Gordon Buchanan, 42, presenter and cameraman
What brings you to Edinburgh? I am doing a talk at the Lyceum Theatre about my adventures on the expeditions I’ve been involved in over the years. What attracted you to making wildlife films? Originally it was a way to see some of the extraordinary creatures that we share the planet with. The main attraction of presenting was to encourage people to protect wild places and the animals that depend on them. Where’s the best place you’ve visited? It’s really the Arctic for me. There is an austere beauty to it, and the emptiness gives you an enormous sense of freedom. The animals that are able to live there are pretty astonishing. What can’t you live without? Good coffee and good whisky. At times I’m content with bad whisky, but never bad coffee. Gordon will be at the Lyceum Theatre on 27 October. For tickets Tel: 0131 248 4848 or visit www.lyceum.org.uk.

TRIED AND TESTED Mercat Tours’ Doomed, Dead and Buried ghost tour words ∙ Aimee Stanton
T
he little girl with blonde pigtails stands defiantly with her hands on her hips. Determined not to believe, her stone cold expression starts to waiver as she listens to a flame haired woman draped in a black, velvet cape. The ghostly pale faced woman is our tour guide and begins to tell us of the poor souls living in eternal torture beneath us in the Edinburgh vaults on the Doomed, Dead and Buried tour. Dark. Stuffy. Compact. Claustrophobics you’ve been warned. The Blair Street Underground Vaults are, for some, a living nightmare. Lit only by the occasional candle, the vaults are a centre stage for our enigmatic storyteller. We are told tales of life and death and soon enough my imagination has run away with stories of its past inhabitants. Stamp, stamp, stamp, and we can hear Mr Boots trudging around the vaults in his heavy footwear. As the nickname implies, Mr Boots was a shoemaker and found salvage in the hell that is the Edinburgh Vaults where he mends and
makes shoes with a constant demonic smile. Remove your footwear at your own risk; this ghost with a foot fetish loves knee high boots… As the old saying goes, it’s not the dead you should be scared of – it’s the living. And if you find yourself on a Mercat Tour, prepare yourself for one sceptic at the back making ghoul noises. We forget the disbelievers because things get creepier when twilight approaches during the end of our tour in Canongate Graveyard. It’s time to remember the famous and slightly more infamous residents of this holy ground. Historically fascinating and brilliantly spooky, take the wee ones or just your most cynical friend for a ghost hunting experience on your doorstep. Tickets for the Doomed, Dead and Buried ghost tour cost £14. For more information on Mercat Tours Tel: 0131 225 5445 or visit www.mercattours.com.

KNEE DEEP IN EDINBURGH WITH HOT SINCE 82 @ NIGHTVISION New clubbing experience Nightvision is tearing up dancefloors across the capital this autumn, bringing a line-up of stellar names to the city from a whole spectrum of electronic music. SAT 04 OCT
ELIZA AND THE BEAR @ ELECTRIC CIRCUS No bears were harmed during the making of this band. The male quintent from London has been steadily gaining notoriety with support from the likes of Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton. Doors 7pm, tickets £8.

HUDSON TAYLOR @ USHER HALL WITH JAKE BUGG At the tender ages of 18 and 20, Irish brother duo Alfie and Harry Hudson Taylor have topped six million views on YouTube, sold over 30,000 copies of their EPs and set up their own record label. GEORGE EZRA words ∙ David Pollock
A
mong purists of a certain vintage who like their blues played by craggy men with greying beards and sandstone complexions, George Ezra may not go down too well. After all, the 21-year-old troubadour looks clean cut enough to be a founder member of One Direction, his sandy hair and cherub like features definitely not marking him out as one of the old gang of classic heritage rockers. Yet when he opens his mouth and you hear his voice, the impression you might have of him changes considerably. Born with the less cosmopolitan name of George Ezra Barnett, Ezra was always able to give the impression of being more grown-up than he was through music. Raised in Hertford, he played the town’s Marquee venue when he was 13 years old, singing Wheatus’ Teenage Dirtbag, and went on to study music when he left school, taking a job in a sweetie factory while he did so.
It was when he transferred to Bristol music college Bimm that Ezra’s music really moved on though, partly as a result of his emerging maturity and partly through the inspiration of living in a new city with plenty of live music to hand. Somewhat incredibly, within a year of his course starting he had already been signed to Columbia Records, and he soon quit college to go off and tour, with Lianne La Havas, Athlete and Tom Odell amongst the mid-table artists he supported in his early days. Amidst it all there was also a small slot at Glastonbury 2013, before things really started to kick off for him. Ezra’s sound should come as little surprise when you hear of those early musical influences he enjoyed growing up in Hertford, a town which he’s said had very little in the way of live music provision. It was so undernourished that the first gig he saw was an S Club 7 concert in his youth, and later on

WHEN HE OPENS HIS MOUTH AND YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, THE IMPRESSION YOU MIGHT HAVE OF HIM CHANGES CONSIDERABLY
he would have to content himself with listening to records at home. Crucially these were by classic blues artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson and Leadbelly, while he also had a soft spot for Lou Reed, a combination which inspired the moody vocal growl of tracks like Did You Hear the Rain and his signature hit so far Budapest. From a strong placing in the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll to extensive headline touring throughout the year and the top three success of his debut album Wanted On Voyage in June, Ezra’s star is rising. Most importantly though, his rich and experienced voice makes a much more striking impression than his image, a fact which suggests he’ll only go from strength to strength as he gets older. George Ezra plays Queen Margaret Union (QMU), Glasgow, on Saturday 18 October.

MY I-ON EDINBURGH
Marie Owen
Dealing with the world’s leading fashion photographers, art directors, advertising agencies and producers is a tough job but someone’s got to do it. In this case it’s Marie Owen, founder and managing director of Location Scotland, who is a woman on a mission to establish Scotland as an internationally-recognised location for the industry. Here she shares her view on Edinburgh with us. What gives Edinburgh its edge? Its size - you can get to different parts of the city quickly and easily. The city offers so much variety too, from a walk in the fresh air up Arthurs Seat to lunch in a Michelin starred restaurant down by the sea in Leith or a shop in some great vintage stores in the Grassmarket. Which area of Edinburgh best reflects your personality? Broughton Street - eclectic, cultural and lively. The street you’d most like to live on Buckingham Terrace, it’s a cobbled street with lovely views out to Fife and the houses have beautiful high ceilings and big windows. The best place to go on a Sunday My caravan at Pease Bay, East Lothian, right on the beach. Heaven.
Around the city where you’ll find me: Enjoying a coffee: Brewlab, delicious. Lunch with friends: Spoon. Doing business: Nobles in Leith.

DRINKS Mike McGinty photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Whether you fancy a long, short or straight up drink Mike McGinty, deputy manager at Treacle Bar and Kitchen on Broughton Street, will shake up one of the tastiest cocktails in town. Here he reveals his boozy secrets from behind the bar. What’s your favourite drink? I love a Gin Fizz. There’s something special about a cocktail with only a few ingredients and no messing around. What’s the most unusual drink you’ve ever tried? I once had a cocktail made with squid ink. The idea behind the drink was to create something that looked completely different to how it tasted – it worked. The next big thing…? As cheesy as it sounds I think slushies could be massive. This trend has already started in London and I think people want to have fun when drinking cocktails and this certainly provides this. You’re off work, where do you like to go out in Edinburgh? When I do get a day off I often stop at Hamilton’s in Stockbridge. The bar staff are great and it’s always nice and relaxing. They have a great selection of craft beers and ales too.
ACTION PACKED OCTOBER HOLIDAYS
Think falconry lessons for all the family, splashing around in one of The Club’s pools and super hero games for the young ones. Or imagine an indulgent day at the spa, with a stroll in the countryside and dinner in one of our four restaurants for the grown-ups. With all this and country pursuits too, a family break at Gleneagles can be as jampacked or relaxing as you’d like it. The hardest part will be choosing what to do first. From £295 B&B based on two people sharing a Classic room. Available 6th- 31st October 2014.
BEAUTY SaraJane Lynch photo ∙ Susie Lowe
As creator of British skincare brand TRU, Edinburgh born and bred SaraJane is proof that hard work and passion pays off. She launched the beauty brand in November last year and does everything from creating new products to liaising with retailers which include Fenwick Bond Street. Hair, make-up or skin? What comes first in your opinion? Skincare, it’s the one thing I am extremely passionate about. I trained at Mary Reid Spa Academy so my love of skin is never-ending. My signature scent is… Tom Ford White Patchouli, it’s a very unique scent. The best way to update your look from day to night is… with a pair of heels and strong, colour rich lipstick. I love Tom Ford in Cherry Lush. My top beauty tip is… moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. What’s in your make-up bag? My Tru Trinity kit which consists of the ultimate two way deep cleanse, Liftonic toning treatment and the Holy Grail Facial Moisture. I also use Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 Beauty Balm and Madame La La Tan Light - great for my sensitive skin as it is infused with hydrating skincare benefits; Coco Water, Aloe, Green Tea and Vitamin E, plus it has built-in skin finishing perfectors.

STYLE Laura Faint photo ∙ Susie Lowe
As a self-confessed fashion addict, when Laura’s not shopping, talking about shopping or thinking about shopping, she’s busy promoting Mallzee, a new Edinburgh based app that helps you find your ideal ensemble from over 200 fashion stores. Here the international engagement officer shares her style secrets with i-on. I’d describe my style as… forever changing. At the moment it’s all about contrast and mixing textures. The person whose style I most admire is… Leandra from The Man Repeller. She’s unapologetically fearless with her style and totally owns it. I’m a bit of a… perfectionist. I’ll spend forever picking something to wear, then I’ll probably change and still not be totally happy with what I’m wearing. I’ve got a thing about… leather. Whether it’s a leather jacket, trousers or skirt – I love it all - not all together though, that would be awful. When it comes to style I think it’s important to… have a good selection of staples. Once you’ve found your basics it’s much easier to create different looks with accessories. If money was no object I’d buy… all of Zara..

Bella Ballou ‘Angel’ Silk Scarf, £69
Friends, businesswomen and charity fundraisers, Marjory Kenny and Wendy Helliwell (pictured left) are women on a mission. Here they talk to i-on about their breast cancer awareness and art campaign, Check You. Wendy on Marjory: Marjory and I had so many things in common instantly. From Breakthrough Breast Cancer to both working with make-up, and we both wanted to really make a difference. I remember Marjory’s words during our first meeting: “We should do something together”. That was sufficient fuel to get my mind into gear and, soon after, Check You, our breast awareness and art campaign, was created. Finding enough time to make the campaign a success whilst juggling two small children and a thriving art business can be tricky. I admire Marjory’s zest for life and how she has created opportunities to be successful with something she genuinely loves. Her idea to involve celebrities in our campaign was brilliant and we look forward to getting some interesting make-up items from Scottish celebs. Marjory on Wendy: I packed in my job in communications at the City of Edinburgh Council and started my own business She Knows Her Stuff (Communications) Ltd about a year ago and have never been busier or happier. I also do Arbonne skincare, a health and wellness consultancy, and am a member of Breakthrough 100 - a group of 100 Scottish businesswomen who have pledged to raise money for breast cancer. I met Wendy at the launch of the Breakthrough 10 year strategy in September 2013. I noticed her immediately as she is striking to look at and has a warm smile. Through Breakthrough, we’ve developed a friendship and our own fundraising partnership, Check You which combines art and cosmetics to raise money for breast cancer research.

SHARP
STYLE Edinburgh men are looking dandier than ever thanks to a growing number of contemporary shops and barbers springing up throughout town. We’ve spoken to a selection of our favourite male haunts for their take on what it means to be a stylish gentleman…
T
here’s no denying Edinburgh men have always been a dapper lot, what with Harvey Nichols, Xile, Cruise and Solo Menswear on their retail doorstep but with a rise in independent boutiques in areas like Stockbridge, there is a small but vital hub growing for style conscious men. Neighbouring boutiques, bars and barbers in the village span from North West Circus Place to St Stephen Street catering for the fashion and grooming conscious. On North West Circus Place you’ll find Dick’s, one of the city’s favourite menswear boutiques. Since opening in 2012 it’s become a haven for men who covet independent brands from Golden Bear, Begg & Co scarves and Crescent Down Works. “There was a gap in the market for a shop like this in Edinburgh,” explains Andrew Dick and so he has proved. Dick’s encapsulates male shopping with an assorted mix of accessories, gifts and homewares from frying pans to funky boys toys and everything in between. St Stephen Street has seen an expolsion in its retail and grooming offerings for men with some of the best independent shops and barbers around such as The Brotique, Common People, Vagabond Men's Hair and Benjamin's Barber Shop. on trend this season: “Dress with function and quality then team it with a great pair of trainers.” The huge rise in independent barbers popping up around the city also reflects the increased interest in men’s style. Once upon a time men’s grooming extended to a quick short back and sides and maybe a splash of Brut for a special occasion but today the new wave of quality barbers celebrates male grooming. them occupied while the necessary trimming is done; and so popular has the model been that owner Andrew Cannon is launching his second shop in Covent Garden. Murray McRae, owner of Stag Barber Co. agrees that he has seen an ever expanding grooming conscious clientele: “Wee boys and old men with next to no hair come in for a re-style. The most masculine of masculines now come in and take advantage of the fact that it’s okay to be groomed.” The recent trend for the beard has also kept the new wave of barbers busy too. Easy to get wrong, a beard can easily fall into Robinson Crusoe territory without regular care and trimming and Andrew reckons that beards are not over yet; “I think we may have until next spring before men start to shave it off.” And his prediction for 2015: “The look will move away from the beard and that slicked back haircut with short sides and will probably be grown out to be a bit more natural with a messy wave.” You heard it here first.

Nude make-up There’s nothing basic about nude make-up. Enhancing your features with natural looking shades can in fact make a big impact. “You can do a stunning nude look using lots of cosmetics,” explains Tom Ford. “What it becomes is a constructed nude. If you look at a glamorous, sun goddess, contoured face, one that has been done really well using our make-up, there is in fact quite a lot of colour, just in the neutral shades of the spectrum.” But what’s essential for the look is a flawless complexion. Step forward Gigi Hadid, the new face of Tom Ford’s fall 2014 color collection (pictured). This look was created using Tom Ford Traceless Perfecting
Foundation in Cream, £62, to even out the skin tone and create a flawless, supple and pore-less canvas on which to sculpt the features. Cheeks were then contoured with the Contouring Cheek Color Duo in Stroked, £56, a powder duo of pearlescent and matte hues and eyes softly sculpted with skin-toned shades from the new Eye Color Quad in Nude Dip, £63. Lips are neutral and lush with the ultra creamy lip color in Negligee, £37.

THE TREATMENT: Kebelo Advantage hair smoothing THE PROMISE: Frizz free hair for 100 days TESTED BY: Leila Williams
DON’T HIDE AWAY THIS PARTY SEASON
I
’ve been blessed with lots of hair, but, neither wavy nor curly, its texture is the perfect picture postcard of frizz. I rejoiced the day in 2002 when I was introduced to the world of ghds. The straighteners may have revolutionised the way women style their hair but for me, they were more than that; they became my absolute essential beauty tool, used daily to control and manipulate my hair into a sleeker and smoother version of my former self. The downside of excessive straightener usage we know too well and since my love affair began more than 10 years ago, my hair has become noticeably drier, more damaged at the ends and perhaps even a bit thinner. But I couldn’t live without them. Or at least not until the day I stepped inside the newly refurbed Charlie Miller salon on South St Andrew Street to give the Kebelo Advantage hair smoothing treatment a go. The beauty of Kebelo is it’s all about the smoothing rather than the straightening so you’re left with natural and healthy looking hair that’s easy to curl, style straight or however you like it. The treatment is lovingly worked into your hair by your stylist over a two hour process to revitalise each strand from within, creating bounce, volume and moisture in the process. No nasty chemicals included and no downtime required. You leave the salon after a professional blow dry, with a bounce in your hair and your step. Two months down the line I’m still very pleased with the results. The ends of my hair may be showing signs of a return to days of old but a bit of hair serum sorts that out. Generally, my hair is noticeably smoother, shinier and simply more manageable. Styling my hair only takes half the time it did previously, and not a hair straightener in sight. Revolutionary. For me, Kebelo may not be the cheapest way to go for frizz free hair but it’s been worth every penny. Kebelo hair smoothing costs £150, including after care products to take home, at Charlie Miller Hairdressing, 8 South St Andrew St, EH2 2AZ, Tel: 0131 556 9898, www.charliemiller.com.

THE TREATMENT: FAB Inch Loss THE PROMISE: Drop an inch or more in waist size. TESTED BY: Jo Morris
Post baby flab has been harder to shift than I anticipated. OK maybe the coffee and cake catch ups with other mums didn’t help but after a six month concerted effort to lose it, I realised I needed some extra help. FAB inch loss promised much for frankly very little effort. Face and Body clinic’s goal is no pain, lots of gain and so it proved. After a consultation with Dr Victoria Dobbie, measurements were taken around my waist and photos were taken for some hopefully impressive before and after shots. And then the treatment began as I lay on the bed. The technician applied gel to my stomach and using a large hand held wand, applied ultrasound treatment to the area for
thirty minutes, apparently destroying the fat cells below the surface of the skin. The only effect was a strange ringing in my ears that was disconcerting initially but within minutes I was relaxing on the bed as she seemingly rubbed away my fat. Measurements were taken again after the treatment and then radiofrequency technology was used to warm the skin, stimulating collagen release to tighten the skin. After one hour of treatment, I had lost a few centimetres from the area but the great news is that the treatment keeps working for up to three days so the loss continues. The recommended treatment length is six sessions for the best results. After just two sessions, two weeks apart, I had lost two inches. This is an amazing and effective treatment and I would recommend it if you need a bit of a push to lose that last bit of stubborn weight. It’s motivated me to eat healthier and do some more exercise and that alone is worth its weight in gold. FAB Inch Loss costs £600 for six sessions, at Face and Body Ltd, 32 Alva St, EH2 4PY, Tel: 0131 226 9610, www.faceandbody.co.uk.

THE TREATMENT: Zoom! in-surgery whitening THE PROMISE: Whiter teeth in just 90 minutes TESTED BY: Jenny Flanagan
Your smile is your greatest asset. Unfortunately, an enthusiastic appreciation of red wine, dependency on caffeine and being the wrong side of 30 mean that my teeth are less than sparkling. And so, after flirting with the idea for a long time, I decided it was time to invest in my smile and have my teeth whitened at Christopher Sale Dentistry. The dental practice itself has a very different feel to any other dentist I have ever visited. The peaceful and beautifully decorated waiting room would not be out of place in a spa or boutique hotel. My appointment began with a consultation with the owner and principal dentist, Christopher Sale. The procedure I chose was Zoom! Chairside Whitening which uses whitening gel combined with blue light so that significant results can be achieved in a single 90 minute appointment. Chris performed an initial examination of my teeth to ensure that I was suitable for the treatment and with my mind at ease it was into the dental hygienist chair for the treatment to begin.
It was there I was offered the choice of the radio or a selection of CDs to listen to for the duration of the treatment - a nice touch that made the experience much more pleasurable. Once protective materials had been applied to my gums and my lips, the whitening gel was painted onto my teeth and the Zoom! whitening lamp was positioned in front of my mouth for 15 minutes. This procedure was repeated four times. At least this is what I am told - during the treatment I managed to drift off. Yes, I really was that relaxed. At the end of the appointment I was supplied with trays and whitening gels to use at home so that I could ‘top up’ my treatment in the future when my teeth begin to show signs of discolouration. The whole experience was surprisingly relaxing and pleasant. The service was fantastic, the results great and my teeth are visibly several shades whiter. Now there’s something to smile about. Zoom! in-surgery whitening starts at £500. For appointments or further details contact Christopher Sale Dentistry, 47 Dublin St, EH3 6NL, Tel: 0131 556 2665, www.csdentistry.co.uk.

any people only make an appointment to visit their optometrist if they experience a decline in their vision, so many people in the UK aren’t getting their eyes checked regularly. If you haven’t visited an optometrist in a while, or ever, you may have an image of sitting back reeling off a series of letters, giving yourself a pat on the back when you read that tiny bottom line. However an eye test will examine a lot more than just your vision as Ian Cameron, from UK Practice of the Year Cameron Optometry, explains, “Performing a complex range of tests using the most advanced technology can uncover a wide range of potential issues with your eyes. “Detailed scans can reveal early signs of conditions including cataracts and glaucoma, long before you would notice them yourself. By the time you experience the symptoms of conditions such as these, irreparable damage could be done which could result in sight loss. Tests can also uncover signs of tumours, high blood pressure, diabetes and whole a host of general health conditions.” You only get one pair of eyes. Look after them by making sure you get your eyes examined at least once every two years. Cameron Optometry, 5 St Vincent St, EH3 6SW, Tel: 0131 225 2235, www.cameronoptom.com
DID YOU KNOW…? 1000s of women in the UK suffer from the hair pulling disorder Trichotillomania. According to hair loss specialist Lucinda Ellery, who is raising awareness of the condition via International No Pulling Week running from 01 to 07 October, women in high powered, pressurised jobs are most likely to suffer from the condition due to stress. SEE THE SIGNS Every year about 3,200 cases of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia are reported in the UK. While children under five are most ‘at risk’ from the disease, teenagers and students are also at a high risk so it’s important to see the symptoms and move fast, especially during the colder months when the meningitis risk increases. he interior of Grainne Morton’s home is stacked with MY character. And no wonder as the jewellery designer grew CY up in a Victorian semi-detached townhouse in Coleraine, Northern Ireland with her parent’s antique business CMY attached. From a very young age Grainne wanted to live in K an old house with original features. “The house had all its original features which made us fall in love with the property. It was in good condition but we have changed everything during our time here,” Grainne explains. “Over the years we have put our mark on the house. Our eldest child was just 10 months old when we moved it so initially we just made cosmetic changes like painting and decorating. At the time of buying the property
LEFT: My dad and I sourced and designed the kitchen unit and worked with an architect and a local family run kitchen installation company to get it all in. The worktop is marble and I chose a white theme because it’s really simple and practical. ABOVE: Our dining table is actually an old council boardroom table and was on wheels when we first got it from an antique store in Edinburgh called Courtyard Antiques. The chairs around it are mismatched - two are church chairs and the other two are from our old home. The white unit was from my parents’ antique shop. It’s practical as we have everything in it from the blender to plates. Over the table we have a Rise and Fall light because I wanted to maintain the original features of the property and this style of light would have been in a traditional Edinburgh Edwardian home.

TOP LEFT: The industrial stools in the kitchen were quite difficult to source but I eventually found them at City Vintage on Colinton Road. Top right: This vase was a total charity shop find and I’ve got it next to one of my dad’s old dinkies. He used to collect these toys and this little tractor is one of his. BOTTOM LEFT: I sometimes use the typewriter in my hall to write invitations; it’s still in a good working condition. I often visit an antique shop at Fenton Barns called Lovage & Lace which is where I got this half-moon table, it wasn’t too expensive and a good find.
we always knew we wanted to completely re-do the kitchen but we made a conscious decision to live in the property for a lengthy period to get a real feel of the house and the way we used it before going ahead with any renovations.” “The kitchen is the heart of our home and my favourite room,” the designer and mother of two explains. “When designing the kitchen we wanted a space that was effective for family life and entertaining. The island area allows me to prepare tea when the kids are doing their homework, or chat to friends whilst I prepare dinner and they drink cocktails.” This multi purpose kitchen even has original wooden patio doors that lead out to the garden, “This was one of the reasons we knocked down the adjoining wall. The dining room was one of the most attractive rooms in the house but wasn’t being used effectively.” You won’t see any new mod cons in this home either, “Everything has to be old and in keeping with the period of the house,” Grainne explains. “Since installing the AGA cooker we got rid of our toaster, electric kettle and microwave and manage just fine. I would say the theme throughout the house is ‘ecletic’ and in the kitchen we definitely have an industrial theme going on.” Grainne’s home is a mixture of quirky antiques and industrial furnishings. “Both my husband and I are keen

kitchen paraphernalia and the kids’ drawing and crafting supplies,” making it a functional addition to their furnishings. “The glass top has collections of old ‘kitchenalia’ collected over the years but doubles up as a showcase when I have events showcasing my jewellery from time to time.” With a home so character driven and inspirational, Grainne picks up her interior ideas from all around. “A specialised shop, a period house, books, films. The paint colour we chose for the walls in the livingroom is called Railings. The house has always been really white and I just wanted a change of colour and I think old things look good against dark colours. It’s very dark and opulent. The little dress on a hanger (pictured top right) is actually a piece of art work by a designer called Julie Arkell. The sofa was bought from an old antique shop and came with a liberty print which was really dated at the time so we got it recovered. This fabric is from a Swedish company and was designed in the ‘50s. The desk and chair next to the sofa is an old drafting table, I got it from my parents. work,” Grainne explains. “I love New York and Paris and have derived a lot of inspiration from special places I have found there.” Grainne collects her home treasures and furniture from antique shops and fairs with an “emphasis on collections and displaying them in a way that is not too busy,” to keep her home alive and eclectic. You can build your own treasure chest by having a rummage round antique shops and fairs like Grainne, “I love Courtyard Antiques in Causewayside and Unicorn Antiques in Dundas Street,” unveils Grainne. If you’re jetting off further afield keep in mind these foreign finds as suggested by
Grainne - Refound Objects in Corbridge, Northumberland, Liberty in London and Astier de Villatte in Paris. And the dream home? “Well that’s probably just a larger, grander version of what we have now,” Grainne declares.
My jewellery workshop was the original kitchen in the house. It’s a very small room so I tuck myself away in here to work. I have cabinets in here that display my work and even a vintage first aid box which was a cheap antique fair find. Some of my jewellery is made up from buttons and in my workshop I have an original show card which is a collection of old buttons, probably around 120 years old (pictured bottom left).

he Voodoo Rooms may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of gastro fare, but this magic restaurant tucked away behind Princes Street offers just that. While the cocktail bar-come-gig venue-come-club may be more known for its live music, entertainment and stellar drinks list, give it a try for food and you’re in for a treat. Situated off the main bar in this grand Victorian building, you’ll find a small but perfectly formed dining area where you’re close enough to the action to soak up the buzz, but closed off enough to enjoy dinner without distraction. Like the rest of the building, the room boasts a plush gold and black décor with detailed cornicing and elegant window arches. The result, a glamorously gothic interior.
The menu may not be vast, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Tempted by the appetising cold and hot sharing platters, we shunned them in favour of individual starters, king scallops served with asparagus and pancetta with zingy lemon butter, £7, for my other half, and a mezze of perfectly toasted pitta triangles, olives and beetroot hummus for me, £6. While we waited for our main courses, we enjoyed a bottle of house red but the impressive drinks menu is well worth a perusal too. It contains everything from DIY cocktails you can mix up yourself to suggested serves, champers and fizz. Soon my smoked chicken and goat’s cheese salad, £9, with apple, crouton and a honey mustard dressing arrived,

LUNCH @ HARAJUKU KITCHEN
WHAT: An authentic Japanese local restaurant. WOULD SUIT: Anyone who appreciates quality sushi and sashimi. PRICE RANGE: Mains from £8.90 to £9.80. words ∙ Sarah Johnston
H
arajuku Kitchen’s ears must be burning as it is being talked about, a lot, in a good way. And so it should be. The unassuming Japanese bistro on the corner of Gillespie Crescent is owned by husband and wife team, Richard Lumgair and Kaori Simpson. Head chef Kaori, who used to cook for the Japanese consulate, is proud of her authentic and wholesome Japanese food all artfully served; an amalgamation of her family’s original recipes, passed down for three generations. The lovely menu boasts 13 tempting small dishes, noodle dishes and hot main courses as well as sashimi and sushi so, after a good study at other diners’ options for inspiration we chose vegetarian gyoza dumplings, £4.90, assorted sashimi, £8.90 for seven pieces), sushi set special, £12.50 for 12 pieces, and tonkatsu curry, £9.80. The carrot, cabbage, onion and garlic chive dumplings were light and fragrant, complemented perfectly by a vinegar soy dipping sauce. The fresh sashimi of salmon, tuna, octopus and mackerel - which was the chef’s choice
of seafood mix that day and had literally been delivered by the fishmonger as we arrived - was some of the best we’d ever tasted. The tonkatsu curry was fantastic value for money, including rice and miso soup and it’s easy to see why it’s a popular choice in the restaurant, but for us the star attraction was the sushi set special mix – a platter containing two nigiri, six hosomaki and four futomaki. Set in an outsized Japanese serving bowl, the Instagram worthy presentation was a headturner. It tasted absolutely delicious, every single fresh morsel. As we sipped on our green tea and discussed our return visit, we couldn’t help eavesdrop on a couple at a nearby table. The tourists from London had heard of Harajuku Kitchen and just had to pay it a visit. They were glad they had. Some of the best Japanese food they’d had in a while, apparently. And so the talking continues... Harajuku Kitchen, 10 Gillespie Cres, EH10 4HS, Tel: 0131 281 0526, harajukukitchen.co.uk

TRY THIS AT HOME…
Griddled salmon on a bed of tenderstem broccoli, shallot and chilli stir fry. Tasty and easy to prepare, the sweetness of the shallots perfectly complement the hot and crunchy tenderstem. Serves 4.
You’ll need 4 salmon fillets 300g tenderstem broccoli 12 shallots, peeled and quartered 1 large red chilli, finely chopped 50g almonds, toasted What to do Brush the salmon steaks with a little oil, griddle or pan fry for approx 5-7 minutes each side until cooked through, keep warm. Steam the tenderstem for 2 minutes, drain well. Heat the clean griddle pan, toss the shallots in a little oil and cook, turning regularly until softened and beginning to brown at the edges. Add the chilli to a tablespoon of olive oil and toss into the tenderstem, add to the pan and cook with the shallots until just beginning to show griddle marks, turning at regular intervals. Sprinkle in the toasted almonds. Divide the stir fry between 4 plates and top with a piece of salmon. For more information and recipes visit www.ukshallot.com

TALKING ABOUT… the Edinburgh Restaurant Festival
What this all about then? Basically it’s a citywide celebration of eating out taking place from 09 to 23 October and during these two flavoursome weeks there’ll be foodie offers, exclusive menus and mouthwatering events in over 60 venues across the capital. Sounds right up my street, what venues are taking part? That’s the great part. A huge array of Edinburgh’s favourite eateries such as Restaurant Mark Greenway, L’Escargot Blanc, A Room in the West End, The Stockbridge Restaurant, Angel’s Share, The Pompadour by Galvin, Hard Rock Café, The Cumberland Bar and Valvona Crolla will all be offering a range of special menus (under £10, under £20 and over £20) so there’ll be something to suit every taste and budget. Tell me about some of the highlights. From kids pizza making workshops at Mamma’s American Pizza Co and Eat Walk Edinburgh tasting tours of the Old and New Towns to Whisky and Game matching at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Dining Room and cool jazz in The
Dinner at the George
George Bar & Grill. Highlights also include the KILTR Street Feastival coming to Edinburgh for the very first time and showcasing a whole range of local eateries and producers. Will there be chance to meet the chefs too? Not as such but some of the city’s best known chefs including Craig Sandle, Mark Greenaway, Paul Wedgwood and chef and owner Stuart Ralston from the city’s latest culinary delight, Aizle, are working together to create the ultimate Edinburgh Restaurant Feast at the Ghillie Dhu for the festival launch on 09 October. So is it a festival solely celebrating all things food? It’s actually all things food and drink so look out for the Great Edinburgh Gin Treasure Hunt across the city centre on Saturday 18 October. There’s also beer sampling and meet the maker sessions at the West End Beer Festival on 19 October. Sign me up. How do you find out more about the festival? To find details on all of the Edinburgh Restaurant Festival venues, special menus and unique events, including downloading vouchers and booking tickets visit thisisedinburgh.com/edinburghrestaurantfestival.

DID YOU KNOW…? One in four parents admits to completing their children’s homework. New research by money saving website www.vouchercodespro.co.uk found that 23 per cent of British parents admit to doing their children’s homework for them; with 57 per cent of these admitting their child was in secondary school.
SOBER TIMES? Headaches, nausea, munchies and booze blues, according to research from Macmillan Cancer Support, the average Briton spends a whopping 315 days of their life hungover. Here are some of the survey’s findings. One in 14 will have more than 3,000 hangovers in their lifetime. The poll also revealed a north-south divide with the frequency of hangovers, with 22 per cent of people from the north likely to have more than four hangovers each month compared to 15 per cent of people from the south. Women’s hangovers appear to last longer - with the average lasting nine hours, compared to a seven hour hangover suffered by men. One in every 13 of those surveyed said they had missed a first date because they were too hungover and one in 10 said they had missed a job interview - not clever. If you’re feeling guilty, this month the charity is running a Go Sober for October fundraising campaign, to find our more visit www.gosober.org.uk/macmillan
