The festival has been and gone so sit back, put your feet up and get stuck into this bumper edition of i-on. This month there’s an extended weddings section to inspire those looking to make their Big Day even more special - we’ve covered everything from real life weddings (p48) to a list of quirky venues to tie the knot (p67). We welcome the sunshine with a visit to Dubai on page 72 and take on prints in our fashion shoot on page 30. On the food front we raise the culinary bar with a dining experience in the kitchen at One Square (p98). We also find out if a Bruntsfield institution still makes the cut on page 100. Last month, as proud media sponsors of the St Andrew Square Garden, i-on hosted its first pre-festival party at The Stand in The Square and on page 06 you can get a glimpse of some of our guests, who, in a nod to i-on’s 9th birthday this month tell us about their favourite gifts. Congratulations to last month’s winner Angela Hughes who won a luxury skin rejuvenation package courtesy of Beyond MediSpa Edinburgh in Harvey Nichols. This month we’re giving one reader the chance to win £500 for a new season shopping spree at Reiss on Multrees Walk. For details on how to enter turn to page 08. Until then, enjoy i-on.

STATE OF THE ART
Golfing at North Berwick by Sir John Lavery words ∙ Joshua King
G
olf. We invented it and many see it as our national pastime. So as the world’s finest players prepare for the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles this month, the National Galleries have teed up their own golfing extravaganza with a collection of special images - including Lavery’s beautiful depiction of the East Lothian course - which have captured golf’s magic. Lavery was an Irish painter who became part of a group of artists who breathed new life into Scottish painting known as The Glasgow Boys. Curators are hopeful his work and a selection of golfing railway posters from the 1920s and ‘30s and more modern photographs can attract a new breed of visitor to the galleries. Michael Clarke, director of the Scottish National Gallery, explains Lavery’s affinity with North Berwick: “He was very
friendly with Sir Patrick Ford, a prominent Edinburgh solicitor and politician, who built a fine house called Westerdunes in North Berwick. “He was particularly keen on golf and Lavery and, his family used to stay with the Fords at Westerdunes and in the years immediately following the Great War, Lavery made a number of very fine paintings of the golf course at North Berwick and its environs. In the 18th and 19th centuries there are painted portraits of golfers and Charles Lees’ great 1847 painting of The Golfers which belongs to the National Galleries and will be in the show.” The Art of Golf exhibition runs until 26 October 2014 at the Scottish National Gallery. For more information visit www.nationalgalleries.org.

Honeyblood S
cottish indie-rock has plenty of reason to be grateful to Brightonian indie label FatCat, an imprint which has launched many of the better bands in the country to national prominence. The likes of epic Kilsyth rockers The Twilight Sad, Glasgow power punks Paws and the same city’s indie contingent We Were Promised Jetpacks have all passed through the FatCat ranks, while the label most famously set the careers of the now internationally famed Frightened Rabbit on their way. In which case, Honeyblood is a first for the label, breaking away from the boys-in-bands dynamic of past Caledonian signees to offer an all female alternative version of the indie rock sound so beloved of all of the above. Not that it’s a
words ∙ David Pollock
contest or anything, but the duo of singer/guitarist Stina Tweeddale and drummer Shona McVicar is actually among the very best of those bands mentioned, with a sound which is infectiously pop and scuzzily experienced beyond their years all at once. FatCat’s founder Alex Knight reportedly saw that in them the first time he saw their live show, buying all their merchandise on the spot and resolving to sign them right away. Formed and based in Glasgow, the duo first came to the attention of the city of their birth with a two track cassette entitled Thrift Shop, which was recorded in their bathroom and launched at hipster hangout the Old Hairdressers. Their first gig, however, was at Sneaky Pete’s in Tweeddale’s
MUSIC | 19 native Edinburgh, where she previously played in the locally admired Boycotts and was encouraged to play music by her father Sandy, guitarist in local outfit Blues ‘n’ Trouble. Given her first guitar at the age of 12 and ambitious to form a band since pretty much that moment, Honeyblood is the perfect combination of Tweeddale’s youthful fascination with Riot Grrrls and their contemporaries, including L7, Hole, the Breeders and PJ Harvey. It’s the latter pair whose influence is strongest on Honeyblood though, with their sound a fuzzy, shoegaze-like wash of guitars set off by Tweeddale’s sweet, bubblegum popping voice. They recorded their self titled debut album in rural Connecticut with The National producer Peter Katis, and its aftermath has seen them featured in Elle and played on BBC Radio 6 Music. There’s no question that the pair are already one of Scotland’s musical exports of the year, a satisfying sonic experience whose smart, snotty way with a lyric (Super Rat’s “I will hate you forever… you really do disgust me” is hard to match) will see them celebrated far and wide.
Honeyblood plays the Tolbooth, Stirling, on 11 September. They also play PJ Molloy’s, Dunfermline, 12 September, and CCA, Glasgow, 13 September.

WITH LOVE... MY I-ON EDINBURGH
Nick Finnigan
From running Historic Scotland’s Events and Filming unit to becoming executive manager of Edinburgh Castle in early 2011, Nick has seen it all throughout his 20 years at the company. Here he shares his view on the city with us. What gives Edinburgh its edge? It’s classy and compact – a true world city.
Authentic, traditional, Japanese family recipes, using fresh, local ingredients. Lunch and dinner served 7 days a week at 10 Gillespie Place, Edinburgh. Outside catering for any occasion always available. Call us on 0131 281 0526 for reservations or enquiries, or check out our menu online at www.harajukukitchen.co.uk
Is there anything that would place Edinburgh more firmly on the map? A top quality indoor arena which could attract larger international artists and major events. Your preferred areas in Edinburgh? The city centre, particularly during the Edinburgh Festival and at Christmas and New Year because the atmosphere is fantastic and the setting incredible. Where would you take visitors to show them the ‘real ‘Edinburgh? Clark’s Bar on Dundas Street, a very traditional bar in the vibrant New Town. Describe a good night out in Edinburgh. Dinner at The Honours, cocktails at The Dome and comedy at The Stand.
Around the city - where you’ll find me: Dining out: Bell’s Diner, St Stephen Street. Doing business: The Tearooms at Edinburgh Castle. Living it up: Le Di-Vin wine bar.

BEAUTY Eve McBride photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Eve McBride, owner of All About Eve salon and boutique, shares her beauty tips and secrets with i-on. What comes first… hair, make-up or skin? I’d say make-up (although if you’ve got great skin, make-up isn’t as important). I love translucent powder to keep make-up in place all day. Make-up transforms a look from day to night too. When I’m going out I always vamp up my eyes. My signature scent is… Chanel Mademoiselle. I have always worn it but now we have Miller Harris in the boutique, I’m loving Peteit Grain. My beauty icon is… Elizabeth Taylor; she exudes glamour, beauty and fashion. My top beauty tip is… to keep misbehaving brows in shape. What’s in your make-up bag? M∙A∙C Bronzer leaves a gorgeous finish on my skin; Lola lip gloss in Mistress plumps and lasts all day; Ellis Faas foundation gives great coverage and an amazing base; M∙A∙C gel eye liner for dark sexy eyes and an HD Brows palette for perfect brows.

MUSIC
Jon Spaczynski photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Also known as DJ Huggy, Jon is the producer and events manager of The Liquid Room nightclub. He’s a key player in the Edinburgh music scene and has DJ’d at world renowned clubs from Pacha in Ibiza to WMC in Miami with his minimal, deep house techno sound. How has music influenced your life? Without music I wouldn’t be in the job I’m in and I wouldn’t have travelled as extensively as I have or met so many amazing, talented people. What was the first record you bought? Pet Shop Boys Disco on cassette. What’s your classic album? Today it’s Massive Attack Blue Lines. Tomorrow it could be De La Soul 3 Feet High and Rising or Stevie Wonder Talking Book. Best gig you’ve been to? Daft Punk at T in The Park 1997. It was one of the first times I’d heard a dance act go all out and not just guys on keyboards with a screaming diva.

BEING MUM | 29
“I
was really lucky with both pregnancies. My symptoms were mainly nausea in the afternoon, going to the loo a bit more and an unbelievable passion for mango. Giving birth to Izzie was more traumatic as she had meconium in the womb. Jamie was a breeze, I left work the week before I was due, moved house on my due date and gave birth five days later. I arrived at the hospital and he came an hour later. I was home that evening. “The hardest thing about being a parent is the constant self-judgment – are you doing the right thing and a good job. As a working mum, time away from the babes can be hard and guilt ridden too. I took five months maternity leave and enjoyed every moment but as the main breadwinner my choices were more limited so I returned to the same job, full time, and my husband, who loves spending time with the kids, took five months paternity leave – the new Shared Parental Leave worked well for us. “Life as a working mum is tiring and difficult but at the same time I think my kids get the best of me when I am there. The best advice I can give new mums is the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your baby will be. What Popdon’t Up know Fox:Layout 14/08/2014 08:37 Page 1 you you will1learn.”
I rate the Baby Massag e classes at Tiso in Lei th and the Baby Feeding app, it’s good if you’re breastfeeding. When it comes to toy s my babies loved the VTech First Steps Bab y Walker, Early Learnin g Centre Musical Drum and Sophie Le Giraffe . The website you’ll find me on is www. offeroftheday.co.uk. It’s great for bargains. The recipe that works with my children is chicken and butternut squash soup. Bake a whole butternut squash in the same oven which you are cooking the fam ily roast. Make stock from the chicken bon es, add carrots, onions or any other root veg tha t needs using up. Scoop out the squash seeds and add the flesh to the chicken stock and boi l until other veg are soft . Whizw up if you like it ultra smooth.

OUR WEDDING, OUR WAY | 49
Colin and Sarah Church Married on 19 April 2014 Venue: Kinkell Byre, St Andrews “We met in Hamilton’s Bar in Stockbridge in August 2009 and three years later I swept Sarah off her feet by flying her to Italy and proposing at the top of Monte Bianco. “The wedding was two years in the planning and we chose Kinkell Byre in St Andrews as the venue. Our friends got married there and we just loved it. We looked at other venues but nothing compared to it. We never had a specific theme for the day but injected our own style through personal touches like vintage luggage pieces for our card box and table plan, personalised wine labels and a twitter page to allow everyone to upload photos over the wedding day and the weeks after #churraysselfie. We also created our own road sign for the end of the farm road. By far the most important personal touch was that the profits from the bar went to Breakthrough Breast Cancer in memory of my mum, Myra. “We had 132 day guests and an additional 25 that joined us for the evening celebrations. The menu consisted of

antipasti sharing boards (a nod to where we got engaged) and a choice of locally sourced fillet steak, roasted root vegetables with garlic and parsley mash or Beet bourguignon for vegetarians. Dessert was a lemon and raspberry roulade and coffee with homemade chocolates. “The band was great and really set the mood. They were a six piece cover band called Soul Inferno – Marissa, the lead singer, sings in Scarlet every Sunday in Hamilton’s, one of the bars I own with Martin Luney. Our first dance was When Loves Takes Over by Kelly Rowland sung by Sarah’s bridesmaid Katie. Early on in our dating we went to see Katie sing and she dedicated this song to us so it seemed apt. Sarah walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of All I Ask Of You from The Phantom Of The Opera, we went to see the stage show together and loved the music. “If we could do anything differently we’d probably go on honeymoon straight away. We’ve both been so busy with work we’ve still not managed to book anywhere but we’re hoping to go away at some point early next year. I’m saying skiing and Sarah’s looking to beach it… we’ll see.

Our favourite things Apart from the obvious part of actually getting married, we made sure we spent time together to take a step back and enjoy everything around us. At one point we stood at the side of the dancefloor and watched the ceilidh dancing turn into what can best be described as dodgems. Sarah and I laughed so much, it was hilarious.“

Tammy and Robert (Bob) Neillings Married on 15 November 2013 Venue: The Caves ”Bob and I went to the same school but we didn’t really know one another as he was a few years above me. Over time we ended up with mutual friends and this led to us spending more time together. Things grew from there. “Bob proposed on Christmas morning in 2012. It was really early and he woke me up to say he had a surprise; he then made me close my eyes and played one of my favourite songs, Nick Cave Into my Arms. As soon as I heard the song I had a feeling what was about to happen. When he asked me to open my eyes he was in front of me on one knee with both hands open - one hand had a beautiful diamond ring in it and the other was tattooed with the words ‘marry me’, a permanent reminder of that moment. ”We got married the following year and did all the planning in 11 months. I thought this was plenty time and it avoided us having too much time to fuss over decisions. ”I never expected to have a big wedding; I always said I’d have an intimate affair and go abroad. That didn’t happen. We ended up having 100 day guests and

54 | I-ON WEDDING SPECIAL another 100 evening guests at The Caves in the Old Town. I loved the venue’s old Edinburgh atmosphere and the fact it needed minimal styling. Due to the time of year we chose a dark colour scheme - the groom and his party wore charcoal grey and maroon, whilst the bridal party wore black and white. For me it was important that things didn’t look forced or contrived, I just wanted the day to have a good autumn/ winter feel. ”I didn’t really look to wedding magazines for inspiration; I felt that as a couple we had our own style and was keen for that to be reflected in our wedding. I did, however, really like the site Rock My Wedding. The relaxed nature of the blog was really appealing and it was a good source of different ideas. “I found wedding dress shopping overwhelming and I struggled to enjoy it. But as soon as we went into Lamesley Bridal on Broughton Street I knew it was the place I would find my dress. They do lots of vintage inspired styles and Carly in the shop was amazing, she made me feel so relaxed and understood my 'quirks'. Music was individual too and thanks to our great friend Giuseppe Leo, who DJ’d after the amazing Clash tribute band, The Counterfeit Clash, we were able to have our own playlists which was great and definitely helped get everyone dancing. For a quirky touch we also personalised playing cards and had temporary tattoos with our names and wedding date on them.
Our favourite things We loved every second but our close friend Neil doing a really special reading that he wrote himself at the ceremony definitely stands out. Walking into the dining room as Mr and Mrs Neillings with everyone cheering was pretty special too. At the end of the night John, our photographer, took us outside for one last photo (pictured on previous page) and I can’t help but smile when I see it now, it’s my favourite shot from the night. It was after a lot of drinking and dancing and Bob had his shirt off and his tie around his head.”

OUR WEDDING, OUR WAY | 57
Andrew Turnbull and Tracy-Anne Turnbull Married on 11 April 2014 Venue: Balbirnie house, Fife “Andrew and I were in the same year at school but it wasn't until a few years after we left school that we got together on a night out in Berties, now Dropkick Murphys on Merchant Street. After 11 years together he finally popped the question with a pretty special proposal. “We had taken our dog Rylo for a walk to Threipmuir Reservoir in the Pentlands and Andrew decided to find out if there were any geocaches in the vicinity which wasn’t anything unusual – I suppose in some ways Andrew can be a bit of a geek and geocaching, a kind of treasure hunt, is his guilty pleasure. Low and behold there was a geocache nearby but I thought nothing of it. In fact, I was starting to get slightly irritated as the search was taking us further away from the car. As we got to the place where the 'geocache' was supposedly hidden Andrew told me to start searching. I didn't know what we were looking for but with a little prompting and guidance towards a pile of rocks, I began to dig and came across a tub of jelly rings. Confused, I turned around to show him and he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand – unbeknown to me he’d been up there the day before to plant the sweets. “We got married nine months after the proposal and choosing the venue was probably the biggest decision we had to make. We chose Balbirnie House Hotel because we loved its imposing driveway, picturesque surroundings and friendly, helpful staff.

58 | I-ON WEDDING SPECIAL “For inspiration on flowers, hair, dresses and cake, I looked to Pinterest. I also went to wedding fairs which were great. Physically seeing products and set ups can make all the difference. A lot of companies also offer discounts if you book there too. “It was at a wedding fair at the Sheraton Hotel that I came across Susan Gregory bridal wear. I had already tried a lot of wedding dresses but had found the experience quite stressful. I couldn't find one that instantly felt right and began to panic, especially as I’d heard it could take up to eight months to order a dress and it was six months until our wedding. I’m so happy I popped into the shop as it’s where I found ‘the one’. I made a few tweaks to it by adding buttons down the back and changed the front to a sweetheart neck and it was perfect. What’s more, alterations were priced at a very reasonable £40. “The lead up to the wedding can feel pretty stressful and you’ll no doubt feel overwhelmed at times but it is all worth
it in the end. Just allow yourself to have fun on the day and not get caught up in the small details.
Our favourite things “Andrew would say the food but I guess having all our friends and family in the one place is pretty special. We had a pianist called Euan from the The Wedding Music Company who played for us throughout the ceremony and drinks reception. For the bridal party entrance he played A Thousand Years by Christina Perri and it was perfect. The Jenni Gibb Band were our band for the evening reception, they were absolutely fantastic. “

Dubai
For honeymoons, winter sun and everything in between words ∙ Henry le May
Sunset at Anantara Dubia The Palm Resort and Spa
I
n the depths of a Scottish winter, summer can seem like a cruel joke. And when, sometime in June, the sun breaks through the cloud shroud that has engulfed this fair land for the last 10 months, optimism abounds. “Taps aff,” we cry, and the pale blue bodies emerge squinting into the balmy 17 degree heat. The reality is Winter sun isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential, and with two direct flights from Glasgow a day, year round warmth and blue skies, the City state of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is a great option for a short break to relax and replenish those vitamin D stores. At around eight hours Dubai is no short haul destination, but if you are heading for a mini break of 4+ days, the travel time can constitute an overnight
portion of your trip, giving you maximum opportunity to lounge on the beach or shop in a number of mega malls. Dubai is no stranger to superlatives with maxims ringing out amongst the hotels and resorts - 7 stars, ski slope, manmade archipelago in the shape of the world - it can be tricky to know where to stay. For me, Thailand has always been a favourite destination and, as a fan of the Bangkok based Anantara Hotel group, legendary Thai hospitality coupled with a private beach, the UAE’s only over water beach villas and the largest spa in the city made the newly opened Anantara The Palm Resort an easy choice. Nestled on the farthest frond of the Jumeirah Palm Island, the Anantara resort blends Thai temple architecture with

Staying in the lower level of a four unit villa, we were delighted to find we could slip directly into the 10,000 square meter lagoon pool and take a leisurely swim right up to the 400 meter private beach with the calm waters of the Arabian Sea lapping against the shore. The beach played a big part during our time at the resort. It was here that we set forth for our wake boarding adventure, one of the numerous water based activities offered by Yellow Boats. As a natural water baby I only spent the first 20 minutes floundering facedown in the water. After getting to grips with the initial jerk and temptation to bend one’s arms, it was quite a sensation to skim the water, towed behind a speedboat with the skyline of Dubai as a backdrop. After an in-room Thai oil massage to soothe my wakeboard muscles and a snack on an amazing selection of dates, we were ready to head back to the beach. Sitting in the Arabian dusk at Lotus Lounge overlooking the infinity pool, towards the palaces of the super wealthy on the opposite shoreline and sipping a Singha, relaxing in style doesn’t get much better. We wandered down a verdant path to the water’s edge where a lone candlelit table had been setup. As the sun set, a team of chefs and butlers arranged a seamless

Dubai has a wealth of activities for the restless, from the bottom of the ocean at the Dubai Mall with an indoor aquarium and underwater Zoo to vertigo inducing trips to the top of the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa. Boredom is not an option. With some of the biggest names in food vying for your Dirham, foodies are spoilt for choice, least of all back at the resort where Mekong restaurant offers authentic modern Thai cuisine, rickshaw-style seating, oriental tables and stunning contemporary design. If that doesn’t tickle your taste buds, the decidedly more carnivorous Bushman’s Australian Restaurant & Bar offers steaks and grilled delicacies. It’s the attention to detail at the Anantara Palm Resort that distinguishes luxury from the merely expensive; the flaming scented torches at dinner, the electric three wheeled Tuk-
Tuk that ferries guests around and the floating bars that slip silently round the lagoons providing sun worshippers with much needed refreshment. In a city that thrives on providing the best of everything, this stunning resort goes that little bit further to help guests forget that in just a few days they will be back in the real world and that, surely, is worth more than money.

Sleek and sculpted, the art of contouring is a hard one to master. But, when it’s done well, it can completely transform face shapes, softening and defining all elements. “I would say highlighting and contouring is one of the most desirable techniques people want to learn,” explains M∙A∙C senior make-up artist Cher Webb. “What is essential though is choosing products that are best suited to your complexion. It needs to look as natural as possible to look real. I would always start by applying a small amount and build it up. Product wise I would suggest trying M∙A∙C Pro Sculpting powder in Sculpt to carve and contour the cheek area in a subtle way. Use a small powder brush to build it up - I like M∙A∙C the large 168 brush as it has an
angled shape that fits snug into the contours. Highlighters are available in many forms, cream textures and powder. Combining cream and powder formulas will give the face a completely new dimension. Cream highlighters with a slight sheen or glowing texture look great as a contrast next to a matte contour; the two marry perfectly together. The contour shadow will shape and engulf the contours of the face which makes cheekbones pop. Try M∙A∙C Cream Colour Base in Pearl or Shell for gorgeous, youthful results.”

After your brows, wide eyed curled eyelashes are one of the quickest face framers, bringing your features to life. The look can be created by an eyelash curler, or eyelash extensions, but, for those looking for a longer lasting, quick and natural alternative then eyelash treatment LVL (length, volume and lift) at Odyssey Boutique might be for you. Working with your natural lashes, LVL lifts and straightens lashes from the roots so they instantly appear longer. The whole treatment takes about 60 minutes and once the silicone pads are placed over the eyelids - this process can be slightly uncomfortable as top lashes need to be carefully stuck to the shields before a series of serums are applied to curl the lashes and volumise them - eyes stay closed throughout. The result is a brighter, more awake look with longer, fuller looking lashes – and no need for mascara, certainly for daywear. Perfect for a low maintenance look, holidays and mature lids, results are instant (they actually look better after a few days once lashes have had a chance to settle and blend together) and last up to six weeks. TRIED AND TESTED IPL laser hair removal words ∙ Holly McKay
I
’ve done it all. Waxed, shaved, plucked, used hair removal cream and even experienced the pain of the epilator, all in the quest of hair free skin. I’ve gone professional too trying everything from the classic bikini and g-string wax to the Brazilian (Hollywood was a step too far for me). But one problem remained: regrowth and waving goodbye to selected hair forever was the only way forward. It’s all down to IPL, intense pulsed light to be precise. As this is a laser treatment that destroys the hair follicle, I chose my salon carefully to ensure I had therapists with the best training and expertise and opted for the award-winning Zen Lifestyle. IPL is no quick fix. In fact, you need a block of sessions because normal hair growth happens in a cycle of three
phases so each session treats the roots of new and current hairs. After a warm welcome and swig of cucumber water in the waiting room of the Bruntsfield Place salon, I was taken to the treatment room where everything was explained. With IPL it all starts with a patch test to make sure you’re eligible for the treatment (fair hair can be hard to treat). It also ensures you have no adverse reaction and understand everything about it. A good start I thought. The next session came about two weeks later. This time (as with all sessions) I had to go in shaved and hair free. Cool gel is applied to the area to be treated before the therapist quickly and methodically began covering small areas with the Ellipse IPL machine releasing a quick burst of light each time. The light emits a warm sensation on the

skin similar to being pinged with an elastic band. It lasted seconds and intensified towards the bikini line where hair is thicker and skin more sensitive. The whole process lasted about 15 minutes and whilst there’s slight discomfort in some areas, it’s definitely less than waxing. After the first session I noticed a difference - hair took a lot longer to grow back and when it did return it was much finer and sparse. Ingrown hairs appeared to be a thing of the past too. Six months on and six sessions later the difference is quite amazing. Highly recommended, believe the hype. A patch test for IPL costs £25, redeemable against any course of three treatments or more. This month you can save between 30-50% on courses of IPL hair removal at Zen Lifestyle, 9 Bruntsfield Pl, EH10 4HN, Tel: 0131 477 3535, zen-lifestyle.com.

“OH MY GOSH”
The moment you realise age has caught up with you
O
ur busy lives mean that we rarely make time for ourselves. As we race to get ready in the morning, the chances are that we glance in the mirror, so when we actually take the time to examine our real reflection, what we see may not be quite what we expect. Surely there weren’t that many grey hairs yesterday? And where did those lines around our eyes suddenly come from? It’s what Victoria Dobbie, medical director of Face & Body Cosmetic Clinic, calls the “Oh My Gosh” moment – when we realise that suddenly we look our age (or worse still, older). “It’s not over-dramatising the situation to say that this realisation can be a shock,” she says. “Yet wanting to look and feel good is perfectly natural. The younger you are when you embrace that idea - the more likely you are to age gracefully.” The good news is that recapturing a more youthful look no longer has to mean going under the knife. Advances in nonsurgical treatments mean that they now give comparable results with surgery, but without the downtime and costs associated with theatre. Just look at the difference between these before and after photos, all thanks to non-surgical treatments using dermal
fillers. “But you don’t have to use filler or toxin treatments. Exciting new medical advances like Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound similar to pregnancy scans, can be particularly effective in treating the neck and jaw line, helping to banish that slightly jowly look that so often comes with age,” says Victoria. Ultherapy is the only non-surgical treatment to be approved by the FDA for lifting skin on the neck and face and is exclusively available at Face & Body. For those just looking to tighten sagging skin underneath the eyes Radiofrequency is ideal. Treatments are easily fitted into a lunch hour and a course of six gets fab results. Face & Body has lunchtime availability, is open late on Thursdays and every second Saturday. Tel: 0131 226 9610 to book a complimentary consultation.

ICONIC EDINBURGH 36 St Andrew Square
words ∙ David Hicks ∙ photos ∙ Susie Lowe
T
he typical New Town street is a terrace of graceful and neat terraced houses, but 36 St Andrew Square was designed to break that rule. In its day it would have stood out as the grandest house in the New Town. Even now it is still an imposing building with a spectacular interior, which must count as one of the treasures of the city. The building dates back to 1772, and was built for one of the wealthiest men in Scotland at that time, Sir Laurence Dundas. He was a self-made man, well versed in the shady dealings of Georgian commerce and politics. Dundas made his fortune by providing supplies for the army through his post as Commissary General.
He had already bought many fine houses and estates, when his eye fell on a prime spot in the New Town plan in what was to become St Andrew Square. Acting quickly before anyone could object, he bought a plot of land which had been ear marked for a church because of its important position. Set in its own grounds, the building would have appeared more like a country mansion than a townhouse - it would have been the grandest in the New Town too. The architect William Chambers designed the building in the latest fashionable taste, a compact neo-classical villa with decorative features inspired by ancient Rome, following the lead set by Marble Hill House in London.

There is an old story that Sir Laurence staked his splendid new house in a bet with one General Scott. When he lost the bet, Dundas decided instead to build the general a replica in Drummond Place. Unfortunately Sir Laurence was not able to enjoy his house for long. Only nine years after it was built he died, and the building was bought by government as the Excise Office for Scotland. To this day the royal coat of arms, picked out in gold leaf, still adorns the front of the building. In 1825 it was bought by the Royal Bank of Scotland as their head office. They carried out several changes, including taking out a floor to create the soaring entrance hall and installing a statue in the forecourt to the bank’s governor, the fourth earl of Hopetoun. The biggest change came in 1857 when a new banking hall was added to the building. Today Sir Laurence’s mansion is another city centre branch of RBS. Although the rooms on the upper floors remain private, the entrance and banking hall are open to the public and well worth a visit. David Hicks is the communications manager at Edinburgh World Heritage, a charity devoted to conserving and promoting the city’s World Heritage Site. For more information visit www.ewht.org.uk.

DINNER @ THE PASS
WHAT: A private dining experience in the One Square kitchen. WOULD SUIT: A special occasion for a gastronome. PRICE: A five course tasting menu from £60 per person, wine matching from £30 per person. words ∙ Henry le May
I
n my younger days I entertained notions of becoming a professional cook. After spending a few months in a kitchen I decided it wasn’t for me. While I enjoy light hearted conflict and shouting is a pastime of mine, when confronted with a full scale assault from colleagues for 18 hours a day, six days a week, I realised I couldn’t stand the heat. One Square at the Sheraton Hotel got me back in the kitchen, this time in a more civilised fashion. The lady and I began our evening at the Gin Bar. A perfect serve of 209 Gin and 1724 Tonic loosened me up and a well crafted Aviation provided a gin kick sans tonic for my companion - with over 50 gins to choose from the bartender’s advice was invaluable.
After our drinks we were guided from our seat through the serene restaurant and to the ubiquitous double doors of the mysterious kitchen. On the ‘other side’, the heat and smells of the state of the art kitchen hit me and then we saw the pass, gleaming black marble, in the heart of the kitchen. There, executive head chef Craig Hart greeted us and as he explained the menu my eyes wandered over the huge kitchen where chef’s industriously and silently prepared a cornucopia of delights. This kitchen was spacious and airy, well lit with happy looking cooks working diligently, vastly different from my catering experiences.
DINNER | 99 Sipping sparkling English wine our conversation drifted and minds wandered to focus entirely on the food that Craig so delicately prepared before our eyes. The pressed ham terrine and pea mousse was a delightful, light starter that showcased dexterity of production and skill of presentation. Throughout the rest of the meal we were treated to sublime dishes created with a masters touch, the mushrooms on toast was so much more than the description gives away. This theme of understatement on the menu; the process of plating up and the final presentation of each dish built anticipation for the remainder of the meal. Parten Bree was followed by Highland venison, again twists and flavours abound in each course. The final extravagance of the evening was dessert at the pass, the preparation was elaborate, the final touches theatrical and the overall result incredible. To say any more would spoil the surprise. If you know someone who loves food then dining at the pass is one of the most memorable and enjoyable dinners you could hope to have in the city. Book it. Now.

LUNCH @ MONTPELIERS
WHAT: A funky bar and brasserie in Bruntsfield. WOULD SUIT: A brunch, lunch or dinner date. It’s buzzing all day. PRICE RANGE: Mains from £7.95 - £16.95. words ∙ Nicky Howden ∙ photos ∙ Susie Lowe
S
ynonymous with Bruntsfield, Montpeliers has been a local drinking institution since it opened its doors in 1992. As a veteran of the capital bar scene, it has sensibly invested in image overhauls over the years. Now on its fourth revamp Montpeliers is back and looking better than ever. The latest reincarnation has seen the bar move and large windows installed to really open up the space. Grey walls, industrial style lighting, new furnishings and an eclectic mix of objets d’art create a cool, urban vibe while a reconfiguration has enhanced dining covers and drinking space. In short, it’s been a worthwhile investment that’s injected a new lease of life into the venue. As well as the new look, there’s now live music on Friday evenings, an impressive offering of 26 craft beers, fresh bakes and a pretty al fresco dining area where tables go like hotcakes on warmer days. Unsurprisingly Saturday lunchtimes are busy so booking a table in advance is recommended. The menu itself ticks all the boxes with all day breakfasts, burgers, salads and more substantial, hearty mains for those looking for some sustenance for the day.
Sitting in the cosy snug at the back of the restaurant we dined on the à la carte menu although a £10 lunch deal for two people and two main courses is also up for grabs. From the expertly executed Italian themed starters of goat’s cheese and red pepper bruschetta, £5.95, and Taleggio Arancini £5.95, moist and flavoursome stuffed rice balls with sunblushed tomato sauce, to the Montpeliers main of the day - a delicious, fresh and meaty seabass - and warm charred chicken with little gem, avocado, crispy bacon and vinaigrette, £8.95, this is pub grub par excellence offering good, well cooked and well presented dishes that get the flavours just right. Montpeliers has seriously upped the game in all aspects pulling in punters from all over the city. A local with character, class and good service, its bustling atmosphere has London style wrapped up.

TALKING ABOUT The Edinburgh Gin Distillery
Is this the new gin distillery in the city centre? Yes, you’re bang on the money. Located within Bruce Hamilton’s trendy new Heads & Tales gin joint, beneath the Rutland Hotel, Edinburgh Gin now has two working stills (pictured) that produces around 1,000 litres of gin per week. There’s also a visitor centre that gives people the chance to learn about the history of gin and partake in guided tasting tours. Sounds like a great idea. What’s the story behind Edinburgh Gin? Well, the Edinburgh Gin Company was set up four years ago by husband and wife duo Jane and Alex Nicol of The Spencerfield Spirit Company. Unique beginnings have seen the Scottish gin become one of the most popular in city centre bars, probably because it’s made using an old recipe Alex found when working at Glenmorangie. I really want to go and try it. What kind of things can you do at the visitor centre? There are a number of tours ranging from corporate packages to the Gin Discovery Tour which lasts 45 minutes
and costs just £10, including a G and T. For the ultimate gin education there’s the Gin Making Experience, £75, where you can make and bottle a one-off custom gin. So what happens when the visitor centre closes? The beauty of that bar is that you can still have a glimpse into the workings of the machinery whilst relaxing with a cocktail or two because the stills are encased behind glass to give guests a rare opportunity to see gin distilling taking place no matter what time. Ok, I’m hooked. Anything else I should know? Edinburgh Gin also has some pretty exclusive flavours. There’s raspberry, elderflower and soon to be introduced rhubarb and ginger liqueurs made with Edinburgh Gin. Premium Edinburgh Gin is now in the pipeline plus Cannonball Gin which is a navy strength gin at 57.3 per cent. The Edinburgh Gin Visitor Centre is open from Monday to Sunday, 10am-4pm, and Tuesday evening by appointment at Heads & Tales, 1a Rutland Pl, EH1 2AD, Tel: 0131 656 2810, www.edinburghgindistillery.co.uk.

DID YOU KNOW...? The University of St Andrews is older than the Aztec Empire. Founded in 1413, the centre of learning is the second oldest English language university in the world and it remains one of the finest. But students of history in the early days were not able to study the rise of the human sacrificing Central American dynasties - they were not born until 1427.
WHO SAID THAT?
I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day
Frank Sinatra, singer, actor.
Nowadays every day is a weird and wonderful celebration of some kind but few are as entertaining as 19 September - International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Founded by Mark Summers and John Baur in 1995, people are encouraged to hoist the lingual mainsail whenever possible. Let’s see what you know about corsairs: There were female pirates. Anne Bonny and Mary Read sailed with ‘Calico Jack’ Rackham in 1719 and fought bravely with their male counterparts. When they were apprehended they dodged the gallows by claiming they were pregnant. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, a swashbuckling tale of bucaneers and buried gold, was allegedly inspired by a small pond in Edinburgh’s Queen Street Gardens which a young Robbie could see from his bedroom in Heriot Row. Not all pirates were criminals. Nations would often issue Letters of Marque and Reprisal, which allowed ships to attack enemy ports and vessels. Called ‘privateers,’ the most famous examples were Englishmen Sir Francis Drake and Captain Henry Morgan who were considered heroes. Their Spanish victims did not see it the same way. Barkhad Abdi, a Somalian actor who debuted in the 2013 film Captain Phillips, won an Oscar for his very first on-screen appearance.
