an innovative exfoliator, Guinot Gel D’exfoliessence, to localised areas. The gel, which contains extracts of papaya and lemon, was applied onto

dry skin and left to remove dead cells. No messy scrubs, no need for post application showers. Next, she got to work with a Guinot specific body sculpturing massage that helps eliminate fatty deposits, stimulate circulation and improve body contours. I had expected to be uncomfortably kneaded and prodded, but this massage was ultra relaxing and the essential oils smelled delicious.

A detoxifying thermal peel off sauna mask containing clay and green tea was then applied to further firm the skin before I was wrapped up warm. Whilst the mask set, Nicola massaged my neck and shoulders as I drifted off to sleep.

When the mask was removed, my skin immediately felt softer, less dimply and, even firmer. Whilst I’m under no illusions that one treatment will leave me with lithe limbs and a toned tum, the Guinot Aromatic Body Minceur treatment did leave everything tighter and smoother – even if it is only temporary. A great choice before a wedding, before day one on the beach or for a little summer pick me up, this is one anti-cellulite treatment which is worth the money. And I think I may invest in the course of treatments.

O

n a hot summer’s day last year, I took a trip to Wonderland. Perhaps not quite the same wonderland Alice visited as no rabbit hole was required, but one equally as curious. This Wonderland was set in the heart of the historic English city of Chester in a recently refurbished hotel appropriately named Oddfellows.

Housed in a Georgian Grade II listed building, behind the elegant façade the design led hotel stays true to its name with a quirky interior and kitsch accessories, clear from the moment we checked in over the huge Valkyrie aircraft wing reception desk while vintage typewriters hung vertically around us on the wall. The receptionist even acknowledged our bemusement by commenting that you spot something new every time you visit Oddfellows.

Frequented by Chester locals as well as guests, the hotel has 18 boutique bedrooms and suites, a Lounge Bar

and whimsical Secret Garden to drink or dine in, as well as restaurant The Garden with a Mediterranean inspired changing seasonal menu created by Michelin-star chef Simon Radley.

Our bedroom was one of the Caldecott Classics.

Influenced by illustrator Randolf Caldecott, each room is filled with his humorous drawings and sketches, a plush king sized bed and Nespresso coffee machine – and a roll top bath in some. Everything you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

While there’s no spa on site, a picturesque five minute walk takes you to the five star Chester Grosvenor hotel where Oddfellows guests are welcome to take full advantage of the spa facilities. I booked in for the What’s Not To Love REN Bespoke Body Massage, £70, which lived up to its name.

Indian massage along with Egyptian reflexology, I left feeling completely relaxed and energised and ready to explore.

Chester truly holds to its old English roots. The town centre is filled with black and white half timbered buildings that have existed since medieval times. There’s also plenty to do, from visiting the largest Roman amphitheatre found in Britain, to putting on a bet or two at Chester Racecourse or checking out the sales at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet where you’ll find brands such as Mulberry, Michael Kors and Karen Millen.

That night, we ate dinner in the Secret Garden. The space has a real funky vibe with open air and covered seating areas, freestanding fire places, giant murals of woodland creatures and an array of stunning plants and flowers. Should the typical British weather rear its gloomy head, canopies can be drawn across to cover the area too.

The garden was abuzz with the Friday night crowd as we took a seat in a private booth. We got in on the action and ordered a bottle of San Vitto Merlot, £17.50, while we perused the menu (there’s also a delectable cocktail list to choose from). Our feast began with the deliciously rich

chicken liver parfait with marsala jelly, £7, and flavoursome scallops with mango, ricotta ravioli and garden mint, £12.

We followed with the succulent chicken with sweet potato and coriander yoghurt topped with spiced peanuts, £16, and fresh new season lamb with burnt onions, Israeli couscous and tzatziki, £18.

Ending with a selection of cheese, £7.50, and the Catalan orange parfait with sugar tuile, £5, it’s clear that attention to detail takes precedence at Oddfellows, whether for the beautifully presented (and tasting) food or beautiful surroundings.

Chester’s little piece of Wonderland offers a totally different take on your typical English city break. It’s no wonder luxury travel site Mr & Mrs Smith recently snapped up the hotel for their prestigious books. Oddfellows is a charming place to while away a few days and you’d be mad as a hatter not to love it.

T

he elegant Georgian house of the Raeburn Hotel fell into disrepair following its closure in 2007, but in 2014 it looks set to thrive again. A major refurbishment has transformed The Raeburn into a stylish boutique hotel, bar and restaurant; now a modern and contemporary space which embraces its Scottish heritage. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon when the bar was bustling with drinkers and the restaurant was starting to fill up with diners keen to check out the Sunday lunch menu.

Artisan oak flooring, bespoke oak tables and plush armchair seating offer a sophisticated spot for dining in the restaurant. Serving up locally sourced produce, the menu is a mix of modern and traditional dishes with a carefully crafted wine list to boot.

To start, we chose the sweet chorizo and apple salad with capers and cider dressing, £6, and ceviche of shellfish with avocado, tomato, lime and Sardinian crisp bread, £8.

Beautifully presented, the dishes offered a refreshing fusion of flavours and set the bar high.

There was no question of what was on my Sunday lunch wish list - the slow roasted sirloin of beef with traditional accompaniments and gravy, £15. Topped with a giant Yorkshire pudding, the beef was succulent and roast potatoes perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. My dinner date opted for the lighter and brunch-like mushroom and leek ragout with soft polenta and poached egg, £12, and assured me it was equally as delicious.

The lemon posset with roasted rhubarb and citrus biscuit, £5, and a selection of cheeses, oatcakes and chutney, £8, followed; a sweet and savoury end to a satisfying Sunday feast.

Perfectly encapsulating Stockbridge’s vibrant feel, The Raeburn is a welcome (and long awaited) addition to the city’s dining scene. We can’t wait to try the outdoor terrace come summer.

CLASSIC Chateau La Vielle Croix, France, 2009, £12.66 This is an extremely well priced wine from the Bordeaux satellite of Fronsac. Notes of bramble and forest floor give a delicious wine with a distinctive herbal quality.
